Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06A great race preview for your listening pleasure on one of the best weeks of the year.
- 0:13G'day everyone, Rusty here.
- 0:15Happy Bathurst week.
- 0:16The 1000 is just days away and I thought we'd spend a moment with Team 18's Adrian Burgess to look at it from a team perspective.
- 0:24The build-up, the way they tackle it and the turnaround for the Gold Coast in a few weeks' time.
- 0:28ATB is kindly standing by.
- 0:29AtB is kindly standing by.
- 0:31Quick plug for a couple of recent feature episodes too.
- 0:35Lovely feedback from you all, especially the rally community, on Ed Ordinsky.
- 0:39Thank you.
- 0:40A three-parter there with the former Australian rally champion where he shared some important learnings along the way that aspiring competitors, no matter what motorsport discipline you're into, can learn from.
- 0:51Plus some cool Mitsubishi memories.
- 0:54What a chapter he had with them.
- 0:57And last week, a two-part chat with Fox Sports host Jess Yates dropped.
- 1:01You'll get a sense of her incredible drive and determination, plus some insights on what to expect at both the event and in their coverage this week.
- 1:10They have some good stuff planned, including a celebration for Craig Lowndes.
- 1:16Crazy to think where that 30 years since a young kid who was partnered with Brad Jones at HRT went.
- 1:23went.
- 1:23While we're talking, Craig Lance, don't forget some awesome additions of the new Supercars Drivers Only podcast, which lives here in the garage.
- 1:31There's a Sandown Review, Bathurst Preview and a listener mail ep.
- 1:35Both were gold.
- 1:37Join Garth Tander, David Reynolds, CL and Will Davison for those.
- 1:42You can find them in our library.
- 1:43Let's get to our guest because...
- 1:45Spare time is not something he'll have a lot of this week, and I'm going to say from the outset, we need to get him back on at some point for a feature.
- 1:52Episode two, Adrian Burgess.
- 1:54Hello, mate.
- 1:55Welcome to Rusty's Garage.
- 1:56Hey, Rusty.
- 1:57How are you, mate?
- 1:58Good to join you on here.
- 1:59It's great to catch up with you.
- 2:01You have a pretty extensive CV, right?
- 2:04McLaren, Formula One, and much more.
- 2:07Where does Bathurst rank for you compared to some of the races, some of the events that you've done in your career?
- 2:13Well, it's clearly the jewel in our crown.
- 2:16It's the one we all look forward to all year.
- 2:19For me, I love going there.
- 2:20I think everyone in Australia in motorsport does.
- 2:23But to put it on a global perspective, it's like walking into Monaco or...
- 2:29like Macau or Le Mans you just walk in there and you can just feel the tension and it's excited excitement you know everyone's just up on the haunches ready to go it's it's such a big day you never know what's gonna roll out in front of you and you think you're as prepared as you can be but you've just got to be ready for anything that's thrown at you and when you do win it and I've
- 2:54It's just an amazing feeling, but you lose more than you win there, and that's what makes it so good.
- 2:59Just take people back while we're on this sort of reminiscing feel, Adrian, to the start of this.
- 3:03You know, all the different teams you've worked with, DJR, Triple Eight and more.
- 3:08Is that win that you're talking about, is that in a personal sense the one that you cherish so far?
- 3:14And just rewind the clock to that moment for us.
- 3:16Yeah, I mean, I've only won this race in, and I say only, some people never get to do it, in 2012 with Jamie and PD.
- 3:24And that was a huge race.
- 3:26I mean, we had Davey, we had my current driver breathing down our neck, we had JC in fourth.
- 3:32Lounsey and Luffy, you know, with Luffy's airco driver, he was the third, they were on the podium.
- 3:37It's just the...
- 3:38I mean, we've been running one, two there before and not won it.
- 3:42You know, it's hard.
- 3:44We were really in the box seat in 2016 with GT.
- 3:48I thought we should have won that.
- 3:50We had fuel on everybody.
- 3:52Jay Dub and Scotty Mack came together at the chase there and we got caught up in their accident.
- 3:58It's such a hard one to piece together the perfect week, culminating in being at the first at the flag at the end of 161 laps.
- 4:06It's a massive, it's such a hard one to win.
- 4:08It's huge.
- 4:09It is.
- 4:09You're back with Charlie, right?
- 4:11How has the build-up been for this race, you know, for Team 18?
- 4:15Bit tough for them last year.
- 4:16What about the expectations for 2024?
- 4:19Yeah, look, we've had a tough year this year.
- 4:21We've had events where we've been really on the money.
- 4:24We rolled out the truck and the car's been good.
- 4:26And we've had events where we just can't turn the tyre on for one reason or another.
- 4:30And we've just totally underachieved by the levels we want to set.
- 4:35Being back with Charlie is great.
- 4:37He's just such a racer.
- 4:39He loves it.
- 4:41He's passionate about it.
- 4:42He wears his heart on his sleeve.
- 4:43He's here to win.
- 4:44He's not here to be P2 or P3.
- 4:48So it's a bit of a journey we're on.
- 4:50We're sort of rebuilding.
- 4:51I mean, everyone sort of says that when they're not winning.
- 4:53It's a corny old phrase, but this really is about putting all the right people together, you know, getting them all pointed in the right direction.
- 5:00It's no...
- 5:02secret.
- 5:02We've had to rebuild the engineering team a little bit this year.
- 5:06We've got Dr. Jeff Slater on who's really helping.
- 5:09He's only been with us part-time this year because I couldn't get him full-time but he's coming back full-time next year.
- 5:15He's moving to Melbourne.
- 5:17It takes a long time to get all the ingredients together.
- 5:21I think we've got good cars.
- 5:22We've got good drivers.
- 5:24We say farewell to a legend at the end of this year and Frosty really is a ripper bloke.
- 5:30But then hopefully we sing welcome in the door to a new, young, fresh talent in Anton.
- 5:36So it's a huge, long process to get everything together, get everything right.
- 5:42And you never know how close or how far you are away from race wins in this category.
- 5:47The Gen 3 platform for me has been really, really good.
- 5:50It's leveled the playing field.
- 5:52The quick teams are still the quick teams, but now you've got other teams challenging for race wins.
- 5:58And we've managed to bring in another manufacturer, which is huge.
- 6:01Great story.
- 6:02Okay, can we dissect a couple of things and just sort of broadly preview the event?
- 6:05Firstly, you mentioned Frosty there, right?
- 6:072013 winner.
- 6:09Final Bathurst appearance for him with you guys.
- 6:12Has that all sort of sunk in for you and the team?
- 6:15It's hard for everyone to process, especially for Mark.
- 6:19But look, we're all professional.
- 6:21Mark's ultimate professional, so is the team.
- 6:23So we're going there excited.
- 6:25You know, we had a good 500 there back in February.
- 6:29We didn't get the results we needed, but the car was definitely quick.
- 6:32Frosty had a really quick race car and Dave had a ripper of a qualifying car, but we had a couple too many mistakes and we didn't really get the result.
- 6:40But we, so we go in there confident that we've got
- 6:43We're understanding what we need in our quality car and our race car.
- 6:46But like I said earlier, it's such a hard thing to put together there and be quick when you need to be.
- 6:52You don't need to be quick there all the time.
- 6:54You need to be quick in quality of the shootout and the race.
- 6:57You've got a lot of practice.
- 6:58You've got a lot of time to get the co-drivers up to speed, which you do.
- 7:02It's an important part of your day on Sunday are those guys jumping in and doing the job.
- 7:07So we're lucky there with Michael and Warren.
- 7:09We've got two of the oldest guys in the field, but they're the sorts of driver that will give you the car back in the same condition.
- 7:16I think you gave it to them and, you know, the brakes and gearbox won't be hanging off it.
- 7:20They know their job.
- 7:21They know they've got to give it back to the lead drivers in a good condition, and that's exactly what they'll do.
- 7:29you know, we've tried to tick every box we can on the lead up.
- 7:32It's a busy period, you know, just coming off the back of sand down for everybody, but that's what makes it so exciting about going there.
- 7:39Definitely.
- 7:39They are great co-drivers, as you say, Michael Caruso and Warren Luff.
- 7:42Great.
- 7:43A great part of the sum of many parts that will come together here for you.
- 7:48Can I just touch on Davey Reynolds for a minute?
- 7:50You mentioned him.
- 7:51I mean, I personally have very vivid recollections of his 2017 when he was with us on the pod earlier this year.
- 7:59It is still kind of early-ish, if you like, on his Team 18 journey too.
- 8:03How confident is that side of the garage feeling, given that you've had a visit to the mountain there already earlier this year and we're going back now for the big race?
- 8:12Yeah, it's extremely confident.
- 8:14I don't think any team really doubts its drivers, and we certainly don't with our two, but especially with Davey, we know he performs well there.
- 8:22He's excited going there.
- 8:23We've got a good run in, I think, to the end of the season for us.
- 8:27You know, he was fantastic on the Gold Coast last year and Adelaide, and he always is a Bathurst.
- 8:33So the guys...
- 8:34The whole team is just pumped.
- 8:36They're all racers.
- 8:37They're all angry when we don't win.
- 8:39And they're happy when we have some success.
- 8:41And that's how I want them to be.
- 8:42And that's how we need to be as a team.
- 8:44You know, you don't want to be packing the truck up in sixth, you know, being sixth place and being happy.
- 8:50You want to see some anger.
- 8:51You want to see some people pissed off and angry.
- 8:53that we haven't delivered.
- 8:54So, look, Dave is a character and he's a great part of the team.
- 8:59He keeps everybody up on their toes and enjoying doing what they're doing.
- 9:04But when he puts his helmet on or when he's in the truck with the engineers, he's deadly serious.
- 9:08He's not the joker that you see in front of the media.
- 9:11He knows when he's got to be serious and pull his socks up and work, and he certainly does that.
- 9:16But he's a breath of fresh air to have around the garage.
- 9:19Yeah, he's entertaining to work with, that's for sure.
- 9:22The 2024 edition of the great race is going to be different to last year for all sorts of reasons.
- 9:27I think, can we give fans a sense of how this race might play out?
- 9:33And I can't ask that in a standard sense because it's just so many variables that you have to manoeuvre with and be malleable with, isn't there, on the run.
- 9:40But, I mean, the first thing I think of, Adrian, I mean, soft tyre last year.
- 9:44This time around, we're on the hard, aren't we?
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:46I mean, last year was...
- 9:49It was a good race, but as we all saw, the soft tyre marbles up very easily and it becomes like a wet track, so to speak.
- 9:56You've only really got one line the last half of the race, which wasn't great, but we proved when we went back there for the 500 in February, the hard tyres, the tyres I have around there.
- 10:06So that'll be different to last year's race.
- 10:09And obviously the other big consideration now is that we need to start, well, we have to start by the rules with our primary driver.
- 10:16That has taken a little bit of the strategy out of the equation.
- 10:21So I think you'll see most teams, you know, you'll have to start with your primary.
- 10:25So you'll go, you know, you'll leave a double stint your primary at the start and then double stint your co-driver and then double stint your main home or you'll do the ABABAA.
- 10:35So you'll keep swapping between your primary and your co-driver.
- 10:41But in the old days of triple stinting your main driver home now with the Gen 3 cars harder because the fuel cell is 133 litres now.
- 10:49It's a bit bigger.
- 10:51And if you try and triple stint home, you don't have too many laps up your sleeve under safety car to trigger or to go over your three-and-a-half-hour continuous driving.
- 11:02Now, I'm telling you all the strategy here, Preston.
- 11:05You're telling me the considerations, not how you necessarily play them.
- 11:08But anyway.
- 11:11It's going to see car speed will be the – it always is the factor.
- 11:14If you've got a quick car, you're in the box seat and you can do anything when you've got a quick car.
- 11:19So that's the objective of the Thursday, Friday, and what you get a Saturday is to just make sure you've got a good race car.
- 11:26It doesn't matter if you're not in the 10 in qualifying, although you always want to be there.
- 11:30You want to be on that shoot-tap lap on Saturday afternoon, but it's not the end of the world if you're not.
- 11:35We'll sneak a quick break here on Rusty's Garage.
- 11:37We'll continue our chat with Team 18's Adrian Burgess on the other side of this.
- 11:45You're listening to The Motorsport Brief, our garage shortcast.
- 11:48For all sorts of news and stories happening in motorsport, this edition is all about the great race, the 2024 Repco Bathurst 1000.
- 11:56Back to our preview convo now with Adrian Burgess from Team 18.
- 12:02Give us a little sense for the audience, if you don't mind, of when this preparation started for you guys, I'm assuming months ago in some respects.
- 12:10And on race week, we're lucky to be talking to you on the Monday evening of a massive week.
- 12:15You'll probably get there in the dark most mornings, leave in the dark most nights and so on.
- 12:19Just paint that picture of how many people you're looking after and so on.
- 12:23Yeah, well, we're a relatively small team for a two-car team.
- 12:26We're only 25 people.
- 12:29And going back to what you said, it starts a long, long time ago.
- 12:33Really, you know, it starts sort of a year ago when you're picking your drivers, making sure you've got the best two co-drivers you can.
- 12:39But even from the very first event of the year when you're planning and scheduling all your engine mileage, your gearbox mileage, your servicing of your car, your car,
- 12:48You're going through the year with pretty much a set plan on engines coming in and out, making sure you've got a fresh engine for the 1,000.
- 12:58You don't have your favorite engine like you used to have in the old days.
- 13:01The Gen 3 engine is now.
- 13:03They're very, very equal across the whole field, and both your engines or all four or five of your engines in your pool are all very – they're incredibly similar now.
- 13:12We don't have the power degradation that we used to have under Gen 2.
- 13:15So you're mapping out your testing schedule, your ride days, your events from months and months prior to make sure you feel you land in sync here, you know, between Sandown and then Sandown and Bathurst with your engines, your gearbox, all your major components serviced in the right phase.
- 13:36And again, with this car, you don't...
- 13:38Well, we don't go there knowing on Friday night we're doing engines, gearboxes, radiators, all the things that you used to with Gen 2.
- 13:45You don't do that with Gen. We don't need to do that with Gen 3.
- 13:49But you want to arrive here with a fresh car.
- 13:51You're still doing.
- 13:52you know, 1,700, 1,800 kilometers throughout the weekend.
- 13:56And the most important of those kilometers are the last six, which is that last lap.
- 14:00So it takes a lot of planning and a lot of work by the guys.
- 14:05And, you know, you touched on it earlier, you have to be malleable during the year.
- 14:08You can have an accident, you can have an engine issue, and just takes yourself out of your...
- 14:13You predetermine the cycle and you've just got to be able to react to that.
- 14:17And that's the same during the weekend.
- 14:19If you have any issues, you've got to be ready.
- 14:21But, you know, we've all got spare gearboxes ready, upright, steering racks.
- 14:26There's a lot of work gone in from the team and the guys preparing.
- 14:31all your spare parts, all your inventory, all your bodywork.
- 14:34And on the back of that, not that it's your focus when you're there, but you've got an incredibly short turnaround after this event to go to the Gold Coast.
- 14:42So that's there at the back of your mind.
- 14:44It won't impact on what you do at Bathurst.
- 14:47You do the best job you possibly can and you worry about the...
- 14:50Anything that may have upset afterwards, you worry about that on Monday morning.
- 14:55But, yeah, Bathurst is the – yeah, it's a great race.
- 14:58It's a huge race.
- 15:00You talked about tyres before and the difference between 2023 and then how the co-drivers or the fact that you've got to start with the primary driver and the difference there this year.
- 15:10A year on in the learnings of Gen 3 going into this edition of the great race, what do you reckon kind of the biggest learning has been and –
- 15:18what that might mean for what fans will be treated to on Sunday?
- 15:22I think you've got...
- 15:23I think you're seeing it.
- 15:24You know, your big teams, you know, AAA and those guys, they roll out with a quick car every year, whether you change a car, whether you don't.
- 15:31You know, they are just...
- 15:33They're just a very well-oiled machine, but I think what you're seeing now, you're seeing a lot closer.
- 15:38You've unfortunately not seen my team at the front as much as we want, but you're seeing Matt Stones up there in and out.
- 15:44You're seeing Groves, Walkinshaws, you know, in and out.
- 15:48And it's such, it's a very...
- 15:50not peculiar cars, a very fine set-up window for each given tyre to get it right or to get it wrong.
- 15:57So you're seeing teams come in and out of the performance window, but I think overall you're seeing more teams and more drivers in with a shout of winning or at least having a good weekend.
- 16:07And for me, that's been a great thing for Gen 3.
- 16:10That was always one of the mission statements, what we wanted to achieve with it.
- 16:16So I think that's a good thing.
- 16:17I think
- 16:18If you're a team doing its job on the day or on those Saturday, Sunday, it's going to be...
- 16:26Anyone can have a good weekend and upset the form book if they do it right.
- 16:30And a big team, and we've seen it plenty of times this year, an acknowledged big team can get it wrong...
- 16:36And they're qualifying 17, 18, 19, 20 and having a tough weekend of it.
- 16:40So that's what I mean when it's very easy to be in or out of the ideal performance window.
- 16:46That's what this car's done.
- 16:47It has mixed it up a little bit.
- 16:50The margins are so small in terms of setup between getting it right and getting it wrong.
- 16:54And I think from an engineer and a team's perspective, that's...
- 16:58makes it more rewarding when you do have the good days.
- 17:00Most definitely.
- 17:01To wrap this up, as you know better than just about anybody, it's a people game.
- 17:05So what is it like looking after those 25 people, keeping them focused, keeping them motivated across the massive days to come, given what is at stake here?
- 17:15And then the different personalities you have as drivers and ensuring that you can get the optimum from these competitors.
- 17:23That's a massive part of this, Adrian, isn't it?
- 17:26100%.
- 17:27This has always been a people game, and it's part of the game that I enjoy.
- 17:33They're all different characters.
- 17:34I've had people in the past sit down in front of my desk on a Monday morning and say, can you give me a tune-up?
- 17:40I made too many mistakes at the weekend.
- 17:42I need a tune-up.
- 17:43And you give them a kick up the arse, so to speak, and they go away, and they say, right, that's what I needed.
- 17:48And then you've got other people that...
- 17:50you can see they're just down or a bit demotivated.
- 17:54So you've got to wrap your arm around them, you know, wrap them in cotton wool.
- 17:57They reassure them, tell them they're doing a good job and they're, you know, they're one person in a big, you know, cog, big set of gears working away.
- 18:05So you've just got to play your role.
- 18:07And they're all completely different.
- 18:09You know, the same with drivers.
- 18:10Some drivers...
- 18:12they want, um, they want to pat on the back or they just want to feel like they're loved.
- 18:17Some drivers you can't do that with because, you know, they've just been around too long and they don't want to listen to it.
- 18:22So, you know, not even to go there.
- 18:24You just, you just deal with the facts and say, look, you're good.
- 18:27You're good.
- 18:27You need to pull your socks up here.
- 18:29They're all completely different.
- 18:31And it's,
- 18:32Definitely a challenge getting the right engineer and driver balance between introverts, extroverts.
- 18:39There's a lot of time and energy goes into trying to make sure you've got the right people in the right position in the team, so to speak.
- 18:47And that's why I say it's a journey.
- 18:50You don't just walk in and suddenly you're one extra person and suddenly everybody starts winning.
- 18:55It doesn't happen like that.
- 18:56It's not that easy.
- 18:58But it is a bit of a journey.
- 19:00It is cliche.
- 19:01I hate it because you end up using it so often.
- 19:04But we've just got to keep doing what we're doing.
- 19:08Keep focused.
- 19:09Keep our eye on the goals and all the objectives.
- 19:12And, you know, you've just got to do the work.
- 19:14There's no substitute for hard work.
- 19:15Exactly right.
- 19:17Exactly right.
- 19:18Go well this week.
- 19:19You've been awesome with your time.
- 19:21We know the Energizer Bunny, the boss who was with us about 18 months ago on the podcast, Charlie Schwerkalt, loves this event dearly and would love a really good result on Sunday.
- 19:32For all the team, the 25 that are working enormously hard and have done for months now, we hope it's one that you can savour, Adrian, and have an awesome week at the Mountain.
- 19:44Look forward to it, mate.
- 19:44Thanks for being on.
- 19:45One thing I do know is I've got a great group of people.
- 19:49They put their shoulder to the wheel.
- 19:51They work hard.
- 19:51So whatever the result comes Sunday, it won't be for the lack of trying.
- 19:56That's a nice thing going there, knowing that everyone's trying to get the same result as I am.
- 20:00So look forward to it.
- 20:02I'll say hello to Charlie for you, and hopefully we'll see you soon.
- 20:04Look forward to it.
- 20:05Thank you.
- 20:07One of the things that you will enjoy this week among the many and varied support activities at the track is the massive field of heritage touring cars from both sides of the ditch.
- 20:18Four-time winner Greg Murphy is pulling the helmet on for that.
- 20:21And man, there are some awesome cars taking part with a lot of history around that race.
- 20:27Plus, you may have noticed, among other milestone activity, that the Bowdens and the Bathurst Museum have reunited the legendary big banger Holden dealer team Commodores.
- 20:3740 years on from that unforgettable one-two there for the late Peter Brock and Larry Perkins and the late Johnny Harvey, who was home second in the car he shared with David Parsons.
- 20:48Seriously cool cars.
- 20:49What about the next chapter of history too, if you're looking forward?
- 20:53Toyota have some great activations happening around that very exciting news recently that Supra will be a part of the championship in 2026.
- 21:02Check out the mock-up of that car and much more in either the coverage or at the track.
- 21:08So who wins this weekend?
- 21:10I have a bit of a soft spot for Brock Feeney and Jamie Wincub.
- 21:13Jamie seems to be every bit as good when he steps back behind the wheel and Brock has left...
- 21:18no stone unturned to make up for that heartbreak of last year.
- 21:22And that's probably the reason why I lean that way.
- 21:25Cam Waters and James Moffat, they're in scintillating form.
- 21:28What I believe is one of the best chances, certainly in recent time for Tickford at the mountain.
- 21:33Naturally, the Sandown winners, Will Brown and Scott Pye, they'll absolutely be a factor.
- 21:38And Garth Tander and Matt Payne will be strong for Ford.
- 21:41GT is a really good chance of adding another Bathurst trophy to the cabinet.
- 21:47So...
- 21:48I know I've offered lots of options there.
- 21:50I reckon Brock and J-Dub just.
- 21:52I can hear producer Tom and editor Link asking me for a smokey here.
- 21:57Seems wrong to think of Chas Mostert and Lee Holdsworth in that bracket, and I've only done that given how gutted Lee was after Sandown.
- 22:04They will be strong there.
- 22:06Can't go too far past that.
- 22:08Craig Lowndes, good car, team, and a co-driver with a very bright future in Cooper Murray.
- 22:14Add to the list of smoky options, James Golding and David Russell.
- 22:17DR has been such a good co-driver in recent years.
- 22:21So rock solid, reliable, and continues to...
- 22:24deliver.
- 22:25Premieres seem to be really hitting their stride too.
- 22:27So which of those ones?
- 22:30Chas and Lee.
- 22:31I was there when they won in 2021.
- 22:33They are better than a smoky, but you know what I mean.
- 22:37That is it for today.
- 22:38Enjoy a great weekend at the mountain.
- 22:40If you're going, drive carefully.
- 22:42And if you're not, enjoy some of the most extensive coverage of any kind of motorsport globally.
- 22:48More than 40 hours on Fox Sports in Australia, Sky in New Zealand, and lots of places
- 22:54right around the world.
- 22:55Cannot wait.
- 22:56We'll catch you next week.
- 22:57Bye for now.
