- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 25 — can you believe it? Feels like just yesterday we were learning numbers one to five. Lucas: Right? And now we're moving on to something really useful: time words. Today's topic is all about saying 'today', 'tomorrow', and 'yesterday' in Malay. Luna: Oh good, because I keep mixing up when I'm supposed to meet my friend. Is it today or tomorrow? I need the Malay words! Lucas: Perfect. So let's start with 'today'. In Malay, 'today' is 'hari ini'. Say it with me: hari ini. Luna: Hari ini. Lucas: Exactly. 'Hari' means day, 'ini' means this. So 'hari ini' is 'this day'. Luna: Ah, that makes sense. Like 'ini' is 'this' — we learned that with colors, right? 'Ini warna merah' meaning 'this is red'. Lucas: Right. So 'hari ini' — today. Now, 'tomorrow' in Malay is 'esok'. E-sok. Luna: Esok. Lucas: Good. And 'yesterday' is 'semalam'. Se-ma-lam. Luna: Semalam. Lucas: Yes. So we have: hari ini, esok, semalam. Let's practice with a mini conversation. If I ask 'Hari ini hari apa?' — that means 'What day is today?' Luna: Hari ini hari apa? — oh, that's a question we saw in the days of the week episode! Lucas: Exactly. So how would you answer, 'Today is Monday'? Luna: Hari ini hari Isnin? Lucas: Perfect. 'Hari ini hari Isnin.' Now let's make it a full exchange. I'll ask you, 'Hari ini hari apa?' Luna: Hari ini hari Isnin? Lucas: Yes. But let's say today is Tuesday — Selasa. So you'd say 'Hari ini hari Selasa.' Luna: Hari ini hari Selasa. Lucas: Great. Now let's put all three time words into simple sentences. 'Saya pergi hari ini' means 'I go today.' 'Saya pergi esok' means 'I go tomorrow.' And 'Saya pergi semalam' means 'I went yesterday.' Notice there's no change in the verb — Malay doesn't change verbs for past or future. We just use the time word. Luna: Oh that's so easy! So 'Saya makan nasi lemak semalam' means 'I ate nasi lemak yesterday'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Saya makan nasi lemak semalam.' Perfect sentence. Now let's do a quick role-play. I'll be a friend asking about plans. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Hari ini hari apa? Luna: Hari ini hari Rabu. Lucas: Oh, Rabu. Okay, esok kita jumpa? Luna: Esok? Yes, esok kita jumpa! Lucas: Nice. 'Kita jumpa' means 'we meet'. So 'esok kita jumpa' — we meet tomorrow. You used 'esok' naturally. Luna: I did! So 'semalam saya jumpa kawan' means 'yesterday I met a friend'? Lucas: Perfect. 'Kawan' means friend. You're building sentences now. Luna: That feels good. So let me review: hari ini, esok, semalam. Lucas: Yes. And 'Hari ini hari apa?' for asking the day. Let's repeat them all one more time. Listen and repeat after me: hari ini. Luna: Hari ini. Lucas: Esok. Luna: Esok. Lucas: Semalam. Luna: Semalam. Lucas: Hari ini hari apa? Luna: Hari ini hari apa? Lucas: Hari ini hari Isnin. Luna: Hari ini hari Isnin. Lucas: Excellent. And remember, you can always practice with the exercises on the Fexingo app. We're making it super easy to review on the go. Luna: Yeah, I've been using it to brush up on my numbers and colors. It's really helpful. Lucas: Good to hear. So for today, we've covered: hari ini, esok, semalam, and how to ask and answer 'What day is today?'. Luna: I feel like I can actually talk about my plans now. Esok saya pergi pasar! Lucas: Ah, 'esok saya pergi pasar' — tomorrow I go to the market. That's a great sentence. Just don't forget to say 'hari ini' when it's today. Luna: Right: hari ini saya pergi pasar, esok saya pergi pasar... I'm mixing it up. Lucas: You'll get it with practice. Repeat it slowly: hari ini... saya... pergi... pasar. Luna: Hari ini saya pergi pasar. Lucas: Good. And now: esok saya pergi pasar. Luna: Esok saya pergi pasar. Lucas: See? You're doing it. One last time, all together: hari ini, esok, semalam. Luna: Hari ini, esok, semalam. Lucas: Perfect. That's your lesson for Episode 25. Thanks for learning with Fexingo. Practice these words, and we'll see you next time. Selamat tinggal! Luna: Selamat tinggal! Jumpa lagi!
