- 1:49eight forty nine season, the clipper Craft run over Mutual of Sherlock Holmes ended,
- 1:56but the New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes continued over ABC with Ben Wright taking
- 2:02over the role of Sherlock Holmes. Long time listeners will call that during the
- 2:07Tom Conway era, he filled in for Conway one week Also on ABC,
- 2:14Eric Snowden I played Doctor Watson right of course, was a well known character
- 2:19actor, but he did have a couple of starring roles, this being one
- 2:23of them, and this is a different characterization of Holmes. We only have
- 2:28one episode of this series. This is from March twenty second of nineteen fifty
- 2:35and this one's called The Duke of Hollywell at three Wine brings you the New
- 2:51Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, based on the stories by the late strathur Conan Doyle
- 2:57and featuring Ben Wright as Sherlock Home and Eric Snowdon as Doctor Watson. A
- 3:09true craftsman takes real pride in his product and the Petree family takes great pride
- 3:15in the wine that bears the Petrie name. Ever since the Petree business was
- 3:21founded Waved back in the eighteen hundred, it has always been owned and operated
- 3:25by the Petree family. That's why they've been able to hand on from father
- 3:30to son generations of skill and experience in the art of turning luscious, handpicked
- 3:38grapes into delicious wine. The Petree family took time to bring you good wine.
- 3:45The personal pride of the Petree family is your assurance that every drop of
- 3:51Petree wine is good wine. If you take pride in serving the finest,
- 3:57look for the five letters that spell one of the oldest names in the long
- 4:01history of fine wine. Well, here it is Wednesday night again, and
- 4:13time to keep our weekly doctor's appointment. Good evening, doctor, one evening,
- 4:17mister allan, draw up your usual chair and set of yourself down.
- 4:21That's it, thank you, And now doctor, are you all ready with
- 4:26the night new Sherlock Holmes story. Yes, my boy, it began us
- 4:30so many of our adventures did at our rooms at two twenty one b Bakers.
- 4:34And I suppose it was a foggy November evening at the turn of the
- 4:38century. No, mister Allah, this is a lazy, hot day in
- 4:42August. Through your suggestion as to the period of the story is approximately correct.
- 4:46Holmes and I had just completed a late breakfast. I remember when we
- 4:50heard the sharp sound of horses hoofs approaching along the street outside. I deduced
- 4:57a quiet elementary, my dear boy element See it was a Claire, and
- 5:00a very impressive one too, as we were able to observe. When our
- 5:04visitor stood the forest. He was a distinguished looking man, about fifty five,
- 5:10dressed in the height of statorial elegance. I can almost hear him now
- 5:14as he said, I'm in trouble with Holmes, a very serious trouble.
- 5:18Need your help. That's why I'm here. But then sit down, went
- 5:20to a son, and this is my friend and colleague, doctor one.
- 5:24Oh, how do you do? How do you know? Mister My name
- 5:27is Smith. Don come your grace if you feel it necessary to call here.
- 5:33Are you using an alien Surely you can be a little more inventive than
- 5:36that, your grace, Anti correct and presuming it would be his grace,
- 5:40the Duke of Hollywell, quite correct, amazing, quite extraordinary. I can't
- 5:45see how you knew it. Well, it's really very simply, your Grace.
- 5:47I observed your coach and Paris who arrived us. Now, the distinctive
- 5:50Hollywell monogram on the door of the coach was unmistakable. And when I see
- 5:55the same quest on your couplings and on the golden oup at your cane,
- 5:58and I recall the obsequious way your portman bied you out of the coach,
- 6:00then it required no uncanny parts the deduce that I'm being honored with a personal
- 6:04that it's from the Duke and Kenny positively be uncanny, who very obviously know
- 6:10your true identity. Suppose you tell us your proper it's a bad business,
- 6:15very bad business. If her Grace ever found out about this, my cruise
- 6:18would be cooked because the Duchess is violently jealous, violently When I supposing it
- 6:24was staked, your case, sir, Case, oh oh, Case says
- 6:30it seems funny when you put it that way. Well, here's the thing.
- 6:34In a nutshell, in a very show, we say confidential nutshell.
- 6:40I've been in the street, cabulishly in the street with a with a certain
- 6:44actress in London. Somebody has found out about his un They've been blackmailing made.
- 6:48Have you any idea who that somebody is? No, no homes,
- 6:51But it's somebody who knows my movements. And I've been careful, tabolishly careful,
- 6:57haven't been near the theater a little tougher parties of the show, a
- 7:00cold burden of bottle, you know, really really quite innocent. But I'm
- 7:03afraid the Duchess would would never see it that way. And what form has
- 7:08this blackmail taken? There is notes demanding money and threatening to inform my wife
- 7:14if I don't pay. But here's the funny thing, Homes. No matter
- 7:17how carefully I've chosen an unobtrusive restaurant for our meetings, these notes have been
- 7:23delivered to me by a waiter within half an hour after entering the restaurant.
- 7:27You kept the notes, of course, sir folk could heavens no tore'em
- 7:30up. Far too incriminating to to have the moment. You know, that's
- 7:33not unfortunate, it's very posibly have given a clue to the identity of the
- 7:36cinder. How many notes if you see three three? They've cost me over
- 7:42five thousand pounds, and that they're trying to beat me die. That's what
- 7:46and that's why I've come to you, homes or here's this envelope, it's
- 7:49for you? And then what does it contain? Areas thousand pounds in bank
- 7:55notes yours? If you can find the leaders who are after me where that's
- 7:58a very generous feed by. If I have to take the cake, I'd
- 8:01like some more facts. Now, what is the name of this actress with
- 8:05whom you're inbard? I caught but I couldn't tell you that. Well,
- 8:09how can't my friend help you if he doesn't know the fact. I couldn't
- 8:11mention a woman's name. Shocking, bad form, shocking. Only a beastly
- 8:16cat would do a thing like that. But then, good morning, you're
- 8:18best permit me. You're okay, bro You're okay, you're glad broke,
- 8:22and your thousand facts. I'll see you at the door. Oh well,
- 8:26you'll do mean you'll refuse the case, I do, sir, hmm,
- 8:28mystery at one end of my cases I expect, but at bot them no,
- 8:33But by your best and good luck. Hm, you're an odd fellow.
- 8:37Home is very harder. I don't think I understand who As a matter
- 8:41of fact, A thousand pounds is a thousand pounds in the old But yes,
- 8:45you definitely un understand it. The day you're best well on myself Homely
- 8:50may be the Duke of the Hollywell or whatever it is that I think he's
- 8:54one of the stupidest men I ever met. If he's an art, isn't
- 8:56gil chat Well a thousand pounds and the Duke of Hollywell, no doubt that
- 9:03is the last we shall yell at him, just how stupid. Whilst the
- 9:13Duke I figure your pardon, madam, you walk in here on a nuance.
- 9:18Yes, and it's very obvious you've been following our previous visitor. I
- 9:22have, and I need to. Holly shouldn't be allowed out without a keeper.
- 9:26Holly you mean that, I mean my husband, the Duke of Hollywell.
- 9:31What a ductress. Your sense of logic is inescapable, mister Holmes.
- 9:35You've been following your husband obviously. I waited in a handsome down the street.
- 9:41As soon as I saw him leave, I came up here. Why
- 9:43did Holly come to you, mister Holmes? I'm afraid that professional epics prevents
- 9:46me. He came to you because he was being blackmails didn't he blackmail because
- 9:52it is interesting a certain so called actress at the get at his theater.
- 9:56Well, how much did the upp a thousand? Yes, as a matter
- 10:03of fact, he did. I'll make it two thousands. This is most
- 10:05unusual. I don't think I want to understand your attitude. Now, it's
- 10:09simple enough. I want this blackmailing to stop, and I want Holly to
- 10:13learn a lesson. He's terrified at my finding out the next just the way
- 10:16I want him to remain the heads One good scare will make him a little
- 10:20more amenable in future. That silly old things got to realize that he's no
- 10:26longer the dashing locking arb he was in my days of the theater. Well,
- 10:31mister Holmes, do you undertake the case? Yes, yes, I
- 10:35think I will. It's most intrigued. Your husband was remarkably glut. Yes,
- 10:39you sus to give me the lady's name. I've no such scropeos.
- 10:45The woman is Plurene Clauren la Burne. That's her stage name. She's really
- 10:50Amy Thomas from Brixton. She changed her name and the color of her hair
- 10:54when she left the chorus line at the Gaiety and in what show as she
- 10:58appearing, No, your grace, she's still breath in the French Maid at
- 11:01the Gaiety Theater, and I'm very bad to bread. She is too.
- 11:05She's singing one of my old numbers and singing it atrociously. You think that
- 11:09she's behind the blackmail black Oh, I don't think it, my dear man,
- 11:13I know it. I'm too familiar with the type. She smothered herself
- 11:16in down at this hard at expense, and now she's trying blackmail. Why
- 11:20not go backstage as imaginate this afternoon and see her. We will, you
- 11:24are great, We certainly will good. And don't let those google eyes up
- 11:28hers fool you, doctor Bason. You're looking at me very strangely. Well,
- 11:35you mentioned being in the sater just now. You know you're facing the
- 11:39author familiars. You came in, aren't you? I mean, weren't you.
- 11:46I'm a Victoria, of course I enjoyed seeing you many a china bed.
- 11:52Will watch her famous number you're saying, the same one you'll hear Florine
- 11:56Laverne singing Tonight waiting at the churney is the one? How did it go
- 12:01again, your grace? Well, I hardly expected a thing when I came
- 12:05in here, but I'll see what I can do. There was I waiting
- 12:09at the church, waiting at the church, waiting at the church, wearing
- 12:15I dount to get me in the list. And I don't think she's nearly
- 12:33as good as a duchess. Home. I can't get away to marry you
- 12:39today. My wife like that's her huh. Yes, they were in the
- 13:01wind's watching her. It's hard to believe he's a black man. An,
- 13:07yes, it comes down, miss that down? Oh oh, you gent
- 13:09have been waiting for me? Yes we will. He's like a word with
- 13:13who you don't mind? But please comes my dressing room. I don't think
- 13:18we've met before, have we. I'm generally so awfully good. I'm faces
- 13:24no, always have said. My name is Holmes and this is my old
- 13:26friend doctor one. Oh, how do you do well? Here's my dressing
- 13:31room. Come in, won't you do? Sit down? Mister Holmes.
- 13:43You're not Sherlock Holmes, the detective, are you? Yes, Miss Lavena,
- 13:46I am where. It's mess exciting. My friend's here on business,
- 13:50Miss Love. What could you possibly want with me? I'm here as well?
- 13:54Be etiquette facts. You are a close friend of the Duke of Hollywood,
- 13:58aren't you. I know him. Yes, he's been very kind to
- 14:01me. He sent me to singing teachers, and well, he's almost been
- 14:07like a father to me. I see that I must be fangou. The
- 14:11cladon the information that I have leads me to believe that your relationship with the
- 14:13Duke is very far from paternal. However, I am not a monolist.
- 14:18The reason that I am here is that his grace is being blackmail blackmail me.
- 14:22Yes, mister lavone over you. He's been receiving letters threatening to tell
- 14:26his wife unless money was paid. But why didn't Harry tell me? Oh,
- 14:31the poor boy. You have The reason he didn't tell you, mis
- 14:35lather and is that unconsciously he thinks you may be connected with its blackmailing me.
- 14:39Oh, you're not serious, mister home I am you deny that you
- 14:45receive presents a valuable juris from the Duke? No, but why shouldn't I
- 14:48He admires me. And he's a wealthy man. It's quite customary the ladies
- 14:54in the theater to receive presents from wealthy is madyest, but less mail,
- 15:00mister Holmes. I'm very angry with you. How could you even think such
- 15:03a thing of me, because despite your rather ingenuous manner, you're obviously a
- 15:07Verish food woman. You know that the Duke is not exactly a mental child.
- 15:11We'd be one of the easiest men in England or woodwink and blackmails is
- 15:15the form of foodwinking. Get out of here, punse of you. I'm
- 15:18not gonna sit here any longer being in South. He's gone, Get out,
- 15:26tiger. Get when she drops her mask, doesn't she hear? Ther?
- 15:28Cap We can move no further in this case until we get some concrete
- 15:33facts, and there's only one place we can get them. I mean the
- 15:35Duke, I do We'll call on him at once. Well, well,
- 15:45I'm glad you've changed your mind. Homes are very glad. We've not only
- 15:48done that, your grace, we've actually done some preliminary investigation on the case.
- 15:52Yes, we've just left miss Labourne's dressing room. Oh dear, oh
- 15:56jeremy, Well how did you know it was her? I didn't tell you.
- 16:00Oh, I have my methods and now your grace to business. Business,
- 16:03Oh, oh, year business. I need your co operation, and
- 16:07the only clue you've given me is the fact that these blackmail notes have always
- 16:11been received within half an hour or so if you're keeping a roundebus witness Laven.
- 16:15But oh on earth did you know that you've called? Is that yourself?
- 16:18Your Grace? I don't well, well, go on home, go
- 16:22Have you made any roundevus witness laved and for tonight? No? Nos,
- 16:26matter of fact, if I thought I wouldn't see her anymore, the whole
- 16:29things upset me, dreadful red place in me. If I applaud you're to
- 16:32see from your bit. But I must ask you to see mis Laven once
- 16:34more. I have a plant. I want you to rent a roundevous with
- 16:37her after the show tonight tonight, But tonight's Wednesday. Impossible to see her?
- 16:44Oh why for Wednesday's chest Night at the Gards Club, have mister chest
- 16:48night there in twenty four years, always play with the earl of Sheppy,
- 16:52Oh, always beat the old Devil two? And then tonight chair Grace,
- 16:56you must forgo your weekday riot. I want you to take mis lavedare on
- 16:59to sud at Gatti's restaurant. Oh no where goes to Gatty's own rendy of
- 17:03five years of the night there but Piston under glass. I'm afraid I must
- 17:08insist your its very well, Gatty's owner, rend we shall be their tool
- 17:15court home, we shallow Jeff. If the previous pattern of these milk is
- 17:18followed, there'll be another one received tonight, and you and I, my
- 17:22dear Watson, will be there to intercept it. So you and Holmes went
- 17:30to the restaurant to intercept the blackmail note, Doctor Watt. Yes, Noustralia.
- 17:34And it seemed like a simple way to solve the problem. Yes,
- 17:37And there usually is a simple way to solve most any problem. For instance,
- 17:42you can solve the problem of how to make something special out of an
- 17:45ordinary meal by serving Petrie California Burgundy. For example, a delicious dinner is
- 17:52hamburger served with Petrie wine. And it's amazing how good beef still can be
- 17:57when there's a glass of Petrie Burgin with it. Petrie Burgundy is a marvelous,
- 18:02full bodied red wine that was just made to go with the food.
- 18:06We Americans like pets. For a superb dinner, serve a night juicy steak
- 18:11with a glass of mellow, rich red pet Free Burgundy. It's out of
- 18:15this world. The only way to know how good Petrie Burgundy is is to
- 18:21try it. So serve pet free burgundy the next time you're having meat or
- 18:26a meat ditch. What about tomorrow night for dinner, just be sure you
- 18:30get petrie burgundy, because all petrie wines are good wine. Well, doctor
- 18:40Watson, what happened when you and Sherlock Holmes waited a Daddy's restaurant that night?
- 18:44Did miss Laverne keep her rundevout with the Duke? She did, mister
- 18:47Allam. Shortly off to midnight, she was ushered into a private room where
- 18:51the Duke was waiting without seeing you and mister Holmes. Of course, naturally,
- 18:55my boy. And how long did you have to wait before another blackmail
- 18:57note arrived? Doctors? Or they've never did arrive on that occasion, mister
- 19:00Avon Finally about one fifteen Homes squibbled a note himself and had his sentence of
- 19:06the Duke. As we waited for his grace to join us, Holmes turned
- 19:10to me with a book of priet excitement, said, interesting case, isn't
- 19:14it? What then? I don't see that we have any case, see
- 19:17no blackmail notes. Personally, I think we've made blooming fools of ourselves.
- 19:21Oh no, no, eel chap no, we're doing spendidly. The fact
- 19:22that no notice arrived is most encounaging and very clear. Pattern begins to emerge
- 19:27from my rangy wagons. I'm saying, hello, here comes the Duke.
- 19:30I got evening your grade. I ought perhaps I should say good morning,
- 19:33hello Holmes. Evening doctor having a shocking supper party. Can't eat a thing,
- 19:38level thing or the young media so much distray the stray. She is
- 19:42living about what you said to her the latinae and she said I didn't think
- 19:45I did that, visited yours. I'm having a dreadful time with her.
- 19:48Dreadful left her crying into a terif in soup. It'll be ruined about the
- 19:52soup may be ruined your grace, but you kept my confidence. Confidence so
- 19:57well what confidence? You didn't tell me, NaZn that we organize this nibus
- 20:02to night. Oh oh that? Oh no, no, I didn't know
- 20:03that. I spend it. Now you're grade. Tell me when you pay
- 20:07these black nail notes in the path. How was the transaction conducted? I
- 20:10took the bank joch in playing on brope and handed them to old flower seller
- 20:14who sits just be over stax reviewers and take it alas or at what time
- 20:18of day, sir, close noons? That was my instructions, whether that's
- 20:21what they were in the notes, or do you know the name of the
- 20:22flower seller Rosie? I think it was, Yes, yes, yes,
- 20:26Rosie, that's it. But then tomorrow at noon, your grace, you
- 20:30will repeat the procedure. I will, I mean well, I mean while
- 20:34doctor Watson and I will be mingled in the usual clouds and take it in
- 20:37the circus at that time of the day, and we shall be watching your
- 20:40grade. We shall be watching closely. Are you paying no attention to us?
- 20:44And walk up into the crowd as soon as you have handed over the
- 20:45mission. I shall be curious to see what Rosie does with that money,
- 20:48in deblishly curious. That must be Rosie the blousy or girl but the baskets
- 21:03sitting on the steps, since she's the only flower seller in the fight,
- 21:04Old Chap, I can hardly regard your deduction of totally amazing. Really,
- 21:10he'll come to do for Hollywood. He's stopping, he's handing an envelope to
- 21:15Rosie. Yeah, now he's walking away, and he's not looking round to
- 21:18see that we're in you and brave, oh gres, the gray matter is
- 21:22positively feeding this morning. Rose is putting a shawl over her head as since
- 21:27she's tacking up her bucket, that's excellent. You keep your eyes skindl,
- 21:30chap, and don't let her get away from up in this car. We've
- 21:33got to keep her in sight. She went into the bay eston and a
- 21:41dirty gust with this window right or she's she's filling in a form now she's
- 21:45handing into the cash r. All the things she's coming out now, scrap
- 21:48her no, no normal once she's obviously only in intermediary. In any case,
- 21:52she has no reason to be suspicious, and I'm quite sure that we
- 21:56can find her later if we need to. At the flot then les she
- 21:59gives us, Come on up, chap, excuse many have you? That
- 22:07old lady that just made a deposit at your window? In whose name of
- 22:11the deposit made? I'm sorry, says that the bank can't give up private
- 22:15information like that. Well, my friend is mister sher ut home as the
- 22:17detective to show up? Who will that's different with? Then you don't mind
- 22:22telling me into who's the contact? Money was paid not to hold, mister
- 22:25Holmes, if you pages the accountants the Duke of hollywell, if you've never
- 22:37tasted Petrie California Port, you're missing a wonderful taste treat. Why not give
- 22:42yourself that treat and tomorrow night, after dinner, enjoy a glass of pet
- 22:48Report. Then you'll really appreciate how delicious pet Report is. It's wonderful,
- 22:53sweet, fruity taste makes pet Report the perfect after dinner drink. That moved
- 23:00mellow sweet flavor reflects the skill of generations of fine wine making experience. One
- 23:07taste of Petrie California Port is definite proof that Petrie took time to bring you
- 23:12good wine. If you're having guessed, you'll find pet Report is the ideal
- 23:18wine to serve, and you can serve it proudly because those five letters pet
- 23:25r I fell one of the proudest names in the long history of fine wine
- 23:34for doctor Watson. As soon as you discovered that the Duke was apparently blackmailing
- 23:38himself, I suppose you and mister Holmes dashed off to see him. That
- 23:42was my instinct at at times to allen, But to my surprise, my
- 23:45old friend insisted that they call on the ductors instead. I must say,
- 23:49my boy, I was utterly flabaghasted when he turned to her and said,
- 23:53why did you do it? Your briss give it? Give up at the
- 23:56hand. Why have you been backmailing your own husband? Why is he being
- 23:59born? I don't understand the duchess does. Don't do your place. Yes,
- 24:03I understand that you've discovered my little plot. I was quite intrigued to
- 24:07see whether you would. You're a very terrible man, mister Holmes. Thank
- 24:11you, you're good. And now I repeat my question, why have you
- 24:15been blackmailing your husband to teach Holly a lesson? With high time? He
- 24:18got thoroughly frightened. He's too old and too gallible to continue his gallivantics,
- 24:25and so I approached him through one of his most volantle book. But his
- 24:27pocket book author solib eyes nomily don't understanders, it's very simple, oneson't The
- 24:33duchess wrote the blackmail notes, her husband paid them to Rosie. Why wrote
- 24:37it? By the way of this, Oh, Rosie's an old dresser's mine.
- 24:41She'd do anything for me. See and then Rosie paid the money back
- 24:45into your husband's car. And you can't I imagine yes, I opened it
- 24:48recently. Holly wouldn't have known about it until he was over this infatuation,
- 24:52and it learned his lesson. But you're grace, if you were behind this,
- 24:56brind why did you come to your work at home? I didn't,
- 24:59I pollied har And then I thought it might be that a good pretty ego
- 25:02to have the great Sherlock Holmes working for him. And also, quite frankly,
- 25:07I was curious to see where the light because how did he catch me,
- 25:11mister Holmes? Or it was a question of patterners. Every one of
- 25:15the original blackmail notes was received when the Duke was on his regular schedule.
- 25:19At the moment I ordered that schedule by rendering last night's meeting at gut Is,
- 25:22no note was received, and it was then not just to me that
- 25:26the blackmailer was someone who knew the Duke habits intimately, and Holly is a
- 25:30man of habits. Friday is the night forgetis Monday that the boy saturdays carriages.
- 25:37It's just the way he caught me, and Wednesday is in the area
- 25:41place with the Earl of Shetty of the Guard. But the where did you
- 25:47point her suspicion toward miss love in the hopes of misleading you both, and
- 25:51in the bay sincere hope of frightening her to death. I'm really quite fond
- 25:56of Holly. You know, he's a silly old man, but I do
- 25:59love him. Well, it may interest you to know, your Grace,
- 26:00that he's already decided to see no more than mislam. I'm delighted to hear
- 26:04it. Well, you should get the two thousand I promised him. Now
- 26:10I've decided to lower my feet personally after I don't think you should take a
- 26:14fee at all home, Oh rubbish, I I've earned it, and I
- 26:17demanded, well, what is it could be? Then, miss town We
- 26:19the lathern girl really sang. You're a number of bomber. I wonder if
- 26:23you would see it again for us, your Grace, George, Yes,
- 26:26well, your race, very well, that's a modest fee. Just make
- 26:30it a trio is shall we come on waiting at the church, waiting at
- 26:37the church, or waiting at the church when you can make any occasion a
- 26:56really special occasion. When you, sir, signature the wine that bears the

- 27:49This is herd Alum speaking for the Petrie Wine Company of San Francisco, California,
- 28:02the American Broadcasting Company Welcome back. While this is a different take on
- 28:08Sherlock Holmes, for one thing, Ben Wright was not trying to sound like
- 28:15Basil Rathbone. This is uh. This is of course noteworthy because I think
- 28:23you could say that every single actor after Rathbone, both Tom Ponwayne John Stanley
- 28:33for three seasons, really had that rathbon Esque sound going on. Here a
- 28:41Ben Right, it's more of a relaxed, relaxed role and devinely I think,
- 28:47pretty likable and warm as a Sherlock Holmes, So definite departure from John
- 28:52Stanley. Of course, not sounding like or trying to sound like Basil Rathbone
- 29:00may have been what doom. The series second season over Mutual had a six
- 29:03point five Hooper rating. This one had a rating about half that, so
- 29:10into the threes. And so this would be the very last season of the
- 29:14New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the few years off since it's premier nineteen thirty was
- 29:19then canceled. I really would like to hear more of this ben right series.
- 29:27This episode somewhat a typical it's from the twenty seventh of thirty nine episodes
- 29:36and probably a little lighter in tone and a typical episode. But this would
- 29:42not be the end of Sherlock Holmes in the United States. Tower of London
- 29:48would produce a s in England would produce a syndicated program which would come to
- 29:55the US over the NBC network, And we will bring you that one as
