Latest / DISGRACELAND / Serge Gainsbourg: Brigitte Bardot, Bonnie & Clyde, and Orgasmic Pop Songs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Disgraceland is a production of Double Elvis. The stories about
- 0:16Speaker 1: Serge Gainsburg are insane. They involve illicit romance, scandalous pop
- 0:23Speaker 1: songs condemned by the Vatican, and shocking liaisons too forbidden.
- 0:27Speaker 1: The last he carried out a whirlwind affair with Bridge
- 0:31Speaker 1: of Bardoux at a time when she was not only
- 0:33Speaker 1: the premier sex symbol in the world but married to
- 0:36Speaker 1: a powerful millionaire. Her love inspired him toward a creative breakthrough,
- 0:41Speaker 1: just as their fling barreled toward a doomed ending, an
- 0:45Speaker 1: ending that resulted in a cease and desist letter, in
- 0:49Speaker 1: the physical destruction of great music. Unlike that music I
- 0:54Speaker 1: played for you at the top of the show. That
- 0:56Speaker 1: wasn't great music. That was a preset loop for my
- 0:59Speaker 1: melotron called Jazz Hands Confidential MK. One. I played you
- 1:05Speaker 1: that clip because I can't afford the rights to Hello
- 1:08Speaker 1: Goodbye by the Beatles. Now, why would I play you
- 1:11Speaker 1: that specific slice of Yes No High, Low Stop Go Cheese?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Could I afford it? Because that was the number one
- 1:20Speaker 1: song in America on January second, nineteen sixty eight, And
- 1:24Speaker 1: that was the day that Serge Gainsburg and Bridget Bardeaux
- 1:27Speaker 1: released the album Bonnie and Clyde, a starcross collaboration so
- 1:32Speaker 1: powerful that it stopped them from ever again making music together.
- 1:38Speaker 1: On this episode, Illicit Romance, Scandalous Songs, Shocking Liaisons, Bonnie
- 1:45Speaker 1: and Clyde, Bridget Bardou and Serge Gainsburg, I'm Jake Brennan
- 1:51Speaker 1: and this is Disgraceland West, Dallas, Texas, nineteen thirty two.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Twenty one year old Bonnie Parker was glad to be
- 2:21Speaker 1: out of jail, but not thrilled to be home. She
- 2:25Speaker 1: wanted to be with Clyde, out on the road, living
- 2:28Speaker 1: by the gun, living fast. But Bonnie wasn't so fast,
- 2:33Speaker 1: not like Clyde and the others. She had strengths, like
- 2:36Speaker 1: her loyalty, but outrunning a posse was not one of them,
- 2:41Speaker 1: which was how she wound up separated from the gang.
- 2:43Speaker 1: In the first place. They were hauling ass through an
- 2:48Speaker 1: unforgiving swamp, law men hot on their trail, gunshots echoing
- 2:52Speaker 1: in the near distance. Bonnie knew she was too slow.
- 2:56Speaker 1: At this rate, they'd all get caught. Even Clyde was
- 3:00Speaker 1: later than she was, limping like he did on account
- 3:02Speaker 1: of the two toes he purposefully cut off his left foot.
- 3:05Speaker 1: That was a prison hack, figuratively and literally, in a
- 3:09Speaker 1: bloody painful one at that not as painful as the
- 3:13Speaker 1: rape that he endured day in and day out for
- 3:16Speaker 1: an entire year at the hands of another inmate, A
- 3:19Speaker 1: year of sexual torture and degradation that Clyde eventually ended
- 3:24Speaker 1: with a lead pipe split that raypie fucker's head right
- 3:28Speaker 1: in two, and then he split off his own toes
- 3:31Speaker 1: with an axe blade. That little stunt got him off
- 3:34Speaker 1: work detail and eventually got him paroled. These days, it
- 3:39Speaker 1: went without saying Clyde Barrow was not going back to prison,
- 3:46Speaker 1: so Bonnie stayed behind. She let the pose capture her
- 3:49Speaker 1: and drag her to the town single jail cell, and
- 3:52Speaker 1: then she told the judge that Clyde's gang had kidnapped
- 3:54Speaker 1: her and forced her to go along as they unsuccessfully
- 3:57Speaker 1: tried to knock over a hardware store. Of course, it
- 4:03Speaker 1: was bullshit. Bonnie Parker was no damsel in distress. She
- 4:07Speaker 1: was as complicit as the rest of them. But she
- 4:10Speaker 1: told the lie to avoid hard time. And she told
- 4:12Speaker 1: another lie, this one to her mother, that she was
- 4:15Speaker 1: done with Clyde Barrow for good. Which suited her mother
- 4:19Speaker 1: just fine, because Clyde Barrow wasn't welcome here. Clyde was
- 4:23Speaker 1: a degenerate and outlaw, a man who robbed banks and
- 4:27Speaker 1: corner stores, a man who stole cars and took lawman hostage,
- 4:32Speaker 1: all while the decent people of America sank into a
- 4:34Speaker 1: great depression and struggled to make ends meet. Bonnie didn't
- 4:39Speaker 1: tell her mother that Clyde was coming back for her.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Clyde was the best man she knew. He made her
- 4:44Speaker 1: feel wanted. He listened to her, and she listened too,
- 4:49Speaker 1: about how Clyde, a high school dropout, was never going
- 4:52Speaker 1: to make a decent wage at an honest job and
- 4:54Speaker 1: never wear the clothes other people wore, or drive their cars,
- 4:58Speaker 1: not legally, that is, Clyde was a have not I
- 5:02Speaker 1: never will. And the two lovers bonded in their mutual frustration,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and then they did something about it together. But tonight
- 5:12Speaker 1: Bonnie and Clyde were not together, not yet at least.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Clyde Barrow was behind the wheel of a stone Ford
- 5:22Speaker 1: V eight rolling through a stringtown, Oklahoma, a one horse
- 5:26Speaker 1: town perhaps, but still he knew it was a bad
- 5:28Speaker 1: idea to stop Clyde's reputation preceded him, So did the
- 5:33Speaker 1: murder of a jewelry shop owner some four hours south
- 5:35Speaker 1: in Hillsboro, Texas. That man didn't have to die. He
- 5:40Speaker 1: put his own fate in motion, though the moment that
- 5:42Speaker 1: he reached for the gun he kept next to his cash,
- 5:45Speaker 1: one of Clyde's guys beat him to it. Bang dead.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Made no difference that Clyde didn't pull the trigger. He
- 5:52Speaker 1: was the face of the gang, a gang that had
- 5:54Speaker 1: finally crossed the line from stick up men to cold
- 5:58Speaker 1: blooded killers. One of those guys, Raymond, wanted a party.
- 6:05Speaker 1: String Town's open pavilion shone bright in the darkness. A
- 6:09Speaker 1: guitar and fiddle played hillbilly music while the locals danced
- 6:12Speaker 1: and passed around flasks of bootleg whiskey. In a swankie
- 6:16Speaker 1: stolen suit, Raymond stuck out like a sore thumb did
- 6:20Speaker 1: over Clyde, idling in his fancy va. It was time
- 6:23Speaker 1: to move on before they pressed their luck a little
- 6:25Speaker 1: too far. Clyde called Raymond back. Raymond didn't return alone.
- 6:31Speaker 1: The county sheriff was here now, leaning inside the ford's
- 6:34Speaker 1: open window. He'd made Clyde by sight, or on a hunch,
- 6:38Speaker 1: perhaps he spied the gun in the back seat. Either way,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the sheriff played it cool. He politely informed Clyde that
- 6:45Speaker 1: they were all under arrest. Clyde thought of that dead
- 6:49Speaker 1: shop owner in Hillsboro, prison work, detail, the abuse, the humiliation,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and then he thought about Bonnie. How he would do
- 6:59Speaker 1: anything I see her again. Anything. Clyde and Raymond drew
- 7:05Speaker 1: their guns and fired through the open window. The sheriff
- 7:09Speaker 1: was blown back off the ford and landed on the street.
- 7:12Speaker 1: His pistol hit the ground. A bystander picked it up
- 7:14Speaker 1: and began to shoot. He was joined by the Condes
- 7:17Speaker 1: under sheriff, who came running up with a sidearm, blasting
- 7:21Speaker 1: Clyde through the ford in a first and hit the gas.
- 7:24Speaker 1: The car lurched forward and slammed into a culvert. It
- 7:27Speaker 1: rolled the horndo its side, stuck. Clyde and Ramon pulled
- 7:31Speaker 1: themselves from the wreck, pistols first fire and round after round.
- 7:35Speaker 1: The under sheriff was hit. He dropped to the dirt dead.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Clyde and Raymond scrambled for the woods, chaotically shooting behind
- 7:42Speaker 1: their backs as they ran away from the commotion. Clyde
- 7:46Speaker 1: found another car, he hot wired in and drove it
- 7:48Speaker 1: for a few miles, and then ditched it for the
- 7:51Speaker 1: next one. He did this numerous times, thinking it would
- 7:54Speaker 1: cover his tracks keep the cops guessing. Cops who at
- 7:58Speaker 1: this very moment were assembling knew posse to track down
- 8:01Speaker 1: what was quickly becoming one of the most infamous crime
- 8:04Speaker 1: gangs in the country. But no posse was taking clyde barrow.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Not today. He quickly made his way back to West Dallas,
- 8:13Speaker 1: where Bonnie Parker was waiting for him, And when he
- 8:16Speaker 1: reached her and put her hand in his once more,
- 8:20Speaker 1: something clicked. It was electric. Bonnie and Clyde would never
- 8:25Speaker 1: be a part again. Paris, nineteen sixty seven. Bridget Bardow
- 8:34Speaker 1: let her hand wander underneath the table until it met his.
- 8:38Speaker 1: She wasn't expecting what happened next. A shock, a vibration, emotion,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and lust cascading in a physical ripple that shot up
- 8:47Speaker 1: her arm and enveloped her entire body. She looked deep
- 8:51Speaker 1: into his eyes and felt the connection mental, physical, spiritual.
- 8:57Speaker 1: The rest of the world fell away. It crumbled, it burned,
- 9:01Speaker 1: It sank into the ocean, and was swallowed by the ground.
- 9:06Speaker 1: From this moment on, it was just the two of them.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Before she took hold of his hand, Serge Gainsburg was
- 9:15Speaker 1: already in awe of the woman sitting across from him.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I mean, just look at her s Bridget Bardo, we're
- 9:21Speaker 1: talking about just like millions of other men around the world,
- 9:25Speaker 1: the Surge was undeniably drawn to the French sex symbols
- 9:28Speaker 1: jaqui okay, actually that's bullshit. We do in fact sequa
- 9:34Speaker 1: we sequa treviien. But Serge Gainsburg was different. He knew this.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He wasn't traditionally handsome like Jacques Dutrump or Johnny Halliday.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He thought his ears were too big, his mug was
- 9:47Speaker 1: too ugly. He was just a songwriter, an unorthodox He
- 9:50Speaker 1: had a provocative singer who for years tried unsuccessfully to
- 9:54Speaker 1: fit in with French chanson or French ya ya, before
- 9:57Speaker 1: a big win at the Eurovision Song Contest suddenly put
- 10:00Speaker 1: him on the world map. He didn't realize that at
- 10:03Speaker 1: the time, but he wasn't destined to fall in line.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Serge Gainsburg would redefine French music. More on that later,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Bridget Bardou, she didn't just want Serge Gainsburg to write
- 10:15Speaker 1: songs for her. She wanted him. Their blossoming romance was
- 10:21Speaker 1: by definition not only surprising but illicid. Bridget Bardeau was
- 10:26Speaker 1: married to a German playboy, but Bridget Bardoux got off
- 10:30Speaker 1: on the illicit and twice divorced. Serge Gainsburg was as
- 10:34Speaker 1: much an agent provocateur as he was a musician. After all,
- 10:39Speaker 1: this is the man who followed up that Eurovision win
- 10:42Speaker 1: by writing a song called Les Susette for an eighteen
- 10:45Speaker 1: year old chantouse who thought she was singing about how
- 10:48Speaker 1: much she liked to suck on lollipops. But well, you
- 10:51Speaker 1: get the picture. So for Bridget Bardeaux and Serge Gainsburg,
- 10:55Speaker 1: keeping their newfound love under raps only added to its allure,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and it greatly inspired Surge to write songs unlike he
- 11:03Speaker 1: or anyone else in the French pop world were writing
- 11:06Speaker 1: songs like Bonnie and Clyde, both epically romantic and also
- 11:11Speaker 1: patently fucking weird. A duet between Bridget and Surge the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Beauty and the Beast. The duo performed the song on
- 11:19Speaker 1: French TV on January first, nineteen sixty eight, but they
- 11:23Speaker 1: kept the chemistry very detached so French surge sleeves, rolled up,
- 11:29Speaker 1: ty loosened, gun in a shoulder holster, puffing on a
- 11:32Speaker 1: half smoke. Gitm Bardeaux in a long skirt with an
- 11:36Speaker 1: even longer slit, Garters beret, black eyeliner, Tommy gun in
- 11:40Speaker 1: her very capable hands. They weren't actually Bonnie and Clyde,
- 11:44Speaker 1: not really, But like Bonnie and Clyde, they were empowered
- 11:48Speaker 1: by lust, if not love, they were consumed with passion.
- 11:53Speaker 1: But the provocative nature of their union, it's illicitness. It
- 11:56Speaker 1: was either truly beautiful or it was doomed. They didn't care.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Nothing mattered as long as they were together. Dexfield Park, Texas,
- 12:31Speaker 1: nineteen thirty three. Bonnie Parker sat lookout in the passenger
- 12:35Speaker 1: seat of a Ford VA not the same V eight
- 12:38Speaker 1: that her lover and partner in crime, Clyde Barrow, had
- 12:41Speaker 1: rolled into a culver back in Stringtown, Oklahoma, nearly a
- 12:44Speaker 1: year prior, and not the other V eight that Clyde
- 12:46Speaker 1: had just recently crashed in Wellington, Texas, doing seventy on
- 12:49Speaker 1: a pitch black night. He didn't see the detour science
- 12:53Speaker 1: or that the road ahead was closed. The wooden barricade.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It was no match for Clyde's lead foot in that particular,
- 12:59Speaker 1: V rolled over half a dozen times before coming to
- 13:02Speaker 1: arrest in a river bed. Battery, acid hot boiling leaped
- 13:07Speaker 1: out onto Bonnie's leg, each drop sizzling her skin, the
- 13:11Speaker 1: smell of burning flesh, flesh that was being flayed away
- 13:15Speaker 1: right before her eyes, right down to the bone which
- 13:18Speaker 1: was now poking out for all to see. Well, at
- 13:23Speaker 1: least they had each other, That's what Bonnie told herself.
- 13:26Speaker 1: But Bonnie needed more than Clyde's love and support right now.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Her leg was a mess. It was only a matter
- 13:32Speaker 1: of time before some bacterial infection set in, maybe even
- 13:35Speaker 1: gay and green. Bonnie needed medical supplies, and the rest
- 13:39Speaker 1: of the gang needed food and new clothes. Thus Bonnie
- 13:42Speaker 1: sat and yet another stone forward V Eight while Clyde
- 13:45Speaker 1: ran errands on Main Street, USA. Legit errants, not robberies,
- 13:51Speaker 1: all the same. It was a risk. Their names were
- 13:54Speaker 1: all over the papers and their pictures too, thanks to
- 13:56Speaker 1: undeveloped rolls of film they left in a car after
- 13:58Speaker 1: a shootout and drop them Missouri. Dozens of pictures, pictures
- 14:02Speaker 1: that showed a murderous gang in the middle of a
- 14:04Speaker 1: crime spree, goofing off Bonnie pretending to hold Clyde at gunpoint.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Bonnie with her foot up on the fender of a sedan,
- 14:13Speaker 1: handgun in her right hand, cigar in her mouth. They
- 14:17Speaker 1: flaunted both their notoriety and their elusiveness in front of
- 14:20Speaker 1: the whole country, a country full of people who wanted
- 14:23Speaker 1: to tear Bonnie and Clyde apart, like the people of Stringtown,
- 14:27Speaker 1: their under sheriff dead. Or Joplin, where Clyde littered a
- 14:31Speaker 1: posse with bullets from his Browning automatic rifle, hitting a
- 14:34Speaker 1: police officer in the face and nearly severing his arm
- 14:36Speaker 1: from his body. And over in Plate City, where a
- 14:39Speaker 1: shootout seriously wounded Clyde's brother Buck, the left Buck's wife Blanche,
- 14:44Speaker 1: with shards of glass in her eyes. Buck and Blanche
- 14:49Speaker 1: were new arrivals to the Barrel gang. Buck had only
- 14:52Speaker 1: recently left the joint, and he was rusty. Rusty enough
- 14:55Speaker 1: to catch a slug from a highway patrolman that came
- 14:58Speaker 1: screaming through the air swiftly entered his left temple and
- 15:02Speaker 1: exploded out of his forehead, ripped off a piece of
- 15:05Speaker 1: his skull. It fucked him up and slowed him down,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and he couldn't move, not like his brother and the
- 15:10Speaker 1: others were moving. Now. Rousted from their hiding place in
- 15:13Speaker 1: Dexfield Park at five in the morning, not because Clyde
- 15:16Speaker 1: was caught running errands in town because some goodie two
- 15:18Speaker 1: shoots fucko couldn't mind his own business when he stumbled
- 15:21Speaker 1: upon their makeshift campsite. The mob that had shown up
- 15:26Speaker 1: to capture them was about fifty people strong. Most of
- 15:29Speaker 1: them lickered up. The outlaws were quickly surrounded, and they
- 15:33Speaker 1: began to shoot their way out. Tiste shotguns, Clyde's browning
- 15:38Speaker 1: and the posse retaliated. So many holes blasted into the
- 15:41Speaker 1: V eight and the gang was forced to hit the ground.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Running down a hill tore the river. Clyde kept firing
- 15:47Speaker 1: as forty five until all he heard were empty clicks.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Bonnie was slow, slower than usual, even her bad leg
- 15:54Speaker 1: throbbed every time she took a step. Buck's whole world spinning,
- 15:58Speaker 1: the wind, blowing a violent cas where his skull was
- 16:01Speaker 1: missing and his brain was exposed. Clyde knew it was
- 16:05Speaker 1: either Bonnie or his brother. He couldn't help them both,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and he'd already made the decision to never leave Bonnie
- 16:11Speaker 1: behind again, so Clyde grabbed Bonnie and ran. He dragged
- 16:16Speaker 1: her down the hill. More shots rang out behind them.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Bonnie felt a burning sensation there in her abdomenue. She
- 16:22Speaker 1: looked down. Her nightgown was soaked with blood. Clyde didn't
- 16:26Speaker 1: let go. They made it to the river, then into
- 16:28Speaker 1: dense brush. They had a few minutes tops before the
- 16:31Speaker 1: posse was on top of them. Most likely they'd stopped
- 16:34Speaker 1: to deal with Buck and probably blanched too, seeing as
- 16:36Speaker 1: her wounds were just as much of a liability. But
- 16:39Speaker 1: Clyde couldn't worry about that. Now he had to worry
- 16:42Speaker 1: about Bonnie. He remained calm and found a nearby farm
- 16:46Speaker 1: pointed as empty forty five at the family and told
- 16:48Speaker 1: him he was taking their nineteen twenty nine Plymouth and
- 16:51Speaker 1: he laid Bonnie down in the back seat, and then
- 16:54Speaker 1: Clyde Barrow, got behind the wheel, hit the gas and
- 16:57Speaker 1: drove bridget Bardou approached the motorcycle wearing black thigh high
- 17:06Speaker 1: boots and a black leather mini skirt. Her eyeliner was black,
- 17:10Speaker 1: her hair was blonde. Sex on fool so hot that
- 17:14Speaker 1: Serge Gainsburg's TV screen appeared to be melting. She was
- 17:18Speaker 1: a French female Jim Morrison lighting the fire of anyone
- 17:22Speaker 1: who watched, and oh boy did they watch. Surge and
- 17:26Speaker 1: everyone else with a television and a pulse watched as
- 17:29Speaker 1: Bridget Bardowu lip synced her new single Harley Davidson, another
- 17:33Speaker 1: of Surge's infectious compositions. Bridget couldn't care less about motorcycles.
- 17:38Speaker 1: If she was being honest, Fast cars were her thing.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Her Triumph spitfire with the top down didn't matter. This
- 17:45Speaker 1: song was about the vibe, about freedom, rebellion, about how
- 17:49Speaker 1: it was better to die than to let someone else
- 17:51Speaker 1: tell you how to live your life. Real love, vigilanti shit.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Bridget Bardeau and Serge Gainsburg were love outlaws on the lamb,
- 18:01Speaker 1: not from the law, but from the papers, the paparazzi.
- 18:05Speaker 1: They tooled around Paris and her Triumph, Bridget behind the
- 18:08Speaker 1: wheel and the smoke from Serge's cigarette leaving a pungent trail,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and the awake one minute here and the next gone.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Bridget was quickly realizing that her marriage to gun their
- 18:19Speaker 1: sacks playboy, a multi millionaire jack of all trades, but
- 18:23Speaker 1: Master of None was a sham. She didn't love him,
- 18:27Speaker 1: not in the purest sense. She didn't want him like
- 18:29Speaker 1: a truck. She didn't watch the world disintegrate before her
- 18:33Speaker 1: very eyes when she touched him. At that moment, Sergia's
- 18:36Speaker 1: hand touched hers on the gearshift. She hit the clutch
- 18:39Speaker 1: with her left foot and punched it into third. Surge's
- 18:42Speaker 1: heart skipped a beat. She made him feel like a
- 18:44Speaker 1: man twenty one years old, not forty, back when he
- 18:47Speaker 1: was still green, up late playing music in nightclubs, up
- 18:51Speaker 1: early to paint, burning that candle, courses in composition and orchestration,
- 18:56Speaker 1: learning the difference between cabarets and music halls. I was
- 19:00Speaker 1: like the clap, but it was the everyday listeners who
- 19:02Speaker 1: plunk down cash, never enough cash. It had seemed, at
- 19:06Speaker 1: least for a time, a prolonged period of time, when
- 19:08Speaker 1: Phillips Records enjoyed having Surged on their roster. Even a
- 19:12Speaker 1: few people were buying his albums. But then it all changed.
- 19:17Speaker 1: First Eurovision, then BB as she was known. Their first
- 19:22Speaker 1: date a disaster. He could hardly believe she was interested
- 19:25Speaker 1: in him, of all people. His confidence was shot. Maybe
- 19:29Speaker 1: he was just drunk. He wanted to make it up
- 19:32Speaker 1: to her with a gift a song, the most beautiful
- 19:35Speaker 1: love song he could imagine. Serge Gainsburg played Je tem
- 19:40Speaker 1: Juana pou for Bridge Bardoux on her piano, a duet
- 19:44Speaker 1: between two lovers as they have breathless passionate sex. The
- 19:48Speaker 1: ultimate fuck song, but then also the ultimate anti fuck
- 19:52Speaker 1: song too. That Surge who was put it, seeing as
- 19:55Speaker 1: the title translates to I love you me neither as
- 19:59Speaker 1: in come on you, and I know that this is
- 20:01Speaker 1: just some raw animal attraction, no need to attach an
- 20:04Speaker 1: actual emotion to it, which was either Surge's own anxiety's
- 20:08Speaker 1: talking or just as trademark Deadpan's sense of humor. Either way,
- 20:12Speaker 1: it was, in Surge's mind his first real love song,
- 20:15Speaker 1: just as real as the recording session that followed. Barclay Studios, Paris,
- 20:23Speaker 1: Surge and Bridget stepped inside a small glass vocal booth
- 20:26Speaker 1: and closed the door behind them. They stood chest to
- 20:29Speaker 1: chest in front of the same microphone. The backing track
- 20:33Speaker 1: began to play in their headphones. A dramatic swirl of
- 20:36Speaker 1: strings and organ consumed the three piece backing band like
- 20:39Speaker 1: a slow moving tornado of ecstasy. The studio lights dimmed
- 20:44Speaker 1: and the two sang. Then Bridget began to moan jetten.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Surge touched her body with his hand and the two
- 20:52Speaker 1: felt that electric shock again. He knew his detached response
- 20:56Speaker 1: would drive her wild. One on Plue tailed with a shudder.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Sem She made more noises, no words, though, just sounds
- 21:06Speaker 1: of orgasmic euphoria, each sound going straight into the microphone
- 21:11Speaker 1: and straight to the bulch and Surge his pants. He
- 21:14Speaker 1: thought of her back at his place in his bed,
- 21:17Speaker 1: one hand running up the curve of her naked thigh
- 21:19Speaker 1: and the other clasping a gton smokee down to the filter,
- 21:23Speaker 1: and the windows of the vocal booth fogged up. The
- 21:26Speaker 1: song ended. Serge Gainsburg bass in the afterglow, knowing that
- 21:33Speaker 1: jateem Monapleaux was the most provocative piece of music he'd
- 21:37Speaker 1: recorded to date. That alone would be huge for sales.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It would also blow the lid off the worst kept
- 21:44Speaker 1: secret in France that he and Bridget Bardoux were fucking.
- 21:50Speaker 1: He didn't care let the whole world know. The record
- 21:53Speaker 1: plant began to press promotional forty five's, and before it
- 21:56Speaker 1: was even released, the word was out. The new Surge,
- 21:59Speaker 1: Gainsbury and Bridget Bardeau single was scandalous. Four minutes and
- 22:03Speaker 1: thirty five seconds of a Morris panting as Paris's Sunday
- 22:06Speaker 1: paper called it, word reached. Gunther Sachs, Bridget's multi millionaire
- 22:11Speaker 1: playboy husband, was beside himself. He wasn't about to sit
- 22:14Speaker 1: idly by while his wife made sex records with that
- 22:16Speaker 1: clownish Quasimoto. Never mind what it would do to her career,
- 22:20Speaker 1: It would make a fool out of him, and Gunter
- 22:22Speaker 1: Sachs was no fool. The next morning, a letter arrived
- 22:27Speaker 1: at Serge's house Cease and desist, destroy all copies Ger
- 22:33Speaker 1: tim mona pleux no longer existed. Serge Gainsburg and Bridget
- 22:38Speaker 1: Barde We're done. We'll be right back after this word
- 22:47Speaker 1: word word. Texas Highway one, fourteen Easter Sunday, nineteen thirty four,
- 23:01Speaker 1: Clyde Barrow leaned against the latest stone Ford VA parked
- 23:04Speaker 1: on the side of the road. With his brother Buck
- 23:07Speaker 1: dead and gone. It was now more important than ever
- 23:09Speaker 1: to pay visits to family back in West Dallas, especially
- 23:13Speaker 1: around the holidays. But Clyde Barrow and his outlaw lover,
- 23:16Speaker 1: Bonnie Parker, were the most sought after criminals of the country,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and that made visits tough, so instead of going to
- 23:22Speaker 1: family in the city, they arranged for family to meet
- 23:25Speaker 1: them at strategic spots out in the country, like this
- 23:28Speaker 1: isolated stretch of road where they now waited for people
- 23:31Speaker 1: to arrive. And people did arrive, just not the people
- 23:35Speaker 1: they were expecting. Bonnie was sitting in the passenger seat
- 23:39Speaker 1: thinking about how much her leg continued to bother her.
- 23:42Speaker 1: They had yet to find proper medical treatment for her injuries.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Bones still protruded from the skin. She drank whiskey to
- 23:50Speaker 1: take the edge off, so did Henry Methfinn, the only
- 23:53Speaker 1: other member of the Barrow game here at the moment
- 23:56Speaker 1: standing next to Clyde. Henry was a convict who managed
- 24:00Speaker 1: to escape from a prison farm a few months earlier
- 24:02Speaker 1: when Bonnie and Clyde staged a dramatic breakout for another
- 24:05Speaker 1: gang member that left one guard dead in its wake.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Henry was new here, and Henry was drunk. He didn't
- 24:12Speaker 1: fully understand Clyde Barrow's code that Clyde didn't actually want
- 24:16Speaker 1: to kill anyone. Well, the son of a bitch who
- 24:18Speaker 1: raped him back in prisoned to what was coming, but
- 24:21Speaker 1: out here on the road. Clyde only shot when he
- 24:23Speaker 1: was out of other options, which happened far more frequently
- 24:26Speaker 1: than he liked. He was actually more fond of taking
- 24:29Speaker 1: CoP's prisoner when the gang wasn't outnumbered, that is, show
- 24:33Speaker 1: them what he was capable of, show them that he
- 24:35Speaker 1: had some compassion Henry. Though Henry wasn't feeling very compassionate
- 24:40Speaker 1: when they heard the rumble of motorcycles coming from down
- 24:42Speaker 1: the road. He was just buzzing on some high proof liquor.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Soon two figures came into view, not Bonnie and Clyde's families,
- 24:51Speaker 1: two Texas Highway patrola riding two wheelers with shotguns strapped
- 24:55Speaker 1: to the side. Henry grabbed his rifle and hit it
- 24:58Speaker 1: behind his back. Roll slowed their bikes upon approach. Clyde
- 25:03Speaker 1: didn't want to wait to see if they would be recognized.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Let's take them, he told Henry, meaning let's force them
- 25:09Speaker 1: at gunpoint inside the car and take them for a ride.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Henry knew and drunk interpreted it in a different way.
- 25:17Speaker 1: He quickly pulled his rifle from behind his back and
- 25:19Speaker 1: aimed it at one of the cops point blank. He
- 25:22Speaker 1: pulled the trigger and The cop was blown off his
- 25:25Speaker 1: bike and hit the dirt dead on impact. The other
- 25:29Speaker 1: cop grabbed shells from his pocket and frantically began to
- 25:32Speaker 1: load them into his shotgun. Clyde was irritated, fucking Henry
- 25:37Speaker 1: if he wants something done right and all that, Clyde
- 25:40Speaker 1: pulled his pistol and fired, not a kill shot that
- 25:44Speaker 1: was intentional. The cop fell off his bike, wounded but
- 25:47Speaker 1: still alive, but not for long. Henry reloaded, then pointed
- 25:52Speaker 1: his rifle directly at the cop on the ground, leaning
- 25:55Speaker 1: out begging for his life, and the Barrel gang claimed
- 25:58Speaker 1: their next victim. Serge Gainsburg thought about shoving a gun
- 26:07Speaker 1: in his mouth and pulling the trigger, or maybe he'd
- 26:10Speaker 1: just throw his body into the sin. He was despondent,
- 26:14Speaker 1: denied love, denied expressing that love in a song. Worst
- 26:17Speaker 1: of all, denied her. Didn't matter that the Paris papers
- 26:22Speaker 1: were just now getting around, the publishing photos of the
- 26:24Speaker 1: two of them together Christmas shopping. That was old Mews.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Now Bridget was gone back with Gunther, her husband, a
- 26:32Speaker 1: man that Surge knew she didn't love, not in the
- 26:35Speaker 1: way she loved him. Regardless, she had a marriage to
- 26:39Speaker 1: consider a career as well. Even the world's premiere sex
- 26:43Speaker 1: symbol could push things too far, hence the last minute
- 26:46Speaker 1: decision to pull Getaine on the pou, or so the thinking.
- 26:50Speaker 1: When Serge went back to his house and spent Christmas alone,
- 26:55Speaker 1: his two children with their mother elsewhere, just his piano,
- 26:59Speaker 1: his gitans, some French wine in his regrets to keep
- 27:02Speaker 1: him company. And then there was a knock on the door.
- 27:08Speaker 1: He opened it and was stunned into silence. Bridget stood
- 27:12Speaker 1: before him, suitcase in hand. She couldn't stay, though. She
- 27:18Speaker 1: was on her way down Maria in Spain to shoot
- 27:21Speaker 1: a movie with Sean Connery, but she needed to see
- 27:24Speaker 1: Surge one more time. She needed closure. Inside the house,
- 27:29Speaker 1: Bridget picked her right index finger with a needle. A
- 27:32Speaker 1: droplet of blood crimson red emerged on the tip of
- 27:36Speaker 1: her white skin. She took a page a Surge of
- 27:39Speaker 1: sheet music and wrote in her own blood Jatins. She
- 27:43Speaker 1: passed the needle to Surge. He pricked his index finger
- 27:46Speaker 1: and watched as the blood began to ooze out. He
- 27:49Speaker 1: took the same piece of sheet music and with his
- 27:51Speaker 1: own blood wrote his own message, Juan no on Pleau
- 28:00Speaker 1: two Outlaw Lovers felt that surge of electricity again, the
- 28:04Speaker 1: same one they felt when they touched under the table,
- 28:06Speaker 1: and then again when they sang into the same microphone
- 28:08Speaker 1: inside a vocal booth. Bridget packed the bloodstained piece of
- 28:12Speaker 1: sheet music in her suitcase and kissed Surge goodbye. Then
- 28:16Speaker 1: she walked out the door and got on a plane.
- 28:19Speaker 1: But she didn't actually leave. She wasn't truly gone. She
- 28:23Speaker 1: was still here long after her body left the room.
- 28:27Speaker 1: In Surge, his hands, his mouth, his breath, and his
- 28:30Speaker 1: tears as he was in hers, their love refused to die.
- 28:36Speaker 1: It was eternal. Beingville Parish, Louisiana, May twenty third, nineteen
- 29:03Speaker 1: thirty four. Six police officers lay in wait in the bushes,
- 29:08Speaker 1: guns drawn loaded ready. They watched as the Ford V
- 29:13Speaker 1: eight mosied along at a good clip, probably sixty miles
- 29:17Speaker 1: an hour or so, down a straightaway stretch of road.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Behind the wheel Clyde Barrow couldn't see the men hiding
- 29:24Speaker 1: up ahead. From the passenger seat. Bonnie didn't pay much attention,
- 29:29Speaker 1: but Clyde did see a logging truck stopped in the
- 29:31Speaker 1: middle of the road blocking his way. As he got closer,
- 29:35Speaker 1: he recognized the man standing next to it. Henry Methven's father, Clyde,
- 29:40Speaker 1: came to a stop next to the truck. He rolled
- 29:43Speaker 1: his window down and asked mister Methvin what seemed to
- 29:45Speaker 1: be the problem. Damn thing won't start. Clyde came the reply,
- 29:50Speaker 1: It was all a ruse, a plan concocted by the
- 29:53Speaker 1: concerned members of the Methvin family along with the posse
- 29:56Speaker 1: of lawmen who had been pursuing Bonnie and Clyde for
- 29:58Speaker 1: two years. The plan being that right now, at this moment,
- 30:02Speaker 1: the Texas ranger in charge would stand up from where
- 30:05Speaker 1: they were hiding and give the outlaws a chance to surrender.
- 30:09Speaker 1: But someone else stood up first, the b Nvil parish deputy.
- 30:13Speaker 1: With an itchy finger on the trigger of his Remington Madellee.
- 30:17Speaker 1: He took aim and fired the semi automatic rifle burst open.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Was shot. After shot, most of the bullets at the ford,
- 30:27Speaker 1: but one sailed directly through the driver's side window, into
- 30:30Speaker 1: Clyde Barrow's left temple and out the right side of
- 30:33Speaker 1: his head. Clyde went limp dead, his foot eased off
- 30:39Speaker 1: the brake pedal, and the V eight began to roll forward.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Bonnie shrieked the rest of the law men were up
- 30:45Speaker 1: right now, all of them aiming their firearms at the fort.
- 30:49Speaker 1: The bullets flew, smashing through the car's metal, the doors,
- 30:53Speaker 1: the windows, and into Bonnie Parker's hysterical body. The Ford
- 30:58Speaker 1: rolled to a ditch on the side of the road
- 31:01Speaker 1: and stopped, living by the gun, dying by the gun, fast,
- 31:07Speaker 1: living on the slow road to doom. Bonnie Parker and
- 31:15Speaker 1: Clyde Barrow doomed, just as Serge Gainsburg and Bridget Bardeaux
- 31:20Speaker 1: would be doomed some thirty four years later. The whole
- 31:23Speaker 1: thing was too good to be true. The ugly agent
- 31:27Speaker 1: provocateur and the beautiful sex goddess beset by morals and
- 31:31Speaker 1: expectations of the world, they were born into. Surge, for one,
- 31:35Speaker 1: coped with the loss of Bridget by drinking, smoking, and
- 31:38Speaker 1: writing his song initials BB, a wash in cinematic strings
- 31:43Speaker 1: and horns, immortalized the memory of his illicit romance, a
- 31:48Speaker 1: crime against what was right, against unions and vows and
- 31:51Speaker 1: holy matrimony, a crime that nonetheless felt good to commit.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Surge could never give up on love, no matter how
- 31:58Speaker 1: moral or immral. He founded again with Jane Berkin, a
- 32:02Speaker 1: British actress and singer who re recorded shatem Mouna Pou
- 32:06Speaker 1: with him. When it was released in nineteen sixty nine,
- 32:10Speaker 1: it was called pornographic band in Portugal, Brazil, Sweden and Italy,
- 32:15Speaker 1: where the Vatican deemed it obscene. But not before it
- 32:19Speaker 1: got to number two on the Italian charts, not before
- 32:22Speaker 1: Serge Gainsburg earned his first global hit, the kind of
- 32:26Speaker 1: hit he could never have with Bridget. Surge was thinking
- 32:30Speaker 1: about her now. The index finger he once pricked, the
- 32:33Speaker 1: needle writing a message in blood, began to throb. He
- 32:37Speaker 1: could feel his heart beating there, but not just his
- 32:40Speaker 1: own heart, Bridget's heart too. The two hearts pounded in
- 32:44Speaker 1: his ears ninety seven beats per minute, the tempo of
- 32:48Speaker 1: their song Bonnie and Clyde. The other instruments fell in line,
- 32:52Speaker 1: the drums, the bass, the quika, sounding out an eerie
- 32:56Speaker 1: call in the distance. Every two measures. The strings began
- 33:00Speaker 1: to rise like swells on the ocean. The two of
- 33:03Speaker 1: them were on that sound stage again, dressed in character,
- 33:06Speaker 1: recording their Bonnie and Clyde video. He with his Colt
- 33:10Speaker 1: forty five, she with her Tommy gun. After the shoot,
- 33:14Speaker 1: they jumped back in her Triumph spitfire. The top was
- 33:17Speaker 1: down and the wind blew her hair back. The sound
- 33:20Speaker 1: of the engine reving made him hard as a rock.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Surge gazed into the black eyeliner circling her two eyes
- 33:26Speaker 1: and was ushered down a tunnel. His stomach twisted up
- 33:29Speaker 1: in knots mon mon buge Leon, the sells bb. She
- 33:36Speaker 1: pressed hard on the gas pedal, and the spitfire surged ahead.
- 33:40Speaker 1: The road became a sound, a feeling, a feeling of
- 33:43Speaker 1: love so overwhelming it felt wrong to pursue it that
- 33:47Speaker 1: they continued once again.
- 33:49Speaker 2: The world was.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Falling away, crumbling, burning. It all sank into the ocean.
- 33:56Speaker 1: The press, pavazzi, dump their sacks. None of it mattered.
- 34:01Speaker 1: It was just two of them, living fast, living for passion, physical, fictional, forbidden, doomed, disgraced.
