- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm a host Anna McGivern for November 1st.
- 0:11Today is National Author's Day, a celebration honoring writers
- 0:15who create those stories, ideas and knowledge that enrich our
- 0:19lives. First proposed in 1928 by Nellie
- 0:23Byrne Burton McPherson, president of the Bement Illinois
- 0:27Women's Club, This Day was officially recognized by the
- 0:31United States Department of Commerce in 1949.
- 0:35McPherson, a teacher and passionate reader, was inspired
- 0:39while recovering in a hospital during World War One.
- 0:43After reading Irving Bachelor's work, she wrote him a fan
- 0:47letter. When he graciously responded
- 0:50with an autographed copy of another story, she realized that
- 0:54she could never adequately thank him for the gift his writing had
- 0:58given her. So she created National Authors
- 1:02Day as a way to encourage readers everywhere to express
- 1:07appreciation to the authors whose words have moved them the
- 1:10most. What makes this day special is
- 1:13its timing. November 1st also marks the
- 1:16beginning of National Novel Writing Month.
- 1:20Nano wri MO making it a celebration of both published
- 1:24authors and aspiring writers embarking on their own creative
- 1:28journeys. And that brings us to today's
- 1:31quote from writer Neil Gaiman, who once said a book is a dream
- 1:38that you can hold in your hand. Damon's beautiful observation
- 1:42captures why National Authors Day matters.
- 1:46Authors don't just write books. They create dreams, package them
- 1:51in pages, and hand them to us. Every novel, memoir, or
- 1:55collection of poetry represents someone's imagination made
- 1:59tangible, their inner world given form.
- 2:06Think about what this means when you hold a book.
- 2:09You're holding someone's months or years of creative energy,
- 2:14their struggles with language, their late nights questioning
- 2:18every word you're holding, their fears, hopes, questions, and
- 2:22answers. Authors take the most private
- 2:25part of themselves, their dreams and imagination, and make them
- 2:29public, vulnerable, shareable. Damon understood that this act
- 2:35of creation and sharing is both terrifying and generous.
- 2:41Authors have no control over how their dreams will be received
- 2:45once they leave their hands. Yet they share them anyway,
- 2:49trusting that somewhere, someone will hold that dream in.
- 2:54Let it change them. National Authors Day asks us to
- 2:58honor that courage and generosity.
- 3:02As you head into your Saturday, Celebrate National Authors Day
- 3:06by honoring the authors whose dreams have enriched your life.
- 3:10Write a note to a favorite author thanking them for their
- 3:14work. Leave a positive review for a
- 3:17book that moved you. Buy a book from an independent
- 3:21author. Share a favorite passage on
- 3:23social media with hashtag National Authors Day.
- 3:28If you're a writer yourself, use this day as encouragement.
- 3:33Your dreams matter. Your stories deserve to be told.
- 3:38November 1st marks the perfect time to start.
- 3:41Nanowrimo begins today. Remember Guymon's wisdom, every
- 3:47book is someone's dream made real.
- 3:50Honor the dreamers and maybe become one yourself.
- 3:55That's it for today. Thanks for listening.
- 3:59I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:03tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:09with another daily quote.
