- 0:00Speaker 1: There comes a moment in every age when even the
- 0:03Speaker 1: mightiest powers must face their end. In the world of
- 0:07Speaker 1: Norse mythology, that moment was called Ragnarok. It was the
- 0:11Speaker 1: doom of the gods, the final battle between the forces
- 0:15Speaker 1: of order and chaos, and the catastrophe that would bring
- 0:18Speaker 1: the world to the edge of destruction. Odin, the All-Father,
- 0:23Speaker 1: would fall. Thor, the mighty god of thunder, would face
- 0:27Speaker 1: the greatest enemy he had ever known. Loki, the trickster
- 0:31Speaker 1: who had once walked among the gods, would return as
- 0:34Speaker 1: their enemy, and the nine realms would tremble as ancient
- 0:38Speaker 1: prophecies finally came to pass. But Ragnarok was not merely
- 0:42Speaker 1: a story of how the world would end. It was
- 0:45Speaker 1: also a story of what might rise from its ashes.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Long before the final battle, the gods of Asgard knew
- 0:52Speaker 1: that their fate had already been foretold. Odin had spent
- 0:56Speaker 1: ages seeking wisdom, sacrificing greatly in the hope of learning
- 1:00Speaker 1: the secrets of existence. He knew that even the gods
- 1:04Speaker 1: could not escape death. Among the terrible predictions was the
- 1:08Speaker 1: fate of his beloved son Balder, whose death had plunged
- 1:12Speaker 1: Asgard into grief. After Balder's death, Loki was captured and
- 1:17Speaker 1: bound beneath the earth. A serpent dripped venom onto his face,
- 1:21Speaker 1: while his devoted wife, Sigyn, tried to catch the poison
- 1:24Speaker 1: in a bowl. but the prophecy warned that Loki would
- 1:27Speaker 1: one day break free, and when he did, the final
- 1:31Speaker 1: destruction would begin. The first signs of Ragnarok would arrive
- 1:35Speaker 1: in the form of a terrible winter. For three years,
- 1:39Speaker 1: according to the best-known account, the world would endure the Fimbulwinter,
- 1:43Speaker 1: a relentless season of cold, suffering, and hardship. Snow would
- 1:48Speaker 1: cover the land, bitter winds would sweep across the wilderness,
- 1:52Speaker 1: the sun would offer little comfort, and the usual order
- 1:55Speaker 1: of human life would collapse. Brother would turn against brother.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Families would be divided. Trust would vanish, and violence would
- 2:04Speaker 1: spread across the world. The bonds holding civilization together would
- 2:08Speaker 1: begin to break. Then the heavens themselves would show signs
- 2:13Speaker 1: of disaster. The sun and moon would be swallowed by wolves,
- 2:17Speaker 1: plunging the world into darkness. The stars would disappear from
- 2:21Speaker 1: the sky. The earth would shake. Mountains would crumble, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: the chains that restrained monstrous beings would finally snap. Deep
- 2:29Speaker 1: beneath the earth, Loki would break free from his bonds.
- 2:33Speaker 1: In the realm of the dead, the ship Naglfar would
- 2:36Speaker 1: be prepared to sail. In the mythology, it was made
- 2:39Speaker 1: from the nails of the dead, and its arrival would
- 2:42Speaker 1: signal that the final battle was near. Loki would lead
- 2:46Speaker 1: the forces opposing the gods, while giants and monstrous creatures
- 2:51Speaker 1: gathered to march against Asgard. From the depths of the sea, Jormungandr,
- 2:56Speaker 1: the enormous world serpent, would rise and send poisonous waves
- 3:01Speaker 1: across the land. The wolf Fenrir would break loose, his
- 3:05Speaker 1: jaws stretching so wide that his upper jaw reached toward
- 3:09Speaker 1: the heavens while his lower jaw scraped the earth. And
- 3:13Speaker 1: from the fiery realm of Muspelheim would come Surtr, a
- 3:17Speaker 1: giant wielding a flaming sword, bringing fire and destruction in
- 3:21Speaker 1: his wake. The final battle, had begun. The gods prepared
- 3:26Speaker 1: to meet their enemies on the field of Vigrid. Odin,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the Allfather, advanced against Fenrir, the monstrous wolf whose strength
- 3:35Speaker 1: threatened the world itself. But despite Odin's wisdom and power,
- 3:40Speaker 1: the prophecy would not be denied. Fenrir swallowed Odin, bringing
- 3:45Speaker 1: the life of the great god to an end. Yet
- 3:48Speaker 1: Odin's son Vidar would avenge him. Wearing a powerful shoe
- 3:52Speaker 1: described in the myths, Vidar would seize Fenrir's jaws and
- 3:57Speaker 1: tear the wolf apart. Elsewhere, Thor confronted Jormungandr, the serpent
- 4:02Speaker 1: he had long considered one of his greatest enemies. Their
- 4:06Speaker 1: hatred stretched back through earlier adventures, and now they faced
- 4:10Speaker 1: each other for the last time. Thor struck the world
- 4:14Speaker 1: serpent with Mjolnir, his mighty hammer, and killed the creature.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But victory came at a terrible price. Jormungandr's venom poisoned Thor.
- 4:25Speaker 1: The thunder god managed only nine steps before collapsing and dying.
- 4:30Speaker 1: The gods were falling, one by one. Freyr faced Surtr,
- 4:35Speaker 1: but he lacked the powerful weapon he had once surrendered.
- 4:38Speaker 1: He fought bravely, yet Surtr's fiery sword brought about his defeat. Heimdall,
- 4:44Speaker 1: the watchman of the gods, confronted Loki. Their ancient hostility
- 4:49Speaker 1: ended in mutual destruction. as the two enemies killed one another.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The battle raged across the field, and the old world
- 4:57Speaker 1: began to burn. Surtr unleashed flames that swept across the earth.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Fire consumed the land, and the world sank beneath the sea.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The halls of the gods were destroyed. The familiar order
- 5:11Speaker 1: of the nine realms came to an end. For a moment,
- 5:17Speaker 1: it seemed that nothing could survive. And yet, Ragnarok was
- 5:22Speaker 1: not the end of all things. After the fire faded
- 5:26Speaker 1: and the waters began to withdraw, a new earth emerged
- 5:30Speaker 1: from the sea. The land was green again. Water flowed
- 5:34Speaker 1: through the valleys, and fields grew without anyone needing to
- 5:38Speaker 1: sow them. The world was renewed. Some of the gods survived.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Odin's sons, including Vidar and Vali, remained, and Thor's sons,
- 5:48Speaker 1: Mordi and Magni, inherited their father's hammer Mjolnir. Baldr and Hordr,
- 5:54Speaker 1: the brothers whose story had once brought such sorrow, were
- 5:57Speaker 1: also described as returning from the realm of the dead.
- 6:01Speaker 1: In the surviving tradition, a human couple named Lif and
- 6:04Speaker 1: Lifthrasir had sheltered through the catastrophe and would become the
- 6:08Speaker 1: ancestors of a renewed human world. Life would begin again.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The cycle of destruction and renewal had reached its turning point.
- 6:18Speaker 1: The story of Ragnarok has endured for centuries because it
- 6:21Speaker 1: captures a powerful idea. Even the strongest and wisest cannot
- 6:26Speaker 1: control every outcome. The gods knew their fate, and yet
- 6:31Speaker 1: they marched into battle. They fought not because victory was guaranteed,
- 6:35Speaker 1: but because their choices still mattered. Odin faced Fenrir. Thor
- 6:41Speaker 1: stood against the serpent. The gods met their enemies knowing
- 6:44Speaker 1: that their world might not survive. Their courage did not
- 6:48Speaker 1: save the old world, but their struggle became part of
- 6:52Speaker 1: the story of the new one. Perhaps that is the
- 6:55Speaker 1: deeper meaning of Ragnarok. Endings can be devastating, but they
- 6:59Speaker 1: do not always erase every possibility. Sometimes, from the ruins
- 7:04Speaker 1: of what was, something different begins. The old gods fell,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the world burned, and the sea swallowed the earth. Yet
- 7:13Speaker 1: the land rose again, and under a new sky, life returned.
- 7:19Speaker 1: This has been Legends and Fables 101, where ancient myths,
- 7:23Speaker 1: legendary gods, and timeless stories come alive. Until next time, remember,
- 7:29Speaker 1: even when an age comes to an end, the final
- 7:31Speaker 1: chapter may be the beginning of another story.
