- 0:00Second Samuel. Chapter 14.
- 0:04And as you're turning there. I can't help but share what I
- 0:08read in my own personal reading. This week, I'm in the Book of
- 0:11Job And there's a part where job describes the Majesty of God.
- 0:19and at the end of his, His displaying of the glories of
- 0:25God. He says something that humbled
- 0:27me tremendously, and I pray that it will humble.
- 0:29You not just humble you, but that it would excite you.
- 0:33I encourage you your own time to read job 26.
- 0:37But at the end of twenty sixth chapter 26, you have to turn
- 0:40there, just listen to what job has to say.
- 0:42He says, in verse 14 of that chapter behold, these are but
- 0:47the outskirts of his ways. And how small a whisper, do we
- 0:52hear of him? And how small a whisper, do we
- 0:56hear of him? Everything.
- 1:00You know about God, everything that you see concerning God, his
- 1:04character, his power, his wisdom is but a whisper just a whisper
- 1:09just a breath. Maybe think Lord, I Want More
- 1:13Than A Whisper. And it made me realize that
- 1:17there's a day coming where it'll be louder than a whisper where
- 1:20we going to have his glory full force and he will give us the
- 1:24necessary mind and body and heart and ability to register
- 1:29all that he is. So everything that you discover
- 1:34week by week day by day, you're seeing through a glass dimly.
- 1:39There is a Time coming where you and I are going to see it
- 1:41face-to-face. See him face to face.
- 1:45And so as we come to this chapter and second Samuel, let
- 1:48us discover The Whispers of God's wisdom, his love.
- 1:53His power has might his grace his compassion, his Justice.
- 2:00And Lord we pray but we pray again, this is this is our
- 2:03desire that we may know you. Lord you are our Shield, you are
- 2:08our glory and you are the lifter of our heads.
- 2:11And God, you give us more joy than they when their grain and
- 2:16wine. Abound, your word is our gold.
- 2:20It is our silver, they are Jewels more precious than all of
- 2:24these things and we ask for that.
- 2:27As we come to this chapter, there will be a special Grace.
- 2:29On the delivery of this word and to be a special Grace upon the
- 2:33study of it, for every heart that is here.
- 2:35Open to receive what you have to say.
- 2:38We give you all glory and honor in Jesus name.
- 2:41Amen. You might be wondering why?
- 2:43I'm not down there and why I'm up here.
- 2:46Just a brief technical thing before we move on.
- 2:49We want to figure out how to handle that.
- 2:50Mike probably every week you hear something from Bible study.
- 2:52But you also hear me say something about buzzing, right?
- 2:55So I don't want to keep repeating myself.
- 2:56So we're going to try to get to that buzzing issue.
- 2:58And until then, we're just Going to be up here for a bit.
- 3:01Let's come to second Samuel. 14 in one chapter spanning over two
- 3:06years in real time. You and I have witnessed the
- 3:11lives of three of David's children.
- 3:15Never be the same drastically and dramatically being altered
- 3:20forever, really Tamar or Tamar David's daughter.
- 3:27Was violated tragically raped and was robbed of her innocence
- 3:34David's, eldest, son. We studied him and we examine
- 3:38his life and realized that he was the one Who violated his
- 3:43sister and was then murdered for his actions.
- 3:48And then from Tamar to eminent we come and we were introduced
- 3:52to a man named Absalom and we looked at him and we realized it
- 3:56Absalom was the one who premeditated the assassination
- 4:00of his half-brother and then and then fled into Exile hoping to
- 4:06escape. Justice.
- 4:11And when we come to this chapter, we have to understand.
- 4:14According to second, Samuel 1338, three more years have
- 4:20passed since Emmons death, that's a long time. but we will
- 4:27realize at the opening of this chapter is that though three
- 4:32years have gone by David's, heart is still disoriented It is
- 4:39damaged. It is caught up in different
- 4:45meditations imaginations. What ifs.
- 4:50And so this man is in shambles just as much as his home is.
- 4:55And so this is a dysfunctional family and it's only going to
- 4:59get worse, unfortunately. And we get the impression of
- 5:04David's condition here in the first verse of chapter 14, I
- 5:08don't want us to read it together.
- 5:10Now, joab, the son of zero. I knew that the king's heart
- 5:16went out to Absalom. This is the essence of the
- 5:20disturbance of a of David's heart.
- 5:23Rather it is for his son, Absalom.
- 5:27It is going out to him. there's a yearning for his son, there's
- 5:32a longing for his son, and it makes you wonder that even
- 5:35though this atrocious Act was committed time does, in fact
- 5:39heal It does help us forget the weight and the sting of certain
- 5:45actions. And so David is really in a
- 5:49place of discomfort and there's a level of of longing for
- 5:55someone that is a part of him though is not with him anymore
- 6:00and he wants to see some level of reconciliation happen.
- 6:04He wants to see some kind of restoration happen.
- 6:07He wants his boy back in his presence.
- 6:14And if you think about it, if this is what this man wants,
- 6:17this father Longs for, he has every authority to be able to
- 6:22send out Messengers and call for Absalom to return from guest
- 6:27Shore. And to, to be brought back and
- 6:31to be brought back into the home, and brought back into his
- 6:34daily activities, and to just move on from life, he has every
- 6:38ability to reassure him that he will Embrace him.
- 6:43And that he will bring him to the place where we can make this
- 6:49as normal as possible. But he doesn't.
- 6:54And the question is why and this is where the Dilemma lies
- 6:59because David here is not just a father who has natural
- 7:03affections for his son. He is also a king who is called
- 7:09to uphold Justice. And to not play favorites and to
- 7:15pledge his Allegiance in his loyalty to God and His law above
- 7:19all and above everyone else. This is the struggle of the man.
- 7:25And though, David is in a very unique position, who is
- 7:30upholding a very unique responsibility, this is a
- 7:36portrait of David's life, in our study of second Samuel, that
- 7:39will teach us, and remind us how it is often very difficult to do
- 7:45the right thing. If you want to know what we're
- 7:49going to be studying tonight, it is that an honest look in the
- 7:54scriptures of how the Holy Spirit reminds us and prepares
- 7:59us that it's not always easy to do that, which is right. and
- 8:07more than just telling us that because many of us understand
- 8:10that already, The holy spirit will also through this text,
- 8:15equip us to know how we can avoid the ensnarement and The
- 8:19Traps, that will try to keep us from pursuing that, which is
- 8:24god-honoring and will help us avoid mistakes, that we will
- 8:28later regret because we fell into some form of deception,
- 8:33that persuaded us to do that, which was wrong thinking, that
- 8:36it would bring about better results.
- 8:40Isn't it difficult to do that? Which we know is right in some
- 8:45cases. There's family Dynamics, there's
- 8:47loyalty there is possible, future altering things that if
- 8:52you do that which is right, it could potentially make you lose
- 8:56on so many fronts. And so there are many times
- 8:59where we come to intersections moments where we try to come up
- 9:02with a plan where we can come as close as possible to that which
- 9:06God demands of us at the same time, Rising as many
- 9:11consequences that would come about from doing that which God
- 9:14calls us to do. It's a Temptation that you will
- 9:17know if you want to follow Jesus and abide by his word, it will
- 9:21eventually come in one way or another.
- 9:24And in David's case he is sitting on his throne day after
- 9:27day night after night. Struggling.
- 9:31Of how to go about this. Do I execute Justice?
- 9:38Against my son. Or do I ignore Justice?
- 9:44And embrace my son. And we are told here.
- 9:50That Joe I picked up on this dilemma Joe.
- 9:54I've was a companion, a very close companion to David.
- 9:58He was his nephew, he was his confidante, he was someone that
- 10:02was in close proximity. David 24/7, really?
- 10:06And he was able to discern that David could not make a decision.
- 10:11And that he felt stuck. And he was in a very sticky
- 10:14situation. And so after learning about
- 10:16this, David is going to be introduced to a different
- 10:21person. And it's really a plan that job
- 10:23is going to come up with. Let's read verse 2 and jobs sent
- 10:26to Toccoa and brought from there.
- 10:29A wise woman and said to her pretend to be a mourner and put
- 10:33on mourning garments. Do not anoint yourself with oil
- 10:37but behave like a woman who has been morning, many days for the
- 10:41dead, go to the king and speak thus to him.
- 10:45So joab, put the words in her mouth.
- 10:52If you feel nervous, that job is orchestrating, something you're
- 10:56justified in feeling a little uneasy.
- 11:01Because we know job enough to realize that he's not the most
- 11:05spiritual among the roster of Israel's Mighty Men.
- 11:12Job was intensely loyal to David.
- 11:15He loved David. He loved supporting and he loved
- 11:20working for him, but at the same time, this man was viciously
- 11:25motivated by self-interest. And when you see job make
- 11:30certain decisions you can't put your finger on it.
- 11:33You don't really know what's going on through his mind all
- 11:35the time. But we've seen again enough to
- 11:38realize that when Joy feels like something could potentially
- 11:41threaten him, he's willing to make dramatic decisions.
- 11:46And in this case, here, we see that this man who does not have
- 11:49a high regard for the law. He already killed two people,
- 11:54rather one, at least that we know of, and he's going to going
- 11:56to kill somebody else very soon. Without a Cause.
- 12:02And now we come here and we realize that he is speaking to a
- 12:06woman with no name no identity and is putting words in her
- 12:09mouth. What is he going to have her say
- 12:14on his behalf? Why is he even doing all of
- 12:19this? Well, one thing's for certain
- 12:21knowing job, whatever is about to be shared.
- 12:24From this woman is not going to be in, accordance to God's word
- 12:29and we're going to learn that very quickly.
- 12:31We have reason to be suspicious and our suspicions will be
- 12:34proven true. So if God's honor is not going
- 12:41to be the aim of job scheme here again, why is he doing this?
- 12:46And here's the thing, we are not told it's not explicitly.
- 12:49Clear why job is going to Great Lengths to now send somebody to
- 12:53send a message to David that has to do, obviously, based on first
- 12:57one with Absalom. Could it be that job understood
- 13:02that there is Judgment looming his over his own head?
- 13:06He has blood on his own hands and maybe he's trying to and
- 13:10some Way project through this situation, some kind of
- 13:15conviction on David so that he would not return Justice on him.
- 13:20It could be, we don't know this job for see.
- 13:23Something with Absalom being far away potentially Brewing up some
- 13:28trouble and wanting to avoid something.
- 13:31And so he wants to try to bring about reconciliation as soon as
- 13:34possible. We already learned that Absalom
- 13:37took his time, it's usually not a good thing because he's
- 13:40brewing. Something could that be the
- 13:42case? Here?
- 13:43Again, we do not know why job is doing this, but as we will see
- 13:50this man does not have the scriptures as a standard does
- 13:52not have God's law in mind and he's going to try to convince
- 13:56David to do the same. So what's going to happen here?
- 14:00Well, before we look at the conversation between this woman
- 14:02and David, we have to understand that job is smart.
- 14:09He is intelligent. I mean, he is the commander over
- 14:12the army. So he has some ability to
- 14:14strategize does this this Ploy of having somebody come to
- 14:21David? to deal with a certain issue
- 14:26with a story because now she's about to present a story, remind
- 14:30you of a past, confrontation, that David experienced Think
- 14:37about it. What kind of messenger came to
- 14:40David, at one point to try to provoke?
- 14:46Some kind of pronounced judgment on something.
- 14:50Nathan, the prophet Nathan the prophet at one point came to
- 14:55David and he had this story that would try to invoke some kind of
- 15:00emotion and then from there pronounced some kind of judgment
- 15:06some kind of charge and that is precisely.
- 15:10What is about to happen. Nathan was successful in that
- 15:13perhaps job realized that Nathan Was able to get something out of
- 15:18David, through that method. And so he wants to now utilize
- 15:21the same tactic. I'm going to have a woman and we
- 15:26were told you that she was very wise, right?
- 15:28She's a wise woman, I'm going to dress her up in a certain way.
- 15:31I'm going to give her a script and let's just see if something
- 15:35will happen to David's heart where he will be able to convict
- 15:39himself like he did when Nathan approach them.
- 15:43And this is a lesson already, the fact that job is imitating
- 15:48Nathan and some way is instructive for us.
- 15:52Concerning how We Face spiritual warfare in some way.
- 15:57What do you mean? Well, the prophet again came to
- 16:01David with a parable and that would produce some kind of sense
- 16:05of justice for him to make some kind of a statement, right?
- 16:10But here we see that job. On the other hand will use such
- 16:13a familiar means, but not to bring about righteousness.
- 16:18It is to bring them to a point where he actually dismisses the
- 16:22law. Instead, of coming to the law,
- 16:26this is now going to encourage him to overshadow that which God
- 16:29commands and to use a different kind of standard to make his
- 16:33decision, concerning Absalom. And if that is true, then this
- 16:39is what we have to learn that the enemy, our enemy, the enemy
- 16:42of your soul and mine. He often disguises himself and
- 16:47imitates. What God has done or what God
- 16:52can do in order to disarm us in a way that would do pus in one
- 16:59way or another. So this is a call for
- 17:02discernment at the sermon that David would unfortunately, lack
- 17:06you. And I have to understand that
- 17:08this woman was described again as wise and depending on the
- 17:11context that can be a good thing or a bad thing.
- 17:14You know, what is the last time or where the last time we were
- 17:17told someone was wise. It was Jonah Dad.
- 17:21We're told that he was a crafty man in 2nd Samuel 13.
- 17:24It's the same word used here, cunning deceptive.
- 17:31Persuasive. Convincing.
- 17:36Job knew exactly who to find to do the job.
- 17:40And you, and I have to understand that.
- 17:42We cannot be fooled by the way. Something or someone is packaged
- 17:48We have to look beyond the surface, we must be able to
- 17:52develop discernment through the truth of God's word and His holy
- 17:55spirit in us. And so, here's the, here's the
- 17:58understanding just because somebody quotes a few verses out
- 18:00of context, it doesn't mean they're right.
- 18:02Just because they hold a Bible. Just because their demeanor
- 18:07seems gentle and kind and compassionate soft.
- 18:11It doesn't matter what kind of testimonies they even provide to
- 18:14try to validate their counsel, or their belief, It doesn't mean
- 18:21they are from God. It doesn't mean it is, right?
- 18:27And so here we see something, very familiar, a righteous man
- 18:31did this at one point but now we have an unrighteous man
- 18:34borrowing the tactics of someone who was of God and is now going
- 18:40to persuade someone through very similar.
- 18:44Tactics to draw, somebody away from God, be very careful.
- 18:49The devil doesn't come to your front door with horns and a
- 18:52pitchfork and a tail. He can have his own Evangelistic
- 18:58Show on satellite television. He can have awesome podcast that
- 19:03reaches the world. They can come to our church and
- 19:07sit in our pews and amen. Bible studies and sing.
- 19:10The same songs, be very careful. Unfortunately, David is not
- 19:15careful. With a pretender.
- 19:19She is a pretender. So now here's what we're going
- 19:22to do. The next set of verses will show
- 19:25us the elements or at least some elements of deception that we
- 19:28must be aware of. Because Unfortunately, they are
- 19:32the very things that will direct a divided, heart to make the
- 19:35wrong decision. Let's read from verse for you,
- 19:38with me verse 4, when the woman of Tekoa came to the king, she
- 19:43fell on her face to the ground. And paid homage and said, Save
- 19:47Me O King. And the King said to her.
- 19:51What is your trouble? She answered a last time, a
- 19:54widow. My husband is dead and your
- 19:57servant had two sons and they quarreled with one another.
- 20:00In the field. There is no one to separate them
- 20:04and one struck the other and killed him.
- 20:07And now the whole clan other translations would say, the
- 20:09whole family has risen against your servant and they say, give
- 20:13up the man who struck his brother that we may put him to
- 20:17death for the life of his brother whom he He killed, so
- 20:20they would destroy the are also, thus, they would quench my coal.
- 20:24That is left and leave to my husband.
- 20:26Neither name nor Remnant on the face of the Earth.
- 20:30Again. Like Nathan's.
- 20:33Parable job is very clever and here's how he's clever.
- 20:36He is fabricating a story to be close enough to David's
- 20:41predicament. So that when he does pronounce a
- 20:45judgment, he would indict himself yet.
- 20:49He makes it different enough for David.
- 20:53Not to be aroused in his suspicions.
- 20:57But instead of Suspicion there would be sympathy, that would be
- 21:00stimulated based on the content of the case that is being
- 21:04presented. And so I want your base on the
- 21:08verses that we just read. I'm actually asking you and I'm
- 21:10going to hear your answers will hear together.
- 21:13Based on this. Remember, the strategy is let's
- 21:16come as close as possible to the real event that happened a few
- 21:19years ago. But let's let's separate
- 21:21ourselves enough. So that David can't catch on.
- 21:24What are some differences? We see the similarities, right?
- 21:28But what are the differences here that are important to point
- 21:31out and I'll tell you why they're important in a moment.
- 21:34What do you see here? You would have to have come the
- 21:38past few weeks to know what the real event was.
- 21:41But for those who have been here or know the story, well, look at
- 21:45these three verses that we just read and think What is
- 21:49different? Yeah, so we have the whole
- 22:10family asking for the one who slayed, the brother to be put to
- 22:14Justice, right? We don't have any indication
- 22:17that that was happening in David's family. well, in the
- 22:22real event where their two brothers, I conflict Now, the
- 22:28way this woman presents, it was that there was a spontaneous
- 22:33combustion. Of some kind of tension and one
- 22:38brother killed. The other on the spot is that
- 22:40what happened in real life? What happened in real life, It
- 22:45was premeditated. That's important.
- 22:50So the woman already here is trying to soften the crime by
- 22:54making it seem as though it was. It was just the Heat of the
- 22:57Moment, the Heat of the Moment, right?
- 23:00Somebody had their hand up. Yes.
- 23:06Yeah, interesting. Right.
- 23:08There were no witnesses. There is nobody who can
- 23:11intervene there was no one who could step in sure.
- 23:20What's the heartbreaking? Part of all the story apart from
- 23:22the murder. She's a widow.
- 23:26She's a widow. She doesn't have a husband.
- 23:30So, our only means of support are her sons.
- 23:34One, son is gone. She has one son left.
- 23:39And if they were to perform this execution, if capital punishment
- 23:45were to be done, she would lose her other son and she would be
- 23:49left alone destitute and in danger.
- 23:54That's an interesting difference.
- 23:58And she even strategically uses the word.
- 24:00Are I think that's the strike a chord and David's heart as well.
- 24:05Who will be the are my husband's name will disappear old vanish
- 24:11from the remnant of the Earth. And so here, we see something
- 24:16that may be similar a real murder took place, but it's
- 24:19vastly different than what David had to deal with.
- 24:23Was Absalom David's only son. Was his only son left?
- 24:29No, he had several Sons. So was David's Kingdom in
- 24:34Jeopardy, was his dynasty going to go extinct even if Absalom
- 24:38was dealt with according to the law.
- 24:40No. But in this story it's it's a
- 24:44pretty serious dilemma but that dilemma is not parallel to the
- 24:48real thing and yet it's being presented for a reason.
- 24:52And here's the thing I was reading this, I was looking at
- 24:54this, I was studying this. I thought here's how you can
- 24:57summarize the strategy of this woman at this point in one word.
- 25:02Exaggeration. Exaggeration.
- 25:07She knows very well with David is dealing with job.
- 25:10Made it known to her. And yet, they blow it out of
- 25:14proportion that the fake stories blown out of proportion.
- 25:17And that is for a reason. She is making David's problems.
- 25:22Seem larger and more drastic than it really is.
- 25:27And when she comes to do this, she is doing so in order to sway
- 25:31his heart. And to convince him.
- 25:36That if he does, make the wrong decision in the estimation of
- 25:41job, then it will cost him very much.
- 25:44And so, this is a, this is a deliberate way of trying to
- 25:50overcome David with something that is not true.
- 25:54It's partly true but it's not completely true and we could
- 25:59even say that she is softening. The brother's murder as
- 26:01something again. I spontaneous when the facts are
- 26:05Absalom thought about it, for two years from the moment that
- 26:08he heard that Tamar Tamar was hurt.
- 26:11He knew he went into that mode of planning something to
- 26:14eliminate his brother. And here's the thing that you
- 26:19and I have to understand with this, some people exaggerate
- 26:22innocently, right? There are just prone to perceive
- 26:24things and to not recall them according to the actual
- 26:30proportion of the issues, And then, there are other people who
- 26:36do so intentionally. And those who do it,
- 26:39intentionally usually do. So in order to accomplish a
- 26:43selfish ambition that would require deceit in order to
- 26:48arrive there. And that goal can be anything
- 26:56from seeking sympathy from others.
- 26:59Or praise from others. So they decorate something in
- 27:05order to pull on the heartstrings a little bit more
- 27:08or excite people a little bit more. and that may seem innocent
- 27:13to us but it can go from there to anything as Extreme as what
- 27:17we see here to try to persuade those in authority to make a
- 27:21judgment that will be in their favor even if it Makes others
- 27:29pay a high price. Embellishing the truth, may seem
- 27:35harmless, but it can be deadly to the undiscerning.
- 27:41And it happens more often than we think, doesn't it?
- 27:44We may be caught ourselves doing it.
- 27:47One of the ways that I've seen it throughout the years of
- 27:50ministry, this is probably the most common way.
- 27:52I've personally seen it. Maybe you would not agree with
- 27:55me but this is just me is that when a case is presented or
- 28:00there's some issue or whatever is going on, it's usually backed
- 28:04up or it's usually introduced with the following so many said
- 28:13or saw or heard the same thing. The majority agree.
- 28:22There is a consensus. and then when you ask well, okay, who you
- 28:29get half a name out of the so many out of the so many that are
- 28:34affected by in. So many that are disturbed by in
- 28:37so many that have seen it. Then you just investigate a
- 28:40little bit and it's really barely anybody.
- 28:45And so we if we're not careful, we can go into that place.
- 28:51Where we try to make something seem more serious more
- 28:58threatening or maybe more successful.
- 29:03More popular than it really is. When in fact that's not the case
- 29:07at all. And this is the thing that you
- 29:10have to understand. That if we're not careful, we
- 29:14can allow others stretch something.
- 29:19To Cloud our judgment, the second element here, apart from
- 29:24exaggeration, is something that you.
- 29:27And I have to very much Take into consideration.
- 29:32Let's go back to the introduction when she first
- 29:34stepped into the throne room. She said, Save Me O King and
- 29:39before that she fell on her face to the ground.
- 29:42Now, how did she look based on the first few verses that we
- 29:45read that she come dressed up? They should come with perfume
- 29:50with makeup. No, she didn't everything.
- 29:52But she was a mourner. She had morning garments.
- 29:55She didn't anoint yourself with oil.
- 29:58She was a mess. This is a costume, right?
- 30:04And with the costume, came a character, she comes in and she
- 30:08just falls to the ground. She's an older woman and this is
- 30:11supposed to from the beginning, cause David to be alarmed and to
- 30:16be shook. And the way she paints her
- 30:20words, the way she colors her circumstance is very, very
- 30:26telling. I mean, look down here at verse
- 30:287 again, and notice how she talks about her her future the
- 30:32bleakness of her future. he says here, thus they would quench my
- 30:37coal that is left like so poetic So desperate, my life has been
- 30:44reduced to one little call and it is ready to be extinguished
- 30:48and lets you O King intervened on my behalf.
- 30:53That's good. That's really good.
- 30:58And so David is his having his heart stirred by the site, by
- 31:03The Sound, by the actions, by the presentation.
- 31:09And so, what's happening here? Well, we talked about
- 31:13exaggeration and now we see that this woman is obviously trying
- 31:18to engage the emotions. To engage the emotions.
- 31:25You realize how powerful your feelings are, do you not?
- 31:28And I am not among those who condemn emotions they came from
- 31:32a good God, for good pleasure. They are a gift.
- 31:38They I they add Dimension to life, they accompany things.
- 31:43Right? But like any good gift that
- 31:46comes from our heavenly father it can be abused.
- 31:48If it is not managed or supervised carefully.
- 31:52And that is exactly what is going to take place in David.
- 31:55The woman is exciting, the faculties of his feelings so
- 32:00that he can do. What make a conclusion based on
- 32:05his emotion, while dismissing the facts of the matter.
- 32:10Ignore the facts, David. The facts are as what we see
- 32:13here. That she says concerning the
- 32:15clan, the clan tan, accordance to the law, have the right to
- 32:19demand for the brother, who killed his brother to be put to
- 32:23death. That's that's the fact, that's
- 32:25the truth. But it was coded.
- 32:31And it was surrounded with this appeal to sentiment.
- 32:38And to compassion and to all these different things.
- 32:44So that he can ignore the facts. Ignore what is demanded. and I
- 32:53think about, How? This is an operation today, if
- 32:59you really are honest, you know that when it comes to evil being
- 33:04tolerated, It often requires emotions to be manipulated.
- 33:10When evil wants to be tolerated, it often requires emotions to be
- 33:17manipulated. Think about all the wicked
- 33:19agendas that are being pushed on our culture today.
- 33:23It just listen closely. Listen closely, and you'll
- 33:27realize that they are baseless arguments.
- 33:30They're not found in logic, they're not found in reason.
- 33:32They're not found in facts, not found in data.
- 33:36It's emotional reasoning. Has no legs to stand on. and
- 33:42yeah, it is working with so many and when you get people to think
- 33:49by what they feel, you can actually bring them to the point
- 33:52where they dismiss what is real. Get them to think by what they
- 33:57feel and they can even disregard.
- 34:00What is real? What is true?
- 34:02What is scientific? What is obvious?
- 34:04What is common sense? You think it what's happening in
- 34:09our world? Why are we seeing what we're
- 34:10seeing? Yeah, it's a great delusion
- 34:12according to Romans 1. We're at the bottom of the
- 34:16barrel, curling, according to God's passive.
- 34:18Judgment sure. But in a practical sense, what
- 34:21we're seeing is the fruit of making your convictions based on
- 34:26your emotions. And depending on who is affected
- 34:32by that, it can have disastrous consequences.
- 34:37And in this case, I mean, I hope you realize how serious this is
- 34:41because depending on what David does, it will affect the future
- 34:44of the nation. And so, we see that this woman
- 34:49is persuading him. Persuading him, with
- 34:53exaggeration persuading him with emotional manipulation.
- 34:57And if you and I are not careful to discern that these same
- 35:01tactics can be utilized on us. On a microscopic level or on a
- 35:07macro level, then we are bound to make silly decisions like
- 35:12David does. What will he end up doing after
- 35:16this? Facade verse 8, then the king
- 35:21said to the woman, go to your house and I will give orders
- 35:25concerning you. Without hesitation.
- 35:30He assures the woman that her guilty son will not be punished.
- 35:34Now, here's the thing we learned earlier that this woman was
- 35:37crafty. And so she would not be
- 35:39satisfied with this general statement because this is what
- 35:42he's essentially saying, okay? Just go home and I'll let you
- 35:45know what I'm going to do. Not happening.
- 35:51So she persist for David to make his settlement more accurate.
- 35:56Look at verse 9 in the woman of Tekoa is set to the King on me.
- 35:59Be the guilt, my Lord, the king, and on my father's house, let
- 36:03the king and his throne be Guiltless.
- 36:07The king said in verse 10, if anyone says anything to you,
- 36:11bring him to me and he shall never touch you again.
- 36:16So she's not satisfied. David gives a more defined
- 36:20resolution and verse 10. And she's still not satisfied.
- 36:24I'm not leaving with that. I'm not going back.
- 36:28I need something more concrete. And so again, look at verse 11,
- 36:34then she said, please let the king invoke the Lord your God.
- 36:38That the Avenger of blood kill no more.
- 36:41And my son be not destroyed. It's like I need you now to make
- 36:47an oath. I'm appealing to a higher Court,
- 36:49a Heavenly court, and I'm asking you now to invoke the name of
- 36:53the Lord. Because there's nothing more
- 36:56binding than that and to, to let me know for certain that my son
- 37:02will not be handed over to the law.
- 37:07What is the ruler Israel do? he said, as the Lord lives, not
- 37:14one hair of your sons shall fall to the ground.
- 37:19David you're in trouble. Without him realizing he
- 37:22compounded his conviction. His own conviction, his own
- 37:26condemnation. And he backed himself up in a
- 37:30corner and guess what, he won't be able to escape, unless he's
- 37:33willing to be Blasphemous and dishonor his oath to God.
- 37:38He stuck, he can't go anywhere from here especially because,
- 37:42the lord's name is now involved. And once the woman saw that
- 37:47David was committed to this case, she turns the table and
- 37:52like Nathan, who at the right time said you are the man.
- 37:56She is now going to reveal what this is really all about.
- 38:01So look at verse 12, then the woman said, please let your
- 38:05servant speak a word to my Lord. The king.
- 38:10He said speak, I'd be nervous. And the woman said, why then
- 38:16have you planned such a thing against the people of God?
- 38:22For in giving this decision the king convicts himself in as much
- 38:26as the king, does not bring his banished one home again.
- 38:32You want to find. So disturbing about this.
- 38:35because, as much as this is the woman whose Standing and facing
- 38:41off with David, it's really joab.
- 38:44And what I find. So disturbing about this whole
- 38:46ordeal is that job is going to Great Lengths to make sure that
- 38:50David is convicted. Like, wouldn't you think you
- 38:55would do that with Absalom instead who's the real guilty
- 38:59one and all of this? It's Absalom and up to this
- 39:03point, three years have gone by, there's no repentance, No
- 39:06Remorse, no regret, no shame, no embarrassment, nothing.
- 39:10This man is hiding away in his pride, waiting for a red carpet
- 39:16to roll out for him to come back into his Palace.
- 39:19And yet job is doing all of this to make an innocent man.
- 39:23In this situation feel guilty, And to repent so to speak.
- 39:32And when you see this, you have to understand that we should not
- 39:36expect anything more from somebody who does not have a
- 39:40submission to the scriptures. When you do not view the world,
- 39:45the way God calls you to view the world.
- 39:49You will have. A distorted understanding of
- 39:53what is right? And what is wrong?
- 39:55Is that not true? And when I looked at this, when
- 39:58I looked at jobs, Behavior, I thought of the verse that is
- 40:02there before Proverbs Chapter 30, the last verse of Proverbs
- 40:0529 reads this An unjust man is an Abomination to the righteous.
- 40:14But one, whose way is straight is an Abomination to the wicked.
- 40:21An unjust man. Somebody who's guilty, somebody
- 40:23who's a sinner, somebody who's a rebel that kind of a person is
- 40:27an Abomination to the righteous. But the one whose way is
- 40:33straight and honorable and on the Narrow Path and In Perpetual
- 40:38agreement to the word of God is actually an Abomination to the
- 40:43wicked. So that same righteous
- 40:46indignation that you sense, concerning sin and Injustice and
- 40:50Corruption those same feelings though.
- 40:53Justify our experience in the hearts of those who are evil
- 40:57towards those who are right. There's such a perversion that
- 41:02occurs when we abandoned God. Everything gets messed up.
- 41:08Enjoy a proving to be such a man.
- 41:13He can look at somebody like David and instead of encouraging
- 41:16to do right challenge him to do wrong and then to even indict
- 41:20him if he doesn't So David is, is hearing this from this
- 41:26messenger, this actress this lady with no name and how do you
- 41:31know that job based on the verses were that were just read?
- 41:34How do you know that joab is not a person who has regard for the
- 41:38scriptures? Look carefully, specifically,
- 41:42Everest 13? What stands out to you?
- 41:47What is the subject of David's guilt, apparently.
- 42:02But more specifically, it's right there in the wording of of
- 42:06the woman. Very good.
- 42:11Why have you planned such a thing against the people of God?
- 42:15You know what he should have said if it was true against the
- 42:18law of God, No, such thing. So in jobs, mine, here's a
- 42:24problem. David, if you do not bring
- 42:27Absalom back, this will affect the morale of the nation and
- 42:31potentially the future of this nation.
- 42:34And so, what is pumping through joab's, veins is purely
- 42:39political It's not about righteousness.
- 42:42It's not about God standard. It's not about what he asked for
- 42:44concerning us. It's about what will happen to
- 42:47the people. So this is not a person who has
- 42:52any mindfulness of God's demands.
- 42:57And that's where you get in trouble.
- 42:59Listen. Hey, do you want to be protected
- 43:01from being deceived? Do you want to be protected from
- 43:04making stupid decisions in life? Can I can I suggest something to
- 43:07you? Don't seek the counsel of people
- 43:11who don't tremble at God's word. I know that there are General
- 43:18things that you can seek even unbelieving people for when it
- 43:23comes to doing that, which is right.
- 43:25I I highly recommend not going to a person who does not ordain
- 43:31their lives under every precept found in this book from Genesis
- 43:35to revelation. Just throw that out there.
- 43:41What will happen to the people of God?
- 43:45Well, here's my main concern, what will happen to God and my
- 43:47relationship with God and his name in his honor.
- 43:50That's a righteous man. That's a righteous woman.
- 43:53That's somebody who will protect themselves from pitfalls in life
- 43:56that they could have easily skipping over.
- 43:59They had just trusted in the wisdom of God.
- 44:01And in verse 14, this woman goes from trying to point out the
- 44:07offense here, to Bringing objective observations into the
- 44:12whole predicament and this Is what she does.
- 44:15Look at verse 14. We must all die.
- 44:18She still talking to David. We are like water spilled on the
- 44:22ground. Which cannot be gathered up
- 44:25again, but God will not take away life.
- 44:28And he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an
- 44:32outcast. So she's continuing to make her
- 44:35case more convincing. She's trying to drive this thing
- 44:38home. And she says, three important
- 44:41things. Here's the first thing that she
- 44:42says, we must all die. We are like water spilled on the
- 44:46ground. What do you think she means by
- 44:47that? Kind of, but you're close.
- 44:55Life is short, David? Life is like spilling water and
- 45:00not only is it short. Once it's over, it's over.
- 45:06If I spill water here on the carpet, you would think I'm a
- 45:09Madman to try to put it back in the cup.
- 45:13And so it's a combination of not only his life short, it's end is
- 45:16unexpected. And once it's over, you can't
- 45:20redo what you need to redo or what you hope to redo and in the
- 45:24context. But she is suggesting is David
- 45:27reconcile before it's too late. Make sure you mend this thing
- 45:32before. The grave calls you are the
- 45:36great calls him and you look back and you think.
- 45:39I wish I had done something. And so, she's appealing to the
- 45:46brevity of life. And our unannounced, expiration
- 45:50date and how we should do, what we need to do to be able to make
- 45:54sure that we are at peace with all men and that when God does
- 45:57call us home, we don't look back and have any regrets.
- 46:02He has a powerful point. But then she says something
- 46:06else. The second thing is, God does
- 46:09not take away life. Consider the context but God
- 46:17will not take away life. What do you think she means by
- 46:21that? It's a little harder to
- 46:23interpret. Here's what I believe that it
- 46:30means that the Lord does not prefer judgement as his primary
- 46:33answer to wrong. The Lord does not.
- 46:40As his first step desire to execute, or to eliminate or to
- 46:45shut the door for Mercy to be experienced first.
- 46:50And in this case, what she's saying, in light of Absalom is
- 46:53listen, if God really wanted to punish Absalom, he would have
- 46:57done it already. He would have just struck him
- 47:02down. He would have sent the plague
- 47:04into his very body. He would have just had him
- 47:06killed but Absalom is still alive.
- 47:11And so up to this point, we have two arguments being with made
- 47:14right life is short, it's brief. Why don't you reconcile before?
- 47:16It's too late it could also mean this look in the same way that a
- 47:20cup is poured out into the dirt and you can't gather it up again
- 47:23Emmons dead. Engines gone.
- 47:27And so even if you do punish Absalom is that going to bring
- 47:31em back? It's not gonna bring in the back
- 47:35and God doesn't take away life. That's not his his primary
- 47:38desire as ambition and dealing with those who are in sin and
- 47:41that's closely tied into her final case, her final point
- 47:45being made and what is that? And he being God, devises means
- 47:51so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.
- 47:55That's a beautiful point. Is it not In other words, God
- 48:00has provided a system. A sacrificial system in order to
- 48:07give the sin and opportunity to experience forgiveness, and
- 48:12Grace and restoration instead of remaining banished and an exile
- 48:17from his presence. And so this final point is very
- 48:21clear. God has done what he could to
- 48:26initiate reconciliation. And to swing his arms, open wide
- 48:31for The Sinner to come. And if God David is willing to
- 48:35do that, why aren't you? Why aren't you?
- 48:43You can just imagine the weight, you can imagine the crushing
- 48:47conviction that this man is feeling.
- 48:51And so, all in all, this is also being said, so that David could
- 48:56urgently and mercifully bring Absalom home.
- 49:02I might disappoint you with this point but you have to stick
- 49:04around to see what I'm about to say, and prove it as kind and as
- 49:11compassionate as warm and fuzzy. All of this may seem there are a
- 49:18couple of things wrong with this picture of forgiveness.
- 49:24What are they? What would you say?
- 49:36What's that? There are consequences.
- 49:40Yes, no repentance that is one for certain.
- 49:46Well, let me ask it this way. Is to try to just steer Us in
- 49:49the right direction. Many have referenced.
- 49:54That verse verse 49, especially the last part as a gospel gem
- 49:58hidden and tucked in an old Covenant text, which is true
- 50:02because it points to God's altar means of bringing the banish one
- 50:08back to his presence. And that means is the man Christ
- 50:12Jesus. That's the foreshadowing here,
- 50:16there has been a device. There has been a plan that God
- 50:21has ordained from eternity past and it is that through the sun,
- 50:27those who have been pushed out because of their sin can now be
- 50:31brought back into fellowship with the Holy One.
- 50:37And as we look at this, we realize that's wonderful.
- 50:41That's true. That's a wonderful way of trying
- 50:44to persuade the hearts of those who are lost to realize they can
- 50:48be found. But here's the problem.
- 50:52This God compromised, his law in order to reconcile us He
- 50:57doesn't. And this is why this is
- 51:00important. This is a gospel truth.
- 51:02You have many people. Who believe the way God forgives
- 51:06is, that he just brushes things. Under the carpet, is the, you
- 51:09know what? I'm just going to take your sins
- 51:11and throw them in the sea of forgetfulness.
- 51:12We're not going to have to deal with it.
- 51:14Let me just wink. Let's just start over.
- 51:17Let's just turn over a new Leaf. Let's just forget it.
- 51:19Ever happened. That's not how God forgives and
- 51:21a popular preacher once said. And I looked it up just to make
- 51:24sure if it's still up there and it's still up there.
- 51:28So it's still a public thing and as pastors who specially deal
- 51:32with the truth and Have to protect people from those ideas
- 51:36that are not true. I have to tell you this, there's
- 51:39a popular Pastor. Maybe you've heard this who said
- 51:41something along the lines of that God broke his law.
- 51:48And the Name of Love. Did you hear it?
- 51:54God broke his law in the Name of Love.
- 52:00And the idea there is that I'm guessing because it wasn't
- 52:03clarified, so you're leaving me to speculate with such a strong,
- 52:06strong commentary of the Gospel that God performs, some kind of
- 52:11Injustice against the sun in order to find a way to forgive
- 52:15all of us and to restore us unto himself.
- 52:21God didn't break his law. To display his love, he
- 52:26satisfied the law, that's the gospel.
- 52:30The wisdom of the Cross is that Justice and mercy kissed, And
- 52:37that God could uphold his Holiness while at the same time,
- 52:41extend his mercy and neither of those attributes were ever
- 52:45compromised one bit. So God did not suspend his
- 52:50Justice in order to see more loving to sinners, no, he
- 52:58satisfied. His wrath in order for us to
- 53:03experience his loving kindness That's the idea.
- 53:10And so to hear what this woman has to say, is partly true that
- 53:14there has been a plan provided a means so that the banished one
- 53:19will not remain an outcast, but not at the expense of the law
- 53:23being ignored or neglected or Worse violated.
- 53:30And so we see here that no moral code was ever ever, ever deleted
- 53:36in order to win our pardon know. He was able to satisfy his
- 53:40Justice while swinging the door of Mercy, wide open for us to
- 53:43come right in But one might object and this is where I want
- 53:49you to be equipped. Well, that sounds nice.
- 53:54But is it really fair for the son of God?
- 53:59To be killed on behalf of those who have sinned themselves and
- 54:04have a record of their own to deal with.
- 54:05Is that really just forgot to send his son into place?
- 54:10The sin of the world from Adam up to the final person who will
- 54:13live before it all ends Can we say that?
- 54:17That is right? How would you answer that?
- 54:22Because that's a common question.
- 54:28Isn't that good? Can I tell you the reason?
- 54:31Can I tell you the answer? It's in one verse and it's one
- 54:34of my favorite statements that Jesus ever made while walking on
- 54:37the earth, John 10 verse 18, no one takes it from me.
- 54:45But I lay it down of my own accord.
- 54:49No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.
- 54:54And then he goes on to say that he has the authority to lay down
- 54:57and he has the authority to bring it right up again.
- 55:00Glory to Jesus Christ. I volunteer my life.
- 55:06I willingly lay down my life. I like Isaac.
- 55:10Isaac, the greater Isaac carry the would willingly.
- 55:15Up to that mountain and lay myself down on that Altar and
- 55:21willingly opened myself up. To the dagger of God to pierce
- 55:28me so that atonement can be made.
- 55:32It realized that Isaac was not 9 years old when he was being led
- 55:36by the father to go up into those mountains of Moriah.
- 55:41He had to be old enough to carry the wood, and if he was old
- 55:44enough to carry the wood and have a conversation with his
- 55:46father, with important observation, how there's there's
- 55:49obviously sacrifice missing, then he also had the strength
- 55:52and the independence to roll off that altar.
- 55:55Once you realize that she is the sacrifice but he didn't.
- 56:01He silently and submissively stayed in place.
- 56:07That's Christ. Now, we can make a case that it
- 56:11is unjust for somebody to be kicking and screaming being
- 56:15pulled by a judge though, perfect to pay for those who are
- 56:20imperfect. But what do you do with somebody
- 56:22who says, A body, you have prepared for me.
- 56:28This is why I've come. I'm saying that I have come to
- 56:32be a ransom for many. Not to be served but to serve.
- 56:39What do you do when the sun enters into our world with the
- 56:42sole purpose of dying? And so we see here that there's
- 56:49something very questionable about how the mercy of God is
- 56:51interpreted. And secondly, we see something
- 56:55else and our brother mentioned it.
- 56:59There is no repentance in all of this.
- 57:03There is no call for Absalom to realize his wrong.
- 57:06And to admit, there's no confession, There's No Remorse.
- 57:09There is no conversation about this, there's no rebuke nothing.
- 57:14What job is say, just bring him back let's just avoid potential
- 57:19problems here. And just bring him back and
- 57:23let's just move on with all this.
- 57:25The longer he stays out there. The more things can come about
- 57:28and let's just cut it. And let's just just deal with
- 57:31this. And I deal with it the way that
- 57:33we should deal with it. There is no evidence from this
- 57:37moment on that Absalom ever does share.
- 57:42Any kind of sense of guilt. He's able to just move on, like,
- 57:47it's nothing and though, listen, you, and I are all called to
- 57:52forgive from the heart. You know that, right?
- 57:55Every single one of us are called to forgive from our
- 57:57heart, but reconciliation is contingent upon repentance.
- 58:06I know that might shock you but it is true.
- 58:08If you want New Testament evidence for that, go to Luke 17
- 58:11on your own time and realized that when Jesus talks about
- 58:14restoring a brother who sins multiple times a day, he
- 58:17includes a word that Luke really likes in his gospel account.
- 58:20It's a word repent. If somebody repents and you
- 58:24rebuke him. And he realizes wrong and vows
- 58:29to turn away from the wrong, then you can embrace them again.
- 58:33Do you know why repentance is important for reconciliation?
- 58:37There are many reasons why and here's one of them because
- 58:39someone who is in the wrong and wants to hold onto their wrong,
- 58:44must learn that they cannot enjoy holy relationships without
- 58:50forsaking corruption first. That is true for between two
- 58:55parties and that is true, even on a local church level.
- 58:58When somebody refuses to repent, The ultimate punishment of
- 59:01somebody refuses to repent and a local church setting is that
- 59:04they are excommunicated. Because in God's wisdom, he will
- 59:09not allow in his love for his child, to think that they can
- 59:12claim the Privileges of the Holy people of God.
- 59:18While placing your address in Satan's territory.
- 59:23Just can't you got to pick one or the other and in hoping that
- 59:26once they go out into the world and they are released into the
- 59:28world, realizing how cold and cruel and ugly.
- 59:31It really is, they would then come back in the church.
- 59:33Should be ready to embrace them again.
- 59:36So we do a disservice to the sanctification of people.
- 59:40If we are willing to continually reconcile with them void of
- 59:44repentance, it's actually more harmful than it is anything
- 59:47else. And what you see here is that
- 59:51reconciliation without repentance.
- 59:55Additionally is a recipe for repeated offense.
- 59:59Can I say that one more time? Reconciliation, without
- 1:00:02repentance is a recipe for repeated, not just repeat it.
- 1:00:04But even growing offense, And so there is a responsibility and
- 1:00:10not to satisfy a niche of the flesh because you and I believer
- 1:00:13have to be ready even multiple times a day.
- 1:00:16According to the words of Jesus that if somebody repents that
- 1:00:20you say I you have my, you have my love, you have my fellowship,
- 1:00:24you have my attention. at the same time, if someone refuses to
- 1:00:30Then you have an obligation to refrain.
- 1:00:35From giving access to that person the way they would want.
- 1:00:38While also wanting their sin. And here's a prime example, if
- 1:00:44we forsake that kind of wisdom it's in 2nd Samuel 14.
- 1:00:48Look at verse 33. Look at how this chapter ends.
- 1:00:54We're not gonna be able to, obviously finish this unless you
- 1:00:55want to stay feel like 11:30. We're not going to do that.
- 1:00:58And second Samuel 14:33. Notice what happens, then Joy
- 1:01:02have went to the king and told them and he summoned Absalom.
- 1:01:06So he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the
- 1:01:10ground before the king and the King kissed Absalom.
- 1:01:16That's a problem. That's a problem.
- 1:01:20This is extremely problematic because Absalom, with all of
- 1:01:24this was still in an unrepented State and the Father Here, gives
- 1:01:29them a kiss of approval, it kiss of Pardon really And that kiss
- 1:01:37permitted, Absalom to have full range, access to the world and
- 1:01:41the life that he knew before he was banished.
- 1:01:45And you know what, you see in a very few short verses after this
- 1:01:49happened, go to chapter 15 and look at verse 6.
- 1:01:53Thus Absalom did to all Israel. Who came to the king for a
- 1:01:57judgment. So, Absalom stole the hearts of
- 1:02:01the men of Israel. Do you know what happened?
- 1:02:05You know, what's going to happen?
- 1:02:06Civil War is going to break out. Civil War is going to break out
- 1:02:12and it had it happened because David was deceived and thinking
- 1:02:16that reconciliation, without rebuke reconciliation without
- 1:02:20repentance, would bring some kind of piece.
- 1:02:23You would think that this gesture would humble such a man.
- 1:02:27and overwhelm him, but instead, He's going to bring more harm
- 1:02:32than he ever did before and instead now only is he going to
- 1:02:37rip a nation? Into shreds, he's going to
- 1:02:41destroy himself. So you see we don't do people
- 1:02:45favors when we give them access to the fellowship.
- 1:02:49The Bible allows us to enjoy when we come together with the
- 1:02:52same cause and the same fight, we don't do people service when
- 1:02:56we say, you can hold onto your sin and still have all of this.
- 1:02:59Now, only are you going to bring more harm to the context of your
- 1:03:02life but to that very person that you're trying to help
- 1:03:08Because Absalom is going to end up dying unrepentant.
- 1:03:16So you see in the same way that God does not Bend Justice to
- 1:03:21bring us to himself, he also does not excuse unrepentant for
- 1:03:26reconciliation sake. So everything about what this
- 1:03:31woman of Tekoa, saying flags flags flags.
- 1:03:37It sounds good, it's very heart moving.
- 1:03:42But it's not completely true. And here's the problem.
- 1:03:47In verse 18, after she continues and concludes her whole spiel.
- 1:03:56Then the king answered the woman do not hide from me.
- 1:03:58Anything I asked you and the woman said, let my Lord the king
- 1:04:02speak then King said is the hand of job with you in all of this.
- 1:04:11So some kind of fog was lifted and he was able to realize makes
- 1:04:17you wanted. This is twice.
- 1:04:18Now it happened right? You had Nathan come with a
- 1:04:20parable like story and then you end up pulling something out of
- 1:04:23you and you get yourself in trouble and now this woman comes
- 1:04:27and sheep. He probably forgot.
- 1:04:28This is not fictitious most likely and so now he's wondering
- 1:04:33There's somebody behind the scenes here and he says his job
- 1:04:38behind all this. The woman answered and said uh
- 1:04:41sure Lea's you live the Lord, the king one cannot turn to the
- 1:04:44right hand or to the left. From anything that my Lord the
- 1:04:46King has said, it was your servant job.
- 1:04:48Who commanded me. It is he put all these words in
- 1:04:51the mouth of your servant. In order to change the course of
- 1:04:55things or serving job job did this but my Lord has wisdom like
- 1:05:00the wisdom of the angel of God, to know, all these things that
- 1:05:02are on the earth. I would say the same thing,
- 1:05:03probably if I realized that, although I got caught, you're
- 1:05:05like the angel of God. You're so wise, you're so
- 1:05:08amazing. Here's, here's the thing, we can
- 1:05:16praise David for his discernment but I can't do that.
- 1:05:20You know why? Because I think his questioning
- 1:05:22was too late. David, you should ask those
- 1:05:27questions before. You should have put aside your
- 1:05:31feelings, you should have put aside your subjective issues and
- 1:05:36reasonings and thoughts and investigated.
- 1:05:42And waited. I see you and I in this day, we
- 1:05:49are called to such wisdom. So happy that Pastor Daniel read
- 1:05:52about wisdom and Proverbs for, I think this is the beauty of
- 1:05:56Bible studies like this. It's extremely practical for
- 1:05:59day-to-day life. And we are living in a day of
- 1:06:03exaggeration. We are living in a day of an
- 1:06:05emotional. Tornado.
- 1:06:10And it's going to demand us to make decisions about our
- 1:06:13convictions about who we fellowship with about what,
- 1:06:15where we go, what we do, what we say, what we don't say.
- 1:06:20And we will get ourselves in trouble, unless we apply the
- 1:06:22wisdom of God's word, to be our shield.
- 1:06:25And to be our filter in this world, And so I look at David
- 1:06:30here and he asked the question, but he's already stuck.
- 1:06:32He can't get out of it. He invoked the name of God and
- 1:06:34so he has to go through with it. So be reminded believer in this
- 1:06:38place that stories like this have been given to preserve us
- 1:06:41from similar mistakes. And that when it does come to a
- 1:06:46point in life, where you have to make the right decision as
- 1:06:50difficult as it may seem realize that in those moments of dilemma
- 1:06:54where you are pondering, what I should do that, the enemy is
- 1:06:58right there to tempt you to make the wrong decision.
- 1:07:02He'll put fear in you. He'll convince you that God's
- 1:07:05law seems inconsiderate and overwhelming.
- 1:07:12He'll try to persuade you that. If you do it this way, which
- 1:07:14violates God's law, it will protect your future and it will
- 1:07:18cause Less Problems. And so in those moments just
- 1:07:24come to the word of God. And and in those moments where
- 1:07:27the word of God gives you the clear answer trust in what God
- 1:07:31had said. If David would have taken care
- 1:07:35of Absalom, there wouldn't have been a civil war.
- 1:07:40If David had taken care of absent if he had, at least
- 1:07:42confronted him potentially, there would have been repentance
- 1:07:45and in David wouldn't have to whoa himself.
- 1:07:49Absalom Absalom. Oh my son and wish that you had
- 1:07:53died instead of him perhaps because you have an idea of
- 1:07:56where he went after he died. So here's the final thought I'm
- 1:08:02giving to you on this Friday night at all times in
- 1:08:05everything. No matter how difficult it may
- 1:08:07seem to do that which is right, do it.
- 1:08:11God's word is true and the result of obedience is always
- 1:08:15better than what you think, might come.
- 1:08:18If you just do it your way, trust in the Lord, he will lead
- 1:08:22you. He will reward you, he will
- 1:08:24bless you in all things at all times.
- 1:08:26Amen, let's pray together. Lord, we humble ourselves
- 1:08:41tonight. I know there's so much meat in
- 1:08:45this chapter. We trust that what you desire to
- 1:08:50speak to our hearts has been accomplished Lord, with all of
- 1:08:57our weaknesses, we pray that what has been presented and
- 1:08:59studied and discussed together would indeed affect us.
- 1:09:06And there we even pray that. For those who will have to face
- 1:09:12difficulty in doing the right thing that this study, will come
- 1:09:16to mind this example in your Eternal Word with surface in the
- 1:09:19Forefront of our thinking. And that we would be encouraged
- 1:09:24to know and equipped to know. That this has happened before
- 1:09:31with many men and women of God. And you have prescribed us
- 1:09:34exactly what we need in order to avoid the worst outcomes.
- 1:09:42And Lord even though we can't see the outcome of our obedience
- 1:09:45help us believe you. And may your honor be our reward
- 1:09:49more than anything else. What we ask for discernment in
- 1:09:55this age, the sermon in our lives?
- 1:10:00we ask that you even helped us not fall into the Trap of
- 1:10:06decorating. Our truths with falsehood so
- 1:10:11that it can be more appealing or convincing but we pray that we
- 1:10:14would not give in to our emotions to determine what is
- 1:10:18right and what is wrong. And we ask Lord that you would
- 1:10:22give us the hunger for the word of God that would help us be
- 1:10:26able to see past the surface of all the the Showmanship around
- 1:10:32us. And so what we give you glory
- 1:10:36tonight for this study we are moved to worship you because
- 1:10:40this is your wisdom given to us. And we are privileged to be
- 1:10:43adorned with these things that will help us glorify you
- 1:10:48tomorrow. And the day after, for the rest
- 1:10:50of our lives, Lord receive our praise because it will be a
- 1:10:53praise of Thanksgiving for the feast that second, Samuel 14 has
- 1:10:58been to us tonight. We bless you now.
- 1:11:01In Jesus name we do. Amen.
- 1:11:03Amen. Shall we stand?
- 1:11:05And give God glory.
