Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm good. How are you, Jacob?
- 0:01Speaker 2: Yeah, good. Thank you.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Oh, that's good. That's good. Welcome to Heavy Mag.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having us on.
- 0:06Speaker 1: That's good. It's good.
- 0:07Speaker 3: So you're from the band Cat Piss, which, what a title.
- 0:11Speaker 3: I've got to ask, before we start, first of all,
- 0:13Speaker 3: welcome to Heavy Mag and the good listeners here.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Where the hell did you get that name from?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Our drummer kind of came up with it. He was
- 0:21Speaker 2: like looking through those memes on Facebook, just like, you're
- 0:25Speaker 2: dating this guy and he has this list of stupid
- 0:27Speaker 2: band names and he came up with it from something
- 0:30Speaker 2: like that.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Band name generators are quite funny, actually. If you put
- 0:35Speaker 3: some random stuff, that's cool. Well, it's certainly one for
- 0:38Speaker 3: conversation topic and you don't.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Grandma definitely doesn't like.
- 0:42Speaker 3: It, but my grandma's aren't supposed to like it.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's shock value. So you guys are on the bill
- 0:50Speaker 1: for Big Sound, which is pretty huge.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's massive. I can't believe that we got through
- 0:55Speaker 2: for it really, but it's an awesome opportunity and we're
- 0:58Speaker 2: very grateful that we've been given it.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, for sure. And whereabouts are you guys located?
- 1:04Speaker 2: In Newcastle, yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Oh, okay. So you're from there. And what's the scene
- 1:08Speaker 1: like down there for yourselves been? Is it getting good traction?
- 1:10Speaker 1: Obviously someone's listened to you and liked what they heard.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Newcastle's honestly the best for it. It's all a
- 1:17Speaker 2: tight-knit community and it doesn't matter. You can have mixed
- 1:19Speaker 2: bills with heaps of different genres and everyone just comes
- 1:22Speaker 2: and gets around and it's awesome.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Oh, that's so refreshing to hear. Yeah, it's a great community.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Like you say, it's, you know, everyone sort of gets
- 1:29Speaker 3: along and supports the locals, which is.
- 1:31Speaker 1: What we need more of.
- 1:32Speaker 3: And opportunities like Big Sound, which is providing that platform
- 1:37Speaker 3: for a lot of up-and-comings, which is so, so good.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So is it the first time you guys would have
- 1:42Speaker 3: played in Brisbane land, as we call it?
- 1:45Speaker 2: We have played in Brisbane, I think, once before when
- 1:48Speaker 2: we went on a little regional tour.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Mini tours are good. They're fun. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So what's the history of Cat Pist up until now?
- 1:58Speaker 3: How long have you guys been doing your thing? And
- 2:00Speaker 3: give us the background, all the good dates.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's about four years now we've been together.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And our singer Heath has always been really into music.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And a few of us play in a different band.
- 2:10Speaker 2: And for his 21st, we all got together and He
- 2:13Speaker 2: wanted to do like a live karaoke night sort of thing.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So he jumped on with another band and then he
- 2:18Speaker 2: was like, let's start a band. And then, yeah, just.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You guys love karaoke. The youngins love it.
- 2:25Speaker 2: It's a mega resurgence.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I know. Oh, that's cool. So four years and a
- 2:29Speaker 1: few other bands and here you are. Have you guys.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we just started jamming and writing funky songs. Like
- 2:35Speaker 2: our first EP was just all straight. punk rock and
- 2:38Speaker 2: roll stuff that was easy and fun to play.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And yeah yeah it's.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Always been about the energy for us like we get
- 2:48Speaker 2: on stage to have fun and we look like we're
- 2:50Speaker 2: having fun so i love that gets behind it as well.
- 2:53Speaker 3: That's so awesome because i mean there are great bands
- 2:56Speaker 3: out there and the music is good but they just
- 2:58Speaker 3: bore me like they're just like there's Dude, like I get,
- 3:01Speaker 3: you know, you've got to concentrate, but yeah, I think
- 3:03Speaker 3: that's so important, you know, especially if you're up and
- 3:05Speaker 3: coming is that, you know, that crowd engagement. And if
- 3:09Speaker 3: you're up there doing anything, having a ripping good time,
- 3:11Speaker 3: then it just, it feeds, the audience feed off it.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I think, yeah, I think that's, I mean, obviously the
- 3:18Speaker 3: music's good, but yeah, if you don't quite have that
- 3:20Speaker 3: other factor, you know, you can sometimes fizzle out, which, yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And who doesn't love a good punk band? Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Getting messy up the front no that's awesome so um
- 3:32Speaker 3: so that's how you describe your style is punk alt rock.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah I think our first EP was definitely more on
- 3:37Speaker 2: the punk side and we're still based in punk but
- 3:40Speaker 2: we are leaning more into the heavier side of things
- 3:42Speaker 2: now with some hardcore influences and things but Yeah. I
- 3:46Speaker 2: definitely still classify us as a punk band. Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And we don't need to get technical about it.
- 3:52Speaker 2: There's a million different words you can throw to explain things.
- 3:54Speaker 1: The studio is what we say. No, that's always, it's funny.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Cause you see a lot of your bands start off,
- 4:02Speaker 3: you know, some of the early stuff is like really
- 4:05Speaker 3: heavy and quite different to where they usually land. And it's,
- 4:09Speaker 3: it's nice to say, you know, that punk is, you
- 4:12Speaker 3: know firmly set where you're like we'll just start start
- 4:15Speaker 3: right here yeah it's good it's good so um so
- 4:19Speaker 3: you said you got an ep out which is just
- 4:22Speaker 3: kind of how long ago do you guys put that
- 4:23Speaker 3: one out.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Um that was 2022 i believe or 21 that was
- 4:27Speaker 2: blood sweat and beers and then we released.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I like it i'm like i'd be keen to see
- 4:33Speaker 3: you guys play actually it sounds like it would be
- 4:35Speaker 3: a lot of fun.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And then we did an album last year, Taste the Piss.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I love it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I don't know if you've got a promoter or a manager,
- 4:46Speaker 3: but you guys are all over that marketing shit.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Like, that's so good.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I've seen Heath and Dylan are the two most
- 4:52Speaker 2: active in promoting and knowing all the right things to do. But, yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: they're all just so keen on it. And we all are,
- 4:59Speaker 2: but they put in the effort to go the extra
- 5:01Speaker 2: mile to do it all.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's awesome.
- 5:04Speaker 3: And these days, unfortunately, you know, like it or not,
- 5:07Speaker 3: you know, that's where it is promoting is being on
- 5:09Speaker 3: the socials and just, you know, you've got to back yourself.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I mean, you've always had to anyway, but I think,
- 5:14Speaker 3: you know, given the space that we've got and so
- 5:16Speaker 3: much opportunity and it's very much an independent, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 3: field and there's no one set pathway to success anymore,
- 5:22Speaker 3: which is great. But if you're not doing that and
- 5:25Speaker 3: backing yourself and just pushing it all out as much
- 5:27Speaker 3: as you can, you may as well just hang your
- 5:30Speaker 3: boots up and stick to the garage, you know?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 3: So I think, I know about yourselves, but I definitely
- 5:35Speaker 3: think that's, you know, got a lot to do with
- 5:37Speaker 3: you know, who gets the traction and who doesn't because,
- 5:40Speaker 3: you know, we all know that you're only as good
- 5:42Speaker 3: as your marketing manager.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Or your record label. How much do you want to
- 5:45Speaker 1: spend on you? And, yeah, you can do it yourself
- 5:48Speaker 1: and stuff like that. Like, that's awesome. Yeah, awesome.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And so have you found, like, that's your response been
- 5:52Speaker 3: so far has been quite obviously, you know, healthy on
- 5:55Speaker 3: the socials and tracking how that goes?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, the socials definitely is good to track it a
- 6:00Speaker 2: little bit but mainly just talking to people at our
- 6:03Speaker 2: live shows because we play pretty often. Yeah, that's so good.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Our singer has the gift of the gab and he
- 6:09Speaker 2: always just talks to everyone.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So who are you hoping to see yourselves when you
- 6:13Speaker 3: get up to big sound?
- 6:15Speaker 2: We have a bit of a list between us, but yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 2: DC Maxwell is cool. I've seen some things on socials
- 6:20Speaker 2: from him. Yeah, cool. And Stimpies and Kiz.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And Low as well. They're more of a heavy band.
- 6:27Speaker 2: So we're going to align with them a bit, I think. Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I actually interviewed, I think it was Luca last week.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So keen to see them. Yeah. Actually, there's a few people.
- 6:37Speaker 1: the lineup that are keen.
- 6:38Speaker 3: To see low so the stuff is pretty good it's
- 6:40Speaker 3: pretty heavy yeah um no that's awesome yeah no it's
- 6:44Speaker 3: definitely a big sound it's it's a great event and
- 6:47Speaker 3: it's so good to see it happening again obviously for
- 6:49Speaker 3: this year and it gets yourself gives you guys that
- 6:51Speaker 3: whole you know a week's full of showcasing up and
- 6:55Speaker 3: coming live music which is we need more of that
- 6:57Speaker 3: stuff happening it's um it's the best and good for
- 7:00Speaker 3: venues too because obviously you know it goes hand in
- 7:03Speaker 3: hand when you've got venues that are shutting down it
- 7:05Speaker 3: doesn't leave you know a lot of places to play
- 7:07Speaker 3: um play live music so it's um certainly been well
- 7:11Speaker 3: received and again and a great great opportunity for yourselves
- 7:15Speaker 3: and many upcoming and heading off he's going to stay
- 7:18Speaker 3: for the full week or you just.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah absolutely yeah we're going to get amongst it and
- 7:22Speaker 2: try and wear ourselves out doing absolutely so awesome see.
- 7:26Speaker 3: You guys in action and yeah it's um so anything
- 7:29Speaker 3: else that you've got um on the rest of the rest.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Of the year uh we have been working on some
- 7:34Speaker 2: new music just a few singles that we've been trying
- 7:37Speaker 2: to pump out and get some more things going.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah. And are you signed to a label or are
- 7:41Speaker 1: you just independent?
- 7:43Speaker 2: We're all just independent. Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Our producer is a good friend of the band that
- 7:48Speaker 2: plays in other bands as well. And he's like a
- 7:51Speaker 2: godsend to us. Like he just knows exactly what we
- 7:54Speaker 2: want without us having to tell him.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah. That's so good.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Writing music with him, helping us has always been like,
- 8:01Speaker 2: when you go into a studio with a song.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Transforms into something different.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Awesome. Well, hopefully you might, you never know, you
- 8:10Speaker 1: might get picked up by someone.
- 8:12Speaker 3: But you know, if not, you know, I think the
- 8:14Speaker 3: indie opportunity is, you know, it's definitely so doable these
- 8:17Speaker 3: days and it's really encouraging for anyone who wants to
- 8:20Speaker 3: be inspired. Definitely take a page out of these guys' books,
- 8:24Speaker 3: you know. And yeah, well, we love new music here
- 8:28Speaker 3: at Heavy as well, you know, especially Aussie, local Aussie
- 8:30Speaker 3: music and happy to our give you guys a big
- 8:33Speaker 3: boost in the social world and the heavy music listeners.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So give them a listen. What's the name of your latest?
- 8:40Speaker 3: Taste the Piss.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Taste the Piss is our latest one, yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And is that available on all platforms?
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, all platforms. And we have vinyl and everything still available.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah, nice.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Go to the socials and find it all there.
- 8:51Speaker 1: We love the vinyl. Yeah. Love that resurgence. Good sound system, vinyl.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Steph's kiss. The best.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we've got a big show coming up
- 9:00Speaker 2: at the end of the year as well that we
- 9:02Speaker 2: try to put together.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It's talking to another band in that area, and I
- 9:05Speaker 3: think they were doing one similar to that.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think other bands do it that we normally
- 9:09Speaker 2: hop on, but we do our own called Piss Fest,
- 9:11Speaker 2: and we just get all of our mates on to play.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I love it. All right. We may be in touch
- 9:17Speaker 1: again because that shit's– that's the goods. I love it.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That's so cool.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Well, you've been an absolute genuine pleasure to chat with, Jacob,
- 9:23Speaker 3: and it's been– been good times and i'm really keen
- 9:27Speaker 3: to see more from yourselves and uh bring on big
- 9:30Speaker 3: sound in brisneyland and uh yeah let's go yeah let's
- 9:33Speaker 3: party on for a few days not quite a week yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I reckon we'll be spent after that so it's probably
- 9:40Speaker 2: a good.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Amount of time yeah yeah get amongst it get rowdy
- 9:43Speaker 3: go home and sleep awesome will you take care and
- 9:48Speaker 3: we'll definitely see you in the next few weeks
