Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Integral Surrender to the Divine
Transcript
- 0:00We tend to live under the illusion that we are one being
- 0:04and that what we think or feel represents who we are.
- 0:08We accept the idea that we are dedicated to a spiritual path or
- 0:13we accept the sense of devotion that we feel as representing our
- 0:17surrender to the Divine will. Yet, we have different aspects
- 0:22of our being that may not actually carry out this
- 0:25dedication or surrender in their day-to-day activities.
- 0:29Rather, they may act from desire or some egoistic impulsion.
- 0:35We may fail to notice this variance from our deeper
- 0:38aspirations if we do not appreciate both the complexity
- 0:43and the differing motivations that occur in our physical,
- 0:48vital, emotional, and mental beings.
- 0:52Once we recognize this complexity, we can begin to
- 0:55attend to it using our core aspiration as a foundation and
- 1:00then reviewing the various thought processes, emotions,
- 1:05feelings, sensations and reactions to ensure they are
- 1:10adhering to this central aspiration and consecration.
- 1:14And to the extent they are not withholding our sanction of
- 1:18those activities and providing new and focused direction to
- 1:22these parts of the being to align them with the need to open
- 1:26to and act based on the Divine Will.
- 1:31Sri Aurobindo observes quote a complete surrender is not
- 1:36possible in so short a time. For a complete surrender means
- 1:41to cut the knot of the ego in each part of the being and offer
- 1:44it free and whole to the Divine. The mind, the vital, the
- 1:50physical consciousness, and even each part of these in all its
- 1:55movements have one after the other to surrender separately,
- 1:59to give up their own way and to accept the way of the Divine.
- 2:04But what 1 can do is to make from the beginning a central
- 2:08resolve and self dedication, and to implement it in whatever way
- 2:13one finds open at each step, taking advantage of each
- 2:17occasion that offers itself to make the self giving complete.
- 2:22A surrender in One Direction makes others easier, more
- 2:26inevitable, but it does not of itself cut or loosen the other.
- 2:31Knots, and especially those which are very intimately bound
- 2:36up with the present personality and its most cherished
- 2:40formations may often present great difficulties even after
- 2:45the central will has been fixed and the first seals are put on
- 2:49its resolve in practice. End Quote.
