- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17I'm excited today to be in Isaiah 25.
- 0:20We are in Isaiah's little apocalypse.
- 0:24What Isaiah saw and heard was told from the Lord about what
- 0:29would happen at the end of time. And so last episode we looked at
- 0:35the judgment of the earth, and as God deals with the totality
- 0:40of all nation, all nations, and all humanity's wickedness, what
- 0:45he will do there. And so yesterday was a little
- 0:49bit more of a sober kind of downer of an episode as you look
- 0:56at death and devastation that occurs first that humanity
- 1:00inflicts on itself and on each other, and then finally, as God
- 1:04deals with their sin, that he brings back on them what they
- 1:07have levied out to others. But then today's episode #25 is
- 1:12so encouraging and uplifting. And so I'm looking forward to
- 1:17being in this particular portion with you.
- 1:20Isaiah 25 and verse #1 says this Yahweh, you are are my God.
- 1:25I will exalt you, I will praise your name, for you have
- 1:29accomplished wonders, plans formed long ago with perfect
- 1:34faithfulness. Here Isaiah starts with like
- 1:38this song, this poem. You could even think of these
- 1:42words being put to a tune and singing through it of all the
- 1:48gods that were represented in the ancient Near East, the gods
- 1:54of the Canaanites, of Babylon, of Egypt.
- 1:57And Isaiah says, Yahweh, you are the God that I worship.
- 2:03You are the one that I own as my God.
- 2:06You're not just a God that overseas the crops or
- 2:10fertilization or war. You are God over it all.
- 2:14You are the one who is supremely in charge and in control.
- 2:19So I'm going to lift you up. I'm going to tell other people
- 2:21about you. I'm going to praise you because
- 2:24you have done incredible things and you have done it according
- 2:27to your plan. I love there.
- 2:29He says plans formed long ago with perfect faithfulness that
- 2:33everything that comes to pass we know comes through the hand of
- 2:36our good and faithful God, who despite humanity's sinfulness
- 2:41and faithlessness and evil, God is still working out all things
- 2:45according to the counsel of his own will.
- 2:48Verse #2 Isaiah begins describing what some of these
- 2:53plans entailed. He says, For you have turned the
- 2:56city into a pile of rocks, a fortified city into ruins.
- 3:00The fortress of Barbarians is no longer a city.
- 3:04It will never be rebuilt. Therefore a strong people will
- 3:09honor you. The cities of violent nations
- 3:12will fear you, for you have been a stronghold for the poor
- 3:16person, a stronghold for the needy in his distress, A refuge
- 3:20from storms and a shade from heat.
- 3:23When the breath of the violent is like a storm against a wall,
- 3:27like heat in a dry land, you will subdue the uproar of
- 3:31Barbarians as the shade of a cloud cools the heat of the day.
- 3:35So he will silence the song of the violent.
- 3:39So here, this city that is being talked about, this is something
- 3:41that's first mentioned actually in the book of Genesis.
- 3:45And then it's kind of a theme, a thread all throughout Scripture,
- 3:48is this talk about the city of man versus the city of God.
- 3:53So the first city that is built is done by Cain all the way back
- 3:59in Genesis chapter 4. And as Cain builds a city, the
- 4:06effects of large amounts of humanity together, especially
- 4:10under powerful rulers, is seen over and over again to be a
- 4:15place of violence, abuse, sexual immorality and sexual abuse of
- 4:23others, rampant greed and idolatry.
- 4:27Like that's what cities so often represent in Scripture.
- 4:31And even as you look nowadays, as you look at cities, as I run
- 4:35through those lists, many of you might go, oh, yeah, that that
- 4:38seems to happen when a lot of people get together.
- 4:41There's a lot of consolidated power.
- 4:43There's kind of closer quarters together.
- 4:46And so it makes for some things of crime or some things of the
- 4:52rich and powerful and those that oversee everyone else, they can
- 4:56tend to overrule and and be wicked in many ways towards
- 5:03others. You might go, yeah, that that
- 5:04kind of makes sense. Actually, that's very much true
- 5:06to our lived experience. And this is what Scripture so
- 5:10often references with cities. But God has also said there is
- 5:14another city. It's like the New Jerusalem that
- 5:17we learned about in Isaiah chapter 2, that city that is not
- 5:22made by mankind, but a city that is made by God.
- 5:26And he is the one that will rule.
- 5:28He will rule in righteousness and people will have the, if you
- 5:32will, the resources and the community that come with having
- 5:38a large city. But it will not be overseen by
- 5:42wickedness and crime will not be something that we have to worry
- 5:46about. It will be a place where we can
- 5:49be around others and enjoy all of the benefits of city life,
- 5:53but without what is currently happening in our world with
- 5:58crime and evil, poverty, abuse, all of that.
- 6:02And so here Isaiah is extolling the wonder of God, who has
- 6:08destroyed the city of man and broken down the the violence and
- 6:12the abusers, those that oppress the poor and the needy, that he
- 6:17is like shade on a cloudy day over those that need help.
- 6:23And then we read this in verses 6 through 8 on this mountain
- 6:27that is Mount Zion, where Jerusalem is.
- 6:30This is the picture of God's new Kingdom.
- 6:33That Millennium reign of Christ says on this mountain, Yahweh of
- 6:38heaven's armies will prepare for all the peoples, not just
- 6:42Israel, all of the nations, a feast of choice meat, a feast
- 6:47with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat, fine vintage wine.
- 6:53So there's all of these descriptions of like delicious
- 6:56meat and like super old wine and aged well.
- 6:59And God is preparing this for his people, for all the peoples
- 7:03of the world, all those who have turned to him.
- 7:07Verse #7 on this mountain, He will swallow up the burial
- 7:11shroud, the shroud over all the peoples sheet covering all the
- 7:16nations. All right, what?
- 7:17What is this thing that covers everybody from every nation?
- 7:20What is it that he is eating? This burial shroud says when he
- 7:24is swallowed up, death once and for all, Yahweh ad And I will
- 7:28wipe away the tears from every face and remove His people's
- 7:33disgrace from the whole earth. For Yahweh has spoken.
- 7:37There is coming a day where there will be no more death.
- 7:42What a joy that that will be one day.
- 7:46And this is the promise of God's word.
- 7:48And Jesus is the first fruits of this promise that there at
- 7:54Jerusalem, right outside of the city, Jesus was the one who
- 7:58first took this burial, shroud, this death on to himself so that
- 8:04he could conquer it and render it powerless for those that
- 8:09believe in the Lord. And one day he will make it so
- 8:13that all death, any death, any physical death for us is forever
- 8:18off the page. And on that day we will feast
- 8:21this marriage supper of the Lamb that Jesus promised to the
- 8:26disciples that one day he would eat with them in his Father's
- 8:30Kingdom. And then John in Revelation
- 8:33highlights the marriage supper of the lamb, this feast that we
- 8:36enjoy. And John didn't just get that
- 8:39from the words of Jesus. He got it by looking back at the
- 8:42Old Testament and looking here at Isaiah.
- 8:45This is this theme is going to come up a few more times, I
- 8:48believe even over in chapter 27. I know of some of it and we
- 8:53might see a little bit of it in tomorrow's episode as well.
- 8:56So death is going to be consumed.
- 9:00God is eating death and the tears will be wiped away from
- 9:05every face. Shame will be gone and we get to
- 9:10enjoy the good life with God. Think of the Garden of Eden,
- 9:15that initial mountain that we would read about in Ezekiel
- 9:19chapter 28, and their God had a relationship with Adam and Eve,
- 9:27that He was their God. He walked with them, He talked
- 9:29with them. They were able to eat all of the
- 9:32different fruits of the garden. But then they disobeyed God.
- 9:38They decided to, if you will, write their own rules of right
- 9:42and wrong, not listening to God, and as a result they broke
- 9:48relationship. They broke fellowship with God.
- 9:51But God was always intent on humanity returning back to Him
- 9:55and on this day we will get to eat again.
- 9:58This time not just the fruit, but here choice meat and here
- 10:04even aged wine and fine vintage wine is what the Lord has
- 10:09prepared for us. Verse #9 On that day it will be
- 10:13said, look, this is our God, we have waited for him and he has
- 10:18saved us. This is Yahweh, we have waited
- 10:21for him. Let's rejoice and be glad in His
- 10:24salvation. Yahweh's power will rest on this
- 10:28mountain. What a joy.
- 10:30And here, just as Israel waited for what God would do in
- 10:36restoring and rescuing them, that took its first fruits in
- 10:41Jesus. That through Jesus we are not
- 10:44under condemnation. We are in relationship.
- 10:47We're not alienated from God or have a fundamental brokenness to
- 10:52us that severs our connection with God.
- 10:55Instead. Instead, we have been put back
- 10:57together. We're made whole again, and
- 11:01there is no condemnation for us. We are the prodigal sons, far
- 11:05away from the Father. Through the work of the Holy
- 11:09Spirit, we came to our senses, realized that we needed to
- 11:12return, and God has enveloped us and He has this feast waiting
- 11:17for us. What a joy.
- 11:19So let's wait patiently for either the day when we pass and
- 11:25we are reunited with God because death no longer is that fearful
- 11:29thing for us. Instead it is a time of
- 11:32rejoicing. Which is somewhat ironic that in
- 11:37death we find eternal life. But it is what Jesus has
- 11:40purchased for us. Or someday Jesus himself will
- 11:44bodily return. And so we will ever be with the
- 11:48Lord. And so whether we go to him or
- 11:51he comes to us, we can wait for the Lord.
- 11:55We can, Joyce, we can be glad in the saving work that God has
- 11:59done for us. Then verse #10 through verse #12
- 12:07takes a little bit of a turn and we can harken back to a couple
- 12:11of chapters. Remember here, 'cause it's going
- 12:13to talk about Moab. This is talking about the
- 12:16political and religious, military and financial structure
- 12:22of these nations that are emblematic of the city.
- 12:27So here Moab represents the political, financial and
- 12:34religious sectors of that place. This isn't all of these people
- 12:40are in this boat, he says. But Moab will be trampled in his
- 12:43place. So instead of Israel and Judah
- 12:46being destroyed by the nations, Moab gets destroyed by the
- 12:49nations. He says as straw is trampled in
- 12:52a dung pile, he will spread out his arms in the middle of it.
- 12:55As a swimmer spreads out his arms to swim, his pride will be
- 13:00brought low along with the trickery of his high hands.
- 13:04The high walled fortress will be brought down, thrown to the
- 13:07ground, to the dust. So here the great architecture,
- 13:12everything that was so amazing about this particular nation
- 13:16gets brought down. That instead of what has
- 13:19happened to Israel and Judah with their destruction, now
- 13:23someone else gets it. And God is going to bring back
- 13:27His people. He is going to save them and
- 13:30restore them. He's not interested in restoring
- 13:33the fortunes of the nation of Moab.
- 13:36Now there are people from Moab that know the Lord, that love
- 13:40the Lord that became part of the lineage of Jesus Christ himself.
- 13:44And so here is not a here's what's wrong with those that
- 13:50are, you know, genetically or historically those from the
- 13:54tribe of Moab because King David himself, his ancestors are from
- 13:59Moab. And so God has love for all the
- 14:01peoples of the world. God has no love for the
- 14:04institution's, the systems, the nations and the politics that we
- 14:09have. Instead, he has his own way.
- 14:12And I look forward to that day when the Lord comes.
- 14:15He has this feast for us. He is wiping away the tears from
- 14:18our face. He removes all of our disgrace
- 14:21and our shame and we will ever be with him.
- 14:25I hope that you're looking forward to that day, that you
- 14:27have called them the Lord to save you, that you are waiting
- 14:30patiently, knowing that yes, judgment day is coming for evil,
- 14:34but also reward and joy, fellowship and community is
- 14:39coming for the people of God. Be encouraged through that
- 14:44today. Let me know if you have any
- 14:46questions and I would love to hear from you.
- 14:48Even if it's just watch the episode today or listen to the
- 14:52episode today. I would love to hear from you.
- 14:55If you are on Apple Podcasts or Spotify podcast, I encourage you
- 15:00go to the channel and leave a review that helps other people
- 15:04get to hear what you are hearing from the word of God.
- 15:07If this is a blessing to you, then I encourage you to leave a
- 15:11review and looking forward to next episode, Isaiah chapter 26.
- 15:16And we'll have tomorrow's episode and one more in Isaiah's
- 15:20little apocalypse. And then we'll jump into another
- 15:23section of this scroll of Isaiah.
- 15:26God bless. Have a wonderful day.
