- 1:03Speaker 5: I feel like I don't In the lyric before she's

- 1:40Speaker 7: the river's all wet.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Wait both, she says both. She says the river's all
- 1:48Speaker 5: wet and glitters all wet.
- 1:50Speaker 8: A dried up river can be is also known as

- 1:58Speaker 8: are tough, sometimes or a wash in an arid region arroyo.

- 2:07Speaker 8: are indeed, we.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Yeah, interesting, If they're not, then it's not a river.

- 3:18Speaker 8: I don't know, did I just get judged for bringing
- 3:20Speaker 8: all this up. Was very relevant to the show. Yeah, great,
- 3:24Speaker 8: you know, so not.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Only is the river wet, but water water is water.
- 3:32Speaker 8: Well, I'll do have one more one more thing, Dad,
- 3:34Speaker 8: An intermittent stream is a river that only flows at
- 3:37Speaker 8: certain times of the year.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Okay, so there's a lot of different types of rivers.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Apparently your favorite river Mississippi red m the Red River
- 3:48Speaker 4: is a good one to go on. Thank you.
- 3:50Speaker 6: You got to answer your favorite river Missississippi.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Okay, on Red River separates shreaveboard in Bosure.
- 4:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Yeah, Oklahoma Texas playing that that game the Red Yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 6: it's been like the shootout, but I can't say shootout anymo.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Apparently.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Oh yeah, it's a Red River rivalry, which is very
- 4:10Speaker 5: hard to say.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Can I finish my thought from the last segment, because
- 4:14Speaker 5: I feel like I came off as like one of
- 4:16Speaker 5: those people that's like, oh, everybody hates women. No, that's
- 4:18Speaker 5: not what I was meaning to say, because he did
- 4:20Speaker 5: call out Kochie as well.
- 4:22Speaker 6: But like Danny, well Danny, and like I don't I
- 4:25Speaker 6: don't know who you saw, but Danny did call it
- 4:26Speaker 6: multiple people.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Oh wait, do we want to Taylor has a vis
- 4:29Speaker 5: I have her explanation.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Okay, sure, go ahead.
- 4:32Speaker 10: I don't know how is you know, I wake up
- 4:35Speaker 10: early in the morning after covering a game late in
- 4:38Speaker 10: the night before. Don't want to go too much into
- 4:41Speaker 10: my progress or process or logic, but I will say
- 4:44Speaker 10: I appreciate everybody's interaction on social media and all of
- 4:49Speaker 10: your feedback. You know, there's tons of people that vote
- 4:52Speaker 10: on the ep pole and like it's not a perfect system,
- 4:56Speaker 10: but at the end of the day, like no matter
- 4:58Speaker 10: who you pick, it does even out because there's so
- 5:00Speaker 10: many people who vote, and like I said, it's really
- 5:04Speaker 10: fun for discussion. It doesn't you know, probably matter in
- 5:08Speaker 10: the end, but I'm glad that people are having a
- 5:11Speaker 10: really good time with you.
- 5:11Speaker 5: But as far as I feel like it kind of
- 5:15Speaker 5: does matter if you have a.
- 5:16Speaker 6: Vote, Yeah, I mean it matters, Like you want to
- 5:19Speaker 6: make sure you're going through Like everybody's process is different,
- 5:22Speaker 6: but whatever the process is, make sure that you're giving
- 5:25Speaker 6: it the full attention that it deserves and needs.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Pretty sure, she just said she did she did it
- 5:29Speaker 2: when she was drunk.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Over night.
- 5:34Speaker 8: Sure, She's like, I did it pretty late at night.
- 5:36Speaker 8: I don't want to really go into details. I don't
- 5:38Speaker 8: even have an issue pretty.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Much with the voting.
- 5:41Speaker 7: I mean, moving Florida up after a loss is wild,
- 5:43Speaker 7: but like you truly believe that it's fine. I thought
- 5:46Speaker 7: she was going to get on here and like give
- 5:47Speaker 7: a full explanation everything.
- 5:49Speaker 3: She literally was like, I mean, even's out, like somebody
- 5:51Speaker 3: did it right, is wrong, and then.
- 5:53Speaker 7: It doesn't really matter on business doesn't really matter in
- 5:56Speaker 7: the end, goes like.
- 5:58Speaker 5: If you're going to move Florida up to spots after
- 6:00Speaker 5: they lost, at least have a reason for it other
- 6:03Speaker 5: than it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day,
- 6:06Speaker 5: I was hungover, who cares?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Like, but it's fun for discussion though, I.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Mean, I guess it is. We are discussing it.
- 6:12Speaker 8: Does she get that interview without doing it? Good for her?
- 6:15Speaker 7: She said, She said it's fun to have a discussion
- 6:17Speaker 7: and it doesn't really matter.
- 6:18Speaker 5: But also she says she appreciates everybody's discussion about it,
- 6:22Speaker 5: but they went private on Twitter when everybody was yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 7: It's just it's it's just a bunch of contradictions, Like
- 6:28Speaker 7: that's why I think like most of the heats coming
- 6:31Speaker 7: from not the pole itself. Yeah, A reaction to it
- 6:33Speaker 7: is awful and.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Not I don't mean this in like an annoying way,
- 6:37Speaker 5: but she does deserve all the heat. But then it
- 6:40Speaker 5: just it gives people so much credence to insult women
- 6:45Speaker 5: even more. I don't know, I know, I'm right a
- 6:50Speaker 5: little bit. Yeah, and it's well deserved, Like I don't
- 6:54Speaker 5: I'm not saying don't talk about it because she's a
- 6:56Speaker 5: girl or whatever, but it is deserved.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I hope it was fun.
- 7:01Speaker 4: I just think, I mean, I just think if you have.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Just give it the respect, like I was going to say,
- 7:07Speaker 2: like respected.
- 7:08Speaker 4: The respected, deserves, sit down, spend some time on it.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I got.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I don't have an AP vote.
- 7:14Speaker 6: I'll never have an AP vote, but I do have
- 7:15Speaker 6: a Heisman vote, and I take it very serious. You
- 7:20Speaker 6: should like it is something that like I don't ever
- 7:23Speaker 6: want to give back. So I want to make sure
- 7:24Speaker 6: I do the process right. I don't talk about who
- 7:26Speaker 6: I'm voting for beforehand because that's not allowed, so I
- 7:29Speaker 6: don't do it. And I watch tape of about eight
- 7:33Speaker 6: to ten players that I feel like could be in
- 7:35Speaker 6: New York, and I watch them against their best opponents.
- 7:39Speaker 6: And I watched tape for about two weeks before I
- 7:43Speaker 6: decide and I turned my votes.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Inly you talked about it after that, yes, after the fact,
- 7:47Speaker 8: I can you talked about on this show like the process, And.
- 7:51Speaker 6: I know I don't really think I ever did, because
- 7:54Speaker 6: every time I bring it up t B, I was like, well,
- 7:55Speaker 6: how do I get a Heisman?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Tebb?
- 7:57Speaker 4: I don't really know.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well, let's let's let's dive in last year.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I went, Travis Hunter won Camp Skataboo two and
- 8:05Speaker 6: Ashton gent three. Is that kind of is that holded
- 8:08Speaker 6: it up? Like the Camp Skatobo didn't even get to
- 8:11Speaker 6: New York. I thought Camp Skataboo deserved to be there.
- 8:15Speaker 6: He was somebody that I don't want to say single handle.
- 8:19Speaker 6: It's a team sport, but I mean he kind of
- 8:21Speaker 6: got Arizona State to the quarterfinal in.
- 8:25Speaker 8: That playoff game too, Like he was you can rally,
- 8:30Speaker 8: I mean, like you your vote was definitely right on
- 8:34Speaker 8: after the fact when you.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Watch that playoff.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, look, incredible Travis Hunter did. Was incredible
- 8:39Speaker 6: to be able to play both sides of the football
- 8:42Speaker 6: at a very high level on a nine win football team,
- 8:45Speaker 6: uh to be able to retain the knowledge, to be
- 8:47Speaker 6: able to play both sides of the football, which is
- 8:49Speaker 6: something a lot of people don't talk about. So like
- 8:51Speaker 6: that went into my thought process, you know, Like I said,
- 8:54Speaker 6: I try to pay respect to the vote that I
- 8:56Speaker 6: have high quarterback from Army. Bryson Daily, Yeah, probably, Like
- 9:02Speaker 6: I had a hard time leaving him off my ballot,
- 9:04Speaker 6: but you only get three.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Bryceon Daily was awesome at Army last year.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Remember, Army was like in the conversation of a college
- 9:10Speaker 6: football playoff team out of the G five spot from
- 9:13Speaker 6: a year ago, and you know they fell just short.
- 9:16Speaker 6: You know they'd be too lame, I believe in the
- 9:17Speaker 6: American Championship Game, then they lost Army and Navy. Did
- 9:19Speaker 6: he get some boats, you get some votes, Yeah for sure.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Like again, I didn't put him top three, but it
- 9:24Speaker 6: was hard to keep him off.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And now God fighting for the USMA.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah for sure.
- 9:29Speaker 6: So look again, like and I don't want to just
- 9:32Speaker 6: throw shade at the eight people. There's some people, I'm
- 9:34Speaker 6: sure that take it exactly as serious as we're talking about.
- 9:38Speaker 6: I'm sure there's some people that sit down every single
- 9:40Speaker 6: week and they have a process and they've been doing
- 9:43Speaker 6: it for ten, twenty thirty years. I actually would like
- 9:46Speaker 6: to have somebody on that has an AP vote. I
- 9:49Speaker 6: don't know, No Batteries has Maybe maybe Rabs has one.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Maybe we can have money. He can talk about his process.
- 9:58Speaker 6: But like the Coach's poll, I don't I don't say
- 10:00Speaker 6: this for every coach, but I know a lot of
- 10:02Speaker 6: coaches that allow their SID to be the person that
- 10:06Speaker 6: votes for their top twenty five, and the coaches pull
- 10:08Speaker 6: because look, I'm a coach. That's what I'm trying to get.
- 10:11Speaker 6: I'm trying to get ready for. You know, what blitz
- 10:15Speaker 6: are they going to bring this week? Are they going
- 10:17Speaker 6: to play quarters or quarter quarter has? Are they going
- 10:19Speaker 6: to run gap schemers, zone scheme? When it comes to like,
- 10:22Speaker 6: I'm not worried about twenty four other teams in the
- 10:25Speaker 6: top twenty five. That's not the team I'm coaching. So
- 10:28Speaker 6: like I get it, Like why do we have it?
- 10:30Speaker 8: I know especially it has because like head coaches have
- 10:33Speaker 8: more to think about now than they ever have because
- 10:35Speaker 8: they got roster management to deal with. Like when usually
- 10:39Speaker 8: back in the day, in the good old days, roster
- 10:42Speaker 8: was your roster. That's the roster you're going with. One
- 10:45Speaker 8: signing day comes in February. That's it now they got
- 10:48Speaker 8: I mean, I don't envy the coaching position these days
- 10:51Speaker 8: in college football, So they especially don't have an extra
- 10:55Speaker 8: an hour to go sit down and really think about
- 10:59Speaker 8: the South Florida. If they're gonna be in the winter,
- 11:03Speaker 8: they can be eighteen or nineteen in my pole, they don't.
- 11:05Speaker 8: They don't have that time.
- 11:07Speaker 4: So and too the like for them, like they hadn't
- 11:11Speaker 4: if you're not playing South Florida or you hadn't played
- 11:13Speaker 4: a team that you know played them and you just
- 11:15Speaker 4: so happen to see their tape, Like you're not gonna
- 11:17Speaker 4: go watch South Florida.
- 11:19Speaker 6: If you're you know, in the Big ten and it
- 11:24Speaker 6: doesn't matter to your bottom line.
- 11:27Speaker 8: That's I mean, that's a good point. But how many
- 11:28Speaker 8: AP people are actually going to watch film of everybody either?
- 11:31Speaker 6: I was just about to say, like the AP is
- 11:34Speaker 6: made up of different people across the country, like it does.
- 11:39Speaker 6: There need to be another pot, be in another pole
- 11:42Speaker 6: where it's just like national media members.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 11:45Speaker 6: I mean, like my process for getting ready for this
- 11:49Speaker 6: show is different than my process getting ready for off campus.
- 11:53Speaker 6: For this show, I'm gonna be lsu certainly like heavy
- 11:56Speaker 6: and then SEC is gonna fill up the rest of it.
- 11:59Speaker 6: For the other one, I gotta talk about Luke altmar
- 12:02Speaker 6: in Illinois, all right, I gotta talk about Sawyer Robinson
- 12:05Speaker 6: and Baylor.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Right, I gotta talk about Dan Mullen and what.
- 12:08Speaker 6: He's doing at UNLB because it's every team, every conference,
- 12:12Speaker 6: so it's a different process. So whatever, like, whatever the
- 12:15Speaker 6: process is, like, just make sure that you're giving it
- 12:18Speaker 6: the respect that it deserves.
- 12:22Speaker 8: I didn't agree with her on one thing, though I
- 12:24Speaker 8: agree with her on one thing. At the end of
- 12:26Speaker 8: the day, as former like players and his players, polls
- 12:28Speaker 8: don't matter at all. But for doing stuff like this
- 12:32Speaker 8: talking about he does create drama, which is football while
- 12:37Speaker 8: it's creates drama, gives good talking points, gives something for
- 12:40Speaker 8: people to get upset about, get happy about, false sense
- 12:45Speaker 8: of security, and it gives us something to argue about.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It's great.
- 12:49Speaker 8: That's why Sports and Football Season it's the best reality
- 12:52Speaker 8: TV show out there.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Drama.
- 12:56Speaker 8: Hey, speaking of drama, Taylor, do you watch finished the
- 13:00Speaker 8: Dallas Cowboy documentary?
- 13:03Speaker 2: No? I finished it last night. Was it was actually
- 13:07Speaker 2: pretty good?
- 13:08Speaker 8: I actually kind of almost brought a tear to my Okay,
- 13:11Speaker 8: I don't believe. Well, I mean, I grew that was
- 13:14Speaker 8: the team I grew up with watching, and you know, but.
- 13:17Speaker 3: What you're saying is we've both moved on.
- 13:20Speaker 8: I moved on, like I made a lot better life
- 13:24Speaker 8: decisions when I moved on than you did. I thought, honestly,
- 13:28Speaker 8: for the for the last three three and a half months,
- 13:31Speaker 8: I thought you're a pretty smart guy. Now I just
- 13:33Speaker 8: realize you're dumb.
- 13:35Speaker 7: I will say, it took you a lot longer than
- 13:38Speaker 7: most people, So I do appreciate fair.
- 13:40Speaker 8: Fair Do you appreciate that? That was the perfect response, the
- 13:43Speaker 8: only response.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So great job.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I would recommend it. It was very good.
- 13:48Speaker 8: It was like the first episodes a little nauseating because
- 13:50Speaker 8: it's like Jerry talking about like how much he loves himself.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But after you get past that part watched I watched
- 13:55Speaker 2: the first one. After you get.
- 13:57Speaker 8: Past that part, it's it's pretty it's pretty good. I've
- 14:00Speaker 8: watched anything get into more like personalities of like the
- 14:04Speaker 8: players and the coaches, and the coaches, drama between like
- 14:08Speaker 8: Jimmy Johnson, and then when Barry Switzer came on board,
- 14:11Speaker 8: there was drama between him and Troy Yikman.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I never knew about.
- 14:15Speaker 8: But yeah, did not like Barry Switzer, tell you what
- 14:19Speaker 8: not a fan for, Like the amount of attention that
- 14:21Speaker 8: like concussions got for a long time.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Troy Aikman had a lot of concussions and he still is.
- 14:29Speaker 2: He just threw the balls with the one in the middle.
- 14:32Speaker 2: O in the middle.
- 14:33Speaker 4: There's three of them, just picked the one in the middle.
- 14:35Speaker 2: The good lord. Football used to be a different game
- 14:36Speaker 2: of this.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, good lord.
- 14:40Speaker 6: I mean even when we first got like into it's like, oh,
- 14:43Speaker 6: you can have a five man wedge on kickoff return. Cool,
- 14:46Speaker 6: let's go hit that. Here comes the l five? Where
- 14:53Speaker 6: am I Taylor?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Great? All right?
- 14:57Speaker 4: Are you? Are you dealing with? Is water wet?
- 15:01Speaker 2: We're ready?
- 15:01Speaker 6: Like when we call those We got doctor Stevens set
- 15:04Speaker 6: to join us. A lot of a lot of injuries,
- 15:09Speaker 6: lots of injuries to talk about, to discuss and try
- 15:11Speaker 6: to get a timeline on maybe what.
- 15:13Speaker 4: That rehab process looks like.
- 15:16Speaker 6: I also want to go around some of the other

- 16:54Speaker 12: Off the Bench, all right, welcome back in OTB.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I love Wednesday a fifteen. So our guy, doctor Stephen
- 17:17Speaker 4: Etheridge joins us again. Doc. How we doing, how we living?
- 17:20Speaker 2: Doing great?
- 17:20Speaker 4: Doing great?
- 17:22Speaker 2: All right?
- 17:23Speaker 6: So, unfortunately, we've got a long list of injuries to
- 17:27Speaker 6: go over when it comes to teams that we care about.
- 17:30Speaker 6: But I want to start with the New Orleans Saints
- 17:32Speaker 6: because one of their star safeties had a labroom tear,
- 17:36Speaker 6: and you know, we kind of talked about a little bit,
- 17:38Speaker 6: but I wanted to wait to get you in because
- 17:41Speaker 6: I had a labroom tear and kept playing. But it
- 17:43Speaker 6: was in December, and it's like, okay, well we got
- 17:46Speaker 6: a bye week and then we had the playoffs and
- 17:48Speaker 6: it's like we'll worry about that later. But it was December,
- 17:50Speaker 6: so it's like we're not going to have that many
- 17:52Speaker 6: games left, like we're in the playoffs.
- 17:54Speaker 4: But the most we can have four or five.
- 17:56Speaker 6: What's the difference like if you have a labrum tear
- 17:59Speaker 6: like early in the season, certainly when you play a
- 18:01Speaker 6: physical position where you're gonna be using your shoulder, and
- 18:04Speaker 6: how how different can the severity may be of a
- 18:06Speaker 6: laborm tear bee.
- 18:07Speaker 13: Yeah, we started talking about laborl injuries. It it is
- 18:10Speaker 13: a can of worms here. You have you have two
- 18:12Speaker 13: joints in the buy that have a laborum, the hip
- 18:14Speaker 13: and the shoulders. If your two ball and socket joints,
- 18:16Speaker 13: and we're talking about a shoulder here, and the laborum
- 18:19Speaker 13: and the shoulder mostly adds stability to the shoulder, so
- 18:22Speaker 13: it's something that doesn't necessarily work for strength and motion
- 18:25Speaker 13: as much as its stability. So it's inside the shoulder,
- 18:27Speaker 13: between the ball and the socket. It sort of adds
- 18:29Speaker 13: this cartilage cup that sort of adds support.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Around the shoulder.
- 18:33Speaker 13: And the interesting with laborams is it's it's like I said,
- 18:36Speaker 13: it's opened this big, big, big can of worms here
- 18:38Speaker 13: because a lot of labor injuries with even alone completely
- 18:41Speaker 13: for what's worth, I actually tore both the.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Mine and my shoulders. I never mind fixed.
- 18:45Speaker 13: Yeah, my left eye didn't, my right when I did,
- 18:47Speaker 13: my right shoulder was very unstable. It keeps sliding out
- 18:49Speaker 13: on me, popping out of socket, and depending on how
- 18:52Speaker 13: stable the joint is. You know, we see it in
- 18:53Speaker 13: pictures all the time, a picture because of the repetitive use.
- 18:56Speaker 13: They'll they'll use the tear their labor Yeah, and in
- 18:58Speaker 13: that scenario we usual leave it at unless it's giving
- 19:01Speaker 13: them a problem. So that's when it gets really tough.
- 19:03Speaker 13: But then, on the other hand, like you said, if
- 19:04Speaker 13: it's earlier in the year, and we keep dislocating this shoulder,
- 19:07Speaker 13: even just subluxing it, which is like a partial dislocation.
- 19:10Speaker 13: So if we keep doing that, you're gonna slowly kind
- 19:13Speaker 13: of stretch that ligament out more. You're gonna stretch the
- 19:15Speaker 13: laborm out more, maybe tear it worse, stretch the joint
- 19:18Speaker 13: capsule out, and sometimes you even start seeing bone laws.
- 19:20Speaker 13: You know, you have the the socket and the ball,
- 19:22Speaker 13: and if you start rubbing those together so much that
- 19:24Speaker 13: bone starts to erode, and then that's a much more
- 19:27Speaker 13: difficult fix. So is it something that you can usually
- 19:29Speaker 13: play with?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Sure?
- 19:31Speaker 13: Is it something that you should always play with? Probably not,
- 19:34Speaker 13: But then there are times it's fine. If you're stable.
- 19:36Speaker 13: If you're stable and you're not popping out of socket,
- 19:38Speaker 13: and it's just something that over time kind of wore
- 19:40Speaker 13: down on you. You you know again, like I said, I've
- 19:41Speaker 13: got one and my left shoulder and it never bothers me.
- 19:44Speaker 13: You know, I can't remember the last time and knock
- 19:46Speaker 13: on wood, it gave me any issues.
- 19:48Speaker 4: You can go home and you be like it's coming.
- 19:53Speaker 8: Had a lot of push ups in studio at breaks
- 19:56Speaker 8: and my shoulders hurt. Now, is that is that two
- 19:59Speaker 8: torn labor? Probably No, it's just you're forty dropped the ladder. Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 4: I think that's probably more the case there.
- 20:06Speaker 6: So we okay, So when you have a labor them obviously,
- 20:09Speaker 6: like if you're gonna miss time, it's probably because you
- 20:11Speaker 6: have the situation you're talking about where you can't really
- 20:13Speaker 6: keep the shoulder in. And I think, I don't know
- 20:16Speaker 6: if you've been through that. I know you and I
- 20:17Speaker 6: have the positions we play, we've been through that before.
- 20:19Speaker 6: And it's not like putting your shoulder back in. It's
- 20:22Speaker 6: not fun.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And like after you do it like.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Two or three times, you're like, all right, this, I
- 20:25Speaker 4: need to find a solution for this.
- 20:27Speaker 13: Yeah, And it's it's usually know, if we have a
- 20:29Speaker 13: guy that has this injury, you know, it's there's there's
- 20:31Speaker 13: a lot that goes into it.
- 20:32Speaker 6: You know.
- 20:32Speaker 13: One of these themes that probably will come up almost
- 20:34Speaker 13: every time we talk about these is severity. You know,
- 20:36Speaker 13: we'll look at the guy, we'll do our physical exam,
- 20:38Speaker 13: we'll talk to them, you know, we'll get the MRIs,
- 20:39Speaker 13: we'll get the information, and then you have that discussion
- 20:41Speaker 13: and it's it's really a shared decision making where right,
- 20:45Speaker 13: you know, there's injuries where we're gonna tell a guy, look,
- 20:46Speaker 13: you can't play with this. This is you know, you
- 20:48Speaker 13: tear your A c L. I don't want you to
- 20:49Speaker 13: destroy your kneed. Yeah, there's other injuries where it's like.
- 20:51Speaker 6: Don't pull the Philip Rivers and play in the AFC
- 20:53Speaker 6: Championship game with no A c L.
- 20:55Speaker 13: Yeah, not a good idea, not a good idea. But
- 20:57Speaker 13: but then even there, you know, it's AFC Championship. How
- 20:59Speaker 13: many of those do you get to? And we do
- 21:00Speaker 13: have those discussions there and as much as health and
- 21:03Speaker 13: safety always come first, there's an injury line that we
- 21:07Speaker 13: sometimes are willing to cross. Right, it's a championship week
- 21:09Speaker 13: championship game. Maybe I'm gonna play with something. And being
- 21:12Speaker 13: a foreign player, I look at it that way as well,
- 21:14Speaker 13: and I think that's what some of that is helpful.
- 21:15Speaker 13: I'm like, look, I get it. I want to play. Yeah,
- 21:17Speaker 13: And there's times you gotta tell a guy, man, no,
- 21:19Speaker 13: you can't play with this. It's it's it's all relative.
- 21:21Speaker 13: So so there's a lot that goes into it. But
- 21:23Speaker 13: we talk to the guys, we look at the exams,
- 21:25Speaker 13: we do all that, and then and then we talk
- 21:26Speaker 13: about it.
- 21:27Speaker 2: We say what do you want to do? What is safe?
- 21:29Speaker 13: We give them the risk, and then we make that decision.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Doc.
- 21:32Speaker 8: When when it comes to like muscle tears, muscle injuries,
- 21:39Speaker 8: if the decision is made for the for the player
- 21:41Speaker 8: to play through the pain and make that decision too.
- 21:45Speaker 8: You know, I got a teared labor, torn labor or whatever,
- 21:47Speaker 8: I'm gonna play through it.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Like what is the process?
- 21:50Speaker 8: Is the process different between trying to ease that pain
- 21:52Speaker 8: and making it more comfortable for that player than it is?
- 21:55Speaker 2: That's something more.
- 21:57Speaker 8: Something in a joint or structural like an injury with
- 22:01Speaker 8: the bone or something like is that treatment? Because I
- 22:04Speaker 8: remember having an ac joint and it was more like
- 22:06Speaker 8: cortzone light of cane type numb the pain, Like is
- 22:09Speaker 8: that the same with the muscle?
- 22:10Speaker 4: Can you just numb like that area? Like what's that treatment?
- 22:14Speaker 2: Like?
- 22:14Speaker 13: Yeah, that's all relative. So it depends on where's the muscle,
- 22:16Speaker 13: what is the injury. If if we feel comfortable that
- 22:19Speaker 13: whatever the injury is, that you can play with seid
- 22:21Speaker 13: injury and not really jeopardize your overall health in your future.
- 22:25Speaker 13: If it's an ac joint, sure, if it's something that
- 22:27Speaker 13: we can, you know, give you medicine for, it's not
- 22:30Speaker 13: gonna affect your cognition. So we're not gonna give you
- 22:32Speaker 13: like a pain killer. We're not gonna give you a narcotic.
- 22:33Speaker 13: But we might say, yeah, I take some ivprof and
- 22:35Speaker 13: we might even do a little light of cane in
- 22:36Speaker 13: some areas where we can numb something up, as long
- 22:38Speaker 13: as we feel very safe about it, and even that
- 22:39Speaker 13: we talked to the athlete, we make sure we're all
- 22:41Speaker 13: on the same page. But yeah, there are times when
- 22:43Speaker 13: it is pain, and there are certain muscle injuries where
- 22:45Speaker 13: that is the case. How severe was the injury, where's
- 22:47Speaker 13: the injury located? But if it's a big tear. If
- 22:50Speaker 13: it's something that's gonna, like again put you at risk,
- 22:52Speaker 13: well then we're not comfortable crossing that line.
- 22:55Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:55Speaker 6: So a lot of talk recently and we actually talked
- 22:58Speaker 6: about it last week high ankle springs, and there's a
- 23:01Speaker 6: lot of different ankle sprains. When you hear like high
- 23:04Speaker 6: ankle sprain, there I say, yeah, why is the high
- 23:07Speaker 6: ankle sprain different than a normal ankle sprain.
- 23:10Speaker 13: So yeah, when we have ankle sprains, we break them down. Really,
- 23:12Speaker 13: there's three areas in the ankle kin sprain. There's a
- 23:14Speaker 13: lateral ankle, which is the outside of the ankle, which
- 23:16Speaker 13: is the most common. There's the media ankle, which is
- 23:18Speaker 13: the inside of the ankle, and then there's the high ankle.
- 23:21Speaker 13: A high ankle sprain is when you have an injury
- 23:23Speaker 13: of the ligaments that basically attach the lower shin bones,
- 23:25Speaker 13: so it's right above the ankle hents high ankle. So
- 23:28Speaker 13: the tibia and the fibulary are the two long bones
- 23:30Speaker 13: below the knee that go down to the ankle and
- 23:31Speaker 13: they form the ankle joint, at least the top portion
- 23:34Speaker 13: of it. Well, there are some ligaments to hold those
- 23:36Speaker 13: together and if you have a high ankle sprain, it's
- 23:38Speaker 13: going to be a sprain to one of those ligaments,
- 23:40Speaker 13: and sometimes multiple of those ligaments. So the problem is
- 23:43Speaker 13: that's a much more high stress area. The way I
- 23:45Speaker 13: think of it is is if you think of the foot,
- 23:48Speaker 13: the top of the foot, which is the tallus, is
- 23:49Speaker 13: almost like a wedge that pushes up into those two bones.
- 23:52Speaker 13: And so it's I think about splitting firewood. You use
- 23:54Speaker 13: a wedge to split firewood. If if y'all ever done
- 23:57Speaker 13: that out there, and it's and that's kind of what's
- 23:59Speaker 13: happened when you have that. You already have a partial
- 24:01Speaker 13: strain of those ligaments, and if you're pushing that wedge
- 24:04Speaker 13: up into them, it's just a much higher risk injury.
- 24:07Speaker 13: It's one that takes longer to heal.
- 24:08Speaker 8: You know.
- 24:09Speaker 13: The reason we all kind of grown is in general
- 24:11Speaker 13: it's a longer healing process than the others. Now, like
- 24:14Speaker 13: everything else, that the theme that comes up a lot
- 24:16Speaker 13: of severity.
- 24:17Speaker 2: How severe is it? Is it a mild, is it
- 24:18Speaker 2: a moderate? Is it severe?
- 24:19Speaker 13: Because sometimes if it's severe, we'll even talk surgery. We
- 24:22Speaker 13: talked about the tight ropes and the different procedures. You know,
- 24:25Speaker 13: those are things that we sometimes do, and it comes
- 24:27Speaker 13: down to that same discussion where it's kind of a
- 24:29Speaker 13: shared decision. We look at the exams, but we also
- 24:32Speaker 13: really look at the physical exam in addition to the MRI.
- 24:36Speaker 13: So we have the MRI, we have the imaging, but
- 24:37Speaker 13: then we say, well, look what can you do?
- 24:39Speaker 4: And is it a strength? Is it cutting? Is it
- 24:43Speaker 4: like bursts?
- 24:44Speaker 2: Like?
- 24:44Speaker 4: Is it all the above?
- 24:45Speaker 2: All the above?
- 24:45Speaker 13: And honestly, it starts with something as simple as can
- 24:47Speaker 13: you raise up on your foot? That's husually the first
- 24:49Speaker 13: thing that you want to see. You know, it sounds very,
- 24:51Speaker 13: very very elementary, but if a guy can raise up
- 24:54Speaker 13: on his toes, most of times, it's not a really
- 24:56Speaker 13: bad high ink, right, and we'll see that's probably the
- 24:58Speaker 13: first big test I want to see before we even
- 25:00Speaker 13: talk about any of the others.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Can you just raise up?
- 25:02Speaker 13: And if you can't do that, I'm probably not gonna
- 25:04Speaker 13: be that comfortable with putting you anywhere near a field.
- 25:06Speaker 13: But if you can, then we moved to the can
- 25:08Speaker 13: you push off? Can you come out of the stands?
- 25:09Speaker 13: Can you sprint? Can you cut? And if you can
- 25:12Speaker 13: do all those things, you know, especially maybe brace you up,
- 25:14Speaker 13: we give a little extra support to the ankle and
- 25:15Speaker 13: do those things. Then then yeah, that's a guy that
- 25:17Speaker 13: will usually play. And if you can't, well we got
- 25:20Speaker 13: to see that.
- 25:20Speaker 8: Dot talk about the different grades and how y'all judge
- 25:24Speaker 8: the severity of a hin ankle, because I remember I
- 25:26Speaker 8: had a high ankle sprain from the Virginia Tech which
- 25:29Speaker 8: is the second game of the year, and O seven
- 25:30Speaker 8: that the entire season is something I fought through. I
- 25:32Speaker 8: played with offensive line, right, Yeah, and then relax, everybody,
- 25:37Speaker 8: They're strong, they're not fat, They're just big. It was
- 25:43Speaker 8: actually explained to me the actually had a crack in
- 25:45Speaker 8: one of the like I can't remember for the fiby
- 25:47Speaker 8: or the tibia, but like a high ankle spray sometimes
- 25:49Speaker 8: is as a fracture of one of the bones. So
- 25:53Speaker 8: is that part of the judge just talk talk about
- 25:55Speaker 8: the grades?
- 25:56Speaker 13: Yeah, so well, typically with grades, you know, it's kind
- 25:58Speaker 13: of usually a mild, modern severe, or a one two
- 26:01Speaker 13: three in that order. Sometimes you know, you'll hear other
- 26:04Speaker 13: injuries where you add some other grading, but most injuries
- 26:07Speaker 13: that's kind of how we break it down. And with
- 26:09Speaker 13: the high ankle, a mild would be more of just
- 26:11Speaker 13: kind of a stretch and irritation, probably only involving one
- 26:14Speaker 13: or two of the ligaments. When you get more into
- 26:15Speaker 13: the moderate, there's probably some partial tearing with those injuries.
- 26:19Speaker 13: Usually it's gonna be more than one of those ligaments.
- 26:21Speaker 13: And then a severe is usually going to be a
- 26:22Speaker 13: complete tear where you even have some instability. Usually you're
- 26:24Speaker 13: gonna see some widening of the gap between those two bones.
- 26:27Speaker 13: Those are the ones who are almost always gonna fix.
- 26:30Speaker 13: And then yes, sometimes there is a fracture component of
- 26:32Speaker 13: all with it. You know, just because you have a
- 26:34Speaker 13: sprain or strain doesn't mean you don't have a fracture
- 26:36Speaker 13: and vice versa.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so we look at all of that.
- 26:38Speaker 13: If it's a very unstable injury with the fracture with
- 26:41Speaker 13: a lot of tearing, you know, that's that's something we
- 26:43Speaker 13: probably fix. If it's a smaller injury, if we feel
- 26:46Speaker 13: like we can stabilize it, if we feel like you
- 26:48Speaker 13: can do the things you have to do, if we
- 26:49Speaker 13: can see that from you, then then that's one that
- 26:51Speaker 13: again we'll get.
- 26:52Speaker 2: You out there and we'll work with it.
- 26:54Speaker 13: To your point, it's something that probably is not gonna heal,
- 26:57Speaker 13: you know, throughout the year This is usually even the
- 26:59Speaker 13: mild ones, you're probably still gonna feel it. I mean,
- 27:01Speaker 13: even week one, you get to the end of the year,
- 27:03Speaker 13: if we are playing on it, you're still gonna feel.
- 27:05Speaker 13: It's gonna get better, but you're still gonna feel it's
- 27:07Speaker 13: not gonna go away really until we let it heel.
- 27:09Speaker 8: Yeah, they there there. Did you have one high ankle sprain?
- 27:13Speaker 8: No fast, They're brutal, man. They like if I just
- 27:17Speaker 8: remember feeling unstable and every time I pushed off, it
- 27:20Speaker 8: just hurt.
- 27:20Speaker 2: It just hurt.
- 27:21Speaker 8: Really, I mean it was it was like it there's
- 27:23Speaker 8: a different pain than I'd ever felt.
- 27:25Speaker 2: The in the stability part was.
- 27:27Speaker 6: Yeah, all my injuries were knee related for the most part.
- 27:30Speaker 6: It's like how many times you get a helmet to
- 27:32Speaker 6: the knee and it goes the other way. It's like, oh,
- 27:34Speaker 6: you got a spray. It's like, okay, what does a
- 27:35Speaker 6: knee sprain? I don't really know what that means.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Yeah, like it feels like there's nothing in there right now.
- 27:40Speaker 8: Just feels terrible. It just feels like it feels I
- 27:41Speaker 8: don't know, dog, it feels worse than a sprain. Do
- 27:44Speaker 8: you want to check it again?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Uh? So?
- 27:46Speaker 8: It's great, like the meniscus. Are we going up in
- 27:49Speaker 8: the numbers. So grade one's mild or grade one is
- 27:51Speaker 8: like severe.
- 27:52Speaker 13: So that's common situation, right, So the smaller the number
- 27:54Speaker 13: of the the less severe.
- 27:56Speaker 2: All right, so grade one is mind like.
- 27:58Speaker 8: My right ankle, I still have a pocket of swim
- 28:00Speaker 8: only on top of my ankle.
- 28:01Speaker 2: From that injury.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Hey, you can get the exam later, but I check
- 28:04Speaker 4: it out with the clinic.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Okay, I got this spot.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Well, I mean okay, is that the same for everything?
- 28:12Speaker 6: So like we're talking about high ankle sprain, Like I've
- 28:15Speaker 6: talked about knee sprains. I certainly had plenty of those
- 28:17Speaker 6: where I'd get a helmet on it and be like, okay,
- 28:19Speaker 6: well is that tormniscus because I know what that feels like.
- 28:22Speaker 6: Sure feels like the No, it's just a knee sprain.
- 28:24Speaker 6: So like severity situation same in.
- 28:26Speaker 13: The knee tip typically it is. Yes, you know, there's
- 28:28Speaker 13: every joint's gonna be a little bit different. Everything's gonna
- 28:30Speaker 13: be a little different. But again, I think the first
- 28:32Speaker 13: thing we talk about with any injuries house severe. So
- 28:34Speaker 13: you know if you have you have a knee sprain, well,
- 28:36Speaker 13: which ligament. Is it that does back if we're talking
- 28:38Speaker 13: about one ligament versus another. And then then we start
- 28:41Speaker 13: talking severity. Is it a mild injury?
- 28:43Speaker 9: Is it?
- 28:43Speaker 2: Is it moderate? Is it severe?
- 28:45Speaker 13: And and sometimes you know, even if it's pretty snick
- 28:47Speaker 13: in injury, it may not be surgical. Other times and
- 28:49Speaker 13: more mild, you know, a small tear in the meniscus
- 28:51Speaker 13: is probably something we're gonna have to address, right, So
- 28:54Speaker 13: it's it's all kind of relative.
- 28:57Speaker 4: I uh, yeahsh I don't even know if I have
- 28:59Speaker 4: any meniscus.
- 28:59Speaker 8: Like, yeah, what is O about it? Had felt the
- 29:03Speaker 8: niska yea? Had the old microfracture surgery? Cand you explain?
- 29:06Speaker 6: Can you explain that one to our listeners, because that's
- 29:08Speaker 6: try to explain it sometimes and I don't think I
- 29:10Speaker 6: do a good job.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Yeah, So so microfracture.
- 29:13Speaker 13: So there's basically when we talk about the knee, you
- 29:15Speaker 13: have the condril cartilage, which is the cartilage that covers
- 29:18Speaker 13: the bone. So and each the two bones that form
- 29:19Speaker 13: the knee, the tibia and the femur, there's some cartilage
- 29:22Speaker 13: that covers those bones that's condril cartilage. And when you
- 29:24Speaker 13: get a defect in that, that typically doesn't heal that well.
- 29:27Speaker 13: So if you get a little divid or a pop
- 29:29Speaker 13: mark or something like that, you're gonna have to do
- 29:30Speaker 13: something with it. Usually now, all things relative, the body
- 29:33Speaker 13: can compensate, but if if we're going to try and
- 29:35Speaker 13: do something with it, you know, one of the procedures
- 29:38Speaker 13: that that's been commonly done is a microfracture, where we
- 29:40Speaker 13: literally drilled little abd holes into the bone under it.
- 29:43Speaker 13: And what you're hoping by doing that is that you
- 29:45Speaker 13: stimulate the body. You maybe even get in the bone
- 29:47Speaker 13: marrow a little bit, You release some of the bone
- 29:49Speaker 13: marre of some of the stem cells, some of there
- 29:50Speaker 13: are things that help heal recover, and the hope is
- 29:52Speaker 13: that some of that cartilage heals. It's not a perfect fix, yeah,
- 29:55Speaker 13: and that's one thing that we're still fall a little
- 29:57Speaker 13: bit short of, is the perfect fix for cartilage injuries.
- 29:59Speaker 2: That's why they can be a real bear.
- 30:01Speaker 13: But if you make what's there a little bit healthier,
- 30:03Speaker 13: if you can make it a little bit thicker, if
- 30:04Speaker 13: you can get some degree of recovery there, well that's
- 30:06Speaker 13: better than nothing. And that's kind of the idea with
- 30:08Speaker 13: the microfracture.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that was fun. It's fun to come back from.
- 30:12Speaker 4: I didn't know the rehab was going to be quite
- 30:14Speaker 4: what it was.
- 30:14Speaker 6: Off of that, I was thinking, Oh, it's going to
- 30:16Speaker 6: be a miniscus and I've had a meniscus surgery.
- 30:18Speaker 4: Em played like eight days later. It's gonna be fine.
- 30:20Speaker 4: It was not that.
- 30:21Speaker 13: It's a little different, well, in part because you gotta
- 30:23Speaker 13: let it heal. You know, you're you're you're drilling those
- 30:24Speaker 13: little bit holes. You gotta let it try to heal.
- 30:26Speaker 13: At least that's gonna do that. They don't always.
- 30:29Speaker 2: They didn't do that. Didn't do that.
- 30:31Speaker 6: All right there, doctor stephn Ather, it's good enough to
- 30:33Speaker 6: join us every single week here on OTB break down
- 30:35Speaker 6: some of the injuries across the sports world.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Doc, we appreciate it as always, sir, Oh, it's my pleasure.
- 30:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:41Speaker 4: We'll take a break more OTB when we come back.
- 30:43Speaker 1: On the other side, off the bench, from players to legends,
- 31:05Speaker 1: Hester and Flynn breakdown L s U football like only
- 31:08Speaker 1: champions can.
- 31:23Speaker 9: On the perfect day. I know that I can't go.
- 31:33Speaker 9: That's not possible.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Are you laughing at him?
- 31:39Speaker 2: There? Uh, chat.
- 31:45Speaker 8: Man, I can't believe that were getting I was trying
- 31:48Speaker 8: to get a free examine here.
- 31:50Speaker 6: Do you want to throw your ankle up on the
- 31:54Speaker 6: I'm trying to avoid those code pays, my god, Like, hey.
- 31:57Speaker 2: So like, got doc in here. I want to get
- 31:59Speaker 2: a little check, just like.
- 32:01Speaker 6: If you sprain your ankle in two thousand and seven,
- 32:04Speaker 6: eighteen years ago, and you should have got a little
- 32:06Speaker 6: pocket of fluid there.
- 32:08Speaker 4: I'm just saying.
- 32:09Speaker 8: I was just making mention of it because I always
- 32:11Speaker 8: think it's hypothetically I got two injuries that like, I
- 32:15Speaker 8: still have things from it. It's like a gift from
- 32:16Speaker 8: the football gods. I take pride in that little pocket.
- 32:19Speaker 8: And song I was trying to brag.
- 32:20Speaker 3: You also did ask if you had two to warn labrams.
- 32:24Speaker 8: Yeah, true, trying to get that I might push ups today.
- 32:28Speaker 8: He might send you a bill, he might send me bo.
- 32:31Speaker 2: He got an opportunity to avoid some capes. You're gonna
- 32:34Speaker 2: take advantage of it.
- 32:34Speaker 5: No, I think we should take turns. Like every week
- 32:36Speaker 5: he comes in, we each ask him about an issue
- 32:39Speaker 5: we have.
- 32:39Speaker 8: Yep, Doc, I got this new mole, so should I.
- 32:46Speaker 4: It's not a dermatologist, sure, he's an orthopedic.
- 32:48Speaker 2: This is a side of.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Aging or is just like a problem like whatever, I
- 32:52Speaker 3: don't hear that right, you know.
- 32:53Speaker 5: So this screw in my head? Uh huh am, I
- 32:55Speaker 5: gonna have to get it replaced at some point.
- 32:58Speaker 2: We should on air checkups.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Not screwing my head, but I feel like it's a
- 33:01Speaker 3: little rusty. What are your thoughts.
- 33:05Speaker 6: I do find it fascinating, like all the different grades
- 33:08Speaker 6: of sprains and stuff, because I don't know, like when
- 33:11Speaker 6: I hear sprain, I'm like, Okay, well that means I'm playing.
- 33:14Speaker 4: That means I'm good. But not every positions the same
- 33:18Speaker 4: to you know what I mean?
- 33:19Speaker 6: And I never had I said, I never had a
- 33:20Speaker 6: high ankle, and I've always heard like if you have
- 33:23Speaker 6: a sprain, that's the worst one that you can have,
- 33:25Speaker 6: and all jokes is like you've been through that. You
- 33:27Speaker 6: had giant ankle braces. Giant, I mean you really did,
- 33:32Speaker 6: Like you had those big.
- 33:32Speaker 8: One side of them was pretty narrow because my ankles
- 33:34Speaker 8: are very shapely, but the outside was thickum.
- 33:40Speaker 4: But seriously, like what I don't I've never been do that.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I had knees sprains.
- 33:44Speaker 6: But it's like, hey, sorry, Bud, go out, Like I
- 33:49Speaker 6: don't really know about that.
- 33:51Speaker 8: It's kind of like what we talked about the other
- 33:53Speaker 8: couple of weeks ago turf Town, like that doesn't sound
- 33:55Speaker 8: bad either.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 8: Yeah, all sprains are not created equal, that's for sure.
- 33:59Speaker 8: That when I had that high ankle, but give me
- 34:02Speaker 8: two three tight ripes.
- 34:04Speaker 6: I mean it was Middle Tennessee that you missed, right,
- 34:06Speaker 6: you know, seven and then you came back. You sitting
- 34:08Speaker 6: in South Carolina.
- 34:09Speaker 8: But if you remember, like part of our offense was
- 34:11Speaker 8: me running a decent you ran. You had one hundred
- 34:14Speaker 8: attempts that year. Yeah, and it was like it was
- 34:19Speaker 8: with the big old ankle brace and literally offensive lineman
- 34:21Speaker 8: shoes for multiple games.
- 34:23Speaker 6: When you say offensive lineman shoes. Yeah, you had Timberland
- 34:27Speaker 6: zone out there, basically the.
- 34:28Speaker 8: Old shark bottoms, not the fat kids, the two for
- 34:40Speaker 8: ones that academy. For sure, did you go did you
- 34:44Speaker 8: have to go like to the the local I'm going
- 34:47Speaker 8: to try to pull it up local sporting store to
- 34:49Speaker 8: go get some peewee footboxes, the shark bottoms, that's the
- 34:53Speaker 8: only one that that big brace that they had, which
- 34:56Speaker 8: at that time was like state of the art technology
- 34:59Speaker 8: that was brace wise. I remember Maricchi had found that brace.
- 35:02Speaker 8: I'm got making these braces and only a couple people
- 35:05Speaker 8: had had it.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And.
- 35:09Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know what a state of art
- 35:10Speaker 8: about it. It just looked like a piece of plastic. Yeah,
- 35:13Speaker 8: it's brutal.
- 35:15Speaker 6: So look Elise, she's gonna through some injuries, had some
- 35:18Speaker 6: against Louisiana attack. Not quite sure, but oh my god,
- 35:24Speaker 6: those shoes are Wow, you're wearing work bootsing out there.
