- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04Happy Monday. It is the first pod that I'm
- 0:07doing in March, so I'm super excited.
- 0:10I hope that y'all the best weekend and just especially
- 0:14after being out of town, I love traveling, but I also am so
- 0:18grateful to come home and reset. So I'm praying that this Monday
- 0:23feels fresh for you. A new week, a new month, new
- 0:27mercies, and new opportunities to walk closely with the Lord.
- 0:32So today we are going to be in First Thessalonians 4 verses one
- 0:37through 8 and I will go ahead and read it for us.
- 0:41As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you
- 0:45how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living
- 0:49now. We ask you and urge you in the
- 0:52Lord Jesus to do this more and more, for you know what
- 0:56instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
- 1:01It is God's will that you should be sanctified, that you should
- 1:05avoid sexual immorality, that each of you should learn to
- 1:09control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not
- 1:14in passionate lust like the pagans who do not know God, and
- 1:18that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage
- 1:22of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those
- 1:26who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.
- 1:30For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
- 1:35Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject
- 1:40a human being, but God, the very God who gives you his Holy
- 1:44Spirit. All right, so we talked a lot
- 1:51about in the past couple chapters how Paul has really
- 1:55been encouraging this church. We see that they are standing
- 2:00firm and that is super motivating, not just for us, but
- 2:04it gives Paul hope and encouragement in the suffering
- 2:07that he's experiencing at the time.
- 2:09But now we are looking ahead to practical ways that we learn how
- 2:15we can please God. But here's the main idea that
- 2:18stood out to me. We live in order to please God.
- 2:25And Paul says you are living this way, but do it more.
- 2:30And I love that he's not correcting chaos because they
- 2:34were actually doing so well. But he still says increase, keep
- 2:39going. Don't just plateau or get
- 2:41stagnant. And that word urge, it comes
- 2:45from urgency because it's communicating that this is
- 2:48serious, because it's possible to start strong and then to
- 2:54drift. Paul also says in 1st
- 2:57Corinthians 1012 through 13, So if you think you are standing
- 3:02firm, be careful that you don't fall.
- 3:05No temptation is overtaking you except what is common to mankind
- 3:10and then to another church. In Galatia chapter 5 verses 7
- 3:14through 8 in Galatians, he says you were running a good race who
- 3:19cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?
- 3:22So this underlines for us. You can be running well but
- 3:26slowly get distracted and even just a little compromise, it can
- 3:31spread. It can affect us because in
- 3:34First Corinthians 5-6 it also says that a little yeast works
- 3:39through the whole batch of dough.
- 3:41So drifting usually is not dramatic.
- 3:44It's gradual and that's why it's such a slippery slope.
- 3:48And as long as we're on this side of eternity, we will face
- 3:52temptation. Jesus himself says in Matthew
- 3:562641, This spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
- 4:01That's real because if you love God, you want to obey.
- 4:08But we still have our flesh that is pulling at us, which is why
- 4:13we are called to crucify the flesh, not just manage it.
- 4:17Crucify is an intense verbiage and we have to be made new in
- 4:22the attitude of our minds, like Ephesians 422 says.
- 4:28So here's the picture that came to mind while I was reading this
- 4:32passage. I thought it was a cool vision
- 4:34and I think it can help a lot of us Just think more about this.
- 4:39Think about when you're cooking something in the oven.
- 4:41For me, I was thinking of a casserole.
- 4:44So you've got all the ingredients laid out.
- 4:47The ingredients for us would be like God's Word.
- 4:49We have the Holy Spirit, we have community for accountability, we
- 4:53have prayer. It's all assembled in the pan,
- 4:57but it's not finished yet. It has to be cooked.
- 5:02And in Philippians 1/6, it says he who began a good work in you
- 5:07will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
- 5:13That means that we're still being formed.
- 5:15God's not done working on our hearts.
- 5:18And sometimes, y'all, God is going to turn up the heat.
- 5:23Malachi 3 calls him a refiner. And refining it requires fire
- 5:30intensity. So the heat, sometimes it is not
- 5:34punishment, it's purification. It's making you more into the
- 5:38image of Jesus. But here's what really struck me
- 5:42as I was thinking about this. When something is in the oven,
- 5:46you don't just leave it and forget about it.
- 5:49Or at least I don't. I set a timer and for us
- 5:53spiritually you have to check and evaluate your life because
- 5:57if you don't, you risk burning daily evaluation asking God,
- 6:04Lord, search my heart. Show me where I might be
- 6:08drifting. Correct me through your word.
- 6:11Psalm 90 verse 12 says teach us to number our days and just like
- 6:16with a timer, the numbers are ticking down.
- 6:21This image. It reminds us that time matters.
- 6:24Jesus is returning. Therefore we live with urgency.
- 6:28That's why Paul uses the word urge.
- 6:32So also, what does Paul get practical about?
- 6:35First he mentions self-control over your own body.
- 6:41Now notice he doesn't say other people's too.
- 6:45It's not culture standard. It's your body, the one that God
- 6:49gave you. And he says to learn to control
- 6:52it in a way that is holy and honorable.
- 6:55In First Corinthians 618, Paul says flee from sexual
- 6:59immorality. All other sins a person commits
- 7:02are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually sins
- 7:05against their own body. That is so powerful because it's
- 7:10not just external behavior, it's personal.
- 7:13It affects you deeply and living under Christ's control, it's not
- 7:19just better, it's safer. It protects you, but it also
- 7:22protects others. And I think a lot of the times
- 7:26we don't think about how our personal decisions can also
- 7:31largely impact others around us. So I just want us to ask
- 7:37ourselves, how am I honoring God with my body today?
- 7:41Am I excusing sin or am I extracting it?
- 7:46Because the bottom line is that wrong desires eventually will
- 7:51lead to wrong actions, even if you're not acting outwardly, so
- 7:56to speak. Like dwelling.
- 7:58You could be dwelling on lust or replaying impurity.
- 8:02Maybe it's even obsessing over people's approval of you.
- 8:05But this still affects your intimacy with God.
- 8:09And here's the deeper why. Like I said in the beginning, we
- 8:14live in order to please God, to bring him glory. 1st Corinthians
- 8:201031 whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
- 8:26That's the purpose. And honestly, living how God
- 8:29designed it doesn't just bless His name, it blesses us.
- 8:35And there is a season in my life where vulnerably and frankly, I
- 8:41had to confront this because I was really struggling with body
- 8:44image. And if I'm honest, I didn't want
- 8:47to admit this, but I didn't want to fully change.
- 8:51But The thing is, I didn't realize it wasn't just affecting
- 8:54me physically or mentally and emotionally.
- 8:58It was harming me spiritually because it was keeping me from
- 9:01the freedom that Jesus died for. So living holy, It's not
- 9:07restriction, it's actually freedom.
- 9:11So I'm going to leave y'all with a few reflection questions just
- 9:14to think about. What did you struggle with when
- 9:18you first became a believer, or maybe even a year ago?
- 9:23Are you stronger now? Are you more determined to live
- 9:28in Christ's victory even though we will still face temptation?
- 9:34Have you grown a greater desire to live, conquering that and
- 9:39conquering your flesh through the blood of Jesus?
- 9:42And if you're still stuck in something, have you truly
- 9:45surrendered it? Have you admitted that you want
- 9:49the Lord to come in and heal your heart?
- 9:52Or are you halfway pursuing holiness?
- 9:55Because y'all, we live in order to please God.
- 9:59It's not for performance, it's not for approval, but it should
- 10:03be because we love Him and we desire to obey Him in all areas
- 10:08of our lives. OK, so with that, let's go ahead
- 10:11and pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 10:15that you do care how we live. Thank you that holiness is not
- 10:22about shame, it's about true freedom.
- 10:27God, we need your help. We admit we cannot do this on
- 10:32our own. We do not want to drift.
- 10:34Would you make us alert? Would you refine us?
- 10:39Even when it's hot and pressing, at times it's uncomfortable?
- 10:44Would you search our hearts? Would you renew our minds?
- 10:49Lord, just as scripture says, the Spirit is willing, but the
- 10:52flesh is weak. And so strengthen us where our
- 10:56flesh is weak. God empower us by your Spirit to
- 11:00walk in self-control, to walk in purity and to pursue it.
- 11:04We want to glorify you with our bodies, with our thoughts and
- 11:08our daily choices and decisions more and more in Jesus name,
- 11:14Amen. All right friends, Well, that is
- 11:17what I have for you guys today. Praying that the Lord speaks to
- 11:21your heart and that you can reflect on some things and just
- 11:25go to Him. Ask God what he wants to
- 11:28continue revealing. And I'm praying for all of you
- 11:32guys and I hope you all have a great rest of your Monday.
