- 0:11Hello friends. It is Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Thursday. It is the last day of the
- 0:18season. It's the end of August, and
- 0:22spring is tomorrow or autumn, wherever you find yourself on
- 0:26this fair planet of ours. And we are continuing through
- 0:30Isaiah. And it is a lot about war at the
- 0:34moment and these Syrians bearing down on this teeny tiny little
- 0:39nation of Judah. And in our current climate, we
- 0:44we think of what's happening in Eastern Europe with the Russians
- 0:48invading the Ukrainians. And you know, we, we hear about
- 0:53the president of Ukraine approaching countries saying,
- 0:55please, can you help us? Can you give us things that will
- 0:58help us in this battle? And it's quite amazing to think
- 1:02that we are the the president of our own lives.
- 1:05And who do we go to when the chips are down and the oppressor
- 1:10is oppressing, Where do we turn to get our supplies to get what
- 1:14we need? And this section of Isaiah just
- 1:19encourages us that the place that we turn to is our God, who
- 1:24is always ready and willing to help and in fact has already won
- 1:29the war. So let us hear what Isaiah is
- 1:32going to continue to speak to them about Assyria as we read
- 1:35together Isaiah chapter 33. What sorrow awaits you as
- 1:51Syrians who have destroyed others but have never been
- 1:54destroyed yourselves? You betray others that you have
- 1:58never been betrayed. When you are done destroying,
- 2:02you will be destroyed. When you are done betraying, you
- 2:06will be betrayed. But Lord, be merciful to us, for
- 2:11we have waited for you. Be our strong arm each day and
- 2:16our salvation. In times of trouble.
- 2:18The enemy runs at the sound of your voice.
- 2:21When you stand up, the nation's flee.
- 2:24Just as caterpillars and locusts strip the fields and vines, so
- 2:29the fallen army of Assyria will be stripped.
- 2:33Though the Lord is very great and lives in heaven, he will
- 2:37make Jerusalem his home of justice and righteousness.
- 2:41In that day he will be your sure foundation, providing a rich
- 2:47store of salvation, wisdom and knowledge.
- 2:51The fear of the Lord will be your treasure.
- 2:55But now your brave warriors weep in public.
- 2:59Your ambassadors of peace cry in bitter disappointment.
- 3:04Your roads are deserted. No one travels them any more.
- 3:08The Assyrians have broken their peace treaty and care nothing
- 3:11for the promises they made before witnesses.
- 3:15They have no respect for anyone. The land of Israel Wilts in
- 3:20mourning. Lebanon Withers with shame.
- 3:24The plain of Sharon is now of wilderness.
- 3:28Bashan and Carmel have been plundered.
- 3:32But the Lord says, now I will stand up.
- 3:37Now I will show my power. And might.
- 3:41You, Assyrians, produce nothing but dry grass and stubble.
- 3:45Your own breath will turn into fire and consume you.
- 3:49Your people will be burned up completely like Thorn Bush has
- 3:53cut down and tossed in a fire. Listen to what I have done.
- 3:58You nations far away and you that are near acknowledge my
- 4:03might. The sinners in Jerusalem shake
- 4:06with fear. Terror seizes the godless.
- 4:10Who can live with this devouring fire?
- 4:12They cry. Who can survive this all
- 4:15consuming fire? Those who are honest and fair,
- 4:19who refuse to profit by fraud, who stand far away from bribes,
- 4:24who refused to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their
- 4:28eyes to all enticement to do wrong.
- 4:31These are the ones who will dwell on high the rocks of the
- 4:35mountains will be their fortress, food will be supplied
- 4:38to them, and they will have water in abundance.
- 4:43Your eyes will see the king in all his splendor, and you will
- 4:48see a land that stretches into the distance.
- 4:51You will think back to this time of terror, asking where are the
- 4:56Assyrian officers who counted our towers?
- 4:59Where are the bookkeepers who recorded the plunder taken from
- 5:03our fallen city? You will no longer see these
- 5:06fierce, violent people with their strange, unknown language.
- 5:11Instead, you will see Zion as a place of holy festivals.
- 5:16You will see Jerusalem, a city quiet and secure.
- 5:21It will be like a tent whose ropes are taut and whose stakes
- 5:25are firmly fixed. The Lord will be our mighty one.
- 5:30He will be like a wide river of protection that no enemy can
- 5:34cross, that no enemy ship can sail upon.
- 5:38For the Lord is our judge, our lawgiver, and our King.
- 5:42He will care for us and save us. The enemy's sails hang loose on
- 5:48broken masts with useless tackle.
- 5:51Their treasure will be divided by the people of God.
- 5:54Even the lame will take their share.
- 5:57The people of Israel will no longer say we are sick and
- 6:01helpless, for the Lord will forgive their sins.
- 6:16You are an awfully big God, so much bigger than we can imagine.
- 6:21And we read about your engagement in this time and
- 6:23place so long ago and so far away in the history.
- 6:27Yet there you were, as vivid, as real, and as engaged as you are
- 6:32today in our life and every other point in history, passed
- 6:37and yet to come. You are an enormous God, so much
- 6:42bigger than we can imagine. But here you are in this time
- 6:49and place, with us, wings stretched around us, to gather
- 6:54us in like little chicks in their protection of their
- 6:58mother's wing. Thank you for your closeness,
- 7:05for the intimacy of your love and protection, that each day
- 7:11you carry us through the trials, the burdens, and the victories.
- 7:17You are incredible in ways that we just can't wrap our heads
- 7:21around, but we'll take it. We are grateful and we love you.
- 7:27We praise you. And all this in the name of
- 7:29Jesus. Amen.
