Latest / DEWA Podcasts / DEWA’s transmission investments exceed AED 10 billion as Dubai network expansion accelerates • Eight 132 kV and one 400 kV substations commissioned in H1 2026
Transcript
- 0:00Dubai's continuous urban growth relies heavily
- 0:03on, well, an incredibly robust infrastructure.
- 0:06Right. Today, we're examining a major update
- 0:10regarding strategic investments in the city's
- 0:13electricity transmission network. Hmm. These
- 0:16investments have now crossed the, well, 10 billion
- 0:19UAE Durham mark. That massive level of investment
- 0:22is driven by the directives of His Highness Sheikh
- 0:25Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Yeah. His vision
- 0:28positions Dubai as a global benchmark for continuous
- 0:31growth and, you know, infrastructure quality.
- 0:34Wow. To give you a sense of the scale, during
- 0:37the first half of 2026 alone, things moved fast.
- 0:41Okay. Eight substations of 132 kV were actually
- 0:46commissioned. Those eight substations represent
- 0:48a total conversion capacity of 1 ,200 megavolt
- 0:52amperes. Hmm. They were completed at a cost of
- 0:55970 million dirhams. Right. And they required
- 0:59laying down 20 kilometers of transmission cables.
- 1:02That's just one piece of the puzzle, though.
- 1:05Yeah. There was also the commissioning of a massive
- 1:08400 over 132 kilovolt transmission substation
- 1:12in Sayh al -Dahl. Oh, wow. It is located right
- 1:16within the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar
- 1:18Park. Okay. That specific project cost 630 million
- 1:23dirhams. Hmm. It added a staggering conversion
- 1:26capacity of 2 ,000 megavolt amperes. And it required
- 1:30constructing 117 kilometers of 400 kilovolt overhead
- 1:34transmission lines. Wow. Altogether, these infrastructure
- 1:38projects demanded over 9 million working hours.
- 1:42Yeah. They were delivered in line with the highest
- 1:44standards of efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- 1:48Right. They were completely supported by the
- 1:51latest digital technologies. The momentum isn't
- 1:54slowing down. Oh, definitely not. Currently,
- 1:57there are 65 new 132 kilovolt substations and
- 2:01one 400 kilovolt substation under active construction.
- 2:05Hmm. Over the next three years, there are plans
- 2:08to issue new tenders for more than 30 additional
- 2:10132 kilovolt substations. Okay. They also plan
- 2:14to extend 340 kilometers of underground transmission
- 2:17cables and construct two 400 kilovolt substations.
- 2:21The philosophy driving this rapid expansion was
- 2:24outlined clearly in the recent announcement.
- 2:26Yeah. In line with the objectives of the Dubai
- 2:29Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai Social Agenda
- 2:3333, we are committed to meeting current and future
- 2:36requirements, keeping in pace with growing electricity
- 2:38demand, and expanding our infrastructure as a
- 2:41key driver of economic and social development.
- 2:43We're already seeing the impact of that commitment.
- 2:46For sure. The newly commissioned substations
- 2:49cover vital areas, including meeting the power
- 2:51needs of national housing projects in Medina
- 2:53at Hind 4. Seven other substations were also
- 2:57commissioned, across districts like Al -Kairan
- 2:591st, Nad Al -Sheba 1st, and Al -Barsha South
- 3:024th. By the end of the first half of 2026, the
- 3:05network boasted 402 transmission substations
- 3:08in total. Wow. That includes 28 at the 400 kilovolt
- 3:13level and 374 at the 132 kilovolt level. Yeah.
- 3:18Furthermore, 21 new contracts were awarded for
- 3:21substations across several districts. Right.
- 3:24This was alongside contracts to extend 64 kilometers
- 3:27of cables to connect them to the main network
- 3:29at a cost of 3 billion dirhams. Now, here's a
- 3:33question we'd like you to think about. Okay.
- 3:35As green capacities reach unprecedented levels,
- 3:38well, things are shifting. Yeah. How will these
- 3:42physical power transmission milestones shape
- 3:44the ultimate blueprint for future smart cities
- 3:46globally?
