- 0:49Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast along my partner
- 0:54bronzy glow. My name is Curtis Wilson and
- 0:59Brian today. The Hokies fall 3835, Liberty,
- 1:06and it's late. It's 10:30 Saturday night where
- 1:11I'm pounding on a Doppel, Vienna logger.
- 1:14You've got some Bach there and tonight.
- 1:18We call these recapping. This isn't a recap episode
- 1:22tonight or at least out of this game.
- 1:25This is a recap episode. Of the current coaching staff at
- 1:32this University. State of the program?
- 1:37Yeah, perfect way to put it because what happened today?
- 1:44Is inexcusable. on third, seven, football and me and Brian a
- 1:52little after the game for about 35 minutes we chatted Brian I'm
- 1:58up in my attic working. Got the earbuds in me and Ron
- 2:01are talking back and forth. He's, I mean, let's say, you
- 2:04want to just go do this now and light?
- 2:05Brown, we got to calm down if not.
- 2:07It's going to be more in this episode, but we could go into
- 2:18the details of the of what happened and it's a lot of shit.
- 2:25It's a lot of the shit we've seen before.
- 2:26It's a lot of shit that makes. Us angry.
- 2:29But we're not. We're going to break this down
- 2:31on the several levels, again of the state of the program and of
- 2:34the coaching staff, More earlier today Brian hit me with
- 2:40something talking about the way we do things and we look back
- 2:46and we pointed out that there have been essentially six games
- 2:51in the last five years. Take that back seven games.
- 2:57Since Justin Fuente took over as head coach, that Boggle the mind
- 3:02of why we lose Syracuse and 2016, Georgia Tech in 2017, ODU,
- 3:10and 2018, the Boston College, and the Duke game in 2019, and
- 3:15this year so far, Wake and Liberty the day.
- 3:19Big man, you brought it up. Go.
- 3:23I am tired, man, and I'm not just saying that because it's
- 3:2610:37 on a Saturday night. I am tired of watching this
- 3:32football. Team played down to sub
- 3:35competition. And then hope for the best
- 3:40because we do it once or twice every single year.
- 3:46And when we do it, it feels like we're just like the coaching
- 3:49staff is out there flailing. It's like once once the trouble
- 3:55hits against these lesser complex or competition, we just
- 3:58forget what to do. I mean the only area that I
- 4:04would say we did well in today is I mean I'm going to actually
- 4:09give the offensive line some credit.
- 4:10I think they did a pretty good job today.
- 4:13Couple flags that I'd like to see cleaned up but overall a
- 4:18decent game for them. But and Hendon hooker just need
- 4:22he bawled out when he needed to and we called his number.
- 4:25I'll whole lot. Probably more than I am
- 4:27comfortable with on a given game.
- 4:30But this is Liberty, folks. I know they're ranked number 25
- 4:37and they have some Talent. They have talent at certain
- 4:41areas, but most of their team is full of three star or less
- 4:44Talent. Yep, they have what 83 star
- 4:47players we have. Oh God.
- 4:50How many? I don't even know.
- 5:14And there there's no other way to spin it, or excuse it, or
- 5:20anything like that. We were out coach and it started
- 5:23at 15 minutes in the first quarter.
- 5:26Woohoo. All right.
- 5:28Hold on. You know, I missed the first
- 5:32half because I was at a baseball game.
- 5:34So I'll let you divulge a little bit under that.
- 5:39I mean first series gash up the middle gash, up the middle.
- 5:46What did I talk about when we recorded on Thursday night with
- 5:49the defensive tackle? So who did I say?
- 5:51Should be playing front line. Who did I say?
- 5:53Should be playing second. One we say, Crawford, and
- 5:55Kendricks and fuga, and Hewitt and me, and you have talked
- 5:59about this on this program and we talked about it outside this.
- 6:04Teams that run the fucking ball and I just dropped the first f
- 6:07bomb. I don't know if you want to keep
- 6:09counting night here on the fucking ball as to now, When you
- 6:14are running Jared, Hewitt. Freaking heart of the line,
- 6:18normal pilot heart on the line with fight.
- 6:20Guys, you want to take him to a bra bra with you don't get me
- 6:23wrong there 286 pounds and I'm assuming morels like to 70 on a
- 6:29good day. I saw inside Zone on that first
- 6:34drive because I got home. We got to have time and I look
- 6:37at Brian, said, look at the first two defensive drop and
- 6:39it's inside Zone and they're literally just getting pushed.
- 6:43And I'm sitting here in. Luckily I got Brian.
- 6:48Some of y'all don't have somebody like Brian that I can
- 6:51talk to my man. What the fuck we doing?
- 6:52You're just like, I don't know, I don't know why we're
- 6:55continuously letting undersized defensive tackles against teens
- 6:58or run the fucking ball. Yeah, I mean we got to balance
- 7:03this thing out, man. I have no problem with, I mean,
- 7:06obviously Kendricks. And Hewitt, as you said, I mean
- 7:10Pollard and he would sorry our guys that play hard and
- 7:17Especially Pollard. I love having on obvious passing
- 7:20downs. But, and like I said, I love you
- 7:23and all the work he puts in the program.
- 7:25But at some point, you've got to say this is our deficiency, we
- 7:29need to clean up this deficiency.
- 7:31And if you're seeing consistently, when teams are
- 7:34running the ball against you and your defensive tackles are not
- 7:38able to hold their Gap. And let them give the
- 7:43linebackers a chance to make a play.
- 7:45We'll get to the linebackers here shortly.
- 7:49Let the linebackers make a play. That's a problem and I'm just,
- 7:57I'm baffled that we're still this far into the season guys
- 8:02getting healthy. I don't know if after the game
- 8:05if this was subtweeting the staff or subtweeting, the fans,
- 8:09the Crawford saying No, I'm not hurt.
- 8:13Y'all can stop talking about that.
- 8:17Yeah, I don't know if that's the subtweet against the staff for
- 8:19not getting him in there more consistently or if that's
- 8:21subtweet. The fans were talking so much
- 8:23shit about it but whatever it is.
- 8:25I mean I feel like we're starting to see A locker room
- 8:31that is getting frustrated. And I'm not sure if it's with
- 8:35the expectations and just not following through, or if it's
- 8:38with the coaching staff, or it's both, but I'm starting to get
- 8:42like, 2018 Vibes here. So this team is way more
- 8:47talented in so much more calendar.
- 9:00It feels it feels like we don't have rudderless like every time
- 9:05we feel like we're writing the ship, we get a broadside from a
- 9:10team that has no business running with us like Liberty or
- 9:13like in earlier this year. Like wait, wait, it's true.
- 9:17Then it's true. And it's we're going into it and
- 9:21it's 7:00 now and essentially Five Seasons and we sit here and
- 9:26today a lot of Stuff you talked about, we didn't have juicer,
- 9:29but that's okay. We're still more talented than
- 9:33them. But what it is, is you just what
- 9:37I feel Brian, and I didn't feel this last week in Louisville,
- 9:43but I felt it this week at home, Iris eyeliner, fucking dead.
- 9:49Regardless of play that happens, our side lines are fucking dead
- 9:56and honestly wasn't like that out the gate this season.
- 9:58I felt like we started the season.
- 10:01I mean, we and they talked about it all off.
- 10:03Stays in the whole like, bring your own fucking juice.
- 10:05Like well, no one's bringing fucking juice consistently now,
- 10:07nobody knowing there's nobody, when their plays made last week,
- 10:13it was Dax, and that was on the field this week.
- 10:15And I know you're going to probably hit that at some point
- 10:17tonight as we talk and drink beer.
- 10:19And watch Clemson Notre Dame on our televisions here, but there
- 10:23was no juice. I saw Liberty, somebody popped
- 10:26out of bounds and you'd see somebody jump up in there, man.
- 10:28They're, they're fired up their pain, they're gone.
- 10:30They're head, we get a tackle, it's guys like huh?
- 10:34And when the cylons are dead, especially in it, what's going
- 10:39on? You know, with no fan.
- 10:41Then we're going to hit that. Don't don't believe me, we will
- 10:44because it's a lot of shit going on.
- 10:46You've got to motivate yourself. I hate to say this.
- 10:51Because last week, you felt like it was something there, right?
- 10:54You saw guys up, you've seen it earlier.
- 10:57Would you be opposed Brian to telling 20, guys?
- 11:01I don't care if we're at home. Go sit your ass in Miriam and
- 11:04watching game. You know what before we traveled
- 11:10to Louisville after the Wake debacle, we talked about how the
- 11:15Louisville travel Squad was going to be smaller.
- 11:18Yep. Because of some of the
- 11:19shenanigans on the sidelines. Yeah.
- 11:21And I think we saw a little bit better action against Louisville
- 11:25and you know, right? Right back to it with the home
- 11:27game and you've got pretty much everybody out there on the
- 11:30sideline and similar type situation this week.
- 11:34So mean, that's a frustrating look.
- 11:37Yeah, but I mean I'm going to go a step further than that.
- 11:42It wasn't just the sidelines man.
- 11:45Okay, I'm going to say mostly on defense, the defense doesn't
- 11:51have a Swagger a Killer Instinct dogs.
- 11:57I mean I feel like these players have the potential to be that
- 12:01but we're not. The coaching staff is not
- 12:04getting them. Hungry.
- 12:06Haven't? They haven't yet.
- 12:08When I, when I look at this defense play, I feel like we
- 12:10have good players that occasionally played good.
- 12:14But we can don't have dogs that are asserting the action.
- 12:18They're not out there saying we're going to fucking come at
- 12:22you. We're going to knock the shit
- 12:23out of you and at some point we're going to make a big play
- 12:28in turn this thing around but right now.
- 12:30No one is afraid of this defense does not strike fear in the
- 12:34heart of anyone. And I'm not just saying that
- 12:37from a Perspective of, you know, we don't have a cam Chancellor.
- 12:43I'm saying that as we don't do anything across the board that
- 12:49makes teams have to really scheme, hard to take away and we
- 12:54don't have enough Killer Instinct where we're kind of
- 12:58winning the fight before, you know, were even off the bus.
- 13:02Like there used to be something about playing a hokie defense
- 13:06that was in people's heads even before The first snap and we do
- 13:10not have that anymore. No, that's, that's the honest
- 13:14truth. Man, there were times again.
- 13:16Me and Brian roughly been fans since 1995 and We always the
- 13:23most talented know, we weren't honest truth, but you talked
- 13:28about the dogs and it's missing issue.
- 13:31There's missing that one vocal guy or that one guy, who just
- 13:34hit the living shit out of somebody and literally stand
- 13:38over them and say, fuck you. Fuck you, you do it again.
- 13:43I'm gonna hit you again and immediately it's a mentality
- 13:45thing. I think there are some guys on
- 13:47this defense it could be that. Absolutely.
- 13:51Why aren't they vocal though? Usually Brian you coach, some
- 13:56high school football. You were coached in college.
- 13:58You were coached in high school. Usually, there's a coach that
- 14:02will I'm not going to say override the head coach, but the
- 14:05kind of give the head, I'm assuming there's somebody that
- 14:07would get the head coach of huge Goose.
- 14:09Hey you, let Bob saying, what the fuck you What to say to them
- 14:12on that field and you don't say, hey, we don't do that.
- 14:15You let him go out there and get them fired up and get them
- 14:18feeling it. Yep.
- 14:20Am I right? Yeah, I mean had at him in
- 14:23Sydney that those those guys were Chris Scott and Daniel
- 14:26Park. Shout out to y'all.
- 14:29If you're listening obviously some of our listeners probably
- 14:33are very familiar. With Chris Scott said about that
- 14:36coaching down 757. Yes.
- 14:40Oh if y'all seen Krista give a pregame or a postgame, y'all
- 14:46know the intensity of he brings and he brought that same level
- 14:49of intensity when he was playing on the field, he was the leader
- 14:54out there, he was the dog, people followed him and I feel
- 14:59like we have Leaders by example, on the field.
- 15:03But we don't have those guys that are Assertive in like the
- 15:08take, your will tight tight players right now.
- 15:11And I'm not even say players, but just consistently having
- 15:14those performances like you don't see I haven't seen anybody
- 15:18take over game yet and I mean, let's go ahead while we're here
- 15:21while we're talking about players in general.
- 15:23I'm going to give a shout out to a Mari bar.
- 15:27Know who yes in week one was a guy that I considered more of a
- 15:33situational one down player that was Being asked to do more than
- 15:37he should. And now he is the best player on
- 15:41the defense at least he was today.
- 15:44He wants them dead and you talk about one down run, it wasn't
- 15:47even one down specifically, it was 1 and plus 6 yards.
- 15:52Yes, he would come in one in plus six yards, and that mf'er
- 15:57give he is a dog. And you know what?
- 15:59Maybe he is the type of guy that if somebody can get in his ear.
- 16:04Maybe it's 55 is on the sidelines.
- 16:06Now can tell him you got a bark at them.
- 16:10And if they say something to, you know, we got your back.
- 16:15Because he seems like a kind of got custard, a man, watching the
- 16:20pieces, I've watched he was all over the place and he was doing
- 16:24everything his, I look at him re-borrow right now, Brian and
- 16:29that motor in his body. He has 15 more pounds on him.
- 16:32He gets up to 260 265. And motherfuckers go on in the
- 16:37NFL and not only going to the NFL with how he looks and how an
- 16:41experience he is like right now, he's raw as hell and taking that
- 16:48many steps this this quickly. I mean, it's impressive.
- 16:51So I'm gonna give the shout out to him, but what I'm going to
- 16:54Pivot to now is just kind of the overall linebacker play today
- 17:00and I'm going to start with, not being aware of why Alan Tisdale
- 17:05was not. Ting this game.
- 17:08I don't know if this was a team rule situation because we didn't
- 17:12see him until after the first quarter or something else that
- 17:16happened or this was just what we didn't start Dax last week so
- 17:20we're getting him back in there. Like I have no idea what the The
- 17:24thought process was in this decision but it was bad.
- 17:29We looked better when he was in there.
- 17:32That's no doubt and that's not saying that we look good at any
- 17:36point on defense the entire day. Oh no, that's a unit but that's
- 17:41saying that The snaps that Alan Tisdale played.
- 17:45We looked better than the snaps he didn't I mean obviously root
- 17:48getting nicked, you know, early our second quarter that hurt
- 17:55borrow even came out for like I think a series when he got
- 17:59nicked up so okay Nathan is that's not involve.
- 18:03Also yeah. So but you know as I know fans
- 18:08love Dex Dex play. Too many steps a day between
- 18:11waking like what? He was out there.
- 18:14Way too much. And it showed.
- 18:20You know, for all his good abilities, bad abilities,
- 18:23whatever Dax still struggles, at making decisions fast enough and
- 18:27shedding blockers. It's the old Bud Foster
- 18:30statement His head on an aligned with his feet.
- 18:36Yeah, that's it's why so many times in and everybody's like,
- 18:40well bud, love that cool. But was forced to put decks in
- 18:42that situation. I don't think he felt
- 18:44comfortable Tisdale quite yet last year it.
- 18:47But we'll still here. This year would Dax be it
- 18:49backer, I don't know. But they also are always talking
- 18:53about guys who can't get this in this together.
- 18:57We'll never make it because if you can't make this in this
- 19:00think is one you fucked. Basically, they picked up that
- 19:11Pi flag, which was bullshit by the way.
- 19:14That should have been a flag. All right, anyway.
- 19:18Sorry, it's what happens when a lot of drinking beer.
- 19:21It's like, we're sitting in the we're, like, we're sitting in
- 19:23the same room together talking, but the one thing I will say
- 19:28about Dax especially last week, You missed his juice on the
- 19:33sidelines. Right.
- 19:36Yep. Definitely big play last week.
- 19:40Give them all the credit in the world and you whether you like
- 19:43him or hate him or whatever. He was legitimately less, he was
- 19:47in the game. He was literally cheering every
- 19:51fucking play from the sideline and you need kind of like that.
- 19:57So it's almost like, hey coach, don't let that let him go
- 20:01fucking chair. He's got two more years of
- 20:03Eligibility at school. He can still let him get those
- 20:08guys. We make a first down swinging
- 20:10the towel, when somebody makes a good play on defense, right?
- 20:12The sideline, clapping it up but But there's no juice.
- 20:16There is no urgency. And Brian, there's a reason when
- 20:22we were in our, I don't want to say Prime because I feel like I
- 20:26prime. I don't think we did it yet.
- 20:28We were in our 20s. If there is a reason Lane
- 20:33stadium was the most fucking feared face to play in the
- 20:36entire country. One Death Valley, both of them
- 20:42Morton Touchdown, Jesus more than the swamp warranty town or
- 20:46in the plains. and man, I think We're missing it as a team were
- 20:56missing staying there. We got to stay in there.
- 20:59It's almost a year now. Yep.
- 21:02Almost a year now East stands upper left near North End Zone
- 21:08where we can see the guys walk in.
- 21:10In the fields around us that the energy that was put out.
- 21:15We're missing. It is a team.
- 21:17Yeah, I mean as much as we talk about things they need to bring
- 21:20their own juice because I mean obviously we're not.
- 21:22The only fan base is dealing with this and yeah, we need to
- 21:27be able to create their own but you know, you're a fool.
- 21:30If you say that that's not missing from from this team,
- 21:34that was always an element of what.
- 21:38Playing in Lane stadium was about, was the crowd noise.
- 21:42The obviously the entrance just kind of that psychological
- 21:46element before the way the stadium was to noise to go to
- 21:53the opposing side line. Yeah, I mean we're missing that.
- 21:59Badly like across the board. So it's just And we're not the
- 22:06only theme. So I mean, you know, obviously
- 22:09every a lot of people are dealing with this.
- 22:10And so with the other hot, some other high-profile teams are
- 22:13dealing with the just as badly as we are in some cases.
- 22:16Shit, do Michigan. Last week.
- 22:18Michigan last week. I mean, we got Penn State this
- 22:21week. Who else lost one today?
- 22:25That that was at home. Hold on.
- 22:28I caliber team. There was a couple higher
- 22:31caliber team that lost today. We were not the only ones that's
- 22:34all. In that game they were down, you
- 23:20see? This.
- 23:50All right, your ham, it's tough to dictate terms.
- 23:53There's things that go on. Is there a game?
- 23:56And I don't care if it's next week.
- 23:57I don't care if it's two weeks from now on we play Pet.
- 23:59I don't care if it's next month. Is there a game where he goes
- 24:03bud? And just says, we're going to
- 24:05send six or seven every time I don't give a shit.
- 24:09I want you guys just to play without thinking, you know what?
- 24:13We get gas for some runs in front passes fucking because
- 24:17this isn't working. We today, we lost by a Thousand
- 24:19Cuts the pace Liberty play that. Good God Almighty, you could
- 24:23have served fucking Christmas dinner at the pace.
- 24:28They were playing today. Yep, they did.
- 24:31He say that. And all we had to do was have a
- 24:46couple fuck up drives and all of a sudden they're in the, in the
- 24:49driver's seat man. And that's exactly what
- 24:51happened. We had a couple drives where we
- 24:54went three and out. We had a couple drives where we
- 24:56settle for field goals, and that was the fucking difference in
- 24:58the game. It's very true and probably the
- 25:03biggest today. This is a actually got to hear
- 25:06this on the radio. We got a baseball.
- 25:09My wife took my oldest son over to the the grandparents a cuz I
- 25:16think sometimes me watching a she hadn't thought this all
- 25:19after this week thing. I hadn't had to sit a chance to
- 25:23sit and watch a game by myself and take notes in like three
- 25:28weeks because my mom was in town.
- 25:30One time, we had to go to the neighbors one time, and there
- 25:33were some other things going on with that.
- 25:35So today is kind of like, she, let me have him on and I'm
- 25:38sitting here and I pull up in the driveway and I'm listening
- 25:41to the laser and burn up on the radio and it's eight seconds
- 25:44left behind. Jalen Holston has just broke a
- 25:4712-yard gain to get inside the fiber.
- 25:50At the 4-yard line, there is a timeout left.
- 25:52There is eight seconds, and I'm sitting there.
- 25:57I'm sitting there Brian. I'm like you run ball.
- 26:02You, you, you just got a massive gain.
- 26:04This is the strength of your team that you have.
- 26:08Probably the best offensive line I near say since 2003.
- 26:14When Jake Grove in the, I probably agree with that.
- 26:28And we were on a goddamn fade, you played football, how long
- 26:33does it take to set up a fade route?
- 26:41Seconds. And I'm sitting here in the car
- 27:03listening and I'm like, why the fuck?
- 27:08Why? A couple times in this game.
- 27:52You're running it there. When we went to tied up over all
- 27:57manages. These key moments seem to always
- 28:02never work in our favor. And while we're at Key moments,
- 28:05not working in our favor, Let's go ahead and discuss.
- 28:11The end of the game. Oh,
- 28:44what do you want? You obviously had the fucking
- 29:07right, you did in there cuz you blocked the fucking kit.
- 29:10Number two, perfectly right now. In my opinion, the the best
- 29:15coach on this staff has been shy, best.
- 29:20Trust the best coach on your staff this season.
- 29:32Live recording, guys, this is what you get.
- 29:34If you guys are wondering what we stopped, her name, 50-yarder
- 29:42steam because there's nobody in the middle of the field.
- 29:46Yes. James Chavez has been the bus
- 29:49fucking coach on this team but by a pretty big measure in some
- 29:56cases and You didn't trust him in that situation.
- 30:01Yeah, I'm called a timeout. You supposedly?
- 30:04I guess whispered it and then just at the last second yelled
- 30:08it. I just how about this, trust
- 30:13your best coach to get the right guys, on the field and then
- 30:18built a kicker that's kicking a 59 + yard field goal.
- 30:23It's not it's not it's not rocket science man.
- 30:26And so, after that, Horror fit
- 30:59horrific situation, we're scrambling because we think we
- 31:04won the game, we forget the down and distance, and we put a
- 31:08prevent defense in like, we're expecting a Hail Mary.
- 31:14Now I'm down distance time o'clock.
- 31:16Yeah. It's been both.
- 31:17It's a combination of the two. Like you've got fourth and six.
- 31:24With eight seconds left and you've got your your Hail Mary
- 31:30team out there and they do exactly what you think they're
- 31:37going to do. They throw a quick out, get out
- 31:40of bounds, seven and a half yards.
- 31:44Now, all of a sudden 259 ER becomes a 51 and they roll out
- 31:49there fucking Rambo kicker and he Nails it.
- 31:52Nell down the pike and I'm surprised that no one was in his
- 31:58ear. To change that call.
- 32:02Because true apparently, no one else knew the situation, just
- 32:06like him. I just, it baffles me that.
- 32:13I mean, we deserve to lose based on those two calls those who
- 32:17called headlong, and that's after the clown show of coaching
- 32:21that we did up to that point. That's true, it's very true
- 32:25because you sit here and you sit at, and I'm sitting here, it's a
- 32:2859 yarder. I mean, think time that I'm
- 32:30like, this is a six-year feel this guy's They're doing this by
- 32:34chance. He kit has the kick of his life
- 32:39of his life and he Nails it. I'll just sit there and said
- 32:44cool because if he misses it you're sitting here and you've
- 32:46got your going to because that's a 59-yard or that's from the 39.
- 32:51You actually have a chance to run one play downfield.
- 32:56Like, don't waste time out. Screw you didn't use it early
- 32:59enough again. I mean, we did a good job.
- 33:12That we actually today, stop them on third or fourth down
- 33:17because those some bitches all damn day.
- 33:20Brian. I mean, we're I'm you're looking
- 33:22here and you're kind of like, we talked about it.
- 33:25How big of a key it is that we've got to start getting
- 33:28stuff. We didn't get any motherfuckin
- 33:30stops today. We get none.
- 33:33Basically Braun the team today. They were 10 of 17, on third and
- 33:37fourth down. I'd like to be 10 of Nineteen,
- 33:42we were 6 of 12. so, you sit here and it's just like, again,
- 33:49the whole question is, Your point, the best coach.
- 33:53He's going to put the best on the field.
- 33:55If you look at the way that was set up, it was a perfect inside
- 33:58a little move. The two outside guys did not
- 34:01charge. They literally got up and
- 34:02stopped because they're thought wonders.
- 34:04If they block it, yes, we're there to make the play.
- 34:09We're going to make and it was set up.
- 34:12Well, they knew that from that distance that the trajectory of
- 34:17the kick is going to be lower than normal.
- 34:20So you need to get pressure up the It's not going to be
- 34:22something where you're to have much success getting pressure on
- 34:25the edge. You have a lot more higher
- 34:27probability of blocking it by going up, the middle, Peru, it
- 34:31was perfectly done and returned for a touchdown and then no, it
- 34:35wasn't at that point. What little life I had after
- 34:41watching that game got sucked. I was like we're losing this one
- 34:45man and we deserve to your like regardless what happens?
- 34:49I mean I was already at the point after When they, when we
- 34:53had to give up a touchdown in order to stay in this game, I
- 34:56was already at the point winter lose.
- 34:59I'm railing about this thing. And then that hat, like, so,
- 35:04It's just like I was already like past the point of this
- 35:09being acceptable, you path. We're going to rescue like
- 35:13there's no rest. Somebody pass that, but I would
- 35:16have been happy that we won, but I wouldn't have been happy about
- 35:19how we won, and I would have bitched about it to the end of
- 35:22the Earth. And then that happened.
- 35:24So we get to do double bitching here, which is not anything.
- 35:28I want to do, but I feel like it's something we need to do.
- 35:31It's both therapeutic because we get our feelings out.
- 35:34And we get to actually address some of the things that are
- 35:41going on that we think probably long-term need to be looked at.
- 35:46It's true and Brawn you talk about long-term and we've been
- 35:50chewing on Thursdays podcast that the pickup of Jaden Keller.
- 35:54And and after what's happened this year we're four and three,
- 36:00you know, North Carolina game we can ride off to bad losses.
- 36:04You can't favor flirtation, you can't.
- 36:09And you don't think right now, the big guy that it feels like
- 36:14that we might lose. And it's kind of coming down
- 36:18because he's getting more and more interest.
- 36:20I don't know if this kid has grown or just his tape has
- 36:24become more and more accessible. I mean can and Bun is starting
- 36:32to pick up offers and more interest from some of your big
- 36:35dogs. USC's, one of the big ones, you
- 36:42don't think. Beat be honest, bro.
- 36:46Let me ask you this. You are You know what?
- 36:52Let's go big, you're linking Riley.
- 36:54You love Cannon boom as a left tackle and he had offered him
- 36:58yet but you see link, you see Cannon bun.
- 37:01What he does. You see his body type?
- 37:04He do good in Oklahoma probably right.
- 37:07We think Lincoln Riley and their coaching staff is walking in and
- 37:12him they're saying we might lose one or two games.
- 37:16A year in the team that you have committed to is losing to
- 37:20Liberty. I mean right now let's go a step
- 37:24further than that, alright? Right now to G5 schools in our
- 37:28own State can - recruit has mmm. True on top of that.
- 37:39Recent history are two closest ACC division Rivals can -
- 37:44recruit us. We ain't even see.
- 37:47Yep. It's a - Barrel because right
- 37:55now, the way we've looked is it's bad on the paper cuz when
- 38:02you ask the kid wants to go play for four and three school,
- 38:05that's losing the G5 schools that can't get their shit
- 38:09together. That it comes look in depth on
- 38:12offense that defensively. What the fuck are you trying to
- 38:16do? Yeah, it's easy.
- 38:19It's easy to - recruiters right now, so fucking easy and then
- 38:24you talk about the Baylor flirtation and you know, some
- 38:27people say now well he ain't gonna never get another Jeep.
- 38:30Another P5 job if he gets fired from Tech.
- 38:34Yeah, but kids can't see that kids.
- 38:38See? Why don't, why was he thinking
- 38:40about leaving all? She's thinking about leaving and
- 38:42going down there. You know, it's different when
- 38:47you're 18 because we've been A team of four and me and Brian
- 38:50actually had some funny conversations because the night
- 38:54looks like the lights are off. Now, Brian.
- 38:55I think they just had a few people over.
- 38:57Maybe they heard me following almost this close to being like
- 39:05y'all out of town to Pops a little Rowdy over there.
- 39:13Huh? Well I can hear them.
- 39:15No, not Rowdy. Those kids couldn't be rowdy.
- 39:20They're they're too nice, a kid, man.
- 39:22They're not, they're not 17 and 18 years old where we were wild
- 39:29for, can get out and do what a bunch of stupid shit.
- 39:33Although I think about the way that's Robbie's boy, you see
- 39:38that? Yeah.
- 39:39For now, good for him live again, guys, live podcasting,
- 39:45Cornell pal, 17, for Clemson, who was recruited.
- 39:48Goodbye, Virginia Tech. Our friend, Robbie actually
- 39:57coached him in high school. Robbie has met Frank.
- 40:00He's met but he's met Robbie is probably met more D1,
- 40:05Collegiate, football coaches than most people.
- 40:12So he's the sort of guy I'm sure that has heard - recruiting
- 40:29Those coaches are here. It's true.
- 40:34It's true. It's true.
- 40:36So you know, it's one of those things you just sit here and
- 40:42it's just That's a touchdown. That's the first play, by the
- 40:48way, I wish one day in my dreams, see my old NCAA games
- 40:56when you're starting quarterback goes down.
- 40:58Who's the 99? The 98 comes in to replace him,
- 41:08man. I mean, you used to You can
- 41:15pretty much load up attribute points across the board, but
- 41:19they finally said, hey, we're not going to be able to allow
- 41:21that because, you know, well guess what?
- 41:24They need. If they come from, you can't
- 41:26change your fucking format because clearly, if you're a
- 41:29elite level School, the number one quarterback, even with
- 41:32someone in front of him for a couple of years will likely I
- 41:35yeah, I'm it there. That church money, man.
- 41:42Who's that always talks about the church money?
- 41:47Yeah. Okey pharmacist.
- 41:51Shout-out hokey, pharmacist for Hunger.
- 41:53Funny tweets about the church. Fundage for the Clemson Tigers.
- 42:01But it's true. It's damn.
- 42:03True actually should be the running back for my 49ers and
- 42:12all the stuff he does. Good folks.
- 42:15If y'all can y'all not tell that we were few drinks deep I don't
- 42:19know I don't I feel the shot for we started tonight just I
- 42:23haven't drank all day because in baseball come in and watch the
- 42:26game, I have to do some things afterwards.
- 42:28I have to go up in my attic where 75 degree day in the Attic
- 42:32turns. 95 you doubted me more face for certain things.
- 42:39Yeah, I started with beer during the game.
- 42:42We did records mere dinner breakfast for dinner, had eggs,
- 42:47bacon and sausage, gravy and biscuits and have had some
- 42:54mimosas with dinner. It back to beer.
- 43:01Lord Rama is like you were on a date.
- 43:04I'm going to assume right? Hold on.
- 43:06Let me assume you do not smash beers from 12 till dinner.
- 43:11Now, I wasn't pounding today. This is more of a II things
- 43:16going on. So I was drinking beer while I
- 43:17was doing stuff. Watching the game throwing stuff
- 43:20at the television, you know, we Simpson, this is an old-school
- 43:24Because by the way, believe it or not, in Brian, and I younger
- 43:28days if you had told me, well, Brian started.
- 43:31Making beer at lunch, he drank beers all afternoon and then he
- 43:34started pounding, mimosas at dinnertime.
- 43:36And then he switched back to beard.
- 43:38Be like and yo what y'all should grow is one time.
- 43:46Well, story of remember that time me your roommate and Dom.
- 43:52Yep. And the cooler.
- 43:56Oh yeah. 2002, I think it was three.
- 44:06I think it was 3, 2003. Basically you're playing those
- 44:10years because I'm not at Longwood yet.
- 44:12Now we can do. Here's for y'all as Warfarin
- 44:15back home. Dog in a little while.
- 44:16But basically, we're like, 14 can make some fucking jungle
- 44:22juice. We've got a cooler here.
- 44:25Brian has obviously someone 21 on his team and his roommates a
- 44:29here, let's do this shit. Shout out Jaybird.
- 44:33He was, he was my go-to. Fast motherfucker to right?
- 44:42Oh yeah. But anyway, we decided to go
- 44:45make a damn vat of jungle juice in a fucking cooler and take it
- 44:51over to Brian's athletic house. I don't still try to remember,
- 44:56because we're sitting in your room for what, probably two
- 44:59hours. Just fucking pounding beers.
- 45:02Here's our Theory. So we were like, you know, we
- 45:08already have this liquor. We could go to the party, wait
- 45:14in line for drinks, or we could bring this cooler stash it
- 45:18somewhere and just go and refill at our Leisure.
- 45:24So we said yes we will carry this cooler halfway across
- 45:28campus in order to have unlimited refills for the night.
- 45:33Pretty much But getting an across can this because it was
- 45:37like a 22 mile hike. We had lived across the football
- 45:41field and into frat Circle which It can be a nightmare and then
- 45:50up the hill to where the TAC house was.
- 45:52So, ultimately, ultimately, we got, it was an interesting night
- 46:00and we drank all of it. She just about all of it.
- 46:04I'm pretty sure there wasn't a whole lot.
- 46:17Well, I'm sure we gave some girls and we're trying to get
- 46:22some girls and a fifth and then a mix in this massive.
- 46:32A it's like we're having to walk a who I know domme had a carry
- 46:37it because being you set we meet you.
- 46:39And Brian were very intelligent about that we sat there and
- 46:42Saddam you gotta carry this shit across campus and because Damas,
- 46:4721. Because if you can call it what
- 46:49they can't see Jack shit. We get caught with it.
- 46:53Well, you and brown wouldn't go to jail our good because I
- 46:58didn't go to Cindy was a different Beast though, back
- 47:02then, like, it was so hit-or-miss.
- 47:05Like sometimes, like, especially during like, Greek week or
- 47:08something. Oh, good wolf across campus, and
- 47:12it was just a free-for-all like whatever you did, you know.
- 47:17It is what it is but on random nights, like they would be like
- 47:21yeah, you got to pour it out. And after we spent that much
- 47:26money in that much time and we're hauling it halfway across
- 47:28campus. We were not risking it.
- 47:31Getting poured out know, we weren't a lot of time.
- 47:42This is going to be labeled reminiscing.
- 47:45Yeah. Again for y'all who might be
- 47:47first-time listener for y'all? Listen.
- 47:50Me and Brad Siegel have known each other.
- 47:52Since middle school. I'm 37 Brian's 36.
- 47:57We've known each other more than 20 years.
- 48:00This is just one of many stories.
- 48:04So, and we've done some dumb shit around each other.
- 48:08Some things will not be mentioned.
- 48:12Maybe our wives are the only other people that know it if
- 48:15they weren't there. That's probably it.
- 48:18So, anyway, run again, - recruiting is going to be alive
- 48:23for us and there's gonna be some guys like Cannon Boonies.
- 48:26Starting to get the interest, probably DJ Harvey more than a
- 48:30few other. Guys, are going to get that push
- 48:33from potentially bigger schools. And you know, we sit here and we
- 48:39know the coaching staff Is what it is in Brian.
- 48:45Let me ask this. Your Justin Fuente, just some
- 48:53lives out. Next to the golf course.
- 48:55We know that we've heard that before, he's going to wake up
- 48:57tomorrow morning. You got to go in Sunday's a prep
- 49:00day for them. Obviously.
- 49:03He's going to, I can't remember exactly where it is, but I'm
- 49:05going to assume for 60 60 and he's turning to merryman.
- 49:09He's on parking at parking lot where you can see Lane Stadium.
- 49:12She score Boise drill field, you see all that fun stuff, and he's
- 49:19a long to his office and he's on that door up.
- 49:21He's going to sit down. It's probably about 6 or 7 a.m.
- 49:27Brian your him. What do you do tomorrow?
- 49:30Because unless he's an idiot, what you might be?
- 49:36He know. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:39I don't think he's an idiot in the terms of reading people, but
- 49:43I think he knows that this loss has probably pissed.
- 49:47The fan base off his lot and potentially lost his team, a
- 49:50little bit, a little bit. Is controlled by someone else
- 50:04but if I'm him, I am evaluating myself and my staff to a degree
- 50:11that I've never done this far in my career.
- 50:15I'm taking a long hard look at situational play calling.
- 50:21I'm taking a long hard look at the preparation that we have.
- 50:25And why we are consistently having poor starts against
- 50:29inferior competition and then having to play either from
- 50:32behind or neck and neck with these companies with these
- 50:36opponents. I'm looking at why we don't have
- 50:42the energy on the sidelines and who in the coaching staff?
- 50:45Laugh. Can bring some more juice.
- 50:50I'm looking at who we have in the booth and who we have on the
- 50:53sideline. Okay.
- 50:56I'm taking a look at changing play called duties on offense.
- 51:02Well, bond me, and you have been calling it for a while now,
- 51:07we're not do this. It's not a shocking thing.
- 51:10Because today, it's the same, it's the same All right, Mom,
- 51:15it's the same shit. It's not the entire game.
- 51:18It's I to say this, Believe It or Not Berlin from bronstein
- 51:22spring break, or Nielsen is actually want to fucking Step
- 51:25Up. Or Scott loffler or my cocaine
- 51:29Hood. But called please back in and
- 51:32y'all, I'm almost tempted, like Brian by the way.
- 51:35You know, I had a shot before hand looking like over there and
- 51:40just about nine again, but it is a step up what it is now.
- 51:50And I think maybe if we Maybe if we weren't for Virginia Tech
- 51:55fans and we didn't pay attention, we wouldn't notice
- 51:58it. What it is now is the
- 52:00situational terrible ass calls today, and we mentioned it
- 52:05earlier was at the end of the first half, You don't run a
- 52:12fade, you run the fucking ball because that is your strength.
- 52:17If they stop you grate it angled take eight fucking seconds, run
- 52:21a ball, you call your damn time at you got to put you feel, you
- 52:23know. But here's the thing about that,
- 52:25you get in the end zone, you're up 10 in the momentum is
- 52:27completely shifted. Their down two scores, not one
- 52:31the other one and Brian, this pissed you off and you're
- 52:35sitting here and you're telling me unless you're fucking going
- 52:39for it with them. Fuck, are you doing calling
- 52:41that? Play.
- 52:43Are you talking about the quarterback lead on third down
- 52:45and six? Yes.
- 52:48The one we just got. Yeah so if you were not going to
- 52:53go for it on fourth down, you do not call that play. in that
- 52:59situation, because They knew the defense was hurting at this
- 53:07point. They knew it.
- 53:10They had consistently not been able to get off the field unless
- 53:12they were forcing attorney. Yep.
- 53:15So you've got to have in your mind that you need to get a
- 53:20first down. Yep.
- 53:23And if you want to get a first down, its third down, and six,
- 53:27you got a call to play to get you the first down.
- 53:29And if you don't call a play, that's going to definitely get
- 53:31your first down, you've got to have in your mind that you're
- 53:33going for it on Fourth. and, You know, we've talked about it in a
- 53:41lot of the games this year, we consistently leave points on the
- 53:46field when we're having good drives.
- 53:50Yep. And we did it again.
- 53:53Today, between the drive just before half the drive were
- 53:58discussing here and then you couple that with opening the
- 54:04game and then opening the second half with Just execution flaws
- 54:11in a couple calls here or there that were questionable that gave
- 54:16that offense the ball back really quickly so they could
- 54:20score. I mean, you can put those things
- 54:24together. It's problematic, man, it's
- 54:26problematic. It's been a family problem at
- 54:28it, you know, the other piece is especially with the, you know,
- 54:34the opening drive. And it's again, it's why it's a
- 54:36step up from where we were the Play on like third and 7 of that
- 54:41open and drivers right. Play, that was a poor excuse it
- 54:45wasn't, it was a poor executed play, because if he hits cable
- 54:49Smith, you looked at that. Play, after I told you, we
- 54:52talked about it. If he had set play, the Caleb,
- 54:54Caleb has 20 yards because that's always vacated.
- 54:57Because we essentially, we essentially ran off to safety
- 55:01when out the corner from that spot.
- 55:04But the issue is, it's always the worst times.
- 55:07And somebody say, well, if it's the worst times and you're not
- 55:10in a good position when the game anyway, well for years upon
- 55:14years, we saw it times where it was just bad play calling all
- 55:17around. So again, we put the Step Up
- 55:20where it's probably 85% the plays are okay.
- 55:24But what we see and again, what we see is fans and what you see
- 55:28is a person who played is the plays that are W terrible calls
- 55:34are at the worst times if people called her, what, at the at the
- 55:38opportune times, then it's okay. Sometimes you sometimes the best
- 55:43offensive play callers. You see in the country and on
- 55:47the NFL, they'll do that shit. Just to make you make.
- 55:50You think about it, right? Like, you got to think about
- 55:52this because I'll do that when y'all are thinking thinking
- 55:55about it, no doubt man. And I think another thing that
- 55:59we need to look at is you know, we talk about the situational
- 56:06awareness feel like is always lacking but you know, sometimes
- 56:12I just don't feel like we have a plan. and that we like, for
- 56:21example, first play of the game is a jet Suite.
- 56:26I still like that that right there.
- 56:29Just felt like Okay, this is what we're doing this, this is
- 56:35what we're doing. They just March the fucking ball
- 56:37down the field and scored on us. And your first call is a jet
- 56:42Suite. How many Curtis if, if there's
- 56:49two plays that as a defensive coordinator for Liberty, if I'm
- 56:54sitting making a game plan of say, what, what should I need to
- 56:58take away? Or what does this all offensive
- 57:01tendency? Give me two plays that would
- 57:05that they would think to take away now.
- 57:06I'm not many. It's outside Zone yet, please.
- 57:10Okay. So either.
- 57:12Hey, listen, hey, that would sit out there and
- 57:29say, you know what I'm gonna do We're going to run Jet Sweep
- 57:33fake. And you what I'm going to do,
- 57:36I'm either going to run a quarterback.
- 57:37Sweep on the opposite side or or if you're really fucking
- 57:41creative you're really fun. Creative.
- 57:44We're gonna run this. Fake Jets will eat tendons.
- 57:46Go wrong. Like he's going to run.
- 57:48I'm going to let the left the tight end and the left tackle
- 57:51sweep out. I'm gonna throw a damn screen
- 57:54and there's not going to be anybody on that side of the
- 57:56field. Yep.
- 57:59Right. And I mean we we ran our
- 58:01quarterback to death today and that bothered me too just
- 58:05because it's effective, like he's the quarterback, the entire
- 58:10offense runs through him, he can't just keep slamming him
- 58:15into the defense, the entire game and what bothers me more
- 58:19than that is that it's almost like our play.
- 58:22Caller does not trust Blackshear or Holston to get Yards for them
- 58:29and no point. Did our offensive coordinator?
- 58:32Do anything to get them comfortable in the game plan
- 58:35today. It was all well, we don't have
- 58:38Herbert a couple early plays to our running backs were - despite
- 58:44one of them being on the coordinator for calling a
- 58:47dumbass reverse when we didn't. We weren't really at that point
- 58:54yet we're that type of play call should come into play and then
- 58:58it gets blown up and then you completely go away from your
- 59:02running backs until the drive just before half-time and Then
- 59:06you come out in the second half and he really kind of go away
- 59:09from them more or less. Again, I think we had one or two
- 59:12drives where we finally got Blackshear involved getting some
- 59:16carries there in the second half but It was kind of too little,
- 59:20too late, like the running backs never got in Rhythm.
- 59:23And the quarterbacks, the quarterback ended up having to
- 59:27put the entire damn offense on his back.
- 59:30And he did if he did, did he And it seems like we've seen him
- 1:00:32three yards from him and make a move and get 15 yards.
- 1:00:36So you know, I think that's just one of those weird things Brian
- 1:00:42but I won't say this run. You talk about what and I bring
- 1:00:45I want the question to you. What does he do?
- 1:00:48Tomorrow morning get tomorrow morning when I went that long
- 1:00:52yet? Yeah, not yet.
- 1:00:55Yeah, but I cracked another beer.
- 1:00:56If you didn't hear it all I've walked over to the beer fridge
- 1:00:59there cuz I'm going to eventually probably be smashed
- 1:01:02when I go upstairs and my wife's been probably kick me or
- 1:01:04something or little ones in the wake up at 4 and I'm not going
- 1:01:07to be able to go back to Leaps, I'm just going to wake up drunk.
- 1:01:11Hey everybody.
- 1:01:28I don't think so. We did so well for so many years
- 1:01:42into our a modernized defense that can help protect the face
- 1:01:47mask that can help prevent huge scores quickly.
- 1:01:52It's going to be things like that, that are going to happen.
- 1:01:56So, you know, I can't put any of the blame on those guys, but
- 1:02:03then I said, Entire staff and say you've got
- 1:02:34to do this. so if your if your wit are you looking at making a
- 1:02:42change, Oh, head coaching laws? Yes.
- 1:02:49Oh god. Well, bra know I said it a
- 1:02:54couple weeks ago that my, my confidence in the head coach had
- 1:02:57faded and it's still there. The confidence is still faded.
- 1:03:05and I think what it's even more after today, is the light at the
- 1:03:08end of the tunnel where in 2016 We legitimately felt like this
- 1:03:16is we got the right guy, we've got the right system.
- 1:03:20We're going to compete with Clemson and a few years.
- 1:03:22Once everybody's here. 2017, it didn't change.
- 1:03:27It didn't. Yeah, and even in 2018, with all
- 1:03:31that stuff, while we're playing a lot of young guys, last year,
- 1:03:34it came down, but then Henning, kind of brought it back up.
- 1:03:38But after that two losses this year is like Honestly, I said, I
- 1:03:51feel like God's telling us he's not the right person.
- 1:03:59Yeah. I mean,
- 1:04:16Consistently playing for ACC championships.
- 1:04:20I'm not saying we have to be Clemson, I'd like to get there
- 1:04:22but I'm not saying we have to be that but we need to be at least
- 1:04:26what we were kind of in the Logan Thomas years.
- 1:04:30Okay specially especially the David Wilson Logan Thomas you,
- 1:04:35okay. We need to be there if we're not
- 1:04:39there consistently to me. That's a problem.
- 1:04:43And now I don't think necessarily it's one thing.
- 1:04:46Or another. But, you know, everyone in the
- 1:04:49offseason and everyone especially with what the 2020
- 1:04:52class looked like was bitching about the recruiting.
- 1:04:56I don't like the recruiting either, but I would much rather
- 1:04:59have bad recruiting than the shit that we had that happen
- 1:05:02today. Yep.
- 1:05:04And I don't necessarily think one is byproduct of the other
- 1:05:06because regardless of the recruiting we had better overall
- 1:05:10players on the field today and we did not play them in a
- 1:05:14whether its execution by the players.
- 1:05:16Hers, or the coach is putting them in place.
- 1:05:18We did not play well enough to win that game.
- 1:05:20We didn't know and that's a coaching thing and that's a
- 1:05:22coaching piece that has nothing to do with recruiting notes.
- 1:05:25Oh, It's not just the recruiting that were pointing the finger at
- 1:05:29here. I can live with a top 30 class.
- 1:05:34If we're over playing that hand, you can't live with this shit.
- 1:05:38When you're when you're putting guys in horrible parking
- 1:05:41positions making guys do things they shouldn't fucking do.
- 1:05:45Yeah. And then again there's no
- 1:05:48there's no excuse for a team with the talent that we have to
- 1:05:52lose to Liberty. And to lose to wake this season.
- 1:05:55It's true. Now that's that's, that's where
- 1:05:58I'm at. So, where I'm at is that If
- 1:06:02someone said, if someone is looking at moving on from when I
- 1:06:06would say, I'm fine with that but but I'll throw with caveat
- 1:06:11in there. Problems are not just going to
- 1:06:15go away with the new head coach. Nope.
- 1:06:17Because for the last few months. Yes.
- 1:06:36Where our expectations are in where our investments.
- 1:06:39So, I'm with everyone that if everyone wants to fire Fuente
- 1:06:45and that's what went back up, decides to go with thumbs up,
- 1:06:49okay. But I need to see a plan both
- 1:06:54from who you going to hire how much you going to pay them?
- 1:06:57Are you going to pay enough to actually get a higher?
- 1:07:00That is worthy to change coaches for and once you get them in the
- 1:07:05damn building, are you going to invest in the program enough for
- 1:07:08them to have success? I think that's a reasonable
- 1:07:12request if you're going to make the choice to fire a coach
- 1:07:15because if you don't have a damn game plan of what happens next,
- 1:07:20I mean, we have to recalibrate our expectations, we might as
- 1:07:23well, let him go out. So it's crazy but no bra.
- 1:07:57No, I'm with you. he was, but
- 1:09:36students have said, But still great.
- 1:10:34Fucking that's what college football, I'm stopping right
- 1:10:37now. That's what college football's
- 1:10:39about that. That for folks, it is 11:44 on
- 1:10:46the East Coast. That is what college football is
- 1:10:49all about. You rush to feel when you take
- 1:10:52down number one, you rush it. You gotta love the energy, man.
- 1:10:59You gotta love it. There is no emotion, like that.
- 1:11:17Professional football. There's no prevention like that.
- 1:11:20In just about any for both, the exception of March Madness.
- 1:11:23There's not. If and we have been in that
- 1:11:26dude, in Leeds, we have been in that, that's what makes this
- 1:11:34sport in my opinion. And if you're a professional
- 1:11:37football 101 because a fantasy because of all that, that's
- 1:11:40fine. You're seeing the elite of the
- 1:11:42elite. Do a sport that's great, but
- 1:11:46that right there and you're seeing it right now, the green,
- 1:11:49right? The Green Way up.
- 1:11:52Oh yeah you don't see that. Regardless of
- 1:13:08how you feel about this years ago and I can't find the clip.
- 1:13:13And I wish you could be out there by the way, give him
- 1:13:15credit. I'm seeing more masking that
- 1:13:17crowd than expected. The hedges.
- 1:14:14When we started this podcast, it's a Virginia Tech podcast.
- 1:14:18It is a college football podcast.
- 1:14:19So that's why we do different games every week.
- 1:14:25And if you set in any of those stadiums, and I've got a list.
- 1:14:28The cocktail party was today. I want to get in that at least
- 1:14:31one time before I die, because apparently literally die because
- 1:14:37it's nuts and they don't break out in fist fights.
- 1:14:41But that's what it's all about in.
- 1:14:44I'm ready for next year and hopefully this shit gets over
- 1:14:46with me and you can get into Lane stadium in Jump.
- 1:14:51Umph. And uh, okay.
- 1:14:54IES Hokies and maybe just maybe we can stick it in.
- 1:15:02Well, I'm not going to come here and
- 1:15:38you know what I'm going to do, I'm going to go on social media
- 1:15:41and say I wanted to come Virginia Tech because the
- 1:15:44tradition of what Frank Beamer built and what Bud Foster and
- 1:15:49that staff built those staffs in the 90s 9019.
- 1:15:53I'm going to come here. But you know what, he wouldn't
- 1:15:55do anything to invest in football.
- 1:15:58That's what I do if I want it. Now brought on you said
- 1:16:02summerlee gonna have some have some big dick.
- 1:16:04Energy to pull that off is only probably a handful of guys that
- 1:16:09I think would want the job that can pull some shit off like
- 1:16:12that. It'll be interesting to see if
- 1:16:14we can Sweeten, the pot enough booth on the direct compensation
- 1:16:22side and on the program investment side to make them
- 1:16:28see. Virginia Tech is the place they
- 1:16:31want to be. Obviously there's some alums
- 1:16:36that I think would potentially Look at it with a little softer
- 1:16:42side, especially from the direct compensation perspective.
- 1:16:47It's true. But I don't know if they will
- 1:16:51have the chops to pull off the program investment side of the
- 1:16:57coin there. Again, they might be able to,
- 1:17:02it's just I feel like we need to have that level of investment in
- 1:17:07Pride regardless of having a coach coming come in and say
- 1:17:11this is what I need because at this point they should fucking
- 1:17:15know and honestly Fuentes told them he's not doing a good
- 1:17:20enough job of probably pushing it but I think he's certainly
- 1:17:25told them. I need this to be as successful
- 1:17:27as you want us to be and I think honestly he does because he's
- 1:17:33not a natural. Router.
- 1:17:35And he's not a guy that is driving.
- 1:17:38A lot of direct donations based on some of the product we put
- 1:17:43out the last few years so he does need All the help he can
- 1:17:50get on the financial front, whether it's, you know, new
- 1:17:54facilities, whether it's actual recruiting dollars, whether it's
- 1:17:58more money, for his staff, to build that out.
- 1:18:01I still can't get over the like, we couldn't come up 100K to get
- 1:18:06Odom, like that, that's still blowing my mind.
- 1:18:12So. You know, at some point, we need
- 1:18:17to address everything. I mean I know I definitely think
- 1:18:23coaching is a problem, but coaching is also bearing the
- 1:18:28brunt of the scapegoat here as well.
- 1:18:32So until we change a lot of things about the program, I
- 1:18:35don't think that we're going to see a significant bump in an
- 1:18:40output on the field. That mean, that's just, that's
- 1:18:44just how I see it again. But I want to see a plan that
- 1:18:52goes beyond, just bringing new guy in, because I need to hear
- 1:18:57who that guy is going to be and what the plan is to invest in
- 1:19:00the program. So that person has success until
- 1:19:03I hear that I'm still like, okay well cool.
- 1:19:07But you know, if we hire another guy and he ends up going 6 and 7
- 1:19:12are going, are we going to be doing this again in?
- 1:19:13Years and that's what you don't want to get into.
- 1:19:17And I think maybe the thing about Justin's olympe that
- 1:19:19happened in 2016. If you had walked in and seeing
- 1:19:22what was going on behind the scenes, it should have been day
- 1:19:26one pushing, we need these new positions but he I don't think
- 1:19:30he's that type of guy. I think he felt like well
- 1:19:32they'll see it, they'll see it right?
- 1:19:34They'll see that. We're going to probably we're
- 1:19:36going to hit some hard times and we did and now but it's more on
- 1:19:42you as a leader. Or as the coach of the football
- 1:19:45team, it's like we need x y z to get there.
- 1:19:48Yeah, we had a great first season because we have some
- 1:19:50really good players here, but we need X Y & Z to stay here.
- 1:19:53And for him, unfortunately, it took until 2020 January of 2020
- 1:19:58for all this to happen. Chaos breaks out.
- 1:20:00You don't get to put the full plan in place, and then somebody
- 1:20:07Was it fish? The be fish that made the point
- 1:20:09that he looked up that in 15 years ago we had one of the
- 1:20:14highest paid staffs in the country.
- 1:20:15And today, we're like 37. I feel like you put that out
- 1:20:18there a few weeks ago. Yeah, I believe so.
- 1:20:21I think you're right. Shut up and Fish on Twitter
- 1:20:24there. Yeah, he talked about it and
- 1:20:28let's go back and do a little history lesson here.
- 1:20:31We've talked about it before with Frank, Beamer having a
- 1:20:35flirtation with UNC Yeah, I'm coming back and saying, you
- 1:20:40know, if if you're going to keep me, we need to do this and the
- 1:20:43big part of that was paying. But Foster paying the assistants
- 1:20:48essentially being having one of the highest if not be highs
- 1:20:53assistant staff in the country, you know, we move from that in
- 1:20:59the mid-2000s to now, you know, playing catch-up with like mid s
- 1:21:04teams and we We are surprised that the output on the field,
- 1:21:11has dipped relative to, you know, where those Staffing in
- 1:21:18and recruiting dollars are being spent.
- 1:21:20So, like I said, I love the energy that people have in terms
- 1:21:24of the passion about, you know, this is unacceptable.
- 1:21:28I'm right there with you. This is unacceptable, what
- 1:21:30happened today is unacceptable and it is a coaching problem and
- 1:21:33I'm 100% with that. But I think it's naive to think
- 1:21:38that you can just hire any coach and that's going to change.
- 1:21:42The situation is true, then it's true and where we were 20 plus
- 1:21:47years ago, was a different era of college football, and it was
- 1:21:51the money was different. And then when we were 15 years
- 1:21:53ago, the money is different. College football has become a
- 1:21:58corporation and if you don't want it like a corporation, you
- 1:22:01will essentially fail. And so far we haven't ran it
- 1:22:07like Corporation in the last 10 years.
- 1:22:09Where I hate to say this may be because of dado came from
- 1:22:12corporate real estate. He saw it that's how he started
- 1:22:16running it when he had hired 10 years ago and that's why they
- 1:22:19have been so successful and it's not going to go back, folks,
- 1:22:22you're not going to turn the clock back and it's not going to
- 1:22:24be like that anymore. Those dance like there's a
- 1:22:28bubble, man. He's just waiting out the
- 1:22:31bubble. Do you know what that means?
- 1:22:58Coming down for these TV contract because it's even more
- 1:23:01insane, right? Yep.
- 1:23:05I mean it's still going to be more insane like last weekend.
- 1:23:14Are you ready to hear this run? Yep.
- 1:23:18Clemson pulled Clemson. BC on ABC.
- 1:24:39But their biggest town in terms of draw wasn't even playing in
- 1:24:43the game and they pull those numbers against a middling ACC
- 1:24:47opponent. So, guess what I'm saying and
- 1:24:50there's no telling what the game that we just watch
- 1:25:03the bubbles burst and whether you want to fire just In Valente
- 1:25:09tonight, which if somebody told me and you today, that's going
- 1:25:12to happen. We'd be like, okay, but who's
- 1:25:13the next guy? What spleen that should be the
- 1:25:16question? Not too much, who gets fired,
- 1:25:17but what's the plan? Because it's a lot of money to
- 1:25:20buy him out. Let me 50 Min,
- 1:25:37but let me see what the plan is. As long as long as
- 1:25:53someone's going to come in with the salaries that were offering
- 1:25:56in all of a sudden it's going to be sunshine and Roses.
- 1:26:00So I'm definitely still tempering my expectations if
- 1:26:04that's the case. Yeah, it's it.
- 1:26:30You can't just have the right guy.
- 1:26:32It can't. If that happens, it has to be
- 1:26:35fucking perfect and that's not going to happen more than
- 1:26:38likely. It's got to be a long-term plan
- 1:26:42to say we're we were here. Now we're here.
- 1:26:45We're going to get back to hear if you're hiring you back to
- 1:26:47here. And if that happens, yes, it's
- 1:26:50potential to get back to where we were.
- 1:26:52Yeah. you know, we're paying your top
- 1:27:2540 money and we have top 20 expectations.
- 1:27:31There's not a lot of and and probably in terms of investment
- 1:27:35in the whole program. Maybe even top 50, there's not a
- 1:27:39whole lot of coaches that are going to see that and say, I
- 1:27:43want to come here all the benefits of blacks Burger worth
- 1:27:47the negatives that are. So I feel like we definitely if
- 1:27:56we keep seeing this like a pretty much this point unless we
- 1:27:59went out, you know, I think this year has been subpar
- 1:28:04unacceptable in terms of of where I thought we would be.
- 1:28:08And what I thought we would do and where we would end up is the
- 1:28:11only thing that saves this year is because if went still feels
- 1:28:19confident, as I cannot think of the guy's name who was under
- 1:28:23Frank back in. We got lost a job in 95 or he
- 1:28:27couldn't 95. If he doesn't come out and say I
- 1:28:31think this is more covid than anything.
- 1:28:33I think it was so funky. I think it was so fucked up that
- 1:28:38nobody could do anything good. We had we didn't have our
- 1:28:41Stadium here. We couldn't try one more Mille,
- 1:28:44we can do anything. Everything was so far off
- 1:28:47normal, I'm giving one of the year and, you know, if he comes
- 1:28:51and says it will probably be Okay but I think our issue will
- 1:28:57become if next year stadiums full and you know where Aidan
- 1:29:05for again people me like there's no difference man.
- 1:29:09Yeah well maybe next year we're talking about probably know
- 1:29:11Herbert true talking about probably know you we're talking
- 1:29:24about. Who else do you think is going
- 1:29:30to go? Is it rolling might lie?
- 1:29:34But the way Rooks played this year, his stocks not going to be
- 1:29:38as far up because even more. So this year for Brooke It
- 1:29:42showed in, probably more of an NFL based system.
- 1:29:45He's not strong and that hurts him.
- 1:29:50So he might say, no, I'm going to come back cuz I think I can
- 1:29:52do better in this system next year and screw it.
- 1:29:55If I do, I'll get my masters in something in be further
- 1:29:58educated. Yeah, so yeah, so that's what
- 1:30:02you're looking at right now. So I don't know if we're As good
- 1:30:08or better next year than this year but if we're still losing
- 1:30:12these dumb shit ass games like this today.
- 1:30:16Yep I mean it's going to be a bad look and it's going to be
- 1:30:21something that if it's not addressed this year it's going
- 1:30:24to be addressed next year. And like I said, every year that
- 1:30:27we end up putting out Aiden For Worse.
- 1:30:31You know Blacksburg lose a little loses a little bit more
- 1:30:35luster man and move on. There's only so long we can live
- 1:30:39off of. Mike Vick Frank Beamer Bud,
- 1:30:44Foster and Enter Sandman, we've only so long, we can love all
- 1:30:48from 95 to twenty ten or Twenty. Yeah, because right now, I mean,
- 1:30:54you know, we're still recruiting off of what we were then and not
- 1:30:58what we are now. And even every in every year
- 1:31:03that we are further away from that that gets that that's
- 1:31:07that's selling point is a little bit weaker.
- 1:31:10You know what? Makes me sad though, because we
- 1:31:12talked about a couple weeks ago, what we're selling a long
- 1:31:15offense, is so Superior to what it was 10 15 years ago.
- 1:31:21And that's what makes me sad. And you know, if you tell me
- 1:31:28tomorrow, they're firing him, you know, you got to do what you
- 1:31:31got to do. I like so small.
- 1:31:35So yeah, Brian, anything broken, other than Notre Dame.
- 1:31:39Upsets number one, Clemson, 4740 that we were watching here.
- 1:31:44And if you folks are wondering, that's why I want on my tangent.
- 1:31:48Those kids rated the field, they rated the film.
- 1:31:51Field. We talked about that and we
- 1:31:53talked about just how this the reason you guys are listening to
- 1:31:57us talk and we think that we pay money to go to the games.
- 1:32:06The reason that we pay money to go to the tailgates, I mean this
- 1:32:08shit makes you feel good. Even, even even when you lose
- 1:32:13when talking about it still kind of makes you feel good.
- 1:32:17So You know, for what it's worth, you know, that that's
- 1:32:22something that hopefully we can move back towards once once we
- 1:32:25figure things out with this covid thing guys.
- 1:32:27So because that's definitely missed this year.
- 1:32:30Like I said, win or lose. So yeah, I think that's going.
- 1:32:35That's all I really got to say about it, buddy.
