- 0:00Simon. What you've got to do in this
- 0:03recording is keep absolutely quiet.
- 0:06We are recording the story on cassettes, so do not speak all
- 0:11the way through. You've got to be quite a voice.
- 0:13The microphone will pick you up, but but, but no absolute quiet,
- 0:19apart from me. Who can sing in the theme?
- 0:23Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:26commentary podcast. Now, I because if we were doing
- 0:30a bit of therapy there, well, maybe if you're a member of my
- 0:35family from 1981, this will bring back lots of memories
- 0:40video. Unfortunately, for the rest of
- 0:42you, that means nothing at all. I'll see you made.
- 0:44You held all your family, Hostage to be quiet throughout
- 0:48all of Doctor Who. So you could take the
- 0:50soundtrack. Well, basically, not my dad's
- 0:52did my dad so it'd be my birthday at my sixth birthday,
- 0:56which was a seminal birthday in lots of ways because I got my
- 0:59first Target books. I've got my first Doctor Who
- 1:01cassette, which was Genesis, and the Daleks and I got a tape
- 1:05recorder as my main birthday present, so I could have that in
- 1:08my room and listen to music and stuff.
- 1:10And so Dad bought me some cassettes as well.
- 1:13And so he had the brilliant idea of when Doctor Who was being
- 1:17repeated in the summer of 1981 big clue there for anyone paying
- 1:21attention and one story will be doing, he said what we could
- 1:25record This story onto cassette and you could listen to it
- 1:30again. What a brilliant idea.
- 1:32No other doctor who founded ever thought of that idea?
- 1:35Did you do that? Use that fabulous.
- 1:37Electric tape to label your cassettes.
- 1:41No, I didn't have one of those. No, this one was handwritten by
- 1:44my mum who had the best handwriting and so we're I
- 1:48recorded all of Doctor Who and full circle on cassette for
- 1:53Circle. You say, yes, Obviously one of
- 1:59the very few Doctor Who stories that have had its title in the
- 2:03dialogue. I love Frazier, I love Frazier.
- 2:08I freaked. Gregory thinks.
- 2:09Yeah, hello might interject here for you.
- 2:11Can't please because I have to say I've had a fabulous day here
- 2:14in bracknell. Hello outer London.
- 2:17I've come to visit my wonderful friend so I'm not in his new
- 2:20house, which is absolutely stunning.
- 2:22Well, thanks very much. We've had a frou-frou memories
- 2:25of my life, basically, Evan way. Often the given delicious egg
- 2:28and bacon and hot cross buns. And coffee treated like a
- 2:31prince. And in the dark Dusty, recesses
- 2:35or not, Dusty is new in that dark.
- 2:38Recesses of Simon Hearts cupboards is the most fabulous
- 2:43box of Doctor Who memorabilia Dalek bubble baths and a boss.
- 2:49No, they weren't on it, but that was Tardis.
- 2:51Bubble bar hardened, a tidal power whilst walking Daleks hook
- 2:54and eyes as Cyberman mask that he made as a A child and best of
- 2:58all this wonderful scrapbook of my scrap old clippings from all
- 3:05Doctor Who things that have been in newspapers and magazines in
- 3:08the mid-1980s. Sort of Colin Baker's time, man.
- 3:12Oh man, it's a fucking Treasure Trove.
- 3:14I will not disclose his address because I think you'll be around
- 3:17here. Oceans fucking 11.
- 3:19Trying to NAB the stuff and one letter from Target books, which
- 3:22relates to this story as well. He's All P of h, r cos Guide to
- 3:28the Galaxy episode 6. The actual, the camera print.
- 3:34Not the carotenoids. The Sounds tape.
- 3:36That's it. Sorry.
- 3:37Yeah. But the actually the real you
- 3:40got some amazing stuff. I know it's a as well as just
- 3:44about every bit of Doctor Who merchandize you could possibly
- 3:47think of, especially the books, amongst all of those fabulous
- 3:51things. So I'm is a Blu-ray set for
- 3:55season 18. Well, of course I mean it's the
- 3:58best season of Doctor Who the best season yet.
- 4:01Well, if it's not the best, it's certainly my favorite.
- 4:05Please quantify that? It's the one.
- 4:08I love. Best you sake, get.
- 4:14This is it. Is it purely for nostalgic
- 4:17reasons? Oh, no.
- 4:18Think genuinely this is the best season of genuinely.
- 4:21I think this stands up, I'm certainly, this is the for me,
- 4:26the The best season of classic Doctor Who and probably all of
- 4:30Doctor Who if I'm because it's some of its nostalgic because
- 4:35this is really where I became a huge fan.
- 4:38If anyone has ever heard the Leisure Hive commentary which I
- 4:41think just about everyone in the world that was that was the
- 4:46story that made me a fan but all of these stories are so Etched
- 4:51in my head. I was just so in love with
- 4:53Doctor Who really at such a young age this season, just
- 4:57caught my imagination. And you know, when you did that
- 5:00Leisure Hive commentary and you drop the story about the canine
- 5:04that you go around with it was extra day.
- 5:06He was in that box. What?
- 5:08Size a bit canine, he's a little bit tight as for the part of it
- 5:12but then he's very old. Yes, very old and it doesn't go
- 5:15through the rigmarole that canine goes through his nose
- 5:17things. I'd have got him the Christmas
- 5:19after Full circle was on so Christmas 1980 so yeah.
- 5:23He is very, very old poor old thing when when Mark and I were
- 5:27talking about the 1980s in general.
- 5:29Yeah, we kind of reached a consensus that the strongest
- 5:32parts of the 80s, were the first season yet so big midseason.
- 5:36And the last three, which is Carmel seasons.
- 5:39And that's because there is just a consistent tone.
- 5:43Yes, and there's sort of a willingness to push the envelope
- 5:47in interesting ways are the Royal fall of what Eric's
- 5:50Warden. You know, we did snake dance.
- 5:52You know, we've done others more than Undead.
- 5:55Yeah, I've seen some 20, really. But certainly like bid Meade's
- 6:01stronghold of this season and I do think I can detect Barry
- 6:05Letts in there as well. Yeah.
- 6:07Like his sort of focus on storytelling and John
- 6:14nathan-turner, sort of ability to put the money on the screen
- 6:17between the three of them. Yeah, it's a new team.
- 6:20Coming in and wanted to show off what they can do and break from
- 6:24the past, really, I think, isn't it?
- 6:26And I think you've got your showpiece with the Leisure Hive,
- 6:29which has got some of the most avant-garde Direction.
- 6:32Yeah, ever until Warriors gate, which has some of the most
- 6:35avant-garde until you go, but to sort of few and far between.
- 6:43But then you have mega gloss, which is a bit of a throwback to
- 6:46season 17, but we've sort of the new technology in place.
- 6:50This was the first sort of like, how style.
- 6:54Yes this is. This is sort of really your
- 6:56first business as this is what doctor who will look like in the
- 7:0180s more. Than the previous two.
- 7:05I think whilst is introducing a new companion, it's not starting
- 7:08the season, it's not ending the season it had.
- 7:10I've got continuity or the Mast or anything.
- 7:12And this is a relatively continuity free Standalone.
- 7:18Science fiction story. Yes.
- 7:20And it's just, you know what? I'm going to say a word and this
- 7:23is what I hear people saying in a -, and I mean, it's entirely.
- 7:28It's so competent. Yeah, this is all right.
- 7:31It's competently written its competition.
- 7:33Currently directed our would not be ashamed to put this on.
- 7:36Well maybe some of the performances are the kids.
- 7:39Well, yeah but this is the danger of having kids but it's
- 7:43so efficient. Yeah.
- 7:45And I think Peter Grim wage was one of the most talented of
- 7:49Jonesy's early directors and him falling out with gentie was such
- 7:53a huge blow for the show. I've respond lunch, exactly.
- 7:57It shouldn't have happened and he should have bought that
- 7:59directing what's that? You rephrase her butt off out
- 8:02for lunch without me. We did.
- 8:04That's it. I'm never talking to all of you
- 8:07again. It's just pathetic, isn't it?
- 8:12You know, but we're talking with fragile egos created people.
- 8:16And these things happen is at this point.
- 8:20There is tremendous reductions in the main cast.
- 8:24Yeah. But it's not like green.
- 8:27Oh no, it's free. No, I think that's the
- 8:29interesting thing. It does come Warriors guy, I
- 8:32think I can see it. Lil Bit, you know, when Lila
- 8:35wall so tragic, you you'll do as you're told you know, and all of
- 8:38this we're all in the river in State of Decay when she goes
- 8:41what Patrick. And he goes a trick.
- 8:44We gotta go back for that. But yeah, this this is
- 8:51remarkably good television. Yes, I think.
- 8:53And it's a remarkably well, written Story by an 18 year
- 8:57olds. Exactly and well have fair play
- 9:02to Christopher, h b, Mead for take it out and taking that on
- 9:05respond. Yeah, they couldn't.
- 9:08It may well have not paid off and I think it's got all the
- 9:12things that make Doctor Who fantastic.
- 9:15It's got brilliant Cliffhangers Ruiz.
- 9:17Brilliant. Cliffhanger great monsters.
- 9:19Yeah, it's Pacey. I think dr.
- 9:22Dre's best has really decent location work.
- 9:24And this is some of the best location work in Doctor Who it's
- 9:28got a terrific. Go like oh Jess.
- 9:30It's got the best shot of the TARDIS ever in space.
- 9:34It's at the bit where it's all going around.
- 9:37Going into e space. Yeah.
- 9:38And what and the really fast spinning across the screen very
- 9:42shortly into politics. Oh God I love that and I don't
- 9:46think it runs out of steam. I think the twist at the end is
- 9:48really good. It's got intelligent Concepts in
- 9:50it which are explored in some debt.
- 9:52The adult cost are all brilliant.
- 9:54Yeah, all of them. Well, I don't know what else
- 9:57we've got to say after talking. About this tall.
- 9:59Well, we better start. And then way are we going to
- 10:01have sold one? Yes, please.
- 10:03Okay, let's do it. What 10 minutes?
- 10:05Now, the intro to every mobster commentaries about quite tight
- 10:09for us, okay? Part of I'm alone in your house,
- 10:14you know? But the Countess in there,
- 10:31let's go in fabulous to just be able to watch it on the TV with
- 10:37the sound on well, five, four three, two March been He got
- 10:45caught. Lovely.
- 10:53Tom's hair just fits this title sequence.
- 10:56It has poor Peter. His head was never quite the
- 11:00same but I loved I loved all the time to seek with all these
- 11:03Starfield titles. So I've asked you this question
- 11:05before but you must have got a bit of a shock, you know.
- 11:07Win this title sequence hitting the remember you know what
- 11:11Nathan said? Did you hear?
- 11:12Yes, it was a trailer for. This is actually it, huh?
- 11:20What I really like in season 18, particularly B is the feeling
- 11:27that they're all literally one after another.
- 11:30So here we are. They've just dropped off their
- 11:33friends. Oh yeah.
- 11:35From McCloskey said, he'd only got to be 10 minutes on a still
- 11:40upset, although I think when we come away from Christopher has
- 11:44been made into Eric's Awards. Sorry, you are up toward love
- 11:48Harvey but the the The dialogue where they explain the
- 11:52transition from one story to. And I've, you know, it's an
- 11:54example, those mutated Misfits will terrorize me till the end
- 11:58of time and whilst you were enjoying 38 hours.
- 12:01Do you sleep on the Delta wave or Mentor said there was no
- 12:06continuity. This color is straight.
- 12:08What isn't it? Could meet your twin canine,
- 12:10what do you think? The Vermont has ruined love
- 12:12romance room. It's so pastoral and peachy and
- 12:15it's just gorgeous. There's mushrooms are growing up
- 12:17the wall. Because some kind of screen, I
- 12:21just got nice chess set. Look this tragic Doctor Who and
- 12:25Romano play chess in her bedroom.
- 12:26I bet they do what chess. This is such a brilliant.
- 12:32See you don't get things like this between the doctor and
- 12:35companion. Very often now and and you
- 12:39certainly didn't in season seven know.
- 12:42So there's sunny. It's sunny being play dramatic.
- 12:44Yeah, and it their relationship. It's, it's almost like this is a
- 12:48conversation between Tom and Lila that they've got to go.
- 12:52Yeah as well. And it's I'm leaving the show.
- 12:56Well, you can't fight TV Executives in can't fight, g&t,
- 13:00Ramada. Look at that.
- 13:08That's just gorgeous. I don't know, but it's brilliant
- 13:14because it looks like a video effect.
- 13:15Yeah. But it's not like they're called
- 13:16until but this is definitely contact as its spinning here and
- 13:20I with the music and everything is so eerie and I want I want to
- 13:26ask you about East Bay, okay? Well, does it work as a story
- 13:32arc? Well, what is brilliant about
- 13:35the East Bay strategy and it's something that only occurred to
- 13:38me. Recently is That all the stories
- 13:44are the same, they're not the same the same but all the
- 13:48settings are the same. You've got a spaceship that is
- 13:50stranded somewhere that it shouldn't be and it's having a
- 13:54huge effect on the location around it.
- 13:59You're right yeah all three stories are different variations
- 14:04so that honah Lee different. Yeah that's why they've noticed
- 14:07was a Gothic horror one sort of out-and-out.
- 14:10Science Fiction are ones just weird with a gay it so it took
- 14:14me years to realize it's all about stranded spaceships and
- 14:18the different reactions because we don't has on the environment.
- 14:21Learn much about a space is self, do we?
- 14:24We visit the couple of planets lie.
- 14:28I hold him fixed up Ramona, doesn't go home.
- 14:31So they're trapped somewhere completely different and it
- 14:34gives the doctors travels a bit more impetus and danger because
- 14:39it kind of a purpose. Yeah.
- 14:40Purpose is to get back in to inspect which and you know the
- 14:44whole of Warriors gays Bill were around.
- 14:46Yeah, exactly. Very effectively as well.
- 14:51I'm going to tell you another reason.
- 14:52Okay, it's so successful because it's part of a larger Arc in
- 14:56this. Yes, and this is where the
- 14:58charge vacuuming boy. Bands are used to drain away the
- 15:02entire universe. Well, I think, what are you
- 15:05using for is to is tossing up? No, there it is.
- 15:09A lot of politicians are using it to take all the entropy and
- 15:12toss it off, somewhere else, forgive my terminology and what
- 15:16the Masters going to do is spunk it all back and destroy the
- 15:19universe. Exactly.
- 15:21But doctor who doesn't really do?
- 15:24No. Not at this time.
- 15:25Doctor Who never did this. That's almost like a great time.
- 15:28And even that was, isn't it? This is far tighter.
- 15:33So I need to point out that there are a large number of
- 15:36twink bums cause they need to pop off to the Loo.
- 15:42All right? I'm sure they're all of AIDS.
- 15:44I'm all right. There's some shots later on when
- 15:47they're in the water. Yeah, I don't think they realize
- 15:49that the material went see through when it don't even need
- 15:52to be wearing clothes. I could see everything.
- 15:55Well, Peter greenaway, you know. So This is at black Park.
- 16:00I've been to my part, there's just up the road from here and
- 16:06last year, yeah, it was last year.
- 16:09Me and Pete Lambert and Cullen. Neal went and we stood in the
- 16:13place where the village was and watched a bit of Full Circle to
- 16:17make sure we were standing the exactly the right place by the
- 16:20lake. Go into the water, and take a
- 16:21picture of your see-through class.
- 16:23I did not same old enough. I did go to Black part once with
- 16:27Brendan Jones also, So of this young Lads diving into the water
- 16:35for some kind of film that they were making, so they do.
- 16:38I begin for streets. We've just set that mr.
- 16:40Rollins, those soldiers. Come over the hill.
- 16:52He's like, I'm not just sitting this on location.
- 16:54No, I'm going to add some cobwebs today.
- 16:56I'm going to do some lighting lighting.
- 16:58He's adding some tropical plants as well.
- 17:01Most, yes of dry ice going through.
- 17:03It's all right. It's an Incredible use of a
- 17:07brilliant location. Thank you.
- 17:09Got to remember Doctor Who is on a shitty budget.
- 17:11Yeah but he's doing everything he can.
- 17:14Well I just don't think you can think Doctor Who is on a shitty
- 17:17budget in the season. Nothing it doesn't look like
- 17:19it's suddenly feels so much classier and to give John
- 17:24nathan-turner the props. He deserves him saying, you
- 17:27know, like that will do. Do in season 17.
- 17:29And there was a bit of that. I know they didn't have much
- 17:32money. There was a bit of that.
- 17:34So anyway, some of the direction.
- 17:36He's like, no, we're going to get in the best directors.
- 17:38We're going to bring in June Hudson.
- 17:40She's going to make everyone look rich and Cameron fabulous,
- 17:43you know, we'll have the best musicians from the radio phonic
- 17:45Workshop, like that it's new injection in all Fields, New the
- 17:49money's on the screen. You know, I'll here we go.
- 17:53So this is the first sign now that there's something.
- 17:56Something is wrong, something spooky Eve.
- 17:58Illusionary is occurring on this planet. when I was on, when I
- 18:05was doing my lockdown Doctor, Who polls, which I've mentioned
- 18:09in, in this podcast before was, I was watching Doctor Who, when
- 18:12I was furloughed, the very last story I did was Full Circle and
- 18:17I gave everyone the choice and it had four different names that
- 18:21it was known by. Am I?
- 18:22So I it was a production code which is six.
- 18:26Something 5 something I can't remember now, full circle.
- 18:31And I gave the third option, which was the one with the
- 18:35spiders coming out of melons, which is what my sister still
- 18:39refers to this one. Really.
- 18:41Why? Because she always remembered
- 18:43because she was terrified of spiders.
- 18:45The one where the spiders came out of the melons, I mean not
- 18:49that that sequence which is of not.
- 18:51Yeah, but that sequence, I think that is a good example of how
- 18:54good green waste direction is because the spider looks
- 18:58terrible, but he cuts very quickly.
- 19:01From the thing popping out the moon.
- 19:03So it'd be an honor face and it's recorded backwards so it's
- 19:07brought so it is on her face and it's pulled away.
- 19:10Yeah. And it's working so so well,
- 19:13okay, come on right, is that what?
- 19:16It's not just a trick though, is it?
- 19:17No. Any one of these actors would
- 19:20have been a better choice. The Matthew?
- 19:23Well, yes, well you've got got a burn pattern as tie loss who's
- 19:29very good, you know, he really did.
- 19:30Yeah. He went up for the role of adric
- 19:33and was told he couldn't have it, because he had a
- 19:35liverpudlian accent, he's a better actor.
- 19:38He is a better actor, and then Vash.
- 19:41I mean, why it should have been vast.
- 19:43Yes, Can I say I was over that fella, Richard.
- 19:47Somebody isn't it? He is beautiful.
- 19:49Yeah. And he he ended up in a
- 19:50relationship with Kate Amara. Well, that's true.
- 19:53It would a bit a few years after this.
- 19:56What I say, why he shortly after this, he had a relationship with
- 20:00June Paige. Who's playing Kira you told me
- 20:03right now that vaart was having it off with the Ronnie.
- 20:05Yeah for years they were together really well and like a
- 20:09happy relationship. I think it was fairly happy.
- 20:12I think there was a bit of abuse at the end.
- 20:14So I which is a shame. But yeah, there was a wow.
- 20:19They said yeah we totally can but obviously it's amazing.
- 20:22Okay. Okay.
- 20:23Ki Maro fabulous. But if you wore house I do think
- 20:32he has a he has moments in his rum where I think he's pretty
- 20:38pretty good. Okay.
- 20:40Yeah I think it's alright in this scene but he is let's be
- 20:43honest. He's not a great actor.
- 20:45I know he is stilted. He finds even things like
- 20:49walking across a set unconvincing.
- 20:52You know, like he's not the best choice.
- 20:55I could have made is that as he was quite pretty, I think so.
- 21:00But as a kid, he was just a Doctor Who and so everyone
- 21:03Doctor Who was was brilliant and he was great, I liked him a lot
- 21:07but she's my issue with this and I know I am going to be very
- 21:11positive about this sort of something that's great.
- 21:12But issue of this is in the previous season, you had two
- 21:16incredible actors as the regulars and canine.
- 21:19Yeah. Who and cute as a button and
- 21:21that's what out for sorry. Peter Davison who I think is Hit
- 21:26or Miss at rattigan an Sr. That's not progress.
- 21:29Us. It's it's really interesting
- 21:32though is fine because James he says oh the lineup was too smart
- 21:36dock two times or two Geniuses who Geniuses.
- 21:41It's just, wow. Okay.
- 21:44And yet, you know, when they get a drink to do physical stuff
- 21:46like this, where I used to swim, he's still in the river for he's
- 21:50got, but they don't do this enough, The Artful Dodger, and
- 21:53this is what he was supposed to be like.
- 21:56So by the end of this, he steals the image translate yesterday.
- 21:59Me and the top two guys you stole at home.
- 22:02What could come in handy? I'll let you know what this is
- 22:06really fill. Make all of this.
- 22:08Yes, and you've got Patty Kingsland doing really good
- 22:13music. I'm it's very 1980 and that's
- 22:17fine till I but, you know, this bit in a minute.
- 22:19When all the Mist comes out. Yeah, and he goes, I think he
- 22:27does Tire Decay as well. Yeah, he does.
- 22:29Yeah, except that was go in. Remember do, do, do do.
- 22:33You do did it in. It's all right.
- 22:37It was very patient. The these regular folding
- 22:41workshops calls are some of my favorite music.
- 22:44For Doctor Who I'll meet a tactic and you are the gentleman
- 22:51that wrote the dedication to Dudley Simpson for.
- 22:55Oh God, how we are Colts. Thank you.
- 22:57I do this. You talked about the hearts like
- 22:59why can I not sorry candy and And so I know you love deadly
- 23:05sins. Yeah, but it was too high, it
- 23:08was time, wasn't it? And I fit this was absolutely
- 23:13the right decision. This season wouldn't be what it
- 23:17is with a Dudley Simpson school. It would be something else, it
- 23:21would be great. But I've this the music this
- 23:24year just makes the series for me, you'd have to forgive me now
- 23:27because this is the bit with all the bums.
- 23:33Walter up. And I've got yeah, it's a lot of
- 23:37trouble is, sometimes you make that happen, it's put it in the
- 23:40water, I guess. Okay, oh yeah, they're very
- 23:43Seafood on that. Oh my God, the left there, the
- 23:47highest they're not wearing underpants.
- 23:52I mean, you just wouldn't boy. I'm gonna happen overnight.
- 23:57You know who any way, change the subject, we've been very lucky
- 24:02with the weather. Look at the ladies, uh, the
- 24:10coming of this fall. Oh my goodness.
- 24:14Who is this playing? This is funded.
- 24:16Require, he's very good, he's very good and he's only on
- 24:18location Yeezus knee. Your here's a very muddy against
- 24:22drugged off in this does. Yeah and that's that's that's
- 24:25leaning into some sort of B-movie.
- 24:27Yeah. Absolutely nice.
- 24:28Yeah. That's a pretty from the swamp
- 24:30and 1930s sort of Horror of being tracked into something by
- 24:36by a hand and they're doing the thing that I think.
- 24:40Good again really good. Doctor who dies is they're
- 24:42pouring a lot of location work into the first.
- 24:45Yes owed. So the first episode just feels
- 24:47very filling. Then there's none in part for me
- 24:50is discuss this before, haven't we?
- 24:52There's lots going on. In part for though, is ya Rahman
- 24:54has evil. Yeah Marsh men are attack but
- 24:56base Under Siege by that point. I drink, oh my God you've
- 25:03watched the camera work in this sequence.
- 25:05Now worry chases. Yeah.
- 25:06For as a forest right stuff and it's sort of sweeping around,
- 25:09there's only one other director but I can think of that does.
- 25:12So sweeps them offer. Something about its Grand
- 25:17Harper. So Jonathan Turner was bringing
- 25:22in some dynamism of his directors.
- 25:25It's just Brilliant stuff. It's really, really good and
- 25:29it's and it's such a far cry from season 17 which we both
- 25:34love. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:36My two favorite seasons of Doctor Who and they're so
- 25:39different. Yeah, you know, but then they
- 25:42are, they are childhood Seasons. They are so deep.
- 25:45When you did the tape, recordings of the, yes.
- 25:48What did you listen to it over and over?
- 25:49Oh God yeah. Do you know what I used to do?
- 25:51I've just remembered this. I also had the Viewmaster slides
- 25:55home sir. Kle with my so you get the 3D
- 25:58image. So I would listen to the listen
- 26:01to the tape and watch it through the 3D slides.
- 26:05You know, I'm surprised you about as much sex as you have
- 26:07and, you know, stories you tell me from your childhood very
- 26:12good. Well said the Starliner.
- 26:27Yeah with the Mist around it and OK again or I did the commentary
- 26:34for her brother's death yesterday and I said that Doctor
- 26:37Who spaceships in the classic series very often don't look too
- 26:40functional. You know they look like
- 26:42spaceships sets for the BBC for Doctor Who.
- 26:45Yes but the Starliner like the sound minor.
- 26:49This is like a place. Feels like a place where people
- 26:51could live and work. Yeah Joey is doing that season
- 26:5517. Anything, you know, of lots of
- 26:57triangles. Yes, it struggles on.
- 27:00So here we've got a really good Trio of actors.
- 27:04Who George Baker, As Logan, Alan row as oh.
- 27:11What's his name? Who was that?
- 27:12It was Alan row in a relationship with Jesse Belgium.
- 27:15That's right. Yeah.
- 27:15And he's back off to Fang rock or an old apartment our skin
- 27:20sale can say. Oh yeah.
- 27:22And the wonderful James Bree as late doctor.
- 27:25They've got out Delayed. Oh my God, Jay spray the
- 27:28warlord. And I can remember telling my
- 27:34friend Richard at school, there James.
- 27:38Brady had been in Doctor Who. Before we saw the war games and
- 27:40said, dad said, yeah, he was in Full Circle and what he was and
- 27:45then the trial of a Time Lord Direction, it's are running.
- 27:49Amok on Gallifrey, he was one of our favorites.
- 27:52We used to love doing an impression of him scare.
- 27:55This was really scary. I didn't like this.
- 27:58Well yeah. That water looks really my looks
- 28:02horrible, doesn't it? Yeah, and now I'm going under
- 28:06the Mist. Beautiful that is pure horror.
- 28:10That is really done boy. This really, he's just been
- 28:13drowned. Yeah, that's pretty good.
- 28:15Pretty grisly, oh, and there's a fabulous show in a minute where
- 28:20a truck runs towards the Tardis and the piano is getting full.
- 28:22Yeah, and Anna, Anna, Anna Anna. Sorry.
- 28:26Are you gotta forgive me with the instant of Music?
- 28:28I've got very excited, so he Nope, sorry.
- 28:31Sorry. So these three fellas.
- 28:36Yeah, two of them, know the secret.
- 28:39Don't. Yes.
- 28:40And the other one. Is it what until they can trust
- 28:43him? Yeah.
- 28:44That you don't see this. Yeah, I know, they know they
- 28:46don't only need Fred. My only note finds out when he
- 28:51becomes first decider because there's that scene in part 2,
- 28:54where he sees, where he looks Ashen, because he knows such
- 28:58Secrets. Sheriff, sheriff, that's the
- 29:00second one. Yeah.
- 29:04Parody on the, on the subtitles on brick box.
- 29:06I saw someone put the other day. They put Gary.
- 29:11I need friends for Ian and Ebe. A lace freddieb123.
- 29:23Sure of him healing quite quickly.
- 29:24Yes, that's good. We come back to it in the
- 29:26visitation. Don't we are not very often.
- 29:31Yes, Amy good. Syrians heal faster than you
- 29:33Tegan. Shame Shame.
- 29:35He couldn't have put those healing powers to use at the end
- 29:37of her, shall connect all those deeds.
- 29:40All those bits of him coming to the console room or maybe
- 29:54it's the only other set they've got.
- 29:56But this is important as well, isn't it?
- 29:58Because then we come back to Ramona's room in logopolis.
- 30:00Yes. And it's Jettisoned in.
- 30:03Yeah, no, it's just some didn't in lakopolous.
- 30:07We just see that little little bit of it in logopolis and
- 30:11rather charmingly, she's got a photo of canine on her dressing
- 30:14table which I love. I think this is so gorgeous.
- 30:28I'd almost say you are the crown in champion of season 17 and 18
- 30:32as well. Probably So even the belts come
- 30:37in important later don't like is, when adric dies.
- 30:40Yeah, he lifts up his brothers burned.
- 30:43His he get takes that in this story, it's given to him.
- 30:48And interestingly, I think there are far more moments of drama
- 30:54and Pathos in this season than we ever got in 79.
- 30:59No, I'm not going to shit on 17. I prefer 17.
- 31:03It's fun. It's big bold Concepts.
- 31:05Yes, adventurous. It's got, you know, the boldest,
- 31:09most confident, companion and Doctor, huh, but great drama, it
- 31:14ain't no. But this has and I think we
- 31:20quite often Doctor, who often takes lalla Ward for granted.
- 31:25And I don't think she ever gets the cutest.
- 31:27She deserves, she's still my favorite companion.
- 31:30She's so confident. I think she's one of the best I
- 31:33think she is. She is really, really good.
- 31:35And she's really bossy in the gala for Yas.
- 31:39Okay. Seriously.
- 31:42Good in those Gallifrey audios, but terrifying in this story.
- 31:47We'll come on to this later on. So, for, for this, Second half
- 31:51of the story. She's basically mutes.
- 31:53Yeah but she does such interesting things with what
- 31:59she's got to play with which is affected.
- 32:01She's playing evil was ye all sort of months or so yeah but
- 32:05the way she sort of Glides around the sets.
- 32:07Yeah and she's sort of like She's Got Claws.
- 32:09She's fucking at the air, isn't she?
- 32:12It's very different from when Sarah Jane played evil in.
- 32:15Yeah. Very, yeah.
- 32:17It's almost like a slightly seductive quality about her and
- 32:23I summon Lord together. Just so great.
- 32:27It's all this bric-a-brac about. This is really tearing out the
- 32:30console. Real space doesn't have negative
- 32:34coordinates. What does that mean sighs?
- 32:38She's so pretty as well. She a budget.
- 32:41Just a very accomplished actress.
- 32:43Yeah I'm surprised she didn't get more work.
- 32:45Actually she should have done. Oh this is we're coming up to
- 32:49one of the single mode best I there are lots of Doctor Who
- 32:55Cliffhangers which are monsters coming out of water.
- 32:58From the Dalek invasion of Earth, the sea Devils Curse of
- 33:01fenric and everyone always says all the sea Devils is the best
- 33:04one. But actually it's this one.
- 33:06I think the sea. Kevin, look a bit drunk.
- 33:08Yeah, I'm out of. This is so stylish Li directed
- 33:12with the slow motion and the music music and the dry ice and
- 33:16the sun behind them. This is certainly the most
- 33:19Artie. Yeah.
- 33:20All of them. Yeah, for sure.
- 33:23And I like the fact that like, in the sea levels I just what
- 33:25comes through out there. The second episode of this, they
- 33:28take Ages come out of the water and they're all Lola.
- 33:31Wetting, father-son, it's beautiful.
- 33:35All right. Yeah, I can remember this being
- 33:37a really creepy moment cause you don't know what's gonna happen
- 33:39and then suddenly and I think this is a sort of moment.
- 33:43You talk about in the playground yesterday.
- 33:45As you watch Doctor Who last night just came out of the lake,
- 33:50That's just the way it's framed with the plants in the
- 33:52foreground. So you can't quite see them and
- 33:54they with the light you can't. They're brilliant was impressive
- 33:58as well. Is I don't think that a best
- 34:00costumes and Note and yeah, the way they shot.
- 34:03Yeah, the way they shot here. You can't really tell at this
- 34:06point. No.
- 34:07And even when you can when they're in the studio it's the
- 34:10masked child. Yeah.
- 34:12And don't you care about? It's such a lovely performance
- 34:17that you care and I think a lot of it stand out.
- 34:19On Baker acts? Yes, hello.
- 34:22How old are usually get on terribly?
- 34:24Well with children as a scene Setter, that's an interesting
- 34:29episode as well, because the doctor Ramona didn't even leave.
- 34:32The Tardis till the very end, not exactly.
- 34:36But they've got other things going on, which is sitting up,
- 34:39what's to come later, what's happening in this season because
- 34:42the same thing happens in make loss.
- 34:43Yeah, they don't leave the Tardis in episode 1.
- 34:45Did I is there setting up convincing set Yes, that
- 34:50building up these worlds and then out companies to lots of
- 34:55investigation and exploration and I do think that's in sharp
- 34:59contrast to 17 where they're straight in the thick of it
- 35:03being brilliant of our funny, you know.
- 35:06Yeah, it's it becomes a bit of a problem in Season 22 when
- 35:12they're not out for. So long also feels anyway, is
- 35:17probably not as As long as as this story has been, but I don't
- 35:23know. It's yeah.
- 35:24It's just, it's just an 80s thing, isn't it?
- 35:27I think. Well, sigh, I would like to find
- 35:31out what Sinister creatures. Have just emerged.
- 35:34Absolutely from the water. Would you care to hold my hand?
- 35:38I keep asking you to hold my hand.
- 35:40His last time you made me watch snack fucking snake.
- 35:42That's this time. I'm watching monsters coming out
- 35:45the words. Exactly.
- 35:46So never sleep again.
