  Being that I'm 48 years old, I have watched many of my heroes

  come and go. I've watched many heroes die or

  just simply retire, never to be seen again.

  And unfortunately, I have to experience this one once again.

  Our next social media Dave Mustang, Megadeth, ended up
• 3:19
  dropping an AI video stating that the end is near, that
• 3:24
  Megadeth is doing its final album and their final tour, and
• 3:28
  that will be that. And oof, that's my goodness.

  Well, let me tell you a little bit how I found out about
• 3:40
  Megadeth and how I got into them.
• 3:42
  I'm not only going to tell you how they influenced me, but I'm
• 3:45
  going to tell you how they influenced my brother Justin
• 3:48
  Keene. And my brother Justin Keen
• 3:50
  actually has a a band that he originally called Black Death
• 3:56
  and the black part was hybrid Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne,

  Error, of course, and then of course Death like in Megadeth.

  Nothing to do with Metallica and any of that, but my brother
• 4:13
  actually listened and tried with all of his might to learn guitar
• 4:18
  riffs by Dave Mustang, because Dave Mustang was the ultimate
• 4:22
  guitarist. There's a lot of good guitarist
• 4:25
  out there like Steve I and Joe Satriani, but if you were to try
• 4:30
  to remember any of their songs, you wouldn't.
• 4:34
  They wouldn't come to mind. Even Maumstein, a lot of his
• 4:37
  music doesn't come to mind, but Dave put personality to his
• 4:42
  stuff and his guitar riffs were completely unique and original.
• 4:47
  There is no band out there in the world that has a technical
• 4:53
  touch or tone that Megadeth has. There's just something
• 4:58
  completely different. The way they've hits the rest,
• 5:02
  the way he plays it, absolutely unique and original.
• 5:07
  And it's not just his guitar work, his drums have always been
• 5:12
  powerful all the way back since the time of Nick Menza.
• 5:16
  And Dave is a, he's one of them type of people where you can
• 5:24
  listen to him talk all day long. He doesn't even have to hit a
• 5:28
  guitar. He doesn't even have to pick up
• 5:30
  an instrument. He's a genius and you can tell.
• 5:34
  And he's he throws off this kind of smug, arrogant thing about
• 5:39
  him. But he's one of those type of
• 5:41
  people who walks the walk and talks to talk.
• 5:44
  So you're like, yeah, he's a bad ass.
• 5:47
  So he's allowed to, you know, speak the way he does.
• 5:51
  It turned off some people, but I was like, yeah, but until you
• 5:55
  can do what they must and can do it, until you can play guitar
• 5:59
  like he does, until you can be raunchy and bad ass like he
• 6:04
  does, then you ain't got no room to bitch or complain.

  When I first heard of Megadeth, Dave Mustang, 'cause when I
• 6:12
  think of Megadeth, I think of Dave Mustang.

  All the other people who are involved, terrific, they
• 6:18
  contributed and all that, yeah, Marty Friedman, all that good
• 6:22
  stuff. But Dave Mustang is the guy that
• 6:25
  you think about the redhead lead when you're thinking of guitar
• 6:29
  work. And Megadeth, I was a young boy
• 6:33
  and my I had just met a guy at school by the name of Donny
• 6:39
  Hamilton. He ended up having me come over
• 6:42
  to his home. He wanted to show off a bunch of
• 6:45
  C DS. He showed me Peace Cells.
• 6:48
  That was the first song that I had ever heard.
• 6:50
  Peace Cells. But who's buying?
• 6:52
  And the way Dave comes off in the song, the way the music
• 6:57
  comes in with the bass line and the the metal riff just explodes
• 7:03
  into it. And he's like, what do you mean?
• 7:06
  I don't believe in God. Talk to him every day.
• 7:10
  And his attitude and personality really made the song.
• 7:14
  I don't think that I I could imagine anyone else.
• 7:19
  And I've heard lots of covers and nobody has that damn
• 7:23
  meanness and that growl that Dave Mustang does.

  There's just something absolutely unique about him.

  So I listen to that, and I listen.

  I listen to The Reckoning, Black Friday, Bad Omen, Bad Omen.

  I love the melodic introduction to that song Wake Up Dead and
• 7:46
  all this. So I'm listening to that and my
• 7:48
  friend Donnie says if you think that that's a bad ass album, you
• 7:53
  need to check out Rest in Peace and Holy Wars and all this shit,
• 7:57
  which is obviously a song about religious wars and you know,
• 8:01
  innocence being killed and all this kind of stuff.

  So he throws in this and I'm sitting here looking at these
• 8:08
  covers of Victoria standing by a For Sale sign and seeing another
• 8:12
  one where he's standing over a capsule with an alien in it.

  I'm like, wow, these two CD covers are completely different
• 8:19
  than each other except for Victoria.
• 8:21
  Obviously The Skeletons always had its look, but the covers
• 8:28
  were completely unique and it was so weird going from Peace
• 8:32
  Cells to listening to Rest in Peace because you knew you could
• 8:37
  listen to any song on Rest in Peace and any song on Peace
• 8:40
  Cells and you'd be able to differentiate.

  Dave was so damn good that you could, you could tell it was
• 8:49
  Megadeth, but Megadeth was doing something completely different.

  All the guitar work, the speed of the drums, the way it was
• 8:58
  composed, it was actually a very unique album.

  You know how you listen to a lot of bands and like ACDC and they
• 9:07
  just kind of, they sound hard ass, but they don't sound
• 9:11
  different. You can listen to any album and
• 9:14
  you would get confused about which song it's on because they
• 9:17
  all sound the same. But Megadeth, every damn CD
• 9:23
  sounded completely different than the other.

  Really. Even when you go back to the
• 9:29
  older stuff, so far so good. So what if you listen to that
• 9:33
  album and then listen to Peace Cells and Rest in Peace?
• 9:36
  It's a completely different work.
• 9:39
  It doesn't sound in any kind of way like the other albums at
• 9:43
  all, but they're all fucking incredible.

  So that day I became a big fan. On that same day I was also
• 9:56
  showed Slayer and I was showed Metallica.

  It was all the first time and I thought Metallica was good and I
• 10:03
  thought Slayer was good and all that shit.

  But there was something about Megadeth, the lyrics, the the
• 10:11
  tone. When I listened to Slayer, I
• 10:14
  just kept feeling like I was hearing a lot of the same shit.

  It was like, there was a cool intro, but the music just would
• 10:20
  like beat the shit out of it. It would like bum bum, bum, bum
• 10:26
  bum. And it didn't really go nowhere.

  And then the solos were kind of not really sure.

  At the time I was also shown Cowboys to Hell and Yarn Driven
• 10:40
  by Pantera, and I know a lot of people think that Pantera is bad
• 10:45
  ass, but besides cemetery gates I never really went.

  Oh yeah, I got to hear me some fucking Pantera.

  Trust me, when you're driving down Main Street with a fucking
• 10:57
  10 Wolfers, 12 inch Wolfers or whatever and you listen to holy

  wars compared to, you know, Cowboys from Hell or Metallica
• 11:07
  and shit, totally different fucking animal all together.

  I never understood, and all the time I listened to Megadeth, why
• 11:17
  it was that Dave felt so bad. I could understand a feeling of
• 11:22
  betrayal for a little bit, but if it wasn't for Megadeth, Dave
• 11:28
  Mustang, and Metallica getting into it, then we wouldn't have
• 11:31
  the great fucking Megadeth music that we have today.
• 11:36
  And I don't understand why Dave doesn't see that.
• 11:39
  If Dave actually realized how fucking important his music was
• 11:44
  and how good it was, he would never even think twice about
• 11:48
  what bands he was in in the past.
• 11:52
  I just can't. I can't understand that at all.

  It's like being in a band that had some cool songs and shit,

  but you went on to do something much greater.

  I really believe that Megadeth is far superior than Metallica.

  Everything about it, you know, it is what it is.

  Well, Megadeth is one of those bands where when you're pissed
• 12:24
  off or you're angry or you got a lot of shit on your mind, you're
• 12:31
  in a fucked up mood and you just feel like the world's been
• 12:34
  kicking the shit out of you. Megadeth is one of those bands
• 12:38
  that that's what you put in your CD player, that's what you
• 12:44
  listen to it. It just totally takes you out of
• 12:49
  whatever shitty mood you're in. And Megadeth, even though it's
• 12:54
  not meant to be some kind of anthem or some kind of music to
• 12:58
  like drive you up or whatever, it always brought my energy up
• 13:03
  and it made me prepare for my day.
• 13:06
  When you're getting ready to go do something challenging, or
• 13:09
  you're about to do something with obstacles and shit in your
• 13:12
  life and you hear that, or even when you're going to go to a
• 13:16
  family reunion, you know it's going to be absolute shit thrown
• 13:20
  on. Some Megadeths can really
• 13:22
  prepare you for whatever it is that's going on.

  Well, Megadeth a while back did their Countdown to Extinction
• 13:30
  tour, and I remember hearing that fucking album and that
• 13:34
  totally obviously, I'm not saying it blew the other albums
• 13:38
  away, but again, Dave Mustaine had accomplished and succeeded
• 13:42
  creating another album that was absolutely different than the
• 13:47
  others. It was fucking sick heavy.
• 13:50
  But on the other hand, it also had these really unusual effects
• 13:55
  and a lot of the songs had a completely different personality
• 13:59
  than what the others did. Like, there's nothing like
• 14:03
  Sweating Bullets or Skin in My Teeth on any of the other
• 14:07
  albums. I remember hearing a track that
• 14:10
  was on the Bill and Ted's Big Adventure album or what?
• 14:15
  No, no, no, no. It's the Bogus Journey.

  It was a second Bill and Ted, a segment where they get killed
• 14:23
  and they're fucking clones. The robot Bill and Ted and that
• 14:27
  song go to hell. Oh my goodness.

  Holy shit. That fucking song has one of the
• 14:33
  sickest bass and guitar riffs on it and the solo is just fucking
• 14:37
  madding. I remember seeing the video of
• 14:41
  that on MTV of Dave Mustang in a casket and shed and it's showing
• 14:46
  like all this devil type stuff and I was like holy fuck, this
• 14:50
  song is as ornery as hell. It's ridiculous.

  It's hateful. Well, besides Megadeth being the
• 14:58
  major influence of helping me get high energy, it was kind of
• 15:03
  Megadeth was like a cursing and a bless for me, blessing for me,
• 15:07
  a curse and a blessing. Why?

  Because I wanted to be a musician and Megadeth was one of
• 15:12
  the reasons. There were a couple different
• 15:14
  bands that influenced me but I kept on thinking to myself if I
• 15:20
  can't play half as good of guitar as Dave then I don't even
• 15:25
  belong on on the road. Unfortunately, Dave Mussing had
• 15:30
  set the bar so fucking high and vocalists like Fred Mercury from
• 15:35
  the band Queen had set to me what I thought was the perfect
• 15:39
  type of singing, and Dave was the perfect type of guitar work
• 15:43
  and song arrangements and composition.
• 15:46
  That it made it hard for me as a musician because when I would
• 15:51
  create a track, I'd be like, I'd listen to my shit and then I'd
• 15:55
  listen to something like Megadeth or some of the other
• 15:58
  bands and I'd be like, fuck, I don't have a chance.

  There's no way I'm going to make it.

  Not when there's guys like Megadeth out there.

  I don't even hold a fucking candle.

  I myself, I of course grew up mostly playing the keyboards and
• 16:15
  shit, and I just never was able to get even half as good on the
• 16:20
  guitar. I knew the chords, but I just
• 16:22
  simply could not move. I was not as technical as Dave,
• 16:27
  not even close. And my brother was listening to
• 16:31
  Megadeth since he was 13 years old.

  I showed my brother Megadeth and Metallica and all kinds of other
• 16:39
  shit. My brother picked it all up and
• 16:41
  my brother was able to become this very influential, very
• 16:45
  inspirational prodigy of guitar work.
• 16:48
  Unfortunately, my brother's music never made it past the
• 16:53
  finish line and never blew up like any of these bands before
• 16:59
  us that we were inspired by. But my brother was pretty damn
• 17:03
  good. Good enough to where I could say
• 17:06
  now this shit's worth fucking rocking out to.
• 17:09
  This is worth happening. Yep, it's it's really, really
• 17:17
  amazing what Megadeth has done for my life.
• 17:22
  When you when you listen to some of the guitar work and shit on
• 17:26
  some of our albums, we really, really it, it's important to be
• 17:30
  able to create the song and, and put out our message.
• 17:34
  But what Dave Mustang taught me was had I continued that idea in
• 17:41
  my head that I should be as good as Queen or as good as Megadeth
• 17:46
  and as good as this, Dave Mustang kind of taught me this
• 17:50
  thing. I was listening to him in an
• 17:51
  interview. He basically said I do what I
• 17:55
  want to do. I don't give a shit what anybody
• 17:57
  else does. If it's better, great.

  If it's not, So what? At least I'm doing what the fuck
• 18:03
  I want to do. And then I realized I needed to
• 18:07
  stop competing with other people.

  I needed to do music that I knew that I would enjoy listening to.

  I needed to do fucking music that it didn't matter the tempo
• 18:18
  or the speed or how angry it was.

  It didn't need to be a certain style.
• 18:23
  It didn't need to be anyway. It just needed to make me happy.

  I needed to be pleased. I needed to feel as though I was
• 18:32
  doing what the fuck I wanted to do and not just trying to be
• 18:36
  like someone else. And a lot of musicians can't do
• 18:39
  that. A lot of musicians, they end up
• 18:42
  failing or they fall apart because they want to cover other
• 18:46
  people or they want to be a tribute band to other people.
• 18:50
  Or if they do do original music, they fucking kind of take from
• 18:56
  other people and try to be like them in a sense, while trying to
• 19:01
  also trade back and forth and balance their own originality.
• 19:07
  I couldn't do that. I've always been a black and
• 19:10
  white type of person that had to either be one way or the other.
• 19:14
  It either had to be like everybody else or it had to be
• 19:18
  completely me. And I was able to, as I got
• 19:23
  older, be able to get away from that kind of attitude and that
• 19:27
  kind of thought process and actually create music that I
• 19:30
  loved and enjoyed. And I discovered while making
• 19:34
  the music that it was like creating children.

  You love every single one of them.
• 19:41
  They're all different, but you end up loving every single one
• 19:44
  of them because you know you put everything into it and you know
• 19:48
  that you weren't trying to make a Megadeth baby or a Metallica
• 19:53
  baby or anything like that. You were just doing what was in
• 19:56
  your heart at the time. If it meant it was a slow song,
• 19:59
  so be it. If it meant it was a country
• 20:02
  track, So what? If it was heavy metal, OK, cool.

  You know, whatever the fuck the mood was, whatever the heart was
• 20:10
  talking about that day, that's what you went with.

  That's one of the reasons why my music is so all over the fucking
• 20:17
  place, you know, One minute I'm doing heavy metal and the next
• 20:21
  I'm doing something extremely melodic, something that could
• 20:25
  just be simply piano and a vocalist with a little bit of
• 20:29
  touch of strings in the back. But yeah, still to this day, my
• 20:39
  brother and I, we throw on Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth and Alice
• 20:44
  Cooper and all kinds of stuff. Alice Cooper's not really well
• 20:48
  known for the greatest guitars in the world.

  Ozzy, of course, had Zack Wilde and Randy Rhodes, and there was
• 20:56
  some pretty sick riffs and they were definitely unique and
• 21:00
  original in their own way. But you just trust me, if
• 21:04
  somebody laid 100 CDs out in front of you and then played
• 21:10
  some Megadeth, you would absolutely know the complete
• 21:13
  difference. That's how great Dave was or is.

  I think that the reason why I believe in my heart that one of
• 21:25
  the reasons why Megadeth is retiring now is Dave Mustang
• 21:30
  unfortunately had cancer. I don't know if he's if it's
• 21:35
  completely gone or cured and I know that it probably hurt him
• 21:42
  deep inside internally when Ozzy Osbourne died like he did.
• 21:48
  Ozzy Osbourne does one last show and then couple days later he
• 21:53
  dies and you see all these musicians on TV talking about
• 21:58
  it. You see the kids crying and shut

  for a rock star. You have to think to yourself,
• 22:05
  damn, I'm out on the road all the time and I don't get to see
• 22:09
  my children grow up. The relationship's over a phone.

  I had to make a choice a long time ago myself where I had a
• 22:21
  beautiful wife and I still got her and I got kids and I had to
• 22:25
  make a decision. Do is music going to be the
• 22:28
  priority? Is it because you have to?
• 22:30
  If you're going to be a rock star, there's a lot of
• 22:33
  sacrifices that got to be made. It's a lot of people think it's
• 22:37
  some kind of fucking fun deal. They don't realize there's a
• 22:40
  business side behind it. They don't realize that you're
• 22:44
  going to, from one day to the next, be going places all over
• 22:48
  the fucking country, all over the world, and you will never
• 22:53
  you. There could be months go by
• 22:55
  where you never see your wife or your children and you have to
• 22:59
  make a decision. Is this what I want?

  Do I want the sound of tears from an audience, or do I want
• 23:05
  to hear the sounds of my baby trying to say its first words to
• 23:11
  me and its crib? It's fucking huge, ladies and
• 23:15
  gentlemen. It's a It's a very, very hard
• 23:19
  decision. That's why a lot of rock stars
• 23:27
  start out very young. Dave Mustang was a guy who
• 23:30
  started out young. A lot of my favorite musicians,
• 23:34
  they started out when they were kids, before they had any real
• 23:37
  commitments, when they didn't have shit to their name.
• 23:41
  A lot of my favorite bands, they started out with a bunch of
• 23:44
  friends and they fucking went out there and they did what they
• 23:47
  did and they found their love along the way.
• 23:52
  And there's a lot of bands who decided to prioritize.
• 23:56
  They love their family, but like Ozzy Osbourne, he was always on
• 24:00
  the road, rarely got to see his kids.
• 24:05
  And I don't think that Dave wants that.
• 24:07
  I don't think that Dave loves his his music and he loves what
• 24:11
  he does. But there's a moment where you
• 24:15
  have to choose what do I love more?
• 24:19
  And you can't do a balancing act when you're on the road.

  You can't do a balancing act with your family.
• 24:27
  It's either you wake up in the morning to your wife and your
• 24:30
  kids, or you wake up in a fucking lonely ass motel doing,
• 24:38
  getting your music prepared, practicing before you go out
• 24:42
  there and stage in front of thousands of people.
• 24:47
  I'm sure it's an adrenaline rush.
• 24:49
  I'm sure it's a fucking high that many of you could not
• 24:52
  possibly imagine, but their sacrifice of so many and Dave
• 24:58
  Mustang has sacrificed a great deal of his life to bring us
• 25:02
  some of the greatest music ever. And I hope whatever he chooses
• 25:06
  to do with his life, it's beautiful and it's blessed and
• 25:11
  it's full of love and, and God works through him as he's always
• 25:15
