- 0:14Right. And on paper, you are in serious trouble.
- 0:16Like your business is just burning through cash at an alarming rate.
- 0:20And that massive licensing partnership you were relying on to,
- 0:23you know, kind of carry you through the next few years, that just collapsed. Oh, wow.
- 0:28Yeah, that is a nightmare scenario. Exactly.
- 0:30So you were forced into this incredibly uncomfortable position of going back
- 0:34to your shareholders, practically begging for more capital just to keep your
- 0:38factory running and your research alive.
- 0:41Which is a tough sell. A very tough sell. For anyone looking at your balance
- 0:44sheet, the situation looks incredibly grim.
- 0:47But then, almost out of nowhere, you secure a massive $41 million financial
- 0:53lifeline. That is a plot twist.
- 0:55And the wildest part is that it does not come from like a Wall Street investment
- 0:59bank or some desperate venture capitalist.
- 1:02It comes directly from the United States military.
- 1:04Huh. Yeah, that kind of sudden intervention, it completely changes the gravity
- 1:08of a company's financial narrative.
- 1:10I mean, you go from this grueling story of mere survival to a story of.
- 1:15Well, immense, albeit highly calculated potential.
- 1:18It is the type of catalyst that just forces the entire market to reevaluate
- 1:23what they thought they knew about your core assets.
- 1:25Which makes this the perfect subject for us today. Welcome to the Dipe Dive, everyone.
- 1:29We are cracking open a brand new initiation report from Phillip Capital on a
- 1:34company called IX Biopharma.
- 1:37A very interesting case study right now. It really is. And our mission for this
- 1:41deep dive is to look at this business purely through the lens of a skeptical investor.
- 1:46We need to understand, you know, why the recent financial performance looks
- 1:49so incredibly weak, how this massive influx of military funding actually works
- 1:54mechanically to save them.
- 1:56And we need to map out the genuine opportunities against the very real risks
- 2:00that come with biotech investing. Right.
- 2:02And just setting the foundation here, if you are looking to invest in the pharmaceutical
- 2:07space, you really have to understand that survival usually boils down to this
- 2:11brutal balancing act. How so?
- 2:13Well, you have to secure enough capital to drag your drug through years and
- 2:17years of expensive clinical trials,
- 2:19but you have to do it without either surrendering the rights to your best products
- 2:24or completely destroying the value of your existing shares in the process.
- 2:29Yeah. Eyeing Spiopharma has been walking that exact tightrope and,
- 2:33I mean, they nearly fell off.
- 2:34They really did. And to appreciate the magnitude of this military grant,
- 2:39we have to look at the precarious reality they were living in just a few months ago.
- 2:42Let's do a quick reality check on their balance sheet. Let's do it.
- 2:45So this company was founded back in 2008 and they listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2015.
- 2:51But if you just glance at their recent earnings reports, It is not a pretty picture.
- 2:56During their fiscal year 2024 and fiscal year 2025, they recorded net losses
- 3:01of around $10 million each year.
- 3:03Yeah, and if you dig into the revenue side, it is actually even more concerning
- 3:06because their total revenue for fiscal year 2025 was a mere $7.7 million.
- 3:13But the real red flag for an institutional investor is the concentration of
- 3:18that revenue. Right. It was mostly one thing, wasn't it? Exactly.
- 3:20Roughly 80% of that money came from a single product.
- 3:24It is a medicinal cannabis product called Zetiva, and it is sold exclusively in Australia. Oh, wow.
- 3:31Yeah. So trying to fund a global pharmaceutical research pipeline on the back
- 3:35of, you know, one regional medicinal cannabis product, that is a deeply stressful
- 3:40position for any balance sheet.
- 3:42I mean, if I'm an investor looking at that, my immediate thought is,
- 3:45why am I putting my money into a company losing $10 million a year selling Australian wheat?
- 3:50Exactly. Especially because things actually got much worse for them recently.
- 3:54In 2024, they suffered a massive setback. They had a licensing agreement with
- 3:58a partner called Cilos Therapeutics.
- 4:01And that deal was supposed to be their revenue engine, but the agreement was
- 4:05suddenly terminated. Which is devastating. Completely.
- 4:09NIAX Biopharma was forced to take back the rights to their lead drug.
- 4:13So suddenly, the financial burden of continuing those trials fell squarely back
- 4:17onto their own shoulders.
- 4:19Which, of course, triggers an immediate cash flow crisis.
- 4:22Because when a partner pulls out, those trial costs, they do not just vanish.
- 4:27Like the bills keep coming. The clinical machinery has to keep moving.
- 4:31So to plug that massive hole, IX Biopharma was forced to raise $21.7 million,
- 4:38by issuing new shares to investors throughout late 2025 and early 2026.
- 4:43Which, you know, issuing new shares just to survive is one of the most painful
- 4:47things a company can do to its early backers. Oh, absolutely.
- 4:50It is basically like watering down the soup at a restaurant because you suddenly
- 4:53have more customers than food. That is a great way to put it.
- 4:56Right. Like the bowl might look full to the new people sitting down,
- 4:59but the existing shareholders are left tasting a much weaker diluted broth.
- 5:04Their ownership percentage just shrank. So if the core financials are this weak,
- 5:10and their previous partnerships crumbled, there has to be a hidden asset here.
- 5:14Like, why on earth is a firm like Philip Capital suddenly initiating coverage
- 5:19with a buy recommendation?
- 5:21Well, the hidden asset is not a new chemical compound. It is actually their
- 5:25proprietary delivery technology.
- 5:27Okay. It is a platform they call WaferX.
- 5:31Basically, they have engineered this highly specialized method for delivering
- 5:35existing drugs into the human body using a tiny freeze-dried wafer that you
- 5:40just place underneath the tongue.
- 5:42Okay, I know sublingual delivery is becoming more popular, but like mechanically
- 5:46speaking, why is that so much better than just swallowing a traditional pill?
- 5:50What is the actual biological advantage there? It really comes down to bypassing

- 6:12So it treats the medication almost like a toxin. It starts breaking it down

- 7:24Isn't ketamine primarily known as an illegal party drug or, like,
- 7:28at best, a heavy animal tranquilizer used by veterinarians?
- 7:32That is the common perception, yes. Right. So why is the United States Department
- 7:37of Defense handing over $41 million
- 7:39to fund the final phase three clinical trials for a ketamine wafer?
- 7:45It just sounds completely counterintuitive. Well, the public perception of ketamine
- 7:49is definitely skewed by its illicit recreational use.
- 7:53But in the medical community, it actually has a remarkably long and established
- 7:57track record of safety when it is administered correctly. Really? Yeah.
- 8:01Biologically, ketamine operates as an NMDA receptor antagonist.
- 8:05So if you picture your nervous system like a busy highway carrying pain signals
- 8:09from your injured body up to your brain. Okay.
- 8:11Tracking with you. Ketamine essentially acts as a physical roadblock on that highway.
- 8:15It literally stops the electrical pain signals from ever reaching the brain's receptors.
- 8:19So the military is not looking at this for, you know, recreational impairment.
- 8:24They are aggressively pursuing it for severe battlefield trauma.
- 8:29OK, let's stick a pin in the battlefield application for just a second,
- 8:32because we need to look at this from the financial side first.
- 8:35Fair enough. That $41 million from the Department of Defense is what the industry
- 8:40calls non-dilutive funding.
- 8:43Right. For an investor, this is the absolute dream scenario.
- 8:48Oh, it is the holy grail of biotech financing.
- 8:52IX Biopharma is getting the cold, hard cash they desperately need to execute
- 8:57phase three clinical trials, which, by the way, are notoriously the most expensive
- 9:00part of the drug development life cycle.
- 9:02Yeah, that makes sense. But crucially, because it is a military grant and not
- 9:06an equity investment, the company does not have to surrender a single percentage
- 9:10point of ownership in the drug.
- 9:12So no more watering down the soup. Exactly. They do not have to water down the
- 9:15soup anymore by issuing new shares.
- 9:16They retain total control over the asset, while the United States government
- 9:20essentially foots the entire research and development bill.
- 9:23They bypass the ruthless venture capitalists entirely.
- 9:27That is a massive win for the balance sheet. Huge win. But surely the Department
- 9:31of Defense is not handing out $41 million just to be generous.
- 9:34There have to be a desperate need. Why is this specific ketamine wafer so critical?
- 9:41You really have to look at the alternative, which is currently a massive global crisis.
- 9:45The market for treating acute short-term pain is estimated at roughly $13 billion globally.
- 9:52Okay. And right now, the absolute standard of care across the medical field
- 9:56relies heavily on opioids.
- 9:58In the United States alone, studies indicate that about 80 percent of all surgical
- 10:03patients receive opioid-level painkillers.
- 10:05And the economic fallout from that reliance is just staggering.
- 10:09The sources note that the opioid crisis costs the United States economy around
- 10:13$1.5 trillion every single year.
- 10:16It is unbelievable. We are talking about addiction treatment,
- 10:19long-term health care costs, criminal justice expenses, and just a massive hemorrhage
- 10:24in workplace productivity. It is an economic black hole.
- 10:28Exactly. Now, transpose that problem onto a combat environment.
- 10:32Imagine a soldier wounded in the field. They're experiencing severe trauma,

- 10:54cognitive impairment, respiratory depression, and obviously the well-documented
- 10:58risk of long-term addiction. Right.

- 12:29without surviving the timeline. Ah, right.
- 12:32The dreaded timeline. Because even with the Department of Defense fully funding
- 12:37these final trials, full approval from the Food and Drug Administration is not
- 12:41expected until early 2029.
- 12:44Right. Four years is a lifetime for a small company. If they are currently leasing
- 12:48$10 million a year, how on earth do they survive the long winter between now
- 12:53and 2029 without watering down the soup again?
- 12:55Well, the management team recognized that exact vulnerability.
- 12:59They have engineered a complex bridge to generate revenue long before 2020.
- 13:04They expect cash to start flowing significantly around early 2027,
- 13:09and they are doing this utilizing two very distinct strategies.
- 13:13Okay, I'm looking at the first strategy here, and it leverages their relationship with the military.
- 13:18The military is not going to wait for the general public to get access.
- 13:21Right. They plan to purchase wafer mine under emergency use authorization.
- 13:25And this is a specific legal mechanism designed solely for immediate battlefield
- 13:29deployment and operational medical use. Philip Capital estimates these initial
- 13:33orders could start in early 2027 and bring in around $3 million.

- 14:00But you are right, it is not enough on its own. Which brings us to their second,
- 14:04much larger revenue bridge.
- 14:07What is that? They are pivoting hard into the United States compounding pharmacy
- 14:11market, which is currently valued at roughly $6 billion.
- 14:15OK, I need you to explain this because I see compounding pharmacies on like
- 14:19street corners, but I do not understand how a company developing battlefield
- 14:24trauma narcotics fits into that space. It is an interesting pivot.
- 14:29Compounding pharmacies exist to serve a very specific legal and medical loophole.
- 14:34Historically, if a patient is allergic to, say.
- 14:38A specific red dye used in a mass-produced, factory-made pill,
- 14:42a local pharmacist needs the legal authority to custom mix a safe version of
- 14:47that drug from scratch for that specific patient. That makes sense.
- 14:51Because these are personalized, one-off medications, they do not have to go
- 14:54through the decade-long Food and Drug Administration approval process required
- 14:59for mass-manufactured drugs. Oh, I see where this is going. Yeah.
- 15:02In late 2025, IX Biopharma partnered with a United States company called Orion Specialty Labs.
- 15:09This allows them to use that legal framework to manufacture and sell custom
- 15:13mixed medications directly to consumers.
- 15:15Wait, I need to stop you there. They are teaming up with telehealth platforms
- 15:18to sell directly to consumers.
- 15:20Yes. The report says they are going to use their wafer technology to deliver
- 15:23over-the-counter wellness supplements, specifically anti-aging compounds like,
- 15:28let me make sure I pronounce this right, nicotinamide adenindinucleotide. You got it.

- 17:26The far more common route is out licensing.
- 17:29Okay. Instead of building an army of salespeople, they partner with a massive
- 17:32established pharmaceutical giant that already has the global infrastructure in place.
- 17:38Let them do the heavy lifting. Exactly. Under this scenario,
- 17:41the report estimates IX Biopharma could receive a staggering $250 million upfront
- 17:48cash payment the moment the drug is approved.
- 17:52Wow. Plus, they would collect a 15% royalty on every single wafer sold worldwide in perpetuity.
- 17:59That sounds infinitely more appealing than trying to do it themselves.
- 18:02Much less risky, yeah. But there is a third option, a total exit.
- 18:06Exactly. A trade sale. An outright buyout. Think about all the massive pharmaceutical
- 18:11companies currently relying on opioid revenues.
- 18:14They see the writing on the wall. They know the future holds nothing but tighter
- 18:17regulations and massive lawsuits. For sure.
- 18:20One of those giants might simply buy iX Biopharma in its entirety just to acquire
- 18:25WaferMine, allowing them to replace their own toxic opioid portfolios with a

- 18:58The ultimate unavoidable risk in this sector is the science itself. Right.

- 19:10Now, to be fair, the earlier phase two trials for wafer mine provided exceptional data. They did, yeah.

- 20:08the potential for tremendous societal impact and massive financial reward against
- 20:13the very real binary risk of a clinical trial failure.
- 20:17Yeah. The United States military evaluated the data and decided the science
- 20:21was sound enough to risk $41 million.
- 20:24Now, the individual investor has to decide if they're willing to take that same leap of faith.
- 20:28It is a remarkable turnaround story, regardless of how it ends.
- 20:32I mean, going from struggling to keep the factory open to being actively backed
- 20:36by the Department of Defense to solve one of the most destructive medical crises
- 20:39of our generation. It really is fascinating.
- 20:41And as we wrap up, it leaves you with a really provocative thought to chew on.
- 20:46We have spent this entire deep dive analyzing the military and surgical applications
- 20:51of this fast-acting, under-the-tongue painkiller.
- 20:54But think about the broader implications for everyday life. Oh, absolutely.
