- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Tuesday, it's the 10th of
- 0:16June and you have tapped on play.
- 0:19Good on you. Hello friend, good to have you
- 0:22company. I'm going to shut my eyes and
- 0:24imagine you there. Good to see you hear you are
- 0:27listening to this podcast. I wonder what your day looks
- 0:30like. Is it a big one as you get back
- 0:33into the work week? Is it a quiet one that you're
- 0:36going to sneak away from the world and just enjoy some space
- 0:39and time? Or is this just a day that
- 0:42you're on autopilot? So far, wherever you are,
- 0:46whatever the go is so good. So good that you have chosen to
- 0:50take a moment so that you and I together can come before our
- 0:54gracious God and hear what words He has to inspire, to challenge,
- 0:59to teach, to draw near to us, and to share something of
- 1:04Himself with us. Hey, what a treat, what a treat,
- 1:09and what a treat to have your company doing that, all of you
- 1:12as you have joined in together. We are not isolated people, but
- 1:16we come before our God with friends both near and far, and
- 1:22that's exactly what we'll do. Alright, let us read together
- 1:25Ecclesiastes chapter 8. How wonderful to be wise to
- 1:41analyse and interpret things. Wisdom lights up a person's
- 1:45face, softens its harshness. Obey the king since you vowed to
- 1:51God that you would, don't try to avoid doing your duty, and don't
- 1:55stand with those who plot evil. For the king can do whatever he
- 1:59wants. His command is backed by great
- 2:02power. No one can resist or question
- 2:05it. Those who obey him will not be
- 2:07punished. Those who are wise will find a
- 2:11time and a way to do what is right.
- 2:13For there is a time and a way for everything, even when a
- 2:17person is in trouble. Indeed, how can people avoid
- 2:21what they don't know is going to happen?
- 2:24None of us can hold back our spirit from departing.
- 2:28None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death.
- 2:31There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle.
- 2:36And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not
- 2:40rescue the wicked. I've thought deeply about all
- 2:45that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to
- 2:49hurt each other. I've seen wicked people buried
- 2:54with honour, yet they were the very ones who frequented the
- 2:58temple and are now praised in the same city where they
- 3:01committed their crimes. This, too, is meaningless.
- 3:06When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel that it's
- 3:10safe to do wrong. But even though a person sins
- 3:13100 times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear
- 3:19God will be better off. The wicked will not prosper, for
- 3:24they do not fear God. Their days will never grow long
- 3:28like the evening shadows. And this is not all that is
- 3:32meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are
- 3:37often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people
- 3:40are often treated as though they were good.
- 3:43This is so meaningless, so I recommend having fun because
- 3:49there is nothing better for people in this world than to
- 3:52eat, drink and enjoy life. That way they will experience
- 3:58some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them
- 4:01under the sun. In my search for wisdom and in
- 4:05my observation of people's burdens here on earth, I
- 4:09discovered that there is ceaseless activity day and
- 4:13night. I realised that no one can
- 4:16discover everything God is doing under the sun.
- 4:19Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter
- 4:23what they claim. Ah, Lord, there's so much in
- 4:37this chapter for us. Our life is hard.
- 4:41Sometimes it feels like the relentless demands on us just do
- 4:45not cease. And here the author of
- 4:48Ecclesiastes says, yes, there is just ceaseless work to be done,
- 4:54but in the midst of that work that we must remember to stop
- 4:59and enjoy the beautiful things that you give us in our lives.
- 5:05Opportunities for friendship, for relationship, for good food
- 5:11and good fun. Well, thank you for these
- 5:13things. Help us not to be so heavily
- 5:17burdened with life that we can't stop and just lift our eyes to
- 5:21you. And thank you for the wonderful
- 5:23things that you give to us in our lives and that we can
- 5:28acknowledge you as the author of those good things.
- 5:32So thank you, Lord, thank you for our lives, for the
- 5:36opportunity to do all the things that you give us an opportunity
- 5:38to do, for the difference we can make, for the love we can share,
- 5:43for the order and the good we can bring.
- 5:46You are so generous to include us in your Kingdom's work.
- 5:50Thank you and thank you for the blessings you give us.
- 5:54And the biggest blessing of all is your Son Jesus.
- 5:59And we pray all of this in His name, Amen.
