- 0:01Speaker 1: All right, I'm not even going to try on the
- 0:05Speaker 1: record here. So go ahead, Neil. Neil, the Tampa Bay
- 0:10Speaker 1: Rays radio broadcaster, tell me how to say your name
- 0:12Speaker 1: because they're trying to– they said Solon's.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Is that right? Solon's. Repeat that, please. Solon's. Okay, all right.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I just wanted to make sure, because I do not,
- 0:25Speaker 1: that's one of the worst things. I don't want to
- 0:26Speaker 1: say your name wrong, so I want to make sure
- 0:28Speaker 1: that I get that right. And if you say it wrong,
- 0:31Speaker 1: then it's all your own fault.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah, just don't ask me to spell Brzezinski, because I
- 0:35Speaker 3: can't spell that if you can't say my name, we're even, right?
- 0:38Speaker 2: That's fine, that's fair. My name is really easy to spell.
- 0:40Speaker 1: By the way, and I'm sorry to bring this up,
- 0:43Speaker 1: your predecessor for the Rays podcast was one of my favorites.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So again, I mean, that happened a while ago.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Sorry for the loss, but he was one of the greatest,
- 0:50Speaker 1: guys and greatest radio broadcasters.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Of all time. He was awesome.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Dave's always with us, trust me. And in a year
- 0:58Speaker 3: like this, he's smiling a lot, for sure.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Okay, good. I love Dave.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Dave was awesome. Always one of my favorites when I
- 1:04Speaker 1: went to Tampa. What's going on with the Rays? How
- 1:06Speaker 1: good are the Rays? Where are they at in the season?
- 1:08Speaker 1: I mean, they just keep winning games no matter what.
- 1:10Speaker 1: They lose a guy, we win. We lose a guy,
- 1:13Speaker 1: we win.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It's a great group. It's been that way since day one.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And I think Part of it gets back to the
- 1:19Speaker 3: steady leadership they've had, the character they have in the clubhouse,
- 1:22Speaker 3: the people they have overall, and the fact that they
- 1:24Speaker 3: are really, really good players. But I think they've been
- 1:28Speaker 3: a steady force. And probably in terms of leadership, the
- 1:32Speaker 3: guy who's been leading the way has been Nick Martinez.
- 1:34Speaker 3: And it's rare to have a starting pitcher do that.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But he's been unbelievable in terming blending this group together.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And whenever it seems like they're going to hit a
- 1:42Speaker 3: tough moment, they get right over the hump. And I
- 1:44Speaker 3: think it's because they're so together as a unit.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Wait, you said since day one. I feel like this
- 1:50Speaker 4: team was good last year. They were just getting cooked outside.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Do you feel like this is something that could have
- 1:56Speaker 4: happened last year, but they had to deal with the
- 1:59Speaker 4: fact that they were playing half their games outside, even
- 2:02Speaker 4: though they did play them a stacked early in the season?
- 2:06Speaker 3: It definitely didn't help, right? I mean, you know, I
- 2:09Speaker 3: don't think, I think the beauty of this group is
- 2:10Speaker 3: they don't make any excuses, right? Yesterday, last year was
- 2:13Speaker 3: last year. and they had to deal with the situation.
- 2:16Speaker 3: They never complained about it. They just played through. But
- 2:19Speaker 3: I also think that Tropicana Field is perfect for the
- 2:22Speaker 3: style of play that they have. They're a contact-oriented team
- 2:25Speaker 3: with a lot of speed. They can beat you in
- 2:27Speaker 3: different ways offensively, and Tropicana Field is suited to that,
- 2:30Speaker 3: where Steinbrenner Field wasn't necessarily. And you also get to
- 2:33Speaker 3: play in 72 degrees versus, you know, you could argue, yes,
- 2:37Speaker 3: the games were front-loaded at the beginning of the schedule,
- 2:39Speaker 3: but then that means you're also cooking in the heat
- 2:42Speaker 3: still in May and June, and then you have a
- 2:44Speaker 3: lot of road games. And maybe that affected the ball club.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Who knows? But right now they've played really, really well
- 2:50Speaker 3: all the way through, and their stars have been their stars,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and everybody else has played a major role.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Neil, one guy who has been cooking inside or outside
- 2:59Speaker 1: is Junior Caminero. The ball he hit last night, oh, boy.
- 3:02Speaker 1: That ball was absolutely smashed. He's now the AL leader
- 3:05Speaker 1: in home runs. He's kind of killing the triple crown
- 3:07Speaker 1: for Jordan Alvarez. Can he keep this up and win
- 3:10Speaker 1: the American League home run race?
- 3:14Speaker 3: I would hope so. But I mean, I think more
- 3:16Speaker 3: than that is it's all the other things that Junior does. Yesterday, yeah,
- 3:21Speaker 3: he hit the long home run on the first and
- 3:22Speaker 3: that kind of set the tone against Atlanta in last
- 3:25Speaker 3: night's win. But I also want to emphasize his next
- 3:28Speaker 3: time up, he beat out a double play ball. And
- 3:31Speaker 3: when your stars are hitting home runs and beating out
- 3:33Speaker 3: a double play, the guy behind him, Liam Hicks, who
- 3:35Speaker 3: they got at the trading deadline, hits a home run
- 3:37Speaker 3: for a 3-1 lead. And the club never trailed after that.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And Junior also made two really good plays defensively. And
- 3:43Speaker 3: I think he's grown there. And you look at his numbers,
- 3:46Speaker 3: he's walking more than he did last year. I think
- 3:48Speaker 3: the addition to Hicks means that teams have to pitch
- 3:51Speaker 3: to him more. So in terms of the home run race,
- 3:53Speaker 3: let's see how it goes. But I mean, either way,
- 3:56Speaker 3: he's having one of the more fantastic seasons that a
- 3:58Speaker 3: raised baseball player has ever had. And that's saying a lot.
- 4:02Speaker 4: MVP is out of reach this year. What does he
- 4:04Speaker 4: need to improve on to.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Win an MVP because most people don't know much about
- 4:11Speaker 4: the Rays or Junior Caminero.
- 4:13Speaker 2: He's still only 23 years old.
- 4:16Speaker 3: You're right. And his best baseball is in front of him.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I think he's going to get even better and better.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I mean, what, he doubled his walk rate this year
- 4:23Speaker 3: and he's in the 70s. I wouldn't be shocked if
- 4:26Speaker 3: he were a guy who walked 100 times and hit
- 4:29Speaker 3: 40 homers and hit 300. I mean, I think all
- 4:32Speaker 3: those things are possible. and he's not far off from those.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I mean, he's got a nine-something OPS for the year.
- 4:39Speaker 3: And I think the other thing is his defense at
- 4:42Speaker 3: the start of this year was maybe not where he
- 4:45Speaker 3: left off last year. And I think he'll never make
- 4:47Speaker 3: an excuse, but for me, he DH'd for two and
- 4:51Speaker 3: a half weeks in the WBC and really didn't get
- 4:53Speaker 3: to play third base. And I think the rhythm of
- 4:55Speaker 3: spring training and a regular spring training would have allowed
- 4:58Speaker 3: him to get that because I thought he's really taken
- 5:01Speaker 3: off defensively the back half of this year, as he
- 5:04Speaker 3: did a year ago.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Let's not use the WBC excuse again. I mean, certain
- 5:09Speaker 1: teams are using that with certain players. This guy's still
- 5:11Speaker 1: having an unbelievable year.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So we moved on.
- 5:14Speaker 1: We moved on, Neil, from the WBC and the WBC jinx.
- 5:18Speaker 1: The stars on Tampa Bay are what's amazing, right? We
- 5:21Speaker 1: mentioned Junior. Yandy Diaz is having a heck of a year.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Aranda's having a great year. And then you bring in
- 5:26Speaker 1: Liam Hicks, who you also mentioned. Is this star power
- 5:29Speaker 1: enough to carry the Rays for a deep postseason run?
- 5:32Speaker 1: They've always been better than expected in the regular season,
- 5:35Speaker 1: probably even this year. They get to the postseason, and
- 5:38Speaker 1: they've had a couple nice runs where they've gone to
- 5:40Speaker 1: the World Series, but can these stars carry this team
- 5:43Speaker 1: to postseason glory?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I think so, because I think those aren't the only
- 5:48Speaker 3: stars among the group. I mean, to me, Drew Rasmussen,
- 5:50Speaker 3: the way he's pitched this year, is a star pitcher.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Brian Baker has been arguably the best reliever in the
- 5:56Speaker 3: American league during the course of this year. You know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: and I think you look at the rest of the rotation,
- 6:02Speaker 3: the way Freddie Peralta has pitched his last three times out,
- 6:05Speaker 3: he's pitched like the Freddie Peralta who was an all-star
- 6:07Speaker 3: with the Milwaukee Brewers. And I'm not even including Shane McClanahan,
- 6:11Speaker 3: who certainly the expectations are he will be back before
- 6:14Speaker 3: the end of the regular season and Nick Martinez in
- 6:17Speaker 3: the year he's had. I certainly think there are enough
- 6:20Speaker 3: options pitching wise. And then I think, From a position
- 6:24Speaker 3: player standpoint, I think Liam Hicks has made them deeper,
- 6:26Speaker 3: but he may not be seen as a superstar, but
- 6:29Speaker 3: Chandler Simpson's got, what, back-to-back 40-steal seasons, and he's second
- 6:33Speaker 3: to Jordan Alvarez in hitting in the American League. And
- 6:36Speaker 3: guys like Victor Mesa have really... Victor Mesa Jr. have
- 6:39Speaker 3: really come on the second half of the season. Richie
- 6:42Speaker 3: Palacios has had a nice run. They've got some really
- 6:44Speaker 3: good support players, and they also are the team that
- 6:47Speaker 3: strikes out the least. And when teams are trying to
- 6:49Speaker 3: get swing and miss in the postseason... to me, the
- 6:52Speaker 3: teams that can put the ball in play and score
- 6:54Speaker 3: in more than just hitting the home run ball, I
- 6:56Speaker 3: think that's value in the postseason.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Dehydration is real, people. So are quince electrolyte stick packs.
- 7:06Speaker 6: All of a sudden, you don't need some big bottle
- 7:08Speaker 6: to carry around. Just these little packets if you suddenly
- 7:11Speaker 6: feel like you need a little hydration. Raspberry salt, delicious.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Citrus salt, my personal favorite. And watermelon salt for those
- 7:18Speaker 6: watermelon lovers out there.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Very solid.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Just in your water bottle.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm a watermelon guy.
- 7:24Speaker 1: It's quick, easy in the morning, wake up, feeling a
- 7:26Speaker 1: little down, throw some in there, feeling great, throw some
- 7:29Speaker 1: in there because it'll keep.
- 7:29Speaker 2: That high going. So stay on it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: It hydrates you because of that fermented rice, great tasting,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and it makes you feel better.
- 7:38Speaker 6: They're made in the USA, rigorously third-party tested. Give your
- 7:41Speaker 6: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Quince.com slash
- 7:44Speaker 6: foul gets you free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.
- 7:48Speaker 6: That's quince.com slash foul for free shipping and 365-day returns.
- 7:52Speaker 6: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and
- 7:54Speaker 6: Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
- 7:57Speaker 6: or prevent any disease.
- 7:59Speaker 4: All right, set out my rotation. Sit on my rotation
- 8:02Speaker 4: for the five-game series because they're going to have the
- 8:06Speaker 4: off days. And I think for a team like this,
- 8:08Speaker 4: it's huge. Obviously, Rasmussen is first. But from there, where
- 8:13Speaker 4: do you go?
- 8:14Speaker 3: Well, I mean, first things first, they got to make
- 8:16Speaker 3: sure to– they still have four games with New York.
- 8:19Speaker 3: But let's say they do. Okay, let's say they do.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And they finish out the division and they get the
- 8:24Speaker 3: number one seed, which I think is really important for
- 8:26Speaker 3: this group to avoid New York and Boston and– let
- 8:30Speaker 3: them hopefully beat up one another. But the way that's
- 8:33Speaker 3: set up, you probably only need three starting pitchers, right?
- 8:37Speaker 3: You could start Drew in games one and five, and
- 8:40Speaker 3: then you're looking at games one and four, and then
- 8:44Speaker 3: two and five would be the same starter, and then
- 8:45Speaker 3: it's who you want to go with in game three.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And I think the last few weeks are going to
- 8:50Speaker 3: kind of determine what route the Rays go in that regard.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I think they have a lot of good options. I
- 8:55Speaker 3: wouldn't be shocked if they tandem started anybody. I wouldn't
- 8:58Speaker 3: be shocked if they bullpenned. I don't think it's it's,
- 9:01Speaker 3: you know, all hands on deck type situation because the
- 9:04Speaker 3: way the postseason is set up and you've seen the draw,
- 9:07Speaker 3: the three best teams are going to be in one half.
- 9:10Speaker 3: So you kind of feel if you can get out
- 9:11Speaker 3: of a best of five that you've got a much
- 9:14Speaker 3: better shot of getting to to the fall classic.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You know, what is Freddie Peralta brought? He got off
- 9:20Speaker 1: to a terrible start. He wasn't having a great year.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I mean, nothing like the Rays hooking him up, by
- 9:25Speaker 1: the way. Oh, your first start's going to be in Colorado.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And then I think his second start was in Sacramento, right?
- 9:31Speaker 1: So thanks, Kevin Cash. And, you know, I just blanked
- 9:37Speaker 1: on the pitcher, Kyle Snyder, who's been there forever, right? Thanks, guys,
- 9:42Speaker 1: for really giving me a solid start. Couldn't have pitched
- 9:45Speaker 1: me in Seattle or somewhere else. So what has he
- 9:47Speaker 1: changed and what has he done since then? Because he's
- 9:49Speaker 1: been really good his last three starts.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Well, I mean, first you can see by the way
- 9:53Speaker 3: he's pitching, his confidence is there. And and when you
- 9:56Speaker 3: throw with conviction um you're going to have success in
- 9:59Speaker 3: this game and I think they've made some mechanical tweaks
- 10:03Speaker 3: you know once they had a chance to work with
- 10:04Speaker 3: him and get him into their lab and make some
- 10:07Speaker 3: adjustments you're starting to see the extension back on the
- 10:10Speaker 3: fastball and really for Freddie as you know everything plays
- 10:13Speaker 3: off his fastball And last night after the first inning,
- 10:17Speaker 3: I think he was almost 70% fastballs. But the threat
- 10:20Speaker 3: of that changeup and his off-speed stuff makes it really
- 10:23Speaker 3: play up well. And when he's got 94 to 97
- 10:26Speaker 3: with extension and he's getting pop-ups and shallow fly balls
- 10:30Speaker 3: and swings and misses, you know he's right. And beyond that,
- 10:33Speaker 3: I mean, he brings a great energy and a vibe
- 10:35Speaker 3: to a clubhouse. Nick Martinez and he have known each
- 10:37Speaker 3: other for several years. He played with Drew Rasmussen in Milwaukee.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I just think this was a great environment for him.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I think it's probably the closest thing he could find
- 10:46Speaker 3: to what he had in Milwaukee. And now he's got that,
- 10:50Speaker 3: and hopefully it leads to further success in September and October.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Hey, last one, Neil, for me. I live in Orlando, okay?
- 11:01Speaker 1: The Rays weren't around when I was a kid. They
- 11:03Speaker 1: became kind of the team for people in Florida, you know,
- 11:07Speaker 1: in the northern part of Florida, central part where I live.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I know Patrick Zalupski. I've had many conversations with him.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He seems like a great guy, right? I know some
- 11:16Speaker 1: other guys that are involved in the ownership group of
- 11:18Speaker 1: the Rays. What does it mean to know that they
- 11:21Speaker 1: are actually going to get a stadium? And for me, listen,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I have family that lives in Tampa, in Tampa proper,
- 11:27Speaker 1: right there in Carolwood and all that. They are so
- 11:29Speaker 1: excited that they don't have to cross the causeway. I
- 11:32Speaker 1: was with them this past weekend, and they said, man,
- 11:34Speaker 1: we're going to get season tickets because it's so much
- 11:37Speaker 1: easier for us not to have to drive across the causeway.
- 11:40Speaker 1: What does it mean to the Rays organization that, I mean,
- 11:43Speaker 1: unless something crazy happens that this is done and the
- 11:46Speaker 1: Rays are actually going to have this thing. And I
- 11:47Speaker 1: think they have 133 acres. They're going to be able
- 11:50Speaker 1: to do a battery type thing.
- 11:52Speaker 2: What does it mean?
- 11:54Speaker 3: It's kind of neat that we're in Atlanta right now
- 11:57Speaker 3: because the battery is kind of the model for everybody else.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And the area that the Rays have is twice the
- 12:03Speaker 3: size of the battery. So you can imagine the impact
- 12:06Speaker 3: it can have. in terms of your organization financially. You know,
- 12:09Speaker 3: I look at an organization like the Braves and they
- 12:12Speaker 3: have guys like Acuna and Albies and Riley and Olsen
- 12:16Speaker 3: and so many of their young, talented players are locked
- 12:19Speaker 3: up for several years. I think it'll give the Rays
- 12:23Speaker 3: the opportunity to hopefully do some of that, be more flexible.
- 12:29Speaker 3: But also I think it's just going to be a
- 12:30Speaker 3: great place and environment and have a forever home. And
- 12:32Speaker 3: I think the organization has done a marvelous job of
- 12:35Speaker 3: getting it to this point and I know that ownership
- 12:39Speaker 3: has been in Atlanta, too, to get a closer look
- 12:42Speaker 3: at how things have been managed here. They've been here
- 12:45Speaker 3: on several occasions, this series as well. And, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 3: I'm hoping everything continues to go in the positive direction
- 12:51Speaker 3: because you're not the only one who and your family's
- 12:54Speaker 3: not the only one who's super excited about what's to
- 12:57Speaker 3: come here in the future. But first things first, hopefully
- 13:00Speaker 3: this team can wrap up a playoff spot this week
- 13:02Speaker 3: and hold off the Yankees in the divisions.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Neil, I have no idea how they're going to run
- 13:07Speaker 4: the organization. But I doubt they're going to ask you
- 13:09Speaker 4: when they build the new stadium what you would like.
- 13:12Speaker 4: So now is your chance in the new stadium. What
- 13:15Speaker 4: is the one thing you want in the radio booth
- 13:17Speaker 4: that you're like, that would be awesome?
- 13:21Speaker 3: In the radio booth? Boy, that's a good question, Eric.
- 13:25Speaker 3: As long as we're still at a great vantage point,
- 13:28Speaker 3: I know AJ's been to our ballpark and you have
- 13:31Speaker 3: as well, Eric. As long as we have a really
- 13:33Speaker 3: good sight lines, Um, everything else would take care of itself. Uh,
- 13:37Speaker 3: I don't ask for much. I'm the most low maintenance guy, um, uh,
- 13:42Speaker 3: of all. So I'll, I'll let others tell, say what
- 13:46Speaker 3: they want for the ballpark. And as long as it
- 13:48Speaker 3: has a Ray tank, I'm good.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Oh, come on. They're not going to have a Ray tank,
- 13:52Speaker 2: but just don't be like Michael K. Okay.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And you need such a big fridge, because I don't
- 13:56Speaker 1: know if you heard this, but I got accused by
- 13:59Speaker 1: Michael Case. When you see Michael, tell him I love him,
- 14:00Speaker 1: but I didn't steal his diet Snapples that he was
- 14:03Speaker 1: complaining about. So when I go to the Rays, when
- 14:06Speaker 1: I do a Rays game, which my first ever game
- 14:08Speaker 1: was a Rays game, just know that I am not
- 14:11Speaker 1: the Snapple stealer, okay? So when you have a huge
- 14:13Speaker 1: fridge and a huge booth, I am not the Snapple stealer.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So do you want Snapple the next time you're here?
- 14:20Speaker 3: Is that what I'm hearing?
- 14:21Speaker 2: No, no.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I usually get a black coffee before the game, and
- 14:25Speaker 1: then I just get waters during the game. So I
- 14:28Speaker 1: usually get one water and one coffee during the game. Now,
- 14:30Speaker 1: they bring me all kinds of food. So if I
- 14:32Speaker 1: have one request, we need cool food. I mean, it's Tampa.
- 14:36Speaker 1: You got Columbia. I mean, you got Dats.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You got all those places.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Like, you got Burns. I love a Burns steak. I mean,
- 14:42Speaker 1: you can bring me Alaska from Burns.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Just bring me the whole dessert room menu from Burns. Like,
- 14:47Speaker 1: that's my request as a broadcaster. A nice booth with
- 14:50Speaker 1: lots of room and great food. And the rest I'm
- 14:53Speaker 1: happy with. And a game under two and a half hours, too,
- 14:55Speaker 1: if we're being really picky.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Well, hopefully the Rays pitch as well as they have
- 14:59Speaker 3: this year. Maybe you'll get your wish.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 15:03Speaker 2: That'd be great. That'd be great.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Well, Neil, thank you so much. We really appreciate it.
- 15:08Speaker 1: We had BA on not long ago. Tell everyone there

- 16:32Speaker 5: Us right now.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Brett, great to have you on the show, man.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Thanks for the time.
- 16:34Speaker 6: And how's life in Toronto for you?
- 16:38Speaker 5: It's been pretty good. You know, it was a bit
- 16:42Speaker 5: of whirlwind for a little while, just getting my feet
- 16:44Speaker 5: underneath me. But, you know, playing a lot of baseball,
- 16:47Speaker 5: playing well, boys been hot. So we've been playing pretty well.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Can you give us a little bit more? Oh, go ahead, AJ. No, no, no. Awesome.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Before we get into this interview, I just want to know,
- 16:58Speaker 1: was I your favorite player growing up since you had
- 17:01Speaker 1: to grow up a Twins fan?
- 17:04Speaker 2: I knew Kratz.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Would love that. I remember some of the good old beef, but, yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 5: I mean, I always enjoyed watching some good ball and
- 17:13Speaker 5: then watching some good on-field beef.
- 17:18Speaker 2: That's all.
- 17:18Speaker 1: By the way, you were born at, like, you were born,
- 17:20Speaker 1: I was already basically not a twin anymore, so it doesn't,
- 17:23Speaker 1: it's okay, it's okay. It doesn't affect my ego at all.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You barely, probably don't remember. You're more of a Joe
- 17:29Speaker 1: Maurer fan. That's okay, I understand.
- 17:30Speaker 5: Joe Maurer, Nick Punto. Joe Nathan.
- 17:36Speaker 4: We need a random twin, though, that you were like,
- 17:39Speaker 4: I really like that random twin.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Everybody can say Joe Maurer.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, Ben Revere was the one.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I love watching him run it down the center.
- 17:51Speaker 2: He wasn't that random. He was a first-round pick.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I mean, he's just a good outfielder that
- 17:58Speaker 5: I really liked watching growing up for the Twins.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Did you go to a game in the Metronome?
- 18:04Speaker 5: No, so my dad was, I did, yes, but not
- 18:08Speaker 5: that I can remember. I actually remember my dad was
- 18:10Speaker 5: a college baseball coach for Augsburg University, and they would
- 18:14Speaker 5: always get the dawn games, like the 1 a.m., 2 a.m.
- 18:17Speaker 5: games in the Metrodome in that, like, marsh-ish time when
- 18:21Speaker 5: snow would still be on the ground. I remember, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 5: skipping school to be a bat boy and going to
- 18:27Speaker 5: the Metrodome, so it was pretty sweet to, like, be
- 18:29Speaker 5: on field. That's what I remember about that.
- 18:31Speaker 2: That's cool. That's cool.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I also remember we had to play at 10 a.m.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So the Gophers, your Gophers could play football at 7 p.m.
- 18:38Speaker 1: We had a 10 a.m. start and we had to
- 18:40Speaker 1: be done by like one o'clock because if we went
- 18:42Speaker 1: past one o'clock, they couldn't get the field ready. So
- 18:44Speaker 1: thank your Gophers for those 10 a.m. Eric Milton saying
- 18:46Speaker 1: thanks him for a no hitter one time because he
- 18:48Speaker 1: threw a no hitter in one of those games.
- 18:49Speaker 2: So it's cool, Brad. Thank you.
- 18:51Speaker 1: But the other question I have for you is, is
- 18:53Speaker 1: you mentioned all these. all these like random twins. And
- 18:56Speaker 1: you mentioned your dad coached at Augsburg college. Why is
- 18:59Speaker 1: every college in Minnesota, the Augsburg, Augs, Augies, the St. Olaf, Oles,
- 19:04Speaker 1: the St.
- 19:05Speaker 2: John's, Johnny's.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Can we not get original with the nicknames? We just
- 19:07Speaker 1: have to take their names and just whatever their first
- 19:10Speaker 1: name is. We're going for the second name too.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Nah, I mean, I couldn't tell you about that. I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 5: I was more of a gopher kid growing up. Uh,
- 19:18Speaker 5: so I would just say, uh, I like my Gophers, Augsburg,
- 19:23Speaker 5: Augsburg Augies. But yeah, I mean, I never really even
- 19:26Speaker 5: noticed that until you just pointed that out.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Well, now, see, this is why you come on the show.
- 19:32Speaker 4: AJ will teach you something about your state that you
- 19:34Speaker 4: didn't even care to know. But what I want to know,
- 19:36Speaker 4: because we talk all the time, we have different guys
- 19:39Speaker 4: on here. We just talked about Kevin Gaussman. You know,
- 19:42Speaker 4: he was in Toronto forever. He gets traded. What is
- 19:45Speaker 4: it like for you getting traded and then right into the,
- 19:50Speaker 4: the mix in the big league team that clearly still
- 19:53Speaker 4: has aspirations of making the playoffs?
- 19:57Speaker 5: Yeah. Like I said, it was a whirlwind. The first
- 20:02Speaker 5: game that I played in the Toronto Blue Jays organization
- 20:05Speaker 5: in Buffalo, I didn't have my gear, so I was
- 20:07Speaker 5: using a teammate's bat. I was using a teammate's cleats, um,
- 20:11Speaker 5: and then finally got my stuff, played one game and
- 20:14Speaker 5: they said, all right, you're going to the show. You're
- 20:15Speaker 5: going to face Zach Guler in Philadelphia. So, um, it
- 20:19Speaker 5: was pretty crazy. Uh, I wasn't thinking about like, you know, uh,
- 20:23Speaker 5: post-season stuff at the time. I was just trying to,
- 20:27Speaker 5: you know, put good at-bats together, um, find out how
- 20:30Speaker 5: I kind of fit in to the team and the
- 20:32Speaker 5: Oregon for the future plans. And, uh, Obviously, like I said,
- 20:36Speaker 5: we've played really, really good baseball down the stretch, and
- 20:39Speaker 5: we're going to continue to do that.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Were you a little pissed now that you've been up
- 20:44Speaker 4: in the big leagues and you're one of the best
- 20:46Speaker 4: players that have produced the most since you've been up there?
- 20:50Speaker 4: Were you a little pissed that you had to go
- 20:52Speaker 4: one game in Buffalo? Because had you, as a guy
- 20:55Speaker 4: that got traded from AAA teams to big league teams,
- 20:58Speaker 4: they would have paid for all your moving expenses had
- 21:01Speaker 4: you gone right to the big leagues. Did you feel
- 21:03Speaker 4: like the one game in Buffalo was necessary, or was there, like,
- 21:06Speaker 4: a roster move that ended up happening that you ended
- 21:09Speaker 4: up making your debut then after that first game?
- 21:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Honestly, I.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Have morally been taking it where my feet have been at,
- 21:21Speaker 5: not really worrying about the next step, like, things I can't.
- 21:24Speaker 5: That's not really something I can control. So, like, when
- 21:29Speaker 5: I first got traded, like, I initially was, like, And
- 21:32Speaker 5: this was before the Varsha trading. I was just more like,
- 21:36Speaker 5: I want to be where my feet are at. I
- 21:38Speaker 5: knew I was going straight to Buffalo. I was just
- 21:40Speaker 5: going to play baseball. And that's nothing really changes, you know,
- 21:45Speaker 5: at all. So I just wanted to be who I
- 21:47Speaker 5: was and just keep playing baseball. And then, yeah, I mean,
- 21:51Speaker 5: the travel did suck. It was like five flights in
- 21:54Speaker 5: three days, I think, or something like that, maybe six
- 21:56Speaker 5: and three days. But like I said, like I wouldn't
- 21:58Speaker 5: have traded for a world. it was an opportunity and
- 22:02Speaker 5: just wanted to make the most out of it.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Do you have to constantly repeat what you just said?
- 22:06Speaker 4: Be who you are, be where your feet are at
- 22:09Speaker 4: because you're a guy in, in the game of baseball
- 22:13Speaker 4: where everybody has to hit home runs or they're not
- 22:16Speaker 4: productive in the big leagues who doesn't hit home runs.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Do you have to, when a hitting coach, when I'm
- 22:22Speaker 4: trying to think of, I mean, I'm blanking on the
- 22:24Speaker 4: hitting coach in Toronto, he's gonna be like, Hey, you
- 22:27Speaker 4: know what? I see a little bit that we can,
- 22:29Speaker 4: We can unlock some power for you here. I'm sure
- 22:32Speaker 4: in the minor leagues you were told that all the time.
- 22:35Speaker 4: How do you listen but then block it out and
- 22:39Speaker 4: just play your game?
- 22:43Speaker 5: I mean, ever since I got here, Toronto's really been
- 22:45Speaker 5: just like be yourself. They have not pushed any on
- 22:49Speaker 5: the lope of like you need to hit for power,
- 22:51Speaker 5: which is great. It puts a lot less pressure on
- 22:54Speaker 5: me just to perform and just try and get on
- 22:57Speaker 5: base and be a catalyst for this team. um but
- 23:00Speaker 5: yeah no absolutely like when I was in the Cubs
- 23:02Speaker 5: org especially in the minors it was like what can
- 23:04Speaker 5: we do to get your bat speed up what can
- 23:06Speaker 5: we do you know to get your launch angle up
- 23:08Speaker 5: um and I've always been open to it like I'm
- 23:10Speaker 5: never gonna say no to power I'm never gonna say
- 23:12Speaker 5: no um you know to some extra base hits but
- 23:16Speaker 5: I think it's really easy to forget about like what
- 23:19Speaker 5: gets you to where you're at and like being successful
- 23:22Speaker 5: because I think now like the game is so statistically
- 23:24Speaker 5: based and there's a lot of good merit in it
- 23:27Speaker 5: for sure um but Yeah, I mean, I'm always going
- 23:31Speaker 5: to be open for it, and I always want to
- 23:33Speaker 5: try new things. The game is all about adjustments, as
- 23:35Speaker 5: you guys know. Changing, moving your hands around, however your
- 23:42Speaker 5: stance is. I'm always going to be open to that,
- 23:44Speaker 5: to try and become a more complete player, because everyone
- 23:48Speaker 5: can still work on something, no matter what. But yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 5: I mean, it is always there. Like, oh, if he
- 23:55Speaker 5: could have more power, if he could do this, if
- 23:57Speaker 5: he could do that. But ultimately, I just... want to
- 23:59Speaker 5: be able to do what the best that I can
- 24:02Speaker 5: based on what I've been given. And I'm not like
- 24:05Speaker 5: Aaron Dredger's height. I'm not, you know, the biggest dude.
- 24:08Speaker 5: So just trying to make the most of what I've
- 24:09Speaker 5: got right now. And we can figure all the other
- 24:12Speaker 5: stuff out down the road.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:14Speaker 1: What's it, what's it like? I mean, I'd tell him
- 24:17Speaker 1: that I'm not changing anything. Cause you're raking, you're playing
- 24:19Speaker 1: an unbelievable center field. You kind of, and then when
- 24:21Speaker 1: you talked to him, the blue Jays, they said you've
- 24:23Speaker 1: kind of been a spark plug for them. since you've
- 24:26Speaker 1: come up, have you ever just thought about looking at
- 24:28Speaker 1: some of these people and saying, you know what, dude,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm doing just fine. I'm just going to keep doing
- 24:31Speaker 1: what I'm doing. I know you don't need to hit
- 24:33Speaker 1: and not everyone's a 30 home run guy.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 24:35Speaker 1: If you can get on base at the clip you're
- 24:37Speaker 1: getting on, you can cause havoc the way you're causing it.
- 24:39Speaker 1: There's got to be value in that, right?
- 24:43Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you see that with Chandler Simpson,
- 24:46Speaker 5: like he's the one of one, you know, type guy
- 24:50Speaker 5: where he's literally just slapping a ball on the ground.
- 24:51Speaker 5: And I, I think it's, as much as it's frustrating
- 24:54Speaker 5: when you're on the opposite side of the field, it's
- 24:56Speaker 5: really fun to watch. Like, cause it's just something that's
- 24:59Speaker 5: not ordinary, right? It's just totally different. And I think
- 25:03Speaker 5: that's what baseball is all about. Like there are guys
- 25:06Speaker 5: that are going to be able to hit 50 pumps
- 25:07Speaker 5: a year. And then there's guys that are going to
- 25:08Speaker 5: be able to hit 300, like your eyes. And I
- 25:11Speaker 5: think taking away from what you're really good at is
- 25:15Speaker 5: something that it makes you less of a ball player. And,
- 25:19Speaker 5: I think we're now starting to see a little bit more,
- 25:21Speaker 5: especially with pitching and how good pitching is. You guys
- 25:23Speaker 5: were talking about Flitler. Like I've faced him twice and man,
- 25:25Speaker 5: that dude stuff is stupid. It's, it's really important to
- 25:30Speaker 5: have people that, you know, can have long at bats
- 25:32Speaker 5: against guys like that and tire them out or steal
- 25:34Speaker 5: bases or that is a complete team. And like I said,
- 25:38Speaker 5: it's a one through nine, it's a one through nine order.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Everyone's at bats batter. And so the more that you
- 25:44Speaker 5: can have guys that can do a little bit of this,
- 25:46Speaker 5: a little bit of that, you know, it's going to
- 25:47Speaker 5: make a more complete lineup for sure.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Kratz football season is back and Fabletics knows all about it.
- 25:54Speaker 6: They just paired with the number one wide receiver in
- 25:57Speaker 6: the NFL, Jamar Chase, on a new collection.

- 26:02Speaker 4: You're going to catch some deals when you go to
- 26:04Speaker 4: Fabletics because this is all affordable stuff, but the quality
- 26:08Speaker 4: is through the roof. Comfortability, like it is ridiculous. Go
- 26:12Speaker 4: for it.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Yeah, it's about feeling good all day, and you need
- 26:15Speaker 6: to feel more comfortable in your athletic clothing since you're
- 26:18Speaker 6: wearing it all day. It's not just at the gym anymore,

- 26:51Speaker 4: KP, Kevin Pillar is one of the guys that comes
- 26:53Speaker 4: on and hosts here with us sometimes. He said a
- 26:56Speaker 4: few nights ago, you moved up in the box. Was
- 26:59Speaker 4: that something that was just your, Hey, you know what?
- 27:02Speaker 4: I need to move up farther in the box here.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Or was that something that was suggested to you?
- 27:08Speaker 5: No, I've always, I've always done that. Like, There's always
- 27:11Speaker 5: a game inside of the game, and that's Craig Yoho's
- 27:15Speaker 5: got one of the better change-ups. I faced him in
- 27:19Speaker 5: high A. I faced him in triple A. And like
- 27:22Speaker 5: I said, he's got one of the better change-ups in
- 27:24Speaker 5: the league. It's kind of like Devin Williams-esque, super slow,
- 27:26Speaker 5: like Bugs Bunny. And he was throwing it at like
- 27:29Speaker 5: a 55%, 56% clip. So I was just like, if
- 27:33Speaker 5: you're going to throw it, I'm going to try and
- 27:34Speaker 5: eliminate all the depth that you get in the last
- 27:38Speaker 5: five inches of the plate and move up. And he
- 27:42Speaker 5: ended up throwing two of them. I moved up on
- 27:45Speaker 5: the first one. He threw a front side, like a
- 27:47Speaker 5: front side, like in changeup, took it for a strike
- 27:50Speaker 5: and then moved up and moved back to try and
- 27:53Speaker 5: like make him throw a heater. But he left the
- 27:55Speaker 5: changeup up again. So I was able to get there,
- 27:57Speaker 5: but there's more mind games to it than it is.
- 28:00Speaker 5: And like, I always want to try and eliminate a
- 28:04Speaker 5: pitcher's best pitch to the best of my ability. and
- 28:08Speaker 5: uh try and make him run away from it because
- 28:10Speaker 5: then for me as a hitter i feel like i've
- 28:12Speaker 5: been a little bit more victorious even if i do
- 28:14Speaker 5: get out if i'm able to make them eliminate their
- 28:16Speaker 5: best pitch um but yeah like that was planned i've
- 28:19Speaker 5: been doing that in college i've been doing that in
- 28:21Speaker 5: high school um especially with guys that have really good
- 28:24Speaker 5: stuff i'm just trying to eliminate the off speed just
- 28:27Speaker 5: challenging me like just give me your best year um
- 28:29Speaker 5: because that's when i'm gonna be trying to hit and
- 28:32Speaker 5: uh just eliminate some of the the extra movement that
- 28:34Speaker 5: they get towards the bottom zone i'm in That.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Is just, that is tremendous. We're going to clip this,
- 28:41Speaker 4: and there's going to be so many people.
- 28:42Speaker 2: That will be like, what? He should be swinging for the.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Poolside dinger the whole time.
- 28:48Speaker 2: That is great.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Like, that is the approach that allows you to do
- 28:51Speaker 4: what you've done. And ironically, it is not done in
- 28:55Speaker 4: the game, and that's why I think we see such
- 28:57Speaker 4: low batting averages, even though pitches are really good, like
- 28:59Speaker 4: you said. But I want to talk about your defense.
- 29:03Speaker 4: What is it that makes your defense different? possibly be
- 29:07Speaker 4: able to make it to the next level, take it
- 29:09Speaker 4: to the next level of you're already at your short,
- 29:13Speaker 4: short time in the big leagues, gold glove numbers, gold glove,
- 29:17Speaker 4: defensive runs, saved all those things. How do you take
- 29:21Speaker 4: that to the next level in what you do daily
- 29:24Speaker 4: pregame and everything like that?
- 29:28Speaker 5: Yeah. I would say the big thing, especially about outfield
- 29:33Speaker 5: nowadays is like the first step time. That's what they
- 29:37Speaker 5: harped a lot when I was in the Cubs org.
- 29:39Speaker 5: And then burst is kind of like, I think it's
- 29:42Speaker 5: like the time that you have for the first 10
- 29:45Speaker 5: feet from where you start is like burst. And then
- 29:49Speaker 5: first step timing is like three feet from where you
- 29:51Speaker 5: land to like when the ball's hit. And worked on
- 29:54Speaker 5: that really, really hard over the past few years and
- 29:57Speaker 5: found something that clicked. and it's a little bit different
- 29:59Speaker 5: for everyone. So like, um, obviously I was behind Pete. Um,
- 30:05Speaker 5: and he, you know, he's got one of the best
- 30:08Speaker 5: in the league. Like that's why he is a gold Glover. He's,
- 30:12Speaker 5: you know, he's, he's the best defensive outfielder we've seen
- 30:15Speaker 5: in a long time, honestly, um, in my opinion, at least.
- 30:19Speaker 5: And like, there are other guys like a young for
- 30:21Speaker 5: the nationals who I watched a lot of film on. Um,
- 30:25Speaker 5: and it's just kind of taking what, works best for me.
- 30:30Speaker 5: So like, I like to walk into it and then
- 30:32Speaker 5: get a jump while the balls, uh, and I'd like
- 30:35Speaker 5: to be in the air when the balls hit. So like,
- 30:37Speaker 5: if you were to take a video of like, whoever's
- 30:40Speaker 5: that short, like Jimenez, I want to be in the
- 30:41Speaker 5: air with him, um, and land at the same time
- 30:45Speaker 5: as him pretty much like that would be perfectly ideal,
- 30:47Speaker 5: except I like to move forward, um, to just get
- 30:50Speaker 5: some sort of momentum, some sort of movement. And I
- 30:53Speaker 5: think that's really helped, um, me get a lot better jumps, um,
- 30:57Speaker 5: And obviously like having speed helps a lot. So you
- 30:59Speaker 5: get really good jumps with a lot of speed and
- 31:01Speaker 5: you can cover a lot of ground out there. I
- 31:04Speaker 5: would just say like the biggest thing too, like I
- 31:06Speaker 5: learned from David Peralta. He was with the Cubs for
- 31:09Speaker 5: spring training and I was in big league camp at
- 31:12Speaker 5: the time and just like a random minor leaguer. And
- 31:16Speaker 5: one of the things that he said is like the
- 31:18Speaker 5: best jumps and the best practice you'll ever get is
- 31:21Speaker 5: during BP. So whenever we had BP, I was out
- 31:25Speaker 5: in center trying to get jumps. And it didn't mean
- 31:28Speaker 5: like I was sprinting after the ball, like full speed,
- 31:31Speaker 5: like every single rep. It was more just like making
- 31:34Speaker 5: sure my timing was good, getting a good few, two,
- 31:38Speaker 5: three hard steps. And that's it. That's the rep. Take
- 31:40Speaker 5: a few breaks and then do the same thing over
- 31:42Speaker 5: and over again. I think that's really helped. And, you know,
- 31:45Speaker 5: hopefully we can continue to do that. And like I said,
- 31:49Speaker 5: like I want to be out there for my pitchers.
- 31:51Speaker 5: I've got their back. They've got mine. And they've done
- 31:54Speaker 5: a really good job as of lately. I've really not
- 31:56Speaker 5: had to go and get anything. That's why I was
- 31:58Speaker 5: talking to our outfield coach the other day. I was like, dude,
- 32:01Speaker 5: I really haven't gotten that many balls because our pitchers
- 32:04Speaker 5: have been really, really good. So, yeah, making it easy
- 32:07Speaker 5: on my legs.
- 32:09Speaker 2: You mentioned PCA and how you're behind him.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Is it pretty cool to see that he's going to
- 32:12Speaker 1: probably win the MVP in the National League for what
- 32:15Speaker 1: he's done?
- 32:15Speaker 2: And then you're thinking like, whew.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Man, I'm glad they traded me because I was never
- 32:20Speaker 1: going to get any run in Chicago with that dude there.
- 32:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, he deserves it, man. He works really hard.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Super down-to-earth guy. I think a lot of people think
- 32:30Speaker 5: that he's kind of not the nicest guy, but in
- 32:34Speaker 5: the clubhouse, he's one of the coolest dudes. Like I said,
- 32:38Speaker 5: I really wasn't a top huge prospect. I wasn't top
- 32:41Speaker 5: 10 in the Cubs, or never was, never top five. But,
- 32:46Speaker 5: you know, like whenever we went out to dinners as
- 32:47Speaker 5: a team, like during spring training or for a birthday
- 32:50Speaker 5: or something, and he was there, he was always like
- 32:52Speaker 5: super down to earth, like would ask me how I'm
- 32:55Speaker 5: doing and stuff like that. So it's great to see
- 32:57Speaker 5: him not only doing it on the defensive side, but
- 32:59Speaker 5: on the offensive side, because he's worked on it really hard.
- 33:03Speaker 5: I know he cares a lot. You see that a
- 33:05Speaker 5: lot with a lot of like the frustration that comes
- 33:07Speaker 5: out sometimes when he gets out. But I love to
- 33:09Speaker 5: see that because that means that he cares. And yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 5: just super happy for him. Oh, yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 6: That's cool that you were able to spend some time there.
- 33:17Speaker 5: And I'm with you.
- 33:17Speaker 6: I mean, we've had him on multiple times here.
- 33:19Speaker 5: He's fun.
- 33:20Speaker 6: And he knows how to play to the crowd, giving
- 33:22Speaker 6: you answers that aren't vanilla.
- 33:24Speaker 5: I mean, same with you, dude.
- 33:26Speaker 6: Great, great interview. Really appreciate the time. Hope you enjoyed it.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Thanks for hopping on with us. Keep doing your thing
- 33:31Speaker 6: out there.
- 33:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I appreciate it, guys. Thank you.
