- 0:05Let me in your ear. I got something you need to hear.
- 0:08Turn the volume up so it's loud and clear. A podcast where we talk about politics
- 0:13and culture. A script is no limits.
- 0:15Like a 504th soldier. We're not pretenders. Ain't no agendas.
- 0:18Our only plan is to keep it 100 and do it for the fam. Yeah.
- 0:25What up, what up, what up? What's going on? I'm Six Mill, keeping it true. It's your boy, KG.
- 0:31Welcome to episode 36 of for the fam podcast,
- 0:38i'm at a loss so it's funny you say that we got celtic shack we got marcus smart you know what,
- 0:48Let's go with Rasheed Wallace. Rasheed Wallace. I'll take Rah-Rah because I'm
- 0:55like, who in the hell can he pick at 36? Paul Silas.
- 1:00Okay. That's a good one. That's a good one. Or Kevon Looney.
- 1:04He more briefly. Let's stick with Rasheed Wallace.
- 1:10Tom Thomas. Let's stick with Rasheed Wallace.
- 1:14Yes. Hey, bro, this list I'm looking at is. Terrible. It's crazy some of the
- 1:19people that have worn 36.
- 1:22Other than the brothers on here, the only one I know is Dave Cowens.
- 1:27Yeah, all week I'm just like 36, 36, 36 like nobody wears 36.
- 1:34I couldn't even think of nobody in football. Right.
- 1:37Hell, well, definitely not hockey, but football or nothing. Yeah,
- 1:41it's really just one of those numbers. So, yeah, you're right.
- 1:44Rasheed Wallace it is, bro.
- 1:46That is the pick. Anyway, what are we going to get into today?
- 1:51So today we want to talk about liquor stores in the black community.
- 1:56Uh-huh. Why there's so many of them. And we'll touch on several different,
- 2:00you know, from liquor stores, banks, grocery stores, etc.
- 2:03But the main topic is liquor stores.
- 2:06All right. So...
- 2:08Here's what I want you guys to do, because we we we won't have much quantitative,
- 2:13data to support these claims that we're going to make.
- 2:18Not because it's inaccurate, but because only a few people have actually done the studies on this.
- 2:26So we'll we'll have some stats and we'll try and remember to name the sources.
- 2:31But most of this is just things that we know from lived experience. Mm hmm.
- 2:38So if you don't believe me and you just happen to live in a black neighborhood
- 2:45or black community or you live close to a black neighborhood or black community.
- 2:53Just pay attention next time you're driving through to how many liquor stores you actually see.
- 3:01You'll be shocked and you'll recognize and realize that we are not making this up,
- 3:09when we say that there is a big disparity between the amount of liquor stores
- 3:16in black neighborhoods slash communities versus white neighborhoods. Can I give you a brief?
- 3:23Yeah. Statistic. Yeah. So there was a there's a study done on Oakland.
- 3:29One in every two hundred ninety eight residents in the black community.
- 3:32That's how many liquor stores. One for every two hundred ninety eight.
- 3:35Now, we know how big Oakland is.
- 3:38You think about that in the white area, Piedmont.
- 3:43One every three thousand. Yeah. Basically, it's like a one to three,
- 3:49one to four ratio between black neighborhoods and white neighborhoods when you
- 3:56look at it as far as liquor stores.
- 3:58And and listen, not going to sit here and pretend like I don't drink.
- 4:03My my my bro KG does not drink. I still think that's amazing.
- 4:09I occasionally do have a drink. I'm more of a social drinker.
- 4:14So I'm not going to just sit here and like poo-poo on, you know,
- 4:18liquor in itself or alcohol use in itself. I'm not going to do that.
- 4:24But we will on the business model. Well, yeah, I mean, because...
- 4:31The easy access, and listen, we're not going to claim that anyone is forcing
- 4:38someone else to take a drink.
- 4:40We're not making that claim at all, but the easy access definitely contributes
- 4:47to the deviancy or, excuse me, delinquency, if you will, of the black community.
- 4:56You know, and just like to get personal, where we grew up.
- 5:01There were liquor stores smack dab in the middle of the neighborhood.
- 5:05I mean, like within walking distance.
- 5:09We had friends who lived either next door to the liquor store,
- 5:14across the street from the liquor store, down the block from the liquor store.
- 5:20I mean, it was right there smack dab in the middle of the hood.
- 5:24So for those that are listening, imagine wherever you live right now.
- 5:27Imagine your street one block.
- 5:29Take four houses out in the middle of the block and leave that as an empty lot
- 5:33and imagine a liquor store with a parking lot yep sitting in the middle of your block yep,
- 5:40and then we had that we had that and if you went down the street about a mile
- 5:46or so you ran into another liquor store if you went the other direction about
- 5:52a mile you'd run into another liquor store.
- 5:55Or a corner store that sells beer.
- 5:58Correct. And I wish I was making this up, but really I'm not.
- 6:05And we knew a couple of, on Sundays for those that didn't want to drive out,
- 6:10to State Line, there was some people in the neighborhood selling cold beer, bootlegging.
- 6:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and.
- 6:20The main point I think that we want you guys to take from this discussion is,
- 6:24If you live in a predominantly white neighborhood, you have to drive to the liquor store.
- 6:31There is no walking to the liquor store when you live in a white neighborhood.
- 6:36You literally have to get in your vehicle and drive as opposed to being in a
- 6:42black neighborhood where it's just easy access.
- 6:46And think about it like this. If you think that is not an issue.
- 6:50Let's say you got a hankering for some ice cream in the middle of the night.
- 6:55If you got some in the freezer, you're probably going to go eat that ice cream.
- 7:01As opposed to if you got to get in your vehicle and drive to get that ice cream.
- 7:07You're probably going to go.
- 7:07Yeah, I didn't need it anyway. Even if it's only a half mile away.
- 7:10Like now I'm cool. Exactly. And that's the issue is to eat.
- 7:17Excuse me. Let me get a sip of water. Go ahead, my brother. And the crazy thing
- 7:20is, is that studies done at Duke show that white Americans consume way more
- 7:27alcohol than black Americans. Correct.
- 7:31Correct. So for me, when I saw that, I immediately thought to myself,
- 7:34I thought back to when Double Deuces got real popular. Yeah.
- 7:40Think about how many of those, how many people that we knew personally would
- 7:44buy three or four of them a day.
- 7:46It's a constant into the in and out, in and out, in and out.
- 7:51It's designed to keep you coming back. Mm hmm. Without a doubt.
- 7:55Without a doubt. And I'm glad you touched on the fact that the alcohol consumption
- 8:01for black people isn't higher because that's also what someone would probably,
- 8:06look at this and say, well, because they drink more.
- 8:09Absolutely not true. And again, this this is not about alcohol consumption in that way.
- 8:16I mean, because everyone drinks white people, black people, Asians,
- 8:22Hispanics, everyone drinks. So so this is this.
- 8:28What in the world? This is not about alcohol consumption as it relates to a matter of race.
- 8:35This is about the easy access of the alcohol and how it can just lead to domestic violence.
- 8:46Things of that nature, you know, fights, guns, which the easy access to guns is also an issue.
- 8:54So that's that's what what we want to highlight here is I don't want to be a
- 8:59conspiracy theorist and say that this is by design,
- 9:03that this is purposely done to negatively impact the black community.
- 9:10But when you look at all of the factors and the circumstances,
- 9:14I mean, it's just hard to get away from it. So I'm going to add on to that.
- 9:20Historically, richer neighborhoods have used zoning laws to stop these things
- 9:27from happening. Now, the reason my brother just said it's not about race is trust and believe.
- 9:32If somebody gets paid the right amount of money or zoning laws change,
- 9:37they will start popping up everywhere.
- 9:41Now, they might not get utilized as much and go out of business a lot faster, but they will go up.
- 9:49Yeah. And so basically, the number to give a brief stat is like seven to eight
- 9:57more times likely to be put,
- 9:59in a black neighborhood as opposed to a white neighborhood because of the zoning
- 10:05laws, because of redlining, because of disinvestment.
- 10:09Basically, the land is cheap.
- 10:11So put a liver store here. And they're not concerned about property value because
- 10:17the reason they do the zoning laws in the rich communities is to observe this
- 10:21so-called, well, this is a Christian community, so we don't want a bunch of alcohol.
- 10:25It's the same reason zoning laws keep out strip clubs and adult stores and things of that nature.
- 10:32For sure. We don't want this in our community. Correct. Even though we probably
- 10:36consume more of this than anyone else.
- 10:40Correct. Correct. Correct. Right. It is is is almost like gentrification for businesses.
- 10:48Kind of. I mean, you know, come
- 10:50in, get the land cheap, except you don't build it up to push people out.
- 10:55You just build it up to exploit the community. And speaking of exploitation,
- 11:01it is always dumbfounded me that you cash a check at a liquor store.
- 11:13So i work my you know i'll just use what my father worked for almost 40 years light and gas company,
- 11:21this was before direct deposit i'm saying had i've deposited a check for him
- 11:25at the bank before i couldn't imagine with the type of money he was making at
- 11:30that time walking into an l and cash me.
- 11:35That's dumbfounding to me. The first thing I would say now, especially as an
- 11:39adult, what are you doing?
- 11:42You about to walk out with all that money in your hand? No. You know what you're
- 11:45going to do? You're going to spend about $100 of it.
- 11:47Get you a bottle. Get you a couple cases of beer. Get you a couple packs of
- 11:51cigarettes when he smoked a lot.
- 11:54It's designed to exploit. It is. Walk into a rich community, especially here.
- 11:59Carmel, Fisher's, and talking about, yeah, I need to cash should check there
- 12:01laugh your ass up out of there yeah yeah yeah and i mean this is maybe we can
- 12:06something we can get into,
- 12:08with jeremy when we if we ever talk to him about banking and like how they basically
- 12:14discriminated as far as giving people bank accounts savings accounts checking accounts,
- 12:20huh um something else i wanted to touch on with this which is absolutely crazy
- 12:27to me Now, when you talk about all of the information that we've presented thus far.
- 12:34Three to four times more liquor stores in black neighborhoods versus white neighborhoods.
- 12:41The crazy thing is black neighborhoods are now becoming food deserts.
- 12:47So we got liquor stores all over the place.
- 12:52But there's nowhere to actually go and feed yourself, your family, etc.
- 13:00This is nuts to me. I mean, you may have a convenience store that may sell some
- 13:06outdated stuff with like a crazy markup on it, you know, but it's all like sodium rich chips,
- 13:13ramen noodles, you know, nothing that's really good for you.
- 13:17So I just found I find that also shocking that black communities are filled
- 13:24with liquor stores and convenience stores that sell you junk.
- 13:29But yet there's no grocery stores in black communities.
- 13:34So I'm going to take a step away from the black community for one second.
- 13:39So my previous job, as you know, took me all over the place.
- 13:42I was at that job a little bit over five years as a driver, as a manager,
- 13:48as a regional manager, whatever.
- 13:51I watched the local grocery stores and some of those small rural communities
- 13:56out in white neighborhoods combine. I mean, decline year after year after year.
- 14:01The second a Dollar General went into place. Interesting.
- 14:07Every single time. Did you know that there are places like Tulsa,
- 14:13Kansas City and Fort Worth are trying to ban dollar stores?
- 14:17Because people are like grocery shopping at dollar stores? Because it brings
- 14:21down it draws people away from the grocery store.
- 14:25I watched the shelves just go bearer and bearer at some of those rural grocery
- 14:28stores. Two or three of them closed completely.
- 14:32Our orders that we used to take in would go from 50 cases down to 30.
- 14:37Well, they go from two deliveries a week down to one every other week.
- 14:42They have enough items in a Dollar General where you can actually grocery shop?
- 14:46Oh, yeah. Really? Oh, yeah. But it goes to what you just said.
- 14:50It's sodium enriched items. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I'm like, can you get like
- 14:56some ground beef or like some chicken breast at Dollar General? Oh, bro. Really?
- 15:01Shit, 16, 20 feet. There's one on the east side. Well, no, that will close.
- 15:05But there was one on the east side that closed down before I left the previous company.
- 15:09So, man, they had 24 feet of freezer space.
- 15:11Interesting. I've never. Shrimp. Everything. This Dollar General down here,
- 15:17I've never even paid attention, bro. Yep.
- 15:20Shrimp. Ground beef. Hot dogs. The whole shebang. Bread. Everything.
- 15:26But you know what you can't find?
- 15:27Fresh fruit. Mm-mm.
- 15:30I can't go in there and buy. Fresh veggies, fresh fruit. Yeah.
- 15:34So, yeah, that's one of the big issues. That's interesting.
- 15:38And people don't even pay attention to it. They see a new shiny thing pop up
- 15:41in their community and they start shopping there. Next time I'm in there,
- 15:44I'm going to check and see what's in those freezers. You can fill up a whole
- 15:46cart in there. And the only thing that you would have to go somewhere else to get is your meat.
- 15:51You know, fish, chicken, ground beef. But you can buy cereal,
- 15:55canned goods, seasonings, everything your house would need.
- 16:00Except for like, well, no, I take that back. They do have the ground beef and
- 16:05everything. It's in the frozen section.
- 16:08Man, you got me wanting to go down there right now and take a look.
- 16:12That is so interesting, bro. But it's the new shiny thing.
- 16:16Which is contributing to the food deserts. Yep. Wow. Whereas for me,
- 16:20I enjoy going into those old-ass grocery stores and shopping.
- 16:24Every time I saw them or whenever I would deliver to them, I have to visit them.
- 16:27I'd always end up spending money in there.
- 16:30Because a lot of those places had the small, like in the back,
- 16:33like you can buy lunch, mac and cheese, green beans, whatever.
- 16:38You know, Dollar General ain't offering that.
- 16:41That is crazy. Yeah, I'm definitely going to try and remember next time I'm in there.
- 16:50Yeah, that's nuts, bro. Yep, they moved to those areas to specifically target.
- 17:00Those small businesses. Well, it's funny you say that about Dollar General because
- 17:07some liquor stores are also becoming de facto grocery stores as well.
- 17:13Yeah, they are selling, I said, all of the chips and bread and all the other
- 17:19kind of stuff that not healthy for you, but something that at least fill your belly temporarily.
- 17:27So, yeah, that's another thing is that, yeah, it's one stop.
- 17:30You go get a drink and get you some bread and, yeah.
- 17:35Yeah, it's crazy. The state that we live in, I mean, we're children of the 80s.
- 17:43So none of this was around when we were kids.
- 17:47And now it's just like, it's so prevalent. It's just, it's nuts.
- 17:52Even though we didn't, like I said, there were a lot of liquor stores in the
- 17:58neighborhood where we grew up.
- 18:00Because I don't want to call it the hood because it really wasn't the hood when
- 18:02we were kids in the neighborhood that we grew up in.
- 18:05Bro, we got pictures of me when
- 18:07I was like three or four. We had a white picket fence in the backyard.
- 18:10Bro, look, my block was majority white until I was probably 17, 18 years old.
- 18:18It was probably more white people on my block than black people. Yeah.
- 18:22But we had a grocery store. I mean, it wasn't directly in the hood,
- 18:27but everyone knew where Burgers was.
- 18:29Then later became Sterks. You know, that was my father's first job.
- 18:32Straight up. 1967. Straight up. He was a bagger at burgers before he got drafted.
- 18:38That's crazy. And then, of course, I started working there.
- 18:42Yeah. But yeah, yeah, yeah. So so we had that. You know what I'm saying?
- 18:46Yeah. We would have to drive to Highland to go to Altra or something like that or Audi.
- 18:51Worked that, too. Yeah. But but, you know, there was a means burger where it
- 18:57was walking distance. Was it a long walk? Yes.
- 19:00But it was walking distance. But that was back in the time when everybody was always outside.
- 19:05So walking those 13 blocks, you were going to run into cousins, friends, or a ride.
- 19:12You was going to run into somebody. Or you was going to run into somebody that would get your ride.
- 19:15Get your ass to the car. Yeah. The only thing I would think is like,
- 19:19you know, trying to walk all that way with a bag full of groceries would be kind of.
- 19:24But then there was also the bus that ran up and down Calumet,
- 19:28no, Columbia all day, every day. Which y'all did.
- 19:32Yeah, so it's just foreign and.
- 19:36I just I wonder if there is a link between like all of these new cancers that
- 19:43have been popping up all over the over the last, what, 10, 15 years,
- 19:47you know, another cancer for this and cancer for that. And now this cause is cancer.
- 19:51And I wonder if it's related to all of these. I'm getting way off topic here.
- 19:57But if it's related to all of these sodium filled products in these dollar generals
- 20:02and, you know, these liquor stores that's selling just crap to the communities. I wonder.
- 20:07You and I had the sodium conversation, what, last week? Yeah.
- 20:11And like I told you, whenever I do- When we finished recording last week, actually. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:15Because whenever I do, which is very rare, have ramen at home,
- 20:20I don't even use the package anymore. I use a little bit of unsalted butter,
- 20:23a little bit of pepper. That's it.
- 20:26Because, man, at this age, man, my ankles will swell up like crazy. Oh, man.
- 20:31The high blood pressure, all of that. So anything else you want to add to this
- 20:36discussion about black liquor stores or liquor stores in the black community?
- 20:40No, I think we're good on that. All right, cool.
- 20:43We're going to transition right into our current events.
- 20:49You got a current event you want to get into, my brother? I got two.
- 20:52All right, cool. But I'll make them quick.
- 20:53So I want to add more to the comedy of last week in the reflection pool, reflective pool.
- 20:59So I did a little more research because I felt like I thought I knew about one
- 21:04thing that I mentioned. And I'm like, OK, I said that wrong. I didn't know that.
- 21:09So there were cracks in the granite.
- 21:13That helped the water leak out, et cetera, et cetera.
- 21:18When you seal the pool, as you said, there's a reason it was the color it was. Right.
- 21:25When you seal the pool and basically heat it up with the sun and fresh water,
- 21:32not the same water, fresh water, that is what causes the algae.
- 21:38Now, that's not the funny part. so you're telling me,
- 21:43somebody leaned over in the pool for 350 feet like leaned over because that's
- 21:49exactly what you'd have to do or you had to be on the scooter on a skateboard
- 21:52i would i was thinking a wetsuit and you're underwater right,
- 21:57and it's between one and three feet deep.
- 22:00And they took a box cutter for 350 feet and damaged puncture proof material
- 22:08correct it makes no sense but what's funny about that,
- 22:15a week prior he was bragging about how indestructible the material was he was
- 22:22saying you couldn't cut it,
- 22:24so now someone took a box cutter and cut it bro which is it for 300 and then,
- 22:29what piss and i'm really glad people here in indianapolis chimed in on it and
- 22:33i'm gonna check and see if they took it down wthr posted that video that they've
- 22:37been posting that zoom in or that guy like reaching in the water and they're
- 22:41saying he was the guy that cut it,
- 22:44man them comments ripped wthr partners like quit posting this fake ass shit,
- 22:48oh it was an ai generated video no no it's but that's not the reason that the pool is peeling,
- 22:54but they're chiming right into it like, oh,
- 22:58they're putting this out that this is the guy that did it.
- 23:01So they're sharing the video. Man, people ate them up in the damn comments.
- 23:04Well, what was it? Six people who got arrested? I think so.
- 23:08All of them are going to walk. Yeah.
- 23:11You can't tell me that there is video footage of these people actually vandalizing the pool.
- 23:19Or, judging by what fascists have done for hundreds and hundreds of years,
- 23:24those six people probably got $500 in their hand.
- 23:29After being handcuffed and taken somewhere, it probably was sent on home.
- 23:35Interesting. Kind of like the guy from Butler. I mean, we will talk about that
- 23:38another day. Interesting.
- 23:40So, yeah, it's funny. you say fascist because now they have,
- 23:44national guard i believe it is patrolling the area with an automated message
- 23:49playing fascist something that's supposed to be free to the general public you
- 23:55can't now isn't free you can't loiter,
- 23:59it's nuts absolutely fascist bro that you got armed troops patrolling the reflecting pool.
- 24:08But don't call them a fascist. Don't call this regime fascist,
- 24:12but they're doing everything that a fascist would do.
- 24:17But we're going to arrest you for speaking up. Man, kiss my ass.
- 24:21Go ahead, bro. So the second one.
- 24:23What the hell make this dude think somebody want a passport with his damn face
- 24:27on it standing above? Now, you see the original design was just his face.
- 24:31That stupid ass face.
- 24:34Now it's him standing over the resolute desk. Here's the funny part.
- 24:39In that passport book, it says, welcome, be good or something.
- 24:46People use their passport to leave here. Right. You're saying welcome.
- 24:52Welcome home? i guess when you leave you do have to show it to get back in but right,
- 24:59i don't know i don't i don't know bro all i can say is i'm glad mine don't expire
- 25:03for a while but here's the thing i'm gonna throw it out there for everybody
- 25:06that's saying to themselves well i'll wait to get a passport until he's gone,
- 25:09you have to seek these out you can get a regular passport,
- 25:15dude i went on that site immediately and started filling out looking to seek,
- 25:20you'd have to seek out that america first.
- 25:24250 nonsense ass. I couldn't imagine if that shit became universal and I got
- 25:28to walk around for 10 years with that shit in my...
- 25:31Again, fascist. What other president would even think to do something like that?
- 25:39Which is funny because Obama said recently, I didn't have time to think about
- 25:43that stuff because I was actually doing the job.
- 25:47Give it a year. You're going to start seeing people with this picture up in their homes.
- 25:52Oh, Lord. Hanging above the TV, which I'm sure some of them are already doing.
- 25:57Hell, some of them, you know, I ain't going to say that. This is a family show.
- 26:05People got blow up dials comforters man listen real quick i remember doing his
- 26:12first administration i was brushing my teeth turn the electric toothbrush off i was using uh.
- 26:20Floss the tv was on in the background and i heard get your trumpy bear like,
- 26:28what then i just came out the bathroom, turn the corner and look.
- 26:32Did you know during his first administration, there was a bear, a teddy bear.
- 26:37He wore a Make America Great Again hat. He had like a suit jacket on and it
- 26:41was called the Trumpy Bear.
- 26:43Never heard of it. $30. Interesting.
- 26:46Dude, they had dudes on motorcycles with it strapped to the back,
- 26:50the average everyday housewife or, you know, the kids hugging it.
- 26:54Trumpy Bear. Wow.
- 26:57Went right by me. Never even seen it, bro. Had no idea. Had I never seen that
- 27:03commercial, I would have never heard about it.
- 27:05But again, also part of the grift. Oh.
- 27:09Part of the grift. The guy is nothing but a grifter. Lifelong. Yes, sir.
- 27:14Were you finished with that, bro? Yep. All right, cool. For my current event,
- 27:18I'm going to talk about the primary results in New York and Maryland that happened earlier this week.
- 27:27And I'm going to bounce around, but it's all going to make sense.
- 27:32The first thing I want to talk about is the low voter turnout.
- 27:38Listen to me. The only way guys like Trump win is because we don't participate.
- 27:48We have to participate, y'all.
- 27:51The only reason why they're trying to make it harder to vote is because they
- 27:56realize if everyone votes, they lose.
- 28:02Their policies are crazy unpopular. All right.
- 28:07Yes, it seems like there's a lot of MAGA. Really, there isn't.
- 28:11They're a small majority. They're just loud.
- 28:15And they get all of the attention because the squeaky wheel gets to grease. That's it.
- 28:23It's a small portion, a small faction of these guys.
- 28:28But when we don't vote, we make it easy for these guys to,
- 28:36retain power or slide in and remove someone from office who probably wouldn't be as bad as these guys.
- 28:45So to talk about the mom, Donnie three, that one in New York,
- 28:51I'm seeing a lot of who cares what the Republicans think.
- 28:55I'm seeing a lot of Democrats like this is horrible for the Democrat Party.
- 29:02What is a Democratic socialist? This is bad for the brand. Shut the hell up. Shut up.
- 29:11This is what people want. Quit trying to be Republican light,
- 29:17because that's what a lot of you Democrats sound like. You're Republican light.
- 29:23People want radical change. They want somebody who's going to say we're putting
- 29:31all of them in jail if we get the opportunity because they deserve to be there.
- 29:37I don't want to hear anything about weaponizing government when this guy has
- 29:41done nothing but weaponize government in his second term.
- 29:45I don't want to hear it. I don't be afraid to say the thing.
- 29:50OK, say you're going after these guys. Say it.
- 29:55Say it. Stand up on it. Say that you want Supreme Court justice reform or Supreme Court reform.
- 30:04Say it because we need it. This Supreme Court is corrupt. Say the thing.
- 30:10Say you're going to hold people accountable. Say you want to tax the billionaire class. Say it.
- 30:16Say it all. Quit running from your shadows. Quit. Listen, listen, listen, listen.
- 30:24You're never going to convince those hardcore Republicans to vote Democrat.
- 30:30You're not. Forget about them.
- 30:33Quit trying to cater to them. Stop worrying about being too radical.
- 30:38You can't be more radical than Trump. He says the most idiotic shit and everyone
- 30:43tries to make sense of it for knowing that is bullshit.
- 30:47And then they try and make sense of it. Stop being afraid to say the thing. Say it.
- 30:54Everything that you think is radical is actually what the people want.
- 30:59And if not, the three Mondani candidates would not have been elected this week.
- 31:07Say the damn thing. Stop being scared. All right.
- 31:11This is why people stay home and you don't energize your base.
- 31:16Because too many of you are tiptoeing around the real issues,
- 31:21talk about it this is what people want stand up on it stand 10 toes down stop
- 31:27being little girls stop trying to be a what's the word i'm looking for stop stop stop trying to uh,
- 31:35use that same decorum argument that's out the window Trump.
- 31:40Done punted all of that stuff to the moon.
- 31:43Forget about the quorum. Say the thing, y'all. All right. I know I got kind
- 31:47of emotional there, but I'm just.
- 31:50Sick of it. I'm going to add one thing to it. And this is based on the true
- 31:54social post he made overnight. Well, somebody made because he didn't write that shit.
- 31:58Socialism is not communism. At all.
- 32:03So for those that were raised to believe it was, like you and I, it is not.
- 32:10There are two different things. And here we are again in 2026.
- 32:15People are saying they're electing communists.
- 32:18What happened in the 40s and 50s? Same thing. When George Wallace running his
- 32:23mouth. They started labeling people communists. They were arresting politicians.
- 32:27People lost their livelihoods being labeled a communist.
- 32:31That part, the labels. And here he is again.
- 32:36There's another label that gets stamped a lot around the world this time that
- 32:41can ruin somebody's life. And I put that in the same category.
- 32:45Labeling somebody anti-something when they're not. It's the same fucking thing.
- 32:50The labels. We can't be afraid of the labels. And too many Democrats are afraid of the labels.
- 32:55Listen, I'm going to do a little.
- 33:02I did a video about this on my YouTube page. Communism isn't bad.
- 33:08I think it's the title of it.
- 33:09It is. I break down the difference between communism, socialism and Marxism.
- 33:17Go and check out that video and you will get a better understanding.
- 33:22But here's something also.
- 33:25We already have a partial socialistic economy. Always have.
- 33:31Always have. Always, bro. Social security, free public schools.
- 33:37That's all socialism. OK, we already have it. Medicare, Medicaid.
- 33:44Those are all socialist programs.
- 33:48We're already living it.
- 33:51So, again, Democrats, don't be afraid of the labels. Stand up on it.
- 33:56Stand up on it. This is what people want. We're going to tax the billionaires.
- 34:00We're going to put the money to good use.
- 34:03And if you listen to people say they pay the most taxes. OK,
- 34:07yeah, monetarily they do.
- 34:10But it's because they have more. But when you get down to the percentages,
- 34:15that's different. The middle class pays more as far as a percentage than the super wealthy.
- 34:23And that's why you hear Democrats talking about raising taxes.
- 34:28No Democrat has ever said they want to raise taxes on the middle class.
- 34:33Whenever you hear these guys talk about increasing taxes, it's always for the billionaire class.
- 34:39And trust me, the whole this is going to trickle down to you. No, it's not.
- 34:43No. If it does, then you know exactly where that billionaire stands.
- 34:49No, it's not something else I want to talk about real quick.
- 34:52But gosh, I'm all over the place today.
- 34:54This went under the radar maybe a month ago, two months ago,
- 34:59when the Supreme Court ruled that Trump's tariffs were illegal. Mm hmm.
- 35:05Got the refund from that? I don't know if they've ever said it publicly,
- 35:11but you know the corporations got the refund yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 35:14yeah, yeah, the consumers did not get the refunds from Trump's illegal tariffs.
- 35:20The corporations got refunded their money from the tariffs after they already
- 35:26collected it from us after they've already collected it from us because the
- 35:29majority of them did nothing but pass that tax on to the consumer.
- 35:34So again And we pay and the billionaires got richer.
- 35:40I'm just saying they need to pay more in taxes.
- 35:44That's all I got on that, bro. My bad. No, it's all good.
- 35:51That's it? Yeah. Oh, OK. I thought maybe you wanted to add something to that.
- 35:56All right. All right. Cool. All right, y'all. Now that I'm done venting and
- 36:00hyperventilating, I probably should move into or rant or rant about a random
- 36:07topic, my favorite subject. My brother, you got to rant. Mm-hmm.
- 36:11All right. Well, I'm going to let you go. I need to calm down because I'm probably
- 36:14going to get emotional again when I do my rant.
- 36:17So I had two things I wanted to rant about.
- 36:22Made no sense. The other one did. But something came up a couple hours ago and
- 36:27I was like, that's what I'm going to talk about.
- 36:30So I want to talk about parenting.
- 36:34You've been doing this right at 30 years. Me about about 28 and a half years.
- 36:42I'm a divorced man. You are not.
- 36:46I have never, and when I say never, I have never put anyone or anything above my children ever.
- 36:59And there is not a person in my circle.
- 37:02There's not a person who knows me that can say, oh yeah, there were times when
- 37:07this happened and that happened. Never happened.
- 37:11If my children were with my ex-wife and I had a date, I'm about to get into
- 37:16something for the evening,
- 37:18and something changed guess what i'm not getting in anything that's over with
- 37:23correct it's done i don't want to hear that bullshit i need to live my life,
- 37:29i need to do this we shouldn't have had children.
- 37:32And don't give me that it's your turn it's my turn nonsense i'm going to use
- 37:38an example kids were with the ex-wife all week matter of fact Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 37:45half of Sunday. Summertime.
- 37:49This is a pass? Pass. Okay. Kids get dropped off. I think I was in the backyard cutting the grass.
- 37:56She came around, turned off the lawnmower. Hey, I completely forgot.
- 38:02I'm going to come back and get.
- 38:05Take her to a birthday party tomorrow. I forgot about it.
- 38:09Did I say, you done had the kids for four days. It's my time.
- 38:14What time do you want her to be ready? Correct.
- 38:17What time do you want her to be ready? Yeah. Because I'm trying not to cuss.
- 38:22So I'm going to be a punk and say you can't have that extra three or four hours
- 38:28with her to take her to her friend's birthday party,
- 38:32because I want to have her with me When, let's be real, she's probably going to be in her room,
- 38:39or across the street playing with a friend.
- 38:42I'm not even going to be spending that time with her. Most of the time it's
- 38:45about just punishing the other. It's about punishing the other person.
- 38:47Correct. And I'm going to say one last thing.
- 38:51No money being given from either side is an invitation to keep that parent from
- 38:57seeing that child. Tell that to the courts.
- 39:01No, no, no. I'm saying when the court does not designate. Because look,
- 39:05man, listen, when we went in that court, we had our divorce. We wrote our own decree.
- 39:10We got it notarized together.
- 39:13And we told my exact words, your honor, no disrespect to your court.
- 39:18But no state law is going to tell either one of us when we can and can't see
- 39:22our children. Those were my exact words to the judge.
- 39:25And the judge smiled and said, I can appreciate and respect that.
- 39:29Just understand that if this this paper, if either of you start to violate this
- 39:34paper, we're going to have to step in to make sure that those children are OK. Yeah.
- 39:40Also respect, respected.
- 39:43But the whole thing was brought up. Stop. The my turn parents pissed me off. I hear you.
- 39:49Do your damn job. You both had the children. Do your damn job. I hear you.
- 39:53I hear you. the unrelated but kind of related.
- 39:58I've never understood the whole I'm going to take you to jail for not paying child support thing.
- 40:03I never that never made sense to me because if I'm in jail, then I'm really
- 40:08not paying child support.
- 40:10One, I think you're kind of a punk ass.
- 40:14If you have to get arrested to make you pay child support, I think you're kind
- 40:18of a punk ass because like you said, it's just something that you should do.
- 40:21But second, I don't get how arresting someone is going to help them make child support payments.
- 40:30Those things seem contrary to me. And at the end of the day,
- 40:34a lot of this stuff happens with the parents. And look, it doesn't just happen
- 40:37to men. It happens to women as well, depending on where you are and depending on the situation.
- 40:41Half of the time, those children are like two and three years old.
- 40:44They don't know what type of money is being exchanged. All they give a damn
- 40:47about is mommy me a daddy. I just want to be with mom and dad. Right. Right.
- 40:52No, I get it. I get it. You finished with that, bro?
- 40:56Yeah. Yeah. So for my right...
- 41:00I want to talk about Cohen Wiley. I'm going to try and contain myself.
- 41:08For those who don't know. Oh, Lord, have mercy. This was two weeks ago,
- 41:13if I'm not mistaken, or getting close to two weeks.
- 41:17A woman allegedly, I want to emphasize, allegedly.
- 41:24Was stealing some pampers for her one year old son in Mississippi,
- 41:31Sanitobia, Mississippi, to be to be exact.
- 41:35Why do I say allegedly? Because Walmart did not accuse her of stealing.
- 41:43Someone else did.
- 41:46Walmart didn't detain her. Walmart security didn't take her in the back room and call the police.
- 41:53Someone else called the police on this woman and accused her of stealing diapers.
- 42:03As messed up as that sounds in itself, when the police arrived on the scene, multiple police,
- 42:13they started shooting at the vehicle containing the woman and her one-year-old son.
- 42:22They shot and killed a one-year-old child.
- 42:30Let that sink in. A one-year-old child, a baby, was killed.
- 42:40Whether the mom was stealing the Pampers or not is pretty irrelevant at this point.
- 42:47A one-year-old baby was killed, struck down by gunfire by a fucking police.
- 42:56Make that make sense in any universe. I don't care what side of the aisle you stand on. A kid.
- 43:05I'm sorry, y'all. No one. No one.
- 43:11No one operates with immunity or impunity. It makes no sense.
- 43:19He should be taken to jail immediately. At the scene. Give me your gun.
- 43:24Put on these fucking handcuffs. You're going to jail.
- 43:28No gun was found in the car. They try and claim that the woman was driving towards them.
- 43:34Yet you have no injuries. You didn't get struck. You can get out the fucking way.
- 43:40They killed a baby, y'all. There is no justification for that. None.
- 43:47None. I don't care who you are. I don't care what side of the aisle you're on.
- 43:51I don't care if you're black, white, orange, green, Republican,
- 43:54Democrat. There's no justification for killing a fucking baby.
- 44:00We need to change. We need to change, y'all.
- 44:04If this doesn't touch your heart, then you are just a heartless son of a bitch.
- 44:10Heaven help us all. That's my work.
- 44:14All right y'all we're going to move into our five on the black hand side movie
- 44:19review and the movie we chose this week is sort of a sequel,
- 44:25to the movie we did last week Uptown Saturday Night this movie came out the
- 44:30following year called Let's Do It Again and again this is a Bill Cosby,
- 44:36Sidney Poitier movie there are some recognizable faces from Uptown Saturday Night.
- 44:42Zenobia is actually who's Lee Chamberlain.
- 44:46That's her real name. She's actually Sidney Poitier's wife in this movie.
- 44:52Calvin Lockhart, who was Silky Slim in Uptown Saturday Night,
- 44:56is actually Biggie Smalls in this movie.
- 45:00Were there any other carryovers, bro?
- 45:03Not that I can think of. Okay, cool. This is 1975. Yeah.
- 45:11We got James Amos in this movie. John Amos. John Amos. I'm sorry.
- 45:17I'm thinking of good times.
- 45:20Which is what most people will recognize him from as being James Evans on good
- 45:23times. We got Jimmy Walker in this movie.
- 45:28For those who are fans of the chronic, the $20 sack pyramid skit.
- 45:33Remember Snoop's name was Bootney Lee Farnsworth. That's correct.
- 45:37Absolutely. Also, wasn't one of Puff, that assistant guy that was working for
- 45:43Puff, wasn't his name like Farnsworth Bickley? Farnsworth Bickley.
- 45:47Okay, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 45:51Gosh, now my mind just went blank. You got the great mate Ozzie Davis in this movie. Yep.
- 45:58George Foreman. George Foreman, a great cameo. That scene was just great.
- 46:04Bill Cosby like, oh yeah, I'm about to fight. Let me just tell you something.
- 46:07I love you. And a hugged him.
- 46:10And a quick cameo. Hold on. By the incomparable Jane Kennedy. Yes, sir.
- 46:21And they knew it we knew it and everyone watching knew it it's funny because
- 46:26i haven't i haven't seen this movie in yeah forever yeah so re-watching it today,
- 46:32when i saw her i was like oh i forgot she was in there yes yes yeah yes yeah
- 46:38just just beauty personified,
- 46:41that growing up she was,
- 46:44her and Pam Greer,
- 46:48were it.
- 46:49Well, she broke the glass ceiling, basically becoming like the first black sports
- 46:54recorder. Yeah, sports, yeah. Sideline reporter, I guess is what I'm trying
- 46:57to say on CBS, right? Yep, yep, yes, sir.
- 47:00Yeah, freaking Jane Kennedy. Oh, my brother, go ahead, take it away.
- 47:03So, well, shoot, we kind of did.
- 47:08It's all good. So, here's the premise. Clyde Williams with the Sidney Poitier.
- 47:13Now, keep in mind, too, although this is a sequel, Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby
- 47:18play two different characters, two, like, just completely different.
- 47:23Sidney Poitier played a milkman. Bill Cosby was a forklift operator.
- 47:28They belong to a fraternal lodge called the Brothers and Sisters of Chaka,
- 47:32which is the way they pronounced it. Right. Which is basically...
- 47:37Shriners. Okay. They belong to a...
- 47:40They desperately need $50,000 to save the community building and retirement home for foreclosure.
- 47:46To raise the money, Billy convinces Clyde to travel to New Orleans and use Clyde's
- 47:49secret gift of hypnotism.
- 47:53They find a scrawny, hyperactive underdog boxer named Bootney Farnsworth,
- 47:57which we forgot to mention, J.J. Walker.
- 48:00Is J.J. Walker. Yes, sir. They hypnotize him into thinking he's unstoppable
- 48:04and an aggressive champion.
- 48:06They place a massive bet on him, win the money, head home.
- 48:09The chaos starts when two rival underground mafia bosses realize they've been
- 48:14conned and forced Clyde and Billy to do it again.
- 48:17Hence the name of the movie. Correct. So this movie had a budget of $11.8 million.
- 48:26And it made $25 million plus at the box office. Doubled his money.
- 48:30That's a success. In 1975. Yeah, yeah. That is 100% a success.
- 48:35One of the funny things that I've completely forgot, the extended version of
- 48:40the Staples Singers track, Let's Do It Again, has a lot of sexual noises in it. Really? Oh, yeah.
- 48:47I didn't know that. Go back and watch the beginning and the end of that movie again.
- 48:51Well, the Staples Singers actually did the entire soundtrack.
- 48:54Yeah, they did the entire soundtrack. Yeah, yeah, yeah, for this movie.
- 48:58Yeah, and it actually starts out, you'd recognize, because so many rappers have
- 49:02used that sample, that you'd recognize.
- 49:09But yeah, so, oh man, I enjoyed watching this movie so much.
- 49:17And like, these used to be like late night Saturday movies on ABC.
- 49:23So you would only see them like every once in a while.
- 49:26So to just hats off to technology that we can watch this now whenever we want to.
- 49:34Yeah, man, I just I just really enjoyed this movie again.
- 49:38A few sexual references, but not really cute or crude humor.
- 49:45Not a lot of foul language.
- 49:48There was some, but not a lot. Yeah, not yet. Not much at all. Yeah.
- 49:51Not a lot of violence, even though there were innuendos, a lot of threats,
- 49:57but no real violence. Funny ass threats. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:02Just one of those good, wholesome movies that you can watch as a family and enjoy.
- 50:12Question. Have you ever been hypnotized? No. Do you think you would be susceptible to hypnotism?
- 50:21No. Me neither. No. Even though I enjoy the whole premise of the movie and everything,
- 50:27I'm like, I don't think that would work. And I don't think it would work on me.
- 50:32I think I think I'm too strong willed. And they say you have to be like highly
- 50:36suggestive in order for it to work. And I think the natural skeptic in me would
- 50:42always be like, get out of here.
- 50:45Let's talk about these ridiculous ass disguises. OK.
- 50:49So for one. Sidney's wasn't that bad. Man, Sidney looked like a pimp from Detroit,
- 50:55in the 70s. But he was supposed to be a gangster. Yeah, yeah. But he had the cape.
- 50:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. Remember when they sat down at the fight and they'd hit that
- 51:03lady's head? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:06Bill Cosby had on basically a capri outfit. He looked like a fancy baseball player.
- 51:13He had on capris. And when he walked up to the table, here's the funny part.
- 51:17He reached in his pocket and pulled out a snub nose. Looked like a snub nose 38. 38, yeah. Chrome 38.
- 51:24Pulled it out of his pocket. Yeah. Put it in his waistband. It fell.
- 51:29Uh-huh. Now, keep in mind, he talking tough.
- 51:32To gangsters. To gangsters. Yeah. And the whole time, now he unzipping his shorts. Right.
- 51:39Pulling the gun through the zipper. Right.
- 51:42The whole time, he has on shades like- Some breakdancing looking glasses.
- 51:48From what? Reading Rainbow.
- 51:50Oh, LeVar Burton. Like LeVar Burton in Star Trek. In Star Trek.
- 51:54Yeah. Same type, except smaller. Yeah.
- 51:57He's got a beard, a mustache that's thick as hell. Correct. And his hat is just
- 52:01sitting on his head. Correct. And I mentioned that his outfit was candy apple red. Correct.
- 52:06Was it like red, red and yellow ensemble? Yeah. Something like that? Yeah.
- 52:13Don't be about the silk black socks pulled up to his calves.
- 52:21But you know what's funny is although I haven't seen this movie in forever,
- 52:25I've seen clips of that scene just in my algorithm.
- 52:30So as soon as it switched and I saw John Amos sitting there eating,
- 52:34getting off the phone, I said, oh, Bill Cosby about to turn the corner.
- 52:38About to turn the corner with that stupid-ass red suit on and trying and trying
- 52:43to pimp hard oh man just comedic genius from bill cosby actually to be able
- 52:51to play that role and like you were saying before we started recording,
- 52:54i wonder how many takes did they have to do for those guys to not just laugh
- 52:59hysterically at all of his antics it it it really is just good clean wholesome
- 53:05fun and you can appreciate,
- 53:08the comedic genius of a bill cosby Yeah.
- 53:11In something like forget all the stuff that he's done later on in his life.
- 53:15But just in these films, you can appreciate the comedic genius of Bill Cosby,
- 53:22just in his movements, his antics, you know, just some of the phrases that he's using.
- 53:29I laughed hysterically when they were trying to hypnotize or was it dehypnotize or hypnotize Boothman?
- 53:37Well, somebody was running and couldn't catch. Yeah, and they had to bring him to the hotel room.
- 53:41Yeah, yeah, that was him. They were trying to de-hypnotize. And then they were,
- 53:44we just wrote the chapel song.
- 53:47Oh. Oh, my gosh, that was hilarious, man. Dude, Bill Cosby singing voice.
- 53:52Terrible. It's terrible.
- 53:56But you see...
- 53:59You start to see in that movie the things that he carried into the Cosby show.
- 54:03I would like to talk to you. That type of stuff. Right, right.
- 54:07The pitch of his voice going up and down. Absolutely. Yeah. And just,
- 54:12you know, laying behind that couch.
- 54:15One of the things I didn't understand. Why did the man and the woman decide
- 54:19to reach behind the couch? What y'all looking for?
- 54:22Why didn't the woman immediately panic when she felt his face in beer?
- 54:28She was just like, oh, whatever. Somebody behind the couch. Right, right, right.
- 54:33That was so weird to me. I'm like, OK, so so she's just going to keep going.
- 54:37I'm used to having people laying behind my couch. Right, right. Weird.
- 54:42I did love his interaction with George Foreman, man. That was that was so funny,
- 54:47man. He took off all this stuff like we can go do it right now. Chump.
- 54:53Improvise, by the way. The whole thing. Improvise. Wow.
- 54:59And George Foreman kept his face. But you had to think to yourself,
- 55:03this is improvised. When Bill Cosby walked up on him and was like,
- 55:06well, hold on. Before we start, I just want to tell you one thing.
- 55:07Now, keep in mind, y'all, both of them are shirtless at this point.
- 55:11They brought the box. Right.
- 55:12And Bill Cosby hugs him, kisses him on the cheek, and tells him he loves him. Yeah, I love you, man.
- 55:18Because they were teasing him about him crashing. Oh, yeah, looking at Jane
- 55:22Kennedy. For looking at Jane Kennedy, yeah. Yeah.
- 55:25And what the hell was she wearing to work? I don't know but.
- 55:31And for those who wonder it the name Biggie Smalls this is where it comes from
- 55:36yeah I kept saying it came from,
- 55:39uptown Saturday night last week but yeah it comes from this movie yeah yeah
- 55:43but this is where the notorious B.I.G,
- 55:47and several other lesser known rappers have taken that moniker of Biggie Smalls
- 55:52right right right absolutely correct,
- 55:56Trying to think, what were some other great scenes in there?
- 55:59I love when they were chasing them. Oh, hold up. I skipped right over this little nugget.
- 56:05You mentioned Farnsworth Bentley. He did take his name directly from that. Yeah.
- 56:10I wasn't aware that that was the inspiration from it. Yeah, yeah,
- 56:14yeah. Yeah, yeah. Puffy's homeboy. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:17Without a doubt. Yeah, I didn't realize that. Yeah, okay.
- 56:20I love when they were chasing them. And my man Scatter from Superfly. Moses. No, Julius.
- 56:29What's his real name? I'm sorry. I just saw his name. Julius Harris.
- 56:33Yep. Who was scattered on Superfly. Bubble Top.
- 56:36Yeah. I love when they were chasing him through those people's house and he
- 56:41tried to reach back and observe that fool.
- 56:45The funny part about that scene was Bill Cosby and them run through the house.
- 56:50They don't say anything. They don't say nothing. Them fools come in and everybody
- 56:53pointed at the window. Yeah, they went out the window. Yeah,
- 56:55he reached back and try to grab that food off that plate. She smacked the shit. Get back, Jack.
- 57:04Was a great scene. I love that. I love humanizing the gangsters to the point
- 57:09where he's like, man, I'm about to give you something to eat.
- 57:13Yeah, let me grab this cornbread real quick. Yeah, I love that part.
- 57:18I also love when he's talking smack to him when the police is standing there.
- 57:23Oh, with the donations? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's telling them,
- 57:27yeah, if y'all don't cooperate and just smile, I'm gonna start singing like the Temptations.
- 57:31And then he talking mess to him and he's like, sausage nose.
- 57:36John Amos with them two gold teeth. But hey, to their credit.
- 57:42They gave the money back.
- 57:43They gave the money back. They only kept what? The $10,000 that they for the,
- 57:49women's for the police fund. The police fund, correct.
- 57:54Correct. And then $5,000 each they were taken back to Atlanta.
- 57:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. So to their credit, yeah, they did some devious stuff.
- 58:02Yeah, they gambled, which we We neglected to mention. Yeah. They did gamble.
- 58:07Hustled. The Lodge. Yeah. Hustled the Lodge's money.
- 58:11And won enough money to build a new center for the Lodge. Correct.
- 58:15They didn't pocket any of it. Any money.
- 58:18Well, Sidney Poitier did get a new Cadillac.
- 58:22One of them got a new Cadillac. That was a new car. Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:25No, Bill Cosby because he sold it. Okay.
- 58:27There you go. Because he sold it for two grand. That's right.
- 58:29So they could take 18,000. That's right.
- 58:31And add the two and make it 20. Yeah. Yep, yep. Reminded me of my daddy Cadillac
- 58:35back when we were kids. His was just yellow.
- 58:38It was just as long, just as big. I'm like, wow, same skirts.
- 58:43My daddy used to take off and make us wash with the SOS pad.
- 58:47Yes, sir. Wasn't no bleach white back then. No. You had to scrub them white
- 58:51walls with that S pad, and you put them skirts back on there.
- 58:55Oh, I used to hate that so much. This is going to sound completely off topic,
- 58:59but it's not because you just mentioned skirts and tires.
- 59:02So I went and got new tires on the truck yesterday. They faced the white lettering out there.
- 59:08I drive in a sports truck. Yeah. And I didn't even pick because it was raining yesterday.
- 59:14So I just jumped in a truck. Yeah. This morning when I got up,
- 59:17grabbed some water, looked out the window, was like, damn, they faced a white
- 59:22lettering out. At least it ain't like a luxury vehicle.
- 59:26I hate when they do it to a luxury vehicle or I hate to see a sports car with
- 59:30the white walls. Oh, yeah.
- 59:33What are you doing? yeah if it's a sports car yeah the white lettering is it
- 59:38looks good when you roll it down yeah yeah yeah.
- 59:43Anything else you want to talk about this movie bro other other than the fact
- 59:46that people should just go give it a watch i got one more thing for a little
- 59:50known 90s rap fact camp low,
- 59:54their first two albums were named uptown saturday night and let's do it again straight up,
- 1:00:00that's pretty uh interesting i did i did i didn't catch that neither did i and
- 1:00:04i've listened to both of those albums a bunch of times oh wow okay okay never
- 1:00:08even paid attention cool cool so you want to you want to go ahead and rate this thing man yeah
- 1:00:13it's a classic it is i'm sorry,
- 1:00:15it is a classic like i was saying earlier just good clean wholesome family fun,
- 1:00:23it's it you You can watch this movie repeatedly and the jokes just remain funny.
- 1:00:31It's just a really enjoyable movie to watch.
- 1:00:35Like I said, I was watching this and I was saying to myself,
- 1:00:40I really am enjoying this movie, even though I've seen it probably 20 times. You know.
- 1:00:47You mentioned with the language. Personally, other than when they were sitting
- 1:00:52at the restaurant and it's no beer.
- 1:00:55Mm-hmm. I was like, what are y'all doing? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:59Keep your voice down. Bill Cosby and his wife were saying some crazy stuff.
- 1:01:02Denise Nichols, which we didn't mention earlier. Sorry. Shout out to Denise Nichols.
- 1:01:07Other than that, John Amos used the word that, you know, twice.
- 1:01:11College. Yeah, he was talking about his college homies. Yeah.
- 1:01:14But he only used the word twice in like a 20 second span. And that's it.
- 1:01:19I don't remember any other cursing. No, no, no, no.
- 1:01:24And you know what's crazy is he would probably get canceled today.
- 1:01:28For saying that. For saying that.
- 1:01:30Even though the context of it. Isn't. And the reason he was saying. Yes, yes, yes. It isn't.
- 1:01:38Whatever. I try and stay away from that because I don't want to be the type
- 1:01:42of person to tell people what they should or shouldn't be upset about but with that being said,
- 1:01:51times are different yeah i'll just i'll just leave it at that all right yeah
- 1:01:55so uptown saturday night classic let's do it again classic yes sir piece of
- 1:02:02the action i don't want to review.
- 1:02:08It's boring, bro. So what's funny with that is I've seen it.
- 1:02:14But I can't tell you, I don't remember anything about it. Exactly.
- 1:02:18Yeah, I don't remember anything about that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:21Two out of three ain't bad.
- 1:02:23That's a pretty good percent. But yeah, I don't want to review piece of the
- 1:02:29action. I don't want to rewatch it.
- 1:02:31I say, as I recollect, I think it was just pretty boring. Mm hmm.
- 1:02:37So no, no to piece of the action. But yes, Uptown Saturday night.
- 1:02:43Let's do it again. Classics. Go give them a watch.
- 1:02:47You will enjoy them. As I was saying last week, just re-release these today.
- 1:02:53Digitize them. Make them HD.
- 1:02:57Re-release them today. And I
- 1:02:59think these movies will make over a hundred million dollars. Both of them.
- 1:03:03If they really don't change a thing except upgrading the picture quality but
- 1:03:08just throw them yeah throw them on netflix yeah make them available for people
- 1:03:12to just go watch yeah yeah yeah people are going to one people are age and older,
- 1:03:19oh man for the nostalgia,
- 1:03:21but then for a younger audience to go oh wow this is really cool and to let
- 1:03:27them see that they didn't start this gangster shit.
- 1:03:31I can imagine my pops, who only seems to watch sports and news nowadays,
- 1:03:35would be like, oh yeah, I watched it. I ain't seen this movie.
- 1:03:39My pops wasn't known for...
- 1:03:42The more I think about it, all he did was watch sports when we were coming up.
- 1:03:47Now that I'm sitting there thinking about it, I'm like, I've never heard my
- 1:03:50pops be like, let me go on and watch this movie real quick. Which is completely
- 1:03:54opposite from my pops because he never watched sports. Ever.
- 1:04:00Ever bro, look.
- 1:04:04My pops was just anti-television period if we were watching cartoons he'd be
- 1:04:08like that's silly turn it off,
- 1:04:10if we were watching sports he when when when when the bulls were in their dynasty
- 1:04:15he wouldn't know because who who didn't watch the bulls oh man we was all on
- 1:04:18it but yeah he would watch the bulls when they were in uh their dynasty always
- 1:04:22talked about how cool phil jackson was to be a white man
- 1:04:25all that kind of stuff but other than that my my pops was not a sports guy he
- 1:04:29was Now, the television guy, the news,
- 1:04:31the news, or he's watching something like Reverend Clay Evans.
- 1:04:34And I know you know who I'm talking about. Absolutely. I know.
- 1:04:40Man.
- 1:04:43That's what he would sit there and watch is something like Reverend Clay Evans,
- 1:04:47bro. Listen, we could have a whole series on me going to my grandmother's house
- 1:04:53and having to sit there on that couch with the plastic on it,
- 1:04:55watch a Saturday night scene.
- 1:04:57Bro, all of that.
- 1:05:00And my grandmother, she was up. She wasn't going to sleep.
- 1:05:03She watched it. So I'm like, man, as soon as she go in the room,
- 1:05:07I could watch Saturday Night Live.
- 1:05:09No, sir. No, sir. Which is when you mentioned the awakenings the other week.
- 1:05:14I'm just like, all of that. That was Saturday night. You sit there and watch Clay Evans.
- 1:05:18You sit there and watch Saturday Night Sing. And then you would watch The Awakenings.
- 1:05:23And then on Sunday, you got your butt up and watched whatever was on that was related to what was it?
- 1:05:30Was it Bobby Jones? Yes, sir. Gospel hour. Yes, sir. The Bobby Jones gospel hour. Yes, sir.
- 1:05:36It was definitely. I don't want to say beat into us, but it was there.
- 1:05:41It was there. Yeah, it was there.
- 1:05:44Anyway, y'all, that's our review for five on the black hand side. Let's do it again.
- 1:05:50Again, classic status. go check it out you will enjoy it with that being said
- 1:05:56we're going to transition right into our closing monologue my brother the floor
- 1:06:00is yours appreciate it so.
- 1:06:04People, when they hear a siren, what do you think of? Emergency. Emergency.
- 1:06:09Maybe a tornado rolling through down the street. But if you look back into the
- 1:06:13history of where we live, that sound meant something else entirely.
- 1:06:18I've lived in Beach Grove now about seven years.
- 1:06:22It's quiet. It's home. But like a lot of towns across Indiana,
- 1:06:25it carries a shadow that standard history books like to skip over.
- 1:06:29Just a few generations ago, right around 8.50 p.m., just a few minutes before
- 1:06:349, the town siren would start.
- 1:06:37It would echo across porches, roads, and the city itself.
- 1:06:42To the people who lived there, it just meant it was time to lock the doors and settle in.
- 1:06:47But to a worker who didn't look like everyone else, that sound was a countdown.
- 1:06:51When that whistle blew, the message was clear. Your labor was welcomed by day,
- 1:06:56but your presence after dark was a crime.
- 1:06:59People think that this kind of history just vanishes when you change the law, but patterns stick.
- 1:07:04At the turn of the century, which was 2000, Beach Grove was still 96% white.
- 1:07:12Even today, in the latest census data, it's 84%. Black people make up about 7% of the population.
- 1:07:21The signs at the border are gone. The old unwritten rules aren't talked about
- 1:07:25as much. But when you look at the numbers, you realize that the passage just doesn't disappear.
- 1:07:30It does leave a footprint.
- 1:07:32If you listen closely to the quiet of a small town right before nine o'clock,
- 1:07:37you can still hear the weight of that silence.
- 1:07:41Make it plain. My man is talking about sundown towns.
- 1:07:46Yeah. It's just a harsh reality that we have to face. Where I live currently,
- 1:07:52even though I am a light-skinned black man, I would have not been welcome just 40 or 50 years ago.
- 1:08:01Sharky, not 80 years ago. I'm 50. Right.
- 1:08:06In the 70s and 80s, I probably would have been pulled over walking down the streets in Beach Road.
- 1:08:11You go down Main Street. Yes, y'all, it's called Main Street. In Beach Road.
- 1:08:15And you look around left and right and you think to yourself,
- 1:08:18wow, this place is stuck in the 60s.
- 1:08:21That's interesting, bro.
- 1:08:23I had no idea that they were an actual sundown. Yeah.
- 1:08:27And here's the crazy part. At my previous job, which I mentioned,
- 1:08:31all but two towns in Indiana I've been in hundreds of times.
- 1:08:37Eaten there, no people there currently that I met and have stayed in touch with
- 1:08:43from the previous job, business owners. Yeah.
- 1:08:47Wow. Two of those are notorious sundown to Elwood and Martinsville, which is funny.
- 1:08:54We were talking about Martinsville having a June team celebration last week,
- 1:08:59which shocked the hell out of me. Great turnout to this video of great turnout.
- 1:09:04I was like black folks, white folks. Great turnout. I told my wife,
- 1:09:07I said, what the hell am I looking at right now? I said, this must be a typo.
- 1:09:12Martinsville is not having a Juneteenth celebration. Yeah, they sure did.
- 1:09:17Hey, hats off to them for showing progression.
- 1:09:24All right, y'all. That concludes this episode of For the Fam podcast,
