- 0:00The day will come, says the Lord, when I will make a new
- 0:04covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant
- 0:08will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them
- 0:12by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke
- 0:15that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves
- 0:19his wife, says the Lord. But this is the
- 0:23new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the
- 0:27Lord. I will put my laws in their mind and I will write
- 0:31them on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my
- 0:35people. What is the Old Covenant and
- 0:39what is the New Covenant? How are
- 0:43they different? How are we to be walking?
- 0:47Are we supposed to be in the Old Covenant or the New Covenant?
- 0:51These are the questions we're going to unpack and look at today.
- 0:54Listen in. Welcome to the One Year Audio Bible
- 0:57Podcast. Today is October 18th.
- 1:01Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 1:05one year. This week we are reading from the New Living
- 1:08Translation for the Old Testament and for the New
- 1:11Testament.
- 1:16Jeremiah 31:27-32.
- 1:25The time will come, says the Lord, when I will greatly increase
- 1:30the population and multiply the number of cattle here in Israel and
- 1:33Judah. In the past I uprooted and tore down
- 1:37this nation. I overthrew it, destroyed it, and brought disaster upon
- 1:42it. But in the future I will plant it and build it
- 1:46up, says the Lord. The people will no longer
- 1:49quote this proverb: The parents eat sour grapes, but their children's
- 1:53mouths pucker at the taste. All people will die for
- 1:57their own sins. Those who eat the sour grapes will be the ones whose
- 2:00mouths will pucker. The day will come, says the Lord, when I
- 2:04will make a New Covenant with the people of Israel
- 2:08and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors
- 2:12when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of
- 2:16Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband
- 2:20loves his wife, says the Lord. But this is the New
- 2:24Covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,
- 2:27says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds,
- 2:31and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God,
- 2:35and they will be my people. And they will not
- 2:39need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their families,
- 2:42saying, You should know the Lord. For everyone,
- 2:46from the least to the greatest, will already know Me,
- 2:49says the Lord. And I will forgive their wickedness and will
- 2:53never again remember their sins. It is the
- 2:57Lord who provides the sun to light the day and the moon and stars
- 3:00to light the night. It is He who stirs the sea into
- 3:04roaring waves. His name is the Lord Almighty,
- 3:08and this is what He says: I am as likely to reject
- 3:12My people Israel as I am to do away with the laws of nature.
- 3:16Just as the heavens cannot be measured and the foundation of
- 3:20the earth cannot be explored, so I will not consider casting
- 3:23them away forever for their sins. I, the Lord,
- 3:27have spoken. The time is coming, says the Lord,
- 3:31when all Jerusalem will be rebuilt for Me. From the Tower of Hananel
- 3:35to the Corner Gate. A measuring line will be stretched out
- 3:39over the hill of Gareb and across to Goah, and the entire area,
- 3:43including the graveyard and ash dump in the valley,
- 3:46and all the fields out to the Kidron Valley on the east as far
- 3:50as the Horse Gate, will be holy to the Lord.
- 3:53The city will never again be captured or destroyed.
- 3:58The following message came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the 10th
- 4:02year of the reign of Zedekiah, King of Judah. This was also the
- 4:0618th year of the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar.
- 4:09Jerusalem was under siege from the Babylonian army,
- 4:13and Jeremiah was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace.
- 4:18King Zedekiah had put him there because he continued to give this prophecy:
- 4:22This is what the Lord says: I am about to hand this city over
- 4:26to the king of Babylon. King Zedekiah will be
- 4:30captured by the Babylonians and taken to the king of Babylon to be
- 4:34judged and sentenced. I will take Zedekiah to Babylon and will
- 4:38deal with him there. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will
- 4:42never succeed. At that time the Lord sent
- 4:46me a message. He said, Your cousin Hananel son of Shallum
- 4:52will come and say to you, Buy my field at Anathoth.
- 4:56By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone
- 4:59else. Then, Just as the Lord had said He would,
- 5:03Hanamel came and visited me in the prison. He said,
- 5:07Buy my field at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.
- 5:11By law, you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone
- 5:14else, so buy it for yourself. Then I knew for sure
- 5:18that the message I had heard was from the Lord.
- 5:21So I bought the field at Anathoth, paying Hanamel 17
- 5:26pieces of silver for it. I signed and sealed the deed
- 5:29of purchase before witnesses, weighed out the silver, and paid him.
- 5:33Then I took the sealed deed and an unsealed copy of
- 5:37the deed, which contained the terms and conditions of the purchase,
- 5:41and I handed them to Baruch son of Neriah and grandson of
- 5:45Mashiach. I did all this in the presence of my cousin Hananel,
- 5:49the witnesses who had signed the deed, and all the men of Judah who were
- 5:53there. Then I said to Baruch, as they all listened, The Lord
- 5:57Almighty, the God of Israel, says, Take both this sealed
- 6:01deed and the unsealed copy and put them into
- 6:04a pottery jar to preserve them for a long time. For the Lord Almighty,
- 6:09the God of Israel, says someday people will again
- 6:13own property here in this place and will buy and sell
- 6:16houses and vineyards and fields. Then,
- 6:20after I had given the papers to Baruch, I prayed to the Lord.
- 6:24O Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and earth by Your great power.
- 6:29Nothing is too hard for You.
- 6:32You are loving and kind to thousands, though children suffer for their parents'
- 6:36sins. You are the great and powerful God, the Lord Almighty.
- 6:41You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You are
- 6:44very aware of the conduct of all people. And You reward
- 6:48them according to their deeds. You performed miraculous signs and wonders
- 6:52in the land of Egypt, things still remembered to this day.
- 6:56And You have continued to do great miracles in Israel and all
- 6:59around the world. You have made Your name very great,
- 7:03as it is today. You brought Israel out of Egypt with mighty
- 7:08signs and wonders, with great power and overwhelming terror.
- 7:11You gave the people of Israel this land that You had promised
- 7:15their ancestors long before. A land flowing with milk and
- 7:19honey. Our ancestors came and conquered it and lived in it, but they
- 7:23refused to obey You or follow Your Law. They have hardly done
- 7:27one thing You told them to do. That is why You have sent this terrible
- 7:31disaster upon them. See how the siege ramps
- 7:35have been built against the city walls. Because of war,
- 7:38famine, and disease, the city has been handed over to the Babylonians,
- 7:42who will conquer it. Everything has happened just as You said it
- 7:45would, and yet, O Sovereign Lord, You have
- 7:49told me to buy the field, paying good money for it before
- 7:53these witnesses, even though the city will soon belong
- 7:57to the Babylonians. Then this message came
- 8:00to Jeremiah from the Lord: I am the Lord,
- 8:03the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything
- 8:07too hard for Me? I will hand this city over to the Babylonians
- 8:11and to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and he will capture
- 8:15it. The Babylonians outside the walls will come in and set
- 8:19fire to the city. They will burn down all these houses where
- 8:23the people caused my fury to rise by offering incense to
- 8:26Baal on the rooftops and by pouring out drink
- 8:31offerings to other gods. Israel and Judah have done nothing but
- 8:34wrong since their earliest days. They have infuriated Me
- 8:38with all their evil deeds, says the Lord. From the time this city
- 8:42was built until now, it has done nothing but anger
- 8:45Me, so I am determined to get rid of it. The sins of Israel
- 8:49and Judah, the sins of the people of Jerusalem, the kings,
- 8:53the officials, the priests, and the prophets stir up My anger.
- 8:57My people have turned their backs on Me and have refused to
- 9:01return. Day after day, Year after year I taught them right
- 9:05from wrong, but they would not listen or obey.
- 9:08They have set up their abominable idols right in My own Temple,
- 9:12defiling it. They have built pagan shrines to
- 9:15Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and there they sacrifice
- 9:19their sons and daughters to Molech. I have never commanded such
- 9:23a horrible deed. It never even crossed My mind to command
- 9:27such a thing. What an incredible evil, causing Judah
- 9:31to sin so greatly! Now I want to say
- 9:35something more about this city. You have been saying, it will fall to the king
- 9:39of Babylon through war, famine, and disease.
- 9:42But this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I
- 9:45will surely bring my people back again from all
- 9:49the countries where I will scatter them in my fury.
- 9:53I will bring them back to this very city, and let
- 9:57them live in peace and safety. They will be My people,
- 10:00and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart
- 10:04and mind to worship Me forever, for their own good and for
- 10:08the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting
- 10:12covenant with them, promising not to stop doing good
- 10:15for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship Me,
- 10:20and they will never leave Me. I will rejoice in doing good
- 10:23to them and will faithfully and wholeheartedly replant
- 10:27them in this land. Just as I have sent all these calamities upon
- 10:32them, so I will do all the good I have promised them.
- 10:35I, the Lord, have spoken. Fields will again
- 10:39be bought and sold in this land about which you now say it
- 10:43has been ravaged by the Babylonians, a land where people and animals have
- 10:48all disappeared. Yes, fields will once again be bought and sold,
- 10:52deeds signed and sealed and witnessed in the land of Benjamin
- 10:56and here in Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah
- 11:00and in the hill country, in the foothills of Judah and in the Negev
- 11:04too. For someday I will restore prosperity
- 11:08to them. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 11:151 Timothy 3:1-16.
- 11:19It is a true saying that if someone wants to be an elder, he desires
- 11:23an honorable responsibility. For an elder must be
- 11:27a man whose life cannot be spoken against. He must be faithful to his
- 11:31wife. He must exhibit self-control, live wisely,
- 11:35and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests
- 11:39in his home and must be able to teach. He must not be a heavy
- 11:43drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, peace-loving,
- 11:47and not one who loves money. He must manage his own family well,
- 11:51with children who respect and obey him. For if a
- 11:55man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of
- 11:59God's church? An elder must not be a new Christian
- 12:02because he might be proud of being chosen so soon,
- 12:06and the devil will use that pride to make him fall. Also,
- 12:09people outside the church must speak well of him so that he will
- 12:13not fall into the devil's trap and be disgraced. In the same
- 12:17way, deacons must be people who are respected and have integrity.
- 12:21They must not be heavy drinkers and must not be greedy for money.
- 12:25They must be committed to the revealed truths of the Christian faith
- 12:29and must live with a clear conscience. Before they are appointed
- 12:34as deacons, they should be given other responsibilities in the church
- 12:37as a test of their character and ability. If they do well,
- 12:41then they may serve as deacons. In the same way, their wives
- 12:45must be respected and must not speak evil of others.
- 12:49They must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they
- 12:53do. A deacon must be faithful to his wife, and he
- 12:57must manage his children and household well. Those who do
- 13:00well as deacons will be rewarded with respect from others and
- 13:04will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus.
- 13:08I am writing these things to you now, even though I hope to be with
- 13:11you soon, so that if I can't come for a while, you will know how
- 13:15people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is
- 13:19the church of the living God, which is the pillar and support
- 13:23of the truth. Without question, this is the great
- 13:26mystery of our faith: Christ appeared in the flesh
- 13:31and was shown to be righteous by the Spirit. He was seen
- 13:34by angels and was announced to the nations. He was believed on
- 13:38in the world and was taken up into heaven.
- 13:44Psalm 88:1-18.
- 13:48O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out
- 13:52to you day and night. Now hear my prayer,
- 13:55listen to my cry, for my life is full of troubles and
- 13:59death draws near. I have been dismissed as one who
- 14:03is dead, like a strong man with no strength left.
- 14:07They have abandoned me to death, and I am as good as dead.
- 14:11I am forgotten, cut off from Your care. You have
- 14:14thrust me down to the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.
- 14:19Your anger lies heavy on me; wave after wave engulfs
- 14:22me. You have caused my friends to loathe me; You have
- 14:27sent them all away. I am in a trap with no way of
- 14:30escape. My eyes are blinded by my tears.
- 14:34Each day I beg for Your help, O Lord. I lift my
- 14:38pleading hands to You for mercy. Of what use to the dead are Your
- 14:42miracles? Do the dead get up and praise You?
- 14:45Can those in the grave declare Your unfailing love?
- 14:49In the place of destruction, can they proclaim Your faithfulness?
- 14:53Can the darkness speak of Your miracles? Can anyone in
- 14:57the land of forgetfulness talk about Your righteousness?
- 15:01O Lord, I cry out to You. I will keep on pleading day
- 15:05by day. O Lord, why do You reject me?
- 15:09Why do You turn Your face away from me? I have been sickly
- 15:12and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless
- 15:17and desperate before Your terrors. Your fierce anger has overwhelmed
- 15:21me. Your terrors have cut me off.
- 15:24They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long.
- 15:28They have encircled me completely. You have taken away my
- 15:32companions and loved ones. Only darkness remains.
- 15:39Proverbs 25:20-22.
- 15:42Singing cheerful songs to a person whose heart is heavy is as
- 15:46bad as stealing someone's jacket in cold weather or rubbing
- 15:50salt in a wound. If your enemies are hungry, give them food
- 15:54to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.
- 15:58You will heap burning coals on their heads, and the Lord will reward
- 16:02you. I want to speak to you today from our reading from Jeremiah chapter
- 16:0631, and I want to zoom in on verse
- 16:1031 to 33 where
- 16:15it is written, the day will come, says the Lord, when I will make a
- 16:18new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant
- 16:23will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them
- 16:27by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke
- 16:31that covenant, though I loved them as a husband
- 16:35loves his wife, says the Lord. But this is the new covenant
- 16:39I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord.
- 16:43I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them
- 16:47on their hearts. I will be their God and they
- 16:51will be my people. So I want to talk to you today a
- 16:55little bit about the Old Covenant or the First Covenant that
- 16:59was made at Mount Sinai with Moses when he brought the Ten Commandments down
- 17:02to the people and this New Covenant that is spoken of here
- 17:06in Jeremiah 31:31. Under the
- 17:10First Covenant, the one from Moses,
- 17:14All who were ethnically descended from the family of
- 17:18Jacob— he had the 12 sons which became the
- 17:2212 tribes— they were considered to be part of God's
- 17:26family. So it's basically Jews only.
- 17:30The problem with this is that they broke this covenant.
- 17:34They were unfaithful. And so now God is inaugurating,
- 17:40bringing in a New Covenant. And in this New Covenant,
- 17:44all who put their faith in Christ are now members of God's
- 17:48family. So the rules for how to become part of God's
- 17:53family have changed. You did not have to
- 17:56be ethnically descended from Jacob,
- 18:00from Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.
- 18:04Membership in God's family now is determined by our faith
- 18:07in Jesus Christ. It's not based upon our ancestry.
- 18:14It's Jew or Gentile. Anybody is now invited
- 18:21to be a part of God's family. It's not just based upon ethnicity.
- 18:26And so when a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ
- 18:30and they repent of their sin, they become part of membership
- 18:35in God's family. And so in the
- 18:38Old Covenant, this was given to the nation in the Kingdom of Israel,
- 18:43and it did not include the Gentiles. But in the New Covenant,
- 18:47membership into God's family is open to all people
- 18:51groups, all tribes, all nations. It's not
- 18:55about ethnicity. It's about faith. It's not about whether you're
- 19:00Jewish or not Jewish.
- 19:04So it's about having a new heart. In the
- 19:07Old Covenant, the law was inscribed on 2
- 19:11stone tablets, and the people under Moses did all they could
- 19:16to be obedient to it, but they fall— they failed.
- 19:19They were not able to keep the law, the laws of God.
- 19:23It was based upon works and based upon performance.
- 19:28But in the New Covenant, it's based upon faith, faith in Jesus Christ.
- 19:33And now you have a new heart. When you repent and
- 19:37you ask Christ into your heart, you get a new heart.
- 19:41And now you're indwelled by the Holy Spirit. And by the Holy Spirit,
- 19:46you follow the commands of Christ and you follow
- 19:50the Word of God because now His Spirit is energizing you.
- 19:56So it's so important to walk in—
- 19:59that you begin in faith and you continue to walk in faith.
- 20:05That you don't fall into religion or works
- 20:08or performance. That our head is not Moses.
- 20:13Our head is Jesus Christ. He is our head, and we
- 20:17are led by the Holy Spirit. So all
- 20:21the different things that are talked about in the Old Testament
- 20:25about the feasts, Passover and
- 20:30Day of Atonement and Feast of Tabernacles,
- 20:33Christians optionally can participate in those
- 20:37things, but they are not required.
- 20:40All of those things that were outlined, the food laws and the feasts
- 20:44and all of that, That was written to a particular audience. It was written
- 20:48to— those commands were given to the children of Israel.
- 20:53And we are not Jews. We are Gentiles.
- 20:57It was written for them, and it was
- 21:01under the Old Covenant. But in the New Covenant, we are not
- 21:05required to keep Old Covenant laws like
- 21:09animal sacrifices, Levitical priesthood, eating kosher,
- 21:12keeping the Sabbath and feasts. It is not required in
- 21:16the New Covenant. The most important thing is
- 21:20that we have a new heart,
- 21:24that in the New Covenant when we repent,
- 21:28God takes out our heart of stone and He gives us a heart of flesh,
- 21:32and He begins to write His Word upon our heart.
- 21:36That is what is most important.
- 21:40Have a blessed day and we'll see you tomorrow.
