- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey-oh!
- 0:02Speaker 2: Hey-oh!
- 0:03Speaker 3: No, Ed McMahon's not here, so I had to do
- 0:06Speaker 3: it myself. Well, I always wanted to be, you know,
- 0:11Speaker 3: Johnny Carson. Always.
- 0:14Speaker 4: Who wouldn't?
- 0:15Speaker 3: I mean, you know, went to bed with him. Well,
- 0:17Speaker 3: not literally. America, no matter how bad, this is real
- 0:22Speaker 3: important too, no matter how bad our day was, and
- 0:26Speaker 3: back then there was no social media, so we didn't
- 0:28Speaker 3: have 24-7, the negative news, and we weren't in constant depression,
- 0:33Speaker 3: and the world was at our feet. But we still knew,
- 0:36Speaker 3: you know, certain things were going on, and just like today,
- 0:40Speaker 3: there's bad news and all that. But it didn't matter,
- 0:44Speaker 3: because at the end of the day, and they didn't
- 0:47Speaker 3: even say that saying back then. No one said at
- 0:50Speaker 3: the end of the day. But at the end of
- 0:52Speaker 3: the day, you had Johnny Carson waiting for you, and
- 0:55Speaker 3: you went to bed with a laugh and a smile.
- 0:59Speaker 3: And he never, it wasn't like, it's not like today.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Johnny didn't do a lot of political satire. He did
- 1:06Speaker 3: comedy bits and all that. He had great guests and everything.
- 1:09Speaker 3: But it was never, you know, an agenda where, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: I heard Stephen Colbert show like 98% of his guests
- 1:17Speaker 3: were all, you know, on one side of the team.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Never had, you know, the mix. But Johnny didn't do that.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And so you didn't feel suffocated. with the same, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: dose of everything that was going on. It was a
- 1:31Speaker 3: continuation today of the suffocation of bad news. Not them. So,
- 1:37Speaker 3: you know, and I met Johnny just one time. In
- 1:41Speaker 3: my world, you know, for those of you who don't
- 1:44Speaker 3: know or don't know, you know, I used to be,
- 1:46Speaker 3: you know, part of the entertainment world and still am
- 1:49Speaker 3: to some degree. And so I would, you know, I
- 1:52Speaker 3: would rub elbows with people that, you know, I grew
- 1:55Speaker 3: up with or I saw on TV and some of
- 1:58Speaker 3: them became, you know, my friends later in life, which
- 2:00Speaker 3: it's hard to believe, but, um, but that's just my world.
- 2:04Speaker 3: It's not who I am. It's, it was, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 3: my job and whatnot. So, but he was small, you know, I, I,
- 2:11Speaker 3: I actually was taller than Johnny Carson, but he was
- 2:15Speaker 3: bigger than life, bigger than life. There is nobody that
- 2:18Speaker 3: will ever, ever even get close to him. And all
- 2:22Speaker 3: the guys that followed him, Jay Leno and, Letterman, that,
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, they have reverence for Johnny, you know. Now,
- 2:32Speaker 3: I heard a couple of things. Being friends with people
- 2:34Speaker 3: who were on the show a lot, like Don Rickles,
- 2:38Speaker 3: you know, Don would tell me, you know, Johnny wasn't
- 2:41Speaker 3: always the nicest guy when the cameras weren't on. But
- 2:45Speaker 3: that sort of hurt me a little bit because I
- 2:47Speaker 3: had this impression of him. But he was private. Let's
- 2:49Speaker 3: put it that way, more private. And during the breaks,
- 2:52Speaker 3: you know, they didn't really talk. you know but you
- 2:56Speaker 3: had to be if you if you know you made
- 2:59Speaker 3: it if you debuted like Jerry Seinfeld and all the
- 3:03Speaker 3: great comics that are out there today that was their
- 3:06Speaker 3: Mount Rushmore to be on Johnny and if he called
- 3:09Speaker 3: you over to the couch that meant you made it
- 3:13Speaker 3: and your career just skyrocketed from there you know so
- 3:18Speaker 3: that's why I like doing these I've done the Elsie
- 3:22Speaker 3: show before and and run the, and by the way,
- 3:26Speaker 3: while I'm thinking about it, you know, who wrote that
- 3:28Speaker 3: tonight's show theme was, and I don't, please don't think,
- 3:32Speaker 3: take this the wrong way. What was my friend, Paul Anka. And,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you know, I don't know. Every time that, that song played,
- 3:38Speaker 3: Paul probably got a hundred bucks. And, you know, I
- 3:42Speaker 3: asked him, I asked Paul, I said, how'd you come?
- 3:44Speaker 3: How'd you, he said, just came to him like my way. He,
- 3:48Speaker 3: you know, my way he wrote for Frank Sinatra when
- 3:50Speaker 3: he was, you know, In a hotel room. And he
- 3:55Speaker 3: sent it to Frank, who was in London at the time.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And he said, what do you think it is? And
- 4:01Speaker 3: he said, kid, I love it. And it became sort
- 4:04Speaker 3: of like his national anthem, to be honest with you.
- 4:08Speaker 3: So there's a big world out there of people that
- 4:12Speaker 3: are coming on the show that have a lot of roots.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And the show today, I'm really happy with because it's
- 4:20Speaker 3: a great lineup. Johnny would be happy with it. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 3: and opening the show, my first guest coming on soon
- 4:27Speaker 3: will be, I'm a big fan of Nicole Napa. She
- 4:32Speaker 3: was the former anchor at Channel 3. I love her.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I just think there was no one with better passion
- 4:39Speaker 3: and conviction and her facial expressions when she delivered the
- 4:43Speaker 3: news and all that, and she now has her own podcast,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and you'll hear more about that. And then... The Godfather,
- 4:51Speaker 3: my favorite movie. My favorite movie and everybody's favorite. One
- 4:54Speaker 3: and two. Three didn't exist. But the guy who played Carlo,
- 4:59Speaker 3: you know, who beat up his wife and Sonny came
- 5:03Speaker 3: after him and beat him up in the street, which
- 5:05Speaker 3: was a true story. I mean, James Caan never really
- 5:09Speaker 3: didn't like Gianni Russo, who played Carlo. And he's got
- 5:13Speaker 3: tremendous stories. He wrote a great book called Hollywood Godfather.
- 5:18Speaker 3: and if half the stories are true in there, oh
- 5:22Speaker 3: my God, what a life, from Marilyn Monroe to the,
- 5:25Speaker 3: to the drug lords in Mexico, and he's just, he's
- 5:30Speaker 3: just a walking storyteller, it's really cool, and you'll hear
- 5:33Speaker 3: some of them in the interview, and then my good friend,
- 5:37Speaker 3: the front man of Godsmack, Solly Arna, I love that band,
- 5:41Speaker 3: I love him, he's been a friend for a long time,
- 5:45Speaker 3: and They just rock it. They just came back from Europe,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and I called Sully to see if he'd want to
- 5:51Speaker 3: come on the show, and of course, he said yes,
- 5:54Speaker 3: so you'll hear some really cool stories about him, and
- 5:57Speaker 3: then everyone's favorite, Lee Greenwood. Lee's timing with, you know,
- 6:03Speaker 3: God bless the USA during 9-11 was a rallying cry
- 6:07Speaker 3: at the Yankee Stadium when he took the field, standing ovation,
- 6:12Speaker 3: and it happened just again this past September when on
- 6:15Speaker 3: the 25th anniversary. So, you know, I love Lee because
- 6:20Speaker 3: he's just so passionate and dedicated and proud, and proud
- 6:25Speaker 3: to be an American. No apologies. And then, closing the show,
- 6:29Speaker 3: I hope, I hope, because he's calling in live from
- 6:33Speaker 3: Los Angeles, so it's early out there, will be Sly
- 6:38Speaker 3: Stallone's brother, Frank Stallone, who was very involved in Rocky
- 6:43Speaker 3: and the development of the 50th anniversary of Rocky. And you,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you probably have seen Sylvester Stallone, you know, uh, doing
- 6:50Speaker 3: a lot of interviews, um, on TV right now and everywhere.
- 6:54Speaker 3: And his story is incredible. He just wrote a book too.
- 6:58Speaker 3: And Frank will talk, talk about that, but, uh, he
- 7:02Speaker 3: wrote far from over. It's a great song. And, uh,
- 7:06Speaker 3: and Frank was, you know, really instrumental in, in, uh,
- 7:10Speaker 3: helping with Rocky. Rocky's a phenomenal story, and I think
- 7:15Speaker 3: everybody pretty much knows it, but, you know, Stallone was
- 7:20Speaker 3: offered $ 100, 000 to sell the script, and he was a nobody.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Nobody cared for him, or nobody liked him, or even
- 7:28Speaker 3: knew of him, but they liked the idea, so they
- 7:30Speaker 3: were going to give him $ 100, 000. And he passed, and
- 7:34Speaker 3: said that they wanted to get somebody else to play him.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And he said no.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I'm going to be.
- 7:41Speaker 3: The star of this one. This was all me. And
- 7:44Speaker 3: he turned down a million bucks later. They offered him
- 7:49Speaker 3: a million dollars, the studio executives, still not wanting him
- 7:53Speaker 3: to play the part. He walked from that too. And
- 7:56Speaker 3: then fast forward, he becomes, you know, it became iconic. Iconic.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Rocky was a great, good feel success story of a
- 8:07Speaker 3: guy down and out and you know, and lived the
- 8:10Speaker 3: American dream. And, but Frank is also a great storyteller
- 8:18Speaker 3: and he fought, this is a little sidebar here, he
- 8:24Speaker 3: fought Geraldo Rivera in New York. And guess, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 3: it was a fundraiser for charity on Howard Stern's show.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And they promoted it, that they were going to fight
- 8:36Speaker 3: each other. And guess who was Frank Stallone's corner man?
- 8:41Speaker 3: If anybody could guess who his corner man was, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 3: you're going to get a free copy of my new book.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It was me. And, you know, Frank, I trained him.
- 8:54Speaker 3: We trained together. It became really a fun thing to
- 8:58Speaker 3: do because, you know, I'm an executive in Atlantic City
- 9:03Speaker 3: and uh, you know, I didn't have a whole lot
- 9:06Speaker 3: of time to do it, but it was a fun
- 9:08Speaker 3: thing to do. And so Frank and I became friends
- 9:11Speaker 3: and spent a lot of time together. And so you'll
- 9:13Speaker 3: hear his stories, but by.
- 9:15Speaker 5: The way, and that's the show today. I hope you
- 9:18Speaker 5: love it.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Uh, it's, uh, these people are, you know, at the
- 9:23Speaker 3: top of their game. They're, they're, they're great people. Like
- 9:26Speaker 3: the first show I had was, was really great too
- 9:29Speaker 3: with Paul Anka and, Tony Orlando, and Brian Cashman, the
- 9:32Speaker 3: GM of the New York Yankees, and Ricky Nelson's son, Gunnar,
- 9:36Speaker 3: who is phenomenal. He and his brother, they keep Ricky
- 9:41Speaker 3: Nelson's name and legacy alive at their show. Paul Mercurio, who,
- 9:47Speaker 3: you know, great comic here, and he's on a lot
- 9:50Speaker 3: of the talk shows and stuff. So, you know, trying
- 9:53Speaker 3: to keep some of the names that locally you wouldn't
- 9:57Speaker 3: be able to hear as much.
- 9:59Speaker 4: All right.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Here and Front Row Center so they can become a
- 10:03Speaker 3: little bit more company for you in the morning they
- 10:06Speaker 3: hear these people who have done so much and have
- 10:09Speaker 3: had spectacular stellar careers come in and you know not
- 10:13Speaker 3: talk politics but talk about their success in the American
- 10:17Speaker 3: culture American pop culture and be be part of it, and,
- 10:20Speaker 3: you know, I was part of it as well, and,
- 10:22Speaker 3: you know, these people got there for a reason, they
- 10:27Speaker 3: got there for a reason, hard work, it's simple, hard work, dedication,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and a dream, living a dream, you know, and, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 3: there's a guy on YouTube who does, who interviews and
- 10:40Speaker 3: goes up to billionaires, and I love it, and he
- 10:45Speaker 3: surprises them, he says, how did you get to be
- 10:47Speaker 3: a billionaire? Why are you so rich? And all of
- 10:49Speaker 3: them have had just tremendous insight about, you know, how
- 10:54Speaker 3: to be a billionaire and how to get rich. And
- 10:58Speaker 3: every single story is that they came from nothing. They
- 11:03Speaker 3: came from nothing. They didn't inherit anything, but they had
- 11:06Speaker 3: this dream or this dedication and sacrifice that they made.
- 11:10Speaker 3: And that's what entertainers do too. You know, they have
- 11:15Speaker 3: to give up a lot of their their personal life,
- 11:17Speaker 3: and a lot of them are not home. And, you know,
- 11:21Speaker 3: so they do a lot of great things for us
- 11:24Speaker 3: to enjoy. So that's my little contribution here this morning
- 11:28Speaker 3: to hear from people who you wouldn't normally hear from
- 11:31Speaker 3: that you read about or see on TV or listen
- 11:33Speaker 3: to their music. So that'll be cool. But coming in
- 11:38Speaker 3: this morning, it's dark, it's early, and I come out
- 11:44Speaker 3: of the front of my house And I see something
- 11:47Speaker 3: across the street as I was locking the door to
- 11:51Speaker 3: get to my car. It's this gigantic animal. No idea
- 11:56Speaker 3: what it was. It was probably a gigantic coyote or
- 12:01Speaker 3: something on steroids. I've never seen anything like it. And
- 12:04Speaker 3: it made me pause because I went, I got to
- 12:07Speaker 3: go to my car in the driveway, which is a
- 12:10Speaker 3: little short distance. But this thing, this monster is across
- 12:14Speaker 3: the street. I don't think he saw me because, you know,
- 12:20Speaker 3: the snout was down. I'm telling you, it was big.
- 12:23Speaker 3: And all of a sudden I kept thinking of, I
- 12:26Speaker 3: may not be able to do the show. This thing's
- 12:28Speaker 3: going to come right at me, man. And so I
- 12:31Speaker 3: literally ran to my car and got in the car
- 12:35Speaker 3: and then I saw it go up the hill. So,
- 12:37Speaker 3: you know, I'm here safe and sound. God, I just,
- 12:41Speaker 3: I never saw anything like it, you know, and I
- 12:44Speaker 3: have this little dog, so I've got to call my
- 12:46Speaker 3: wife and tell her, do not take my little dog
- 12:49Speaker 3: out right now because this thing's looking for breakfast. And
- 12:54Speaker 3: my little dog will be breakfast. But the other thing, too,
- 12:57Speaker 3: is Lee has been kind to offer me a segment
- 13:03Speaker 3: called Tom's Take. And I hope you're enjoying them, and
- 13:07Speaker 3: I do hear from you. And I want to thank
- 13:09Speaker 3: you for the feedback that I get. Thee forwards me
- 13:13Speaker 3: your emails, and sometimes I get texts from people who
- 13:17Speaker 3: know me or have my number.
- 13:18Speaker 5: And that brings.
- 13:21Speaker 3: A smile to my face because, you know, my takes are,
- 13:25Speaker 3: you know, they're not about politics or anything. They're just
- 13:27Speaker 3: about life and a little bit of, you know, motivation
- 13:33Speaker 3: on life and a little take on life. But I
- 13:36Speaker 3: want you to pay attention to my next Tom's take.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I believe it's every Wednesday and early in the morning
- 13:45Speaker 3: if you can get up. And then sometimes it's played
- 13:49Speaker 3: later in the day as well. But this one I
- 13:52Speaker 3: think you're going to really like because it's all about
- 13:59Speaker 3: our kids. And it's all about the pride in America
- 14:04Speaker 3: and lack of it. It's all about the next generation.
- 14:08Speaker 3: It's all about what we have now. to inherit the wind.
- 14:12Speaker 3: And whoever's going to inherit the wind, we've got to
- 14:16Speaker 3: make sure they get the message, how proud they should
- 14:18Speaker 3: be to be here. And the message is not translating.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And I don't know if you remember the movie Cool
- 14:26Speaker 3: Hand Luke, but I do. Paul Newman was in there.
- 14:30Speaker 3: He was just, you know, not living in reality, always
- 14:33Speaker 3: trying to escape reality, which sort of is ironic, the
- 14:37Speaker 3: symbolism there. And When they bring him back after they
- 14:41Speaker 3: catch him for the 10th time, whatever it was, the warden,
- 14:45Speaker 3: the southern drawl warden, you know, looks at him and
- 14:50Speaker 3: says in that raspy voice, what we've got here is
- 14:54Speaker 3: failure to communicate. And that stuck with me because in
- 15:02Speaker 3: all walks of life and in companies and when you
- 15:05Speaker 3: have employees and, And citizens, just the message is so important,
- 15:13Speaker 3: but we don't communicate it right. And our kids, Gen Z,
- 15:18Speaker 3: the Gen Z generation, is not proud to be an American.
- 15:24Speaker 3: The majority, almost 60%. And even worse, a good portion
- 15:30Speaker 3: of that 60%, they're embarrassed to be an American. And
- 15:34Speaker 3: that hurt real bad. That stung me. And then the
- 15:39Speaker 3: last one. And you'll hear more about this in my
- 15:42Speaker 3: take on Wednesday. One in five. Are you sitting down?
- 15:47Speaker 3: One in five has a positive view of Osama bin Laden. Wow. Okay.
- 15:56Speaker 3: So we're not really communicating what we should be in
- 16:01Speaker 3: our schools and social media. Of course, you know, our institutions. And,
- 16:08Speaker 3: you know, the nonstop, you know, hammering of negative news,
- 16:14Speaker 3: you know, 86%, 87% is all negative about the U.S.
- 16:18Speaker 3: From our own, you know, from our own. And yet,
- 16:23Speaker 3: you know, we're cheering for people that create the worst
- 16:30Speaker 3: case scenarios here. And, you know, that's who they're cheering.
- 16:35Speaker 3: That's the team they want to be on. we got
- 16:37Speaker 3: to reeducate our kids and make them proud to be
- 16:41Speaker 3: an American because other people coming here are very proud.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And I'll talk about that. They love us and with
- 16:48Speaker 3: the passion. So if you can just, you know, stay
- 16:52Speaker 3: tuned on Wednesday, uh, listen to my take in its entirety.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I think you'll like it, but I want everyone to
- 17:00Speaker 3: have a happy day today on me. Have a happy
- 17:04Speaker 3: day on me. It's a, It's a good feeling song,
- 17:08Speaker 3: and I'm going to go to a break and just
- 17:11Speaker 3: listen to the song. So have a happy day on me.
- 17:15Speaker 6: The purpose of life is to have some fun.
- 17:19Speaker 7: The purpose of.
- 17:23Speaker 8: Life is to have some fun.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Have a happy.
- 17:53Speaker 9: Day on me.
- 18:15Speaker 10: Good Monday morning, everyone. Our first check out on the roads.
- 18:20Speaker 10: Road construction on the Gold Star Bridge. Route 12 is

- 18:35Speaker 7: Hi, I'm Hugh Hewitt.
- 18:36Speaker 12: When planning for retirement, a big mistake people make is
- 18:39Speaker 12: underestimating how much income they'll actually need. You may think
- 18:43Speaker 12: you can live on 70 or 80 percent of your
- 18:45Speaker 12: working paycheck, but that doesn't always hold up. Some expenses
- 18:48Speaker 12: do indeed go away, but others like health care, home maintenance,
- 18:51Speaker 12: even travel can stay the same or increase. That's something
- 18:53Speaker 12: that Ken and Nick Tumalo help their clients think through
- 18:56Speaker 12: to determine what their income needs to be, not just
- 18:59Speaker 12: on paper, but in the real world. At Tumalo Financial,

- 26:51Speaker 13: break in.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Well, welcome back to the show. I was going to
- 26:56Speaker 3: say the Tom Cantone show, but I can't say that.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I'm just the substitute teacher today, man. So kids, you
- 27:04Speaker 3: can have sort of like, you can relax out there.
- 27:06Speaker 3: You listeners, you don't have to fret about calling in
- 27:09Speaker 3: with politics and things that anger you today because my
- 27:13Speaker 3: next guest is the most warm, caring, real person I've
- 27:18Speaker 3: met in a long time. She was a former anchor
- 27:22Speaker 3: at Channel 3 in CBS here. And when I first
- 27:28Speaker 3: saw her, when I first saw her, I did a
- 27:31Speaker 3: double take. I went, oh, my God, she's delivering the
- 27:34Speaker 3: news in real time. And with that look, if it
- 27:39Speaker 3: was bad news, she had a concerned look. If it
- 27:42Speaker 3: was good news, she was happy. It was translating. You know,
- 27:47Speaker 3: what we have here is not failure to communicate. She
- 27:50Speaker 3: communicated really, really well. And I became a fan. And
- 27:56Speaker 3: I'm just going to keep talking until she can't talk anymore.
- 27:59Speaker 3: But ladies and gentlemen, I got to, you know, welcome
- 28:03Speaker 3: to the show this morning. My good friend, Nicole Napa,
- 28:07Speaker 3: who has her own podcast now called called Mostly Together.
- 28:16Speaker 33: Yes. Yes.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And that's what mostly all of us are. So, Nicole, welcome.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 28:23Speaker 34: Thank you so much, Tom. I have to say, I
- 28:26Speaker 34: don't think I've gotten up this early to go on
- 28:28Speaker 34: air in a little while like this. So you are
- 28:31Speaker 34: a very dear friend and I would do anything for you.
- 28:33Speaker 34: So there you have it.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Well, thank you. And vice versa. And well, yeah, your
- 28:40Speaker 3: old world was early morning, right?
- 28:45Speaker 34: Early morning.
- 28:46Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 34: I got into the news almost 20 years ago. I
- 28:50Speaker 34: was on overnight at the NBC station up in Springfield, Massachusetts,
- 28:54Speaker 34: for almost four years, and then came down to Connecticut,
- 28:59Speaker 34: came down 91, landed at Channel 3 in Rocky Hill,
- 29:02Speaker 34: and I was on air on the morning show there for, yeah,
- 29:06Speaker 34: almost 12 years. So that's all I really ever knew
- 29:09Speaker 34: was early morning and never sleeping.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Well, yeah, that was... A lot of dedication to do that, though.
- 29:19Speaker 3: I mean, you know, and what was the end of
- 29:20Speaker 3: your day? You started, like, I'm assuming 4 in the
- 29:23Speaker 3: 5 in the morning or whatever. And then when was
- 29:25Speaker 3: your day over?
- 29:27Speaker 34: Yeah, so, I mean, I would be getting up usually
- 29:30Speaker 34: around 2 a.m., 2.30.
- 29:31Speaker 33: Wow.
- 29:32Speaker 34: And I'd get there at the station for 3.30, 4 o'clock.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 29:36Speaker 34: We'd be on air at 4.30.
- 29:37Speaker 35: Wow.
- 29:40Speaker 34: Day would end, depending on, you know, the workload, depending
- 29:43Speaker 34: on if there's breaking news or I'm working on a
- 29:45Speaker 34: special feature story, anywhere from, like, you know, 12 to
- 29:49Speaker 34: 2 o'clock. So, yeah, you definitely have to be dedicated
- 29:53Speaker 34: in this kind of industry, for sure.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Well, and then, you know, your family came along, so
- 29:58Speaker 3: that had to be rough, too. you know, to be
- 30:01Speaker 3: a way.
- 30:02Speaker 34: And I, and I knew I wanted to have a family,
- 30:05Speaker 34: you know what I mean? Going into this career. And I,
- 30:07Speaker 34: you know, listen, I knew it wasn't going to be easy,
- 30:09Speaker 34: but after my son, you know, I kind of bounced
- 30:13Speaker 34: back and it was also COVID too. So it was
- 30:15Speaker 34: a little bit different of a time. And, you know,
- 30:17Speaker 34: my husband was home with him for like 16 months
- 30:19Speaker 34: while I'm still going into work to anchor. But then
- 30:23Speaker 34: when my daughter came, it was a little bit of
- 30:26Speaker 34: a different story, you know, just like between the sleep
- 30:30Speaker 34: and having two kids now. And so that was tough.
- 30:34Speaker 34: That was tough to balance for sure.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Well, people don't understand or even can relate to that
- 30:41Speaker 3: kind of time commitment and that kind of challenge when
- 30:43Speaker 3: you've got kids waiting for you, a husband, you have
- 30:46Speaker 3: a personal life, and then you've got this very open public,
- 30:51Speaker 3: like visually, you know, you're a public person. And you're,
- 30:56Speaker 3: you know, doing shows. I've done the show before with
- 31:01Speaker 3: you and Scott Haney. And was it Better Connecticut or
- 31:05Speaker 3: Good Day Connecticut?
- 31:06Speaker 34: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Great Day Connecticut, yeah.
- 31:09Speaker 3: And I loved doing that. You know, Scott's a good friend, and,
- 31:13Speaker 3: you know, we banter back and forth. But, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 3: when I walked into the studio, and, you know, I
- 31:18Speaker 3: haven't met you yet, but I, you know, was a fan.
- 31:22Speaker 3: And there you were. And I had to go up
- 31:26Speaker 3: and say hello. And the minute I did, there was
- 31:29Speaker 3: an instant connection because we have one big, gigantic thing
- 31:34Speaker 3: in common. You. Yes. And I know people know that
- 31:38Speaker 3: I'm a huge Beatles fan, but so are you.
- 31:43Speaker 33: Absolutely.
- 31:44Speaker 3: And then we started talking Beatles. And then even more
- 31:49Speaker 3: cool was your grandfather said, was there at the Ed
- 31:54Speaker 3: Sullivan Show when they made their American debut. Are you
- 31:59Speaker 3: kidding me? I'm like one degree away from reality, man.
- 32:05Speaker 3: That was great.
- 32:05Speaker 34: Yeah. Okay, so yes, I went through Beatlemania in like
- 32:11Speaker 34: the 90s, in early 2000s. And it was, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 34: by myself pretty much. I have one other friend I
- 32:20Speaker 34: really like had basically indoctrinated to the Beatlemania that I
- 32:24Speaker 34: was living in. But my grandfathers, I really got into
- 32:28Speaker 34: the Beatles because I always knew about them. My parents
- 32:30Speaker 34: are both musicians. They have great taste in music. You know,
- 32:33Speaker 34: I would go and see shows. And so I was
- 32:36Speaker 34: always aware of them. I had a girlfriend who ended
- 32:39Speaker 34: up playing A Hard Day's Night. And my mom said, oh,
- 32:43Speaker 34: I ended up keeping that on, I think it was
- 32:44Speaker 34: like PBS or something. And I watched it and like, wow,
- 32:48Speaker 34: they're really funny. And I think I was maybe like
- 32:51Speaker 34: nine or 10 years old at the time. And then
- 32:53Speaker 34: my girlfriend said, oh, yeah, my mom loves this movie, Help.
- 32:57Speaker 34: And I watched that, and I'm like, okay, this is great. Like,
- 33:01Speaker 34: I am totally hooked on just how charismatic they were, too,
- 33:05Speaker 34: you know, in addition to everything else and their talent
- 33:08Speaker 34: as musicians. So, yeah, I was talking to my grandfather,
- 33:13Speaker 34: who was a former NYPD lieutenant for many years, and
- 33:18Speaker 34: he said, you know, yeah, I have to support them
- 33:22Speaker 34: to the theater and he said, and actually was in
- 33:25Speaker 34: charge of, so whenever any big bands or big public notoriety,
- 33:32Speaker 34: people would come to the New York City, Manhattan, he
- 33:35Speaker 34: would be in charge of it. So when the Beatles
- 33:38Speaker 34: first came in February of 64, it was really funny.
- 33:42Speaker 34: His job, his main job was to make sure to
- 33:46Speaker 34: disguise them as much as possible to and from the
- 33:49Speaker 34: Plaza Hotel. So he came up with an idea to
- 33:53Speaker 34: basically dress them up in the basement of the Plaza
- 33:56Speaker 34: Hotel as NYPD officers. And I'll never forget him saying,
- 34:04Speaker 34: you know, we had to tuck there and I'm doing
- 34:06Speaker 34: air quotations right now. There are long hair underneath the
- 34:09Speaker 34: police cap.
- 34:10Speaker 9: You know what I mean?
- 34:11Speaker 34: And he said they were so scared. They were so scared,
- 34:15Speaker 34: he said, and the girls still ended up finding out
- 34:18Speaker 34: it was them, you know, as they were trying to, like,
- 34:20Speaker 34: you know, bring him into the cars, this, like, underground
- 34:22Speaker 34: tunnel and all this stuff. He said the girls were
- 34:25Speaker 34: pulling at their hair, and he said they were just, like, shocked,
- 34:29Speaker 34: you know? And I always said to my grandfather, why
- 34:32Speaker 34: didn't you get your autograph? Like, you would have been
- 34:34Speaker 34: retired early by now, you know? And he goes, because
- 34:38Speaker 34: I was just doing my job. He said, you know,
- 34:40Speaker 34: I wasn't that much older than them, and... He said
- 34:43Speaker 34: there were other officers that did for their kids and stuff.
- 34:46Speaker 9: He said, I just don't know.
- 34:48Speaker 34: I just was there to protect them, and I just
- 34:51Speaker 34: never did. And I'm like, well, I'm disappointed in you.
- 34:55Speaker 3: But he was up close and personal right there?
- 34:59Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 30: Wow.
- 35:00Speaker 3: For the whole thing.
- 35:01Speaker 34: And then when the British invasion really started opening up
- 35:03Speaker 34: after that, you know, like the Dave Clark Five, I
- 35:06Speaker 34: remember him telling me a story of how they were
- 35:09Speaker 34: in this penthouse suite, you know, at the Plaza, and.
- 35:13Speaker 34: There was a girl that ended up somehow finding out
- 35:17Speaker 34: where their room was, ended up getting a room up
- 35:20Speaker 34: on the same floor somehow and scaled the outside of
- 35:24Speaker 34: the building trying to get to their window. So he said,
- 35:28Speaker 34: you know, he's working. And I understand that, you know,
- 35:31Speaker 34: and I know you, Tom, know this too. Like, you know,
- 35:34Speaker 34: you're in these situations like with celebrities and celebrities people
- 35:38Speaker 34: who are so well known and, and, but you're, you're working,
- 35:41Speaker 34: you know what I mean? You're not like, Oh my gosh,
- 35:43Speaker 34: you know, you're not really like, uh, I don't know,
- 35:46Speaker 34: you know, like, uh, all crazed over them because you're
- 35:49Speaker 34: doing your job, you know? And, um, for him, I
- 35:52Speaker 34: think in these situations, uh, especially at this time, it
- 35:56Speaker 34: was more of a headache, you know, to stay concerned
- 35:59Speaker 34: for all of these people. So I got, I got
- 36:01Speaker 34: the best story.
- 36:03Speaker 3: I got to ask you, how did you climb up
- 36:04Speaker 3: that high to get to the window there?
- 36:07Speaker 34: So I think that she had a floor, like, on
- 36:09Speaker 34: that level and ended up stealing the outside, trying to, like,
- 36:13Speaker 34: sneak in their window, I guess.
- 36:16Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 36:16Speaker 34: But, you know, they had to call the fire department,
- 36:18Speaker 34: and he said it was just, it was an absolute nightmare. And,
- 36:21Speaker 34: you know, it's Midtown, so it's just crazy.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Well, that was good of you to climb that high. Right, right.
- 36:31Speaker 16: Oh, yes, it was great.
- 36:33Speaker 3: And I want to talk about your podcast because It's
- 36:38Speaker 3: fantastic and I have to say I was privileged to
- 36:42Speaker 3: be a guest and Nicole actually and her husband actually
- 36:48Speaker 3: came to my house and I have a really cool
- 36:52Speaker 3: little music room filled with memorabilia so that was the
- 36:56Speaker 3: backdrop of the show and I was so happy to
- 37:00Speaker 3: be part of your early launch of the show although
- 37:05Speaker 3: I don't You've been doing it now for a while.
- 37:08Speaker 3: And I love it. I'm telling you, you are such
- 37:11Speaker 3: a natural. The way you produce it, the camera angles,
- 37:16Speaker 3: it's so professional. Of course, that's your world. You came
- 37:18Speaker 3: from that world. And so you know the look and
- 37:22Speaker 3: the chemistry involved and all that. But I was really
- 37:25Speaker 3: honored to be on your show. And people really enjoyed
- 37:30Speaker 3: it as well. I saw a lot of the comments.
- 37:32Speaker 3: So continued success with that one.
- 37:35Speaker 34: Thank you so much. It was so fun doing that
- 37:38Speaker 34: episode with you because I feel like every time we
- 37:40Speaker 34: get together, you know, you have the best stories too.
- 37:44Speaker 34: I would definitely put you up at like the top
- 37:46Speaker 34: three of people I know is like, you know, such
- 37:49Speaker 34: an amazing storyteller. You've had a front row seat, you know,
- 37:53Speaker 34: in the entertainment world for so long and have come
- 37:56Speaker 34: across so many people. And it was such an honor
- 38:00Speaker 34: to be able to be in your space. So thank
- 38:03Speaker 34: you again for having us. And you know, to look
- 38:06Speaker 34: around and see, you know, all these milestones in your
- 38:11Speaker 34: career and see things really come to life, you know
- 38:15Speaker 34: what I mean, as you're telling it. And your drum
- 38:18Speaker 34: set there, like, the focal point, I loved, like, you know,
- 38:20Speaker 34: in the background.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:23Speaker 34: It was so great to just... I love those, like, conversations.
- 38:26Speaker 34: And we can take the show on the road and
- 38:28Speaker 34: go in person. It's even better, you know? And, you know, TV, I...
- 38:34Speaker 34: I love interviewing. I love my job. I love, like,
- 38:37Speaker 34: storytelling and finding out people's stories.
- 38:39Speaker 9: And I always have.
- 38:41Speaker 34: But, you know, especially with the news, you're limited with
- 38:44Speaker 34: how much time you have. And everything, you know, it
- 38:47Speaker 34: seems like, you know, every day it's, like, quicker and quicker.
- 38:51Speaker 34: You know, you have to try and get as much
- 38:53Speaker 34: in as you can. And I feel like with podcasts and,
- 38:57Speaker 34: you know, talk radio such as this, we're able to just, like,
- 39:01Speaker 34: take a little bit of a breath. and get more
- 39:05Speaker 34: to the root of the story. You know what I mean?
- 39:07Speaker 34: You don't have to rush it as much, and you're
- 39:08Speaker 34: not just skimming the surface. You're able to go deeper
- 39:12Speaker 34: and have these conversations that I think a lot of
- 39:14Speaker 34: people want to have, you know, and have such great stories,
- 39:18Speaker 34: and we can relate so well to one another, but
- 39:21Speaker 34: we just sometimes don't take the time or make the
- 39:24Speaker 34: time to do so. So having this show mostly together
- 39:28Speaker 34: definitely allowed me to do and continue to do what
- 39:32Speaker 34: I really, really love and just learned so much. And
- 39:36Speaker 34: I walk away from like every guest. I'm like, wow,
- 39:39Speaker 34: we really are more alike than we realize.
- 39:45Speaker 3: If we just took the time to find out, You know,
- 39:49Speaker 3: because when you're, I had a friend who was going
- 39:52Speaker 3: back and forth and, you know, nasty emails and texts.
- 39:56Speaker 3: I said, you know what I found? I said, stop
- 39:58Speaker 3: the texts, stop the emails, pick up the phone and
- 40:02Speaker 3: talk in person. Because I found that most people, when
- 40:06Speaker 3: you have a problem with or a little misunderstanding or
- 40:08Speaker 3: whatever it might be, the minute you verbally hear their
- 40:12Speaker 3: voice and they hear yours, they're not like that. They're easier.
- 40:19Speaker 3: The problem is mostly solved because you're communicating differently than
- 40:24Speaker 3: in words. Because a text and an email, you can
- 40:27Speaker 3: read it so many different ways.
- 40:29Speaker 33: Right.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Take the time to passionately. And that's, I love when
- 40:35Speaker 3: you sometimes don't have a guest and you just are
- 40:39Speaker 3: talking about life and your take on life. You did
- 40:45Speaker 3: one that I... I kept, and it's so insightful. Um, it, you're, you're, you're,
- 40:52Speaker 3: you're like a motivational speaker. Yeah. You can teach people,
- 40:58Speaker 3: you can teach people how to be mostly together because
- 41:02Speaker 3: we're all not, we're all not, we're not together. We're not,
- 41:06Speaker 3: everything's perfect. And you know, when people say, you know,
- 41:09Speaker 3: do you have any regrets in life? No, I don't
- 41:11Speaker 3: have any, they're lying. they're lying i have regrets everybody
- 41:15Speaker 3: has regrets but someone says no i would never change
- 41:18Speaker 3: anything and blah blah blah they're not telling the truth
- 41:21Speaker 3: you know and so there are things that we could
- 41:24Speaker 3: do a better and live over or i would have
- 41:27Speaker 3: done it differently mom i'm put my hand up on
- 41:30Speaker 3: the first one you know but i love how you
- 41:34Speaker 3: put things in perspective And nothing is written down. You are,
- 41:39Speaker 3: you are talking, you know, I don't, when I, I
- 41:42Speaker 3: just came back from Atlantic city and I had a,
- 41:46Speaker 3: I was a guest speaker there and, and the people
- 41:50Speaker 3: before me were reading their speeches and, you know, and,
- 41:53Speaker 3: and notes and all that stuff. You don't do that.
- 41:56Speaker 3: And I don't do that. If you speak from the heart,
- 41:59Speaker 3: If you speak from the heart, you're going to be
- 42:01Speaker 3: mostly together. And you're going to get it. You're going
- 42:06Speaker 3: to get it right. And more believable, more believable. I
- 42:12Speaker 3: had a president of a company come to me and
- 42:17Speaker 3: he gave an employee speech. And he said to me afterwards,
- 42:22Speaker 3: he came to me. I don't know why. And he
- 42:24Speaker 3: closes the door and he goes, how did I do?
- 42:26Speaker 3: I said, well, you did okay. I said, you did okay.
- 42:29Speaker 3: But I said, next time don't read. Don't read what
- 42:33Speaker 3: you are thinking from your heart. And it's like, you know,
- 42:38Speaker 3: he's looking down and I want to thank everyone for,
- 42:42Speaker 3: and he turns the page. And thank you for being here.
- 42:45Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 42:46Speaker 5: That kind of thing.
- 42:47Speaker 3: And so it's more, but that's you. that is you. And,
- 42:52Speaker 3: you know, people love you for that. And, um, you know,
- 42:55Speaker 3: so I'm just happy that, you know, we connected. I'm
- 42:59Speaker 3: really just happy that we connected and have the stories
- 43:03Speaker 3: to tell.
- 43:04Speaker 34: We connected like a few months before, uh, I left
- 43:08Speaker 34: channel three and I'm like so grateful for that. And
- 43:11Speaker 34: I feel like I wasn't even supposed to be in
- 43:13Speaker 34: the newsroom at the time that I had seen you
- 43:15Speaker 34: in passing when you were there to do an interview
- 43:17Speaker 34: with Scott. And, um, It's so funny after all these years, right?
- 43:21Speaker 34: I've been in Connecticut now for 12 years, you know,
- 43:24Speaker 34: that we just are paths that never crossed in person.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Well, you don't know this, but the one time I
- 43:30Speaker 3: was there to do the show with Scott and I
- 43:34Speaker 3: asked for you. I said, is Nicole here? Oh, no,
- 43:37Speaker 3: she's not here today. OK, because I wanted to introduce
- 43:41Speaker 3: myself to you. And to tell you, you know, I'm
- 43:43Speaker 3: a fan. I love watching you. But you weren't there.
- 43:46Speaker 3: So that day, that day was a pleasant surprise. I
- 43:49Speaker 3: look across the room and there you are. And so
- 43:52Speaker 3: I had to go up to you. And then you
- 43:53Speaker 3: said to me, you know, because when we were talking Beatles,
- 43:56Speaker 3: do you mind if I hug you? I said, absolutely not.
- 44:01Speaker 9: I'm a hugger.
- 44:02Speaker 7: Yeah, me too.
- 44:03Speaker 3: And that's the Italian in me for sure. But, you know,
- 44:07Speaker 3: and a lot of people don't know that you're a
- 44:09Speaker 3: great singer. You sang in a band, right?
- 44:14Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 34: So crazy. Quick side note. Yeah, I met my husband
- 44:19Speaker 34: in the news. He was behind the scenes. I was
- 44:20Speaker 34: in front of the scenes. And, yeah, I was 22,
- 44:25Speaker 34: 23 years old at the time. And he goes, you know,
- 44:28Speaker 34: we have a musical connection. We're talking about he likes
- 44:31Speaker 34: the Beatles, too. He's a big Stones fan, though, too.
- 44:33Speaker 34: So we were like, hmm, Beatles or Stones. You know,
- 44:35Speaker 34: we had that debate, of course.
- 44:37Speaker 33: For a while.
- 44:39Speaker 3: He's a Rolling Stone.
- 44:40Speaker 34: What did you say?
- 44:41Speaker 3: He's a Rolling Stone, so don't worry about it.
- 44:44Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 44:45Speaker 34: He does love the Beatles.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Great guy. Really great guy.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 44:51Speaker 34: He found out that I sang. I've sung on and
- 44:54Speaker 34: off my whole life. He was in a band and
- 44:57Speaker 34: they were recording a five-song EP and needed a backup singer.
- 45:01Speaker 34: I passed the audition and they asked me to join
- 45:04Speaker 34: the band and We were basically working overnights in the
- 45:07Speaker 34: news from Sunday to Friday morning, Sunday night to Friday morning.
- 45:12Speaker 34: And then we would take a quick nap. And then
- 45:15Speaker 34: all of us, you know, we packed the gear in
- 45:16Speaker 34: the car and we drive to Boston. And we kind
- 45:19Speaker 34: of had the Cambridge circuit. But we did used to
- 45:21Speaker 34: play the Hard Rock in Boston, Hard Rock Cafe. So
- 45:25Speaker 34: we had a blast. It was so much fun. Again,
- 45:28Speaker 34: I did not sleep a lot. You're just like on
- 45:31Speaker 34: the move. but it was such a blast and I
- 45:35Speaker 34: would love to like sing again in that capacity maybe
- 45:38Speaker 34: when the kids are a little older like that because obviously.
- 45:41Speaker 5: It's late night but you know.
- 45:43Speaker 34: We have a music room and guitars on the wall
- 45:46Speaker 34: and we're always playing and you know.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Hanging out they're already raised with the greatest influence and
- 45:53Speaker 3: that's you and your husband and I have to wrap
- 45:57Speaker 3: it up but if someone wanted to be you what's
- 46:00Speaker 3: the best advice you could give them.
- 46:04Speaker 34: Ooh, I think I would say, so if someone wanted
- 46:09Speaker 34: to be me, I think you need to be grounded
- 46:15Speaker 34: and grateful for every day. And in those moments when
- 46:19Speaker 34: you feel like you're getting overwhelmed, you know, whether it
- 46:22Speaker 34: be something really exciting and positive, right? Or whether it
- 46:27Speaker 34: be something really hard, you know, the weight of the world,
- 46:31Speaker 34: you know, you just stay grounded. And always tap into
- 46:34Speaker 34: that gratitude.
- 46:37Speaker 3: That's it. That's you. That's you. Well, I thank you
- 46:40Speaker 3: for being my first guest today. I thank you for
- 46:43Speaker 3: getting up so early to.
- 46:47Speaker 33: Be.
- 46:48Speaker 3: And, you know, I hope the world will become mostly together.
- 46:52Speaker 5: And I'll end it with this.
- 46:56Speaker 3: The Beatles, because she loves you and we love you.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Thanks, Nicole.
- 47:00Speaker 34: I love you, and goodbye with a little help from
- 47:03Speaker 34: my friends, friends like Tom Cantone.
- 47:05Speaker 3: There you go.
- 47:06Speaker 34: Thank you for having me.
- 47:07Speaker 28: Perfect.
- 47:08Speaker 3: You're the best. Thanks, Nicole.
- 47:10Speaker 36: Bye, Tom.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Love you.
- 47:11Speaker 13: Love you, too.
- 47:20Speaker 10: Slow traffic making your way over the Gold Star Bridge.
- 47:27Speaker 10: Route 12 is slow in both directions in Groton. Route

- 47:44Speaker 5: No, you forgot the whole thing.
- 47:45Speaker 7: Well, I'll put that in after.
- 47:47Speaker 3: No, I'm saying this line.
- 47:48Speaker 7: Okay, you say that one. Go ahead and say it.
- 47:51Speaker 16: Preston Trading Post, hard to find, impossible to forget.
- 47:54Speaker 7: What's my line?
- 47:56Speaker 33: This one.
- 47:58Speaker 7: We should just do this. No, you do this. You
- 48:00Speaker 7: do this line. So, yes, we may be a little
- 48:03Speaker 7: off the beaten path.
- 48:05Speaker 13: That's only because the beaten path doesn't have this much
- 48:08Speaker 13: good stuff in it.
- 48:09Speaker 33: On it.
- 48:10Speaker 4: On it.
- 48:11Speaker 37: So instead of turning your house into a construction zone
- 48:13Speaker 37: for weeks, you know what's a great way to give
- 48:15Speaker 37: your house a facelift and a fresh new look?

- 48:45Speaker 39: and read the fine print with me.
- 48:47Speaker 33: Come here.
- 48:47Speaker 39: Come a little closer to the radio because, my friend,
- 48:51Speaker 39: if you're living in.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Basra, East Lyme, New London, Old Lyme, Salem, Waterford, Montville,
- 48:58Speaker 1: or old Zabrook, you are paying some of the highest
- 49:01Speaker 1: electric rates in the entire country.
- 49:04Speaker 16: And part of that bill isn't even electricity.
- 49:07Speaker 39: It's hidden charges that Hartford buried there so nobody voted
- 49:12Speaker 39: on that. It's time to get those charges off of
- 49:15Speaker 39: your bill and make legislators own them.
- 49:18Speaker 7: No gimmicks.
- 49:19Speaker 3: This is disgusting.
- 49:20Speaker 39: Of the highest order don't ever forget you cannot give

- 51:24Speaker 7: Russia has not ceased firing. I'm Dave Anthony, Fox News.
- 51:28Speaker 42: Attacking energy facilities in Ukraine again today, from a power
- 51:31Speaker 42: plant to a gas production facility. The day after President
- 51:34Speaker 42: Trump surprised Ukraine, announcing on Truth Social that Russia and
- 51:37Speaker 42: Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire.
- 51:39Speaker 43: President Zelensky says his country keeps agreeing to halt attacks
- 51:42Speaker 43: on energy facilities, but Russia never complies.
- 51:46Speaker 31: It was clear Putin does not read through social.
- 51:49Speaker 43: The Kremlin hasn't publicly acknowledged President Trump's post. The Ukrainian
- 51:53Speaker 43: leader called the president's deal to buy diesel from Russia
- 51:56Speaker 43: a gift for Vladimir Putin.
- 51:58Speaker 3: That's Fox's Jonathan Savage.
- 51:59Speaker 42: The president announced that diesel deal with Russia last week,
- 52:01Speaker 42: trying to bring down high diesel prices. But Democrats and
- 52:03Speaker 42: some Republicans in Congress are critically of the agreement. allowing
- 52:06Speaker 42: Russia to export diesel fuel to the U.S.
- 52:08Speaker 7: And other countries.
- 52:09Speaker 42: President Trump's also considering getting involved in Saudi Arabia's fight
- 52:12Speaker 42: against Iran, backed with the militants who've been bombing the
- 52:15Speaker 42: airport in Riyadh for several days. An attack yesterday killed one.
- 52:18Speaker 42: Thirteen died Saturday when at.
- 52:20Speaker 7: Least one ballistic.
- 52:21Speaker 40: Missiles slammed into Terminal 3 as it was packed with passengers,
- 52:25Speaker 40: first responders rushing to the scene in ambulances and helicopters,
- 52:28Speaker 40: evacuating many of the hundreds who were injured. This was
- 52:31Speaker 40: the second such attack in just 48 hours and does
- 52:34Speaker 40: raise questions about if the United States could come to
- 52:36Speaker 40: the defense of Saudi Arabia and launch a new round
- 52:38Speaker 40: of strikes against this Iranian proxy group.
- 52:41Speaker 42: Fox's Trey Engston, Tel Aviv. There are still about 150,000
- 52:44Speaker 42: power outages in the Florida Panhandle where Hurricane Isaias hit
- 52:47Speaker 42: Friday night into Saturday as a Category 2 storm. Fox
- 52:50Speaker 42: weather's Katie Burns in Milton.
- 52:51Speaker 44: This is where the strongest winds from the storm hit,
- 52:55Speaker 44: and we are seeing the most significant structural damage to
- 52:57Speaker 44: the roof. Ended up in a parking lot behind me here.
- 53:00Speaker 44: That's how powerful these winds were. The good news, power
- 53:03Speaker 44: companies are saying roughly 95% of customers should expect to
- 53:06Speaker 44: get their power back by tonight here in Florida. But
- 53:09Speaker 44: the damage extends well beyond downed power lines and trees.
- 53:12Speaker 42: Now, there are at least four deaths blamed on ECIS,
- 53:15Speaker 42: two in Florida, two in Alabama, where there's also storm damage.
- 53:19Speaker 42: America's listening to Fox News.
- 53:22Speaker 28: When it comes to supplements, two things matter most. It works,
- 53:25Speaker 28: and you can trust it. Rather than just tell you
- 53:28Speaker 28: about Relief Factor, we hear from people every single day
- 53:30Speaker 28: whose lives have changed, and we'd like you to hear
- 53:32Speaker 28: their stories. At 65, William decided to put Relief Factor
- 53:36Speaker 28: to the test by stopping it completely.
- 53:38Speaker 33: I did that.
- 53:39Speaker 28: When everyday aches and pains returned, he knew it was
- 53:42Speaker 28: making a difference. Now he says he can't be without it,
- 53:45Speaker 28: and he can hop right out of bed every morning.

- 53:50Speaker 28: for a short time because I'm dumb. Now, over 10
- 53:52Speaker 28: years later, I have seen a huge difference in my life.

- 54:25Speaker 32: I'm Sean Murphy. Mix of sun and clouds today with
- 54:28Speaker 32: a high in the low 70s. Norwich police arrested 22-year-old
- 54:32Speaker 32: Jaden Dessert Saturday night after he allegedly pointed a gun
- 54:36Speaker 32: at someone and tried to force his way into a
- 54:38Speaker 32: Boswell Avenue apartment. Surveillance footage and witness statements linked him
- 54:43Speaker 32: to the incident. Firefighters rescued a driver trapped inside a
- 54:48Speaker 32: car submerged in a brook on Montville Road in Norwich
- 54:52Speaker 32: early Saturday morning. Crews stabilized the vehicle and removed the
- 54:57Speaker 32: driver's door before freeing the occupant, who was transported to
- 55:01Speaker 32: a hospital. Norwich police arrested 68-year-old Joseph Dunyon after he
- 55:07Speaker 32: allegedly grabbed and forcibly kissed a 14-year-old girl at her
- 55:11Speaker 32: school bus stop on Boswell Avenue Friday. He faces charges
- 55:16Speaker 32: including third-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.
- 55:20Speaker 32: He was held on $ 150, 000 bond and is due in
- 55:23Speaker 32: court October 13th. New London police are investigating a suspected
- 55:28Speaker 32: shooting last week near Chapel Street and Griswold Court. Officers
- 55:32Speaker 32: found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and
- 55:35Speaker 32: transported him to a hospital. His condition is unknown and
- 55:39Speaker 32: police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Westerly
- 55:44Speaker 32: is seeking up to $ 625, 000 in federal community development block
- 55:49Speaker 32: grant funding for four projects, including $ 375, 000 for Park Avenue
- 55:54Speaker 32: infrastructure improvements. A public hearing is scheduled for November.
- 55:59Speaker 13: 2nd at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. I'm Sean Murphy.
- 56:04Speaker 13: When news breaks, we break in.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Oh man that gets me in the mood gets me
- 56:27Speaker 3: in the mood for my favorite movie and well it
- 56:31Speaker 3: was ranked the number one movie of all time anyway
- 56:33Speaker 3: godfather one and two i can't get enough of it's
- 56:36Speaker 3: the kind of thing that you know every time you
- 56:38Speaker 3: see it on tv you just have to watch it
- 56:40Speaker 3: again and I'm pitching myself because I got to know
- 56:45Speaker 3: a very good friend of mine, and we've been lifelong
- 56:49Speaker 3: friends now, who starred in the movie. He's my guest today,
- 56:54Speaker 3: Gianni Russo, who played Carlo. And, you know, I love
- 57:00Speaker 3: that character, Carlo. So, Carlo, Gianni, I see you're both
- 57:05Speaker 3: to me. Welcome to the show.
- 57:07Speaker 33: Well, thank you for having me on, my man. That's
- 57:11Speaker 33: a new vocation for you, huh?
- 57:13Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 57:14Speaker 3: I'm play acting, man. I love doing my thing and
- 57:20Speaker 3: talking to great people like you and sharing our stories
- 57:23Speaker 3: with the listeners out there. They're tired of politics and
- 57:27Speaker 3: all that stuff. They love entertainment.
- 57:30Speaker 5: They love to unplug and hear stories.
- 57:33Speaker 3: You are the greatest storyteller I have ever seen. It's funny.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Your book, Hollywood Godfather... I literally read nonstop. I could
- 57:43Speaker 3: not put it down. I couldn't wait for the next chapter.
- 57:46Speaker 3: You know, with your pinch me moments with Marilyn Monroe. No,
- 57:52Speaker 3: Marilyn Monroe.
- 57:54Speaker 33: Are you kidding me? I get teased about that a
- 57:57Speaker 33: lot because, oh yeah, he wrote Marilyn Monroe and then
- 58:00Speaker 33: you turn the page and there's a picture of us.
- 58:02Speaker 5: I know.
- 58:03Speaker 3: I know. You washed her hair.
- 58:05Speaker 5: Are you kidding?
- 58:07Speaker 33: That's how I met her. Tell the story. I met her,
- 58:09Speaker 33: a troop officer. caught me on the street. He said,
- 58:13Speaker 33: how come you're not in school? And I laughed at
- 58:15Speaker 33: him because I was already running. I was a personal
- 58:17Speaker 33: runner for Frank Costello. And as I mentioned, I'm moving
- 58:21Speaker 33: into his apartment now. When he died in the 73,
- 58:23Speaker 33: he left it to me. And for the audience that
- 58:25Speaker 33: doesn't know who this guy was, he was called the
- 58:28Speaker 33: prime minister of the mob. Everybody respected him. And, uh,
- 58:33Speaker 33: so I went to a continuation school, Wilford Academy. And the,
- 58:39Speaker 33: Off head of head was Myron Monroe. I couldn't believe it.
- 58:42Speaker 33: Because I saw something like it hot maybe 15 times
- 58:44Speaker 33: in the theater already.
- 58:47Speaker 3: What was that like to get to know her? What
- 58:49Speaker 3: kind of person was she? Oh, I mean.
- 58:52Speaker 33: We got so close just because of, you know, we
- 58:56Speaker 33: started talking and her upbringing was not the norm at all.
- 59:02Speaker 33: She went from, you know, different reform schools back and
- 59:05Speaker 33: forth and whatever. And then we hit it off because
- 59:09Speaker 33: when I got polio when I was five, I was
- 59:13Speaker 33: quarantined in Bellevue, most people don't know that, for five years.
- 59:18Speaker 33: I was part of the whole Jonas Salt experiment, thank God.
- 59:22Speaker 33: And here I am, you know, 83 years of age
- 59:25Speaker 33: and very healthy and living a life I couldn't believe.
- 59:29Speaker 5: It was I didn't know that you were part of
- 59:31Speaker 5: the Jonas Salk experiment.
- 59:32Speaker 3: That's a first for me.
- 59:33Speaker 5: I thought I knew everything.
- 59:35Speaker 33: Wow. I don't think it's a negative. I think it's
- 59:39Speaker 33: a positive. To me, it's... I'll tell you right now, Tom,
- 59:45Speaker 33: it changed my life. To go from the neighborhood, I
- 59:51Speaker 33: went to a doctor, and the next thing you know,
- 59:53Speaker 33: they sent an ambulance and picked me up because it
- 59:55Speaker 33: was so contagious. I remember well, it was August 7th, 1949.
- 1:00:00Speaker 33: I went to Bellevue here, right in New York, but
- 1:00:03Speaker 33: I was there for five years.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Well, you've had quite a life and still do. I've
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: never seen you stop. Every time we talk, you're doing something.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: You're doing a movie in Prague. You're doing some type
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: of bit. You're a performer. For people that know out there,
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Gianni has a great live theater act and I've been
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: blessed to have booked him before and He walks you
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: through the songs and the Sinatra and all of that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: Everybody loves your show, but everyone loves you.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: That's the whole thing.
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: My wife and I, this is a great story.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: We were at a restaurant in New York City. I
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: forget the name, but you will. Mine and mine are
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: in business having dinner, and a bottle of wine comes over,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: and the waiter tips the wine and says, and there's
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: a stunt by the gentleman over there, and we look
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: over there, and there's this guy sitting in the corner,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: and we look over, and this is handsome, good-looking guy,
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: and he tips his hand to us like, that's from me.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: It was you.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: You know, that's the kind of class act you are.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: You know, just incredible.
- 1:01:18Speaker 33: Well, yeah, I mean, you were so generous to me
- 1:01:20Speaker 33: all the way through. I mean, you're responsible for a
- 1:01:24Speaker 33: lot of my success also because of it. He believed
- 1:01:27Speaker 33: in me, promoted me. In fact, that picture I found
- 1:01:29Speaker 33: I sent you the other day, I don't even remember
- 1:01:32Speaker 33: when that was. That's got to be 20 years ago.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: Oh, no, that was when I was at the Sands
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: in Atlantic City.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: And we debuted you.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: We gave you your casino debut. It was wonderful. All
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: the good fellows came out.
- 1:01:51Speaker 33: My career has always been around mob people. And then
- 1:01:55Speaker 33: when I got into show business, I didn't realize how
- 1:01:57Speaker 33: it could pay off. You know, they used to come
- 1:02:00Speaker 33: in and fight over checks. I'm probably the only person
- 1:02:04Speaker 33: that I know who actually, I worked Feinstein's right down
- 1:02:10Speaker 33: the street from my house on 61st and Park. I
- 1:02:13Speaker 33: was there every Monday night. They didn't want to book
- 1:02:15Speaker 33: anybody else. Because all the bobsleys used to come there
- 1:02:18Speaker 33: with their girlfriends and wives and whatever. And they'd be
- 1:02:21Speaker 33: sending bottles to each other. The checks were the biggest checks.
- 1:02:25Speaker 33: I meet Joe all the time, the general manager. He said,
- 1:02:29Speaker 33: we never made more money each night that you were
- 1:02:32Speaker 33: there than anybody else.
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: Yeah, we had a following.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Still do.
- 1:02:37Speaker 33: Most of them are in jail now, though.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: Well, I can believe that. Well, listen, you escaped jail.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: I mean, it's in your book, so I can talk
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: about it. But you actually killed a guy in Vegas
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: at your nightclub who happened to be one of the
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: gang guys, Pablo Escobar, in Mexico.
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: And they put a hit on you.
- 1:03:05Speaker 33: I went to a lady's, I didn't know who you were.
- 1:03:08Speaker 33: This was my club called State Street in Vegas, which
- 1:03:11Speaker 33: was a huge success. And we had all kinds of
- 1:03:14Speaker 33: people come in. In fact, Steve Schripper and I talk
- 1:03:18Speaker 33: about it all the time because Steve Schripper was my
- 1:03:21Speaker 33: doorman while he was going to UNLV. Wow. Because he
- 1:03:25Speaker 33: was a big guy.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:26Speaker 33: And this guy came in and he opened a big
- 1:03:30Speaker 33: check because he was Caesar's Palace guest. And he was
- 1:03:34Speaker 33: drinking Cristal and doing that. The next thing I know,
- 1:03:36Speaker 33: he breaks the Cristal bottle and he stabs the girl
- 1:03:39Speaker 33: with it in the face.
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: That's the only reason I went over there, because.
- 1:03:44Speaker 33: I told Steve, I said, get over there. He said, no,
- 1:03:47Speaker 33: I ain't going over there, man, that guy's crazy. So
- 1:03:49Speaker 33: I went over, I said, let me tell you something.
- 1:03:51Speaker 33: I said, go out the back door, because I never
- 1:03:53Speaker 33: knew who was in there, not in there. I said,
- 1:03:55Speaker 33: those sirens are coming for you. He said, no, mon.
- 1:03:58Speaker 33: I said, what do you mean, no, mon? And with that,
- 1:04:02Speaker 33: I didn't know he had the bottle yet. So he
- 1:04:04Speaker 33: goes for me. Fortunately, I was agile enough. I went back,
- 1:04:08Speaker 33: and he slit my throat, my chin. He went for
- 1:04:11Speaker 33: my throat, but he slit my chin. Now I'm bleeding,
- 1:04:14Speaker 33: and I'm saying, wait a minute. This is how crazy
- 1:04:18Speaker 33: I am. I have to divert the guy. I said,
- 1:04:20Speaker 33: you know, I waited six months for the Sea Island
- 1:04:24Speaker 33: Cotton shirt. You just ruined it. Because I was just
- 1:04:26Speaker 33: trying to get my hand on a gun. And I
- 1:04:30Speaker 33: shot him.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: And then, but they put a hit on you for that.
- 1:04:35Speaker 33: No kidding, but you know how I am. I wasn't
- 1:04:38Speaker 33: waiting for the hit. I went to see Pablo Escobar.
- 1:04:40Speaker 33: I went to Bogota.
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: I can't believe you showed up.
- 1:04:44Speaker 33: I said, I know how you guys are. You Maralitos
- 1:04:48Speaker 33: are going to kill my dogs, my kids, and then me.
- 1:04:51Speaker 33: Nobody's touching none of my kids. I'm here. And we
- 1:04:55Speaker 33: became friends. I can't believe you came here. Why weren't I?
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: You became friends because he loved the Godfather.
- 1:05:04Speaker 33: He didn't know I was in the Godfather. Crazy he was.
- 1:05:07Speaker 33: He just went after this guy. And then, you know,
- 1:05:10Speaker 33: he was looking at me. Wait a minute. You were
- 1:05:13Speaker 33: Carlo in The Godfather. I said, yeah. And he came
- 1:05:15Speaker 33: over and hugged me.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: And then they reenacted that scene, you know, and you
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: thought they were going to kill you.
- 1:05:23Speaker 33: Oh, yeah. Oh, no, he wanted to. I thought maybe
- 1:05:27Speaker 33: that's how he's playing with my head. Right, right. And, no,
- 1:05:33Speaker 33: that's why, like you mentioned, my last book, Mafia Sequence,
- 1:05:36Speaker 33: I'm about to do a third book, and I'm saying
- 1:05:38Speaker 33: to myself, don't I want to get rid of all
- 1:05:40Speaker 33: these books too fast? Mafia Secrets is still a bestseller
- 1:05:43Speaker 33: right now. You go on Amazon, it's insane.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: I can't put it down.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: Because you had a ringside seat to things that people
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: only heard about or talked about, but you were there.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: And that's why I love the generation of people. important
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: people that were there you know and in my life
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: I've been blessed to know some that you know the
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: American history was was your front row seat and you
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: know it's just it just really is impressive how you
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: have taken that career and you've made it into a
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: movie star I mean you know it's funny I I
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: know two Godfathers, personally, Al Pacino and you. Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: And I know one living Beatle, which is Ringo.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: I know one living Beach Boy, which is Mike Love.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: And by the way, you mentioned Steve Sciarrappa. For those
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: people who don't know, Steve Sciarrappa was Bobby Bacalar in
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: The Sopranos. The Sopranos, yeah. And Steve is a good
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: friend of mine, too. In fact, Steve used to book
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: entertainment interviews in Vegas.
- 1:06:51Speaker 33: Oh yeah at the Riviera yeah he left me went
- 1:06:55Speaker 33: over to the Riviera and booked an entertainment there and
- 1:06:59Speaker 33: he went on and had a great career we're still friends.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: Oh yeah he's a great guy in fact I.
- 1:07:05Speaker 33: Was him and Willie boy him and that watch what
- 1:07:09Speaker 33: he has he's so crazy with that dog guy well
- 1:07:12Speaker 33: I was.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: Lucky enough to bring all the Sopranos together for their
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: very first full cast appearance at one of the casinos
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: when I was there and It was like the arrival
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: of the Beatles.
- 1:07:24Speaker 33: Oh, no. They're still doing them. In fact, I'm doing
- 1:07:28Speaker 33: Paisan Con this weekend.
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: Paisan Con. I didn't know that.
- 1:07:33Speaker 33: Wow. You like it. I'll be there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:07:38Speaker 33: But we're doing, at the show, a whole reunion for
- 1:07:42Speaker 33: the Goodfellas cast and the Sopranos.
- 1:07:45Speaker 8: They're all coming.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: That's great. People still love it. and a lot of
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: them are friends of mine and we keep in touch
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: and what not so yeah that should do really well
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: but what a career how did you get I can't
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: remember exactly how did you get the part in The
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Godfather and Brando became like your mentor right?
- 1:08:09Speaker 33: I'm the only person in the world I could say
- 1:08:12Speaker 33: Marlon Brando is my only acting teacher and Frank Sinatra
- 1:08:16Speaker 33: is my only singing teacher Who could say that?
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: Well, I can't.
- 1:08:22Speaker 33: But to answer your question, I had someone read me
- 1:08:27Speaker 33: the book, because I'm an illiterate, and when they read
- 1:08:30Speaker 33: it to me, then I'm reading that Joe Colombo is picketing,
- 1:08:35Speaker 33: one of the bosses of five families in New York,
- 1:08:37Speaker 33: is picketing the Godfather. He don't want the book out.
- 1:08:41Speaker 33: He don't want the movie made. So I knew him
- 1:08:44Speaker 33: through Costello. And I called him up. I said, you're
- 1:08:48Speaker 33: going to be in a club tomorrow. He's there. He
- 1:08:50Speaker 33: was on 86th Street in Brooklyn. So I flew in.
- 1:08:54Speaker 33: He didn't know that. I flew in on a red-eye
- 1:08:55Speaker 33: and went right to the club. And I said, what
- 1:08:59Speaker 33: are you doing about this? No, this can't happen. They're
- 1:09:03Speaker 33: treating the Italians as all gangsters. And I'm saying to myself,
- 1:09:07Speaker 33: I'm looking at it. Here's the guy. He's a gangster.
- 1:09:09Speaker 33: He's one of the heads of the five families in
- 1:09:11Speaker 33: New York, and he's picketing. He's come to me. He's
- 1:09:13Speaker 33: come with me in New York. I'm going now. And
- 1:09:16Speaker 33: he introduced me, thank God, to a guy called Barry Slotnick,
- 1:09:20Speaker 33: who was a great Jewish attorney at the time. And
- 1:09:24Speaker 33: they created the league, the Anti-Italian Defamation League. So I
- 1:09:35Speaker 33: make a meeting. Nobody could believe this. I said, we
- 1:09:38Speaker 33: should talk to these people. I said, we should model them.
- 1:09:42Speaker 33: So I go up to Columbus Circle. And there's all,
- 1:09:46Speaker 33: Charlie Blue Dawn, everybody just bought Paramount, and they bought
- 1:09:49Speaker 33: the rights to the Garfala. So I walk in there,
- 1:09:53Speaker 33: and I see them all in the morning, and I
- 1:09:55Speaker 33: go up to them, I say, you know, you've got
- 1:09:57Speaker 33: some problems in New York. No, we have no problems.
- 1:10:00Speaker 33: Bobby Evans was there. And I said, Bobby, I said.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: He's a film producer.
- 1:10:08Speaker 33: He's what?
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: Is he a film producer?
- 1:10:10Speaker 33: What's that?
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: He's a film producer, right?
- 1:10:13Speaker 33: Oh, my God. Well, he was the head of Paramount.
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10:16Speaker 33: No, he was the head of Paramount.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: You're dropping all these names. Most people don't know. So
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: I'm just trying to fill in.
- 1:10:22Speaker 33: And he was the president of Paramount, and he produced
- 1:10:25Speaker 33: The Godfather. Right. So with that said, I arranged a meeting.
- 1:10:29Speaker 33: He said, will he come here? I said, of course
- 1:10:31Speaker 33: he'll come here. So I go back down. I said,
- 1:10:33Speaker 33: they want you to come. We're going to Columbus Circle
- 1:10:36Speaker 33: tomorrow at 10 o'clock. So I gave him the idea.
- 1:10:39Speaker 33: I said, do me a favor. You're making a law movie.
- 1:10:42Speaker 33: You are a gangster. Let's go in there. That's who
- 1:10:46Speaker 33: you are. But bring Barry. So we bring Barry Slanik,
- 1:10:51Speaker 33: Joe Colombo and I, and one of the guys we
- 1:10:54Speaker 33: brought was Lenny Montana, who played Luke O'Brock in the movie.
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:11:01Speaker 33: We brought him just for the atmosphere as the bodyguard.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: Yeah, he looked it.
- 1:11:05Speaker 33: And they fell in love with him. So he became
- 1:11:07Speaker 33: a movie star. It was amazing.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: Well, you helped get the movie made, though, right? What's that?
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: Didn't you help get The Godfather made?
- 1:11:17Speaker 8: I did.
- 1:11:19Speaker 33: I definitely did.
- 1:11:19Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: That's how I got the part.
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: Because they didn't want.
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: The movie to be made until you stepped in.
- 1:11:26Speaker 33: Yeah. I mean, no, we got it made. Well, the book,
- 1:11:30Speaker 33: by the time all this was going on, the book
- 1:11:32Speaker 33: was already like a third print. The book was huge.
- 1:11:38Speaker 33: I mean, I'm lucky. If all these things didn't happen,
- 1:11:42Speaker 33: I don't know what I'd be doing.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: One of my two favorite scenes is when you and
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: Jimmy Conn went at it in the street where he
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: was beating me up pretty good.
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: He wasn't beating me up, though.
- 1:11:59Speaker 33: He hated me.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: That's what I heard. People tell me that, and I
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: think you've told me, too, that that was real.
- 1:12:07Speaker 45: Oh, no.
- 1:12:08Speaker 33: I mean, unbeknownst to most of the audience, even myself
- 1:12:12Speaker 33: at that time, he was supposed to play Michael.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:16Speaker 33: And Carmine Caridi, who was in a play on Broadway
- 1:12:22Speaker 33: called The Man from La Mancha, because they thought Sonny
- 1:12:25Speaker 33: should be this big guy, and Carmine Caridi was. And
- 1:12:29Speaker 33: I got involved, and then Francis Ford Coppola got involved,
- 1:12:32Speaker 33: and he just saw a movie called Panic in Needle Park,
- 1:12:36Speaker 33: the first movie that Pacino made, and he fought for
- 1:12:40Speaker 33: Pacino to play Michael. But what a choice, because Jimmy
- 1:12:45Speaker 33: was out there all the time. Jimmy was Jimmy. He
- 1:12:49Speaker 33: was one-dimensional. But Pacino, his softness and all that, I
- 1:12:53Speaker 33: think he was menacing, and then when he became the godfather,
- 1:12:57Speaker 33: that was it. And so, again, you know... These were
- 1:13:02Speaker 33: mistakes along the way that became major hits. And I
- 1:13:07Speaker 33: fortunately was in them. It was crazy.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: Well, I was really fortunate to book Al Pacino. He
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: wanted to do a one-man show. And we spent time
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: putting that together and got to know him. What a
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: wonderful guy, though. But you're right. He was Michael Corleone.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: I can't imagine... anybody playing that part but him, especially
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: when he morphed from, you know, the young kid in
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: the army, didn't want anything to do with the business
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: and all that. He became a ruthless killer, man. I mean,
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: you know, I mean, just cold all the way, but
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: it was believable, you know, especially this.
- 1:13:47Speaker 33: I'm so happy to be his friend. We're talking about something,
- 1:13:49Speaker 33: doing something.
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: Well, you should.
- 1:13:52Speaker 33: At the movie. We're still premature, but, well, I, I, I,
- 1:13:57Speaker 33: I don't talk about somebody else. Bobby De Niro went crazy.
- 1:14:01Speaker 33: But she was the only person I speak to in
- 1:14:03Speaker 33: the whole movie.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: He's fantastic. And every line in that movie, in The Godfather,
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: is a lesson in life. Keep your friends close, but
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: your enemies closer.
- 1:14:14Speaker 33: Oh, yeah. I mean, if you take the violence out
- 1:14:17Speaker 33: of The Godfather, like you just said, it's a lesson
- 1:14:20Speaker 33: in life.
- 1:14:20Speaker 31: Yeah.
- 1:14:21Speaker 33: Respect. All of that. I mean, yes, there's violence. There's killing.
- 1:14:27Speaker 33: But if you dissect all that, there is a lesson
- 1:14:31Speaker 33: in life that if you live, well, I'm a true
- 1:14:34Speaker 33: vision of that. I'm a product of living the life
- 1:14:38Speaker 33: the right way. Here I am, 83 years old. I
- 1:14:41Speaker 33: got two muscles of doom right now that will go
- 1:14:43Speaker 33: in a frog's abode. And, you know, it don't stop.
- 1:14:47Speaker 33: And I'm still doing my one-man show.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: And you're writing books and all that.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: Well, that's how you stay young, Gianni. That's how you
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: stay young.
- 1:14:56Speaker 33: I love being busy, you know, and thank God people
- 1:14:59Speaker 33: like you call me up and I do radio shows
- 1:15:02Speaker 33: and whatever I want.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: Well, I just love your take on things and, you know,
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: your opinion. And, you know, they've never, we never found
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: out what happened to JFK. We never found out what
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: happened to Jimmy Hoffa. But you have thoughts about that.
- 1:15:22Speaker 33: Oh, I know about it. I know about that. Johnny Roselli,
- 1:15:26Speaker 33: nobody realized who he was. But they hired Johnny. The
- 1:15:30Speaker 33: CIA hired Johnny Roselli and made him a marksman. Because
- 1:15:37Speaker 33: he was friends with Chanto Trefacante, another name most people
- 1:15:42Speaker 33: don't know. But he was the boss in Miami. But
- 1:15:45Speaker 33: he was good friends with Fidel Castro. So they were...
- 1:15:49Speaker 33: He and Johnny Roselli, the CIA trained as marksmen They
- 1:15:55Speaker 33: were going to go in and kill. Most people don't
- 1:15:59Speaker 33: know this at all. Joe Kennedy, when he wanted John
- 1:16:02Speaker 33: to become president, he went to the mob. Because he
- 1:16:08Speaker 33: and Frank Costello, I keep mentioning his name, they were
- 1:16:11Speaker 33: partners during Prohibition. They amassed $ 30 million in the 30s.
- 1:16:20Speaker 33: So when his son wanted to become president... He went
- 1:16:23Speaker 33: to him because he knew he needed the unions and
- 1:16:25Speaker 33: the mob and all that. And they got him to
- 1:16:27Speaker 33: be president. But Joe Kennedy screwed the mob. I mean,
- 1:16:32Speaker 33: there's no other way to say it. Because he made
- 1:16:35Speaker 33: a promise that if his son became president, they would
- 1:16:38Speaker 33: invade Cuba to give the mob back the casinos. And
- 1:16:42Speaker 33: that's the only reason the mob got involved.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: It's like a history lesson talking to you. We don't
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: have much time. I want to wrap it up. So
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: where's Jimmy Hoffa? Where's Jimmy Hoffa?
- 1:16:53Speaker 33: Jimmy Hop, I know where he is. He's at a
- 1:16:57Speaker 33: coffee table in one of my friend's basements. They compressed
- 1:17:03Speaker 33: the car. Once they took the, it was a Burgundy Buick,
- 1:17:07Speaker 33: I remember it. They took the axle out and the
- 1:17:11Speaker 33: engine and the motor block. They crushed it on Staten
- 1:17:14Speaker 33: Island and it became a two foot by three foot
- 1:17:18Speaker 33: And they were bidding on it. And my friend of
- 1:17:20Speaker 33: mine has it in his basement. He put a four
- 1:17:22Speaker 33: foot by six foot plate glass on it. It's a
- 1:17:24Speaker 33: coffee table. And he teases you when you're there. He
- 1:17:28Speaker 33: knows you well enough. He goes, what's with that? I
- 1:17:29Speaker 33: was to go with Jimmy Alpha. Nobody knows what they mean.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: You know, my favorite scene is when Michael's coming in
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: to see you after the baptism. You're sitting in the
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: chair and you're nervous as heck. And, and he's, who
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: was it who killed was it parzini or to tell
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: you you know and come on you think we're going
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: to make you maybe a you're going to make your
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: wife a widow and you're just nervous as hell and
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: then ah you think you can fool a corleone well
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: you know the original line on that was you think
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: you can fool a canton no you can't How many,
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: and when you put your foot through the window and
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: it was straining you, that was sort of a tough scene, right?
- 1:18:17Speaker 33: Oh, yeah, well, because nobody realized that old Plymouth, they
- 1:18:21Speaker 33: had to break up the break glass, so they scraped
- 1:18:24Speaker 33: the glass to break away because Coppola had the camera
- 1:18:28Speaker 33: mounted on the hood of the car. That's how they
- 1:18:31Speaker 33: got the scene where your feet go out the window.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:34Speaker 33: But, you know, I still get up sometimes to find
- 1:18:37Speaker 33: glass in my shoe.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: I did a 17-foot... Well, I'm thankful that you're still alive.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: I'm thankful that they botched the murder. And you'll always
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: be part of our family. family and your lifelong friend.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: And I just enjoy hearing your stories and always wish
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: you the best, Gianni.
- 1:18:59Speaker 33: And I appreciate our friendship, believe me. I appreciate you
- 1:19:03Speaker 33: calling me all the time, too.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: You're part of the FFL Club, and thanks a million.
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: And if I can ever do anything, let me know.
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: And keep your friends close and your enemies closer, okay? Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:15Speaker 33: I keep them in my trunk of my car, man.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: Stay well, Gianni. Thank you, thank you. We'll be right back.
- 1:19:24Speaker 34: We'll be right back.

- 1:24:04Speaker 12: It's Hugh Hewitt here with Ken and Nick Tumalo, hosts
- 1:24:06Speaker 12: of Tumalo Financial Radio, Sundays on 94.9. Guys, why do
- 1:24:11Speaker 12: taxes get overlooked in retirement planning?
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: Because the tax code is so complicated.
- 1:24:16Speaker 47: You look at it, the 401k is pre-tax money. The
- 1:24:18Speaker 47: Roth is tax-free. Your non-retirement accounts are capital gains, dividends,
- 1:24:22Speaker 47: and interest. Your Social Security is taxed by provisional income.
- 1:24:24Speaker 47: I'm giving you all these things and you're probably already confused.
- 1:24:27Speaker 47: That's why you want to build out that two-month retirement
- 1:24:29Speaker 47: checkup to see short, first long-term effects on these type
- 1:24:33Speaker 47: of things.
- 1:24:33Speaker 7: Because you never know.
- 1:24:34Speaker 47: You might have been saving well in those 401ks and
- 1:24:36Speaker 47: you might have a required minimum distribution issue at 73
- 1:24:40Speaker 47: or 75, depending on your birth. So you really don't
- 1:24:43Speaker 47: want to look at it just on a one-year basis.
- 1:24:45Speaker 47: Oh yeah, I'm going to do a Roth conversion this year.
- 1:24:47Speaker 47: It's going to take care of everything.
- 1:24:49Speaker 31: No.
- 1:24:49Speaker 47: Planning takes year over year on tax planning. You can't
- 1:24:52Speaker 47: just do it in one year.
- 1:24:53Speaker 11: Yeah, and one of the biggest things that we did
- 1:24:54Speaker 11: find with tax planning, especially for our listeners, was that
- 1:24:59Speaker 11: it has to be done over multiple years to actually
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: gain an advantage. So it's not that simple where you
- 1:25:03Speaker 11: just make one change in one year. A lot of
- 1:25:05Speaker 11: times it's the planning piece of it. And when we
- 1:25:08Speaker 11: do our two-month financial retirement checkup, it actually looks like
- 1:25:10Speaker 11: a big spreadsheet and it shows the numbers over a
- 1:25:13Speaker 11: whole bunch of years. We like to go out 24,
- 1:25:15Speaker 11: even 30 years at times when we're projecting out. Because
- 1:25:18Speaker 11: if we can pick up on some of these tax
- 1:25:19Speaker 11: things and then start to implement strategies, then what we
- 1:25:22Speaker 11: can do is put in front of you, the listeners,
- 1:25:24Speaker 11: we can put in front of them where they would
- 1:25:26Speaker 11: save money in taxes and how much over time. So
- 1:25:28Speaker 11: it starts with that Tumalo Financial Retirement Checkup.
- 1:25:30Speaker 28: Our number, 860-854-3434.

- 1:28:50Speaker 32: Norwich police arrested 22-year-old Jaden Dessert Saturday night after he
- 1:28:55Speaker 32: allegedly pointed a gun at someone and tried to force
- 1:28:58Speaker 32: his way into a Boswell Avenue apartment. Surveillance footage and
- 1:29:02Speaker 32: witness statements linked him to the incident. Firefighters rescued a
- 1:29:06Speaker 32: driver trapped inside a car submerged in a brook on
- 1:29:10Speaker 32: Montville Road in Norwich early Saturday morning. Crews stabilized the
- 1:29:14Speaker 32: vehicle and removed the driver's door before freeing the occupant.
- 1:29:19Speaker 32: who was transported to a hospital. Connecticut State Police detained
- 1:29:23Speaker 32: a man Saturday afternoon after reports he allegedly engaged in
- 1:29:27Speaker 32: a lewd act in front of children at Witch Meadow
- 1:29:30Speaker 32: Lake campground in Salem. Several parents confronted the man before
- 1:29:34Speaker 32: troopers arrived to investigate. New London police are investigating a
- 1:29:38Speaker 32: suspected shooting last week near Chapel Street and Griswold Court.
- 1:29:43Speaker 32: Officers found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound
- 1:29:46Speaker 32: and transported him to a hospital. His condition is unknown,
- 1:29:49Speaker 32: and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
- 1:29:54Speaker 32: Westerly is seeking up to $ 625, 000 in federal community development
- 1:29:58Speaker 32: block grant funding for four projects, including $ 375, 000 for Park

- 1:30:09Speaker 13: 2nd at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. I'm Sean Murphy.
- 1:30:14Speaker 13: When news breaks, we break in.
- 1:30:21Speaker 7: The Densmore Oil and Bugbee Plumbing Seat of Honor.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: I'm not the one who's so far away When I
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: feel the snake bite enter my veins Never did I
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: want to be here again And I don't.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Remember why I came.
- 1:31:04Speaker 45: Ladies and gentlemen, I am so happy that my friend
- 1:31:12Speaker 45: for a long time, Solly Erner, who is the lead singer,
- 1:31:18Speaker 45: founder of Godsmack, one of the best rock bands ever, ever,
- 1:31:25Speaker 45: got up early today to be on the show.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: They're touring all over Europe and now in the U.S.,
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: And we go back and every time Solly's in the
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: house with God smack, it's just different. It's unique. There's energy.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: It doesn't stop. It's nonstop. And there's nothing like live
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: rock and roll, nothing. So Solly Erna, welcome to the
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Tom Cantone show.
- 1:31:54Speaker 49: Actually, I'm good.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: I'm just substituting for our friendly Elsie. Uh, So fill
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: me in, man. How's the tour going?
- 1:32:04Speaker 49: It's been a hell of a year, you know. It
- 1:32:07Speaker 49: really has been nonstop, and it's been hot. This has
- 1:32:10Speaker 49: been a hot year. It seems like everywhere we played
- 1:32:13Speaker 49: in the world has been over 100 degrees. So I'm
- 1:32:17Speaker 49: really– I've never– you know, for the longest time, I
- 1:32:20Speaker 49: was like, you know what, I don't know how many
- 1:32:22Speaker 49: more winters I can stand in New England because the
- 1:32:25Speaker 49: older I get, the more I hate the cold. But
- 1:32:28Speaker 49: this year I was like, I'll take snow any day
- 1:32:31Speaker 49: of the week right now because every show has been 1,000 degrees.
- 1:32:35Speaker 49: But it's been great. It's been a good year. We
- 1:32:39Speaker 49: committed to having a very busy year. I think we're
- 1:32:42Speaker 49: on our fifth leg right now this year. So we've
- 1:32:45Speaker 49: done the states. I think we've done three rounds around
- 1:32:50Speaker 49: the states. We did Europe all the way out to
- 1:32:54Speaker 49: Eastern Europe. Bulgaria, Greece, and all that stuff. And now
- 1:33:01Speaker 49: we just finished another leg in the States. We're on
- 1:33:05Speaker 49: a small break, and then we hit one more tour
- 1:33:09Speaker 49: in October, which finishes at Mohegan Sun on the 24th,
- 1:33:15Speaker 49: I think.
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: Which is where we did the finale of Godsmack, and
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: we did a great you know, collaboration with filming and
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: recording the album live from Mohegan Sun Arena. And, you know,
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: for me, that was like a pinch me moment, you know, how.
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: Yeah, all the same.
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: Well, we're brothers and, you know, maybe it's the Italian thing.
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: I don't know, but you are, you are a special man.
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: I'm telling you, you rock the place and, you know, 10,000
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: people just can't get enough of you. And then you've
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: done me so many solids over the years. I mean,
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: you've done great stuff. When I call you, you're there.
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: And I can tell you right now, some of the
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: biggest names are not. And when we were doing something
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: for our veterans a while back, I don't know if
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: you remember, you were first to raise your hand and say,
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: I'm there. We did Vets Rock. And you didn't ask
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: for anything. You said the band and you are committed
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: to helping our veterans. And you showed up. And that's
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: half the battle of showing up. And I can tell you,
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: and for anybody listening out there, how our world is.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: I made many calls to keep these concerts going. A
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: lot of them were filled with greed. A lot of
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: them wanted money. A lot of them, you know, can't
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: do it unless you do this, this, and this. Not
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: with you. And not with a few others that ended
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: up showing up. Because, you know, you have a genuine
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: streak in you that gives back to your fans, to
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: our veterans. I just wanted to take this opportunity to
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: remind everybody, it's not just rock and roll. You know,
- 1:35:05Speaker 3: it's giving back to this country. And you have done
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: that in many ways. So a reminder to everyone, you know,
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: God Smack is more than just rock and roll. And
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: I want to thank you for that, Sully.
- 1:35:18Speaker 49: Well, I appreciate that. And, of course, we're going to
- 1:35:21Speaker 49: be there for the veterans. You know, it's one of
- 1:35:23Speaker 49: those things that I think we need to educate now
- 1:35:27Speaker 49: more than ever. You know, not only should we appreciate
- 1:35:30Speaker 49: for everything that they've done and sacrificed, but we need
- 1:35:33Speaker 49: to educate more and more and more because these institutions
- 1:35:36Speaker 49: are just stripping that history away. And I'm not one
- 1:35:40Speaker 49: of those people that are on board with that. And
- 1:35:42Speaker 49: it's funny because out here on tour, You know, sometimes
- 1:35:46Speaker 49: after you've traveled the world so many times, you know,
- 1:35:49Speaker 49: you've seen a lot. And you get to your hotel,
- 1:35:52Speaker 49: you get to your city, whether it's Berlin, Germany, or Boston, Massachusetts,
- 1:35:56Speaker 49: or wherever. And, you know, you're just like, what are
- 1:36:00Speaker 49: you going to do?
- 1:36:01Speaker 33: Go to the mall again and walk around on your
- 1:36:03Speaker 33: day off?
- 1:36:04Speaker 49: So you start to find other things to do.
- 1:36:06Speaker 33: And a lot of.
- 1:36:07Speaker 49: Times, actually, I've found myself... stop, I don't know, maybe
- 1:36:11Speaker 49: it's because I'm getting older and I just appreciate things more,
- 1:36:14Speaker 49: but I stop now and I'll stop at a monument
- 1:36:17Speaker 49: or I'll stop at a statue and I'll read the plaque. And,
- 1:36:22Speaker 49: you know, 99.9% of them are all war-based and history-based
- 1:36:28Speaker 49: of who, what generals led what war and why and
- 1:36:32Speaker 49: what they were protecting and, you know, what rights they
- 1:36:35Speaker 49: were protecting and things like that. And it's just, I
- 1:36:40Speaker 49: don't know, I'm just really fascinated with history now, and
- 1:36:44Speaker 49: I just think these kids today, these younger generations, you know,
- 1:36:49Speaker 49: they have these amazing tools that they use the wrong way,
- 1:36:53Speaker 49: you know, for iPhones and AI and social media and
- 1:36:57Speaker 49: all that stuff. They're just, everyone's so obsessed with getting
- 1:37:00Speaker 49: the thumbs up and the likes and the hearts, and
- 1:37:04Speaker 49: they should be researching stuff that's out there, you know, that...
- 1:37:09Speaker 49: that would make you proud, you know, to be from
- 1:37:11Speaker 49: this country and work a little bit harder to spread those,
- 1:37:15Speaker 49: the right messages. So whenever we get a chance and
- 1:37:18Speaker 49: God smack has been known for this over the years,
- 1:37:20Speaker 49: you know, we just have always worked with the armed forces, um,
- 1:37:24Speaker 49: ever since probably 2000, 2001, uh, when the Navy took
- 1:37:30Speaker 49: the song awake and used it for their recruit commercial
- 1:37:34Speaker 49: for six years. Um, and so, uh, You know, I
- 1:37:39Speaker 49: don't know. We've always had an attachment to the armed forces.
- 1:37:42Speaker 49: And I think I just look at it from a
- 1:37:43Speaker 49: different angle. You know, I think of these young kids
- 1:37:46Speaker 49: that are 18, 19 years old, risking their lives or
- 1:37:50Speaker 49: coming back with no limbs and things like that and
- 1:37:52Speaker 49: fighting for the freedom of this country. And I just,
- 1:37:55Speaker 49: I don't know. For me, it's something that I have
- 1:37:59Speaker 49: a lot of respect for. And it's funny, actually. I
- 1:38:03Speaker 49: just went into the other day. And ironically, at the
- 1:38:07Speaker 49: same time, there was a plane landing from Alaska, I guess,
- 1:38:11Speaker 49: because when I was coming down the escalators, there was
- 1:38:14Speaker 49: thousands of people there holding American flags and cheering. And
- 1:38:18Speaker 49: I'm like, what is going on here? I'm not that popular.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: I was just going to say, maybe it's Godsmack.
- 1:38:25Speaker 49: And sure as hell, here they come, a lot of
- 1:38:27Speaker 49: the veterans from Vietnam and other wars, were coming in.
- 1:38:30Speaker 49: I don't know exactly what the event was and where
- 1:38:33Speaker 49: they were coming back from, what event they were coming
- 1:38:36Speaker 49: back from, but they were coming back from a plane.
- 1:38:39Speaker 49: I think they said it was from Alaska. And I
- 1:38:41Speaker 49: was so happy to see that because California, they're not
- 1:38:47Speaker 49: known for supporting that kind of thing. or at least visibly,
- 1:38:51Speaker 49: that I could tell. And when I seen that, I
- 1:38:53Speaker 49: was like, oh, thank God. These elderly men coming down
- 1:38:57Speaker 49: the stairs in wheelchairs and everything else, and everybody was
- 1:39:01Speaker 49: just applauding them and waving their flags and welcoming back.
- 1:39:04Speaker 49: And I was like, that's what America is supposed to be.
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: And the young kids, as you mentioned, who didn't make it,
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: never got a chance to live their life, never got
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: a chance to go to a concert, never got a
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: chance to have a family. Never got a chance to
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: do anything that we all ended up doing because of them.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Because of them. Yeah, and you hit on it. You
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: have to travel around, and everybody complains about what's going
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: on here. But good luck going to another country. Good
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: luck going into Iraq or Afghanistan or anywhere in the
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: Middle East and speaking your mind. You're done.
- 1:39:44Speaker 7: You're done.
- 1:39:45Speaker 33: Or China.
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: Yeah, or China. You know, it just... We have to
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: count our blessings and have to realize how fortunate we are.
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: You only have 2.5% chance to be born in America.
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: I don't know if you knew that.
- 1:40:01Speaker 49: It's hard to think that way, though, when you come
- 1:40:04Speaker 49: from self-entitlement. You know what I mean?
- 1:40:06Speaker 3: That's true.
- 1:40:06Speaker 49: So that's the problem here. These kids today, they're being
- 1:40:10Speaker 49: raised with this sense of entitlement, and they don't know.
- 1:40:15Speaker 49: they don't know what this country has been through to
- 1:40:17Speaker 49: be able to give them that freedom to be able
- 1:40:19Speaker 49: to even have a phone to be entitled with. So yeah,
- 1:40:24Speaker 49: don't even get me going with this.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: You're talking to the same here because, you know, I
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: had this whole thing about social media, how it's the
- 1:40:33Speaker 3: portal of poison and, uh, and evil most of the time.
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: And these kids, they just did a study 12 year
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: old kids now with cell phones have a, 40 some
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: percent chance of being obese because they're not going outside
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: they're not get forming a band they're not playing they're
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: not doing anything they're just sitting with their phone curled
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: up in bed at night you know with their phone
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: i've seen it with my own family I mean, you know,
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: the phone has just taken away all of our creative juices.
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: We can't even speak to each other anymore because of it.
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: And you go to an airport, you go anywhere. I
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: was just at the gym yesterday and half the people
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: on the machines are on their phones. And it's just
- 1:41:18Speaker 3: I don't know. We have to just reeducate. And it
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: starts in the schools and actually absolutely starts at home.
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: You know, everything begins and ends in the home. And
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: I was fortunate to have a great Italian childhood. My
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: parents did a great job raising all of us. And
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: we were taught right and wrong. We knew what was
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: right and wrong. We didn't blame anybody else. My parents
- 1:41:41Speaker 3: didn't blame anybody else. And, you know, we took ownership
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: and responsibility. That's the way we were raised. And we
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: were just proud. You know, my mother loved the flag.
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: And that's the reason I fly the flag all the time. And,
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: you know, we were just raised with some core values.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: And it's painful, Sully. It's painful. You go to certain
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: concerts today and they're preaching anti-American stuff. They have their
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: little preaching that they do. They stop the show to
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: say how bad America is. And not a lot of
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: people are booing. And, you know, so hopefully we'll adjust
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: the sales a little bit. But I know a lot
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: about you and the band, but a lot of our
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: listeners don't. and I know how you got your name,
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: but explain to everyone how you came about naming Godsmack.
- 1:42:31Speaker 33: Oh, geez.
- 1:42:32Speaker 49: I haven't been asked this one in a while.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: I did my homework.
- 1:42:38Speaker 49: Yeah, so back in the early days, the band started
- 1:42:41Speaker 49: in 95, and we were first called The Scam because
- 1:42:47Speaker 49: we couldn't get a gig anywhere. We were a new band.
- 1:42:49Speaker 49: Nobody knew us, so I used to wait outside some
- 1:42:51Speaker 49: of the nightclubs in Boston, and when the opening, I mean,
- 1:42:56Speaker 49: we'd have like, you know, a van full of equipment
- 1:42:58Speaker 49: sitting on the side, ready to go. And then, you know,
- 1:43:01Speaker 49: the opening band would show up or whoever they were
- 1:43:03Speaker 49: opening for. And, uh, I would be like, Hey, you
- 1:43:07Speaker 49: guys are late, beat it.
- 1:43:08Speaker 33: You're not playing.
- 1:43:10Speaker 49: And like, literally act like I was from the club
- 1:43:13Speaker 49: management or whatever. And then the, you know, the owner
- 1:43:15Speaker 49: would come out or whatever and be like, where's going
- 1:43:17Speaker 49: on with this opening band? Where are they? I'm like,
- 1:43:19Speaker 49: I don't know, but we have equipment in the truck.
- 1:43:20Speaker 33: We can play.
- 1:43:21Speaker 49: And then we would like scam our way into getting
- 1:43:24Speaker 49: gigs at times. That's a true story.
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: Um, it's a great story.
- 1:43:28Speaker 49: So we were called the scam, but you know, we,
- 1:43:30Speaker 49: we knew we needed a better name. Anything at the
- 1:43:34Speaker 49: time wasn't really cool, you know, because we had passed
- 1:43:37Speaker 49: that era with the cars and, you know, all those
- 1:43:40Speaker 49: names that had stopped before.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: That's a good point. So we just didn't want that name.
- 1:43:45Speaker 49: And, uh, and, uh, and then finally one day we
- 1:43:48Speaker 49: were at rehearsal and, uh, we had to go to
- 1:43:50Speaker 49: a photo shoot. We were still shopping. We hadn't had
- 1:43:53Speaker 49: a deal yet. You know, we, we were trying to
- 1:43:56Speaker 49: get like a, a press photo and to accompany our,
- 1:44:00Speaker 49: our cassette. We had our demo on cassette at the time. And, um,
- 1:44:05Speaker 49: And we were shopping it around, sending it to radio
- 1:44:07Speaker 49: stations or, you know, labels or wherever we could try
- 1:44:10Speaker 49: to get music in the door. So we had saved
- 1:44:13Speaker 49: up about, I don't know, $ 1, 000 to hire this photographer.
- 1:44:17Speaker 49: And we had already paid her. And we were there
- 1:44:21Speaker 49: to do the photo shoot. My drummer had showed up,
- 1:44:23Speaker 49: and he had a big cold sore on his lip.
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: And, of course, we.
- 1:44:27Speaker 10: Didn't know that.
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: This is a true story, everybody.
- 1:44:30Speaker 49: Yeah, yeah, no, this is a true story. He had
- 1:44:31Speaker 49: a big cold sore on his lip. And I was,
- 1:44:34Speaker 49: you know, of course, messing with him. And, you know,
- 1:44:36Speaker 49: I'm pretty sarcastic as Boston boys. That's just how it is. And,
- 1:44:40Speaker 49: you know, I was making fun of him and saying
- 1:44:42Speaker 49: all these things like, oh, you shouldn't have been kissing
- 1:44:43Speaker 49: other men or whatever.
- 1:44:45Speaker 33: And it got worse. And that's the PG version, by
- 1:44:47Speaker 33: the way.
- 1:44:48Speaker 49: And he took it like a man, you know, and
- 1:44:50Speaker 49: he didn't say anything. And he just dealt with it.
- 1:44:52Speaker 33: And he was so mad because he.
- 1:44:53Speaker 49: Didn't want to do the photo shoot with this big
- 1:44:55Speaker 49: cold sore on his lip. And we already paid her.
- 1:44:58Speaker 49: We couldn't reschedule. So we did it, and long story short,
- 1:45:02Speaker 49: the next day I came into rehearsal, and I had
- 1:45:05Speaker 49: a big cold sore on my left in the same spot.
- 1:45:08Speaker 49: And my drummer goes, oh, I'm kissing the same guy, huh?
- 1:45:11Speaker 49: And he gave me a bunch of crap for it.
- 1:45:13Speaker 49: And my guitar player looked at me, and he said, see,
- 1:45:15Speaker 49: God just smacked you for making fun of him yesterday.
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:45:19Speaker 49: And we were like, oh, there it is. We could
- 1:45:21Speaker 49: redefine God smack right now as like instant karma. You know,
- 1:45:24Speaker 49: you make fun of someone for their hair falling out,
- 1:45:26Speaker 49: and your hair starts falling out. That's a God smack.
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: Wow. It's a great story and unusual. You know, a
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: lot of bands sit around, and, you know, the Beatles
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: were called the Quarrymen, and they were called a million
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: other things. And you're right about the. I always thought
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: about that. But there is one exception, the Beatles. Yeah,
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: the Doors.
- 1:45:48Speaker 49: I mean, there's a few great ones, you know.
- 1:45:50Speaker 31: I know.
- 1:45:50Speaker 49: But it wasn't cool at that time.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: No, but Godsmack is a word that gets your attention.
- 1:45:56Speaker 33: Well, it sure does.
- 1:45:57Speaker 49: And we definitely had a lot of people, like, you know,
- 1:46:01Speaker 49: refuse it, especially in the early days when we finally
- 1:46:05Speaker 49: got signed and we were touring the world with bands
- 1:46:07Speaker 49: like Black Sabbath. Can you imagine Black Sabbath and Godsmack.
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: Coming to Salt Lake City, Utah?
- 1:46:12Speaker 49: It was like, it was Armageddon, you know what I mean?
- 1:46:15Speaker 49: They were out there protesting the show.
- 1:46:17Speaker 33: It was brutal.
- 1:46:19Speaker 49: So, you know, listen, I don't regret my career. I
- 1:46:22Speaker 49: love my band.
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:24Speaker 49: But if there was one thing I would have probably
- 1:46:26Speaker 49: rethought when I was younger was maybe the name because
- 1:46:31Speaker 49: it certainly held us back a little bit from getting
- 1:46:35Speaker 49: on cereal boxes.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: I don't know. You didn't need it. You got to
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: where you were going anyway. And I'm so envious because
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: we're both drummers. I've said to you a million times,
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: if you ever need a drummer, I'm in the wings.
- 1:46:51Speaker 33: Yeah, okay.
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: I'm waiting, man. I'm still waiting. But I did, pinch
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: me moment time, Mike Love from the Beach Boys, the
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: Beach Boys, called me up on New Year's Eve on
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: their last song, Fun, Fun, Fun, and I played with
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: the Beach Boys on the drums, man. And to me,
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: it's such a rush. I can understand how you just
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: love it to see thousands and thousands of people out
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: there just loving what you're doing. It can't be any
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: bigger adrenaline rush than that. And it's such a natural high.
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: And I only had like two seconds of it, you know. Yeah.
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: But it was so wonderful to, you know, to be
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: on stage just to get that feeling. And then Donnie
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: Wahlberg called me up to dance with New Kids on
- 1:47:39Speaker 3: the Block, which was an embarrassment.
- 1:47:41Speaker 33: Oh, my God.
- 1:47:43Speaker 49: That's funny.
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Donnie says, you're coming up on stage. I said, no, no, no.
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: I'm good. And he dragged me up at the end
- 1:47:50Speaker 3: of the finale when everybody's on stage. I'm dancing like
- 1:47:55Speaker 3: a fool up there, you know. So good. I'd rather
- 1:47:58Speaker 3: book him than do that.
- 1:47:59Speaker 49: That's so much better than playing drums for God's sake.
- 1:48:02Speaker 49: I would have died to see that one.
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: Well, you know, I think I told you my drum
- 1:48:06Speaker 3: set is the replica of the Beatles Ludwig set. And
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: I have it in my music room. And I asked
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: Ringo about it. And he said it was an accident.
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: He just walked by the music store and there it
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: was in the window. he said it could have been
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: pink and i said oh my he would have bought
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: it and i went wow so that was totally he
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: said absolutely he said nobody's ever asked me that so
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: you know i just you know a pinch me moment
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: for me i'm to meet one of the beatles and
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: to be friends with with one amazing yeah It's really
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: pretty cool. But you're no scam. You are the real deal.
- 1:48:43Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: You're such a great guy, and he's done so much
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: for so many, and I consider you, Sully, I have
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: a very few in the club. It's called the FFL Club,
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: Friends for Life, and you're one of them.
- 1:49:00Speaker 33: Thank you.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: Whether you want to be a card-carrying member or not,
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: you have no choice, but you know, God did bless
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: us to be together and come together. And I'm just
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: glad that you took the time to call in. I
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: know you're busy. You're on tour. I know how it
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: is when you're on tour. You're in a zone. I
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: watched you backstage. And you are totally in the zone
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: like an athlete getting ready to run out of the
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: tunnel and hit somebody, man. You're totally dedicated. So from
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: all of us, man, you know, Just thanks so much
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: for calling in and good luck with the rest of
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: the tour. Good luck ending it at my old home.
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: And if you ever need a drummer, I'm in the wings.
- 1:49:45Speaker 49: Yeah, no, I appreciate that. We're excited and I love
- 1:49:48Speaker 49: that we're ending this tour again at Mohegan because it
- 1:49:51Speaker 49: really is our favorite place to play in America. It's
- 1:49:54Speaker 49: just such a great venue. You did such a great
- 1:49:56Speaker 49: job building that place up and making it as artist-friendly.
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: As it is.
- 1:50:01Speaker 49: It's one of a kind. It's It's got an amazing
- 1:50:05Speaker 49: energy there. I don't know if it's because it's on
- 1:50:08Speaker 49: Native American healing grounds or what's going on there, but
- 1:50:11Speaker 49: it's certainly a very special venue and one of our
- 1:50:14Speaker 49: favorites to play in the whole world. So it's a
- 1:50:18Speaker 49: pleasure to end it at what I consider a home show.
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: I always told my team I wanted the venue to
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: be as popular as the stars who play it. And
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: when those two collide, it's something special. So... Have fun.
- 1:50:33Speaker 49: You certainly did that.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: Well, thank you. Have fun. Stay healthy. Love you, Sully.
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: See you soon.
- 1:50:39Speaker 33: Love you guys.
- 1:50:40Speaker 49: Thanks, Thomas. Appreciate you.

- 1:58:33Speaker 32: after he allegedly pointed a gun at someone and tried
- 1:58:36Speaker 32: to force his way into a Boswell Avenue apartment. Surveillance
- 1:58:41Speaker 32: footage and witness statements linked him to the incident. Firefighters
- 1:58:45Speaker 32: rescued a driver trapped inside a car submerged in a
- 1:58:48Speaker 32: brook on Montville Road in Norwich early Saturday morning. Crews
- 1:58:53Speaker 32: stabilized the vehicle and removed the driver's door before freeing
- 1:58:57Speaker 32: the occupant, who was transported to a hospital. Norwich police
- 1:59:01Speaker 32: arrested 68-year-old Joseph Dunyon after he allegedly grabbed and forcibly
- 1:59:07Speaker 32: kissed a 14-year-old girl at her school bus stop on
- 1:59:10Speaker 32: Boswell Avenue Friday. He faces charges including third-degree sexual assault
- 1:59:16Speaker 32: and risk of injury to a child. He was held
- 1:59:18Speaker 32: on $ 150, 000 bond that is due in.
- 1:59:21Speaker 7: Court October 13th.
- 1:59:23Speaker 32: Westerly is seeking up to $ 625, 000 in federal community development
- 1:59:27Speaker 32: block grant funding for four projects, including $ 375, 000 for Park
- 1:59:33Speaker 32: Avenue infrastructure improvements. A public hearing is scheduled for November
- 1:59:38Speaker 32: 2nd at 6 p.m.
- 1:59:40Speaker 13: At Town Hall. I'm Sean Murphy. When news breaks, we
- 1:59:44Speaker 13: break in.
- 1:59:54Speaker 6: If tomorrow all the things were gone, I'd work for
- 1:59:58Speaker 6: all my life.
- 2:00:00Speaker 3: Well, ladies and gentlemen, wow. Just hearing that voice, it
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: brings chills to me and 380, whatever it is, a
- 2:00:11Speaker 3: million Americans out there. I am so proud and blessed
- 2:00:15Speaker 3: to welcome to the show the best, Lee Greenwood. Lee,
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: thanks so much for being here today.
- 2:00:23Speaker 9: You're welcome, Tom. You know, sometimes my voice gets a
- 2:00:25Speaker 9: little scary around here. I talk to people that service
- 2:00:32Speaker 9: or maintain our pool and have the trash guy, and
- 2:00:36Speaker 9: when I walk out and shout at them, they're like,
- 2:00:38Speaker 9: stop shouting.
- 2:00:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want to lose your voice. Not now.
- 2:00:44Speaker 9: Yeah, my voice is good.
- 2:00:46Speaker 35: I'm good.
- 2:00:47Speaker 3: Well, talk about timing for today. I mean, you're right
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: on the heels of your phenomenal association and support and
- 2:00:58Speaker 3: care for September 11. How you have become connected and
- 2:01:04Speaker 3: a symbol of unity in our country is awesome. That
- 2:01:11Speaker 3: song that you wrote is, you know, the national anthem
- 2:01:14Speaker 3: of that day. And I've always said that 9-11 should
- 2:01:19Speaker 3: be a national day of remembrance. for not only the
- 2:01:23Speaker 3: people that died, but the people that are still suffering.
- 2:01:27Speaker 3: You know, every nine days, another person is dying from
- 2:01:32Speaker 3: that day, 25 years later. And so it's still here. And,
- 2:01:37Speaker 3: you know, you were just at Yankee Stadium to a
- 2:01:41Speaker 3: standing ovation when you sang the song. You were also
- 2:01:46Speaker 3: there in the beginning, 25 years ago at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:01:50Speaker 3: Your connection is historic. to the most horrific day in
- 2:01:55Speaker 3: our country to make us feel better as people. And
- 2:01:59Speaker 3: mission accomplished, Lee. I don't know how you feel about it,
- 2:02:03Speaker 3: but you've made everyone feel great.
- 2:02:06Speaker 9: When we turn the clock back and look at that
- 2:02:08Speaker 9: horrific event on 9-11-2001, when I was in Los Angeles,
- 2:02:14Speaker 9: my wife was in Nashville, and story after story of
- 2:02:18Speaker 9: people who went through that terrible day uh... of watching
- 2:02:23Speaker 9: this and the media coverage was really good big a
- 2:02:26Speaker 9: helicopter near uh... several of them and and people submitting
- 2:02:30Speaker 9: videos of the second plane hitting the second power and
- 2:02:33Speaker 9: of course then came from that uh... so many stories uh...
- 2:02:38Speaker 9: with it i mean if we don't want three thousand
- 2:02:41Speaker 9: american effect i think that's unbelievable and and the tears
- 2:02:45Speaker 9: the packwood uh... was well-planned they caught up you know
- 2:02:49Speaker 9: off-guard yep we had no idea that they would use
- 2:02:52Speaker 9: our own commercial aircraft against us.
- 2:02:55Speaker 3: Brilliant.
- 2:02:56Speaker 9: And because they couldn't carry guns, they were innovative enough
- 2:03:00Speaker 9: to find some weapon that could be deadly and fatal
- 2:03:05Speaker 9: to pilots in order to take.
- 2:03:07Speaker 33: Over an airplane.
- 2:03:10Speaker 9: It was a unprecedented attack on our society. And when
- 2:03:16Speaker 9: I went to sing back in 2001, it was very
- 2:03:19Speaker 9: important for me to.
- 2:03:22Speaker 9: To accomplish two things. Number one, I wanted to give
- 2:03:25Speaker 9: America all I could as just a normal citizen my
- 2:03:32Speaker 9: belief that we can stand tall and we can fight back.
- 2:03:37Speaker 9: Of course, President Bush, W, was in place at the time,
- 2:03:41Speaker 9: who afterwards stood on the steel and said, I don't
- 2:03:44Speaker 9: care where you are, what country you are, we will
- 2:03:46Speaker 9: find you and we will kill you. And I sang
- 2:03:49Speaker 9: the fourth game of the World Series that year as
- 2:03:51Speaker 9: well after the Fireman's Memorial and the Policeman's Memorial at
- 2:03:55Speaker 9: Carnegie Hall. But it was so vivid for me. And
- 2:04:00Speaker 9: my boys were six and three, so I constantly tell
- 2:04:03Speaker 9: them every anniversary of 9-11, this is the day you
- 2:04:08Speaker 9: need to make sure you research and find film of.
- 2:04:12Speaker 9: Remind yourself what this disaster meant to America. TSA was
- 2:04:17Speaker 9: not an agency before that. Our life changed when we
- 2:04:22Speaker 9: went to airport. Our freedoms were cut in half after
- 2:04:26Speaker 9: the attack. But singing there at Yankee Stadium again 25
- 2:04:31Speaker 9: years later at the same spot and be able to sing.
- 2:04:35Speaker 9: I'm 25 years older, but I'm still singing. And able
- 2:04:39Speaker 9: to give the crowd what they needed to hear. It
- 2:04:42Speaker 9: was a Yankees-Mets game. and the first one there, incompetent.
- 2:04:48Speaker 9: We love our sports, and I love being in sports events,
- 2:04:53Speaker 9: and I love anybody singing the national anthem. And, Tom,
- 2:04:55Speaker 9: I would never say God bless USA should be our
- 2:04:58Speaker 9: national anthem. When I look back at the history, and
- 2:05:01Speaker 9: that's what we always need to do is look back
- 2:05:03Speaker 9: at what we have and what we went through, our
- 2:05:06Speaker 9: battle at Fort McHenry, we were teetering on losing the
- 2:05:10Speaker 9: battle and had the French not stepped in and bombarded
- 2:05:15Speaker 9: the British, we might not have been able to take
- 2:05:17Speaker 9: the fort. But with Francis Scott Key sequestered on a
- 2:05:21Speaker 9: vessel out in the harbor where he could see the
- 2:05:24Speaker 9: events with the illumination of the rockets being blown up
- 2:05:28Speaker 9: over the top of the fort and to pin our
- 2:05:32Speaker 9: national anthem to it, a little British song. He wrote
- 2:05:34Speaker 9: a poem to a British melody. And yet we adopted
- 2:05:38Speaker 9: it years later and said, you know, this is so important.
- 2:05:41Speaker 9: We need to keep this as our anthem. And now,
- 2:05:44Speaker 9: as we look back on 9-11 and, of course, Pearl Harbor,
- 2:05:47Speaker 9: where my dad joined the Navy, those events are attacks
- 2:05:52Speaker 9: on our freedom, not just attacks on our soldiers.
- 2:05:57Speaker 3: Well, those 19 guys changed the world. They didn't need
- 2:06:01Speaker 3: an army. You're right. It was a brilliant plan pulled
- 2:06:06Speaker 3: off when we had our guard down, but we had
- 2:06:08Speaker 3: them in our sights. And that's the thing that frustrates me.
- 2:06:12Speaker 3: There's footage, and this one guy at the airport, the
- 2:06:15Speaker 3: secondary airport, they had Ada, whatever his name is, and
- 2:06:20Speaker 3: no one was sharing information. That's the thing we've learned now.
- 2:06:24Speaker 3: No agency was talking to each other. So we actually
- 2:06:27Speaker 3: knew these guys and let it happen. And that's the
- 2:06:31Speaker 3: most frustrating thing for me because, you know, all avoidable.
- 2:06:35Speaker 3: Could have been avoidable. And now, you know, We hope
- 2:06:40Speaker 3: to learn a lesson from it, but I think we
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: continue to have our guard down, and I worry about that.
- 2:06:46Speaker 3: But that moment didn't define us. What defined us is
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: how we reacted.
- 2:06:51Speaker 9: That's exactly right.
- 2:06:53Speaker 3: And what we did as Americans and how for a moment,
- 2:06:57Speaker 3: if it was only a moment, the world, they were
- 2:07:02Speaker 3: all Americans. Everyone on the planet was us. And George Bush,
- 2:07:06Speaker 3: I remember you just referred to him, you know, I
- 2:07:10Speaker 3: think we had everyone rooting for us, and we did.
- 2:07:14Speaker 3: We finally got our satisfaction and all of that. But,
- 2:07:18Speaker 3: you know, I'm friends with Yankees GM Brian Cashman. I'm
- 2:07:23Speaker 3: a Yankee fan, so I'm born and raised. But, you know,
- 2:07:26Speaker 3: they love you. And what you mean to the Yankees
- 2:07:31Speaker 3: and New York and everyone there from ground zero on
- 2:07:35Speaker 3: is a special– You have a special spot in everyone's heart, Lee,
- 2:07:40Speaker 3: you know, for what you have meant to everyone and
- 2:07:44Speaker 3: how you lifted up everybody at a time when we
- 2:07:47Speaker 3: need it to be lifted up. And, you know, how
- 2:07:50Speaker 3: did you write that song? Where did that come from?
- 2:07:54Speaker 3: How was it born?
- 2:07:55Speaker 9: I was raised in California on a simple farm, a
- 2:07:59Speaker 9: sharecropper's farm with my grandparents. I didn't know my parents
- 2:08:02Speaker 9: very well. My mother divorced my father because of military service.
- 2:08:06Speaker 9: And she was a musician. She actually worked in bars.
- 2:08:08Speaker 9: She was actually a comptometer operator for Standard Oil, which
- 2:08:11Speaker 9: is an early computer and adding machine. And so I
- 2:08:16Speaker 9: didn't really know either one of my parents. My grandparents, however...
- 2:08:20Speaker 9: gave me the opportunity to excel in baseball and music.
- 2:08:23Speaker 9: And I did both very well. And so I had
- 2:08:27Speaker 9: to make a choice in junior year in high school
- 2:08:30Speaker 9: if I was going to pursue baseball. And I was
- 2:08:33Speaker 9: just too small, you know, 140 pounds, 5'6. The odds
- 2:08:38Speaker 9: were against me to have a career. And I loved
- 2:08:42Speaker 9: what I did in music. I loved singing. It was
- 2:08:44Speaker 9: an inspiration for me. And I was a drum major
- 2:08:48Speaker 9: from a high school marching band in high school in
- 2:08:52Speaker 9: my senior year in Sacramento.
- 2:08:54Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 2:08:55Speaker 9: I loved marching in the parades. I'd march alongside the
- 2:08:58Speaker 9: military bands, whether it was the Army, the Marines, the Navy.
- 2:09:03Speaker 9: And I loved the pageantry. I loved the discipline of
- 2:09:05Speaker 9: the military. I would have been a great soldier, Tom. Unfortunately,
- 2:09:09Speaker 9: I didn't have the opportunity to serve. I had restrictions
- 2:09:11Speaker 9: on that. But it was my way later on. I
- 2:09:16Speaker 9: always look back at that. If I had a mirror
- 2:09:18Speaker 9: and I could have looked back in history and say,
- 2:09:21Speaker 9: why didn't I write this song then during Vietnam? It's
- 2:09:25Speaker 9: just too bad it didn't come to me, nor did
- 2:09:29Speaker 9: I have a platform to deliver it. It wasn't until
- 2:09:31Speaker 9: I got to Nashville, Tennessee that I had the platform
- 2:09:35Speaker 9: and the way to reach radio and reach public. uh...
- 2:09:40Speaker 9: and after my first i had five album before i
- 2:09:43Speaker 9: wrote god bless u.s.a. so it wasn't it wasn't something
- 2:09:46Speaker 9: that started my career it was right in the middle
- 2:09:49Speaker 9: of it and and when it happened it was uh...
- 2:09:52Speaker 9: it was a signature uh... to me at the point
- 2:09:55Speaker 9: where i acknowledged what i felt as an american not
- 2:09:58Speaker 9: just as a kid from california uh... i happen to
- 2:10:01Speaker 9: be white i was born here i i'm not entitled
- 2:10:05Speaker 9: but uh... but I was grateful to be born in
- 2:10:09Speaker 9: this free country. And now, people who come here as citizens,
- 2:10:14Speaker 9: they will hear God Bless USA in the immigration film.
- 2:10:16Speaker 9: I don't know if you know that.
- 2:10:17Speaker 3: Oh, I did not know that.
- 2:10:18Speaker 9: But Janet Panatello, years ago, I guess 25 years ago,
- 2:10:22Speaker 9: asked if we could use it in the film that
- 2:10:24Speaker 9: welcomes new immigrants. And I said, yes, you can, until
- 2:10:27Speaker 9: I die, and then it's up to my wife. But
- 2:10:31Speaker 9: they hear the president's speech, the national anthem, God Bless USA,
- 2:10:34Speaker 9: they take the oath to the country. and surrender a
- 2:10:36Speaker 9: flag where they come from, no matter what country it is.
- 2:10:39Speaker 9: And I can't tell you how proud an immigrant who
- 2:10:43Speaker 9: comes to the United States for the right reasons, not
- 2:10:46Speaker 9: an illegal, but not necessarily assimilate like they did when
- 2:10:51Speaker 9: they came through Ellis Island years ago. And they will
- 2:10:54Speaker 9: bring their culture. But this time, when immigrants come here
- 2:10:57Speaker 9: legally and they wait seven years for that nod from
- 2:11:01Speaker 9: the immigration department to say, I am a citizen, you
- 2:11:04Speaker 9: can't I can't tell you how proud they are and
- 2:11:07Speaker 9: how grateful.
- 2:11:08Speaker 33: And they look at me and they go like, you're like.
- 2:11:10Speaker 9: The poster kid for American citizenship. And I'm like, no,
- 2:11:14Speaker 9: I'm just a simple farmer from California who believes in freedom.
- 2:11:18Speaker 3: What a story. You know, my grandfather came here from
- 2:11:21Speaker 3: Italy and he wanted to be, I grew up with him.
- 2:11:25Speaker 3: He lived with us back in the day, you know,
- 2:11:28Speaker 3: the grandparents lived with you. And I learned a lot
- 2:11:30Speaker 3: from him. And he was in the Italian army, played
- 2:11:33Speaker 3: the clarinet in the Italian band.
- 2:11:36Speaker 30: Wow.
- 2:11:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and he wanted to be an American. And he
- 2:11:41Speaker 3: said to me one day, I'm not an Italian-American. I said,
- 2:11:44Speaker 3: what do you mean? He says, I'm an American now. And,
- 2:11:47Speaker 3: you know, I grew up with that accent in the
- 2:11:49Speaker 3: house all the time. And one of my regrets is
- 2:11:51Speaker 3: I never really– and I had a ringside seat to
- 2:11:54Speaker 3: learning a second language. But back then, they didn't want
- 2:11:58Speaker 3: you to be ethnic. And it's a shame because I
- 2:12:01Speaker 3: wish I would have picked up on– the Italian language
- 2:12:05Speaker 3: more than I did. Um, but I remember him saying that,
- 2:12:10Speaker 3: you know, and then later I read, you know, there's
- 2:12:11Speaker 3: no hyphenation. And when we get rid of the hyphenations
- 2:12:14Speaker 3: in this country, we'll all be one. And, you know,
- 2:12:17Speaker 3: that's the whole thing. I mean, we're, you're proud of
- 2:12:20Speaker 3: your background and all of that, but you came here
- 2:12:22Speaker 3: for a reason, you know, and I, I think that's
- 2:12:26Speaker 3: the way it should be, you know, but, but I
- 2:12:29Speaker 3: heard something about you, uh, that I didn't know. And
- 2:12:32Speaker 3: then I heard before, uh, You know, you, yeah, and I,
- 2:12:37Speaker 3: by the way, you've won a Grammy. I think you've,
- 2:12:39Speaker 3: I don't know how many hit singles you've had, 30-some
- 2:12:41Speaker 3: or whatever. You used to be the most sought-after saxophone
- 2:12:45Speaker 3: player in Vegas.
- 2:12:48Speaker 9: That's correct. As a matter of fact, I learned to
- 2:12:50Speaker 9: play saxophone before I learned to play piano, which was
- 2:12:54Speaker 9: my mother's instrument. She actually played piano and mandolin. And
- 2:13:00Speaker 9: my grandfather wasn't my real grandfather. Their name was Jackson Jackson.
- 2:13:03Speaker 9: I don't know anything about my Greenwood grandfather.
- 2:13:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:13:08Speaker 33: And that's interesting.
- 2:13:08Speaker 9: But my grandfather, Jackson, had a brother named Claude. Tommy
- 2:13:17Speaker 9: and Claude were brothers, and he played saxophone early on.
- 2:13:21Speaker 9: And a matter of fact, he still had the saxophone
- 2:13:23Speaker 9: that he played when he was younger, and he gave
- 2:13:25Speaker 9: it to me. And when I started playing saxophone, it
- 2:13:29Speaker 9: was like a duck to water.
- 2:13:30Speaker 33: Wow.
- 2:13:31Speaker 9: I just... It was so instantly easy. I even went
- 2:13:36Speaker 9: to the baseball park instead of playing saxophone when they
- 2:13:40Speaker 9: wanted me to take lessons. And I still got better
- 2:13:44Speaker 9: playing sax, and they never knew that I didn't take lessons. But, yeah,
- 2:13:47Speaker 9: in Sacramento, before I left, I was playing two and
- 2:13:50Speaker 9: three nights a week with rock bands.
- 2:13:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:13:53Speaker 9: In that era, in the 1950s. And then when I
- 2:13:57Speaker 9: got to Vegas, I made an awful lot of money
- 2:13:59Speaker 9: with the bands because I would... arrange the music for
- 2:14:03Speaker 9: a review that may last six, eight months, and then
- 2:14:06Speaker 9: I would be part of the horn section as well
- 2:14:08Speaker 9: as the singers. So it was a dual way I
- 2:14:13Speaker 9: could make money, and I was pretty good at it.
- 2:14:18Speaker 3: Do you play saxophone in your show?
- 2:14:21Speaker 33: I do.
- 2:14:22Speaker 3: Oh, my God. That's fantastic. That is fantastic. See, you know,
- 2:14:28Speaker 3: people out there, you know, you're learning something here today, guys,
- 2:14:31Speaker 3: you know, about Lee Greenwood. And that's the thing about
- 2:14:35Speaker 3: most entertainers. You know, our common friend, Tony Orlando, you know,
- 2:14:39Speaker 3: he's just the most decent human being I've ever met.
- 2:14:43Speaker 33: Oh, my gosh.
- 2:14:45Speaker 9: I love him so much.
- 2:14:46Speaker 3: And I was blessed to produce his final show, his finale.
- 2:14:51Speaker 3: And it was like live television. You were part of it.
- 2:14:54Speaker 3: And you were fantastic, and everybody came out for him. And,
- 2:14:59Speaker 3: you know, but the icing on the cake was Lee Greenwood. And,
- 2:15:03Speaker 3: you know, I just wanted to thank you for that.
- 2:15:05Speaker 3: And Tony obviously loves you.
- 2:15:07Speaker 9: Well, I was just in New York, and we did
- 2:15:10Speaker 9: an event for WABC Radio, which are wonderful conservative friends
- 2:15:15Speaker 9: and one of the most powerful radio stations in the country, 100,000 watts.
- 2:15:20Speaker 9: And Tony and I were both at the event with
- 2:15:23Speaker 9: Joe Piscopo and a couple other singers there. And it
- 2:15:26Speaker 9: was a birthday for John. And so it was a
- 2:15:33Speaker 9: wonderful celebration. I have a great picture with me and
- 2:15:36Speaker 9: Tony and Joe backstage. And Orlando just looked terrific. And
- 2:15:42Speaker 9: he's just the most loving man, loving heart. And I
- 2:15:45Speaker 9: have no trouble saying I love you to him because...
- 2:15:49Speaker 9: He is definitely, I may not be Italian, but I
- 2:15:52Speaker 9: will tell you this. When my mother remarried, she married
- 2:15:55Speaker 9: an Italian. His name was Louis D'Antonoli.
- 2:16:01Speaker 3: That's Italian for you.
- 2:16:03Speaker 9: Salvatore and Pasquale built motels in Disneyland while I was
- 2:16:07Speaker 9: a freshman in high school. So I spent a year
- 2:16:09Speaker 9: in Anaheim. And I loved him dearly. He was a
- 2:16:15Speaker 9: terrific guy. He treated me well. and took over his
- 2:16:19Speaker 9: role as my stepfather when my mother couldn't be there.
- 2:16:23Speaker 3: Well, you both have legacy songs. His is Tie a
- 2:16:27Speaker 3: Yellow Ribbon, which has meaning around the world all the
- 2:16:31Speaker 3: time for historic events from the hostages to bringing people home.
- 2:16:38Speaker 3: That's Tony. And then yours with God Bless the USA.
- 2:16:44Speaker 3: Those will live on forever.
- 2:16:46Speaker 9: Yeah, it tied Tony and I together years ago. Of course,
- 2:16:50Speaker 9: he was a big star long before I ever got
- 2:16:54Speaker 9: any kind of fame. And I was grateful that he
- 2:16:58Speaker 9: embraced me as a friend. And musically, we were tied
- 2:17:02Speaker 9: together with songs that were inspirational for America because we
- 2:17:05Speaker 9: both believed in the same thing.
- 2:17:07Speaker 3: Yeah, no, he's wonderful and what he does for our
- 2:17:09Speaker 3: veterans and all of that. We've been friends since the
- 2:17:12Speaker 3: Atlantic City days, I don't know, 34 years now. And
- 2:17:16Speaker 3: he's part of the FFL Club, Friends for Life, which
- 2:17:18Speaker 3: I consider you a member now and appreciate you very much.
- 2:17:22Speaker 3: And from what I understand, again, in the news, I
- 2:17:26Speaker 3: heard President Trump nominated your wife for an ambassador. I
- 2:17:31Speaker 3: think I read that. Yes.
- 2:17:33Speaker 9: So ambassador to Barbados. And she's well deserving of this.
- 2:17:39Speaker 9: She ran her own company, her own business for 30 years.
- 2:17:43Speaker 9: and worked for Donald Trump when he owned Miss Universe.
- 2:17:46Speaker 9: And so that was part of how we became associated
- 2:17:49Speaker 9: with the president. And then, of course, he began to
- 2:17:53Speaker 9: use my song to have him come on stage. And
- 2:17:56Speaker 9: then he asked me if I would do it in person.
- 2:17:59Speaker 9: And I said, absolutely, sir. And so I've been very
- 2:18:02Speaker 9: blessed to have that kind of association with the ruler
- 2:18:04Speaker 9: of the free world.
- 2:18:05Speaker 3: Well, I'm blessed. We're both on a first-name basis with
- 2:18:10Speaker 3: the President of the United States. I used to work
- 2:18:12Speaker 3: for him back in the day. So I know who
- 2:18:16Speaker 3: he's like, and we all, you know, made our contributions.
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: But I got to tell you, I appreciate you being
- 2:18:22Speaker 3: on the show. We're running out of time a little bit,
- 2:18:24Speaker 3: but it went so fast. But, Lee, you're a legend.
- 2:18:28Speaker 3: You're a great American. And all I can tell you is,
- 2:18:32Speaker 3: you know— God bless the USA and Lee Greenwood. Thanks
- 2:18:36Speaker 3: so much.
- 2:18:37Speaker 33: Thanks, Tom.
- 2:18:38Speaker 9: We love you, and thanks for having me on your show.
- 2:18:41Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 2:18:51Speaker 6: If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd work for
- 2:18:56Speaker 6: all my life And I had to start again Just
- 2:19:02Speaker 6: my children and my wife Thank my lucky stars To

- 2:26:16Speaker 33: Oh, hey, Tom.
- 2:26:19Speaker 3: Perfect, man. How was your wake-up call today?
- 2:26:23Speaker 35: Oh, it was okay.
- 2:26:24Speaker 2: No problem.
- 2:26:26Speaker 7: No, I'm it.

- 2:26:29Speaker 3: Thank you, man.
- 2:26:30Speaker 2: I was actually up a little earlier.
- 2:26:32Speaker 3: Well, that's what you told me. You said you go
- 2:26:34Speaker 3: to the gym early and you're ready to rock.
- 2:26:36Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 2:26:37Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 2:26:38Speaker 53: I do.
- 2:26:38Speaker 34: Okay.
- 2:26:38Speaker 33: I try to get it out of the way.
- 2:26:41Speaker 3: All right, man. Well, for the listening audience out there,
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: Frank Stallone is an incredible talent. And, of course, you know,
- 2:26:52Speaker 3: part of the Stallone team who's done so much. And
- 2:26:56Speaker 3: this is the, I'm sure you're going to talk about it,
- 2:26:59Speaker 3: this 50th anniversary of Rocky, which you were part of
- 2:27:03Speaker 3: as well. You were part of. Rambo, First Blood, too.
- 2:27:07Speaker 3: You've written songs. You've been Grammy nominated. Golden Globes for
- 2:27:14Speaker 3: Staying Alive. Far From Over, one of my best tunes.
- 2:27:18Speaker 3: You've done it all, Frank. And, you know, your career
- 2:27:23Speaker 3: keeps going. And for those of you who don't know,
- 2:27:25Speaker 3: Frank and I, you know, really got together. We're two
- 2:27:28Speaker 3: Pennsylvania boys. And he's from Philly. I'm from Harrisburg. And
- 2:27:33Speaker 3: I was happy to actually, I don't know if you noticed, Frank,
- 2:27:36Speaker 3: but residencies are real popular now in Vegas. Everyone's doing
- 2:27:41Speaker 3: a residency, blah, blah, blah. You were the first. Because
- 2:27:45Speaker 3: we did a Frank Stallone residency in Atlantic City at
- 2:27:50Speaker 3: the Trump Castle. And you were knocking it out in
- 2:27:53Speaker 3: the park every night. At Viva's Lounge. Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 2:27:59Speaker 2: It was actually very... Really, it was a lot of
- 2:28:01Speaker 2: fun because it was kind of like a Vegas nightclub setting,
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: almost like the famous Louis Prima. I think it held
- 2:28:11Speaker 2: maybe 300 people, and it was very cozy, and it
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: was very... I don't know. Things like that are very
- 2:28:19Speaker 2: good for an entertainer when you're starting out. Of course,
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: by that time, I'd been doing it a long.
- 2:28:24Speaker 33: Time, but.
- 2:28:25Speaker 2: You know, you learn to interact with audiences, and, you know,
- 2:28:31Speaker 2: in a lot of younger acts that come up, all
- 2:28:34Speaker 2: of a sudden, you know, they're on Star Search or
- 2:28:37Speaker 2: The Voice or something like that, and overnight they're tossed
- 2:28:40Speaker 2: into the limelight of big arenas, and they really have
- 2:28:46Speaker 2: no experience in working with a close audience so a
- 2:28:51Speaker 2: lot of them are just like hey it's great to
- 2:28:55Speaker 2: be here yeah yeah man but they don't really have
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: any rap you know what i mean at all because
- 2:29:01Speaker 2: it's just they're playing to like 20 000 people so
- 2:29:04Speaker 2: it's hard to be intimate and it's a good training
- 2:29:07Speaker 2: ground actually.
- 2:29:09Speaker 3: Well you broke the ground yeah you broke the ground
- 2:29:11Speaker 3: it was it was a it was a fun run
- 2:29:13Speaker 3: in fact i remember A month, yeah. Yeah. And, again,
- 2:29:18Speaker 3: nobody was doing it. We came up with the idea.
- 2:29:21Speaker 3: Is that true, really?
- 2:29:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:29:24Speaker 3: And I remember I was doing all three Trump properties,
- 2:29:28Speaker 3: the Plaza, Trump Plaza.
- 2:29:30Speaker 2: You had Clint.
- 2:29:31Speaker 3: Marina and Taj Mahal. And so when we were opening
- 2:29:36Speaker 3: the Taj Mahal that night, you probably don't know, I
- 2:29:39Speaker 3: think I may have mentioned years ago, we opened with
- 2:29:42Speaker 3: Elton John. And Elton John was our headliner. So we're backstage,
- 2:29:46Speaker 3: and there's Elton, and there's Sly, and there's a bunch
- 2:29:50Speaker 3: of celebrities and blah, blah, blah. And everyone's all bragging about,
- 2:29:53Speaker 3: you know, the show with Elton and this and that.
- 2:29:56Speaker 3: And I said, you know, you guys really got to
- 2:29:59Speaker 3: go see Frank Stallone, who's over at the Trump Castle,
- 2:30:03Speaker 3: who's killing it every night. You know, basically that was
- 2:30:07Speaker 3: my way of saying, this is nice, but you got
- 2:30:09Speaker 3: to go over there and see Frank.
- 2:30:11Speaker 2: I remember... watching the opening of the Taj Mahal from
- 2:30:19Speaker 2: Trump Castle, but I couldn't go because I was working
- 2:30:22Speaker 2: that night. But I saw all the, you know, very
- 2:30:26Speaker 2: famous people showing up in, you know, limos and stuff
- 2:30:29Speaker 2: for the opening of the Taj. But, you know, I
- 2:30:33Speaker 2: never went. I never went to the Taj. It was
- 2:30:37Speaker 2: a big deal then. I mean, it was like the
- 2:30:40Speaker 2: premier casino at that time. You know, bigger than anything
- 2:30:44Speaker 2: in Vegas.
- 2:30:45Speaker 3: Oh, no. It was the grand opening. Who would have
- 2:30:49Speaker 3: thought that, you know, we'd be on a first-name basis
- 2:30:51Speaker 3: with the president of the United States years later?
- 2:30:53Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:30:54Speaker 28: Yeah, right.
- 2:30:55Speaker 2: You'd see him, like, walking around the Trump Castle or
- 2:31:00Speaker 2: the Sands, I mean, or Trump Plaza.
- 2:31:03Speaker 53: Yeah.
- 2:31:03Speaker 2: Whoever thought he'd be the future president of the United States.
- 2:31:07Speaker 2: Pretty amazing.
- 2:31:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31:08Speaker 35: Oh, wow.
- 2:31:09Speaker 3: I spent a lot of time with him.
- 2:31:11Speaker 2: I know you did.
- 2:31:12Speaker 3: Anyway. You know, people ask all the time, what's he
- 2:31:14Speaker 3: really like? Well, you're seeing it, you know.
- 2:31:17Speaker 2: It's just like, you know, I was in the White
- 2:31:20Speaker 2: House in the last December, so for the Kennedy Center Honors.
- 2:31:29Speaker 3: That's right.
- 2:31:29Speaker 2: And so it's really strange, you know, from the lobby
- 2:31:33Speaker 2: in Trump Castle to the Oval Office. And he's exactly
- 2:31:38Speaker 2: the same.
- 2:31:40Speaker 32: Yeah.
- 2:31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they always do ask, what is the president like?
- 2:31:42Speaker 2: I said, well, you see it.
- 2:31:44Speaker 5: That's him.
- 2:31:45Speaker 3: 100%. What was that like? What was that like, the
- 2:31:48Speaker 3: Kennedy thing?
- 2:31:49Speaker 2: Well, it was, I mean, it's always an honor to play,
- 2:31:56Speaker 2: you know, for the president of the United States, the
- 2:31:58Speaker 2: vice president, the whole cabinet. And then there was also
- 2:32:03Speaker 2: being honored was Kiss, George Strait, Michael Crawford. You know,
- 2:32:08Speaker 2: it was a big deal for me to be asked
- 2:32:12Speaker 2: to do it and then sing Take You Back from
- 2:32:16Speaker 2: the song I sang on the street corner in Rocky
- 2:32:19Speaker 2: and then give a little speech to my brother. So
- 2:32:21Speaker 2: it was quite emotional considering where I came from and
- 2:32:27Speaker 2: where I ended up at that point. And now it's
- 2:32:32Speaker 2: almost hard to believe that It's, well, over 50 years
- 2:32:37Speaker 2: ago when I was standing on that street corner in
- 2:32:42Speaker 2: Philadelphia singing Take You Back and then going back to
- 2:32:45Speaker 2: my $ 80 a month apartment in Trenton and I think
- 2:32:49Speaker 2: playing a gig, you know, the next day and then
- 2:32:53Speaker 2: a year later the movie comes out and it's nominated
- 2:32:56Speaker 2: for 10 Academy Awards and here we are 50 years
- 2:33:00Speaker 2: later with a movie coming out I Play Rocky of
- 2:33:06Speaker 2: someone playing my brother trying to get Rocky made. It's just,
- 2:33:10Speaker 2: you know, it's a very interesting month. You have the
- 2:33:13Speaker 2: 50th anniversary. You have the movie I Play Rocky. My
- 2:33:17Speaker 2: brother's book, The Step, is now the number one selling
- 2:33:20Speaker 2: book in the world. And this week, his series, Tulsa King,
- 2:33:27Speaker 2: premieres the fourth season, which is the number one streaming
- 2:33:31Speaker 2: show in the world. I said, that's pretty good. You're
- 2:33:34Speaker 2: 80 years old. I said, you should actually be in
- 2:33:36Speaker 2: the motion picture home at this time. But he's now,
- 2:33:40Speaker 2: it's just, it's amazing how things of quality stick around. And,
- 2:33:46Speaker 2: you know, you have a statue of yourself on the
- 2:33:50Speaker 2: art museum. So it's pretty interesting considering where you started
- 2:33:56Speaker 2: A and then where you end up, you know.
- 2:33:59Speaker 18: It's pretty wild.
- 2:34:00Speaker 3: Other than all that, how's it going?
- 2:34:03Speaker 2: Yeah, other than that, it's all going pretty well. You know,
- 2:34:05Speaker 2: I'm doing, you know, I have an interesting career because,
- 2:34:10Speaker 2: as you know, I started in music and I've done,
- 2:34:14Speaker 2: I think, 105 movies or something. So when the movie
- 2:34:20Speaker 2: business is bad, then I'm playing music or vice versa.
- 2:34:25Speaker 2: You know, or if the music business is bad, which
- 2:34:28Speaker 2: it is right now, I'm doing more movies. So I'm
- 2:34:31Speaker 2: kind of, less than that situation, you know?
- 2:34:35Speaker 3: Well, you know, you touched on it. The dues that
- 2:34:38Speaker 3: you paid, you know, running to gigs here and there,
- 2:34:42Speaker 3: packing up and going to places and going back to
- 2:34:45Speaker 3: your apartment where, you know, you had a pit stop and,
- 2:34:49Speaker 3: you know, you're not living in the Taj Mahal.
- 2:34:52Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no. I was far from the Taj Mahal.
- 2:34:57Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:34:57Speaker 2: It was a pretty rough neighborhood in Trenton, New Jersey. But,
- 2:35:01Speaker 2: you know... When you're younger like that, Tom, you have,
- 2:35:05Speaker 2: you know, I was like 24 years old. So when
- 2:35:08Speaker 2: you're young, you have a lot more resiliency because you
- 2:35:11Speaker 2: have a lot more highway in front of you, you know.
- 2:35:14Speaker 2: And when you're 24, you figure, well, I can afford
- 2:35:18Speaker 2: some bumps in the road. I have, you know, 60
- 2:35:21Speaker 2: more years ahead of me, you know. Now you go, okay,
- 2:35:26Speaker 2: what do I have, a few more days, you know.
- 2:35:31Speaker 2: a month ahead of me or something like that.
- 2:35:33Speaker 3: Well, we all have an expiration date.
- 2:35:35Speaker 2: We do have an expiration date.
- 2:35:37Speaker 3: I remember.
- 2:35:40Speaker 2: When you were running the Sands, and I went back
- 2:35:45Speaker 2: to play. I think it was opening for Don Rickles
- 2:35:48Speaker 2: at Bally's. It was his 50th showbiz anniversary. And Atlantic City,
- 2:35:55Speaker 2: it's not.
- 2:35:57Speaker 2: What it was like when you were there. I mean,
- 2:36:00Speaker 2: the Sands was a premier hotel. I mean, you know,
- 2:36:03Speaker 2: I remember I played there and the Copa room, which
- 2:36:06Speaker 2: you set up, which was, you know, facsimile to the,
- 2:36:11Speaker 2: to Viva's lounge. It was, there was a lot of
- 2:36:15Speaker 2: action going on in Lancet City at that time. And
- 2:36:18Speaker 2: I just played there about the two and a half
- 2:36:20Speaker 2: years ago at the, Which, the old Taj Mahal, which
- 2:36:25Speaker 2: is now the Hard Rock, which, by the way, Ed Tracy,
- 2:36:29Speaker 2: who was President Trump's right-hand man, he's involved in. So
- 2:36:35Speaker 2: it's just, it's amazing how it goes full circle. You know,
- 2:36:38Speaker 2: and then you were at Mohegan Sun, and before Mohegan Sun,
- 2:36:42Speaker 2: you were, what was the other hotel you were at?
- 2:36:44Speaker 3: Foxwoods.
- 2:36:46Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 2:36:46Speaker 3: Foxwoods, yeah.
- 2:36:47Speaker 2: I mean, so, it's amazing how.
- 2:36:51Speaker 33: Long.
- 2:36:52Speaker 2: The friendships and the communications, like, last over those years. So,
- 2:36:57Speaker 2: I mean, I've known you since the mid-' 80s, early-' 80s.
- 2:37:04Speaker 3: You've known me since the chicken salad days at the deli.
- 2:37:07Speaker 33: That's right.
- 2:37:08Speaker 2: You ate the same thing. It was almost like Pavlovian.
- 2:37:14Speaker 2: French fries and chicken salad.
- 2:37:16Speaker 3: That's still my diet, Mo. I mean, I work out
- 2:37:19Speaker 3: and all that, but I got to have my fries,
- 2:37:21Speaker 3: my burgers, my pizza. I don't believe in, you know,
- 2:37:25Speaker 3: watching all that stuff. I don't, I just don't do it.
- 2:37:28Speaker 3: I just don't do it. You know, like you.
- 2:37:30Speaker 2: Said, it was amazing. You never drank, never smoked, no,
- 2:37:34Speaker 2: but a French fries and chicken salad. And you're still here.
- 2:37:37Speaker 3: People think I'm a freak. I'm a freak. I, I,
- 2:37:40Speaker 3: like you said, I never had a cup.
- 2:37:41Speaker 2: You never put on any weight.
- 2:37:44Speaker 3: I never had a cup of coffee in my life.
- 2:37:47Speaker 2: I never had a cup of coffee.
- 2:37:49Speaker 3: Never. I never had a cup of coffee.
- 2:37:52Speaker 2: And to be in that business, the casino, and then
- 2:37:58Speaker 2: you were at Hershey Park, it's quite rare.
- 2:38:03Speaker 3: People said, well, I'm a chocoholic because of Hershey.
- 2:38:07Speaker 2: And on top of it, you're a chocoholic.
- 2:38:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I used to get it free. It
- 2:38:11Speaker 3: pains me now I have to pay for it. And
- 2:38:14Speaker 3: I only eat Hershey bars anyway.
- 2:38:17Speaker 2: I know. But you know what? I've got to tell you,
- 2:38:20Speaker 2: it was a glorious time. I mean, when I had Vivas,
- 2:38:24Speaker 2: all these people would show up. All these artists, like,
- 2:38:28Speaker 2: you know, Rossi, Steve Rossi, and, you know, Billy Eckstein.
- 2:38:34Speaker 2: You know, all these, like, kind of vaudevillian acts would,
- 2:38:39Speaker 2: you know, do a few shows there. I remember you
- 2:38:42Speaker 2: sent a car. to pick up sammy conant for their
- 2:38:46Speaker 2: audience out there sammy kahn was nominated for thirteen academy
- 2:38:49Speaker 2: awards as a songwriter and he came divya's lounge he
- 2:38:55Speaker 2: was probably one of the most celebrated uh... songwriters in
- 2:38:59Speaker 2: the musical history and he wrote all those hits for
- 2:39:02Speaker 2: frank sinatra and everything like that and uh... we we
- 2:39:06Speaker 2: just have a lot of people drop in there was
- 2:39:09Speaker 2: a very interesting to you at the uh... trump castle Again,
- 2:39:15Speaker 2: when I played in Atlantic City, I was walking around.
- 2:39:18Speaker 2: All those things, they're just gone.
- 2:39:21Speaker 3: It's a different time now. We were there during the
- 2:39:25Speaker 3: boom years when it was just Vegas and Atlantic City.
- 2:39:29Speaker 3: That was it. There was no Connecticut. There was no, well,
- 2:39:33Speaker 3: it's in 40-some states now.
- 2:39:34Speaker 2: There were no Indian casinos.
- 2:39:36Speaker 9: No, nothing.
- 2:39:36Speaker 28: Nothing.
- 2:39:37Speaker 3: And, you know, you're right. The Sands was the place
- 2:39:40Speaker 3: to be. We were the hip joint. You know, we
- 2:39:42Speaker 3: broke it open with Eddie Murphy and Linda Ronstadt.
- 2:39:45Speaker 2: Oh, everyone played there.
- 2:39:46Speaker 3: Yeah. Robin Williams, Sinatra.
- 2:39:47Speaker 2: Didn't Sinatra play there?
- 2:39:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:39:50Speaker 30: Yeah.
- 2:39:50Speaker 3: In fact, this famous story is when Frank was in
- 2:39:52Speaker 3: the Copa room. It was at the end of his career.
- 2:39:55Speaker 3: And Frank, you know, lost his way. He didn't. He
- 2:40:00Speaker 3: had a teleprompter and the band was playing the orchestra
- 2:40:04Speaker 3: and he stopped singing and he didn't know where he was. Well,
- 2:40:07Speaker 3: there's a.
- 2:40:08Speaker 2: Few acts out there doing that now.
- 2:40:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:40:12Speaker 2: I don't know where they are.
- 2:40:13Speaker 3: No.
- 2:40:13Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 2:40:14Speaker 3: Because, you know, I guess they still need the money
- 2:40:17Speaker 3: or whatever, but Frank couldn't find his spot. And I'll
- 2:40:21Speaker 3: remember this like it was yesterday. After an uncomfortable, literal
- 2:40:26Speaker 3: a minute or two, which can last a long time,
- 2:40:30Speaker 3: people's standing ovation, standing ovation to let him know that
- 2:40:35Speaker 3: it was okay.
- 2:40:35Speaker 39: Yeah.
- 2:40:37Speaker 2: I remember the first time I saw Frank was at
- 2:40:42Speaker 2: Caesars Palace in Vegas. I'd just moved from Trenton, New Jersey,
- 2:40:47Speaker 2: and my brother and I were dating at the time.
- 2:40:50Speaker 2: I think it was 1980, because it was right before
- 2:40:54Speaker 2: we started Rocky III. And Cliff Perlman, who was a
- 2:40:57Speaker 2: friend of Sly's and mine, he and his brother bought
- 2:41:01Speaker 2: Caesars Palace back then. And so, I mean, it was
- 2:41:04Speaker 2: amazing things. sitting in a booth, close up, seeing Frank
- 2:41:08Speaker 2: Sinatra for the first time, walking on stage. And this
- 2:41:12Speaker 2: was when he was, you know.
- 2:41:13Speaker 5: Still on it.
- 2:41:16Speaker 2: And it was... There's only a few people I've met
- 2:41:18Speaker 2: in my life that I was a little tongue-tied. One
- 2:41:23Speaker 2: was definitely... Maybe the only one was Frank Sinatra. Because,
- 2:41:28Speaker 2: you know, it's a face you've seen your whole life.
- 2:41:31Speaker 5: Oh, I know.
- 2:41:32Speaker 3: Well, I was one of the lucky ones because... to
- 2:41:35Speaker 3: have dinner with him one night. And like a kid,
- 2:41:38Speaker 3: I kept my, you know, I just listened. You know,
- 2:41:41Speaker 3: I'm taking it all in. Jilly was there, all the
- 2:41:44Speaker 3: people you read about.
- 2:41:45Speaker 2: Oh, Jilly was.
- 2:41:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and he had his crew. He had his crew there.
- 2:41:50Speaker 2: I know it well. You know, he invited me to
- 2:41:53Speaker 2: Trader Vic's. It was after Sammy died, man. And Nancy
- 2:42:00Speaker 2: Sinatra said, you know, Dad, we're going to go out
- 2:42:02Speaker 2: to dinner tonight. You know, Dad's a little. down because,
- 2:42:05Speaker 2: you know, Sammy died, Dean died. There was just a whole,
- 2:42:09Speaker 2: you know, like his whole crew, Jilly, they're all gone,
- 2:42:12Speaker 2: you know, at that point. So I went to Trader
- 2:42:15Speaker 2: Vic's and it was amazing. And it's really true. He
- 2:42:18Speaker 2: was never late. He said, when you're on time, you're late.
- 2:42:22Speaker 2: And so I come in there, there's a long table.
- 2:42:26Speaker 2: And at the end, I walk in, there's Frank Sinatra
- 2:42:29Speaker 2: with his bottle of Jack Daniels, his gold Dunhill letter.
- 2:42:33Speaker 2: his pack of Camelman filters, a big glass of ice,
- 2:42:37Speaker 2: and he's, like, holding court. And the funny thing was,
- 2:42:41Speaker 2: I just bought a Bronco, a big truck Bronco, and
- 2:42:46Speaker 2: at the end, you know, he drank a little bit,
- 2:42:48Speaker 2: but at the end, everyone else had kind of passed out,
- 2:42:51Speaker 2: and I'm still, like, talking. He said, I swear to God,
- 2:42:54Speaker 2: he said, Frank, come on, let's go hit some joints. Now,
- 2:42:57Speaker 2: if anybody knows in California, everything closes at, like, 10 o'clock,
- 2:43:02Speaker 2: So it's like 10.30, and Frank's trying to climb into
- 2:43:07Speaker 2: my Bronco. He wanted to go hit the town.
- 2:43:10Speaker 8: That wasn't Frank.
- 2:43:11Speaker 3: That was OJ.
- 2:43:12Speaker 2: Everything of his era has been gone for like 30 years.
- 2:43:16Speaker 2: So he's trying to climb into my Bronco, and Frank Jr. said, no, Dad,
- 2:43:20Speaker 2: we've got to go home. He goes, come on, I
- 2:43:22Speaker 2: want to hit the joints with Cheech. For you people
- 2:43:24Speaker 2: out there, that's a slang name for Frank. And that
- 2:43:28Speaker 2: would have been a quite interesting.
- 2:43:30Speaker 48: Evening, wouldn't it?
- 2:43:30Speaker 3: Well, you had a ringside and still do. We both
- 2:43:34Speaker 3: have had a ringside seat to American pop culture that
- 2:43:37Speaker 3: will never come again, Frank. No. And what you have
- 2:43:41Speaker 3: done and contributed to that pop culture is second to none.
- 2:43:46Speaker 3: You're part of what I said earlier on the show.
- 2:43:48Speaker 3: I have a very limited club. It's called the FFL Club,
- 2:43:52Speaker 3: Friends for Life. You're one of them. You're one of them.
- 2:43:55Speaker 2: Well, I feel, you know, and I'm going to dig
- 2:43:58Speaker 2: into your book now. This week, I had to put
- 2:44:02Speaker 2: my brother's book ahead of yours. I had to read
- 2:44:04Speaker 2: the steps because I'm reading about my life, too. And
- 2:44:07Speaker 2: I said, now, next, I got to read your book.
- 2:44:12Speaker 3: My book just upstaged Sylvester Stallone's new book, ladies and gentlemen.
- 2:44:17Speaker 3: That's breaking news right now.
- 2:44:19Speaker 2: But it's really weird. You know, I was talking to
- 2:44:22Speaker 2: Sly yesterday. He goes, can you believe it? I said,
- 2:44:26Speaker 2: is your book... number one on New York Times. He goes, Frank,
- 2:44:30Speaker 2: it's number one in the world.
- 2:44:32Speaker 33: Wow. Wow.
- 2:44:33Speaker 2: It's a book of, you know, it's just a, you know,
- 2:44:36Speaker 2: and of course, when I read the book, you know,
- 2:44:38Speaker 2: I was there. I was privy to, you know, this
- 2:44:41Speaker 2: time growing up. And I said, how weird would it
- 2:44:44Speaker 2: be if Anthony Ippolito, who's playing Sly in this movie,
- 2:44:49Speaker 2: I Play Rocky, how weird would it be? Like, they're
- 2:44:54Speaker 2: talking Oscar buzz.
- 2:44:55Speaker 3: What is this kid doing?
- 2:44:57Speaker 2: Wins the Academy Award for playing my brother, who's playing,
- 2:45:02Speaker 2: trying to get Rocky made, and Sly lost his Academy
- 2:45:07Speaker 2: Award for Rocky. How weird was that? A guy playing
- 2:45:11Speaker 2: you trying to do Rocky.
- 2:45:13Speaker 3: It's crazy. Well, your career and Sly's career at your
- 2:45:18Speaker 3: ages are far from over. How do you like that ending?
- 2:45:23Speaker 2: Well, maybe when I wrote Far From Over... Maybe I
- 2:45:26Speaker 2: was looking into the crystal ball because I really have
- 2:45:30Speaker 2: no intention of retiring or being one of those guys like, well,
- 2:45:38Speaker 2: it was a good time. I want to be like
- 2:45:40Speaker 2: Frankie Lane or Tony Bennett. I mean, they rock till
- 2:45:44Speaker 2: they drop till they.
- 2:45:45Speaker 8: Can't do it anymore.
- 2:45:46Speaker 3: No, that's going to be you because you look great.
- 2:45:48Speaker 3: You're in great shape. You know, one thing about our generation,
- 2:45:53Speaker 3: we may grow old, but we'll never look old. We're
- 2:45:55Speaker 3: rocking well.
- 2:45:56Speaker 2: No, I think we're from, you know, and Tom, as you,
- 2:46:00Speaker 2: you know, being in the business as long as you
- 2:46:01Speaker 2: have on the kind of a different thing of what
- 2:46:05Speaker 2: I do is, I think, you know, Frank Sinatra told
- 2:46:09Speaker 2: me this. I swear to God with dinner goes, never
- 2:46:12Speaker 2: disrespect your audience, meaning show up on time, look good,
- 2:46:17Speaker 2: be prepared, and, you know, and don't ever disrespect your audience.
- 2:46:23Speaker 2: And I still have that with me. You know, we
- 2:46:27Speaker 2: don't get slobbingly. We dress properly for the occasion. You know,
- 2:46:33Speaker 2: we don't curse on stage. I mean, now that's like commonplace.
- 2:46:37Speaker 2: But the real pros don't do that. Even the Stones,
- 2:46:43Speaker 2: you have.
- 2:46:44Speaker 33: To be a pro.
- 2:46:45Speaker 3: Well, and you are a pro, and you have shown
- 2:46:48Speaker 3: up on time, be it 5.30 in the morning out there. Frankie,
- 2:46:52Speaker 3: I've got to run, man. Say hello to Sly and everybody.
- 2:46:55Speaker 3: We're happy for you, and keep going.
- 2:46:57Speaker 2: Well, I love you, Tom, and I'll be talking to
- 2:47:00Speaker 2: you soon, probably later today.
- 2:47:04Speaker 3: You'll probably catch me at the deli eating a chicken
- 2:47:06Speaker 3: salad sandwich.
- 2:47:07Speaker 5: All right, man.
- 2:47:08Speaker 28: I will.
- 2:47:08Speaker 33: Okay, man.
- 2:47:09Speaker 2: It's called Chicken Canton.
- 2:47:12Speaker 3: Take care, Frankie. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you've
- 2:47:18Speaker 3: enjoyed the show today. It was my pleasure having all
- 2:47:22Speaker 3: these people on, calling in from everywhere, notable people. They've
- 2:47:26Speaker 3: got great stories. I started the show with, have a
- 2:47:30Speaker 3: happy day on me. I'm going to end it with,
- 2:47:32Speaker 3: I hope you had a happy day on me.
