- 0:07On October 11, 1967, the St. Louis Cardinals faced the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for Game 6 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:16The Cardinals led the best of seven series three games to two, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 6 featuring announcers Pee-wee Reese and Harry Carey.
- 0:26The weatherman must be a great baseball fan. Pee-wee, a beautiful day. The temperature is 62 degrees. The ball parks can be jam-packed, of course.
- 0:35Gary Waslewski will pitch for the Boston Red Sox. Dick Hughes for the St. Louis Cardinals. And what a story this is.
- 0:43Waslewski, you know, is added to the Boston roster as a result of an injury. And his name is not even in the official World Series program. How about that, Pee-wee?
- 0:54Well, that is something, Harry. And of course, Waslewski, he can get off to a good start. Gets over this nervous jitters.
- 1:01The start of this game, he could be a little rough because he throws a real good sinker. He pitches a whole lot like Lombard.
- 1:06And Harry, where have you been for the last three games?
- 1:09I missed you, Pee-wee. I know about that other meeting with our good friend Kurt Gowdy. What a World Series this has become.
- 1:15Remember when we left Boston, Pee-wee? I said to you, I believe, and to our engineer Joe Sterniello, and to our producer here, Len Dillon, our director, that we'd be back to Boston. And here we are.
- 1:27Yes, sir. And this Boston ball club, all year in the American League, they have fought back. They've been a tough ball club. You counted them out.
- 1:36Like the win in the last two games on Saturday and Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, no one gave them too much of a chance winning those two games.
- 1:43And no one has given them too much of a chance of winning the last three here. But we're back in Boston, Harry, and you can't tell what's going to happen.
- 1:52This broadcast is authorized under broadcast rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 1:59And any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the description or account of this game without the express consent of the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited.
- 2:08Another thing about playing in the World Series, for example, I'm looking down at Jim Lownborg's been posing for pictures all day long.
- 2:16He's become a national hero. Just winning 22 games in the American League, I'm sure wouldn't have made him the hero that he is now as a result of winning two in the World Series with all that national exposure involved.
- 2:28Here are the starting lineups being announced. Red Cheney is the manager of the Cardinals, has been introduced.
- 2:33Now, Lou Brott will be playing left field, hitting 400 in the series. Will be the leadoff man.
- 2:38Batting second in center field, hitting 150 in the series. Kirk Flood.
- 2:45In right field, batting third, proving himself a competitive warhorse, as you would expect him to be.
- 2:53Roger Maris hitting 316 in the series, and leads with six runs batted in. He'll be playing right field, hitting third.
- 3:00Orlando Cepeda, who's been held to a 150 batting average in the series, will be batting clean up playing first base.
- 3:08The catcher for the Cardinals, hitting 125 in the series, Tim McCreiber.
- 3:16Playing third base and batting sixth with an average of 125 in the series, will be Mike Shannon.
- 3:25At second base, fellows made two of the greatest defensive plays ever seen, but both in losing games, hitting 353, batting seventh at second base, Julian Javier.
- 3:42At shortstop, batting eighth, hitting out 167 in the World Series, Dow Maxfield.
- 3:48The catcher out in the right field bullpen, still getting ready, Dick Hughes. He's 0-1 in the series.
- 3:56He was 16-6 over the regular season, with an earned run average of 2.67.
- 4:02For the hometown Boston Red Sox, the rest of the Cardinals squad is introduced en masse, and they've taken their position along the third base line.
- 4:13Soon the Boston Red Sox will be introduced, starting with their manager, who by the way will be honored by the Boston's Best Photographers Association at a dinner later this month.
- 4:27Dick Williams has been introduced and trouts out the first base.
- 4:36Leading off for the Boston Red Sox, one of the stars in their victory Monday in St. Louis, at third base, hitting 125 in the series, Joe Boyd.
- 4:48At second base, hitting 400 in the series, in his first full season of the Major Leagues, batting second, Mike Andrews.
- 4:59In left field, starring in the series as he did during the regular season, Carl Yostritsky. He's hitting 333 during the series.
- 5:10In right field, the man who put the Red Sox out in front in Monday's game, Ken Harrelson, playing right field, hitting 167, batting fourth.
- 5:21At first base, hitting fifth, batting 222 in the series, George Scott.
- 5:29In center field, the switch-hitting, hard-throwing, fleet-footed Reggie Smith, hitting 235 in the series.
- 5:39In seventh, playing shortstop, batting 0-7-1 in the series, with one hit in five games, but playing brilliantly defensively, Rico Patricelli at shortstop.
- 5:52The catcher, the only member of this team that starts who's been in the World Series before, hitting 167, and this one, Elston Howard.
- 6:03And the pitcher, 26-year-old, 6-foot, 4-inch, 195-pound, Gary Waselowski, who during the regular season won two, lost two for the Red Sox, won five, lost six for Toronto.
- 6:19The governor of Massachusetts, with whom we enjoyed a lobster dinner last night, John Volpe, he's in the commissioner's box, Commissioner Bill Eckert, John McHale, commissioner's assistant.
- 6:38Let's see who's going to throw out the first ball.
- 6:47I don't think you caught that. United States Marine Corporal Robert P. Blanchett, Sturbridge, Massachusetts, wounded last May in Vietnam, presently recuperating in his home in Sturbridge.
- 7:01He's just tossed out the first ball. Elston Howard returns the ball to him as a souvenir, and the Red Sox take the field.
- 7:09The wind is blowing towards right field at about 10 to 20 miles an hour out of the west. So as the Red Sox take their positions, moving into the microphone to give you the play-by-play on the first portion of the ballgame,
- 7:24the former great shot stop for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Kurt Gowdy's partner on NBC's Game of the Week, and my good friend, Pee-wee Reese.
- 7:34Thank you, Harry. Gary Waslewski, taking the mound, ready for his warm-up pitches, and while he's taking his warm-up pitches, we'll pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 7:48KMOX, KMOX-FM, St. Louis, earned 5% on savings certificates, the highest return on insured savings in the area, at the blue chip of the savings business, Community Federal.
- 8:02Back here at Fenway Park, the sixth game of the World Series. The big, tall right-hander, starting for the Boston Red Sox.
- 8:12As Harry told you, he was not eligible for the series until Darryl Brandon, the big right-hander, got hurt for the Red Sox.
- 8:24He was put on the eligible list two days before the series started. He pitched three fine innings in Saturday's game.
- 8:34He struck out three, didn't walk a man, and they did not get a hit off of him.
- 8:39Dick Williams, a manager for the Red Sox who likes to play hunches, said this is the best man he thinks right now that can beat this Cardinal ball club, so he started it.
- 8:57Peely, an oddity, I think. You know, the team that scored first in each of the previous five games has won. Whoever scored first has gone on to win the ball again.
- 9:09And talking about scoring first, here is a fellow that the Red Sox must keep off of those sacks. His name, Lou Brock.
- 9:19He's got eight hits in the series. He has scored five runs. He'll be followed by Kurt Flood, Roger Maris, Gary Waslusty looking down at Lou Brock.
- 9:31Elton Howard giving the sign. Here is the pitch to Lou Brock. He tries to punt one down the third baseline.
- 9:40Looks like he held back on it. He held up on it. He thought he had caught Foy back a little bit, but Foy's about three steps in.
- 9:51Howard said something to Paul Pryor behind home play, but it's ball one. Here's the pitch. There's a ball hit off the left.
- 9:59Yostrefsky going over out in left field. Here are the stands. Can he get it? Just missed it. He jumped up off on the side of the wall.
- 10:10Almost came up with that ball. Carl Yostrefsky. And he knows that ball like the back of his hand. He's been over there numerous times, I'm sure.
- 10:21Now that it counts as one ball and one strike on Lou Brock, Waslusty looks around at his outfield. He's a big, tall fellow.
- 10:31Six-four, weighs 195 pounds. He's 26 years old. Here's the windup, the pitch. A curveball in there. Paul's right through.
- 10:41And you'll be hearing that yelling all day. Well, let's see. Lou Brock walked away.
- 10:51He thought that first pitch that you were undecided about, and what you had thought that he had tried to bunt it, he too thought he had tried to bunt it,
- 10:59and he thought he was out on strikes. He had walked over. Paul Pryor, the plate umpire, must feel a little bit embarrassed about that.
- 11:07Well, I guess I wasn't wrong, because Lou Brock thought he had bunted to the ball, also. He started to walk away. Pryor called him back and said,
- 11:15there's only two strikes on you. No one else says a thing. One ball and two strikes. The windup, the pitch.
- 11:22That got him. Struck him out. Elston Howard caught the ball in the pick-up seat. Tag Lou Brock.
- 11:29So the first batter that Wazlowski faces, he strikes out. And that brings up Kirk Flood.
- 11:38As I said, Wazlowski pitches a lot like Jim Longboard. He has a sinker. Curveball, fastball. Here's the pitch by Wazlowski.
- 11:49A tap out to the second base of Mike Andrews. He has it. Flips the ball over the shot.
- 11:54That's all for Kirk Flood, two up and two down here. And the top half of the first inning.
- 12:00And that brings up Roger Maris. Roger Maris has had quite a series. He's had one home run. Six runs battered in.
- 12:08Six for 19. The outfield is pulled around to the right. You know he slapped the double in left field.
- 12:21Against Santiago over in Busch Stadium. It's the ball where it's pitched. Here's the pitch by Wazlowski.
- 12:30Swing it in. That's one. Wazlowski has that sinkerball working.
- 12:37Against the sinkerball pitcher, you must make him bring the ball up. If you swing at that ball below your knees, you lift those grounders all day.
- 12:46That's the pitch. Fastball outside. Makes account of one ball and one strike. Elston Howard out in front of that home plate.
- 12:56One of the real fine catchers of all time, Elston Howard. He's giving the signs. Holds that target right in the middle. Here's the pitch.
- 13:04Swing it in. Strike two. One ball and two strikes on Roger Maris.
- 13:11Anyway, if this youngster keeps that stuff all afternoon long, it's going to be a tough day for the Cardinals.
- 13:19One ball, two strikes on Roger Maris. It's two away. Fenway Park, the sixth game of the World Series.
- 13:25The foul straight back. And the count remains one ball and two strikes.
- 13:29He seems faster here than he did in that relief stint in St. Louis. And if you recall, he struck out Brock.
- 13:35First time he faced him there and the first time he faces him here today, he struck him out.
- 13:43We're in the top half, the first inning. No score in this ball game. It's two away. The Cardinals.
- 13:50At bat, Roger Maris. Wazlowski taking a little time. Elston Howard giving the sign.
- 13:55Into the windup, Wazlowski. The pitch. Foul straight back on the screen. Maris hanging tough.
- 14:05Defensively for the Red Sox, Scott at first, Andrews at second, Petrocelli at shortstop, Foy at third.
- 14:12In left field, Jastrowski. In center field, Reggie Smith. Right field, Ken Hurst. The catcher, Elston Howard.
- 14:18And the pitcher, Gary Wazlowski. And here comes the pitch right now. He's taken out.
- 14:25That's all for Roger Maris. And that's all for the Cardinals. The top half, the first inning.
- 14:30For the score. After one half in the play, it's the Cardinals nothing and the Red Sox coming to bat.
- 14:39It's what's up front that counts. And up front ahead of the filter.
- 14:59Only Winston has the good, good taste. That comes from filter blend. Filter blend means line tobacco for the best taste yet.
- 15:14That's why Winston is America's largest selling cigarette.
- 15:21Winston's out front because up front only Winston has filter blend. Choice golden tobaccos specially selected for the best taste in filter cigarettes.
- 15:36Winston tastes good like a cigarette should. Winston.
- 15:45Gary Carey with Pee Wee Reese at Fenway Park. Gary Wazlowski who had retired nine Cardinals in a row in St. Louis in the third game of the series.
- 15:53Just retired the first three he faced here as the Cardinals went down one, two, three.
- 15:58So now he has retired twelve men in a row as Joe Foy steps into the batter's box to lead it off for the Red Sox, Pee Wee.
- 16:06Okay Harry, Joe Foy inserted in the lineup the last game over at St. Louis. He and Mike Andrews and Ken Harrelson back in there today.
- 16:16The first pitch by Hughes low and outside. Ball one. On next circle Mike Andrews. He'll be followed by Carl Yostremski.
- 16:25Fenway Park, the sixth game of the World Series. Nick Hughes not taking too much time. That ball has popped up.
- 16:31Second baseman Javier underneath it calls for it and takes it for out number one. So Joe Foy starting off with the Red Sox here. Pops up.
- 16:44That'll bring up Mike Andrews. Andrews two for five in the series. Four hundred. Real fine second baseman. This is the 64th World Series.
- 16:54The American League teams have a 38 to 25 edge in the series competition. The National League has won eight of the last 13 series.
- 17:03Of course the National League got clobbered last year. Mike Andrews first pitch. Outside. Ball one.
- 17:09The Baltimore Orioles beat the Dodgers. Four straight games. Hughes pitching to Mike Andrews. They count one ball and no strike.
- 17:18Hughes looking down. He's catching McCarvey. Here's the pitch. Ball hit hard and on the left field. Luke Rock going back for the scoreboard and takes it right in front of the scoreboard for out number two.
- 17:28That ball was hit right on the nose. The wind is blowing towards right field. It'll hold up the ball and hit towards left. Carl Yostremski.
- 17:40It's a nice hand. He deserves it. Yostremski has two home runs in the series. Batting 333. Six for 18.
- 17:55Remember it was Yostremski hitting a home run to break up a nothing-nothing pitching duel. Hughes first pitch to him. Fast ball in there. Strike one.
- 18:04Off Dick Hughes. It was Hughes against Lomborg in the second game of the series and Yostremski hit a homer to put the Red Sox into the lead one to nothing in the fourth inning.
- 18:15One strike on Yostremski. Hughes looking down at McCarvey. McCarvey giving the sign. Here's the pitch. A change up. It's outside. One ball and one strike.
- 18:27Try to keep the ball away from Carl Yostremski. He used to hit a lot of balls out toward that Green Monster left field. Here's the pitch. Fast ball. Low and outside. Ball two.
- 18:43But this year he did a lot of pulling. It was quite successful. He hit 27 home runs at Fenway Park and 17 on the road. Here's the pitch.
- 18:54Ground error. It's a foul ball. Sepeda the first basing up with his football back to Hughes.
- 19:00Two and two defensively for the Cardinals. Sepeda at first. Javier at second. Max Fuller at short. At third Mike Shannon in left field Lou Brock.
- 19:09In center field Kurt Flood. In right field Roger Maras. The catcher Tim McCarver and the pitcher Dick Hughes.
- 19:17The count on the hitter Yostremski two and two. Here's the pitch. Foul right straight up here for us.
- 19:24Everything all right Harry? Don't worry Peeway I'll protect you. Count is two and two on Carl Yostremski.
- 19:32Dick Hughes the winningest pitcher for the Cardinals this year. He won 16 games and lost six. Yostremski holds that bat high. Here's the pitch for Hughes.
- 19:45Inside. Makes a count three and two. That was a curve ball. McCarver massaging that ball. Fits it ball back to Hughes.
- 19:57Hughes is about the same size as Wazlowski. A little bit heavier. He's 6'3". Weighs 200 pounds. Here's the pitch.
- 20:07Yostremski pops it up. McCarver looks at it. Back in the stands. No chance.
- 20:14Hughes, excuse me Peeway, Yostremski's had a couple of real good pitches to hit but has fouled them off.
- 20:20I think he would like to have that one back. I think so too.
- 20:25Hughes does not take a wind up. He just holds the glove right in front of him as he's doing right now. Gets his sign.
- 20:33Yostremski backs out of there. All prior to the National League, the umpire. Fine on plate. Called sign.
- 20:43Holding that hand up in the air. Yostremski back in the box. Little jittery. Hughes just standing out there holding the glove.
- 20:51Here's the pitch. And it's fouled straight back. A good fast ball inside part of that point.
- 20:57It's two away. The count is three and two on Yostremski. We're in the bottom half of the first inning here at Fenway Park.
- 21:06St. Louis failed a score in the top half of the first inning as Wazlowski looked great. He struck out two men.
- 21:14Hughes, count of three and two on Yostremski. Here's the pitch. A change up.
- 21:20Ground to the subpoena. Ball in five. Out in the right field. Yostremski. Thank you for two. No he makes a big turn at first base and back in there.
- 21:34That ball was hit hard. Right at subpoena. We'll have to wait and see whether he gets a hit on error. And they gave Yostremski a hit.
- 21:54And that brings up Ken Harrelson. Talking to Harrelson before the game started. And Bobby Doerr. The batting coach for the Red Sox.
- 22:05They have moved Harrelson up on the plate. He's gotten a little bit closer to his work and he says he may break loose today.
- 22:12Let's see what happens. Dick Hughes flips the ball over to Sepetit first. Yostremski with not too much of a lead. It's two away.
- 22:21Base runner on at first base is Yostremski. Hughes looking down. He's set. Here's the pitch. Harrelson swings and misses. Strike one.
- 22:33As Harry told you, Hughes spent nine years in the minor leagues. He said it was a long, tough fight getting up here. But it was worth it.
- 22:46And they say what helped him stay here was that Billy Muffet, the pitching coach for the Cardinals, taught him this no-wind up pitch of his and gave him control.
- 22:55Here's the pitch. He's swinging the miss. Strike two. As Hughes threw the ball right by Harrelson.
- 23:02That's been his best fastball, P.W. It looks like he got what he'd been trying to throw a little earlier. Real good fastball.
- 23:15Dick Hughes pitching to Ken Harrelson. Yostremski on at first. Hughes comes set, looks over to Strip. Here's the pitch.
- 23:24It's a curveball, a breaking pitch outside. Makes a count. One ball and two strikes.
- 23:30The umpire today prior behind home plate the National League. At first base, Stevens. At second base, Al Barlich. At third base, Humont.
- 23:38Down the line, Barlich, Donatelli at left field. There goes the runner. It's a little tap foul down the third baseline.
- 23:47Yostremski going back to first. Down the right field line, it's Ed Runge.
- 23:55Count remains. One ball and two strikes on Ken Harrelson. In this series, he has one hit in six times at bat.
- 24:05If you remember correctly, he drove in the first run in Monday's game over Bush. Here's the pitch to Harrelson. He's struck him out.
- 24:16So that's all for Ken Harrelson. That's all for the Red Sox here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 24:21The score after one inning in play, the Cardinals nothing and the Red Sox nothing.
- 24:33Going into the top of the second, Orlando Cepeda who's been stopped cold by the Boston pitching staff.
- 24:40He's had only two hits in the series, both doubles. He's hitting 150 and he'll be leading it off for the Cardinals in the top of the second with no score in this ball game.
- 24:51Yes sir, Cepeda's had a little trouble so far in this series. When the sixth game, Wazlowski into the windup. The pitch, sidearm fastball inside ball one.
- 25:06Wazlowski's three-quarter sidearm. His ball runs in on a right-handed hitter. Cepeda holding that bat straight up in the air.
- 25:16Here's Wazlowski, the pitch. Fastball right in there, call strike one. One ball, one strike on Cepeda as he backs out of there.
- 25:28Saying something to the umpire, Paul Pryor. Cepeda has two hits and 19 times at bat. Wazlowski taking the sign from Elston Howard.
- 25:39The windup, the pitch, her ball, it's popped up. So far the third baseman may have a chance for it. It went and brings it back in, way back in.
- 25:51And he takes it for out number one.
- 25:57So Cepeda, still having a little trouble getting a base hit. And that's been the one reason, one of the reasons that the Cardinals had a little trouble scoring.
- 26:12Here's another fellow, McCarver has two for 16 batting 125. He's having a little trouble. Left-handed hitter, the big catcher, passed over that plate.
- 26:23Backs out now, Paul Pryor calling time. They play him a bat straight away.
- 26:30The foy, Joe Foy, the third baseman is in on the grass. A good sinker low and outside, ball one by Wazlowski.
- 26:40It's one away. We're in the top half, the second in ink. Harry Carey and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you the sixth game of the World Series here in Boston.
- 26:49And how beautiful day it is. You never thought it if you'd have been here last night. Couldn't ask for a better day.
- 26:59Wazlowski looking down at his catcher. Here's the pitch, the windup. Ground ball out the shortstop. Petticelli has it up over to George Scott.
- 27:09And that's all for McCarver. That brings up Mike Shannon. Mike Shannon, he has four for 16. Has one home run.
- 27:31Big right-handed hitter. Third baseman for the Cardinals. Up there right now. Back in that batter's buck, Wazlowski, the windup. Here's the pitch.
- 27:44Straight to this on a curve ball. This fellow looks to me like he could be a little rough.
- 27:55One strike on Mike Shannon. Wazlowski, the windup. The pitch. Curve ball. Just got the outside corner. Strike two.
- 28:07So quickly, Wazlowski gets ahead of Mike Shannon.
- 28:19The infieler. Move back a little bit more. Now with two strikes on Shannon, especially Joe Foy at third base.
- 28:28The 0-2 pitch to Shannon. Here it is. Saddam Kerrball just missed. One ball and two strikes.
- 28:39The on-deck circle. Pooley and Javier. He's had quite a series. Into the windup, Wazlowski. The pitch. Kerrball missed. Outside. Two balls and two strikes.
- 29:01Wazlowski. A little bit slower. Mike Shannon. In the box. Two and twos account on him. They're two away.
- 29:14Into the windup. The pitch by Wazlowski. A grounder after shortstop. Petruselli. Up with it. The long throw over to Scott.
- 29:21And that's all for Mike Shannon. And that's all for the Cardinals here at the top half of the second and even. No runs, no hits, and nowhere. So the score after one and a half inning of play, it's the Samples Cardinals. Nothing. The Boston Red Sox. Nothing.
- 29:42Now, Romeo said, Julie, baby, our little compact is a bust. I've been down to see the Dodge boys. Got a band that's dark for us.
- 29:56I give a fever. Dodge fever. We're the sleek-sheet fever that's got everyone. Fever. You're gonna love it. That's why that is number one. You get the fever. Dodge fever. You get the fever. Dodge fever.
- 30:20And for a great deal on America's first choice in compacts, the man-sized Dodge Dart. See your nearby Dodge dealer. He'll show you why Dart is America's largest-selling six-passenger compact. And with his great Dart deals, he's going to keep it there.
- 30:42Bottom half of the second inning. George Scott leading off with the Red Sox. No score in this ballgame. One hit. Carl Yastrowski has one for Boston. Scott batting 222. The first pitch by Dick Hughes in there. Strike one.
- 31:01Dick Hughes. Here's the pitch. Hit out in the left field. Will the wind get a hold of it? Yes. Lou Brock coming back in a couple of steps and takes it for out number one. And George Scott almost got that one.
- 31:15We've talked so much about this Green Monster wall out in the left field. It's about 300 feet down the left field line. A concrete wall about 15 feet, then it has a tin wall about 40, 45 feet, then a screen on top of that.
- 31:40Made a lot of pitchers come up with a sore arm when they see this short left field fence. Reggie Smith is the hitter. He wants to look at the ball. Paul Pryor throws it out. So it's one away, brings up the center fielder. Reggie Smith.
- 31:59One away. Batting left-handed against the right-hander, Dick Hughes. Here's the pitch to Reggie. That's a ball a little bit too low. Ball one. McCarver bouncing around behind home plate.
- 32:16Reggie Smith led the Red Sox. There's a ball hit out in the left field. Right field. Roger Maris right there and takes it for out number two. Two balls. Pretty hard. One to left and one to right.
- 32:33What to say about Reggie Smith. He has good speed. He led the Red Sox and stole the place in the 16th. Rico Petrocelli is a hitter with two away. Dick Hughes standing staring down at his catcher. Here's the pitch.
- 32:47Her ball. At the outset, Connor strike one. Petrocelli having a little trouble getting a base hit. He's one for 14 in the series. Here's the pitch by Hughes. That's a ball hit. It's gonna be gone. A whole run for Rico Petrocelli.
- 33:17He didn't need any short left field fans on that. That would have been a whole run in any park in America. He really pounced on it.
- 33:37That brings up Elston Howard. Steal two away. Dick Hughes first pitch to him. In there. Call strike one. And you are so right Harry. That could have been, as I've said so many times, it would have been a home run in any park. Yellowstone Park.
- 33:54Elston Howard tries to check his swing. Gets a piece of it. Strike two. Petrocelli could have been a slider Harry and he really creamed it. It was up. Those short stops like to hit that high pitch.
- 34:10The 0-2 pitch to Elston Howard. One half for the Javier. Over to Cepeda. And that's all for Elston Howard and that's all for the Red Sox in the bottom half of the second inning. But they came up with one run on one big hit. And the score after two innings of play is the Red Sox 1 and the set goes Cardinals nothing.
- 34:29Hi. My name is Homer Mittens and I want to tell you about a funny thing. You see, I'm a man and I have these habituals I do every morning. Open my eyes. Stretch. Get out of bed. Things like that. I do them every morning.
- 34:43And another thing I do, I shave. Because I find times to make my face less hairy. So anyway, one night I see this commercial on television for the Gillette Super Stainless Blade. You know, with the miracle plaster coating on the edge. And here's the funny thing, see. They call it the spoiler.
- 35:00Because once you try it, you're supposed to get spoiled. You know, I'm a grown man. I have tantrums and things like that. So anyway, I buy a pack and I bring them home that night. I don't shave at night because that's not one of my habituals. But the next morning I go into, can I say bathroom?
- 35:16I go into the bathroom and I shave with them. And you know what? It really is great. And I really can't go back to my old ways of shaving. But to say I'm spoiled, come on. I'm merely an astute judge of shaving apparatus, if you know what I mean.
- 35:33We've had two innings of this ballgame. The Red Sox one run, two hits, no errors. The Cardinals nothing across. They haven't had a man reach base. I mentioned before the game, Peewee, that previously in this World Series, the team that scored first went on to win each game. The Red Sox have scored first today. Will that hold up?
- 35:53I was just thinking, Harry, are you trying to tell me something? Oh, that's been true. Seems like the team that gets out of that gate first, they seem to be the winner. Wazlowski has looked great too.
- 36:09Retired sixth man in a row, struck out Brock in the first inning and Maris, that's the pay to the pop up to four at third. McCarver and Shannon, both grounded out to Rico Petracella, the shortstop.
- 36:27They're going to the top half of the third inning and here's a fellow that's had quite a series. Made a couple of great outstanding plays out at second base. He has six for 17, batting.353.
- 36:43Uli Javier, he'll be followed by Dal Maxwell, the shortstop, and the pitcher Dick Hughes. Wazlowski into the windup, the pitch to Javier. Curve ball hit out into left field. That ball could be off the wall.
- 37:01Yastrinsky back there, it is right off the top of the wall. Yastrinsky cannot pick it up. Javier into second with a stand up double. That didn't miss being a homer by more than an inch or two, P.
- 37:14We had hit right on the very top of the green monster as it were. Another couple of inches higher and it had hit the screen. Yes sir, it almost scraped that screen on top of the green monster.
- 37:29That was very close to being a home run. So Javier keeps it going. Gets his seventh hit in the series, a first hit in this ball game by the way. A double by Javier.
- 37:43Starting things off here in the top half of the third inning for the Cardinals. Maxwell, the little shortstop's a hitter. Let's see if he tries to hit the ball in the right field to get Javier over to third.
- 37:55Javier likes to run and can run. Wazlowski checking Javier at second. Here's the pitch. Ball to shortstop. Pepa-Selli up with it over to shortstop and Javier had the hole at the back.
- 38:11Maxwell grounding out six to three. And this is one thing here that the Cardinals very seldom do. They usually make the little fundamental plays like hitting that ball to the right with a runner on second and no one out.
- 38:29Especially a fellow like Maxwell who's made a career out of hitting the ball to right field but I think Wazlowski just pulled him with a pitch in on his hands and he couldn't get it over there. Instead wound up pulling the ball to the shortstop.
- 38:41Hic-Hugh's a hitter. It's one away. Javier down at second. The pitch. A good cut. No contact. Strike one. Yeah, it looks pretty easy sometimes just to hit that ball to right field but it ain't.
- 38:59No runs. One hit for the Cardinals. For the Red Sox, one run and two hits. We're in the top half of third inning. One away. Wazlowski looks back at Javier at second. Pepa-Selli breaks in back of him. Back over his position. Here's the pitch.
- 39:13Fastball in there. Call strike two. Pepa-Selli trying to keep Javier close at second base as Mike Andrew the second baseman playing Hughes to hit the right. He's way off to the right.
- 39:36Almost on the grass. Pepa-Selli comes up in back of him now. Wazlowski. Pitch to Hughes. He strikes him out.
- 39:49So that's the third strikeout for Gary Wazlowski as Dick Hughes has a good ripple of that bat but didn't make any contact. Lou Brock struck out his first time.
- 40:11He wants to take a look at the ball. Elston Hards gives it to Paul Pryor. They throw it out.
- 40:23Javier started the inning off with a double off of the green monster, the left field wall. Just barely missed being a home run.
- 40:33But he's still down there after two men out. Lou Brock having a chance to tie this game up. He has a closed stance.
- 40:43He hits the ball words pitch. Label hitter to the left. Back through the middle to the right. Wazlowski. Here's the pitch to it.
- 40:51He's got to keep the ball down. It's a little outside. Ball one. Brock, a good high ball hitter. He can flap the ball but he also has good power.
- 41:10He's in his second World Series. He hit.300 in the 64 series and did not have a stolen base. Wazlowski looking back at his runner.
- 41:23Here's the pitch. Fast ball outside. Ball two. Pitching very carefully to Brock who's been a hot hitter in the series.
- 41:33He has a base open but Brock represents a lead run. He doesn't want to walk him intentionally but with a right-handed batter coming up next he wants to make sure he doesn't make a mistake to Brock.
- 41:43That's right and the right-handed batter had a real good year. He hit.335 but in the series Kurt's having a little trouble.
- 41:51So I imagine Wazlowski would rather pitch to Flood than he would to Brock right now. Is that right? He's pitching rather carefully right now to Brock.
- 42:01He's going to count two balls and no strikes on him. Wazlowski. Here's a pitch to Brock. A grounder. Can he get to it? No sir. It's a base hit out in the right field.
- 42:09Here comes Javier in to score the tying run. As with a count of two balls and no strikes on him, Wazlowski comes in there and Brock gets a base hit.
- 42:26So that's the second hit given up by Wazlowski. Wazlowski elected a pitch to Lou Brock.
- 42:36They say that Wazlowski has a real fine move to first base. He had better have because Brock likes to run. Kurt Flood, there's the pitch. Over to first base. A good move. Two away.
- 42:53One run, two hits for both clubs. Another throw to first base and he does have a good move Harry. I thought I should say he does.
- 43:05That's Brock's ninth hit of the series. He leads all hitters in total hits but it was his first run batted in.
- 43:11Two away. In the top half of the third inning, Wazlowski trying to hold Brock close at first base. Brock trying to get that good lead. Wazlowski looking down his catcher, Elson Howard.
- 43:27He takes his time. Here's a pitch and there goes Brock. The pitch is swung on. The throw. Did he get it? He saves.
- 43:38He now has had four stolen bases, nine hits, five runs scored, one run batted in. He's got a pretty good chance to be the star of the series.
- 43:47And he was your pick at the start of it. I had that in mind. It's nice of you to bring it up.
- 43:53Luke Brock after Wazlowski making a couple of quick throws over the first base to try to hold him there, he took off the first time he went home and he's down in second with a stolen base.
- 44:08The game is all tied up one and one. Wazlowski looks back at Brock.
- 44:13They set out into left field. They may have a chance to get Yostrimski up the ball. Here comes the throw. Can they get him? He's safe.
- 44:23That was a ball that was hit hard in the hole on the ground after Yostrimski in left field.
- 44:30Now Brock, as you know, has tremendous speed. Yostrimski has one of the best throwing arms you'd want to see.
- 44:38He charged that ball, but they could not get him. As Luke Brock came in there, hit first.
- 44:47He's the only man that would have scored on that play. That's how final play Yostrimski made. He almost had him at the play. Anybody but Brock would have been out.
- 44:56I believe you're right. Kurt Flood on the first base to throw over there. Not in time. Roger Maris is a hitter.
- 45:03Wazlowski's pitch to Roger Maris. Face hit out into right field. Kurt Flood making the turn. Will he go to third? Yes, sir.
- 45:10Here comes a throw by Harrelson, but not in time to get Kurt Flood as the ball is cut off at second base by Petruzzelli.
- 45:18It's two away. Orlando Cepeda up there right now. He popped out to the Joe Foy third base. His first time up.
- 45:27Wazlowski's pitch to him. Purrball outside. Ball one. Brock single. Flood single. Maris single.
- 45:36Here's the pitch to Cepeda. Grounded down to Joe Foy at third. Up to the ball. One handed.
- 45:41The long throw over to George Scott. That's all for Cepeda. That's all for the Cardinals here in the top half of the third inning.
- 45:49But they came up with two big runs. So the score after two and a half innings of play is the St. Willis Cardinals two and the Boston Red Sox one.
- 45:56They're going to the bottom half of the third inning.
- 46:03There's Wazlowski. The first hitter for the Red Sox. The Red Sox trail by a score of two to one.
- 46:13Dick Hughes. First pitch to Wazlowski. Swung out and missed. Strike one.
- 46:23Petrocelli hit a home run for the Boston Red Sox on their run. Here's a pitch by Hughes. Purrball. Swung on and missed. Strike two.
- 46:31Wazlowski will be followed by Joe Foy and Mike Andrews.
- 46:37Dick Hughes looking for his first win in the World Series. He lost one. The second game against L'Anne Borg.
- 46:45He struck Gary Wazlowski out on a good fastball. Just got that outside corner. He was caught looking.
- 46:55That's the second strikeout for Dick Hughes. Brings up Joe Foy.
- 47:01He popped up his first time to Javier.
- 47:08Hughes does not take too much time on the mound as we've said. McCarver giving the signs. He just stands there at that ball in his glove.
- 47:16Does not make too much of a move. Here's a pitch. A slider that's high and inside. Ball one.
- 47:26Sepated first, Javier at second. Max foot short. Channing at third. Here's a pitch. A good fastball. Just got the outside corner. One ball and one strike.
- 47:35Really Hughes throws his slider so hard it's hard to distinguish whether it's a fastball or a slider.
- 47:44One ball and one strike. The pitch. It's popped up again. Max foot shortstop. Channing his eyes. He backs up and takes it for out number two.
- 47:59Joe Foy popping out to Dow Maxfield. The Cardinals have four hits. And two runs. The Red Sox have one run on two hits.
- 48:15Mike Andrews hit a line drive to Lou Brock in left field his last time up. Here's a pitch that's outside. Ball one. A breaking pitch.
- 48:28Juan O's account on Mike. They play him straight away. He chokes up on the bat. The pitch by Hughes. It's popped up.
- 48:37Mike Shannon at third over Tim McCarver. Shannon calls for it in foul territory and takes it for the third out.
- 48:44So that's all for Andrews and that's all for the Red Sox in the bottom half of the third inning. No runs, no hits, no errors. No one left on base.
- 48:50The score after three things of play. The Cardinals two and the Red Sox one.
- 48:59Most of us enjoy watching the strategy of these World Series managers. When one of them sends up a left-handed pinch hitter, the other is just likely to counter by waving a south pole to the mound.
- 49:12For every move, there's a counter move, right? Well, you know, it won't be long now before winter makes its move and all of us are going to have to meet it.
- 49:22And when ice and snow cover the road, the safest counter move you can make is B.F. Goodrich's Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires.
- 49:30Trailmakers give your car real digging power. The deep biting edges digging deep to keep you going.
- 49:39The full-fine nylon car construction means many winters of safe driving miles.
- 49:45B.F.G. Trailmaker snow tires can be yours for no money now. And insulation is free, too.
- 49:52If you need extra traction, you can get your trailmakers with steel safety studs. So don't be outmaneuvered by snow and ice.
- 50:01Stay on top of winter with Trailmaker Silver Towns from your B.F. Goodrich store art dealer.
- 50:10Well, we're going to the top half, the fourth inning, and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to bring this fellow back into the mic.
- 50:17He's always done a professional job, and he has done for many years. He's been the boss of the Cardinals since 1946.
- 50:24I know you enjoy listening to him. My friend, Harry Carey. Come on in, Harry.
- 50:27Thank you very much, Peewee, and hello again, everybody. Tim McCarver will lead it off as we go on to the top of the fourth.
- 50:32The Cardinals are out in front two to one. Two runs, four hits, no errors for the Redbirds. One run, two hits, no errors for Boston.
- 50:39A capacity crowd, of course. It's almost redundant to even mention a crowd here.
- 50:45You know that it's jam-packed every day at this small Fenway Park. McCarver hasn't had a good World Series.
- 50:53He's had two out of 17 so far. Left-handed batter against Gary Wasilewski.
- 50:58The wind-up, the first pitch. Fastball in there at the knees, a strike is called.
- 51:03Foy playing wide at third base. The outfield plays McCarver straight away, hits the ball to all fields.
- 51:10The second baseman, Andrews, plays him a little bit to pull. One strike and no ball.
- 51:16The wind-up by Wasilewski, the pitch. Curveball low and outside. That evened it up for the ball and the strike.
- 51:23Nobody on, nobody out, top of the fourth. Cardinals out in front two to one in the sixth game of the World Series.
- 51:31Wasilewski gets his signal. Rangey right-hander delivers. Ground ball to the first baseman, Scott.
- 51:37He gobbles it up, races to the bag, easy on it. One gone, and the Red Sox put the ball around.
- 51:44Gary Wasilewski, who was born in Meridian, Connecticut, now lives in Kensington, Connecticut,
- 51:51attended the University of Connecticut for a year, originally signed with the Pittsburgh organization.
- 51:57He was drafted by the Red Sox from the Pirate organization after the 64th season.
- 52:02This is eighth year in professional baseball. Mike Shannon the batter, one out and nobody on.
- 52:10The pitch to him is a fastball, high and tight.
- 52:23Blue Brock stole his fourth base of the World Series in that Cardinal third inning.
- 52:29Here's the pitch. Swung and he missed the fastball.
- 52:35And this would be a new record for a six-game series, breaking the record of three by Eddie Collins
- 52:41and the White Sox back in 1917. Mike Shannon, one ball, one strike.
- 52:49The pitch by Wasilewski, swung, ground ball, sharply hit to Petracelli.
- 52:53Knocks it down, picks it up and throws, safe. Let's see how they're going to curl that.
- 53:00The ball was hit very hard at Petracelli. It's an error. An error charge to Rico.
- 53:06An excusable error on that one because that ball was hit like a shot.
- 53:11So with one out, the Cardinals have a baserunner and here's Houli and Javier who started that third inning
- 53:16with a double off the top of the left field wall, then missed being a homer by no more than a couple of inches.
- 53:22Javier having a fine world series with seven out of 18.
- 53:30Scrabbles the plate. That's the kind of hitter. If you make a mistake on him, he's a home run threat.
- 53:37He can hit the ball a mile. Shannon the lead, Wasilewski from the belt.
- 53:43Ready to fire. Now time is called as he took so much time on the hesitation.
- 53:51Knock Javier off his rhythm up there and he called for time.
- 53:56No balls, no strikes on Houli and Javier. Runner at first base, one out.
- 54:00The Cardinals lead him two to one. We're in the top of the fourth.
- 54:08Wasilewski taking a lot of time. Lances off the shoulder. Here's the pitch.
- 54:16It's in there for a strike call. Sidearm fastball.
- 54:21Wasilewski, you'd figure, would be very tough on the right-handed hitters.
- 54:26He started wheels from the side, has a good sinking fastball.
- 54:32Throws a pound ball too as his change of pace. There's Shannon the lead, one out.
- 54:39The pitch, low and outside. That evens it up with a ball and a strike.
- 54:44Javier, who hit 281 during the regular season with 14 homers, drove in 64 runs.
- 54:51In this series he's hitting around 400 with 8, with 7 out of 18.
- 55:04Four of his eight hits, four of his seven hits have been doubles by the way for Javier.
- 55:11He leads in the series and doubles with four.
- 55:15He comes over to dry his hands off as Wasilewski seems to be getting in his hair a little bit with his delayed style of pitching.
- 55:25Harry, I believe that Javier kept checking with the coach at third base there at Joel's Shoals.
- 55:30They may see something come on. I know Javier can handle that bat. They may have a hit and run on here.
- 55:34If it's a ball here, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Shannon take off.
- 55:38He pitches out. He must have had the same thought in mind, Peewee, and his ball too.
- 55:44Two balls and a strike, one out and one on.
- 55:47All game in the fourth inning they want to look at the baseball. The playdumpier, Paul Pryor, examines it and tosses it back to Wasilewski.
- 55:58Nobody ever threw a spitball in a World Series, did they? Never happened.
- 56:03Two balls and a strike. Shannon, a lead off first base. Scott holding them back.
- 56:10Wasilewski whirls and throws over there, but he's safe standing up.
- 56:14Two balls and a strike. Dick Sissler coaching at first base. Joel's Shoals at third base.
- 56:19Cardinal's leading two to one. We're in the top of the fourth.
- 56:25The outfield playing Javier straight away. There's the pitch. Popped up.
- 56:32In foul territory, Joe Foy, the third baseman, and makes the catch, actually in fair territory.
- 56:39Saw how the air pops to Foy. He had a good pitch to hit that time, but popped it up.
- 56:44So with two out down, Maxville, the shot's down.
- 56:47You know, Rico Petraselli, I guess he wouldn't mind if Hughes pitched every day.
- 56:52He's had two hits in the series and both came off Dick Hughes.
- 56:58He's driven in two runs in the series and both were driven in against Hughes.
- 57:03It was Petraselli's home run that started the scoring today.
- 57:07Here's Maxville. Likes to hit for the opposite field. Throw to first, the runner is back.
- 57:14Maxville is a hitter the Cardinals like to hit and run with.
- 57:19But with two out in the pitcher coming up next, not much probability of that.
- 57:27A lead by Shannon and the fifth.
- 57:30Fly ball, deep center field, Reggie Smith, back, back, back. He's there and he makes the catch.
- 57:36Over his shoulder, a beautiful play in deep center.
- 57:40And so it's no run, no hits, one air, one left.
- 57:45We go into the bottom half of the fourth inning. The score remains.
- 57:48The Cardinals 2, the Red Sox 1.
- 57:58Now Cleopatra said to Tony, this barge would try from east or west.
- 58:06Let's go down and see the Dodge boys and treat it full of coal
- 58:11and let you get the fever, Dodge fever. When you see it, fever from the swinging style.
- 58:20Beaver!
- 58:211968 Carnet. It's a whole new style. Lively, with it.
- 58:27Inside is tall, wide room and deep comfort.
- 58:3168 Carnet, the lively, low-priced cure for Dodge fever.
- 58:36See it at your Dodge dealers now.
- 58:38We're going into the bottom of the fourth. It's 2-1.
- 58:41The scoring started with 2 out in the second inning when Rico Petroselli
- 58:45lined a savage home run off the left field screen.
- 58:49A home run that would have gone out of any ballpark.
- 58:52Then in the third, Javier let off with a double to just miss being a homer.
- 58:56The next two men went out.
- 58:58From the irrepressible, Lou Brock, single the right to score Javier with a tying run.
- 59:03And Flood single after Brock had stolen second for his fourth stolen base in the series
- 59:08to score Brock with a go-ahead run.
- 59:10And that's where we stand now.
- 59:12Here's Yostremski to lead off against Dick Hughes.
- 59:15The first bit. Slow curve is outside.
- 59:18Yostremski, home run off Hughes.
- 59:21Here in the second game of the series.
- 59:23So he's had 2 out of 3 against Dick Hughes.
- 59:26As a result of a single off Cepeda's glove in the first inning today.
- 59:30Bottom of the fourth, 2 to 1 St. Louis in the sixth game of the World Series.
- 59:35If the Cardinals win, it's the final game.
- 59:38Here's the pitch low with sinking fastball.
- 59:40If the Cardinals lose, it will be a seven game World Series with Gibson versus Lernbord tomorrow.
- 59:47And what a dramatic finish that one would be.
- 59:50Carl Yostremski ahead of Hughes with two balls, no strike.
- 59:57Fold it back.
- 1:00:00And you knew he'd be getting a cut if the pitcher was over that plate.
- 1:00:03Yostremski has him become famous by drawing bases on balls.
- 1:00:08It's hitting the ball out of the park that's made him the Triple Clown winner and the MVP.
- 1:00:1544 homers during the season. The pitch.
- 1:00:18There's a long drive. Might be out of here.
- 1:00:21It could be. It is a home run.
- 1:00:25Carl Yostremski.
- 1:00:51Hit a long drive. You wondered whether the wind might hold it up.
- 1:00:56Deep in the left center off the screen.
- 1:00:58And this game is tied up as the Red Sox are showing their muscle here tonight with two home runs.
- 1:01:04Here's Harrelson. The pitch is low.
- 1:01:07Dick Hughes. Struggling off since the game started.
- 1:01:12It's tied up on home runs by Pet Griselli and now Yostremski.
- 1:01:19Both home runs were well-kissed.
- 1:01:22Ken Harrelson fanned his first time up the pitch.
- 1:01:26There's a long drive. Deep left center. Way back is Throdden Rock.
- 1:01:30Blood's crawling for the ball at the 379 mark and he has it.
- 1:01:35Harrelson fly deep to flood.
- 1:01:38Now there's one that the wind had to hurt.
- 1:01:41Hit towards left center. The wind blowing out of the west towards right field.
- 1:01:45Saw that it drifted the ball towards the deeper point in center field where flood grabbed it.
- 1:01:50Here's George Scott. This crowd has really come to life.
- 1:01:55The Red Sox have come from behind to tie it now at 2-2.
- 1:02:00Yostremski's third homer of the series. Scott half swing on the first pitch. Strike one.
- 1:02:09Yostremski has hit two of his three home runs off-hue.
- 1:02:15Two runs, four hits, no errors for the Cardinals so far. Two runs, three hits, one error for the Red Sox.
- 1:02:22Here's a pitch to Scott. High, pop, foul, outside first, near the stands, out of play.
- 1:02:29Two strikes, no ball. Scott hasn't driven in a run in the series.
- 1:02:34The Red Sox hasn't had a homer in the series, hitting 2-22.
- 1:02:39During the regular season he hit 19 home runs.
- 1:02:43He's had four out of 19 so far.
- 1:02:50You know in the second game of this World Series with a score of nothing, nothing, here's a pitch, curve outside.
- 1:02:56Yostremski was the leadoff man in the fourth inning and drilled a line drive into the right field seats off-hues
- 1:03:03The Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
- 1:03:06Here's the pitch. Scott takes a curve low and outside to hit him enough.
- 1:03:11Hughes is struggling. He's not the same Hughes we saw many times during the regular season.
- 1:03:18He's not as quick and he's not as sharp.
- 1:03:22Two balls, two strikes. The pitch to Scott.
- 1:03:26Ground ball up the middle. Maxfield to his left nicely. The throw, he's on.
- 1:03:31Maxfield, Rome to his left near second base, scooped up Scott's roller and threw him up.
- 1:03:37That's two away and it brings up Reggie Smith.
- 1:03:44The similarity of situation. I mentioned in the second game how Yostremski, the first man up in the fourth in a homer to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
- 1:03:53They went on to shut out the Cardinals.
- 1:03:55Now today in the fourth inning he let off again. Another homerun, this time to left center to give the Red Sox a tie at 2-2.
- 1:04:04The pitch to Reggie Smith. Curve in there as strike call.
- 1:04:11Ball game in the bottom of the fourth, all tied up 2-2.
- 1:04:17Hughes' pitch to the left-hand batter inside forced him back a slider.
- 1:04:23And the count evens at a ball and a strike. Reggie Smith hit 15 homers during the regular season. He's had one homer in the series.
- 1:04:32Dick Hughes getting set. The spectacled right-hander, the pitch.
- 1:04:37Foul ball back and out of play. The Red Sox are getting good cuts.
- 1:04:43The Cardinals scored two runs with four hits in the third inning, a leadoff double by Hadi Edd and two outs singles by Brock, Flood, and Max.
- 1:04:54Nelson Briers has started to warm up in the bullpen for the Cardinals.
- 1:04:59He was the winner early in the series. Here's the pitch foul back and out of play.
- 1:05:05And the count, two strikes and a ball.
- 1:05:12Brials, you know, won the third game of the series 5-2 over the Red Sox.
- 1:05:19Reggie Smith digging in. Now Hughes is set. Here's the pitch. Change of pace one on a long ride.
- 1:05:27Might be out of here. It could be. It is a bull ride.
- 1:05:58Reggie Smith, second homer in the World Series, puts the Red Sox into the lead, 3-2.
- 1:06:03An off-speed pitch that he pulled right down the line. And here's Puck Vasili. No pitch.
- 1:06:10He swings with a curve, and if he'd have hit that one, that one would have gone out of here.
- 1:06:15They're getting some cuts at Hughes. They've hit three homers. And they lead 3-2. Each team now has had four hits.
- 1:06:24The pitch by Hughes, curveball outside. Nelson Brials working in the bullpen.
- 1:06:32And I would imagine the reason he hasn't come in is because Hughes is due to be the first batter up.
- 1:06:40Here's a pitch. One on a long ride. It might be out of here. It is a bull ride.
- 1:07:10The third homer of the inning. The second straight homer for Puck Vasili.
- 1:07:20The reason the manager, Red Cheney, I'm sure hasn't taken Hughes out is because he is the first man up in the fifth inning.
- 1:07:27And he wants to employ a pinch hitter. And he doesn't want to waste Brials. So he's got Ron Willis getting ready now.
- 1:07:34His red coming out slowly. And as he walks out, we'll pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:07:44Hi. This is Bob Richards. You know why the Cardinals made it into the series?
- 1:07:49Not because they were lucky. They got to the top the same way we all do, with hard work.
- 1:07:56And no matter who you are, that takes plenty of energy. The kind you get in Wheaties,
- 1:08:01with its protein, wheat germ, natural sugars, vitamins, and iron.
- 1:08:06It's a great tasting, energy packed way to start your day. So give them a try.
- 1:08:12Wheaties, breakfast of champions.
- 1:08:15KMOX, KMOX FM, St. Louis.
- 1:08:19With Pee Wee Reese, this is Harry Carrey at Fenway Park.
- 1:08:23And these Red Sox fans, as rabid as they are in the world, have really have something to cheer about.
- 1:08:29With the score, 2-1 going to the bottom of the fourth,
- 1:08:32Cole Jostremski led off with a long home run against the Laf Center Field screen.
- 1:08:37After the next two men went out, Reggie Smith, with a count of two strikes, and a ball, I believe it was,
- 1:08:44hit an off-speed pitch that he pulled right down the line into the right field corner.
- 1:08:49The shortest distance home run I guess you could hit. A line drive in there for a home run.
- 1:08:56And that gave the Red Sox a one run lead.
- 1:08:59And Enrico Petrocelli drilled one far over the Laf Center Field screen.
- 1:09:05And the Red Sox have scored three all on homers, and are out in front 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:09:11And Ron Willis now comes in. Nelson Browse continues to pitch out the bullpen.
- 1:09:17Willis has only had a few minutes to get ready.
- 1:09:20And the purpose of Willis is to get Howard, and then he'll pitch him for Willis in all probability
- 1:09:28in the top of the fifth, and bring in Browse, one of their starting pitchers.
- 1:09:33Well, Harry, I think that you call the turn there.
- 1:09:37Of course, Red Shandies, after the Red Sox had gone out and fought by a score of 3-2,
- 1:09:44I'm sure that Red noticed that they were having some pretty good cut, and pretty good cuts at Dick Hughes.
- 1:09:52He kept hoping he'd get the next batter out. It kind of hurt a little bit there.
- 1:09:56But Hughes didn't seem like he had as good a stuff today as he did in the second game that he pitched Harry.
- 1:10:03And in the second game, he himself said that he did have his good stuff.
- 1:10:07So Dick Hughes, after a great season, has had trouble here at Fenway Park.
- 1:10:11And now around Willis comes in. Willis is making his third appearance, all in relief.
- 1:10:25He's allowed two runs to make that four runs. Three hits. He's won four.
- 1:10:34Elston Howard will be the batter.
- 1:10:39Four to two, to favor the Red Sox.
- 1:10:46Here's the windup by Willis to Pitt. He had a cut of him in his strike one.
- 1:10:52One strike and over. The Red Sox, with a home run barrage, have hit four homers today.
- 1:11:00And lead four to two. The pitch to Howard. Swung at a curveball to miss.
- 1:11:09This is a record for a pitcher allowing three home runs in one inning.
- 1:11:15So Dick Hughes will be in the record book. He won't be happy about it, but those are the facts.
- 1:11:22First time that three home runs have been hit in one inning off a pitcher in World Series competition.
- 1:11:30Four home runs off one pitcher in a game ties the record. Here's the pitch to Howard. Bouncing ball to Shannon.
- 1:11:36He feels it. Here's the throw. In time to retire the side.
- 1:11:41What an inning the Red Sox had. Three runs on three home runs. No errors, nobody left.
- 1:11:48And at the end of the four, the score Boston for St. Louis two.
- 1:12:00You know the experts tell me that the average guy has about 15,000 whiskers on his face.
- 1:12:05And that adds up to a lot of shaving day in and day out.
- 1:12:08That's the best reason I can think of for using Gillette Foamy. No other shaving creams in its league.
- 1:12:14Gillette Foamy is as rich and thick and moist and full of lather as your beard has ever come up against.
- 1:12:21And there's a mountain of shaving comfort in every can. No wonder it's the number one choice among men.
- 1:12:27So remember, nobody makes a lather like Foamy. Nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 1:12:36Your new Technicrat razor gives a very nice shave.
- 1:12:44Crazy about not having to handle razor blades since I got your Tectonics razor.
- 1:12:53Mr. Montgomery, ladies and gentlemen, I like the light feel of your Technonic razor.
- 1:13:00The hard-pronouncing, easy-shaving Gillette Technic. Ask your face about it.
- 1:13:09We're going to the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:13:12We'll have a pinch hitter for Ron Willis, Ed Spezio out in the on-deck circle.
- 1:13:21And hey, the way these balls have been hit here today.
- 1:13:27See, there's five hits for the Red Sox, four home runs.
- 1:13:34The Cardinals have four hits. That's kind of the way I thought this series would be when it started.
- 1:13:40Everybody thought it would be a hitting series. It's turned out to be a pitching one so far up until today.
- 1:13:45And now they've broken loose. And here's Eddie Spezio coming out as a pinch hitter.
- 1:13:53Twenty-six-year-old utility infielder. Right-handed batter. His first World Series appearance.
- 1:14:04Spezio takes a fastball high. Three home runs and one inning off a pitcher, Dick Hughes, is the World Series record.
- 1:14:12Four home runs in a game off one pitcher ties a record for home runs allowed.
- 1:14:18Five home runs in one series off Hughes ties a record. Here's Spezio taking a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:14:25Lou Burnett held a record at five with the Braves in 1958. Now Hughes has tied that.
- 1:14:31Charlie Root with the Cubs and Gene Thompson with the Reds allowed four in one game.
- 1:14:39And Hughes tied that. Here's the pitch. Spezio fouls it back.
- 1:14:43And Hughes set a record allowing three home runs in one inning.
- 1:14:50Eddie Spezio leading it off. Two strikes and a ball. The sixth game of the World Series.
- 1:14:55And the Red Sox are leading four to two. If they hold that lead it means it goes to the decisive game tomorrow
- 1:15:02with Gibson pitching against Lombard. Here's the pitch on the way to Spezio.
- 1:15:09Hot shot on the ground to Foy. He's got it. Here's the fake to first base. Easy out.
- 1:15:14Spezio hitting the ball sharply but right at Foy. That's one gone and it brings up Lou Brock.
- 1:15:22He drove in his first run of the series in the third inning with his ninth hit of the series.
- 1:15:28He stole his fourth base in that inning. But the Red Sox pounce on Dick Hughes.
- 1:15:37Elston Howard's going off to talk to Wasilewski.
- 1:15:44And he's probably saying, I don't care what you throw, just keep them off base.
- 1:15:51Brock has been a standout in the series but so has Jastremski.
- 1:15:57Jastremski's two home runs gave the Red Sox the second game victory as he drove in four of the five runs they scored.
- 1:16:06And it was his home run here today that tied it up on the fourth.
- 1:16:12Here's the pitch by Wasilewski. Fastball strike over the outside corner.
- 1:16:18And Lou Brock didn't like that. Looked back at Paul Pryor.
- 1:16:23One man out, nobody on base. The ball game in the fifth. Red Sox leading four to two.
- 1:16:30Here's the pitch. Ground ball to the first baseman's got it. The pitcher covers the toss. He's out! Spectacular play!
- 1:16:52George Scott ranged forward to his right. Looked like he may have made a bad decision going after the ball that he would not be able to reach it.
- 1:17:01Whereas the second baseman Andrews you thought perhaps might get to it.
- 1:17:05But Scott made a sparkly backhand stop and perfect throw to Wasilewski who was quick covering.
- 1:17:11And Brock is retired. That brings up flood. Boy, an exciting ball game here today. Two men are out.
- 1:17:20We're in the top of the fifth. Red Sox leading four to two.
- 1:17:28Gary Wasilewski has a two-run lead. And flood had a cut at the curveball. Foul enough.
- 1:17:40The Cardinals have made four hits. Only one for extra bases at double behavior.
- 1:17:48The Red Sox have made five hits. Four of them have been homers.
- 1:17:58Kurt Flood waiting.
- 1:18:03Now the sign. Wasilewski. Built like Jim Lombard. Tall and rangy. And equally handsome.
- 1:18:15A pitch. Foul back. And he's in the hole. Strike two.
- 1:18:24Kurt Flood drove in a go-ahead run in the third. A run that gave the Cardinals a two-to-one lead.
- 1:18:33But the Red Sox with their home run barrage, a record-breaking home run barrage by the way in one inning for World Series competition, have taken the lead four to two.
- 1:18:42Two men out, nobody on base. Flood the batter. One out of two in this game.
- 1:18:50Four out of 22 in the series. Curveball outside. And the count. Two strikes and the ball.
- 1:19:01The Cardinals have hit only two home runs in the series. One by Shannon, one by Maritz.
- 1:19:17Both on their home ball bar. They haven't hit any here.
- 1:19:24Flood strikes out swinging. Kurt Flood goes down swinging. And the Cardinals go down in honor.
- 1:19:32So at the end of four and a half innings here at Fenway Park, the score Boston four, St. Louis two.
- 1:19:40It's what's up front that counts. And up front ahead of the filter.
- 1:20:00Only Winston has the good, good taste. That comes from filter blend.
- 1:20:10Filter blend means line tobacco for the best taste yet. That's why Winston is America's largest selling cigarette.
- 1:20:22Winston's out front because up front only Winston has filter blend. Choice golden tobaccos specially selected for the best taste in filter cigarettes.
- 1:20:37Winston tastes good like a cigarette should. Winston.
- 1:20:47Harry Carey and I'm Peewee Reese bringing you the sixth game of the World Series at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:20:54The score here. St. Louis Cardinals two runs on four hits, no errors.
- 1:21:01The Boston Red Sox four runs on five hits and one error. Nelson Browse is a new pitcher.
- 1:21:09He went nine innings. He won the game. He gave up two runs. He struck out four and he gave up seven hits.
- 1:21:19Nelson Browse will be the third pitcher for the Cardinals here today. And to tell you all about it, Harry Carey.
- 1:21:29All right, Peewee. Gary Wasilewski will lead it off here. I guess Nelson Browse.
- 1:21:40Thanks, Hughes, while he was in there. In three and two-thirds innings, around five hits, four runs, struck out two, walked nobody.
- 1:21:48Ron Willis pitched the final out on the fourth, so he is credited with one-third of an inning.
- 1:21:53He got nothing across and now Browse becomes the third Cardinal pitcher. The score four to two in favor of the Red Sox.
- 1:22:00Wasilewski swings and it's a high, pop foul, out of play, onto the roof in the left-field corner.
- 1:22:07One strike and no ball. Nobody on and nobody out. Bottom of the fifth. Red Sox leading by two, four to two.
- 1:22:18Ed Popowski coaching at third base, Bobby Doran first base. The pitch to Wasilewski. It hits him. Curveball hits him in the line.
- 1:22:32That was a curveball that just didn't break. And Wasilewski walks down the first baseline.
- 1:22:41So there is a fortunate development. Wasilewski isn't hurt. I don't believe he's there spraying his arm.
- 1:23:01Marty Leroux is spraying the left arm where he was hit. Wasilewski, as you know, is a right-handed pitcher.
- 1:23:08Marty Leroux, the trainer of the Red Sox, a very popular little fellow who for years was with the Boston Celtics.
- 1:23:22Joe Foil be the batter. Nelson Browse hits the first man he pitches.
- 1:23:33And here's Foil. Foil, nothing out of two. Right-handed batter. Browse's pitch. Here it is.
- 1:23:43He bumps right back to Browse. Got a play. He bubbles it. Don't have the throw to first.
- 1:23:47He had a play at second base, but juggled the ball. It's going to be a sacrifice from Browse to Javier.
- 1:23:56And that will give Mike Anders and Carl Jaskrimski a chance at driving in another run.
- 1:24:01It's four to two in favor of the Red Sox.
- 1:24:06Andrews has nothing out of two against Hughes, downing 400 in the series.
- 1:24:14That 400 average dropped now to 250, with his 0 for 2.
- 1:24:27Right-handed batter, a fine second baseman this boy. The stretch by Browse. The pitch. It's a curveball low.
- 1:24:37One ball, no strikes.
- 1:24:43Michael Andrews, born in Los Angeles. Just 24 years old. First full season with the Red Sox.
- 1:24:54The pitch by Browse. Here it is. Fastball low. Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:25:02Andrews hit 264 for the Red Sox during the regular season, with eight homers and 40 runs batted in.
- 1:25:12Here comes Javier from his second base position to talk to Browse.
- 1:25:19Four to two in favor of the Red Sox, who have put on an awesome display of home run power here today.
- 1:25:34Javier plays Andrews straight away behind second base.
- 1:25:38The pitch by Browse. Ground ball to Shannon. Holds the runner at second, throws to first.
- 1:25:43He's out. Waslowski had the whole second. Here's Yastremski.
- 1:25:52Somehow I have an idea that he's not going to get a chance to drive it around.
- 1:25:57With first base open, there is no way that Mr. Yastremski will get a chance to swing that bat.
- 1:26:04Yeah, they're going to walk him.
- 1:26:12Oh, yes, Yastremski will be intentionally passed to bring up Ken Howson.
- 1:26:19That'll put Red Sox runners at first and second with two away.
- 1:26:27Howson, of course, a long ball threat, especially in this ballpark.
- 1:26:37There would have been four of these home runs, though, I think Peewee would have been home runs anywhere, with the possible exception of Reggie Smiths, who went right down the right field line.
- 1:26:47Because there would have been home runs practically any ballpark.
- 1:26:50So here's Harrelson. Runners are at first and second.
- 1:26:55The score is four to two.
- 1:26:58The pressure now is on the Cardinals.
- 1:27:01Two days in a row, they've had a chance to clinch the series.
- 1:27:04They got beat Monday in St. Louis, and they're trailing here Wednesday in Boston.
- 1:27:11Runners at first and second, two men are out.
- 1:27:14The score, four to two, Boston, bottom of the fifth, and here's Ken Harrelson.
- 1:27:21He's 0 for 2 today.
- 1:27:26Riles off the stretch.
- 1:27:28The pitch. Swung and he fouled it back.
- 1:27:33Harrelson has made one notable change in his hitting.
- 1:27:38He's begun to hit the ball where it's pitch rather than trying to pull everything.
- 1:27:47And he feels he's made himself a better hitter by hitting outside pitches towards right field rather than trying to pull.
- 1:27:55The crowd is alive. The Red Sox are winning.
- 1:27:58Four to two on the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:28:01The stretch by Brier.
- 1:28:03The pitch to Ken Harrelson.
- 1:28:06Low and outside.
- 1:28:11It's evened up with a ball and a strike.
- 1:28:14The Red Sox are turning the World Series into the same kind of a situation as a created in the American League pennant race.
- 1:28:25More lives and nikes.
- 1:28:29An admirable ball club, the way they bounce back at you.
- 1:28:32One ball, one strike.
- 1:28:35The pitch. Swung hard and he fouled back. Strike two.
- 1:28:41I saw you wince on that cut, Peewee.
- 1:28:44I don't believe that Brier's fooled Harrelson on that pitch right there.
- 1:28:49He really had a vicious swing at it.
- 1:28:51Two strikes and the ball.
- 1:28:58Harrelson digs in.
- 1:29:08There's Brier's looking back and now fires. The pitch. Popped up.
- 1:29:13Sepeda drifting back. Javier calls for it though. In short right he has it to retire to side.
- 1:29:19Harrelson popped to Javier. No runs. No hits. No errors. Two left.
- 1:29:24And the score at the end, the five innings, Boston 4, St. Louis 2.
- 1:29:32You notice how some infielders have the uncanny knack of always being right in front of the ball.
- 1:29:36They're in position and they're on their toes and when the grounder comes they're right there to make the play.
- 1:29:41Well you know, most defensive drivers have the same ability.
- 1:29:45They know how to anticipate trouble and to be ready when it comes.
- 1:29:48When winter comes, and it won't be long now, they get set for snow and icy roads with a set of new snow tires.
- 1:29:55And the snow tires, many good drivers prefer, are B.F. Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Towns.
- 1:30:01They're built of the toughest four ply nylon cord and have the deepest biting edges you can buy.
- 1:30:06The Trailmaker tread is wide and deep. Sends you over icy roads with sure footed safety.
- 1:30:12Trailmakers are quiet too. And they won't put you into the poor house either.
- 1:30:16You can get your trailmakers for no money down.
- 1:30:19And if you want steel safety studs, your B.F.G. dealer can handle that too.
- 1:30:24So get in a position for winter right now.
- 1:30:27Get Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires from your B.F. Goodrich store or dealer.
- 1:30:35We're going to the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:30:38Harry Carey and I'm Pee-wee Reese bringing you today's game.
- 1:30:42The Boston Red Sox out in front right now, they have hit four home runs.
- 1:30:48They have four runs, five hits, and made one error.
- 1:30:52The Cardinals, they trail, they have two runs on four hits, and they've made no errors.
- 1:30:58And the first hitter is Roger Maris leading off for the Cardinals.
- 1:31:03He's had a fine series, and the couple of fellows following him, Orlando Cepeda and Tim McArthur,
- 1:31:10have not done too well, and I think that's one of the reasons the Cardinals are kind of lacking a little bit.
- 1:31:17When you get out Cepeda and McArthur, you've done quite a job.
- 1:31:21Harry?
- 1:31:22Okay, it will be Maris leading it off.
- 1:31:24He's had one out of two in this game, seven out of 21 in the series, which is a 333 mark.
- 1:31:30He leads and runs about at in with six, so he has done his bit.
- 1:31:35Had a fine season for the Cardinals, much better than the figures would indicate.
- 1:31:42Nine homers, 55 runs batted in, hit 261, but he won many a ballgame for the Redbirds.
- 1:31:50Now he leads off to six at Wasilewski's first pitch.
- 1:31:55It's high and outside. Wasilewski is tall and ranging.
- 1:31:59Wheels the ball, sidearm, into the left-handed batters.
- 1:32:07Now Fitz Damaris, boy that one had something on it, but the wild one goes back to the screen.
- 1:32:14Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:32:18Wasilewski, like all the other young Red Sox who have never been in the World Series,
- 1:32:23impress you with their poise under fire.
- 1:32:31Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:32:33Here's a fellow whose name is not even on the World Series program here.
- 1:32:38The pitch, outside, ball three.
- 1:32:42Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:32:44He hasn't walked anybody yet, and no Red Sox was walked except Yastremski intentionally.
- 1:32:53Now the three-nothing pitch, way outside. He walked him, and here comes Cepeda.
- 1:32:59And you keep wondering how long they'll be able to stop. Cha-cha.
- 1:33:03Here comes Dick Williams out of the Red Sox.
- 1:33:06Dugout, he's coming out slowly for you to give him.
- 1:33:09Looks like John Wyatt out there.
- 1:33:11Yeah, I saw Sal Magley, the pitching coach for the Red Sox, get up in the dugout over there,
- 1:33:17and he gave the indication, like a big round man, that meant John Wyatt.
- 1:33:22They always have some kind of a little signal for each pitcher in the bullpen.
- 1:33:26John Wyatt throws pretty hard. He has kind of a sinking ball.
- 1:33:32It's called a Vaseline or some kind of a pitch. That's a sinker we'll call it, Harry.
- 1:33:37Dick Williams went out to talk to Wazlowski, probably to give John Wyatt a little bit more time to warm up.
- 1:33:46Cepeda comes up. He fouled out to the third baseman, and he bounced out to the third baseman,
- 1:33:50and never had a good cut either time.
- 1:33:53A runner at first and nobody up.
- 1:33:56The Cardinals trailing by two runs, four and a two.
- 1:33:59Cepeda, who's had two out of 21 in the series, the pitch.
- 1:34:03Swinton's trying to go to right field, and he fouls it back. One strike and no ball.
- 1:34:09The last time Orlando was in the World Series was with the San Francisco Jerbs.
- 1:34:13He had three out of 19 that time, so the opposition in the series has you so thoroughly scouted,
- 1:34:20and they really pinpoint the key men in a batting order.
- 1:34:29Maris at first base, nobody up.
- 1:34:33Maris, a good baserunner, was stretched by Wazlowski.
- 1:34:38The pitch to Cepeda. Swinton again trying to hit the right and fouled it out.
- 1:34:42He had a good cut, but he's in the hole now, two strikes and nothing. McClarker will be up there next.
- 1:34:48We're on the top of the sixth. Red Sox lead four to two.
- 1:34:54As they really flex their muscles today with four home runs.
- 1:34:59Petrocelli has hit two of them. Reggie Smith and Karla Stremski hit the others.
- 1:35:06The Cardinals got their two runs in the third.
- 1:35:12The pitch to Cepeda, high and inside. Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:35:19The Cardinals got their runs after two are out after a leadoff double by Javier on successive singles by Brock, Flood, and Maris.
- 1:35:29Cepeda has changed bats. Two strikes and a ball. The runner at first base is Maris.
- 1:35:36Gary Wazlowski has just walked his first man.
- 1:35:41Out of pitch, instead over to first, the runner is back.
- 1:35:45Wazlowski is playing four. Walk one. He permitted four hits all in the third inning.
- 1:35:53Four to two, the Red Sox out in front. Top of the sixth.
- 1:35:59Wazlowski delivers. Inside again, ball two.
- 1:36:05And the count evens. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:09It looks like that Cepeda has not been fooled on any pitches. He just can't seem to make contact.
- 1:36:15Now, Orlando, he didn't just happen to get in a slump in the series. He was in a slump at the end of the season.
- 1:36:20He went 10 for 62. He only batted 161 in the late season.
- 1:36:25Two balls, two strikes. The pitch to Cepeda.
- 1:36:31Top five. Short right field. Carlson coming in. Waiting for the ball. He's got it.
- 1:36:39Wild up, driving it over his head with one hand as the wind carried it a little more than he thought.
- 1:36:45So here is McCarver now. On this kind of a day, McCarver is a home run threat with the wind blowing towards right field.
- 1:36:55He hit 14 during the regular season, which was his career high.
- 1:36:59He, like Cepeda, is at trouble in the series. McCarver is two out of 18. Cepeda is two out of 21.
- 1:37:09Make that two out of 22 now.
- 1:37:15McCarver left-handed batter. Marist the runner at first.
- 1:37:20Wazlowski's pitch. Way outside. One ball, no strikes.
- 1:37:25Wazlowski's been moving that ball around. Has a good sinking fastball.
- 1:37:34And he has himself a two-run lead as John Wyatt is still working in the bullpen for the Red Sox.
- 1:37:45Time is called. Wazlowski regains his position on the rubber.
- 1:37:51Mike Shannon will be the next cardinal batter.
- 1:37:55The pitch to McCarver. Here it is. Outside, ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:38:05Wazlowski, just watching him work, he would think he'd be far more effective against the right-handed hitter than the left-handed hitter,
- 1:38:14because he's wheeling the ball into the left-hand hitter.
- 1:38:17However, his sinker dips away. Rock has had one hit off him. Marist has had one.
- 1:38:26So the left-hand hitters have had half the hits.
- 1:38:31Now the stretch. The pitch. High ball three.
- 1:38:37Three balls, no strikes on Tim McCarver. Mike Shannon will be coming up next.
- 1:38:44The score, four to two Red Sox.
- 1:38:49We're on the top of the sixth.
- 1:38:53The three-nothing pitch.
- 1:38:57Way wide, he walked him. That's two walks in this inning, issued by Wazlowski.
- 1:39:04So the Cardinals have tying runners on at first and second, with one out, trailing four to two.
- 1:39:10And Mike Shannon, who has hit one homer in this series, that in St. Louis, steps up to the plate.
- 1:39:18No Cardinal has hit a homer on at Fenway Park yet.
- 1:39:26A bright, sunshiny day. Boy, an artist couldn't draw a prettier picture than this day makes.
- 1:39:34The sky, a blanket of azure blue, fleeced here and there with little white powder puff clouds.
- 1:39:41The ballpark jam-packed, and the home team is leading.
- 1:39:47So far it's a perfect picture in Boston.
- 1:39:51Len Dillon, our director here, doesn't like to hear me wax poetic.
- 1:39:57You described it perfectly, Harry.
- 1:39:59Atta boy, Peewee, you're my pal. Runners at first and second, one out.
- 1:40:05Shannon, nothing out of two so far. Hit the ball on the ground both times.
- 1:40:12Fastball sinks low and outside. Here comes Dick Williams out of the hardsocks, dug out.
- 1:40:19And he's walking. He wants a new pitcher. He's already motioned to the bullpen.
- 1:40:24So Gary Wasilewski leaves the game, but with his team out in front.
- 1:40:31And John Wyatt, the bullpen ace, or the Boston Red Sox, will be replacing him.
- 1:40:38The spectators are already rising here. They're going to give Wasilewski a standing ovation.
- 1:40:43He pitched five in the third inning.
- 1:40:47And I believe this was the plan of manager Dick Williams.
- 1:40:52I think he heard him observe that if he gets five, six, or seven good innings out of Wasilewski in this game,
- 1:40:59with his team still in the contest or ahead, he'd be very, very happy.
- 1:41:04And that's what he's got. His team's out in front four to two.
- 1:41:07Wasilewski has pitched five in the third inning.
- 1:41:11And the Red Sox are in a position to win this game if Wyatt can hold the card.
- 1:41:18And that's exactly what Dick Williams said, and I heard Gary Wasilewski say the same thing.
- 1:41:24Williams would start him and for him to go as long as he could and keep throwing just as hard as he could
- 1:41:31and hope to get five or six innings out of him.
- 1:41:34Wasilewski still had good stuff. He just got, I believe he's a little tired, and he got a little wow.
- 1:41:40He had not walked a man until the sixth inning. He's now getting a standing ovation.
- 1:41:45Well, that must be sweet music to a young man's ears after spending eight long years in the minor leagues
- 1:42:04and suddenly finding himself projected into the spotlight at this sixth game of the World Series
- 1:42:12presented.
- 1:42:16And now it's up to John Wyatt.
- 1:42:21Wyatt is appearing for the second time.
- 1:42:27He had no decision. He pitched only two innings, set the Cardinals down, walked two,
- 1:42:33fan one, allowed no hits. Veteran right-hander John Wyatt comes in.
- 1:42:50Mike Shannon.
- 1:42:58Wyatt is inheriting in one ball count.
- 1:43:05Wyatt was with Kansas City for about six years or so, traded the Red Sox along with Roland Sheldon
- 1:43:16and outfielder Jose Tarnable. The pitch to Shannon popped up.
- 1:43:22On the infield is Pup Vaselli. Infield fly rolled in effect, he makes the catch anyhow.
- 1:43:28Shannon on the first pitch popped to Pup Vaselli.
- 1:43:33Wyatt, one-nine, lost six with an earned run average of 2.50. He's 32 years old.
- 1:43:40You know, these Red Sox have made some key deals, and their general manager, Dick O'Connell, deserves a lot of credit.
- 1:43:48Tarnable Wyatt, their ace in the bullpen, and they also have Tarnable,
- 1:43:57who has helped them this year, started several games in this series.
- 1:44:03They picked up Harrelson. It wasn't a trade. Invested a little money in this pay-off.
- 1:44:12Here's Javier with runners at first and second and two out.
- 1:44:17Right-hander, stockily built. The pitch is low on outside. Boy, he really wheels from the side.
- 1:44:32Wyatt, a six-footer, weighs 200 pounds, 32 years old.
- 1:44:42Waslowski would be the winner if Wyatt holds the Cardinals at this point for the rest of the game.
- 1:44:48Waslowski has pitched the necessary five innings for a starter. Here's the pitch.
- 1:44:54Bang! Slider hit the outside corner, and boy, he throws hard.
- 1:44:59And I would imagine he's good and strong. He's only worked two innings in this series, which now is a week old.
- 1:45:11One ball, one strike, two men are out. Top of the sixth. Red Sox out in front, four to two.
- 1:45:20Javier waiting. He's at one out of two. And a pitch. One and a strike, two.
- 1:45:28Wyatt has a peculiar spin of his body, which I would imagine would add to the distraction of the hitter who hasn't seen him often.
- 1:45:39He sort of spins as if he's going to throw to second base before he delivers. Maris is at second base.
- 1:45:47McCarver is at first base. Two men are out. Javier on the hole, two strikes and a ball.
- 1:45:57Cardinals trailing by two runs.
- 1:46:04There's a glance at second. The pitch. High pop ball back and out of play. Into the stands.
- 1:46:14And the count stays the same. On that pitch, which again was to the outside part of the plate,
- 1:46:19Javier tried to go with him towards the opposite field.
- 1:46:25Harrelson plays Javier way around towards center field.
- 1:46:33Two strikes and a ball. Wyatt got Shannon on the first pitch.
- 1:46:40Javier leaning forward. Now gets into the batter's box.
- 1:46:47Wants to make sure he gets time to get ready. Now Wyatt has his sign from Elston Howard.
- 1:46:55Two strikes and a ball. The pitch. Oops! Barely missed with it.
- 1:47:04And that evens it at two balls, two strikes. Who do you think this crowd's pulling for here today?
- 1:47:10They groan every time it's a ball, and they roar every time it's a strike or a red sox hit.
- 1:47:17And why not? That's the way it should be.
- 1:47:21This is their ball club here. Two balls, two strikes. And what a year this ball team has provided for these fans.
- 1:47:30Two-two pitch. Here it is. Ground ball towards short. Cut off by Foy. The throw is to first.
- 1:47:39How is that a close play? A wild argument. How the air is all over the first base up by John Stevens.
- 1:47:47He thought he had it beaten. Foy had a little trouble getting the ball out of his glove.
- 1:47:52He wanted to throw to second and first realize he didn't have a play.
- 1:47:56How the air did everything but beat it, but he's out on a close play.
- 1:48:00No runs. No hits. No errors. Two left. And at the end, the five and a half innings.
- 1:48:06The score is still Boston 4, St. Louis 2.
- 1:48:19Now Pocahontas said, Dear Daddy, I'm off to see the Dodge Boy Sprint.
- 1:48:26My captain's gotta have a charger, or I think he's gonna lose his head.
- 1:48:32He got the fever, Dodge fever. With just one look at a shape he'd never seen.
- 1:48:41Fever! From the charger, the one they call the clean machine.
- 1:48:47He got the fever, Dodge fever. He got the fever, Dodge fever!
- 1:48:5668 charger. A great new shape. A sports car feel. And a price that's been reduced this year by more than $100.
- 1:49:05It's easy to see why charger has the highest sales increase in America.
- 1:49:10Check it out at your Dodge dealers today.
- 1:49:15Red Shandies has been out discussing heatedly with first base umpire John Stevens the play that ended the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:49:27Red now has just returned to the Cardinal dugout.
- 1:49:31You know, in a World Series Pee-wee, I guess at the honor of the Commissioner, there's not too much heat shown so far as arguing with an umpire.
- 1:49:43And I think this is the most reaction I've yet witnessed. I believe it is, Harry.
- 1:49:50Boy, cut over and had a hold on the ball, made a good play. He looked like he was going to second.
- 1:49:55He looked up and saw McHarvey had the play, beat at second base, and took that little extra time to go to first base.
- 1:50:01And I will say it was close.
- 1:50:04Here's George Scott to lead it off against Nelson Browns.
- 1:50:08Bottom of the sixth, first pitch, one foul back, strike one. One strike and no ball.
- 1:50:13Nobody on and nobody out. Bottom of the sixth. The Red Sox out in front, 4-2 in a pressure ball game.
- 1:50:21Because if they don't win, the World Series is over.
- 1:50:24If they win this game, they have Lombard to go tomorrow.
- 1:50:27Here's a carbon there, a strike call.
- 1:50:31Two strikes and no ball.
- 1:50:33George Scott, nothing out of two in this game.
- 1:50:39Four out of 20 in the series.
- 1:50:43Time is called as Javier adjusts his sunglasses.
- 1:50:48Bright sunshine here.
- 1:50:53Now Browns gets ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:56Bouncing ball back to Miles. He's got it. Throws over to first and fouls.
- 1:51:02Browns, you know, has a pitching motion that throws him off the mound towards first base.
- 1:51:07And many balls hit softly up the middle trick or throw for hits.
- 1:51:12And that one almost did too, but he stabbed it back at it and turned completely around in throwing out George Scott.
- 1:51:20Reggie Smith, who hit the homer that put the Red Sox into the lead of the fourth, steps up there.
- 1:51:29His second home run of the World Series, by the way.
- 1:51:33Brown ball to the second baseman. Big hop to Javier. Flips over to Sepeda and there's two away.
- 1:51:41Go up, two down. And yes, Petra Selli, who has hit home runs on successive times at bat.
- 1:51:57They outfield Shades, Petra Selli towards left field.
- 1:52:02He's had three hits in this series. All have been against Hughes.
- 1:52:08Swings and foul tips the first bit. He has driven in three runs in this series all against Hughes.
- 1:52:16So imagine one pitcher that Rico Petra Selli will send a Christmas card this year.
- 1:52:22Well, they do. The Cardinal, right-hander, who won the most games of any pitcher on the Cardinal staff, by the way, this year, 16.
- 1:52:35Jack LeMabe is limbering up on the bullpen for the Cardinals.
- 1:52:40Swung on, popped up. Javier glitzes down, moves the ball to the side, but Maras comes in to help him out and makes the catch.
- 1:52:49Petra Selli pops to Maras and shot right, who realize that Javier had lost the ball in the sun and came in.
- 1:52:56One, two, three, nothing across. The score at the end of six innings. Boston, four, St. Louis, two.
- 1:53:03Now we're happy to present the worst person of the week. Our scouts have made their selection of worst person and your name is?
- 1:53:09I'd rather not give it, you know, the awful things I've done.
- 1:53:12Okay. Now you are a family man. Did your wife know how awful you were when you got married?
- 1:53:17I was so inking of it when I refused to say I do at three different wedding ceremonies.
- 1:53:21That's terrible. What are some of the latest dreadful things you've been doing?
- 1:53:24Going to a department store wearing a carnation looking like a floor walker. People ask me directions, I send them to the wrong floor.
- 1:53:30Despicable.
- 1:53:31I like to drive on the turnpike in weekend traffic and purposely run out of gas in the middle lane. Then I get out of the car and just shrug a lot.
- 1:53:37I've seen you.
- 1:53:38The worst thing I do is to my own family. I hide the can of right guard just when they're all getting ready for a big night out.
- 1:53:44They all share the right guard?
- 1:53:46Well that's the beauty part of it. It's a spray, see? And they all use it. So I don't leave just one or two defenseless. I leave them all six defenseless.
- 1:53:55You certainly are the worst person of the week.
- 1:53:57Thank you. And another horrible thing I do is leave myself defenseless.
- 1:54:00I know that.
- 1:54:02Top half of seventh inning. St. Louis Cardinals two runs on four hits. The Boston Red Sox four runs on five hits.
- 1:54:08Down match will be the first hitter. We have a new right fielder, Jose Tardibol.
- 1:54:13Harry, all right, Pee-wee. Maxville is nothing out of two in this game. Two out of 14 in this series.
- 1:54:19Tardibol has just been announced in right field as a defensive move by manager Dick Williams.
- 1:54:29Orange Isle is present in the National League with Fred Flagg right below us. Here's a pitch swung on.
- 1:54:35High five all the center will be an easy out. Reggie Smith is there and he has it.
- 1:54:40Maxville for the second time flies deep to center field. That's one away.
- 1:54:47And now Bobby Tolan is going to bat for Nelson Brown.
- 1:54:53Brown's pitched two scoreless innings. Didn't allow any hits. Walk one intentionally and hit one.
- 1:55:05Bobby Tolan batting for Nelson Brown as the Cardinals trail by two here in the seventh.
- 1:55:17Wyatt's pitches a fastball low and outside. Tolan making his third appearance in a World Series game.
- 1:55:24All this year, of course, he's hitless.
- 1:55:27Now the pitch and it's a curve inside. Ball two. Blue Brock will be next.
- 1:55:46Dick Hughes, who was beaten five to nothing by Jim Lomborg in the second game of the series, is the pitcher of records so far today.
- 1:55:54Here's a pitch. Ball three low and outside. Bobby Tolan leading off batting here with one out batting for the pitcher Nelson Brown.
- 1:56:04Blue Brock would be next. Joe Schultz coaching at third. Dick Sissler at first for the Cardinals.
- 1:56:12Thirty-two-year-old veteran right-hander John Wynne looks down. The three-nothing pitch.
- 1:56:21He walked him ball four on four pitches. So here's Brock coming up with a runner at first and one out.
- 1:56:32The outfield shifts around towards left field for Brock.
- 1:56:38Elston Howard. What an acquisition that was by the Red Sox.
- 1:56:44His experience on Savoir Fair.
- 1:56:52Many a World Series with the Yankees is certainly doing their young pitching staff a great deal of good in this World Series.
- 1:57:01Gary Bell has started to warm up now for the Red Sox. Rock left-handed batter. The stretch. The pitch.
- 1:57:08High fly ball. Deep right center. Way back. It might be out of here. It could be. It is a home run.
- 1:57:16What a tremendous poke. High into the right center field stand.
- 1:57:25And the horn you hear is from down in Gussie Bush's box. It was about the only Cardinal fans here.
- 1:57:33The Cardinal owner and his family down there. And Lil Brock with a tremendous home run has tied this game up at 4-4.
- 1:57:44There's his tenth hit of the series. Each team now has had four runs and five hits.
- 1:57:51He has flung the pitch. Curveball inside. He's spun out of the way.
- 1:57:59Rod now has driven in three runs, has scored seven. He's had ten hits.
- 1:58:08Wyatt's pitch. Low fastball outside.
- 1:58:15Here comes Dick Williams out. This was the Cardinal's first home run of the World Series in Fenway Park.
- 1:58:22And that, Pee-wee, like I said about several of the Red Sox homers, would have been one in any ballpark in the world.
- 1:58:30Hey, Lil Brock, the more I see of him, the more he amazes me. He's not a big man. Of course he's not too small.
- 1:58:39He must be around 5'11". 175, 180 pounds. With all this tremendous speed that he has, he hit that ball in left center field.
- 1:58:50And right center field. Must have been 40 rolls. Of course the wind helped it a little bit, but he does have tremendous power.
- 1:58:59That he does. Here's the pitch to Flood. Strike called at the knee.
- 1:59:04Brock, as a leadoff man for the Cardinals during a regular season, hit 21 home runs.
- 1:59:11It's rare indeed when a leadoff man has that kind of home run power.
- 1:59:21Game tied, 4-4. Here's the pitch to Flood.
- 1:59:25Sliced foul out of play. Off to the right and the count is in. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:59:33Now both starting pitchers are off the hook. Gary Wasilewski no longer can be the winner of this game.
- 1:59:41And Dick Hughes can no longer be the loser.
- 1:59:46We've had five home runs in this game. Four by the red side.
- 1:59:50Here's the pitch. All three is low on inside.
- 1:59:56Three balls, two strikes. Roger Maras will be next.
- 2:00:00John Wyatt, who got out of a jam in the sixth, has gotten into his own trouble here in the seventh.
- 2:00:07On a walk to Tolan and a tremendous home run by Lou Brock.
- 2:00:13Out of the pitch. Here it is.
- 2:00:16Low pub fly, short center field. Reggie Smith almost falls down, but he makes the catch.
- 2:00:22Run flies to Smith, who was he was running in. Almost slipped and fell, but caught the ball for the second out.
- 2:00:30And here's Roger Maras.
- 2:00:34We're tied 4-4 here on the top of the seventh.
- 2:00:40The Red Sox have Gary Bell working in the bullpen, which would indicate they will pinch it for Wyatt in their seventh.
- 2:00:49Wyatt will be the second batter coming up.
- 2:00:55Here's Maras and Wyatt's pitch.
- 2:00:59He was really pulling on that one, but bounces it foul into the Red Sox dugout behind first base.
- 2:01:05Maras has had one homer that off the longboard in St. Louis Monday with two out on the ninth,
- 2:01:13preventing longboard from registering his second straight shutout.
- 2:01:19Although he did get his second straight victory.
- 2:01:25The wind up on Wyatt for fifth. Popped up.
- 2:01:29Low center field. Gaskremski coming over and Reggie Smith.
- 2:01:33Smith takes it. Maras flies to Smith.
- 2:01:37Two runs, one hit. No errors and nobody left.
- 2:01:42And at the end of six and a half innings, it's all tied up. St. Louis 4, Boston 4.
- 2:01:50Hi, honey. I'm home.
- 2:01:52Hi. I'm upstairs. I'll be down in a minute.
- 2:01:55Okay.
- 2:01:56Have a good day?
- 2:01:57Oh, yeah. Horrible.
- 2:01:59Yeah. Lost your job again, huh?
- 2:02:01Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:02I bought some new super king-size Winston cigarettes today. They're on the table in the hall.
- 2:02:07In the golden red pack?
- 2:02:08That's right. Great taste.
- 2:02:10It's not how long you make it. It's how you make it long.
- 2:02:13Mmm. Took our son to the dentist today.
- 2:02:15What happened?
- 2:02:16Mmm. Twenty new cavities.
- 2:02:18Ouch. Why we?
- 2:02:20Mmm.
- 2:02:21Well, I can't find the money.
- 2:02:23Oh, listen, John. Maybe they're in the table on the other side of the living room.
- 2:02:28What's the table doing over there? What'd you do, rearrange the furniture again?
- 2:02:32No, John. I always keep the table over there.
- 2:02:35John? Cynthia?
- 2:02:38Mr. Frederick, are you in the wrong house again?
- 2:02:42Tastes good.
- 2:02:43Tastes good.
- 2:02:44It should.
- 2:02:45It should.
- 2:02:46It's winning style.
- 2:02:49Jack LeMay will be the new Cardinal pitcher, and so let's pause here 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:02:57There's more to a World Series than the meeting of two great teams, just as there's more to a white owl than just smoke.
- 2:03:05Take that white owl ranger. Stands tall in the box, slim and trim.
- 2:03:11The ranger delivers mildness. But there's even more than that to a white owl ranger.
- 2:03:16But we'll let you discover that for yourself.
- 2:03:19Then you'll know why we say you get a lot more from a white owl than just smoke.
- 2:03:27KMOX, KMOX FM, St. Louis.
- 2:03:31With Pee Wee Reese, this is Harry Carrey at Fenway Park, Boston.
- 2:03:35This game is tied up 4-4, and what a seesaw we've had here today.
- 2:03:40The Red Sox on Pettigaselli's homer took a 1-0 lead in the second.
- 2:03:44The Cardinals came back with 2 in the third to lead 2-1.
- 2:03:48The Red Sox went home run crazy in the fourth with three home runs to take a 4-2 lead,
- 2:03:55and then Lubelock at a home run with a man on in the Cardinal's seventh to tie it.
- 2:04:00Jack LeMabe, who for two years was a member of the Red Sox, makes his home in Springfield, Massachusetts.
- 2:04:1031-year-old right-hander. He won three, lost seven during the regular season.
- 2:04:15He's making his third appearance of this series, and the first man he'll face will be Elston Howard.
- 2:04:23John Wyatt kneeling in the on-back circle.
- 2:04:28So, maybe he's going to hit for himself. Here's the pitch to Howard, and it's a curveball outside.
- 2:04:34Elston Howard has had nothing out of two in this game. Two out of 14 in this series.
- 2:04:42Ball game in the bottom of the seventh. Tied up 4-4.
- 2:04:50Howard swings and fouls one into the stand. That evens it up. A ball and a strike.
- 2:04:57Boy, it's been an exciting wall series, as the amazing Red Sox have pushed the Cardinals right to the limit.
- 2:05:14Right-handed batter, Elston Howard waits. One ball, one strike. LeMabe's pitch.
- 2:05:21Strike two called a fast ball. He had some mustard on that one, and the count, two strikes and a ball.
- 2:05:30John Wyatt. Do it or be next. Cardinals have used four pitchers now.
- 2:05:38The Red Sox, two. Howard steps out of the batter's box.
- 2:05:46He's in the hole, two strikes and a ball.
- 2:05:51The pitch. Curveball missed with an outside. And that evens it two balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:59Howard was unhappy when he left the Yankees, but things turned out like roses for him.
- 2:06:08Here he is in another world series. A pitch, foul back.
- 2:06:14He was in nine of them with the Yankees.
- 2:06:19He's had five home runs in world series play, and has hit 261.
- 2:06:28The first time he ever bounded in a world series was against Don Newcomb.
- 2:06:32Yankees stayed in, and he homered his first time at bat.
- 2:06:37Two strikes, two balls, a pitch. Bouncing ball on might be tough play for somebody.
- 2:06:42Here's Shannon throwing. In time, he almost collided with Maxville.
- 2:06:47Boy, that was a slow dribbler, passed the mound, rolling toward shark.
- 2:06:51Shannon and Maxville were both sprinting for the ball.
- 2:06:54Shannon got there first, and still running, fired to Cepeda for the out.
- 2:07:00And now we're going to have a pinch hitter coming out. Looks like Dalton Jones.
- 2:07:08Dalton Jones, who has hit well in this series.
- 2:07:15He's batted.353 with six hits. Dalton Jones will be the batter.
- 2:07:21So we'll have a new Red Sox pitcher coming out in the eighth.
- 2:07:26Cepeda comes in to talk to Jack LeMay. One out, nobody on.
- 2:07:31The game tied. Jones had three homeless.25 runs batted in, hit.289 during the regular season.
- 2:07:43A line drive hitter who hits the ball to all fields.
- 2:07:49Here's the pitch by LeMay. Fastball outside.
- 2:07:53And Jones wants the umpire to look at the baseball. He does and tosses in a new one.
- 2:08:05The sun has gone into hiding at the moment.
- 2:08:10The pitch to Dalton Jones had a good cut, and he fouled that.
- 2:08:16One ball, one strike.
- 2:08:21Boy, after a 162-game schedule, this might wind up with only one game deciding the championship.
- 2:08:31Should the Red Sox win this one today, that's what the situation would be tomorrow.
- 2:08:35The pitch to Jones, high outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 2:08:43Joe Harner is working in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 2:08:49A left-hander who is touched for a two-man homer by Yostremski in the second game of the series.
- 2:08:59Here's the pitch. Line drive base hit right field. Dalton Jones single strike.
- 2:09:05And the Red Sox have the lead run on at first base with one away as Joe Foy comes out.
- 2:09:18That home run that Yostremski hit in the seventh inning of the second game was with two on and three run homer off Joe Harner.
- 2:09:27Here's Foy. Nothing out of two in this game.
- 2:09:33One out of ten in the series. Hit 16 homers during the regular season.
- 2:09:39We're in the bottom of the seventh. No pitch by LeMay. Low outside.
- 2:09:46One ball, no strikes. Dalton Jones delivered his seventh hit of the series.
- 2:09:54A line single to the right.
- 2:10:00Out of pitch. Line drive left field block coming over. Leakes can't get him off the wall.
- 2:10:06Here's Jones got a chance to score. He's around third. His block's flowing.
- 2:10:11Tours the plate. And safe. Foy winds up at third base.
- 2:10:24Loughbrock gambled on the line drive off of that Foy as he raced to his right.
- 2:10:30Leaked behind to the air. When he failed to make the catch he was in no position for the rebound.
- 2:10:37The ball bounced toward center. He had to recover it. He's got a great arm and he threw strongly back towards the plate.
- 2:10:45But it was too far up the line.
- 2:10:56Let's see if we get a credit Foy with a double or triple. He is driven in a run that puts the Red Sox into the lead.
- 2:11:05And that's going to be all here for all of the main.
- 2:11:10It's a double for Foy driving in a run that gives the Red Sox a five to four lead.
- 2:11:20With Mike Andrews, double for Foy driving in a run that gives the Red Sox a five to four lead.
- 2:11:31With Mike Andrews going to be the hitter. We have Ray Washburn out on the bullpen along with Joe Harner.
- 2:11:43I believe it's going to be a Harner.
- 2:11:55On the double by Foy they give Brock an air on the throw. I thought perhaps he was headed for third base to take that base anyhow.
- 2:12:05So Brock will get an air on that throw which was a strong throw but up the line towards first base from home plate.
- 2:12:19When you play daringly there are some times you're going to fail. And Lou Brock has been a sensation in the series.
- 2:12:27Play that one daringly as he raced over trying to make the catch rather than concede the hit off the wall.
- 2:12:34And us, as a result of failing, let's pause here 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:12:42High fly ball, deep right field, into the corner Bobby Tolan.
- 2:12:48He's got it! The Cardinals win the pennant! The Cardinals win the pennant!
- 2:12:53Holy cow that was a night I'll never forget. The Redbirds clinched the pennant.
- 2:12:58Best in the National League. And for the best popular price beer in America, clinch a cold glass of Bush.
- 2:13:05Bush delivers all the satisfaction a cold glass of beer can give you. Bush, best popular price beer in America.
- 2:13:15Moex Kmoex FM St. Louis.
- 2:13:18Harry Carrey and Pee Wee Reese in an exciting ball game which finds the Red Sox now see-sawing back to the lead.
- 2:13:26With one out Dalton Jones, a pinch hitter, lined to single right.
- 2:13:31Joe Foy in a line drive towards the Green Monster, the scoreboard in left field.
- 2:13:38Blue Brock racing at breakneck speed, leaf time to the air, couldn't reach the ball.
- 2:13:45His momentum carried him away and it required him some time to recover.
- 2:13:50Upon recovering the ball he fired towards the plate.
- 2:13:53But Foy was safe and the throw got away, rather Jones was safe and when the throw got away Foy advanced to third.
- 2:14:00Now Joe Horner comes in.
- 2:14:04The Red Sox have had seven hits. Four of them have been homers and another one's been a double.
- 2:14:11The infield comes in for the Cardinals.
- 2:14:14With a play of the plate.
- 2:14:18There's only one out.
- 2:14:27Mike Andrews is headless in this game. Horner gets ready.
- 2:14:31Here's the pitch. Strike called a fastball.
- 2:14:35One strike and no ball. Maras plays a reasonably short right field against Andrews.
- 2:14:55Joe Horner getting ready.
- 2:14:58Here's the pitch inside a fastball.
- 2:15:02And the count is even at a ball and a strike.
- 2:15:08Foy represents an insurance run as the Red Sox already lead five to four.
- 2:15:18Infield on the grass for the play of the plate.
- 2:15:21Joe Horner a softball. Here's the pitch.
- 2:15:24Foul out of play. Strike two.
- 2:15:27Now we wondered when this wall would finally have some effect on a game.
- 2:15:31I think this double by Foy was certainly one such instance because of the sharpness of the wall.
- 2:15:42The left fielder always plays over towards center.
- 2:15:46In a regular or a longer left field that ball as hard as it was hit would probably have been caught.
- 2:15:52Two strikes and a ball. The pitch.
- 2:15:55Line base hit. Left field.
- 2:16:00Andrews drives in the sixth flat to the Red Sox. They have a two-run lead.
- 2:16:24Here's Carl Yastremski now. Six to four in favor of the Red Sox.
- 2:16:29Yastremski homered in the fourth off Hughes.
- 2:16:32Here's Horner's pitch.
- 2:16:34Ground ball headed for right field. Base hit.
- 2:16:36Here's Andrews around second. Racing for third. He'll make it.
- 2:16:42Yastremski singles to right. Andrews going to third.
- 2:16:49Ball you never know about a World Series.
- 2:16:53The Cardinals' biggest hitter during the season, Orlando Cepeda, has been completely stopped in this series.
- 2:17:01The Cardinals' biggest winner during the regular season, Dick Hughes, has been knocked out twice.
- 2:17:06And the Cardinals' finest relief pitcher all year long, Joe Horner, hasn't been able to get anybody out.
- 2:17:13And here comes Red Shandy.
- 2:17:17And that's going to be all for Horner.
- 2:17:23Jose Tartabal will be the batter.
- 2:17:33Let's see, they have Larry Jaster down in the bullpen along with Ray Washburn.
- 2:17:40Jaster being a left-hander, Washburn a right-hander.
- 2:17:48Well, this has been a hitter's day, Pee-wee.
- 2:17:51Well, as we talked about before this game started, Harry, both of these ball clubs have a good hitting ball club.
- 2:17:59They have good power.
- 2:18:01I don't think either one of them has really shown it in the previous five games.
- 2:18:08But here in the sixth game, it seems like they've gotten those bats a little unshackled a little bit,
- 2:18:14and they're kind of racking these pitchers around.
- 2:18:18Of course, if you mention two of the fellows that have not hit here in the sixth game,
- 2:18:25it's hurt the Cardinals so much, Cepeda and McHarvey, and Kurt Flood hasn't hit too well either.
- 2:18:31The Yastrowski's had a great series, and we've seen some real strong hitting here today.
- 2:18:39In the setting, with one out, Dalton Jones a pinch hitter single.
- 2:18:44Floyd doubled off the left field wall, scoring Jones, and when Brock's throw to the plate was wide,
- 2:18:50Floyd took third.
- 2:18:52That was all for Jack Linae who started this inning.
- 2:18:56And then Joe Harner came in.
- 2:18:58The first man he faced, Mike Andrews, a right-handed batter, singled in Floyd to make it 6-4.
- 2:19:05The second batter he faced, Carl Dostremski, a left-handed batter, single right, sending Andrews the third.
- 2:19:11And now Larry Jastr becomes the Cardinals' sixth pitcher.
- 2:19:24The score, 6-4.
- 2:19:26Jerry Adair is going to bat here for Jose Tarnable.
- 2:19:30Adair being a right-handed batter.
- 2:19:38This ballgame started on a hitting note when with two out in the second inning off the starting pitcher,
- 2:19:44Dick Hughes, Rico Petrocelli-Homer.
- 2:19:47They gave the Cardinals and the Red Sox a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.
- 2:19:51But then in the third, a double by Adair and base hits by Brock, Floyd, and Maris enabled the Cardinals to tie it to go ahead 2-1.
- 2:20:00Then in the fourth inning, also off the start of Hughes, Yastremski, Reggie Smith, and Petrocelli all hit home runs to establish a World Series record
- 2:20:10for home runs in one inning off one pitcher.
- 2:20:12That gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.
- 2:20:16Then in the seventh inning, with a man on, Lou Brock-Homer to tie it up at 4-4.
- 2:20:25And here the Red Sox have taken the lead in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:20:30Jerry Adair with runners at first and third.
- 2:20:35Adair in this series is hitting 125 with two out of 16.
- 2:20:42So the Red Sox have used three men in the cleanup position.
- 2:20:53Harrelson who started, Tardyball for whom Adair is pinch hitting.
- 2:20:59Adair hit 273 during the regular season.
- 2:21:08The pitch is a fastball low.
- 2:21:10The Cardinal infield is playing half way.
- 2:21:14Around short and second with one out, runners at first and third.
- 2:21:19They want to get the double play if they can.
- 2:21:22Adair from Tulsa.
- 2:21:25Former basketball star at Oklahoma State.
- 2:21:30Here's the pitch. Swung trying to hit the right field and he missed it.
- 2:21:356-4 in favor of Boston.
- 2:21:46The Red Sox have hit four homers in this game. The Cardinals have hit one.
- 2:21:54Now Jaster's pitch fouled out of play into the press box.
- 2:22:04Looks like Milt Richmond got his hands on that one.
- 2:22:09Jerry Adair with runners at first and third.
- 2:22:14One out. Red Sox leading 6-4.
- 2:22:23Jaster's pitch. Long drive center field.
- 2:22:26Flood will get it but the run will score. There's the catch. Here comes the runner. A sacrifice fly.
- 2:22:35Oh the Red Sox leading 7-4.
- 2:22:41Adair drives in his first run of the series.
- 2:22:45With a count of two strikes and a ball, a line to Flood in center field.
- 2:22:49And Andrews tagged up and scored after the catch.
- 2:22:54Here now is George Scott.
- 2:23:03John Wyatt who allowed the two runs on Brock's homer that tied up the ball game would be the pitcher of record.
- 2:23:11Here's a pitch high.
- 2:23:14He went out for a pinch hitter in this inning when Dalton Jones batted for him in single right.
- 2:23:19And that started it off.
- 2:23:29Larry Jaster.
- 2:23:34The sixth cardinal pitcher today.
- 2:23:42He swung and he missed. He tried to stop. He had gone around.
- 2:23:46That evens it up for the ball and a strike.
- 2:23:50If the Red Sox win, it necessitates the seventh and final and decisive game of the World Series here tomorrow
- 2:24:01with Bob Gibson for the Cardinals and Jim Lomborgue for the Red Sox.
- 2:24:06However, will there have been a more dramatic setting in World Series history?
- 2:24:17One-one pitch. He had a cut and he missed strike two.
- 2:24:22Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:24:27George Scott nothing out of three.
- 2:24:32Four out of 21 in the series.
- 2:24:37Yes, Strumsky who has now enjoyed two three-hit games in the series.
- 2:24:47The pitch swung. Round ball.
- 2:24:49Knoxville breaking the wrong way and the ball goes by him.
- 2:24:52Knoxville was breaking to his right.
- 2:24:55He must have lost the ball in the shirt of one of the fans
- 2:24:59because the ball was hit right at him and he was breaking to the opposite way.
- 2:25:04Pee-wee. Many a ground ball went toward you at shot stop.
- 2:25:08What could have happened there?
- 2:25:10All right, that's a good question.
- 2:25:12Unless that ball hit something in the infield and kicked back to the right,
- 2:25:18but he looked like just as soon as the ball was hit, he broke to his right
- 2:25:23and the ball, if he'd have stayed right where he was, the ball would have come right to him.
- 2:25:27Maybe you could lose the ball in the shirts, but today it's a little cool.
- 2:25:31Most of the people have on dark clothing. I don't know, Harry.
- 2:25:35It's funny, he moved as we related.
- 2:25:38He moved to his right and the ball went to his left.
- 2:25:41So it's a base hit for Scott.
- 2:25:43And Reggie Smith, who has hit two home runs left-handed in the series,
- 2:25:48now turns around to bat right-handed against Larry Jess.
- 2:25:53Little pitch. And it's high.
- 2:25:56One ball, no strikes.
- 2:25:59The Cardinals have used Hughes, Willis, Brails, LaMabe, Harner, and Jaster.
- 2:26:12Reggie Smith.
- 2:26:15The pitch. Strike called at the knees.
- 2:26:18And that evens in a ball and a strike.
- 2:26:23Runners at first and second. Two men are on.
- 2:26:27Three runs of score.
- 2:26:29This is the second three-run inning that the Red Sox have had today.
- 2:26:34The pitch. High pop-fly, short left center.
- 2:26:38Hit by drop, everybody chasing it. Base hit.
- 2:26:41Here's a one-run score.
- 2:26:43Here's one throw towards the plate cutoff.
- 2:26:47And Reggie Smith goes to second base.
- 2:26:50The crowd roaring. No way of talking over them.
- 2:27:16These fans are enjoying themselves today as the Red Sox now score four in the seventh.
- 2:27:23And Larry Jaster's going to be taken out.
- 2:27:26He faced three men, retired one of them. The other two hit safely.
- 2:27:35Joe Harner faced two men, both got hits, both have scored.
- 2:27:40His one-run average will soar astronomically as a result.
- 2:27:50And this is the ninth man coming up.
- 2:27:54Rico Petrocelli and all he's done today is hit two home runs. Two out of three.
- 2:28:02The Cardinals putting into action their seventh pitcher of the afternoon.
- 2:28:12You know, Peeway, I remember the 1964 World Series, the Cardinals leading Yankee Stadium,
- 2:28:19had a three-game to two lead, and were coming back home to Bush Stadium, their old ballpark.
- 2:28:27And everybody thought that they would wrap it up in that sixth game at home.
- 2:28:32And the Yankees went on a home run barrage, reminiscent of what the Red Sox have done here today,
- 2:28:40and pounded the Cardinals badly, forcing the decisive game, which Bob Gibson then pitched for the victory.
- 2:28:47But that was at home.
- 2:28:50If they go into, if they have to go into a seventh game here tomorrow,
- 2:28:54they'll be at a Fenway Park that has not yet been too friendly toward them.
- 2:29:01Well, hey, of course you have one thing, or so we say the Cardinals have one thing going for them tomorrow.
- 2:29:07Of course, so does the Red Sox. But Gibson, in his two starts against this ball club,
- 2:29:12looks to me like he's just overpowered them.
- 2:29:15Now, he's going to have one more day rest than Jim Lombard, who has pitched terrific ball against the Cardinals.
- 2:29:22The one thing that kind of concerns me about the Cardinal ball club,
- 2:29:26they don't look like the champions here today. Of course, this happens to ball clubs.
- 2:29:31And their bullpen has looked like it's been very weak today.
- 2:29:35They've had trouble getting that one man out.
- 2:29:39And I know that winning that national league by ten and a half games,
- 2:29:44or whatever they wanted by, I'm sure that their bullpen was much stronger throughout the year.
- 2:29:49There's Rico Petroselli to face Ray Washburn.
- 2:29:53And they're going to walk him intentionally to get to Elston Howard.
- 2:30:01So the bases will be loaded, and the tenth man in the inning,
- 2:30:05Elston Howard, who started it all by bouncing out to Shannon,
- 2:30:10will be coming up again with the bases loaded.
- 2:30:15Howard, you know, accounted for the insurance runs in the Monday game
- 2:30:25in a similar situation when he popped a single or short right.
- 2:30:29Bases are loaded. Four runs are in.
- 2:30:37Two men are out, and Elston Howard is a batter.
- 2:30:43Ray Washburn lines. Curveball high and inside.
- 2:30:55This is the seventh pitcher.
- 2:30:58We're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:31:01Here's a pitch swung and missed, the curveball.
- 2:31:04The Red Sox are leading eight to four.
- 2:31:10They've had 11 hits, eight runs, four home runs.
- 2:31:14The Cardinals four runs on five hits.
- 2:31:17The pitch, bouncing ball to Shannon. Big hop, he's got it.
- 2:31:21Rose to first, the inning is open.
- 2:31:24But four runs scored. Six hits, one error, three left.
- 2:31:29And at the end of the seventh inning, the Red Sox eight, the Cardinals four.
- 2:31:36Well, we have a new right fielder in George Thomas taking over for Jose Tardubo.
- 2:31:43We have a new pitcher, Gary Bell.
- 2:31:47And talking about pitching, the four pitchers used by the Cards in that last inning ties a series record.
- 2:31:57Seemed like there's a lot of series records being tied today.
- 2:32:00And another thing, in the second game of the 1960s series, Elson Howard got two hits in one inning, a triple in a single.
- 2:32:09In this last inning, he started out by grounding out the inning by grounding out to the third baseman,
- 2:32:17and he entered the inning by grounding out to the third baseman. He made two outs in that inning.
- 2:32:23They say by baseball, if you stick around long enough, Pee-wee, you'll see everything.
- 2:32:30And Elson Howard, who in one World Series got two hits in one inning, and another one makes two outs in one inning.
- 2:32:38And Gary Bell is the new pitcher on the outside.
- 2:32:50Top of the eighth, Sepeda leads it off, eight to four Red Sox.
- 2:32:54Bell's first pitch is a high inside fastball.
- 2:32:58Bell's appearing in his third game. He started one, he relieved in one.
- 2:33:03He lost the game he started.
- 2:33:07Shannon hit a two-run homer off of him in that game.
- 2:33:10Here's the pitch on the way to Sepeda.
- 2:33:12Oh, and he missed it.
- 2:33:15And the count evens it about on a strike.
- 2:33:17Sepeda with nothing out of three today.
- 2:33:21This is the fourth game out of the six that he's been hit with since.
- 2:33:25He's driven in one run. He hasn't hit any homers.
- 2:33:29He's two out of 22.
- 2:33:33Fouled it back and out of play, and he's in the hole. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:33:38And Pee-wee, whenever a guy's in a little bit of a slump, no matter who it is,
- 2:33:42it always seems like every time you look up, he's got two strikes on him.
- 2:33:46Yeah, it certainly does.
- 2:33:47The only way to get that pitcher a little convo is just get it over.
- 2:33:50He won't hit it.
- 2:33:51But as I said before, it looks like, you know, if the pitcher was throwing him a curveball
- 2:33:56and making him look bad, you'd say, well, this fellow's timing is completely off.
- 2:34:00But he's having a very good cut at the ball, staying with it on the ball,
- 2:34:03but all he's doing is popping up, just not quite getting it, or he's fouling the ball off.
- 2:34:08Top of the eighth, eight to four in favor of Boston.
- 2:34:13And Gary Bell winds. Here's the pitch.
- 2:34:17He didn't mean to swing, a little tap over the pitcher's head.
- 2:34:20In fast, the second baseman can't make a play.
- 2:34:22It's a hit for Cepeda.
- 2:34:25On a little roller, over the pitcher's head.
- 2:34:31Andrews came charging in, but the only possible play he would have had is
- 2:34:36if he could have picked the ball up barehanded, which he didn't do.
- 2:34:41So it's a scratch hit to start the eighth.
- 2:34:44And here's McCarver, like Cepeda, in a slump in the series, two out of 18.
- 2:34:49You have to admire Cepeda. He gets down first base.
- 2:34:53This is a real cheap hit he just gets, but he hasn't lost his spirit.
- 2:34:57He's hollering to McCarver, giving him the fifth. He says, come on, let's go, let's go.
- 2:35:01That's great.
- 2:35:02So we have Red Sox leading eight to four.
- 2:35:05Here's a pitch to McCarver, swung on it foul.
- 2:35:08The Cardinals have a runner at first base with nobody out in the eighth.
- 2:35:14Eight to four, Boston.
- 2:35:19Activity out there, and the Red Sox bullpen.
- 2:35:25A left-hander, the only left-hander they have is the 19-year-old youngster Brett, Ken Brett.
- 2:35:31So he's working out there.
- 2:35:34McCarver with a counter strike one.
- 2:35:36Here's a pitch. Curveball inside, evens it up.
- 2:35:40One ball, one strike. Gary Bell.
- 2:35:49From San Antonio, Texas.
- 2:35:55Cepeda, a safe lead. Scott plays back. Here's a pitch.
- 2:36:00Fly ball on the left field, going back, back is Jastriewski near the wall.
- 2:36:04One-handed tap. Beautiful play.
- 2:36:13Paul Jastriewski ran almost into center field.
- 2:36:17McCarver's long drive and hauled it in with one hand over his shoulder.
- 2:36:22And Dick Williams now, the manager of the Red Sox, comes out to talk to Gary Bell.
- 2:36:30That ball was really hit.
- 2:36:33You know, there's an example, P.W. of what I was referring to with Lou Brock on the double-by-four.
- 2:36:40Every left fielder in this ballpark, because of the short distance down the line, plays far over, abnormally over towards center field.
- 2:36:48Now, there's a play ordinarily as an extra base hit.
- 2:36:52But because Jastriewski starts off playing towards center, he's able to reach the ball.
- 2:36:57And Brock, by contrast, playing over towards center field, couldn't reach a ball that was hit to his right in what normally would be his position.
- 2:37:08So there are peculiarities presenting themselves as a result of the construction of the ballpark.
- 2:37:16Here's Shannon. The curve is low.
- 2:37:20Shannon Homer off Bell in St. Louis.
- 2:37:27He's nothing out of three in this contest.
- 2:37:30One out, one on, the ball game in the eighth.
- 2:37:33Bell's pitch. Swung and he missed the fastball.
- 2:37:37That evens out a ball and a strike.
- 2:37:44The Cardinals have had four runs on six hits. The Red Sox have made eight runs with 11 hits.
- 2:37:51And four of those 11 hits have been home runs.
- 2:37:56Three of them in one inning.
- 2:37:57Shannon swings a fly ball to left center. Jastriewski chasing this one.
- 2:38:01So's Reggie Smith. Off the wall.
- 2:38:03There's Sepeta going in the third and Shannon the second with a double.
- 2:38:07Ooh, that Reggie Smith picked the ball up at the 379 mark and threw it into second base on the fly.
- 2:38:19Shannon has doubled off the 379 mark.
- 2:38:23And here's Javier.
- 2:38:26After Sepeta's scratch hit, McClough had a line drive that Jastriewski made a fine play on.
- 2:38:32And Shannon bang went off the left center field wall.
- 2:38:35Here's Javier.
- 2:38:40Runners at second and third.
- 2:38:43Javier one out of three in the game.
- 2:38:46Gary Bell's pitch.
- 2:38:49Line drive to the third base would turn out.
- 2:38:52Javier lined hard to find.
- 2:38:57That's two gone and here's Maxwell.
- 2:39:03Gary Bell isn't exactly pulling up here in this inning, but he's pitching strong as ball.
- 2:39:10Runners are at second and third with two out.
- 2:39:15Maxwell nothing out of three in the contest.
- 2:39:19Two out of 15 in the series.
- 2:39:22Time is being called for Ray Washburn, the pitcher, to come out on the on deck circle.
- 2:39:30That's one of baseball's technicalities.
- 2:39:34The next hitter must be kneeling in the on deck circle.
- 2:39:43Here's Bell's pitch to Maxwell.
- 2:39:46Fastball is high.
- 2:39:48One ball, no strikes, two out.
- 2:39:50Runners at second and third.
- 2:39:52The score, Boston 8, St. Louis 4.
- 2:39:57Maxwell.
- 2:40:01Waits and Gary Bell's pitch.
- 2:40:04He held up ball two.
- 2:40:06He didn't go around on the curve ball.
- 2:40:08And the Red Sox walk about that one.
- 2:40:11Elston Howard, rolling around to talk to Paul Pryor.
- 2:40:14Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:40:17The pitcher, Ray Washburn, would be next.
- 2:40:25Now the signal.
- 2:40:27Here's the pitch.
- 2:40:30Strike call to fastball.
- 2:40:34Hal Woodishick, veteran left-hander who started in the American League,
- 2:40:38is now warming up on the bullpen for the card.
- 2:40:44Two balls and a strike.
- 2:40:45Maxwell the hitter.
- 2:40:51Here's the pitch.
- 2:40:54One lead, a strike two.
- 2:40:58And Bell is caught up now at two balls, two strikes.
- 2:41:03Gary Bell comes in protecting a four-run lead.
- 2:41:08The pitcher of record right now is Wyatt.
- 2:41:11For the Red Sox and LeMabe, a former Red Sox by the way, for the Cardinals.
- 2:41:20Gary Bell's 2-2 pitch to Dyle Maxwell.
- 2:41:24High pump foul back and out of play.
- 2:41:28There are two men out, runners at second and third.
- 2:41:35We're in the top of the eighth.
- 2:41:37A wild ball game today.
- 2:41:43In which the Red Sox are leading 8-4.
- 2:41:47Two balls, two strikes, two out, two on.
- 2:41:51Gary Bell is ready.
- 2:41:53The pitch to Maxwell.
- 2:41:55Here it is.
- 2:41:56Ball three.
- 2:41:58And the count is full.
- 2:42:01And if he walks him, it would bring up the tying run.
- 2:42:05Whomever it might be, it won't be Washburn who is scheduled next.
- 2:42:14Three balls, two strikes on Dyle Maxwell.
- 2:42:16Gary Bell's pitch.
- 2:42:18Almost hits the ball.
- 2:42:20Four, the bases are loaded.
- 2:42:23Boy, I tell you, Peewee, no runner scored yet.
- 2:42:27The bases are loaded and two shots were hit that were caught.
- 2:42:31This could have been some inning for the Cardinals.
- 2:42:33Certainly could.
- 2:42:34Of course, Sepadak started things off here with kind of a cheap hit.
- 2:42:39But then Maserowski made a great play in left field to retire McHarver.
- 2:42:46And Shannon got a line drive double off the wall out in left center.
- 2:42:53Javier had a line drive.
- 2:42:55Boy, I would say that Bell is not exactly fool hitters.
- 2:42:59But he got himself in a jam here by walking down Maxwell to shortstop and brings a tying run to the plate.
- 2:43:06And Harry, I imagine, I'm not sure, you know more about this than I do, Dave Ricketts may be the hitter.
- 2:43:12KMOX and KMOX FM, St. Louis.
- 2:43:14Well, Dave is just coming out of the bullpen. He's a switch hitter.
- 2:43:18So if he's employed, it won't make any difference who the pitcher is.
- 2:43:24He would have that percentage of hitting either right-handed against a left-hander, who's warming up in the bullpen, Ken Brett,
- 2:43:30or left-handed against a right-hander, who's Gary Bell.
- 2:43:37Dave Ricketts it will be.
- 2:43:40Ricketts in this series has been the bat twice, nothing out of two.
- 2:43:50The bases are loaded, so Ricketts represents the tying run.
- 2:43:55But more than that, Peewee, is the fact that Lou Brock would be next.
- 2:44:01And he's had quite a day. He's batted in three runs, and they struck him out.
- 2:44:06It looked like they had the solution the first time he got up.
- 2:44:11Then things begin to happen with Brock, and he makes things happen.
- 2:44:16So Dave Ricketts steps up, hit one home run during the regular season.
- 2:44:24The outfield plays him straight away.
- 2:44:27Yes, Stramsky's great catch on McCarver's line drive is a big play in this inning.
- 2:44:34Bases are loaded, two men are out.
- 2:44:38Gary Bell into the windup. The pitch today Ricketts swings, and he fouls it back and out of play.
- 2:44:45One strike, no ball.
- 2:44:50We're in the top of the eighth in the most eventful ball game of the whole series.
- 2:44:58The emphasis has been on muscle today, not pitching.
- 2:45:03It's brute strength not finesse this afternoon.
- 2:45:07Eight to four, Red Sox. The pitch to Ricketts.
- 2:45:11Inside a slider, barely missed.
- 2:45:14And the count is evened up in a ball and a strike.
- 2:45:17Two men are out. Maxville's at first, Shannon at second, Sepade at third.
- 2:45:24The score eight to four, Boston.
- 2:45:30The Cardinals will tie another record today.
- 2:45:33In the bottom of the eighth, their new pitcher will be the Eighth U's.
- 2:45:37And that ties the series record.
- 2:45:39Here's the pitch to Ricketts.
- 2:45:41High fly ball to the left field, and Stramsky's back waiting.
- 2:45:44He's got it for a tie to sign.
- 2:45:48The score was no run. Two hits, no errors, three left.
- 2:45:53The Cardinals have stranded eight.
- 2:45:55And at the end of seven and a half innings, the score, Boston eight, St. Louis four.
- 2:46:03By going in, about a half the eighth and eight, the Cardinals will have one more chance
- 2:46:09to get back in this ball game they trail by a score of eight to four.
- 2:46:13The Cardinals have four runs on seven hits.
- 2:46:15The Boston Red Sox have eight runs on eleven hits.
- 2:46:37Hal Woodishick enters the ball game as the eighth pitcher for the Cardinals,
- 2:46:42and that ties the World Series record.
- 2:46:45Set by Cincinnati against the Yankees in 1961.
- 2:46:49George Thomas will lead it on.
- 2:46:52Came in to play right field.
- 2:46:54Right handed batter.
- 2:46:56A pitch by Woodishick, swung and fouled back.
- 2:47:00Thomas making his second appearance.
- 2:47:05Second time, his first time he pinch hit was retired, striking out.
- 2:47:11We're in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:47:14Here's the fifth.
- 2:47:15Bouncing ball to Maxville.
- 2:47:17Big hop, he's got it, throws to first.
- 2:47:19End time.
- 2:47:22And here is Joe Foy, the third baseman.
- 2:47:26He got that big double in the seventh inning.
- 2:47:30It started things rolling for the Red Sox.
- 2:47:38Now the Red Sox, eleven hits, four of them homers, one's been a double.
- 2:47:42The other singles, of course.
- 2:47:44Bouncing ball right back to Woodishick.
- 2:47:46Flips over to first.
- 2:47:48In making the soft lob, he almost threw it away.
- 2:47:53Two men gone.
- 2:47:55Here's Mike Andrews.
- 2:47:57He had a big hit in the seventh inning.
- 2:48:02Every hit the Red Sox have had today has been a big hit.
- 2:48:11Yastrowski had three out of four in the second game of the World Series,
- 2:48:15and he's had three out of three in this, the sixth game.
- 2:48:20Andrews hits a bouncing ball behind second base.
- 2:48:23Maxville can't come up with it.
- 2:48:25It'll be a base hit.
- 2:48:28A high hopper over the middle.
- 2:48:33It's a hit for Andrews.
- 2:48:36It gives him two off.
- 2:48:38Listen to the hand for Yastrowski.
- 2:48:40Standing ovation.
- 2:48:57Here's Carl Yastrowski with a runner first, two on.
- 2:49:00Woodishick's pitch.
- 2:49:01Ground ball up the middle.
- 2:49:02Hot air to his right.
- 2:49:03Up to the wall throwing to second just in time.
- 2:49:06He could never have gotten Yastrowski.
- 2:49:09So it is no runs, one hit.
- 2:49:10No errors, one left.
- 2:49:12The Red Sox have stranded seventh.
- 2:49:14And at the end of eighth is Boston eighth, St. Louis fourth.
- 2:49:20Okay, Peewee.
- 2:49:24Lou Brock steps up there, and your turn at the microphone.
- 2:49:28Okay, Harry, Lou Brock.
- 2:49:30First pitch for Gary Bell.
- 2:49:32Hit high out on the right field.
- 2:49:33That ball is going way back to the wind.
- 2:49:35May take it out of here.
- 2:49:36Look out.
- 2:49:37Thomas right back up against that fence.
- 2:49:41Put his hand on top of the fence, ready to jump.
- 2:49:44But it came right down to him as Lou Brock almost had his second home run of the day.
- 2:49:49Yards Thomas got back to that fence.
- 2:49:59Put his hand up on top of the rail, ready to leap in the air.
- 2:50:03But the ball came right down in his glove, so it's one away.
- 2:50:06And that brings up Kurt Flood.
- 2:50:12Kurt, one for four.
- 2:50:15Got a base hit in the third inning.
- 2:50:17Gary Bell's first pitch to him inside, ball one.
- 2:50:23One ball, no strikes.
- 2:50:26One away.
- 2:50:27Kurt Flood the hitter.
- 2:50:33Gary Bell doesn't wind up.
- 2:50:34Here's the pitch to Kurt.
- 2:50:35Ball hit right back to the middle.
- 2:50:37Mike Andrews over, pummels the ball.
- 2:50:38The throw to Scott.
- 2:50:39They got it.
- 2:50:40The ball was hit pretty hard right back through the middle.
- 2:50:58Andrews to his right, braced that foot, hit in his glove.
- 2:51:03He could not pick it up right away, but he still had enough on it to throw a foot out
- 2:51:09at first base, so it's two away.
- 2:51:10Roger Maris, there's a hitter.
- 2:51:11Gary Bell under the windup.
- 2:51:12Fastball is outside.
- 2:51:13Ball one.
- 2:51:14Roger Maris struck out, single, walked and flied out.
- 2:51:15Elson Howard giving the signs.
- 2:51:16Gary Bell under the windup.
- 2:51:17Fastball hit off out of the left field.
- 2:51:18Could be in there for a base hit, but he cannot catch up with it.
- 2:51:19Fair-handed.
- 2:51:20He finally slaps it and knocks it down.
- 2:51:21Roger Maris, he's got it.
- 2:51:22He's got it.
- 2:51:23He's got it.
- 2:51:24He's got it.
- 2:51:25He's got it.
- 2:51:26He's got it.
- 2:51:27He's got it.
- 2:51:28He's got it.
- 2:51:29He's got it.
- 2:51:30He's got it.
- 2:51:31He's got it.
- 2:51:32He's got it.
- 2:51:33He's got it.
- 2:51:39He's got it.
- 2:51:44Solcepeda gets another chance.
- 2:51:57The last time up, he tried to check his swing on a breaking pitch by Bell.
- 2:52:06Andrews came in fast.
- 2:52:09It was a slow hit ball.
- 2:52:11Could not go Cepeda out, and he got himself a base hit.
- 2:52:15So the Cardinals hopes are still alive.
- 2:52:17Bell's pitched to Cepeda. There goes the ball on the left field.
- 2:52:19It may go foul. It's a foul ball.
- 2:52:22It would have been a home run down that left field line by Cepeda, but it was just foul.
- 2:52:29That's what happens. Now he's hit some balls right in the nose right at somebody.
- 2:52:32He hits this one a mile, but just barely fouled.
- 2:52:36Orlando just a little bit out in front of that curve ball of Gary Bell.
- 2:52:40Bell shakes his head to Elston Howard.
- 2:52:43He looks over to Roger Maris at first base.
- 2:52:44The pitch to Cepeda.
- 2:52:46Little tap. Bell should have it. He has it.
- 2:52:48The throw to Scott. That's off to Cepeda.
- 2:52:51And that's all for the Cardinals here.
- 2:52:53The top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:52:55No runs. One hit. No air. One man left on base.
- 2:52:59So the score. And that's the final score.
- 2:53:03The Stantler's Cardinals four and the Boston Red Sox eight.
