- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get this podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. We got some more on NBA shenanigans from
- 0:24Speaker 1: last week that we can talk about here. But first, Saturday,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I've been doing a bit of traveling, man. A little
- 0:32Speaker 1: bit worn out. You know what I mean? Saturday comes. And, really, honestly,
- 0:37Speaker 1: college football was kind of, eh. Like, we got to
- 0:40Speaker 1: be honest about this. It matters who's good, but when
- 0:42Speaker 1: who's good is Mizzou and Vanderbilt, I don't care, bruh.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Texas A & M and LSU, oh, you can get
- 0:48Speaker 1: me interested in that. Plus, I needed to watch Texas
- 0:51Speaker 1: A & M because I needed to figure out exactly
- 0:54Speaker 1: how it was that they were going to get, you know,
- 0:56Speaker 1: to an 8-4 season, as Texas A & M is
- 0:59Speaker 1: prone to having 8-4 seasons. And I just want to
- 1:02Speaker 1: start by saying that That ain't no eight and four
- 1:05Speaker 1: football team. Ladies and gentlemen, good gracious, they look good.
- 1:10Speaker 1: They look fast, but not necessarily that big. And trust me,
- 1:14Speaker 1: something will happen, but it ain't going to be eight
- 1:16Speaker 1: and four. That ain't it. Meanwhile, they were on the
- 1:20Speaker 1: other side of LSU who looked every bit of eight
- 1:24Speaker 1: and four. Now, the thing that happened that I wasn't
- 1:28Speaker 1: necessarily expecting, I mean, it was kind of sort on
- 1:31Speaker 1: the board. We kind of sort of talked about this.
- 1:33Speaker 1: with Pat Forty last week. But when I decided that
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was too tired to keep watching that game, it
- 1:39Speaker 1: was still competitive. When I woke up in the morning,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Ryan told me a little bit more about what happened. And, Ryan,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I think we both knew. Brian Kelly was done in
- 1:50Speaker 1: that town.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Over.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Over.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Over.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Anytime you get, you know, Invaded by Aggies in Tiger Stadium.
- 1:58Speaker 3: It's not going to last very long for you.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I can't imagine anything more terrifying than an Aggie invasion.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Correct.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Like just the thought of a bunch of Aggies bum
- 2:09Speaker 1: rushing you. They're weird on top of everything. Oh, man, man, man.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And Aggies who have spent the last 12 hours before
- 2:16Speaker 3: in Baton Rouge.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And do you know the last time that the Aggies
- 2:20Speaker 1: won in Baton Rouge?
- 2:23Speaker 3: I'm not sure. It's been a long time.
- 2:24Speaker 1: 1994.
- 2:30Speaker 3: That's wild.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Right, because remember, they brought, they decided, so when Arkansas
- 2:34Speaker 1: joined the league, they decided to make LSU-Arkansas a rivalry.
- 2:37Speaker 1: They really did that. And to show you just how
- 2:40Speaker 1: not rivalry that actually was, Texas A & M came
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the league and immediately it returned to being a
- 2:46Speaker 1: bit of a rivalry as it was before. Because there
- 2:49Speaker 1: is a lot of similarities between Aggies and LSU fans.
- 2:52Speaker 1: They're different kinds of weirdos.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I mean, LSU is an A & M school.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:57Speaker 1: It's just they're different kinds of weirdos. LSU is just
- 2:59Speaker 1: a lot more fun.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Right. And they don't have like a bourgeois counterpoint like
- 3:04Speaker 1: the Aggies do to like ground their existence in. They
- 3:07Speaker 1: don't have that. But A & M came in and
- 3:09Speaker 1: LSU was beating them every year. What until like that
- 3:12Speaker 1: 15 overtime game in the Ogeron year that A &
- 3:15Speaker 1: M finally got themselves a win. Anyway, they took it all,
- 3:20Speaker 1: all out on them. Now, there are a couple dynamics
- 3:22Speaker 1: for those of you who don't really follow college football
- 3:25Speaker 1: that you need to understand that did not make this better.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And actually, I think the biggest one, and I wonder, look,
- 3:33Speaker 1: Brian Kelly was going to be cooked anyway. But when
- 3:36Speaker 1: Mike Elko, the head coach at A & M, went
- 3:38Speaker 1: out there and said, we've beaten them 60-6 in the
- 3:42Speaker 1: second half the last two years, and that has a
- 3:44Speaker 1: lot to do with our strength coach. And left unsaid
- 3:48Speaker 1: for the large audience, but very clear to those close
- 3:51Speaker 1: to the situation is that strength coach used to be
- 3:53Speaker 1: LSU's strength coach. And Brian Kelly, to be fair to him,
- 3:57Speaker 1: did what most coaches as established as Brian Kelly would
- 4:01Speaker 1: do under those circumstances, which is bring in his own
- 4:05Speaker 1: strength coach. However, that's the kind of thing that got
- 4:09Speaker 1: him fired. Okay, look, the thing that got him fired
- 4:12Speaker 1: is that people don't like him. You can buy some
- 4:15Speaker 1: time in these situations, right? But people don't like him.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We have talked about this forever. He came from Notre
- 4:23Speaker 1: Dame to LSU. He did not bring any of his assistants,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and I'm sure he asked one or two. None of
- 4:29Speaker 1: them came with him. He showed up and he started
- 4:33Speaker 1: talking with an accent that he did not actually possess.
- 4:37Speaker 1: This man is from Massachusetts and I can't think of
- 4:40Speaker 1: any accent that is less like a Louisiana accent than
- 4:44Speaker 1: a Massachusetts accent. But it's not like Brian Kelly came
- 4:47Speaker 1: down there and used the Louisiana accent either. He just
- 4:51Speaker 1: used a stock Southern accent. It's kind of like how
- 4:54Speaker 1: Kevin Spacey, back when he was allowed to be in
- 4:57Speaker 1: movies that people watch, Any role he played was the
- 5:01Speaker 1: same exact Southern accent. He didn't understand that it was
- 5:04Speaker 1: differences between the two. Brian Kelly did that, right? Came
- 5:09Speaker 1: down here. So what? People don't like him. The end results,
- 5:14Speaker 1: he's in a very similar situation to James Franklin, where,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I mean, I guess it's a little different with Franklin
- 5:19Speaker 1: because Penn State post-paterno hasn't really established a counterpoint as
- 5:23Speaker 1: to what baseline success is. In fact, I mean, the
- 5:25Speaker 1: only coach they've really had is James Franklin. Like he
- 5:28Speaker 1: has established kind of sort of what the baseline is.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That'll make it very interesting for the next coach to
- 5:33Speaker 1: see what they do. But Brian Kelly hit you with
- 5:35Speaker 1: two 10 win seasons, a nine win season. And this
- 5:38Speaker 1: season where they lost the teams that are currently ranked three, seven,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and nine was probably shaping up to be a nine
- 5:47Speaker 1: or 10 win season, which is kind of what LSU
- 5:51Speaker 1: does in the absence of outlier performance. That's just kind
- 5:54Speaker 1: of what they do. Problem is, They have suffered at
- 6:00Speaker 1: least once, one highly embarrassing loss every year, like an
- 6:07Speaker 1: outright ass whooping every year. So you take a guy
- 6:13Speaker 1: that people don't like, and then you add in some
- 6:19Speaker 1: form of embarrassment every year in the form of one game.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And number three, this is the big one. Every school
- 6:29Speaker 1: has a way that they like to play football. And
- 6:36Speaker 1: they want their team to play in that style, in
- 6:40Speaker 1: that personality, okay? For example, at Florida, this is a
- 6:46Speaker 1: big part of why, look, Lane Kiffin is the spiritual
- 6:48Speaker 1: successor to Steve Spurrier if you don't pay very close attention. Basically,
- 6:53Speaker 1: inclined toward being a jerk and he likes to throw
- 6:56Speaker 1: the ball, okay? Florida wants to throw the ball. I
- 7:01Speaker 1: think the jerk part is negotiable. But even if they
- 7:04Speaker 1: don't throw it because Urban Meyer wasn't exactly a flinging
- 7:06Speaker 1: around the yard guy, but they like fun offense at Florida.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That is very, very, very, very important to them. That's
- 7:13Speaker 1: part of why they brought on Billy Napier. They like
- 7:15Speaker 1: fun offense. Part of why it didn't work in the
- 7:19Speaker 1: end with Will Muschamp. Part of it was wins and losses,
- 7:22Speaker 1: but Will Muschamp football, which is not the most sophisticated
- 7:26Speaker 1: brand of football you've ever seen, that was not working
- 7:29Speaker 1: for them. We're just going to line up and beat
- 7:30Speaker 1: the hell out of people. That's not what they want
- 7:34Speaker 1: down there. They would have loved Will Muschamp football at LSU.
- 7:40Speaker 1: They would have wanted some better results in the end,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but we're just going to line up and take it
- 7:44Speaker 1: to you. LSU wins. Here for it. That's the kind
- 7:48Speaker 1: of football they want. And Ryan, you as our resident
- 7:51Speaker 1: LSU grad, it is fair to say Brian Kelly football
- 7:55Speaker 1: for you guys was not lining up and taking it
- 7:58Speaker 1: to people.
- 7:59Speaker 3: No, I mean, this is a... It's fascinating looking back
- 8:03Speaker 3: on it, right? Because you look at the record. It's 34-14.
- 8:06Speaker 3: That is an acceptable record. Pretty much everywhere besides what?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Ohio State and Alabama? Right. However... if you start digging
- 8:15Speaker 3: into that at all, it's 5-11 versus ranked teams. It's soft,
- 8:21Speaker 3: it's undisciplined, and it just, it is not aesthetically pleasing.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And that's how you lose the former players, the fans,
- 8:29Speaker 3: and then it seems like, from all the reporting, lost
- 8:33Speaker 3: the administration very fast and then spiraled out of control.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Yeah, again, don't have friends, you don't play the kind
- 8:39Speaker 1: of football that they want to play, and you're taking
- 8:42Speaker 1: one ass whooping every year.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And they bring up, and it's very funny, when no
- 8:46Speaker 3: one likes you and they bring up, should we fire
- 8:47Speaker 3: this guy? And no one raises their hand in dissent. Right.
- 8:51Speaker 3: You know, like, what are you.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Going to do? Can you imagine expending hard-earned political capital
- 8:58Speaker 1: to save Brian Kelly's job?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Again, after losing to Vanderbilt and Texas A & M
- 9:04Speaker 3: in back-to-back weeks.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And by the way, Vanderbilt, not a bad team. Just
- 9:09Speaker 1: throwing it out there.
- 9:10Speaker 3: But you know what they are? Vanderbilt.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 1: They're going to have to do a lot before they
- 9:15Speaker 1: stop being fair to Bill.
- 9:16Speaker 3: And it's funny because, like, you look at the past
- 9:19Speaker 3: two firings, right? Like, the Orgeron firing was semi-controversial at
- 9:24Speaker 3: the time. He just won the national championship two years ago.
- 9:26Speaker 3: You know, he's one of those people in Louisiana. He's
- 9:30Speaker 3: very much of the brand. I mean, they tried to
- 9:33Speaker 3: get out less. They had to try– they tried to
- 9:36Speaker 3: chop his head off.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And they changed their mind at halftime of the Texas
- 9:40Speaker 3: A & M game 10 years ago.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And then– Like, and now this, there's no dissent of
- 9:48Speaker 3: the Brian Kelly fire, even with the $ 53 million buyout.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Nobody's saying take me instead when it's time to fire
- 9:53Speaker 1: Brian Kelly. It's not happening. And yes, a 54 million
- 9:57Speaker 1: dollar buyout that they don't know how they're gonna pay
- 10:00Speaker 1: they just know they're gonna pay it yeah this is
- 10:05Speaker 1: college football yeah i.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Mean like again like it's it's very funny how two
- 10:10Speaker 3: weeks ago i was talking about you know the we
- 10:13Speaker 3: were talking about the absurdity of james franklin's buyout yes
- 10:16Speaker 3: and now as when it's my team like Well, you know,
- 10:19Speaker 3: if it's six years, you know, it's only a hundred
- 10:22Speaker 3: grand a month. And if you get the offset language,
- 10:25Speaker 3: it gets another job, you know, like it's just a
- 10:27Speaker 3: decision you have to make.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Now see they're cooked though, because him finding another job
- 10:31Speaker 1: is tricky. He's 64 years old. And I'm not exactly
- 10:33Speaker 1: sure who's bringing in a man that age after what
- 10:36Speaker 1: you watch were the shortcomings of this team, right? Like, yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 1: we'd love a coach that has a team that gets
- 10:41Speaker 1: knocked off the ball every time that it gets snapped. Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 1: who doesn't want that? Like, what job is up to
- 10:46Speaker 1: the standards of Brian Kelly that Brian Kelly is going
- 10:48Speaker 1: to take? And look, everybody dislikes Brian Kelly. I want
- 10:50Speaker 1: to be very clear. Brian Kelly has a full-on Hall
- 10:53Speaker 1: of Fame resume. um whether if he does not get
- 10:56Speaker 1: into the hall of fame it's going to be because
- 10:57Speaker 1: people don't like him that's all it comes down to he's.
- 11:00Speaker 3: One of the best 10 coaches the last 25 years.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah like his run at Notre Dame had
- 11:05Speaker 1: some hiccups but it was strong that is not an
- 11:08Speaker 1: easy place to win right like I think he the
- 11:11Speaker 1: idea that you can win a national title at Notre
- 11:13Speaker 1: Dame again keeping in mind it hasn't happened in nearly
- 11:16Speaker 1: 40 years Kelly helped them elevate them to the place
- 11:19Speaker 1: where Freeman is now like He's good. He's good. But
- 11:23Speaker 1: this wasn't it. It was a big swing from the A.D.,
- 11:28Speaker 1: All of us saw where it might not work. All
- 11:31Speaker 1: of us saw also where it would. Because I remember
- 11:33Speaker 1: me and Mike Golding Jr. would talk about this. That
- 11:36Speaker 1: first year, I want to say the over-under total on
- 11:39Speaker 1: LSU wins with the books was something like seven and
- 11:41Speaker 1: a half or eight and a half. And I was
- 11:43Speaker 1: so mad I did not see that because I would
- 11:45Speaker 1: have put $ 100, 000 on that because there was no way
- 11:47Speaker 1: in the world that Brian Kelly was going to go
- 11:49Speaker 1: to LSU and wasn't going to win no nine games.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And they won 10.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It might've been six and a half. Cause you have
- 11:53Speaker 3: to remember how depleted the roster was.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But it never dawned on me that they were going,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Brian Kelly was not going to have a six and
- 12:00Speaker 1: a half win season at LSU. That wasn't going to
- 12:03Speaker 1: be it right now. Look, it's done. It's happened. Now
- 12:07Speaker 1: we get to the real fun where Ross Dellinger of
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yahoo sports who covered LSU for many years, there is
- 12:14Speaker 1: a line in his story about how all of this
- 12:16Speaker 1: went down that said, quote, This is the most Louisiana
- 12:21Speaker 1: thing ever, unquote. I don't know how much you guys
- 12:28Speaker 1: know about knowing. I'm just here to tell you, if
- 12:34Speaker 1: it's the most Louisiana thing ever, they're not saying it
- 12:39Speaker 1: makes sense. That's not, it's only a compliment if it's
- 12:45Speaker 1: a party. Perhaps a mixed drink. But it's the most
- 12:52Speaker 1: Louisiana thing ever means.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I believe. I don't think it's going to be necessarily
- 13:01Speaker 1: this way in some total. But if you were to
- 13:05Speaker 1: tell me that the phrase ass backwards started in Louisiana,
- 13:10Speaker 1: it's totally on the board. You could convince me that
- 13:13Speaker 1: that is the point of origin. Like, you know how
- 13:15Speaker 1: everybody's got something that they are convinced is that they
- 13:17Speaker 1: invented some phrase that they came up with first. For example,
- 13:22Speaker 1: as I told you guys, my advisor in graduate school
- 13:26Speaker 1: is a brilliant man named Sandy Darity who was adamant
- 13:29Speaker 1: that he was the first person to ever call Barry
- 13:31Speaker 1: White the walrus of love. My brother is adamant that
- 13:34Speaker 1: he is the first person to ever say drop a
- 13:37Speaker 1: deuce in reference to defecation. I believe using cape as
- 13:43Speaker 1: a verb is something that I was on a bit
- 13:46Speaker 1: of the vanguard of. I used to think I was
- 13:48Speaker 1: the first person to call Trey Young, Trey to barge,
- 13:50Speaker 1: but I was wise enough to look it up on
- 13:52Speaker 1: Twitter first and other people have said it, but baby,
- 13:54Speaker 1: we in the same boat. I merely popularized the phrase.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Ass backwards. That sounds like Louisiana to me. It sounds
- 14:03Speaker 1: like where it came from. You need to understand how
- 14:05Speaker 1: crazy this could get or probably is going to get. Well,
- 14:08Speaker 1: first of all, you know, it was crazy because they
- 14:10Speaker 1: all got together in Louisiana to talk about this on
- 14:13Speaker 1: a Sunday. And I need you to understand something. Um,
- 14:17Speaker 1: One thing that Louisiana is not about, has never been about,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and will never be about is hard work. I know
- 14:24Speaker 1: that in many places you would take that as an
- 14:26Speaker 1: insult if I questioned your work ethic. Louisiana's looking at
- 14:30Speaker 1: me like, you're damn right. What's the point of that?
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's the French influence. You go over to France. They
- 14:35Speaker 1: ain't about working hard. Ryan, you're from Louisiana. You're not
- 14:37Speaker 1: offended at all by what I'm saying.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Not in the slightest.
- 14:40Speaker 1: They're like, you're the ones doing it wrong.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, not only were they working on the Sunday,
- 14:45Speaker 3: they were working on Sunday in the governor's mansion.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. They did this in the governor's mansion.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Like, first of all, which is a very now they
- 14:52Speaker 3: say that it's a very Louisiana phrase.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 14:55Speaker 3: The governor's mansion.
- 14:57Speaker 1: But you knew that they were firing him when they
- 15:00Speaker 1: decided to get to work on Sunday. Correct. Nobody was
- 15:02Speaker 1: going over there to not do nothing.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Doing a full day?
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 3: After church? Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You know how mad they would have been if they
- 15:09Speaker 1: went over there and the thing didn't get done? Let
- 15:12Speaker 1: me tell you this. Everybody that went in there on Sunday,
- 15:15Speaker 1: not a damn one of them was coming to work
- 15:17Speaker 1: on time on Monday. You can write that down. They
- 15:21Speaker 1: were like, hey, I have already done my part. But anyway,
- 15:24Speaker 1: they all went to the governor's mansion to do this.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Part of why they had to go to the governor's
- 15:28Speaker 1: mansion to do this is LSU right now doesn't have
- 15:31Speaker 1: an actual factual president. They have an interim president and
- 15:34Speaker 1: they have five finalists. So the governor, who got on
- 15:39Speaker 1: Twitter during the game and sent a tweet that said,
- 15:41Speaker 1: I don't know about these ticket price increases they're over
- 15:43Speaker 1: there talking about, decided that this has to be done.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And now... It appears that the governor is going to
- 15:50Speaker 1: be the one to hire the coach. And that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Does that sound like a good idea? Just throwing it
- 16:02Speaker 1: out there.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Huey Long is not walking through that door.
- 16:05Speaker 1: No, but my question is, as the university president, you
- 16:09Speaker 1: would want to hire your own coach.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Or always be involved in how the search is done. Right.
- 16:14Speaker 1: So is this going to accelerate the president's search? Like,
- 16:17Speaker 1: is that what we're going to get? It is. Anything
- 16:20Speaker 1: is possible with what goes on.
- 16:23Speaker 3: It's also important context. Remember that LSU's AD used to
- 16:27Speaker 3: be Texas A & M' s AD and his white whale
- 16:30Speaker 3: forever was Jimbo Fisher. Yes. Not to say they're going
- 16:33Speaker 3: to get Jimbo Fisher. That to say is I question
- 16:36Speaker 3: after wanting Jimbo Fisher and hiring Brian Kelly. I, uh,
- 16:41Speaker 3: question his judgment on football coaches.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I have heard that Jimbo's on
- 16:47Speaker 1: the board. At the very least, I think Jimbo will
- 16:50Speaker 1: get a courtesy interview.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Like, I think that Scott may do that. Scott Wilber
- 16:56Speaker 1: may do that for his buddy. The look on your
- 16:59Speaker 1: face at the thought of Jimbo Fisher being the head
- 17:00Speaker 1: coach is pretty hilarious. Um, I have to say.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I'm going to be like Howard Bryant watching Kurosawa movies
- 17:08Speaker 3: on Saturday and hire Jimbo Fisher.
- 17:10Speaker 1: There's no chance. They could not hire Jimbo. But here's
- 17:16Speaker 1: the thing. Is the athletic director even allowed to make
- 17:19Speaker 1: this hire? Because I think a question that's going to
- 17:21Speaker 1: come down to for the future of college football is,
- 17:24Speaker 1: given what this money is that they're spending to get
- 17:27Speaker 1: people out of these jobs, are you going to let
- 17:30Speaker 1: the AD make the hire?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Right, if you spend $ 50 million to get rid of somebody,
- 17:36Speaker 3: you'd think you'd be in the meeting.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but the problem is, look at some of these
- 17:41Speaker 1: examples of what happens when you don't let the AD
- 17:42Speaker 1: make the hire, case in point, North Carolina. where the
- 17:46Speaker 1: AD absolutely did not make that hire, and now the
- 17:48Speaker 1: AD is probably going to have to be the one
- 17:50Speaker 1: to fix it. Right.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I mean, they very famously, or not very, but wanted
- 17:55Speaker 3: the Tulane coach, who's now going to be on the
- 17:57Speaker 3: short list for all these open SEC jobs. Yes. And instead,
- 18:02Speaker 3: they got Belichick, and they're in the situation they're in.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Right. And now, speaking of the SEC, Lane Kiffin has...
- 18:09Speaker 1: This is startling that... Look, there's a reason why Lane
- 18:12Speaker 1: Kiffin is only at Ole Miss right now at this
- 18:14Speaker 1: point in his career. It's because we all had decided
- 18:17Speaker 1: that he is un tanto, right? We had concluded that
- 18:20Speaker 1: this man was a fool, unworthy of not a bad coach,
- 18:24Speaker 1: just a fool that you couldn't put too close to
- 18:26Speaker 1: the top. And now it looks like he'll have his
- 18:28Speaker 1: choice between LSU and Florida.
- 18:30Speaker 2: He is.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Somehow 50 years old, the best coaching candidate by a mile,
- 18:34Speaker 3: and is on his third best job in college football.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yes, that is a great point. I have not thought
- 18:40Speaker 1: about it in that way.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And his fourth best coaching job he's ever had, if
- 18:44Speaker 3: you count the Raiders.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Yes, but I will tell you this. I'll take Summerall
- 18:48Speaker 1: as the coach at Tulane before I take Lane. I'm
- 18:51Speaker 1: not putting myself. I was watching that clown, and I
- 18:54Speaker 1: don't even know this man, so I feel so bad
- 18:56Speaker 1: for being so passionate. about what a clown I believe
- 18:59Speaker 1: him to be. But he's getting ready to do the
- 19:01Speaker 1: post-game interview on ABC, and he's talking shit to a
- 19:03Speaker 1: dude on the other team, to a 20-year-old.
- 19:07Speaker 3: What are you doing? He also might have destabilized LSU
- 19:12Speaker 3: within six weeks. Remember, his daughter was taking one of
- 19:15Speaker 3: the players.
- 19:16Speaker 2: He did.
- 19:17Speaker 1: He did. He did. But no, he's either going to
- 19:20Speaker 1: LSU or he's going to Florida. I think Florida is
- 19:24Speaker 1: probably a better situation. His brand of smarm, I just
- 19:27Speaker 1: don't think is going to play at LSU in quite
- 19:31Speaker 1: the right way. Again, Tonto, the offensive coordinator job at
- 19:40Speaker 1: Alabama has turned into better positions than going to Florida Atlantic,
- 19:45Speaker 1: which is what all that lane could turn it into
- 19:48Speaker 1: because we acknowledge Tonto. That's Tonto. He's a fool. Oh,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I don't even know this man, but it just drives
- 19:59Speaker 1: me crazy. Anyway, LSU is about to have a crazy
- 20:03Speaker 1: person coaching search. that may turn into them hiring Lane Kiffin. Look,
- 20:08Speaker 1: the SEC is so crazy, it is entirely possible that
- 20:11Speaker 1: Bobby Petrino will be the head coach at Arkansas next year.
- 20:13Speaker 1: That's very much so on the board.
- 20:15Speaker 3: It's crazy because Lane Kiffin is the third craziest person
- 20:21Speaker 3: you could suggest for the LSU job.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Who you got above him?
- 20:25Speaker 3: Jimbo that you just threw out.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:27Speaker 3: There's going to be, any of these jobs, there's going
- 20:30Speaker 3: to be a small but vocal contingent wanting Gruden.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were going to say
- 20:36Speaker 1: Art Bryles. No.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I think that ship has sailed. But five years ago,
- 20:41Speaker 3: I'm surprised he didn't come up in the 21 search.
- 20:45Speaker 3: So I think that ship has sailed.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Well, Art Bryles is as close to being a head
- 20:51Speaker 1: coach as he's going to be right now, which is
- 20:53Speaker 1: his son-in-law coaches Mississippi State. And if you think Art
- 20:57Speaker 1: Bryles is not a part of that situation– Honestly, if
- 21:02Speaker 1: he's not, Jeff Levy is doing this wrong.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Like if we're just talking about the football, not the people,
- 21:08Speaker 1: just the football. Oh, got a little weird at Texas
- 21:12Speaker 1: over the weekend. Right. With the word getting out that
- 21:14Speaker 1: apparently Steve Sarkeesian has floated his name for coaching jobs,
- 21:17Speaker 1: including the Titans. Keeping in mind, that would be a
- 21:19Speaker 1: $ 7 million pay cut in all likelihood. If he did that,
- 21:23Speaker 1: Brian kind of had made $ 3 million a year with
- 21:26Speaker 1: that job. Sarkeesian's in the eight figures. with Texas. So
- 21:29Speaker 1: it's unlikely, but he seems miserable. He has seen miserable
- 21:33Speaker 1: throughout this year. Right.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And there's something clearly going on at Texas. Yes. Like,
- 21:40Speaker 3: whatever's going on with the Arch Manning thing, they almost
- 21:43Speaker 3: blew the, they got very lucky to win a game
- 21:45Speaker 3: in Starkville this past weekend. Yeah, that, that is, that's,
- 21:51Speaker 3: Talk about strange bedfellows with Sark and Wayne.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but Ryan, look what's available that we know of,
- 21:57Speaker 1: plus what we think will be available. LSU is open.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Florida's open. Penn State is open. We expect Florida State
- 22:05Speaker 1: will be open. There are small chances that USC could
- 22:09Speaker 1: be open. Very small, but I think on the board
- 22:12Speaker 1: that Texas... could wind up being open.
- 22:15Speaker 3: And then there's a 50-50 shot that Auburn's open as well.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they would like for it to be open, right?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if it gets bad over the next month,
- 22:23Speaker 3: that's going to be open as well.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Yes. UCLA, weirdo job, open. North Carolina, which somebody's going
- 22:30Speaker 1: to think they could be the one to fix.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Wisconsin, who has.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Wisconsin's going to be open.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they're awful.
- 22:36Speaker 1: That is a shocking turn of events that they're as
- 22:39Speaker 1: bad as they are. They're awful, and like they....
- 22:43Speaker 3: They miss the days of the offense they used to run.
- 22:47Speaker 3: That was a modern offense compared to what they're doing.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I know they cannot throw the ball.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Right. But the thing I think that's going to save
- 22:53Speaker 1: some of these people's jobs, like this is the question
- 22:55Speaker 1: that a school like Carolina is stuck in, which is
- 22:57Speaker 1: who are we going to get to take this job?
- 23:00Speaker 1: If all these other people's jobs are available, who are
- 23:02Speaker 1: we going to get to take this job? Because what
- 23:04Speaker 1: I haven't heard about, and maybe I don't know as
- 23:06Speaker 1: much about the game as I used to, but I'm
- 23:08Speaker 1: not hearing about that Tom Herman in 2016 type, like
- 23:12Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin in 2009. And these are just, Will Muschamp
- 23:16Speaker 1: was this guy at a different point. Now look, these
- 23:18Speaker 1: things did not necessarily work out. But Bob Stoops in 1999,
- 23:22Speaker 1: the hot, this guy is next. Kirby Smart in 2016.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Because there are no Saban guys left for you to pluck.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Like go to Nick Staff and figure out who hasn't
- 23:31Speaker 1: gotten a job yet. and go ahead and take that
- 23:33Speaker 1: guy you've got dudes like clark lee you got like
- 23:36Speaker 1: drink of it at um mizzou like guys who are
- 23:38Speaker 1: doing okay at these smaller jobs but there used to
- 23:40Speaker 1: be a young dude that nobody had hired yet that
- 23:44Speaker 1: you look at and you're like hey that's who we need.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Like it like a college football version of ben johnson.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yes the kind of guy that oklahoma historically Would go higher.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Like I said, what Lane Kiffin was when he was
- 23:57Speaker 1: a younger guy. It's none of that. All we're hearing
- 24:00Speaker 1: about is old guys at these other jobs, like a
- 24:02Speaker 1: dude like Matt Rule that maybe was on this trajectory,
- 24:04Speaker 1: but he went to the NFL. And now you figure
- 24:06Speaker 1: out maybe he winds up at Penn State. Can you
- 24:09Speaker 1: imagine how terrible it will be for Nebraska if they
- 24:11Speaker 1: wind up looking for and have to look for another
- 24:13Speaker 1: coach in this environment?
- 24:15Speaker 3: It was kind of the argument that people were making
- 24:17Speaker 3: about like drafting Bo Nix about a year or so ago.
- 24:20Speaker 3: If you're drafting the sixth best quarterback, how good is
- 24:23Speaker 3: that quarterback?
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yes, but the other argument is you took Bo Nix
- 24:28Speaker 1: or you took Michael Penix. Because we don't what's down
- 24:31Speaker 1: the pike.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Right, right, right. Exactly. If you don't take the sixth
- 24:34Speaker 3: best quarterback now, who's coming up in two years?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Exactly. So you're so the math on what you do
- 24:39Speaker 1: is so all over the place. But this is going
- 24:41Speaker 1: to be the most chaotic coaching search that we have
- 24:44Speaker 1: ever seen. And it is so chaotic that I lie
- 24:46Speaker 1: to you not. Robert Griffin got on his Twitter and
- 24:49Speaker 1: told the world that he talked to Tyron Matthew, the
- 24:52Speaker 1: honey badger. And he said that he wanted to be
- 24:55Speaker 1: the coach at LSU. And Ryan did not dismiss it
- 24:58Speaker 1: out of hand. LSU football. It is fantastic.
- 25:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I wanted to get back to the, the scandalous news
- 25:13Speaker 1: from the NBA about, you know, the gambling and poker
- 25:16Speaker 1: and the, you know, prop bit shaving. It doesn't feel
- 25:19Speaker 1: like point shaving is the right way to put it
- 25:20Speaker 1: when you're doing it for a prop bit. But anyway,
- 25:22Speaker 1: I saw a lot of people kind of downplay the
- 25:27Speaker 1: magnitude of this. Brian Windhorst, you know, a lot of
- 25:31Speaker 1: you know, I like Brian a lot, respect Brian a lot.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And he said he did not think that this would
- 25:35Speaker 1: be the sort of thing that would shake the NBA
- 25:40Speaker 1: to its core. And it's not. I find that a
- 25:49Speaker 1: bit shocking. Like, I bet if this happened in baseball,
- 25:53Speaker 1: it would shake them to the core. Just because I
- 25:57Speaker 1: guess they have a different level of petrification, if that's
- 25:59Speaker 1: a word, when it comes to these things. But to me,
- 26:04Speaker 1: what was alleged and some of the kind of sort
- 26:08Speaker 1: of tentacles that spread from it, I thought they were ginormous.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I think that they are a very, very big deal.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And I think that it is dangerous for all parties
- 26:17Speaker 1: involved to kind of act like, you know, why me
- 26:21Speaker 1: worry on this situation? Like, help me out here. And
- 26:25Speaker 1: you tell me if I'm crazy. But everybody's innocent until
- 26:30Speaker 1: proven guilty. All of that stuff. But if Chauncey Billups
- 26:36Speaker 1: did what he is accused of doing, That is between
- 26:42Speaker 1: him and the poker players, the whole rigging of the game.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And Ryan, you know my good buddy Nick. You have
- 26:49Speaker 1: worked with my buddy Nick before you worked on this show.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And I don't know. First of all, there's been no
- 26:54Speaker 1: story ever that had Nick Wright's name written all over it,
- 26:57Speaker 1: quite like this confluence of basketball and high-stakes poker. But
- 27:02Speaker 1: he did a very good podcast on this that you
- 27:04Speaker 1: need to check out because, again, this is the Nick
- 27:06Speaker 1: Wright Olympics. But the level of personal offense he took
- 27:10Speaker 1: to the idea that Chauncey Billups was running a rigged game. Like,
- 27:14Speaker 1: he was just like, this.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Is straight up.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Talk about someone who has a strong... Moral character about
- 27:18Speaker 3: cheating and stealing. It actually makes him very, very mad.
- 27:23Speaker 1: And specifically in this world.
- 27:24Speaker 5: Correct.
- 27:25Speaker 1: He was just like, look, this is just straight up
- 27:27Speaker 1: theft if this is what he's doing. And that is,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I mean, there's no other way to put it, but
- 27:33Speaker 1: that's between them, right? That's between the poker people, if
- 27:37Speaker 1: that's what it is. However, look, I talked to multiple
- 27:42Speaker 1: people over the weekend who said the same thing to
- 27:45Speaker 1: me unsolicited. which was, you could have given me 100 guesses,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and I never would have thought that Chauncey Billups was
- 27:52Speaker 1: the person who was caught up in this. I cannot
- 27:57Speaker 1: believe for a moment that all of those people completely
- 28:05Speaker 1: got it wrong about that guy. These people that know things,
- 28:08Speaker 1: people that ain't just a bunch of marks. They don't
- 28:12Speaker 1: see it. They just could not believe this was Chauncey Billups.
- 28:15Speaker 1: If The allegations are true. I would assume, and I
- 28:20Speaker 1: think this is the safest assumption, this would be if
- 28:23Speaker 1: it was Charles C. Billings or anybody else, but I
- 28:25Speaker 1: believe that the safest assumption is that he owes somebody
- 28:29Speaker 1: some money. One way or another, he owes somebody some money.
- 28:35Speaker 1: And that means, if the allegations are true, that the
- 28:42Speaker 1: head coach of an NBA team got himself into the
- 28:49Speaker 1: pocket of organized crime figures. An NBA Hall of Famer,
- 28:56Speaker 1: no less. I do not understand how that could not
- 29:01Speaker 1: terrify you if you have any sort of role with
- 29:05Speaker 1: the NBA. Because for me, the story of this is
- 29:10Speaker 1: what it has exposed and laid bare is just how
- 29:16Speaker 1: susceptible all parties involved are to getting caught up in this.
- 29:23Speaker 1: And by the way, right now, we're just talking about
- 29:28Speaker 1: the players. We're not even talking about the most vulnerable
- 29:35Speaker 1: people in professional sports when it comes to gambling things.
- 29:40Speaker 1: The people that have the greatest control over the outcome,
- 29:43Speaker 1: and those are the referees, right? Like right now, we're
- 29:47Speaker 1: at the class of guys that can most easily turn
- 29:50Speaker 1: into big headlines. But I don't see how in the
- 29:54Speaker 1: world anybody could look at this and not feel that
- 29:57Speaker 1: this is a league that is incredibly vulnerable. to worst
- 30:02Speaker 1: case scenario. And the truth is the league has always
- 30:05Speaker 1: been incredibly vulnerable to worst case scenario because this particular
- 30:10Speaker 1: game is vulnerable to worst case scenario. It's not about
- 30:14Speaker 1: the people who play it or anything specific there. It
- 30:18Speaker 1: is truly simply about the structure of the game. I
- 30:23Speaker 1: don't know how you can't be scared. Now, the Damon
- 30:29Speaker 1: Jones stuff, That part wouldn't worry me because, again, he
- 30:36Speaker 1: create like what he's accused of and that's passing information
- 30:39Speaker 1: on to gamblers. I mean, that creates problems. But I
- 30:42Speaker 1: was talking to my brother about this and he made
- 30:44Speaker 1: a great point that that is a violation of the
- 30:47Speaker 1: norms of the gambling world. Like, I don't think our
- 30:51Speaker 1: ability to appreciate watching basketball matters that much based upon
- 30:57Speaker 1: what's happening with the lines, right? Like, that does not
- 31:00Speaker 1: threaten the.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Integrity of- That's not cheating the game.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Correct.
- 31:04Speaker 1: That is not threatening the integrity of the game of basketball.
- 31:06Speaker 1: That is threatening the integrity of the lines that are
- 31:10Speaker 1: set by betting houses. I agree that if you say
- 31:14Speaker 1: that that's not a big deal- I got you. You
- 31:17Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like, I see how it is
- 31:19Speaker 1: that you could get to that place. That is a
- 31:20Speaker 1: different sort of morality. Just like the morality on Chauncey
- 31:24Speaker 1: Bill's running poker game scams is clear, but I don't
- 31:27Speaker 1: go to that school. You know, like, I don't even
- 31:30Speaker 1: really know what they, you know, they get over there
- 31:33Speaker 1: and they can do what they want, right? But it
- 31:36Speaker 1: lets us know how quickly and easily this can get
- 31:42Speaker 1: out of hand if it comes to that. Like, I have,
- 31:48Speaker 1: the questions that I have about this are exactly how
- 31:55Speaker 1: did this happen? For everybody involved, I got a decent
- 32:00Speaker 1: idea of how it happened with Damon Jones. Like, I
- 32:03Speaker 1: haven't seen how much people have talked about this, so
- 32:05Speaker 1: I don't feel like I'm the one that needs to
- 32:07Speaker 1: break this out. But let's just say that where people
- 32:10Speaker 1: are like, if you gave me 100 guesses, I wouldn't
- 32:12Speaker 1: have believed that Chauncey Billups would have been somebody to
- 32:14Speaker 1: catch up on it. If you'd have gave people three guesses,
- 32:16Speaker 1: Damon Jones probably would have got one of them. Like,
- 32:21Speaker 1: that one is a little bit different. Like, people saw
- 32:27Speaker 1: that coming. But if a dude that made $ 100 million
- 32:31Speaker 1: in the league, and that's on the court, winds up
- 32:35Speaker 1: in this situation.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Ee, ee, ee, ee, ee, ee, ee.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You
- 32:42Speaker 1: got problems. You got problems because there's no telling what
- 32:45Speaker 1: happens next. And by the way, Chauncey Billups was alleged
- 32:52Speaker 1: to have fed information in the other suit. He's not
- 32:55Speaker 1: named explicitly, but it's him. Unless there was somebody else
- 32:59Speaker 1: who played in the NBA from 1997 to 2014 and
- 33:01Speaker 1: was an NBA basketball coach. He's there. He's there. This matters.
- 33:10Speaker 1: As far as I can tell from where I stand,
- 33:13Speaker 1: this is where everybody needs to sit up and pay
- 33:16Speaker 1: attention and ask yourselves where exactly this could wind up going.
- 33:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I want to say this, though, and I think this
- 33:23Speaker 1: is an important thing because I think the NBA is
- 33:25Speaker 1: getting a bad rap on something. And that is the
- 33:27Speaker 1: NBA knew that the FBI was looking into it with
- 33:30Speaker 1: Terry Rozier. The NBA looked into it themselves with Terry Rozier.
- 33:33Speaker 1: They did an investigation. Nothing came back. the word cleared
- 33:38Speaker 1: had been used and they'd stop doing that. Because the
- 33:41Speaker 1: NBA investigating and not finding something isn't the same thing
- 33:45Speaker 1: as clearing somebody. Like, you notice who normally doesn't use
- 33:48Speaker 1: any language like that? Prosecutors. They just be like, we
- 33:51Speaker 1: ain't got you right now, you guilty motherfucker. Right? Like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: that's how they get down. You can't say clear just
- 33:56Speaker 1: because you did not find anything. Unless you found something, like,
- 34:01Speaker 1: definitive in another direction. But it's very difficult to assert
- 34:05Speaker 1: a negative.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Right?
- 34:06Speaker 1: You gotta be careful when you play that game. But anyway...
- 34:09Speaker 1: I've seen people make the point that the NBA investigated.
- 34:14Speaker 1: It came back as nothing. And now the feds got something.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And that somehow that's some kind of indictment of the
- 34:20Speaker 1: NBA because they didn't find something or because they knew
- 34:24Speaker 1: the federal government was looking into Rozier. And then they
- 34:26Speaker 1: still continue to allow Terry Rozier to play. Now, on
- 34:30Speaker 1: one point, which is how did the NBA not find
- 34:34Speaker 1: something if there is something? And by the way, we're
- 34:36Speaker 1: still in the if stage. How did the NBA not
- 34:38Speaker 1: find something if there is something? This is a quote
- 34:41Speaker 1: from Adam Silver that I think is correct. The federal
- 34:43Speaker 1: government has subpoena power. It can threaten to put people
- 34:46Speaker 1: in jail. It can do all kinds of things that
- 34:48Speaker 1: a league office can't do. So we've been working with
- 34:51Speaker 1: them since then.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:55Speaker 1: They can't. They can snoop on you. They can follow
- 34:57Speaker 1: you around. They can find out, you know, who your
- 34:59Speaker 1: girl is and who that girl is that ain't your
- 35:01Speaker 1: girl and all of that stuff, right? But they ain't
- 35:04Speaker 1: necessarily going to be able to get behind this. Ain't
- 35:06Speaker 1: nobody got to talk to them. Hey, it's Adam Silver
- 35:09Speaker 1: and I demand answers. Yeah, I bet you do.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Right?
- 35:12Speaker 1: Like, you might be able to demand some answers from
- 35:14Speaker 1: Terry Rozier, but the people you need to talk to,
- 35:16Speaker 1: you know, criminals, yeah, sure, Mr. Commissioner, anything to help.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I've always been a fan. No, that's not going to happen.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Number two, I just want to throw this out here.
- 35:26Speaker 1: The good folks at the University of Dayton were kind
- 35:29Speaker 1: enough to invite me to campus. I was there last
- 35:35Speaker 1: week and I was there as and I want to
- 35:38Speaker 1: make sure I get the exact wording on why I
- 35:40Speaker 1: was there. I was there serving as the serving the
- 35:45Speaker 1: Roger Brown residency in social justice, writing and sports. At
- 35:49Speaker 1: the University of Dayton, it was a wonderfully fulfilling time.
- 35:53Speaker 1: And I'll be honest, I didn't know that much about
- 35:54Speaker 1: Roger Brown before I agreed to do the residency. But
- 35:58Speaker 1: Roger Brown was a great high school player in the
- 36:02Speaker 1: late 50s and early 60s in New York City. Connie
- 36:07Speaker 1: Hawkins was his contemporary. And like Connie Hawkins, he got
- 36:10Speaker 1: caught up in that he met a dude named Jack Molinas,
- 36:13Speaker 1: who is a very historically important figure that you can
- 36:15Speaker 1: look up. M-O-L-I-N-A-S. Malinas was a gambler. Malinas has been
- 36:19Speaker 1: involved in a lot of point shaving and Roger Brown
- 36:23Speaker 1: knew Malinas just like Connie Hawkins knew Malinas. And once
- 36:27Speaker 1: the word got around that he knew Jack Malinas, the
- 36:31Speaker 1: university of Dayton put him out of school, expelled him. Um,
- 36:37Speaker 1: the NBA issued a lifetime ban against Brown, a lifetime ban. Um, Eventually,
- 36:47Speaker 1: in 1967, he began his career. He played in the ABA.
- 36:52Speaker 1: The Pacers have retired his jersey. He eventually made the
- 36:56Speaker 1: Basketball Hall of Fame. All of those things. But the
- 36:59Speaker 1: key here is there was no evidence against him. None.
- 37:04Speaker 1: He wound up suing the NBA. He eventually came out
- 37:07Speaker 1: on top in the lawsuit, won a judgment of $ 420, 000.
- 37:09Speaker 1: But by that time, he just decided to stay in
- 37:11Speaker 1: the ABA position. And that was his career. I bring
- 37:21Speaker 1: that up to say. The NBA has already tried to
- 37:27Speaker 1: not let somebody play simply based on an allegation. And
- 37:33Speaker 1: they lost in court. So they you hear where I'm
- 37:39Speaker 1: coming from here, right? Like they weren't just going to
- 37:43Speaker 1: be in a position where they were just going to
- 37:44Speaker 1: tell Terry Rozier. You can't play for who knows how long.
- 37:49Speaker 1: That wasn't going to happen just on the basis of
- 37:51Speaker 1: an investigation. If they had, I would have understood why.
- 37:56Speaker 1: But this is not something that I think the league
- 37:58Speaker 1: itself believes that it can do. Now, Ryan, I do
- 38:03Speaker 1: have this question. I don't really know the difference between
- 38:06Speaker 1: this and Malik Beasley.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I mean, this line of like these player props. that
- 38:12Speaker 3: are just like, oh, I'm hurt, bet my unders, essentially.
- 38:15Speaker 3: I'm going to fake an injury. It's kind of almost
- 38:19Speaker 3: impossible to regulate unless these books decide, oh, I'm going
- 38:24Speaker 3: to make these props one-way bets. Essentially, it's like, you
- 38:26Speaker 3: can only bet the over.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, the Beasley case seems shaky.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Right. He wasn't mentioned in any of this.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 1: He wasn't mentioned in any of this at all. But
- 38:35Speaker 1: he's not working for anybody right now.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Now, granted, he appears to be a bundle of surprises
- 38:41Speaker 1: no matter what, right?
- 38:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:43Speaker 1: You ain't going to tell me he's the first NBA player.
- 38:44Speaker 3: A bit of an unpredictable character, if you will.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but you ain't going to tell me he's the
- 38:46Speaker 1: first broke-ass NBA player, right? You ain't going to tell
- 38:49Speaker 1: me he's the first one to, like, owe some people
- 38:50Speaker 1: some money and get tossed out or whatever it is.
- 38:53Speaker 1: But I don't understand how everything works. But I do
- 38:56Speaker 1: understand how it is that the NBA would allow Rozier
- 38:58Speaker 1: to continue playing in the face of these allegations if
- 39:02Speaker 1: they looked into it and they didn't have anything. Like,
- 39:04Speaker 1: them boys got a union for a reason. You know,
- 39:07Speaker 1: that's not the place to come down on the NBA.
- 39:11Speaker 1: I don't... Other than Adam Silver wrote that op-ed in
- 39:14Speaker 1: 2014 that he's always going to have his name on
- 39:17Speaker 1: about why you should legalize gambling or make it okay.
- 39:20Speaker 1: But even that, I don't think it's his fault. I
- 39:22Speaker 1: don't think that this is anything to blame on the NBA.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But it damn sure is something they better figure out
- 39:27Speaker 1: how to fix. And, uh... I don't have the answers
- 39:30Speaker 1: as to how. Now, stay tuned for an advertisement kind
- 39:36Speaker 1: of about what we were talking about.
- 39:38Speaker 3: All right, guys, we're talking about the NBA season has

- 41:18Speaker 3: a couple more stories from the weekend. Big NFL game.
- 41:21Speaker 3: The only great good one yesterday. Packers beating the Steelers 35-25.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Jordan Love outplaying Aaron Rodgers. Bo, what did you think
- 41:31Speaker 3: of this game?
- 41:33Speaker 1: It dawned on me watching that game that the Steelers
- 41:36Speaker 1: made all those moves in the off season. And I've
- 41:38Speaker 1: thought of them like three times all year long. I
- 41:42Speaker 1: don't like they're going to win their division because the Ravens,
- 41:45Speaker 1: I don't see how the Ravens wind up keeping this together.
- 41:48Speaker 3: The Bengals might have had a shot if they didn't
- 41:49Speaker 3: blow that game to the Jets.
- 41:51Speaker 1: And that's crazy, considering they got Joe Flacco out here
- 41:55Speaker 1: playing quarterback for them. But the Steelers are just kind
- 41:59Speaker 1: of there, just kind of around. And it was very
- 42:02Speaker 1: clear to me early. The Packers are in a different
- 42:06Speaker 1: class of football than they are. Like, the Steelers, if
- 42:11Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin was a college coach this year, they would
- 42:13Speaker 1: fire him. Not because they don't win. But what games
- 42:18Speaker 1: you win, what games you lose, and how it makes
- 42:21Speaker 1: everybody feel.
- 42:22Speaker 3: He's turning into James Franklin.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:25Speaker 1: And it feels like nothing. But to be fair, Tomlin's
- 42:28Speaker 1: not just– like, they lost that game to Cincinnati, but
- 42:30Speaker 1: that's a Thursday night game on the road. Like, all
- 42:32Speaker 1: those things happen. He hasn't had the– he's not losing
- 42:35Speaker 1: to Northwestern and losing to winless UCLA.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Right?
- 42:39Speaker 1: He's not there. But this– Where's the spark? Where's the excitement?
- 42:45Speaker 1: Where's the fun? Is it going to be like this forever?
- 42:47Speaker 1: Or are we simply going through the motions? College, they
- 42:49Speaker 1: would have fired him.
- 42:51Speaker 3: I can't believe how little we've talked about Aaron Rodgers
- 42:53Speaker 3: this year.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Yeah. You know why? Because he's cool. He's okay.
- 42:58Speaker 3: He's been cool. He's okay. And he somehow has not
- 43:02Speaker 3: made any sort of stink yet.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was about to say. I will
- 43:04Speaker 1: give him this. He respects the institution for which he plays. Right.
- 43:09Speaker 1: And so he felt it is amazing. Somebody could get
- 43:11Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers to be quiet and he doesn't seem so
- 43:14Speaker 1: bad anymore. Like I was thinking like, wow, it's really
- 43:16Speaker 1: cool how he actually mentored Jordan Love as opposed to
- 43:19Speaker 1: being a jerk to him. Like it's a reminder that
- 43:21Speaker 1: there were actually quite a few likable things about Aaron Rodgers.
- 43:24Speaker 3: He was amazing. He goes to the Jets and he
- 43:26Speaker 3: acts like a jet and he goes to the Steelers.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Now he's acting like a Steeler.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yes.
- 43:29Speaker 3: It's kind of that simple. Yes. Getting back to college football.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Deion Sanders said he was dumbfounded after a loss to Utah.
- 43:36Speaker 3: They lost 53-1. to seven quote this is bad this
- 43:41Speaker 3: is probably the worst beating I've ever had except when
- 43:43Speaker 3: my mama whooped me as a kid um according to
- 43:46Speaker 3: Sanders Bo your thoughts.
- 43:48Speaker 1: So I think Colorado will want to keep Deion Sanders
- 43:51Speaker 1: for as long as they can like I think they
- 43:53Speaker 1: I don't think they think that the future for them
- 43:56Speaker 1: is 11 win seasons right they just wanted to feel
- 43:59Speaker 1: good and it felt really good for those first two
- 44:01Speaker 1: years um this can't feel good and it certainly can't
- 44:05Speaker 1: be good to for Deion who If he, I would
- 44:09Speaker 1: be surprised if he's the coach next year, just because
- 44:12Speaker 1: physically he's been through so much. He's not coaching his
- 44:15Speaker 1: kids anymore. I think he cares about the players that
- 44:18Speaker 1: he has on his team, but that's a really, really
- 44:20Speaker 1: tough place to win, a tough place to go. And
- 44:22Speaker 1: they still, they're not going to be able to get
- 44:24Speaker 1: up enough money to pay Dion and pay players. Right.
- 44:28Speaker 3: And I mean, like, it just doesn't look as fun.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I mean, he clearly cares about coaching.
- 44:32Speaker 5: Yes.
- 44:32Speaker 3: And he's also going to get, talk about all this
- 44:35Speaker 3: money in college football. There's always game day and there's
- 44:38Speaker 3: always big noon.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 44:40Speaker 3: I mean, any of these NFL pregame shows or college
- 44:44Speaker 3: football shows will take him in five seconds.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't– I think that this is– we've
- 44:49Speaker 1: seen as good as this experiment is going to go.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Is Travis Hunter coming there? I think it would be
- 44:57Speaker 1: easier to get Travis Hunter to go to Jackson State,
- 44:59Speaker 1: which is really what he did, in that year, than
- 45:01Speaker 1: it would be to get him to go to Colorado
- 45:02Speaker 1: in this year.
- 45:05Speaker 3: All right, and finally, the versus between no limit and
- 45:10Speaker 3: cash money happened over the weekend. Snoop Dogg showed up. Bo,
- 45:16Speaker 3: what is your thoughts on versus here in 2025?
- 45:18Speaker 1: Okay, so to me, versus as a concept is over. Like,
- 45:24Speaker 1: it is kind of like Formula One. You remember when
- 45:28Speaker 1: everybody was at home by themselves riding and they was
- 45:30Speaker 1: watching all that Formula One and talking about it all
- 45:32Speaker 1: the time? I don't hear so much about Formula One
- 45:35Speaker 1: no more, right? It was a product of the times,
- 45:38Speaker 1: and it was cool. Look, for somebody my age and
- 45:40Speaker 1: from where I am from, it was interesting to watch
- 45:43Speaker 1: that versus. It was very difficult to watch, of course,
- 45:46Speaker 1: because everybody was rapping over their own vocals, and that
- 45:50Speaker 1: was tough. What made that so interesting to me, though,
- 45:53Speaker 1: was I think of No Limit as a local brand
- 45:58Speaker 1: or a regional brand, and I think of Cash Money
- 46:01Speaker 1: as a national brand. and that's not to say that
- 46:06Speaker 1: there weren't people across the country who rocked with No Limit,
- 46:09Speaker 1: but by the time all that cash money stuff that
- 46:11Speaker 1: was being played, by the time they came around, that
- 46:15Speaker 1: stuff was for everybody. That No Limit stuff was really
- 46:18Speaker 1: from the stretch of the country between New Orleans and Atlanta.
- 46:23Speaker 1: That's by and large who that was for, and I
- 46:25Speaker 1: got to be honest with you. That No Limit stuff,
- 46:29Speaker 1: was knocking harder than the Cash Money stuff. Like Cash
- 46:32Speaker 1: Money got some upper echelon classics, but that No Limit,
- 46:36Speaker 1: break them off something, was hitting hard, man. The other
- 46:39Speaker 1: thing that happened, and my man Dragonfly Jones pointed this
- 46:42Speaker 1: out and a bunch of other people, it's worth noting,
- 46:44Speaker 1: Master P up there surrounded by people who still love him.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Birdman got half his squad up there because chances are
- 46:51Speaker 1: it's some disputes over some money with those people. The
- 46:55Speaker 1: Snoop part was interesting because I had low key forgotten
- 46:59Speaker 1: that he ever was there. And clearly he had not
- 47:02Speaker 1: forgotten that he ever was there. Like what Master P
- 47:06Speaker 1: pulled off, especially considering how few people in his operation
- 47:11Speaker 1: could actually rap. Was really, really, really amazing. Like it
- 47:20Speaker 1: didn't even last that long. It was a thing. Like,
- 47:23Speaker 1: Cash Money and A-Music and stuff has endured, but, hey, man,
- 47:27Speaker 1: you got to give credit to Pete for what he
- 47:29Speaker 1: managed to pull off while also insisting that he and
- 47:33Speaker 1: his non-rapping brother be on all the songs.
- 47:38Speaker 3: All right, Bo, voicemail line's open. We got a couple
- 47:45Speaker 3: good ones. Here's the first.
- 47:47Speaker 4: Hey, Bo Money. Something that's very apparent in years of
- 47:50Speaker 4: listening to your show is is that you are the
- 47:52Speaker 4: son of educators. And for all that you're a storyteller
- 47:55Speaker 4: and an analyst and an entertainer, your approach to your
- 47:58Speaker 4: show very much, I think, is that of an educator.
- 48:01Speaker 4: And my years of listening to you have taught me
- 48:04Speaker 4: a lot and have influenced the way that I see
- 48:06Speaker 4: the world and try to conduct myself within it. And
- 48:09Speaker 4: that made me wonder, who are some people like that
- 48:11Speaker 4: in your life, people with whom you have no particular
- 48:15Speaker 4: relationship necessarily, but whose work has... shaped your worldview or
- 48:21Speaker 4: influenced you in some way. And to close on a
- 48:24Speaker 4: lighter note, the implement that was used in the worst
- 48:27Speaker 4: ever corrective beating that I received from my father was
- 48:32Speaker 4: a paperback copy of the 1989 Guinness Book of World Records,
- 48:37Speaker 4: which made it a literal world record ass-whooping. I thought
- 48:41Speaker 4: you might find that humorously poetic. I love the show.
- 48:44Speaker 4: Keep doing what you're doing.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Goodbye. That was a turn I did not see coming.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I love that he knows the exact year. He must
- 48:54Speaker 1: have got it that year from the Scholastic Book Fair.
- 48:58Speaker 3: He's clearly had an important year in his life for
- 49:00Speaker 3: a lot of reasons.
- 49:01Speaker 1: The only way you got to get his book of
- 49:02Speaker 1: world record is your own house is if it came
- 49:04Speaker 1: from the book fair, the book order, whatever it happened
- 49:07Speaker 1: to be.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Still in the league, by the way. Wow.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Had not thought about that.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Wow.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I guess I got to go, man. Ralph Wiley always
- 49:14Speaker 1: says the double influence that I've had, as sports writer
- 49:17Speaker 1: in particular. That is the one if you can get
- 49:19Speaker 1: a hold. Why black people tend to shout is a
- 49:21Speaker 1: good one to check out. If you have not. I
- 49:24Speaker 1: don't know if it's still in print, but there was
- 49:26Speaker 1: a collection of Ralph's columns called Classic Wiley from the
- 49:29Speaker 1: ESPN dot com days that I highly recommend. I mean,
- 49:33Speaker 1: you'll see where I'm getting. A whole lot of what
- 49:35Speaker 1: it is that I'm doing over here comes from him.
- 49:37Speaker 1: But that's the guy that I would definitely say to
- 49:39Speaker 1: go check out. First and foremost is Ralph Wilder.
- 49:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Here's our next one. Hey, LeMondi.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Jay here in San Jose, California. East Coast native. Long
- 49:50Speaker 2: time listener. Curious if you have an artist that you
- 49:56Speaker 2: grew with. from basically hating all the way to really,
- 50:02Speaker 2: really enjoying. So I think about that because I experienced
- 50:05Speaker 2: it with Mac Miller. I couldn't stand him. I went
- 50:08Speaker 2: to college close to Pittsburgh, and I didn't like what
- 50:11Speaker 2: he was. I thought his rapping was stupid. I thought
- 50:15Speaker 2: his lyrics were asinine and vapid. But with time, as
- 50:21Speaker 2: I started to grow my taste in hip-hop and appreciate
- 50:26Speaker 2: those lyrics and different styles, You know, he comes out
- 50:30Speaker 2: with Swimming by the time I'm 26, 27, and that
- 50:34Speaker 2: album was a life changer for me. And so I
- 50:37Speaker 2: grew with Mac, basically. My taste evolved as he evolved.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I'm wondering if you have an artist that did that
- 50:43Speaker 2: for you, where you evolved over time with them. Love
- 50:47Speaker 2: to hear your thoughts.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if I would say hate. Like
- 50:52Speaker 1: I have people that I didn't necessarily get it for
- 50:55Speaker 1: a long time. And then I eventually something happened that
- 50:57Speaker 1: came around like D'Angelo is an example of that one
- 51:00Speaker 1: where I was like, I mean, it's cool, but I
- 51:01Speaker 1: didn't see what y'all saw. And then it got to
- 51:03Speaker 1: a place where I was like, okay, I understand even
- 51:05Speaker 1: if I don't fully agree in every single place. I
- 51:09Speaker 1: think the only way that you really come around on
- 51:11Speaker 1: somebody that you used to hate and then you like
- 51:14Speaker 1: get to the place of where you don't hate them
- 51:15Speaker 1: anymore is you got to be in situations where you
- 51:18Speaker 1: have to listen to them against their will. And that
- 51:20Speaker 1: doesn't happen to me anymore. Like in this day and age,
- 51:23Speaker 1: I don't know how you really do come around on
- 51:24Speaker 1: stuff like that, because once you make your decision about somebody,
- 51:27Speaker 1: you ain't got to go back. The radio ain't going
- 51:29Speaker 1: to force it. You ain't necessarily. I'm old. I ain't
- 51:31Speaker 1: going to the parties. You know what I mean?
- 51:33Speaker 3: Right, it's like in the age of self-selection, why are
- 51:35Speaker 3: you self-selecting someone you didn't like the first time?
- 51:37Speaker 1: That is exactly it. Like, you need to really, really
- 51:41Speaker 1: sell me on, I think you should check this out.
- 51:44Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, yeah. That ain't really happening so much.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Maybe I need to broaden my horizons.
- 51:49Speaker 3: All right, here's the last one.
- 51:51Speaker 5: Hey, Balani. This is Jake calling from Champaign, Illinois. You
- 51:57Speaker 5: talk about barbershops on the show a lot, and I
- 52:00Speaker 5: wanted to share with you my recent barbershop experience. Needed
- 52:07Speaker 5: a haircut, needed something, needed the beard trim, needed to
- 52:10Speaker 5: look good, called my regular barber, couldn't fit me in,
- 52:16Speaker 5: started calling around, ended up finding a Puerto Rican barbershop
- 52:23Speaker 5: that was able to fit me in. Walk in, I
- 52:27Speaker 5: am the whitest of white Midwest guy coming into an
- 52:31Speaker 5: environment where everybody is speaking Spanish, having a good time.
- 52:35Speaker 5: And once I walked in, it's like a record scratch.
- 52:39Speaker 5: Everyone's just kind of staring at me. Talked to one
- 52:43Speaker 5: of the barbers, and they explained that I was the
- 52:45Speaker 5: person who called in, and they could fit me in.
- 52:48Speaker 5: He pointed me to this really, really old guy to
- 52:53Speaker 5: get the hair taken care of and get the beard
- 52:55Speaker 5: trimmed up. He didn't speak English, or at least he
- 52:58Speaker 5: wasn't speaking it to me. So through one of the
- 53:01Speaker 5: other barbers, explain what I wanted done. I don't know
- 53:06Speaker 5: if I can ever go back to my white barber
- 53:09Speaker 5: after that experience. The dude did such a great job
- 53:13Speaker 5: on the hair, on the beard. The whole vibe was
- 53:18Speaker 5: full of energy and just people talking and Just wanted
- 53:23Speaker 5: to share that it was a cool experience and encourage
- 53:26Speaker 5: others to step out of their comfort zone and try
- 53:29Speaker 5: a new barber. Never know what you're going to have.
- 53:32Speaker 5: Keep up the good work. Bye.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Yeah, man.
- 53:35Speaker 1: White dudes don't never come back. The best haircut they've
- 53:38Speaker 1: ever had is a different level of compensation. Yeah, they
- 53:41Speaker 1: never go back. Now, if we try to get our
- 53:43Speaker 1: hair cut by white people, which I really don't recommend,
- 53:46Speaker 1: they tell you they can't even do it. They don't even,
- 53:48Speaker 1: they're not even, yeah, we don't cut that grade is
- 53:53Speaker 1: the story that they wind up with. But no, it
- 53:55Speaker 1: always happens. Some reason white dude get his hair cut
- 53:57Speaker 1: by the black guy one time and never again can
- 54:01Speaker 1: he ever go back to when life had been before that.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Now the next step, I don't know what our man's
- 54:08Speaker 1: romantic situation is, but that haircut gonna start getting you
- 54:12Speaker 1: some looks from some places that you wouldn't expect it. Then, then, then, then, then, then.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Next thing you know. Next thing you know. Yeah, dawg.
- 54:21Speaker 1: This is This is how it goes. So, yeah, no,
- 54:25Speaker 1: for real, I recommend everybody do it. And see, this thing,
- 54:29Speaker 1: the needle went off the record that first time you
- 54:31Speaker 1: went in there. But the next time you go in
- 54:33Speaker 1: there and you still got the evidence of your previous haircut,
- 54:37Speaker 1: they're going to be like, oh, OK, he comes through
- 54:38Speaker 1: all the time. That first time they were like, what
- 54:41Speaker 1: are you doing here? Because clearly you haven't been here before. But,
- 54:44Speaker 1: you know, you're going to be back in there getting
- 54:47Speaker 1: your John B.
- 54:47Speaker 2: On.
- 54:48Speaker 1: And everything is going to be cool. They're going to
- 54:50Speaker 1: have a name for you and everything. Oh, Blanquito. I
- 54:53Speaker 1: don't know if they'd be saying that, but that seems
- 54:54Speaker 1: like it would fit. But anyway, ladies and gentlemen, thanks
- 54:58Speaker 1: so much for joining us here on The Right Time.
- 55:00Speaker 1: We do this here three times a week, sometimes four.
