- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst. Paul,
- 0:22Speaker 3: we already have a college football upset.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Oh, big college football weekend started last night. UMass with
- 0:26Speaker 4: the upset of Rutgers. We feel like UMass football today.
- 0:29Speaker 4: The head coach of UMass, a half an hour away
- 0:31Speaker 4: on this show.
- 0:32Speaker 3: You know what's funny? We booked him weeks ago, too.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Yeah, you called it. You said, we've got to get
- 0:36Speaker 4: this guy on in case he takes Rutgers.
- 0:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they broke a 16-game losing streak, but
- 0:41Speaker 5: that's incredible. Let's start, though, on the other end of
- 0:43Speaker 5: the college football spectrum, Paul. Down in Louisiana. LSU apparently
- 0:47Speaker 5: found a friendly judge. The case was about players who'd
- 0:51Speaker 5: been in NFL camps wanting to come back to college football.
- 0:54Speaker 5: And yesterday, a judge ruled that they will be allowed,
- 0:56Speaker 5: including two players, Daquan Wright and Xavier Harris, transferring from
- 1:00Speaker 5: Ole Miss to LSU.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Could play this weekend. There's still some time.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Daquan Wright spoke outside the courthouse after the ruling and
- 1:08Speaker 5: said what he's looking forward to.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Just putting on a college uniform again and going out
- 1:14Speaker 2: there and having fun and embracing my opportunities.
- 1:16Speaker 3: You wouldn't be able to play until next Saturday, right?
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'm not really clear on everything, but I hope it'd
- 1:23Speaker 2: be this Saturday.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Well, the reason it's dark out is because the case
- 1:27Speaker 4: ended at 9 o'clock at night. The news broke 9
- 1:29Speaker 4: o'clock last night. Lane Kiffin and LSU 1-0 on the
- 1:33Speaker 4: season in the courtroom so far. But this is one
- 1:35Speaker 4: of those things, I'm not 100% sure this one's over.
- 1:38Speaker 4: The SEC has been pretty quiet the past 12 hours
- 1:41Speaker 4: on this story, and as we sit right now, those
- 1:42Speaker 4: players are playing for LSU and possibly a couple other colleges.
- 1:46Speaker 4: But it wouldn't surprise me if Greg Sankey says, let's
- 1:48Speaker 4: rally our lawyers and find a courtroom to injunct your injunction.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Because Greg Sankey is not a guy who waves a
- 1:55Speaker 4: white flag. He doesn't own a white flag. I could
- 1:57Speaker 4: see this having another turn, not before we get off air,
- 2:00Speaker 4: but before tonight's games start.
- 2:01Speaker 5: You know, I think the players made a powerful case, though.
- 2:04Speaker 5: I actually changed my mind in the middle of the case.
- 2:06Speaker 5: They came into the court and said, we didn't want
- 2:08Speaker 5: to go to NFL training camps. If we knew we
- 2:11Speaker 5: were allowed to go back to college football, we would
- 2:13Speaker 5: have done that. This is all about the class of 22.
- 2:16Speaker 5: It's an exception. So I think the players probably have
- 2:18Speaker 5: the right to play. I don't think Daquan Wright was
- 2:20Speaker 5: going to try out for a team. I think he
- 2:22Speaker 5: would be at LSU under normal circumstances.
- 2:24Speaker 4: So it's a complex story because it's about fairness. In
- 2:26Speaker 4: that 2022 class, and we don't want to get too
- 2:28Speaker 4: much in the weeds, they kind of got treated differently
- 2:30Speaker 4: than other classes, and their eligibility was not taken from
- 2:33Speaker 4: them but not given back to them in the same way.
- 2:36Speaker 4: But it should have been done in June. It should
- 2:37Speaker 4: have been done in July and wrapped up. What bothers people,
- 2:40Speaker 4: the average American sports fan, is like, how can you
- 2:42Speaker 4: go from a pro roster back to college? And they're
- 2:44Speaker 4: holding on to shreds of amateurism.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but that is going to be the exception. We
- 2:48Speaker 3: went over the numbers. Yes.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Basically, one out of every 700 FBS players will have
- 2:53Speaker 5: been in the NFL or tried out for the NFL.
- 2:55Speaker 5: This is not going to be a rash of guys
- 2:57Speaker 5: coming back.
- 2:57Speaker 4: But this story has become the most famous coach in
- 3:00Speaker 4: the conference, Lane Kiffin, now that Lane Saban's gone.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Versus the SEC. And the SEC versus their new head coach.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I know he was at Ole Miss last year, but
- 3:10Speaker 4: this is a wild situation. So laying Kiffin in the
- 3:13Speaker 4: SEC as a side soap opera inter-conference is the most
- 3:16Speaker 4: SEC thing ever.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what I like too, Paul? LSU's
- 3:19Speaker 3: playing Clemson this week. Is this the ultimate new school team?
- 3:24Speaker 5: LSU, 48 transfers, arguably the best transfer class in the
- 3:27Speaker 5: entire country. One of the richest transfer classes against Clemson.
- 3:31Speaker 5: who fought the whole system. You know, Dabo Sweeney doesn't
- 3:35Speaker 5: want transfers. He doesn't want to pay NIL. Now he's
- 3:38Speaker 5: come around begrudgingly. So I think this is a battle.
- 3:41Speaker 5: I don't want to say good versus evil because I'm
- 3:43Speaker 5: not sure who's good and who's evil.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It's old school, new school.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Old school, new school.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Dabo's a dial-up internet guy. He's a MySpace guy. He
- 3:49Speaker 4: wants to live in 1977, but it's not that anymore.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Dabo Sweeney and Clemson was dominating college football 8, 9,
- 3:56Speaker 4: 10 years ago. And he didn't keep up with the times.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin doesn't just keep up with the times. He
- 4:01Speaker 4: tries to find what the next opportunity to get players is.
- 4:05Speaker 4: But this is an opportunity for Dabo. I think they're
- 4:07Speaker 4: about a 10, 10.5 point underdog right now, Clemson. But
- 4:11Speaker 4: if he could somehow take down Lane Kiffin and LSU
- 4:15Speaker 4: on national TV, it's a refresher for Clemson football with
- 4:19Speaker 4: a long season to go.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I don't know. I think that's going to be a
- 4:21Speaker 3: tough task.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Very tough.
- 4:23Speaker 3: This is the first time Clemson hasn't been ranked since 2011.
- 4:25Speaker 5: I looked this up. That was Dabba's third year and
- 4:29Speaker 5: their quarterback. Taj Boyd was in his first year. They
- 4:32Speaker 5: weren't ranked that year. They won the ACC and just
- 4:35Speaker 5: started this incredible run. But I'll be honest, what bothers
- 4:38Speaker 5: me about Dabo a little bit, now he's asking his
- 4:41Speaker 5: donors for NIL money.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Four years late.
- 4:43Speaker 5: He convinced them that you don't need NIL to compete.
- 4:46Speaker 5: And now he's saying, I guess we do. You mentioned it.
- 4:50Speaker 5: I think he's in trouble.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Well, a 7-6 season last year, you get one of those.
- 4:53Speaker 4: If you get a couple national titles, you get one
- 4:55Speaker 4: of those. Ask Gene Chizik years ago at Auburn. how
- 4:58Speaker 4: long your hall pass is. But what's interesting about LSU
- 5:02Speaker 4: is they're going the route of Sam Levitt, the ASU quarterback,
- 5:05Speaker 4: good-looking kid. Jane Daniels did this. He went from ASU
- 5:08Speaker 4: to LSU to the pros.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:10Speaker 5: And they got Jordan Seaton left tackle out of Colorado.
- 5:13Speaker 5: They got a lot of prize recruits all over the field.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I love Sam Levitt. Our buddy Tom McShay, former ESPN
- 5:20Speaker 5: draft guru, he thinks Sam Levin might be the best
- 5:22Speaker 5: quarterback in college football.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Not only just the best quarterback this year, the best
- 5:26Speaker 3: pro prospect.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Warm take.
- 5:27Speaker 5: We'll see, but Lane Kiffin offenses. I mean, any quarterback
- 5:30Speaker 5: can look good there. I think he's going to be great.
- 5:32Speaker 4: All right, we've got other games this weekend, Pearl. Your
- 5:34Speaker 4: Louisville squad versus Ole Miss. Trinidad Chambliss is back, the quarterback.
- 5:38Speaker 4: They're a very root-for-able team, Ole Miss. You've got to
- 5:41Speaker 4: like them. And then you've got Wisconsin versus Notre Dame.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Notre Dame is a big favorite in this game. Wisconsin
- 5:46Speaker 4: football is not what it used to be. But Notre Dame,
- 5:49Speaker 4: the schedule is getting joked on a little bit. It's like, hey,
- 5:52Speaker 4: this schedule is non-threatening, except for that Miami game in
- 5:55Speaker 4: early November. Notre Dame is good for one trip-up game
- 5:59Speaker 4: about every three years. You don't want it to be
- 6:00Speaker 4: this one. You don't want to open the season with
- 6:02Speaker 4: this one.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Well, I mean, they start out slow a lot. And
- 6:05Speaker 3: they've made the mistake.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Last year, they put A & M and Miami on
- 6:08Speaker 5: their schedule. This is a much better start. But you
- 6:11Speaker 5: know how scheduling works. They did not know Wisconsin would
- 6:13Speaker 5: be down.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Right. That's a good point. This game was scheduled four
- 6:16Speaker 4: seasons ago when they had 10 wins at Wisconsin.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I was the guy last year.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Remember the debate? Should Notre Dame get in with two losses?
- 6:24Speaker 5: I was a guy who was against it. I don't
- 6:26Speaker 5: like their schedule.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I'll be honest. I'm a little frustrated.
- 6:28Speaker 5: We're going into week one. I wish there were more
- 6:30Speaker 5: marquee matchups. Remember last year we had Ohio State-Texas? Wisconsin-Notre
- 6:34Speaker 5: Dame is not quite doing it for me.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yeah, and Notre Dame-Michigan went away for a while. Notre
- 6:37Speaker 4: Dame-USC is going to be on a bit of a hiatus.
- 6:39Speaker 4: So some of those premier games have gone away.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell you though, Louisville. I've been talking off-air
- 6:45Speaker 5: about them. Everyone's talking about Ole Miss, of course. The
- 6:48Speaker 5: feel-good team, Trinidad-Chamliss.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Is Louisville your Indiana team?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Well, they're in the 20s.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Indiana was ranked a little higher than me the last year,
- 6:57Speaker 5: but they got a quarterback, Lincoln Kienholz, who was the
- 6:59Speaker 5: backup at Ohio State.
- 7:00Speaker 3: And every time he got in, he dominated.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Now, of course, Ohio State was up 38 to nothing
- 7:04Speaker 5: when he got in. So there was a good reason.
- 7:06Speaker 5: They have a running back in Isaac Brown. But that's
- 7:08Speaker 5: the way college football is. In the NIL era right now,
- 7:11Speaker 5: you don't know where the great teams are going to
- 7:13Speaker 5: come from.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:14Speaker 4: You could redo your team just like, you know, Kurt
- 7:16Speaker 4: Cignetti at Indiana. He brought all those kids over from
- 7:18Speaker 4: James Madison. He redid his team instantly.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 4: IU's quarterback, Josh Hoover, former TCU transfer. Not so much
- 7:26Speaker 4: pressure on him week one, but it's going to be
- 7:27Speaker 4: interesting to see Indiana football. Do they come out steamrolling
- 7:30Speaker 4: like they did last year?
- 7:32Speaker 5: It's funny because Josh Hoover, everyone's like, well, Fernando Mendoza
- 7:35Speaker 5: did it last year, so Josh Hoover's got to do
- 7:37Speaker 5: it this year.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It's not that big a sample size, Paul.
- 7:39Speaker 4: It's such a weird world we're in in college football,
- 7:41Speaker 4: like Can Indiana repeat? Did you ever think you'd ever
- 7:44Speaker 4: say the phrase, would Indiana football repeat as national title holders?
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we've had a lot of experts on
- 7:49Speaker 5: this week, and everybody's high on Indiana this year.
- 7:51Speaker 3: It's not like, well, they lost the number one pick.
- 7:54Speaker 3: They did lose Fernando Mendoza.
- 7:55Speaker 4: A lot of skill position players are back. A lot
- 7:57Speaker 4: of defenders are back. Coming up later, are we doing
- 7:59Speaker 4: our national picks now, national title picks now or later?
- 8:02Speaker 3: I want to save it, Paul. You're saving it. And
- 8:04Speaker 3: I'm a little worried. We have not revealed it to
- 8:06Speaker 3: each other.
- 8:06Speaker 4: No, we never reveal.
- 8:07Speaker 5: So what would happen if we had the same exact
- 8:09Speaker 5: national title game? Would we have to pivot off of that?
- 8:11Speaker 4: Is that bad TV?
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I mean, we do think alike on some things, but
- 8:15Speaker 5: not on other things.
- 8:16Speaker 4: What about Heisman picks? Are those coming later?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:19Speaker 5: And that I know we're going different because I am
- 8:20Speaker 5: going way off the board for.
- 8:22Speaker 3: My Heisman pick.
- 8:23Speaker 4: A lot coming up today. A lot coming up today.
- 8:25Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:26Speaker 5: In the college football world, there's a lot of drama
- 8:28Speaker 5: down in Chapel Hill, of course. We'll get into the
- 8:31Speaker 5: North Carolina story, and I have a.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Great analogy for Bill Belichick. That's next. Not so fast.
- 8:38Speaker 4: All right, Perloff, here we go. Midday pick-me-up. You are
- 8:43Speaker 4: going to love this. I know I'm about to love this.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Caleb Williams at the Cub game. PCA saying hi to
- 8:50Speaker 4: his friend. Hey, pal.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Hey, buddy.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Oh, come on.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Caleb Wilson of the Bulls, the rookie. Matis Bouzelis of
- 8:56Speaker 4: the Bills.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Oh, I know you're a huge Chicago fan.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Are you going to get a poster of this in
- 9:00Speaker 5: your room if that's what's happening right here?
- 9:02Speaker 6: A poster?
- 9:03Speaker 4: I would like to wallpaper my living room with this photo.
- 9:05Speaker 5: That is such a surefire win when a guy from
- 9:08Speaker 5: one team goes to the game in another sport.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Oh, look at that.
- 9:12Speaker 4: It's burning my retinas as a Chicago guy.
- 9:15Speaker 5: By the way, about half of those guys haven't proven
- 9:16Speaker 5: anything yet. I don't know what you guys are so
- 9:18Speaker 5: excited about.
- 9:19Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 9:19Speaker 4: PCA, Caleb's and Caleb's.
- 9:21Speaker 3: They're all there. They're all there.
- 9:22Speaker 4: All right, welcome back to Not So Fast. Dan Patrick
- 9:24Speaker 4: will be joining us in 15 minutes right here in
- 9:26Speaker 4: the big seat. And the UMass head coach will be
- 9:29Speaker 4: joining us after the Rutgers win. It's time for Warm Takes.
- 9:32Speaker 4: You'll love it. It's sweeping the nation. Day five.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Here we go, Pearl.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I'm going to go first. Ready? Soak this one in.
- 9:39Speaker 4: When in the heck did Indiana become a football state? Yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 4: I know Notre Dame. They've been there for a long time.
- 9:43Speaker 4: But even Notre Dame went down for a couple years
- 9:46Speaker 4: here and there. Indiana football is a defending national title.
- 9:49Speaker 4: They won the Heisman last year at Mendoza. They've got
- 9:52Speaker 4: a chance to repeat. They're a top 10 team, not
- 9:54Speaker 4: a fluke team, And they're right back in it. Notre
- 9:57Speaker 4: Dame is in the title picture again, and it's going
- 9:59Speaker 4: to be perennially. Marcus Freeman passed on the NFL to
- 10:03Speaker 4: stay at Notre Dame multiple times. This state is just
- 10:06Speaker 4: running college football. This used to be the state of
- 10:08Speaker 4: Bob Knight, the state of John Wooden. This used to
- 10:10Speaker 4: be a pure college basketball state. Now, Purdue has some
- 10:13Speaker 4: catching up to do, but Kurt Cignetti could run for governor.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Marcus Freeman's is staying at Notre Dame over multiple NFL offers.
- 10:20Speaker 4: This is a great time to be a sports fan
- 10:22Speaker 4: in Indiana, but football more than basketball, it's a little odd.
- 10:27Speaker 5: What if Hoosiers 2 was actually a football movie and
- 10:30Speaker 5: not a basketball movie? No football school this small has
- 10:33Speaker 5: ever won the state title.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Right, Hoosiers 2. We talked about this last year, you
- 10:36Speaker 4: and I. We said Hoosiers 2 is the Indiana football story.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I don't think I talked about that because that's terrible.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I texted you 10 times and you didn't respond.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That is so weird, too.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Is Kentucky next or are we going to get other
- 10:47Speaker 5: basketball powers to get.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Good at football?
- 10:49Speaker 4: Or are you going to be like Florida where you
- 10:50Speaker 4: do both?
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah, easier said than done. All right, I'm going to
- 10:53Speaker 3: go to my warm take.
- 10:55Speaker 5: Not quite as positive down in Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
- 10:59Speaker 5: where Bill Belichick and the program has gotten in a
- 11:01Speaker 5: lot of trouble. I was looking back at when Belichick
- 11:04Speaker 5: first got there. There was a great column in The
- 11:06Speaker 5: Athletic saying, Bill Belichick will be no Rodney Dangerfield in
- 11:09Speaker 5: the movie Back to School. Now, if you're too young
- 11:11Speaker 5: and you don't know Back to School, homework, watch it.
- 11:14Speaker 5: It's a great movie. Rodney goes back to college and
- 11:17Speaker 5: lives it up. Now, for that headline, turns out Belichick
- 11:21Speaker 5: is more Rodney Dangerfield than Rodney Dangerfield himself in the movie.
- 11:25Speaker 5: He took over a program at North Carolina, and all
- 11:28Speaker 5: we have right now is reports of sex, drugs, and
- 11:30Speaker 5: rock and roll.
- 11:31Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 11:33Speaker 5: The story about Bill Belichick in North Carolina shocked me
- 11:36Speaker 5: because he always ran a very tight ship in Foxborough,
- 11:40Speaker 5: and now it seems.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Like anything goes in North Carolina.
- 11:43Speaker 5: And Rodney, in the movie, dated an English professor, I believe,
- 11:46Speaker 5: played by Sally Kellerman.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Good call.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Bill's dating a 25-year-old. So he's ahead of Rodney in
- 11:52Speaker 5: that sense. It's unbelievable what has happened to this program.
- 11:56Speaker 5: And I'd really like a true documentary of what the
- 11:58Speaker 5: day-to-day for Bill Belichick is like.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It seems like a lot of fun.
- 12:02Speaker 5: He's enjoying himself. Now, in the movie Back to School,
- 12:06Speaker 5: of course, Rodney Dangerfield ended the movie with the Triple Lindy.
- 12:08Speaker 5: You know what the Triple Lindy is.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Of course.
- 12:10Speaker 5: It was a dive. It was an athletic feat. Belichick's
- 12:14Speaker 5: version of the Triple Lindy would be actually getting to
- 12:16Speaker 5: the college football playoff. That would be an incredible feat
- 12:19Speaker 5: for this program. Listen, they won 15-10, I believe, over
- 12:23Speaker 5: TCU in opening week.
- 12:25Speaker 3: So there's a chance.
- 12:26Speaker 5: But I feel like it's a kind of cinematic quality
- 12:29Speaker 5: down there. And if it's like back to school, Belichick
- 12:32Speaker 5: is going to make the college football playoff and walk
- 12:35Speaker 5: it off in the sunset with Jordan Hudson. It's going
- 12:37Speaker 5: to be an incredible ball.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Bravo. If there was a warm take chain, I'd give
- 12:40Speaker 4: it to you. That was the warm take of the
- 12:42Speaker 4: week on Not So Fast. I yield the floor to
- 12:43Speaker 4: this one. I admire it. To work Bill Belichick and
- 12:46Speaker 4: Rodney Dangerfield in a warm take, I love it. Look,
- 12:49Speaker 4: I'm going to give you this lovely NBC Sports vintage mug.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Wow, look at that.
- 12:54Speaker 4: It is a great point, but I think what Dan
- 12:56Speaker 4: Patrick said earlier today on the Dan Patrick Show was,
- 12:58Speaker 4: can Bill Belichick win his way out of this? And
- 13:00Speaker 4: usually in sports you can. Now, Bill has an off
- 13:03Speaker 4: week this week, but UNC has Clemson in three weeks
- 13:06Speaker 4: and Notre Dame in four weeks. If somehow, and don't
- 13:09Speaker 4: say never, we don't say that on this show, if
- 13:11Speaker 4: somehow he beats Clemson and he beats Notre Dame... The
- 13:14Speaker 4: hype is back in a rush. If he loses both
- 13:17Speaker 4: of those, it's open season.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Can he hurt his pro legacy by what happens here?
- 13:22Speaker 6: I would hope not.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I really hope it doesn't. Like him not getting the
- 13:24Speaker 4: Hall of Fame on first ballot is one of the
- 13:26Speaker 4: nuttier things that's ever happened in football history. Because if
- 13:29Speaker 4: Bill Belichick's not first ballot as a coach, that means
- 13:31Speaker 4: there will be no more first ballot head coaches.
- 13:33Speaker 3: No, of course he should get in.
- 13:35Speaker 5: I saw the Hall of Fame just this hour, I believe,
- 13:37Speaker 5: change their criteria.
- 13:38Speaker 4: To put Bill in?
- 13:40Speaker 5: Basically, yeah, because Belichick obviously deserves it. They could argue
- 13:44Speaker 5: he's going back to the NFL. I think that ship
- 13:46Speaker 5: has sailed.
- 13:46Speaker 4: All right, my next warm take is this, and this
- 13:48Speaker 4: is an NSF PSA, here we go, PDQ. One thing
- 13:52Speaker 4: we like to do on NSF is tailgate. We like
- 13:55Speaker 4: to tailgate and watch college football and see college football
- 13:57Speaker 4: in person. Here's my tip for you. This weekend, it's
- 14:00Speaker 4: 72 degrees pretty much everywhere. Go watch a local college
- 14:03Speaker 4: football game. We can't all live in Baton Rouge or Eugene.
- 14:06Speaker 2: You've been there.
- 14:06Speaker 4: You can't live in Austin, Texas. Go see a small
- 14:09Speaker 4: college football game. Go to Weber State versus Southern Utah.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I've been there. Go see Carroll at St.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Norbert.
- 14:14Speaker 4: I've been there as well. Go see Illinois College at Elmhurst.
- 14:18Speaker 4: There's lots of small college football, Division II, FCS, Division III, NAIA,
- 14:23Speaker 4: NA whatever. Just go roll up. It costs nothing to park.
- 14:26Speaker 4: You can tailgate anywhere you want. You walk in, you
- 14:29Speaker 4: pay five bucks or less, and you go see some
- 14:31Speaker 4: real college football. If you get some vitamin D on you,
- 14:33Speaker 4: get a brat in your belly, and go watch some
- 14:35Speaker 4: college football. You'll feel better about yourself. And then take
- 14:38Speaker 4: a picture. Send in your picture. Best one makes the
- 14:39Speaker 4: air this weekend.
- 14:40Speaker 5: How are the tailgates at some of these games?
- 14:42Speaker 4: Surprisingly good. A little old school. You know I like
- 14:44Speaker 4: to go to the Yale tailgate. A little bougie, a
- 14:47Speaker 4: lot of plaid. Army football, there's a prime one this weekend.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Army football redid their football stadium, and it is Gorge
- 14:53Speaker 4: on the Hudson. You've been there.
- 14:55Speaker 5: I've actually never been there. Dan said that's just one
- 14:57Speaker 5: of his favorite places to watch a game.
- 14:59Speaker 4: You may be under orders to go see Mikey Stadium
- 15:01Speaker 4: this weekend, but Army football is an experience. As an American,
- 15:04Speaker 4: as a football fan, please go.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Okay, Paul, I'm in.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Let's turn our attention to the NFL draft. It's a
- 15:11Speaker 5: year and a half away. Obviously too early to really
- 15:14Speaker 5: be talking about it, but you know how the websites
- 15:15Speaker 5: put out their mock drafts. I just want to warn you,
- 15:18Speaker 5: if you're reading a too early mock draft, this is
- 15:20Speaker 5: a mock draft, Paul, from last year, this exact week.
- 15:24Speaker 5: ESPN put out a mock draft and they had six
- 15:27Speaker 5: quarterbacks in their first round. Starting with Arch Manning, Lenore Sellers,
- 15:31Speaker 5: Kate Klubnick, Sam Levitt, Drew Aller, and Garrett Nussmeyer. Obviously,
- 15:35Speaker 5: the actual picks were not those guys.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Fernando Mendoza.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Those weren't the actual picks.
- 15:40Speaker 3: No.
- 15:40Speaker 5: And Ty Simpson. Arch came back. Lenore came back. Klubnick
- 15:43Speaker 5: is a jet. Sam Levitt's down at LSU. Drew Aller,
- 15:46Speaker 5: promising camp and sealer. Garrett Nussmeyer, late-round pick. So you
- 15:50Speaker 5: never know. We thought these guys were sure things. Now,
- 15:53Speaker 5: this year, there's a lot of potential sure things, Paul.
- 15:55Speaker 5: You've got Dante Moore, Arch Manning, C.J.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Carr.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Lenore Sellers is still there. Messamaker, Chambliss, Mensah, Leavitt. You
- 16:04Speaker 5: go down there, there's a lot of potential NFL quarterbacks.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Just don't jump to any conclusions. The season has to
- 16:09Speaker 5: play out. I love getting excited about guys. I'm all
- 16:13Speaker 5: about that.
- 16:13Speaker 3: But do not overdo it right now because we have
- 16:16Speaker 3: no idea.
- 16:17Speaker 4: I do like looking back at August mock drafts. You
- 16:19Speaker 4: used to do a mock draft. Two days after the
- 16:22Speaker 4: draft years ago, and it was always a good time.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it was fun. Was it accurate? No. Didn't work
- 16:27Speaker 3: out sometimes. As I recall, Ryan Mallett did not go
- 16:29Speaker 3: number one overall.
- 16:30Speaker 4: We're still checking on that. He should have. All right,
- 16:32Speaker 4: let's get to a little NFL preview. You've got NFL
- 16:34Speaker 4: in five days on a Wednesday. Don't sleep on that.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Let's go to the AFC North here on Not So Fast.
- 16:39Speaker 4: AFC North, Perloff. And we're going to do this a
- 16:41Speaker 4: little fun way.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I'm going to ask you the threat level of the
- 16:44Speaker 4: following teams. Threat level means chance to get to the
- 16:46Speaker 4: Super Bowl and then riff and tell me what you think.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Starting with the Ravens.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Oh.
- 16:51Speaker 3: A serious threat.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Jesse Minter is going to make that defense pretty, pretty good.
- 16:56Speaker 5: But the offense is a difference to me. Declan Doyle,
- 16:59Speaker 5: new offensive coordinator, paired with Lamar Jackson. Lamar said the
- 17:02Speaker 5: NFL has no idea what's coming. And I think he's
- 17:05Speaker 5: really mad about last year. He had a hamstring injury.
- 17:07Speaker 5: I think their offense is going.
- 17:09Speaker 3: To be scary. The problem is injuries.
- 17:11Speaker 4: The Bengals were in the Super Bowl a couple years ago.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I don't know if they've cooled on them, but I
- 17:15Speaker 4: think they've been burned by the Joe Burrow injuries. I
- 17:17Speaker 4: think everyone likes the Bengals, but not secure enough to
- 17:20Speaker 4: put them in the Super Bowl.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Where are you on that?
- 17:22Speaker 5: I think people are jumping back on that Bengals bandwagon.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Dexter Lawrence on defense. Finally, they spend on defense. It's been, God,
- 17:29Speaker 5: I don't know, their entire existence. They never really wanted
- 17:31Speaker 5: to spend. Now they're spending.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Joe Burrow. Have you watched any Joe Burrow interviews? He
- 17:35Speaker 3: looks pretty focused.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Hair looks good.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Hair looks amazing. By the way, he looks focused. I
- 17:39Speaker 3: think Joe Burrow is probably always focused. But I don't know.
- 17:42Speaker 5: He seems like he's on a revenge tour as well.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Those two teams, the Ravens and the Bengals, I expect
- 17:47Speaker 5: them to make a lot of noise.
- 17:48Speaker 4: OK, every year the Steelers are good, not great. They're
- 17:51Speaker 4: never bad. It's a very weird team as far as
- 17:53Speaker 4: like they're never embarrassing. They never have a top five pick.
- 17:56Speaker 4: But it feels also lately that it's been a while
- 17:58Speaker 4: since they've been threatening. Are they Super Bowl threatening or
- 18:01Speaker 4: first round playoff exit threatening?
- 18:03Speaker 3: Oh, gosh.
- 18:04Speaker 5: I have some friends in Pittsburgh. They're so sick of
- 18:06Speaker 5: limbo where they get to the playoffs and.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Then lose in the first half.
- 18:09Speaker 4: And you don't draft high.
- 18:10Speaker 5: And you never draft high. Then you've got to take
- 18:11Speaker 5: a Kenny pick at 21.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Now, Tomlin's gone. Tomlin seemed to be coaching 2, 10,
- 18:16Speaker 3: and 7.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I am not so convinced that Aaron Rodgers last year
- 18:21Speaker 5: is going to be a good one. You know, the
- 18:23Speaker 5: last year of a quarterback is always bad, Paul.
- 18:25Speaker 3: We know that. Even Brady didn't play well his last year.
- 18:27Speaker 4: You know, I will say looking at the schedule, Falcons...
- 18:31Speaker 4: You know, you've got the Browns, you've got the Colts,
- 18:33Speaker 4: you've got Tampa. You could pile up a few wins early.
- 18:35Speaker 3: You're at New England, you're at Philly.
- 18:37Speaker 4: I left those out.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I noticed you left those out. Yes, you could
- 18:40Speaker 5: pile up a few wins to get to 10-7. I
- 18:42Speaker 5: think it's the same team we've seen over the last decade.
- 18:44Speaker 4: But are the Steelers in good shape quarterback-wise going forward
- 18:47Speaker 4: because they know exactly what they have with Aaron Rodgers,
- 18:49Speaker 4: and it's last year, no money invested. They got no
- 18:53Speaker 4: money invested at all with the position.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Well, what happens if they're 10-7 and they pick 20th again?
- 18:58Speaker 5: And then they miss out on all these guys that
- 18:59Speaker 5: we talked about earlier.
- 19:00Speaker 4: At least Aaron Rodgers won't be back. At least we
- 19:02Speaker 4: say so for now. The last team in the division,
- 19:04Speaker 4: we talked about them, the Browns. Is there any threat
- 19:06Speaker 4: level for the Browns?
- 19:07Speaker 3: No, certainly not. You know what's funny?
- 19:09Speaker 5: Except for quarterback, they've stacked talent all around the roster,
- 19:13Speaker 5: which makes me think this is a good plan. Their
- 19:15Speaker 5: quarterback's playing college football this weekend, and now he's got
- 19:18Speaker 5: two good receivers who are young, great defensive players. Even
- 19:21Speaker 5: though they lost Myles Garrett, they got Jared Vers back,
- 19:24Speaker 5: Carson Swessinger. I like what the Browns are doing.
- 19:26Speaker 4: As a franchise for the future.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yes, this is all about 2029.
- 19:32Speaker 6: Beautiful.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Got that to look forward to if you're in Cleveland.
- 19:34Speaker 4: All right, nice job, Pearl, on the AFC. Look at that,
- 19:37Speaker 4: AFC North. All right, coming up next, our buddy Dan
- 19:40Speaker 4: Patrick stops guy. He's the one that made this all happen.
- 19:42Speaker 4: He's going to chop it up with us. And coming
- 19:44Speaker 4: up in a little bit, the head coach of UMass football.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Stick around. This is Not So Fast. Passing Pearl off.
- 19:50Speaker 7: Back.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Pabst. Now, Paul, I
- 19:53Speaker 5: don't know if we get credit for this booking, but
- 19:56Speaker 5: we got a big one right now.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I walked him down the hall, so I get one
- 19:58Speaker 4: point for this one.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker 3: I have a full introduction, by the way. I did
- 20:02Speaker 3: some research.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I don't think we need a full introduction. I mean,
- 20:05Speaker 2: you can, but I.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Well, I don't think you even remember all these, but
- 20:08Speaker 5: I have some information on our guest, Dan Patrick. Three-time
- 20:11Speaker 5: Marconi Award winner, two-time National Sportscaster of the Year, 12-time
- 20:15Speaker 5: Emmy nominee, according to IMDb, Cable Ace Award winner.
- 20:18Speaker 3: We don't talk about that enough. No.
- 20:21Speaker 5: National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame. He brought us
- 20:23Speaker 5: down to North Carolina. Radio Hall of Fame brought us
- 20:25Speaker 5: to Chicago. You know him, you love him, Dan Patrick. Dan,
- 20:28Speaker 5: did you have those numbers memorized? Did you know how
- 20:30Speaker 5: many Emmy nominations? No.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 5: You have 39 acting credits.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I'm sure you can't name everyone.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I cannot.
- 20:36Speaker 7: I was asked that the other day. Can I name
- 20:38Speaker 7: all of the Sandler movies I've been in? I go,
- 20:41Speaker 7: it sounds arrogant that I don't remember how many movies
- 20:44Speaker 7: I've been in, but I'm shooting Grown Ups 3 a
- 20:49Speaker 7: week from Monday.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Which is more nerve-wracking, being maybe on their first time
- 20:53Speaker 4: on a real movie set, like a real movie, or
- 20:55Speaker 4: giving out the Super Bowl trophy the first time?
- 20:58Speaker 7: I've never been as nervous as I was with the movie,
- 21:01Speaker 7: Just Go With It, when I was up there with
- 21:03Speaker 7: Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman, because they're actresses. And I
- 21:09Speaker 7: kept thinking, how long is it going to take before
- 21:11Speaker 7: they realize that I can't act? And that was, in
- 21:14Speaker 7: the back of my mind, I kept thinking, can I
- 21:16Speaker 7: continue this ruse? And Nicole Kidman saw right through me
- 21:21Speaker 7: right away. Aniston, I think, pulled Sandler to the side
- 21:24Speaker 7: and might have said, is he an actor? And if
- 21:28Speaker 7: she did, she had every right to say that.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Is he an actor?
- 21:33Speaker 4: You were nice enough to take us to that premiere.
- 21:35Speaker 4: We were in a darkened studio, and you were there
- 21:36Speaker 4: as well. And after the movie, do you remember what
- 21:39Speaker 4: I did?
- 21:40Speaker 7: I was on the end row, and you walked up,
- 21:44Speaker 7: and I think you hugged me.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I gave you a hug in a darkened theater. And
- 21:48Speaker 4: in all seriousness, not trying to blow smoke. I was like,
- 21:50Speaker 4: that's a tough room to be in with Aniston. I mean, that's...
- 21:54Speaker 4: That's some high-end actors.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Dave Matthews was in that.
- 21:57Speaker 6: But it was fun.
- 21:57Speaker 4: When you did the big country line, and I know
- 22:00Speaker 4: you did that off the cuff, that got the whole
- 22:02Speaker 4: theater left at big country. And that's why I was
- 22:04Speaker 4: really proud of you. I thought that was where, like, whoa,
- 22:07Speaker 4: you're keeping up with some heavy hitters.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Sandler let me improvise.
- 22:10Speaker 7: So Sandler sits out in the audience, and then we
- 22:14Speaker 7: do our scene up on stage. And then I stopped
- 22:19Speaker 7: at one point and Sandler yells out in front of everybody.
- 22:21Speaker 7: So there's 50 people in the room.
- 22:22Speaker 2: He's like, Danny, Danny, ad lib, ad lib.
- 22:28Speaker 7: And I go, oh, okay. And so Aniston and Kidman
- 22:32Speaker 7: are staring at me like this. And I totally ruined
- 22:35Speaker 7: the first day. And then we had to come back
- 22:37Speaker 7: for closeups the second day. And then I was able
- 22:40Speaker 7: to kind of salvage it. But I got Dave Matthews,
- 22:43Speaker 7: who's making fun of me.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And he kept going.
- 22:46Speaker 6: How tall are you?
- 22:46Speaker 2: He kept wanting to know how tall I was. How
- 22:49Speaker 2: tall are you?
- 22:50Speaker 6: How tall?
- 22:51Speaker 2: You look like you're 6'3. This is in between takes.
- 22:55Speaker 7: And I was like, man, I'm in over my skis.
- 22:59Speaker 7: But I thank Sandler for giving me a meaty role.
- 23:01Speaker 3: They put it in the movie. For some reason, he
- 23:03Speaker 3: yells out.
- 23:04Speaker 4: He goes, how tall do you think that fellow is?
- 23:05Speaker 7: He thought it was funny. And then Sandler's sitting with
- 23:08Speaker 7: him during the different takes. And they decided to put
- 23:11Speaker 7: that in.
- 23:12Speaker 5: You were pretty nervous the first time you brought the
- 23:14Speaker 5: Danettes to a movie set. I remember that day very well.
- 23:16Speaker 5: It was That's My Boy. We were shooting a prison
- 23:18Speaker 5: scene with Susan Sarandon. And you know how it got
- 23:23Speaker 5: started because there was one Danette who was not exactly
- 23:27Speaker 5: on target.
- 23:27Speaker 7: Fritzie had to carry a makeshift camera and make it
- 23:31Speaker 7: seem like he was with Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood
- 23:35Speaker 7: and I was the TV's Randall Morgan. And Fritzie, all
- 23:40Speaker 7: he had to do was have the camera fixed on
- 23:42Speaker 7: me as we're going to go meet Susan Sarandon in prison.
- 23:46Speaker 7: And Todd is walking cause he's staring at Susan Sarandon
- 23:50Speaker 7: and the camera is facing the wall.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:52Speaker 4: He's watching like this.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:55Speaker 7: And the executive producer, Jack Garaputo came out and yelled
- 23:59Speaker 7: at Fritzie in front of, he said, I gave you
- 24:02Speaker 7: one job, hold the camera and walk towards where Dan is.
- 24:06Speaker 7: And you know, Fritzie was ruined after that, of course. Uh,
- 24:10Speaker 7: But that was one of those where that's Susan Sarandon
- 24:13Speaker 7: on the other side of the prison glass. But Sandler
- 24:16Speaker 7: does that. I mean, he does empower you, enable you
- 24:19Speaker 7: and trust you. And, you know, this is, you know,
- 24:23Speaker 7: three three decades of being in movies with him.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Thanks for coming down to the show today. Now, we
- 24:29Speaker 4: when we were getting ready to get this show going today,
- 24:31Speaker 4: we saw the news break that Kathy Engelbert, the WNBA commissioner,
- 24:35Speaker 4: was announcing her retirement at the end of the year.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Not the biggest surprise of all time, but two things.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Do you love when it breaks on the air?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Oh, sure. I mean, that's life. That's what's fun. How
- 24:48Speaker 2: do you react?
- 24:49Speaker 7: What's your opinion? And can you get a guest with this?
- 24:54Speaker 7: Or what can you add? I think it was, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 7: as soon as I saw it, and I thought, okay.
- 25:01Speaker 7: I certainly have an opinion of her and, you know,
- 25:04Speaker 7: our brief interaction in Tahoe. And... getting credit for, probably
- 25:10Speaker 7: too much credit for an interview I never did, I'm
- 25:12Speaker 7: not surprised that they're moving on. I was told after
- 25:16Speaker 7: the interview didn't go down in Tahoe by somebody, I
- 25:21Speaker 7: don't want to give too much away, but they said that,
- 25:23Speaker 7: don't worry, she won't be around much longer.
- 25:27Speaker 2: So I'm not surprised.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Going back to that time in Tahoe, you talked about
- 25:30Speaker 4: it on your show a little bit earlier. When this
- 25:32Speaker 4: all went south, you know how the media reacts. I
- 25:36Speaker 4: remember you leaned over to me like this is not
- 25:37Speaker 4: going to go well for her by kind of ghosting
- 25:40Speaker 4: the show and not having maybe an underling walk over
- 25:42Speaker 4: her walk over and just have a chat with you.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Well, you can't go over to where you're hitting shots
- 25:47Speaker 7: out of a bunker, a practice facility area in Tahoe.
- 25:52Speaker 7: And I'm I'm 100 feet away. All you have to
- 25:55Speaker 7: do is walk over and say, look, I'm really sorry.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Can't do it for whatever reason. But you're not saying
- 26:00Speaker 7: anything other than PR told her not to do the interview.
- 26:05Speaker 7: after she had already agreed to do the interview, but
- 26:07Speaker 7: then nobody's ever followed up to apologize, just say, hey,
- 26:11Speaker 7: we're really sorry. Because I am a big cheerleader for
- 26:14Speaker 7: the actual game of basketball in the WNBA. I don't
- 26:18Speaker 7: care about the low-hanging fruit with the other nonsense. I
- 26:22Speaker 7: care about the actual play that I see. And I
- 26:24Speaker 7: thought this would have been great, a platform for her
- 26:26Speaker 7: to actually clear the air about all of these different topics,
- 26:31Speaker 7: and she chose not to.
- 26:33Speaker 3: You know, it's funny.
- 26:34Speaker 5: We do a lot of interviews. And afterwards, sometimes you
- 26:37Speaker 5: say to Paul, I don't know what just happened. Like
- 26:39Speaker 5: you seem to clear your slate. You went viral twice
- 26:43Speaker 5: this week. Are you aware of that?
- 26:44Speaker 3: So two interviews went viral.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin saying that he's never been to the family
- 26:49Speaker 5: gathering after in the summer.
- 26:51Speaker 3: And Pablo Torre saying, commenting on ESPN. Very viral. Hundreds
- 26:56Speaker 3: of thousands of socials.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Are you aware right afterwards what's happening outside the building
- 27:01Speaker 5: and your name is out there?
- 27:03Speaker 7: Only a couple of times. And I said to Paul,
- 27:07Speaker 7: this won't be good for the WNBA, Kathy Engelbert. I
- 27:12Speaker 7: knew in that moment. You knew that. I knew that
- 27:14Speaker 7: because everybody was ready to pounce on her anyway. And
- 27:19Speaker 7: I knew that I was kind of playing to the
- 27:22Speaker 7: masses there. But I knew that was going viral.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Did you know Tomlin was going to get an action?
- 27:27Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Did you know he was going to be that loose?
- 27:30Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 27:31Speaker 4: It felt like a body-switching movie. When he came on
- 27:33Speaker 4: the set with us, he jumps in. He goes, hey, Dan.
- 27:36Speaker 4: It felt like, where's that guy who was Mr. Stoic
- 27:38Speaker 4: for years?
- 27:39Speaker 7: I kept thinking, if he gives me Tomlin face like
- 27:41Speaker 7: he does at the press conference. And even then, there
- 27:45Speaker 7: are certain interviews where I'm really, there's trepidation the day before.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Like, God.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I'll say to Paul sometimes, like, God, I'm glad that
- 27:53Speaker 2: interview's over.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:55Speaker 7: But, you know, I mean, it's never as bad as
- 27:56Speaker 7: you think it is, but you just keep thinking, this
- 27:59Speaker 7: is live. And 99.9% of our interviews are live. You're
- 28:04Speaker 7: hoping that you get somebody who's going to tell you
- 28:06Speaker 7: something and not give you the yes or no answer.
- 28:11Speaker 7: And if he gave me Mike Tomlin's Steeler coach, that
- 28:15Speaker 7: kind of look, I'd have been in trouble.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Wait, you've handed out the Super Bowl trophy and you
- 28:18Speaker 5: still get nervous for interviews?
- 28:21Speaker 6: Well....
- 28:23Speaker 7: Yes, because I think I've applied so much pressure on,
- 28:27Speaker 7: or I've been told I'm a good interviewer.
- 28:29Speaker 2: What am I getting? And then if I don't get something,
- 28:31Speaker 2: it's like, oh, you know.
- 28:33Speaker 4: And I look at you as like you're making a
- 28:34Speaker 4: dinner for a bunch of guests and you don't want
- 28:36Speaker 4: to screw up one part of the meal. Like you
- 28:38Speaker 4: look at an interview as a start, a middle, a finish.
- 28:41Speaker 4: There's a strategy to it. The first question may end
- 28:44Speaker 4: up being the last question. And you sometimes do things
- 28:47Speaker 4: that are different. You've always done things that are different.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Like I remember one of the first times we had
- 28:52Speaker 4: Nick Saban on when he started rolling at Alabama. Nick
- 28:54Speaker 4: Saban didn't do a lot and didn't do a lot
- 28:56Speaker 4: with us. You asked him, what happens if someone parks
- 28:59Speaker 4: in your parking spot at Alabama? And Nick goes, Dan,
- 29:03Speaker 4: nobody parks in my parking spot. But if it did,
- 29:06Speaker 4: he goes, I can't even entertain that question, Dan. And
- 29:09Speaker 4: it was great because instead of saying, what do you
- 29:12Speaker 4: think is going to happen against Georgia this weekend, football talk,
- 29:15Speaker 4: you went. And then another time you asked Nick Saban,
- 29:18Speaker 4: what do you listen to on the way into work?
- 29:19Speaker 4: Or what music do you play at the lake house?
- 29:23Speaker 4: And I think he appreciated the complete randomness of those questions.
- 29:27Speaker 7: Well, I think there are times when you go, okay,
- 29:29Speaker 7: what is the first question? And I always tell people
- 29:32Speaker 7: who are doing interviews, know what your first question is
- 29:35Speaker 7: going to be and what is that leading to? And
- 29:37Speaker 7: then where do you want to go in the interview?
- 29:39Speaker 7: What's my goal in the interview? I don't want it
- 29:42Speaker 7: to be about me. I want it to be about
- 29:46Speaker 7: him giving me answers. It's not about my questions. It's
- 29:49Speaker 7: about his answers. And I think that's the fun part
- 29:52Speaker 7: because sometimes you get on a Zoom call and you'll go,
- 29:54Speaker 7: what's that behind you?
- 29:55Speaker 2: And they'll go, I don't know. And then they turn around.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Now I've got you off your mark a little bit,
- 30:00Speaker 7: which is what I want to do. I want to
- 30:02Speaker 7: have you think this is just a conversation, not an interview.
- 30:06Speaker 7: And I always I tell people when you do interviews,
- 30:08Speaker 7: have conversations, don't have interviews.
- 30:11Speaker 5: So we were looking at small pictures for an open.
- 30:14Speaker 5: I had a picture from the attic where Todd was
- 30:16Speaker 5: off in the corner back in the late 2000s. At
- 30:19Speaker 5: that moment, was this part of your plan to have
- 30:22Speaker 5: a studio?
- 30:22Speaker 3: I walked in when I first came back.
- 30:24Speaker 5: There was a podcast going on in one room. There
- 30:26Speaker 5: was a new editor in this room. It's incredible, the
- 30:29Speaker 5: activity level at the Man Cave. It's like nothing I've
- 30:32Speaker 5: ever seen over.
- 30:33Speaker 3: The last month.
- 30:33Speaker 7: Well, I knew that I wanted to have a bunch
- 30:36Speaker 7: of cameras watching the show. And it was going to
- 30:40Speaker 7: be almost like the Truman Show, that movie. A voyeuristic
- 30:44Speaker 7: watch a show being made.
- 30:45Speaker 3: And....
- 30:48Speaker 2: You know, we.
- 30:48Speaker 7: Got 13 or 14 cameras in here. And so that
- 30:52Speaker 7: was what I wanted. I didn't want to be just
- 30:54Speaker 7: in front of a camera and, you know, maybe there's
- 30:57Speaker 7: another camera angle and that's it. I wanted the Danettes
- 30:59Speaker 7: involved in it. I wanted interaction. I wanted the rec
- 31:02Speaker 7: tech grill firing up food. Do you want to play basketball?
- 31:05Speaker 2: It's there. Throw the football. It's there.
- 31:07Speaker 7: Those were the things that I was hoping for that
- 31:10Speaker 7: made it a fuller show. And then get great guests,
- 31:13Speaker 7: have fun. And I'm lucky, you know, that there's... you know,
- 31:18Speaker 7: we're familiar with each other. And that familiarity, as you
- 31:20Speaker 7: guys know, doing this show, that'll take you in rough moments,
- 31:24Speaker 7: you know, the other person has your back.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Yes.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Dan, thank you for the time here. Thank you for everything,
- 31:29Speaker 5: by the way. I didn't have a chance to say that.
- 31:31Speaker 5: But we got to move on.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Hey, this is live. It's TV.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Yeah, all right.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Do I get up now?
- 31:37Speaker 3: Stay with us.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Stay with us.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Yeah, stay with us. Coming up next, we have a
- 31:39Speaker 3: big guest.
- 31:40Speaker 5: We have the UMass head coach, Joe Harasimiak, after the
- 31:44Speaker 5: big win over Rutgers.
- 31:45Speaker 3: That's next. Not so fast.
- 31:47Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Pastor Perloff here. We are
- 31:50Speaker 4: hyped up for the college football season. Right now, we're
- 31:52Speaker 4: going to do a thing called the Feel Good. I know, Perloff,
- 31:54Speaker 4: you're asking, isn't that later in the show?
- 31:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:56Speaker 4: No, we ripped up the rundown because of what happened
- 31:58Speaker 4: last night in college football. Joining us now, fresh off
- 32:01Speaker 4: the 31-27 win last night versus Rutgers, UMass Minutemen head
- 32:05Speaker 4: coach Joe Harasimiak. Coach, we did it.
- 32:09Speaker 3: We did it.
- 32:10Speaker 6: We did it.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Yes, we did. Yes, we did.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Let's get right into it.
- 32:14Speaker 6: Great win.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Everyone's talking about the win over Rutgers for UMass. Everyone
- 32:17Speaker 4: knows the record you guys had last year. Not a
- 32:20Speaker 4: lot of wins. Don't have to get into details. Can
- 32:22Speaker 4: you take us into the pregame speech you gave your players?
- 32:26Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it's funny.
- 32:26Speaker 8: I'm actually one of those believers that the pregame speech
- 32:28Speaker 8: is kind of for the movies. So I would just
- 32:31Speaker 8: say the message all offseason, you know, throughout winter and
- 32:36Speaker 8: spring and.
- 32:37Speaker 6: Especially camp, is trying to.
- 32:38Speaker 8: Connect the team the best we could. We have a
- 32:40Speaker 8: ton of new players. We flip the roster around. But
- 32:43Speaker 8: sometimes you've got to hit rock bottom to move up.
- 32:45Speaker 8: And I think that's what we did as a program.
- 32:47Speaker 8: And just really happy for the players and our alumni.
- 32:51Speaker 6: It's a proud university.
- 32:52Speaker 8: It's a proud alumni group. And for our players to
- 32:56Speaker 8: go out there and literally dominate the entire game, hopefully
- 33:00Speaker 8: that sets a new standard here for UMass football.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Okay, Coach, taking me to the locker room at half, 24-7,
- 33:04Speaker 5: you're up.
- 33:06Speaker 3: What's the vibe? Celebratory? Nervous? What's going on?
- 33:10Speaker 8: You know, I was a little nervous because usually, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 8: coaches talk about when you're up, you're actually harder on
- 33:16Speaker 8: them than you had to be. But once again, the
- 33:18Speaker 8: players kind of took control of that. You know, it's
- 33:21Speaker 8: funny there, too. The Rutgers away locker room is like
- 33:23Speaker 8: an anchovy container. It's tight as hell, and I can't
- 33:27Speaker 8: even see everyone.
- 33:29Speaker 6: But it was good. The players let it, and.
- 33:31Speaker 8: We just talked about finishing the job, right, and just
- 33:35Speaker 8: continuing to go and creating a new standard defensively.
- 33:38Speaker 6: But I really didn't have to say much.
- 33:40Speaker 8: I told them in the Friday night team meeting that, listen,
- 33:43Speaker 8: you guys are like a bunch of wind-up toys.
- 33:45Speaker 6: I think you're ready.
- 33:45Speaker 8: I'll wind you up, and now I've got to get
- 33:47Speaker 8: out of the way. I think that's what the best
- 33:48Speaker 8: coaches I've been around, just get out of their way.
- 33:50Speaker 8: You've prepared them up to this point, and then they've
- 33:52Speaker 8: got to go play.
- 33:53Speaker 4: So, Coach, you're on the sidelines in the second half,
- 33:55Speaker 4: and this is the first game last night. It got
- 33:58Speaker 4: all over social media. People were tweeting out, turn on
- 34:00Speaker 4: Rutgers versus UMass. UMass is going to pull up the
- 34:02Speaker 4: stunner of the season, even though it's the first week
- 34:04Speaker 4: of the season. It's all playing out. What's going through
- 34:07Speaker 4: your mind as the seconds are ticking off the clock?
- 34:11Speaker 8: Well, up until the last drive, because they had a
- 34:15Speaker 8: couple of explosives. I've been there before, so I was
- 34:18Speaker 8: probably coaching harder than I ever have in my life
- 34:21Speaker 8: for the last eight minutes of that game.
- 34:24Speaker 6: But you know what?
- 34:25Speaker 8: The players gave me confidence that we were in the
- 34:27Speaker 8: right mindset. But certainly, you know, your mind races. You
- 34:31Speaker 8: get distracted and you kind of go to where your
- 34:33Speaker 8: mind's going to go.
- 34:35Speaker 6: But just trying to stay in the moment.
- 34:36Speaker 8: But certainly, you know, the alumni and the fans that
- 34:39Speaker 8: were behind us, I mean, there was basically no one
- 34:41Speaker 8: left there. And it was just a bunch of UMass chants. And,
- 34:44Speaker 8: you know, I'm from New Jersey. My parents were there,
- 34:46Speaker 8: my two brothers, my hometown. I grew up like an
- 34:49Speaker 8: hour away. So it was pretty cool. But I had
- 34:51Speaker 8: to stay focused on just making sure we finished the game.
- 34:54Speaker 5: So, Coach, I can ask this because you won, but
- 34:56Speaker 5: you were at Rutgers when wide receiver K.J.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Duff got there.
- 34:59Speaker 5: So I thought as a former D.C. you would have
- 35:02Speaker 5: a plan for him. Apparently not, because he was a problem.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Talk about K.J. Duff, and it seemed like you let
- 35:09Speaker 5: him feed last night and focused on stopping other parts
- 35:11Speaker 5: of the game.
- 35:13Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I was there when K.J. was a
- 35:15Speaker 8: freshman coming in, and he was a big-time recruit. And
- 35:18Speaker 8: then obviously right away, I mean, you just saw that
- 35:20Speaker 8: he was going to be different. Um, so, you know,
- 35:22Speaker 8: we had a plan, we doubled them a lot, second
- 35:24Speaker 8: and third quarter. Um, you know, he's like, we, we
- 35:27Speaker 8: talked all week in the defense staff and to our team,
- 35:29Speaker 8: like eight's going to get his right.
- 35:32Speaker 6: Three, probably going to get his, but if we.
- 35:33Speaker 8: Can stop the run against the Rutgers offense, where I've
- 35:36Speaker 8: had familiarity with that, that's, what's going to set us up.
- 35:38Speaker 8: So I think we, I think 35 rushes for 40 yards.
- 35:42Speaker 8: I mean, if we can make them one dimensional, so
- 35:43Speaker 8: we doubled them a lot.
- 35:44Speaker 6: Second, third quarter.
- 35:45Speaker 8: If you kind of look at it, first quarter, fourth quarter.
- 35:47Speaker 8: You know, at the end of the game, they're beating
- 35:49Speaker 8: up three scores. It was like, hey, let's bleed the
- 35:51Speaker 8: clock a little bit. I mean, fourth and 13. I mean,
- 35:53Speaker 8: that was ridiculous catch, you know, but he's just so
- 35:56Speaker 8: big and his body. He has great body control. So
- 36:00Speaker 8: he puts you he gets like a balmy man relationship
- 36:04Speaker 8: and get your defender on the backside. So that's why
- 36:05Speaker 8: it's so hard to get around him. But yeah, I'm
- 36:08Speaker 8: glad we more than likely don't face.
- 36:10Speaker 6: Anyone like him for the entire year.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Coach, I know we've got to get you out of here.
- 36:13Speaker 4: You've got film session coming up with your players. That's
- 36:15Speaker 4: going to be the most fun film session you've ever
- 36:17Speaker 4: been part of. I'm calling my shop right now. Two things.
- 36:20Speaker 4: On the way out of town, Rutgers had fireworks planned
- 36:22Speaker 4: for the postgame celebration. Did you guys see the fireworks? Secondly,
- 36:26Speaker 4: your program got paid $ 1. 55 million to go in there
- 36:30Speaker 4: and take care of business. They don't give you the
- 36:31Speaker 4: check on the field. Is that direct deposit? What's the
- 36:33Speaker 4: story there?
- 36:34Speaker 6: No, yeah, it is not like... Happy Gilmore, give me
- 36:37Speaker 6: the check. No, it is not. I wish it was.
- 36:40Speaker 8: That would be kind of cool. But, yeah, you guys
- 36:43Speaker 8: have probably seen it. We had a little firework mishap
- 36:45Speaker 8: last year, so it was good to get the fireworks
- 36:47Speaker 8: flipped on the other side. But, yeah, and to your point,
- 36:50Speaker 8: this film session will be awesome, and then we've got
- 36:54Speaker 8: to move forward and get on to the next one.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Coach, thanks a lot. You've got big stuff coming up.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Enjoy the season. Enjoy being the story of the day
- 37:00Speaker 4: because it happens so rarely in sports. It's great having
- 37:02Speaker 4: you on the show.
- 37:03Speaker 5: That's a program changer, that win, and he is– Young
- 37:06Speaker 5: coach there is a bright future. I'm glad that I
- 37:08Speaker 5: think he's a friend of the show too.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Friend of the show. UMass football. We've always been fans
- 37:13Speaker 4: of UMass football. Really fun to have him on. We'll
- 37:15Speaker 4: keep an eye on that story.
- 37:16Speaker 3: That was great.
- 37:17Speaker 6: I love there.
- 37:17Speaker 4: There's fireworks going on, but we're going to talk a
- 37:20Speaker 4: little Heisman trophy right there. Did you see me throwing
- 37:22Speaker 4: out the Heisman pose there in that graphic? That's what
- 37:24Speaker 4: we do every week here. We're going to do getting
- 37:25Speaker 4: the Heisman. Perloff and I got the Heisman a lot
- 37:28Speaker 4: in college. If you know what I mean, you know
- 37:29Speaker 4: what I mean? Let's get to it. I'm going to
- 37:31Speaker 4: start a little bit with the odds and there's different
- 37:33Speaker 4: odds on different places. You've got C.J. Carr of Notre Dame.
- 37:36Speaker 4: You've got Arch Manning. You've got Dante Moore of Oregon.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Darian Mensah. Julian Sane of Ohio State. Trinidad Chambliss. Jeremiah Smith.
- 37:44Speaker 4: That's kind of the upper tier. Josh Hoover of IU
- 37:47Speaker 4: is in that mix. Then it drops a lot. Early
- 37:49Speaker 4: thoughts on the highs.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Wow, there's a ton of quarterbacks this year.
- 37:52Speaker 5: There's so many. We talked about the potential draftees. That's
- 37:55Speaker 5: even more. Trinidad Chambliss might not be an NFL player,
- 37:58Speaker 5: but he's going to be awesome in college. His numbers
- 38:00Speaker 5: were great. I kind of like the dual threat guys
- 38:03Speaker 5: like Chambliss, maybe Lenore Sellers. You know, the pocket quarterbacks
- 38:08Speaker 5: get big numbers, but I think for Heisman this year,
- 38:10Speaker 5: you're going to need huge numbers.
- 38:11Speaker 4: And you know the Heisman, the Heisman. You have to
- 38:13Speaker 4: have a story. Trinidad, the analyst of Ole Miss has
- 38:15Speaker 4: a story. He's been there forever. I think he started
- 38:17Speaker 4: at Ferris State, for God's sakes. But, like, he got
- 38:20Speaker 4: spurned by Lane Kiffin. Ole Miss is a feel-good team.
- 38:23Speaker 4: If they take down LSU on national TV, Trinidad and
- 38:26Speaker 4: Chambliss jumps up into the race.
- 38:28Speaker 5: The problem is he doesn't have Lane Kiffin calling plays
- 38:30Speaker 5: for him.
- 38:31Speaker 3: That's a bit of a problem.
- 38:32Speaker 4: All right, let's go to the favorite, C.J. Carr of
- 38:34Speaker 4: Notre Dame. His only issue is going in at the
- 38:37Speaker 4: favorite in September is rarely a good thing. Remember, Andrew
- 38:40Speaker 4: Luck was the favorite.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want to peak too early.
- 38:42Speaker 4: You never want to be the favorite in the highs
- 38:43Speaker 4: in September. November is better. The only big monster game
- 38:47Speaker 4: that I shouldn't say that, but the big one is Miami.
- 38:50Speaker 4: They have Miami, national TV, Notre Dame. He's going to
- 38:53Speaker 4: pile up yards, pile up numbers against some decent opponents,
- 38:56Speaker 4: but that Miami game is do or die for the Heisman.
- 38:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, that's an interesting game. I'll get to
- 39:00Speaker 5: that one in a second. I worry that the offense
- 39:02Speaker 5: is going to be a little too conservative, and they're
- 39:04Speaker 5: really not going to let C.J. Carr cook, especially because
- 39:06Speaker 5: they're going to be killing some people.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Or if they're up 30-5 at halftime because there's a safety,
- 39:10Speaker 4: you know, throw a lot in the second half.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think C.J.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Carr is going to rack up the numbers, but that
- 39:14Speaker 5: Notre Dame-Miami game, That might be where my pick is
- 39:17Speaker 5: coming from, Paul.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Oh, that's moments away. Let's go to Arch Manning. Now,
- 39:21Speaker 4: Arch Manning has been a Heisman candidate since birth. And,
- 39:25Speaker 4: you know, there's got to be a Manning who wins
- 39:27Speaker 4: a Heisman. There's going to be Marshall Manning in four years.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Who knows who it's going to be? But Arch Manning
- 39:30Speaker 4: has opportunity for the Heisman. He's got the natural built-in storyline.
- 39:34Speaker 4: He plays Ohio State. He plays Tennessee. He plays Oklahoma, Florida,
- 39:38Speaker 4: Ole Miss, LSU, A & M. Those are Heisman statement games.
- 39:42Speaker 4: He's got a bunch of chances to either play his
- 39:44Speaker 4: way in or out of the Heisman.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Well, yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 5: I mean, you keep saying all that. Is that definitely
- 39:48Speaker 5: a good thing? Because you have to have a winning record. Remember,
- 39:51Speaker 5: RG3 was about 8-3 when he won it. But I
- 39:54Speaker 5: think Texas has to be in the playoff for Arch
- 39:56Speaker 5: to even consider getting the Heisman.
- 39:58Speaker 3: So I don't know if all those opponents are going.
- 40:01Speaker 2: To help him.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Now, you and I are big Heisman guys. We've always
- 40:03Speaker 4: gone to the Heisman Awards. I think there's some pictures
- 40:05Speaker 4: of us doing the Heisman, hanging with Derrick Henry. I
- 40:08Speaker 4: don't know if they're going to show those or not,
- 40:09Speaker 4: but We're ready for your pick. I'm going to let
- 40:11Speaker 4: you go first. Who is your Heisen pick? Look at that.
- 40:15Speaker 4: I don't know what you're doing, but Derrick Henry, I
- 40:17Speaker 4: think he likes what I'm doing. You're kind of doing
- 40:19Speaker 4: Broadway musical thing, though.
- 40:21Speaker 3: No, Paul, I don't think he liked it. First of all,
- 40:23Speaker 3: he's a huge, huge man.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Yeah, he's like you with an extra 100 pounds on him.
- 40:28Speaker 5: Yeah, he could have, with his pinky finger, could have
- 40:30Speaker 5: held us off. There's no way we're going to tackle
- 40:31Speaker 5: that man.
- 40:32Speaker 3: So, interesting. You picked a running back picture there.
- 40:35Speaker 5: We don't get a lot of running backs anymore, but
- 40:37Speaker 5: I'm not going running back. But I'm not going quarterback
- 40:40Speaker 5: because I think the quarterbacks are all going to cannibalize
- 40:43Speaker 5: each other. I'm going wide receiver, do everything, man. Malachi
- 40:46Speaker 5: Toney out of University of Miami. I think he's still
- 40:48Speaker 5: 18 years old, but he's the most exciting player in
- 40:51Speaker 5: the country. I think that team is going to be unbelievable.
- 40:54Speaker 5: I think the offense is going to run through him.
- 40:56Speaker 5: He will get a lot of pub. And we've had
- 40:58Speaker 5: a couple wide receivers get the Heisman. We had Devontae
- 41:01Speaker 5: Smith and Travis Hunter, who did both ways. This reminds
- 41:04Speaker 5: me a little of Travis Hunter, Paul, because he's such
- 41:06Speaker 5: a versatile player.
- 41:08Speaker 3: I think voters are going.
- 41:08Speaker 5: To see he's unique and he's just absolutely spectacular.
- 41:13Speaker 4: I like this pick. It's a gutsy pick by you,
- 41:14Speaker 4: but he's a highlight machine. You need highlights to win
- 41:17Speaker 4: the Heisman. Desmond Howard won it with highlights, not necessary production. Look,
- 41:20Speaker 4: I'm going to take the safe pick here. It's not
- 41:22Speaker 4: going to be sexy. It's going to be the safe pick.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Julian Sane of Ohio State. He's going to pile up yards. No,
- 41:27Speaker 4: I'm not going Julian Sane. I'm baiting you there. I
- 41:29Speaker 4: was going to go Jeremiah Smith or Julian Sane. I'm
- 41:31Speaker 4: not going that. I think Dante Moore is going to
- 41:33Speaker 4: pile it up. I'm not sure what a pro he's
- 41:35Speaker 4: going to be, but Dante Moore and Oregon are going
- 41:36Speaker 4: to roll through some people, and they like the Heisman.
- 41:39Speaker 4: They want to get the Heisman. They tried to get
- 41:40Speaker 4: it for Joey Harrington years ago. Dante Moore of Oregon
- 41:43Speaker 4: is my pick. I think it's going to be very,
- 41:45Speaker 4: very close.
- 41:46Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got his receivers back. I think his numbers
- 41:48Speaker 5: are going to be huge. They have a tough schedule, too,
- 41:51Speaker 5: which is good or bad for the Heisman, right?
- 41:53Speaker 4: Yes, that's right. Coming up next, we're going to give
- 41:55Speaker 4: some other people the Heisman. We're going to have constructive criticism.
- 41:58Speaker 4: and wrap up the day with some picks. All that
- 42:00Speaker 4: and coming up more on Not So Fast with Paps
- 42:02Speaker 4: and Perloff.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Perloff, and Paps. Okay,
- 42:07Speaker 5: we already had week zero, but I think we're safe
- 42:09Speaker 5: to do our national title picks now.
- 42:11Speaker 4: Now, have you been spending the whole week chopping them up,
- 42:13Speaker 4: or are you still deciding as we speak?
- 42:15Speaker 5: No, no, I have my pick. I've kind of had
- 42:18Speaker 5: this the whole time. I went back and forth a
- 42:20Speaker 5: little bit, but I'm going to let you go first.
- 42:22Speaker 4: Yeah, to be fair to you, you went Heisman first.
- 42:23Speaker 4: I'll go national title pick second. My one concern about
- 42:26Speaker 4: my national title pick is this team, will they be
- 42:29Speaker 4: challenging enough during the regular season? That's tipping my pick.
- 42:31Speaker 4: Notre Dame will be in the national title game. I
- 42:33Speaker 4: think they still have the running game. They lost some
- 42:35Speaker 4: running backs. They have a great defense line, and C.J.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Carr is a top-level quarterback. My one concern is being
- 42:42Speaker 4: ready for that playoff run where you've got to win
- 42:43Speaker 4: a bunch of ballgames against a bunch of good teams
- 42:45Speaker 4: because they're playing some teams like B.C. is not getting
- 42:48Speaker 4: you ready. SMU maybe will get you ready, but I
- 42:50Speaker 4: don't know if Stanford is getting you ready. So I'm
- 42:53Speaker 4: going Notre Dame, Texas.
- 42:55Speaker 3: National title game.
- 42:56Speaker 4: A ratings bonanza. The Manning brothers, Notre Dame, it's all happening.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Yeah, no, listen.
- 43:03Speaker 5: I can't argue against either of those two teams. Texas,
- 43:06Speaker 5: it seems to me, has a long road. I know
- 43:08Speaker 5: they're ranked really high, but last year I was thinking
- 43:11Speaker 5: Texas was going to be my pick.
- 43:12Speaker 3: It didn't happen.
- 43:13Speaker 5: You really have that much faith in Arch and Sark
- 43:16Speaker 5: and everything going on?
- 43:17Speaker 4: I do this year, because if not now, when?
- 43:19Speaker 3: If not now, when? Okay. I also.
- 43:23Speaker 5: have Notre Dame in the national title game. I think
- 43:26Speaker 5: their style of play fits well with the college football playoff.
- 43:28Speaker 5: I think Marcus Freeman is a great coach, and he's
- 43:31Speaker 5: really stacked talent, especially on the lines.
- 43:33Speaker 3: So Notre Dame's there, but they're going to lose, Paul.
- 43:35Speaker 7: Wow.
- 43:36Speaker 5: I'm very sorry to say that. The Miami Hurricanes. are
- 43:40Speaker 5: going to be this year's national champion. Now, the two
- 43:43Speaker 5: teams play on November 7th. It's really the first challenge
- 43:46Speaker 5: on the books for either team. I think you're going
- 43:48Speaker 5: to get a rematch, which will be fun. I don't
- 43:50Speaker 5: know if it's a rating of Arch Manning, but Miami
- 43:54Speaker 5: lost a lot of guys to the pros. Lost Reuben
- 43:55Speaker 5: Bain on defense, lost quarterback Carson Beck. I'm not worried
- 43:58Speaker 5: at all. They totally restocked Darian Mensah at quarterback. Their
- 44:02Speaker 5: D is going to be nasty this year. Malachi, Tony,
- 44:05Speaker 5: that's why I have them in the Heisman because I
- 44:07Speaker 5: think they're going to be the number one team in
- 44:09Speaker 5: the country coming into the playoffs.
- 44:09Speaker 4: We should work in marketing. We just marketed two great
- 44:12Speaker 4: college football national title games. Miami N.D., Michael Irvin's on
- 44:15Speaker 4: one sideline. Jerome Bettis is on the other sideline. If
- 44:19Speaker 4: he's star-laden, you'll be going back to the 80s, Catholics
- 44:21Speaker 4: versus convicts, 30 for 30. You run that all month.
- 44:24Speaker 4: That would be the perfect national title game.
- 44:27Speaker 5: By the way, I don't think we called Indiana Miami
- 44:30Speaker 5: last year.
- 44:30Speaker 4: No, we sure didn't. We've had a great week here
- 44:33Speaker 4: on Not So Fast. Thank everybody in the building. Thanks
- 44:35Speaker 4: to Dan Patrick. We like to do a thing here
- 44:37Speaker 4: called Constructive Criticism. You tell us what you like, didn't
- 44:40Speaker 4: like about the show. Now, we only have time for
- 44:42Speaker 4: one today, but, Perloff, you're going to like this one.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 44:44Speaker 4: It's a very heavy compliment for us. The lighting on
- 44:48Speaker 4: the show is phenomenal.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Wow. Yes.
- 44:51Speaker 5: First of all, thank you, Troy, and you're absolutely right.
- 44:55Speaker 5: I am still shocked at how nice this studio is.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I looked through the Twitter feed for, like, Paul,
- 45:00Speaker 4: you nailed it with your warm take. Perloff, you're crushing
- 45:02Speaker 4: your NFC North preview. Didn't find those, but they said
- 45:06Speaker 4: the lighting is phenomenal.
- 45:08Speaker 5: Do you remember, Paul? I was pretty active in the
- 45:10Speaker 5: lighting process. I'm like, can you make me not look
- 45:12Speaker 5: so pale? And our boss said, I can try, but
- 45:16Speaker 5: I can't make any promises. But they did an amazing job.
- 45:19Speaker 4: All right, it's time for NSFW. Not exactly what you
- 45:22Speaker 4: think it means. NSFW is the Not So Fast winner
- 45:25Speaker 4: of the week. Who in sports won? Who's just having
- 45:27Speaker 4: a good time? You want me to go or you
- 45:29Speaker 4: to go?
- 45:30Speaker 3: You go first.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Okay, I'm going to go Pete Crow Armstrong. Pete Crow
- 45:33Speaker 4: Armstrong had a monstrous week, and it's still going on.
- 45:36Speaker 4: He is now the NL MVP in waiting. I didn't
- 45:40Speaker 4: think someone could beat Otani when he's pitching and hitting.
- 45:43Speaker 4: And Pete Crow Armstrong leading off games with homers, like
- 45:45Speaker 4: they're against the Reds. Ending game with homers, like later
- 45:48Speaker 4: that game against the Reds. Hanging out with Caleb Williams.
- 45:52Speaker 4: He has the nickname. He has the game. He's got
- 45:55Speaker 4: the star power.
- 45:56Speaker 3: It's his week.
- 45:57Speaker 5: You know, a few weeks ago, it was pretty close.
- 45:58Speaker 5: Joey Otani and PCA, he's blown him out of the water.
- 46:02Speaker 5: Now the competition is over. But that being said, this
- 46:05Speaker 5: does not mean you're going to have postseason success.
- 46:08Speaker 3: You're a Cubs fan.
- 46:09Speaker 5: If you got the MVP and no World Series, are
- 46:11Speaker 5: you okay with that?
- 46:11Speaker 4: We just won this week. Let's move on.
- 46:13Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 46:15Speaker 5: My winner of the week is in college football. We
- 46:18Speaker 5: don't talk about him as much as we used to,
- 46:20Speaker 5: but how about Deion Sanders in Colorado getting the W
- 46:23Speaker 5: at Georgia Tech? They were six and a half point underdogs.
- 46:26Speaker 5: This was a great win for a couple reasons. It
- 46:28Speaker 5: was a tough game, came down to the end. You know,
- 46:30Speaker 5: situational football, Colorado hasn't been great the last few years.
- 46:34Speaker 5: I think they sort of hung in there. I am
- 46:37Speaker 5: actually pretty excited. I like a low-key Dion. You know,
- 46:40Speaker 5: Dion has not been talking a big game at all.
- 46:42Speaker 5: I want to see him and his guys just coach.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Yeah, less pub, more production. He's a nice guy. We've
- 46:48Speaker 4: had him many times on the Dan Patrick Show, and
- 46:49Speaker 4: he's a good guy you root for. It was out
- 46:51Speaker 4: of hand a couple years ago. All right, a couple
- 46:53Speaker 4: more things. Let's talk about Monday's lead. What will Monday's
- 46:56Speaker 4: lead be on all the national shows?
- 46:58Speaker 3: I'm going to let you go first.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Okay, college football obviously will dominate the weekend, but I
- 47:03Speaker 5: think an NFL story is going to sneak in there.
- 47:05Speaker 5: There's one quarterback competition left, and it's down in Atlanta.
- 47:08Speaker 5: I think it gets decided this weekend. And Michael Penix.
- 47:12Speaker 5: gets a starting job for the Atlanta Falcons. I think
- 47:15Speaker 5: the team's going to realize there's no future with Tua.
- 47:17Speaker 5: We have to find out what we have in Penix.
- 47:20Speaker 5: He's got more physical talent. He's learning the game even
- 47:24Speaker 5: though he's been hurt. I think it's going to be Penix. Now,
- 47:26Speaker 5: will it work, Paul? I can't guarantee that, but come Monday,
- 47:29Speaker 5: that is going to be your main headline.
- 47:31Speaker 4: So I'm going to go Monday's lead. Good one by you, Pearl.
- 47:34Speaker 4: I'm going to go Monday's lead is Lane Kiffin, but
- 47:35Speaker 4: off the field. I think he is going to win
- 47:37Speaker 4: the game against Clemson. LSU will beat Clemson. But I
- 47:39Speaker 4: think the SEC is going to come back scorched earth
- 47:41Speaker 4: over the weekend if this actually plays out and they
- 47:44Speaker 4: get embarrassed on national TV. Greg Sankey, not a big
- 47:47Speaker 4: guy about losing. He's not real comfortable losing, especially to
- 47:49Speaker 4: his coaches that he's supposed to be kind of the
- 47:51Speaker 4: boss of. I think Greg Sankey lays in Elaine Kiffin
- 47:55Speaker 4: with some type of punishment, some type of possible suspension
- 47:58Speaker 4: next week. So that could be a monstrous headline.
- 48:00Speaker 5: We've got to see Lane win all year long just
- 48:02Speaker 5: for the drama.
- 48:03Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 48:03Speaker 4: All right, keep it friendly. You and I, $ 20. Let's
- 48:06Speaker 4: boot $ 20 on this one. LSU giving 10 to Clemson.
- 48:09Speaker 4: I'm letting you go first.
- 48:10Speaker 3: Oh, I got the Tigers. I got the— The LSU Tigers.
- 48:15Speaker 6: If you say the Tigers.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I got the Death Valley team.
- 48:16Speaker 4: That would cover your bet.
- 48:17Speaker 3: I know.
- 48:18Speaker 5: I got LSU. I think it's old school versus new school.
- 48:21Speaker 5: All those transfers are going to be good. It's going
- 48:23Speaker 5: to take a while to gel, but they're so much
- 48:25Speaker 5: more talented than Clemson.
- 48:26Speaker 4: I'll take Clemson covering, not winning. Ole Miss giving six
- 48:28Speaker 4: and a half to your Louisville squad, Pearl.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 48:31Speaker 5: I'm all about Louisville this year. Neutral field. Lincoln Keen holds, Paul.
- 48:35Speaker 5: Remember that name. Cardinals not only cover, they win.
- 48:38Speaker 4: I think Ole Miss is going to go big. Thanks
- 48:40Speaker 4: for listening to the show all week. Dan Patrick Show
- 48:42Speaker 4: on Monday, not so fast, right after that, right here
- 48:44Speaker 4: on NBC Sports Now. Great week.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Take it easy.
