- 0:07The California Angels faced the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 1st, 1973 for a spring training game at Dodger Stadium.
- 0:14California was coming off another average year in 1972, never having been able to win more than 86 games during their first 12 years in the league.
- 0:22They were managed by Bobby Winkles in his first year with the Angels.
- 0:26Los Angeles was managed by Walt Alston in his 20th year as skipper of the Dodgers.
- 0:30This audio recording is from the Angels Radio broadcast featuring announcers Don Drysdale, Dick Engberg, and Dick Nelson.
- 0:37Back at Dodger Stadium, a very pleasant good afternoon to everybody.
- 0:42Don Drysdale, Dick Engberg, and Dick Nelson. Today's game the third and rubber game between the California Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 0:50It'll be right-hander Nolan Ryan who continues to warm up down in the Angel bullpen. Ryan this spring making his sixth appearance has a record of two wins, three losses.
- 0:59He's pitched 20 innings, given up 17 hits, 14 runs, 11 earned runs. He's walked 27, struck out 18, and has an earned run average of 4.95.
- 1:09For the Los Angeles Dodgers, they'll send left-hander Tommy John who has now finished his warm-up tosses and is in the Dodger dugout.
- 1:17John this spring is making his third appearance, his record 0-1 this spring. The Dodgers now take the field.
- 1:23He's pitched six innings, given up 10 hits, four runs, four earned runs, three based on balls, two strikeouts, and an earned run average of even six.
- 1:32We'll have the starting lineups in just a moment. Before that, we'd like to remind you that Ariel Fireworks, along with Nolan Ryan pitching pregame music by the Cavaliers youth band, and the release of 1,000 balloons.
- 1:44They all add up to the American League opener at Anaheim Stadium on Friday night, April 6.
- 1:49It's the new angels against the Kansas City Royals, and you'll want to be a part of all the fun.
- 1:55So make your plans now for opening night at the Big A, Friday, April 6.
- 1:59Tickets on sale at the Anaheim Stadium box office, which is open daily from 9 to 5.30.
- 2:04Also at Mutual and Liberty agencies, and at United California banks in Orange Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
- 2:12Now our national anthem.
- 2:42Oh
- 3:12Oh
- 3:28First of all, the starting lineup for the visiting California Angels leading off and playing third base will be Bill Grabankiewicz batting second.
- 3:37And at shortstop will be Bobby Valentine playing center field and hitting third will be Veda Pinson.
- 3:45Hitting fourth, our pregame guest today and playing left field will be Doug Howard batting fifth.
- 3:51And at first base, Jim Spencer playing right field and hitting sixth will be Lee Stanton.
- 3:58Sandy Alomar will hit seventh and he'll play second base batting eighth and doing the catching this afternoon, John Stevenson.
- 4:07And the starting pitcher for the California Angels, right hander and opening day pitcher, Nolan Ryan.
- 4:14For the Los Angeles Dodgers leading off and playing second base will be Dave Lopes batting second.
- 4:22And in left field, Von Joshua playing first base and hitting third will be Billy Buckner batting fourth.
- 4:30And in center field, the captain Willie Davis playing right field at a big night last night with a home run, a double and a single hitting fifth Willie Crawford.
- 4:39Batting sixth and the first time that we've seen this man, Ken McMullen playing third base batting seventh.
- 4:45And during the catching will be Steve Yeager playing shortstop and hitting eighth, Bill Russell and the starting pitcher today for the Los Angeles Dodgers left hander, Tommy John.
- 4:55As Billy Grabarkiewicz gets ready to stand in, here's Dick Enberg.
- 4:59Thank you Don, good afternoon everybody. Beautiful sunny day but the wind is going to make it most interesting on all fly balls.
- 5:05The first pitch of the game is a curve ball low. The left hander, John, from Terre Haute, Indiana.
- 5:09Last year with the Dodgers, 1-11, lost only five. Working quickly, kicks and here it comes.
- 5:15Low, 2-0, Steve Yeager behind the plate. The infield for the Dodgers, McMullen, Russell, Lopes and Buckner with Joshua on left, Davis in center, Willie Crawford in right field.
- 5:26The hills were there. Flowers beyond the center field fence providing a beautiful backdrop to this lovely setting.
- 5:33The pitch, check swing and it's low, 3-0. Purple flowers on the hillside immediately behind the flags in center field and then off in the distance the rugged peaks and the snow capped mountains.
- 5:45The pitch, low ball four and on four pitches Grabarkiewicz opens the game with a walk.
- 5:51And just as though we had many Dodger fans down at Anaheim Stadium for the game's Friday night and Saturday night. So do we have some angel fans here today?
- 6:00Bobby Valentine batting.258 steps in. Bobby playing shortstop this afternoon.
- 6:06The wind at the moment, always blowing 20-25 miles an hour toward the right field corner.
- 6:11It will be very tough for the right-handed hitters to hit the ball with any distance at all the left.
- 6:17In fact, Joshua now moving in even closer. He's playing pretty shallow left field for a right-handed hitter and a big swirl of dust is raised up behind home plate.
- 6:24A strike at the knees and Valentine, no way he could have hit that one. That big dust storm moving through the home plate area just as John delivered the ball.
- 6:37Cyclonic winds in this horseshoe shaped stadium.
- 6:43Dick, as we were talking in the press room earlier before the game, why this is the windiest day I have ever seen at Dodger Stadium. Never before have I ever seen wind like this.
- 6:52And again Valentine forced the back out of the batter's box as another swirling wind raises dust up around home plate.
- 7:00It was a circus during batting practice. The ball hit in the air and they'd start in one field and end in another.
- 7:08John goes to first base. Krobarkowicz back easily. Johnny Roseborough touching it first and Saldy Parker down a third.
- 7:15The infielders especially will have to be alert on balls that normally would be routine flies to the outfield.
- 7:20There goes Krobarkowicz, the curveball inside. Yeager's throw, not in time. Krobarkowicz steals second base.
- 7:27Grabby with a good jump. The pitch was a curveball inside.
- 7:33The counterball and a strike to Bobby Valentine.
- 7:38Krobarkowicz with his second stolen base to the spring.
- 7:42So the Angels in the first inning with a chance to get in front.
- 7:50John, flanky left-hander, looks back at second. Here's the pitch. Valentine looks at the ball low, two and one.
- 7:57John has worked in only two games this spring, official game. Pitch six innings allowed four runs and ten hits.
- 8:03So based upon that spring performance, John does not appear to be that ready to start the season.
- 8:09He's six-three, 185 pounds. Grabby with a good lead at second base.
- 8:13The two-one delivery, low, three balls and a strike. John, a low ball pitcher, his ball sinks well.
- 8:19He is much like Clyde Wright, however, he won't overpower you with his stuff. He has to hit the corners, pick his spots.
- 8:26Last year fine ERA, 2.89.
- 8:31Krobarkowicz away from second base. Bobby Valentine up first inning going up.
- 8:37Three balls and a strike. John has his sign. The pitch, line foul into the lower deck down the right-field line.
- 8:45Final score, Boston defeated Detroit today, six to five. Marty Patton getting the win over Joe Nicrow.
- 8:54The Dodgers go to Arizona for games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Angels back to Palm Springs tonight.
- 9:01The pitch, swung on line drive, slight down the right-field line, but it's foul as it lands in the warning track and bounce up into the empty seats.
- 9:08The crowd, tough to read. The Blakers in left field, almost completely packed.
- 9:13And most of the general admission seats in the fourth deck high above home plate are full. We would say crowd 15 to 20,000.
- 9:25Three balls, two strikes. The pitch by John. Valentine takes it in the dirt, ball four.
- 9:32That is not a good sign when a control pitcher walks the first two men that he faces in a bowl game.
- 9:37Center fielder Vada Pinson up. Vada with eight hits and 42 advanced this spring.
- 9:43At Tucson today, the Cleveland Indians shut out San Diego two to nothing.
- 9:49Steve Dunning getting the win over Clay Kirby. The Indians six hits, the Padres seven, but Cleveland wins it two to nothing.
- 9:58That's good news for Cleveland fans. Dunning pitches a strong game. Infield looking for two. The pitch, bunted up the third base line, foul.
- 10:04And Yeager, near the fungo circle on the third base line, picks up the ball.
- 10:09Brevarkowitz back to second base and Valentine to first.
- 10:16Tomorrow in Palm Springs, the Angels will experiment with the yellow baseballs as they meet the world champion Oakland A's.
- 10:22It'll be Clyde Wright on the mound for the Californians. Our broadcast time, 1240 Pacific Standard Time.
- 10:28Time called, Yeager goes halfway to the mound to talk to Tommy John.
- 10:35Give you a strange feeling, Don Drysdale, to be sitting in this spot rather than out in that center circle in Dodger Stadium?
- 10:41Well, it really does, Doug. It's the first time that I've had a chance to broadcast from Dodger Stadium, although I have been up in the press area many times before.
- 10:48But I have to say that this is kind of an eerie feeling, you might say.
- 10:53If any memories come to mind, share them with us.
- 10:57One strike to count on Pinson. Runners at first and second.
- 11:00And a little pick-off move in this case where Russell, the shortstop, ducks behind Brevarkowitz and then breaks for third.
- 11:08Then they hope that the runner will take the bait and follow him, and then a second baseman loves breaking to the back sharply, but Brevarkowitz was alert.
- 11:14No play. One strike pitch. Down low with a curveball, one and one, and Pinson again was going to bunt.
- 11:22The Angels trying to get a run on the board here in the first inning.
- 11:26After walks to Brevarkowitz and Valentine. No one out. Doug Howard on deck.
- 11:33Here's the pitch. Pinson squares and takes it low. The throw by Yeager to second base and back head first goes Brevarkowitz ahead of the tag by Russell.
- 11:43Dodger Stadium right now, just like the Big A down in Anaheim, they brought in their fences here.
- 11:49And it's quite noticeable being up here. It looks a little bit smaller.
- 11:543.95 now to center field, 3.85 in the alleys, 3.70 behind the right and left fielder. The pitch bunted toward third. John has to play at third and he gets Brevarkowitz.
- 12:05So they sacrifice the iltas. John makes the play easily. Pinson did not hit the ball toward third base. He bunted it sharply, but John had to move only a couple of steps off the hill to glove it and go on to third to McMullen for the fourth.
- 12:21Brevarkowitz erased 1-5. Valentine to second base. Pinson at first. One out and here's left fielder Doug Howard batting 2.70.
- 12:32Ten hits, 37 at bats. Doug Waring number four in his back. In field set for two. John at the belt to pitch. Curve ball, bends at the ease, strike call.
- 12:47John now 29 years old. 0-1 on the spring. The runner goes. The pitch is inside the throw by Yeagers to second base and they got Pinson halfway. Come up and now Pinson gets in there.
- 13:04On the double steal, Valentine was running, but Pinson didn't pick it up quickly at all. Valentine had third base stolen so easily that Yeager didn't throw there, but he saw that Pinson was very late breaking from first, so Yeagers throw into second base.
- 13:19And Lopes covering. The ball bounded to him and he was about 8, 9 feet in back of the bag and Pinson was able to streak in on the blind side. Lopes didn't know he was coming, so a double steal works. Howard is jammed and fouls it on the ground pass for Dodger Dugout.
- 13:36You've got to say right there that was a very heads up play by the young catcher with the Dodger, Steve Yeager. He saw that he had no chance for Valentine, but he did pick up Pinson very quickly and had Lopes maybe been a little bit more awake on the play, why they would have had Pinson trapped between first and second.
- 13:52A ball and two strikes now to Howard. The pitch. Kerrball swung on and missed and one of the few times all spring, Howard strikes out and it's a spot where you want him to make contact with a runner at third and only one out. That's only the third time in some 50th bats that Howard has struck out.
- 14:08The runners hit second and third and Jim Spencer is the batter.
- 14:12John of course knows the Angels well.
- 14:15Well with the whites actually won 13 and lost 13 against the Angels, but his ERA was under two again. Kerrball, Luke Fowle out of play.
- 14:23Back into the lower deck down the left field line.
- 14:27So two walks and three stolen bases by the Angels here in the first inning.
- 14:32But nothing to show for it yet. Two outs. Valentine down the line from third, Pinson away from second from the wind up Johns. Fitzkerrball tapped up the first base line. It is a foul ball. Foul ball just missed hitting the cone of the bag.
- 14:44Gloved by Buckner and he had the easy out had it been ruled fair by first base umpire Don Deckinger.
- 14:50So back to the plate comes Jim Spencer.
- 14:54Doug Rowe getting in some work in the Dodger bullpen.
- 14:58Out in the left field corner.
- 15:02Two strikes on Spencer. Tom John trying to work out of this first inning. The outfield playing Spencer.
- 15:09Not straight away. Davis a couple of steps into right center but John was hugging the line and left.
- 15:14The pitch. Kerr outside. One and two.
- 15:19John getting a lot of break on that curve. Sometimes when the wind is blowing in as strong as it is it will flatten out the curve.
- 15:25John getting good action on it. The one two pitch. Inside with a fastball and the count runs even. Two two.
- 15:33Lee Stanton on deck.
- 15:39The wind is blowing very briskly. It's kind of shredded the California state flag out in center field.
- 15:45Curve ball low. It's three and two.
- 15:48Spencer with a full count. Valentine claps his hands down a third base encouraging Spencer to get a base hit.
- 15:54Henson ready to roll from second base.
- 15:58Yeager down to flash out the sign. John picks the ball out of his glove.
- 16:04Wines the three two pitch. Curve ball line drive center field. Base hit. Valentine scores. Here comes Henson.
- 16:09Here comes Davis. His throw to the plate. It's cut off. Throw to second base. No throw.
- 16:13Buckner falls down as he tries to plant himself and fired a second.
- 16:18And the Angels lead two nothing on a line single to center by Jim Spencer.
- 16:24Number 36. Right fielder. Spencer with his fifth and sixth RBI's of the spring.
- 16:31Valentine scoring from third. Henson from second base. Davis' throw would not have been in time to get Henson so
- 16:37Buckner tried to cut it off but if he did so and tried to plant himself his feet slipped out from beneath him.
- 16:43Stanton fouls it back on the ground.
- 16:45Spencer with a throw coming to the plate. Advancing to second. I believe Buckner would have gotten him had he been able to
- 16:51keep his feet but when he fell to the ground he had to just eat the ball.
- 16:55So Spencer at second base. Two outs. Two nothing Angels. John with a count one strike. Stanton looks at way outside. One and one.
- 17:04You get the feeling with the wind conditions we're going to have a high scoring ball game today.
- 17:11We haven't had that first high pop up yet and I think all the infielders hoping they won't be the first one.
- 17:16There's that change upstairs two and one. When you talk about wind conditions you just can't overlook Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 17:23When that wind blows in or when it blows out it is just unbelievable what that wind can do with a ball.
- 17:30Another place. Candlestick. Two one pitch. Outside three and one. And it has to bother the control of the pitcher too.
- 17:37It's very hard on a pitcher and of course Tommy John here this afternoon has not thrown that much this spring.
- 17:43As Jim Brewer John had surgery on his elbow also so he's been testing that out too.
- 17:49The three one delivery. Swung on and missed. A big cut by Stanton.
- 17:53Boy the pitchers have to love it when you take a big swing today.
- 17:57Because the odds on throwing hitting a home run are very slim. If it happens it would happen to right field where you would get a little boost with the wind.
- 18:04But the left field I don't think King Kong could hit one out today.
- 18:08Foul back by Stanton. Three and two the pitch.
- 18:10Here's the case right here with a left handed pitcher and the wind blowing so hard from the left field in towards the first base side.
- 18:17Left handed pitcher right handed hitter just throw that change up up there and let them take their best shot to left field.
- 18:22Because like you say I don't believe they're going to hit it out of here.
- 18:25Three and two. Spencer at second. The pitch to Stanton. Low ball four.
- 18:29And that's the third walk given up by John in this first inning.
- 18:35First and second occupied. Two outs and the hitter Sandy Alomar batting right handed against the left handed John.
- 18:41Alomar hitting three forty four this spring as the eleven base hits.
- 18:50Spencer with a two run single out at second base. Stanton leads away from first.
- 18:54The infield back. The outfield. Just medium depth for Sandy.
- 18:58Here's the pitch. Curve hit the outside corner. Strike called Alomar.
- 19:12Tommy John checks the runners and here's the pitch. Alomar swings and taps it foul.
- 19:16Trickles toward the Dodger dugout and rolls on into the home with the Dodgers.
- 19:24When you were here at the Dodger Don and were not well as a starting pitcher did you ever go in the bullpen during the course of an off day.
- 19:32Oh I used to go down there and sit and talk with them. You got to keep those guys happy you know.
- 19:36They're your buddies. That's right. Outside one and two.
- 19:39Well then when you weren't in the bullpen did you have a particular spot on the dugout where you sat.
- 19:43Was there a place that was kind of you know acknowledges your spot or do you move around.
- 19:48Well we'd move around quite a bit. Sometimes you'd be setting up by the by the where the bats are towards the home plate side of the dugout.
- 19:56Fouled again by Alomar one and two.
- 19:58And of course other times while Wal Olson we always carried two trainers with with the ballclub.
- 20:04Wayne Anderson was more or less in charge of all the pitchers working on their arms.
- 20:08And Walt in bad weather in Candlestick Park in particular he would never have you go out.
- 20:13He said no need to come out here and sit around in the wind.
- 20:15But we'd go back in the clubhouse and Wayne had to work on our arms.
- 20:18One to pitch outside with a breaking ball two and two.
- 20:23So you go down in the bullpen now and they just kind of make rub their necks a little bit those relief pitchers.
- 20:28Oh yeah especially the night before you pitch.
- 20:32Want to make sure that they all get a good night's sleep and feel good tomorrow.
- 20:37Two balls two strikes two outs two on the pitch outside with a fastball and three balls two strikes.
- 20:43The runners will be going.
- 20:46John Stevenson would be next as Tommy John having a rough first inning.
- 20:50Nolan Ryan this is not good for him either.
- 20:53It's been a long time since he threw his last warm up pitch.
- 20:56He's had to sit down in that cold dugout for a matter now of almost 30 minutes since he finished warming up.
- 21:02John checks the runners and turns but no throw to second base.
- 21:07Spencer back at second. Stanton ready to roll from first base.
- 21:10Alomar waiting full count.
- 21:12Here's the pitch swung on a fly ball to right field.
- 21:15That goes the right field.
- 21:16Crawford still going back and he makes the catch and the wind took care of that one.
- 21:20Alomar hit it all the way to the warning track in right field.
- 21:23So if that's an indication the ball will carry very well to right but not a lick toward left field.
- 21:29So the angels are out in the first inning.
- 21:31They get two runs on one hit.
- 21:33No errors and two men left.
- 21:34They stole three bases in the first inning.
- 21:36And after a half inning the angels too the Dodgers are coming to bat.
- 21:41You know people have been putting that Budweiser label on things for a long time.
- 21:54But not as long as we've been putting things on the Budweiser label.
- 21:58This label has been listing ingredients since 1876.
- 22:01And the Budweiser people have been saying read the label for an awful long time.
- 22:06Choices tops rice and best barley malt.
- 22:25Yep brewing beer right does make a difference.
- 22:35You've said it all.
- 22:49Right hander Nolan Ryan the angel starting pitcher when the California club opens the 1973 season Friday night at Anaheim Stadium.
- 22:57Ryan gets to go today on this windy Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
- 23:01Dave Lopes, Von Joshua and Bill Buckner we would guess that the program sales will be very good here at Dodger Stadium for the first few weeks of the season because there are so many new names.
- 23:14Many of the familiar Dodger stars have left in the course of just one year by trade by retirement.
- 23:23What have you.
- 23:24Ryan facing Lopes hitting 273.
- 23:28The pitch fastball high ball one.
- 23:30I have a feeling that Ryan may rely more on his fastball today.
- 23:33He told us that he was concerned that the curve ball would flatten out in this win.
- 23:38The pitch to the right handed hitter all the way to the screen to a.
- 23:42The John walk three men in the first inning and Ryan begins by throwing two pitches far out of the strike zone.
- 23:50Brian on the spring.
- 23:51This is his sixth game.
- 23:53He's pitched 21 innings allowed nine runs and 19 hits.
- 23:57He's walked nine was cut down that walk ratio.
- 24:00He struck out 15.
- 24:01That also is down from last year.
- 24:03The pitch high and inside three and oh and Lopes comes bounding out of the batter's by three and oh and Ryan hasn't come close to throwing a strike yet.
- 24:14Except his target from John Stevenson.
- 24:16Here's the pitch high ball for John walk the leadoff man.
- 24:20Robocos on four pitches so does Nolan leadoff hitter Davy Lopes.
- 24:27Here's on Joshua having a good spring hitting 318.
- 24:31It's not 10 10 runs.
- 24:35Doctors in their home wide uniforms with blue numerals blue helmets blue socks and a red numeral on the front of the shirt.
- 24:42Angels on their road grades.
- 24:45Ryan rubbing up a new baseball John Stevenson changing catcher's mittens.
- 24:51He's walked down toward the angel dugout in the way he's most needed.
- 24:55Might be that that's what I want he says and then he pointed it to say go back in the clubhouse for my other glove.
- 25:03Stevenson back to home plate.
- 25:04Ryan has walked Dave Lopes who is an outstanding runner.
- 25:07Good base dealer.
- 25:09Robocos in on the grass at third base.
- 25:12Alomar and Valentine looking for two up the middle of the pitch curve high.
- 25:16That's five in a row missed by Nolan Ryan.
- 25:23Bill Buckner on deck.
- 25:26The pitch there's a strike fastball letter high outside corner one and one to Von Joshua.
- 25:33I feel playing him around toward left.
- 25:37The daughter first and Lopes is back.
- 25:39Ryan with a quick throw they're hoping to catch Lopes walking away from the bag with his head down.
- 25:44Get those feet crossed.
- 25:46Here it comes.
- 25:48Strike two called fastball letter high.
- 25:51Ryan has been high on all of his pitches but able to get those last two down across the letters for called strikes one into the count.
- 26:01Angels giving Joshua all of the right field corner.
- 26:05Stanton playing well well off the line.
- 26:08Throw to first and back is Lopes.
- 26:14The Angels the defending champions in this freeway series and this is the Corker-Rober match in 1973.
- 26:20Overall the Angels have won nine times the Dodgers six.
- 26:30Ryan with a count of all and two strikes.
- 26:33Joshua takes his time plants himself in the batter's box.
- 26:36He said so is Ryan the pitch swung on Luke foul out of play that went back into the second deck behind the Dodger dugout.
- 26:44As dugouts go down in the National League was there one that the players will dislike most.
- 26:49I would have to say it was a one an old Connie Max Stadium because you walk down into the dugout but the roof was not very high and you had to always duck to get down in there.
- 26:59The pitch curveball tapped a third.
- 27:01Grabakowitz has it on one hop to throw to first and plenty of time and that's the first out brings up first baseman Bill Buckner Lopes advancing to second place based on the play.
- 27:11Buckner hitting 235.
- 27:13Connie Max Stadium you had to kind of get the door back just to get into the hole.
- 27:17Well you had to really bend over as you walk down the two stairs going into the dugout.
- 27:22Number one it was cement and sometimes your spikes would slip but then you'd sit there and you get kind of excited something had happened.
- 27:28You'd go to jump up and there was many guys that cracked their head on that dugout.
- 27:33I suppose this is about as big and as comfortable as any in the National League or at least when it was built.
- 27:37That was the case.
- 27:38Buckner squares around the pitchers all the way to the screen.
- 27:41Lopes takes third.
- 27:42Stevenson coming all the way back to the screen and you have to go a long distance to get a ball that's by you.
- 27:48So Lopes on the wild pitch is at third.
- 27:51So both pitchers were their troubles in the first inning.
- 27:54John giving up two runs on men that he had walked and now a walk, a ground out and a wild pitch and Lopes in position to score with only one out.
- 28:04One ball account on Bill Buckner.
- 28:09The Mets and Yankees in overtime today.
- 28:11They're tied at three after nine innings.
- 28:13Drive into right center field.
- 28:15Hit well.
- 28:16Back goes Pinson still going back.
- 28:17He reaches up and makes the catch.
- 28:19Bagging a third is Lopes.
- 28:21He scores but what a play by Pinson.
- 28:23Considering the win, that is a marvelous effort.
- 28:34Well the other day when we had Veda on the warm up show, I asked him what position that he preferred.
- 28:42He said, well I've got to really tell you.
- 28:44He said I broke in as a center fielder and he says that's the one that I like.
- 28:47And right there I'll tell you it was one of the fine catches you'll want to see.
- 28:51Ex efficient game or regular season anywhere.
- 28:54And you had to wonder what the wind was going to do to the ball.
- 28:57Curve ball upstairs to Willie Davis and it just kept carrying and Pinson breaking at the crack of the bat.
- 29:02Sprinting to the three ninety five sign and on the dead run reaching up over his head to glove it.
- 29:09The one oh pitch to Davis.
- 29:11Curve on the inside edge one and one.
- 29:12So the left handed hitters or at least balls hit to center field and right field carrying much better than you would anticipate.
- 29:19We have not seen one hit toward left as yet.
- 29:21The pitch high fly ball to left center field.
- 29:24That goes Pinson again.
- 29:25He's under it now.
- 29:26Makes the catch.
- 29:27You can see the wind kill that drive.
- 29:30The Dodgers get a run without a hit.
- 29:32No one left and after one inning the Angels two.
- 29:35The Dodgers one.
- 29:37If you don't fly very often chances are you don't know one airline from another.
- 29:41But if you talk to an experienced flier chances are he'll tell you about Continental because he's probably flown Continental more than just once.
- 29:48You know people remember Continental because Continental has pride and that pride gets things done.
- 29:54Things that keep Continental's passengers happy and keep them coming back.
- 29:57And it's been that way for a long time.
- 29:59Continental passengers were the very first to enjoy hot meals and coach the first to be offered an economy class fair and adult stand by there.
- 30:08And of course innovations are important but there's another aspect of Continental's pride you'll like just as much.
- 30:14It's an attitude, a feeling, a willingness to do those little extras for you to make sure everything is just right and it really works.
- 30:22So the next time you're going somewhere Continental goes.
- 30:25Fly with them and see how pride gets things done for you.
- 30:29Continental Airlines.
- 30:31The proud bird with a golden tail.
- 30:36From Dodger Stadium on a windy Sunday.
- 30:39The scores the Angels two.
- 30:40The Dodgers one as we go to the top of the second inning.
- 30:43And the wind is expected to continue I guess tomorrow so down in Angel Stadium in Palm Springs where we have no protection it's going to be interesting.
- 30:50In fact, Dick Nelson is not going to sleep tonight.
- 30:53Don he is just show what kind of a great guy he is as producer engineer.
- 30:57He is going to chip score books out of stones so that we won't have to chase our jeeps around tomorrow.
- 31:05I'll tell you I'm going to go out in the desert and look for some rocks that will fit in my pocket.
- 31:09I think it's like it is here in Palm Springs. We're in for trouble.
- 31:13You hear the story about the guy at Sky Harbor Airport down in Phoenix.
- 31:16They've they found him out on one of the runways stark naked running around trying to fly the pitch to Stevenson is inside.
- 31:23I'm not kidding you. They found him out there and they didn't even arrest him for indecent exposure.
- 31:27Some violation the anti flying rule.
- 31:31The pitch by John Stevenson checks in it's low to know.
- 31:34Sounds like an old pitcher or a broadcaster.
- 31:39Listen we might be flying if we've got that wind catches our clothes just right tomorrow.
- 31:44Inside three and out of the catcher John Stevenson and John kind of stares up at the sky.
- 31:49I have to say I can't quite get my readings in this wind.
- 31:53Tommy John into the wind up the pitch.
- 31:56He catches the inside corner three and one.
- 31:59Chris Pellicota is a very deliberate umpire.
- 32:01He takes a good look at it and a little pause and he signals straight.
- 32:04The pitch that's inside and Stevenson leads off the second inning with a walk.
- 32:08That's the third walk from fourth walk now from Tommy John.
- 32:12Let's pause for station identification from Dodger Stadium.
- 32:15This is the Angels radio network.
- 32:17You're listening to KXTC 92.3 Glendale Phoenix Arizona.
- 32:21Transmitting from the tower with the power top the hotel Westward Ho in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
- 32:27Pitcher Nolan Ryan out the Dodger infield looking for the sacrifice.
- 32:38Ryan is one for two this spring.
- 32:40He squares and takes it on the corner strike called.
- 32:43Buckner charging from first and Ken McMullen from third.
- 32:47Now what Billy Buckner now every time the Dodgers will have the first baseman go over and tell their pitcher.
- 32:52He'll tell them that I'm going to go all the way so don't look too long.
- 32:58This time apparently told him that I give it a little look there.
- 33:01I'm going to bluff coming in and they will get Stevenson wandering too far away.
- 33:04That's exactly right.
- 33:05They'll always let the pitcher know whether they're coming or whether they're going to bluff and go back.
- 33:09So you can work your move accordingly.
- 33:15John looks at Stevenson Ryan squares.
- 33:17Bunch it foul up over the head of umpire Chris Pellicota.
- 33:21Final score Minnesota defeated Houston in Houston three to two today.
- 33:27Bill Hands getting the win for the twins against Don Wilson.
- 33:33So hands acquired from the Chicago Cubs goes the distance apparently he's pitched well this spring and that's one of the reasons why they let Jim Perry go to Detroit.
- 33:41Ryan scoring and takes strike three called a big rainbow curve and Nolan fooled on the pitch.
- 33:46He was going to bunt but take strike three this second strike out for Tommy John.
- 33:51Here's leadoff hitter Bill Grabakowicz.
- 33:52He walked and was forced in the first inning.
- 33:57The angels two runs on one hit.
- 34:00They've had four walks from John.
- 34:02Dodgers one run no hits as the man that Ryan walked eventually scored.
- 34:06There's a line drive backhand by Lovesey throws the first double play.
- 34:15You can see the wind curl that line drive right back to the second baseman.
- 34:20It started up the middle but as Lovesey broke to his right the wind hated the flight right to the leather.
- 34:26He made a fine backhanded catch and then the off balance lob back to first base and Stevenson halfway between first and second could not get back.
- 34:35So Grabakowicz lines into a four three double play and that's the second inning for the angels.
- 34:41No runs no hits and no left and after one and a half the angels two the Dodgers one.
- 34:46Seventy three Chevelle by Chevrolet.
- 34:49It looks different because it is different.
- 34:52Different outside with pillared hard top design that we call colonnade styling.
- 34:57Increased visibility area double panel roof for strength and quiet and a new hydraulic front bumper system.
- 35:04Seventy three Chevelle by Chevrolet.
- 35:06Different in the smooth way it rides and handles with an improved suspension a wider stance front disc brakes.
- 35:14Seventy three Chevelle by Chevrolet.
- 35:17Different inside with a handsome new interior that features full foam cushion seats and more backseat legroom than any Chevelle before.
- 35:26The 73 Chevelles by Chevrolet.
- 35:29Chevelle Malibu and the new top of the line Chevelle Laguna.
- 35:33They look different because they are different.
- 35:36Get the message?
- 35:38Chevrolet, Chevrolet.
- 35:48Wully Crawford the batter.
- 35:49The Dodgers up bottom of the second inning.
- 35:51Crawford with three hits last night.
- 35:53The pitch by Ryan.
- 35:55Curve high ball one.
- 35:56Crawford with a shot at the Fresco Thompson Award for the most valuable player in the series.
- 36:01That's still up for grabs.
- 36:03You'd have to figure with both the starting pitchers today giving up a run already that Al Downing has all but won the Lefty Phillips Award as the best pitcher in the series with his perfect seven in the third innings last night before the Angels finally got a run.
- 36:15Another breaking ball that's high and outside.
- 36:17Ryan unable to get his pitches down.
- 36:20The 2-0 pitch to Crawford.
- 36:23High again.
- 36:24Three and 0.
- 36:25A fast ball.
- 36:26Ken McMullin on deck and then Steve Yeager to bat for the Dodgers in the second inning.
- 36:30Could have won Angels lead.
- 36:33Ryan's 3-0 pitch.
- 36:35There's the strike.
- 36:36Burrows that one over the inside edge.
- 36:40Crawford checks with third base coach Tommy Lasorda to see if he's swinging three and one.
- 36:44Jim Gilliam down at first base for Los Angeles.
- 36:47The pitch.
- 36:48Strike.
- 36:49Fast ball.
- 36:50Whipped that one over the outside corner.
- 36:53I feel playing Crawford toward left center.
- 36:58The wind and the 3-2 pitch.
- 37:00Line foul out of play.
- 37:02Slicing back into the lower deck down in the left field corner.
- 37:06But just as that pitch was delivered, a gust of wind hits the right side of the infield
- 37:10and little Sandy Alomar was moved about 10 feet to his left.
- 37:15Sandy trying to grab for his hat and keep his feet on the ground.
- 37:19He was being moved.
- 37:21Three and through the count.
- 37:27Ryan's pitch.
- 37:28Just missed inside and Crawford walks.
- 37:31Now the record is intact.
- 37:34The four men that have led off an inning thus far have all been walked.
- 37:40Ken McMullen batting 241 this spring.
- 37:43Seven hits and 29 at bats.
- 37:44Bothered by a bad back.
- 37:46He's been used only as a pinch hitter in this series but starts today.
- 37:53Strong right-handed hitter.
- 37:54The pitch by Ryan.
- 37:55Upstairs but the strike.
- 37:56A fellow could have said that when he caught the letters.
- 38:00Just watching and listening to what Doug Howard said about Ken Berry helping him.
- 38:04Ken down in the angel dugout now moving him a little bit to the left.
- 38:07Curve foul back.
- 38:10And doing some more now and Howard moving a couple more steps to his left.
- 38:17I think the right fielder is going to be surprised at how the ball is carrying.
- 38:20Stanton is playing quite shallow in right.
- 38:24Fence in fairly shallow in right center.
- 38:26Crawford leads from first.
- 38:27The pitch inside with a fastball.
- 38:29Pops out of the glove of John Stevenson.
- 38:32Lots of paper with all the wind.
- 38:34Paper rolling around the corners of Dodger Stadium.
- 38:38And now a peanut wrapper floating by Ken McMullen on its way to the backstop screen.
- 38:43Crawford from first.
- 38:44The one-two pitch.
- 38:45Swung on and missed the fastball.
- 38:46Gets McMullen.
- 38:48First strikeout for Ryan.
- 38:50We remind you that California Angels baseball is brought to you by Bush.
- 38:54When you head for Bush Gardens, take the whole family.
- 38:56There's something for everyone.
- 38:57Ride shows, music, magic.
- 38:59And you don't have to be a kid to enjoy it.
- 39:05Steve Yeager batting 192.
- 39:07Right-handed hitting catcher.
- 39:09Uses an open stance.
- 39:11Where's number seven on the back of his Dodger whites.
- 39:13Foul.
- 39:14This one out of play.
- 39:15That one up into the upper deck.
- 39:22But for the wind, it is a beautiful day.
- 39:24The temperature around 60, but for those fans not in the sun, it's a cool 60 degrees.
- 39:31And those on the third base side, with the exception of a few rows of the box seats down beyond the Dodger dugout,
- 39:39got to be a bit chilly.
- 39:40You see a lot of sweaters and coats.
- 39:42The ball high, one and one.
- 39:46Those on the first base side enjoying the afternoon sun.
- 39:52Wind continuing to just starch the two flags out in straightaway center field.
- 39:59One-one pitch by Ryan.
- 40:01Curve is popped up.
- 40:02This could be trouble.
- 40:03High into shallow center.
- 40:04Out goes Valentine.
- 40:06In comes Pinson, and it's Alomar who finally makes the catch between them.
- 40:1015 feet on the grass out behind second base.
- 40:13You can see all of the players are alert.
- 40:16Any ball hit in the air, they're all converging.
- 40:18You never know which one's going to get it.
- 40:22Two outs.
- 40:23Bill Russell, who has an eight-game hitting streak, steps in.
- 40:26That's one thing that any Major League ball player, any ball player has to do.
- 40:30You have to check the elements.
- 40:31You have to know what the elements are like going in.
- 40:34Crawford goes.
- 40:35The pitch is lined to right field.
- 40:36Stanton at the line makes the catch about three feet in fair territory.
- 40:40So Stanton playing perfectly for Russell, shallow and toward the line,
- 40:44and the wind blowing it in that direction anyway.
- 40:46Russell with a soft line out to right field.
- 40:49No runs, no hits.
- 40:50One left for the Dodgers.
- 40:51Two innings complete.
- 40:52Angels two, Dodgers one.
- 40:55This is Chevron Way product number two for Arizona.
- 41:00People really count.
- 41:02That phrase applies to everyone at Standard Oil.
- 41:04Not just the men along the Chevron Way.
- 41:06At Chevron Research, for example, it means long hours of experimentation,
- 41:10research, and testing to develop the kinds of petroleum products people really need.
- 41:15Even before people indicated they wanted less lead going into the air,
- 41:18Chevron's product engineers were at work.
- 41:21The result was Chevron unleaded with F310,
- 41:24specially blended without adding lead for cars that can use an unleaded gasoline.
- 41:28For cars that use a higher octane leaded gasoline, we offer Chevron Regular.
- 41:33And for people whose cars need a high octane premium grade gasoline,
- 41:37there's Chevron Supreme.
- 41:39Three uniquely different gasolines, all with F310,
- 41:43developed to meet customers' individual needs.
- 41:46At Standard Oil, we continue to be busy working, experimenting, listening, and responding,
- 41:53proving that people really do count along the Chevron Way.
- 42:05Bobby Valentine has started the third inning,
- 42:07and it's our pleasure to call in for the play-by-play,
- 42:09the man who has won more games than any Dodger in history, Bigby himself, Don Drysdale.
- 42:16Well, thank you very much, Dick.
- 42:17Bobby Valentine will lead it off for the Angels.
- 42:19He'll be followed by Veda Pinson and then Doug Howard in that order.
- 42:23The top of the third, two-to-one Angels.
- 42:26Tommy John having kind of a rocky start.
- 42:31He walked three men in the first inning as the Angels scored twice.
- 42:35Jim Spencer lining a single to center field, driving in the two runs.
- 42:40John goes to the lineup, the left-hander's first pitch.
- 42:42Line drive, right center field, base hit.
- 42:44Willie Davis on over to the hole.
- 42:46Valentine around first, and he'll have to hole there as Davis gets the ball back in a hurry.
- 42:52So Valentine, as we've noticed, has been hitting that ball to the opposite field,
- 42:57and it could very well be an indication that Bobby knows that he's been in kind of a slump.
- 43:03And right now they say when you're in a slump,
- 43:05that a lot of hitters will try and hit the ball back through the middle
- 43:07or hit it to the opposite field, and Bobby's been doing that this whole series.
- 43:12Veda Pinson now bunts up the third baseline, a good one.
- 43:15Ken McMullen can't get the handle.
- 43:17Valentine around second, he'll stay right there.
- 43:21So the strong point of Ken McMullen,
- 43:24barehanding that ball down the third baseline, this time cannot find the handle.
- 43:29That'll be a base hit for Pinson.
- 43:32Kind of dirty pool in a way.
- 43:33The Angels know that McMullen has a bad back, and they're going to see how bad it was,
- 43:37and he really just couldn't bend down that low.
- 43:39Mack swooping in with that barehanded pick-up.
- 43:41He just couldn't get down to the grass tops, and Pinson gets the base hit.
- 43:48Again, McMullen now doing a couple exercises over at third base.
- 43:53In field and double play depth as Doug Howard stands in.
- 43:56John's first pitch is a ground ball wide to McMullen.
- 43:58Russell over to the hole. He goes to Lopes for one.
- 44:01Back to first double play, and the dirt.
- 44:03The backhander knocks it down, but keeps it in play, and Valentine cannot advance.
- 44:12Doug Howard on a fielder's choice.
- 44:14Pinson out, 6-4.
- 44:17And the Angels now have runners at the corner with one out,
- 44:20and the hitter will be Jim Spencer.
- 44:23California Angel Baseball, it's brought to you by Chevrolet.
- 44:26Chevrolet, America's family wagon builder, is happy to announce their newest wagon,
- 44:31the Vega Estate. And it's a neat little package, the Vega.
- 44:34Fun to drive and the look of wood.
- 44:38The first pitch to Spencer is a called strike on the inside corner.
- 44:45Dodger in field and double play depth, hoping for a ground ball here,
- 44:48double play to get out of the inning.
- 44:50The next pitch is bunded up the first baseline. Buckner picks it up foul.
- 44:55Not a bad play right there.
- 45:00Oh, Valentine will go back to third, back to first, Doug Howard,
- 45:04and the count, 0-2 now to Spencer.
- 45:08The infield straight away, the outfield the same, Joshua,
- 45:11slightly over towards the line and left.
- 45:14Tommy John way out in front of Spencer now.
- 45:170-2, John to the stretch, checks the runners.
- 45:20The next pitch called strike three, fastball over the outside corner, got him looking.
- 45:26Strike out number three for John, and it will bring up the right fielder, Lee Stanton.
- 45:34During John's career in the American League, he made 33 appearances against the Angels.
- 45:40While he was with Cleveland and Chicago, 32 of them were his starter.
- 45:44The first pitch to Stanton is a called strike.
- 45:48In 230 innings against the Angels, his earned run average was 1.96,
- 45:53but his overall record was 13-13. There's a breaking pitch swung on and missed strike two.
- 45:59Well, 1.96 in 13-13. There was a little lean in those years, I think, with the White Sox in Cleveland.
- 46:09John to the stretch, checks the runners at two strike pits just outside ball one.
- 46:14One ball, two strikes now to Lee Stanton.
- 46:17Valentine at third, Howard at first, two-to-one Angels were in the top of the third.
- 46:22John wipes off a sign. Here's the one-two pitch, curveball, check swing, got him swinging, dropped by Yeager.
- 46:27He picks it up and touches Stanton, and that'll do it.
- 46:31But Angels in the third, in the inning, they get no runs.
- 46:34On two hits, there were no errors in two left, and the score after two and a half, it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 46:43When you say bud, you've said a lot of things nobody else can say. When you say bud, you've gone as far as you can go to get the very best.
- 46:58Why do some people think bud is sort of special? Go ahead and find out why.
- 47:03Maybe one of the reasons it'll suit your taste could be because Budweiser is brewed with rice instead of corn grits or corn syrup.
- 47:11When you say bud, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way. When you say bud, you say you care enough to only want the key or the egg.
- 47:26Even if it does cost more, the brewers of Budweiser are convinced that brewing beer right does make a difference.
- 47:34When you say bud, you've said it all.
- 47:42We go to the Dodger third, and it'll be the pitcher Tommy John will lead it off. He'll be followed by the leadoff hitter Dave Lopes and then the left fielder Von Joshua.
- 47:55A lot of that crushed brick dust around, blowing around here at Dodger Stadium today. We can notice it even way up here in the booth.
- 48:03The Giants first pitch to John's a fastball called strike. John throws from the left side, hits from the right side.
- 48:13The one strike pitch is a little looper hit in the right field, going to drop for a base hit.
- 48:18And Senn goes back to Spencer at first base, but Spencer did not get back to the bag in time. Had he done that, they very well could have had a play on Tommy John at first base.
- 48:32That's the first hit given up by Nolan Ryan.
- 48:37I can remember in Ebbets Field many times, Carl Ferullo doing just that same thing, that short right field porch there in Ebbets Field.
- 48:45And of course, Carl had the great arm, and he'd charge a ball and pick that thing up and fire it to Hodges at first base.
- 48:53And I'll tell you, that was awfully embarrassing for a runner going down that line. Get a base hit to right field, and all of a sudden you look up and you're thrown out.
- 49:02We'll go to the leadoff hitter, Dave Lopes, who walked and scored the Dodgers' only run. The first pitches knocked him down, ball one.
- 49:11Charlie Dressen used to say, high neck in.
- 49:17Spencer not holding John at first. Here's the 1-0 pitch. Curveball drops in and over. Strike one, called.
- 49:24Angel infield and double play depth. Grabarca, which is third up in front of the bag in the cut of the grass.
- 49:32The 1-1 pitch, curveball outside, ball two.
- 49:38Two runs, three hits, no errors for the Angels. One run on one hit, no errors for the Dodgers. We're in the last of the third.
- 49:45The next pitch, a curveball up over his head, and he falls out of the way to count three and one.
- 49:50Just sitting here in between innings watching Nolan Ryan warm up. He took his eight pitches to throw. He threw one curveball and didn't throw it very well.
- 49:58Now he's throwing three curveballs, one a strike, two a ball. The next pitch, fastball, called strike.
- 50:04I think that's probably one of the most, well, one of the biggest faults you would see of major league pitchers.
- 50:10They don't give you those eight pitches out there in between innings. You should go out there and take advantage of all eight pitches because you've got to get yourself back in that groove again.
- 50:20A groove is repetition, and just to throw it for no reason at all doesn't make too much sense.
- 50:25Three-two pitch, up high, ball four. And Lopes draws a base on balls.
- 50:31Second time Lopes has walked. That's the third base on balls given up by Ryan.
- 50:37You can see Nolan on that pitch rear back and really try to get a little extra on the fastball.
- 50:42And what he did, he overthrew it and threw it high. And that again, such a common fault, and not just with Ryan, but any pitcher you try to throw a little too much and you don't succeed at all.
- 50:52Fond Joshua now, they hit her. Spencer up at first, Gaparkowicz at third. Joshua not funning. The fastball taken up high for ball one.
- 51:00Now Joshua steps out, looks down at his third base coach, Tommy Lasorda. Tommy flashing some signs. Lopes at first, John at second. No outs.
- 51:11Here's the one-oh pitch, fastball. That's a called strike, and the count evened up now to ball and a strike.
- 51:20Angel infield, double play depth. Gaparkowicz, Spencer up at the corner. Outfield swung to the left.
- 51:26Now around the bun and pops in the air. Gaparkowicz makes the catch, and everybody gets back as Jim Spencer just drops to his back, trying to get out of the way in case of a possible play at first.
- 51:46Now there was a play right there, and once again we've talked about instinct, a high pop-up. John standing on the bag at second base. Gaparkowicz lets that ball drop.
- 51:56All he's got to do is throw to Valentine at second, who can touch John, tag the bag, and you got a double play. First pitch to Billy Buckner, the fastball up high, ball one.
- 52:13John at second, lopes at first. Nolan to the stretch, and the next pitch, curveball, taking up high for ball two.
- 52:25Buckner hit the ball right on the nose his first time at bat, and Veda Pinson made a great catch going away right at the 395 marker in center field.
- 52:39Ryan to the stretch, the 2-0 pitch, breaking pitch outside, ball three. Well Ryan having trouble with his curveball.
- 52:55Nolan checks signs with Stevenson, here's the 3-0 pitch, fastball, high ball four, and Buckner has a base on balls, Lopes will go to second, John will go to third, and Willie Davis will be the hitter.
- 53:09The fourth base on balls given up by Nolan Ryan. Well if you're looking for the double play right now, it's going to be tough.
- 53:19That's the only way here when you stop and look at it, a line drive at somebody somewhere where they can double up somebody on the face or a one hopper back to Ryan.
- 53:31Ryan rocks, here's the first pitch to Davis, swung on and missed, strike one, foul tipped and held by Stevenson.
- 53:40Willie going all the way around, Tom Lasorda clapping his hands, yelling encouragement to Davis. John at third, Lopes at second, Buckner at first, the base is loaded.
- 53:51Two to one, Angels are the last of the third, one out. Ryan checks signs with Stevenson, now nods his head yes, takes a little too much time and Davis steps out.
- 54:07The Angels up on the front step, pitching coach Tom Morgan standing alongside Tom Berry, manager Bobby Winkle is playing around with the dirt a little bit.
- 54:15Coach Sallie Parker standing there. Ryan Wides, here's the one strike pitch, ground ball, hit to the shortstop, Valentine, Hallimoth the one to set the double play.
- 54:28Willie Davis hits into a fast double play and it had to be fast with his speed to end the inning for the Dodgers in the third.
- 54:37End the inning, no runs on one hit, there were no errors and two left and a score after three complete, it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 54:47When you discover good service at a restaurant or a hotel, chances are you'll return there again and again.
- 54:53The same is true for an airline. Good service gets customers coming back again and again and returned passengers are Continental Airlines best advertisement.
- 55:02Passengers may differ on why they prefer Continental, but one thing they seem to agree on is the fact that someday they'll be Continental passengers again.
- 55:11As a matter of fact, seven out of every ten people who fly Continental are people who've flown them before.
- 55:17And Continental believes pride is behind all the good things that keep people coming back, things like innovations for you, new ways to serve you, and every bit as important, a special attitude,
- 55:29a willingness to do all those little extras that will make your flight so much better.
- 55:33In other words, pride gets things done. So the next time you're going somewhere, Continental goes, fly with them.
- 55:40The odds are in your favor that you'll fly them again. Continental Airlines, the proud bird with a golden tail.
- 55:48Back here at Dodger Stadium on a bright, sunshiny afternoon, a very windy afternoon, the Angels lead it two to one.
- 55:55They come to bat in the fourth, and it'll be the middleman of that inning-ending double play.
- 56:01Sandy Elomar will lead it off. He'll be followed by the eighth place hitter, Stevenson, and the pitcher, Ryan.
- 56:08Tommy John, starting his fourth inning of work. Tommy's settling down now, getting a little more consistent as the innings roll along.
- 56:20Elomar, his first time at bat, sent Willie Crawford deep to the warning track right in front of the Angel bullpen to haul down his drive with a couple men on.
- 56:30John now taking a little extra time, a few extra warm-up tosses. He's out on the base paths in that last inning, and the umpires in spring training will usually let you do that.
- 56:43The final score, San Francisco defeated Oakland 10-9. The winning pitcher, Barr, the losing pitcher, Gardner.
- 56:52Sandy Elomar hitting 344, the first pitch by John is fouled away, strike one.
- 57:03Elomar, with 11 hits and 32 times at bat, has six RBIs this spring.
- 57:10Here's the one-strike pitch that leans him out of there, and the cat now ball and a strike.
- 57:20On deck, Johnny Stevenson. John rocks the next pitch as a screwball outside, ball two.
- 57:27You'll find that a lot of the Dodgers on this staff, after Jim Brewer came up with that screwball, a lot of the Dodger pitchers now throw it.
- 57:34Osteen throws it, John throws it, Downing throws it. There's a high fly ball curling back to the right over the Angel dugout.
- 57:41It'll go back and out of play about five rows. Don Sutton will even throw it.
- 57:48I'm not too sure whether any of them have had the success with it that Jim Brewer has, but if they get half of the success, why, they've got a pretty good pitch going for them.
- 57:57Because Brewer's got a great one.
- 58:01John Wines, a 2-2 pitch, line drive, left field, base hit on one hop.
- 58:06Von Joshua gets it back in to Bill Russell, and the Angels have something going again.
- 58:13That's the fourth hit. California Angel baseball is brought to you by Standard Station and Chevron dealers.
- 58:21Cars that can use unleaded gasoline can get great performance from specially blended Chevron Unleaded with no lead added.
- 58:28Available only along the Chevron way.
- 58:33John, working from a stretch now, the first pitch to Stevenson, started to go, checks takes outside for ball one.
- 58:43The wind really blowing in from left field.
- 58:49John to the stretch, goes over to first, a little easy lob toss, and Alomar back.
- 58:59John to the stretch, and next pitch, line drive, right at Buckner, almost knocks him down, he goes to the bag for the force of Alomar.
- 59:06They double him up.
- 59:09Stevenson hit that ball right on the nose. It staggered Buckner at first base.
- 59:14He right at himself, went back a couple steps, stepped on the bag, did double up Alomar, and very quickly, two men away for the Angels here in the fourth.
- 59:23That's two line drive double plays the Angels have hit into in the first fournints of this game, and perhaps a sign of their hitting luck.
- 59:29They hit the ball pretty well last night and couldn't find the open spot.
- 59:35Nolan Ryan now will stand in. He was caught looking his first time at bat. He takes a curve ball a little high for ball one.
- 59:46The next pitch is inside, Nolan getting out of the way of that pitch, out around his knees to count two and oh.
- 59:54On deck the leadoff hitter, Bill Grabarkowicz.
- 59:58Ryan swings it a fastball and misses, strike one.
- 1:00:02The count now, two balls and a strike.
- 1:00:07John Wines at two one pitch, ground ball tapped up to third base side, foul, Sauli Parker.
- 1:00:13Goes over, he'll just flip it back out to John, and the count evened up at two and two.
- 1:00:20Ryan was one for two this spring, they won for three at this time at bat.
- 1:00:27The two two pitch got him looking, called strike three with a fastball.
- 1:00:30So the second time Ryan has been caught looking, had to retire as the Angels in the fourth.
- 1:00:35They get no runs on a hit, nobody left on base, and the score after three and a half, it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 1:00:43Laguna is Chevelle and it's fair.
- 1:00:49Laguna is the new addition to Chevrolet's popular Chevelle line. It has handsome new colonnade styling.
- 1:00:55What's that? Pillared hardtop design with increased visibility area and double paneled roof with strength and quiet.
- 1:01:03Laguna is Chevelle and it's fair.
- 1:01:08Laguna has an improved front bumper that doesn't look like a bumper.
- 1:01:11It's a protective enclosure that engineers call a nose cone, mounted on a shock absorbing system so it deflects and rebounds on minor impacts.
- 1:01:18It's steel on the inside and resilient urethane on the outside to protect against minor dents and dings.
- 1:01:24Laguna, a new name for the new top of the line Chevelle. Drive it and see if you don't agree.
- 1:01:30Laguna is Chevelle and it's fair.
- 1:01:34From Chevrolet, building a better way.
- 1:01:45Willie Crawford will lead it off for the Dodgers in their half of the fourth.
- 1:01:48He'll be followed by Ken McMullen and then the catcher Steve Yeager.
- 1:01:52Crawford his first time at bat drew a base on balls.
- 1:01:55Willie having a fine spring hitting.351.
- 1:02:02Ryan Wines the first pitch of fastball swung on and missed strike one.
- 1:02:06Good fastball by Ryan.
- 1:02:08And he got it right in where you have to get that ball on Crawford.
- 1:02:12Up and in.
- 1:02:16Crawford, one of the three Dodgers competing in that spring championship batting race.
- 1:02:21Hitting.351, Lacey.352, Ferguson.367.
- 1:02:26The next pitch is a change up outside ball one. The count evened up at one and one.
- 1:02:31Donnie Quiz up on the board. Did any pitcher ever hurl a no hit no run game on opening day?
- 1:02:37Next pitch is bowled on the right side. The count now one and two. Gee, I don't know about that.
- 1:02:42I think I know the answer to that one. It's yes and it was done by an American leaguer.
- 1:02:48What's that huh?
- 1:02:56Initials BF.
- 1:02:59The next pitcher Crawford is lined on the left field side and will go back and out of play.
- 1:03:04Could have been Mr. Feller.
- 1:03:07I think Bob Feller did it around 1939, 40, 41 in there someplace.
- 1:03:11I think it was the Yankees that he no hit.
- 1:03:17Ryan Wyens, here's the one two pitch to Crawford at curveball and Willie kicking that left leg back out of the way.
- 1:03:24Keeping out of the way of that breaking pitch. He kept breaking in on him.
- 1:03:31The count evened to Crawford at two balls and two strikes. Ryan's two two pitch high and away, ball three.
- 1:03:38Crawford takes the count full again, three balls and two strikes.
- 1:03:45Ryan checks signs with Stevenson, Wyens, here's the three two pitch.
- 1:03:49High pop to the left side, back Grabarowicz and Valentine.
- 1:03:53Grabarowicz calling, right on the line, staggering backwards and makes the catch.
- 1:03:58Let's pause for station identification. This is the Angel Radio Network.
- 1:04:03You're listening to KXTC 92.3, Glendale, Phoenix, Arizona.
- 1:04:07Transmitting from the tower with the power top the hotel Westford Hill in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
- 1:04:13One out here in the Dodger fourth and Ken McMullen will stand in.
- 1:04:21The first pitch of curveball drops in and over, strike one call.
- 1:04:28Ryan rocks, here's the one strike pitch, another curveball called strike two.
- 1:04:36So far the most consistent inning that no one has pitched.
- 1:04:42Ryan Wyens, here's the two strike pitch, curveball up high, ball one.
- 1:04:46One ball and two strikes. On deck the Dodger catcher, Steve Yeager.
- 1:04:53Ryan's one two pitch, fastball high and away, flag down by Johnny Stevenson.
- 1:04:58The count evened up now, two and two.
- 1:05:04Here's the two two pitch, McMullen started to go held up and now after going on two, Ryan is three and two.
- 1:05:19One out, nobody on. The Angels lead it two to one, we're in the last of the fourth.
- 1:05:23Here's Ryan's three two pitch, curveball, got him swinging, strike three.
- 1:05:28McMullen tried to hold up but he went around, says home plate umpire Chris Felikoudis.
- 1:05:34That's the second time McMullen has struck out and the only two strikeouts for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:05:39Two gone and Steve Yeager will be the hitter.
- 1:05:45Yeager this spring hitting 192, five hits and 26 times at bat.
- 1:05:51Ryan Wyens and the right handers first pitch is fouled to the right side, back up in the blue level.
- 1:05:56Third deck and some fan up there has himself a souvenir.
- 1:06:08All in one to Yeager. Ryan Wyens, here's the one strike pitch, curveball taking up high.
- 1:06:15The count of ball and a strike, Grabarcovich at third base is about 15 feet off the line and almost to the outfield grass.
- 1:06:23The first pitch is a breaking pitch up high for ball two.
- 1:06:29The outfield around to the right.
- 1:06:34Ryan's two one pitch, curveball taking up high, ball three.
- 1:06:45Nolan checks sides with Stevenson, here's the three one pitch, fastball swung on and missed, strike two.
- 1:06:50Fastball by Ryan, Yeager had a rip.
- 1:06:54On deck the Dodger shortstop, Bill Russell.
- 1:06:58The rubber game of the three game series, the freeway series, each team with a victory of feast.
- 1:07:03The next pitch is popped in the infield, Valentine calling behind the mound, right there makes the catch for out number three.
- 1:07:11Retires the Dodgers three up three down, the first time they've been retired in order.
- 1:07:16No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left and a score after four complete it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 1:07:40Wherever road you travel, to camp, to serve, to ski or to just take in the scenery, there's a good chance you'll find us there too.
- 1:07:48Because there are more than 23,000 standard stations and Chevron dealers ready to serve you along the Chevron way.
- 1:07:56We put stations where you need them for work or play along with warm friendly service to help you on your way again.
- 1:08:05People really come along the Chevron way.
- 1:08:12Along the Chevron way.
- 1:08:14Along the Chevron way.
- 1:08:16Along the Chevron way.
- 1:08:18Along the Chevron way.
- 1:08:26We go along now to the top of the fifth with the Angels leading it two to one.
- 1:08:30Billy Grabackiewicz will lead it off for the Angels and for here with the action, Wickenburg.
- 1:08:34Thank you Don and the answer now flashed up on the scoreboard in less center field.
- 1:08:38It was Bob Feller who did throw a no hit, no run game on opening day 1940.
- 1:08:42It was against the Chicago Whitesox.
- 1:08:44Against the Whitesox the fellas are in that track.
- 1:08:46Bill Grabackiewicz has walked and lined into one of two double plays.
- 1:08:50The Angels have been victimized hitting the ball right on the nose into double plays.
- 1:08:53They've had some base traffic in every inning, scoring two times in the first inning on walks to Grabackiewicz and Valentine, a fielder's choice and a two run single by Jim Spencer.
- 1:09:02The pitch by John, Grabackiewicz takes the screwball outside ball one.
- 1:09:07The Dodgers came back to score their end in the bottom of the first inning without the aid of a base hit, a walk, a ground out, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
- 1:09:14That's a drive into right center field racing towards right is Crawford and he can't handle the ball.
- 1:09:18Grabackiewicz around first, he's going to second, here's the throw, it is not in time.
- 1:09:23And again Dave Loeb's a little indecisive about getting the ball and going to the bag.
- 1:09:28That's twice as, that's happened today that Loeb just had the ball off the bag but in time to tag the base runner had he gone to the bag.
- 1:09:36But he's caught the ball and seems surprised that the runner was trying to advance and in that hesitation period lost the chance to get the out.
- 1:09:45It is ruled a double all the way, Crawford racing over and in left his feet and as he got his glove on the ball he landed on the turf and it rolled away from his grasp.
- 1:09:56And Grabackiewicz with a play in front of him on the gamble made it to second base a double.
- 1:10:00Here's Bobby Valentine, a walk and a single, he bunts off home plate foul, Jaeger gloves it about ten feet behind the plate.
- 1:10:07So Grabackiewicz hits the ball hard twice, opens this fifth inning with a double, the Angels leading 2-1.
- 1:10:17That's five hits for the Angels, the Dodgers have only one, a looping single to right by the pitcher Tommy John of Nolan Ryan.
- 1:10:25Grabby leads from second, John checks him and the pitch, tap foul at the plate by Valentine.
- 1:10:32Two strikes to count, Veda Pinson on deck, Pinson has made an outstanding defensive play to Rob Billy Buckner of extra bases sprinting straight back to straight away center field and reaching high over his head to glove a drive off Buckner's bat in the first inning.
- 1:10:47On that play Loeb scored the only dodge to run.
- 1:10:53John sets ahead on the count, two strikes, looks back at second and the pitch, curveball hangs high and away.
- 1:11:00A free t-shirt goes with Junior Angels memberships this season and you'll see 11 Angel games won against each American League opponent for only $2.
- 1:11:08Information at your standard and Chevron stations now.
- 1:11:13Here's the pitch, swung on, a fly ball hit pretty well to right field, Crawford backpedaling, he's under it, Grabackiewicz tags, the catch is made.
- 1:11:20Grabackiewicz on his way to third, the throw won't get there in time although it was a strong accurate throw, one hop right to McMullen.
- 1:11:28Grabackiewicz able to advance.
- 1:11:30The Angels again with a man at third and one out.
- 1:11:34They had it set up that way in the third inning, first and third with one out but John struck out Spencer and Stanton.
- 1:11:42Now Grabackiewicz with excellent speed at third base, Aldi Parker talking to him as Veda Pinson steps in the better spots and the Dodger infield draws in.
- 1:11:50McMullen, Russell, Lopes and Buckner will try to cut off the run at the plate.
- 1:11:53The pitch, swung on a ground ball foul passed Buckner and of course with that infield drawn in, if you hit the ball hard at all, you've got a good chance for a base hit unless it's aimed right at one of the opposing infielders.
- 1:12:05The outfield plays Pinson straight away in medium depth.
- 1:12:09Two to one Angels, Angels trying to add to that lead.
- 1:12:14Big story today as it's been an errorless game.
- 1:12:18Some fine defensive play.
- 1:12:20Grabackiewicz leads, here's the pitch, swung on and foul back to us out of play.
- 1:12:26So John jumps in front of Pinson, two strikes.
- 1:12:29On deck is Doug Howard.
- 1:12:36Grabackiewicz at third base now with three hits in the series.
- 1:12:42Couple of walks, the pitch outside the third base, they get him.
- 1:12:52Grabackiewicz has picked off third base on a snap throw by catcher Steve Yeager.
- 1:12:58They had Grabackiewicz too far off the bag and a perfect throw by Yeager and McMullen had the ball waiting for the head first line of Grabackiewicz.
- 1:13:05So the Angels lose the scoring chance again.
- 1:13:07Curve ball inside, two and two.
- 1:13:11Boy that Yeager shot the ball down to McMullen.
- 1:13:14I don't know if that was a play that they had worked out but McMullen playing in got over to the bag, perfect timing.
- 1:13:20Outside, three and two now to Pinson.
- 1:13:29Flying by John is three-two delivery, swung on, bounce to the right side. There's Buckner to underhand the ball on to John in time for the out and the Angels are denied in the fifth inning.
- 1:13:39No runs, a hit, no one left and at the halfway mark in this one, four and a half innings in the book.
- 1:13:43It's the Angels two, the Dodgers one.
- 1:13:46Hi, I'm Frank Loveson of the Angels and I'd like to tell you boys and girls about a big night coming up at Anaheim Stadium Friday, April 27th.
- 1:13:55That's bat night. Free bats approved for Little League play will be given to youngsters up to 14 years.
- 1:14:02Be sure to let mom and dad know about this special treat.
- 1:14:05Free bats when the Angels play the Cleveland Indians on Friday, April 27th.
- 1:14:10Tickets are on sale daily at Anaheim Stadium box office from 9 to 5.30. See you there.
- 1:14:18Bottom of the fifth inning at Dodgers Stadium, Nolan Ryan warming up.
- 1:14:21He's allowed one hit through the first four innings, but he's walked four, struck out two.
- 1:14:25He'll face Bill Russell, Tommy John and Dave Lopes. Neither both in busy at the moment.
- 1:14:33In the National Basketball Association playoffs today, Golden State defeated Milwaukee 95-92 to even their series at a game of peace.
- 1:14:42And the Knicks took a new game lead over Baltimore's Bullets with an easy 1-23-1-0-3 victory.
- 1:14:50Bill Russell looped a line drive to right, caught by Stanton his only time up.
- 1:14:56Russell, the lanky, right-handed batter. Excellent speed.
- 1:15:00Grabakowicz bags high at third. Spencer backs off at first base. The outfield playing around toward right.
- 1:15:05Ryan delivers. Fastball bounced to the left side. Grabakowicz in front of Valentine. Quick throw in time.
- 1:15:11Nice play by Grabby. He was at least half of the way between third and second when he gloved the ball at the edge of the grass.
- 1:15:17And then side wheeled his throw over to Spencer in time for the first out.
- 1:15:21Tommy John, the only doctor with a base hit as he just punched one in front of Lee Stanton in right field.
- 1:15:28Stanton flanged drastically over toward the line. And that's right where John hit it before.
- 1:15:34Doug Howard way off the line in left field. Now Pinson moving from center into right center and shallow.
- 1:15:40Pitched by Ryan. High and away with a fastball. Davy Lopes on deck.
- 1:15:47Ryan works as fast as any pitcher in the league. He's waiting for John to get back in the box and here it comes.
- 1:15:53High again with a fastball but a delayed called strike by Pellicutis. One and one.
- 1:16:02The pitch. High. Two and one.
- 1:16:07Yes sir, it's hand rubbing time in the Dodger Stadium unless you're blessed with the warmth of the sun.
- 1:16:14A two one angel lead. It's 1973 freeway series in the balance.
- 1:16:20Strike outside edge. Ryan with four consecutive fastballs.
- 1:16:26The whole aerodynamics created by the strong wind and the circular stadium.
- 1:16:30A ground ball to the right side handled by Spencer. He throws to Ryan for the out. Two away.
- 1:16:36Three one on the put out of Tommy. John brings up Dave Lopes.
- 1:16:40Hot dog wrappers.
- 1:16:44Giving Wilbur Wright and rather some interesting ideas.
- 1:16:50Some interesting flows.
- 1:16:52All of a sudden the hot dog wrapper just lifted right off the floor of one of the grandstand areas and just vertical thrust.
- 1:17:03Lopes, little right handed batter, has walked toward the Dodger run in the first inning. Walked again in the third.
- 1:17:08Pitch by Ryan. Curve ball. A beauty.
- 1:17:11Sharp breaking curve that caught the outside edge.
- 1:17:14Drabachowicz, Valentine, Alomar and Spencer.
- 1:17:17The infield. The outfield. Howard and left. Pinson and center. Stanton and right.
- 1:17:21John Stephenson the catcher. He sends out the sign and Nolan Ryan kicks and fires.
- 1:17:25The curve. Waived out and missed. Strike two.
- 1:17:30Von Joshua would be next. Ryan retired the Dodgers in order in the fourth inning the first time that he had mowed them down.
- 1:17:36The pitch. High with a fast ball. One and two.
- 1:17:41Ryan throwing hard.
- 1:17:44He's ready. The pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike three.
- 1:17:48So for the second straight inning Ryan gets the Dodgers one, two, three.
- 1:17:52And after five innings since the Angels two, the Dodgers one.
- 1:17:56When you say Bud, you've said a lot of things nobody else can say.
- 1:18:04Why do some people think Bud is sort of special? Go ahead and find out why.
- 1:18:11Maybe one of the reasons it'll suit your taste could be because Budweiser is brewed with imported hops as well as the best of the domestic blossoms.
- 1:18:19Sure, syrupy hops extract would be cheaper, but that's not for Budweiser.
- 1:18:24When you say Bud, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way.
- 1:18:30When you say Bud, you say you care enough to only want the key on beer.
- 1:18:42Brewing beer right does make a difference.
- 1:18:46When you say Bud, why?
- 1:18:49You've said it all.
- 1:18:53To the top of the sixth inning, two to one Angels.
- 1:19:01The run scored in the first inning a walk to Gravachewitz.
- 1:19:04Valentine walked. Henson forced Valentine.
- 1:19:09Make that sound a bunch by it was the lead runner. Gravachewitz forced a third.
- 1:19:13So Valentine in second, Henson at first.
- 1:19:16And then they worked a double steal.
- 1:19:18And with two outs, Jim Spencer's line drive single to center field scored the two runs.
- 1:19:23There have been other opportunities for the Angels, but a couple of line drive double plays have helped Tommy John.
- 1:19:29The Dodger run a walk to Lopes leading off the first. He moved a second on a ground out to third on a wild pitch and came home on Bill Buckner's long drive to center field on which Vada Henson made an outstanding play.
- 1:19:41Doug Howard, 0 for 2, steps in. John kicks his pitch. A little low ball on.
- 1:19:48Angels two runs, five hits. The Dodgers no runs or check that one run and one hit.
- 1:19:54The pitch on the outside edge, one and one.
- 1:19:58Playing Howard as a dead pole hitter, they give him the gap in right center.
- 1:20:02One one pitch, swung on late and missed. Howard struck out for only the third time this spring in the first inning.
- 1:20:12John working quickly.
- 1:20:14The one two delivery, low, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:20:17Howard stands up in the batter's box, that front foot right on the front chalk line.
- 1:20:23The pitch, swung on and missed and John gets him again. So Howard has struck out only twice all spring and John gets the job done twice today.
- 1:20:32Poor Tommy John, that is his sixth strikeout. Brings up Jim Spencer.
- 1:20:38Two runs single in the first inning. He took a third strike in the third and that was costly because the Angels had runners at first and third at the time.
- 1:20:49The pitch, fouled away. Angels also had Grabakwitz picked off third with only one out.
- 1:20:55So it's two to one. The Angels in front here in the sixth inning.
- 1:20:59Lee Stanton on deck. Wynn continues to just whip the flags toward the right field corner.
- 1:21:06Curveball bends away. One and one.
- 1:21:10Those giant flag steps just bending with the force of that wind.
- 1:21:16The pitch swung on, ground ball sharply to Buckner. He has to deep it first and goes to the bag himself in time for the out.
- 1:21:23Two away, Lee Stanton in the batter and a reminder that California Angels baseball is brought to you by Bush.
- 1:21:28At Bush Gardens in Van Nuys there's no extra charge for the rides or the shows or music.
- 1:21:33Your one admission price includes them all and you don't have to be a kid to enjoy it.
- 1:21:37Take the San Diego freeway to the Roscoe exit. Bush Gardens, Van Nuys.
- 1:21:42John's pitch Stanton looks at it outside. Angels come into this game with only three more left this spring and still just one home run hit by the Angels ball club.
- 1:21:52Low two and oh and that by Frank Robinson his first time at bat.
- 1:21:59The pitch by John on the outside edge two and one.
- 1:22:05The Dodgers have not hit a lot of home runs either but they've got a few more.
- 1:22:10High fly ball to right and the wind has it. Crawford drifting back. He's at the warning track still going back and he makes the catch at the bullpen gate.
- 1:22:18You could say the wind was going to help that one. Crawford easing back and finally forced to get all the way to the bullpen gate in front of the Angel Relief Corps to make the catch of Stanton's windblown fly.
- 1:22:29That's the first time that John has gotten the Angels in order and after five and a half Angels two Dodgers one and with a word from the proud bird here's Big D.
- 1:22:39The next time you fly to Denver fly a Continental DC 10.

- 1:23:05They've even got the kitchens on the main deck to make sure you get your food while it's hot and Continental is the only airline flying DC 10s from Los Angeles to Denver.
- 1:23:15But there's something else you'll find out about pride on Continental.
- 1:23:19It's an attitude a feeling a willingness to do something extra to make your flight just that much better.
- 1:23:25It's what brings people back to Continental.
- 1:23:28So find out for yourself how pride gets things done on a Continental DC 10.
- 1:23:33For your convenience there are six DC 10 non-stops to Denver every day.
- 1:23:38Continental Airlines the proud bird with a golden tail.
- 1:23:45To one angels lead the Dodgers bottom of the sixth inning Von Joshua rubbing some dust out of his eye before he steps in now has to back back out again as the wind swirling around the home plate area.
- 1:23:55Nolan Ryan has retired the last seven men in order Joshua over two in the game pitch by Nolan high ball on Joshua Buckner and Davis and Crawford next four left handed hitters stacked up in a row in the Dodger lineup.
- 1:24:14I to know these are the things right now that we're in the spring it can really take a toll on a starting pitcher pitching on a windy day like this.
- 1:24:23He's got the fastball down below the belt and carved the plate in half two and one Valentine just turning his head away from a big dust storm out of short and Ryan delivers high and away three and one when seemed to throw his pitching motion off that time right in the middle of his delivery Ryan seemed to fall off the mound.
- 1:24:43He's got a long standing throwing for the Dodgers no one throwing out in the angels and three one pitch right down the middle three and two.
- 1:24:52Ryan has given up just one hit through five innings and by pitcher Tommy John three to delivery line foul slicing back into the seats down the left field line.
- 1:25:02Doug Rowe throwing again he was working back in the first inning for the Dodgers.
- 1:25:12Ryan's longest outing of the spring six innings that was the last time out against Milwaukee Brewers file back again by Joshua and the count remains full.
- 1:25:25Ryan's work three against the Cubs and three against the Brewers then extended the four innings against the Indians five against the Giants six against the Brewers might try to go seven today. The wind and no man has to back off the rubber and tosses the ball into Stevenson and asked for an exchange.
- 1:25:42National Hockey League final Montreal Canadian's defeated the Boston Bruins five to three.
- 1:25:51Two one angel lead Joshua up full count bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:25:59I feel playing Joshua well around toward left gave him all to the right field corner.
- 1:26:06Here's the pitch swung on a miss he blew him down with a fastball and it appeared to be ball for but had a lot on it.
- 1:26:13That's that good rising fastball looks like a strike about 20 feet out in front of home plate but at the time you swing on that ball is coming up over the shoulders or strikeouts for Ryan Billy Buckner sacrifice fly and a walk so he's not been up officially.
- 1:26:29I feel playing him about the same toward left strike outside corner.
- 1:26:38Willie Davis on deck right hander from Texas Nolan Ryan's pitch a curve upstairs one and one.
- 1:26:52A ball and a strike Ryan serves it Buckner takes it inside a change changed off the fastball shadows from the left field stands growing out toward the foul line and the third base time.
- 1:27:08All the players still in that warm sunshine to one pitch high fly ball to left the wind will hold that up Howard drifting with it toward the line and coming in makes the cat.
- 1:27:20Two away and that's down nine in a row retired by Nolan Ryan we pause for station identification this is the angels radio network.
- 1:27:28You're listening to K XTC 92.3 Glendale Phoenix Arizona transmitting from the tower with the power top the hotel Westward ho in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
- 1:27:43The ball is up for the Dodgers the pitch by Ryan strike with a curveball a key point in this game was back in the third inning the Dodgers had the bases loaded with one out and Davis up and Ryan got Davis to hit into a sharp double play six four three.
- 1:27:57A little all one and one and since then Ryan has not allowed a base runner a ball and a strike to Willie D two outs no one on bottom of the sixth inning. Here's the pitch swung on a high fly ball the left center Howard coming in still coming in Valentine out who's calling.
- 1:28:13The ball. And David's second day at Howard ball but no one seemed to be calling for it. Valentine was in control and the last minute had to reach over his head went off his love and that's an air charge to Bobby Valentine.
- 1:28:32And there are the weekend Davis the second and the batter is Willie Crawford.
- 1:28:43Well it would have been amazing had we gotten through this afternoon without at least one of those.
- 1:28:50And then sets the pitch to Crawford high ball one. No question to what Ryan is a straight pitcher partially because he's so much better from the wind up he has much better control than he does from the stretch and that's how he has to work now the pitch curve outside to
- 1:29:07the left. That play that last play right there. Dick you're so right. It is a left fielder's ball coming in anytime that infielder has to backpedal out as Bobby Valentine is a left fielder coming in has to play right in front of him and all he has to do is call him off.
- 1:29:23Davis leads from second to pitch strike change on the outside edge. I think that here's an inexperienced outfielder in Howard and with the wind blowing as it is if Valentine was calling you probably think well the wind's going to keep blowing away from me anyway maybe Valentine does have a better chance but it didn't work out that way.
- 1:29:40Two one pitch Crawford swing right through a fastball Crawford with a big swing at a rising fastball and it's two and two. The Dodgers trying to tie it to balls to the strikes to outs and number three Willie Davis out of second base.
- 1:29:59Ryan looks back at Davis pulls up a sleeve on that right arm now from the belt the two to pitch fastball foul to the screen. Ryan got that one down where he wanted it down around the thighs.
- 1:30:14Ken McMullen on deck.
- 1:30:17Still no one throwing in the angel bullpen Doug Routh more serious in his work in the left field corner for the Dodgers.
- 1:30:26Two one ball game the angels in front been that way since the first inning. The two to pitch inside and Crawford bending with the knees forward and arching the back to get his chin out of the way is that fastball came running in on him.
- 1:30:41Three and two on Willie Crawford Crawford with a double a home run and a single last night.
- 1:30:48Knocked in two and scored two in the five one Dodger win the three to pitch curveball bounce weakly to the right side Spencer up with it to the bag in time for the out and the inning is over.
- 1:31:00Ryan continues his masterful pitching and although Al Downing was brilliant last night pretty tough to find fault with Ryan's work today is not only a punch single by Tommy John through six innings no runs no hits and air and a man left for the Dodgers in the sixth we go to the seventh to one angels lead.
- 1:31:18The Chevy Vega is referred to as the award winning little car because it's won more than a chair of awards in its first year 1971 Vega was the Motor Trend car of the year.

- 1:32:12Vega, just because it's better doesn't mean it's more.

- 1:32:37Top of the seventh. Here's Don. Thank you Dick. As Sandy Elomar stands in, John's first pitch is a breaking pitch, taking up high for ball one.
- 1:32:45Elomar this afternoon, one for two. He flied to right, deep to right, sending Crawford to the warning track and single back in the fourth.
- 1:32:52The 1-0 pitch is outside for ball two. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:32:58Elomar now steps out, looks down at his third base coach, Saldy Parker.
- 1:33:03Here's the 2-0 pitch outside for ball three. And John not too happy with that call.
- 1:33:12McMullen about a step behind the bag at third. Buckner shortened up at first.
- 1:33:18The next pitch is down low, ball four. John now unhappy as Elomar draws a base on balls.
- 1:33:32Elomar at first and Johnny Stevenson will be the hitter. John walked in the second and lined into a double play in the fourth.
- 1:33:40Oh, Buckner holding Elomar. McMullen up even with a bag at third as John goes to the stretch. The first pitch is swung on and missed strike one.
- 1:33:50On deck is the pitcher, Nolan Ryan. Two to one Angels were in the top of the seventh.
- 1:33:59John goes to the stretch. He checks Elomar. The next pitch is a pitch out. Elomar not going and the county's a dusted one and one.
- 1:34:09Dodger infield and double play depth. The outfield about straight away. Joshua in left field not too deep.
- 1:34:15Davis in center field not very deep also. They go to first base and back with one big step is Elomar.
- 1:34:29John on the rubber now, leans in, checks signs with Yeager. To the stretch as he checks Elomar at first.
- 1:34:34There he goes. A pitch grounded to Buckner. Fair ball. He will go to the bag and Stevenson retired on the play. Elomar moves to second.
- 1:34:46California Angel Baseball is brought to you by Standard Station and Chevron Dealers. Quality products, people, and service.
- 1:34:53Three of the many reasons you'll want to stop regularly at Standard Stations and Chevron Dealers along the Chevron way.
- 1:35:03A runner in scoring position, Sandy Elomar out at second base with one out and the pitcher, Nolan Ryan, will be the hitter.
- 1:35:09Ryan has been caught looking twice today. Two of the six strikeouts that Tommy John has.
- 1:35:16Now John whirls and leans his head down like a bird dog running back at Elomar at second base, nobody covering.
- 1:35:27John to the stretch, he checks Elomar. The first pitch to Ryan, a check swing taken outside for ball one.
- 1:35:34Nolan, not a bad hitting pitcher. Russell trying to jockey in behind Elomar at second. John to the stretch, checks Elomar, checks again,
- 1:35:46and tries to drag Ryan and he fouls it away. The count now, ball and a strike.
- 1:35:56One ball, one strike to Nolan Ryan. One out, we're in the top of the seventh. The Angels lead it two to one.
- 1:36:06John once again to the stretch. The pickoff plays on and Elomar back in time. Russell breaking behind, but Sandy no more than about three or four steps off of the bag.
- 1:36:16First base coach, Johnny Roseboro, yelling at Elomar to keep an eye on Russell for him.
- 1:36:22John now set, kind of a quick pitch, line drive, a looper to Buckner. He makes the catch and Elomar back in plenty of time with no play being made.
- 1:36:32So Ryan, a little looping liner to Billy Buckner right on the first base bag. Two gone now for the Angels. It'll bring up the third baseman, Bill Grabarkowicz.
- 1:36:47McMullen now moves back at third, about three steps behind the bag. John to the stretch, checks Elomar. The pitch, Lanes Grabarkowicz back inside for ball one.
- 1:37:00Now a bunch of wind swirls around home plate, really coming through there now, and Grabarkowicz spinning out of the way, letting the dust fly by.
- 1:37:15Now Bill back in the box as John on the rubber checking signs with Jager Grabarkowicz steps out again and gets a little dirt out of his eye, now steps back in.
- 1:37:26John to the stretch, checks Elomar. The next pitch swung on and missed, strike one. Grabarkowicz trying to hit the ball the opposite way.
- 1:37:33Lopes giving him a lot of room to hit between the hole at first and second.
- 1:37:43John once again, Lopes jockeying back Elomar. The next pitch, checks swing, grounded over to the Angels dugout.
- 1:37:52One ball, two strikes to Grabarkowicz.
- 1:37:58Grabby this afternoon walked, hit into a double play and doubled.
- 1:38:09John wipes off a sign now, goes to the stretch, checks Elomar. The one, two pitch, Kerpa got him looking, Carl strike three, Grabarkowicz knew it.
- 1:38:17That retires the Angels in the seventh. No runs, no hits, no errors, one man left. And the score after six and a half, it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 1:38:28When Standard Oil selects a new marina along the Chevron way, they keep in mind what kind of services people want and need after a long day on the water.
- 1:38:36That's why most Chevron marinas are near interesting, entertaining things for the whole family, dad, mom, and the kids.
- 1:38:43For instance, many Chevron marinas feature gourmet restaurants or hamburger stands, luxurious hotels or tourist cabins or campgrounds.
- 1:38:52Some even have golf courses nearby. And of course, while you're enjoying all the interesting activities,
- 1:38:57it's good to know that your boat is being looked after by the men who've made a career out of professional personalized marine service,
- 1:39:04the marine dealers along the Chevron way. Stop by a Chevron marina and pick up a free marine cruising guide.
- 1:39:10It'll show you locations and facilities of all the Chevron marinas in your area.
- 1:39:15Knowing where they are and what they offer can be a big help when you're planning your boating trip.
- 1:39:20Chevron marinas, they're great places to tie up your boat all along the Chevron way.
- 1:39:26Ken McMullen will lead it off for the Dodgers as we move to the last of the seventh. The Angels lead it 2-1.
- 1:39:34McMullen this afternoon. Kenny having a rough day, struck out twice.
- 1:39:38First pitch is a pop line into short right field. Stanton coming on now stops and moves back and makes the catch for at number one.
- 1:39:47One pitch, one out. And it'll bring up the catcher, Steve Yeager.
- 1:39:54Nolan Ryan in his final tune-up for Friday night's opener with the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:40:00We certainly hope that we'll see a lot of you out at the big A.
- 1:40:05Opening night, Kansas City Royals, a lot of excitement.
- 1:40:10Ryan Wines and the first pitch to Yeager drops inside for ball one.
- 1:40:15Ryan checks down with Stevenson into the windup and a 1-0 pitch and that drops him out of there, a breaking pitch up over the head of Yeager.
- 1:40:22A lot of excitement as Kansas City comes in Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- 1:40:28The Angels are off Monday and the Minnesota Twins come in for two days.
- 1:40:32Two 0-pitch fastball called strike.
- 1:40:35Good pitch over the outside corner. On deck, the shortstop, Bill Russell.
- 1:40:45Ryan Wines and now time is called as Yeager steps out.
- 1:40:52And again, as we stated before, the one rule that is really not enforced whatsoever.
- 1:40:58Once that's done, the game is over.
- 1:41:01The one rule that is really not enforced whatsoever.
- 1:41:05Once that pitcher goes into his motion, the hitter is not supposed to be able to step out.
- 1:41:10Two 1-pitch and he went around. Yes, sir, says home plate umpire Chris Felikoudis.
- 1:41:16Yeager trying to hold up on a high fastball.
- 1:41:21The 2-2 pitch by Ryan, once again up high, this time taking ball three.
- 1:41:28Yeager takes the count out, three and two.
- 1:41:30Ryan Wines, here's the 3-2 pitch, checks swing and it's fouled up to the third deck.
- 1:41:36And the count remains, three and two.
- 1:41:49Ryan checks his time with Stevenson. The 3-2 pitch is hit off the hands foul coming back.
- 1:41:55And a count, still three balls and two strikes.
- 1:42:03Bill Russell down in the on deck circle. Ryan now stands out behind the man on the grass, now moves up onto the rubber.
- 1:42:10And will check sides with Johnny Stevenson. Does so, Wines, here's the 3-2 pitch.
- 1:42:16That got him looking, called strike three, curveball, dropped in and over and Yeager knew it.
- 1:42:23The fifth strikeout by Ryan this afternoon and it will bring up the shortstop, Bill Russell.
- 1:42:29Russell has flied to right and grounded to third, 0-2. Bill hitting 3-16 coming into today's game.
- 1:42:37Ryan Wines in the first pitch, fouled away, strike one.
- 1:42:43Nolan now gets a new ball from home plate umpire Chris Felikoudis back out on the grass area behind the rubber, behind the mound.
- 1:42:52Gets his side from Stevenson. Wines, the next pitch is popped to the right side, O'Curl foul going back and out of play behind the angel dugout.
- 1:43:050-2 to Russell. On deck we have a pinch hitter, Joe Ferguson out for pitcher Tommy John.
- 1:43:16Ryan Wines, the two strike pitch, curveball just misses. Count now, one and two, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:43:26Here's the 1-2 pitch, fastball, line drive, right field base hit.
- 1:43:31Lee Stanton right there gets the ball back into Sandy Alomar.
- 1:43:35So Bill Russell has the second hit of the afternoon for the Dodgers, a line drive single between Alomar and Spencer.
- 1:43:43On deck, number 13, Joe Ferguson.
- 1:43:51Joe Ferguson now will come on and he'll hit for the pitcher Tommy John.
- 1:43:57Ferguson having a great spring hitting.367. The first pitch by Ryan swung on and missed, strike one.
- 1:44:04Ferguson been sitting over there watching all those fastballs and he took a real good swing at that one.
- 1:44:12Leads the Dodgers and RBI's with 12, has a couple home runs.
- 1:44:16There goes Russell, the pitcher calls strike to throw to second. They get him.
- 1:44:21Right on the money, the throw from Johnny Stevenson and the Alomar covering and Russell cut down stealing.
- 1:44:29And that retires the Dodgers in the seventh. No runs are hit, no errors, nobody left.
- 1:44:35And the score after seven complete, it's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 1:44:41From Lexington, Massachusetts to Lexington, Kentucky, all across America for that matter.
- 1:45:02The famous team of Budweiser Clydesdales brings out something in people that's, well it's hard to explain.
- 1:45:09It's not just nostalgia, not just an appreciation for beautifully matched horses and all the trappings.
- 1:45:15There's more to it than that. More like what a real Budweiser drinker feels about the beer he drinks.
- 1:45:21He just knows that brewing beer right does make a difference.
- 1:45:27I say Budweiser, you've said it all.
- 1:45:42We move now to the top of the eighth with the Angels leading it two to one.
- 1:45:46A new pitcher for the Dodgers, Doug Rowe, coming on to work inning number eight.
- 1:45:51And we're here to tell you all the action nears death.
- 1:45:54That's been quite a ball game and great pitching by Nolan Ryan.
- 1:45:58For the Angels, giving up just the two singles through seven innings.
- 1:46:01And for the Angels, that has to be about the best news that they've heard since Frank Robinson got back in the lineup.
- 1:46:07However short live that experience was.
- 1:46:11In the eighth inning, Bobby Valentine leads it off to the Angels.
- 1:46:15Valentine, a single and a walk, he's one for two.
- 1:46:17The Angels got their two runs in the very first inning, a couple of walks, and then a two run single by Jim Spencer.
- 1:46:23And the Dodgers got their run without the aid of a base hit, a walk to Lopes, a ground out, a wild pitch, and Lopes scored on Buckner's long sacrifice live.
- 1:46:31Valentine, right-handed hitter.
- 1:46:34Pitched by the left-hander, check swing, and the strike.
- 1:46:41The left-hander Rowe, R-A-U.
- 1:46:45P-6-2 and 1-75, South Carolinian, although he makes his home now in Columbus, Texas.
- 1:46:54The Angels to the Dodgers one, Rowe kicks and fires, curve low, one and one.
- 1:47:01It's a change of battery, Ferguson also into the game.
- 1:47:05Replacing Yeager, McMullen, Russell, Lopes, and Buckner on the infield with Joshua Davis and Crawford in the outfield.
- 1:47:14Pitched by Rowe, low, two and one.
- 1:47:19Not very often anymore do you see Major League Outfield with three left-handed throwers, but that's the case today for the Dodgers.
- 1:47:29Two and one, Bobby Valentine, Vada Pinson, then Doug Howard to follow.
- 1:47:33The Angels got just five hits and their two runs off Tommy John, who struck out six and walked five in his seven innings of work.
- 1:47:39That has to please the Dodgers.
- 1:47:41The pitch swung on, bounced on one big hop to third, McMullen has it, his throw in plenty of time.
- 1:47:51One out here is Vada Pinson.
- 1:47:53Pinson with a fielder's choice of one single and a ground out, one for three.
- 1:48:01John had seven strikeouts and five walks, five hits, the two runs were earned.
- 1:48:12Rowe much more deliberate than either Ryan or Tommy John.
- 1:48:20He faces the left-handed swinging Vada Pinson.
- 1:48:23Here it comes, curveball way outside.
- 1:48:27In the Angel bullpen, Terry Willshosen, side-arming right-hander.
- 1:48:33Ryan has gone longer than any time this spring and certainly for Tommy John, he's gone seven innings today, he's gone six all spring.
- 1:48:40Fats ball hit the outside corner at the knees, one and one.
- 1:48:43Rowe last year at Albuquerque, he won 14 and lost only three games.
- 1:48:52He winds, here's the pitch, swung on a high fly ball and shallow right-center, Davis easing toward the line, glasses down, he makes the catch.
- 1:49:02Willie kind of shielding himself from the sun, lifting that left shoulder to turn himself away from the sun and make that catch.
- 1:49:13Two away, left fielder Doug Howard is 0 for 3, struck out twice.
- 1:49:19Yellow ballots being passed to us for the Lefty Phillips Award and the Fresco-Thompson Award.
- 1:49:24Howard swings and fouls it out of the glove of Joe Ferguson.
- 1:49:27California Angels baseball brought to you by Chevrolet, taking yourself out to the ballgame much more enjoyable when you drive a Chevrolet Chevelle.
- 1:49:35Chevelle, very strong in the ride and handling department this year, quick, responsive, smooth.
- 1:49:41New suspension and wider stance, test drive a Chevelle Malibu or Chevelle Laguna.
- 1:49:46High with a fastball and Howard able to hold back on the swing.
- 1:49:50One ball, one strike, two outs known on Angel eighth inning and the Angels hanging on to a 2-1 lead.
- 1:49:55Both Angel runs and the lone Dodger runs scored back in the first inning.
- 1:49:59The pitch, low, two balls and a strike.
- 1:50:04Now the two top pitchers in this series without question, Nolan Ryan and Al Downing and since Downing mowed down 22 in a row,
- 1:50:13a vote for him for the Lefty Phillips Award as the top pitcher in the series.
- 1:50:16Curveball grounded up the middle off the glove of Rao and by Russell into center field.
- 1:50:20So Howard takes a big turn at first and holds as Davis hurries the ball in.
- 1:50:24Howard with his first hit, the sixth by the Angels in the game.
- 1:50:31And here's Jim Spencer.
- 1:50:33Almost didn't get to vote for the most valuable player.
- 1:50:36My ballot for the Fresco Thompson Memorial Award had designs on going to San Fernando by way of the latest win curve.
- 1:50:45Jim Spencer, he knocked in both Angel runs with that line single to center back in the first inning.
- 1:50:51One for three for Jim.
- 1:50:54Left-hander against left-hander.
- 1:50:56Howard does not have good speed, about average.
- 1:50:58Buckner holding him on the pitch.
- 1:51:00Swung on, bounced foul.
- 1:51:01Buckner trying to knock it down in front of John Rosedro in the first base coaching box.
- 1:51:06Well, it's really tough to pick the outstanding player in this series.
- 1:51:11There have been very few players to have played in all three games.
- 1:51:15And there's no obvious standout.
- 1:51:21But we're going to be provincial and if the Angels win today, we're going to vote for an Angel.
- 1:51:25Swung on and missed. Spencer couldn't find the slow curve. 0-2.
- 1:51:31In terms of on-base percentage, Grabakowicz on base three times.
- 1:51:40Four, five times in the series.
- 1:51:44The pitch inside with a fastball. 1-2.
- 1:51:49Friday night, Grabakowicz two hits, Barry had two.
- 1:51:51Spencer an RBI single, so he's knocked in three runs in the series to lead the Angels.
- 1:51:55Jim Spencer, they had a Pinsonetta hit. Sandy Alomar was two for four.
- 1:52:02The pitch fouled to the screen.
- 1:52:04So Alomar, long fly today, a walk and a hit.
- 1:52:09He's three for six in the series.
- 1:52:11Jim Brewer now throwing in the bullpen for the Dodgers.
- 1:52:13The pace of the game is slowed considerably with Doug Rowland.
- 1:52:17The attendance today, 21,099.
- 1:52:23So the three-game series drawing near 60,000.
- 1:52:26Pitch, swung on a long drive to right field, down the line, hooking foul.
- 1:52:30And that's way back into the second deck.
- 1:52:33Boy, Spencer got all of that but was a bit out in front.
- 1:52:39Howard at first base, two outs here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:52:46The Dodgers in the series, Bill Russell with five hits.
- 1:52:53He leads all the players.
- 1:52:55Pop fly, shortstop Russell backpedaling into the outfield and he makes the catch.
- 1:53:00And the inning is over.
- 1:53:02No runs, a hit, and a man left for the Angels.
- 1:53:05And after seven and a half innings of play, the score remains the Angels two, the Dodgers one.
- 1:53:12When you're enjoying an airline flight, you don't always stop to think about why it's so good,
- 1:53:16but the people at Continental do.
- 1:53:18They take pride in their business.
- 1:53:20In fact, at Continental, pride is the good idea behind all their good ideas for you.
- 1:53:24Good ideas that have been a lot to keep people happy.
- 1:53:27For example, Continental passengers were the first to enjoy hot meals and coats,
- 1:53:32the first to be offered an economy class fare and an adult standby fare.
- 1:53:37Another result of pride is the special willingness on the part of Continental's people
- 1:53:41to do all those little extras for you that can make a flight so nice.
- 1:53:45These kinds of things are what they're talking about when the Continental people say pride gets things done.
- 1:53:50They think it really does, and evidently so do their passengers.
- 1:53:54Seven out of ten people who fly Continental are people who have flown Continental before.
- 1:53:59So the next time you have a chance, fly with Continental.
- 1:54:02See for yourself how pride gets things done.
- 1:54:05Continental airline, the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 1:54:11With a change of battery in the last inning, Joe Ferguson was inserted into the ninth spot in the batting order.
- 1:54:18He leads off for the Dodgers to be followed by Dave Lopes and then Von Joshua.
- 1:54:23Ferguson's strong right-handed hitter, pitched by Ryan, foul back.
- 1:54:29Power against power.
- 1:54:3521,099 today.
- 1:54:38There were 19,000 plus last night at the Big A and over 16,000 on Friday night.
- 1:54:46Line by Ryan, one strike pitch, fouled in the same spot.
- 1:54:49Two strikes on Joe Ferguson.
- 1:54:54He's the spring, has a couple of home runs.
- 1:55:04He's the leading Dodger hitter, an average 367 this spring.
- 1:55:09The pitch, just outside, one and two.
- 1:55:12So Nolan Ryan stretching out into his eighth inning.
- 1:55:15He looks ready to go for the opener Friday night against the Kansas City Royals at the Big A.
- 1:55:20The pitch, curve ball, gets him looking, strike three.
- 1:55:25Ryan's sixth strike out of the game.
- 1:55:28Brings up Dave Lopes.
- 1:55:33Nolan Ryan Friday night against the Royals of Kansas City, and we hope you'll join us from Anaheim Stadium.
- 1:55:40Big fireworks show after the game and all the passing tree of opening night.
- 1:55:45The pitch to Lopes, he squares, bunts, and it goes off him. He's out.
- 1:55:48He was out of the batter's box, hit by his own batted ball, and Lopes is rolled out.
- 1:55:54He bunned the ball. He had left the batter's box when it hit the dirt in front of home plate and kicked right back into the leg of Lopes.
- 1:56:01So he's out, gives a put out to the catcher, John Stevenson.
- 1:56:06Two outs and Von Joshua, he's got the power to tie it with one swing that steps up. He's 0 for 3 today.
- 1:56:17It's been quite a pitching job by Ryan, two singles through nearly eight innings.
- 1:56:22The pitch, high pop, fly out of play. A little late on the swing, and it lets it back into the upper blue level.
- 1:56:30A reminder that down in Palm Springs tomorrow, the Angels and the Oakland A's, it'll be Clyde Wright.
- 1:56:35It'll be fun to see that game because they'll experiment with those yellow baseballs,
- 1:56:39and we hope those of you down in the desert area will come out and see us tomorrow or Tuesday and Wednesday when the Angels host Milwaukee.
- 1:56:45The Marines just off the outside corner, 1 and 1.
- 1:56:54The 1-1 pitch, strike, and Joshua was bailing out of the batter's box because a big windstorm had hit home plate,
- 1:57:01but the pitch was already on its way and there was no chance for the plate umpire to call time.
- 1:57:06They're going telekotas, but he couldn't call time with the ball already on its way to the plate.
- 1:57:12The back tie had not asked for time. No way he could see the ball with all that wind and dirt flying.
- 1:57:19Paper Rappers now running the course across the diamond from first to third,
- 1:57:25although the wind is blowing toward right field. The currents during the paper is the other way around home plate.
- 1:57:30Swung on in this, strike three on a curveball, and Ryan runs off the mound.
- 1:57:35He gets the Dodgers in order in the eighth inning, logs two more strikeouts to run his total to seven and through eight innings.
- 1:57:41It's the Angels two and the Dodgers one.
- 1:57:44Seventy-three Chevelle by Chevrolet. It looks different because it is different.
- 1:57:49Different outside with pillared hardtop design that we call colonnade styling, increased visibility area,
- 1:57:56double panel roof for strength and quiet, and a new hydraulic front bumper system.
- 1:58:01Seventy-three Chevelle by Chevrolet. Different in the smooth way it rides and handles with an improved suspension,
- 1:58:08a wider stance, front disc brakes. Seventy-three Chevelle by Chevrolet.
- 1:58:14Different inside with a handsome new interior that features full foam cushion seats
- 1:58:19and more backseat legroom than any Chevelle before.
- 1:58:23The seventy-three Chevelles by Chevrolet, Chevelle Malibu, and the new top-of-the-line Chevelle Laguna.
- 1:58:30They look different because they are different. Get the message?
- 1:58:35Chevrolet to the
- 1:58:41Chevrolet!
- 1:58:45Doug Rowe to pitch the ninth inning against the Angels will face Lee Stanton, Sandy Elomar, and John Stephenson.
- 1:58:52And they haven't picked up our ballots yet. And with Ryan's pitching through eight innings,
- 1:58:56he's gone farther than anyone else in this series. And certainly it has been his pitching that has kept the Angels in front today two to one.
- 1:59:02He has not had a big lead to lean on. He's allowed only two hits. That's the number of hits.
- 1:59:07And runs a lot by downing last night and less than eight innings. So we're going to give our pitching vote to Nolan Ryan on the strength of his performance today.
- 1:59:14Stanton swings and misses strike one. And we're going to vote for Bill Russell as the outstanding player,
- 1:59:20although it just is very tough to pick out one person that was a standout in this three-game series.
- 1:59:25There's a loafer behind first, slicing foul by about eight feet and down into the corner it goes.
- 1:59:32But Russell, the only player to hit in each of the three games, with the exception of one bad throw, has come up with some very nice plays at shortstop.
- 1:59:45The Angels, two of the Dodgers, one. Two runs, six hits, one error for the Angels. One run, two hits, no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:59:52Angel bullpen is busy. A left-hander, right-hander throwing. We'll see whether Ryan tries to work the full nine.
- 1:59:58The pitch, strike, out in the outside corner, and Stanton takes the long walk, and we pause right here for station identification.
- 2:00:06This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 2:00:09This is person-to-person FM radio, KXTC 92.3, Glendale, Phoenix, Arizona,
- 2:00:14transmitting from the tower with the power top to Hotel Westward Ho in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
- 2:00:23Sandy Alomar, one for two today, a line single to left field. He also had a long out to right and walk.
- 2:00:29Batting right-handed against Doug Rowe. The pitch, high with a fastball, ball one.
- 2:00:34John Stevenson on deck. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dodgers will have their big guns up. Billy Buckner, Willie Davis, and Willie Crawford.
- 2:00:43The pitch by Rowe, strike, outside corner fastball. So a three left-handed hitter scheduled, Bobby Winkles may go to the bullpen.
- 2:00:51For the left-hander, Steve Barber. Lloyd Allen also working with Barber in the right field corner.
- 2:00:58Wind by Rowe, the pitch, swung on and missed. Alomar dropping the bat in the batter's box as he followed through on a swing.
- 2:01:07A ball and two strikes on Sandy Alomar. Brown now pitching from the shadows of the upper deck.
- 2:01:14Kicks the pitch off the corner, outside fastball, two and two.
- 2:01:21Dick, just watching all the excitement in this three-game series between the Dodgers and the Angels,
- 2:01:27you've got to think that really it would be great if realignment ever came along. It would really add, I think, a lot to the game.
- 2:01:33You bet. Fastball away, three and two. Now the fans are the ones who would benefit so very much.
- 2:01:40You can just feel, there's a lot of, you can just see a lot of little wagers going here. A Dodger fan against an Angel fan.
- 2:01:45And they'll go back to work and argue about it the rest of the year.
- 2:01:48Outside corner, says Pellicotis, and Alomar on his way to first base is called back by Pellicotis' strike call.
- 2:01:56So Rao gets Stanton and Alomar looking on strikes. And here's John Stevenson. He's walked, lined into a double play, and grounded out.
- 2:02:05And the same would be true of San Francisco against Oakland.
- 2:02:10The two Chicago teams. Oh my. The pitch. Fly ball into right field, very high. Out goes the second baseman, Loaf.
- 2:02:18He wants it. He's got it. And Doug Rao works a very easy ninth inning. One, two, three, the Angels go.
- 2:02:24And now to the bottom of the ninth, Buckner, Davis, and Crawford, with the Angels leading two to one.
- 2:02:30Along the Sheffield Way.
- 2:02:36Different people, different roads.
- 2:02:40Different needs with each new day along.
- 2:02:45Along the Sheffield Way.
- 2:02:49One thing we've learned over the years at Standard Oil is to not put any hard and fast limits on that word service.
- 2:02:56Because we keep finding more and more things that it covers.
- 2:03:00Everyone's got their own particular needs. And we make a lot of friends just by meeting those needs as they come up.
- 2:03:10Helping people, making friends. Meeting neighbors, meeting needs. People really come.
- 2:03:21Along the Sheffield Way.
- 2:03:26Along the Sheffield Way.
- 2:03:33Dolan Ryan is going to attempt to become the first Angel pitcher this spring to go the nine inning distance.
- 2:03:40He's out there warming up with catcher John Stevenson. Behind him is Robachowicz, Valentine, Alomar, and Spencer.
- 2:03:46In the outfield, Howard, and left. Henson in center. And Leroy Stanton in right field.
- 2:03:51The two hits by the Dodgers. A single by Tommy John punched to right field in the third.
- 2:03:56And a line single from Bill Russell to right field in the seventh inning.
- 2:04:00Ryan has struck out seven. He has walked four but has not walked anyone since back in the third inning.
- 2:04:09The only run given up without the aid of it. The leadoff walk to Lopes.
- 2:04:13Ground out to Joshua. Wild picks and then Buckner's long sacrifice fly back in the first inning.
- 2:04:18And here's Billy Buckner to start it off. He's 0 for 1 today. Sacrifice fly, a walk, and a fly ball to left.
- 2:04:24So Ryan will have to get out the Dodgers' best left-handed hitters to win it for the Angels.
- 2:04:29He's into motion, the pitch. Right. He starts Buckner with a curveball.
- 2:04:3721 down to 99 at Dodger Stadium. And many pulling now for a Dodger last inning rally.
- 2:04:42The pitch, another curve upstairs, 1 and 1. The wind again will aid a ball pulled down the line in right field.
- 2:04:50So the left-handed hitters do have a little boost from that wind. And it's whipping the Flaniks again.
- 2:04:56The 1-1 pitch, swung on in there. Ryan challenged Buckner with a high fastball.
- 2:05:07The Angels 2-run, 6-hits. The Dodgers 1-run, 2-hits off Nolan Ryan.
- 2:05:13Ryan pulling at the bill of his cap, then tucks at his glove, rocks in a motion.
- 2:05:16The 1-2 pitch. Fly ball, slice to left. It'll be out of the reach of any Angel back into the seats.
- 2:05:22Robach was racing over to watch it fall in about 15 rows.
- 2:05:29Freddie Federico, the Angels' trainer, jogging out onto the mound for the second time to look at Ryan's pitching hand,
- 2:05:40whether it's a fingernail or a blister, some problem.
- 2:05:44Sometimes Ryan develops that heavy callus on one of his pitching fingers, the index or middle finger, and needs to just have that rough skin, the dead skin, cut away.
- 2:06:04A ball and two strikes on Bill Buckner. Bottom of the ninth inning, 2-1 Angels, the pitch.
- 2:06:08Fly ball to center field. Pinson drifts back, now comes up a couple of steps and makes the catch.
- 2:06:14So Buckner flies out to straightaway center field. One out and here's center fielder Willie Davis.
- 2:06:19Davis had his 10-game hitting streak snapped last night when he went 0-5 and he's 0-3 today.
- 2:06:25So he's good.
- 2:06:27Homer on Friday night.
- 2:06:32Willie Crawford, who's homered last evening, on deck.
- 2:06:37Ryan into motion, kicks and fires, hung on and foul back.
- 2:06:42Jim Spencer guarding the line at first base, trying to take away the extra base hit, but that opens up the area between Spencer and second baseman Sandy Alomar.
- 2:06:52Stanton very deep in right field. Davis backs out.
- 2:07:02Ryan pitching from the shadows. They've turned the lights on now at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:07:07The infield area now pretty dark.
- 2:07:09And Willie Deah going to make sure that that wind stops blowing before he steps in there.
- 2:07:13It's a gust of wind that's taking a lot of that crushed red brick with it into the stands in the third base side.
- 2:07:20I think it's got to really be hard for those batters up there now.
- 2:07:23The shadows have gone just past the pitcher's mound, but still trying to pick that ball up against the bright sun in center field has got to be tough.
- 2:07:34The pitch? Low, one and one.
- 2:07:37That has to be a pitcher's advantage for sure.
- 2:07:42I guess anyone who is involved in photography knows that that whole problem is trying to take a picture of someone in the shadows with a bright background.
- 2:07:51And that's what the hitters trying to do, focus on that little white pill.
- 2:07:54Ryan's pitch, swung on grounded to the right side. Alomar there scoops it and gets it over to Spencer for the out.
- 2:08:01The Dodgers down to their final out here in the home half of the ninth inning and Willie Crawford strides to the plate.
- 2:08:07Crawford walk, pops up and grounded out.
- 2:08:12Ryan one out away from pitching the Angels to the freeway series title in 73.
- 2:08:19The Angels then would keep the Mayor's trophies as there was no series last year because of the baseball strike.
- 2:08:25The Angels won it two out of three in 1971. Pitched by Ryan, high with a fastball.
- 2:08:31Ryan certainly has not lost his velocity. He's finished strong, trying to close his own deal.
- 2:08:36Into motion, he kicks and delivers. High again, two and oh.
- 2:08:40Both pitches over the plate, but above the shoulders of Willie Crawford.
- 2:08:45Ken McMullen would be next.
- 2:08:53Closing in on the start of this season, Ryan's 2-0 pitch.
- 2:08:57Low, three and oh, so Crawford looks down at third base coach Tom Lasorda to see whether or not
- 2:09:04Walter Olson will give him that advantage at taking a swing at a 3-0 pitch.
- 2:09:08Here it comes, Crawford takes it all away. It's ball four low.
- 2:09:13That's the first walk by Ryan since back in the third inning, the fifth that he's allowed in the game.
- 2:09:19And I had a feeling he'd rather pitch to McMullen than Willie Crawford.
- 2:09:24But the Dodgers who like to run, also in a position of possibly being able to steal themselves
- 2:09:31into a tying run at second base situation.
- 2:09:35Well that's probably one of the things right there Jim Spencer was telling Nolan Ryan at the mound,
- 2:09:39keep an eye on Crawford over here because they'll try and get that runner in scoring position,
- 2:09:43but Nolan's got everything going for him, a right-handed hitter, right-handed pitcher, wind blowing in from left.
- 2:09:49He sets the pitch, curve is in there for a try.
- 2:09:54Big curve ball, the wind continuing to be an enemy of all the players offensively and defensively.
- 2:10:02One by one they're constantly fighting off the wind trying to hold their uniform in place.
- 2:10:06Popped up, no foul, it'll make it into the seat away from Jim Spencer beyond the angel dugout.
- 2:10:12Just back to the auxiliary scoreboard on the first base side.
- 2:10:16So it's match point for the Dodgers and Ken McMullen.
- 2:10:19Two strikes, two outs, bottom of the ninth inning, Crawford the tying run at first base.
- 2:10:24Two on the angels lead, Manny Moda's in the on deck circle.
- 2:10:28Here's the pitch, just upstairs, one and two.
- 2:10:32Ryan as he followed through and he had his best fastball on its way to the plate was taking that step toward the dugout
- 2:10:38hoping he'd get Pellicotis to call strike three.
- 2:10:41Ryan sets the one-two pitch, grounded foul.
- 2:10:44Far end of the angels, I got Kerms out beyond the foul line into third territory where Sandy Alomar picks it up.
- 2:10:52Well, it's been a rough spring training season for Bobby Winkles in terms of wins and losses,
- 2:10:58but if the angels could beat the rival Dodgers in the freeway series that would certainly give the club a lift.
- 2:11:04The one-two pitch, foul to the screen by McMullen.
- 2:11:07And in fairness to McMullen, he's just not getting very good cuts.
- 2:11:10His back obviously must be bothering him. He's not swinging freely at all.
- 2:11:16Crawford still at first base and between each pitch he's checking with La Sorda to see whether or not the Dodgers want him to run.
- 2:11:22He leads away. The pitch, curveball just missed outside and McMullen took a pretty good pitch.
- 2:11:27Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two to one angels.
- 2:11:32Bottom of the ninth inning, the outfield playing toward right field for McMullen.
- 2:11:37Stamping way over near the line. Ryan sets. Here's the pitch.
- 2:11:42Strike three called and the angels win the freeway series as Nolan Rhyme goes all the way to beat the Dodgers on a brilliant two-hitter,
- 2:11:52giving up only two singles as the angels win on this windy Sunday at Dodgers Stadium two to one before 21,099 fans.
- 2:12:02And Nolan Rhyme with a top-pitching job of the entire spring for the angels being congratulated by his teammates and the happiest of the lot,
- 2:12:10Valentine Grabakowicz in their patting backs and shaking hands.
- 2:12:14They've come back to Dodgers Stadium and they'll leave tonight as winners.
- 2:12:18With the totals, here's nine. All right, Dick, the totals for this afternoon's game.
- 2:12:22The angels two runs on six hits. They committed one error and left six.
- 2:12:26The Dodgers one run on just two hits. They committed no errors and they left five.
- 2:12:32The winning pitcher going nine innings this afternoon and that is Nolan Rhyme.
- 2:12:37He's now evened his spring record at three apiece, three wins and three losses.
- 2:12:42The losing pitcher, Tommy John, he's now 0-2. The attendance, 21,099, a game played in two hours and 14 minutes.
- 2:12:50Nolan Rhyme, we said before, going nine innings and we'll visit with Nolan on Angel Report and that'll follow in just a moment.

- 2:16:21And it was Nolan Ryan going all the way, the first nine innings pitched by any Angel pitcher so far this spring.
- 2:16:29And looking at how the runs were scored, it all happened in the first, and from there, why, it was just 0s.
- 2:16:36In the first inning for the Angels, Grabarowicz walked.
- 2:16:40He stole second, Valentine walked, and Pinson was on in a fielder's choice with Tommy John forcing Grabarowicz at third.
- 2:16:47Then on a double steal, both runners were saved.
- 2:16:51Howard struck out in a two-out single by Jim Spencer driving in Valentine and Pinson.
- 2:16:56That counted for the Angels only two runs.
- 2:16:59In the first inning for the Dodgers, Dave Lopes opened up with a base on balls.
- 2:17:04And he went to second on a ground out, went to third on a wild pitch, scored on a fly ball, and that was the Dodgers only run.
- 2:17:11So it was 2-1, the Angels over the Dodgers, and now in the freeway series, the Angels have won 10 and the Dodgers have won 6.
- 2:17:19Nolan Ryan going nine innings this afternoon, striking out eight, walking five, allowing just one run on two hits,
- 2:17:27evening his record now at three apiece, three wins and three losses.
- 2:17:31And Nolan will be our special guest as Angel Report continues.

- 2:18:38Nolan Ryan going nine innings this afternoon, our special guest.
- 2:18:41And to start the questions, here's Dick.
- 2:18:43Congratulations, Nolan. The Angels looking for any boost that they could find.
- 2:18:47And to beat the Dodgers, the team that they're going to have to hear about, read about, and we'll talk about all season long,
- 2:18:52has to be something that warms all of you on this windy day.
- 2:18:55Well, thank you, Dick. This is a big win for me because I don't believe I've ever won a game in Dodger Stadium.
- 2:19:01Four years I was with the Mets. I pitched here every series we came in and for some reason I had some good games here,
- 2:19:08but I never could seem to win. And it was another one of those kind of games today where it was low scoring
- 2:19:14and we really had to battle for what we got. And at times it looked like I was really going to have a bad game.
- 2:19:20The first four or five innings I really struggled. I had trouble with my rhythm.
- 2:19:23My arm was somewhat stiff in the elbow and I just couldn't seem to get it going.
- 2:19:27Did you have any thoughts at all at the start of the game that you would like to go nine innings if possible?
- 2:19:32Well, I indicated earlier in the week that if I felt good and I didn't throw too many pitches,
- 2:19:37I'd like to go ahead and try to get nine under my belt. I never have done that in spring training.
- 2:19:41I know that from past experience when I do go nine innings, you know, my first game in the season,
- 2:19:47I seem to have an awful lot of stiffness and it takes me a while to recover from it.
- 2:19:50So I felt like if I could go ahead and get one in with the five days off on my hands with the opener,
- 2:19:56that I felt like I could work a little harder this week and get ready for the opening day.
- 2:20:00So let's get that straight then. This is the first time you've ever won at Dodger Stadium
- 2:20:03and this is the first time you've ever gone nine innings before the start of the season.
- 2:20:07Right.
- 2:20:08And a final question regarding Freddy Frederico's appearance at the mound in the ninth inning.
- 2:20:12What was that about?
- 2:20:13Well, I had a blister come up on my middle finger on my right hand and he came out with a needle
- 2:20:18and we went ahead and punctured it and drained it so I could go ahead and finish the game.
- 2:20:23Nolan, looking at you this afternoon, it looked as though you mentioned you were struggling in the first four or five innings.
- 2:20:28It looked as though you were having a little trouble with your breaking pitch.
- 2:20:31How was it, Don? For some reason I was either trying to overthrow it or my rhythm was off where, you know,
- 2:20:38I was having trouble with my stride. I don't know exactly what it was.
- 2:20:41I was fighting myself an awful lot during the first four innings and mainly with my curve ball.
- 2:20:46It was hanging high and then I was trying to put a little extra on the fast ball and doing so I was having trouble getting it over.
- 2:20:54Now that you have, you'll have four days off right now between the opener
- 2:20:58and you mentioned you do get a little stiff in the spring going the long distances.
- 2:21:02What will be your plans now the rest of the week in Palm Springs?
- 2:21:06Well, Tuesday I'll probably throw batting practice and doing a lot of extra running these first couple of days
- 2:21:13and try to work the stiffness out early so that my arm will bounce back.
- 2:21:18And I think if it seems like it's still going to be a little stiff Tuesday then I'll probably come back and throw again Wednesday.
- 2:21:25Do you have any kind of preparation done to your arm now after you've pitched? What is your routine?
- 2:21:31Well, as far as after the game I'll just have it melt down and having put alcohol on.
- 2:21:37I really don't ice it down or any of these type of things and I just wait until the next day and start my program all over again.
- 2:21:47You mean what you're trying to say is you still have youth on your side?
- 2:21:50If that's what it is then yes, that's my procedure.
- 2:21:55I know that you see Faranowski on the table and getting his arm stretched and so far I've been fortunate not having to have Freddie do that but I'm sure someday I will.
- 2:22:07Nolan, Don Drysdale and many of the Dodgers were commenting before the game they have never seen it so windy at Dodger Stadium as today.
- 2:22:15How much of a factor was that in your pitching performance?
- 2:22:18It didn't affect any ball hit in the air but in terms of your pitching, what's that a factor?
- 2:22:23Well, naturally it just makes it tough all over the pitch and I think that the hitters were more at a disadvantage than I was.
- 2:22:31I know when I hit myself I had trouble seeing the dust blowing up around home plate.
- 2:22:36I think also it may have had a tendency to make the curve ball ride a little more.
- 2:22:40It didn't have a good break on it and I don't know if it affected the fast ball any or not.
- 2:22:45It might have made it ride a little.
- 2:22:48Well, Nolan, congratulations. A great 9th inning performance.
- 2:22:51Al Downing was named the most valuable pitcher in this series but the ballots were cast around the 7th or 8th inning.
- 2:22:57I think if everyone had waited until the end then they would have named you and regardless the Angels of the Freeway Series champions.
- 2:23:03Thanks to your pitching today and Jim Spencer's two run single and let's hope that's an omen and you can come right back on Friday night with another strong performance.
- 2:23:10Well, thank you, Dick. I hope we do.
- 2:23:12And then Ryan, our guest, and we'll continue with a look at the exhibition baseball scoreboard from Dodger Stadium as Angel Report continues in just a moment.
