- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number two and thirty three,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today Dan and I are back together again and
- 0:23Speaker 1: we're discussing his life changing elk hunt in Colorado in
- 0:26Speaker 1: my downright disappointing trip to North Dakota. Before we kick
- 0:48Speaker 1: things off, though, we want to thank our friends at
- 0:50Speaker 1: Lacrosse Boots for their support of this podcast episode. And
- 0:54Speaker 1: if you're a white tailed deer hunter, and I gotta
- 0:56Speaker 1: believe if you're listening to this show, you probably are.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Other Wise I got to believe you're really bored of
- 1:02Speaker 1: what we've been talking about over all these years. But
- 1:04Speaker 1: assuming you're a white tailed deer hunter, I personally haven't
- 1:07Speaker 1: found a better boot to recommend to you than one
- 1:09Speaker 1: of these Lacrosse Rubber knee high boots. I really like
- 1:12Speaker 1: their Arrowhead and Alpha Burley Pro models. I've been using
- 1:15Speaker 1: those two over the past six or seven years now.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think you know they're both. They're both waterproof, they're
- 1:21Speaker 1: available in a number of different insulation levels for whatever
- 1:23Speaker 1: temperature range you're gonna be hunting in. Um, I'm going
- 1:27Speaker 1: with the eight hundred gram fincilate version this year. That
- 1:30Speaker 1: seems to be warm enough for the late season, but
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm not miserable hiking around in them in the early season.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Not too hot. UM. So different installation levels, they are
- 1:40Speaker 1: comfortable enough to hike in and out for even long
- 1:42Speaker 1: distances to your stand. You know, last week in Montana
- 1:46Speaker 1: it was probably four miles give or take that I
- 1:48Speaker 1: was going in and out every day to that stand,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and it was fine with those boots. Not to mention
- 1:55Speaker 1: the rubber construction on these Alpha Burley's or on these arrowheads,
- 1:59Speaker 1: that rubber vents them from holding onto too much older,
- 2:02Speaker 1: making them a great option for those of us who
- 2:04Speaker 1: are trying to be as sent free as possible. So
- 2:06Speaker 1: great options. And if you'd like to check out what
- 2:08Speaker 1: Lacrosse Boots has to offer you and other white tail
- 2:12Speaker 1: guys and girls like us, you can head on over
- 2:14Speaker 1: to Lacross Footwear dot com. All right, welcome back to
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and for the first time in a pretty decent while,
- 2:28Speaker 1: we are here for just a good old fashioned Mark
- 2:31Speaker 1: and Dan bs session. And it feels so good to
- 2:35Speaker 1: say that no plans, no expectations. I love that because
- 2:41Speaker 1: the thing for me is I'm always really good at
- 2:43Speaker 1: under promising and then occasionally over delivering. So I think
- 2:46Speaker 1: that's that's the game plan for today. So basically what
- 2:50Speaker 1: you're telling everyone now is you're gonna tell them it's
- 2:53Speaker 1: a good podcast, but we're gonna weigh under deliver. Yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 1: like for this probably just jinks the whole thing, but whatever, dude,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I've been in just a just a tizzy of chaos
- 3:07Speaker 1: the last couple of days. So I literally ran this
- 3:12Speaker 1: this is the truth. I literally ran into my house
- 3:14Speaker 1: just before starting to record this. I ran over to
- 3:17Speaker 1: my son and kissed him goodnight, hurried over into my
- 3:22Speaker 1: office and took off my pants. Um, that's it, that's it, yea.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And it was a prerequisite to take off my pants
- 3:33Speaker 1: before recording this podcast. So you're sitting there and just
- 3:36Speaker 1: your underwear. I am just in my underwear for you tonight.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And I did that for a reason. Though's because I
- 3:41Speaker 1: was worried that I might get poison ivy on me
- 3:44Speaker 1: because I was just in the woods all day working
- 3:46Speaker 1: on tree stands, and I just thought to myself, oh gosh,
- 3:49Speaker 1: these are probably poison ivvy covered pants. And if you
- 3:52Speaker 1: sit here recording a podcast, you're gonna be like touching
- 3:55Speaker 1: your legs and not thinking about it and then touch
- 3:57Speaker 1: your face. And I can't be having so panci lists
- 4:02Speaker 1: for poison ivy precautions. Uh. So that's that's my state
- 4:07Speaker 1: of mind right now. Um, it's a perfect, perfect way
- 4:13Speaker 1: to start this podcast. Um, what I what I do?
- 4:16Speaker 1: There are a few things that I did have on
- 4:17Speaker 1: my list of things I want to make sure we
- 4:19Speaker 1: did talk about. Really, just two that we have to cover. Um,
- 4:23Speaker 1: number one, we gotta talk about your elk hunt. And
- 4:26Speaker 1: number two, we got to talk about my North Dakota
- 4:29Speaker 1: hunt with Further because last week's podcast, you were out
- 4:32Speaker 1: hunting the mountains, but me, Spencer and Further did a
- 4:34Speaker 1: quick one and I was just on my way from
- 4:38Speaker 1: Montana to North Dakota. But no one knows what's happened since,
- 4:42Speaker 1: so I gotta give him those updates. But that's that's
- 4:45Speaker 1: all I got. So otherwise, it is an open highway
- 4:48Speaker 1: for us to take people to whatever destination. We can
- 4:51Speaker 1: think of this detour all the way. Yeah, do you
- 4:54Speaker 1: have any detours you want to start with you or
- 4:56Speaker 1: you just so pumped up on elk hunting mojo that
- 4:59Speaker 1: you have to just let it out. Dude, I'm down
- 5:03Speaker 1: for whatever. You know. Me, I don't. I don't like
- 5:05Speaker 1: live by the normal rules. You know, every every rule
- 5:09Speaker 1: I see is basically just kind of a guideline. It's
- 5:12Speaker 1: not necessarily saying you have to do this. So Mark, Plus,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I'm I'm just the sidekick right on this podcast. I
- 5:19Speaker 1: don't make any decisions. You're the one in charge, right.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You live on the edge, Dan, you are the wild card.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And then then I'll throw this one at you then,
- 5:30Speaker 1: because probably nobody cares about anything else except for if
- 5:35Speaker 1: they haven't been following along in other places. If you
- 5:37Speaker 1: kill an elk? So did you kill an elk? No,
- 5:41Speaker 1: we did not kill an elk. But shots were fired,
- 5:45Speaker 1: shots plural, Well one shot, one shot. So here's here's
- 5:51Speaker 1: what I'll do. Here's what I'm gonna say. I'll just
- 5:53Speaker 1: kind of get into the story, right. I want to say,
- 5:56Speaker 1: because I told you when we talked on the phone
- 5:57Speaker 1: the other day, I purposely of waited hearing too many
- 6:01Speaker 1: details because I wanted to hear it now, So I am,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I am dying to hear. Just just give it to me,
- 6:06Speaker 1: all right. So here's the deal. So I learned a
- 6:09Speaker 1: lot on the on the elk hunt. UM that me
- 6:13Speaker 1: and you went on right, like what to do and
- 6:15Speaker 1: what not to do. UM. The first thing that we
- 6:19Speaker 1: did when we got into Colorado. We got into Colorado
- 6:22Speaker 1: like three in the morning. I went to my buddy
- 6:25Speaker 1: Adam Par's house, crashed on his couch, got some sleep.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So that means we woke up Saturday morning. I got
- 6:34Speaker 1: there like three am Saturday morning. I went there or
- 6:39Speaker 1: woke up, oh about nine or so, got some coffee, UM,
- 6:43Speaker 1: went and got some groceries, had to make a couple
- 6:45Speaker 1: of stops and run some errands in town. UM. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: then we headed up to the mountains. Right Saturday. We
- 6:53Speaker 1: got to the mount we got into camp, which a
- 6:56Speaker 1: lot different than so we stayed on private property, but
- 7:00Speaker 1: we hunted all public property. And it looked like you
- 7:03Speaker 1: guys are staying in like a cabin or a house
- 7:06Speaker 1: or something. A cabin. There was no electricity, There was
- 7:09Speaker 1: no running water, so we had to bring all of
- 7:11Speaker 1: our own water, UM, and all of our own food
- 7:15Speaker 1: and ice and all that stuff. So we slept in
- 7:18Speaker 1: a cabin. Me and Ryan slept in a cabin. Uh.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Was this was this specifically because they've heard about your
- 7:24Speaker 1: tent to boccles and they just they really wanted to
- 7:26Speaker 1: avoid that. Well, I'm just lucky, and I'll tell you
- 7:31Speaker 1: as as we get into the story. It's crazy because dude,
- 7:36Speaker 1: if instead of going back to a tent and sleeping
- 7:38Speaker 1: on the ground, you get to go to at least
- 7:39Speaker 1: a mattress in a sleeping bag. Uh, and you're in
- 7:43Speaker 1: a in a enclosure, not necessarily a tent, it's a
- 7:46Speaker 1: game changer as far as getting a good night's sleep.
- 7:49Speaker 1: So um, so that's kind of one thing. But anyway,
- 7:53Speaker 1: for the for the for the over forty crowd, I
- 7:55Speaker 1: guess ha ha ha ha. I'm sorry it was up there.
- 8:01Speaker 1: You had to take it right, yeah, low hanging fruit,
- 8:04Speaker 1: that's right. So anyway, um, I think the last time
- 8:09Speaker 1: what just kicked my ass so bad when we went
- 8:11Speaker 1: was dude, we got we we drove from Iowa to Idaho,
- 8:16Speaker 1: got out of the truck and went straight up the
- 8:18Speaker 1: mountain like we were only at the bottom of it
- 8:20Speaker 1: at your truck for enough time to put our backpacks
- 8:23Speaker 1: on thirty minutes to get dressed, throw them on and
- 8:25Speaker 1: get going, get going. So what what I what we
- 8:28Speaker 1: did this time was we didn't hunt Saturday at all.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We got to the mountain, We got camp set up
- 8:34Speaker 1: and I literally started drinking out of a gallon of
- 8:37Speaker 1: water and I drank and drank and drank, and we
- 8:41Speaker 1: got acclimated. The camp was at about the cabin was
- 8:45Speaker 1: at about ten two yep. So we spent the entire
- 8:52Speaker 1: rest of the evening, um, had a good meal, got
- 8:55Speaker 1: to bed somewhat early, and uh, you know, hydrated and acclimated.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And I think that that changed the game for the
- 9:04Speaker 1: entire week because I wasn't suffering as bad as I
- 9:09Speaker 1: was the last time we went. I mean I felt
- 9:12Speaker 1: really really good. Yes it was exhausting, and yes it
- 9:16Speaker 1: was tiring, and yes it was punishing, but it was
- 9:18Speaker 1: not like defeating, if that makes now. Would you credit
- 9:23Speaker 1: any of that to your change in physical preparation to
- 9:26Speaker 1: for this one? Yeah, I did a lot of different things.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Like I for what I did with you was I
- 9:33Speaker 1: did a lot of like just your regular weightlifting routines
- 9:37Speaker 1: with some cardio and like and when I mean a
- 9:40Speaker 1: regular weightlifting routine. I mean, okay, you go to the
- 9:44Speaker 1: squat rack and you do ten reps, and then you
- 9:48Speaker 1: go and you do some leg extensions and maybe you
- 9:51Speaker 1: do ten dead lifts. This I did like a hundred
- 9:56Speaker 1: dead lifts and so but lighter weight or I did
- 9:59Speaker 1: a of something. So I just wore the muscles out
- 10:03Speaker 1: and then I did stare Masters. And one thing that
- 10:05Speaker 1: I really think helped was my weighted pack hikes. Uh
- 10:12Speaker 1: and this is for like the entire trip, right, but
- 10:15Speaker 1: the weighted the weighted pack hikes. I mean because I
- 10:18Speaker 1: talked to a lot of guys who went out west
- 10:20Speaker 1: from flat lands like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Iowa, and they're like,
- 10:25Speaker 1: nothing can there's no exercise that can prepare you for
- 10:30Speaker 1: what you're going to do. And the one guy was
- 10:33Speaker 1: telling me, and the best exercise that I felt, you
- 10:37Speaker 1: know it worked, was the weighted pack hikes. So I
- 10:40Speaker 1: did a lot of um putting weight on a pack
- 10:44Speaker 1: and hiking for like four miles that some of those
- 10:48Speaker 1: took an hour and a half to maybe two hours,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and just trying to exhaust the body basically was what
- 10:56Speaker 1: I was trying to do. And I feel that the furst.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I mean the first couple of days, man, I felt
- 11:01Speaker 1: really good compared to you know, as the as the
- 11:07Speaker 1: week went on, I felt, you know, my leg my
- 11:10Speaker 1: energy was definitely draining. But we get it hard for
- 11:13Speaker 1: six straight days. Yeah. Um, well that's good though. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: when I was seeing what you're doing this summer with
- 11:20Speaker 1: those hikes, you know, just like you said, nothing but
- 11:23Speaker 1: hiking with a heavy pack can really replicate that. Um.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And it's so important. It's not the glamour muscles and
- 11:30Speaker 1: those you know, curls and stuff that are going to
- 11:31Speaker 1: help you in the mountains. It's can you slog up
- 11:34Speaker 1: a hill all day with a heavy load and just
- 11:37Speaker 1: keep going and keep going? And I'm glad that helped out. Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: absolutely helped out. And I'll tell you what, I focus
- 11:45Speaker 1: so much on my lower part of my body, like
- 11:48Speaker 1: my legs and cardio that I hardly did any colonels
- 11:53Speaker 1: or triceps or um the I did do. I did
- 11:56Speaker 1: do shoulder press um and and a lot of rowing
- 11:59Speaker 1: machine for the back, but you know, doing the bench press,
- 12:03Speaker 1: the curls, the triceps, I hardly did any of that
- 12:06Speaker 1: at all. Yeah, And now was your wife upset with
- 12:09Speaker 1: your regiment this time, because it sounds like your glamour
- 12:11Speaker 1: muscles just worn't up to part them this year for her.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Is that part of the strategy to keep child number
- 12:16Speaker 1: four from happening? No, no, no, no, child child number
- 12:20Speaker 1: three keeps child number four from happening. I don't believe it.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I won't believe it to like until I hear about
- 12:25Speaker 1: the procedure. Man, Yeah, you're right. I need I need
- 12:28Speaker 1: to just do it. I don't know why you haven't.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I guess I live on the wild side. Mark, you
- 12:33Speaker 1: live on the edge. You just your tiptoe right on
- 12:38Speaker 1: the precipice of disaster a time. In order to have
- 12:41Speaker 1: a baby, you have to have sex. And when three kids,
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's like that bell curve just goes. Okay, I understand, now,
- 12:50Speaker 1: we get it. Now we get it. I can tell
- 12:52Speaker 1: we understand. Okay. So so no sex, lots of exercise,
- 12:56Speaker 1: though you're you're feeling better at the beginning of this trip,
- 13:00Speaker 1: continue with this story. So, so, dude, it was day
- 13:05Speaker 1: one was out of a just out of like videos
- 13:11Speaker 1: that I've seen and I'm not talking about elk running
- 13:13Speaker 1: around everywhere. Because we got out of the camp and
- 13:18Speaker 1: I got introduced to something called dead fall this trip
- 13:23Speaker 1: and with high winds the Beetle Kill and dude, I'm
- 13:29Speaker 1: talking about trees stacked on trees, stacked on trees, anything
- 13:32Speaker 1: from knee high to chin high that you're having to
- 13:36Speaker 1: climb over or under or around. And what if you're
- 13:40Speaker 1: walking a straight line on the mountains, let's say should
- 13:45Speaker 1: take about ten minutes to fifteen minutes. We're talking about
- 13:48Speaker 1: forty five minutes of dead fall in a quarter mile
- 13:54Speaker 1: and it's nasty. So you know. Then we dropped down
- 13:59Speaker 1: to about nine five from Camp tend To. We dropped
- 14:02Speaker 1: down over the course of about a half mile to
- 14:04Speaker 1: a creek, walk another half mile up. We're back somewhere
- 14:07Speaker 1: around ten to. Then we start getting out of the
- 14:11Speaker 1: creek to these benches where all the elks, SI, aur
- 14:15Speaker 1: and U. You know. The first setup we heard, we
- 14:18Speaker 1: hear something. We're like, hey, let's set up here. We
- 14:20Speaker 1: call this is day one. We call nothing happened. Sorry,
- 14:24Speaker 1: if I can time out. Did you guys are Adam right?
- 14:29Speaker 1: Adam Adam? He he knew this area, right, So did
- 14:32Speaker 1: you guys have like a game plan, like, hey, we're
- 14:34Speaker 1: gonna go to a place or was it. Heyward's gonna
- 14:36Speaker 1: walk in this direction and see if we hear anything
- 14:38Speaker 1: and stop every time we hear What was like, what
- 14:40Speaker 1: was the game plan as you were doing this hike? Right?
- 14:43Speaker 1: The game plan was, you know he's he pretty much
- 14:48Speaker 1: told us the night before and he showed us on
- 14:50Speaker 1: a map. Hey, we're looking for these these bench types.
- 14:54Speaker 1: It's where there, you know, we come off a steep
- 14:57Speaker 1: there's like a steep drop off on the mountain and
- 14:59Speaker 1: it kind of flattens out and then it gets steep again.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And these flatter areas are what the elk really seemed
- 15:06Speaker 1: to congregate on. That's where they seem to bed throughout
- 15:08Speaker 1: the day. That's their access routes to these meadows where
- 15:12Speaker 1: they're going and eating grass. Um. So a lot of
- 15:17Speaker 1: focusing looking at the topographic mac map and trying to
- 15:20Speaker 1: find these benches where the elk we're at. So he'd
- 15:24Speaker 1: been out there the past two years, three years, so
- 15:27Speaker 1: he had a good idea of where where we're heading. Okay,
- 15:32Speaker 1: so you're heading towards these benches, you're getting there, you
- 15:35Speaker 1: hear something, you set up? What are you doing? So
- 15:40Speaker 1: we set up and uh, and Adams like, Okay, who
- 15:44Speaker 1: who gets first shot. I look at Ryan, I say
- 15:47Speaker 1: paper rock scissors for first shot. My buddy Ryan came
- 15:50Speaker 1: with me. It's like, okay, one, two, three shoot, he wins. Okay,
- 15:55Speaker 1: so he gets first shot. So what he's doing is
- 15:59Speaker 1: wherever we think the elk are gonna come. Then Ryan
- 16:02Speaker 1: and then Adam is however far back behind him, kind
- 16:07Speaker 1: of calling a combination of bugles and cal calls. And
- 16:12Speaker 1: then I'm off on a flank. So if maybe he
- 16:15Speaker 1: hits it, I get a secondary follow up shot, or
- 16:18Speaker 1: if he misses, I get a secondary follow up shot,
- 16:21Speaker 1: or you know, something along those lines. And you're just hearing,
- 16:24Speaker 1: you're just hearing like movement, or you actually heard l
- 16:26Speaker 1: bugling in your direction. You heard movement like cracking come
- 16:31Speaker 1: like cracking going through the dead fall, right, didn't didn't
- 16:34Speaker 1: hear any bugles. So nothing happens on the first try.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And what we're doing is we're working our way up
- 16:43Speaker 1: the mountain with the wind blowing in our face, the
- 16:45Speaker 1: thermals coming downhill. And then what the goal is is
- 16:49Speaker 1: by the time you work your way up, you're to
- 16:51Speaker 1: a point where the thermal switch for the late morning,
- 16:54Speaker 1: you know, and then you're coming down you maybe go
- 16:57Speaker 1: find another meadow and then you work your way down. Right.
- 17:00Speaker 1: So so we get up to this meadow set up.
- 17:04Speaker 1: You know, nothing happens. Set up, nothing happens. And we
- 17:08Speaker 1: heard and then finally, dude, I'm telling you it is
- 17:11Speaker 1: a life changing event. And I'm not talking about what
- 17:14Speaker 1: we heard in Colorado where we hear one bugle, um
- 17:18Speaker 1: probably oh yeah, we didn't heard a crap anile one
- 17:22Speaker 1: mile away. We heard one bugle. Was I was that
- 17:25Speaker 1: when I was telling you what it could be like,
- 17:27Speaker 1: Was I right? Oh dude, it was nuts. I hear
- 17:33Speaker 1: this bugle across the drainage on another side, which sparked
- 17:37Speaker 1: another bugle on our side, which sparked another bugle. So
- 17:41Speaker 1: we heard four elk bugle uh, three in the drainage
- 17:46Speaker 1: that we were at, and one across the creek in
- 17:49Speaker 1: and um in the same drainage, so clear across it
- 17:53Speaker 1: and were I look at my buddy Ryan, I just
- 17:55Speaker 1: like that's this big smile on my face and like,
- 17:57Speaker 1: oh my god. And one was close and off to
- 18:00Speaker 1: where you can hear the chuckle at the end of it,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and like the a little bit of like the rasp
- 18:05Speaker 1: and like the air and like the yeah, right, yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: So we hear these we hear these bugles. Once close
- 18:16Speaker 1: enough we can hear the chuckle, and so I'm getting
- 18:20Speaker 1: fired up. I don't even know what to do. Luckily,
- 18:22Speaker 1: my buddy Adam there is like he's he's been in
- 18:26Speaker 1: that situation before. He's like, Okay, we're gonna work our
- 18:28Speaker 1: way up. We're gonna continue with our plan. And we
- 18:31Speaker 1: worked our way up to the next meadow. Called, heard
- 18:35Speaker 1: a couple of bugles, called, heard a couple of bugles,
- 18:37Speaker 1: And then, which is crazy, the sun came out and
- 18:41Speaker 1: it's shut off. Right. We kept calling a little bit,
- 18:45Speaker 1: we kept calling. Nothing shut off. So we climb up
- 18:50Speaker 1: this meadow and then there's this really steep embankment. But
- 18:53Speaker 1: at the top of this this incline is a flat bench.
- 18:56Speaker 1: It's a little open, but what it will allow us
- 18:59Speaker 1: to do is scan the opposite side of the drainage
- 19:02Speaker 1: to look to see if any elk are coming out
- 19:04Speaker 1: on these meadows or if we can see any movement.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So we climb up. We're sitting. So we started right
- 19:10Speaker 1: when we got off the creek. We're at ten to
- 19:12Speaker 1: now we're at eleven one. You know, obviously This is
- 19:15Speaker 1: a fast version of the story. We pop into a
- 19:18Speaker 1: couple more meadow, we eat lunch, um, pop into a
- 19:22Speaker 1: couple more meadows. I had uh some cliff bars and
- 19:29Speaker 1: then some pack of runs from a company called Heather's Choice.
- 19:32Speaker 1: What's a pack of room? I don't know. It's like
- 19:34Speaker 1: this dense protein bar. It's like, uh um, they're really tasty, dude,
- 19:41Speaker 1: They're they're really tasty. Okay, was it you or was
- 19:44Speaker 1: it further who brought like nothing but cliff bars for
- 19:47Speaker 1: like all of their meals except for dinner. Was that you? Yeah?
- 19:50Speaker 1: That was me on our on Idaho. Oh. I couldn't
- 19:55Speaker 1: live like that. So you had you had a packer room,
- 19:57Speaker 1: which sounds like kind of similar though, right, but it's
- 20:00Speaker 1: way soft. They're really soft. They're like it's like a
- 20:03Speaker 1: a protein brownie, but but full of all organic stuff.
- 20:08Speaker 1: So you thumbs up for that, all thumbs up. And
- 20:12Speaker 1: because we were out of a camp instead of a tent,
- 20:15Speaker 1: you know, and we had we could drive our vehicles there,
- 20:17Speaker 1: we were able to bring more food like bananas and
- 20:19Speaker 1: apples and carrots and stuff like that. So every day
- 20:23Speaker 1: instead of eating you know, straight cliff bars, I was
- 20:26Speaker 1: able to have a banana or a apple right there.
- 20:31Speaker 1: All the other things you mentioned that you think helped you,
- 20:33Speaker 1: none of them made a difference. It was just the
- 20:35Speaker 1: fact that you went off of a straight cliff bar diet.
- 20:39Speaker 1: That's that was what you had wrong last time. Probably, Well,
- 20:43Speaker 1: I couldn't I couldn't go to the bathroom last time,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and this time I didn't have problem going to the bathroom,
- 20:48Speaker 1: and that'll that'll change things absolutely. Okay, So no cliff bars,
- 20:52Speaker 1: pecaruns and whatever else. Uh so sorry, yeah, water, So
- 20:57Speaker 1: we chilled here for about forty minutes, you know, we
- 21:00Speaker 1: catch maybe take a little snooze. And it's kind of
- 21:03Speaker 1: funny because my my buddy Ryan has this real fancy
- 21:06Speaker 1: watch and it tells you calories burned in elevation and
- 21:09Speaker 1: all this stuff, and uh, to get to that point,
- 21:13Speaker 1: we burnt seventeen hundred calories just in the walk in
- 21:20Speaker 1: and dude, I'm telling you, over the course of the
- 21:24Speaker 1: entire trip, we were burning anywhere between five thousand to
- 21:29Speaker 1: six thousand calories a day. That's pretty that's pretty cool
- 21:33Speaker 1: to know. And you get back to camp and you're
- 21:37Speaker 1: you're trying to literally force feed yourself and you can't
- 21:40Speaker 1: even make it to four thousand calories because you're so full.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, guilt free eating. And and then you wake up,
- 21:49Speaker 1: you stuff your face with a breakfast until you're almost uncomfortable,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and you hike and in an hour and a half
- 21:55Speaker 1: you're hungry again. So that was nuts. So anyway back
- 22:01Speaker 1: to the back to day one, because it's kind of
- 22:04Speaker 1: the like Day one and day three, we're the kind
- 22:06Speaker 1: of the most interesting. We get up there. We then
- 22:10Speaker 1: we kind of hike through this next meadow. We're coming around,
- 22:14Speaker 1: work our way up, do some calling sequences similar to
- 22:17Speaker 1: turkey hunting. Right, you're set up, you call, set up call,
- 22:20Speaker 1: set up call, and uh, hopefully something you know, something
- 22:25Speaker 1: was would come out. And long story, long story short,
- 22:30Speaker 1: we turned around, we head down the mountain um and
- 22:34Speaker 1: as we're heading down the mountain, we had all the
- 22:37Speaker 1: way back down to where we started in the very
- 22:39Speaker 1: most bottom meadow and we uh and overcast starts to
- 22:44Speaker 1: come in, a storm comes in, and then it starts
- 22:46Speaker 1: raining again, and then something happened in the weather. I
- 22:51Speaker 1: hate to keep it interrupt to you, Yeah, because you're
- 22:55Speaker 1: getting momentum here and you're really your story flowing, your
- 22:57Speaker 1: juices are flown here. But I gotta ask, um, if
- 23:01Speaker 1: we're comparing and contrasting last trip to this trip, last trip,
- 23:04Speaker 1: when it starts rain, you would put a black garbage
- 23:07Speaker 1: bag on, did you did you bring the garbage bag back?
- 23:12Speaker 1: Or did you real rain here this time? No? No,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I had a real rain jacket this time. So I
- 23:19Speaker 1: prepared and it worked and I was happy. Oh man,
- 23:23Speaker 1: that is one of my greatest memories of all hunting
- 23:26Speaker 1: trips ever, is looking at you in your parka slash
- 23:30Speaker 1: garbage bag, just like literally. But I'm telling you, these
- 23:36Speaker 1: rain storms that we witnessed out in Colorado, they went
- 23:39Speaker 1: away after fifty minutes, right, it didn't rain all day long. Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 1: we had a couple of rough ones. So okay, sorry,
- 23:48Speaker 1: you're in good rain rain ring. Your's good, it's on check.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I'm staying dry. We were heading down the mountain and
- 23:55Speaker 1: as we're heading down the mountain, he lets one one
- 23:58Speaker 1: bugle and that an elk all the way across the
- 24:03Speaker 1: drainage on the other side of the creek. Um bugles,
- 24:07Speaker 1: So we work our way even further down, all the
- 24:10Speaker 1: way down and uh so we're like, okay, we got
- 24:13Speaker 1: across the creek. We're gonna get up into the next
- 24:15Speaker 1: drainage and we're gonna go chase that bowl, because that's
- 24:18Speaker 1: kind of that was our strategy, try to get one
- 24:20Speaker 1: to bugle and go chase it. Right, So, were you
- 24:24Speaker 1: kind of doing what you and me had wanted to do,
- 24:26Speaker 1: I would never have the right opportunity. But basically, hear one,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you just get as close as you think you can
- 24:31Speaker 1: and then call if you think you're right in their business. Yep, absolutely,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and this is where it's good. All right. So we
- 24:41Speaker 1: were heading down, we're getting right across the creek. We're
- 24:43Speaker 1: probably about a hund yards from the creek, and there's
- 24:46Speaker 1: another bugle that just rips off right back from where
- 24:51Speaker 1: we just came from. And Adam goes, I bet you
- 24:55Speaker 1: anything that bowl bugled in his bed. So we bugle
- 25:01Speaker 1: again and he he responds. Again, We bugle again, he responds.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So we're now we're trying to locate him and if
- 25:08Speaker 1: he's coming from the exact same spot, right, and he's like,
- 25:13Speaker 1: let's go, this one's closer, let's go get him. Go
- 25:16Speaker 1: back up the mountain. We get into and as we're
- 25:20Speaker 1: as we're getting closer, so like every hundred yards every
- 25:22Speaker 1: two yards we bugle, and it's coming from the same
- 25:26Speaker 1: exact spot, and this dark timber is so thick and
- 25:29Speaker 1: nasty you can't see. You can't even see fifty yards
- 25:32Speaker 1: in front of you, right, So we're getting really aggressive
- 25:37Speaker 1: and we're going right straight towards this bugle. And the
- 25:42Speaker 1: good thing about how this all played out was with
- 25:45Speaker 1: the cloud cover and a slight drizzle the afternoon, thermals
- 25:51Speaker 1: were coming down. They weren't going up because it was cooler,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and the rain kind of was pushing the thermals down. Uh,
- 26:00Speaker 1: it was kind of it wasn't raining, but it was
- 26:02Speaker 1: kind of sprinkling. Thermals were going down, and and we
- 26:08Speaker 1: were getting closer, and we're getting closer, and now now
- 26:12Speaker 1: we're so close that when he bugles, you can feel it,
- 26:16Speaker 1: like I'm like, you could feel it in your skin.
- 26:21Speaker 1: When that high pitch part of the bugle goes, your
- 26:24Speaker 1: ears just kind of tickle a little bit, like that's
- 26:28Speaker 1: how close we were. Right. So we get up to
- 26:30Speaker 1: this spot, and by the grace of God, there is
- 26:33Speaker 1: an opening right there, right there in the um in
- 26:38Speaker 1: this dark, thick, dead fall timber, and it's offering a
- 26:42Speaker 1: shooting lane of like twenty to thirty yards and uh,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and Adam goes, okay, you set up here, Dan, you
- 26:50Speaker 1: flank over here, and um, I'm gonna drop back and
- 26:53Speaker 1: start calling. So Ryan got first shot until he actually
- 26:57Speaker 1: let an arrow go? Or were you guys eating on
- 27:00Speaker 1: every setup? Not every setup? First shot? Just like the
- 27:03Speaker 1: first shot. So we're gonna we're gonna get into position,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and um the first every time we put Ryan in
- 27:12Speaker 1: like the first until he got a shot. It was
- 27:14Speaker 1: Ryan's shot. That was a high stakes game of rock
- 27:18Speaker 1: paper scissors. I know that could have been the whole trip.
- 27:21Speaker 1: You might have had him leading off. Yeah, it could
- 27:23Speaker 1: have been. So did you have any strategy when he
- 27:26Speaker 1: went into that rock paper sciss or just go with
- 27:28Speaker 1: your gut? I just I just threw. I didn't even
- 27:31Speaker 1: think about it, because you think about it and then
- 27:33Speaker 1: you start messing up. Yeah, but in retrospect, now that
- 27:35Speaker 1: you lost, do you think you should have approached it
- 27:37Speaker 1: with any different ideas or tactics? Probably? I don't know.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I really wasn't thinking about I just I was like, Okay,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I don't have a quarter in my pocket. Let's think
- 27:47Speaker 1: of a fairway. A fair way to do this. So
- 27:50Speaker 1: paper rock scissors one out of one. That's all it was.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That's that's high stakes. Okay, Yeah, so Ryan's up to bat.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Ryan's up to bat. I dropped down a little bit lower,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and I come around to another little clearing that's about
- 28:06Speaker 1: the size of a small bedroom. I mean, if the
- 28:10Speaker 1: elk was gonna come my way, it would have, he
- 28:12Speaker 1: would have I would have shot him at ten yards
- 28:14Speaker 1: type of deal. So Adam drops back behind Ryan down
- 28:21Speaker 1: the down the mountain and he starts taking sticks and
- 28:25Speaker 1: branches and ship and just cracking him and throwing logs
- 28:29Speaker 1: and beating him and bugling and cow calling, and so
- 28:34Speaker 1: what he was doing is sounding like he was running
- 28:36Speaker 1: around gathering up some cows. That's what if I had
- 28:39Speaker 1: to guess, that's what it sounded like. And every time
- 28:44Speaker 1: he bugled, and now you know, we've pushed into about
- 28:48Speaker 1: fifty yards of this elk, right, I can't see him yet.
- 28:52Speaker 1: We know he's above us, but we can't see him yet.
- 28:55Speaker 1: And he's hammering these bugles and everyone is just like
- 28:59Speaker 1: a you know, like just crazy. And I'm telling you man,
- 29:07Speaker 1: to all the listeners out there, if you ever get
- 29:09Speaker 1: the opportunity to go on at elk hunt. It's gonna
- 29:12Speaker 1: be brutal. That just depends on where you go. But
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's like what we did. It's brutal, it's physical, it's
- 29:18Speaker 1: it's a mental game. But if you get the opportunity
- 29:22Speaker 1: to hear an elk bugle as close as we did,
- 29:25Speaker 1: you will think about it every single day for the
- 29:28Speaker 1: rest of your life. Dude, I'm telling you, it was
- 29:31Speaker 1: a life changing event. It's it's so awesome, and right there,
- 29:39Speaker 1: right in the middle of dance story, I'm gonna stop
- 29:41Speaker 1: us and take a quick break to think. Our partners
- 29:43Speaker 1: at Onyx, they're the makers of the Onyx Hunt app,
- 29:47Speaker 1: which I've been mentioning each week for a while now,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and I've been using each week for a while now.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Now the hunting seas is kicked off, that's just gonna continue.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I was using in Montana, as I told you about,
- 29:59Speaker 1: while I was actually going in and out hunting and
- 30:01Speaker 1: when I was tracking that buck. I'm going to be
- 30:03Speaker 1: using it next week when I'm going to hunt elk
- 30:05Speaker 1: in Montana. I'll be using it two weeks after that
- 30:08Speaker 1: when I kick off my white tail season here in
- 30:10Speaker 1: Michigan hunting. This new property I've got permission on and
- 30:14Speaker 1: my main holy field property tracking, different stand locations, tracking
- 30:18Speaker 1: in and out access routes, all that kind of stuff.
- 30:21Speaker 1: When I head up to Minnesota the Boundary waters Hunt,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I'll be using it then a ton leading up to
- 30:26Speaker 1: that as I'm still trying to figure out where the
- 30:28Speaker 1: heck to go. That's a story for another day. But
- 30:31Speaker 1: long story, short on this is that app is a
- 30:34Speaker 1: great tool to use on your phone or your computer,
- 30:37Speaker 1: wherever you might be. It's got top all maps, it's
- 30:40Speaker 1: got aerial maps, it has property information, property owner information,
- 30:43Speaker 1: it has public land parcel borders and information. You can
- 30:47Speaker 1: mark your locations, you can mark your tracks, you can
- 30:50Speaker 1: measure distances, you can measure areas. I could go on
- 30:53Speaker 1: and on, needless to say, it's something worth checking out
- 30:57Speaker 1: if you're interested in getting a membership or downloading some
- 31:01Speaker 1: of their specific state maps. You can't get off using
- 31:04Speaker 1: the promo code wired that's w I R E D.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And you can get the Onyx Hunt app at your
- 31:10Speaker 1: favorite mobile store, where you can learn more over at
- 31:13Speaker 1: onyx maps dot com. So anyway, I'm so I hear
- 31:19Speaker 1: some cracking, like so like he's up on his feet
- 31:22Speaker 1: now or something. So I dropped. I kind of dropped
- 31:25Speaker 1: down a little bit. So I'm way low and I'm
- 31:26Speaker 1: trying to look under this dead fall, so I can't
- 31:29Speaker 1: see Ryan anymore. But every time, every time Adam bugles
- 31:34Speaker 1: or calls, this bowl is responding and he's bugling again,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and like I said, it's a glorious thing. So so
- 31:41Speaker 1: as Adams calling the next bugle sounded like it was
- 31:45Speaker 1: further away, maybe he stood up or turned around, so
- 31:50Speaker 1: I thought, oh my god, this you know, there's a
- 31:52Speaker 1: herd of cows or something and he's heading heading off
- 31:55Speaker 1: with the cows or whatever. And just as I thought that,
- 32:00Speaker 1: Adam did one hell of a calling sequence, like break
- 32:03Speaker 1: some sticks and break the tree and made a bugle
- 32:07Speaker 1: and some cow calls, and he turned around and now
- 32:10Speaker 1: I could look up and I could see the tops
- 32:13Speaker 1: of his antlers. He was really close, still still responding
- 32:17Speaker 1: with every bugle that h Ryan or excuse me that
- 32:21Speaker 1: to Adam set out and I can see his the
- 32:24Speaker 1: tops of his antlers. I could see part of his head,
- 32:26Speaker 1: but that was it. And he's like he swaying them
- 32:29Speaker 1: back and forth, almost like a moose does. It was weird.
- 32:32Speaker 1: He just like really really uh, I don't know, like
- 32:38Speaker 1: he was showing off to somebody almost yeah. Um, from
- 32:43Speaker 1: what I could see, like every elk is huge to me,
- 32:46Speaker 1: you know what I mean, it's and and plus it
- 32:49Speaker 1: was really thick and nasty, so it's not like I
- 32:50Speaker 1: had a perfect clear shot at him. So and then
- 32:55Speaker 1: I could hear him stomping and pollen, so it was
- 32:57Speaker 1: almost like he was freaking pissed, really really piste off.
- 33:02Speaker 1: And something happened and all of a sudden, he just
- 33:05Speaker 1: committed and it sounded like a car being pushed through
- 33:09Speaker 1: the woods through the timber, just cracking and coming through.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It wasn't even like he was trying to go around
- 33:15Speaker 1: anything but straight through it. And then there was this
- 33:19Speaker 1: moment of silence and I heard and I I knew
- 33:25Speaker 1: that what that sound was, and that was Ryan uh
- 33:29Speaker 1: letting an arrow go. Yeah, And so I put my
- 33:33Speaker 1: arrow back quick in my quiver. I run up and
- 33:36Speaker 1: there I see Ryan like looking back at me like
- 33:39Speaker 1: he just seen a ghost type of deal, you know,
- 33:41Speaker 1: like because he killed he killed an elk before, like
- 33:44Speaker 1: six years ago with a rifle on a private ranch
- 33:47Speaker 1: something you know, almost like shooting fishing a barrel type
- 33:50Speaker 1: of thing, and he and Ryan was like, I hit him.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I hit him. I'm like, did you hit him? Did
- 33:58Speaker 1: you like I hit him? I hit him? And so
- 34:01Speaker 1: we we we just kind of wait for Adam to
- 34:04Speaker 1: come up, because Adam didn't know what happened. And I said,
- 34:08Speaker 1: what which way did he run? He's like, he ran
- 34:10Speaker 1: that way. But then I lost him. And remember this
- 34:12Speaker 1: is some of the thickest, nastiest ship that I've ever witnessed, right,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and so if you walk fifty yards ahead of someone,
- 34:21Speaker 1: you're lost. So we I start whistling for Adam. Adam
- 34:26Speaker 1: comes up, We kind of gather ourselves. We say, okay,
- 34:29Speaker 1: where did you Where do you think you hit him?
- 34:30Speaker 1: And Ryan goes, I think I hit him a little
- 34:33Speaker 1: forward but high um to where I think I got
- 34:37Speaker 1: high long. And I'm like, dude, if you got high long, man,
- 34:40Speaker 1: we're in business, man, We're in business. And so we
- 34:46Speaker 1: wait just like two minutes, three minutes, and then we
- 34:48Speaker 1: start making our way to the impact where and this
- 34:51Speaker 1: this was inside twenty yards where he had this shot,
- 34:55Speaker 1: so probably closer to fifteen if I had to guess.
- 34:58Speaker 1: But he hit him just a little bit high, he
- 35:02Speaker 1: thought because I didn't I wasn't able to see the
- 35:04Speaker 1: shot or the impact. Um. At once this once this
- 35:08Speaker 1: elk came down the side of the mountain towards Ryan.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I lost all all side of him and it was
- 35:13Speaker 1: just my hearing from then on. And so we we
- 35:17Speaker 1: kind of looking. We're looking on the ground. Nothing, We're
- 35:20Speaker 1: looking on, you know, for some stumps. Nothing, and then
- 35:25Speaker 1: Ryan finds a zero and it's broken off and total penetration.
- 35:31Speaker 1: And this is generous, probably about four inches maybe less.
- 35:37Speaker 1: So what we're thinking is we hit the shoulder and
- 35:45Speaker 1: he was shooting a mechanical broadhead and it it hit
- 35:50Speaker 1: it and it just stopped basically through the meat of
- 35:52Speaker 1: the front shoulder, hit the hit the bone and just
- 35:55Speaker 1: stopped right there. But we did our due diligence and
- 35:59Speaker 1: we we we grid searched for minutes. No blood, no
- 36:05Speaker 1: unturned like upturned soil or anything from where we could
- 36:09Speaker 1: see him running. And long story short, that was the uh.
- 36:15Speaker 1: That was Ryan's first archery shot at a at an elk.
- 36:19Speaker 1: And um, there's nothing you say to a guy after that.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You know, I could have sat there and be like, hey, sport,
- 36:24Speaker 1: it's gonna be okay. You know, keep your head up
- 36:26Speaker 1: ship like that. It's like you had an opportunity like
- 36:31Speaker 1: that and he you just it didn't it didn't happen, right, So,
- 36:37Speaker 1: so so we're talking about We're like, Ryan, what do
- 36:40Speaker 1: you think this? What do you think this bowl? How
- 36:42Speaker 1: big was he? And Ryan goes, I don't. I don't
- 36:45Speaker 1: know too much about ELK, but I'm staying somewhere between
- 36:48Speaker 1: two fifty and three. And then he starts to describe
- 36:52Speaker 1: the characteristics and he said, all I know is I
- 36:55Speaker 1: saw the end of one of his and they I
- 36:57Speaker 1: guess they call him a whale tail. The whale tail,
- 37:01Speaker 1: so I guess the whale tail is something that's predominant
- 37:04Speaker 1: on six by six is so Adam thinks it was
- 37:08Speaker 1: bigger than that. Um so maybe I don't know between
- 37:13Speaker 1: three class bowl. So and from what I saw it
- 37:20Speaker 1: it was it wasn't like hugely wide, but they were
- 37:24Speaker 1: really tall from what I can see, or well kind
- 37:28Speaker 1: of they flare back, I don't know. So from what
- 37:31Speaker 1: I could see, so it was it was a good
- 37:33Speaker 1: decent bowl and it just didn't happen. Sounds like a
- 37:38Speaker 1: very exciting day, but that is that is the ultimate bummer. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Now here's something that I was I knew I wasn't
- 37:48Speaker 1: necessarily a shooter, but there was a chance that if
- 37:51Speaker 1: this elp came around the other way, I would have
- 37:54Speaker 1: had a shot on him. And for some reason, I
- 37:57Speaker 1: was not fire it up like I would have been
- 38:02Speaker 1: if I was deer hunting for some reason, like when
- 38:05Speaker 1: that when that deer shows up and and you're I
- 38:09Speaker 1: don't know, you're already you're you get buck fever, I guess,
- 38:14Speaker 1: or you get that huge adrenaline dump like I know
- 38:16Speaker 1: what's gonna happen, and I know I'm drawn back. I
- 38:18Speaker 1: didn't get that. I was really clear, and that was
- 38:22Speaker 1: strange to me. Do you think that was more because
- 38:25Speaker 1: of the scenario, you know, outcutting different species, different place,
- 38:29Speaker 1: or was it more because you knew that you were
- 38:32Speaker 1: runner up? Well? I think a lot. I think a
- 38:35Speaker 1: lot of it has has to do with I think
- 38:37Speaker 1: for for deer hunting, you have a real low heart
- 38:40Speaker 1: rate and then it goes to a real high heart rate.
- 38:43Speaker 1: My heart rate was already up right from climbing up
- 38:46Speaker 1: the mountain, so it's not like if I had an
- 38:49Speaker 1: adrenaline rushed my heart was gonna do anything more than
- 38:51Speaker 1: what it was already doing, you know what I mean.
- 38:54Speaker 1: So I don't know. I just I was clear, I
- 38:58Speaker 1: was ready, and I was focused. So that's nuts. I
- 39:01Speaker 1: thought I was gonna be like losing my ship. Yeah,
- 39:04Speaker 1: now that doesn't mean you couldn't lose your ship litter
- 39:07Speaker 1: in the trip, possibly, right right right, So tell me
- 39:12Speaker 1: what happens next. I'm gonna fast forward today three alright,
- 39:16Speaker 1: So day two we go back to the same area.
- 39:18Speaker 1: We hear two bugles, We chase them, nothing happens. We
- 39:23Speaker 1: have an encounter with a calf. Uh, nobody takes a
- 39:27Speaker 1: shot at it, just because you know, I mean, in
- 39:31Speaker 1: in light of what just happened the day before, we
- 39:34Speaker 1: felt like we had hit something right right, and then
- 39:40Speaker 1: Adam had to head back into town, uh, to his
- 39:43Speaker 1: house to meet someone for get internet set up in
- 39:47Speaker 1: his new house. So me and Ryan were kind of
- 39:49Speaker 1: on our own. We had our on X maps, we were,
- 39:52Speaker 1: you know, looking at where we needed to go. Oh
- 39:55Speaker 1: my god. We had a hike that went from ten
- 39:59Speaker 1: to eleven one and it was straight up and it
- 40:03Speaker 1: was literally one of the most punishing things and growing
- 40:07Speaker 1: things I have ever physically done in my entire life. Period.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I I don't know how many calories reburned, but it
- 40:17Speaker 1: was I mean, I was losing my mind, climbing this
- 40:21Speaker 1: like mental failure, getting mad, getting angry because we were
- 40:25Speaker 1: going up the same dead fall, but we were up
- 40:29Speaker 1: the same deadfall, but we were going at like a
- 40:32Speaker 1: forty degree angle. Do you think this this one sucked?
- 40:35Speaker 1: This watch that Ryan had that told you your exact elevation,
- 40:38Speaker 1: do you think that was a blessing or curse? Because
- 40:41Speaker 1: I could see it being a little scary or a
- 40:42Speaker 1: little bit. Uh. Every time you actually look at that number, like,
- 40:45Speaker 1: oh god, we've gone seven, we've gonet that much. Did
- 40:49Speaker 1: that make misery more exaggerated? Uh? Not necessarily, because I
- 40:56Speaker 1: wouldn't ask him until we were done with the punishment, right,
- 40:59Speaker 1: I ever asked before, because whenever Adam said, hey, we
- 41:03Speaker 1: just gotta pop up this ridge, like that's what someone
- 41:06Speaker 1: who lives out there says. Uh. If I was up
- 41:09Speaker 1: there and I was going to tell somebody what we
- 41:11Speaker 1: had to do, I would look at him straight in
- 41:13Speaker 1: the face and I would say, I'm going to try
- 41:15Speaker 1: to kill you right now. So that's what that punishment
- 41:21Speaker 1: was like. And we um, you know, we went back
- 41:25Speaker 1: down the mountain. Uh we he went, he went home.
- 41:29Speaker 1: We went kind of up a little bit up to
- 41:32Speaker 1: a different drainage, worked our way down and uh man,
- 41:35Speaker 1: I was beat after that day. Got up the next morning,
- 41:39Speaker 1: got into the truck and we went to a completely
- 41:41Speaker 1: different part of the mountain and we walked into this
- 41:46Speaker 1: little secluded drainage slash meadow and it was one of
- 41:51Speaker 1: the most beautiful things. Like the sun's coming up over
- 41:55Speaker 1: the mountains and it's just beautiful, a light, there's some
- 41:59Speaker 1: clouds the air, no bugles, but and this is a
- 42:05Speaker 1: learning experience for me, and it's something that I made
- 42:08Speaker 1: a mistake one time during this trip, and I didn't
- 42:10Speaker 1: make it again. So you hike in and just your
- 42:12Speaker 1: bass layers because you're sweating balls by the time you
- 42:15Speaker 1: get to where you went. And I felt, hey, I'm
- 42:19Speaker 1: still gonna be hot in twenty minutes or ten minutes.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I'm just gonna sit here in my bass layers. And
- 42:25Speaker 1: while Adams drops back, you know, drops back and calls,
- 42:28Speaker 1: and I'm so now I'm up to bat first, right,
- 42:31Speaker 1: So I get the I guess what you would call
- 42:33Speaker 1: the favor favorable position, and we're looking across this drainage
- 42:38Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, thirty yards from where I'm sitting
- 42:42Speaker 1: to the opposite side, so it was kind of steep
- 42:44Speaker 1: on both sides, so if something came out, you could
- 42:46Speaker 1: you could shoot across the drainage at it. And I
- 42:51Speaker 1: set up and I started getting cold, and my backpacks
- 42:53Speaker 1: behind a tree, so I get out, and as I
- 42:56Speaker 1: stand up and turn around, I hear something on the
- 42:59Speaker 1: other side take off and run away. And I'm just like,
- 43:02Speaker 1: I just screwed up, like a potential opportunity, because you know,
- 43:07Speaker 1: we could hear elk across the drainage, like just working
- 43:11Speaker 1: around in there, walking back and forth and stuff. And
- 43:14Speaker 1: then I started shivering because I was cold, so I
- 43:18Speaker 1: needed to go get some more layers on. So I
- 43:20Speaker 1: stood up and walked around the tree and there must
- 43:22Speaker 1: have been something close on the other side that busted
- 43:25Speaker 1: me and it took off running fast. Forward about twenty
- 43:29Speaker 1: more minutes and we all meet up back behind these trees,
- 43:34Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, we hear something run off
- 43:37Speaker 1: and we look and it's a cow had stuck up
- 43:40Speaker 1: behind us. So our bows are all down on the
- 43:42Speaker 1: ground and Ryan goes, oh, man, there's another there's another
- 43:46Speaker 1: cow coming right at us. And it wasn't a cow,
- 43:51Speaker 1: it was a bull. And if I thought that the
- 43:55Speaker 1: bull on day one was huge, you could have put
- 43:59Speaker 1: that bowls rack into this bulls rack. It was. And
- 44:05Speaker 1: I feel I don't know shit about scoring, and I
- 44:07Speaker 1: don't know anything, so I'm not going to try to
- 44:09Speaker 1: say a score. But I've watched in my day a
- 44:12Speaker 1: lot of YouTube videos and stuff, and I would put
- 44:16Speaker 1: this elk up there with any other elk I've seen
- 44:20Speaker 1: on TV. Uh. Just gigantic. And it it came in
- 44:27Speaker 1: silent behind us, and we looked and I grabbed my
- 44:31Speaker 1: bow and knock an arrow and I'm getting ready to
- 44:32Speaker 1: draw and it runs away. It wasn't like I had
- 44:36Speaker 1: a shot anyway, but it was one of those things
- 44:39Speaker 1: where it's just like I got to see it. It's
- 44:43Speaker 1: like it made eye contact with me. Was it was
- 44:46Speaker 1: mind blowing lee huge. And again I'm from Iowa. I've
- 44:50Speaker 1: seen now at this point in my life, I've seen
- 44:53Speaker 1: two bowl elk somewhat close right in real life. So
- 44:58Speaker 1: it could have been a three inch and the other
- 45:00Speaker 1: one could have been a you know, a two fifty,
- 45:03Speaker 1: but I know it was big and I was just
- 45:06Speaker 1: jacked up about it, and like, so if that, if
- 45:10Speaker 1: if it ended right there, I would call that a
- 45:12Speaker 1: successful trip. But we had we had five more days
- 45:15Speaker 1: to go. Unfortunately, this is where everything slows down, not
- 45:19Speaker 1: another bugle. It got warm and the weather turned nice,
- 45:25Speaker 1: and we bounced around every day and every day was
- 45:30Speaker 1: just basically hiking and setting up on fresh sign and
- 45:36Speaker 1: doing our due diligence and grinding and grinding and grinding,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and unfortunately nothing happened. Yeah, it sounds like a pretty
- 45:45Speaker 1: awesome trip though, those first few days, like you just said,
- 45:49Speaker 1: makes for them for success, right right. I'm telling you,
- 45:52Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, I will go elk hunting
- 45:54Speaker 1: every year for the rest of my life. Yeah. It
- 45:58Speaker 1: gets in your blood. Yeah, it's ridiculous. It's fun. And
- 46:02Speaker 1: it was not only the hardest thing I've ever had
- 46:04Speaker 1: to do physically, but like I was better prepared mentally
- 46:10Speaker 1: for this time because I remembered what that punishment breathing
- 46:14Speaker 1: was like. So it was like I had time to
- 46:16Speaker 1: prepare for So it's like I knew what I was
- 46:19Speaker 1: getting into. Yeah. That helps that helps a lot. So
- 46:23Speaker 1: long story short, dude, that's my that's my Colorado trip
- 46:27Speaker 1: in a nutshell. It was long, but I'm glad that
- 46:30Speaker 1: you've got that experience, though I felt so bad after
- 46:33Speaker 1: our trip. I've been talking it up so much and
- 46:35Speaker 1: telling me about how the year before was nuts and
- 46:37Speaker 1: having those moments like you described, and it obviously didn't
- 46:40Speaker 1: pan out for us on that one, but now you know, yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 1: now you know it was nuts, dude. And I just
- 46:47Speaker 1: it's one of those things where I've said it before
- 46:49Speaker 1: and I'll say it again. I wish everybody has the
- 46:54Speaker 1: opportunity to experience something like that, because white tail hunting
- 46:57Speaker 1: is one thing, but when you have eight hundred pound animal,
- 47:02Speaker 1: nine pound animal running around making the loudest noises you've
- 47:06Speaker 1: ever heard, it's an experience in itself. Dude. Yeah, I'm
- 47:13Speaker 1: glad we're having this conversation because I leave for an
- 47:17Speaker 1: elk hunt next week. And I mean, I wasn't I'm
- 47:21Speaker 1: not even really, at least not until now. I haven't
- 47:23Speaker 1: been the extcited about it. I've been looking forward to
- 47:26Speaker 1: whitetail stuff in October. I'm like playing all this stuff
- 47:28Speaker 1: out and and I'm kind of overtraveled a little bit,
- 47:32Speaker 1: so just kind of burnt out and kind of just
- 47:34Speaker 1: wanted to spend some family time. You know, I was
- 47:36Speaker 1: gone for the last eleven days and I'm home for
- 47:39Speaker 1: like six, and I've just been thinking, Man, I wish
- 47:41Speaker 1: I didn't schedule this trip right after that. I really
- 47:43Speaker 1: would just like, you know, two, three, four weeks at
- 47:45Speaker 1: home instead of six days. But um, all that aside,
- 47:51Speaker 1: you did give me a new bump of excitement for
- 47:54Speaker 1: that that bugle and that bugle and fest that hopefully
- 47:57Speaker 1: I'll be experiencing here next week. So thank you for that.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I'll tell you though, it was tough. You know, I
- 48:03Speaker 1: hadn't been on a big, big trip like this, Like
- 48:07Speaker 1: I've been to the A T a show that's like
- 48:08Speaker 1: basically a three day event. But I was gone a
- 48:11Speaker 1: total of let's see, I left on the thirty first
- 48:15Speaker 1: and I got back on the it would have been
- 48:19Speaker 1: the eight So I was gone eight days from my family,
- 48:23Speaker 1: and it's it sucked. I mean, I'm not gonna lie
- 48:27Speaker 1: at man. I didn't. I wouldn't say I got homesick,
- 48:31Speaker 1: but I missed my kids and I missed my wife.
- 48:33Speaker 1: So being able to come home and see them again
- 48:35Speaker 1: was that's very enjoyable. Yeah, yeah, I could definitely relate
- 48:39Speaker 1: to you more on that now on this trip, and
- 48:41Speaker 1: definitely was feeling that it was different knowing that Everett
- 48:45Speaker 1: was back home and not, you know, just not being
- 48:47Speaker 1: a part of the daily life with him. And I
- 48:50Speaker 1: loved getting pictures and videos and stuff that my wife
- 48:52Speaker 1: was sending. But then that also is just like I
- 48:54Speaker 1: just want to be there. Um. So it's definitely different,
- 48:59Speaker 1: and and like I said, I'm not looking forward to
- 49:02Speaker 1: leaving again right away. But but that's my elk hunt.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I want to know a little bit about this North
- 49:09Speaker 1: Dakota trip because you were obviously your successful in Montana
- 49:12Speaker 1: and you crossed the border. What happened? Yeah, so I
- 49:16Speaker 1: had that great hunt in Montana. And sorry that we're
- 49:19Speaker 1: not getting to talk about it at all, um, but
- 49:21Speaker 1: you know we already talked about with further and Spencer.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Anything you need to know that you don't know about
- 49:26Speaker 1: that that we should cover in two minutes. Here, are
- 49:28Speaker 1: you good? Well, I'll just ask you for the coordinates
- 49:30Speaker 1: after recording. Yeah, how much you got in your savings account, dance.
- 49:37Speaker 1: We might be able to negotiate something, okay, we will
- 49:41Speaker 1: not be able to negotiate something, okay. So I killed
- 49:44Speaker 1: my Blucome Montana. Um, I'm driving towards North Dakota on
- 49:48Speaker 1: that first day and I actually get kind of sick
- 49:51Speaker 1: in the car. Or maybe maybe it was more that
- 49:54Speaker 1: was really exhausted. Um, I think at that point I
- 49:57Speaker 1: was just not feeling great. He end I had to
- 50:01Speaker 1: get a podcast up and do all this kind of
- 50:02Speaker 1: stuff and long story shore, I'm like, you know what,
- 50:04Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get to camp tonight. I'm just gonna
- 50:06Speaker 1: get in a hotel room. I'm gonna get this work done.
- 50:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna shower. You know, it's all bloody and gross
- 50:12Speaker 1: after having gutted and recovered that deer that day. So yeah,
- 50:15Speaker 1: I get to the hotel room, ended up like getting
- 50:17Speaker 1: like nauseous and horrible headache and like pass out like
- 50:20Speaker 1: eight thirty that night in the hotel. Next day, get up,
- 50:24Speaker 1: get some more work done, start driving in North Dakota.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I don't end up getting to our spot in North
- 50:29Speaker 1: Dakota util that evening at like six o'clock in the evening,
- 50:32Speaker 1: so I can't hunt that night. Um, Josh is out hunting.
- 50:35Speaker 1: So I decided I'm just gonna get out there and
- 50:38Speaker 1: get up on one of these big bluffs that overlooks
- 50:40Speaker 1: this river bottom that we're hunting, and see what I
- 50:44Speaker 1: could see, just try to get eyes on something. Because
- 50:46Speaker 1: Josh had been there hunting for three days and up
- 50:48Speaker 1: to this point he had not seen hardly anything. He
- 50:51Speaker 1: had seen I think one year and a half old
- 50:53Speaker 1: buck and a handful of dose every day. And he
- 50:57Speaker 1: then had been he had been up on the on
- 50:58Speaker 1: the hills glassing in them warnings, trying to see, like
- 51:01Speaker 1: we're all these deer and was not seeing the number
- 51:04Speaker 1: of deer that we were expecting. But he was seeing
- 51:06Speaker 1: some other hunters. Um, there was there wasn't any other
- 51:09Speaker 1: white tail hunters, but there was guys out there chasing
- 51:12Speaker 1: you know, other western species, mules whatever. Um. Now, Charlie interrupt,
- 51:17Speaker 1: but this is the same area that you guys went
- 51:21Speaker 1: shed hunting at the spring. Yes, we found we found
- 51:25Speaker 1: a good number of sheds in there, and we scouted
- 51:27Speaker 1: it and we saw a good sign um. So it
- 51:29Speaker 1: looked really good, like we had really high hopes for
- 51:31Speaker 1: the spot. Um. But Josh's time there was not showing
- 51:35Speaker 1: anything good. I show up, I sit in this butte
- 51:38Speaker 1: I started glassing. I don't see crap. I just see
- 51:41Speaker 1: a couple of does, and I can see like a
- 51:43Speaker 1: mile in either direction. I mean, I can cover a
- 51:45Speaker 1: big chunk of ground that there. You should be seeing
- 51:49Speaker 1: deer coming out crossing this river, coming out into some
- 51:51Speaker 1: of these openings, moving in around the Cottonwood groves. Nothing,
- 51:56Speaker 1: so that's concerning. That night, we regrouped. Josh hardly saw
- 52:00Speaker 1: anything again that night. The next morning I'm like, all right, well,
- 52:02Speaker 1: I'm not just gonna go sit blindly in an area
- 52:04Speaker 1: where we're not seeing anything. We need to we need
- 52:06Speaker 1: to keep learning, we need to find these deers. So
- 52:08Speaker 1: the next morning again I go to another spot, try
- 52:10Speaker 1: to glass that again, don't see anything. So after like
- 52:13Speaker 1: an hour, I screwed out of there and I start
- 52:16Speaker 1: driving rhads trying to see are there any deer in
- 52:19Speaker 1: any these Are there some private land fields that are
- 52:21Speaker 1: pulling all the deer? What's going on? Drive around, drive around,
- 52:25Speaker 1: hardly anything at all. So we get back to camp.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Now this is like Josh's day four, I think, and
- 52:34Speaker 1: you know, we're kind of at a loss. He's not
- 52:35Speaker 1: seeing a deer. These two scouting sessions are showing really
- 52:39Speaker 1: really poor numbers. Still haven't seen a single mature buck
- 52:42Speaker 1: and we're down to two days left too, and hap
- 52:44Speaker 1: days left or whatever. Um So, finally that you know,
- 52:48Speaker 1: we're sitting there midday and I kind of had this
- 52:50Speaker 1: idea pop in my head. You know, why, what are
- 52:53Speaker 1: we doing in this kind of area. It's not like
- 52:55Speaker 1: hunting in Michigan or Aisole where there's tons of cover
- 52:58Speaker 1: and you obviously wouldn't see these but sucks if there
- 53:00Speaker 1: were deer in this area. I was pretty confident that
- 53:04Speaker 1: we should see some side of them, like there should
- 53:06Speaker 1: be deer moving. There's not down on the river bottoms.
- 53:09Speaker 1: There weren't a bunch of hunters, so I didn't think
- 53:11Speaker 1: these deer were crazy over pressured if they were in there.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Um So I throughout the ideas. Okay, we instead of
- 53:19Speaker 1: wasting our time here where we've not gotten a single
- 53:21Speaker 1: indication of there being a deer we actually want to
- 53:23Speaker 1: hunt and shoot. Over the last four or five days
- 53:26Speaker 1: or whatever however long Josh had been there, plus since
- 53:27Speaker 1: I was there, what if we relocate, What if we
- 53:33Speaker 1: spend Yeah, we're sacrificing some sits, but what if we
- 53:35Speaker 1: just keep looking until we actually find a deer we
- 53:37Speaker 1: want to shoot and then make a move on those deer.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Right now, we're not seeing anything that there really is
- 53:41Speaker 1: indicative of of worthwhile time spend the treats, you know,
- 53:45Speaker 1: actually trying to fill tagg at least. So I had
- 53:47Speaker 1: seen some other public land a couple hours north of here.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Then it looked really good in the maps in the past.
- 53:52Speaker 1: I've never been there, but it looked good, and there
- 53:54Speaker 1: was a lot of food. It looked like food sources
- 53:57Speaker 1: fields that was on the public land. Or jay us
- 54:00Speaker 1: into that public land. I thought, you know, that's that's
- 54:02Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that's kind of give me this
- 54:03Speaker 1: time year. At least it is like a much more
- 54:05Speaker 1: sure sign um than what we had here. There was
- 54:08Speaker 1: no food by where we're hunting in this spot. Um,
- 54:12Speaker 1: So I thought, let's go back to the well. I know,
- 54:15Speaker 1: this is like a tried and true strategy that's worked
- 54:18Speaker 1: for me. It worked for me in Montana. Find public
- 54:20Speaker 1: land betting that's close to private land food, get up
- 54:23Speaker 1: in there, um and and try to get eyes on
- 54:26Speaker 1: something that says, yes, there are deer here, and then
- 54:28Speaker 1: hunt the public behind him. So so, after mulling it
- 54:32Speaker 1: over for a little bit, we finally decided, you know,
- 54:33Speaker 1: let's swing for the fences. Let's try it, and we
- 54:35Speaker 1: would only have we were going to drive up there
- 54:37Speaker 1: that night and have that night and the next morning
- 54:40Speaker 1: to do some scouting, and then we would hunt the
- 54:42Speaker 1: next night and next morning, and then we had to go. Yeah,
- 54:45Speaker 1: so we do the drive, We get up there, we
- 54:47Speaker 1: have an hour to drive around that night, drive around
- 54:49Speaker 1: the back roads around this public land. It looks really good,
- 54:52Speaker 1: and I end up finding a field with a whole
- 54:54Speaker 1: bunch of deer in it that's on public land. And
- 54:57Speaker 1: I get my spotting scope out and I see a
- 54:59Speaker 1: couple pretty bus that possibly would be a shooter for me,
- 55:03Speaker 1: for sure be a shooter for josh Um. So I'm like,
- 55:06Speaker 1: all right, bingo, this is exactly what I wanted to see.
- 55:09Speaker 1: We've got a huntable area with huntable deer um, and
- 55:14Speaker 1: you know, you know, we've actually got something to work
- 55:15Speaker 1: with here versus what we had before. So I felt
- 55:18Speaker 1: great about that. The next day we went in, scouted
- 55:20Speaker 1: another area in the morning, and hung stands midday for
- 55:24Speaker 1: the next morning. Really cool stuff. But the most interesting
- 55:28Speaker 1: and important stuff happened that night. We go and sneak
- 55:30Speaker 1: into that spot where I saw those bucks. We had
- 55:33Speaker 1: a pretty good wind, what looked like it's gonna be
- 55:35Speaker 1: pretty good wind for this spot. I had seen most
- 55:38Speaker 1: of this deer come out of kind of this inside
- 55:40Speaker 1: corner of this field, and and they're feeding out within
- 55:43Speaker 1: sight of a road in daylight, which was interesting. I mean,
- 55:48Speaker 1: it told me that they weren't getting hunted. So I
- 55:50Speaker 1: felt pretty good about our chances going into the next day.
- 55:52Speaker 1: They probably do something pretty similar, since they didn't seem
- 55:55Speaker 1: like they were, you know, particularly worried about hunters, and
- 55:57Speaker 1: this was almost a weekend to the season there. Um,
- 56:01Speaker 1: So I put Josh. I told Josh, you know, if
- 56:04Speaker 1: you want, I'd probably recommend the best spout would be
- 56:06Speaker 1: the inside corner whemost those deer came out, so he
- 56:08Speaker 1: snuck in there with a stand. I went to another
- 56:11Speaker 1: area farther down the field where I had seen some
- 56:14Speaker 1: of these deer feeding. There weren't any trees, there's grass
- 56:16Speaker 1: and brush. Um, but I thought, I'll just tuck in
- 56:19Speaker 1: that brush, sit in the ground, and hopefully watch Josh
- 56:22Speaker 1: you a deer if something gets past him, or if
- 56:24Speaker 1: something pops on a different spot, I'll back clean up
- 56:27Speaker 1: down here. And the basically gist of that night is
- 56:31Speaker 1: that it went almost exactly like I thought it was
- 56:33Speaker 1: going to. These deer started popping out in that field
- 56:35Speaker 1: really early, like two or three hours before dark. They
- 56:38Speaker 1: were very comfortable. Um. It seemed like the main thing
- 56:41Speaker 1: they were feeding in this field there's some kind of
- 56:43Speaker 1: weed that I'm not familiar with, though it was, but
- 56:46Speaker 1: it looks like they had also just planted some kind
- 56:48Speaker 1: of cover crop, maybe turnips or radishes or something that
- 56:51Speaker 1: were just starting to come out of the ground. And um,
- 56:54Speaker 1: I think that was probably what they're feeding on, because
- 56:56Speaker 1: I know, you know, those those fresh turnip greens or
- 57:00Speaker 1: ratis screens or whatever, that stuff sometimes can be really
- 57:02Speaker 1: attractive right now, Um, so I think that's what they're
- 57:04Speaker 1: keying in on. These deers start piling out. We've seen
- 57:08Speaker 1: a bunch of does. I have a buck come out
- 57:10Speaker 1: close to me that it's like a nice two year old.
- 57:12Speaker 1: He's feeding around, and then that wind shifts completely around
- 57:17Speaker 1: like on a dime, spins around, blows right back into
- 57:20Speaker 1: the cover that we're thinking all these deer better than
- 57:23Speaker 1: all these deers start spooking. I'm here deer blowing behind me.
- 57:27Speaker 1: There was a buck that circled around me. He disappears.
- 57:29Speaker 1: The deer that were out in the field near Josh
- 57:31Speaker 1: went and go taken off, and we're sitting there with
- 57:34Speaker 1: like an hour of daylight left, just defeated, Like, man,
- 57:38Speaker 1: this was setting up perfect. We had made this, you know,
- 57:42Speaker 1: we took this risk, we got to this new spot.
- 57:44Speaker 1: It was working out perfectly. I was thinking like, oh man,
- 57:47Speaker 1: this is amazing. It's gonna work out. And the wind
- 57:51Speaker 1: kind of ruined it. But as daylight continues, somehow more
- 57:56Speaker 1: deer start showing up now with the new wind even
- 57:59Speaker 1: and here comes a buck. Here comes a buck. Here
- 58:02Speaker 1: comes six does, here comes eight does? Here comes another buck.
- 58:06Speaker 1: And while there's this like decent ish buck kind of
- 58:09Speaker 1: near me that I'm watching, I get a text from
- 58:12Speaker 1: Josh saying, I gotta shoot her. It sixty yards or
- 58:15Speaker 1: something I can't get a shot at, you know, really nice.
- 58:17Speaker 1: What was at least a three year old maybe older
- 58:19Speaker 1: buck had come out just out of range from fifty
- 58:23Speaker 1: yards out in front of him, but you know, passing
- 58:25Speaker 1: through some thick stuff and then moved out into the
- 58:27Speaker 1: field at like sixty or seventy. I think it was
- 58:30Speaker 1: a big eight pointer, but a split brow time I think,
- 58:33Speaker 1: is what he said. And so he had that big
- 58:36Speaker 1: buck up in front of like sixty yards for a
- 58:38Speaker 1: long time, never came any closer. He started moving off
- 58:41Speaker 1: than another nice buck came popping out, but at seventy um,
- 58:46Speaker 1: so we found this little honey hoole spot Josh was
- 58:49Speaker 1: just you know, ten fifteen yards off where you know
- 58:52Speaker 1: it would have worked out. He got some serious buck fever.
- 58:55Speaker 1: He had a you know, like an awesome and adrenalin rush.
- 58:57Speaker 1: He was telling me about it afterwards that you know
- 58:58Speaker 1: that that's an awesome feeling to get that first buck
- 59:02Speaker 1: fever of the year. Um. So it made the trip
- 59:05Speaker 1: all worth it, I think, just with that, like just
- 59:06Speaker 1: to have a fun encounter, just so you could see
- 59:08Speaker 1: some deer, because it had been really slow going from
- 59:10Speaker 1: up to that point. So I felt really good about
- 59:13Speaker 1: it because you know, I just wanted him to have
- 59:14Speaker 1: a good time. At this point, I was feeling, you know,
- 59:16Speaker 1: it was all gravy for me. Society already filled my tag.
- 59:19Speaker 1: But that was a fun night close encounters. Next morning,
- 59:22Speaker 1: we went into this spot that we had hunted, that
- 59:24Speaker 1: we had set up the day before, and this was
- 59:26Speaker 1: again this was like a we're just swinging for the fences.
- 59:29Speaker 1: We knew it's early season, we've never been here before,
- 59:32Speaker 1: but we decided we we would almost try like a
- 59:34Speaker 1: bumping dump type thing. We're just gonna plow right into
- 59:37Speaker 1: the thickest best looking like betting, knowing that we're gonna
- 59:41Speaker 1: blow anything out of there as we go into there,
- 59:43Speaker 1: set the stand and just pray that maybe we could
- 59:47Speaker 1: catch them coming back the very next morning, the one
- 59:49Speaker 1: time they come back in before getting all you know,
- 59:52Speaker 1: boogered out of there. Um. It did not work, but
- 59:56Speaker 1: there weren't many better options for that morning set, so
- 59:59Speaker 1: we tried that. That That didn't working, and that was it.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: That was the North Dakota trip. It was, you know,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: a day of it was me recovering, a day of
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: it was almost two days it was scouting around trying
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to find here, and then a day and a half
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: of it was actually hunting. But I'm glad we I'm
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: glad that we spent more time to find those deer
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: versus sitting in a tree and seeing a dough and
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: night in the same spot where we were before, just
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: because we didn't want to try something new. So it
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: was cool, you know, it was cool. Just to be
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: out there, and that was that first kind of trip
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: for for further um. So I think he learned a
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: lot from it, and I think it was just a
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: good experience for him too. And wait, a good time.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: So that was North Dakota and I got back here
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: to Michigan and just trying to get a bunch of
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: stuff done here in my six days. I've got before
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: the elk hunt, um that archery yep archery Montana, and
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: before I continue discussing my last few things I've been
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: up to here in Michigan before that Montana trip, I
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: want to quit break for our last break of this episode,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: to hear from our friends at White Tail Properties. This week.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: With white Tail Properties, we are drawn by Jeff Probes
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: and lands Specialists out of Missouri, and Jeff is going
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: to be talking to us about getting started filming your
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: own hunts. Well, I've filmed personally, my son and I
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: did for a long time. I was involved in it
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: for over twenty years. My son and I filmed together
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: for about fifteen years and uh pretty much retired from
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: it now. But I guess the first thing is is
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: don't skimp, skimp on your equipment. If you're wanting to,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: particularly if you're wanting to try to do something on
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: a professional level, get good quality equipment, obviously high definition cameras.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: The cameras have changed so much since we were in it.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: I mean they've got these small little handheld cameras now
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: that take just about as good a quality footage as
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: the old big cameras we used to carry. And um,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: you know, get good quality footage and get a good mike.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Don't go with an onboard mic on this on the
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: cameras that come with the buy a shotgun mike of
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: good quality. Spend the money, do it right. Use a
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: tree arm when you're in a tree to get nice, smooth,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: steady pans. And when you're on the ground if it's
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: if it's feasibly, use a tripod. Just keep your footage
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: nice and steady, whether you're in a tree or on
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the ground. But the big thing is to don't skimp
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: on equipment. By good stuff and it'll show with your footage.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: The quality will show through. If you'd like to learn
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Jeff currently has
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit white tail properties dot com. Backslash
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: propes that's p r O p s t um and Uh.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I went to that new property I've got permission on
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: the west side of the state today and hung four stands. Um.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: It's very last minute, much later than I usually like to.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: But the guy that's out there, um, that's aweso on
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: this property. He is kind of putsing around a lot
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: of time, checking it out on a on like a
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: gator or like a UTV kind of deal. So he,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of believes that these deer are
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: pretty comfortable with his presence on that as often as
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: he goes through there, so we kind of use that
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: to mask us, you know, getting a tree stand hunk.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: So we went in there with that thing just like
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: he usually does. Left that going hung the stands, got
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: out of there, so, you know, not that much, rarely
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: be getting it done a month ago, but it is
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: what it is. Better to have something going than not. Um,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: So it's good to get that work done. And you know,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: back here on the on the main spot, the holy
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: field spot, I've got no good news. There no pictures
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: of him. Um. I checked one camera and that back
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: food plot where that camera was. The plot is like
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: a dirt field. I don't know what happened, but Braskas
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: aren't coming in like they usually do, so that was
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: a bust and that's kind of where I'm at. Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I got October One's a Sunday this year, so I
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: don't even know if I'm gonna hunt or not, but um,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I think I'm going to. Whether it's gonna be around
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: home or back back at the main farm, it's uh,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: you know, I'm a firm believer of stay out of
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: the timber in September. So I got trail cameras that
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: I've only checked one time this entire summer, and it
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: pisses me off just a little bit that I haven't
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: had the time to go do it. But hopefully that
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: translates into just less pressure on the farm. So we
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: will see. I probably won't check my you know, unless
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I maybe go down there at some time at some point.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I don't think I'm gonna be checking my trail cameras
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: until that first week of first week of October. Yeah, probably,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: like you said, probably a good thing. I've definitely laid
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: off checking summer cameras significantly. Um. I think I checked
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: cameras once I put cameras out beIN of August. Check
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: him once. Just but just like the deer shift, man,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: I always try to get like the last week in August,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: take my trail cameras off of my mineral stations and
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: put them in pinch points and put them in fence
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: crossings and you know, historically good places where maybe a
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: scrape or two might pop up. But I haven't done that,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: so I'm gonna be a little bit behind. I should
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: still be able to go do it before the rut hits,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: but you know, I don't know. Man. Yeah, that's a
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: good point, and I'm not necessarily worried about it. It's
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: just the fact that I won't have like my typical
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: September data that I like to have, you know, once
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: that once the deer go hard horn, they have that shift,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: and I like to catch that shift on trail camera. However,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: this year I seems like I won't. I won't have that. Yeah,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I got more bad news for you. Oh, October one
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is on a Monday. It's on a Monday. It's on
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: a Monday. I love my calendar. Well, son of a gun,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: H want to take the day off? No, dude, here's
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: the thing, here's the just the green light way to
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: get out of a day at work. You call in
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: and you tell your boss diarrhea, you have explosive diarrhea.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: They will they will not question it. They will just
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: try to get off the phone as quickly as possible
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: and you'll be golden. Yeah, summon that up. Eat some
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: chili the night before, so you don't need to lie
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: about it. Boss listens to this. Dude, I wish no
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: he does. Really, Yeah, your boss is a deer hunt. Yeah, dude,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: he he has. He bought this, uh farm out in
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: the country. This is just a real short story. He
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: bought this farm out in the country and every year
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: he's had a boot and crockett on it. And his
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: first buck he's ever shot with a bow is like
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: a one high one fifties did you Iowa, guys, it's
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: not even right. Yep, Wow, this is amazing. So wow
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: something like that. So so he hears all the stuff
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: you talk about and he still keeps you hired. Well,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: it's not like a trash trash anybody you know, Uh,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: the cubical life. It can get to a guy. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: I can. Well, hello to Dan's boss. Thanks for being
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: a fan. Okay, Well, we've kind of ramble on about
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: our hunts. I've got one listener question that I want
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: us to tackle here before we wrap up to his
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: quick show. YEP, this comes from Jake in Arlington, Virginia.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: He says that he uh, I'll just quote I went
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: to a Washington Nationals game yesterday with my wife and
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: got into conversation about walk up songs before the batter
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: goes up to hit. I'd love to hear what you
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: and Dan talk about, or what you would talk about
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: as far as walk up songs to when you're going hunting,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: and if that would change throughout the year, Like would
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: you have a different walkout song for the early season,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: for the rut versus the late season, um et cetera.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: So if you could have a walkout song as your
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: head into the stand, what would that be? Dan? Alright,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: So first I gotta say something. Fred Bear by Ted Nugent.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: In my opinion, it's not a good let's get ready
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: for hunting song. Sorry, I probably pissed a lot of
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: people off. I don't care. Second, it's a classic though
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: many I don't care if it's a classic. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: it's a classic. Because what it's the only song that
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: we're like they talk about hunting and it's called fred Bear.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm not. I don't feel it. I don't
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: feel it. So anyway, so what's your better alternative? So
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not the guy who's like, you know,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: like metal is out for me, Country Western it mostly
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: is out. I want some like really mel Low Tiptoe
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: and type stuff. So this, this isn't what you listen to.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: This is the song that would play as you triumphantly
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: head to your stand, as if you were walking to
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: the plate. Yes. Yes, And when I'm heading to the
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: plate to the tree stand, I'm not looking at headbang.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I'm not looking to get crazy fired up. I'm what
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I'm ready to get focused, all right. So one song
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: that comes to mind Neil Young Cortez The Killer. I
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: don't know if I know that one off top of
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: my head. Yeah, because it was made probably before your
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: dad was born. Okay, So Neil Young Cortez The Killer
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: for there um anything off the album? What what album is?
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: It's the Black Keys, uh, and it's the album Um Brothers.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: So I like that whole album. So those are just
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: two examples of just something like some bam bam bam
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: dada Da Da Da, Bum Bump Bob and then the
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: most inspiring music ever, just like some real laid back
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: chill music. You know, it's not let me guess you're
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: gonna be like blow sticks and ship on the way
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: to stand. Now, that's like my everyday life, man, I
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: got yeah, I gotta, I gotta change it up for
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: the tree stand. But basically my walk up song to
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: my office every day would be UM. But yes you
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: as you know, and as many people past listeners know,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I like some good e d M, dance and techno music.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: That's like my pre hunt truck drive music that I
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: listen to. UM. But I think for my walkout song,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I would have to steal a page out of the
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: book of my alma mater and play the song that
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: they play when the football team runs out into the field,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: because like just that moment for me in college, like
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: every time that happened, when the players come out and
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: they play this song, it just gets me so amped up.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: And that is thunderstruck by a C. D. C um
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: That song headed walking up to the walking up to
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: the plate would get me fired up and ready for
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: a cold front on November four, So I think that
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: would have to be my pick, but I'll try Cortez
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: the Killer, Quartets the Cornado or whatever things calling me
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: Neil Young and the song is Cortez the Killer. Okay,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I'll give that a try and when we'll see how
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: that works for me. Well, good luck with that, um,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: thanks man. Um. All right, well, uh dude, awesome elk hunt.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: I'm happy it was fun, um, And I don't know
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: if we'll be if I'm gonna be able to record one,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: let's try to record one before my elk hunt next week. Um,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: but if not, hopefully have a story on that soon.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: So that's it for me, buddy, and that's it for
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: the show too, So thank you for listening. Um. My

- 1:12:36Speaker 1: and I believe it was it was with Adam and Ryan,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: the guys he hunted with. He did that over on

- 1:12:49Speaker 1: stay tuned for more. It's gonna be exciting a few
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: weeks coming up here with ELK and the Michigan season

- 1:12:57Speaker 1: hopefully we'll have some good stories for you on that
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: front as well. Until next time, I guess I will
