Latest / The Craig Way Show / How far is Texas away from the "Standard"?
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 0:15Speaker 2: All right, thanks again the Jeene Watson, our MLB insider,
- 0:18Speaker 2: joining us here to talk about Game three of the
- 0:20Speaker 2: World Series tonight between the Yankees and the Dodgers at
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yankee Stadium in New York. Let's go back to hearing
- 0:26Speaker 2: some more from longgrn's head coach Steve Sarkasian. We're talking
- 0:29Speaker 2: about going into the bye week, and so when that happens,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and I remember this happening wing in the first by
- 0:36Speaker 2: week after the Mississippi State game, the or coming yeah
- 0:43Speaker 2: into the Mississippi State game, I guess the conversation of
- 0:51Speaker 2: what was going to happen throughout the course of the
- 0:56Speaker 2: rest of the college football season and meaning one loss
- 1:01Speaker 2: teams getting into the playoff, maybe even two lost teams
- 1:04Speaker 2: getting into the playoff. And sark was asked for his
- 1:07Speaker 2: his breakdown on that, but also to start off by
- 1:12Speaker 2: talking about what he and his players describe as a standard.
- 1:16Speaker 2: We've talked about this during the course of the season.
- 1:18Speaker 2: When they say the standard is the standard, So.
- 1:20Speaker 3: How far are they from their standard?
- 1:23Speaker 2: And as a sidebar, does he think a two loss
- 1:26Speaker 2: team can get in? Is that?
- 1:32Speaker 4: You know, I'm I'm always like that the glass half
- 1:36Speaker 4: full guy. But yet I can always see the half
- 1:40Speaker 4: empty part, you know, And I think that's probably a
- 1:44Speaker 4: healthy balance to have that I'm not just looking at
- 1:46Speaker 4: things through a straw.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You know, we're so close, Like this.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Past game, if you would have said the game would
- 1:55Speaker 4: have finished, you know, forty five to ten, it wouldn't
- 1:59Speaker 4: have surprised me if you just watched the film and
- 2:01Speaker 4: watch some of the execution that was happening. But yet
- 2:04Speaker 4: we have things that are happening in game that are
- 2:07Speaker 4: causing the game to remain a little closer than we
- 2:10Speaker 4: would have liked.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Whether it's holding.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Penalties, whether it's tipball interceptions, whether it's a couple penalties
- 2:16Speaker 4: on defense that swing the score. And so I'm always
- 2:19Speaker 4: striving for what does perfection look like? And then I
- 2:23Speaker 4: go in this morning with the team and I walk
- 2:25Speaker 4: them through of, hey, this is the difference in forty
- 2:28Speaker 4: two or forty five to ten as compared to twenty
- 2:31Speaker 4: seven to twenty four, right, And we just talked about
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, I showed a twenty one play cut up
- 2:36Speaker 4: to them this morning, But in reality, that was about
- 2:38Speaker 4: six or seven plays that swung that game in that direction.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And so that's what we strive for at some point.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I don't know if we're ever gonna have to play
- 2:49Speaker 4: a perfect game, but we're gonna have to play cop
- 2:51Speaker 4: closer to perfect to go achieve the things that we
- 2:54Speaker 4: want to achieve. And there's nothing wrong with that as
- 2:56Speaker 4: a competitor, right, We're not a finished product. I think
- 2:59Speaker 4: our best football is ahead of us, and we're looking
- 3:01Speaker 4: forward to that. As far as a one loss, two loss,
- 3:05Speaker 4: three loss team, no, I don't, I don't know. You know,
- 3:08Speaker 4: it's we're only at the halfway point. This is crazy
- 3:11Speaker 4: to think of where college football is at, what our
- 3:15Speaker 4: conference is about.
- 3:16Speaker 3: And you watch all the games, and you know, I
- 3:19Speaker 3: get it.
- 3:20Speaker 4: We beat a top twenty five team by three on
- 3:22Speaker 4: the road, you know, But that same team, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 4: beat a top twenty five team at home and in
- 3:29Speaker 4: his one other games. I've seen other teams lose games before.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I had to remind our players is you know, Georgia
- 3:34Speaker 4: came into our game with a loss already, right, And
- 3:37Speaker 4: so things happen. It's hard to go undefeated and this
- 3:40Speaker 4: conference is hard to go undefeated in college football. The
- 3:43Speaker 4: point being is can you just continue to grow and
- 3:46Speaker 4: get better and then the chips.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Fall where they may?
- 3:48Speaker 4: You know, so, I don't know how many losses it's
- 3:50Speaker 4: gonna take to get in or not get in.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Our first mission.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Our first goal is to try to win an SEC championship,
- 3:55Speaker 4: and then we'll recalibrate after that kind of for the
- 3:58Speaker 4: second season.
- 3:58Speaker 3: If we're able to get in now.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Next he was asked about I guess the best way
- 4:03Speaker 2: to describe it is downfield passing, about so many of
- 4:09Speaker 2: the passes being short and in the screen.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Git, wasn't this your buddy?
- 4:12Speaker 2: C J.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Vogel asked this question? He did.
- 4:14Speaker 2: He was asking about that about how do you deal
- 4:17Speaker 2: with that when there's so many of the passes have
- 4:20Speaker 2: been in the short game and sark had already response is.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Tell him to move up, then we'll throw it over.
- 4:29Speaker 4: They played man to man on one snap that wasn't
- 4:32Speaker 4: in the red area. We threw a touchdown pass over
- 4:34Speaker 4: their head.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Tell them to move up.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and and CJ t his credit. He posted that
- 4:42Speaker 2: the tweet, and I think he was just trying to do,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, his due diligence as a journalist, and he
- 4:47Speaker 2: went on and showed some other video and stuff that
- 4:49Speaker 2: wasn't really on Sork of the passing game downfield with
- 4:51Speaker 2: the way coverages were there. He was there was nothing
- 4:53Speaker 2: wrong with it, he said, And you heard the chuckling there.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So it's kind of done half jogging telling them move
- 4:58Speaker 2: up because everybody's playing back.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But when you read something.
- 5:03Speaker 2: On social media, it could come across looking or sounding
- 5:08Speaker 2: or harsh or insensitive or whatever. And there were some
- 5:13Speaker 2: people that were wanted to take stark to task for that.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So how you just being snarky, Bob? Now you heard
- 5:17Speaker 2: the joking. He was just kind of saying it tongue
- 5:19Speaker 2: in cheek, tell him to move up? What else? What
- 5:22Speaker 2: else you're gonna do? You're gonna throw downfield into coverage
- 5:24Speaker 2: like that? And he talked about it. I don't know
- 5:27Speaker 2: if we put the cut yet. Ever, it's coming up
- 5:28Speaker 2: about how defenses are playing, like where we throw it
- 5:32Speaker 2: deep all the time and we don't. So you know,
- 5:35Speaker 2: you call plays on how the defense is set up, right,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I mean? And CJ I would have let him to
- 5:41Speaker 2: that asking that question. Was this morning he tweeted out
- 5:44Speaker 2: that I think eighteen of yours thirty seven pass attempts
- 5:47Speaker 2: traveled with five ear yards or less down the field.
- 5:49Speaker 3: That's correct, and that's by design.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Right now. I'm sure there's some routes where Texas has
- 5:54Speaker 1: a receiver who's running a fader going deep in the field.
- 5:56Speaker 1: But when you have a two high look or a
- 5:59Speaker 1: three high look, you throw the underneath route because the
- 6:02Speaker 1: likelihood is running back receivers wide open and there's a
- 6:04Speaker 1: chance they're going to give it a big chunk of
- 6:06Speaker 1: yardist you know. That's and Start pointed out the one
- 6:08Speaker 1: touchdown where Vanderbilt played man covers led to a Geandre
- 6:11Speaker 1: More touchdown.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Right listen.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Certainly, nothing wrong with CJ asking that question. Very fair
- 6:17Speaker 2: question ask and I thought Sark cancered it pretty plain
- 6:20Speaker 2: and simply like that. It's just sometimes you can get
- 6:22Speaker 2: misconstrued when folks look at it on social media. There
- 6:25Speaker 2: was nothing wrong with the way the question was asked.
- 6:27Speaker 2: There was nothing wrong with the way the question was
- 6:29Speaker 2: answered as well. It kind of is what it is,
- 6:32Speaker 2: but folks sometimes through their own frame of reference, will
- 6:34Speaker 2: see it, read it and think about it differently, especially
- 6:37Speaker 2: if they didn't hear it live.
- 6:39Speaker 3: In the moment, all right.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So next up, I was talking about Jaylen Gilbo. He'd
- 6:44Speaker 2: been banged up, was he all right? And also the
- 6:46Speaker 2: work they have on trying to development the developmental process
- 6:51Speaker 2: of the young players.
- 6:52Speaker 4: No, Gilbo's totally fine. I'll go I'll work backwards. And
- 6:55Speaker 4: I think for all those other guys, you know, there's
- 6:58Speaker 4: this you know, they're all.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Kind of in a different stage.
- 7:02Speaker 4: And I don't want to talk on every guy in particular,
- 7:05Speaker 4: but I think at the end of the day, as competitors,
- 7:08Speaker 4: they all want to play more, and they all want
- 7:10Speaker 4: more opportunities to play. Sometimes it's difficult, and Jared Gibson's case,
- 7:16Speaker 4: you're when you're the third running back and how a game,
- 7:18Speaker 4: in the flow of a game goes sometimes that you
- 7:21Speaker 4: just don't get those carries that you would like. I
- 7:23Speaker 4: think we have a ton of trust in Jeric and
- 7:25Speaker 4: I think that he's a guy that will continue to
- 7:27Speaker 4: grow in our program. John Tay same thing. I think
- 7:31Speaker 4: getting him back rolling again is going to be good
- 7:33Speaker 4: for him and good for us.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So we're looking forward to that.
- 7:36Speaker 4: And ultimately the two defensive lineman, that's just about consistency.
- 7:40Speaker 4: You know, we're playing such good defensive football right now,
- 7:44Speaker 4: and guys are so doing their jobs at a high level,
- 7:47Speaker 4: and we're seeing the growth in these players that are
- 7:49Speaker 4: at the second half of their careers. The younger players,
- 7:52Speaker 4: the sooner they can understand that consistency factor, the easier
- 7:56Speaker 4: it is to get them out there and account on to.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Do those things.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And if you recall all early on in my time here,
- 8:01Speaker 4: I was saying the same things about an Alfred Collins,
- 8:04Speaker 4: you know about Hey, what's going to be the difference
- 8:06Speaker 4: for him? It's consistency And a lot of times that's
- 8:09Speaker 4: fundamentals and techniques, that's assignment, that's that's effort, that's conditioning,
- 8:14Speaker 4: it's all those things. And so you know, Dre and
- 8:17Speaker 4: Seder are very talented players, but finding that level of
- 8:20Speaker 4: consistency day in and day out is going to be
- 8:23Speaker 4: the deciding factor in you know, trusting them in a
- 8:25Speaker 4: critical moment in a ballgame, you know, especially in the
- 8:28Speaker 4: Southeastern Conference.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that was going into Chip Brown's question about Jerre
- 8:31Speaker 2: Bledsoe and Sadir Mitchell and their development as well as
- 8:36Speaker 2: say a John Tay Cook on the offensive side. Now,
- 8:38Speaker 2: he was also asked about what he's seeing that's impressing
- 8:41Speaker 2: him about trading Moore and Colin Simmons.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I feel like Trey actually had a
- 8:46Speaker 4: heck of a game this weekend. You know, we're we're
- 8:50Speaker 4: asking a lot of variety out of him. You know,
- 8:52Speaker 4: he's playing some outside landbacker, he's playing some defensive end.
- 8:55Speaker 4: We're moving them around in kind of our flex front,
- 8:58Speaker 4: you know, over guards and asking things. He's playing the
- 9:00Speaker 4: run really well. I did thought he pressured the quarterback
- 9:04Speaker 4: in this game, had a couple opportunities to affect the
- 9:07Speaker 4: quarterback and move him off the spot. So have been
- 9:09Speaker 4: impressed with him. Colin has had a good year so far. Again,
- 9:14Speaker 4: this game was unique because this was not a drop
- 9:17Speaker 4: back game, you know when I mean it was third
- 9:19Speaker 4: and eight and they gotten thirty personnel and cone formation
- 9:22Speaker 4: ran a bootleg wheel route, you know, which is like
- 9:25Speaker 4: uncommon stuff. You know, it was a lot of sprintouts.
- 9:27Speaker 4: There was a lot of things that were a little
- 9:29Speaker 4: bit different. And clearly we've got a pretty good pass
- 9:31Speaker 4: rush and they didn't want to just drop back and
- 9:33Speaker 4: let us rush. But that's the challenge for a younger
- 9:37Speaker 4: players to not get frustrated with that and then when
- 9:39Speaker 4: your opportunity comes is to try to make your plays
- 9:42Speaker 4: when they present themselves. So looking forward to those guys
- 9:44Speaker 4: the second half of the season, that they're going to
- 9:46Speaker 4: be very impactful players for us.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And one final thing from sarcast about could he fall
- 9:52Speaker 2: back on lean on his knowledge of working in the
- 9:54Speaker 2: National Football League to help the team go through a
- 9:57Speaker 2: sixteen game seasons of Prince Brian Davis has this question
- 10:00Speaker 2: because you mentioned earlier they're really kind of at the
- 10:03Speaker 2: numeracle halfway point if they were to go all the
- 10:05Speaker 2: way through and into the playoff and up to the
- 10:07Speaker 2: National Championship since they played eight games, and how he
- 10:10Speaker 2: helps his guys be mentally tough.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Well, I do think, you know, it was beneficial to
- 10:15Speaker 4: have played, you know, sixteen game season plus four preseason
- 10:20Speaker 4: games plus the playoffs.
- 10:21Speaker 3: There's there's layers to that.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And you know the other thing this offseason, I just
- 10:25Speaker 4: tried to tap into the guys that do it the best,
- 10:27Speaker 4: you know. I tapped into Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, Sean McVay,
- 10:31Speaker 4: guys who you know, year in and year out are
- 10:33Speaker 4: accustomed to being in the playoffs and then kind of
- 10:35Speaker 4: what that looks like in the length of a season
- 10:37Speaker 4: and how you get your teams ready and what do
- 10:40Speaker 4: your bye weeks look like in the NFL if you
- 10:42Speaker 4: have an in season by or if you get a
- 10:44Speaker 4: first round by in the playoffs, and how they attack that.
- 10:47Speaker 4: But I said this all along. You know, especially in
- 10:52Speaker 4: the Southeastern Conference, you know there's a it's taxing physically,
- 10:56Speaker 4: you know, the physical nature of play is tack but
- 11:00Speaker 4: I also think it is mentally taxing. And the idea
- 11:04Speaker 4: that you have to you know, maintain that level of
- 11:08Speaker 4: mental intensity and focus in your preparation week in week out.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I think it's critical.
- 11:14Speaker 4: You know, I don't think anybody thought when our schedule
- 11:17Speaker 4: came out that when we went to Vanderbilt that would
- 11:20Speaker 4: be a top twenty five matchup right against a five
- 11:24Speaker 4: and two football team. And and so you just don't
- 11:27Speaker 4: know in this conference of when teams kind of get
- 11:30Speaker 4: hot and when they start playing better, start playing differently,
- 11:33Speaker 4: and you think, oh, they're gonna get that game, and
- 11:35Speaker 4: then to buy well, when we found out they're a
- 11:37Speaker 4: pretty good football team, you know, they lost I think
- 11:41Speaker 4: three games by combined ten points now or something, maybe
- 11:43Speaker 4: less than that. And so the point is every week
- 11:46Speaker 4: in our conference you have to yes, be physically prepared
- 11:49Speaker 4: to play, but also mentally prepared to play.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And that's probably the biggest challenge.
- 11:54Speaker 4: And so, like I talked about to the guys this week,
- 11:56Speaker 4: we got to get reconnected even off the field. You know,
- 11:59Speaker 4: we're doing things outside of football with one another as
- 12:02Speaker 4: much as it is doing things on the field together.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And I think that's part of our secret sauce a
- 12:07Speaker 4: little bit. But it's also a chance to kind of
- 12:10Speaker 4: let our hair down and relax a little bit with
- 12:12Speaker 4: one another and enjoy each other's company, because that's.
- 12:14Speaker 3: What it's gonna take.
- 12:15Speaker 4: We're gonna we're gonna need everybody, you know, before this
- 12:17Speaker 4: season is done. And the best way to to feel
- 12:22Speaker 4: part of is to actually be part of. And we've
- 12:24Speaker 4: got to include everybody in this thing again, not just
- 12:27Speaker 4: in practice, but outside of the facility.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, important stuff there from Sorry, we've got to wrap
- 12:32Speaker 2: up today's edition of the program on Sports Radio AM
- 12:34Speaker 2: thirteen hundred and Zone
