- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like
- 0:12today. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the Australian youth digital media brand
- 0:19Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll
- 0:21everyone. OK for our YouTube audience,
- 0:24every once in a while we get comments from YouTube saying
- 0:27that high stakes and mini scroll is a bit redundant and we got
- 0:30one of those comments today on the new high stakes episode.
- 0:33So I did want to clarify YouTube is obviously a big part of our
- 0:36brand. It's somewhere that we publish
- 0:38every single day. But we are a media company so
- 0:42YouTube is not our primary thing.
- 0:44We are not a YouTube channel. So the YouTube channel is like
- 0:47our podcast network channel where we publish everything but
- 0:51high stakes and mini scroll. If sometimes we do cover the
- 0:54same stories, it's because we're different podcasts.
- 0:57So high stakes has its very own RSS feeds, you know, its own
- 1:00social channels, its own audience.
- 1:03It's completely separate to mini scroll.
- 1:05But we just publish everything under the network umbrella on
- 1:09the YouTube channel, which is why sometimes it seems a bit
- 1:11redundant. So I did want to just address
- 1:13that. We always reply to the comments
- 1:15about it, but I thought, let me just address it here for anyone
- 1:18that has ever felt that way or is confused.
- 1:21All right, before I get into it, please, Please remember to rate,
- 1:23review and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US,
- 1:26sign up to our newsletter, buy us a coffee.
- 1:29We have a Patreon if you guys want more like behind the scenes
- 1:32personal content. Sean and I just did our Patreon
- 1:34episode last night for you guys. Annabelle and I are doing one on
- 1:37Tuesday and all that good stuff. Let's just get into it.
- 1:41So the first story that I have for you guys today is book talk.
- 1:45Favorite author Freda McFadden has finally revealed her true
- 1:50identity. I did not know this, you guys.
- 1:53I cannot believe that I didn't know this.
- 1:56Because if there is one thing about me, it's that I am going
- 2:00to devour a Freda McFadden book, OK?
- 2:03I am obsessed with thrillers. I do not have like highbrow
- 2:08literary taste. I fucking love her books.
- 2:11I loved the handmade series. Handmade, handmade, handmade.
- 2:15Yes, handmade housemaid. I was like the handmaid.
- 2:18That does not sound right. That was made series I have
- 2:22read, I think like all of her books.
- 2:24OK. And I had no idea that she was
- 2:28using a pen name this entire time and that she has been going
- 2:33out in disguise, red carpets in disguise this entire time.
- 2:40I was so shocked. OK, so if you don't know who
- 2:42Freda McFadden is, she is the author of The Housemaid, which
- 2:45was just made into a huge blockbuster film with Sydney
- 2:48Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Her books are amongst the most
- 2:52popular on book talk. And I think she's become kind of
- 2:54like a Colleen Hoover, like one of those entry level authors
- 2:57that if you are trying to get back into reading, maybe like
- 3:01post high school, post uni or just as an adult in general.
- 3:04I think there's a lot of women in their 20s and early 30s,
- 3:08maybe not so many in their early 30s, but like me, but young
- 3:12women who are reading her books and falling in love with reading
- 3:15again through that. So now she has finally revealed
- 3:18her true identity. In an interview with USA TODAY
- 3:22published on April 8th, she revealed that her real name is
- 3:24Sarah Cohen and that by day she is a brain doctor.
- 3:28So we did know that she was a doctor.
- 3:30That was always part of it, that she was using a pen name that
- 3:33was public and that she is a doctor.
- 3:35But we did not know her real name.
- 3:37We knew, I don't know if we knew she was going out in disguise,
- 3:39but regardless, she was going out in disguise.
- 3:42Who's wearing a wig and wearing different glasses and she is a
- 3:45brain doctor. Girl.
- 3:47What? That's amazing.
- 3:49She has been writing under the pseudonym since her very first
- 3:51book, The Devil Wears Scrubs, back in 2013.
- 3:54So that is 13 years of disguise. To be fair, I don't think she's
- 3:58like going out very often as Frida McFadden.
- 4:02But obviously with the handmaid. Oh my God, handmaid, housemaid.
- 4:07Obviously with the housemaid, she was doing like red carpets
- 4:09and stuff. So to maintain this double life
- 4:11in public, like I said, she was wearing wigs and glasses.
- 4:14The glasses are apparently real. And she explained that she loved
- 4:17wearing the wigs because she had no idea how to style her own
- 4:20hair. That's relatable.
- 4:22And yes, her hospital colleagues apparently did find out.
- 4:26So they saw her as Freda McFadden on an Instagram post,
- 4:30like in disguise. And that is how they found out.
- 4:33As for now, why did she decide to reveal this?
- 4:36She told USA TODAY that she's tired of people debating whether
- 4:39she's even a real person or as she put it, whether there's,
- 4:42quote, three men that are writing her stories.
- 4:45She had left her full time medical practice in 2023.
- 4:48And with the house maid becoming this like massive film last
- 4:51year, she said that the secret was getting harder to hold on
- 4:53to. However, she will be keeping
- 4:55this pen name. She wants to be known as Frida
- 4:57McFadden professionally. All right, the next story that I
- 5:00have for you guys today, this is T Alex Earl has reposted a shady
- 5:05TikTok that was specifically about Alex Cooper.
- 5:10So I saw this literally 5 minutes after it happened after
- 5:14Alex had reposted it and I was like I need to screenshot my
- 5:17proof. I need to download this video in
- 5:19case she on reposts it in case this video gets taken down like
- 5:23I need these receipts so I can tell you I have seen it with my
- 5:26own eyes and I screenshotted it on my phone right after it
- 5:30happened. So TikTok creator, the bravo
- 5:32mom, she seems to be watching the unwell Winter Games on
- 5:35YouTube right now and she made this video today calling out
- 5:38Alex Cooper. She called her an ambulance
- 5:40chaser, A grim Reaper and said she was quote so awful.
- 5:44It was a very savage video. Let me play you it.
- 5:47I would honestly compare Alex Cooper to an ambulance chaser.
- 5:52Like, you just had the most horrific accident of your life.
- 5:57You're, you know, hanging on by a thread, don't know if you're
- 6:00going to make it. And she's the first one there.
- 6:03She's the first one there. And she's a grim Reaper.
- 6:06She wants to get the exclusive interview.
- 6:11She wants to be there when you're vulnerable and you're
- 6:14broken down and you're ready to sign over your rights to your
- 6:21life. Like, she's so awful.
- 6:24And I wish that more women, celebrities, female athletes,
- 6:29reality stars, anyone, anyone who's a woman on planet Earth, I
- 6:34wish they would stop making that their first stop after something
- 6:40happens in their lives. Because she is profiting off of
- 6:45womens''s like heartaches and failures and you know, all these
- 6:50awful things that happen to women, she's profiting off of
- 6:53it. So this is not like a casual
- 6:54video about Alex Cooper obviously.
- 6:57And I know Alex Earl has been shady here and there about Alex
- 7:00on TikTok, but I think that this is like the most blatant that
- 7:02it's ever been because this video was so savage.
- 7:05And yeah, I saw it with my own eyes.
- 7:07She reposted it. The comments are filled with
- 7:09people being like, Oh my God, Alex Earl reposted this.
- 7:12This is crazy. I need to know what happened
- 7:14between them more than ever now. And I have seen since Alex's
- 7:18skin care line came out and we know how long she's like worked
- 7:21on it for allegedly she has said I think it was like 2 years or
- 7:23whatever. Everybody always says that.
- 7:25I have seen speculation that maybe they're falling out had
- 7:28less to do with the fact that Alex Cooper was trying to make
- 7:30Alex Earl maybe like the next raunchy party girl.
- 7:34You know, Alex Earl has always been really open about her
- 7:36partying and having fun, but she is still relatively like brand
- 7:40safe. Whereas if you think about Alex
- 7:41Cooper, she's a lot more brand safe now.
- 7:44But initially she was not. And the way that they were
- 7:46positioning Alex Earl helping launch the Unwell Network as
- 7:50like one of the first talent was that Alex Cooper would kind of
- 7:53be like passing the baton on to Alex Earl.
- 7:56And in their first few episodes together, it really seems like
- 7:59Alex Cooper was trying to get Alex Earl.
- 8:01Oh my God, this is like going to confuse me so much to open up a
- 8:04lot more about like not brand safe topics like sex life and
- 8:07stuff like that, which obviously for call her daddy.
- 8:10And Alex Cooper's brand was normal.
- 8:13And she was trying to, I assume, move away from that as much as
- 8:16she can as she gets older and she's married now and stuff and
- 8:19trying to kind of like pass that buck on to Alex Earl.
- 8:21But Alex Earl was really not having it.
- 8:23And so there was a lot of speculation around the fact that
- 8:26maybe Alex felt a bit pressured to like, be something different
- 8:30by Alex Cooper and like the Unwell brand in general.
- 8:32They wanted her to like, play this role that she wasn't
- 8:34willing to play. However, now with the skin care
- 8:37line, I've seen other speculation that could be true
- 8:40as well, which is that maybe Alex Cooper or Unwell in general
- 8:44wanted a cut of Alex Cooper's skin care line.
- 8:46Like maybe there was some type of clause in the contract.
- 8:49We know that Bravo does that allegedly that if somebody who's
- 8:52on their network launches a company, they apparently get a
- 8:55cut of it because they're getting like all this promo and
- 8:57all this kind of stuff. So it's possible maybe that when
- 9:02Alex Earl started working on the skin care line, Alex Cooper
- 9:05slash like unwell in general was trying to get a cut of it.
- 9:08I don't know, that's just speculation, but something very
- 9:11serious went down here. I think it's very obvious now
- 9:14that Alex Earl harbors a lot of resentment for Alex Cooper and
- 9:18so do some of the other people that have left the network.
- 9:21We've covered it before, but it wasn't the Daily Dish.
- 9:23Is that what they were called? It like a pop culture podcast
- 9:26And one of the host Hannah, she made like kind of a shady post
- 9:29about Alex Unwell in general, saying this will make like a
- 9:31great chapter in my memoir. So people don't have great
- 9:35things to say. It seems about Unwell, but I
- 9:39don't know if you guys feel like this, but I feel like lately
- 9:42with the Alex Earl falling out, the Sofia memoir, the Hannah
- 9:46Montana anniversary, I would say like flop like it did not get it
- 9:50was not well received. And now on well Games, the
- 9:54sentiment towards her has become more and more negative.
- 9:57I was watching a YouTube video about Alex Cooper for some
- 10:00research into this story and it was by Kayla says and she said
- 10:04that she feels like maybe Alex is overexposed right now, which
- 10:08obviously would be a bit detrimental to her image.
- 10:11I do agree with that and I'm sure I have sat up here many
- 10:13times and called a woman overexposed.
- 10:15I understand that the idea of someone being overexposed and
- 10:18feeling like, OK, they need to take a step back.
- 10:20It's like it's an internal biasing.
- 10:22It's like the audience is starting to feel a bit fatigued
- 10:24with you. But I was thinking like, do we
- 10:26ever say that like a man is overexposed?
- 10:28I don't love the comparisons here because it is absolutely
- 10:31not like apples to apples, but I was thinking like the whole
- 10:36overexposed thing. Is that just something that we
- 10:38say about like, women in the public eye who are like really
- 10:40slaying their careers? Because regardless of the
- 10:42sentiment around Alex Cooper, like she is slaying right now,
- 10:45she's getting like every fucking opportunity.
- 10:47And I can tell you if I was Alex Cooper, I'd be saying yes to all
- 10:50those opportunities too. So I don't know.
- 10:52It's an interesting one. But I would say in general, like
- 10:55the sentiment online is that people are getting really over
- 10:58Alex Cooper. They want somebody fresh to come
- 11:00in. They want somebody new to be
- 11:02like the first stop on every celebrity press tour.
- 11:05Like, can we have somebody else? There's like a lot of hunger for
- 11:08something different right now. OK, the next story that I have
- 11:10for you guys today, this is a quick one, but it seems like
- 11:13Mana will not be joining Cats Eye for their Coachella
- 11:17performance. So back when we reported that
- 11:19Mana from Cats Eye was taking a hiatus from the group, the
- 11:22running rumor in the fandom was that she would make her come
- 11:25back to the group during Coachella during their Coachella
- 11:29performance. However, yesterday, her record
- 11:32label Hyvee, issued a statement to the Korea Herald confirming
- 11:35that she will not be performing at Coachella with Katzai on
- 11:38either weekend. They said Mana remains on
- 11:41hiatus. Oh, yeah.
- 11:42Annabelle also wanted me to let you guys know that she's really
- 11:45championing to get to Coachella weekend too.
- 11:47Now, since weekend one has basically started.
- 11:50OK. And the last story that I have
- 11:52for you guys today is the Lebrandt family reportedly is
- 11:55listing their home in Tennessee as a new state legislation comes
- 12:00into effect around family vlogging.
- 12:02So as we know, over the past few years it seemed that family
- 12:05vloggers fleeing LA for Nashville intro.
- 12:09This included the Lebrand's, Brittany Xavier, Cicely Bachman,
- 12:12Shannon Rose, just to name a few.
- 12:15At the time, the rumor was that they were leaving the state of
- 12:18California after labor laws were introduced to protect child
- 12:21influencers. California recently passed laws
- 12:24meant to expand protections to minors who work online by
- 12:27requiring a portion of certain earnings to be set aside for
- 12:30them, which is similar to child actors and the Coogan law.
- 12:34So the speculation over why there seems to be this mass
- 12:37exodus, I think it made sense to a lot of people, including me.
- 12:41But early last year, the Rolling Stone did do an investigation
- 12:43into this rumor specifically and found that actually many of the
- 12:47family vloggers who left California for Tennessee did so
- 12:50before the laws were passed. Obviously, that doesn't mean
- 12:53that they didn't see it coming or that that wouldn't have
- 12:55played a role in this. But I guess the Rolling Stone
- 12:57was trying to figure out like, is this actually the reaction to
- 13:00the laws? And it seems like it was more
- 13:03complicated than that. However, it's possible now that
- 13:06these critics may be vindicated because it seems like the
- 13:08Lebrandt's are teasing putting their house up for sale in
- 13:10Tennessee just as this new bill has been passed around child
- 13:14influencing in Tennessee. So on March 19th, a bill was
- 13:17passed in Tennessee that will enforce child labor laws for
- 13:20social media influencers. And it is set to be signed this
- 13:23month. So basically, the bill does not
- 13:24allow children under 14 to appear in online videos that
- 13:28make money. However, while that does sound
- 13:30great, obviously most videos make money on social media.
- 13:33If you think about like Adsense on YouTube sponsorships, the
- 13:37TikTok creator fund is really rare in the US to have social
- 13:41media content by an influencer that doesn't like rack up some
- 13:44amount of dollars, right for views.
- 13:46But there are a few caveats here.
- 13:48So this law does not apply to the production and filming time
- 13:51of monetized content, just like the footage itself.
- 13:54So like all of the prep time, all of the actual time that
- 13:58they're sitting there, like filming, like all of that
- 14:00apparently does not apply to that.
- 14:02Just like the actual footage itself.
- 14:03This law only applies if a child appears in at least 30% of a
- 14:07creator's monetized content over a 30 day period and the account
- 14:12hits certain earnings thresholds as well.
- 14:14So it has to hit $15,000 a year, or $0.10 per view.
- 14:18If those requirements are met, the parent slash creator must
- 14:21set up a trust fund for the child.
- 14:23Now, some people are pointing out that because the law uses
- 14:26the word and parents could easily avoid it by making sure
- 14:30no single child appears in more than 30% of the content,
- 14:33especially if they have multiple children like the Lebrands.
- 14:37And they could also easily spread the kids across different
- 14:39platforms or accounts. So no single account triggers
- 14:42this threshold. So it's definitely not a perfect
- 14:46bill, but it is a start, right? It's a start to some legislation
- 14:49around this. Now TikTok is lit up with people
- 14:52speculating that This is why the Labrands are putting their house
- 14:55up for sale. I think that's a possibility for
- 14:58sure. However, this house has actually
- 15:00been up for sale before. So they put it up for sale in
- 15:022024 and then they took it down and now the real estate company
- 15:06that's going to sell it again, I guess is like teasing it, saying
- 15:09it's coming soon. But regardless, if the Labrands
- 15:12themselves actually end up moving, it will be interesting
- 15:14to see if these family vloggers who just like happened to move
- 15:18from California to Tennessee right before these laws came
- 15:21into place if they stay or if they leave.
- 15:24Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 15:27Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 15:29Please remember to rate, review and subscribe Spotify star rate
- 15:32US and I will talk to you on Monday.
