- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Part 2 of David's life and that is called the fighting years.
- 0:36And this goes from the anointing of Samuel on his life but with
- 0:41oil to the time that he ends up marrying the King's daughter.
- 0:47And as we look at David's life, here is a a young man that grew
- 0:55up in a large family and he was the youngest.
- 0:59Now I'm just curious, some of you grew up in a large family.
- 1:04You want to raise your hand if you grew up in a large family.
- 1:09OK, how about if you were the youngest?
- 1:15OK, so David was #8 and his oldest brothers were the ones
- 1:26that went into the army, the three oldest ones.
- 1:30And you can just get an idea of how difficult that may have been
- 1:37where you're the, you're considered the lightweight,
- 1:40you're considered, oh, you know, let's let him do The Dirty work
- 1:44and, and playing games on him. And I mean, when, you know, we
- 1:48had three boys, my wife and I, and Micah was our oldest.
- 1:54And then Jesse was 2 1/2 years later.
- 1:56And then Chris was six years later.
- 1:59And they played so many tricks on Chris that I understand what
- 2:04it's like to be the youngest and to be made the, yeah, you know,
- 2:08just unbelievable, great stories.
- 2:12But I'm glad it's over. OK.
- 2:16And here was David growing up with little respect and little
- 2:22honor in a large family. He wasn't even invited to the
- 2:29feast that Samuel set up there in Bethlehem.
- 2:34And Jesse's family was specifically invited to attend
- 2:38this this feast. And Jesse, the dad didn't even
- 2:41have his youngest son come that said, go out in the field, take
- 2:46care of the sheep. And, and when we look at David,
- 2:52we see a man that just didn't care how he was treated because
- 3:00his focus was on how God treated him.
- 3:04And it carried him through all of that.
- 3:07And by the way, he had no idea growing up what his future would
- 3:13hold. And we're just reading about it
- 3:15because we've got the pages. But he had no idea.
- 3:19Just like we don't have any idea of what's ahead, but God does.
- 3:26And there are reasons for waiting.
- 3:30There are reasons when it seems like nothing's working, like
- 3:33it's supposed to work. God is still working when we
- 3:37don't understand what's going on.
- 3:40And that was true in David's life, maybe 15 years, but he
- 3:46used that time to develop a close personal relationship with
- 3:51the Lord that impacted the whole nation later.
- 3:57He could have never known, but God was watching.
- 4:02And we talked about this last week.
- 4:04If those of you, if you were not here last week, that study is on
- 4:09the Calvary Church app and you can kind of catch up with it
- 4:12here. And that was called the
- 4:14formative years. And that was from David's birth
- 4:17to the the time that he was anointed by Samuel.
- 4:22But now we're looking at the fighting years because things
- 4:25are going to change in David's life, not because he's purposing
- 4:29it to change, but because God is shifting things around.
- 4:36The King Saul had proven himself disqualified to lead the nation
- 4:40by his continual disobedience to the Lord's commands.
- 4:45And although he was a man's man, a hero of the nation, a mighty
- 4:49warrior fighting off the Philistine armies, his outward
- 4:53life was not sufficient to fulfill the inward spiritual
- 4:57requirements that the Lord demanded of him.
- 5:01Therefore, the Lord sought for a man after his own heart who
- 5:05would do all his will. And sometimes we, you know, we,
- 5:11we take the world's picture of what a man's man is or what a
- 5:17real hero is, and, and it's so different than what God looks
- 5:21at. And to be a person after God's
- 5:25heart, how do you find out what he really wants?
- 5:32Because he doesn't go through the world's social acceptance
- 5:37levels. He has his own standard.
- 5:40And it has to do with the heart, has to do with what's going on
- 5:44inside the person. Because you can go through all
- 5:48kinds of religious activities and your heart be far away.
- 5:53I mean, I, I grew up in the Methodist Church and I, I know
- 6:00that I, I guess salvation was presented somewhere along the
- 6:03line, but it didn't connect. It was a kind of a church where,
- 6:09you know, you had Sunday school at 9:30 in the basement and then
- 6:1311:00 you had to attend church with the whole family.
- 6:17And I was so bored that I would take the offering envelope and a
- 6:24pencil and take my dad's watch and I would mark off every time
- 6:29the second hand went around once.
- 6:33That's a bored little kid. I didn't get much out of it, but
- 6:38the Lord was watching. I had no idea I'd be doing what
- 6:43I was doing, but God. And you know, in his wisdom, he
- 6:47didn't tell me because I probably would have said, Nah,
- 6:50Nah, that's not me. Well, yeah, it is actually.
- 6:55So God found that young man David as a teen, and the Lord
- 7:01sent the judge, prophet Samuel, to Bethlehem to discover him and
- 7:06to anoint him to be the next king.
- 7:09Secretly, Samuel, I do not believe, told David or his
- 7:15family why that anointing happened because Samuel was even
- 7:20terrified of going there because he said, if Saul finds out, he
- 7:24will kill me. And so I don't think Samuel
- 7:28really told, you know, the family.
- 7:31Oh, by the way, don't tell anybody.
- 7:32I just don't think that's what's going to happen.
- 7:35And so David's brothers saw this when when David had to be
- 7:42brought in because he was left out with the sheep.
- 7:46And and so David comes in, and the Lord says to Samuel, it's
- 7:51not that Samuel said, that must be him.
- 7:53No, the Lord said to Samuel, that's him.
- 7:57And I want you to anoint him with oil in the midst of his
- 8:02brothers. And then everybody went back
- 8:06home, and David was dripping with oil.
- 8:14No one knew except Samuel, but that anointing changed
- 8:18everything in David's life. Once that anointing came upon
- 8:23David, all the sudden things, there was a major paradigm shift
- 8:29in David's life. It's not that he could put his
- 8:32finger on it, but all the sudden things began to happen, and
- 8:36things were happening in the Kingdom because the Holy Spirit
- 8:40left King Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord, a
- 8:46distressing spirit, as it's called in scriptures, was put
- 8:50upon Saul, and Saul went through the worst time in his life.
- 8:59And so we don't know the exact reason, but when you look at the
- 9:02context of what all that went on, I believe God was trying to
- 9:08humble Saul to let go of the Kingdom because it was no longer
- 9:13his. But he wouldn't humble himself.
- 9:15And so he dealt with the distressing spirit from the
- 9:18Lord, and nothing but a person playing a harp would settle his
- 9:26spirit. He refused to humble himself
- 9:30till the end of his life and he died in battle.
- 9:33King Saul sing King Saul is a picture of what not to do King
- 9:41Saul is also a picture of what happens when you're fighting
- 9:45with the Lord and you're holding on to position for the sake of
- 9:49your own identity. And it just gets worse and worse
- 9:53and worse. In the meantime, he is leading
- 9:55the armies. God is still using him, but he's
- 10:00not honoring the Lord. I'm going to take tonight's
- 10:04study. I'm going to divide it into
- 10:06three parts. The first part is called finding
- 10:10himself in the King's court, and this is David finding himself in
- 10:14the King's court. And that's First Samuel 16,
- 10:18verses 14 to 23. Those of you taking notes #2 the
- 10:23second part is facing the giant Goliath, and that's chapter 17
- 10:29of First Samuel. And the third part of tonight is
- 10:33called fighting the King's battles, and that's First Samuel
- 10:3618. So in First Samuel 16, let let's
- 10:42start off here with this first section here finding himself in
- 10:46the King's court. Understand, David didn't put his
- 10:50heart playing on YouTube, OK? He was just by himself before
- 10:56the Lord out in the field at night.
- 10:59It was amazing. No lights, the sky was awesome.
- 11:04And he just let his heart be released before the Lord.
- 11:10He's by himself. I mean, you know, when you're by
- 11:12yourself. Well, let's just say you're in
- 11:14the car and the windows are up. You can sing as loud as you want
- 11:17as long as nobody's at the stoplight next to you, you know,
- 11:20gawking at you. But you're driving down the road
- 11:23and you can just sing as loud as you want, or you should.
- 11:30That's what David was doing out there, watching the sheep,
- 11:32caring for him, keeping an eye out for things, but just
- 11:37releasing his heart to the Lord. The Lord was listening.
- 11:45And, you know, sometimes we just cannot see how very detailed God
- 11:53is with us. And there's so many things we
- 11:57don't understand about us. And we have a big, the big why,
- 12:02why, why, why God? I want an answer.
- 12:05Why? Well, he's got an answer.
- 12:09But the odds are if he told you, you probably would say, well, I
- 12:12don't agree with that. I mean, it'd be a big argument.
- 12:15And so he just holds it to himself in his wisdom.
- 12:19There'll be a season when you will grow to understand God is
- 12:26involved in the details of our lives behind the scenes.
- 12:31It's true regarding what takes place in our lives, even in the
- 12:35job we end up getting or even the people we meet.
- 12:40As I've said in another study, I used to be super shy and I
- 12:47didn't talk much. And, you know, I liked high
- 12:50school drama because then you could be somebody you weren't
- 12:53and then you could just, you know, let it all out, which
- 12:57didn't always work. But then I met my chatty
- 13:02girlfriend in high school. And so she did all the talking
- 13:07for me. And as we as we grew in our
- 13:11relationship, she finally said, how come you don't say anything?
- 13:14And I said, well, there's, there's nothing to say.
- 13:16I mean, I'm fine. Yeah, but you don't say
- 13:19anything. Well, I'm listening.
- 13:22Why don't you just say something?
- 13:24OK. What would you like me to say?
- 13:27It's not, you know? And I'm.
- 13:28I'm just like, loser, you know? Why?
- 13:30Why? Why is she going with me?
- 13:34But it worked out 55 years. Come on.
- 13:41And people ask me, how do you stay married that long?
- 13:45I'm not getting myself in trouble here.
- 13:47OK? How do you stay married that
- 13:49long? It's called communication and
- 13:53forgiveness again and again and again and again and seeking the
- 14:02Lord together. Well, getting back to David,
- 14:09here we are in First Samuel 16 in verse 14.
- 14:18But the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a
- 14:21distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.
- 14:25And Saul's servant said to him, surely A distressing spirit from
- 14:28God is troubling you. Let our master now command your
- 14:32servants who are before you to seek out a man who was a
- 14:35skillful player on the harp, and it shall be that he will play it
- 14:40with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is
- 14:43upon you, and you shall be well. So Saul said to his servants,
- 14:47Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.
- 14:52Then one of the servants. I want you to underline this.
- 14:57One of the servants, somebody who wasn't real popular,
- 15:01somebody who wasn't out of talent scout, it was just one of
- 15:05the main servants in Saul's house.
- 15:09Then one of the servants answered and said, Look, I have
- 15:12seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in
- 15:17playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech,
- 15:21and a handsome person, and the Lord is with him.
- 15:25Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, Send me your
- 15:29son David, who was with the sheep.
- 15:32And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and
- 15:35a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul.
- 15:40So Saul came to David and stood before him, and he loved him
- 15:44greatly, and he became his armor bearer.
- 15:47Then Saul sent to Jesse saying, Please let David stand before
- 15:51me, for he has found favor in my sight.
- 15:54So it was whenever the Spirit from God was upon Saul that
- 15:59David would take a harp and play it with his hand.
- 16:02Then Saul would become refreshed and well and the distressing
- 16:06spirit would depart from him. Now here's a picture of of those
- 16:12kind of harps. Back in those days, according to
- 16:15archaeological finds and and different descriptions, it
- 16:19looked like this. Now this only has five strings.
- 16:22A lot of them had 12. It's a 12 string harp, but you
- 16:26could pluck it and you could tune it.
- 16:30Where did David get the skill when he was by himself with the
- 16:35Lord? Just time picking out his own
- 16:39melodies, picking out his own tunes, expressing his heart to
- 16:45the Lord, and skill was developing and he had no idea
- 16:53that he would be brought into the King's court, but God knew.
- 16:59Sometimes again, we just don't know how God is in the details
- 17:03in our life. We don't see the connection.
- 17:07We're just living life. We're just taking care of this
- 17:11and something set before us. So we're trying to, you know,
- 17:14take care of things and all the sudden there's a connection for
- 17:17the future. And I just want to tell you, God
- 17:20has not done with you in your life.
- 17:24No matter how old you are, no matter how young you are, no
- 17:28matter what's happened, no matter how you've failed, no
- 17:31matter how you've just blown your testimony.
- 17:34And where do I go from here? God is in the details.
- 17:39He knew all that when he called you.
- 17:41You're not a surprise to him. You are a piece of work, but
- 17:45you're not a surprise to God. And so he knows what to do with
- 17:50the likes of you, with the likes of me.
- 17:54But we don't have to figure it out.
- 17:55We just have to walk through life and then all of a sudden
- 17:59things start coming together. He had no idea.
- 18:03He had no desire to be in the King's court, you know, playing
- 18:06his harp. But the Lord put him there on
- 18:10purpose because it was God's plan that David start being
- 18:16brought into places that God was going to have him be in much
- 18:21later. And I want you to think about
- 18:24this because David had the first hand view of what it looked like
- 18:34to be in a position of authority and be disobedient to the Lord
- 18:39and have the evil spirit and have the evil spirit be upon
- 18:42you. He caught that first hand.
- 18:47And don't you know the Lord was preparing him for later on?
- 18:52Because later on in his life, probably in his 50s, early 50s,
- 18:57he pulled off that thing with Bathsheba.
- 19:02And you hear him in his grief after he finally repented over
- 19:10in Psalm 51, verses 10 through 12.
- 19:13Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast
- 19:18spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your
- 19:22presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
- 19:29Because he had when he was young, he got a first hand freak
- 19:32out of what that looked like. Restore to me the joy of your
- 19:37salvation and uphold me by your generous spirit.
- 19:42Man, I've had too many colleagues in ministry over the
- 19:44years sabotage their testimony and their legacy by a moment of
- 19:50folly. Even with just a secret one
- 19:53night stand, it's been a a a poignant reminder to me, a
- 19:57warning to me in ministry to finish well, because a little
- 20:03folly will destroy it. Let's go on now, chapter 17.
- 20:13David is going to walk into something he didn't know he was
- 20:17going to walk into. He was just doing life, but God
- 20:21was in charge. You see, when the Holy Spirit
- 20:23comes on your life, God has a purpose.
- 20:26He, he brings a power. When the men do their study,
- 20:30they're going to talk about the effect of the, of the baptism
- 20:33with the Holy Spirit and the power of God being upon you to
- 20:37carry out what he has for you to do.
- 20:40And and there's a certain confidence, there's a certain
- 20:42boldness, there's a certain energy dynamic that comes with
- 20:48that in service to the Lord and service to the body of Christ,
- 20:53just like what was happening with David here, as we'll see
- 20:56here. Turn to first Samuel 17, verse
- 21:0012. We're not going to cover every
- 21:03single verse about the David and Goliath story.
- 21:06You can look at that on your own.
- 21:07But I do want to take a look at a few verses.
- 21:10So follow along with me starting in verse 12 in the middle of
- 21:17this description of the battle. It says now David was the son of
- 21:22that Ephrathite of Bethlehem, Judah, whose name was Jesse, who
- 21:27had eight sons, and the man was old, advanced in years in the
- 21:31days of Saul. The three oldest sons of Jesse
- 21:35had gone to follow Saul to the battle.
- 21:38The names of the three sons who went to the battle were Eliab,
- 21:41the first born next to him, Abinadab, and the third Shama.
- 21:46David was the youngest, and the three oldest followed Saul.
- 21:50But David occasionally went and returned from Saul, playing his
- 21:54harp to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
- 21:58So he was just doing life. He was doing what was set in
- 22:00front of him. It's kind of cool being in the
- 22:02King's court, you know, that's all this magnificence.
- 22:05And my guess is because Saul doesn't recognize David is that
- 22:11he could have been behind his sheet out of honor, not seeing
- 22:15first hand the king in his worst situation.
- 22:21So here's David verse 16. And the Philistine Goliath drew
- 22:28near and presented himself 40 days morning and evening.
- 22:32Now think about this. Here's the two armies, the
- 22:36Philistine army on one hill and the armies of Israel on another
- 22:41hill. And they come down and the
- 22:43battle took place in the valleys, not on top of the
- 22:46mountains. They were waiting there 40 days
- 22:50over a month, and nobody was. Nobody was risking their life
- 22:54from Israel, not even David's oldest brothers, not even
- 22:59Jonathan, Saul's son. So this was a stalemate for 40
- 23:05days. And so continuing on her verse
- 23:1017, then Jesse said to his son David, take now for your
- 23:14brothers and ephah of this grained dried grain and these 10
- 23:18loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp and carry these 10
- 23:22cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your
- 23:26brothers fare and bring back news of them.
- 23:30Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the valley
- 23:33of Elah fighting with the Philistines.
- 23:35So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a
- 23:38keeper, and took the things and went as Jesse had commanded him.
- 23:42See, he was just doing life, just being obedient.
- 23:46He didn't have any expectation. Oh, it's going to be cool seeing
- 23:49them and watching what's going on.
- 23:51Sure, but he had no idea what he was walking into and it says
- 23:58they're in verse 20 and he came to the camp as the army was
- 24:01going out to fight and shouting for the battle for Israel in the
- 24:05Philistines had drawn up in battle array.
- 24:08They had come down up to a point and stopped army against army,
- 24:14and David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper
- 24:18and ran to the army and came and greeted his brothers.
- 24:23Then as he talked with him, there was the champion, the
- 24:27Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies
- 24:31of the Philistines, and he spoke according to the same words.
- 24:35So David heard them, and all the men of Israel, when they saw the
- 24:39man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid.
- 24:44So the men of Israel said, have you seen this man who has come
- 24:48up? Surely he has come up to defied
- 24:50Israel, and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will
- 24:55enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give
- 25:00his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel.
- 25:05Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, What shall
- 25:09be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away
- 25:13the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised
- 25:17Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
- 25:22And the people answered him in this manner, saying, Well, so
- 25:25shall it be done for the man who kills him.
- 25:28Now Eliab, his oldest brother, heard when he spoke to the man,
- 25:32and Eliab's anger was aroused against David.
- 25:35And he said, Why did you come down here, and with whom have
- 25:38you left those few sheep in the wilderness?
- 25:41I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you
- 25:44have come down to see the battle.
- 25:47And David said, What have I done now?
- 25:49Is there not a cause? And he turned from him toward
- 25:53another soldier and said the same thing.
- 25:56And these people answered him as the first ones did.
- 26:01Now I want you to know, David walked into a divine appointment
- 26:07and he had no idea what he was walking into the middle of.
- 26:12He was just going to deliver the gifts to check on his Bros
- 26:16because his dad wanted them to, and all the sudden he's in the
- 26:21middle of a divine appointment. A divine appointment is when we
- 26:26discover that the situation before us was not random or
- 26:30coincidental at all, but it was set up by the Lord for His
- 26:35purposes. A divine appointment.
- 26:40That's when God shows his fingerprint, his little
- 26:43signature. Boy, we had that.
- 26:46I remember in 2012 when I, when I lost my passport, northern
- 26:51Italy and we had to kind of find our way to get to, I mean, I
- 26:58lost everything. And so how was this going to
- 27:00work? And we came to Munich, turn the
- 27:05turn the rental car in and we had to cancel the, the, the
- 27:09tickets because I didn't have a passport.
- 27:11I got stolen and the the lady said, where did you come from?
- 27:16I said, well, I came from Italy. You, you pass through three
- 27:19countries without a passport. You know, you're illegal.
- 27:24And I went, yeah, well, that's a problem, isn't it?
- 27:27Yeah. They said you need to see the
- 27:30German police. You know, their their station is
- 27:34right over here in the airport. So I'm going.
- 27:36Well, OK, here we go. And so I went to checked in with
- 27:40the German police and they just were super angry.
- 27:44Good thing I didn't really do good in German and 8th grade
- 27:48because I didn't hear, I didn't understand what they were saying
- 27:50so much. But then they said you need to
- 27:56leave right now, you need to go home.
- 27:59I says, well, I don't have a passport to even buy a ticket.
- 28:01I said, well, you need to get a passport.
- 28:02That's going to take at least two weeks, at least two weeks.
- 28:05And where was I going to go ahead and know anybody in
- 28:08Munich? And I'm, I'm, I'm standing there
- 28:12and my wife couldn't even come into the room.
- 28:14They kept her away. And all of a sudden I remembered
- 28:20a random incident two weeks before when this lady came up to
- 28:26me at a conference and said, hey, have you ever come to
- 28:31Munich, Germany? Here's my husband's cell number.
- 28:35Could you just, you can just call him.
- 28:39And I thought, I'm not, you know, that's fine.
- 28:42Thank you. I put it in the file and I never
- 28:44thought about it until I'm facing these police officers and
- 28:48all of a sudden I got to call them.
- 28:54I just call that a divine appointment actually, because
- 28:57God was in the details without me knowing the detail.
- 29:01Does that make sense? And he wants to work in our
- 29:05lives that way. The job that you have that you
- 29:09don't like, God is in the details.
- 29:13There's a reason you're there. I don't know why you're there,
- 29:18but there's a reason you're there.
- 29:19And God knows what that reason is.
- 29:24All those purposes of God are at work in our life behind the
- 29:29scenes. And we can trust that God is
- 29:34working when we don't understand what's going on.
- 29:39And that's a step of faith on your part and my part.
- 29:44When we had to move back from England back in 2019, we didn't
- 29:50want to come back. We didn't feel we were done.
- 29:54But the Lord knew that my timing is better than yours, so you
- 30:00need to move back now. And so grumbling we did.
- 30:09And then COVID hit six months later and all of a sudden some
- 30:15of the reasons why he wanted us to move back from England and
- 30:20started making ton of sense. And then you say, you know, God,
- 30:24you're pretty smart. You know, you're pretty smart.
- 30:29By the way, when you're looking at David here, you know what
- 30:31he's doing. He's using the gift of
- 30:33exhortation, the gift of exhortation, even though he's a
- 30:39he's a maybe an older teen at this time, but he's he's trying
- 30:44to stir faith and courage in these soldiers.
- 30:48He goes, don't you see what the king is going to do if you fight
- 30:53this guy? And when do you realize that how
- 30:55that's a bonus? You just won the lottery, man,
- 30:58this is great. Why don't you get it?
- 31:00And they didn't get it. He was as a gift of exhortation.
- 31:05The Holy Spirit was working on him.
- 31:07We're and we're called to exhort one another daily.
- 31:10What it's called today. When you see someone just
- 31:14hedging and not wanting to take a step of faith and, and just
- 31:18walk in the commands of the Lord and do what's right, you can
- 31:21come and just encourage them and say, listen, you know God will
- 31:24show up. God will be with you.
- 31:26Just trust him. That's the gift of exhortation
- 31:28to to exhort means to pull out. So he didn't allow the opinion
- 31:36of others to affect his relationship with God, even when
- 31:40his older brother chided him like probably he did for his
- 31:43whole life. And so then he says, I, I, I
- 31:54love this next section here starting in verse 31.
- 32:01Let me just read through this and I'll stop in a second.
- 32:03Just follow along with me. Now when they heard the words
- 32:08which David spoke, they reported them to Saul and he sent for
- 32:13him. Then David said to Saul, let no
- 32:16man's heart fail. Because of him, your servant
- 32:18will go and fight with his Philistine.
- 32:21And Saul said to David, you're not able to go against this
- 32:24Philistine to fight with him for your youth.
- 32:27And he a man of war from his youth.
- 32:30But David said to Saul, Your servant used to keep his
- 32:33father's sheep. And when a lion or a bear came
- 32:37and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and
- 32:42struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth.
- 32:45And when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard and
- 32:50struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both
- 32:54lion and bear. And this uncircumcised
- 32:57Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he's defied the
- 33:00armies of the living God. Moreover, David said the Lord
- 33:05who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the
- 33:09bear, he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine man.
- 33:17I mean was this a cooked up story or did this really happen?
- 33:23Well here's a thought. You remember what happened in
- 33:25the story? Was Samson back in Judges with
- 33:29the Holy Spirit came upon him? Remember the time when a lion
- 33:33came out against him and the scripture says he took that lion
- 33:38and ripped it apart like it was a young goat because of the
- 33:41Spirit of God upon him? I wonder if this lion and bear
- 33:47incident happened after he was anointed by Samuel and the
- 33:51Spirit of God came on him and it became like a testimony for
- 33:56what's later to happen right here.
- 34:01Do you know that God's testimonies in your life are to
- 34:04prepare you for what's ahead later?
- 34:07Don't forget the testimonies of God in your life, how He worked
- 34:12in your life, how He stirred courage and faith to take steps
- 34:15of faith in your life. And by the way, I do think David
- 34:20had scars. Personally, I think he had scars
- 34:24from this battle. But those scars were victory
- 34:30scars because they were reminders of how God delivered
- 34:34him. And I just want to say sometimes
- 34:39the scars we receive in the House of our friends where you
- 34:44get stabbed in the back, where someone slanders your character,
- 34:47someone takes the credit for what you did at your job, or
- 34:51your boss is trying to drive you out and get you to quit.
- 34:58Those are scars or things that happened at home or things that
- 35:02were said to you by from your parents toward you, belittling
- 35:06you, running you down. Yeah, those are scars, but when
- 35:11God comes and delivers you from that, those scars are to be
- 35:17victory scars. They are.
- 35:20They are reminders of how God delivered you.
- 35:25There are two ways we can view those scars #1 we can try to see
- 35:29them as a continual proof of how badly we were treated, or #2 we
- 35:37can see them as victory scars, A continual proof on the power of
- 35:42God to deliver us even in our deepest trials.
- 35:48And I want to leave you with this picture on this point.
- 35:51Jesus still has the scars from his crucifixion.
- 35:59After he rose from the dead, he told Thomas, look at my hands,
- 36:06look at my side. Do you know Jesus will have
- 36:11those scars for eternity because they are the proof of the
- 36:15victory won. And who put those scars there?
- 36:18We did by our sin. Don't you think he has a case
- 36:24against us? No, He's forgiven us and he's
- 36:29our high priest and these scars are victory scars with our Lord.
- 36:35And when we see him face to face, we will see him as a lamb,
- 36:40lamb that had been slain like John saw in the Book of
- 36:44Revelation. So now we see David getting
- 36:50ready to slay the giant and we'll go through it here real
- 36:54quickly in verse 2737. And Saul said, Did David go when
- 37:01the Lord be with you? So Saul clothed David with his
- 37:05armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head, and he also
- 37:09clothed them with a coat of mail.
- 37:11David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he
- 37:14had not tested them. And David said to Saul, I cannot
- 37:18walk with these, for I've not tested them.
- 37:20So David took them off. Then he took his staff in his
- 37:24hand, and he chose for himself 5 smooth stones from the brook,
- 37:28and put them in the shepherd's bag in a pouch which he had, and
- 37:32his sling was in his hand, and he drew near the Philistine.
- 37:36So the Philistine came and began drawing near to David, and the
- 37:40man who bore the shield went before him.
- 37:43And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he
- 37:46disdained him, for he was only a youth, Ruddy and good looking.
- 37:51So the Philistine said to David, Am IA dog, that you come out to
- 37:55me with sticks. And the Philistine cursed David
- 37:58by his gods. And the Philistine said to
- 38:01David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of
- 38:04the air and the beasts of the field.
- 38:06Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with
- 38:09a sword, and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to
- 38:12you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of
- 38:15Israel, whom you have defiled. This day the Lord will deliver
- 38:20you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head
- 38:24from you. And this day I will give the
- 38:27carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the bird of the
- 38:30heirs and the beasts of the field, that all the earth may
- 38:33know that there is a God in Israel.
- 38:36Then all the assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with
- 38:40spirits and sword, for the battle is the Lord's, and He
- 38:44will give you into our hands. Continuing on verse 48.
- 38:48So it was when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to
- 38:52meet David that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet
- 38:57the Philistine. Then David put out his hand in
- 39:01his bag and took out a stone, and he slung it and struck the
- 39:04Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his
- 39:08forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.
- 39:11So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling, and a
- 39:15stone struck the Philistine and killed him.
- 39:18There was no sword in the hand of David.
- 39:20Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his
- 39:24sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut
- 39:27off his head with it. Yeah, this is a kind of a bloody
- 39:31mess, eh? OK, When the Philistine saw that
- 39:35their champion was dead, they fled.
- 39:37Now the men of Israel and Judah rose, shouted, pursued the
- 39:40Philistines. OK, everything went fine.
- 39:43David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to
- 39:46Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.
- 39:49And then verse 55, when Saul saw David going out against the
- 39:54Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army.
- 39:57Abner, Whose son is this? Abner said, As your soul lives,
- 40:01O king, I do not know. And so the king said, Inquire
- 40:05whose son this young man is. Then, as David returned from the
- 40:09slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him
- 40:11before Saul with the hand of head of the Philistine in his
- 40:16hand. And Saul said to him, Whose son
- 40:19are you, young man? And David answered, I am the son
- 40:22of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
- 40:25And let's just do three more verses.
- 40:27Chapter 18. Now when he had finished
- 40:31speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of
- 40:35David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
- 40:39Saul took him that day, would not let him go home to his
- 40:42father's house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a
- 40:46covenant because he loved him as his own soul.
- 40:50And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to
- 40:54David with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his
- 41:00belt. It's interesting that David
- 41:05refused Saul's armor, but he did accept Jonathan's armor.
- 41:12Jonathan was a man of faith, but his faith was weak.
- 41:18But Saul was a man of the flesh, and his armor represented the
- 41:22strength of the flesh. And here we see David choosing
- 41:27to accept Jonathan's armor. And sometimes, sometimes we want
- 41:35to be like somebody else. We want to trust in what they
- 41:41look like, but I want to tell you that God wants you like you.
- 41:49He wants you anointed with the Holy Spirit because He wants to
- 41:53use you as you are, not to leave you there, but to change you and
- 41:58to work in you and to work through you.
- 42:02But it has to be done with trusting in the Lord and not in
- 42:06your superior externals that you're trusting in.
- 42:12And sometimes it's hard because the world exalts those
- 42:17externals. You got to look a certain way.
- 42:20You got to you got to have the right heritage.
- 42:23You got to, you know, be raised and you know, with the right
- 42:26resources and, and on and on. But how does the Lord want to
- 42:29use you when the Holy Spirit comes on your life?
- 42:33It's not to destroy your personality.
- 42:36It's to give life to it. God doesn't want to change you
- 42:40into a zombie. God wants to take you with your
- 42:44personality and who you are and he wants to breathe on you and
- 42:48give life to you so that you become a blessing in these last
- 42:54days in this generation. Those of you that are older, God
- 43:00wants to use you're still in this generation.
- 43:03Those that of you that are younger, you've got to listen to
- 43:07some of the older folks because they know a thing or two.
- 43:11They've been around the horn. They're not just old fogies.
- 43:16Listen to them, ask them, humble yourself going, what would you
- 43:20do in this situation? God has brought the body of
- 43:24Christ together as an intergenerational community and
- 43:29it's important that we respect one another because God wants to
- 43:33work with us as a unit, as a whole, as a family.
- 43:41Now in chapter 18, you can go ahead and read through the rest
- 43:44of it. Here we find that.
- 43:48And just in summary, the king started getting jealous of David
- 43:54when he heard the top, the top song.
- 43:59Saul is slain as thousands and David his 10 thousands.
- 44:03And of course, the young ladies were singing it.
- 44:05And that irritated Saul because he was a man of pride and he
- 44:10eyed David from that moment on. And all the sudden Saul the king
- 44:17started developing means for David to get killed by the by
- 44:21the enemy to take him out. So he put him as head over 1000
- 44:27soldiers to go out and fight the Philistines.
- 44:30But everywhere David went, the Holy Spirit brought victory
- 44:34everywhere. And that irritated the Saul
- 44:37great, the king, greatly. And then there's this issue of
- 44:44marrying his daughter. And you can read it there in
- 44:48chapter 18. And the whole purpose that Saul
- 44:53had of of now of David marrying his daughter is to make him
- 44:57distracted so that he'll have his mind on other things and
- 45:01he'll get killed in battle. Because by the way, battles in
- 45:04this time wasn't just you're in a safe tank, you know, shooting
- 45:08things out. This is hand to hand gruesome
- 45:12sword hands, arms, heads, ears being chopped off as you're
- 45:18swinging around and, and, and the battle is going hand to
- 45:21hand. Here is David in a season of his
- 45:29life where God is being so victorious in all the enemies
- 45:36that he's meeting, but the one thing he can't understand is why
- 45:42is the king so mad at me? Sometimes when you are walking
- 45:53in faith, persecution can rise up from people who don't like
- 46:00what they see. And there are seasons that that
- 46:04happens in our life. Persecution when you're walking
- 46:08in faith is a real thing. And God wants to give you the
- 46:13strength to be a person of integrity and not throw a spear
- 46:19back when a spear is thrown at you.
- 46:27There's so much we have to learn studying the life of David and
- 46:31when we're out of time here this this evening, but I just want to
- 46:35have us remember these three points again.
- 46:39David is just living life, and he finds himself in the King's
- 46:43court after he's anointed. And so things are changing in
- 46:47his life #2 he walks into this battle with Goliath that he
- 46:52never knew was going to happen. And we see his faith being
- 46:56played out in a major way and a major change that God was
- 47:01working in his life. And finally now he's set to
- 47:05fight the King's battles as captain of of 1000.
- 47:09And now the King's heart is becoming more jealous and
- 47:12envious and he wants to do everything to tear him down.
- 47:16But God is David's protector. And right now, I don't know what
- 47:22situation you are in in your life, if there are people
- 47:25against you, but understand God is your protector.
- 47:30And even though you can't figure out how it's going to work, you
- 47:33got to trust the Lord that he's in the middle of the details
- 47:36behind the scenes. And so this evening as we close,
- 47:44if you are in the middle of a battle in your life and you
- 47:49don't know what direction to go, we're going to do something
- 47:54different here. If you're in the middle of a
- 47:57battle and you don't know what to do, you don't know what
- 48:01direction to go, would you let us pray for you as a
- 48:05congregation? But we need to know who you are
- 48:10so that we can pray for you. So this evening, if you're here
- 48:15and you're in that situation, would you just stand so that we
- 48:18can pray for you? We don't need to know the
- 48:21details, but we would like to pray for you.
- 48:24Anybody else? OK.
- 48:27All right. And by standing you're
- 48:32acknowledging to the Lord. I'm in the middle of a situation
- 48:38that is so hard I don't know what to do and I need the next
- 48:42most important thing. Anyone else?
- 48:51All right #2 those of you that are around, those that are
- 48:56standing, could you go over and put your hand on their shoulder
- 49:00and let's pray for them right now, OK?
- 49:02Don't leave anybody standing by themselves.
- 49:15This is a time where we as a congregation can really minister
- 49:18to others that are a part of our family here, OK?
- 49:22Anybody else make sure that nobody's standing by themselves?
- 49:27Join in prayer with me. Father in heaven, we want to
- 49:31thank you for your word to us tonight.
- 49:36And Lord, we want to present to you these that have stood who
- 49:41are saying to you, please God, I need your strategy and your
- 49:45wisdom for what to do in the midst of this drama that I'm in.
- 49:54Father God, you are all wise and you know what you're doing.
- 50:00And so we're asking first of all, God, that you'd calm the
- 50:03storm in the hearts of these that have stood.
- 50:05Calm the storm storm in their heart.
- 50:08Let your peace reign. Stir in them the gift of faith
- 50:13and courage. And God, right now we're asking
- 50:19that also you would provide to them, Lord, in the next days,
- 50:24the next step in how they should trust you, how they should go
- 50:28forward, Lord, work on their life, draw them close to you.
- 50:38And Father in heaven, we entrust them to you, to your throne, and
- 50:44we leave them before you. Thank you for your word tonight
- 50:49in Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 50:53encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
