- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good afternoon from the chicken coop.
- 0:30I am talking to you out here because I just finished up.
- 0:34It's almost the end of the day. It's actually very dusk.
- 0:37They're all starting to come in to go to bed.
- 0:39Although there's a bigger thing happening because I changed the
- 0:43coop out today. So change the coop out day
- 0:46happens about every two and two weeks. 2 1/2 weeks depends on
- 0:50how bad it is on what kind of weather we've got.
- 0:53But what I do every couple weeks is I completely swap the coop
- 0:57coop out where I take all the straw that we have inside the
- 1:00coop wheat straw I use on the on the floor, although the floor is
- 1:04tiled because yes, I'm insane and I tiled the floor of my
- 1:07chicken coop because I didn't want having the grossness on the
- 1:10floor. But we take all of that and we
- 1:13move it outside. Well, I take all of that and I
- 1:15move it outside And it's part of that whole process is to make
- 1:20sure I can see if there's anything happening in the coop.
- 1:23And chickens can get things very quickly and if you ignore stuff,
- 1:27it blows up just like in life. But this is such a great
- 1:29metaphor and it's why I do what I do.
- 1:31I will come out here and I will swap this coop out.
- 1:34I right down to the tile, put everything out and I look and I
- 1:38look in the corners and I see is there anything happening?
- 1:41Do we have any bugs? Is there any rodents?
- 1:43Is there any infestations of something I need to pay
- 1:45attention to? Clean out all their egg boxes,
- 1:48put in new straw, put in fresh herbs for them.
- 1:51Get there stuff all cleaned out, scraped down, whatever needs to
- 1:55be taken care of is taken care of.
- 1:57And this ritual that I created in this, which it really is a
- 2:00ritual for me is hard work. It takes me about an hour and a
- 2:05half, two hours. And usually I'm doing it at a
- 2:10different time of the day. But sometimes when it's like
- 2:12cool and if especially in the summer, I'll do it in the
- 2:14evenings because it's cooler. So today just happened to be a
- 2:18day when I was not having sessions late in the day.
- 2:20And I said, OK, I'm going to do it this evening, let's see how
- 2:23it goes. So I get it done.
- 2:25Now the funny part about this is 1.
- 2:29It satisfies me because I'm sitting here and I'm going, oh
- 2:32wow. All right, their coop is all
- 2:33clean and I know there's nothing out there and I don't have to
- 2:35worry about anything. And it's just good to check on
- 2:38whatever projects you have. Like in general, it doesn't
- 2:40matter what you do. You should know what's going on
- 2:42with it just happens to be my chicken coop.
- 2:45Well, it also happens to be a thrill for them and they get so
- 2:50excited on this day like Amelia. You've all heard me talk about
- 2:53Amelia before. She is my right hand chicken,
- 2:57always involved with everything and she will just stick right to
- 3:00me the whole time. I'm taking out all the straw
- 3:02because she knows there's going to be bugs in there and she
- 3:05knows if I stick with mom, I'm going to find them.
- 3:09And she cackles the whole time and she gets so excited and goes
- 3:13through the whole thing and she waits while I'm opening up the
- 3:15new bales of straw because she knows they'll be things in
- 3:18there. And it's so funny to watch how
- 3:21their personalities come out. So right now everybody's like
- 3:24doing their thing, going around, digging through stuff.
- 3:27And there are some that are completely disinterested in this
- 3:30process and they go right up and they go to bed in the rafters.
- 3:33And then there are the rest of them that are my normal crew,
- 3:36like Amelia and Sabrina and Delilah and who else is out here
- 3:43right now? Red is out here, Samantha's out
- 3:48here. They're all digging around.
- 3:50They're so excited in this. Some of them are outside digging
- 3:53in the old straw looking for bugs, and some of them are
- 3:56inside digging in the new straw. And it just makes me think
- 4:02about, you know, yes, they have a little tiny chicken brain, but
- 4:05they're even able to experience that level of like, ooh, joy,
- 4:10excitement, get involved, whatever their emotion, I'm air
- 4:14quoting there is for them. And it might just be, you know,
- 4:17a stimuli response, who knows? But whatever it is, it comes
- 4:20across in a certain way and maybe I'm anthropomorphizing
- 4:23them. Okay, So what here's the deal.
- 4:26It makes me feel good doing this process and I know it makes them
- 4:30feel good. So it compels me to do it even
- 4:32more and set up things for them and change things.
- 4:34Like when you change their surroundings around, they get
- 4:37very excited. It's like humans like, you know,
- 4:39you change your living room around.
- 4:41We all want to feel that's change.
- 4:42Like oh, I want to get new pillows for the season or I want
- 4:44to do this. I'm getting new sheets.
- 4:47It's there's just something inherent in us that says when
- 4:50you do those things, it makes you feel good.
- 4:53It makes you feel creative. It gives you a boost of joy.
- 4:56The serotonin goes off and you're like, oh, that's so fun.
- 4:59So the, the, the, the point of having this chalk today was it
- 5:04can be in the simplest of things.
- 5:05I'm cleaning a chicken coop and I got a boost, so don't miss
- 5:08those small spots because that's where the sweet stuff is.
- 5:12It really is joyful to do these little tiny things and see and
- 5:17you got to just seek them out and find them.
- 5:19All right my friends, I will see you from a very clean chicken
- 5:22coop and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 5:24Have a blessed day, bye.
