- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Everyday Eurasia podcast,
- 0:04Inspiring Faith for Every Day. Each day we are on a journey
- 0:08with Jesus in our churches, our homes, our workplaces, and in so
- 0:13many different places around the world.
- 0:16Is it beautiful that no matter where we are, we can walk with
- 0:20him every single day? Jesus is the one who connects us
- 0:24all and stands at the very center of our lives day after
- 0:28day. Through this podcast, you'll
- 0:30hear voices from across the region sharing devotionals that
- 0:34reminds us of God's presence in our everyday moments.
- 0:44This week, we'll be journeying together with Chet Gibbons.
- 0:47Chet serves as the Nesserin Discipleship International
- 0:50Coordinator for the Eurasia Region.
- 0:52As a missionary, he lives and serves alongside his wife
- 0:55Crystal from the regional office in Business, Germany.
- 0:59Today, Chet will be thinking with us about the new year that
- 1:02is in front of us. At the start of the new year,
- 1:05there's always a big temptation to start new things, make new
- 1:08promises. You say to yourself, this is the
- 1:11year when I'm finally going to do the things that I've been
- 1:14wanting to do. But before we add more things to
- 1:17our To Do List this year, even if they're good things, let's
- 1:21listen to the prophet Haggai. He was dealing with the same
- 1:24issue. There was utter destruction in
- 1:28Jerusalem. The people of God have been in
- 1:31exile. They've been returned back to
- 1:34their promised land and now they're rebuilding the city,
- 1:38rebuilding the temple. As the people are coming back.
- 1:42They have a lot of work to do and they have a big To Do List,
- 1:46and many of them have chosen to take care of other things before
- 1:50they're taking care of the things of God.
- 1:53And the prophet Haggai comes on the scene, and this is from
- 1:56chapter 1, verses 2 through 9. This is what the Lord of
- 2:01Heaven's armies says. The people are saying the time
- 2:06has not yet come to rebuild the House of the Lord.
- 2:11Then the Lord sent this message through the prophet Haggai.
- 2:15Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in
- 2:20ruins? This is what the Lord of
- 2:22Heaven's Army says. Look at what's happening to you.
- 2:26You have planted much, but harvest little.
- 2:29You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty.
- 2:34You put on clothes but cannot keep warm.
- 2:36Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets
- 2:40filled with holes. This is what the Lord of
- 2:44Heaven's Army says. Look at what's happening to you
- 2:48now. Go up into the hills, bring down
- 2:50timber and rebuild my house. Then I will take pleasure in it
- 2:56and be honored, says the Lord. You hoped for rich harvests, but
- 3:00they were poor, and when you brought your harvest home, I
- 3:03blew it away. Why?
- 3:05Because my house lies in ruins, says the Lord of Heaven's
- 3:09Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine
- 3:12houses. It's because of you that the
- 3:14heavens withhold the dew and the earth produces no crops.
- 3:18I have called for a drought on your fields and your hills, a
- 3:22drought to wither the grain and grapes and olive trees and all
- 3:26your other crops. A drought to starve you and your
- 3:28livestock and to ruin everything you have worked so hard to get.
- 3:35This is the word of the Lord. It sounds frighteningly familiar
- 3:39to me. I don't know if you felt that
- 3:41way, working really hard, but coming home with a little bit.
- 3:46We eat and eat, but we're never satisfied.
- 3:49We drink and we're still thirsty.
- 3:51We work and we feel like we're putting money into pockets with
- 3:54holes in them. It sounds very familiar to me.
- 3:57Why was all this happening? Well, the Israelites were
- 4:00ignoring the Temple and focusing on their own things, focusing on
- 4:04their own houses. Now, when we read the Old
- 4:06Testament, there's something we should always remember the the
- 4:09equivalent to the temple structure that we read about in
- 4:14the Old Testament. When we come to the New
- 4:16Testament, the equivalent of that structure is the body of
- 4:19Christ. It's the church, not the church
- 4:22building, but the church. It's you and I.
- 4:24We are the temple where God dwells, where his Spirit dwells
- 4:29now, and we have the same problem the Haggai was dealing
- 4:33with, that we have our own priorities instead of focusing
- 4:36on the things of God and the temple of our Lord.
- 4:39It's one of Satan's great strategies is to see the less
- 4:42important things of this world as the most important things.
- 4:46Like in Haggai's day, it's the same temptation for us to be
- 4:50busy, busy, busy with all the wrong things.
- 4:53And if we're not careful, we can go into this new year and the
- 4:57temptation is to add more things to our resolution list, more
- 5:02things to our To Do List. And we and it comes to church
- 5:05and when it comes to our spiritual lives, we're just
- 5:07exhausted. We say I'm working so hard, I'm
- 5:10so busy, I feel like I don't have time for anything.
- 5:12Well, that's true. You are working hard.
- 5:15You don't have time for anything, and you could try
- 5:17working harder this year, but that's not going to work either.
- 5:21Nothing is going to work until you focus on the right things.
- 5:25Until you focus on the right things, until you focus on your
- 5:28relationship with God, none of it will mean anything.
- 5:30You're only going to become more exhausted at the end of the
- 5:34year. The problem isn't that you're
- 5:36not working hard enough. The problem is you're working
- 5:39hard making yourself your own luxurious home while the temple
- 5:45of the Lord lies in ruin. While your relationship with God
- 5:49needs to be fixed, you're going around fixing everything else.
- 5:53Haggai wasn't trying to add more work to the Israelites plate, He
- 5:57was trying to get our priorities in order.
- 6:01Jesus didn't die so that you could have more things to do.
- 6:04Jesus died to give you new life. Love the next verses.
- 6:10And Haggai, because the people listen to him.
- 6:12They repented that they were so distracted with all the things
- 6:15of this world. And in verse 12 and 13 it says
- 6:18then there's then Zerubbabel son of Shaltiel, and Jeshua, son of
- 6:23Jehoshadek, the high priest. And the whole remnant of God's
- 6:27people began to obey the message from the Lord their God.
- 6:31When they heard the words of the prophet Haggai, whom the Lord
- 6:33their God had sent. The people feared the Lord.
- 6:36Then Haggai, the Lord's messenger, gave the people this
- 6:39message from the Lord. I am with you, says the Lord.
- 6:45I am with you. They got together.
- 6:49The Israelites got together and said, from now on we're putting
- 6:53God first, we're putting his house first.
- 6:57They repented. They put God 1st.
- 7:00And Haggai says to them, great, now here's what God says to you.
- 7:05I am with you. I am for you.
- 7:09This is the greatest promise and reward we could possibly have.
- 7:12If God is with us, then who could ever be against us?
- 7:15God wants us to make Him our top priority this year.
- 7:19Not because He wants to make you miserable.
- 7:21Not because He wants you to focus on things that you don't
- 7:23care about. God knows that if you put
- 7:26something else as your top priority besides Him, that is
- 7:30going to make you miserable. That is how you end up spinning
- 7:33your wheels and feeling exhausted day after day.
- 7:37We are built to have God at our center and until we have Him as
- 7:43our top priority, we will just be going nowhere.
- 7:46Working hard and going nowhere. I don't know what your goals are
- 7:49this year or what you have planned for your life, but if
- 7:52you truly want that thing, the first thing you need to do is
- 7:56not to chase after it harder. You chase after God harder.
- 8:01Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all of the other things will
- 8:05be given to you, and God's promise will be the same as what
- 8:09Haggai said to the people. God will be with you, and that's
- 8:12far better than anything else you could chase after anyway.
