- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung and
- 0:02you're listening to the Family Chiropractic Center
- 0:04podcast coming to you from right here in Robinson
- 0:07Township. Today we're talking about something
- 0:09that comes up in my office almost every single
- 0:12day, staying active after 40. And I don't just
- 0:15mean surviving your workouts. I mean actually
- 0:17feeling good, moving well, and doing the things
- 0:21you love without paying for it the next morning.
- 0:23So let's get into it. Here's what I hear a lot.
- 0:26Someone comes in and they say, Dr. Hartung, I
- 0:29used to run three miles, no problem. Now I go
- 0:31for a walk and my back is killing me. Sound familiar?
- 0:35You are not alone. And here's the good news.
- 0:37This is not just something you have to accept
- 0:39as part of getting older. Your body is incredibly
- 0:42adaptable. It just needs a little more attention
- 0:45and a smarter approach than it did when you were
- 0:4725. Now, here's the thing about your body after
- 0:5040. Things start to change. Your joints have
- 0:53more wear on them. Your muscles take longer to
- 0:55warm up. Your connective tissue, things like
- 0:57tendons and ligaments, they're not as elastic
- 1:00as they used to be. And your recovery time is
- 1:02longer. That's just biology. But none of that
- 1:04means you have to slow down. It means you have
- 1:06to be smarter about how you move. Let me break
- 1:09this down for you. One of the biggest mistakes
- 1:11I see people make is skipping the warm -up. They
- 1:14go from sitting at a desk all day to jumping
- 1:16into a workout or a jog or even yard work. And
- 1:19then they wonder why something pulls or gets
- 1:21sore. Your muscles and joints need time to get
- 1:24ready. Even just five to ten minutes of gentle
- 1:27movement before activity makes a huge difference.
- 1:30Walking in place, some light stretching, slow
- 1:32arm circles, nothing fancy. Just give your body
- 1:35a heads up that you're about to ask something
- 1:37of it. The second thing I want you to think about
- 1:40is recovery. After 40, your body needs more time
- 1:44between intense activity sessions. That's not
- 1:46weakness. That's wisdom. Sleep matters more.
- 1:49Hydration matters more. And honestly, rest days
- 1:52are just as important as workout days. I tell
- 1:54my patients all the time, the work doesn't happen
- 1:57during the workout. It happens while you recover.
- 1:59Honor that process. Now here's what's interesting
- 2:01about the spine specifically. As we age, The
- 2:04discs between our vertebrae lose some of their
- 2:07moisture and flexibility. That's normal, but
- 2:09it does mean that your spine is more sensitive
- 2:11to repetitive stress, poor posture, and sudden
- 2:14movements. Low impact activity is your friend.
- 2:17Swimming, walking, cycling, yoga, resistance
- 2:20training with proper form. These keep you strong
- 2:22and mobile without hammering your joints. So
- 2:25what can you start doing today? First, add a
- 2:27warm -up to everything, not just workouts. Second,
- 2:30pay attention to how your body feels the day
- 2:32after activity. A little soreness is fine. Sharp
- 2:35pain or stiffness that doesn't go away is your
- 2:38body asking for help. Third, work on your core.
- 2:41A strong core protects your spine. It doesn't
- 2:43have to mean crunches, planks, bird dogs, gentle
- 2:45pilates, movements. These are all great options.
- 2:48And here's my gentle nudge. If you've been dealing
- 2:50with nagging back pain, hip tightness, shoulder
- 2:53issues, or anything that keeps flaring up during
- 2:55or after activity, please don't just push through
- 2:58it. That's when it's time to come see us. At
- 3:00Family Chiropractic Center we look at the whole
- 3:02picture. How your spine is aligned, how your
- 3:05joints are moving, what might be creating tension
- 3:07or restriction in your body. A lot of times the
- 3:10issue is something very fixable. You just need
- 3:13someone to take a look. You don't have to give
- 3:14up the activities you love. You just might need
- 3:16a little support getting your body moving the
- 3:18way it's supposed to. Alright, thank you so much
- 3:21for spending a few minutes with me today. I really
- 3:24appreciate you listening. If you have questions
- 3:27or you're ready to come in and get evaluated,
