- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. I wanted to let you know this podcast
- 0:03episode was recorded on Tuesday, February sixth, twenty twenty four, So by
- 0:07the time you hear this, some things may have changed here or there,
- 0:10but we hope you enjoy this Opposition Territory show. All right, folks,
- 0:39welcome to Opposition Territory here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:43running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, that's right over ten and
- 0:46a half years strong. We got a great discussion coming your way about a
- 0:49specific NFL team that has certainly gone through some changes over the years. They're
- 0:54going to continue to go through some changes here during this NFL off season,
- 0:58and that is New England Patriots. Yeah. I know. Look, may
- 1:02not necessarily be Eagles Nation's favorite team out there, even second favorite team out
- 1:07there by any stretch of the imagination. However, what's interesting to me is
- 1:12where the dynamics are within this team in this organization, what their ownership is
- 1:18going to be doing in terms of taking this team to hopefully that next level
- 1:25at some point in the near future. So what's the quarterback situation gonna look
- 1:29like, Offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators. There's a lot of new stuff happening
- 1:33with regard to this Patriots team, and I think we've got a great discussion
- 1:37that's gonna be coming your way, so stick around for it. And it
- 1:40is great to have her back on the podcast joining us from Musketfire dot Com.
- 1:44You know, I love our fans sided sites out there, and she's
- 1:48talking to us about this new England Patriots team. What's gonna be happening in
- 1:52this offseason and beyond with them. As I mentioned during the intro, we
- 1:57have the one and only Sarah Marshall. How you doing, Sarah, I'm
- 2:00pretty good. How are you? I'm doing all right, you know,
- 2:01I mean, being an Eagles fan. I'm actually happy that it's the off
- 2:05season right now. They're making some decisive coaching changes, and I'm happy because
- 2:09the end of the season, as you know for us Eagles fans, was
- 2:12a complete and utter disaster. And it's great to have you on because there
- 2:17is this team in the new England Patriots that I find extremely intriguing as we
- 2:23are here in the off season, because this is because there's some similarities,
- 2:28you know, with the with the Philadelphia Eagles have been going through in terms
- 2:30of coaching changes to what is happening in New England. I think it's fascinating.
- 2:36It is as a fan as well. I mean, I think it's
- 2:39a little bit more exciting than most people might think in this situation. But
- 2:44you know, as many questions as there there is at this point, it's
- 2:47a lot of exciting things that are happening at the same time. Like it's
- 2:51been twenty plus years since we've had this like massive change. So yeah,
- 2:55it is fascinating to watch and see where they're trying to go. Yeah.
- 3:00Absolutely again, folks, we're talking to Sarah Marshall from Musketfire dot Com.
- 3:04Follow her on Twitter at s marsh xo. She is a great, great
- 3:07follow and we got to get into one of those big changes right off the
- 3:12bat right here. And I guess the million dollar question right out of the
- 3:15gate as somebody who is really in tuned to what's happening with this Patriots team
- 3:21here, and I'm sure Patriots Nation is just continuing to talk about this as
- 3:25well. It's the fact that Bill Belichick has not landed a head coaching position
- 3:30in the NFL. It didn't happen, just didn't happen for him. You
- 3:34know, whether it was front offices maybe being skeptical of bringing him on board
- 3:38for whatever reason. I'm wondering, what are your thoughts on why Bill Belichick
- 3:43just wasn't hired by another NFL team. I'm still scratching my head, honestly,
- 3:50you know. I mean, I think some people, at least fans
- 3:53were deterred about his age, which I'm still it's a fair argument, but
- 3:58you know, given how much he's accomplished his career, I don't know if
- 4:00you can really use that as something against him. But just based on what
- 4:04I've read, and I've continued to try and cover this as much as I
- 4:09can, it seems like it is the desire to have a lot of that
- 4:14power with the new team, and that those new teams are not open to
- 4:17that. Like he became such a huge part of the Patriots and wasn't willing
- 4:26to really give that up, you know, and I think that might have
- 4:28been a cause for some issues between him and owner Robert Kraft. And so
- 4:33if he's trying to do that with a new team, that's giving up a
- 4:36lot for a coach that one you're not familiar with because he's not been with
- 4:40your team. Right. And two, because of his age, you don't
- 4:44know how long he's going to be with you. It could be a two
- 4:46year rental of Belichick, you know, because he's seventy one years old at
- 4:49this point. So then forfeiting your right to the entire team, basically,
- 4:55I'm sure that's a little bit scary. I would imagine it is. And
- 4:59I think, you know, you know, I'm in my mid forties here,
- 5:00right. The one thing I have learned about human nature over the course
- 5:03of all these years is folks like to have control. And you're talking about
- 5:08Bill Belichick and the fact that he had so much control in this capacity basically
- 5:12like no other coach in NFL history, and can give them a decade exactly.
- 5:16To give up that control and and and the legacy that you leave behind
- 5:21with regard to that control, it has to be extremely difficult to do.
- 5:27And I can understand to an extent, you know, if I try to,
- 5:30you know, take you know, Eagles fandom. Cap Off can understand
- 5:32why why this man would not want to do that. I actually can understand
- 5:38that from a pure humanistic standpoint. Yeah, And that was why a lot
- 5:42of people think that he ended up leaving the Patriots because it. I mean,
- 5:46mister Kraft said about that too, like, oh, people asked him
- 5:50at the press conferences, had you considered him just being the head coach and
- 5:56not being the general manager and whatnot? And Kraft said, not really,
- 6:00because it's basically just taking everything away from him and it probably wouldn't work well.
- 6:03And I'm like, and other than that, the tension that was already
- 6:06alleged to be happening behind the scenes, that would probably only make it worse,
- 6:11right, So yeah, I just think that would have been a disaster.
- 6:15Yeah. Absolutely. Well, let's talk about another aspect of this team
- 6:19that you know, I've been thinking about and I think NFL fans in general
- 6:23have been thinking about as well, Sarah. And it's the fact that you
- 6:27know, you were reflective of these past couple seasons with regard to the quarterback
- 6:30position. Tom Brady was Tom Brady, and as someone on the outside like
- 6:38myself, you know, I get this feeling that his aura and that shadow
- 6:42it kind of still haunts Gillette Stadium and the quarterback position itself as it pertains
- 6:47to you know, where this team is going to be going with regard to
- 6:50that position. And I guess my two part question for you here would be
- 6:56what are your assessments of what the mac Jones experiment has been since Tom Brady
- 7:00has left the team years ago? And then I guess as a result,
- 7:05you know what happens with the quarterback position this offseason and even more from a
- 7:10long term standpoint. So I don't know, Maybe I want to start with
- 7:13the first ones. The first part of this, your assessment of you know
- 7:16what this mac Jones experiment has been over these years. So funny enough,
- 7:24I appear to have a more controversial opinion about mac Jones. I don't think
- 7:29it's controversial. I think I'm just being a human. But you know at
- 7:30Patriots Nation really does not like mac Jones. So me being an empathetic human
- 7:38that I am, I don't think that he was really given a fair shake
- 7:43from the beginning. I think the first year was great. You know,
- 7:46he had Josh McDaniel's, Bill Belichick had a pretty decent offense, nothing stellar,
- 7:49obviously, but coming into his fourth season in twenty twenty four, he
- 7:56will have his fourth offensive coordinator, his second head coach, and like an
- 8:00entirely new staff from like quarterbacks coach, everything like everything is going to be
- 8:03brand new, and other than that, he hasn't had, like I said,
- 8:11a stellar offense around him. It's been really nothing above average. Right,
- 8:15So, and then you know, you had Jacoby Myers who was his
- 8:18go to guy, and you let him go, you bring in Juju Smith
- 8:20Schuster who can't stay on the field. Like, there's just a bunch of
- 8:24messiness that's going on. And so for me, you know, I look
- 8:30at it like putting all of the blame on him is unfair. I think
- 8:35if there were if this weren't the Patriots, if this weren't a team that
- 8:39is universally hated by most other fan bases, there might be a little bit
- 8:43more understanding and leniency there given to him. You know, who else would
- 8:48you be saying, is it's it's fair that he had a former defensive coordinator
- 8:52who never worked with offenses calling the offense. No one would be saying that
- 8:56was fine exactly. I mean that happened to the Eagles Nation many many years
- 9:01ago, where there was an offensive line coach who was actually the defensive coordinator
- 9:07for a season under Andy Reid. It was a freaking disaster. It was
- 9:09terrible. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And and that is something that.
- 9:13I think people are not understanding how much that impacts a player because we're talking
- 9:18about the second year of him coming into the NFL, Like you're in that
- 9:22it's like being a baby, you know, when you're an infant, when
- 9:26you're a toddler, you're in the developmental phase. So that's kind of how
- 9:28it is when you bring in a rookie quarterback. It's not an easy transition
- 9:33from college to the pros. And then you're going on to having a second
- 9:35offensive coordinator in two years and is a guy that has never worked with offenses.
- 9:41Yeah, and it's like it's it's a mess. So I think that
- 9:46your second question about like what's the long term? Yeah, what happens with
- 9:50the quarterback position this offseason and long term? Yeah? Yeah, So I
- 9:54think that it can go a couple ways. There's obviously a general consensus that
- 10:01people think they're going to take a quarterback third overall. I mean, how
- 10:05do you not? Right, You have the third overall pick, the first
- 10:07time that they've been anywhere near that high since they draft Drew Bledsoe in ninety
- 10:11three, So it feels like, Okay, you're in prime position. The
- 10:13problem is the top two quarterbacks, the ones that seem to be are being
- 10:18touted far and above everybody else are said to be going to the first two
- 10:24picks. So that leaves the Patriots in a decision like, Okay, do
- 10:28you like Jaden Daniels enough to take him at three or do you want to
- 10:31go the safe route and go Marvin Harrison Junior because he's supposed to be,
- 10:35you know, a generational talent and they need a receiver. So there's that.
- 10:39But then there's also the idea of them bringing in a bridge veteran,
- 10:43so you could sign some random quarterback, you know, like Kirk Cousins,
- 10:46Ryan Tannehill. There's talks of Baker Mayfield in New England. You can do
- 10:50that, which I don't personally like. I think that's putting a band aid
- 10:54on a gaping wound that you just don't want to deal with. And then
- 10:58there is the Mac Jones experiment, and it's you know, year four.
- 11:01We can see what new offensive coordinator Alex van pelt feelds about him. He
- 11:05might say, you know what, I like Mac Jones. I think we
- 11:07can get him back to how he looked as a rookie. I want to
- 11:11work with him and he deserves another shot, more possible now with Giron Mayo
- 11:15as the head coach and it were with Bill Belichick, who would publicly like
- 11:18not even say Mac Jones' name. Yep. Yeah, So there's a definitely
- 11:22a bunch of scenarios, and I think free agency is We're fortunate that free
- 11:26agency is going to be coming sooner than the draft because that's going to definitely
- 11:31give us some more answers. Yeah, going into the draft. It's a
- 11:33really good segue into the next topic, Sarah that I wanted to dive into,
- 11:37because like every team is going to be going through that analysis, and
- 11:41they already are going through that analysis of what they need to do in free
- 11:43agency and the draft at this point. So I'm wondering, where do you
- 11:48feel most comfortable with this Patriots team during this offseason. I mean, there's
- 11:52a lot of holes on this team just objectively looking at it on the outside,
- 11:56lots of holes, lots of needs. But where do you feel most
- 12:00comfortable with where the Patriots are, whether it's with a particular person, a
- 12:03player unit, whatever. Were you most comfortable the defense? Yep? Okay,
- 12:09I you know that has been the stronger side of the team. For
- 12:13I don't know. Basically, since Brady left, it's like we reverted back
- 12:18to the early two thousands Patriots where everything was run through the defense and they
- 12:22had like a mediocre offense plus Tom Brady obviously, so I think that,
- 12:28you know, they they remained very competitive till the end. They were the
- 12:31reason why the Patriots were winning games when people didn't want them to win games
- 12:35because they wanted the number one overall pick. So and a lot of that
- 12:39had been happening without Christian Gonzalez, who was a phenomenal player, was on
- 12:46track to being the defensive rookie of the year, and without Matthew Judon because
- 12:50they both left in Week four against the Cowboys. So we're gonna get both
- 12:52of those guys back, which is very exciting. There's gonna be guys that
- 12:56are going to free agency, obviously, but I think the defense is going
- 13:01to be a little safer. We also have a new head coach who played
- 13:05on the Patriots defense. It was just coaching the defense, so if he's
- 13:09anything like Belichick, he'll definitely favor that side of the side of the team.
- 13:13Okay, Well, on the flip side of things, here, where
- 13:16are you where are you least comfortable when it comes to this team, you
- 13:20know, in terms of your thoughts here, I mean, they're gonna need
- 13:24to spend a ton of money and draft capital, and is there a specific
- 13:30position or unit where they really need to hone in on this off season where
- 13:35you really want to see see holes field where you are the least comfortable,
- 13:39Like, where is that on the offensive side of the ball. Yeah,
- 13:41I was gonna say, I'm like the offense. Yeah, I would say
- 13:46my priority, I would say is offensive line and the wide receivers because they
- 13:56you know, we know Belichick hasn't liked to spend money. He has developed
- 14:01a way of building a team that's just good enough to win a lot of
- 14:05games. Obviously, but that was with Tom Brady. We don't have Tom
- 14:09Brady. No one has a Tom Brady right now. So I think that
- 14:13is a little scary. I think that that's part of what makes it scary
- 14:18is we don't know who the general manager is. Yea, they haven't named
- 14:20one. We have whispers of it being Elliott Wolf, especially after all these
- 14:26hires that have connections to where he's worked previously, which is it's okay because
- 14:31he has been with the Patriots for a few years. But yeah, the
- 14:35uncertainty of the GM, so we don't have any really guideline of how they
- 14:39might approach free agency, how they might approach the draft. Even though Belichick
- 14:43was a little bit unpredictable, we kind of knew, like, don't throw
- 14:46out the idea of him trading back and drafting a center in the first round,
- 14:50you know, because that was a Belichick thing to do. But we
- 14:52don't have that now. So that is what I think makes the whole thing
- 14:56a little bit more uncomfortable because there are positions that we need to address immediately,
- 15:01and one of them is the receivers. So it's like, you have
- 15:05to go out and spend this money this year. You can't keep ignoring it.
- 15:07Yeah, I do wonder, and I was going to get to this
- 15:09in a second, but I'll just I guess, just ask you right now
- 15:13straight up, because the roster construction for this Patriots team is going to be
- 15:16really really interesting to follow this offseason. I mean, do you think it's
- 15:20basically going to be a whole new team on the offensive side of the ball
- 15:22here, I mean, I mean, whether it's receivers, it's the trenches,
- 15:28which is desperately needed from an offensive standpoint for the Patriots here, is
- 15:31it really going to kind of be like an all new offense? Do you
- 15:35think in your opinion, I feel like, yeah, I think in a
- 15:39way it kind of passed to you. I think they should bring back some
- 15:41players. Obviously, we have some good players going to free agency, and
- 15:46I would like to see them come back. But I think it needs to
- 15:50have a full makeover. I mean, we don't even know who the quarterback
- 15:54is going to be, and if it's Mac Jones, we've seen how like
- 15:58just completely down he is, you know, like he doesn't look like a
- 16:02normal dude. He looks miserable out there, and a lot of the offense
- 16:07looked like that last year as well. So I think they have to do
- 16:10that if they want to try and make it to be a productive team again,
- 16:14to have an offense that, uh, you know is not crossed off
- 16:18on opponents being like, yeah, we don't care. That offense isn't scary,
- 16:22like you need to you need to do that absolutely, or yeah,
- 16:26we're gonna be stuck here forever and that is not not fun. I mentioned
- 16:30to you. I remember, I think it was one of the first times.
- 16:32We talked one of my good friends from Espianation, Mark Schofield, is
- 16:36actually going to be on the show this week. You know. Yeah,
- 16:38Mark's fantastic And I remember just years ago, and this was before Brady was
- 16:42retired, going to be leaving i should say, the Patriots and heading down
- 16:48to Tampa Bay. He just said, Jeff, we're going to be walking
- 16:49through the desert for a long time, meaning Patriots fans and the team.
- 16:55And it really seems like that certainly has been happening. You know, Mark
- 16:59was able to foresee that actually happening, and it I'm going to be more
- 17:03amazed at and intrigued as well at the new head coach, the new coordinators
- 17:10as well, Gerd Mayo. As we know new head coach, it's not
- 17:14just the scheme but the philosophy behind the scenes on how he is going to
- 17:18cultivate a culture and a winning culture. Inevitably Alex van Pelt, he's the
- 17:23new offensive coordinator, DeMarcus Covington as well defensive coordinator. Correct, Yes,
- 17:30I believe, yes, yeah, And I mean again, it just appears
- 17:33that there's going to be a new philosophical way of doing things here that Patriots
- 17:38Nation just hasn't seen in decades here. So what are your thoughts overall?
- 17:44Perhaps you know your fears or maybe what you're excited about in terms of this
- 17:48completely new coaching overhaul. I would say my fears are just I would assume
- 17:53it would probably be what anyone would feel at this point is just the inexperience,
- 17:57you know, And I think you get so comfortable with having a guy
- 18:03like Bill Belichick running your team that the idea of then bringing someone in who
- 18:07hasn't even been a coordinator, yeah, is a little scary. But this
- 18:11is a thing. And I'm not comparing the two but Eagles connection here.
- 18:14Andy Reid wasn't a coordinator before he was a head coach either, So people,
- 18:18I mean, I'm not saying Dromeo's a next to Andy Reid, but
- 18:22we have seen it be successful in the past. So I'm trying to keep
- 18:25that in my mind because that's been a huge thing that people are like,
- 18:29Mayo was not gonna be great, blah blah blah, we'll see, we'll
- 18:32see. Look John Harbaugh, I mean, you look at John Harball down
- 18:34in Baltimore and what he has John Harball or Jim Harball, which is I'm
- 18:40getting them confused because I can't. Yeah, it's John Harble, It's John
- 18:44Harba. I'm like Baltimore ever, remember, dear heavens, I hate Jim
- 18:48John Harbaugh down down in Baltimore. I mean, yes, he was a
- 18:52special teams coordinator, but it's like special teams coordinator and look, he's been
- 18:56there forever. So it does happen where these not so bright and shy offensive
- 19:00and defensive coordinators are actually able to contribute well to a team and for a
- 19:06very long period of time as our head coach. And I mean he's played
- 19:10for the Patriots and then worked for the Patriots, so it's like he's learned
- 19:14from the best, seen the best, and so I think that's something that
- 19:18is exciting. Is he you know you mentioned the culture. I think he's
- 19:21going to implement a new culture, but he's going to bring in the best
- 19:25of the Patriot way, which Tom Brady said he hates, but you know,
- 19:29he'll bring those best elements in. And I mean the players have already
- 19:33said like they're overjoyed. They're so excited, which is huge because they've looked,
- 19:37like I said, a miserable team. And so the fact that They're
- 19:41already embracing Mayo and excited to play, and a bunch of free agents have
- 19:45already said I want to come back because Mayo is the coach. Yeah,
- 19:48that's huge. So I think that's part of the excitement that I have as
- 19:52well, because, as I said at the top of the show, like
- 19:56this is the first time in twenty years that we're having this big of a
- 20:00massive change, and I think it's time. Although I wouldn't be mad if
- 20:04we kept Belichick for another season, I think there is just a need for
- 20:08a shift here. So I'm excited. I'm trying I'm an optimistic gal,
- 20:15so I'm trying to keep that, but I'm very excited. All right,
- 20:18Well again, folks, we're talking to Sarah Marshall from Musketfire dot Com.
- 20:22Check out everything her and her colleagues are doing over there, really great,
- 20:26great reporting on the New England Patriots. Follow her on Twitter at s marsh
- 20:30XO. She is a great great follow Twitter x whatever you want to call
- 20:34it. But the final topic I wanted to dive into here, Sarah,
- 20:38was the fact that the Patriots are going to have an estimated seventy million dollars
- 20:44in cap space probably. I mean, I think it's maybe going to be
- 20:47more than that. I've seen reports where possibly seventy three million, seventy five
- 20:51million AS and much of that is going to be dedicated to certainly bringing in
- 20:55some free agents. I mean, that's that's a lot of money, that's
- 20:57a lot of cap room. I mean, offensive line, I even think
- 21:02a stud pass rusher, you know, basically acquiring talent in the trenches really
- 21:06should be a priority for them in free agency. You've already discussed, you
- 21:08know, the offensive line, but what are your thoughts on positions not only
- 21:14they need to address, but are there specific free agents that really might be
- 21:17good for this team as we're you know, looking at where this offseason is
- 21:22going. So I've said it already, but I'm going to say it again
- 21:26him emphasize the need for veteran free agent receivers. So, you know,
- 21:33the only receivers that they have under contract for twenty twenty four are Devonte Parker,
- 21:38Juju Smith, Schuster, and Damario Douglas. You can say kaishaon Booty,
- 21:42but we don't know what's going on with him, So I don't know
- 21:45that that's a rough list right there. Yeah, So you know, I'm
- 21:49glad that they extended Parker because they did that last season. I'm glad,
- 21:53I'm like, because otherwise they didn't really have anybody. But that's not anything
- 21:57that's exciting to look forward to. And there are a lot of great feagents
- 22:03that are going to be available this year, so I think it's more critical
- 22:07for them to go all in and get these some of these guys, because
- 22:11if you go with a rookie quarterback, having a veteran receiver is definitely a
- 22:15lot easier for him to transition. Then throw in a rookie receiver with him
- 22:19too, And then of course, if you're gonna go with even a veteran
- 22:22Bridge or mac Jones, give them a reliable guy that you can't then blame
- 22:26the quarterback, you know, for not doing their job well. So the
- 22:32main ones, and this will be for probably any team that needs a receiver.
- 22:36It's like t Higgins, he's young, he's playing behind Jamar Chase.
- 22:40The Bengals are probably not going to be able to pay all of them,
- 22:41right, so come over here, buddy, get paid in New England,
- 22:45you know. Or even Mike Evans he's a little bit older, but come
- 22:49on, Yeah, every season basically, what is it, ten of eleven
- 22:52of his seasons or something like that have been a thousand yards Like that guy
- 22:56is incredible. Michael Pittman Junior. I know that talks of him being tagged
- 23:00or being staying in Indie, but another guy that's younger and capable. So
- 23:06I'm all in on those guys. And then of course there's the offensive line.
- 23:10I'm not that great about who is available with the for free agents of
- 23:15offensive line, but the Patriots do you have Mike onwinw got to keep him,
- 23:19Please keep him. Trent Brown would be a great guy to keep if
- 23:23you can keep him motivated. That has been the biggest issue with Trent Brown
- 23:27is not having him check out by the end of the year. Belichick's gone
- 23:32now, so that might be a factor to keep him, especially if they're
- 23:36not going to take a guy like Joe Alt third overall in the in the
- 23:40draft. So I'm definitely that's the focus. Mayo has already said he's willing
- 23:45to burn some cash, and I'm like, please do it, please,
- 23:48We're begging you. Please. She is Sarah Marshall Folks from Musketfire dot Com
- 23:53as always my friend, who was great talking to you about this Patriots team.
- 23:57I'd love to talk to you more about some NFL storylines as where you
- 24:02know, moving forward through the off season over the summer. I'd love to
- 24:04have you on the show again, my friend. Yes, please do.
- 24:07I'm always down to talk about anything, especially the Patriots, but I'm good
- 24:11with anything, so I'd love to It's always great talking to Sarah. And
- 24:15of course I think there's gonna be some trying times for this new England Patriots
- 24:21team and organization in the future based on our conversation here. Look, it's
- 24:25a team that's going to need to build in different areas of the offense.
- 24:30In terms of the defense, as we were just talking about what is their
- 24:34spot going to be in the foreseeable future within the AFC East. It's going
- 24:38to be interesting to watch for sure. So that's going to do it for
- 24:42us here on Opposition Territory this week. Share our podcast with those out there

- 25:49offseason, you know, getting ready for the draft, getting ready for free
- 25:52agency, what we're going to be seeing from not only various teams, but
- 25:56you know what it's like kind of behind the scenes as well. Can't wait
