Latest / Birdland Territory / Coby Mayo hits HUGE homer, Orioles finally beat the Yankees
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Well, no doubt that one felt good throughout Birdland. The
- 0:11Speaker 1: Orioles beat the Yankees three to two and a likely hero,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Kobe Mayo with a three run homer. You never can
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict baseball if that's another night that proves that, guys.
- 0:22Speaker 1: As the Orioles ended a nine game losing streak to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Yankees, they had only been four and thirteen in
- 0:27Speaker 1: this series since the start of twenty twenty five. They
- 0:30Speaker 1: needed to show they could beat them, and they did.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Now we're going to see the rest of this series.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I think it's really important, guys, And by the way,
- 0:39Speaker 1: welcome everybody into Birdland territory with Steve, Brad and Tim
- 0:42Speaker 1: important that they win this series. They eat out one
- 0:46Speaker 1: more somehow, two would be spectacular. One would be a
- 0:49Speaker 1: series victory. What are your guys' impressions of Monday Night's victory.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, it's winning that first game of the
- 0:56Speaker 2: series always seems to make it just a little bit
- 0:58Speaker 2: easier to try to win the series. And I just
- 1:01Speaker 2: got to win one of the next two and kind
- 1:03Speaker 2: of get some momentum moving forward.
- 1:04Speaker 3: But big win last night.
- 1:06Speaker 2: You know, they came and scored late in the game
- 1:08Speaker 2: and great homer by Kobe there last night.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You got to feel good for the guy.
- 1:12Speaker 2: You could tell how excited he was and just kind
- 1:14Speaker 2: of a cyber relaf after making that era last week
- 1:18Speaker 2: and kind of ending that game there in Miami. So
- 1:21Speaker 2: great all round win the bullpen, great shutdown game for
- 1:24Speaker 2: them also, and just a really really good win, and
- 1:26Speaker 2: hopefully you can carry some of the momentum into the
- 1:29Speaker 2: next couple of games.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Steve, it was funny you made the point in the
- 1:34Speaker 4: press box last night where it was probably right around
- 1:37Speaker 4: when Kobe Mayo hit that three run homer, where he said, man,
- 1:41Speaker 4: it feels like the Yankees they're really dominating this game,
- 1:44Speaker 4: but you're a bloop and a blast away from tying
- 1:46Speaker 4: it up and low and bold. It ended up being
- 1:48Speaker 4: a weaver Kobe Mayo hitting the three run shot. It
- 1:52Speaker 4: was more of a here we go again through the
- 1:55Speaker 4: first six innings where oh my god, another lefty. The
- 1:58Speaker 4: Orioles were zero to nine against left handed starters heading
- 2:01Speaker 4: into last night, and here's Ryan Weathers, who he was
- 2:04Speaker 4: under the weather.
- 2:06Speaker 5: That's why he had to miss a couple of days.
- 2:08Speaker 4: His last start was against the Orioles in the Bronx
- 2:11Speaker 4: and he was fantastic.
- 2:13Speaker 5: The first six innings, no hit.
- 2:16Speaker 4: He ended up walking Taylor Ward to start the game,
- 2:18Speaker 4: and then he retired twelve straight batters. But the Orioles
- 2:23Speaker 4: found a way, and hey, you know, after we were
- 2:26Speaker 4: doing the show on Sunday where it was pitching in defense,
- 2:30Speaker 4: it was kind of more of the same. You saw
- 2:32Speaker 4: some strong defensive plays. The bullpen was absolutely nails. Late
- 2:37Speaker 4: in that game, Brandon Young didn't have his a stuff,
- 2:41Speaker 4: but all in all, going five and a third, it
- 2:44Speaker 4: was a really solid outing for him.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that was much needed. The Oriols get Game one
- 2:49Speaker 1: of the series against the Yankees. Hey, we're glad so
- 2:52Speaker 1: many of you have found our show, and we hope
- 2:56Speaker 1: you keep subscribing. Our next goal as a thousand subscribers,

- 3:15Speaker 1: and heading to one thousand subscribers, So keep following and
- 3:19Speaker 1: keep subscribing to Birdland territory. So, guys, before Kobe Mayo
- 3:25Speaker 1: had his big night, he was batting just one fifty
- 3:28Speaker 1: eight one hundred and ten played appearances. In his previous
- 3:31Speaker 1: twelve games, he was three for thirty two with an
- 3:34Speaker 1: ops of one to eighty five. That's the ops one
- 3:37Speaker 1: eighty five. Since he hit three homers in a three
- 3:40Speaker 1: game span April twenty one through twenty four, he had
- 3:43Speaker 1: gone thirteen games without one. So yes, he was an
- 3:45Speaker 1: unlikely hero and he got a pitch that I'm sure
- 3:49Speaker 1: the pitcher would want back. But here's the thing. You
- 3:51Speaker 1: still got to hit it, and you got to hit
- 3:53Speaker 1: it over the wall, and Kobe did that. If if
- 3:55Speaker 1: every mistake pitch ended up over the wall, the major
- 3:58Speaker 1: league home run leader would have one hundred and fifty.
- 4:00Speaker 1: They don't. So Brad, you hope that can mean a
- 4:04Speaker 1: lot to Kobe is for one night, it certainly did.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, without a doubt. Like I mentioned before, his reaction
- 4:10Speaker 2: told me everything.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It was.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He was so pumped to hit that homer, and you
- 4:14Speaker 2: could tell it wasn't just for him, it was to
- 4:16Speaker 2: help the team. And I think that's the biggest thing
- 4:19Speaker 2: I got out of that whole thing, was he got
- 4:21Speaker 2: the pitch he was kind of looking for. It was
- 4:23Speaker 2: a hangar, but like you said, you have to hit it,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and he hit it and it was in a big spot.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Gave them the lead, and you could just tell when
- 4:30Speaker 2: he went in the dugout as he crossed home plate.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I thought he almost broke Buck Britain's hand at third
- 4:35Speaker 2: base as he went by, giving him a high five there.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So it was just really good to see.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And I kind of mentioned to you guys this morning,
- 4:41Speaker 2: it's like I've heard about Coils here and there, and
- 4:45Speaker 2: it's like, you think he's twenty seven to twenty eight.
- 4:47Speaker 2: He's still only twenty four years old and he got
- 4:49Speaker 2: called up when he was twenty two. It's just amazing
- 4:53Speaker 2: at the youth of this team still, with all the
- 4:55Speaker 2: guys that I had to go look at the roster
- 4:57Speaker 2: to see and it's like every main guy is twenty
- 4:59Speaker 2: four younger. At Lee's being twenty eight, he's like one
- 5:01Speaker 2: of the older guys on the roster. It's just it's
- 5:03Speaker 2: amazing to see that. You know that the pressure put
- 5:06Speaker 2: on these guys at such a young age. It had
- 5:08Speaker 2: to feel like a monkey got taken off his back
- 5:11Speaker 2: last night when he hit that home run.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I feel like we've talked a lot in recent episodes
- 5:16Speaker 4: guys that we love it, fans love it when players
- 5:21Speaker 4: take accountability, and we've heard Craig Albernas do that. We've
- 5:25Speaker 4: heard Pete Alonso, Gunner Henderson, Chris Bassett. Well, when Kobe
- 5:30Speaker 4: Mayo made that throwing error at the end of that
- 5:33Speaker 4: Marlin series that ended up leading to a walk off,
- 5:36Speaker 4: he didn't duck the media. You know, he stood there
- 5:38Speaker 4: and he explained what happened during that play, what he
- 5:42Speaker 4: wished transpired. And I really respected that, and I think
- 5:45Speaker 4: anyone can respect that. And I thought it was really
- 5:48Speaker 4: cool being at the yard last night, seeing that moment
- 5:52Speaker 4: and seeing him initially with Kevin and Benn on the
- 5:56Speaker 4: mass and broadcast and him saying, look, I haven't through
- 6:00Speaker 4: in enough of those big spots, but gosh, you could
- 6:04Speaker 4: just tell what it meant for him, and then being
- 6:06Speaker 4: in the clubhouse when he was talking to the reporters,
- 6:10Speaker 4: just him saying, I forget who asked him, but like,
- 6:12Speaker 4: who did you lean on?
- 6:13Speaker 5: You know, friend's family brought up his dog.
- 6:16Speaker 4: You know, he said, my dog, Ejac committed the error.
- 6:19Speaker 4: You know, my dog has no idea. I was zero
- 6:21Speaker 4: for four with four strikeouts, and you know, it was
- 6:24Speaker 4: just such a weight off his shoulders. It was really
- 6:27Speaker 4: really cool to see last night following that game.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It was And there's so much pressure on these young kids.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And Brad, you're right. I mean, Kobe was a high
- 6:36Speaker 1: school pick, so you can get there a little sooner
- 6:38Speaker 1: than a college junior. You're younger like he was, and
- 6:42Speaker 1: you don't have some of the experience the college rafted
- 6:45Speaker 1: guys may have over their careers. And so now in
- 6:50Speaker 1: this day and age of prospects, your top one hundred,
- 6:53Speaker 1: everybody knows your name, everybody knows your stats. Back when
- 6:56Speaker 1: I was a kid, we didn't know what some of
- 6:58Speaker 1: these guys look like till they got and we saw
- 7:00Speaker 1: them on TV. Very different now, so much pressure, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm always impressed with how the young guys handle all
- 7:07Speaker 1: that fame and fortune because everybody knows their name before
- 7:10Speaker 1: they play a game in the major leagues.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and to me too, what goes into that is,
- 7:15Speaker 2: like you mentioned, was the experience factor. A lot of times,
- 7:18Speaker 2: like when I was coming up, when you got the
- 7:19Speaker 2: Triple A, you're facing guys who were men. They were
- 7:21Speaker 2: grown men in their thirties, they have families, they're up
- 7:24Speaker 2: and down, they've traveled this long journey.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Now in Triple A.
- 7:28Speaker 2: When I was playing my last season, I was almost
- 7:29Speaker 2: ten years older than almost everybody in the bullpen I
- 7:32Speaker 2: was sitting with.
- 7:32Speaker 3: It's just changed a lot.
- 7:33Speaker 2: These guys have a lot thrown their way at such
- 7:35Speaker 2: a young age that when they don't have this in
- 7:37Speaker 2: sixty instant success, it's like they want to get rid
- 7:40Speaker 2: of them. And it's like, man, this guy's only twenty
- 7:42Speaker 2: four years old. Like I was mentioned to you, guys,
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was twenty five and I got called up for
- 7:46Speaker 2: the first time. I know I was a college junior
- 7:47Speaker 2: late round pick, but I had basically three full seasons
- 7:50Speaker 2: in the minor leagues as a twenty two year old
- 7:52Speaker 2: when I got drafted. So the fact that these guys
- 7:54Speaker 2: come up at twenty two and they're just thrown into
- 7:56Speaker 2: the spotlight, expected to contribute right away, it's just it's amazing.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And this day and is with the social media and
- 8:03Speaker 2: like you said, the top one hundred prospects, everybody just
- 8:05Speaker 2: knows everything about you. So when you get up you
- 8:07Speaker 2: don't have this instant success, it's like, what's going on
- 8:10Speaker 2: this guy's supposed to be this big time home run hitter,
- 8:12Speaker 2: he's supposed to hit three hundred, he's supposed to all
- 8:14Speaker 2: this stuff, and it's like, man, just give him a
- 8:16Speaker 2: little bit of time.
- 8:17Speaker 3: He just needs to get comfortable.
- 8:19Speaker 4: It really is an interesting discussion, and I think we
- 8:21Speaker 4: could do multiple episodes on this and then Steve you
- 8:25Speaker 4: know more than anyone, just knowing that the Oriole's minor
- 8:27Speaker 4: league system inside and out, and I'm sure just from
- 8:30Speaker 4: your time beginning to cover that just to where it's
- 8:33Speaker 4: at right now fans, and I feel like this really
- 8:37Speaker 4: ramped up quite frankly when the twenty eighteen team ended
- 8:40Speaker 4: up getting blown up at the All Star deadline and
- 8:43Speaker 4: then Michael Lias coming in and you're going through that rebuild.
- 8:47Speaker 4: You know that there's going to be tough times, and
- 8:50Speaker 4: it certainly was for multiple years of losing over one
- 8:53Speaker 4: hundred games in Baltimore. But what got fans to buy
- 8:58Speaker 4: in were these prospecs, were these high draft picks, and
- 9:01Speaker 4: I think, especially in Baltimore, that's what you would look towards.
- 9:06Speaker 4: You you're looking towards the future instead of the present.
- 9:09Speaker 4: And obviously that has since changed since the Orioles have
- 9:12Speaker 4: gotten competitive, but you know, you knew all the guys
- 9:16Speaker 4: coming up and the Orioles, gosh, they had countless guys
- 9:18Speaker 4: on Top one.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Hundred prospects list. And now MLB TV, all these games.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Are televised in del Marva and Frederick in Norfolk, and
- 9:28Speaker 4: the exposure and I think it's really really cool, But
- 9:31Speaker 4: it is kind of that double edged sword where I
- 9:34Speaker 4: think there's that added pressure on these guys where not
- 9:37Speaker 4: every prospect pans out, not every top one hundred guy
- 9:40Speaker 4: ends up having a career, and then on the flip side,
- 9:44Speaker 4: you have the undrafted guy, you have the guy that
- 9:46Speaker 4: comes out of nowhere that is a multiple time All Star.
- 9:50Speaker 5: It's just kind of a crapshoot.
- 9:53Speaker 1: It's uh ten years ago, I was the only one
- 9:56Speaker 1: going to places like Frederick and Bowie, and now every
- 9:59Speaker 1: outlet has stories. I've run into people from other outlets
- 10:03Speaker 1: when they go to minor league games. Everybody's got a podcast,
- 10:07Speaker 1: everybody's in a Top thirty. It's exploded. So I'm happy
- 10:11Speaker 1: for the minor league kids who have coverage now. At
- 10:13Speaker 1: the same time, the double edged sword is the more
- 10:16Speaker 1: coverage means the more expectation when you get there, fans
- 10:20Speaker 1: want you to do it today immediately two weeks in,
- 10:23Speaker 1: he's a bust. What happened to this kid? And sometimes
- 10:26Speaker 1: it takes a lot longer than that. So we all
- 10:29Speaker 1: feel good for Kobe Mayo, and I know orio fans,
- 10:31Speaker 1: even the ones that criticized him do, because he's been
- 10:34Speaker 1: through a lot and he had a big night. So
- 10:37Speaker 1: congrats to Kobe Mayo in a big swing, maybe the
- 10:40Speaker 1: biggest of his early major league career. Birdland Territory rolls on.
- 10:45Speaker 1: More topics come in your way.

- 11:44Speaker 7: geek is the number one rated ticketing app.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Thank you, seat Geek.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So after twenty five straight games of allowing three runs,
- 11:52Speaker 1: you're more the last two wins for the Orioles, they've
- 11:55Speaker 1: allowed three runs total or nine hits with nineteen strike ASTs.
- 11:59Speaker 1: That's more like it. For the pitching staff, the bullpen
- 12:02Speaker 1: is quietly put together six straight games of wonner and
- 12:05Speaker 1: runner less one thirty five rah. By the way, in
- 12:08Speaker 1: that stretch, Brandon Young guys did not pitch to this
- 12:12Speaker 1: level last year. He was mediocre. He would probably be
- 12:16Speaker 1: the first to say that I wonder what you guys
- 12:19Speaker 1: think has changed what he's doing different or better? But
- 12:21Speaker 1: I mean he held the Yankees in check last night
- 12:26Speaker 1: after early home run, and I mean that was pretty stellar.
- 12:29Speaker 7: Outing.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it was, And like you said, giving up those
- 12:32Speaker 2: runs early again, it kind of seems to be a
- 12:34Speaker 2: little bit of a theme. But at least he didn't
- 12:36Speaker 2: give it up until the second or third inning last night.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And I think he's just doing a good job attacking
- 12:40Speaker 2: with his fastball. I think he's starting to realize that
- 12:42Speaker 2: it really plays at the level, the big league level,
- 12:45Speaker 2: and I think that's really all it takes. It's just
- 12:47Speaker 2: a little bit of confidence. When you're down at Triple A,
- 12:49Speaker 2: you can get away with a lot of stuff and
- 12:50Speaker 2: then you get called up, and especially a guy that's
- 12:52Speaker 2: going back and forth, you feel like you have to
- 12:54Speaker 2: be perfect all the time. But I think giving him
- 12:56Speaker 2: a little bit of a leash here and having, like
- 12:58Speaker 2: I said, with these injuries, obviously don't want to see
- 13:00Speaker 2: that happen, but who knows, maybe it could benefit them
- 13:03Speaker 2: come the end of the season here, having these young
- 13:05Speaker 2: guys get these consistent starts in the rotation. So for him,
- 13:09Speaker 2: I've really just seen him leaning on his fastball when
- 13:12Speaker 2: he needs it and kind of just letting it ride
- 13:13Speaker 2: in the zone and finally realizing that.
- 13:15Speaker 3: It plays really well at the big league level.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And he's able to lean on that and then you
- 13:19Speaker 2: can get to your good off speed stuff.
- 13:21Speaker 3: But for me, it's been the fastball. Last night.
- 13:23Speaker 2: He didn't have the greatest command with it like he
- 13:25Speaker 2: did the last couple of innings against the Marlins, but
- 13:27Speaker 2: he really when he needed a big pitch, he leaned
- 13:29Speaker 2: on it, and he was getting those pop ups again
- 13:31Speaker 2: like he was doing in Miami.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That's the thing that's most impressive to me, Brad is
- 13:37Speaker 4: I don't think in Brandon Young would say it.
- 13:39Speaker 5: He didn't have his a game last night.
- 13:41Speaker 4: But you will still take that start that he delivered
- 13:45Speaker 4: every single day of the week against that lineup, only
- 13:47Speaker 4: giving up three hits. He did have three walks, but
- 13:50Speaker 4: when you consider the first inning, guys, he threw twenty
- 13:54Speaker 4: nine pitches and thankfully he didn't give up any earned
- 13:57Speaker 4: runs in that first inning. And look, Ben Rice, he's
- 14:00Speaker 4: going to get a lot of people. You know, he
- 14:02Speaker 4: already has gotten a lot of people on the home
- 14:04Speaker 4: run that he gave up.
- 14:05Speaker 5: But oh and oh, you get Brandon Young a ton
- 14:08Speaker 5: of credit.
- 14:09Speaker 4: He went back out in the sixth inning, able to
- 14:12Speaker 4: get an out into the sixth inning.
- 14:14Speaker 5: That was exactly what the Orioles needed.
- 14:19Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting the ability to pitch up top
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the zone or above it. For many years in
- 14:26Speaker 1: baseball that was a big no, no, boy, you don't
- 14:28Speaker 1: throw up. Now the data Brad and I wondering if
- 14:32Speaker 1: that's what they look at and is called induce a
- 14:34Speaker 1: vertical break, which is I don't know a ton about
- 14:37Speaker 1: that except I know the numbers. When you see seventeen
- 14:40Speaker 1: eighteen nineteen, that's good and for me simplifying it, it
- 14:44Speaker 1: means he has good ride on his fastball that is
- 14:47Speaker 1: harder to get to at the top of the zone.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Was that prevalent towards the end of your career or
- 14:52Speaker 1: is that even newer than that.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it was definitely prevalent towards the end of my career.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean, there was a point couple of years ago
- 15:00Speaker 2: right after I got done, where it was nothing before
- 15:02Speaker 2: seamers up in the zone. You're starting to see the
- 15:04Speaker 2: sinker make a comeback again. But even so, guys are
- 15:07Speaker 2: throwing their sinkers at the top of the zone and
- 15:09Speaker 2: kind of using their off speed. Depending on the off
- 15:11Speaker 2: speed they have, but they'll throw at the top and
- 15:13Speaker 2: then use the off speed that compliments it at the bottom.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But yeah, it's been something that's been When I was playing,
- 15:18Speaker 2: it was called the sneaky fastball, and it was one
- 15:20Speaker 2: of those ones where we're invisib fastball, like invisible, like
- 15:23Speaker 2: you threw fastball right down the middle. Guys are swinging
- 15:25Speaker 2: and missing. That was induced vertical vertical break. We just
- 15:28Speaker 2: didn't have a term for it back in the day.
- 15:30Speaker 2: It was kind of, man, this guy's throwing invisible like
- 15:32Speaker 2: he's throwing right down the middle, getting swings and missus.
- 15:34Speaker 2: But now these guys have learned with the data with
- 15:36Speaker 2: the track man's that when you throw the pitch at
- 15:38Speaker 2: the top of the zone.
- 15:39Speaker 3: It's really hard to square up.
- 15:41Speaker 2: So Brandy Young for sure is using that data right
- 15:45Speaker 2: now and he's getting a lot of pop ups. And
- 15:47Speaker 2: last night, even with that sinker up in the zone,
- 15:49Speaker 2: I don't think exactly exactly the location he was looking for.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I think at Yankee Stadium that's probably a double ben
- 15:56Speaker 2: rice last night. But unfortunately, when you're playing at Candy Yards,
- 15:59Speaker 2: those are going to get out, but not a terrible pitch,
- 16:02Speaker 2: just probably not in location exactly he was looking for.
- 16:04Speaker 2: So but I'm just been really impressed with him, and
- 16:07Speaker 2: I think I think the Dad is coming back that,
- 16:09Speaker 2: hey man, you got to throw your fastball a lot more,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and you got to use it at the top of
- 16:12Speaker 2: the zone and just kind of locate it and then
- 16:14Speaker 2: use your all speed from there.
- 16:17Speaker 4: It is interesting just to see what becomes in vogue
- 16:20Speaker 4: when it comes to pitching it. You know, a couple
- 16:22Speaker 4: of years ago, I feel like everyone was picking up
- 16:24Speaker 4: a sweeper like Brad.
- 16:25Speaker 5: What do you think the biggest.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Change in pitching, you know, from the start of your
- 16:31Speaker 4: career to even now, what do you think that's been?
- 16:35Speaker 3: I think location?
- 16:35Speaker 2: To me, I think when I was pitching, everything was
- 16:38Speaker 2: down in a way. If you when I came up
- 16:40Speaker 2: with the Padres, they literally told us if you can't
- 16:42Speaker 2: throw a fastball down away for a strike eight out
- 16:44Speaker 2: of ten pitches, you're not going to pitch for us.
- 16:46Speaker 2: So the pitch down in a way two hitters just
- 16:49Speaker 2: really isn't prevalent anymore. A lot of guys swings have
- 16:52Speaker 2: kind of evolutionized to that.
- 16:54Speaker 3: And then the last couple of years too, with it.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Like I was saying, a lot of guys started throwing
- 16:58Speaker 2: four seamers at the top of the zone. Hitters adjusted
- 17:01Speaker 2: to that. So now the sinker came back. It's just
- 17:03Speaker 2: a constant cat and mouseking. And I remember having pitching
- 17:06Speaker 2: coaches who said, oh, the sinker will come back. It
- 17:08Speaker 2: just takes a little bit of time. It's always there.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Sinker slider guys will always be around. It's going to
- 17:13Speaker 2: take a couple of years to make its return. But
- 17:15Speaker 2: here we are now seeing guys throw sinker sliders again.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Whether it's a sweeper or it's a slider, it's very
- 17:21Speaker 2: similar pitch. So it just to me, I love seeing that.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I think it's a really cool aspect of the game.
- 17:25Speaker 2: And you really dive deep into the data, into the
- 17:28Speaker 2: what's going on the analytics side of things. It's really
- 17:31Speaker 2: cool to see the adjustments the pitchers make and then
- 17:33Speaker 2: the hitters catch up, and then it's back to make
- 17:35Speaker 2: another adjustment. Now they have, you know, whatever pitch is
- 17:38Speaker 2: in vogue now, but it always constantly seems to be changing,
- 17:41Speaker 2: but it's kind of still the same game regardless of
- 17:44Speaker 2: how it's being played.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Right, with a lot more data and the data even
- 17:49Speaker 1: the minor league pitchers tell me. They can tell them. Now, Okay,
- 17:53Speaker 1: here's three major leaguers with great sliders. Here's the data
- 17:57Speaker 1: they get on that. Here's your data. This is them.
- 18:01Speaker 1: This is where you need to get to. And if
- 18:02Speaker 1: you get to this data point, this spin rate, this
- 18:05Speaker 1: movement profile, you can get big league hitters out with
- 18:08Speaker 1: This slider doesn't always work one hundred percent, but you
- 18:11Speaker 1: didn't have it twenty years ago. You just knew. You
- 18:14Speaker 1: watch video maybe, or you can just watch your own movement.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You know you read bats. Now you can say, if
- 18:20Speaker 1: I gain certain data points, maybe I can have a
- 18:24Speaker 1: great slider. It's really amazing what's in the game right
- 18:27Speaker 1: now to make players better. Speaking of pitching, how about
- 18:33Speaker 1: late in the game. We want to get to that
- 18:34Speaker 1: in a moment. Here some great work by the Orioles
- 18:37Speaker 1: late in the game Monday night as they defeated the Yankees.
- 18:41Speaker 7: Big Dog. You know how it is, man, We're always hungry,
- 18:43Speaker 7: and how do we get our food. We don't want
- 18:46Speaker 7: the stuff that makes our bellies hurt. We go to
- 18:48Speaker 7: Hello Fresh. We find out specifically what we love to eat.
- 18:52Speaker 7: And guess what, Kratzy, I know it helps you out
- 18:54Speaker 7: the household. Wifey is happy and the kids are extra happy.
- 18:58Speaker 8: I'm good at two things, is one of them, but
- 19:01Speaker 8: not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've gone
- 19:04Speaker 8: fifteen meals so far and they haven't given me one
- 19:07Speaker 8: repeat meal. There's so many to choose from, and they
- 19:10Speaker 8: can make it easy for me.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Yeah, And I think the best part of it of
- 19:13Speaker 7: it is is for me. I'm very particular. I'm trying
- 19:15Speaker 7: new things and I'm really really liking these things from HelloFresh.

- 19:44Speaker 1: Quick club for my substack. I hate plugging my own material,
- 19:48Speaker 1: but if I don't do it, who will? And so
- 19:50Speaker 1: I cover the Orioles daily on my substack. You can
- 19:54Speaker 1: check it out Steve on baseball dot substack dot com.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And today I wrote a big feature on Viheva. He
- 20:00Speaker 1: was the Golden Spikes Award winner last year at Arkansas.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Big bat, pretty good glove and arm two. He gets
- 20:06Speaker 1: great grades from scouts to top ten oriel prospect. So
- 20:09Speaker 1: that's at Steve on Baseball dot substack dot com. Hopefully
- 20:13Speaker 1: you check that out. And a great kid from Hawaii.
- 20:16Speaker 1: He's very proud of his Hawaiian roots. He knows major
- 20:20Speaker 1: leaguers like Shane Victorino, is close with his family, and
- 20:23Speaker 1: so I enjoyed writing today about Bahiva ELOI who has
- 20:27Speaker 1: ten homers already. No real minor leaguer has more than that. So, guys,
- 20:32Speaker 1: some great work late in the game last night, the
- 20:35Speaker 1: save for Nunez, he did it again, and an unofficial
- 20:39Speaker 1: save we'll give to Garcia because that was heavy lifting
- 20:42Speaker 1: Farico in the eighth and he buzzed through Ben Rice,
- 20:46Speaker 1: Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger on nine pitches.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's really not any words you can
- 20:54Speaker 2: say about Rico Garcia at this point. I mean, one
- 20:57Speaker 2: hit now in nineteen innings is just unheard of. When
- 21:00Speaker 2: it's just funny that you know, Mason Miller out in
- 21:03Speaker 2: San Diego's getting all these headlines all this stuff, like
- 21:05Speaker 2: he throws one hundred and four but Rico guard I mean,
- 21:07Speaker 2: those stats are just absolutely insane. And to go out
- 21:10Speaker 2: there in the eighth inning, which is a lot harder
- 21:13Speaker 2: when you when he's been closing the last week. It's
- 21:15Speaker 2: a lot harder than fans might think. I know he's
- 21:17Speaker 2: not typically you know, the closer for the Orioles, but
- 21:20Speaker 2: when you've been pitching the ninth inning every game the
- 21:23Speaker 2: last couple of weeks with hels Leo, to be called
- 21:25Speaker 2: upon in the eighth inning, there is a little bit
- 21:27Speaker 2: different on your routine. And I think that job he
- 21:31Speaker 2: did last night was unbelievable. It was just I mean,
- 21:34Speaker 2: coming right at guys, just throwing that curveball to change up.
- 21:36Speaker 2: He's just has everything working right now, and like Ben
- 21:39Speaker 2: said on the broadcast last night, he really is in
- 21:41Speaker 2: his own When he's out there on the mound, you
- 21:43Speaker 2: can tell he's just he's thinking about his pitches, what
- 21:45Speaker 2: he's gonna throw, what he wants to throw next, and
- 21:48Speaker 2: he's kind of one hit pitch away ahead of the
- 21:51Speaker 2: hitters right now. And it's really fun to watch, and
- 21:53Speaker 2: it's it's great for a guy who's bounced around a
- 21:55Speaker 2: bunch too. It's just it's one of the stories that
- 21:57Speaker 2: should be gein a lot more publicity throughout Major League
- 22:00Speaker 2: Baseball right now.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Right, I'm with you they I don't know what more
- 22:04Speaker 5: to say about.
- 22:05Speaker 4: This guy, Like this guy is just spectacular what he's
- 22:09Speaker 4: doing in Steve, I'm with you one hundred percent, you
- 22:11Speaker 4: saying the unofficial save. The reason Craig albern has sent
- 22:16Speaker 4: him out there in the eighth inning is because he
- 22:18Speaker 4: was facing murderers row where you got Ben Rice, who
- 22:21Speaker 4: he struck out in four pitches. Aaron Judge ended up
- 22:24Speaker 4: popping out on the first pitch and then getting Bellinger
- 22:27Speaker 4: to strike out on four pitches. This is three that's
- 22:29Speaker 4: the meat of the lineup, and he worked through it
- 22:32Speaker 4: like a fuzz saw on nine pitches. It was really
- 22:35Speaker 4: really impressive. But I also think guys and Garcia and
- 22:39Speaker 4: Nungez and they deserve a ton of love. But teacher
- 22:42Speaker 4: Kens what he was able to do the inning prior Schnuman.
- 22:47Speaker 4: He ended up hitting that one out double and then
- 22:50Speaker 4: ends getting the strikeout and Pete ends up flipping the
- 22:53Speaker 4: ball behind him and he bare hands the ball to
- 22:57Speaker 4: get the out at first in at first base. It's unbelievable.
- 23:01Speaker 4: The strand to the runner at third base like that
- 23:04Speaker 4: was big time stuff from Hens.
- 23:07Speaker 2: And to me, also, when you think about the bullpen,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think what turns good bullpens into great bullpens is
- 23:11Speaker 2: what exactly happened last night, keeping the score at two zero.
- 23:15Speaker 2: When it starts to creep the three zero, four zero,
- 23:18Speaker 2: then it really becomes heavy lifting and they try to
- 23:20Speaker 2: come back in that game. But keeping the score where
- 23:22Speaker 2: it was is really what determines a great bullpen from
- 23:25Speaker 2: a good bullpen. And I've mentioned multiple times, but I
- 23:28Speaker 2: truly think this could be a great bullpen for the Orioles.
- 23:30Speaker 2: They're having multiple guys step up, obviously, you know we've
- 23:34Speaker 2: mentioned Garcia and Nunyaz a bunch on the show, but
- 23:38Speaker 2: just having everybody else fill a role makes the bullpen
- 23:41Speaker 2: that much stronger, that much deeper, and it really shortens
- 23:44Speaker 2: these games. And it's I just hope they continue to
- 23:46Speaker 2: get these opportunities to shorten these games up because they
- 23:49Speaker 2: could be really fun the rest of the season if
- 23:51Speaker 2: they are able to do that.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And we forget Helsley has been perfect in save chances
- 23:57Speaker 1: and is on the injured list. He gave us an
- 23:59Speaker 1: update pre game yesterday basically said he's just getting ready
- 24:02Speaker 1: to start throwing. The good news was the inflammation was
- 24:06Speaker 1: just that the scans are clean. There's no ligament damage
- 24:09Speaker 1: in his elbow. He feels good. He said that repeatedly,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and he knows he's got to get in some minor
- 24:14Speaker 1: league games. Most likely he's got to build back up.
- 24:16Speaker 1: So this is a couple of weeks they're going you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: these guys doing it at the back end, who have
- 24:20Speaker 1: done a great job at his absence, they need to
- 24:22Speaker 1: keep doing it because they're not going to have Hellesley
- 24:24Speaker 1: in the next week. It might be June one ish
- 24:28Speaker 1: and so Rico and Nunez. Wow, they're carrying the load here.
- 24:32Speaker 5: And Brad with those two guys.
- 24:34Speaker 4: And I'm sure Albernad any manager, when you have two
- 24:37Speaker 4: of those guys, especially Garcia that's really in a nice
- 24:41Speaker 4: groove here, you want to lean on.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Him as much as you could possibly do it.
- 24:45Speaker 4: And I think of Brandon Hyde with Felix Baltista at
- 24:48Speaker 4: the height of his powers in twenty twenty three, where
- 24:50Speaker 4: he's getting four.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Or five six out sieves.
- 24:53Speaker 4: You know, take us in in the mind of a reliever,
- 24:56Speaker 4: where both of those guys they pitched in the prior game. Nunez,
- 25:00Speaker 4: I think he threw twenty four pitches on Sunday and
- 25:02Speaker 4: then came out to close that game. How is it
- 25:05Speaker 4: doing back to backs and then sometimes even three straight?
- 25:09Speaker 5: You're three of four?
- 25:11Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I mean when you with the mindset of a reliever,
- 25:15Speaker 2: you're you know, you got to pitch back to back.
- 25:17Speaker 2: It's it's, you know, one of the main purposes of
- 25:20Speaker 2: the job. The third day is a little tricky. It
- 25:22Speaker 2: turns into depending on what the team wants to do.
- 25:24Speaker 2: It depends on the schedule coming up. A lot of
- 25:26Speaker 2: times you want to avoid the third game because then
- 25:28Speaker 2: you're kind of looking at having two days off in
- 25:31Speaker 2: a row. At least most managers will try to do that.
- 25:33Speaker 2: There was times in my career, but we talked about
- 25:35Speaker 2: before the show. The game's changed a lot. I mean,
- 25:37Speaker 2: I had, you know, six out of eight, five out
- 25:40Speaker 2: of six. You know, it's changed a lot. They've done
- 25:42Speaker 2: a lot to help protect these relievers, and really they're
- 25:45Speaker 2: trying to get one hundred percent of them. So when
- 25:48Speaker 2: they're when you're being asked you need to go out
- 25:51Speaker 2: one hundred percent, and they want to make sure that
- 25:53Speaker 2: you're at least feeling close to eighty ninety percent of
- 25:55Speaker 2: your you know, one hundred percent feeling on any given day.
- 25:58Speaker 2: But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised with this series being
- 26:01Speaker 2: so big and with the off they come in Thursday,
- 26:03Speaker 2: that they don't ask these guys for a third night tonight.
- 26:06Speaker 3: But if it doesn't happen, you just got to be.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It's one of those tricky things because if say they
- 26:12Speaker 2: go out there, they give up the lead tonight, now
- 26:14Speaker 2: you're without those guys two days in a row, and
- 26:16Speaker 2: it just gets a little tricky with the bullpen. So
- 26:18Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if one of them was up
- 26:20Speaker 2: today and the other one was down, depending on you know,
- 26:22Speaker 2: what part of the lineup comes up. But it's the
- 26:25Speaker 2: bullpen game is tricky. I think it's when you have
- 26:29Speaker 2: as many weapons as they have, you have the luxury
- 26:31Speaker 2: to kind of have one of these guys take a
- 26:33Speaker 2: day off because you just don't want to turn into
- 26:34Speaker 2: a red situation where they've thrown three in a row,
- 26:37Speaker 2: four to five. You know, it just gets really tricky
- 26:39Speaker 2: when you start running these games up in a row
- 26:42Speaker 2: on these guys.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Well we continue in a moment, I want to ask
- 26:46Speaker 1: these guys. I want to make a comment about Abernas
- 26:48Speaker 1: and some moves and see what Brad and Tim think
- 26:51Speaker 1: about what I think, and then that'll be coming up
- 26:54Speaker 1: in a second here on Birdland Territory.
- 26:57Speaker 6: Big Bad Morning Show, Benny and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 27:02Speaker 6: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one O
- 27:06Speaker 6: five seven the Fan, Subscribe for daily shorts right to
- 27:09Speaker 6: your phone and never missed which I missed one O
- 27:12Speaker 6: five seven the Fan.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So, guys, for first year manager, I give Craig alburn
- 27:18Speaker 1: as credit. He if he's convicted, he makes the move.
- 27:22Speaker 1: He pitched hit for Besio having a great game and
- 27:24Speaker 1: it worked out last night in real time. I said
- 27:27Speaker 1: to Luke Jones, sits next to me in the press box,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I'm bringing Rico back out for the ninth nine pitches.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He just rolled through those guys. You gotta get this win.
- 27:36Speaker 1: You got to give him a second inning. He didn't.
- 27:38Speaker 1: He went to Nunez, who's been pretty good admittedly, So
- 27:42Speaker 1: for me, when he's convicted with a move, he's gonna
- 27:46Speaker 1: make it. He's not timid about doing things that get him.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Second guest, I guess.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I'm saying, yeah, I agree.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I think last night he had a plan and it
- 27:55Speaker 2: was Rico Garcia, if we had the lead, was going
- 27:58Speaker 2: to pitch the seventh, eighth or ninth. I think might
- 28:00Speaker 2: have even been the seventh inning if that lineup had
- 28:02Speaker 2: had the middle guys come in there, if they had
- 28:04Speaker 2: the lead.
- 28:05Speaker 3: And yeah, you're right.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I think when you're a manager, you just have to
- 28:08Speaker 2: you have a plan before the game. Obviously things can
- 28:10Speaker 2: happen during the game that can change things, but if
- 28:13Speaker 2: you have a plan in mind, you just got to
- 28:14Speaker 2: stick to it.
- 28:15Speaker 3: And this just shows trust.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I mean the trust he's putting in Unia's as a
- 28:19Speaker 2: rookie five weeks, six weeks into the season, in his
- 28:22Speaker 2: first year in the big leagues is tremendous, and I
- 28:25Speaker 2: think Nunia's is feeding off of that trust of his manager.
- 28:27Speaker 2: So I think at this point it's he has guys
- 28:30Speaker 2: he trust, and I think I would have not been
- 28:33Speaker 2: against Rico pitching the ninth last night, But the fact
- 28:36Speaker 2: that he threw nunia Is out there shows you and
- 28:37Speaker 2: tells you everything you need to know about what he
- 28:39Speaker 2: thinks about that kid.
- 28:41Speaker 4: I think that sort of dovetails into what we were
- 28:44Speaker 4: just talking prior to hitting that break. To be honest,
- 28:47Speaker 4: where Brad you brought up the point, maybe one of
- 28:49Speaker 4: them is up, one of them's down today. Maybe Nounia's
- 28:54Speaker 4: is down and Garcia is up because he only threw
- 28:57Speaker 4: nine pitches and maybe he could do three straight games
- 29:00Speaker 4: where NEWNGA is. Like I was saying, I think he
- 29:02Speaker 4: threw twenty four pitches on Sunday and through a decent
- 29:06Speaker 4: amount yesterday. So maybe he's down, but you save Garcia
- 29:10Speaker 4: for a possible save opportunity tonight. Could be my feeling
- 29:15Speaker 4: with what Craig Albernas was thinking, but I was with you, Steve.
- 29:18Speaker 4: I definitely was thinking, hey, bring him back out, man,
- 29:21Speaker 4: he's unhittable right now.
- 29:23Speaker 3: You know what's too It's funny, sorry, Steve.
- 29:25Speaker 2: I just remember Buck always saying he never was willing
- 29:28Speaker 2: to mortgage games down the line for that game tonight,
- 29:31Speaker 2: and I think that's you know, it's it's kind of
- 29:34Speaker 2: an old school mentality, I think with the way the
- 29:35Speaker 2: games played today, but I think it still kind of
- 29:37Speaker 2: stands true because you're not willing to kind of ruin
- 29:41Speaker 2: games down the way to go get the one tonight,
- 29:44Speaker 2: and I think albern has had a play last night
- 29:46Speaker 2: and he was going to stick to it with tonight
- 29:48Speaker 2: and tomorrow in mind, and I think that's kind of
- 29:50Speaker 2: what he what he kind of rolled with and it
- 29:52Speaker 2: worked out.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Listen, if Nunez gives it up the whole storyline this
- 29:57Speaker 1: morning in Bolin Worres, how could you have taken Enrico
- 30:00Speaker 1: Garcia out of that game? He's given up one hit
- 30:04Speaker 1: all year. He rolled through on nine pitches. He made
- 30:07Speaker 1: that move you said he was convicted in and he
- 30:10Speaker 1: made it, and I think it does And I want
- 30:12Speaker 1: to ask Nunyaz about that if I get a chance today.
- 30:14Speaker 1: What you said, Brad about that says everything in the
- 30:16Speaker 1: world about how the manager feels about him, because Nunya
- 30:19Speaker 1: has watched that ending too and probably thought, well, they're
- 30:22Speaker 1: not going to me now look at it. He just
- 30:24Speaker 1: look at what he did. So I think that's big

- 30:30Speaker 1: knocking on wood for the Orioles that they get it
- 30:33Speaker 1: going here, guys, and we have more exciting things to
- 30:36Speaker 1: talk about. So, guys, another one in the books. Thank
- 30:40Speaker 1: you for all the great insights Brad and Tim and
- 30:43Speaker 1: oriol fans, thanks for finding us. Keep subscribing to Birdland
- 30:47Speaker 1: Territory and we'll see you next time.
