- 0:00In his play Hamlet, William Shakespeare has the protagonist
- 0:04proclaim there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
- 0:08than are dreamt of in your philosophy, particularly in the
- 0:13West, anything that references the possibility of past lives,
- 0:17inherited memories or capacities or experiences is treated with
- 0:22disdain and disbelief. For the most part, the
- 0:26materialist mindset does not recognize the existence of the
- 0:30soul, the process of rebirth as a mechanism for the growth and
- 0:34development of the soul, or any mechanism that is not directly
- 0:39tied to material processes that can be scientifically evidenced.
- 0:44In recent times, the science of genetics has begun to recognize
- 0:48physical hereditary factors. And if we add into this element
- 0:54of nature the support and education of parents and the
- 0:58social setting, in other words, nurture, the materialists now
- 1:02can recognize many traits that seem to carry forward from one
- 1:07generation to the next. What is missing here, however,
- 1:12is an explanation for those cases that do not rely on
- 1:16physical heredity or the education, training and
- 1:20encouragement provided by the social framework of the family,
- 1:24the schools, the peers, and the social forces of the time.
- 1:30Such cases exist. The case of prodigies such as
- 1:35Mozart are frequently raised in such discussions.
- 1:39How can a 5 year old child write music or begin a Grand Tour of
- 1:43Europe performing before royalty at the age of 6 and write his
- 1:48first Symphony at the age of 8 if there is no predisposition
- 1:52brought in from a past lifetime? Materialists have their
- 1:57explanation of course that certain mental, vital and pre
- 2:02physical predispositions based in genetic inheritance provide a
- 2:08basis and the education of the child by the father who was
- 2:12himself a musician and composer make this possible.
- 2:19There are, however, intriguing cases that do not provide both
- 2:24the parental predisposition and the parental training that
- 2:29Mozart received. For example, the French composer
- 2:34Camis St. Cien apparently had a musical
- 2:38aptitude to pick out tunes on the piano already at age 2 and
- 2:42began composing at age 3, with more sophisticated composition
- 2:47starting at age 5. Alma Deutscher is a more modern
- 2:52example of a prodigy who began piano at age 2, violin at age 3,
- 2:58and composed her first short opera at age 7 and full opera at
- 3:03age 10. She apparently claimed that the
- 3:06melody she composed came to her in her dreams.
- 3:12It is not only in the field of music, however, that we can see
- 3:15evidence of forces at work beyond those that the
- 3:18materialist explanation will succeed in covering.
- 3:22An individual by the name of Terence Dow was already teaching
- 3:26older children spelling and addition when he was just two
- 3:29years old. By age 8, he achieved a high
- 3:33score on the SAT math section, a test usually taken by
- 3:37individuals in their final year of high school.
- 3:43The question of past lifetimes becomes more intriguing when we
- 3:46study documented cases of young children who can describe
- 3:50details of a past lifetime in places they have never been and
- 3:55circumstances they could never have experienced, and sometimes
- 3:59with languages they have never been exposed to in their current
- 4:03young lifetime. A substantial and documented
- 4:06study was undertaken at the University of Virginia with a
- 4:10number of cases that included mechanisms to eliminate possible
- 4:14alternative explanations. One of the most well known
- 4:19examples of course is the reincarnation of Tibetan lamas
- 4:23such as the Dalai Lama and the method of identifying the reborn
- 4:28lama that acts as a filter to prevent mistakes.
- 4:34Many people will jump from the one extreme of non belief to the
- 4:38other extreme of absolute belief in predestination and
- 4:42predetermination. Yet Shrid Arrobindo and the
- 4:46mother have added another element to this discussion,
- 4:49which is the evolution of consciousness and the conscious
- 4:53choice of the awakened soul. The stars, if you will, may
- 4:58provide a predisposition but do not control entirely the destiny
- 5:03of the awakened soul. This provides a method for both
- 5:07a foundation and an evolutionary growth.
- 5:12In some cases we may even recognize, as the Tibetan Book
- 5:16of the Dead asserts, that the soul at the time of death can
- 5:20remain conscious and avoid falling into negative or useless
- 5:24births, and in some cases can choose a birth that will carry
- 5:29on the direction and aspiration of the soul into the next
- 5:33lifetime. Generally, the soul does not
- 5:37bring along all the baggage of the details of the past birth,
- 5:41but brings with it the essence of that prior lifetime and
- 5:45experience so that progress can be made without having to start
- 5:50all over again from the beginning in each new birth.
- 5:54While this may provide a foundation for progress, past
- 5:58habits or samskaras may carry over and create limitations and
- 6:02obstacles for the spiritual practitioner to recognize and
- 6:07overcome, Sri Orbindo observes. Quote.
- 6:12It is true that we bring most of ourselves, or rather most of our
- 6:17predispositions, tendencies of reaction to the universal nature
- 6:22from past lives. Heredity only effects strongly
- 6:26the external being. Besides, all the effects of
- 6:31heredity are not accepted even there, only those that are in
- 6:34consonance with what we are to be or not preventative of it at
- 6:39least. End Quote reference.
