- 0:14Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, What's going on? Emily A body here. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: are listening to another installment of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle,
- 0:23Speaker 1: a wellness focused podcast where connect with everyone from your
- 0:26Speaker 1: favorite athletes to top experts and industry CEOs about their
- 0:30Speaker 1: highest hies, toughest moments, and everything in between. We all
- 0:34Speaker 1: go through hurdles in life, and my goal through these
- 0:37Speaker 1: discussions is to empower you to better navigate yours and
- 0:40Speaker 1: move with intention so that you can stride towards your
- 0:43Speaker 1: own big potential and of course have some fun along
- 0:47Speaker 1: the way. For today's episode, I am chatting with certified nutritionist,
- 0:53Speaker 1: chef and longevity wellness expert Serena Poon and I strategically
- 0:59Speaker 1: set up this interview for the Tuesday after I returned
- 1:02Speaker 1: from a gluttonous trip because today's topic is all about
- 1:08Speaker 1: how to take care of your body after let's call
- 1:11Speaker 1: it a glutenous weekend experience.
- 1:14Speaker 2: What have you now?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Before I continue, I want to make sure that I
- 1:19Speaker 1: say this life is for enjoying. You know me, I'm
- 1:23Speaker 1: not about restriction, but I am all about fueling our
- 1:27Speaker 1: bodies with good for us foods, supplements, nutrition. You get
- 1:32Speaker 1: the idea and there are going to be times where
- 1:35Speaker 1: maybe you overdo it a little bit and you feel
- 1:38Speaker 1: less than stellar in your body. I will be the
- 1:41Speaker 1: first person to tell you that this happens to me.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I won't say on the regular, but it happens to me,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it happens to us all. And so for today's conversation,
- 1:49Speaker 1: Serena and I are talking about what to do when
- 1:52Speaker 1: you feel like you've overdone it. Of course, our conversation
- 1:56Speaker 1: starts by praising the importance of grace, knowing that there
- 1:59Speaker 1: is a time in a place, and that life is
- 2:01Speaker 1: for celebrating and living. And then Serena does give some
- 2:06Speaker 1: input into what you should be keeping in mind after
- 2:10Speaker 1: this kind of glutinous exchange. So this conversation is not
- 2:13Speaker 1: focused on specific foods and things. I mean, we talk
- 2:17Speaker 1: about the benefits of greens and hydration, but really it's
- 2:20Speaker 1: about best practices that you can integrate into your routine
- 2:24Speaker 1: to help you feel better in your body, ranging from
- 2:28Speaker 1: movement to breathwork, and how those practices help remove toxins
- 2:33Speaker 1: from the body. Plus, Serena also gives us the lowdown
- 2:37Speaker 1: on why we might want to investigate adding sea moss
- 2:42Speaker 1: into our diet. Seriously, and we also talk about the
- 2:46Speaker 1: concept of fasting and what that can and cannot do
- 2:50Speaker 1: for the body. Lots of really interesting takeaways in this one,
- 2:53Speaker 1: So thank you so much to Serena for her time.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I know I myself am inspired to as I finish
- 3:01Speaker 1: up putting together this episode, get up and go for
- 3:04Speaker 1: a little bit of a walk. Make sure you are
- 3:07Speaker 1: following along with Hurdle over on social It is at
- 3:09Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast. I am over at Emily a Body And
- 3:13Speaker 1: if you're not doing so yet, I would love for
- 3:15Speaker 1: you to be subscribed to the week the Hurdle newsletter.
- 3:18Speaker 1: This week on Friday, I'm going to be sharing with
- 3:20Speaker 1: you a bunch of my New York City favorite spots.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I get asked this question in my DMS all of
- 3:26Speaker 1: the time. The link to subscribe is in the show notes.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Last thing, if.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You have a listener question, I'd love to answer it
- 3:33Speaker 1: in an upcoming episode in the show notes, you know
- 3:36Speaker 1: the drill. Leave me a voice message and with that,
- 3:41Speaker 1: let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling. Today, I
- 3:54Speaker 1: am sitting down with nutritionist Serena Poon.
- 3:57Speaker 2: How are you doing today?
- 3:58Speaker 3: I'm great, Terry. Thank you for having me of course.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Honestly, some of the most listened to episodes of the
- 4:05Speaker 1: show are with nutritionists, so I'm always excited when I
- 4:08Speaker 1: have an opportunity to connect with someone with such vast
- 4:12Speaker 1: experience as you. So let's kick off by talking a
- 4:16Speaker 1: little bit about that.
- 4:17Speaker 2: What got you in to the area of New Jrishead.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, so thank you again so much for having me.
- 4:24Speaker 3: My background really kind of came from my parents' experience
- 4:29Speaker 3: with health. So they both had cancer very young. My
- 4:33Speaker 3: daddy was diagnosed with cancer in his forties and it
- 4:36Speaker 3: was liver cancer, so he actually passed when he was
- 4:39Speaker 3: forty eight, and two months after he passed, my mom
- 4:43Speaker 3: I was diagnosed with a rare form of bavarian cancer.
- 4:46Speaker 3: She was forty five. So, you know, it was obviously
- 4:50Speaker 3: traditional medicine. There was chemo radiation all that, but we're Chinese,
- 4:56Speaker 3: so there was also Chinese medicine. And then I started
- 5:00Speaker 3: to look into food and plants and herbs and things
- 5:04Speaker 3: outside of what the doctors were telling us, because first
- 5:08Speaker 3: of all, we were foodies. My dad loved to eat,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and I feel that there's so much there's food. We
- 5:14Speaker 3: talk about how food is medicine, food is also love,
- 5:16Speaker 3: and there's a healing in that as well, and they
- 5:19Speaker 3: weren't receiving that, you know, when they were sick and
- 5:22Speaker 3: during treatment. So I started diving into that then looking
- 5:26Speaker 3: at different ways, looking at nutrition. How could I help
- 5:30Speaker 3: support them or at least at the minimum, minimize their symptoms.
- 5:34Speaker 3: And after college, where I actually study nutrition secondary to
- 5:38Speaker 3: my major of political science, I went to culinary school.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I studied at lacrod On Blue and I really wanted
- 5:45Speaker 3: to understand how I could use the culinary arts to
- 5:47Speaker 3: make food as medicine beautiful and appealing to people. So
- 5:53Speaker 3: that's really how I got started, and just I have
- 5:56Speaker 3: such a thirst for learning and education, so I just
- 5:59Speaker 3: started diving into there's holistic nutrition, arobatic and more into
- 6:03Speaker 3: Chinese medicine and food and I still learned to this day.
- 6:09Speaker 3: But that's sort of how I started got my certifications,
- 6:13Speaker 3: and at the time, because I was a classically trained chef,
- 6:16Speaker 3: I was sort of teaching nutrition through the food I
- 6:19Speaker 3: was making and working with clients one and one that way.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And then I had my own health journey, had several surgeries,
- 6:29Speaker 3: kind of put myself at the bottom of my self
- 6:30Speaker 3: careless and because of that I had some illness. So
- 6:35Speaker 3: in my own journey, I actually had some experiences where
- 6:40Speaker 3: I couldn't cook. After one of my surgeries, I was
- 6:44Speaker 3: unable to use the upper left side of my body
- 6:47Speaker 3: for a while. So I really fully dived into nutrition
- 6:52Speaker 3: and just using and opening up that vertical of my
- 6:55Speaker 3: business and just taking all the knowledge that I had
- 6:58Speaker 3: that I was putting into food and consulting and teaching
- 7:02Speaker 3: people from that point forward. And it's sort of from
- 7:05Speaker 3: there that I birthed my method of culinary alchemy, which
- 7:09Speaker 3: is sort of this integrative, functional way of taking nutrition
- 7:16Speaker 3: from all different aspects but also embodying your mind and
- 7:21Speaker 3: your energy body. So it's very physical, your physiological, your
- 7:25Speaker 3: emotional body, your soul body, your energy body, and all
- 7:28Speaker 3: of that becomes sort of your nutrition protocol. And that's
- 7:32Speaker 3: where it's starting.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And that's where it started. Well, thank you for sharing that.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I would be really curious to know a little bit
- 7:39Speaker 1: about how you personally used food as medicine to remediate
- 7:44Speaker 1: some of the health issues that you were experiencing.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so I'm not in my forties. Throughout every
- 7:51Speaker 3: period of your life, your body has different challenges, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 3: and when I was younger in my twenties, and I
- 7:59Speaker 3: was kind of going through the stress of being a
- 8:01Speaker 3: caretaker and not taking care of myself. I had a
- 8:03Speaker 3: lot of gut issues, you know, I had a lot
- 8:05Speaker 3: of gut issues. I found my digestive issues. So everything
- 8:11Speaker 3: that I would say everyone at some point may experience,
- 8:13Speaker 3: especially women, you know, whether you have bloating or you're
- 8:17Speaker 3: not regular, or it's uncomfortable, and really sort of diving
- 8:21Speaker 3: into the microbiome and understanding the gut and how we
- 8:24Speaker 3: can support that with probiotics. And I have a few
- 8:27Speaker 3: other things now that I can share to your audists
- 8:29Speaker 3: that they may not have heard of that really also
- 8:31Speaker 3: help you your gut health. That also affects your immunity,
- 8:36Speaker 3: because your microbiome is quarter your immunity. So then I
- 8:38Speaker 3: found myself getting sick, you know, every winter, especially after
- 8:43Speaker 3: the holidays, when I was working so hard as a
- 8:45Speaker 3: private chef, and you know, you go super hard, you
- 8:47Speaker 3: burn your adrenals, and then you get sick, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 3: because you're sort of running on adrenaline. So then I
- 8:53Speaker 3: had to sort of learn how to really support my
- 8:55Speaker 3: body by mitigating inflammation, really supporting the adrenals and keeping
- 9:01Speaker 3: my immune system strong. One of the primary health issues
- 9:05Speaker 3: that I had that kind of spanned like eight years
- 9:09Speaker 3: and eight surgeries, was that I contracted MRSA Mrsay, which
- 9:13Speaker 3: is a deadly said staff infection after one of my surgeries.
- 9:17Speaker 3: So that sort of kind of keeps me at a
- 9:20Speaker 3: baseline where I always have to be very mindful of
- 9:23Speaker 3: inflammation of keeping my immune system strong. So that was
- 9:27Speaker 3: sort of that period of life and moving forward, and
- 9:30Speaker 3: then now that I'm a little bit older, it's there's
- 9:33Speaker 3: such a focus on female health, you know, my hormonal health,
- 9:38Speaker 3: and a lot of my focuses on stress management, and
- 9:43Speaker 3: then the things that we can put into our bodies
- 9:46Speaker 3: through food obviously nutrition and also supplements that can help
- 9:50Speaker 3: support that.
- 9:51Speaker 1: What I'd love to really dial in on here is
- 9:54Speaker 1: gut health, because I do think that this will segue
- 9:56Speaker 1: us into our conversations today, which is kind of talking
- 9:59Speaker 1: about out uh, detoxing or good things that you can
- 10:03Speaker 1: do for your body maybe after you feel as though
- 10:05Speaker 1: you've gone a little bit off the rails. So before
- 10:08Speaker 1: we get there, let's talk a little bit about gut health.
- 10:10Speaker 1: You said you may have some insight into things we
- 10:12Speaker 1: don't know about when it comes to taking care of
- 10:15Speaker 1: our guts.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So lead me into that. What are we talking about here?
- 10:18Speaker 3: So you know, everyone knows about probiotics. You know, there's probiotics,
- 10:23Speaker 3: which is that's the good, the good bacteria, right, the
- 10:26Speaker 3: friendly bacteria that we want in our gut. And then
- 10:28Speaker 3: of course the probiotics, which is the food. It's the
- 10:30Speaker 3: food for the probiotics. With the probiotics nimble on, and
- 10:33Speaker 3: then you also have like post biotics, and so all
- 10:36Speaker 3: of this is you know, we're starting to learn more
- 10:39Speaker 3: and more about bacteria. There's so many different strains and
- 10:42Speaker 3: how it helps support our system. So I would say
- 10:46Speaker 3: that most of us, by the time we're a young adult,
- 10:49Speaker 3: has probably taken a cycle of antibiotics at some point,
- 10:53Speaker 3: and that can really recab it on your gut microbiome
- 10:56Speaker 3: because it kind of kills all of our bacteria, so
- 11:00Speaker 3: the good and the bad. And if you and maybe
- 11:03Speaker 3: there are some people out there that have never taken
- 11:04Speaker 3: a cycle of antibiotics, but if you have, then it's
- 11:08Speaker 3: really about the rebuild, you know, because it strips away
- 11:11Speaker 3: all of our good bacteria as well. It's about putting
- 11:15Speaker 3: that good bacteria back in. So you get that in
- 11:17Speaker 3: the form of high quality probiotics. There's all different forms, right,
- 11:21Speaker 3: There's there's you know, soil base, which is very popular.
- 11:25Speaker 3: There's you know, and I would say talk to your
- 11:28Speaker 3: practitioner because I can't drop brand names here, but you know,
- 11:31Speaker 3: talk to your health practitioner and your doctor about getting
- 11:34Speaker 3: having a really solid probiotic that supported with a probiotic
- 11:39Speaker 3: that you want to have on a regular basis. Now,
- 11:42Speaker 3: some people have an overgrowth, right, like if you've got
- 11:45Speaker 3: some if you've got like candida or see some overgrowth,
- 11:48Speaker 3: that may not serve you in a short period of time.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But on a regular basis, you want to have healthy
- 11:53Speaker 3: bacteria and you've got microbiom and you want to be
- 11:56Speaker 3: able to feed that bacteria. And especially if you've gone
- 12:00Speaker 3: through or taking any type of antibiotic, and you want
- 12:03Speaker 3: to do it during So most doctors will say it's pointless,
- 12:07Speaker 3: pointless to take probiotics when you're on antibiotics. I highly disagree.
- 12:11Speaker 3: It's really about when you take it. So if you're
- 12:13Speaker 3: taking an antibiotic and it's like a twice a day thing,
- 12:16Speaker 3: then you want to find time in the middle of
- 12:18Speaker 3: your day where you take a probiotic and something that
- 12:21Speaker 3: has live bacteria in it that's refrigerated. There are some
- 12:24Speaker 3: that are shelf stable. You want to get that in
- 12:26Speaker 3: the middle of your day away at least three hours
- 12:28Speaker 3: away from taking that to help support your system. And
- 12:32Speaker 3: then there's something that I have, you know, recommended, I've
- 12:36Speaker 3: been using for years, that I've been recommending to my clients,
- 12:39Speaker 3: and really there's been such I didn't realize people didn't
- 12:43Speaker 3: really know about it. So we did a blog post
- 12:45Speaker 3: and it's called Irish sea moss. Just get some unless
- 12:49Speaker 3: you have unless you're exceedingly high in certain minerals. Irish
- 12:55Speaker 3: sea moss is basically a seaweed. You find it off
- 12:57Speaker 3: the coast of like the Virgin Islands, like Saint John.
- 13:00Speaker 3: It's and it's seaweed, so you can get dry and dehydrated,
- 13:03Speaker 3: you can rehydrate it, cook it a little bit without
- 13:05Speaker 3: killing it, and it looks like a gel and you
- 13:08Speaker 3: just take like a scoop of that once a day.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I would say, depending on what your system is, like
- 13:14Speaker 3: one to two tablespoons once a day, maybe you might
- 13:17Speaker 3: need more, you know, towards the evening or something. And
- 13:21Speaker 3: this is like the superfood of superfoods. It's got nine
- 13:25Speaker 3: ninety four of the one hundred plus essential amino acids.
- 13:28Speaker 3: It's higher in touring for anyone who's more plant forward.
- 13:31Speaker 3: It's got all the vitamin minerals that you need and
- 13:35Speaker 3: because of them, and this is sort of very rividic
- 13:38Speaker 3: or Chinese medicine. It's it's like a gel, so it
- 13:42Speaker 3: kind of mimics don't get grissed like kind of mucus.
- 13:45Speaker 3: You know, our gut, our digestive system or GI system
- 13:48Speaker 3: is very it's lined with it's our The mucosal system
- 13:52Speaker 3: of our GI is so important that protects us. And
- 13:56Speaker 3: so a lot of people have leaky guts because they
- 13:58Speaker 3: don't have healthy gut MicroB that can lead to other issues.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And this is something that's really helped people that have
- 14:04Speaker 3: had lifelong ibs, you know, lifelong floating, lifelong digestive issues,
- 14:11Speaker 3: food allergies, food intolerances, constipation, all kinds of things. So
- 14:18Speaker 3: if you have any of those issues, or if you've
- 14:22Speaker 3: been rough on your tummy, like maybe went to Vegas
- 14:25Speaker 3: for a weekend and had a bachelor bachelor party, this
- 14:28Speaker 3: is something that you want to put into your system
- 14:30Speaker 3: because it really helps heal and coat the gut and
- 14:35Speaker 3: then helps support the microbiome.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Now you mentioned, you know, kind of going out and
- 14:40Speaker 1: going to a bachelor a bachelorette party in Vegas. I myself,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you and I are having this conversation shortly after I
- 14:46Speaker 1: return from the super Bowl. It was a fun weekend,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but definitely a gluttonous weekend. And so that brings me
- 14:53Speaker 1: to the concept and topic of which we are here
- 14:55Speaker 1: to talk about today. What is someone to do when
- 14:59Speaker 1: they're feeling as though they have quote unquote messed up.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I'd love for us to address the mental side of
- 15:05Speaker 1: things right and the importance of having grace with yourself
- 15:09Speaker 1: after a big weekend. So what's the first thing that
- 15:13Speaker 1: you talk to your clients about after they feel as
- 15:17Speaker 1: though maybe they have gone too far in one direction?
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yeah? No, And that's such a And thank you for
- 15:22Speaker 3: bringing this topic up because it's so important. You know,
- 15:25Speaker 3: we beat ourselves up so hard when we have when
- 15:28Speaker 3: we binge, or we have a bad weekend or bad night.
- 15:32Speaker 3: And first of all, it's not even scientific. You've proven
- 15:38Speaker 3: that one bad night or one bad day or one
- 15:41Speaker 3: bad weekend is going to destroy your life. Our bodies
- 15:45Speaker 3: are always rebuilding like we are an ever healing, ever growing,
- 15:50Speaker 3: ever regenerating being. You know you are. Sometimes I think
- 15:55Speaker 3: that we it's really sort of about coming back to
- 15:58Speaker 3: reverence for yourself, for your for this incredible machine that
- 16:02Speaker 3: we are, which is more profound than you know, a
- 16:05Speaker 3: device that we give so much credit to. We're constantly regenerating,
- 16:10Speaker 3: We're constantly healing. So the first thing I would say
- 16:14Speaker 3: is exactly that, like, one weekend is not going to
- 16:16Speaker 3: destroy you. Now, are you going to feel terrible? Well?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Of course, because you put a whole bunch of toxins
- 16:22Speaker 3: in your body. So it's really just about pulling those
- 16:25Speaker 3: toxins out. And the number one thing and it sounds
- 16:28Speaker 3: so simple that people don't do that they can do
- 16:33Speaker 3: to help themselves is hydration. You know, from longevity conferences
- 16:38Speaker 3: that I've spoken at, to nutrition, to wellness, to right
- 16:42Speaker 3: I mean anything. If someone asked me, what is give
- 16:45Speaker 3: me a top three tip take home tip for people,
- 16:49Speaker 3: it's number one of them is always hydration. I would
- 16:52Speaker 3: say it's my number one. If I'm given three, it's
- 16:54Speaker 3: number one. If I'm given five, it's number one. If
- 16:56Speaker 3: I'm given ten, it's number one. Because every single client
- 16:59Speaker 3: except for me, be two that I've ever had comes
- 17:03Speaker 3: to me dehydrated. We just don't drink enough. We just
- 17:06Speaker 3: don't hydrate enough, but we don't drink enough water. So
- 17:09Speaker 3: unless you have something with your kidneys or your mineral
- 17:13Speaker 3: highly mineral deficient, which you can also add in trace
- 17:15Speaker 3: minerals back into your water, really staying while hydrate is
- 17:19Speaker 3: going to help you so much because it helps your
- 17:21Speaker 3: body flesh, it helps your body detox, and that is
- 17:25Speaker 3: what your body is trying to get rid of to
- 17:27Speaker 3: feel better. So whether it's alcohol or highly processed foods
- 17:33Speaker 3: or fried foods, I love my fries as well. You know,
- 17:36Speaker 3: whatever it is, it's you want to you want to
- 17:38Speaker 3: be really hydrated. I start my day with lemon water
- 17:41Speaker 3: every single day, like a warm cup of lemon water. Well,
- 17:44Speaker 3: I start my day with with coconut oil. I oil pool,
- 17:49Speaker 3: and it's actually something that can make you feel better,
- 17:51Speaker 3: especially if you've binged, because we have an accumulation of bacteria,
- 17:56Speaker 3: not the fun kind, not the friendly kine. So you
- 17:58Speaker 3: oil poll just those few days after you've had a binge,
- 18:02Speaker 3: even that alone will help with your immune system and
- 18:05Speaker 3: it'll help you feel better. So that's just basically taking
- 18:08Speaker 3: like a spoonful of coconut oil or something swishing around
- 18:11Speaker 3: in your mouth while you take a shower, so for
- 18:12Speaker 3: five or ten minutes, spinning it out and then brushing
- 18:15Speaker 3: your teeth, and then drinking your water or drinking anything else,
- 18:19Speaker 3: because you don't want to pull all those bacterias back
- 18:21Speaker 3: into your system. It's in your mouth and you want
- 18:24Speaker 3: to get rid of it. So staying really well hydrated,
- 18:26Speaker 3: alkalizing your system because most of the times when we binge,
- 18:30Speaker 3: we're taking in foods and beverages that are a little
- 18:35Speaker 3: bit more acidic. So whether it's alcohol or coffee for
- 18:40Speaker 3: the day after alcohol or whatever it is, we're putting
- 18:43Speaker 3: foods into our system that changes our page level and
- 18:46Speaker 3: puts it more into the acidic side. So if you
- 18:50Speaker 3: can alkalize your system, so whether it's with alkaline water
- 18:53Speaker 3: or drinking some lemon water, alkalizing your system is something
- 18:59Speaker 3: that's really going to help you. And then you want
- 19:01Speaker 3: to sort of take in foods to help cut what
- 19:04Speaker 3: I call it like leachs those toxins out. Helps you
- 19:07Speaker 3: kind of culate those toxins, and you want to put
- 19:10Speaker 3: things into your system to help you help bind I
- 19:12Speaker 3: love fresh herbs, like partially cilantro. I would put them
- 19:18Speaker 3: in your juices. The next day reach for a green juice,
- 19:21Speaker 3: which for some people it sounds not so yummy. For me,
- 19:24Speaker 3: I love, But if you need a little sweetness and
- 19:26Speaker 3: it put a green apple, put something in it, because
- 19:28Speaker 3: it's highly alkalizing. And if you put some of those
- 19:32Speaker 3: fresh herbs in it, they pull toxins as well, especially metals.
- 19:36Speaker 3: So these are all things that it just you know,
- 19:38Speaker 3: in order to feel better, you got to get rid
- 19:39Speaker 3: of the junk, and so that's that's what you need
- 19:42Speaker 3: to do, and just stay super hydrated.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, because so often we're told we need all of
- 19:47Speaker 1: these things to detox. But the real deal is that
- 19:50Speaker 1: our bodies naturally do it for us.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Right, Our bodies are doing this without us even thinking
- 19:56Speaker 3: about it as we breathe, you know. So breath work
- 19:59Speaker 3: is something that is a bit more popular nowadays. But
- 20:03Speaker 3: even as we breathe, we're releasing toxins, you know, So
- 20:07Speaker 3: just even taking deep breaths or doing some sort of
- 20:10Speaker 3: breath work or gentle movement, all of this is helping.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You know, one of the most important things to remember
- 20:17Speaker 3: that you brought up when you first asked me, is
- 20:19Speaker 3: just sort of being gentle worth ourselves and having that
- 20:22Speaker 3: grace and being and being kind to our nervous system,
- 20:25Speaker 3: you know, because when when you're out and you're having
- 20:27Speaker 3: a great time and you're celebrating the Super Bowl or
- 20:30Speaker 3: anything else, our nervous we're having a great time, but
- 20:33Speaker 3: our nervous system is like jacked, you know. And so
- 20:37Speaker 3: part of it is also allowing ourselves to kind of
- 20:40Speaker 3: come back into a place of receiving, of processing, of
- 20:44Speaker 3: digesting and releasing, and that's bringing our nervous system back
- 20:48Speaker 3: into a parasympathetic state, and we know how to do that.
- 20:52Speaker 3: That's meditation, that's breath, just taking it easy. All of
- 20:57Speaker 3: those things that shift us into that state helps us detoks.
- 21:01Speaker 3: It helps us get our bodies back into that sort
- 21:04Speaker 3: of regenerous space, because, as you say, our bodies naturally release,
- 21:08Speaker 3: our bodies naturally cleansed and clean, and to allow ourselves
- 21:11Speaker 3: to do that, it's kind of being in that and
- 21:13Speaker 3: that relaxed, easy state and judging ourselves for what we
- 21:18Speaker 3: did for the weekend does not put us in that
- 21:21Speaker 3: parasympathetic state, you know. So it's really it kind of
- 21:25Speaker 3: we get stressed out. I was just like, ah, and
- 21:27Speaker 3: I've you know, I did this. I'm so mad at myself.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I lost all this weight just to get to the
- 21:32Speaker 3: just to go on this trip, and then I binged
- 21:34Speaker 3: and I feel like I've put all this weight back
- 21:36Speaker 3: and I feel bloated. And that's just natural how your
- 21:38Speaker 3: body processes. Know that it's temporary. Know that it was
- 21:41Speaker 3: just a weekend. It's not going to change your life
- 21:44Speaker 3: unless this is what you're going to do every single day,
- 21:47Speaker 3: and that you can just clean it out and start fresh.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 21:57Speaker 1: about my sponsors. First up, ag one from Athletic Greens.

- 22:26Speaker 1: Blend along with the multi vitamins, probiotics, adaptagens and more,

- 24:38Speaker 1: tracker dot com slash hurdle to get twenty percent off
- 24:42Speaker 1: the entire store today. I'll be the first person to
- 24:54Speaker 1: admit that after a weekend or a week or whatnot
- 24:57Speaker 1: of like questionable eating decisions, I have been in a
- 25:01Speaker 1: place where I've thought maybe I should just take a
- 25:03Speaker 1: little time off, i e. Fast for twelve hours, twenty
- 25:07Speaker 1: four hours reset the body. I know now that behaviors
- 25:11Speaker 1: like that don't serve me, and that through my studying
- 25:14Speaker 1: for my Precision Nutrition Level one certification and whatnot. The
- 25:18Speaker 1: best thing I can do is start to put good
- 25:20Speaker 1: for me foods in my body. But I say this
- 25:22Speaker 1: because I know that there are people listening to this
- 25:24Speaker 1: who have certainly had the same thoughts.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there are some people and there are
- 25:29Speaker 3: a lot of people actually that feel like, oh, I
- 25:31Speaker 3: ate so bad, I did, I was so naughty. I'm
- 25:34Speaker 3: just not going to eat you know for two days.
- 25:36Speaker 3: That actually stresses our system out. You know, our bodies
- 25:40Speaker 3: are adjusted and you know, depending on your lifestyle, your
- 25:45Speaker 3: body adjust to what comes in. So if it's used
- 25:47Speaker 3: to a certain number of calories coming in, if it's
- 25:50Speaker 3: used to a certain number of nutrients, when you put
- 25:53Speaker 3: it in full deficit, it's stressful for the body. Now
- 25:57Speaker 3: I am, you know, longevity wellness expert, so I will
- 26:03Speaker 3: say that putting your body in short bouts of stress,
- 26:07Speaker 3: you know, is actually good. You know, that's that's hormonic
- 26:10Speaker 3: stress that can signal autophagy, and that's actually very good
- 26:14Speaker 3: for longevity, which is why intermittent fasting has become so
- 26:18Speaker 3: popular and I personally do that as well. I'm very
- 26:21Speaker 3: big about an eating window you know, and getting a
- 26:24Speaker 3: lot of nutrient dense foods and an eating windows. So
- 26:27Speaker 3: I may, I may fast for twelve to sixteen hours
- 26:31Speaker 3: on any given day. I try to do it regularly.
- 26:33Speaker 3: But don't forget that those hours counts. Your sleep counts
- 26:36Speaker 3: during that time, you know. So it's not like you
- 26:40Speaker 3: are awake for twelve hours and you donate. It's more
- 26:43Speaker 3: like your sleep, your sleep time counts. What you're saying
- 26:47Speaker 3: is that is it not healthy to just go and
- 26:50Speaker 3: starve yourself for two days after you have a bange?
- 26:53Speaker 3: And yes, I agree, I don't think that that's healthy.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I think that what you're doing is the perfect thing
- 27:00Speaker 3: to do, which is hydrate your system, have some moon movement,
- 27:03Speaker 3: help your body flesh out, you know, anything that you
- 27:06Speaker 3: put into it that doesn't serve you that you don't
- 27:08Speaker 3: want any of those toxins, and then put really good
- 27:11Speaker 3: things into your body, you know, the extra greens and
- 27:16Speaker 3: maybe just even being fully plant based or plant forward
- 27:20Speaker 3: for those few days helps our helps our systems cleanse
- 27:24Speaker 3: and alkalize and get back and then bring in the
- 27:27Speaker 3: neutrines that it needs.
- 27:28Speaker 1: So when we're thinking about what some of these good
- 27:30Speaker 1: things can be can you provide a few examples.
- 27:33Speaker 3: So I'm very big about eating the rainbow, you know,
- 27:36Speaker 3: that sort of core to my culinary alchemy, proprietary method
- 27:42Speaker 3: of that protocol that I do. I put it out
- 27:45Speaker 3: in the community, but I also work with clients that way.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Eating the rainbow is really important because we get all
- 27:51Speaker 3: those polyphenols, all those plant funels, all those vitamins and
- 27:55Speaker 3: neutunes that our body actually needs because we are kind
- 28:00Speaker 3: of hit a deficit if we're binging on things that
- 28:02Speaker 3: aren't as healthy, and that helps us. And greens, you know,
- 28:06Speaker 3: anything that's highly alkalizing, anything that's in anti inflammatory. So
- 28:11Speaker 3: you know most people know about ginger and turmeric. Those
- 28:14Speaker 3: are great, you know, down those immunity shots that you
- 28:17Speaker 3: you might see at the juice store or at the
- 28:19Speaker 3: grocery store, those are all great when you're trying to
- 28:22Speaker 3: sort of detox, but at the same time give your
- 28:25Speaker 3: body what it needs. So lots of greens, fresh vegetables.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Of course, if you can get them organic, that would
- 28:33Speaker 3: be preferred. And I would say minimize the sugar. So
- 28:38Speaker 3: people may go to smoothies thinking that this feels refreshing
- 28:41Speaker 3: and great, and it is, but just be mindful of
- 28:44Speaker 3: how much fruit there is in it and how much
- 28:46Speaker 3: sugar because because you know that might not always serve
- 28:51Speaker 3: your system as well, because you probably already took in
- 28:53Speaker 3: a lot of sugar when you were binging. So minimizing
- 28:57Speaker 3: that the few days after the week after is good.
- 29:00Speaker 3: You know, lots of greens, it really helps.
- 29:03Speaker 2: We like greens, Okay? Cool?
- 29:05Speaker 1: And then as we move forward and talk about this
- 29:10Speaker 1: concept of detoxing aside from hydration, taking in greens, being
- 29:15Speaker 1: mindful of the sugars that you're putting into your body,
- 29:18Speaker 1: is there anything else that we should take into account?
- 29:20Speaker 1: I love that you touched on the concept slash benefit
- 29:24Speaker 1: of breathwork and meditation.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I mean we want to release, right, and
- 29:29Speaker 3: so we want to sweat because sweating is a way
- 29:33Speaker 3: that our bodies release toxins. And you can do that
- 29:35Speaker 3: in so many different ways. You know, whether that's through
- 29:38Speaker 3: exercise and of course drink more water when you're sweating.
- 29:42Speaker 3: A lot, can be through hot yoga, through cardio, it
- 29:46Speaker 3: can be any form of exercise and movement. And then
- 29:49Speaker 3: of course there's also being in the saunas. You know,
- 29:51Speaker 3: whether you are wanting to go sit in an in
- 29:54Speaker 3: for it, sauna or any sort of sauna that helps.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Anytime your body can release, you are letting go of
- 30:03Speaker 3: those toxins. So massage too. And my clients love this
- 30:07Speaker 3: when I tell them massage can be added into your
- 30:12Speaker 3: week as not just a lifestyle modality for health, but
- 30:15Speaker 3: actually movement because you are moving your muscles, the mazousin
- 30:20Speaker 3: the therapist is actually helping to open up and release
- 30:23Speaker 3: those toxins. That's why they tell you drink a bunch
- 30:25Speaker 3: of water after this, because they want you to let
- 30:28Speaker 3: that pass through. So lymphatic drainage, massage, any type of
- 30:33Speaker 3: sort of there's all kinds of quote biohacking type of
- 30:37Speaker 3: gear that can help facilitate, you know, with compression and massage.
- 30:41Speaker 3: All of that is great. Body work is great. Breath
- 30:44Speaker 3: work is great obviously. Meditation, I believe is great for everything,
- 30:48Speaker 3: not just detoxing, but because you breathe, you know, methodically.
- 30:53Speaker 3: When you're in meditation again, every time you breathe, you're
- 30:57Speaker 3: breathing out toxins, you know, and you're breathing in what
- 31:00Speaker 3: your body needs and you're breathing out what your body
- 31:02Speaker 3: doesn't need. So all of that is great. And of
- 31:06Speaker 3: course I know the ivs have become very popular in
- 31:08Speaker 3: the last few years. They're excellent predominantly for hydration because
- 31:14Speaker 3: most people after they've you know, had a binge type
- 31:18Speaker 3: of a weekend, they're dehydrated. Usually you've taken in more
- 31:22Speaker 3: salts and more sugars, and you probably your body's not
- 31:25Speaker 3: in balance with the amount of sodium that you're taking in,
- 31:28Speaker 3: which is why that can be helpful. So you know,
- 31:32Speaker 3: I'm a fan of those as well, but you're mostly
- 31:35Speaker 3: getting hydration when you're doing the IV You are getting
- 31:38Speaker 3: the vitamins depending on what blend that you get, and
- 31:42Speaker 3: that's probably because you didn't take in as many nutrient
- 31:44Speaker 3: dense foods when you were binging and you're burning through
- 31:47Speaker 3: a lot.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I feel like this word binging is like triggering for me.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Do you find that a lot with like the clients
- 31:54Speaker 1: that you work with.
- 31:55Speaker 3: It depends some people, yes, And I apologize if it
- 31:58Speaker 3: was triggering for you.
- 31:59Speaker 2: But know like it's not. It's not your fault.
- 32:01Speaker 1: But I feel like it's just there's such a negative
- 32:04Speaker 1: connotation with the idea of like, oh, there's so much
- 32:06Speaker 1: guilt associated with it.
- 32:08Speaker 3: It is and there shouldn't be because by definition, what
- 32:11Speaker 3: does binging mean. Binging means over consumption, right, and so
- 32:15Speaker 3: we can just say over consumption. We consumed on you know, you're.
- 32:21Speaker 2: At the super Bowl, So not only did you.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Over consume maybe on foods and drinks that you wouldn't
- 32:26Speaker 3: normally on an average basis, our senses are over consuming.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Between the number of people and the energies and the
- 32:34Speaker 3: sound and the decipel and the volume of sound and
- 32:37Speaker 3: the lights and everything going on, our entire system is
- 32:41Speaker 3: over consuming. So you know, I think that anytime, you know,
- 32:46Speaker 3: I think that most of the time there's something, it's
- 32:49Speaker 3: because there's a judgment. And don't judge anything. You know,
- 32:52Speaker 3: you're allowed to live your life, like go have a
- 32:54Speaker 3: good time. Just know that sometimes when you're doing that,
- 32:57Speaker 3: when we over consume, then we're just we're putting more
- 33:01Speaker 3: into our system than our body needs. And that can
- 33:05Speaker 3: be you can over consume and binge on broccoli, you know.
- 33:09Speaker 3: I mean, it's really just about overconsumption. And I think
- 33:12Speaker 3: typically when we associate the word binge, it's associated with partying, right,
- 33:17Speaker 3: and so there's this sort of negative connotation. But like
- 33:21Speaker 3: let's just strip the judgment from it. What are you
- 33:24Speaker 3: doing when you're binging? You are taking in more of
- 33:27Speaker 3: something that you You are taking more than you need
- 33:30Speaker 3: of something, you know, whether it's a food or beverage.
- 33:34Speaker 3: It may be alcohol, it may be tater tuts, whatever
- 33:37Speaker 3: it is. At the end of the day, you're just
- 33:39Speaker 3: taking in more than your body needs. That's simply what
- 33:43Speaker 3: it is. So what do you you just balance out
- 33:45Speaker 3: your body?
- 33:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and so we talked about, you know, certain foods
- 33:50Speaker 1: and things to incorporate if you feel like you've kind
- 33:52Speaker 1: of overdone it. We talked about the benefit of breathwork.
- 33:55Speaker 1: The last thing that I do want to talk about,
- 33:56Speaker 1: and we touched on it all right briefly already is
- 33:59Speaker 1: the benefit fit of getting some movement in right, and
- 34:02Speaker 1: that movement doesn't need to be anything crazy.
- 34:05Speaker 2: It can even be something simple like a walk.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it doesn't have to be high intensity. You know,
- 34:12Speaker 3: it's really just about movement. We have this mentality and
- 34:16Speaker 3: it's very much a us mentality that more is better,
- 34:20Speaker 3: and it doesn't have to be It's just about movement.
- 34:23Speaker 3: It's movement, getting the movement and the energy and your
- 34:25Speaker 3: body flowing, you know, getting your fluids flowing. Getting your
- 34:29Speaker 3: own flat, your lymphatic flowing, getting your circulation flowing so
- 34:33Speaker 3: that things can't your toxins can come out, your cells
- 34:37Speaker 3: can get fed oxygen. I mean, it's just about flow.
- 34:41Speaker 3: So any type of movement, walking is great. I mean,
- 34:44Speaker 3: you can even do light yoga. Yeah. So the movement
- 34:47Speaker 3: can help with circulation, it can help with your lymphatic system,
- 34:53Speaker 3: which is sort of our detoxing system, right, and it
- 34:56Speaker 3: can help with your digestive system, and of course, like
- 35:00Speaker 3: I said, it helps with the energy. Just kind of
- 35:02Speaker 3: helps with your chi and your prana. You have to
- 35:05Speaker 3: everything is always in motion if you think about it,
- 35:07Speaker 3: within our body, ourselves, everything is always in motion. So
- 35:11Speaker 3: to sit stagnant is not really helping the flow of
- 35:13Speaker 3: the whole system. So just movement, and it doesn't have
- 35:17Speaker 3: to be extreme, it can just.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Be like movement, just movement.
- 35:21Speaker 1: So many good tips in here, Serena. I'm so happy
