Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Simon Bridges: Auckland Business Chamber Chief Executive on business confidence slumping amid oil shock
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Remember the outrage over the bureaucrats working from home. Government
- 0:03Speaker 1: comes in and says, pack your lunch, go back to work.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Problem is, it's not happening. As you'll know from listening
- 0:08Speaker 1: to this show, ACC is already staged to back down
- 0:11Speaker 1: on that. Now MB is doing the same, and to
- 0:14Speaker 1: her credit Flirfitt Simon's the PSA union has lawyered up
- 0:18Speaker 1: and successfully argued the workers collective contracts allowed them to
- 0:22Speaker 1: work from home, so they should keep it. Now the
- 0:24Speaker 1: policy to restrict working from home is heading for the bin.
- 0:28Speaker 1: According to MB, some ACC staff only have to be
- 0:31Speaker 1: in the office two days a week, the equivalent of
- 0:33Speaker 1: a weekend at the office days off or at home
- 0:36Speaker 1: are usually Fridays and Mondays. Quite convenient for them, isn't it.
- 0:40Speaker 1: This is all in spite of the fact that management
- 0:42Speaker 1: at ACC said staff are less productive and it's a
- 0:46Speaker 1: culture killer. Now, I don't blame the workers here all
- 0:49Speaker 1: the union. They're exercising their rights they won at fair
- 0:52Speaker 1: and square. They didn't even have to get to the
- 0:54Speaker 1: Employment Relations Authority, so good on them. But for anyone
- 0:57Speaker 1: who runs a business in the private sector or works
- 0:59Speaker 1: in way, this sort of stuff makes your blood boil,
- 1:02Speaker 1: doesn't it. If it's good enough for us, why not them?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Do they really work as much or efficiently at home?
- 1:09Speaker 1: And why was this cause written into their collective contracts
- 1:12Speaker 1: in the first place. Surely, once they expire, the next
- 1:16Speaker 1: offer of work might just require workers to actually turn
- 1:21Speaker 1: up for work. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
