Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: My thoughts on the new Post editor
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, there's a lot of people who think the media
- 0:02Speaker 1: are a left wing lobby group, and there's a lot
- 0:05Speaker 1: of people who think that Stuff is the leftiest of
- 0:09Speaker 1: them all. So explain to me why Stuff has just
- 0:12Speaker 1: appointed Matthew Houghton as the new editor of The Post,
- 0:16Speaker 1: apparently after he was shoulder tapped by Shanee Boucher. So
- 0:20Speaker 1: it wasn't his idea, it was hers. This is what
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Post said yesterday about their new editor, Matthew Houghton.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hooton CV includes being a young nat a press secretary
- 0:29Speaker 1: in the Bulger government, as strategist for Nashal during the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Don Brash years, an advisor for ACT, a strategic consultant
- 0:34Speaker 1: for EWE Banks, most corporate sectors, government departments and the
- 0:37Speaker 1: ultra rich. And he even had a short lived stint
- 0:40Speaker 1: as Wayne Brown's advisor. Now, does that sound like a
- 0:43Speaker 1: lefty to you? Does that sound like a socialist? Doesn't
- 0:46Speaker 1: to me? If you read Matthew, and if you meet Matthew,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I have and I do, you'll know he has
- 0:51Speaker 1: one of the clearest understandings of how power works in
- 0:54Speaker 1: this country, both left and right politically and at a
- 0:58Speaker 1: corporate level, and even into May and I think this
- 1:03Speaker 1: is interesting is about how we define people on their politics.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I think people in this country are far too quick
- 1:07Speaker 1: to generalize. I think a lot of people don't quite
- 1:10Speaker 1: understand politics. They don't understand the difference between left and right,
- 1:14Speaker 1: often confusing them between conservative and liberal, and the difference
- 1:17Speaker 1: that you're asked them about the difference between demand side
- 1:20Speaker 1: and supply economics, and well you get a little bit
- 1:23Speaker 1: of confusion, but that people will swear that the right wing.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I've grown frustrated at hearing supposedly right as people demanding
- 1:30Speaker 1: government intervention, not realizing that they're straying out of the lane.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And these are the same people who go all the
- 1:36Speaker 1: media's left wing and they're not. All the media is
- 1:39Speaker 1: biased and it's not anyway. Here's Matthew Houghton and he's
- 1:43Speaker 1: going to be the editor at the Post. The Post
- 1:45Speaker 1: is on a big growth path at the moment. I
- 1:47Speaker 1: actually think this is a genius move by Shine Boucher.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I think he's going to come up with some great stuff.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He doesn't have to be a journalist, he just has
- 1:54Speaker 1: to have a good brain. At Matthew Houghton has a
- 1:57Speaker 1: good brain. So let the ructions begin. For more from
