Jenn: Hey everybody welcome back to travel tips Tuesday,
• 0:03
  Meggan: hey everyone,
• 0:06
Jenn: we are all getting back out there and some of us are getting up there for the first time flying.
• 0:13
Jenn: So I want to talk about.
• 0:15
  Jenn: Airport security.
• 0:17
Jenn: Cause that's a super fun topic.
• 0:21
Meggan: It's fun, but it's also, I mean, pertinent.
• 0:23
  Meggan: So we must,
• 0:24
Jenn: it is like security measures have definitely changed over the years, right?
• 0:29
Jenn: Like we've both been traveling for quite a while now.
• 0:31
Jenn: And actually my first flight ever was just a couple of months after nine 11.
• 0:35
Jenn: So it looked completely different than right.
• 0:38
Jenn: They looked through your entire luggage even your checked luggage, they unzippered it and looked through it.
• 0:44
Jenn: And when we were going through pre-board security, they looked through everything.
• 0:48
Jenn: They made me turn on my Walkman to make sure it was a working electronic.
• 0:53
  Meggan: Oh my goodness.
• 0:54
Jenn: I know, thankfully, we don't have to do that.
• 0:57
Meggan: And I actually remember flying once out of lax and the person I was with actually was able to walk me to my gate.
• 1:06
  Jenn: Wow.
• 1:08
Meggan: That's how old I am and it was beautiful.
• 1:10
Meggan: It was like, those were the, you missed "the days"
• 1:13
Jenn: I miss the days, I guess.
• 1:18
Meggan: So things have changed since 2001, but things have really in that bad way changed since earlier, that's fair.
• 1:26
  Jenn: It's a time-consuming process, right?
• 1:28
Jenn: Like the security, the lines can be really, really long and you don't want to be on one of our travel fail episodes.
• 1:36
Jenn: Talking about how you got to the airport and missed your flight because you didn't get through security in time.
• 1:41
Jenn: Which one of my friends has done because he's decided to eat a meal in the restaurant at the airport before security and
• 1:49
Meggan: don't ever eat before security.
• 1:51
  Meggan: No,
• 1:52
  Jenn: no, no, no, no.
• 1:52
Meggan: The anxiety I feel just saying,
• 1:56
  Jenn: I don't know.
• 1:56
Jenn: It was a really bad idea.
• 2:00
Jenn: But in general, Meggan, like how early do you plan to get to the airport before you go through security?
• 2:06
Meggan: Well, the airport makes Peter die a slow death and he, he does not enjoy it, but I am sort of ardent about us being there two hours.
• 2:17
  Jenn: Yeah.
• 2:17
Jenn: I would say I'm in the two to three hours realm.
• 2:21
Jenn: I might be more closer to two and a half to three hours, depending on how anxious I am and how early in the morning.
• 2:29
Meggan: And it doesn't hurt to, to get there early one time we got there thankfully quite early and Peter had forgotten his passport at home.
• 2:36
  Jenn: Good thing.
• 2:37
Jenn: It's not that far away from the airport,
• 2:40
Meggan: but if we'd shown up half an hour early, Yeah, never been able to go.
• 2:44
Meggan: So there's many reasons to show up early.
• 2:47
  Jenn: There is many reasons.
• 2:48
Jenn: And so we think you should get to the airport and go right to the security line dilly dally.
• 2:56
Jenn: And when you do that, have your boarding pass and your ID.
• 3:00
Jenn: At the ready, you will need that immediately when you're getting into the security line.
• 3:05
Jenn: Next tip is to wear shoes that come on and off easily.
• 3:08
Jenn: And I don't recommend sandals because do you want to walk barefoot on airport carpet?
• 3:15
  Meggan: No,
• 3:16
  Jenn: I don't really no.
• 3:19
Jenn: I know um, less metal the better.
• 3:23
Jenn: I am usually a pretty like low jewelry person, but I do wear a Fitbit and.
• 3:30
Jenn: So the last time I traveled, he was like, you need to take that off.
• 3:33
  Jenn: I'm like, oh yeah.
• 3:34
Jenn: So that's another couple of like extra seconds.
• 3:37
Jenn: So just keep that stuff in mind.
• 3:39
  Jenn: If you're a big
• 3:40
Meggan: you can always that stuff in your backpack to see time.
• 3:43
Meggan: If you wanted to take it with you.
• 3:44
  Jenn: Definitely.
• 3:45
Jenn: Speaking of in your backpack, have your laptop.
• 3:48
Jenn: If you're traveling with one in an easy accessible place, cause you will need to take that out of your bag and put it in its own bin to go through security.
• 3:57
Jenn: Now, the last times that I've traveled to like an iPad or a tablet, they haven't made me take it out.
• 4:03
Jenn: It's only like a laptop.
• 4:05
  Jenn: Um, Yes.
• 4:07
  Jenn: And liquid.
• 4:08
Jenn: So the liquids that you bring your only allowed the little under a hundred milliliter size bottles and have them all together in one bag, ready to take out of your bag.
• 4:19
Jenn: Cause that will also need to come out of your bag
• 4:22
Meggan: the idea is just ease of the process.
• 4:24
Jenn: You're trying to make this process go as quickly and as painlessly as um, have your water bottle empty.
• 4:33
Jenn: Because if that's full of water, they will make you dump it out.
• 4:35
Jenn: It doesn't matter if you just filled it up, doesn't matter if you just bought it and it's still sealed, they do not care.
• 4:41
Meggan: No, they don't give them your liquids or else.
• 4:44
  Jenn: Yes.
• 4:45
Jenn: And be nice to that.
• 4:47
Jenn: Do not joke about bombs or anything.
• 4:50
Jenn: Security, you might think you're being funny, but you're not.
• 4:54
Meggan: And they won't be laughing when they, when they pull you aside for real,
• 4:58
  Jenn: that bad times.
• 4:59
Jenn: I'm not going to go over what you can and can't bring I'll put a link to the CATSA website for Canadians in the show notes that they have a really neat like search function, where you can search.
• 5:09
Jenn: And I'll tell you if you can take it in your checked bag.
• 5:11
Jenn: In your carry on baggage or one or the other or both so I've used that before and it's, it's actually really helpful.
• 5:17
Jenn: Have you ever had a problem going through security before?
• 5:21
  Jenn: No.
• 5:21
  Meggan: So like, no issues.
• 5:23
Meggan: I mean, I've been randomly selected, I suppose, for baggage search when I've gotten to countries that happened to me, maybe in like Bermuda and one other place for some reason, never happens to Peter.
• 5:34
Meggan: Only ever happens to me.
• 5:36
Meggan: Been selected as well to go through the machine that does the full body scan as compared to just walking through the, but I mean, no issues,
• 5:46
Jenn: no, I haven't had any issues.
• 5:47
Jenn: My husband used to work pre-board security at the airport when we were first dating.
• 5:52
Jenn: So he's like very neurotic about getting through the security line as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
• 5:59
Jenn: So I haven't really had any.
• 6:02
Jenn: Issues that I can think of.
• 6:04
Jenn: But yeah, similar to you, like going through the full body scanner, which is really not a big deal.
• 6:08
Jenn: I actually like the full body scanner because it's over and like it's very quickly over not bad at all.
• 6:16
  Jenn: So yeah.
• 6:18
  Jenn: Happy airport security travels,
• 6:23
Meggan: I think is another tip as well.
• 6:25
Meggan: Like, I mean, all the things we've mentioned really at this point in our lives, we should all know.
• 6:30
Meggan: And I know there are like first-time travelers out there.
• 6:33
Meggan: So if you aren't sure the website Jen's going to put in the show notes.
• 6:36
Meggan: I mean, and I think it makes a lot of sense and really just common sense.
• 6:40
Jenn: Like when I was traveling recently to thunder bay, I was taking my cross stitch stuff cause I wanted to work on a project and I was like, oh, can I take my little scissors?
• 6:51
Jenn: Cause it's like, they're sharp and pointy.
• 6:53
  Jenn: I don't know.
• 6:54
Jenn: And so I went on the CATSA website and yes I can, as long as they're under three inches in length.
• 6:59
Jenn: So those are the things that you learned on the website.
• 7:02
  Meggan: That's a good resource.
• 7:04
Jenn: It would be a good resource.
• 7:06

• 7:29
  Jenn: Thank you so much.
• 7:30
Jenn: And if you could share the show with the travel loving pal, that would also be amazing.

  Jenn: Bye everyone.
• 7:37
  Jenn: Bye guys.
