- 0:00Speaker 1: Ryan, thank you so much for joining the Philly Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: We're really excited to have you. Jim Salisbury is also
- 0:05Speaker 1: on the show, but he couldn't make it, so I
- 0:08Speaker 1: asked Jim, I said, do you have any questions for
- 0:10Speaker 1: the big piece? And he said, I only have one question.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Please ask Ryan if he's still keeping it.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Crispy Man like always man with a two piece, like
- 0:19Speaker 2: a two piece with a biscuit. Steak's always coming through
- 0:22Speaker 2: Man steaks. I love him.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He had to ask that question, so he's gonna be
- 0:30Speaker 1: He's very happy.
- 0:32Speaker 3: No, you're keeping it Chrispy.
- 0:34Speaker 1: A lot of stuff we want to talk to you about,
- 0:36Speaker 1: of course, and one of them is, you know, you're
- 0:38Speaker 1: doing this new podcast. It's not even new right now,
- 0:42Speaker 1: but with with your young James as you like to
- 0:44Speaker 1: call him, on one podcast, and it's it's been a
- 0:47Speaker 1: lot of fun.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I listen, I'm a listener.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You've had Chase on, You've had Peter Martinez on, you
- 0:54Speaker 1: just had Simon Gratz, legend, Rashid Wallace on the show.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What have you enjoyed about it and what do you
- 1:01Speaker 1: how do you feel about being on the other end
- 1:03Speaker 1: and having to ask questions of I have to answer
- 1:09Speaker 1: the questions.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Oh well, first, no, greatly appreciate it, you know, listening
- 1:14Speaker 2: and tuning in. It's been a lot of fun. You know,
- 1:18Speaker 2: I had I had a lot of great mentors to
- 1:21Speaker 2: learn from over my career, you know, the John Salisbury's
- 1:25Speaker 2: and Todd's, Aleki's and and all of those folks that
- 1:28Speaker 2: would come into the clubhouse and just ask all different
- 1:31Speaker 2: kinds of questions. But but you know what, I went
- 1:34Speaker 2: to school for communications mass media, so you know, it's
- 1:38Speaker 2: it's the first thing was was just going and just
- 1:40Speaker 2: having a lot of fun with it and being able
- 1:42Speaker 2: to have the guests on and just kind of sit
- 1:44Speaker 2: back and chop it up as we like to speak
- 1:46Speaker 2: and and and hear their stories and uh, learn about
- 1:50Speaker 2: their paths to success and what they've gone through, their trials,
- 1:54Speaker 2: their errors, and being able to share that with everybody
- 1:56Speaker 2: has been something that's been really eye opening and uh
- 1:59Speaker 2: and a lot of fun doing so.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I had some questions about that, Like, you obviously had
- 2:05Speaker 4: some really.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Great guests on there.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Is there anybody in particular you haven't had on there
- 2:10Speaker 5: that you would consider like like your dream guest, I mean,
- 2:15Speaker 5: either in the baseball world or otherwise that you would
- 2:19Speaker 5: really love to have on there, anybody you had to
- 2:22Speaker 5: break it down with.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh man, I mean there's so many different people, I
- 2:27Speaker 2: think from different aspects. I think, you know, a sport
- 2:31Speaker 2: from the sporting aspect. I would love to get mj
- 2:34Speaker 2: on there, would love to get you know, Michael Jordan
- 2:36Speaker 2: on there, and he's one of the guys grew up
- 2:38Speaker 2: watching and and just kind of learn more about his story,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I think too, just as we try to hit different
- 2:46Speaker 2: genres right of people, different entertainers, you know, a Jay
- 2:51Speaker 2: Z or somebody like that would be great, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: kind of hear their perspectives on their past, because.
- 2:57Speaker 3: It's the cool thing about it is is you know, is.
- 3:03Speaker 2: The journeys are the backbone of the journeys are all
- 3:07Speaker 2: pretty much the same, right, but the past are different
- 3:11Speaker 2: in the sense of where it is, whether it's business,
- 3:15Speaker 2: whether it's music, whether it's sports. You still have to
- 3:17Speaker 2: put in the work, you have to put in the time,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you have to put in the grind, right, and there's
- 3:21Speaker 2: always going to be some type of hurdle that you've
- 3:26Speaker 2: got to get over. So how do you respond, how
- 3:28Speaker 2: do you react to that? You know, and everybody that's
- 3:31Speaker 2: you know, kind of had some type of success. We
- 3:33Speaker 2: had Michael Rubin on, you know, as one of our
- 3:35Speaker 2: earlier shows, and he was kind of going through his
- 3:38Speaker 2: trials and tribulations.
- 3:40Speaker 3: It's all about how you respond to it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So it's it's really cool here in everybody's different aspects
- 3:45Speaker 2: and perspectives on that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Definitely, I've learned a lot. You know, it was great
- 3:51Speaker 1: having Chase on, Having paid Re Martinez on was a
- 3:55Speaker 1: lot of fun.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I learned.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I learned some things about you guys that did not know.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I learned that your nickname, besides the Big Piece, is
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Big Sexy. I'm gonna leave it right there. If
- 4:05Speaker 1: you want to know why Ryan it's called the Big Sexy,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you got to go listen to Pedro Martinez podcast. But
- 4:11Speaker 1: if you learned anything new about j Rowl since you've
- 4:14Speaker 1: been doing this podcast.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I mean it's it's pretty much all still the usual suspect,
- 4:23Speaker 2: you know, like Jimmy, Jimmy is is smooth.
- 4:27Speaker 3: He's great, man.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I mean obviously you know I watch him on TV.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I watch you guys on TV. Ruby, you're doing an
- 4:33Speaker 2: amazing job, man. Congrats on on that, as you know too,
- 4:36Speaker 2: making making these types of transitions.
- 4:38Speaker 3: It's it's different, you know, when you're.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Like like Todd said in the beginning, it's like you
- 4:42Speaker 2: go from the person being asked the questions to the
- 4:45Speaker 2: person asking the questions. So it's all about, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 2: the deliveries and the flows and everything.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But Jimmy's great, man.
- 4:53Speaker 2: We just try to get out there, just have fun
- 4:55Speaker 2: and just continue to feed off each other. That's really cool.
- 4:58Speaker 6: You know, you've gone through like a bunch of things.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Personally, I'm sure you're like sort of I would assume
- 5:05Speaker 4: you're keep an eye on what's going on with Kyle
- 5:07Speaker 4: Schwarber with his season and the fact that he's you know,
- 5:13Speaker 4: sort of closing in.
- 5:14Speaker 6: A little bit on your home run record.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I mean, that was an historic season that I got
- 5:19Speaker 5: to enjoy and watch and and and uh, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 5: obviously watched your overall development as a you know, as
- 5:26Speaker 5: a slugger and as a hitter.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I was wondering, like.
- 5:31Speaker 6: You know, are you following what's going on? Are you
- 5:34Speaker 6: rooting for him?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Are you not rooting for him? Are you? I mean,
- 5:37Speaker 3: how big of a.
- 5:38Speaker 6: Phillies fan are you?
- 5:39Speaker 2: What's what's your your take on this whole man? I
- 5:42Speaker 2: follow the boys. I follow them all the time. I
- 5:44Speaker 2: love I'm a Schwarber fan. I love Kyle, Like, Uh.
- 5:48Speaker 2: The funny thing is is that when we trained together
- 5:52Speaker 2: in Tampa because we both had we were both part
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the same agency, We're both with c A, and
- 5:57Speaker 2: we trained together in Tampa at a spot called Saddlebrook.
- 6:01Speaker 3: So this was when he was first breaking into the league.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I think he was still with the with the Cubs,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and so I got to see him, you know, we
- 6:08Speaker 2: were training, working out and doing all that kind of
- 6:10Speaker 2: stuff and hitting, and I was watching him.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I was like, this dude's got some some sock him.
- 6:15Speaker 3: He's got some stupid pop.
- 6:17Speaker 2: But even more so, like he was just a great,
- 6:20Speaker 2: like down to earth like humble person, right, And so
- 6:25Speaker 2: I was like, this dude's gonna be He's gonna be good.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So it doesn't surprise me one bit. I'm excited for him.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I'm rooting for him, cheering for him. I know it's
- 6:35Speaker 2: the fans. The fans love it, you know what I did.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And in two thousand and six, like it's one of
- 6:41Speaker 2: those things where.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It was just a pure.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Kind of like video game blackout moment in a sense,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I remember telling Jimmy. The one time I think I
- 6:50Speaker 2: told Jimmy. I think it was on a stretch. I
- 6:52Speaker 2: was like, man, Jay, like I haven't hit a homer
- 6:54Speaker 2: in like a week or something. He looked at me
- 6:55Speaker 2: and like he said, shut up, like I'm struggling. I
- 7:00Speaker 2: was like, I'm struggling. Probably haven't hit a homer like
- 7:01Speaker 2: a week or something like that. And he's like, shut up.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think I went and hit like two that night
- 7:05Speaker 2: or whatnot. But when you're in a zone like he's
- 7:08Speaker 2: in his zone right now and putting together great AB's.
- 7:10Speaker 2: That's the other thing too, is he doesn't waste abs.
- 7:15Speaker 2: That's been key and and rub as you know, like
- 7:19Speaker 2: you get a guy. Kyle's a guy that when he
- 7:22Speaker 2: gets going, he can carry a team. And you know,
- 7:25Speaker 2: I think with with what the guys have been able
- 7:27Speaker 2: to do thus far and getting into the postseason right now,
- 7:30Speaker 2: everybody's clicking on all cylinders, which is which is what
- 7:33Speaker 2: you want and what you need. But you know, Kyle's
- 7:36Speaker 2: been a guy to when when they needed him, he
- 7:38Speaker 2: can put them on his back.
- 7:41Speaker 7: Tod Father, you and me grew up in Jersey. We
- 7:44Speaker 7: liked to collect cards. But the way the process got
- 7:48Speaker 7: was ridiculous. You open up a pack, there's a bunch
- 7:53Speaker 7: of cards you don't care about. Then you want to
- 7:54Speaker 7: get certain ones graded takes forever right, then you want
- 7:57Speaker 7: to maybe sell one.
- 7:59Speaker 3: It's such a to do.
- 8:00Speaker 7: Arena Club has been the solution for us.
- 8:02Speaker 8: Arena Club has been a solution for everybody. You go online,
- 8:06Speaker 8: go to Arena Club and you check out what they have,
- 8:09Speaker 8: put a little cash down. You might get one of
- 8:10Speaker 8: the best cards that you've ever seen in your life,
- 8:13Speaker 8: and autograph card and guess what, if you don't like
- 8:15Speaker 8: the card, easily you could sell it back and make
- 8:18Speaker 8: a little cash. You never know what to expect. It's
- 8:21Speaker 8: a cool way of doing it. You're gonna get a
- 8:22Speaker 8: surprise every time. And if you're in the cards, this
- 8:24Speaker 8: is something you really need to get into.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Right now.
- 8:27Speaker 7: You can get twenty percent off your first slap pack
- 8:29Speaker 7: or card purchase by going to Arena club dot com,
- 8:32Speaker 7: slash foul and use code foul like Todd Father is
- 8:35Speaker 7: talking about. With those slap packs, every pack is a
- 8:37Speaker 7: grail that's at least twenty x the price of the pack.
- 8:41Speaker 7: Check it out.
- 8:42Speaker 3: What do you like about his swing?
- 8:43Speaker 1: I mean he's got such a short, quick, fast, powerful swing.
- 8:49Speaker 3: What do you kind of admire about it?
- 8:50Speaker 1: What do you like about watching them hit?
- 8:51Speaker 2: I guess I mean it's just that so like when
- 8:55Speaker 2: you watch guys that hit home wrongs, there's always a
- 8:59Speaker 2: certain an aspect to their swing, and there's always like
- 9:05Speaker 2: a certain type of I don't know, just different explosiveness
- 9:09Speaker 2: and finish to their swing. Like I always loved watching
- 9:11Speaker 2: Prince filled or hit homers, Like I loved when we
- 9:14Speaker 2: played Milwaukee, right because when Prince hit a homer, it
- 9:18Speaker 2: was almost like the bat would just explode out of
- 9:20Speaker 2: his hands.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Kyle's one of those guys where it's like it's so
- 9:24Speaker 2: quick and it's just everything stops. I don't know, Like
- 9:28Speaker 2: when I'm watching it's it just seems like everything after
- 9:30Speaker 2: the swing just just stops because the ball, the ball
- 9:36Speaker 2: just explodes off his bat and it's so quick and
- 9:39Speaker 2: it's so short. As you said that, he just puts
- 9:42Speaker 2: the fat part on the bat, of fat part of
- 9:45Speaker 2: the bat on the ball, and the rest just takes
- 9:48Speaker 2: care of itself.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Man.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I mean, it's like he's not trying to It's like
- 9:51Speaker 2: he's not trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It's like he's just letting the ball run into the bat,
- 9:57Speaker 2: or letting the bat run into the ball.
- 10:00Speaker 5: I admired about you is that you had that ability
- 10:02Speaker 5: to just take a nice, smooth, easy swing and drive
- 10:06Speaker 5: the ball. I mean, you hadn't majestic home runs even
- 10:09Speaker 5: the opposite way like that.
- 10:10Speaker 9: It was like you were like a left handed hitting,
- 10:14Speaker 9: power hitting right handed hitter. When you were hitting balls out,
- 10:19Speaker 9: it was really really awesome. I mean you always had
- 10:22Speaker 9: that sort of that.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Ability to to drive the ball the other way.
- 10:25Speaker 6: Can you talk a little bit about how Charlie's influence
- 10:29Speaker 6: when you were a little bit younger as you were
- 10:31Speaker 6: moving forward, how that like all that that development of
- 10:35Speaker 6: like hitting the ball to the right side of the
- 10:37Speaker 6: field and you know you're still utilizing that power. What
- 10:41Speaker 6: kind of influence Charlie had on your swing?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Charlie was great.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Charlie always had, you know, the positive reinforcement in building
- 10:50Speaker 2: it up and for me actually learning I was a
- 10:53Speaker 2: dead pool hitter in high school. Growing up, I did
- 10:57Speaker 2: not know what center field or left field was because
- 11:00Speaker 2: my thought process I was very raw. So my thought
- 11:02Speaker 2: process was was if I'm not hitting it down here,
- 11:05Speaker 2: I'm late. Right if I'm hitting it anywhere else, I'm late.
- 11:08Speaker 2: And it wasn't actually until I got to college that
- 11:12Speaker 2: my coach shout out my man G. Keith Gutton, Missouri
- 11:17Speaker 2: State University. G my man G was the one who
- 11:22Speaker 2: opened me up to the entire field. So he took
- 11:25Speaker 2: me and he said, hey, we're going to make your
- 11:29Speaker 2: foul polls from right center to left center, which basically
- 11:34Speaker 2: it just opened up the entire field for me, and
- 11:37Speaker 2: it actually slowed everything down to where I was able
- 11:40Speaker 2: to recognize pitches a lot better because I stayed up
- 11:42Speaker 2: the middle of the field now where Charlie came into
- 11:45Speaker 2: play in the minor leagues where he came in, Charlie
- 11:50Speaker 2: would notice at times I would close myself off too much. So,
- 11:55Speaker 2: just like with Tony how Tomy would hold the bat
- 11:57Speaker 2: out towards the pitcher, League had me start to do that,
- 12:01Speaker 2: so it aligned myself up where I was open and
- 12:04Speaker 2: can see the picture.
- 12:05Speaker 3: With both eyes.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And then that helped me even more to where it's like, okay,
- 12:11Speaker 2: some of those balls that were more middle middle end,
- 12:13Speaker 2: I was able to kind of turn on them and
- 12:15Speaker 2: then stay back up the middle and then again go
- 12:18Speaker 2: go away.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So the fun part about it was was I used
- 12:23Speaker 3: to Uh.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I feel like I used to bait pictures in because Rube,
- 12:26Speaker 2: you used to see me all the time. I stood
- 12:28Speaker 2: way off the plate yep. And so I swung a
- 12:31Speaker 2: longer bat. I swung a bigger bat. My bat was
- 12:33Speaker 2: like thirty five inches thirty four ounces yep. And so
- 12:37Speaker 2: those guys would see me so off, so far off
- 12:39Speaker 2: the plate that they would throw it middle, middle, away
- 12:44Speaker 2: and sometimes even off the plate away, and I was
- 12:46Speaker 2: still able to get barrel on it. So for me,
- 12:49Speaker 2: I wanted to try to stay in the middle of
- 12:50Speaker 2: the field. So by doing that, I stepped off the plate.
- 12:53Speaker 2: So now middle is away, away, is away, in is
- 12:58Speaker 2: now middle, and anything that's more off the plate in like, yeah,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I can catch it. I think there was one pitch
- 13:06Speaker 2: that uh. And the reason why I don't forget this
- 13:11Speaker 2: is because I don't know how I hit it was
- 13:13Speaker 2: off of uh. There was like a slider from John
- 13:18Speaker 2: Smoltz that was like down and in like off the plate,
- 13:21Speaker 2: and I don't know what happened. I just got somehow
- 13:24Speaker 2: got the barrel to it. But again, being off the plate,
- 13:28Speaker 2: there's no other way, if I'm on the plate, I'm
- 13:30Speaker 2: missing at or I'm following it off my shin.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You mentioned like that that the slider off Smoltz. Do
- 13:35Speaker 1: you remember does anything stick out about that fifty eight
- 13:38Speaker 1: home run season any one of those specific home runs?
- 13:40Speaker 1: Is that the obvious one, that Tim Hudson three homer
- 13:43Speaker 1: game when he hit fifty to fifty one fifty two?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Anything else jump out about that that season?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah? There was two. There was.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I mean obviously that game was was fun and it
- 13:56Speaker 2: was fun to watch.
- 13:57Speaker 3: That was that was. That was a good day.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And then and I would say the Mike, you seen
- 14:05Speaker 2: a home run the game, but that the one to
- 14:09Speaker 2: the third deck and seeing uh, Matt Dog and Brett
- 14:13Speaker 2: Myer's reaction like when it landed. So I mean it
- 14:17Speaker 2: was it was when I when I hit it, I
- 14:19Speaker 2: was like that felt There's those times where you hit
- 14:24Speaker 2: a ball and you feel like you didn't even feel it,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and I was like, oh, that felt good, Like I
- 14:28Speaker 2: didn't even feel it. And then the next thing it
- 14:30Speaker 2: was just you know, landing the third deck. So yeah,
- 14:35Speaker 2: that that reaction that was that was good.
- 14:38Speaker 3: And I will say there was another one. There was
- 14:40Speaker 3: another one in.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Houston groupe that I feel like I got robbed in Houston.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I think it was off Who is it?
- 14:49Speaker 8: Like?
- 14:49Speaker 3: Was it Wandy Rodriguez? I hit it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I think it was against Wandy and I hit it Appo.
- 14:57Speaker 2: It was a day game in Houston. Smoked the guy
- 15:00Speaker 2: in the chest in the front row in Houston and
- 15:03Speaker 2: left field, and they called it a double because of
- 15:06Speaker 2: the glare from the sun, so they couldn't tell.
- 15:08Speaker 3: And we didn't have replay. Why back then?
- 15:13Speaker 4: That's one question I had about so so people often
- 15:22Speaker 4: ask this question. I mean, do you ever really or
- 15:26Speaker 4: how many times in your career do you think you
- 15:28Speaker 4: actually tried to hit a ball out of the ballpark,
- 15:32Speaker 4: Like on this particular swing, I'm going to try, I'm
- 15:36Speaker 4: thinking about hitting it out. Did you do that a
- 15:39Speaker 4: lot or did it just happen naturally? I did it
- 15:43Speaker 4: one time I actually hit a home run with in
- 15:45Speaker 4: the minor leagues where I actually wanted to hit one
- 15:47Speaker 4: home run out.
- 15:48Speaker 6: That was the only time I ever did it my
- 15:49Speaker 6: whole life. Now I couldn't hit home runs, but I
- 15:52Speaker 6: was just curious, like a power hitter like yourself, do
- 15:55Speaker 6: you actually.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Think to the go and you know one particular swing. Okay,
- 16:00Speaker 3: I'm hitting this ball out of the ballpark.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Majority of the time, it's all natural, like it just
- 16:06Speaker 2: it's just reactionary, and it happens. There's sometimes where either
- 16:09Speaker 2: like you get into a certain count and you know
- 16:12Speaker 2: like you're a thousand percent sure, like this is what
- 16:15Speaker 2: this guy is gonna throw me, like I'm not missing this. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:21Speaker 2: I forget that. I forget the guy's name. It was
- 16:26Speaker 2: a picture on the Nationals. I think I hit like
- 16:28Speaker 2: two grand slams off the guy and he was the
- 16:31Speaker 2: second ball that I hit in the third deck, and
- 16:34Speaker 2: I just remember when he threw it. I was I
- 16:37Speaker 2: was sitting dead red change up, and I remember I
- 16:39Speaker 2: was like, he throws his change up, I'm hitting this
- 16:41Speaker 2: thing out of the ballpark like we're going on the street.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And when as soon as I hit, I was like, oof,
- 16:47Speaker 3: that might leave everything.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I felt like it felt better than the one off
- 16:51Speaker 2: of you've seen it, and that that time was like
- 16:55Speaker 2: one of those times where I knew, like, Okay, if
- 16:58Speaker 2: they give me this pitch, I'm gonna be But you
- 17:01Speaker 2: have to be feeling good though, too, right your swing
- 17:03Speaker 2: and everything's got to be feeling good to where you're
- 17:05Speaker 2: even telling yourself that as a hitter, because you can't
- 17:08Speaker 2: go up there feeling like garbage and be like, all right,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna go up here and I'm gonna hit this
- 17:12Speaker 2: out like everything.
- 17:13Speaker 3: You got to be in the flow right there.
- 17:15Speaker 4: It's funny you should say that because for me, I mean,
- 17:17Speaker 4: this is a story about me. But you remember Claude
- 17:20Speaker 4: os Dave Ostein was a big change up guy. But
- 17:23Speaker 4: Claude Osting used to be a pitcher pitching coach for
- 17:25Speaker 4: many many years in the Big Land, pitch in the
- 17:27Speaker 4: big leagues. So Dave Ostein, same thing. I sat on
- 17:30Speaker 4: a change up, but he's towing me a change up.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I'm gonna hit this one out And I actually hit
- 17:33Speaker 4: it out of the stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas, which
- 17:38Speaker 4: was weird because I had no pop, but he actually
- 17:41Speaker 4: threw it. Oh my goodness. But it's funny that it
- 17:44Speaker 4: was a similar bridge. I just can't imagine that you
- 17:48Speaker 4: ever put yourself in a position to do that like
- 17:50Speaker 4: all the time, and so it's interesting to actually pinpoint
- 17:54Speaker 4: the one.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Time that you know you did well, you know what, ahead,
- 17:59Speaker 2: oh go ahead, go ahead, no no, no, no, go right. Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 2: I was just I was just gonna say because it
- 18:04Speaker 2: made me think back to nine, the whole get me
- 18:07Speaker 2: to the plate thing, right, and I just remember, I
- 18:12Speaker 2: don't know what happened. I just again another blackout moment
- 18:14Speaker 2: over the course of my career. But when I went
- 18:17Speaker 2: when I went through it because I knew what the
- 18:19Speaker 2: situation was and with like Houston, like Houston Street, right,
- 18:22Speaker 2: because we're playing the Rockies and Houston was my teammate
- 18:26Speaker 2: in the Fall League, so I'd gotten to see a
- 18:29Speaker 2: lot of Houston like pitch.
- 18:32Speaker 3: And so I was just like, all right, I know
- 18:34Speaker 3: what he does. I know what his ball does.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I'm like if he if he does this, I'm hitting
- 18:38Speaker 2: it out, Like, just give me to the plate, like
- 18:42Speaker 2: I I'm gonna.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Hit it out. And then I just I just missed
- 18:45Speaker 3: it and hit that top spin and hit it off
- 18:48Speaker 3: the wall. And yeah.
- 18:50Speaker 2: So it was It's like one of those things where
- 18:52Speaker 2: you just it just kind of comes together when you
- 18:55Speaker 2: know exactly what a guy is gonna try to do
- 18:57Speaker 2: and you're feeling good enough to where it's like, hey,
- 19:00Speaker 2: all right, if you get me to the plate like this,
- 19:03Speaker 2: we're going.
- 19:04Speaker 3: To win this game. Because it's it's going to go out. Well.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Kyle Shureber when he finally hit his fiftieth I know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: he said, once he got the forty nine, he said,
- 19:12Speaker 1: he was kind of thinking about fifty a lot. Were
- 19:14Speaker 1: you thinking after you hit fifty eight? Were you thinking
- 19:19Speaker 1: I can smell sixty those last few or not?
- 19:23Speaker 7: You know what it was?
- 19:25Speaker 3: You know what.
- 19:27Speaker 2: You subliminally Yeah, yeah, like in the but it wasn't
- 19:32Speaker 2: like one of those things where I'm thinking about it
- 19:34Speaker 2: every single day. It's just like, oh, yeah, like I'm
- 19:38Speaker 2: going to get there. You know, it's I'm going to
- 19:41Speaker 2: get there, but I'm not trying to get there, you
- 19:44Speaker 2: know what I mean. So it was like it's going
- 19:46Speaker 2: to come by me. Just continue to do what it
- 19:49Speaker 2: is that I'm doing. And like I said, the guy
- 19:51Speaker 2: in Houston that got hit in the chest, well lost
- 19:55Speaker 2: a one late.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Season the fifty nine because then the sixties right there,
- 20:02Speaker 4: Oh it would be.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be right there.
- 20:04Speaker 2: But you know, it's it's one of those things to
- 20:07Speaker 2: where it's like I was so young in my career,
- 20:09Speaker 2: that was my first full season, to where it's like okay,
- 20:12Speaker 2: like you don't realize what you did until you actually
- 20:18Speaker 2: get a chance to like sit back and look back
- 20:21Speaker 2: on on what you did and I and I look
- 20:23Speaker 2: at it and I'm like, I don't know what the
- 20:25Speaker 2: hell happened that year?
- 20:26Speaker 3: Like I was, things just all came.
- 20:28Speaker 2: They all because you look at it and you and
- 20:30Speaker 2: you say, man like wow, like that was that was special?
- 20:36Speaker 3: It was really special. Yeah, it was.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I don't want to we really appreciate the time. I
- 20:42Speaker 1: just got a couple more. I wanted to ask you
- 20:44Speaker 1: when you get Chase on you and Jimmy kept saying, oh,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, you were cereal. You were cereal, which I
- 20:51Speaker 1: guess meant like mentally he was like a serial killer?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Is that what that's coming from?
- 20:56Speaker 2: Uh?
- 20:56Speaker 3: I mean that's safe to say, that's yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So we've had people on and they've told like a
- 21:02Speaker 1: good Chase story, Like what's your good Chase story? Is
- 21:04Speaker 1: there a serial Chase story that you could tell?
- 21:09Speaker 3: Wow, Chase, I mean Chase.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Everybody got to see Chase like on the field, so
- 21:16Speaker 2: Chase was always hard nose. He was like, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 2: the the hustle guy all that, but Chase off the
- 21:22Speaker 2: field was like a joker man like he would he
- 21:25Speaker 2: was sneaky. Chase was Chase was sneaky man, and he'd
- 21:29Speaker 2: he'd be doing all kind of like jokes and and
- 21:31Speaker 2: and and stuff like that.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I don't know if I got any uh.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Good appropriate stuff because it's probably a family.
- 21:44Speaker 8: But.
- 21:47Speaker 1: That I was gonna say, you've seen him smash helmets
- 21:50Speaker 1: and batrax and stuff.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, Well you know what's funny is is
- 21:54Speaker 2: like the things that I would always find funny. So Jimmy, Shane,
- 22:00Speaker 2: Chase and myself always hitting the same group, and we
- 22:03Speaker 2: had Mick bill Meyer was our VP guy, and so
- 22:06Speaker 2: like Ruben was, you see it all the time. So
- 22:08Speaker 2: it's like if Chase was kind of like scuffling hitting wise,
- 22:11Speaker 2: or he didn't feel good, like Chase would just have
- 22:15Speaker 2: these this mini explosion every once in a while during
- 22:19Speaker 2: batting practice.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And so.
- 22:22Speaker 2: One time mixed throwing and Chase just can't get his
- 22:26Speaker 2: rhythm going. He's just feeling like crap or whatever. Swings missed,
- 22:30Speaker 2: like hits it into the into the top of the
- 22:35Speaker 2: batting cage.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Fires is bad at the l screen.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And he's walking out and then just like fires the
- 22:43Speaker 2: ball back into the batting cage, not throwing it at Chase,
- 22:46Speaker 2: but he just fired it back in I was like,
- 22:49Speaker 2: I'm hitting after Chase. I always hit after Chase, and
- 22:51Speaker 2: so I was like, all right, well, I guess we're
- 22:55Speaker 2: ready to go. I don't know if he's swinging anymore,
- 22:57Speaker 2: but be ready for this fastball. Get in here, go
- 23:00Speaker 2: take these rounds and see what happens. But he would
- 23:03Speaker 2: have some like hilarious snaps. And for all of us
- 23:07Speaker 2: who knew Chase, like we're standing there like Shane, and
- 23:10Speaker 2: Shane's dying laughing. Jimmy's dying like I'm laughing, And I'm like,
- 23:15Speaker 2: all right, Nick, you good bro, Like we can take
- 23:17Speaker 2: a little bit off if you know, if you if
- 23:19Speaker 2: you want.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Well, So that's this is the great part about the
- 23:24Speaker 1: six Woman podcast.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You do a Jimmy.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I was listening in the Pedro Martinez episode, and I
- 23:28Speaker 1: also learned that Pedro called him a snapper or something
- 23:32Speaker 1: like that.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Right, He's always he was always snapping. Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 23:38Speaker 1: It was.
- 23:38Speaker 2: It was a good quality snap every once in a while.
- 23:40Speaker 2: But but you had to love his his competitive nature
- 23:45Speaker 2: and in what it was. And Chase always would about
- 23:48Speaker 2: playing a game the right way, and I loved him
- 23:50Speaker 2: as Chase was one of those guys, and guys would say,
- 23:52Speaker 2: it's like you love him on your team and you
- 23:55Speaker 2: hated playing against him because of how because of how
- 23:59Speaker 2: he played, you know what I mean. Like people would say, oh,
- 24:02Speaker 2: Chase was dirty. I was like, no, Chase, Chase isn't dirty.
- 24:05Speaker 2: It's like he just he plays hard. Like we grew
- 24:08Speaker 2: up watching baseball a certain way, and it's like if
- 24:11Speaker 2: you're gonna if you're gonna go in. He's coming in
- 24:14Speaker 2: to try to break up a double player. He's trying
- 24:16Speaker 2: to come in and break up, you know, and out
- 24:17Speaker 2: so you don't get him if so you don't get
- 24:21Speaker 2: somebody else out. He's gonna play hard, he's gonna hustle,
- 24:23Speaker 2: and that's that's what he did.
- 24:26Speaker 5: And then I had one more I had one more question.
- 24:30Speaker 5: I know, obviously you've had an amazing career. It's so
- 24:35Speaker 5: cool to see you do the stuff that you're doing
- 24:36Speaker 5: off the field. We've had a couple of guests over
- 24:41Speaker 5: time where they'll be like, in some random place, Howie
- 24:45Speaker 5: Rosman's happened to him? And uh, I think Chase went
- 24:49Speaker 5: through it in a couple of different places where you know,
- 24:52Speaker 5: people would randomly say, like world lefing champions or you know,
- 24:56Speaker 5: stuff like that, Howie.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Rose and Go Birds.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Have you been in like any weird or like remote
- 25:02Speaker 5: places in your travels where people like come up to
- 25:05Speaker 5: recognize and say, you know, go Phills or have you
- 25:09Speaker 5: Have you had any of those types of experiences because
- 25:12Speaker 5: we've heard some funny stories over the years, and I'm
- 25:15Speaker 5: not sure if you've gone through that too.
- 25:18Speaker 3: So I got a twofold for you.
- 25:20Speaker 2: So one I was like, we we went on vacation,
- 25:23Speaker 2: we did like a European vacation this year, and a
- 25:27Speaker 2: lot of Philly fans in Italy, so we ran into
- 25:30Speaker 2: a lot of people from Philly.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yeah, in Italy.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And but to give you the the kind of fun thing,
- 25:40Speaker 2: I was actually at a Lucha libre wrestling match and
- 25:48Speaker 2: had a guy like Mexico in Mexico here in Atlanta.
- 25:53Speaker 3: There's a guy here in Atlanta that puts him on.
- 25:56Speaker 8: And so.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Buddy of mine was like, hey, hey, right, like I'll
- 26:01Speaker 2: be in town. You want to come to this lucha libre.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I was like, all right, cool, let's go. So I
- 26:05Speaker 2: went over there to that and it was like that
- 26:07Speaker 2: was an experience.
- 26:08Speaker 8: Man, it was.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It was interesting. It was like really cool and funny.
- 26:13Speaker 3: It was like I like, I enjoyed myself. It was
- 26:16Speaker 3: like it was crazy. We did have a person come
- 26:19Speaker 3: up and say, what's up.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Phillies fans meant Philly fans.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Phillies fans. They are everywhere, There's no doubt it.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And my last one is, what, uh tell me why
- 26:32Speaker 1: you think this group? You said you kind of watched
- 26:34Speaker 1: the Phillies. Why do you think this group might have
- 26:37Speaker 1: a chance to win the World Series? Is you're what
- 26:39Speaker 1: do you what do you like about their chances? Or
- 26:40Speaker 1: what do you like about this team?
- 26:41Speaker 2: What I like about their chances is I mean, obviously,
- 26:44Speaker 2: look this this day and age of ball, I think
- 26:49Speaker 2: we're getting back to the point to where everybody's understanding
- 26:52Speaker 2: how important starting pitching is in the postseason. You know,
- 26:56Speaker 2: during the regular season you kind of get away with,
- 26:58Speaker 2: you know, letting guys go five innings or whatever. But
- 27:01Speaker 2: I think, you know, as I've always said, when a
- 27:05Speaker 2: guy is going going well, if you can get it
- 27:07Speaker 2: to the right hands at the end, the less hands
- 27:10Speaker 2: that have the opportunity to touch it, the less the
- 27:12Speaker 2: less chances there are for somebody to mess up.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So I think the importance of starting pitching, and with
- 27:20Speaker 2: this day and age, man, these guys have you know,
- 27:24Speaker 2: barring now that you know obviously with Wheeler out, you've
- 27:27Speaker 2: still got four pretty good starting pitchers. Right So You've
- 27:32Speaker 2: got Ranger, You've got Lizardo, You've got Sanchez, who's been
- 27:35Speaker 2: amazing all year, and you got No No, you got
- 27:38Speaker 2: Nola right where now most of the time with the
- 27:41Speaker 2: with the way the postseason is, you really only need three,
- 27:45Speaker 2: you know, because you've got the off days in between
- 27:47Speaker 2: to be able to continue to set up your your
- 27:49Speaker 2: your your rotations or whatnot. So I like that from
- 27:53Speaker 2: that standpoint, you know, being able to either put guys
- 27:56Speaker 2: kind of back to back if you need to, and
- 27:58Speaker 2: you can set up your rotation however you I will
- 28:00Speaker 2: put Rangers for Az up against anybody's ace any day
- 28:03Speaker 2: of the week, and that dude's gonna give you an
- 28:06Speaker 2: opportunity to win. Christopher Sanchez has been pitching out of
- 28:08Speaker 2: his mind.
- 28:09Speaker 3: He continues to do that. That that right there, you
- 28:11Speaker 3: got too. You can put No No and.
- 28:14Speaker 2: And uh Lozardo you know back to back as well.
- 28:18Speaker 2: You still got tied whoever you want to throw on there.
- 28:21Speaker 2: You still got some depth at that starting position. But
- 28:23Speaker 2: what I also like is the bottom of the lineup
- 28:27Speaker 2: has been coming through for the Phillies, and that is key, Rube.
- 28:32Speaker 2: You know, like when we were winning, everybody was hitting,
- 28:34Speaker 2: you know, the one through five, those usual suspects are
- 28:37Speaker 2: gonna be what it's gonna be. But I think where
- 28:39Speaker 2: it's one is in the trenches where you get those
- 28:41Speaker 2: guys six to nine that can get there. So it's
- 28:45Speaker 2: almost like if those guys can continue to do what
- 28:48Speaker 2: they're doing, and in the times where the top is
- 28:51Speaker 2: not getting it done, but the bottom is starting to
- 28:53Speaker 2: come through, that's gonna give you more opportunity to sit
- 28:55Speaker 2: there and try to go win as well. So these
- 28:57Speaker 2: guys are clicking on all cylinders and play baseball. Get
- 29:01Speaker 2: them on, get them over, get him in. It ain't sexy.
- 29:05Speaker 2: The analysts don't like it, but damn it. We about
- 29:08Speaker 2: w's at the end of the day. So that's what
- 29:10Speaker 2: it comes down to is at this point, like all
- 29:14Speaker 2: the other stuff kind of goes out of the window.
- 29:16Speaker 2: You got to start playing baseball. Like if you got
- 29:17Speaker 2: to play small ball, whatever it is that you gotta do.
- 29:19Speaker 2: The year they went to the World Series, they played
- 29:21Speaker 2: small ball they were butting guys over, getting them on,
- 29:24Speaker 2: getting them over, and getting them in.
- 29:25Speaker 3: That's it.
- 29:26Speaker 8: You know.
- 29:26Speaker 3: The Diamondbacks did it to them the next year.
- 29:29Speaker 2: So if you notice, like when you get to the postseason,
- 29:32Speaker 2: everybody starts kind of okay, Hey, the homer is great,
- 29:36Speaker 2: we'll take it, but we've got to be able to
- 29:39Speaker 2: manufacture runs.
- 29:40Speaker 3: And that's what they've been able to do thus far
- 29:42Speaker 3: towards the end of the season.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And I think in order for them to do what
- 29:45Speaker 2: they want to do and get to the mountaintop, you
- 29:46Speaker 2: got to keep doing that. You gotta find ways to
- 29:48Speaker 2: get runs across the board.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Chooches walk off from the World Series, man ball hit
- 29:53Speaker 1: about three feet in the plate and bounce straight up,
- 29:56Speaker 1: straight up high to Evan Longoria.
- 29:58Speaker 3: No shot, that's right, speed kills exactly right.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Well, Ryan, thanks a lot.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Everybody.
