Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Tesla has lost the EV crown to a Chinese company
Transcript
- 0:00Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025.
- 0:03The number is down 9% from the year before, and it marks the
- 0:06second consecutive year of declining sales for the company
- 0:08that built the electric vehicle market.
- 0:11BYD, the Chinese automaker that Elon Musk once dismissed as not
- 0:14a serious competitor, sold 2.26 million EV in the same period.
- 0:18Now, for the first time a year, Tesla is no longer the world's
- 0:21largest electric vehicle maker. The company that rewrote the
- 0:24rules of the auto industry just lost its crown.
- 0:27Now, the question now is whether that matters, or whether Musk
- 0:30has already moved on to something completely new.
- 0:32And the fourth quarter was the weakest since 2022 for Tesla.
- 0:36Deliveries came in at 418,227, which missed Wall Street's
- 0:40already lowered estimates of 440,000.
- 0:43Tesla had even published its own company compiled consensus on
- 0:47its investor relations website a few days before the report,
- 0:50setting expectations at 422,000. 850 vehicles.
- 0:55They came in about 4600 units short of their own number.
- 0:59Now one is energy storage. For Tesla.
- 1:01They deployed a record 14.2 GW hours in quarter 4 alone and
- 1:0646.7 GW hours for the full year. This is a 48% jump from 2024.
- 1:12We're going to talk about how the federal tax credit
- 1:14expiration hit Tesla harder than expected, how the Musk backlash
- 1:18played out in Europe and parts of the US, and why investors do
- 1:21not seem to care about any of this in right into that after
- 1:24this short break. Now, Tesla just posted its
- 1:27second straight year of declining vehicle sales while
- 1:29claiming the future of the company lies somewhere else.
- 1:32Musk has spent much of 2025 telling shareholders that car
- 1:35sales are not the metric that matters anymore.
- 1:37Robotaxis, humanoid robots, and energy storage are supposed to
- 1:41be the growth engines now. The delivery numbers that
- 1:43dropped on July 2nd suggest that the transition is happening
- 1:46whether the market is ready or not.
- 1:48The stock dropped 2.59% on the day of the report.
- 1:51That is a muted reaction from Miss this Size Now.
- 1:55The $7500 federal E tax credit expired on September 30th, 2025.
- 2:00That deadline pulled a wave of purchases into the third
- 2:03quarter. People wanted to get in on a
- 2:05good price and quarter four paid that price.
- 2:07Tesla's quarter 3 deliveries had jumped 7.4% year over year.
- 2:11Then Q4 dropped 15.6%. That whiplash explains part of
- 2:16the myth Cox Auto projects. The fourth quarter USE sales
- 2:20across all brands were about 46% lower than the third quarter.
- 2:24As a disclaimer, I used to work for Cox Auto and yeah, so I
- 2:28have, I have no bias, but I just want to let you guys know.
- 2:30Now, the entire industry felt the sales decline.
- 2:34Tesla felt that more than most because the company had no other
- 2:37incentives to offer. The competition had dealer
- 2:39discounts, 0% financing, and manufacturer rebates.
- 2:43Now, Tesla had a price cut in October, though, just wasn't
- 2:46enough though. You were PN registrations for
- 2:48Tesla fell 39% in the 1st 11 months of 2025.
- 2:51BYD registrations in Europe rose 240% over the same period.
- 2:55That's a huge Tesla lost nearly four out of every 10 customers
- 3:00in Europe. Well, BYD more than tripled
- 3:02that. Mind you, BYD vehicles are not
- 3:04sold in the United States, but they're in Australia, Southeast
- 3:07Asia and South America and they're surging.
- 3:09The pricing is generally lower than Tesla's and their product
- 3:12lineup is expanding faster and they have some features that are
- 3:15better than Tesla in my opinion. Now BYD's global expansion has
- 3:19been one of the fastest in auto history.
- 3:21They look what Tesla was doing and they made it better.
- 3:24Musk's political activity made things harder for Tesla.
- 3:27He spent the first quarter 2025 leading DOGE to slash the
- 3:31federal workforce. He endorsed Germany's far right
- 3:33Afd party, He backed British anti immigration activist Tommy
- 3:37Robinson. He called for abolishing the
- 3:39European Union. Protests broke out at Tesla
- 3:42facilities. Sales slumped in markets where
- 3:44those statements landed poorly. And Musk stepped back from DOGE
- 3:47in May, and the move was widely seen as an attempt to reassure
- 3:51investors. Now, the damage in Europe and
- 3:53parts of the US has not fully reversed yet.
- 3:55Some prospective customers simply will not buy a Tesla
- 3:58anymore. It's a real demand destruction,
- 4:00and it does not show up in a spreadsheet until the quarter is
- 4:03over. You know what else is
- 4:04destructive? Not you.
- 4:06So I've been digging through the analytics of the show and notice
- 4:08that 37% of you have followed the channel.
- 4:10Thanks for helping me grow this place.
- 4:12I think it's amazing that you're here.
- 4:14And for you, I am forever grateful.
- 4:16Now the other 67 or 63% of you have not hit the followers
- 4:21subscribe button yet. And I will tell you why you I've
- 4:24been an independent journalist covering Elon Musk since the
- 4:28beginning of space. I was in one of the first Test
- 4:31Tesla vehicles in California and I thought this was the future of
- 4:36everything. I've been following Musk since
- 4:38pretty much day one. And I've been at this for six or
- 4:41seven years now. And I'm going to continue doing
- 4:43this as an independent journalist for the next 10
- 4:46years. And all I ask from you for the
- 4:47next 10 years of my life is one second of yours to hit the
- 4:51follower subscribe button. It helps out the show more than
- 4:54you would imagine. I'm extremely grateful for you
- 4:56and I'm blessed to have you right here, right now and in
- 4:58this community. So thank you for doing that.
- 5:00Now let's talk about some China stuff.
- 5:02Tesla's Giga Shanghai posted 97,171 wholesale units in this,
- 5:07which was 3.6% higher than the same month last year and the
- 5:11second best month in the factory's history.
- 5:12It's a strong finish still. Full year China sales came in at
- 5:16851, 1732 units, down 7.08% from 2024.
- 5:21The Model Y change over in early 2025 disrupted production and
- 5:25competition in the domestic Chinese market is brutal.
- 5:28BYD dominates there, and a dozen other Chinese brands are
- 5:31fighting for the rest of the pie.
- 5:33Xpang delivered 429,000 vehicles in 2025, up 126% from the year
- 5:39before. Li Auto delivered 1.5 million
- 5:42cumulative vehicles and is still accelerating.
- 5:45Tesla is holding ground in China, but it's not gaining
- 5:47ground. And here's a detail that does
- 5:50not fit the doom narrative. Though I guess some more some
- 5:52positive things. Tesla remained the top car brand
- 5:55in Norway for the 5th consecutive year.
- 5:57The company registered 34,385 vehicles in 2025 which give it a
- 6:0119.1% market share and the Model Y alone accounted for 15.4% of
- 6:06all cars sold in Norway last year.
- 6:09One in every five car in Norway. The new ones was a Tesla.
- 6:12Volkswagen came in second with 13.3%, Volvo came in 3rd 7.8%.
- 6:18Norway finished 2025 with 95.9% of all new vehicle registrations
- 6:23being ease, which is record. That is the most easy forward
- 6:25market in the world and Tesla still won it.
- 6:28That suggests the Tesla brand is not broken everywhere in the
- 6:32world, just some places. So to battle that, Tesla
- 6:35launched some stripped down version of the Model Y and Model
- 6:373 in October of 2025. The new Model Y standard starts
- 6:41just under 40,000. The cheaper Model 3 standard is
- 6:44under 37,000. Now, those prices are supposed
- 6:47to help Tesla compete with Chinese models in Europe and
- 6:50Asia, but Q4 was the first quarter with those vehicles in
- 6:53them. It's too early to say whether
- 6:54they're working. And the new Model Y is available
- 6:56with 0% financing through January 2026, which suggests
- 7:00Tesla is willing to sacrifice margin to move those new models.
- 7:03It's a defensive play. They're going to do that for a
- 7:06little while, then they're going to take it away from US.
- 7:08Now. The stock finished 2025 up
- 7:11roughly 11%. Doesn't make sense if you're
- 7:13looking at just car sales. It makes more sense if you
- 7:16believe what Musk is selling. Investors are betting on Cyber
- 7:19Cab, the dedicated robotaxi with no steering wheel and no pedals.
- 7:22Tesla confirmed in late December the production has started ahead
- 7:25of volume manufacturing April 2026 at Gigafactory Texas.
- 7:29Prototypes have been spotted testing on public roads in
- 7:31downtown Austin, some with temporary steering wheels for
- 7:34entering validation. And the robotaxi service itself
- 7:37is already live in Austin using a fleet of self driving model
- 7:40Watt. Tesla is also planning to expand
- 7:42the service of San Francisco and eventually Europe, though Musk
- 7:44has acknowledged that European regulations will require a
- 7:47mountain of paperwork. The energy storage business is
- 7:50growing faster than the cars ever did.
- 7:52Tesla deployed 46.7 GW hours in 2025, up from 31.4 GW hours in
- 7:582024. Now a GW hour is a unit of
- 8:02energy storage capacity. And for context, one GW hour can
- 8:05power roughly 100,000 homes for about 10 hours.
- 8:08Tesla is building utility scale battery projects for grid
- 8:11stabilization around the world and the demand is very high.
- 8:14It's outpacing their supply. If you're an investor looking
- 8:17for a growth story, this is the one that has actual numbers
- 8:20behind it. Car delivery are falling, but
- 8:22energy deployments are climate. And the begapack business is not
- 8:26just a side hustle for Elon Musk anymore.
- 8:28That was another thing we have to talk about.
- 8:29The Delaware Supreme Court in December reversed a lower court
- 8:32ruling and stated Musk's $55 billion pay package from 2018
- 8:37that had been frozen for years in a legal dispute.
- 8:39The reversal was a significant win for Musk personally and
- 8:42removed a cloud that had been hanging over his relationship
- 8:45with the Tesla board. Teslas directors also approved a
- 8:47new pay package in November 2025, one that could be worth
- 8:51nearly a trillion dollars if Musk hits aggressive performance
- 8:55targets. Shareholders voted yes, and the
- 8:57bet is that Musk will take Tesla to a $7 trillion valuation.
- 9:00That's roughly five times its current market cap.
- 9:03So the math's pretty good. Tesla sold fewer cars for the
- 9:07second year in a row. It's OK BYD is now the biggest
- 9:10EV maker in the world. They they've beaten Tesla.
- 9:12Now Europe is slipping away from Tesla. the US tax credit is
- 9:16gone, but Tesla's stock is up. Its energy business is booming.
- 9:19Cyber cap production is ramping. And Musk just got his pay
- 9:23package back. Now, whether that pivot works
- 9:26depends on whether Elon Musk can deliver those robo taxis at
- 9:29scale before the car business shrinks too far to fund that
- 9:33bet. I want to take you back a little
- 9:35while. Do you remember when Elon Musk
- 9:37said anybody with a Tesla could rent it out during downtime?
- 9:41He was talking about when you're at work, what does your car do?
- 9:44It just sits in an empty parking lot or sits in a parking lot
- 9:47empty. He said you would be able to
- 9:48rent that and make some money on the side.
- 9:50Little side hustle you got going on there, giving people rides
- 9:53with your Tesla. You would automate the driving.
- 9:55You wouldn't be in the vehicle. It would do everything through
- 9:57an app. And because they're making this
- 9:59autonomous fleet of cyber cabs, do you think that's still going
- 10:02to come into play? Let me know in the comments of
- 10:05your podcast player what you think about that because that's
- 10:08an interesting thing to think about.
- 10:10Will that still be available to people that own Teslas
- 10:13currently? Or is he going to take back that
- 10:16from you, the current Tesla owners in the future, if that's
- 10:19what you're betting on? And let me know in the comments.
