- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team, welcome to the show. Hope you're having an awesome
- 0:24week in this episode. Today I am going to risk talking
- 0:28about something that might seemingly be very obvious to
- 0:31you. This episode is going to be
- 0:33centered around an idea, and that idea is that progress is
- 0:37not linear. Progress is not a straight line.
- 0:40And right now you might be shaking your head saying, OK,
- 0:44duh, Steph, I already know that progress is not linear for sure.
- 0:49But I'm going to give you a very gentle reminder that even though
- 0:53we might know something, common sense is not always common
- 0:57practice. We might understand logically
- 1:00that progress is not linear, but we all get stuck in the trap of
- 1:03feeling like we're behind or feeling like we're not doing
- 1:06enough or getting frustrated in our day-to-day life because
- 1:10we're not seeing the forward momentum or the results that we
- 1:13expect to see. And so that's actually what this
- 1:17conversation is really about, our misguided expectations.
- 1:23So we are going to look at that through the lens of progress and
- 1:27how we expect that progress is going to be linear in our lives.
- 1:32I can speak to this in a very expert way because I am the
- 1:34classic example of somebody who has common sense but doesn't
- 1:39always put it into common practice.
- 1:41I'm the person who has struggled historically, was feeling like
- 1:45I'm not doing enough, feeling like I'm falling behind.
- 1:48It's that people pleasing perfectionism saboteur that
- 1:52comes in loud when you are thinking about God.
- 1:55I just really want to get to that next milestone in my life
- 1:58or I really want to accomplish this achievement, this accolade.
- 2:03It's a very common experience for people and so I think it's
- 2:06something that we need to talk about more often.
- 2:10I come from a very athlete oriented mindset, so this idea
- 2:14of the hustle and grind mentality, it very much
- 2:18resonates with me. Unfortunately, the flip side of
- 2:21that is it can feel really frustrating and uncomfortable
- 2:25when you don't feel like you're making progress in your life.
- 2:29Thankfully, with age and wisdom and life experience and all the
- 2:33work that I've done with patients and clients, it has
- 2:35sunk in for me at a very deep cellular level that progress is
- 2:39not linear. And I know we all want it to be.
- 2:42We all want that constant upward trajectory.
- 2:46But I think every one of us can agree that that's just not how
- 2:48it goes. That's not how life works.
- 2:50And we see the evidence of that all around us.
- 2:53I always tell my patients healing is not linear.
- 2:57I have to say it dozens of times a week because people are so
- 3:02often frustrated with their health journeys.
- 3:04You know, we all want fast progress.
- 3:06We want things to improve quickly.
- 3:08We don't like plateaus, we don't like pauses, especially when it
- 3:11comes to our health. I totally get it.
- 3:13I'm very much the same way. Nobody likes a plateau.
- 3:17Nobody likes to feel stuck for any length of time.
- 3:20But as I always say to those patients, there's so many things
- 3:24that are happening in the body behind the scenes that you can't
- 3:27see. The body's doing a lot of work.
- 3:29It's putting in a lot of energy into healing or losing weight or
- 3:33recovering from an injury or an illness.
- 3:36And just because you can't see what's happening doesn't mean
- 3:39that it's not happening. Which means that this all has so
- 3:43much more to do with our definition of progress than the
- 3:48actual act of progress happening or not.
- 3:52So how do we define progress? How do we define progress in our
- 3:56society and our culture? Well, largely we define progress
- 4:00based on what we can see. We would all probably agree that
- 4:04progress can look like record-breaking income for this
- 4:08month in your business, or it looks like the happy marriage or
- 4:11the new car or the success in your career.
- 4:14Rarely do we see somebody talking about progress in terms
- 4:17of the hours spent solving a problem late at night, or the
- 4:22lessons that we learned from that big failure we had last
- 4:25week, or the missed workouts that led to us understanding how
- 4:30much we actually need to work out.
- 4:32The late night conversations that you have in your head with
- 4:34somebody when you're trying to work through a conflict.
- 4:37Progress is not those things. Progress is shiny, it's
- 4:42exciting, right? And these are all lessons that
- 4:46we've learned since we were little kids.
- 4:48You know, I, I'm sure that you've seen the picture of the
- 4:51iceberg where you see the tip of it and it says, this is what
- 4:56people see. And what they see is success,
- 4:59accolades, good results, fame, whatever it might be.
- 5:04And then in the visual, you can see below the surface of the
- 5:06water is the bulk of the iceberg.
- 5:09It's all the stuff that you don't get to see in the light of
- 5:13day, like the mistakes and the long nights and the failures, or
- 5:18the redos, or the 10 iterations of your business that you've
- 5:22gone through, or the starting over, or the feeling frustrated
- 5:25with technology, the tears, the conflicts between team members.
- 5:29That's all stuff that is below the surface.
- 5:31It's the stuff that we don't see.
- 5:34But we all have these preconceived notions about what
- 5:37progress should look like and what success should look like,
- 5:41that it should be the straight line that progress should be
- 5:44happening every single day and it should be on a steady
- 5:47incline. Who actually experiences life
- 5:50like that? Who experiences progress like
- 5:53that? It's not me.
- 5:55I don't know about you, but that's not how I've experienced
- 5:58progress in my life. Not all the time.
- 6:02About 5 or 6 years ago my wife got me a guitar and she told me
- 6:08that I needed to chill out and so I I think she got me this
- 6:11guitar to get me to do something creative and you know keep my
- 6:15mind occupied and my brain busy. Give me a hobby and I actually
- 6:19love playing the guitar. I love practicing the guitar it
- 6:22is very calming for me. But something that I noticed
- 6:26every time that I practice is how non linear my progress is.
- 6:32I use this app called Guitar Tab and it lets me play my favorite
- 6:36songs and so I'll often sit down and practice some warmups before
- 6:40I start playing chords and diving into songs.
- 6:43And what I notice is that some days my fingers feel like
- 6:46they're not my own. I cannot make them work right.
- 6:50It feels like they're put on wrong and I'm hitting the wrong
- 6:54strings and the notes are sounding all muffled and the
- 6:57tone is off despite the fact that I've played these notes and
- 7:01chords so many times. For some reason, on some days I
- 7:05can't get my hands to move right, and then other days I'll
- 7:09sit down to play and my fingers move perfectly without even
- 7:12having to think about it. The notes are just ringing out
- 7:15crystal clear. My fingers are finding the
- 7:18strings so well, and what I've come to recognize is that it
- 7:22often takes me a few days of fumbling around before my hands
- 7:25start working the way that I want them to.
- 7:28And then all the sudden I'll have a breakthrough and I'll
- 7:30start to be able to play chords that I couldn't play before.
- 7:33Or I'll be able to hit a transition in a song with
- 7:35complete ease, whereas before I was messing it up every time.
- 7:39It was almost impossible for me to move my hands that fast
- 7:42before. And it takes these periods of
- 7:45feeling stuck to then have a breakthrough that allows me to
- 7:50feel this big jump in progress in my playing.
- 7:54And isn't this the way for so many things in life?
- 7:58You know, we get so frustrated with a project that we might be
- 8:00working on, and then all of a sudden you have this big
- 8:03breakthrough and everything seems to fall into place.
- 8:06Or we feel a transition coming in our life, maybe with a job or
- 8:09a relationship, and we can feel so stuck in it, like we aren't
- 8:13making any progress at all. And then all of a sudden
- 8:15something unlocks and we're able to see this new opportunity.
- 8:20Or maybe there's some new ease in a relationship that wasn't
- 8:23there before. That is exactly how things go so
- 8:27often in life. Progress is not linear.
- 8:30It's so much more often a twisted jumble of yarn than it
- 8:35is a straight line. And when I think about why this
- 8:39might be, I come up with a few reasons that makes sense to my
- 8:42brain. First of all, I think that
- 8:45sometimes we have to put in the reps before something really
- 8:49sinks in. And I know this makes sense to
- 8:51you. I'm sure that you've experienced
- 8:53this before, but just like in the case of the guitar, you have
- 8:57to put in a few reps, some practice sessions before you can
- 9:01unlock that next level of progress.
- 9:03We have to create those those nervous system connections and
- 9:07lay down those neural pathways for things to start working
- 9:10efficiently and synchronistically.
- 9:13I also think that amongst all the variables in the world, all
- 9:16the humans, all the factors, all the things that have to fall
- 9:20into place, sometimes it's about things lining up properly for us
- 9:24to be able to see that jump in progress.
- 9:26If we're talking about looking for a new job opportunity, maybe
- 9:30it's that other people in the company are shifting roles and
- 9:34making space for you. Maybe there's somebody that
- 9:37needs to move into your city to offer you that right role, that
- 9:40right job. We will never fully understand
- 9:44the timing and the complexity of all these human dynamics and
- 9:46ecosystems. It's just too big, it's too
- 9:48vast, but maybe things have to line up and createspace for you
- 9:53to have that next breakthrough and see that next big jump in
- 9:57progress. And then also sometimes I think
- 10:01that pauses and progress and the plateaus that we experience can
- 10:04be times where there's healing happening or times where we're
- 10:08making peace with things or getting the courage up to take
- 10:12action, or getting so frustrated that we just become willing to
- 10:16take the risk no matter what. It's like we're gathering more
- 10:20information and data so that we can make the next right
- 10:23decision. So all that to say, don't be
- 10:28distracted by the disillusionment that there has
- 10:31to be forward momentum all the time.
- 10:33I know that's what we see on social media and in the digital
- 10:37world is everybody's forward progress.
- 10:39But what you don't see is all the tangled up mess of yarn
- 10:43behind the scenes. You don't see the arguments with
- 10:46the spouse about money. You don't see the long sleepless
- 10:48nights trying to figure out problems in your business or
- 10:50your relationships. You don't see the fatigue or the
- 10:53mistakes or the conversations with friends trying to support
- 10:56each other through hard times. There's so much that we don't
- 10:59see. You don't know people's stories,
- 11:03and frankly, you're not supposed to.
- 11:06It's none of your business and not everything is meant to be
- 11:09visible or transparent for all to see.
- 11:12We are all entitled to our own work behind the scenes and in
- 11:16the shadows. It's necessary and it's just as
- 11:20it should be. I think that if you're living
- 11:22and acting with intention, if you're doing the work and you're
- 11:26putting in energy where it needs to be going, then progress is
- 11:30going to happen. You will be able to have the
- 11:33impact that you want to have in your life.
- 11:35Just don't expect it to be linear.
- 11:38So my challenge to you this week is just to keep moving forward,
- 11:43is to keep going and to accept the fact that if you're feeling
- 11:47like you're in a place of stuckness, it doesn't mean that
- 11:49you are not creating progress. It doesn't mean that you don't
- 11:53have forward momentum. It might just mean that you were
- 11:55in a moment where you have to put in a few more reps to unlock
- 11:59that next level of progress, or you are creating new neural
- 12:03pathways or things out in the world that we cannot see are
- 12:07lining up for your next big unlock of progress.
- 12:12So that's all for today. I hope this conversation helps
- 12:15ease your mind a little bit this week.
- 12:17I want you to know that you're doing a great job.
- 12:19And even if you feel like you're not making a lot of progress, I
- 12:23guarantee there is good stuff that is coming for you and that
- 12:27is happening in your life. So thank you for listening.
