- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We get together
- 0:03Speaker 1: with Jim Moore every Tuesday and we kind of recap
- 0:07Speaker 1: what happened on the weekend and look ahead to what's
- 0:10Speaker 1: coming up on the weekend ahead of us. Merrimack is
- 0:14Speaker 1: the team that will provide the opposition of the home
- 0:17Speaker 1: opener for Yukon as Huskies will go into that one
- 0:19Speaker 1: oh and one and a coach. We got to recap
- 0:22Speaker 1: what happened on the weekend. That Maryland club, out of
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Big ten, has had two or three real good
- 0:28Speaker 1: years in a row, and they seem to have a
- 0:30Speaker 1: lot of momentum and they got off to a great
- 0:32Speaker 1: start and I think when that happens and your home boy,
- 0:36Speaker 1: that's a big boost for the opposition, isn't it.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah? It is. They're a good football team and they've
- 0:43Speaker 2: they've done a really good job of building that roster.
- 0:45Speaker 2: They're big, and they're physical, and they're fast, and they
- 0:48Speaker 2: know what they're doing and they're you know, last year,
- 0:50Speaker 2: they had I thought maybe a little bit some discipline
- 0:53Speaker 2: problems and coach Loxley's done a great job of fixing
- 0:56Speaker 2: that in terms of I don't mean discipline, discipline players.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I mean, you know, some penalties that hurt them and
- 1:01Speaker 2: they didn't hurt themselves. And when you go on the
- 1:05Speaker 2: road and the opponent gets momentum early, it's tough to
- 1:08Speaker 2: stop it. And that's something that you know, we have
- 1:10Speaker 2: to be better at. But I was really impressed with them.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I was not impressed with us, and I want to
- 1:18Speaker 2: be impressed with us, and I'm looking forward to getting
- 1:20Speaker 2: back out on the field on Saturday and playing better football.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah. One of the things leading up to the opener
- 1:28Speaker 1: that you talked about during camp and everything. You got
- 1:31Speaker 1: all these new players, fifty one new players, twenty eight transfers,
- 1:36Speaker 1: is it going to be? I guess work in progress
- 1:40Speaker 1: would be the best way to describe it in terms
- 1:42Speaker 1: of developing chemistry with players that haven't really played with
- 1:46Speaker 1: each other in games at high speeds.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean new players and new schemes offensively and defensively.
- 1:55Speaker 2: But that doesn't matter. You know, there's a lot of
- 1:57Speaker 2: teams in the country that are dealing with that, and
- 2:00Speaker 2: so we just have to deal with it better than
- 2:02Speaker 2: we have. I didn't feel, Mike like those were big
- 2:06Speaker 2: issues for us on Saturday. I felt like the issues defensively,
- 2:12Speaker 2: as we didn't tackle well. Some of our angles were poor,
- 2:16Speaker 2: whether it be on our run fits or down the field.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And on offense, you know, early in the game, we
- 2:22Speaker 2: had a couple of chances to convert some third downs
- 2:24Speaker 2: that we didn't get converted, so we couldn't sustain drives.
- 2:28Speaker 2: You know, I think Chris Freeman's a hell of a kicker.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Him missing that kick, you know, putting some boards up
- 2:34Speaker 2: or some points on the board a little earlier would
- 2:36Speaker 2: have helped us. So there's just a lot of things.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And like I'm not pointing anyone individual a lot. I
- 2:42Speaker 2: only point Chris out because he's the kicker. He did
- 2:45Speaker 2: a great job on kickoffs. It's just, you know, we
- 2:49Speaker 2: just all gotta we've all got to do better. We've
- 2:52Speaker 2: all got to play up to our potential. We all
- 2:54Speaker 2: got to stay in the moment and play the player
- 2:55Speaker 2: we're playing. And I believe, and you know, these are
- 3:00Speaker 2: going to be empty words I would say to anyone
- 3:02Speaker 2: that's listening, but I believe this is going to be
- 3:03Speaker 2: a good football team. We have to go out and
- 3:05Speaker 2: prove it, though.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Right long way to go. Obviously, one week in the books,
- 3:09Speaker 1: you got eleven games seven at home, starting with Merrimac
- 3:14Speaker 1: Nick evers, your QB won the job, and I thought
- 3:18Speaker 1: three the ball, well, I mean he moved the ball
- 3:20Speaker 1: down the field here and there, but then he got hurt.
- 3:24Speaker 1: What's the status with him? What do you know? And
- 3:26Speaker 1: do you have hope that he might be able to
- 3:28Speaker 1: play this weekend?
- 3:29Speaker 2: I always have hope. And he was out of practice today.
- 3:33Speaker 2: He didn't do a lot, but he was out there
- 3:36Speaker 2: tuned in to what we were doing and involved in
- 3:39Speaker 2: the game plan. Joe and Tucker and Cole got most
- 3:44Speaker 2: of the reps, did a good job. You know, that's
- 3:46Speaker 2: one of those things that our medical staff will decide
- 3:49Speaker 2: on game day whether or not he's he's able to play.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I know for a fact that he'll do everything he
- 3:55Speaker 2: can to get ready to play. I know he'll be
- 3:57Speaker 2: mentally prepared to play. He'll know the game and if
- 4:00Speaker 2: he's if he's cleared, he'll go out and he'll play great.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And if he's not cleared, I feel like we you know,
- 4:05Speaker 2: we hand the ball to Joe and he's going to
- 4:07Speaker 2: do a great job. And you know, if he gets
- 4:09Speaker 2: to Tucker he gets the cold, they'll do a great
- 4:11Speaker 2: job as well.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah, one thing about Nick Evers he hadn't played a game,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and you mentioned it afterwards. We have to remember it's
- 4:18Speaker 1: been a couple of years since he's actually been in
- 4:21Speaker 1: a game for you know, multiple multiple snaps. So as
- 4:25Speaker 1: you viewed what he did his body of work in
- 4:29Speaker 1: game one, how would you describe what you saw?
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, I think it's significant what you said is that
- 4:34Speaker 2: he really hasn't played in a football game since he
- 4:37Speaker 2: was in high school. I mean, he took some snaps
- 4:39Speaker 2: at Oklahoma against Texas, but they weren't real snaps. They
- 4:43Speaker 2: weren't competitive, you know, in the game snaps. So that
- 4:47Speaker 2: was his first real action since high school. And what
- 4:51Speaker 2: impressed me was his demeanor, his ability to come to
- 4:55Speaker 2: the sideline and tell us what he was seeing. I
- 4:58Speaker 2: thought that he did a really good job with his
- 5:00Speaker 2: decision making. He protected the football for the most part,
- 5:03Speaker 2: even that interception at the end of the first half.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You know, as a staff, we're not putting that all
- 5:08Speaker 2: on Nick. You know, we could have run a better route. Uh,
- 5:12Speaker 2: could have you know, done some other things better. There,
- 5:16Speaker 2: could have had a better call. H could executed better
- 5:19Speaker 2: at all positions. But uh, I'm I'm very encouraged with Nick.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You know, I love the way he handled the game
- 5:27Speaker 2: even when we got down, and I think there's a
- 5:30Speaker 2: lot of really great things on the horizon for him.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah. The tough thing to Jim, isn't it when you
- 5:35Speaker 1: when you fall behind any team, doesn't matter if you
- 5:38Speaker 1: had a veteran quarterback. The quarterback almost feels like he's
- 5:41Speaker 1: got to do something to get some momentum back to
- 5:44Speaker 1: his team, and that kind of forces the issue. That's
- 5:46Speaker 1: that's a tough situation to put your QB in, especially.
- 5:50Speaker 2: If it's a good defense like Maryland. You know, Uh,
- 5:54Speaker 2: they were one of the better defenses in college football
- 5:57Speaker 2: last year. Uh statistically, they returned the lot of guys.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They're big, they're physical, they're fast, they can cover, they
- 6:04Speaker 2: tackle good tacklers. But we were within reach, you know.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I mean it started ugly, getting down fourteen or nothing,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and then twenty, but still even at twenty and nothing,
- 6:14Speaker 2: we were within range. And that's why we decided that
- 6:16Speaker 2: at the end of the first half that we try
- 6:17Speaker 2: to get a go and use our timeouts and maybe
- 6:21Speaker 2: see if we get at least a three on the board.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But that kind of backfire and they got a three
- 6:25Speaker 2: on the board instead. Yeah, but I mean, listen, you
- 6:30Speaker 2: know Nick can handle pressure, Joe can handle pressure, Tucker
- 6:34Speaker 2: can handle pressure, Cole can handle pressure. They're all guys
- 6:37Speaker 2: that And when I say pressure, I don't mean blitzer is.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I mean the pressure of the game environment. And it
- 6:43Speaker 2: was good for us, I believe, and good for Nick
- 6:44Speaker 2: to see how he would respond to pressure. And he
- 6:48Speaker 2: responded well, which should give him confidence and it certainly
- 6:51Speaker 2: gives us confidence.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Jire Moore willis, do you cut Football Coaches Show? Mike
