- 0:02Welcome to Mommy Would, the podcast where motherhood meets
- 0:06Hollywood. Real moms, real talk, no
- 0:09scripts. I'm your host, Emily Bolt, and
- 0:12we are talking about the messy, funny and unfiltered side of
- 0:16being a mom in the entertainment industry.
- 0:19On this episode of Mommy Would, I am talking to a dear friend,
- 0:24Rob Benedict. Now this episode is a recutting
- 0:28of a previous conversation we've already had, but of.
- 0:30Course it hits. Differently listening back to it
- 0:33now and this is more of a highlights reel of our previous
- 0:37conversation. This is so full.
- 0:41Circle for me because I'm sitting down with Rob, who's an
- 0:44actor, a writer, a musician, but before this conversation.
- 0:48I was his kids. Nanny I got a front row seat to
- 0:52see what it was actually like to build a career in this industry
- 0:57while raising his family. We.
- 1:00Have been so close for so many years now.
- 1:02Of course, years later I'm a mom myself.
- 1:05Rob started again with a brand new baby at 53.
- 1:10We talk about what's. Changed what hasn't and what no
- 1:14one tells you about trying to make it all work.
- 1:16This conversation is about identity, timing, support, and
- 1:19the reality of having it all. Let's get into it.
- 1:23You're going to love this recut. This is so exciting for me.
- 1:30I feel like this is such AI don't know what the term is.
- 1:37I was going to say colliding of worlds but that's not right.
- 1:41A turning of tables. That's not right.
- 1:43Tables a little bit, but yeah. So you and I have known each
- 1:48other longer than I've known my husband.
- 1:53That's. Right.
- 1:54Preston I. Was there?
- 1:57I know it's so wild. We've known each other that
- 2:02long. So.
- 2:06So I know the names and ages of your children, but will you
- 2:09share the names and ages of your children?
- 2:12So I've got Calvin is 20. I'm going to throw up.
- 2:17And Audrey turns 17 next weekend.
- 2:21And then I have Margaret, who is a six week old.
- 2:27Oh my God. So just a little back story.
- 2:32The reason we know each other for a bajillion years is because
- 2:37I nanied Audrey and Calvin, which makes me want to die that
- 2:43no, I'm like, how are they that old?
- 2:49And I feel because I was like, oh, I guess I met them when I
- 2:53was 25. And I'm like, how was I-25 at
- 2:58one point? I mean, I'm sure as their
- 3:01parent, you feel the same where you're like, how did they get so
- 3:03old? And I like, really haven't aged
- 3:05that much. I know.
- 3:07And I don't feel the age that I am.
- 3:08And yeah. And they, they're taller than
- 3:11me. They're like, they're adults.
- 3:14They're very much adults. And you knew them when they were
- 3:17kids, you know, And like, something definitely happens.
- 3:20Like kids turn into adults, you know, they, they they go through
- 3:23puberty and they wind up on the other side.
- 3:25And you're having real conversations with them and
- 3:27you're like, oh, my God. Like, and you, you miss it.
- 3:29You really miss the little kid you got.
- 3:31You got to see them. Like you got to spend time with
- 3:33them when they really were at that Primo Stadium.
- 3:36I think I I started watching them when they were like 5:00
- 3:40and 8:00. That's amazing.
- 3:43Yeah, it must have been yeah, cuz Audrey was that was when she
- 3:46was still in her pink Princess face.
- 3:49Oh my God. And it's funny because I really
- 3:53saw Calvin through most of the gambit cuz I think until cuz I
- 4:00was bringing it like I'm being just like drop off and pick up
- 4:03for high school though. So like I've seen him like, but
- 4:07I really missed like that whole cause of COVID.
- 4:11I really missed the whole chunk of Audrey and so much of me is
- 4:15like, Audrey, what are you doing?
- 4:17Should we go have lunch? Totally.
- 4:20And part of me is like, is that weird?
- 4:24But I'm like, you were such a huge, I mean, we were such a
- 4:28huge part of. Each other.
- 4:31So long because I mean going back well it's funny because
- 4:37wanting to ask you so many questions about like how you
- 4:41guys made it work 10 and obviously I'm kind of like well
- 4:46I guess I was I guess it was all me so you're.
- 4:54Welcome. I mean, you know, and we had a,
- 4:56we have a unique, we had a unique setup, not as unique in,
- 5:00in Hollywood, but you know, I'm an actor and, and my wife was a
- 5:05lawyer. I say it was 'cause we divorced,
- 5:08but you know that. And so I was home.
- 5:12So you and I spent a lot of time together because you know, I'm
- 5:15home a lot. As with the actor schedule, like
- 5:17you never quite know I was either out in the country or
- 5:20right I was home. Yeah, it was either you're here
- 5:24or not. Like exactly.
- 5:26Exactly. Kind of wild.
- 5:27Yeah, but. But I'm, oh, go ahead.
- 5:31Spent a lot of time together because of that, you know, for
- 5:33that reason. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:37Which was so cool. I mean, really like an
- 5:42inspiration to me to be like he's doing it.
- 5:46He has kids, they have, you know, this and like making it
- 5:52work and obviously having help. And you had, I forget the nanny
- 6:00before me, but Norma, yes, Norma when they were little little.
- 6:08So so obviously help is a huge factor.
- 6:15But before so, so let's go way back before you moved out here,
- 6:23or like when you were moving out here because 'cause you were
- 6:28pretty young. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:30Out here early. Yeah, so I graduated college and
- 6:35came came out with with Molly, my who's my girlfriend at the
- 6:38time. And but we were like in a set up
- 6:40shop and yeah, out for, you know, we and we came from the
- 6:44Midwest and I'm from Missouri like you are.
- 6:47And she was from Illinois and went to College in Chicago and
- 6:52graduated and, like, loaded up the car and came out here 2 two
- 6:56cars. Yeah.
- 6:57Yeah. And so.
- 6:59Yeah. And then we could, we got
- 7:00married super young. I I was, I was 24, she was 23.
- 7:05Wow. Yeah.
- 7:06My mom, we, I was just talking to my mom in the car about
- 7:10'cause we were talking about how you know, that Audrey and Calvin
- 7:13are older now and like that I was 25 and I and she said that
- 7:16she got married at 23 and I was like, what?
- 7:20Wow, you're a different. Yeah.
- 7:23Human but so moving out, obviously you were coming out
- 7:28for acting and I feel like you were lucky and you know
- 7:35obviously hard work and talent, but that you worked pretty
- 7:41quickly. But how did that look?
- 7:43What was that like being like, OK.
- 7:46And it's always interesting hearing, I guess, from a male
- 7:50perspective of being in the industry and wanting a family.
- 7:57Yeah, you know, it was a challenge and Molly was also
- 8:01very career driven and. Yeah, she was gone about as much
- 8:05as you if. Not yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:08And she, you know, Monday through Friday, she was, you
- 8:11know, she was going to be out the door at 7 and at home at
- 8:137:00 at night. But so she went to law school.
- 8:17She applied to law schools in Chicago and in LA because LA is
- 8:21where I wanted to go. And she got into UCLA and so
- 8:25that's where she went to law school.
- 8:26And yeah, so we were always sort of both of us are pretty driven.
- 8:30And but I always, I don't know, I just in my mind, like I just
- 8:34always wanted a family. I wanted a family.
- 8:36I wanted. I knew I was going to marry
- 8:38Molly. I knew it was this is going to
- 8:39be what my life was. And so, but at the same time, we
- 8:45were all we were both very career driven.
- 8:48So it was like in her mind, she didn't want to even talk about
- 8:52kids until we were in our 30s. And I was the one who sort of
- 8:56like, yeah, I would, I would bring give tours of whatever,
- 9:00wherever we lived. I was like, this is this will be
- 9:02the baby room, you know? And she didn't like that.
- 9:05She didn't like me even saying that.
- 9:06She was like, you know, so. Interesting.
- 9:10But so, yeah, so you know, we were, we started to to work and,
- 9:17and I think once we felt a little more on our feet, which
- 9:20was about 10 years later after we married, if we in our early
- 9:2530s, we're like we, you know, we finally bought a house and we're
- 9:29like, all right, let's, let's do it.
- 9:32I remember at the moment, you know, I was always the one who
- 9:35was like, and this is the kids room, you know, whatever.
- 9:37And she was like, don't I don't, I don't, that's not funny to me.
- 9:39And and then she finally was like, she was like, OK, I'm
- 9:42ready. And I was like, OK, whoa, whoa,
- 9:44whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's I was the one who was
- 9:47like, when it really came to it, I was like, OK, hold on, hold
- 9:50on. Let's talk about this.
- 9:52Because at, at the time I was working a lot and I and I was
- 9:54like, how, how is this going to work?
- 9:56I mean, it really was a, it was a challenge just even
- 10:00considering how because I was worried as the, as the person
- 10:04who's who doesn't have like a steady gig.
- 10:07I know what this year's going to be that I would be have to sort
- 10:11of stop what I was doing and, you know, be a full time dad
- 10:15and, and not be able to work anymore.
- 10:18And that was my fear. Yeah, well, and that's kind of
- 10:21why I started Mommy would because I was like, I in the
- 10:26same position where it's like, OK, well Preston and I are both
- 10:29in it, but being like, OK, yeah, how is this going to work if I
- 10:34don't want to stop and like what's going to happen?
- 10:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, and that was part of the,
- 10:42you know, reason we we ended up getting Norma and then you.
- 10:46I mean, we, I wanted the flexibility to be able to
- 10:50because as an actor, it's, it's really difficult.
- 10:52You you, you know, like you never know what yours going to
- 10:55be, but you have to be ready. But the what what you don't plan
- 10:59on is you actually kind of want to stay home.
- 11:02That was the other part of it. You know, you actually, you
- 11:04don't. You don't factor in the love
- 11:06that you have to, you know. You know, yeah, beforehand.
- 11:12Right before you have the kid, you're always like, you're like,
- 11:14OK, well, I remember her and I again, we were young, but we're
- 11:17like 30, early 30s. But we're like, you know, this
- 11:20baby's not going to change our life.
- 11:21It's this is our house, damn it. You know, yeah, we're like,
- 11:26they're not paying rent, they'll live around me.
- 11:30Exactly. And then cut to your like
- 11:32cleaning up vomit like whatever you need.
- 11:36Anything Well, it's so funny because I, I mean, my listeners,
- 11:41I'm sure have heard me say it a million times that, that it's so
- 11:47much. So I did not expect it to be so
- 11:51different from nannying. Like, obviously parts of it are
- 11:55very similar, like the day-to-day.
- 11:58Stuff. But the like common sense stuff
- 12:03that I would have like with Audra and Calvin where it's
- 12:07like, you know, I don't know. I mean, they were older by the
- 12:10time I was with them. But like for babies, were you
- 12:13like they'll eat when they're hungry and like they'll stop and
- 12:16like I'll put them down for an like, I feel like it was so much
- 12:20easier to say like no to stuff and then they would be like, OK,
- 12:26I mean, you also have great children.
- 12:28So they were. Well, you're.
- 12:31Right. They were older, but yeah, yeah,
- 12:32yeah. Yeah, but like saying no to
- 12:37things and being like, you know, parents just really need to
- 12:39stick to their guns. About them totally.
- 12:43Totally. And now I'm like don't smile at
- 12:46me because I will cave so easily.
- 12:49Yeah. And the part of it, the child
- 12:51knows that too. Like, you know, the the
- 12:53phenomenon of like as the parent, you get a different kid
- 12:58than other people get, right. Yeah.
- 13:00At least that, that, that you know, they say like, like either
- 13:04like Angel at school, devil at home, you know, or the other way
- 13:08around. And but you'd rather have Angel
- 13:10at school or Angel with the nanny and then the devil when
- 13:12you're around. And like, I think it's, that's
- 13:14what my kids words like sometimes when we would come
- 13:17home from work or whatever that they, they're bad moods for that
- 13:20moment, you know, because. Really worked out for me.
- 13:26So I'm like, they are the, I mean, they are great.
- 13:29They're good kids. They're just such good kids.
- 13:32So now, I mean now, wow, you get to start.
- 13:38No man, I know I was nearly an empty nester.
- 13:41But going to Calvin and like us, Preston and I kind of being a
- 13:46part of your story. So much of this episode is just
- 13:51going to be like memory lane. But, but I remember when I first
- 13:56started dating Preston, we had like our first like date.
- 14:01And I'm sure I told Calvin like, oh, I'm going on a date tonight
- 14:04or whatever. I don't know.
- 14:05And so, but he like right off the bat was like, are you going
- 14:11to marry him? Are you guys getting married?
- 14:14And I was like, Calvin, will you calm down?
- 14:17And he's 8. Yeah, and that's so Calvin.
- 14:21Are you going? And he's like, well, me and my
- 14:23girlfriend are probably getting here.
- 14:26No, But he was like, are you guys getting married?
- 14:28And I was like, I don't know. And, and then he was like, well,
- 14:37are you, are you going to have a baby?
- 14:39And he's like, well, I want you to have a baby so I can see what
- 14:43you look like pregnant. And then and I was like Calvin.
- 14:47And then he was like, well, your sister's pregnant, Your sister's
- 14:51having married and having a baby.
- 14:53And I was like, she's two years older than me.
- 14:55And he goes, OK, well, two years ago he was like doing the math
- 14:59and I was like, well, two years ago she got married and now
- 15:02she's having a baby. So you should get married soon.
- 15:03And then in two years, you'll have a baby.
- 15:06Oh my God, that's so him. I mean like the.
- 15:08Pressure is on. So funny.
- 15:13Is that actually like one of the first times Preston came over?
- 15:18We're like playing sorry or something.
- 15:22I was helping Audrey or going to the bathroom or something.
- 15:25He's like, have you guys kissed? Have you kissed him?
- 15:29And he is like, I'm trying, man. And I was like, Preston is the
- 15:33best answer ever. He's got lots of funny, like,
- 15:38conversations he had with Preston that he still remembers.
- 15:41And he's like, yeah, I remember Preppers Preston.
- 15:43I were talking about like a movie that Preston didn't like,
- 15:45that he didn't understand why Preston did like that kind of
- 15:48thing, like. It would always get into the.
- 15:50Yeah, Calvin and, and he just, he doesn't forget a thing and
- 15:53he'll remember exactly where they were and.
- 15:56Or when Calvin went, they went through the phase where anytime
- 16:00Preston came they would like make a movie.
- 16:03Right, right, right, right. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:05Yeah, I like I remember the Home alone.
- 16:07Yes, yes. How did this how did your
- 16:13decision to have another one differ from because obviously
- 16:20now you're with Ruth and have a new So was it just I mean, I
- 16:25don't wanna. No, no, no, I understand what.
- 16:28You're saying like, how was the decision different because now
- 16:30you're also with another performer and obviously you both
- 16:34are very successful and not the same as when you're like 20
- 16:40coming out here, right? Yeah, no, it's, it was a
- 16:43completely different kind of thing.
- 16:44I mean, with Calvin and Audrey, you know, like I said, we, Molly
- 16:49and I always kind of had a kind of a plan, you know, we and part
- 16:53of our plan was also like what we just assumed you did, you
- 16:58know what I mean? There was like, you get married,
- 17:01you buy a house, you have a child, you know what I mean?
- 17:03It was like this, these sort of life Marks and we always knew we
- 17:07would have a family and we got lucky.
- 17:09We had a boy and a girl, both healthy and you know what I
- 17:12mean? It was a perfect little family.
- 17:13And so it was different in the early, my early 30s, deciding to
- 17:19have children. It was just kind of like that's
- 17:21what you did. And you didn't just have one,
- 17:23you had two. And you know what I mean?
- 17:24That was the second of mine. And we're really blessed.
- 17:28Like it was, it's such, it was such a a great unit, family
- 17:32unit. And and so, you know, yeah.
- 17:37Fast forward, you know, Molly and I were married for 24 years
- 17:40and, and we're still really good friends and we all get along
- 17:45really well. And, and Molly has a new partner
- 17:48and, and, and, and then I and I have a new partner and, and
- 17:52Ruth, like I said, is a performer.
- 17:54But so Ruth had never had kids and, you know, she said she'd
- 17:59like to try. And I was like, you know, I love
- 18:01her so much. I want her to at least feel like
- 18:04she tried, you know what I mean? And not like go under 50s and go
- 18:08like, I wish I would have tried. I want, I wanted to at least
- 18:11have that. And it worked and it, and I was
- 18:16like, wow, OK, we're doing, it's happening.
- 18:19You know, we talked about it for a long time.
- 18:21It was more than it was more than just like it happened.
- 18:24You know, we talked about it and planned it and, you know, but I,
- 18:28I, to be honest, I, I didn't, I didn't think it would, you know,
- 18:31I didn't think it would work. And it, it was sort of this
- 18:35miracle child, you know, which puts a sort of a new flavor on
- 18:39it, you know? And yeah, it was so it was, it
- 18:43was actually completely different because the first
- 18:45time, like I said, we were, we're young.
- 18:47This is kind of what you do. We were the first of all my
- 18:49friends to have kids because like everyone, everyone was
- 18:52career driven. Everyone who comes out to LA is
- 18:54like that. Like for my Midwestern friends,
- 18:56I was old, having kids. But.
- 18:59But out. But here, out here it was.
- 19:02I was the first. So yeah.
- 19:05So it's completely different now.
- 19:07You know, we're kind of like it was, it's this new like, like I
- 19:14never would imagine that my life had gone would go the way that
- 19:17it ended up going, you know, And to be doing it again now in 53
- 19:21and to be, you know, a father again, it's wild, but but
- 19:27exciting, you know. So I guess that that's the major
- 19:29difference is like, I'm like, wow, I, I, I don't, I can't even
- 19:34predict any. Like this is crazy.
- 19:36You know what I mean? This is uncharted waters.
- 19:39And you know, and, you know, I have a 20 year old and a, a
- 19:42newborn. It's, you know, crazy.
- 19:44But you know, part of, like I said, the fact that it's sort of
- 19:47she's kind of a miracle. And then also and also to see
- 19:52Ruth so happy, you know, but also like Calvin and Audrey are
- 19:56super excited about it and. That's seeing pictures with
- 19:59them, with her. I was like, you guys, I cannot
- 20:02handle this. Yeah.
- 20:03It's crazy. Is it easy for the two of you?
- 20:10Is there any like resentment there?
- 20:14Not I feel like I'm using terrible wording, but like, you
- 20:18know, obviously, thankfully you both are like working but right
- 20:26there, because I'm trying to think from her perspective, was
- 20:29she like, yeah, fine, go. I mean, are you like obviously,
- 20:36I would assume you're supportive of each other because you are.
- 20:39Completely because you know, that that's the thing.
- 20:41I think there, there there might have been a little resentment in
- 20:45my previous relationship because, you know, her job was
- 20:50so steady and, and here, you know, and I'm a little bit like,
- 20:55you know, all over the place and like never quite, you know, and
- 21:00maybe sometimes when I had a job out of town, it was perceived
- 21:02that was just going to go party and it was not, you know what I
- 21:05mean? And maybe it's also a little bit
- 21:08our age now, but but no, it's, it's really there's no
- 21:12resentment. I mean, her first response when
- 21:14I got this job and like 4 weeks ago, she was like, Oh my God,
- 21:17that's amazing. And I'm the one going like,
- 21:19yeah, but how are we going to make it work?
- 21:21You know? So she was, I think as an actor,
- 21:25especially these days, because it's different than it used to
- 21:28be, you know, every time you get a job, it's like, yay, I'm
- 21:31awesome. You know, it's right.
- 21:33So, so yeah, so it was, it's, no, it was.
- 21:37Fortunately there's no resentment because that's a big
- 21:39deal. I think you don't want that in a
- 21:41relationship. It's because that that can
- 21:43create trouble. So no, that that's not there.
- 21:48It's just more the stress of like making it all work, just
- 21:50making like, how OK, how are we going to do it?
- 21:52But we knew going in that that was going to be a challenge.
- 21:55We knew, OK, you know, I tried to tell.
- 21:57I tried to tell her like it's, you know, it's not easy, you
- 22:01know? Yeah.
- 22:03But it's, you know, so we knew going in it was going to be a
- 22:05challenge, but yeah. My last question that I like to
- 22:09ask everyone is at the moment, what is your lifesaver?
- 22:15And I like I always say, I'm like, it can be a quote, it can
- 22:19be a baby product, it can be. Oh, I see.
- 22:22Yeah, it can be a person. No, it can be a person.
- 22:26I always say Preston. I'm always like I don't know
- 22:29what I. Would do, yeah.
- 22:31I mean, like, honestly, for me, it's, it's, you know, I mean,
- 22:34the, the people to me, it's honestly it's, it's my, my, my
- 22:41village, you know what I mean? It takes a village and it really
- 22:44is my village. I mean, my, my older children
- 22:47have been so great and, and, and Ruth is so amazing.
- 22:52And now this new baby. And then, you know, shout out to
- 22:55like my closest friends who've been so great during this time
- 22:58that such a crazy transitional time.
- 23:01I mean, having a baby for anybody at any age is, is a
- 23:04huge, huge, huge, huge thing that takes a minute, you know,
- 23:09to get, you know, I'm still right now I'm like, not even
- 23:11100%. Like I'm in the clouds a bit.
- 23:13And so having that village has really been a lifesaver.
- 23:17We, I've got like my best friend down the street, Hank and his
- 23:20wife Pam have been so great. You know, they've just, they've
- 23:24been the people that come by with soup and, you know, and you
- 23:28can be in a bad mood around and it doesn't matter, you know,
- 23:30people like that. It's no.
- 23:33I I bet it's nice to have people that are like that have most a
- 23:40lot of them been through it and have kids already because you
- 23:45don't know what you don't know because like friends of mine
- 23:49that have babies at 23, I was like, cool, see ya.
- 23:52I can't help. Like I'm looking back.
- 23:54I'm like now I'm like, oh, I know how I can help.
- 23:57And it's not to ask you how I can help.
- 23:59It's to like you said, just bring soup.
- 24:02Just. Yeah, and and.
- 24:06Make you delegate. Yeah.
- 24:08And so it's a big deal, you know, that different people have
- 24:11different reactions because of what's going on in their life or
- 24:13whatever it is, you know, but sometimes certain friends will
- 24:16just really step up and be like, hey, this is what you need right
- 24:19now. And it's it's a really a
- 24:20blessing to have that. So yeah, I would say my village
- 24:24has been my lifesaver for sure. Oh my God.
- 24:28OK, well I'm going to keep bugging you and texting you
- 24:34until I get to meet this baby in person.
