- 0:32Speaker 2: Virginia Hunting Fishing Show, Day two getting started right now.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Even as we come on the air, the doors are opening.
- 0:38Speaker 2: If you're on your way down today, appreciate you listening in, stop,
- 0:42Speaker 2: buy and see us. We're going to be on the
- 0:43Speaker 2: air here visiting with a number of the people involved
- 0:45Speaker 2: in the show until noon here on five eight WCHS.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And like I said this morning on West Virginia out Doors,
- 0:52Speaker 2: it is almost a state law now that I cannot
- 0:55Speaker 2: start any broadcast from this event without Glenn Jarrell of
- 0:58Speaker 2: the West Virginia Trophy Hunters Association as guest number one.
- 1:02Speaker 3: How you doing, Buddy, I'm doing great. Thanks again, Chris
- 1:04Speaker 3: for coming down. You are the voice the West Virginia
- 1:09Speaker 3: fishing boys. Well, I appreciate that voice of outdoors.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's it's worked out well that I've that I've started
- 1:14Speaker 2: every show with you, They've all come off without a hedge.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So I think that that's the key is to start
- 1:18Speaker 2: with you absolutely.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And I want to tell you, Chris, you did a
- 1:20Speaker 3: great job yesterday. I just talked to one of the
- 1:22Speaker 3: vendors that I came in to your legs who sells
- 1:25Speaker 3: a saucy Oh yeah, he sold out yesterday evening.
- 1:27Speaker 4: He cooked all night.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Wow, so he's got the meat casey again.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I bought. I bought a pack from him. That was
- 1:35Speaker 2: my supper last night, A pack of those snacksticks with
- 1:37Speaker 2: the cheddar. You can't beat those. And if you like
- 1:39Speaker 2: the hot stuff is alipino. I'm told is that's not me,
- 1:42Speaker 2: but the Jalipino. He has that as well, and it's
- 1:44Speaker 2: pretty good. So yesterday we got things started to Saturday
- 1:48Speaker 2: is always the big day here. People have been cooped
- 1:52Speaker 2: up for the past what two weeks with ice and snow.
- 1:55Speaker 2: We finally got some good weather and it's a great
- 1:57Speaker 2: opportunity to come out and spend the day with the
- 1:59Speaker 2: family here in an event that will probably have something
- 2:02Speaker 2: for everybody.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Absolutely what we do have, like I say, we have
- 2:06Speaker 3: the food here. We have outfitter from all over the
- 2:09Speaker 3: all over the place. If you want to book a
- 2:11Speaker 3: bear hunt from Canada, the guys are here. If you
- 2:13Speaker 3: want to book an elk hunt Annalee Punt, the western
- 2:17Speaker 3: guys are well represented. We have fishing captains from the
- 2:20Speaker 3: Great Lakes if you want to do any kind of
- 2:22Speaker 3: fishing of whitewater.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Ever, what it's here and exactly now I want to
- 2:27Speaker 2: bring into the fold here a new voice from the show,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and that's Tyler Roebuck. Is that? Do I say that correctly?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Tyler Roebeck? Roadback? Tyler Roeback. Now he's also with the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Trophy Hunters Association. And you are you in charge of
- 2:41Speaker 2: the White Taill Hall of Fame? Are you just the
- 2:42Speaker 2: last one hired and they sent you over here?
- 2:45Speaker 5: I was the voluntold manager of the Whitetel Hall of Fame.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The volunt told it's interesting too, Glenn that the Trophy
- 2:52Speaker 2: Hunters unlike other organizations in this state. I mean, you
- 2:55Speaker 2: all obviously are a conservation organization as well, but this
- 2:59Speaker 2: is your all thing is to put this show on
- 3:01Speaker 2: and then the proceeds go to hunting and fishing, conservation
- 3:06Speaker 2: as well as youth outdoor education.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Absolutely, after we pay oliver bills, all the profit goes
- 3:11Speaker 3: to organizations that promote outdoor activities. They promote conservation, anything
- 3:17Speaker 3: to do with the outdoors, especially youth education.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Tyler, the Whitetail Hall of Fame. I don't know
- 3:23Speaker 2: if you were around when it was over in the
- 3:25Speaker 2: in a separate room over here in the corner. But
- 3:27Speaker 2: when they rebuilt the Civic Center, it's become part of
- 3:29Speaker 2: the main floor. Here. It's in the and when you
- 3:32Speaker 2: walk in the door, it's the far left corner. That's
- 3:34Speaker 2: where the white Tail Hall of Fame is. How do
- 3:37Speaker 2: you determine who gets to hang one on the wall
- 3:39Speaker 2: over there?
- 3:41Speaker 5: So there's a point scoring system. It's a minimum point
- 3:47Speaker 5: requirement for archery of one ten and that's to be
- 3:50Speaker 5: officially scored by the West Virginia dn R. And then
- 3:54Speaker 5: one point thirty is the minimum for the rifle or
- 3:58Speaker 5: gun section.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It's interesting too, these were not all killed in the
- 4:02Speaker 2: past year. I mean many of these have been killed
- 4:04Speaker 2: for years.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Yeah, then there's some mounts up there that are thirty
- 4:07Speaker 5: thirty five years old, and people just keep bringing them
- 4:09Speaker 5: back every year. And as long as you know it's
- 4:11Speaker 5: in the d n R system that has been scored
- 4:14Speaker 5: at some point, then they're allowed to hanging up.
- 4:16Speaker 2: What is the what what do you get for hanging
- 4:21Speaker 2: for bringing your mount down here and hanging it in
- 4:23Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame? Is there a other than the
- 4:25Speaker 2: prestige if your in the Hall of Fame. There's a
- 4:27Speaker 2: few things. The biggest thing is a raffle.
- 4:30Speaker 5: There's a drawing for both the archery and rifle categories
- 4:36Speaker 5: for two hundred and fifty dollars gift card to Cabelli's.
- 4:39Speaker 5: You also get a free T shirt and we're giving
- 4:43Speaker 5: away some patches as well.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I got you, I got you, and a lot of
- 4:46Speaker 2: guys it's the same guys every year bringing their mouths in.
- 4:49Speaker 5: There are some guys that bring the same five six
- 4:51Speaker 5: deer in every year.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:52Speaker 5: And every time you bring you know, each head that
- 4:54Speaker 5: you bring in that qualifies you get another opportunity to
- 4:57Speaker 5: win the raffle tickets.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, I'll just point out I don't have
- 5:02Speaker 2: one hanging in there because I haven't I mean had
- 5:04Speaker 2: to meet those minimum requirements. Glenn. You've got like eight
- 5:08Speaker 2: back there, don't you.
- 5:09Speaker 6: I will.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Probably have to hit one of the car the only
- 5:13Speaker 3: way I'd ever get.
- 5:14Speaker 2: One back there. Thirty seven years we've been doing this show, Glenn. Well,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you all have been doing it, not I. But I
- 5:20Speaker 2: remember the first time I came to this show. I
- 5:22Speaker 2: lived in Morgantown and I was not even the West
- 5:25Speaker 2: Virginia Indoors didn't even exist. But I heard about it
- 5:28Speaker 2: and I thought, I'm wanna go down there and give
- 5:29Speaker 2: give that a try. It man, I was so impressed,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and the way it is run is really cool. And
- 5:35Speaker 2: then eventually, as I got the show developed and I
- 5:38Speaker 2: came down and became a vendor, so to speak. The
- 5:42Speaker 2: amount of help that your organization gives to vendors when
- 5:45Speaker 2: they come here, that's talked about on the show circuit
- 5:48Speaker 2: all over the country because a lot of these guys
- 5:50Speaker 2: go from show to show to show and they don't
- 5:52Speaker 2: get the kind of reception and hospitality that you all
- 5:55Speaker 2: offer them.
- 5:55Speaker 3: No, Chris, it's just West Virginia hospitality. That that's all
- 5:59Speaker 3: it is. We meet them at the door, we try
- 6:02Speaker 3: to help them find out where their booth is help
- 6:04Speaker 3: them take everything to their booth and set it up.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And it's just like Trevis and those guys they hang
- 6:11Speaker 3: the mountains are very careful with them and to thank
- 6:13Speaker 3: the people for bringing them. It's just West Virginia people,
- 6:16Speaker 3: that's all.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Tyler, it's good to meet you, man. And I hope,
- 6:19Speaker 2: I hope I didn't grill you too hard about the
- 6:21Speaker 2: White Tail Hall of Fame? Is there anything else that
- 6:22Speaker 2: you want people to know about that when they come
- 6:24Speaker 2: to see it today?
- 6:26Speaker 5: Honestly, just just come take a look at it. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 5: if you got things laying around the house, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 5: mounts that you need or want people to see that
- 6:35Speaker 5: you're proud of, you know, bring them up, get them scored.
- 6:38Speaker 5: If they meet the you know the ones had the
- 6:39Speaker 5: one thirty requirements, we'll hang it up on the wall
- 6:42Speaker 5: and you get a chance to one.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Of the Do they do they have to have been
- 6:46Speaker 2: killed in West Virginia.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Yes, Yes, that's another requirement that has to be killed
- 6:50Speaker 5: in West Virginia.
- 6:51Speaker 2: It's the West Virginia Hall of Fame. We get that
- 6:53Speaker 2: question quite often. Yeah, exactly, Glenn Jerrell and Tyler Roeback,
- 6:58Speaker 2: thanks so much. Guys and should be a good show
- 7:00Speaker 2: this weekend. Thanks Chris, appreciate it.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Thanks Chris for having us.
- 7:03Speaker 2: All right, thank you Glenn. We got to take into
- 7:05Speaker 2: our first break of the morning. But when we come back,
- 7:07Speaker 2: we're going to talk to the lady who has probably
- 7:10Speaker 2: got the most popular booth here on the show floor.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I'm talking about the pickle lady that's coming up after this.
- 7:16Speaker 7: When the canal vently needs to know it tunes to

- 10:58Speaker 2: auctioned off as well. And all the proceeds go to
- 11:01Speaker 2: the Youth Outdoors Education and Conservation causes. So five o'clock
- 11:05Speaker 2: the charity auction here at this show. Back to some
- 11:09Speaker 2: of the vendors. We got here. One of the most
- 11:10Speaker 2: popular booths that you will find here, and I don't
- 11:14Speaker 2: know how it became that, but it is the Crazy Cucumber.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Katie Varga is in charge of that. How are you, Katie?
- 11:21Speaker 15: I'm good. How are you?
- 11:22Speaker 2: I'm doing well? Now? When did you all come up
- 11:25Speaker 2: with the idea of selling pickles at a show like this?
- 11:28Speaker 16: We started in twenty fourteen, and our first year would
- 11:32Speaker 16: be eleven years ago, and we started here in twenty fifteen, Collie, And.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I mean at some point during the day, at several
- 11:40Speaker 2: points during the day, there'll be fourteen deep around your
- 11:43Speaker 2: booth over there.
- 11:44Speaker 15: That is crat col Yep.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Did that shock you how popular it was?
- 11:49Speaker 15: It absolutely has.
- 11:49Speaker 16: I mean, it was a small dream that's turned into
- 11:52Speaker 16: a big dream for me and my dad.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Actually, really, so you and your dad put this together
- 11:56Speaker 2: as we start.
- 11:57Speaker 16: Yep, me and my dad started together, and then it's
- 11:59Speaker 16: just grown from there.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Do you make the pickles we do? Where do you
- 12:02Speaker 2: get that many cucumbers?
- 12:04Speaker 15: Well, you have to wholesale them from a bunch of places.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I got you. And how many different varieties of pickles
- 12:09Speaker 2: do you sell?
- 12:10Speaker 15: We make twenty different kinds.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Can you make them yourself? Yes?
- 12:13Speaker 16: In your house in our licensed commercial kitchen. Oh okay, yes,
- 12:16Speaker 16: not our house.
- 12:17Speaker 15: But yes, we're licensed and have a commercial kitchen.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I got you. And where are you all? Where's that?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Where are you all from?
- 12:23Speaker 15: We're out of Johnstown, Ohio?
- 12:24Speaker 2: Okay, And we were just talking. I have a cousin
- 12:26Speaker 2: who lives in Johnstown here you actually knew. Yeah, that's
- 12:29Speaker 2: the most West Virginia thing ever right there. So, and
- 12:32Speaker 2: you started this in twenty fourteen. Is this your main
- 12:35Speaker 2: gig or do you have another job?
- 12:36Speaker 3: No?
- 12:36Speaker 15: No, this is my main gig.
- 12:38Speaker 16: I actually have a nursing degree as well, and I
- 12:41Speaker 16: worked at until twenty seventeen, and then in twenty seventeen
- 12:44Speaker 16: I quit.
- 12:44Speaker 15: And this is what I've been doing fully since then.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what, as popular as they are,
- 12:48Speaker 2: because I have friends who do not hunter fish and
- 12:52Speaker 2: the girls, and they don't they have no interest in
- 12:55Speaker 2: anything here, but they're like, we're coming over to get pickles,
- 12:58Speaker 2: and they'll just come and get like three or four
- 12:59Speaker 2: tubs those pickles.
- 13:00Speaker 17: Oh.
- 13:00Speaker 15: Absolutely, I mean that's what's been great for us.
- 13:02Speaker 16: I mean, while this is a hunting and fishing show,
- 13:04Speaker 16: we're also appealing to women and children at the same time,
- 13:08Speaker 16: and so we're bringing more people in by getting them
- 13:10Speaker 16: to come with their husbands.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And you'll see them walking around just eating pickles. Yet
- 13:15Speaker 2: now I'm not I like pickles, but I don't like
- 13:17Speaker 2: them that much. But what is the best selling pickle
- 13:21Speaker 2: you have?
- 13:21Speaker 16: So our number one seller is deal pickle pickle. But
- 13:24Speaker 16: I will say down here in West Virginia, everybody loves
- 13:27Speaker 16: sweet pickles. So our sweet heat, spicy bread and butter,
- 13:30Speaker 16: and bread and butter have been flying off the shelf.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And how did you come up with all these different
- 13:35Speaker 2: recipes and varieties?
- 13:37Speaker 16: Just try on air and then like you know, I
- 13:39Speaker 16: I see other people make other flavors that you may
- 13:41Speaker 16: not have thought of.
- 13:42Speaker 15: So we we buy, we test, and we just keep going.
- 13:45Speaker 2: And what are some of the more unique ones?
- 13:48Speaker 16: Well, right now we have a jalapeno line, which is
- 13:50Speaker 16: just amazing. Now that one did not make it down
- 13:52Speaker 16: here yet this year, but that's like a summertime one.
- 13:56Speaker 16: We also have a new one coming out that's sweet
- 14:00Speaker 16: with garlic.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Wow. Okay. So and what are the are the any
- 14:05Speaker 2: unusual ones that that people like? Is their birthday cake
- 14:08Speaker 2: pickles or something like that?
- 14:09Speaker 16: No, no, there are there are somewhere in the world.
- 14:11Speaker 16: I'm sure there's like cool a pickles and stuff both.
- 14:14Speaker 16: We really haven't dabbled into that yet.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Say you don't do the really odd.
- 14:17Speaker 4: No, no, no weird ones.
- 14:19Speaker 15: We know what everybody likes and that's what we kind
- 14:20Speaker 15: of stick with.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And how do you how many do you bring with
- 14:23Speaker 2: you when you come to a show like this?
- 14:24Speaker 15: So this show we bought, we brought over one.
- 14:27Speaker 16: Thousand pounds of pickles, holy, about two hundred buckets.
- 14:30Speaker 2: How many shows do you do a year?
- 14:32Speaker 15: We set up and sell at over four hundred shows
- 14:35Speaker 15: a year.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Holy, cal that's you're somewhere ever weekend.
- 14:38Speaker 15: Are we are? And sometimes multiple times?
- 14:40Speaker 2: When do you find time to make well.
- 14:43Speaker 16: During the week week we do production on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- 14:46Speaker 2: What's the furthest you guys travel to sell pickles?
- 14:50Speaker 16: Well, this is three hours from our house. We go
- 14:52Speaker 16: to the Kentucky State Fair, which is for four and
- 14:55Speaker 16: a half hours.
- 14:55Speaker 15: From our house.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Oh okay, and then it's just kind of a radius
- 14:58Speaker 2: that that this is about his far as you go out.
- 15:02Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean we would travel, but we've been really
- 15:04Speaker 16: blessed with great farmers markets in our area, so those
- 15:06Speaker 16: have been really good for us.
- 15:07Speaker 15: So that's where we stay at mainly.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I got you and and you said that you wholesale?
- 15:11Speaker 2: These are they locally grown there in the Ohio area,
- 15:13Speaker 2: because that's that's farm country.
- 15:15Speaker 16: So as much as you can, but with cucumbers, you
- 15:17Speaker 16: only really get one good season unless you have big greenhouses.
- 15:20Speaker 16: So some come from Ohio, some are coming from other places.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I got you, I got you. Well. Katie Varga is
- 15:26Speaker 2: the lady at the Crazy Cucumber. She's the pickle lady,
- 15:29Speaker 2: and everybody comes here to grab a pack of pickles.
- 15:32Speaker 2: And if you're wondering about what a lot of the
- 15:35Speaker 2: ladies are doing at the show, they're picking up the pickles.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, thanks so much, because I know thank you
- 15:40Speaker 2: for at least having the time to come up here.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I wanted to talk to you because it's such a
- 15:43Speaker 2: popular booth and an unusual item is that is sold here.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and I know you're going to be so
- 15:50Speaker 2: busy here in about an hour that I couldn't have
- 15:52Speaker 2: pulled you away to do it.
- 15:53Speaker 15: So thanks for coming up Oh anytime. Thank you.
- 15:54Speaker 2: All right. Katie Varga there from the Crazy Cucumber. Talk
- 15:58Speaker 2: to her. She's the pickled Lady. And oh she even
- 16:00Speaker 2: has a has a cheering audience out here. I like that.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Let's shift gears now to a guy who has not
- 16:05Speaker 2: got an audience. Bobby Bauer Pro River Outfitters.
- 16:07Speaker 17: What are you doing, man, Well, I'm thinking about having
- 16:09Speaker 17: some pickles for breakfast, you know, before it gets too busy.
- 16:14Speaker 17: It's pretty amazing how many people line up to get pickles.
- 16:17Speaker 17: It really is any constant flow of pickle people by
- 16:20Speaker 17: the booth all day every day. So if you guys
- 16:22Speaker 17: want pickles, you better come get them quick.
- 16:24Speaker 2: When I when I have to leave the booth to
- 16:26Speaker 2: go out to the lobby, I try to take another
- 16:28Speaker 2: route because you can't get by the pickle booth. There's
- 16:29Speaker 2: too many people and.
- 16:31Speaker 17: By Sunday midday the floor is so sticky that day
- 16:34Speaker 17: you kind of get stuck there. I think they might
- 16:36Speaker 17: have that as part of their marketing.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Employee get the.
- 16:39Speaker 17: Sticky people can't get by. They got to spend their
- 16:42Speaker 17: money before they keep moving. Now you're you're telling tales
- 16:44Speaker 17: out of school.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Now imagine that. I mean, I'm a fishing guy.
- 16:47Speaker 17: You knows. You know, by tomorrow will be a whole
- 16:51Speaker 17: new story. How how was your year last year? Did
- 16:53Speaker 17: you catch a lot of fish? It was out of sight?
- 16:55Speaker 17: You know, we had really really low water. It was
- 16:58Speaker 17: super clear and and you know we like the low water.
- 17:03Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 17:04Speaker 17: It was probably the best numbers I've had in the
- 17:07Speaker 17: last decades. So you know, the spawns have been good
- 17:10Speaker 17: and the New River is on fire. The a lot
- 17:14Speaker 17: of small fish, so that's good because they're getting bigger.
- 17:17Speaker 17: So it was one of the better days with better
- 17:19Speaker 17: years we've had.
- 17:20Speaker 2: We obviously talk a lot about smallmouth on the New
- 17:22Speaker 2: River because that is the species that draws people in.
- 17:25Speaker 2: But we would be remiss if we didn't talk about
- 17:27Speaker 2: the work that has been done to bring along the walleyes.
- 17:30Speaker 2: The walleye fishing is is on point.
- 17:32Speaker 17: It's it's hard to go out and just target walleye
- 17:36Speaker 17: except for it in the spring and things are like
- 17:38Speaker 17: below Sandstone Falls or kanal Falls where their spawning grounds are.
- 17:42Speaker 17: But you know, we're we're catching big walleye on a
- 17:45Speaker 17: regular basis, so you know, you're although we're hunting, hunting
- 17:48Speaker 17: small mouth, you know, we're hooking up some nice walleye
- 17:51Speaker 17: and they're getting to be you know, a twenty to
- 17:53Speaker 17: twenty four inch walleye is not that uncommon now.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Done a lot of studies, a lot of stories on
- 17:58Speaker 2: this over the year. Mark Scott, who just retired from
- 18:00Speaker 2: the DNR. This was one of his pet projects when
- 18:02Speaker 2: he started. But they isolated a gene. The smart guys
- 18:06Speaker 2: at Virginia Tech in their their Wildlife and fisheries some
- 18:09Speaker 2: researchers figured out that there is a gene that is
- 18:11Speaker 2: unique to the New River that had had largely been
- 18:15Speaker 2: lost and what was here now was the New was
- 18:18Speaker 2: the Lake Eries strain, and those aren't nearly as hardy.
- 18:22Speaker 2: But once they were able to isolate that particular gene
- 18:25Speaker 2: and replicate it, and then suddenly reproduce them. What they
- 18:29Speaker 2: found was that those walleyes in the New River and
- 18:32Speaker 2: that new River strain, they grow so much faster and
- 18:35Speaker 2: they're so much more aggressive. So in two or three
- 18:38Speaker 2: years you're gonna have an eighteen to twenty four inch
- 18:41Speaker 2: walley It's going to tear your arm off. Yeah, it's awesome.
- 18:44Speaker 17: I've followed marks projects since the since the he had
- 18:47Speaker 17: introduced it years ago, and it's it's worked. It's really
- 18:51Speaker 17: neat that they brought those fish back. And yeah, they
- 18:55Speaker 17: grow quick and they fight a lot harder than normal walleye.
- 18:59Speaker 17: Typically catch one fights for a second, but these things
- 19:01Speaker 17: are kind of scrappy.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you along with the guidework that you do, your
- 19:07Speaker 2: main business is really selling rafts. Yeah, I design and
- 19:11Speaker 2: manufacture rafts.
- 19:12Speaker 17: We do have a warehouse in Fayetteville, Oak Hill area,
- 19:16Speaker 17: so where a company called Rocky Mountain Rafts. We have
- 19:19Speaker 17: about ten of us now working in West Virginia. We
- 19:21Speaker 17: migrated from Colorado to West Virginia and going really well.
- 19:26Speaker 17: I've got one of my brand new rafts that just
- 19:28Speaker 17: came out this week. So this is the first showing
- 19:31Speaker 17: of the new Flow one thirty two fishing boat. It's
- 19:35Speaker 17: like half the price of most of the competitors. We're
- 19:40Speaker 17: gonna turn it upside down. It's a neat boat. The
- 19:43Speaker 17: people have been super psyched about it.
- 19:44Speaker 2: One of the things that's really important when you're when
- 19:46Speaker 2: you're fishing, at least on a float trip, is comfort.
- 19:49Speaker 2: As opposed to the white water guys. It's the ideas
- 19:52Speaker 2: to get wet y and to stay dry is the
- 19:55Speaker 2: is the idea when you're fishing. What kind of modifications
- 19:58Speaker 2: do you make to the rafts to make s sure
- 20:00Speaker 2: that those are the two goals that are met.
- 20:02Speaker 17: Yeah, This boat that we have at the show, the
- 20:04Speaker 17: new raft, it has a drop stitch floor. So if
- 20:07Speaker 17: you know what a stand up paddle board is, it's
- 20:09Speaker 17: a solid inflatable piece, so really easy to stand on,
- 20:13Speaker 17: really comfortable. We have padded swivel seats. We're into maximum
- 20:17Speaker 17: comfort for sure when we're out there fishing. Could you
- 20:19Speaker 17: spend a bunch of time. We also have stand up
- 20:22Speaker 17: paddle boards and kayaks and inner tubes that you can
- 20:24Speaker 17: snow or snow or float and you know, kind of
- 20:28Speaker 17: a full line of products.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Well, and standing up is so important when you're when
- 20:32Speaker 2: you're talking about the fishing, because it's a lot easier
- 20:37Speaker 2: fish standing up that' sit down, particularly if you've got
- 20:39Speaker 2: a big one on the line, without a doubt.
- 20:41Speaker 17: So the drop Stitch floor is just a really stable platform,
- 20:44Speaker 17: and we have if you come by the show, the
- 20:46Speaker 17: frames have leaning bars and uh it's very really custom
- 20:51Speaker 17: outfitted and real proud of them. The price is right
- 20:54Speaker 17: as well, So we got a little store up in
- 20:57Speaker 17: Fanville and we're selling boats all around. We're really the
- 20:59Speaker 17: only dealer in the eastern United States.
- 21:01Speaker 2: On one final question, how much has the Declaration of
- 21:06Speaker 2: the of the Park and Preserve from what it was
- 21:09Speaker 2: to become an actual National Parking Preserve. How much differences
- 21:12Speaker 2: that made in the traffic and the people that you've
- 21:14Speaker 2: had through there. You know, it's it's brought a lot
- 21:17Speaker 2: more people and it's a different kind of crowd than
- 21:19Speaker 2: we had, you know, ten years ago. I do jipboat tours,
- 21:24Speaker 2: I've done a number of different businesses and it's just
- 21:28Speaker 2: been amazing.
- 21:29Speaker 17: I mean, we have people coming year round now. It's
- 21:33Speaker 17: it's it definitely has up the visitation in the New
- 21:37Speaker 17: River Gorge area and there's so much to do there.
- 21:40Speaker 17: So if you're out though out this summer. Come by
- 21:43Speaker 17: Pro River Outfitters and we'll hook you up. We got
- 21:45Speaker 17: all the toys.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Sounds good. Bobby boy our Pro River Outfitters, stop by
- 21:49Speaker 2: and see me. He's actually in the booth, just a
- 21:50Speaker 2: couple of doors down from our Radio Ranch booth here
- 21:53Speaker 2: on the show floor at the Charleston Collish Convention Center.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Bobby always good, See buddy. All right, We got to
- 21:59Speaker 2: take a break, but we've got more. Come and we're

- 22:20Speaker 13: and broadband expansion funds.
- 22:22Speaker 18: That are obligated, in other words, are formula funds. Even
- 22:25Speaker 18: if we have a discretionary grant, that money has been
- 22:28Speaker 18: obligated to us. The one point two billion has been

- 25:38Speaker 2: Welcome back to the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show.
- 25:41Speaker 2: A special edition of West Virginia out Doors were live
- 25:44Speaker 2: on the show floor. The doors are open here at
- 25:46Speaker 2: the Hunt and Fishing Show until nine o'clock to night.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Hours tomorrow are ten until five. Twelve dollars is the
- 25:53Speaker 2: admission price, but if you're under the age of twelve,
- 25:56Speaker 2: you get yourself in free. We continue to talk to
- 25:58Speaker 2: several of the vendors on the show floor here, and
- 26:01Speaker 2: one of the big draws of this particular event is
- 26:04Speaker 2: the opportunity to go hunting or fishing in someplace you've
- 26:07Speaker 2: never been before. Fortunately, I've gotten a couple of opportunities
- 26:11Speaker 2: to fish in Canada, and Gordon Bowen with Long Point
- 26:15Speaker 2: Lodge is one of those guys that can provide you
- 26:17Speaker 2: with that opportunity. Gordon's could see him. Man, come up
- 26:21Speaker 2: on the mic. There a little bit for me. There
- 26:23Speaker 2: we go. Where exactly is your camp located? Long Point Lodge.
- 26:27Speaker 24: It's about eight dollars eight and a half hours straight
- 26:30Speaker 24: north of Buffalo.
- 26:31Speaker 6: It's seventeen hour drive from here.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I got you, and so you'd leave early in the
- 26:35Speaker 2: morning you get there late in the evening.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Yeah, about seventeen hour drive.
- 26:39Speaker 2: How I remember when I came to Canada, and this
- 26:41Speaker 2: has been ten fifteen years ago, but there was a
- 26:45Speaker 2: lot of people trying to the border is where things
- 26:47Speaker 2: slow down because obviously it's a border. How hard is
- 26:50Speaker 2: it to get through there? Now?
- 26:51Speaker 24: The border is really simple now as long as you've
- 26:53Speaker 24: got your just your passports, there's no problem crossing the
- 26:56Speaker 24: border whatsoever.
- 26:57Speaker 6: And it's not near as like holiday weekends.
- 27:00Speaker 24: Yes it's bad, but if a person comes across, like
- 27:03Speaker 24: on a Friday, Friday afternoons and stuff, that's really good.
- 27:06Speaker 24: Saturday mornings, it can be a hassle getting across because
- 27:09Speaker 24: when people cross, and like most of our guests from
- 27:11Speaker 24: down here, they'll leave on Friday and drive up and
- 27:15Speaker 24: maybe get as far as Toronto, stay overnight.
- 27:17Speaker 6: But they tried to get across the border on the Fridays.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Oah yeah, yeah do uh. And I know once you
- 27:24Speaker 2: get north of Toronto it starts to get a little
- 27:26Speaker 2: less populated up there. Oh yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 24: But like if the highways are busier now, like that's
- 27:33Speaker 24: the thing, Like it takes a little longer now because
- 27:35Speaker 24: there's more trucks on the road, yeah, and more traffic
- 27:37Speaker 24: now compared to say twenty years ago when you came.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Up right now, the one thing was though, I mean
- 27:43Speaker 2: these aren't dirt roads, they're paved even in the middle
- 27:45Speaker 2: of nowhere, you got paved roads up there.
- 27:47Speaker 24: And now with that new highway around Toronto makes all
- 27:49Speaker 24: the difference in the world because years ago, say twenty
- 27:52Speaker 24: five years ago, when we used to come down here
- 27:54Speaker 24: these shows, people went to Toronto and they just said
- 27:57Speaker 24: it was a nightmare, so they would never come back.
- 27:59Speaker 6: Now you you take that etr that pay highway right.
- 28:02Speaker 24: As a toll road, just expensive, but saved you an
- 28:05Speaker 24: hour and you don't even see the city right.
- 28:08Speaker 2: And the funny thing is when I did that, I
- 28:10Speaker 2: they you don't have to You don't even realize you're
- 28:12Speaker 2: being told. They just send you a bill, have to
- 28:14Speaker 2: make check out your license. And for so many years
- 28:19Speaker 2: I kept getting a bill from those folks for two cents,
- 28:22Speaker 2: and I kept sending them two cents, and I'd get
- 28:25Speaker 2: another bill for two cents. I was like, and finally
- 28:27Speaker 2: I was just like, you know what, if you want
- 28:28Speaker 2: to come and put me in your Canadian jail for
- 28:30Speaker 2: being a dibnor, go ahead, I'm not sending you any
- 28:32Speaker 2: more coins through the mail.
- 28:34Speaker 6: But the point bad thing is if a person don't
- 28:36Speaker 6: pay for these tolls and stuff. Yeah, sometimes if you
- 28:39Speaker 6: go across the border. That's all on your passport. Don't
- 28:42Speaker 6: because that is an unpaid uh huh. I think same
- 28:45Speaker 6: as like.
- 28:46Speaker 24: Now when we come down like on seventy nine or
- 28:48Speaker 24: ninety up in Buffalo, before you had stopped and you
- 28:51Speaker 24: paid your toll. Now it's electronic, just like it is
- 28:54Speaker 24: up at our places. They just send you a bill.
- 28:56Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 6: So if I don't pay that toll, if.
- 28:58Speaker 24: I go to come back to the States again, I
- 29:01Speaker 24: can't cross the border because I got an outstanding.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Oh geezz oh goodness, I may be an outlaw in Canada.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Probably I'll check that out. But before I go, tell
- 29:10Speaker 2: me a little bit about your about Long Point Lodge.
- 29:12Speaker 2: What do you offer folks and if they're going to
- 29:14Speaker 2: come fishing with you, what are they Like?
- 29:16Speaker 24: We have, like I said, like a hunting and fishing
- 29:18Speaker 24: camp as well as family vacations, like we do the
- 29:20Speaker 24: spring black bear hunt and then we do a lot
- 29:23Speaker 24: of trope fishing in the spring. July and August is
- 29:26Speaker 24: more family groups and then we do it like then
- 29:28Speaker 24: we got the pike walleyed bass. As the weather's better
- 29:32Speaker 24: for the families, you don't have the black flies like
- 29:34Speaker 24: in July and August.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Like you do in June.
- 29:36Speaker 24: Then the fall we have our spring small game season,
- 29:39Speaker 24: we have our fall black bear hunt, and then we
- 29:43Speaker 24: also have the fall moose hunt. But don't we don't
- 29:46Speaker 24: cater to none residents for the moose hunts because we
- 29:49Speaker 24: just can't get the tags for the moose hunt.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I was going to say, how hard are those to get?
- 29:53Speaker 2: I figure for moose, they're they're pretty well regulated, aren't you.
- 29:56Speaker 24: Unit forty where we are is probably the worst one
- 29:58Speaker 24: in Ontario to get a tag on.
- 30:00Speaker 2: So do you have a lot of moose there? I
- 30:02Speaker 2: mean you do that.
- 30:03Speaker 24: We had lost for a long time, and then when
- 30:06Speaker 24: they did all the new clear cuts and stuff and
- 30:08Speaker 24: with the ATVs and everything, that really hurt the moose
- 30:11Speaker 24: population for about ten years.
- 30:13Speaker 6: But then they changed the tag system and it's really
- 30:16Speaker 6: brought the moose population back up again.
- 30:19Speaker 24: Like I had a moose right in her yard about
- 30:21Speaker 24: three months ago, off in through the yard.
- 30:23Speaker 2: That's what the bro sure you need to take the
- 30:25Speaker 2: picture of that.
- 30:26Speaker 6: You never had the caverns?
- 30:30Speaker 2: Yeah? What about the bear? What is the procedure? Do
- 30:33Speaker 2: you have to draw for a bear tag or are
- 30:35Speaker 2: they over the counter?
- 30:36Speaker 6: Yes, over the counter. As soon as you. As soon
- 30:38Speaker 6: as you buy your bear bear license.
- 30:40Speaker 2: That is your that is your tag, okay, and you're you're.
- 30:44Speaker 6: Allowed one bear.
- 30:45Speaker 24: And so when the guys come up to our place,
- 30:47Speaker 24: they can buy the license online, they can stop at
- 30:50Speaker 24: dating store and get their license, and then when they
- 30:52Speaker 24: get to our place, then it's just a matter of
- 30:54Speaker 24: filling out the paperwork. Because a non resident can't just
- 30:58Speaker 24: go down the road and shoot a bear anywhere. He
- 31:00Speaker 24: can only shoot his bear on my bear management area.
- 31:04Speaker 24: Like I pay for two hundred and fifty five thousand acres.
- 31:07Speaker 24: It's the size area that.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I good, gracious, that's a county here, but.
- 31:12Speaker 6: I'm the only one that the only outfitter that can
- 31:15Speaker 6: bear bait in that area.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I was gonna say these are all over bait, I
- 31:18Speaker 2: guess because up there the country is so thick it's
- 31:22Speaker 2: it'd be difficult to stop one.
- 31:24Speaker 6: Like even with dogs. Years ago we tried with the
- 31:27Speaker 6: people brought dogs up.
- 31:28Speaker 24: Now nobody allows a dog up there to hunt because
- 31:31Speaker 24: ninety percent of the time you guys don't have their dogs.
- 31:33Speaker 6: When they're going back home get.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Lost, they're still running one hundred miles away. You can
- 31:37Speaker 2: see them on the GPS but you can't get there
- 31:39Speaker 2: from here. So that's that's that's kind of how it goes.
- 31:42Speaker 2: How how is the fishing and what are the accommodations
- 31:44Speaker 2: when that when you come up where you staying.
- 31:46Speaker 24: The fishing usually that I always said best fishing is
- 31:49Speaker 24: last week and made the month of June because the
- 31:51Speaker 24: water's cooler and the fish are more aggressive. But the
- 31:55Speaker 24: thing is people have got to realize, like with family groups,
- 31:58Speaker 24: that's the way you don't have them in June.
- 31:59Speaker 6: Because the black fly season. You know, it's just if
- 32:02Speaker 6: you want good fishing.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Yeah, well that Yeah, the the industrial strength off is
- 32:06Speaker 2: like the cologne of the north Woods up there.
- 32:10Speaker 24: But then like all the cabins are all all have
- 32:13Speaker 24: everything in them there self self like like I mean
- 32:16Speaker 24: you've got your electric fridge, got a shower, No no
- 32:20Speaker 24: generators those aholl hydro electric and stuff.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a deal breaker for the wives. She's like,
- 32:24Speaker 2: if I can't take a shower, I'm not going I'm
- 32:26Speaker 2: not staying out there for a week with no shower.
- 32:28Speaker 2: I'm like, well, you can take a bathroom the lake.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I've done that before. Yeah, especially off, Yeah, it's a
- 32:35Speaker 2: tad cool. You won't stay in there long.
- 32:38Speaker 24: But but at least you look at the end of July,
- 32:40Speaker 24: our lake temperature gets eighty degrees.
- 32:42Speaker 2: It really Wow, that's that. That's really amazing. And uh
- 32:46Speaker 2: and I guess you said it's a pike, walleye and
- 32:48Speaker 2: smallmouth or you're.
- 32:50Speaker 6: Abdominally what we have.
- 32:51Speaker 24: But then we I do have boats on a couple
- 32:53Speaker 24: of small lakes for speckled toroat as well, but we've
- 32:55Speaker 24: got boats on like eleven different lakes other than our
- 32:58Speaker 24: main lake.
- 32:59Speaker 6: So you can go to the lake every day.
- 33:01Speaker 2: And now's a great time to go to Canada because
- 33:02Speaker 2: the exchange rate on the money, at least if you're
- 33:05Speaker 2: an American.
- 33:06Speaker 24: A dollar forty to a dollar forty five right now.
- 33:09Speaker 24: So any holiday you're looking save your holidays, one thousand
- 33:12Speaker 24: dollars holiday will take.
- 33:13Speaker 6: Forty percent off.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Wow.
- 33:15Speaker 6: So you're paying your trip, you can leave here and
- 33:18Speaker 6: drive all the way up to where we are.
- 33:20Speaker 24: You're gasoline and you could get a motel room free
- 33:24Speaker 24: your charge with what you're getting on your exchange rate.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Wow. There wasn't like that the last time I went.
- 33:29Speaker 2: It was the other way around. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah,
- 33:34Speaker 2: that now now's the time. So if you're looking to
- 33:36Speaker 2: go to Canada. Now, now's the time to book the
- 33:38Speaker 2: trip for sure. Yeah, for sure, sure, And I don't
- 33:39Speaker 2: know if it's going to change between now and the
- 33:41Speaker 2: summer when you might go. It doesn't.
- 33:43Speaker 24: It doesn't go up and down like you don't see
- 33:45Speaker 24: it drop like fifteen cents over night sort of deal,
- 33:48Speaker 24: like you know, like it takes a long time for it. Sure,
- 33:51Speaker 24: because they could say like this for ten years said
- 33:53Speaker 24: you know right.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Yeah, Gordon Bow and Long Point Lodge. Check him out.
- 33:57Speaker 2: He's got fishing and bear hunting in Canada, and you
- 33:59Speaker 2: can and you can talk to him about a trip.
- 34:01Speaker 2: There'll be a lot of fun. I can promise you
- 34:02Speaker 2: you won't regret going up there and trying this out.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Gordon's good to see you, buddy already. All right, take
- 34:08Speaker 2: it easy. Let's shift gears. Now talk to another longtime
- 34:10Speaker 2: friend of the show, see Gordon Bugsy from Bugsy's Baits
- 34:14Speaker 2: is here. Bugsy, how are you man? Doing? Awesome? Chris,
- 34:16Speaker 2: thanks for having me again, Old Booon County boy here
- 34:19Speaker 2: but now comes to us via Detroit. Yeah, I like
- 34:22Speaker 2: making the trip down here. So yeah, you guys, so
- 34:25Speaker 2: so you're still working in Detroit, but you've got this
- 34:28Speaker 2: the Bugsy's baits is your side hustle? Is that right? Yes, sir,
- 34:31Speaker 2: I've had it for about eight or nine years now, Chris,
- 34:34Speaker 2: I work for an automotive company, as you know. Christs
- 34:37Speaker 2: were headquarters which is called Stallanis. I got almost thirty
- 34:39Speaker 2: one years there. But I love doing the fishing ower business.
- 34:42Speaker 2: We've got a various assortment of baits to cover pretty
- 34:46Speaker 2: much any cadence that you might want to use. You know. Yeah,
- 34:50Speaker 2: we got a lot of drop shot baits, got a
- 34:53Speaker 2: lot of creature baits if you want to throw a jig.
- 34:55Speaker 2: We got some swim baits over there. Took a lot
- 34:58Speaker 2: of pride in adding the trick worms. You got a
- 35:00Speaker 2: sixth sense an eight eight inch trick worm that we
- 35:02Speaker 2: had last season. I think he saw some of those
- 35:05Speaker 2: that some of the shows last year. But any any
- 35:09Speaker 2: techniques the guys are used around here on the rivers
- 35:12Speaker 2: and lakes, we pretty much got it covered. Trying to
- 35:14Speaker 2: trying to caters who are West Virginia crew. We got
- 35:18Speaker 2: Rob here with us Rob Cherrypica. We got Will Diffinball,
- 35:21Speaker 2: we got Dustin and Bowhall in which you know all
- 35:23Speaker 2: those guys and of course they've all been on the
- 35:26Speaker 2: show with me. Yeah, they've all been on the show.
- 35:28Speaker 2: We got Dana Brown two, who's heads up the Youth Nation.
- 35:31Speaker 2: We don't put him on the show. That's okay, that's
- 35:34Speaker 2: not true. We have had Dana on before. How do
- 35:37Speaker 2: you come up with the designs?
- 35:38Speaker 9: Is it?
- 35:39Speaker 2: Is it a collective of all these guys that you
- 35:41Speaker 2: just mentioned. Did they put their heads together with this
- 35:43Speaker 2: or is it out of your brain? How's it work?
- 35:45Speaker 2: At little of both. I kind of throw the ideas
- 35:47Speaker 2: out there and try to see if it fits their
- 35:50Speaker 2: fishing techniques and their cadence and you know how they
- 35:53Speaker 2: use the baits, and you know, you got to fine
- 35:56Speaker 2: tune it. You know, you got to really know the
- 35:59Speaker 2: streams and the rivers and the lakes and the water
- 36:02Speaker 2: clarity for you know, for the for the colors that
- 36:05Speaker 2: we got to choose that will work. I mean, if
- 36:07Speaker 2: you come to show and I don't have the collors
- 36:09Speaker 2: that you normally use, you're not obviously going to buy
- 36:11Speaker 2: a product. So we have to spend a lot of
- 36:13Speaker 2: time trying to figure all that stuff out amongst all
- 36:15Speaker 2: those guys. Plus, you know, a normal customer that comes
- 36:19Speaker 2: in you know, I asked them what you use. You know,
- 36:22Speaker 2: I put that in the back of my mind, so
- 36:24Speaker 2: I may add or delete a caller just to substitute
- 36:27Speaker 2: it out. So I've got that covered, you know. Yeah.
- 36:29Speaker 2: How how is the how is the development of these?
- 36:32Speaker 2: I mean, when you how do you come up with
- 36:34Speaker 2: a new color or a new combination of flakes and collars? Well,
- 36:37Speaker 2: basically we try to figure out how much flash we
- 36:40Speaker 2: want in it. And and usually, Chris, when I look
- 36:43Speaker 2: at callers, you know, there's bright fluorescent collars, there's dark collars,
- 36:49Speaker 2: and there's your flashy colors, and then there's of course white, Okay,
- 36:53Speaker 2: and white, it's a whole different animal. I'm of the
- 36:56Speaker 2: opinion that white is probably universal. You can use it
- 36:59Speaker 2: in any applicant with any bait, because it's the most
- 37:02Speaker 2: natural color I think it is, and it works in
- 37:04Speaker 2: the really cold temperatures as well. Right, And you'll find
- 37:06Speaker 2: most anglers don't really have a whole lot of white
- 37:09Speaker 2: in their tackle box. So we try to put that
- 37:12Speaker 2: out there in front of them and tell them that
- 37:13Speaker 2: they need white or some version of white, smoky or
- 37:17Speaker 2: an off white or an ivory or something like that.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I mean, if you look at the if you look
- 37:23Speaker 2: at what fish feed on, there's there's some variation of
- 37:27Speaker 2: white in it. Correct. So that's why I've always been
- 37:30Speaker 2: of the opinion and I mean I don't catch a
- 37:32Speaker 2: lot of fish, but I've always been of the opinion
- 37:34Speaker 2: that you're probably your odds are better if you if
- 37:37Speaker 2: you're working something white. Yeah, you'll not had this conversation before.
- 37:41Speaker 2: But uh, the the flash. Sometimes the flashy collars are
- 37:45Speaker 2: too flashy. The dark colors are too dark, okay, and
- 37:49Speaker 2: and and basically white. Like I said, it's the safest
- 37:53Speaker 2: collar and it works in almost any lake, any stream,
- 37:57Speaker 2: any river well, and flash depends on the mood of
- 37:59Speaker 2: the I mean, you know, early morning low light conditions
- 38:02Speaker 2: are a lot different than bluebird skies in the middle
- 38:05Speaker 2: of the day when the sun's out bright. I mean,
- 38:07Speaker 2: those fish are going to be low, you know, under something.
- 38:09Speaker 2: So we try to figure out how much flake we
- 38:11Speaker 2: want in it. Do we want to do a two
- 38:13Speaker 2: collar laminate? I very seldom try to stay away. I
- 38:18Speaker 2: probably should rephrase that. Most of the time I stay
- 38:20Speaker 2: away from a three collar laminate because it just gets
- 38:23Speaker 2: too busy, you know. Yeah, we've now dived way too
- 38:26Speaker 2: technical into into the bait building business that everybody's going,
- 38:30Speaker 2: what are they talking about? Yeah, we were talking about
- 38:31Speaker 2: three color laminates. So we'll cut it off right there.
- 38:35Speaker 2: But if folks want to come by, what is the
- 38:37Speaker 2: price of a pack of your baits? So what we
- 38:39Speaker 2: offer Chris is a many bulk pack of baits and
- 38:43Speaker 2: they're twelve dollars a pack. But if you want to
- 38:46Speaker 2: take a whole handful, we do six packs for sixty bucks.
- 38:49Speaker 2: We give you a deal. And most of the packs
- 38:51Speaker 2: have either a twenty count in them or a fifteen count,
- 38:54Speaker 2: so it's a really good value and they're pretty durable.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I mean there's some of these fancy baits you buy
- 38:59Speaker 2: and one fig it's done, and you only bought you
- 39:01Speaker 2: only got like six in the pack, and it was
- 39:03Speaker 2: like twenty bucks. Yeah, a little better deal there, purpose
- 39:08Speaker 2: stay away from that. We want the baits to hold
- 39:10Speaker 2: up and catch at least anywhere from four to eight
- 39:13Speaker 2: fish per bait. Story about that. We were talking to
- 39:16Speaker 2: the fella from Canada here a moment ago when I
- 39:18Speaker 2: went up there fishing. We had one color of a
- 39:21Speaker 2: bait that they were really tearing up, and we only
- 39:25Speaker 2: had one pack of them pink. No, they were actually
- 39:28Speaker 2: like a Chartrou's green, like a really bright kneon green.
- 39:31Speaker 2: And literally we were down to that pack. We used
- 39:35Speaker 2: every bait in there, and we were literally down to
- 39:37Speaker 2: putting just a speck of it on the tip of
- 39:41Speaker 2: the hook and still getting bites. In fact, once I
- 39:44Speaker 2: saw that one had gotten off and was about three
- 39:46Speaker 2: feet of water, I got out of the boat and
- 39:48Speaker 2: went down and got it and brought it back up.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So the next time we went back to Canada, my
- 39:52Speaker 2: son Hank and I we went to Kabela's and I
- 39:55Speaker 2: guess we bought fifteen of those fifteen packs of those
- 39:58Speaker 2: spent a fortune. They didn't touch them, They didn't get
- 40:02Speaker 2: a bite on any of them. There was just that
- 40:04Speaker 2: day it was the right bait at the right time,
- 40:06Speaker 2: and that's sometimes how it works. Yes, so you got
- 40:08Speaker 2: to have them covered. Yeah, Buggsy, it's good to see you, buddy,
- 40:11Speaker 2: and stop buy and see him. He's actually right here
- 40:13Speaker 2: in the Bullpen of the West Virginia d in our
- 40:15Speaker 2: stage right over to the side. And you guys for
- 40:17Speaker 2: the Youth Outdoor Challenge, you all are the booth where
- 40:20Speaker 2: the kids come and do the casting arm of that yes,
- 40:23Speaker 2: and it was really really busy yesterday. We saw so
- 40:25Speaker 2: many kids and we actually ran into a lot of
- 40:28Speaker 2: kids and never picked up a fishing rod or a
- 40:29Speaker 2: real whatever. So we're going great. Buggsy always good to
- 40:33Speaker 2: see you. My friend Chris, he has Buggy from Buggsy's Baits.
- 40:37Speaker 2: We got to take a break. We got more. We're
- 40:38Speaker 2: coming up on five eighty double do cchs.

- 44:24Speaker 2: Chad's the auctioneer and I'll be the MC of that event,
- 44:26Speaker 2: so we really look forward to that. Bring your checkbook
- 44:29Speaker 2: or your credit card because there's a lot of really
- 44:31Speaker 2: nice guns to bit on there. The auction is always
- 44:34Speaker 2: a fantastic place to get yourself a good deal on
- 44:36Speaker 2: some of the trips you might be talking to outfitters
- 44:38Speaker 2: about here this weekend. Ask your outfitter if they are
- 44:41Speaker 2: an auction donor, and if they are, you might be
- 44:44Speaker 2: able to get the trip that you're talking about for
- 44:46Speaker 2: a significantly reduced price, and then all of the proceeds
- 44:49Speaker 2: will go to outdoor youth education and conservation. That's the
- 44:52Speaker 2: way the charity auction works. Speaking of charity, the Poker
- 44:57Speaker 2: River Hunting and Fishing Club, Chris Withrow is with today.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Chris are you man?
- 45:01Speaker 4: I'm great, Chris, how are you?
- 45:02Speaker 2: Good morning? I am well. You you were adamant about
- 45:05Speaker 2: wanting to talk about the PoCA River Hunting and Fishing Club.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Tell me a little bit about that.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Well. We are a family oriented campground, hunting, fishing, recreation club.
- 45:17Speaker 4: We're really excited about our reservation over there over in Poku,
- 45:23Speaker 4: which is right out the end of DuPont Road, and
- 45:27Speaker 4: we have everything an outdoorsman would like to have for
- 45:30Speaker 4: the whole family.
- 45:31Speaker 2: What is the history of this is? Was this a
- 45:33Speaker 2: club back for one of the chemical companies?
- 45:35Speaker 9: It was?
- 45:36Speaker 4: It was the old DuPont employees okay club, and it
- 45:40Speaker 4: did turned over to an employee or a member's only club.
- 45:45Speaker 4: So we have just a wonderful place out there. We have, really, Chris,
- 45:49Speaker 4: we have probably the best long range rifle shoot.
- 45:55Speaker 2: How long is it?
- 45:55Speaker 4: Six over six hundred and thirty yards?
- 45:57Speaker 2: I could have used that. A couple of months ago.
- 45:59Speaker 2: I was looking for a place to get sighted in
- 46:02Speaker 2: at three hundred I couldn't find one. Well, couldn't you
- 46:05Speaker 2: know where to find it? Now we certainly have that.
- 46:07Speaker 4: We have a pistol range, really nice pistol range. We
- 46:10Speaker 4: have skeet shooting range as well, and for the whole family,
- 46:15Speaker 4: we have we have a two hundred and fifty thousand
- 46:18Speaker 4: gallon swimming pool and everything else that you would see
- 46:20Speaker 4: in a campground. We have five lakes that we stocked
- 46:23Speaker 4: with trout and catfish throughout the year and have a
- 46:25Speaker 4: lot of fun activities for the family and the outdoors.
- 46:28Speaker 4: We've got a new archery range.
- 46:31Speaker 2: So if you're you have to be a member to
- 46:32Speaker 2: take advantage of all these amenities.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Absolutely. Now, once a year we have a membership drive.
- 46:38Speaker 4: This year it's June seventh, which is open to the public,
- 46:41Speaker 4: so you can come out and enjoy it and see
- 46:43Speaker 4: everything that we have. But yeah, it's a members only.
- 46:47Speaker 4: We've got a booth set up over here, and we
- 46:49Speaker 4: would love to talk to anybody. If someone's interested in
- 46:52Speaker 4: becoming a member and bringing their family, we'd love to
- 46:54Speaker 4: have them out there.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Can you what if you wanted to if you were
- 46:57Speaker 2: a member, can you have say a reunion or a
- 47:00Speaker 2: party or something there kind of have.
- 47:03Speaker 4: We have an indoor facility that we rent out, shelters
- 47:06Speaker 4: that we rent out. We UH have the opportunity for
- 47:11Speaker 4: anybody to come in and again if you're a member,
- 47:14Speaker 4: UH and say your child wants to bring a couple
- 47:16Speaker 4: of people over to the pool this summer. We have
- 47:18Speaker 4: a really small fee for guests. You can bring gas
- 47:21Speaker 4: in as long as you're there with them. It's a
- 47:23Speaker 4: wonderful place. We also have forty eight long term camper
- 47:27Speaker 4: spots that you're able to sign up for. It's a
- 47:31Speaker 4: it's a great family fund.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Kind of like a retreat. You know, you've had enough
- 47:36Speaker 2: of Charleston for the week and and you want to
- 47:38Speaker 2: go out there to spend the weekend out there doing
- 47:41Speaker 2: those kinds of activities.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Absolutely, absolutely, it's a wonderful place to come out and
- 47:45Speaker 4: enjoy the summer.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Okay, what is the what is the cost to be
- 47:49Speaker 2: a member? And are there various degrees of membership them
- 47:52Speaker 2: is the individual versus family or in order.
- 47:54Speaker 4: To get the pool the whole shooting match, and also
- 47:58Speaker 4: that one of the mentioned. We have five hundred acres
- 48:01Speaker 4: that you can ride on side by side, nature, walk, hunt,
- 48:04Speaker 4: whatever you want to do. But it's four twenty five
- 48:08Speaker 4: for the entire family for the entire year. And then
- 48:11Speaker 4: we have a gun range a range membership which includes
- 48:15Speaker 4: our archery range, and it's one hundred and eighty five
- 48:18Speaker 4: dollars per year. Our our year starts April first and
- 48:23Speaker 4: goes through March thirty first. So yeah, it's it's not
- 48:27Speaker 4: very expensive. With all the things that you get and
- 48:31Speaker 4: and all the things that you can take advantage of
- 48:33Speaker 4: out there, it's it's really a monument a minimum amount.
- 48:37Speaker 2: So yeah, if you're shooting enthusiasm that range membership, I mean,
- 48:39Speaker 2: you're gonna not gonna find anything like that around here.
- 48:41Speaker 4: You're not gonna find anything.
- 48:42Speaker 2: And and it's maintained, I suppose that the shooting points.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Are very well. We'll absolutely maintained. We have one of
- 48:48Speaker 4: our board members that that absolutely loves that range. We
- 48:51Speaker 4: it's all covered, got nice shooting benches, it's always maintained mode.
- 48:56Speaker 2: We need it.
- 48:57Speaker 4: Targets are good. It's a really nice place if you
- 48:59Speaker 4: like to shoot. You really want to come out and
- 49:02Speaker 4: check it out.
- 49:02Speaker 2: It's the Poker River Hunting Fishing Club. Stop by and
- 49:04Speaker 2: talk to him. They got a booth here and buy
- 49:06Speaker 2: a chance on that side by side there giving away
- 49:08Speaker 2: as well. So good to see you, Chris. Thanks for
- 49:10Speaker 2: coming by, all right, Chris Withrow with a Poker River
- 49:12Speaker 2: Hunting Fishing Club. Let's shift gears right. You're not Ryan
- 49:18Speaker 2: David Walls is with us. I was supposed to have
- 49:20Speaker 2: Ryan on next, but you had to pinch it for Ryan.
- 49:23Speaker 2: David Walls with Ridge Runner Rods is with us. Ain't
- 49:25Speaker 2: doing man? All right? You posted a picture on Facebook
- 49:28Speaker 2: the other day of your shop which is actually inside
- 49:31Speaker 2: your house. Yeah, it's actually across the street. Now we've
- 49:34Speaker 2: got to We just opened up January one. Oh okay,
- 49:36Speaker 2: I didn't realize that. I thought this was your your basement,
- 49:39Speaker 2: So that that's the shop? Then how about that seven
- 49:43Speaker 2: square feet? I was proud to see a radio in there.
- 49:45Speaker 2: I'll tell you that that's old schools. Yeah, yeah, you
- 49:49Speaker 2: had the had the radio in there it and it's
- 49:51Speaker 2: a place where you custom build rods. I had no
- 49:54Speaker 2: idea how how versatile you can be with this.
- 49:57Speaker 20: You can.
- 49:58Speaker 2: You can get a guy a rod or a galla
- 50:01Speaker 2: rod that is really special and is really personalized to
- 50:05Speaker 2: their their taste as far as what they wanted the rod,
- 50:08Speaker 2: but also the markings on it. Yes, dude, just about anything,
- 50:12Speaker 2: any type of collar decals. The nude. Big thing now
- 50:16Speaker 2: is memorial rods getting it, you know, with a decal
- 50:20Speaker 2: of the birth and the date or believe it or not,
- 50:24Speaker 2: we're putting ashes in it really so someone's creamated. You
- 50:27Speaker 2: can either put the ashes inside the rod or actually
- 50:30Speaker 2: in the epoxy. How about that? So I had you
- 50:33Speaker 2: make one for me earlier this year, my friend Randy Mays.
- 50:37Speaker 2: It was the baseball coach at WVU is a huge
- 50:39Speaker 2: fly fisherman, and when he retired, I had you make
- 50:41Speaker 2: one for him with and it had the flying WV
- 50:44Speaker 2: and it had some baseballs on it and his name
- 50:47Speaker 2: and it was it was a nineweight fly rod, which
- 50:50Speaker 2: I did some recon on that from his wife and
- 50:52Speaker 2: found out that was the one rod weight he did
- 50:55Speaker 2: not have. Right, boy, he was pretty excited and he
- 50:57Speaker 2: sent me a picture of a fish he had caught
- 50:59Speaker 2: with it. He was pretty excited about that rod. Really
- 51:02Speaker 2: nice and that's the success stories we like hearing. Yeah,
- 51:05Speaker 2: when they catch them. How do you where do the
- 51:07Speaker 2: materials come from? Where do the blanks come from? How
- 51:10Speaker 2: much of this do you actually build in Taye Valley?
- 51:13Speaker 2: And how much comes from you know, a raw materials
- 51:16Speaker 2: that you bring in. Most of my stuff is pre
- 51:20Speaker 2: built raw materials. I've got five different distributors. You've got
- 51:24Speaker 2: some that is actually still here in the United States,
- 51:27Speaker 2: but a lot of it is import and then we
- 51:30Speaker 2: just assemble everything that we get. It's really a complex
- 51:35Speaker 2: thing to do if you have the raw materials. E.
- 51:39Speaker 2: P H challenges things like that. Sure, sure, Well, when
- 51:42Speaker 2: we think about known names in the rod business, Saint Croix,
- 51:47Speaker 2: ge Loomis, you know some of those bigger names, those
- 51:50Speaker 2: higher end products, are these along that level? Those are
- 51:56Speaker 2: these are high end rods basically the same stuff that
- 51:59Speaker 2: you would buy in those in those range. Right, The
- 52:02Speaker 2: minks that we buy is blanks that are made for us.
- 52:06Speaker 2: But we can get g Loomis blanks, St. Corey blanks.
- 52:09Speaker 2: We can build on exact same thing. All we would
- 52:12Speaker 2: be doing is curtelling it to your needs. Yeah, the
- 52:14Speaker 2: type of handling, it's custom made. It's custom made, the
- 52:17Speaker 2: type of grips you want, the type of Uh, if
- 52:20Speaker 2: you want it to be a certain length, that's custom
- 52:23Speaker 2: where you can't go in a big box store and
- 52:25Speaker 2: get that. So that's what we do for people. Yeah,
- 52:27Speaker 2: and uh, what's the average price of one of these?
- 52:30Speaker 2: When you're looking at that average but rod right now,
- 52:33Speaker 2: like I've got show specials over here and stuff. You're
- 52:36Speaker 2: looking at one oh nine to one fifty or an
- 52:39Speaker 2: average bass rods something like that. Wow, trout Rod's a
- 52:41Speaker 2: little bit cheaper. Fly rods are usually a little bit
- 52:44Speaker 2: more because they are longer, a little bit more finesse,
- 52:47Speaker 2: even for the even for those high end blanks like
- 52:49Speaker 2: Loomis and Saint Croixlumus. Now, if you want a high
- 52:51Speaker 2: end blank, it all depends upon what I can get
- 52:53Speaker 2: the blank for. If they are cheaper, we don't. We
- 52:56Speaker 2: don't try to gouge a person. We keep at savings
- 52:59Speaker 2: for you. Sure, I got you so? And how would
- 53:02Speaker 2: they you have the booth here at the Hunting Fishing Show.
- 53:04Speaker 2: They can just come by and talk to you and
- 53:05Speaker 2: see the various ones. And like you said, it could
- 53:07Speaker 2: be a bass rod, it could be a trout rod,
- 53:09Speaker 2: it could be a fly rod. You have all of them,
- 53:12Speaker 2: got them all, catfish, muskie, we do deep sea fishing rods. Wow,
- 53:16Speaker 2: so we do the whole gamut. Stop buy and see him.
- 53:19Speaker 2: It's called Ridge Runner Rods. And David Walls is his name,
- 53:23Speaker 2: and he does really good work. I can attest to
- 53:25Speaker 2: that he's done something for me. Dave good. See you man,
- 53:26Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. Appreciate time. We've got more to come
- 53:29Speaker 2: right after the news, but we got to take a
- 53:31Speaker 2: break and be back at the Charleston Coliseuma Convention Center
- 53:34Speaker 2: on five ad w CCHS The Voice.
- 53:36Speaker 7: Of Charleston, five ECHSAM ninety six point five Back then
- 53:39Speaker 7: Charleston one oh four point five Cross Lane WRC Media Station.
- 53:45Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too. On five eight WCHS
- 53:54Speaker 1: The Voice of Charleston. This is a special edition of
- 53:57Speaker 1: West Virginia Outdoors Live from the West Virginia Hunting and
- 54:01Speaker 1: Fishing Show. Let's go live to the West Virginia d
- 54:04Speaker 1: NR stage on the Great Hall floor. Here's West Virginia's
- 54:07Speaker 1: Voice of the Outdoors, Chris Lawrence.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Good morning, everybody, Welcome in on five ADWCCHS. We are
- 54:14Speaker 2: live this morning on the stage here at the Charleston
- 54:17Speaker 2: Coliseum and Convention Center for the twenty twenty five West

- 54:23Speaker 2: Even as we come on the air, the doors are opening.

- 54:29Speaker 2: buy and see us. We're going to be on the
- 54:31Speaker 2: air here visiting with a number of the people involved
- 54:33Speaker 2: in the show until noon here on five ed WCHS.
- 54:37Speaker 2: And like I said this morning on West Virginia out Doors,
- 54:39Speaker 2: it is almost a state law now that I cannot
- 54:42Speaker 2: start any broadcast from this event without Glenn Jarrell of
- 54:46Speaker 2: the West Virginia Trophy Hunters Association as guest number one.
- 54:49Speaker 3: How you doing, Buddy, I'm doing great. Thanks again Chris
- 54:52Speaker 3: for coming down. You are the voice the West Virginia
- 54:56Speaker 3: and Fishing boys. Well, I appreciate that Voice of Outdoors.
- 54:59Speaker 3: It's worked out well that I've that I've started every
- 55:01Speaker 3: show with you. They've all come off without a hedge.
- 55:03Speaker 3: So I think that that's the key is to start
- 55:05Speaker 3: with you absolutely, And I want to tell you, Chris,
- 55:07Speaker 3: you did a great job yesterday. I just talked to
- 55:09Speaker 3: one of the vendors that I came in to your
- 55:11Speaker 3: legs who sells the saucy Oh yeah, he sold out
- 55:14Speaker 3: yesterday evening.
- 55:15Speaker 4: He cooked all night.
- 55:16Speaker 2: Wow, so he's got the meat case again.
- 55:20Speaker 3: I bought.
- 55:21Speaker 2: I bought a pack from him. That was my supper
- 55:23Speaker 2: last night, A pack of those snacksticks with the cheddary.
- 55:25Speaker 2: You can't beat those. And if you like the hot
- 55:27Speaker 2: stuff is Alipino. I'm told is that's not me but
- 55:29Speaker 2: the Jalipino. He has that as well, and it's pretty good.
- 55:32Speaker 2: So yesterday we got things started to Saturday is always
- 55:36Speaker 2: the big day here. People have been cooped up for
- 55:39Speaker 2: the past what two weeks with ice and snow. We
- 55:42Speaker 2: finally got some good weather and it's a great opportunity
- 55:45Speaker 2: to come out and spend the day with the family
- 55:47Speaker 2: here in an event that will probably have something for everybody.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 55:51Speaker 3: What we do have, like I say, we had the
- 55:54Speaker 3: food here. We have outfitter from all over the all
- 55:57Speaker 3: over the place. If you want to book a bear
- 55:59Speaker 3: hunt from can of the guys are here if you
- 56:01Speaker 3: want to book a elk hunt anal punt. The Western
- 56:05Speaker 3: guys are well represented. We have fishing captains from the
- 56:08Speaker 3: Great Lakes if you want to do any kind of
- 56:10Speaker 3: fishing of whitewater.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Ever, what it's here and exactly now I want to
- 56:14Speaker 2: bring into the fold here a new voice from the show,
- 56:18Speaker 2: and that's Tyler Roebuck.
- 56:20Speaker 7: Is that?
- 56:20Speaker 2: Do I say that correctly? Tyler roe Beck Roebeck? Tyler Roebeck.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Now he's also with the Trophy Hunters Association. And you
- 56:27Speaker 2: are you in charge of the white Tail Hall of Fame?
- 56:29Speaker 2: Are you just the last one hired and they sent
- 56:31Speaker 2: you over here?
- 56:32Speaker 5: I was the voluntold manager of the Whitetael Hall of Fame.
- 56:37Speaker 2: The volunt told it's interesting too, Glenn, that the Trophy
- 56:40Speaker 2: Hunters unlike other organizations in this state. I mean, you
- 56:43Speaker 2: all obviously are a conservation organization as well, but this
- 56:47Speaker 2: is your all's thing is to put this show on
- 56:49Speaker 2: and then the proceeds go to hunting and fishing, a
- 56:53Speaker 2: conservation as well as youth outdoor education.
- 56:55Speaker 3: Absolutely after we pay Oliver Bill's all the profit goes
- 56:58Speaker 3: to organizations that from outdoor activities. They promote conservation, anything
- 57:04Speaker 3: to do with the outdoors, especially youth education.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Tyler, the Whitetail Hall of Fame. I don't know
- 57:10Speaker 2: if you were around when it was over in the
- 57:12Speaker 2: in a separate room over here in the corner. But
- 57:14Speaker 2: when they rebuilt the Civic Center, it's become part of
- 57:17Speaker 2: the main floor here. It's in the and when you
- 57:19Speaker 2: walk in the door, it's the far left corner. That's
- 57:22Speaker 2: where the White Tail Hall of Fame is. How do
- 57:25Speaker 2: you determine who gets to hang one on the wall
- 57:27Speaker 2: over there?
- 57:29Speaker 5: So there's a point scoring system. It's a minimum point
- 57:34Speaker 5: requirement for archery of one ten and that has to
- 57:38Speaker 5: be officially scored by the West Virginia DNR, and then
- 57:42Speaker 5: one thirty is the minimum for the rifle or gun.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Section. It's interesting too, these were not all killed in
- 57:50Speaker 2: the past year. I mean many of these have been
- 57:52Speaker 2: killed for years.
- 57:52Speaker 5: And then there's some mounts up there that are thirty
- 57:54Speaker 5: thirty five years old and people just keep bringing them
- 57:56Speaker 5: back every year. And as long as you know it's
- 57:58Speaker 5: in the d NR system that it's been scored at
- 58:01Speaker 5: some point, then they're allowed hanging up.
- 58:04Speaker 2: What is the what what do you get for hanging
- 58:08Speaker 2: for for bringing your mount down here and hanging it
- 58:10Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame? Is there a other than
- 58:13Speaker 2: the prestige if your in the Hall of Fame.
- 58:14Speaker 5: There's a few things. The biggest thing is a raffle.
- 58:18Speaker 5: There's a drawing for both the archery and rifle categories
- 58:23Speaker 5: for two hundred and fifty dollars gift card to Cabella's.
- 58:26Speaker 5: You also get a free T shirt and we're giving
- 58:31Speaker 5: away some patches as well.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I got you, I got you, And a lot of guys.
- 58:34Speaker 2: It's the same guys every year bringing their mouths in.
- 58:36Speaker 5: There are some guys that bring the same five six
- 58:38Speaker 5: deer in every year.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 58:39Speaker 5: And every time you bring you know, each head that
- 58:41Speaker 5: you bring in that qualifies you get another opportunity to
- 58:45Speaker 5: win the raffle tickets.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, I'll just point out I don't have
- 58:49Speaker 2: one hanging in there because I haven't. I mean, you
- 58:51Speaker 2: have to meet those minimum requirements. Glenn. You've got like
- 58:55Speaker 2: eight back there, don't you wait.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Probably have to want the car.
- 59:00Speaker 2: The only way I'd ever get one back there. Thirty
- 59:02Speaker 2: seven years we've been doing the show, Glenn. Well, you
- 59:05Speaker 2: all have been doing it, not I but I remember
- 59:08Speaker 2: the first time I came to the show. I lived
- 59:10Speaker 2: in Morgantown and I was not even the West Virginia
- 59:12Speaker 2: Indoors didn't even exist. But I heard about it and
- 59:15Speaker 2: I thought, I want to go another and give give
- 59:17Speaker 2: that a try. It man. I was so impressed and
- 59:19Speaker 2: the way it is run is really cool. And then
- 59:23Speaker 2: eventually as I got the show developed and I came
- 59:26Speaker 2: down and became a vendor, so to speak. The amount
- 59:30Speaker 2: of help that your organization gives to vendors when they
- 59:32Speaker 2: come here, that's talked about on the show circuit all
- 59:36Speaker 2: over the country because a lot of these guys go
- 59:38Speaker 2: from show to show to show and they don't get
- 59:39Speaker 2: the kind of reception and hospitality that you all offer them.
- 59:43Speaker 3: No, Chris, it's just West Virginia hospitality. That's all it is.
- 59:47Speaker 3: We meet them at the door, We try to help
- 59:49Speaker 3: them find out whether their booth is help them take
- 59:52Speaker 3: everything to their booth and set it up. And it

- 1:00:17Speaker 2: look at it.

- 1:00:19Speaker 5: you know, mounts that you need or want people to

- 1:00:33Speaker 2: have to have been killed in West Virginia?
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: Yes, yes, that's another requirement that has to be killed
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: in West Virginia.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: It's the West Virginia Hall of Fame. We get that
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: question quite often. Yeah, exactly. Glenn Jerrell and Tyler Roeback.

- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Welcome back. We're live at the West Virginia Hunting and

- 1:04:21Speaker 2: R stage. The doors are open and the show runs

- 1:04:27Speaker 2: five o'clock, it's the charity auction here on the d
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: in R stage. They've asked me again to be the
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: MC of that. That's always a lot of fun. Auctioneer
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Chad Strickland will be here. They get a lot of
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: great items that you can bid on, including several really
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: nice firearms that you want to check out, and a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: lot of trips that vendors have put up to be
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: auctioned off as well, and all the proceeds go to
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: the Youth Outdoors education and conservation causes. So five o'clock
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: the charity auction here at the show. Back to some
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: of the vendors. We got here one of the most
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: popular booths that you will find, and I don't know
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: how it became that, but it is the Crazy Cucumber.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Katie Varga is in charge of that. How are you, Katie?
- 1:05:08Speaker 15: I'm good. How are you?
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I'm doing well? Now? When did you all come up
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: with the idea of selling pickles at a show like this?
- 1:05:16Speaker 16: We started in twenty fourteen, and our first year would
- 1:05:19Speaker 16: be eleven years ago, and we started here in twenty fifteen.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Gollie, and I mean at some point during the day,
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: at several points during the day, there'll be fourteen deep
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: around your booth over there.
- 1:05:32Speaker 15: That is crat Yep.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: Did that shock you how popular it was?
- 1:05:36Speaker 15: It absolutely has. I mean it was. It was a
- 1:05:38Speaker 15: small dream that's turned into a big dream for.
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: Me and my dad.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Actually really so you and your dad put this together
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: as we start.
- 1:05:44Speaker 15: Yep, me and my dad started together and then it's
- 1:05:46Speaker 15: just grown from there.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Do you make the pickles we do? Where do you
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: get that many cucumbers?
- 1:05:51Speaker 15: Well, you have to wholesale them. From a bunch of places.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: I got you. And how many different varieties of pickles
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: do you sell?
- 1:05:57Speaker 15: We make twenty different kinds.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Can you make them yourself? Yes, in your house in.
- 1:06:02Speaker 15: Our licensed commercial kitchen.
- 1:06:03Speaker 16: Okay, yes, not our house, but yes, we're licensed and
- 1:06:06Speaker 16: have a commercial kitchen.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: I got you. And where are you all? Where's that?
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: Where are you all from?
- 1:06:10Speaker 15: We're out of Johnstown, Ohio?
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: Okay? And we were just talking. I have a cousin
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: who lives in Johnstown who you actually knew. Yeah, that's
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: the most West Virginia thing ever right there. So, and
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: you started this in twenty fourteen. Is this your main
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: gig or do you have another job?
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: No?
- 1:06:24Speaker 15: No, this is my main gig.
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: I actually have a nursing degree as well, and I
- 1:06:28Speaker 16: worked at until twenty seventeen, and then in twenty seventeen
- 1:06:31Speaker 16: I quit, And this is what I've been doing fully
- 1:06:33Speaker 16: since then.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Well, i'll tell you what. As popular as they are,
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: because I have friends who do not hunter fish and
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: their girls and they don't they have no interest in
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: anything here, but they're like, we're coming over to get pickles,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: and they'll just come and get like three or four
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: tubs of those pickles.
- 1:06:48Speaker 16: Oh absolutely, I mean that's what's been great for us.
- 1:06:50Speaker 16: I mean, while this is a hunting and fishing show,
- 1:06:52Speaker 16: we're also appealing to women and children at the same time.
- 1:06:55Speaker 16: And so we're bringing more people in by getting them
- 1:06:58Speaker 16: to come with their husbands and you'll.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: See them walking around just eating pickles. No, I'm not
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: I like pickles, but I don't like them that much.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: But what is the best selling pickle you have?
- 1:07:08Speaker 16: So our number one seller is deal pickle pickle, but
- 1:07:12Speaker 16: I will say down here in West Virginia, everybody loves
- 1:07:14Speaker 16: sweet pickles. So our sweet heat, spicy bread and butter,
- 1:07:17Speaker 16: and bread and butter have been flying off the shelf.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: And how did you come up with all these different
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: recipes and varieties?
- 1:07:24Speaker 16: Just try on air and then like you know, I
- 1:07:27Speaker 16: I see other people make other flavors that you may
- 1:07:29Speaker 16: not have thought of.
- 1:07:30Speaker 15: So we we buy, we test, and we just keep going.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: And what are some of the more unique ones.
- 1:07:36Speaker 16: Well, right now we have a jalapeno line, which is
- 1:07:38Speaker 16: just amazing. Now that one did not make it down
- 1:07:40Speaker 16: here yet this year, but that's like a summertime one.
- 1:07:44Speaker 16: We also have a new one coming out that's sweet
- 1:07:47Speaker 16: with garlic.
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: Wow? Okay, So and what are the are the any
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: unusual ones that that people like? Is their birthday cake
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: pickles or something like that?
- 1:07:57Speaker 16: No, no, there are there are somewhere in the world.
- 1:07:59Speaker 16: I'm sure there like cool a pickles and stuff both.
- 1:08:01Speaker 16: We really haven't dabbled into that yet.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Say you don't do the really odd no, no, no
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: weird ones.
- 1:08:06Speaker 15: We know what everybody likes and that's what we kind
- 1:08:08Speaker 15: of stick with.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: And how do you how many do you bring with
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: you when you come to a show like this?
- 1:08:12Speaker 16: So this show we bought, we brought over one thousand
- 1:08:14Speaker 16: pounds of pickles, Holy can about two hundred buckets?
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: How many shows do you do a year?
- 1:08:19Speaker 15: We set up and sell at over four hundred shows
- 1:08:22Speaker 15: a year.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Holy cal Yeah, that's you're somewhere ever weekend, aren't we are?
- 1:08:26Speaker 15: And sometimes multiple times?
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: When do you find time to make the well during
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: the week.
- 1:08:31Speaker 15: Week we do production on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: What's the furthest you guys travel to sell pickles?
- 1:08:37Speaker 16: Well, this is three hours from our house. We go
- 1:08:40Speaker 16: to the Kentucky State Fair, which is for four and
- 1:08:42Speaker 16: a half hours from our house.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Oh okay, and then it's just kind of a radius
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: that this is about as far as as you go out.
- 1:08:49Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean we would travel, but we've been really
- 1:08:51Speaker 16: blessed with great farmers markets in our area, so those
- 1:08:54Speaker 16: have been really good for us.
- 1:08:55Speaker 15: So that's where we stay at mainly.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I got you, and and you said that you wholesale
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: these are they locally grown there in the Ohio area,
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: because that's that's farm country.
- 1:09:02Speaker 16: So as much as you can, but with cucumbers, you
- 1:09:04Speaker 16: only really get one good season unless you have big greenhouses.
- 1:09:07Speaker 15: So some come from Ohio, some are coming from other places.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: I got you, I got you. Well, Katie Varga is
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: the lady at the Crazy Cucumber. She's the pickle lady,
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: and everybody comes here to grab a pack of pickles.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: And if you're wondering about what a lot of the
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: ladies are doing at the show, they're picking up the pickles.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, thanks so much, because I know, thank you
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: for at least having the time to come up here.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: I wanted to talk to you because it's such a
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: popular booth and an unusual item that is that is
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: sold here. Oh yeah, and I know you're going to
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: be so busy here in about an hour that I
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: couldn't have pulled you away to do it.
- 1:09:40Speaker 15: So thanks for coming up, oh anytime.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Thank you. All right, Katie Varga there from the Crazy Cucumber.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Talk to her. She's the pickle lady. And oh she
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: even has a has a cheering audience out here. I
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: like that. Let's shift gears now to a guy who
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: has not got an audience. Bobby Bauer Pro River Outfitters.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: What are you doing man?
- 1:09:56Speaker 17: Well, I'm thinking about having some pickles for breakfast, you know,
- 1:10:00Speaker 17: before it gets too busy. It's pretty amazing how many
- 1:10:03Speaker 17: people line up to get pickles. It really is a
- 1:10:05Speaker 17: pretty constant flow of pickle people by the booth all
- 1:10:08Speaker 17: day every day. So if you guys want pickles, you
- 1:10:10Speaker 17: better come get them quick.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: When I when I have to leave the booth to
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: go out to the lobby, I try to take another
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: route because you can't get by the pickle booth there's
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: too many people, and by Sunday mid day the floor
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: is so sticky that day you kind of get stuck there.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: I think they might have that as part of their marketing.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Employee get the sticky people can't get by. They got
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: to spend their money. Before they keep moving. Now you're
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: you're telling tales out of school.
- 1:10:32Speaker 17: Now imagine that. I mean, I'm a fishing guy. You know,
- 1:10:35Speaker 17: thinks that you know, by tomorrow will be a whole
- 1:10:38Speaker 17: new story.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: How how was your year last year? Did you catch
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: a lot of fish? It was out of sight?
- 1:10:42Speaker 17: You know, we had really really low water. It was
- 1:10:45Speaker 17: super clear, and you know, we like the we like
- 1:10:50Speaker 17: the low water.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: It was amazing.
- 1:10:51Speaker 17: It was probably the best numbers I've had in the
- 1:10:54Speaker 17: last decades. So you know, the spawns have been good,
- 1:10:57Speaker 17: and the New River is is on fire. The a
- 1:11:01Speaker 17: lot of small fish, so that's good because they're getting bigger.
- 1:11:04Speaker 17: So it was one of the better days with better
- 1:11:06Speaker 17: years we've had.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: We obviously talk a lot about smallmouth on the New
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: River because that is the species that draws people in,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: but we would be remiss if we didn't talk about
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the work that has been done to bring along the walleyes.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: The walleye fishing is on points.
- 1:11:20Speaker 17: It's hard to go out and just target walleye except
- 1:11:23Speaker 17: for it in the spring and things are below sandstone
- 1:11:27Speaker 17: falls or kanal falls where their spawning grounds are. But
- 1:11:30Speaker 17: you know, we're catching big walleye on a regular basis.
- 1:11:33Speaker 17: So you know, although we're hunting hunting small mouth, you know,
- 1:11:37Speaker 17: we're hooking up some nice walleye and they're getting to
- 1:11:39Speaker 17: be you know, a twenty two twenty four inch walleye
- 1:11:42Speaker 17: is not that uncommon now.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Done a lot of studies, a lot of stories on
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: this over the year. Mark Scott, who just retired from
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: the DNR. This was one of his pet projects when
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: he started. But they isolated a gene. The smart guys
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: at Virginia Tech and their their wildlife and fisheries, some
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: researchers figured out that there is a gene that is
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: unique to the New River that had had largely been
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: lost and on what was here now was the new
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: was the Lake Erie strain, and those aren't nearly as hardy.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: But once they were able to isolate that particular gene
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: and replicate it and then suddenly reproduce them, what they
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: found was that those walleyes in the New River and
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: that New River strain, they grow so much faster and
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: they're so much more aggressive. So in two or three
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: years you're gonna have an eighteen to twenty four inch
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: walley it's gonna tear your arm off.
- 1:12:30Speaker 17: Yeah, it's awesome. I've followed Mark's projects since the since
- 1:12:34Speaker 17: the he had introduced it years ago, and it's it's worked.
- 1:12:38Speaker 17: It's really neat that they brought those fish back. And yeah,
- 1:12:42Speaker 17: they grow quick and they fight a lot harder than
- 1:12:45Speaker 17: normal walleye typically catch one.
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: It fights for a second. But these things are kind
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: of scrappy. Yeah, you along with the guidework that you do,
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: your main business is really selling rafts. Yeah, I design
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: and manufacture rafts.
- 1:12:59Speaker 17: We do have a warehouse in Fayetteville, Oakhill area, so
- 1:13:03Speaker 17: where a company called Rocky Mountain Rafts. We have about
- 1:13:06Speaker 17: ten of us now working in West Virginia. We migrated
- 1:13:09Speaker 17: from Colorado to West Virginia and going really well. I've
- 1:13:14Speaker 17: got one of my brand new rafts that just came
- 1:13:16Speaker 17: out this week. So this is the first showing of
- 1:13:18Speaker 17: the new Flow one thirty two fishing boat. It's like
- 1:13:23Speaker 17: half the price of most of the competitors. We're gonna
- 1:13:27Speaker 17: turn it upside down. It's a neat boat. The people
- 1:13:30Speaker 17: have been super psyched about it.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: One of the things that's really important when you're fishing,
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: at least on a float trip is comfort as opposed
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: to the white water guys. It's the ideas to get wet, yeah,
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: and to stay dry is the idea when you're fishing.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: What kind of modifications do you make to the rafts
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: to make sure that those are the two goals that
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: are met. Yeah.
- 1:13:49Speaker 17: This boat that we have at the show, the new raft,
- 1:13:52Speaker 17: it has a drop stitch floor, so if you know
- 1:13:55Speaker 17: what a stand up paddle board is, it's a solid
- 1:13:57Speaker 17: inflatable piece, so really easy to hand on, a really
- 1:14:01Speaker 17: comfortable We have padded swivel seats. We're into maximum comfort
- 1:14:05Speaker 17: for sure when we're out there fishing.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: Could you spend a bunch of time.
- 1:14:08Speaker 17: We also have stand up paddle bars and kayaks and
- 1:14:11Speaker 17: inner tubes that you can snow or snow or float
- 1:14:14Speaker 17: and you.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Know, kind of a full line of products. Well, and
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: standing up is so important when you're when you're talking
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: about the fishing because it's a lot easier fish standing
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: up that' sit down, particularly if you've got a big
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: one on the line, without a doubt. So the drop
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: stitch floor is just a really stable platform.
- 1:14:31Speaker 17: And we have if you come by the show, the
- 1:14:33Speaker 17: frames have leaning bars and uh, it's very really custom
- 1:14:38Speaker 17: outfitted and real proud of them the price is right
- 1:14:42Speaker 17: as well. So we got a little store up in
- 1:14:44Speaker 17: Faanville and we're selling boats all around. We're really the
- 1:14:47Speaker 17: only raft dealer in the Eastern United States.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: One one final question, how much has the Declaration of
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: the of the Park and Preserve from what it was
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: to become an actual National parking Preserve. How much difference
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: is that made in the traffic and the people that
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: you've had through there.
- 1:15:02Speaker 17: You know, it's it's brought a lot more people and
- 1:15:05Speaker 17: it's a different kind of crowd than we had, you know.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Ten years ago. I do jipboat tours.
- 1:15:11Speaker 17: I've done a number of different businesses and it's just
- 1:15:16Speaker 17: been amazing. I mean, we have people coming year round now.
- 1:15:20Speaker 17: It's it's It definitely has up the visitation in the
- 1:15:24Speaker 17: New River Gorge area and there's so much to do there.
- 1:15:27Speaker 17: So if you're out though out this summer, come by
- 1:15:30Speaker 17: Pro River Outfitters and we'll hook you up.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: We got all the toys. Sounds good. Bobby Boy, our
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: Pro River Outfitters, stop by and see me. He's actually
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: in the booth just a couple of doors down from

- 1:19:17Speaker 1: Virginia DNR stage on the Great Hall floor to continue
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: the conversation. Here's Chris Lawrence.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Welcome back to the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: A special edition of West Virginia out Doors were live
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: on the show floor. The doors are open here at
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: the Hunting Fishing Show until nine o'clock tonight. Hours tomorrow
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: are ten until five. Twelve dollars is the admission price,
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: but if you're under the age of twelve, you get
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: yourself in free. We continue to talk to several of
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: the vendors on the show floor here. And one of
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: the big draws of this particular event is the opportunity
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: to go hunting or fishing in someplace you've never been before. Fortunately,
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: I've gotten a couple of opportunities to fish in Canada,
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: and Gordon Bowen with Long Point Lodge is one of
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: those guys that can provide you with that opportunity. Gordon's
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: could see them. Man, come up on the mic there
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: a little bit for me. There we go. Where exactly
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: is your camp located? Long Point Lodge.
- 1:20:15Speaker 24: It's about eight hours eight and a half hours straight
- 1:20:17Speaker 24: north of Buffalo.
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: It's seventeen hour drive from here.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: I got you, and so you'd leave early in the morning,
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: you get there late in the evening.
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: Yeah, about seventeen hour drive from.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: How how I remember when I came to Canada and
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: this has been ten fifteen years ago, but there was
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: a lot of people trying to the border is where
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: things slow down because obviously it's a border. How hard
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: is it to get through there? Now?
- 1:20:38Speaker 24: Oh, the border is really simple now as long as
- 1:20:40Speaker 24: you've got your just your passports, there's no problem crossing
- 1:20:44Speaker 24: the border whatsoever. And it's not near as like holiday weekends,
- 1:20:48Speaker 24: yes it's bad. But if a person comes across, like
- 1:20:50Speaker 24: on a Friday, Friday afternoons.
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: And stuff, that's really good.
- 1:20:54Speaker 24: Saturday mornings, it can be a hassle getting across because
- 1:20:56Speaker 24: when people cross, and like most of our guests from
- 1:20:59Speaker 24: down here leave on Friday and drive up and maybe
- 1:21:02Speaker 24: get as far as Toronto stay overnight.
- 1:21:04Speaker 6: But they tried to get across the border on the Fridays.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah do uh. And and I know once
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: you get north of Toronto it starts to get a
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: little less populated up there. Oh yeah.
- 1:21:18Speaker 24: But like if the highways are busier now, like that's
- 1:21:20Speaker 24: the thing, Like it takes a little longer now because
- 1:21:22Speaker 24: there's more trucks on the road, yeah, and more traffic
- 1:21:25Speaker 24: now compared to was say twenty years ago when you came.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Up right now. The one thing was though, I mean,
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: these aren't dirt roads. They're paved. Even even in the
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: middle of nowhere. You got paved roads up there.
- 1:21:34Speaker 24: And now with that new highway around Toronto makes all
- 1:21:37Speaker 24: the difference in the world because years ago, say twenty
- 1:21:39Speaker 24: five years ago, when we used to come down here,
- 1:21:41Speaker 24: these shows people went through Toronto and they just said
- 1:21:44Speaker 24: it was a nightmare, so they would never come back.
- 1:21:46Speaker 24: Now you take that etr that pay highway right as
- 1:21:50Speaker 24: a toll road. Just expensive, but it saved you an
- 1:21:52Speaker 24: hour and you don't even see the city, right.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: And the funny thing is when I did that, they
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: you don't have to. You don't even row, as you're
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: being told. They just send you a bill, they check
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: out your license. And for so many years I kept
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: getting a bill from those folks for two cents, and
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: I kept sending them two cents, and I'd get another
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: bill for two cents. I was like, and finally I
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: was just like, you know what, if you want to
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: come and put me in your Canadian jail for being
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: a dibnor, go ahead. I'm not sending you any more
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: coins through the mail.
- 1:22:21Speaker 24: But the point bad thing is if a person don't
- 1:22:24Speaker 24: pay for these tolls and stuff. Yeah, sometimes if you
- 1:22:26Speaker 24: go across the border, that's all on your passportes because
- 1:22:30Speaker 24: that is an unpaid uh huh. I think same as
- 1:22:33Speaker 24: like now when we come down like on seventy nine
- 1:22:35Speaker 24: or ninety up in Buffalo, before you had stopped, you
- 1:22:39Speaker 24: paid your toll. Now it's electronic, just like it is
- 1:22:42Speaker 24: up at our place, they just send you a bill. Yeah,
- 1:22:44Speaker 24: So if I don't pay that toll, if I go
- 1:22:46Speaker 24: to come back to the States again, I can't cross
- 1:22:49Speaker 24: the border because they got an outstanding.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: Oh geez me, Oh goodness, I may be an outlaw
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: in Canada. I probably I'll check that out. But before
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: I go, tell me a little bit about your about
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: Long Point Lodge. You offer folks and if they're going
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: to come fishing with you, what are they like?
- 1:23:03Speaker 24: We have, like I said, like a hunting and fishing
- 1:23:05Speaker 24: camp as well as family vacations, like we do the
- 1:23:07Speaker 24: spring black bear hunt, and then we do a lot
- 1:23:10Speaker 24: of troupe fishing in the spring. July and August is
- 1:23:13Speaker 24: more family groups. And then we do it like then
- 1:23:16Speaker 24: we got the pike walleyed bass as the weather's better
- 1:23:19Speaker 24: for the families. You don't have the black flies like
- 1:23:21Speaker 24: in July and August like you do in June. Then
- 1:23:24Speaker 24: the fall we have our spring small game season. We
- 1:23:27Speaker 24: have our fall black bear hunt, and then we also
- 1:23:31Speaker 24: have the fall moose hunt. But don't we don't cater
- 1:23:34Speaker 24: to none residents for the moose hunts because we just
- 1:23:37Speaker 24: can't get the tags for the moose hunt I was.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Going to say, how hard are those to get? I
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: figure for moose, they're they're pretty well regulated, aren't.
- 1:23:43Speaker 24: Unit forty where we are is probably the worst one
- 1:23:45Speaker 24: in Ontario to get a tag.
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: Out of them?
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: So do you have a lot of moose there? I
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: mean you do that?
- 1:23:50Speaker 6: We had lost for a long time.
- 1:23:52Speaker 24: And then when they did all the new clear cuts
- 1:23:55Speaker 24: and stuff and with the ATVs and everything, that really
- 1:23:58Speaker 24: hurt the moose population for ten years.
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: But then they change the tag system and it's really
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: brought the moose population back up again. Like I had
- 1:24:07Speaker 6: a right in her yard about three months ago, off
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: and through the yard.
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: That's what the bro sure you need to take the
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: picture of that. You never had the cavern?
- 1:24:17Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: What about the bear? What is the procedure? Do you
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: have to draw for a bear tag? Or are they
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: over the counter? Yes?
- 1:24:23Speaker 24: Over the counter. As soon as you as soon as
- 1:24:25Speaker 24: you buy your bear bear license, that is your that
- 1:24:28Speaker 24: is your tag, okay, and you're you're you're allowed to
- 1:24:32Speaker 24: one bear. And so when the guys come up to
- 1:24:34Speaker 24: our place, they can buy the license online. They can
- 1:24:37Speaker 24: stop at dating store and get their license. And then
- 1:24:39Speaker 24: when you get to our place, then it's just a
- 1:24:41Speaker 24: matter of filling out the paperwork.
- 1:24:43Speaker 6: Because a non resident.
- 1:24:45Speaker 24: Can't just go down the road and shoot a bear anywhere.
- 1:24:47Speaker 24: He can only shoot his bear on my bear management area,
- 1:24:51Speaker 24: like I pay for two hundred and fifty five thousand acres.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: It's the size area that I good, gracious, that's a
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: county here, But I'm.
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: The only one that the only outfitter that can bear
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: bait in that area.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: I was gonna say these are all over bait, I
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: guess because up there the country is so thick it's
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: it'd be difficult to stop one.
- 1:25:11Speaker 24: Like even with dogs. Years ago, we tried with the
- 1:25:14Speaker 24: people brought dogs up. Now nobody allows a dog up
- 1:25:17Speaker 24: there to hunt because ninety percent of the time you
- 1:25:19Speaker 24: guys don't have their dogs.
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: When they're going back home, ye get lost.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: They're still running one hundred miles away. You can see
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: them on the GPS, but you can't get there from here.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: So that's that's that's kind of how it goes. How
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: is the fishing and what are the accommodations when that
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: when you come up where you staying.
- 1:25:33Speaker 24: The fishing usually that I always said best fishing is
- 1:25:36Speaker 24: last week in May, the month of June because the
- 1:25:39Speaker 24: water's cooler and the fish are more aggressive. But the
- 1:25:42Speaker 24: thing is people have got to realize, like with family groups,
- 1:25:45Speaker 24: that's the way you don't have them in June because
- 1:25:47Speaker 24: the black fly season.
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: You know, it's just if you want good fishing.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well that Yeah, the the industrial strength off is
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: like the cologne of the north Woods up there.
- 1:25:57Speaker 24: But then like all the cabins are all all like
- 1:26:00Speaker 24: have everything in them their self. Stuff sook like like,
- 1:26:03Speaker 24: I mean, you've got your electric fridge, you got a shower, inferator, No,
- 1:26:08Speaker 24: no generators, those who hydro electric and stuff.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a deal breaker for the wives. She's like,
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: if I can't take a shower, I'm not going I'm
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: not staying out there for a week with no shower.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: I'm like, well, you could take a bathroom the lake.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: I've done that before.
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: Oh yeah, especially when the power goes off.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a tad cool. You won't stay in there long.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: But but at least you look.
- 1:26:26Speaker 6: At the end of July, our lake temperature gets eighty degrees.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: How's it really? Wow? That's that that's really amazing. And
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: uh and I guess you said it's a pike Walleye
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: and Smallmouth.
- 1:26:36Speaker 24: Or you're that's abdominally what we have, but then we
- 1:26:39Speaker 24: I do have boats on a couple of small lakes
- 1:26:41Speaker 24: for Speckled Troat as well, but we've got boats on
- 1:26:44Speaker 24: like eleven different lakes other than our main lake, so
- 1:26:46Speaker 24: you can go to the different lake every day.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: And that was a great time to go to Canada
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: because the exchange rate on the money, at least if
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: you're an American, a.
- 1:26:54Speaker 6: Dollar forty to a dollar forty five right now.
- 1:26:56Speaker 24: So any holiday you're looking save your holidays, a thousand
- 1:26:59Speaker 24: dollars hall day will take.
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: Forty percent off. Wow, so you're paying your trip, you
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: can leave here and drive all the way up to
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: where we are.
- 1:27:08Speaker 24: You're gasoline and you could get a motel room free
- 1:27:11Speaker 24: your charge with what you're getting on your exchange rate.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Wow. There wasn't like that the last time I went.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: It was the other way around. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: that now now's the time. So if you're looking to
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: go to Canada, now, now's the time to book the
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: trip for sure, for sure, sure, And I don't know
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: if it's going to change between now and the summer
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: when you might go.
- 1:27:30Speaker 24: It doesn't it doesn't go up and down like you
- 1:27:32Speaker 24: don't see it drop like fifteen cents over night sort
- 1:27:35Speaker 24: of deal, like you know, like it takes a long
- 1:27:37Speaker 24: time for it sure, because they could say like this
- 1:27:39Speaker 24: for ten years, you know, right.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Gordon Bow and Long Point Lodge. Check him out.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: He's got fishing and bear hunting in Canada and you
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: can you can talk to him about a trip that'll
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: be a lot of fun. I can promise you you
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: won't regret going up there and trying this out. Gordon's
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: coldn't see you buddy already. All right, take it easy.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Let's shift gears. Now talk to another long time friend
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: of the show. See Gordon Bugsy from Bugsy's Baits is here. Bugsy,
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: how are you man? Doing awesome? Chris, thanks for having
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: me again, old Boon County boy here but now comes
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: to us via Detroit. Yeah, I like making the trip
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: down here. So yeah, you guys, so so you're still
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: working in Detroit, but you've got this the Bugsy's Baits
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: as your side hustle. Is that right, Yes, sir, I've
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: had it for about eight or nine years now, Chris.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: I worked for an automotive company, as you know. Christ
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: were headquarters, which is called the Lands. I got almost
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: thirty one years there, but loved doing the fishing ower business.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: We've got a various assortment of baits to cover pretty
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: much any cadence that you might want to use. You know. Yeah,
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: we got a lot of drop shot baits, got a
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: lot of creature baits if you want to throw a jig.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: We got some swim baits over there. Took a lot
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: of pride in adding the trick worms. You got a
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: six sense an eight inch trick worm that we haded
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: last season. I think you saw some of those at
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: some of the shows last year. But any any techniques
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: the guys are used around here on the rivers and lakes,
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: we pretty much got it covered. Trying to cater sort
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: of West Virginia crew. We got Rob here with us,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Rob Cheripica. We got Will diffin Ball, we got a
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: dust in the bow haul in which you know all
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: those guys and the course they've all been on the
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: show with me. Yeah, they've all been on the show.
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: We got Dana Brown two who's heads up the Youth Nation.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: We don't put him on the show. That's okay, that's
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: not true. We have had Dana on before. How do
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: you come up with the designs?
- 1:29:26Speaker 8: Is it?
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: Is it a collective of all these guys that you
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: just mentioned. Did they put their heads together with this
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: or is it out of your brain? How's it work?
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: At little of both. I kind of throw the ideas
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: out there and try to see if it fits their
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: fishing techniques and their cadence and you know how they
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: use the baits, and you know, you got to fine
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: tune it. You know, you got to really know, uh,
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: the streams and the rivers and the lakes and the
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: water clarity for you know, for the for the callers
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: that we got to choose that will work. I mean,
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: if you come to show and I don't have the
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: callers that you normally use, you're not obviously going to
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: a buy a product. So we have spend a lot
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: of time trying to figure all that stuff out amongst
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: all those guys. Plus you know, a normal customer that
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: comes in. You know, I asked them what you use?
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: You know, I put that in the back of my mind,
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: so I may add or delete a collar just to
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: substitute it out so I've got that coverage, you know. Yeah,
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: how how is the How is the development of these.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: I mean, when you how do you come up with
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: a new color or a new combination of flakes and colors. Well,
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: basically we try to figure out how much flash we
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: want in it. And usually, Chris, when I look at collars,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: you know, there's bright fluorescent colors, there's dark collars, and
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: there's your flashy colors, and then there's of course white, okay,
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: and white, it's a whole different animal. I'm of the
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: opinion that white is probably universal. You can use it
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: in any application with any bait, because it's the most
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: natural color I think it is, and it works in
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: the really cold temperatures as well. Right, And you'll find
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: most anglers don't really have a whole lot of white
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: in their tackle box. So we try to put that
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: out there and one of them and tell them that
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: they need white or some version of white, smoky or
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: an off white or an ivory or something like that.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: I mean, if you look at the if you look
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: at what fish feed on, there's there's some variation of
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: white in it.
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: So that's why I've always been of the opinion, And
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: I mean I don't catch a lot of fish, but
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: I've always been of the opinion that you're probably your
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: odds are better if you if you're working something white. Yeah,
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: you'll not have this conversation before. But uh, the the flash.
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: Sometimes the flashy collars are too flashy. The dark collars
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: are too dark, Okay, And and and basically white. Like
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: I said, it's the safest collar and it works in
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: almost any lake, any stream, any river well, and flash
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: depends on the mood of the fish. I mean, you know,
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: early morning low light conditions are a lot different than
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: bluebird skies in the middle of the day when the
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: sun's out bright. I mean, those fish are going to
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: be low, you know, under something. So we try to
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: figure out how much flake we want in it. Do
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: we want to do a two collar laminate? I very
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: seldom try to stay away. I probably should rephrase that
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: most of the time I stay away from a three
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: collar laminate because it just gets too busy, you know. Yeah,
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: we've now dived way too technical into the bait building
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: business and that everybody's going, what are they talking about? Yeah,
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: we were talking about three color laminates. So we'll cut
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: it off right there. But if folks want to come by,
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: what is the price of a pack of your baits.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: So what we offer Chris is a many bulk pack
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: of baits and they're twelve dollars a pack. But if
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: you want to take a whole handful, we do six
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: packs for sixty bucks. We give you a deal, and
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: most of the packs have either a twenty count in
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: them or a fifteen count, so it's a really good
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: value and they're pretty durable. I mean there's some of
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: these fancy baits you buy and one fish it's done right,
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: and you only bought you only got like six in
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: the pack, and it was like twenty bucks. Yeah, y
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: proch a little better deal there, purpose you stay away
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: from that. We want the baits to hold up and
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: catch at least anywhere from four to eight fish per bait.
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: Story about that. We were talking to the fella from
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: Canada here a moment ago when I went up there fishing.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: We had one color of a bait that they were
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: really tearing up, and we only had one pack of
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: them pink. No, they were actually like a Chartrou's green,
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: like a really bright kneon green, and literally we were
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: down to that pack. We used every bait in there,
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: and we were literally down to putting just a speck
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: of it on the tip of the hook and still
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: getting bites. In fact, once I saw that one had
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: gotten off and was about three feet of water, I
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: got out of the boat and went down and got
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: it and brought it back up. So the next time
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: we went back to Canada, my son Hank and I
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: we went to Cabela's and I guess we bought fifteen
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: of those fifteen packs of those spent a fortune. They
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: didn't touch them, they didn't get a bite on any
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: of them. There was just that day. It was the
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: right bait at the right time, and that's sometimes how
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: it works. Yes, so you got to have them covered. Yeah, Buggsy,
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: it's good to see you, buddy, And stop by and
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: see him. He actually right here in the bullpen of
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: the West Virginia d in our stage right over to
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: the side. And you guys for the Youth Outdoor Challenge,
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: you all are the booth where the kids come and
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: do the casting arm of that. Yes, and it was
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: really really busy yesterday. We saw so many kids and
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: we actually ran into a lot of kids and never
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: picked up a fishing rod or a real whatever. So
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: we're going great, Buggsy, always get to see you my friend.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: Thank you Chris. He has Buggsy from Bugsy's Baites. We
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: got to take a break. We got more. We're coming
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: up on five Eightyle do Cchs. High school basketball season

- 1:37:33Speaker 1: live from the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show. Let's
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: return to the show floor. Here's Chris Lawrence.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: Welcome back to West Virginia Outdoors. We are live at
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: the West Virginia Hunting Fishing Show this morning. Glad to
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: have you along wherever you might be. Hopefully you're in
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: the vehicle making your way down here to come see
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: us today. After the show is over, we're going to
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: be on the air till noon. I'll be in the
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: radio booth that we've got set up over here. When
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: you walk in the door. We're on the far right
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: wall down toward the far right corner, so if you
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: want to come by, I'll be there throughout the weekend.
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: I will be tied up about five o'clock though, on
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: the stage here because the West Virginia Trophy Hunters have
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: their charity auction at that time Chad Strickland and I.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: Chad's the auctioneer and I'll be the MC of that event,
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: so we really look forward to that. Bring your check
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: book or your credit card because there's a lot of
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: really nice guns to bit on there. The auction is
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: always a fantastic place to get yourself a good deal
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: on some of the trips. You might be talking to
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: outfitters about here this weekend. Ask your outfitter if they
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: are an auction donor, and if they are, you might
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: be able to get the trip that you're talking about
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: for a significantly reduced price, and then all of the
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: proceeds will go to outdoor youth education and conservation. That's
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: the way the charity auction works. Speaking of charity, the
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: Poker River Hunting and Fishing Club, Chris Wrow is with
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: us today. Chris, are you man? I'm great, Chris, how
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: are you good morning? I am well. You were adamant
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: about wanting to talk about the Poker River Hunting and
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: Fishing Club. Tell me a little bit about that.
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: Well, we are a family in campground Hunting, Fishing Recreation club.
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: We're really excited about our reservation over there over in Poku,
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: which is right out the end of DuPont Road, and
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: we have everything an outdoorsman would like to have for
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: the whole family.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: What is the history of this is? Was this a
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: club back for one of the chemical companies?
- 1:39:23Speaker 9: It was?
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: It was the old DuPont employees Okay club and it
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: did turned over to an employee or a member's only club.
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: So we have just a wonderful place out there. We have, really, Chris,
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: we have probably the best long range rifle shoot.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: How long is it?
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: Six over six? Hundred and thirty yards.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: I could have used that. A couple of months ago,
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: I was looking for a place to get sighted in
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: at three hundred I couldn't find one. Well, couldn't you
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: know where to find it? Now we certainly have that.
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: We have a pistol range, really nice pistol race. We
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: have skeet shooting range as well, and for the whole family,
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: we have we have a two hundred and fifty thousand
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: gallon swimming pool and everything else that you would see
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: in a campground. We have five lakes that we stocked
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: with trout and catfish throughout the year and have a
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: lot of fun activities for the family and the outdoors.
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: We got a new archery range.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: So if you're you have to be a member to
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: take advantage of all these amenities.
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: Absolutely. Now, once a year we have a membership drive.
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: This year it's June seventh, which is open to the public,
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: so you can come out and enjoy it and see
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: everything that we have, but uh, yeah, it's a members only.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: We've got a booth set up over here and we
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: would love to talk to anybody. If someone who's interested
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: in becoming a member and bringing their family, we'd love
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: to have.

- 1:40:44Speaker 2: if you were a member, can you have say a
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: reunion or a party or something there we have We

- 1:41:05Speaker 4: we have a really small fee for guests. You can
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: bring gas in as long as you're there with them.
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: It's a wonderful place. We also have forty eight long
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: term camper spots that you're able to sign up for.
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: It's a it's a great family funds.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: Kind of like a retreat. You know, you've had enough
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: of Charleston for the week and you want to go
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: out there to spend the weekend out there doing those
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: kinds of activities.
- 1:41:30Speaker 4: Absolutely, absolutely, it's a wonderful place to come out and
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: enjoy the summer.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: What is the what is the cost to be a member?
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: And are there various degrees of membership of them? Is
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: there individual versus family or in order.
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: To get the pool the whole shooting match? And also
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: that I wanted to mention we have five hundred acres
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: that you can ride on side by side, nature walk, hunt,
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: whatever you want to do. But it's four twenty five

- 1:42:07Speaker 4: per year. Our our year starts April first and goes
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: through March thirty first, So yeah, it's it's not very expensive.
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: With all the things that you get and and all
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: the things that you can take advantage of out there,
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: it's it's really a monument a minimum amount.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: So yeah, if your shooting enthusiasm that range membership, I mean,
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: you're gonna not gonna find anything like that around here.
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: You're not gonna find anything.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: And and it's maintained. I suppose that the shooting points
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: are very well.
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: We'll absolutely maintain. We have one of our board members
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: that that absolutely loves that range. It's all covered, got
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: nice shooting benches, it's always maintained, mode we needed, targets
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: are good. It's a really nice place. If you like
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: to shoot, you really want to come out and check
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: it out.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: It's the Poker, River Hunting Fishing Clubs stop buy and
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: talk to him. They got a booth here and buy
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: a chance on that side by side they' giving a
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: way as well. So good to see you, Chris, Thanks
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: for coming by. Take care all right, Chris Withrow with
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: a Poker, River Hunting and Fishing Club. Let's shift gears right.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: You're not Ryan David Walls is with us. I was
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: supposed to have Ryan on next, but you had to
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: pinch it for Ryan. David Walls with Ridge Runner Rods
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: is with us. Ain't doing man? All right? You posted
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: a picture on Facebook the other day of your shop
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: which is actually inside your house. Yeah, it's actually across
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: the street. Now we've got to We just opened up
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: January one. Oh okay, I didn't realize that. I thought
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: this was your your basement, So that that's the shop.
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: Then how about that seven square feet? I was proud
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: to see a radio in there. I'll tell you that
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: it's old schools. Yeah yeah, you had the had the
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: radio in there. It and it's a place where you
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: custom build rods. I had no idea how how versatile
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: you can be with this. You can you can get
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: a guy a rod or a galla rod that is
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: really special and is really personalized to their their taste
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: as far as what they wanted the rod, but also
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: the markings on it. Yes, dud, just about anything. Anytime
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: collar decals the nude. Big thing now is memorial rods
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: getting it, you know, with a decal of the birth
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: and the date or believe it or not, we're putting
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: ashes in it really so someone's creamated. You can either
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: put the ashes inside the rod or actually in the epoxy.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: How about that? So I had you make one for
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: me earlier this year, my friend Randy Mayze. It was
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: the baseball coach at WVU is a huge fly fisherman,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: and when he retired, I had you make one for
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: him with and it had the flying WV and it
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: had some baseballs on it and his name and it
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: was it was a nineweight fly rod, which I did
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: some recon on that from his wife and found out
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: that was the one rod weight he did not have. Right, boy,
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: he was pretty excited and he sent me a picture
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: of a fish he had caught with it. He was
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: pretty excited about that rod. He was really nice. And
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: that's the success stories we like hearing. Yeah, when they
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: catch them. How do you where do the materials come from?
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: Where do the blanks come from? How much of this
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: do you actually build and Tays Valley and how much
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: comes from you know, a raw materials that you bring in.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Most of my stuff is pre built raw materials. I've
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: got five different distributors. You've got some that is actually
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: still here in the United States, but a lot of
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: it is import and then we just assemble everything that
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: we get. It's really a complex thing to do if
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: you have the raw materials E. P. H challenges things
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: like that. Sure, sure, Well, when we think about known
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: names in the rod business, Saint Croix, g Loomis, you
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: know some of those bigger names, those higher end products,
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: are these along that level? Those are these are high
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: end rods basically the same stuff that you would buy
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: in those in those range. Right. The mincs that we
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: buy is blanks that are made for us. But we
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: can get G. Loomis blanks, Saint Croix blanks, we can
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: build on exact same thing. All we would be doing
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: is telling it to your needs. Yeah, the type of handling,
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: so it's custom made, it's custom made, the type of
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: grips you want, the type of Uh, if you want
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: it to be a certain length, that's custom where you
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: can't go in a big box store and get that.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: So that's what we do for people. Yeah, and uh,
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: what's the average price of one of these? When you're
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: looking at that average rod right now? Like I've got
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: show specials over here and stuff, you're looking at one
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: oh nine to one point fifty or an average bass
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: rod something like that. Wow, trout rod's a little bit cheaper.
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: Fly rods are usually a little bit more because they
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: are longer, a little bit more finesse, even for the
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: even for those high end blanks like Loomis and Saint
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: Croia thumbus. Now, if you want a high end blank,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: it all depends upon what I can get the blank for.
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: Uh Huh. If they are cheaper, we don't. We don't
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: try to gouge a person. We keep at savings for you. Sure,
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: I got you so? And how would they You have
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: the booth here at the Hunting and Fishing Show. They
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: can just come by and talk to you and see
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: the various ones. And like you said, it could be
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: a bass rod, it could be a trout rode, it
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: could be a fly rod. You have all of them.
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Got them all catfish, muskie. We do deep sea fishing rods. Wow,
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: so we do the whole gamut. Stop buy and see him.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: It's called Ridge Runner Rods and David Walls is his name,
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: and he does really good work. I can attest to
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: that he's done something for me. Dave good. See you man,
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. Appreciate that we've got more to come
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: right after the news, but we got to take a
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: break and be back at the Charleston Coliseuma Convention Center
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: on five ad w CCHS the Voice.
- 1:47:23Speaker 7: Of Charleston five MEHSAM ninety six point five, then Charleston
- 1:47:27Speaker 7: one oh four point five Cross Lane WRC Media Station.
- 1:47:32Speaker 7: We are proud to live here too.
