- 0:29What is going on, everybody?
- 0:30Welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:31Media Roundtable.
- 0:33Oh, my goodness.
- 0:34We have a full crew.
- 0:35I got a change of view, though.
- 0:35There he is.
- 0:38What's up, buddy?
- 0:39You know,
- 0:41just keeping it professional
- 0:49around these parts.
- 0:51Slides in as the theme music is rolling.
- 0:56Charlie, can you stretch your arms out?
- 0:58Nope.
- 0:59Nope, didn't think so.
- 1:00Look at that tree.
- 1:03Why that?
- 1:04Because we did a ton of
- 1:07dumbbell bench press
- 1:08directly into max bar muscle-ups.
- 1:11Ooh.
- 1:16And it was rough.
- 1:22Well,
- 1:22the way Charlie flies through a bench,
- 1:24he doesn't do the extension, so...
- 1:28I did call him out one time.
- 1:31Listen,
- 1:32there's a mobility issue that you
- 1:33need to keep in mind.
- 1:36But Charlie, can you do this?
- 1:39No.
- 1:43And that seemed inappropriate.
- 1:44It did.
- 1:44I didn't know what to say.
- 1:47I was... I just needed... Listen,
- 1:50we were practicing...
- 1:54pull your arms back to your
- 1:55chest and he can only go
- 1:56here well not making it
- 1:58better okay well I just had
- 2:00to keep rolling nobody's
- 2:02even watching so we're good
- 2:03right well they're probably
- 2:06telling the two people are
- 2:08probably telling their
- 2:08friends now to come join
- 2:11okay it's all for the views
- 2:14I don't I don't even know
- 2:15where to go from here right
- 2:18so was it I so you know if
- 2:20there's bench press charlie
- 2:21showing up to the gym
- 2:22Well,
- 2:22Charlie's showing up to the bench
- 2:24because that's just what
- 2:25we're showing up to the gym.
- 2:26Cause that's what we do now.
- 2:28You come at least five times a week.
- 2:29Nice.
- 2:31And, and we're meeting that goal.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34This is the first week.
- 2:37Yes.
- 2:38Week one.
- 2:40We're going solid.
- 2:41The first day week.
- 2:45Okay.
- 2:48Jody's with us already.
- 2:49Okay.
- 2:50Hi, Jody.
- 2:54Next week is when I add all
- 2:56of my extra programming.
- 2:59Yeah.
- 3:00See, I tried to dial him back with,
- 3:01let's just focus on getting to the gym.
- 3:03Don't worry about all this extra stuff.
- 3:06Just get to the gym five times.
- 3:07Nope.
- 3:14Let something new come out.
- 3:15Bet you I have it.
- 3:17First of the year,
- 3:18there will be lots of new stuff.
- 3:21You get,
- 3:21you get in a three new programs
- 3:22under the tree for
- 3:23Christmas and then Santa better come on.
- 3:28You got to implement them
- 3:29all by the Saturday after
- 3:30Christmas and quit them all
- 3:32by Wednesday after Christmas.
- 3:33Yep.
- 3:33Sounds about right.
- 3:38I need one of these athletes
- 3:39to start a new program so I
- 3:40can just slide on in.
- 3:42Okay.
- 3:42That like that sounded okay.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:50I didn't name any athletes.
- 3:52So, I mean, I can't have a list.
- 3:56I think there actually are a
- 3:57few people starting new programs.
- 3:59However,
- 4:00it's getting lost in all the drama.
- 4:02So I don't really know.
- 4:03I'll need to look these up.
- 4:05Andrew, it's done.
- 4:08What's up?
- 4:10Good morning.
- 4:10If they got a free week, I'm in.
- 4:15Well, there's J.R.
- 4:16Howell is starting We Prefer the Hate.
- 4:18Nope, don't care.
- 4:23That's the name?
- 4:24Yeah, W-T-P-H.
- 4:29W-P-T-H, yeah.
- 4:30W-P, yeah.
- 4:35What?
- 4:35We prefer to hate.
- 4:37We prefer the hate.
- 4:39The hate, okay.
- 4:40The hate, yeah.
- 4:40Hmm.
- 4:45He's kind of like Jason
- 4:46Hopper's secret coach,
- 4:48not the one he publicly has
- 4:50gone to with Brute or the former HWPO.
- 4:54And wasn't Brooke Wells
- 4:55wearing one of his shirts?
- 4:57She was.
- 4:58Interesting.
- 5:03All the drama.
- 5:04Yes, get to the drama.
- 5:06Well,
- 5:06I want to know what's up with you guys,
- 5:07and then we'll get into it,
- 5:08because I'm tired of the drama.
- 5:10Okay.
- 5:12Is anybody a heel yet?
- 5:13I need a heel.
- 5:16A heel?
- 5:17Like a wrestling heel?
- 5:18Yes, a wrestling heel.
- 5:20Sorry, ladies.
- 5:21What does that mean?
- 5:24A villain.
- 5:24Oh.
- 5:28Like a true villain.
- 5:30Like Mertens was sliding there,
- 5:31but then he just kind of stopped.
- 5:33I need a true villain.
- 5:35That's you in our group, Charlie.
- 5:37You are the heel.
- 5:40You need a villain in the
- 5:42sport to get you excited
- 5:43about the upcoming season.
- 5:46I got you.
- 5:47You have one also.
- 5:49Corey.
- 5:52He's the good guy, though.
- 5:59Ed is getting really fit,
- 6:00so it's not even really a
- 6:01contest unless you get more
- 6:03consistent buddies.
- 6:03Charlie is getting really fit.
- 6:05It's going to happen.
- 6:08Even though, guys...
- 6:10charlie was misusing a word
- 6:15I don't know for how long
- 6:16he's been using it so we
- 6:21started fighting again this
- 6:23week and then then it found
- 6:27out that he was misinformed
- 6:31is that me or just on the
- 6:33word it's her okay oh good
- 6:38you're glitching amy
- 6:40Glitching.
- 6:41It's definitely me.
- 6:42Okay.
- 6:42Well, you tell the story then.
- 6:46What's the word?
- 6:47The kids are using a word
- 6:48called big back now.
- 6:51I was called by my son,
- 6:54which when I asked him about it, he said,
- 6:56it's because you have a big butt.
- 6:58That's not true.
- 7:00The true meaning of a big
- 7:02back is you like to eat all
- 7:04the food in all the areas.
- 7:06Everywhere.
- 7:08Just a big butt.
- 7:10Your big body.
- 7:14And that's you.
- 7:15Apparently.
- 7:18Not how I would ever describe you.
- 7:20To a ten-year-old.
- 7:21So then I called Amy that
- 7:22because I thought it was
- 7:23the first meaning of it.
- 7:28But she knew what the actual meaning was.
- 7:29She did not.
- 7:30She asked your college
- 7:31daughter who then told her.
- 7:34Found out and that's why you're fighting.
- 7:36Yep.
- 7:37Got it.
- 7:38Seems reasonable for you guys.
- 7:40Yep.
- 7:43Okay.
- 7:44So that's, what's new with that, right?
- 7:46What's up with you, Kat?
- 7:49I got a boy.
- 7:50I got a boy home from school.
- 7:51Oh, I haven't, I haven't seen him yet,
- 7:54but according to his, by my iPhone,
- 7:56he was, he's home as of yesterday.
- 7:59So is he still a massive boy?
- 8:02I believe so.
- 8:03Yes.
- 8:03He's still training hard.
- 8:06He's either,
- 8:06whenever I check on his location,
- 8:08he's either at his
- 8:09apartment or at the gym.
- 8:12And note,
- 8:13he's a full-time student in college,
- 8:14so he should be in classes
- 8:15at some point in time, and maybe,
- 8:17hopefully, he's doing that as well.
- 8:21But, yeah,
- 8:22so he'll be hopefully coming to
- 8:24visit here at some point in
- 8:26the next couple days,
- 8:27and then just trying to
- 8:27figure out what I'm doing
- 8:28for the holidays, who's going where,
- 8:30you know, the whole broken family,
- 8:34where do you go, where do the kids start,
- 8:36where do they end up,
- 8:37all that good stuff.
- 8:40Figuring it out.
- 8:42They're old and kind of maneuver.
- 8:44Yep.
- 8:51Yeah, that does make it a little easier,
- 8:52for sure.
- 8:52So Jody Lynn said,
- 8:52Amy actually skipping and
- 8:53then skipping out.
- 8:55She also has all of her kids
- 8:56home for the holidays.
- 8:58So there's probably like two Switches,
- 9:01an Xbox, three computers,
- 9:03all trying to use the same Wi-Fi.
- 9:06That's correct.
- 9:07And a husband who works from
- 9:09home and using all the, the internet.
- 9:13So I used a different laptop.
- 9:14It's it's my laptop.
- 9:15That's glitchy.
- 9:16So.
- 9:18Uh, Jody also says same thing here, cat.
- 9:20It sucks no matter what the age.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:26Yeah,
- 9:27we have everybody coming in this
- 9:28weekend for our Christmas.
- 9:32Because of Julie's surgery coming up,
- 9:33we're not traveling anywhere.
- 9:36So we're doing our family
- 9:37thing this weekend.
- 9:38So Corey and the boyfriend
- 9:40are coming in Saturday.
- 9:41My mom's coming in Friday
- 9:43and doing all that kind of stuff.
- 9:45And then everybody will be
- 9:47out the door and home on Monday.
- 9:49And then Julie and I will
- 9:50just be here the rest of
- 9:51the week by ourselves.
- 9:52Bye, Christmas.
- 9:56I was thinking about, go ahead.
- 9:59I was going to say,
- 9:59when will you watch Love Actually?
- 10:02Well,
- 10:02Julie and I always watch that
- 10:03Christmas Eve, so that will happen then.
- 10:05Okay.
- 10:08Yes.
- 10:11The best Christmas movie ever.
- 10:12I love it.
- 10:16You're talking about Die Hard?
- 10:20No.
- 10:21Not Die Hard.
- 10:24Kat, you had something?
- 10:26I forget what I was going to say.
- 10:27Oh,
- 10:27I was just saying that maybe I was
- 10:28thinking about maybe doing
- 10:29something with the kids like Sunday,
- 10:30you know,
- 10:31it doesn't have to be like on the day,
- 10:33just a day close.
- 10:34And then that way I don't
- 10:35have to worry about it.
- 10:36I get, get my kid time.
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:39And we're,
- 10:40we're not sure how long Braden's
- 10:41staying because his
- 10:42girlfriend lives in Georgia and you know,
- 10:44they can't be away from
- 10:44each other for more than.
- 10:47So I don't think she came with him.
- 10:50So she's home.
- 10:50She graduated too.
- 10:51So she's not going back to school.
- 10:55which scares me for the next
- 10:56semester for Braden to make
- 10:58sure that he's actually
- 10:58going to go to school,
- 11:00stay there and not be
- 11:01driving back and forth
- 11:02because it's like a twelve
- 11:04hour drive or something crazy.
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:09So we'll see.
- 11:13celebrated Julie's birthday
- 11:14yesterday and it was fun.
- 11:16Um, uh, had a good time.
- 11:19Um, I don't bake.
- 11:20So I did, I ordered her nothing.
- 11:22Bunt cake.
- 11:23Yeah.
- 11:24Like cute little tower now
- 11:26of like samples.
- 11:28So you can try like a couple
- 11:30of different flavors.
- 11:32Cause it's just her and I,
- 11:33like there's no point in
- 11:33making like a big cake anyway,
- 11:35or buying a big cake.
- 11:37So, and they,
- 11:38they do a great job of like
- 11:39wrapping it up and
- 11:39ribboning it and doing all
- 11:41that kind of stuff and
- 11:41making it kind of festive.
- 11:43What flavor did you like the best?
- 11:47So I love carrot cake period.
- 11:49That's my favorite.
- 11:50So that was the, but we got red velvet,
- 11:52we got lemon and we got
- 11:54strawberries and cream.
- 11:55Oh, okay.
- 11:55Yeah.
- 11:58I would say Julie's was
- 11:59either the lemon or the
- 12:00strawberries and cream.
- 12:02I haven't had strawberries and cream,
- 12:03but I love the red velvet and the lemon.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08I think I'm allergic to the
- 12:09lemon because I got really
- 12:11bad stomach pain after eating that piece.
- 12:14And I am somewhat intolerant of lemon.
- 12:18So yeah, that was.
- 12:19Maybe it's just acidic foods.
- 12:22I can do lime.
- 12:23I can do lime all day long
- 12:24and I just can't do lemon.
- 12:26Limes aren't acidic, are they?
- 12:28Yes, citrus.
- 12:31Says the man who doesn't do
- 12:33fruits or vegetables.
- 12:35I thought lemons and limes
- 12:36are interchangeable, too.
- 12:38Technically,
- 12:39they're practically the same fruit.
- 12:40Yeah, for some reason,
- 12:43there's something in the
- 12:44lemon that gets me, and the limes,
- 12:45I'm fine.
- 12:48My lime's usually with tequila,
- 12:50so maybe that's why it
- 12:51doesn't taste as citrusy.
- 12:52There you go.
- 12:52There you go.
- 12:57So a couple things in the
- 12:59CrossFit space I'll pull up,
- 13:01and Kat actually sent me this one.
- 13:04I want to get your opinions
- 13:05on... I think it's this one.
- 13:14There we go.
- 13:17So the Association of Fitness Judges...
- 13:23announced that they will
- 13:24have their first in-person
- 13:26judging seminar where you
- 13:28can become an AFJ certified judge.
- 13:32This looks like it coincides
- 13:34with Wadapalooza, and that is Wednesday,
- 13:39January, from ten to four in Miami,
- 13:42Florida.
- 13:45Any thoughts on seminars to
- 13:48become a certified judge?
- 13:55I'm a huge fan.
- 13:56Yeah,
- 13:56I think we've been saying that we
- 13:59would like something like this.
- 14:00I would be curious to know
- 14:02how this translates after
- 14:04you take the seminar.
- 14:05What does that mean in the space?
- 14:10Yeah,
- 14:11I think it's a nice step in the right
- 14:13direction.
- 14:14I don't know what six hours gets you.
- 14:15Yeah.
- 14:18what are you looking at?
- 14:20What are you learning?
- 14:21I guess I just have to see it, um, uh,
- 14:25to be, to better understand it.
- 14:28Um,
- 14:30but I think in person is way better
- 14:31than an online judges.
- 14:32Yeah.
- 14:33And I,
- 14:35I think they'll probably get into
- 14:37some nuanced things that
- 14:39happen at competitions and
- 14:40they'll be able to sort of hopefully, uh,
- 14:43like go through certain scenarios of,
- 14:44you know, what to do when this happens,
- 14:46what to do when that happens.
- 14:49I think that will be good.
- 14:50And let's face it, ideally,
- 14:51the people that are running
- 14:52this are the ones that have
- 14:53a very strong influence
- 14:56into who gets selected for
- 14:58these competitions as judges.
- 15:00So I feel like at some point,
- 15:02it's probably going to be
- 15:04like the fee for admission, you know,
- 15:07to be able to even be
- 15:08considered for some of this stuff.
- 15:11because I think the people that are, um,
- 15:15you know,
- 15:16high up in the ranks in terms of
- 15:17judging are very connected
- 15:19to CrossFit and some of the
- 15:20other organizers of these events.
- 15:22And I really liked,
- 15:23I don't know if you got to
- 15:24the details of it yet or not,
- 15:26but the fact that people
- 15:28are going to be evaluated
- 15:29after Wadapalooza,
- 15:32because that happens a lot
- 15:33where somebody is a total F up, you know,
- 15:36and, and,
- 15:38there's consensus there,
- 15:39but it's not really,
- 15:40there's no process to sort
- 15:41of document it or, you know,
- 15:43have that live in somebody's record or,
- 15:47you know what I mean?
- 15:47Like,
- 15:47I just think it will be a little more,
- 15:49they're making it more of a
- 15:50formal process because I
- 15:52think there are instances
- 15:53where there are some people
- 15:53that maybe slipped through
- 15:54the cracks and,
- 15:58shouldn't continue to judge.
- 15:59Yeah, the bullet points are right here.
- 16:01I'll read them off real quick.
- 16:02It includes standard
- 16:03operating procedure at the
- 16:04most high levels, scorecard tutorials,
- 16:08athlete command and control
- 16:09during live events, team considerations,
- 16:12and then breakout sessions
- 16:13with elite level games
- 16:14athletes with peer and
- 16:16instructor-led feedback.
- 16:18So if you're, if you're going up against,
- 16:21if you're using elite
- 16:21athletes and then making
- 16:23them move and you judge them,
- 16:24I think that's awesome.
- 16:26Um, and then giving feedback,
- 16:28whether you should have called it or not,
- 16:29because judging at speed is
- 16:31very different judging in a
- 16:34box at the open with like
- 16:38judging me or Charlie or you, and then,
- 16:41or judging Pat Vellner Tia to me,
- 16:45they just move at a,
- 16:46at a speed that we don't see every day.
- 16:48Well,
- 16:49and I think distractions need to be
- 16:50considered too, because, you know,
- 16:52like if you're at a seminar
- 16:53and you're hyper focused on
- 16:54your judging versus a live
- 16:58event where there's so many
- 16:59different things that are
- 17:00happening that catch your eye.
- 17:02I mean, that's just human nature, right?
- 17:03Even if you are super focused,
- 17:05distractions are natural.
- 17:07So I'd be curious what some
- 17:08of our judging people like Andrew,
- 17:10like think about this as well.
- 17:13I'd be curious.
- 17:14My other comment is,
- 17:15and I got into this with
- 17:16dense updates in some DMs today,
- 17:20is just because she brought
- 17:22up the fact that they are
- 17:23being judged or evaluated
- 17:25after Wadapalooza and given
- 17:27feedback based on their
- 17:29performance there.
- 17:31When I was a judge at regionals,
- 17:34There was no formal report
- 17:35card that was given,
- 17:36but you got elevated or
- 17:38de-elevated from the heat
- 17:40you were in based on your performance.
- 17:43And on Sunday,
- 17:44half of the judging field
- 17:45was basically cut.
- 17:46Got it.
- 17:48Okay.
- 17:48And if you were in the lower half,
- 17:50you did not see the floor on Sunday.
- 17:54But that was also...
- 17:56more regulated by CrossFit, right?
- 17:59That was back in the day
- 18:00when CrossFit ran the judging, which,
- 18:04which they still do at their events,
- 18:06but they don't do that at
- 18:09Waterpalooza or the,
- 18:13they don't do loud and live.
- 18:14They don't do math.
- 18:16Right.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:17Yeah.
- 18:18No, I definitely, I mean,
- 18:19I think it's almost like it's,
- 18:20it's bringing it back to old school,
- 18:23you know, how it was.
- 18:24And I think, um,
- 18:26I think it's a lot harder
- 18:27for the CrossFit folks to
- 18:28give feedback and keep
- 18:29track of all that stuff at
- 18:30the games because there's
- 18:31so many other things going
- 18:33on at the games.
- 18:35But when they were doing
- 18:36that for regionals,
- 18:36I'm sure they had a really
- 18:37good process for being able
- 18:39to weed out some folks.
- 18:40And a lot of times at some
- 18:42of these competitions,
- 18:43there aren't enough judges anyway,
- 18:45so you're not going to be
- 18:46cutting half the field at
- 18:47the end of the day.
- 18:48Yeah, where back in the regional days,
- 18:50there were tons,
- 18:52like so many people didn't get in.
- 18:55right right more than more
- 18:56than you needed you know
- 18:57you'd be you'd be on break
- 18:59for hours before you get
- 19:00back on the floor whereas
- 19:01you know now you're
- 19:02probably on all day and
- 19:04barely getting a break so
- 19:06yeah I think I think it's
- 19:09interesting I I it's
- 19:10definitely progress and I
- 19:11love it I love to see it
- 19:13andrew does say I'll I'll
- 19:14be there for it I think
- 19:16it's great to give newer
- 19:17judges tips for for being better
- 19:24Jay Birch says, unfortunately,
- 19:25I will not be at Waterpalooza.
- 19:26I will be at TFX.
- 19:27We could use some more judges.
- 19:30Yeah,
- 19:30that's the bad thing about TFX going
- 19:32up around the same time as Waterpalooza.
- 19:36It really, like,
- 19:38shallows the pool of judges
- 19:40for the event.
- 19:41Mm-hmm.
- 19:45And I,
- 19:46and I also talked to dense updates about,
- 19:48or Jenny about what a
- 19:50Palooza being a good place
- 19:51to do it because you have
- 19:53community divisions and RX
- 19:54divisions to evaluate newer
- 19:57judges and to see if they
- 19:59have the chops to make it
- 20:00to the elite floor.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:01I think that's pretty ideal.
- 20:04Right.
- 20:05Use your best judges on the elite floor,
- 20:07evaluate the newer judges
- 20:08on the RX or the community floor.
- 20:11And then if they are good enough,
- 20:12then they can move.
- 20:14Yeah.
- 20:15And I like that they're
- 20:15incorporating elite athletes.
- 20:17I think not only will that
- 20:19give them some hands-on
- 20:20experience with those folks,
- 20:21but I think it'll give the
- 20:22elite athletes some insight
- 20:23into what goes on with the
- 20:25judges and how much work
- 20:28and focus does go into it,
- 20:29which might give them just
- 20:30a little bit more of an
- 20:30appreciation for how they
- 20:32move and sort of a better
- 20:33understanding of what those
- 20:35judges have to go through.
- 20:39Yeah.
- 20:39So the next piece of news is
- 20:43CrossFit announced,
- 20:44I believe it was yesterday.
- 20:48This thing, the community cup,
- 20:52when they announced the new season,
- 20:53this was part of the announcement,
- 20:55the verse in detail.
- 20:57Amy's like her eyes fixate
- 21:02to the meme immediately.
- 21:02Yeah.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:06And so the Community Cup is
- 21:09this stage that happens
- 21:11after semifinals for that
- 21:14one percent that make it to semifinals.
- 21:17This is where the levels
- 21:19come back in finally.
- 21:21After them being in there
- 21:22for three years with no explanation,
- 21:26this will be a competition
- 21:28that if you've done the Open,
- 21:29you get a score in your level,
- 21:33and then you get to compete
- 21:35against other people in
- 21:36your level at this Community Cup in June.
- 21:43So this is for like the
- 21:44remaining ninety-nine percent?
- 21:46Okay.
- 21:48And this is still like in your gym,
- 21:50like it's a virtual.
- 21:51Correct.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53It is one week, three workouts,
- 21:57and then you compete
- 21:58against other people in the
- 22:00same skill ability and,
- 22:02and stuff like that.
- 22:03So, um,
- 22:06So they announced this during the season.
- 22:09It had the detail of like
- 22:10what it was with the levels
- 22:12and all that kind of stuff.
- 22:13This goes on to say what it is.
- 22:17There's there's slides to this.
- 22:19You compete in the twenty
- 22:20twenty five CrossFit Open
- 22:21and receive your official
- 22:22level grouping you with
- 22:23other similarly skilled athletes,
- 22:25regardless of age or location.
- 22:27Levels will be identified
- 22:29based on placement in the open.
- 22:31Use the time between the
- 22:32open and community cup to
- 22:33tackle areas of your
- 22:34fitness you want to improve.
- 22:36And then during the community cup,
- 22:37throw down against others
- 22:38in your level to see who
- 22:40ranks the highest in each tier.
- 22:43So there'll be like a level one champion,
- 22:45a level two champion,
- 22:46a level three champion, and so on.
- 22:52And when I went through the comments,
- 22:53it's a mixed bag.
- 22:54It's about fifty fifty of like,
- 22:55this is a good thing or
- 22:56this is a bad thing.
- 22:58My question,
- 22:58I think this is the attempt to, like,
- 23:00replace quarterfinals,
- 23:02but be more inclusive.
- 23:07Yeah.
- 23:07More people to participate.
- 23:09And what do you think one
- 23:11affiliates will support it
- 23:12and have just like the open,
- 23:14have this one week where
- 23:16the workouts are available
- 23:17to you to do in the gym and
- 23:19to do this and submit your score to,
- 23:22do you think people will sign up for it?
- 23:24Um,
- 23:24does it mean anything to them that
- 23:26you're the best level two
- 23:27or the best level four?
- 23:30Um, the, those two basic,
- 23:34let's start with those two questions.
- 23:37Well,
- 23:38I think it might get more people in
- 23:41affiliates to sign up for the open.
- 23:44Example,
- 23:45I think a lot of gyms might
- 23:48participate in the open,
- 23:49but maybe not a large
- 23:51number that actually sign
- 23:52up for the open.
- 23:54So this way you might get
- 23:55more people to sign up for the open,
- 23:57which could then lead into
- 23:59more people signing up for
- 24:01the community cup.
- 24:03Yeah,
- 24:04it gives people who are low on the
- 24:07totem pole, if you will,
- 24:08of levels to have a competition,
- 24:11which they never really had before.
- 24:13Because if I know that I'm
- 24:14scaled every week, that's it.
- 24:17I'm doing my three workouts.
- 24:18I'm out.
- 24:19I get to compare my scores from last year.
- 24:23So if you have a pretty
- 24:24competitive person who's
- 24:26maybe not either new or
- 24:27just not excelling into level eight, nine,
- 24:31ten, whatever.
- 24:32not the one percent it gives
- 24:34them a chance to compete
- 24:35which is kind of cool I do
- 24:37like their approach in the
- 24:38communication where it says
- 24:40hey we're giving you three
- 24:41months to do after the open
- 24:43to fix your holes oh right
- 24:47you have and then we're
- 24:47gonna open it back up and
- 24:49say okay did you improve
- 24:50can you go up the ranks
- 24:53from the open time to june yeah
- 24:59Pat makes a good point here.
- 25:00It says two things I don't
- 25:01like about the Community Cup.
- 25:02One,
- 25:02it's redundant as it's basically a
- 25:04scaled open.
- 25:06Two, this is what I like.
- 25:07It directly competes with
- 25:09smaller local scaled comps like Festivus,
- 25:11local throwdowns and things
- 25:12like that in terms of the timing.
- 25:14But it's really only what?
- 25:16It's a week?
- 25:17It's one week,
- 25:18three workouts in the same week.
- 25:20Yeah.
- 25:20I mean, it's only one week.
- 25:22I need to know the cost.
- 25:25Right.
- 25:25Yeah.
- 25:27That's what I mean.
- 25:27I think that's going to,
- 25:28that's going to matter.
- 25:32In some sense, I can see how like, okay,
- 25:34when there's a small select
- 25:35going back to quarterfinals,
- 25:37there would be a small
- 25:38select number of athletes
- 25:39in your gym that was going
- 25:41on to quarterfinals.
- 25:43So some of those athletes
- 25:44who were maybe close to quarters,
- 25:46but didn't make quarters
- 25:48might be interested in
- 25:48continuing that competition.
- 25:50So for, for that reason,
- 25:51I could see but if it's
- 25:53another forty or fifty
- 25:54bucks that's not gonna fly
- 25:56I don't think so my first
- 25:58comment that pat is if
- 26:00level eight is not a scaled
- 26:02version of the open because
- 26:03you're level eight we're
- 26:05adding all the stuff right
- 26:07and your workouts to
- 26:08compete at level eight are
- 26:10muscle ups and handstand
- 26:11push-ups and all the stuff that like
- 26:16borderline trying to get to
- 26:17that one percent people to
- 26:19compete I I think that's
- 26:21fine and maybe not a scale
- 26:23version of the open and
- 26:24maybe we get something a
- 26:25little bit different um and
- 26:28then and here are the
- 26:29details real quick there
- 26:30will be three workouts to
- 26:31compete over one week all
- 26:33workouts will release the
- 26:34week before the competition
- 26:36to allow affiliates to plan
- 26:37ahead and while the scores
- 26:40must be entered online the
- 26:41community cup must be done
- 26:43in an affiliate
- 26:46And then each of the three
- 26:47workouts will be programmed
- 26:49with modifications to
- 26:50challenge each tier appropriately.
- 26:54So maybe those upper tiers
- 26:56get the hard stuff where
- 26:58the lower tiers it's scaled
- 27:00way back for them.
- 27:03So my question would be one,
- 27:06are they testing for this?
- 27:08I was asking for a friend, but two,
- 27:12if you're in the eightieth
- 27:13percentile and you know
- 27:15you're not going to be
- 27:17top and you're just like you
- 27:18know what I'm gonna go down
- 27:19to scale and just destroy
- 27:21it what's stopping you from
- 27:24doing that you're assigned
- 27:27of your level based on your
- 27:28performance in the open
- 27:31right you don't get that
- 27:33you know you're not going
- 27:36you're saying you
- 27:39you're saying cherry like
- 27:41dog the open so that you
- 27:43get a lower yes ranking and
- 27:45then go kill that division
- 27:48yeah I don't think there's
- 27:49any prize worth winning and
- 27:52if that's your goal then
- 27:54hey be a douchebag hey I
- 27:59love what david is saying
- 28:00here let's post that I'll do it
- 28:03I know quite a few people
- 28:04who are very proud of
- 28:05making it to quarterfinals,
- 28:06and I'm not sure this will
- 28:07have the same feeling.
- 28:08I do agree with that.
- 28:10I do agree with that it
- 28:13won't be for that quarter, top quarter.
- 28:17So let me be devil's
- 28:21advocate of what this may really be.
- 28:24Okay.
- 28:24Okay.
- 28:25So we've had these levels
- 28:26for three years where we
- 28:27don't know what to do with them.
- 28:28You just get assigned a
- 28:29number at the end of the open.
- 28:30And Amy gets to go, yay,
- 28:31I'm a level eight.
- 28:33And I'm better than all of my friends.
- 28:37And she does it all the time.
- 28:38She texts us her level in
- 28:41every text string and everything.
- 28:43Only the level three.
- 28:46So what if we establish
- 28:49something in this community
- 28:51cup where you can make
- 28:53workouts that are geared
- 28:55for level eights do this
- 28:57level sevens do this level fives do this.
- 29:00And then we translate that
- 29:02to the open and make the
- 29:04open matter more.
- 29:06So the more elite athlete you are,
- 29:08the harder the workout is in the open,
- 29:10but you're all getting the
- 29:11same stimulus levels one through ten.
- 29:17But you can't just like
- 29:18throw that in the open.
- 29:20You have to like establish
- 29:22the levels and and figure
- 29:24out the workout.
- 29:24So you're using the
- 29:25community cup to do that.
- 29:27And then in the future,
- 29:28the open will be divided
- 29:30better so that we can
- 29:32actually meet the needs of every athlete.
- 29:36OK,
- 29:36so let's say I'm let's say I'm level
- 29:38six after after the community cup.
- 29:43so then I'm I'm going to do
- 29:45level six in the open but
- 29:47what how do I get to level
- 29:49seven like I perform high
- 29:51in level six like how will
- 29:53I get to do better and
- 29:55bigger things you know like
- 29:56that just get one muscle up
- 29:58and it moves you up on that
- 29:59that leaderboard when do
- 30:01they assign levels right
- 30:04now just during the open
- 30:06well it's throughout the
- 30:07season because the further
- 30:09you make it in the season
- 30:10the higher your level got
- 30:12When did they change your level?
- 30:16Is there a calendar year?
- 30:18You're level six from now
- 30:19until... We've never been
- 30:20able to get a clear
- 30:21direction as to what the level is,
- 30:23how it happens, when it happens.
- 30:25But if it becomes like a
- 30:27trend thing or some kind of
- 30:30algorithm that over time
- 30:32you just keep building on your level...
- 30:35Or even like deteriorating
- 30:37on your level because
- 30:38you're getting old and you're like,
- 30:39you can't do what you used to do,
- 30:41whatever.
- 30:42Um,
- 30:43so I think that's what would have to
- 30:46happen in the future for my
- 30:48theory to like, you just,
- 30:50you keep building or losing
- 30:53on your level over time.
- 30:55Right.
- 30:55But I'm saying,
- 30:56but if I'm in the open and
- 30:58I can only do level six,
- 31:00because that's my level,
- 31:01how do I progress to a higher, to get,
- 31:04to do the next level?
- 31:06Well,
- 31:06you have to keep improving so that
- 31:08your scores in the open or,
- 31:11or any other event you
- 31:12participate in shows that
- 31:14you are now moving up a
- 31:15level to the next one.
- 31:17So I score high in the open on level six.
- 31:19So then I might be promoted
- 31:21to level seven for the next one.
- 31:23Correct.
- 31:28Is the open,
- 31:28are the open workouts going to
- 31:30be different depending on your level?
- 31:33that was my theory.
- 31:34This is my theory.
- 31:36Got it.
- 31:37Got it.
- 31:39Got it.
- 31:39This is a,
- 31:39a proof concept in the community
- 31:41cup to then bring it to the
- 31:44open because of the biggest complaint.
- 31:46And what Carolyn Lambre
- 31:47talked about this earlier this week,
- 31:49that's been clipped and run
- 31:51is that there's no
- 31:52definition for the open.
- 31:53And so elite athletes and
- 31:56your average Joe's in the gym are,
- 31:59have different reasons for doing the open.
- 32:01And so they can't meet the
- 32:02needs of both the elite
- 32:04athlete and the average Joe's right.
- 32:06Yeah.
- 32:07But if we do it by level and like a level,
- 32:10has a workout that meets
- 32:12the needs they need and a
- 32:14level three can do it and
- 32:15still see how they improve
- 32:17year over year as an average Joe, then we,
- 32:19maybe we can't,
- 32:22but just have a proof of concept first.
- 32:25I'm just so curious on why
- 32:27they even started the levels.
- 32:29Like why now three years later,
- 32:32we're going to do something
- 32:32with these levels.
- 32:34Was this thought out at the beginning?
- 32:36Well,
- 32:36they started it under one CEO and
- 32:40then people got fired and
- 32:42then people got brought back.
- 32:45So there has not been a
- 32:46consistent and a new CEO comes in.
- 32:49There hasn't been a
- 32:49consistent like leadership group that,
- 32:54to maybe follow through on this.
- 32:56And I know I don't use this
- 32:57for them and it's, it is what it is.
- 33:00We don't know if this is the idea that was,
- 33:04you know,
- 33:04brewed three years ago now just
- 33:06coming to light,
- 33:07or if this is something
- 33:08that's been retrofitted to
- 33:11make sense of levels that
- 33:13were created three years ago.
- 33:15Yeah.
- 33:15We don't know the answer to that.
- 33:16Yeah.
- 33:17I'm guessing it's the latter,
- 33:19but I could be wrong.
- 33:21I, if I were to guess,
- 33:22I would say you're right, Kat.
- 33:24I think that it was created
- 33:26by Dave and team under the
- 33:30Rosa led CrossFit.
- 33:34Rosa leaves, Dave gets fired.
- 33:37Level sat out there for a couple of years.
- 33:39Now they're looking at it as like,
- 33:40we have these levels.
- 33:41Can we do something with
- 33:42them to make it work for us?
- 33:44And now they're trying to fit.
- 33:47Whatever that is,
- 33:48retrofit it back into what
- 33:50was created before.
- 33:52And side note,
- 33:53the levels are different or
- 33:56you get levels based on age
- 33:59grouping as well.
- 34:01Right.
- 34:02You have an age group level
- 34:03and you have an open level.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:08David is correct here where
- 34:09he says the levels were
- 34:11supposed to be for events
- 34:12throughout the year.
- 34:13Uh,
- 34:13the event could use the levels as
- 34:14placement instead of a
- 34:15qualifier from what I understand.
- 34:17And it also,
- 34:18so people wouldn't cherry pick and say,
- 34:20uh,
- 34:21and sign up for the intermediate like
- 34:22cherry or like Charlie and
- 34:25be a douche bag and sign up
- 34:26for intermediate when
- 34:28you're really an elite to
- 34:30take home the trophy.
- 34:32Um,
- 34:32if you have a level eight beside your
- 34:34name, no, you're going into elite.
- 34:36Yeah, like years prior,
- 34:38before the levels came out,
- 34:39like Festivus had on their notes,
- 34:43like if you were the top ten in the open,
- 34:45you cannot do Festivus.
- 34:46Right.
- 34:49Right.
- 34:49They even said like if
- 34:52you're a fire breather at your gym,
- 34:53you're not supposed to do Festivus.
- 34:55Yeah.
- 35:01I'm anxious to see if
- 35:02anybody's even going to be
- 35:03interested in this, but.
- 35:04Yeah.
- 35:05Again, it's going to come down to money.
- 35:06And are they doing it because they had,
- 35:11you know,
- 35:12people paying to do the quarterfinals.
- 35:15And now that you've taken that away,
- 35:16you're taking away some income.
- 35:19Jaybird says that's called a sandbagger,
- 35:20not a douche bagger.
- 35:22I think they're interchangeable.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:26Interchangeable.
- 35:28Yeah.
- 35:29And I guess the levels won't
- 35:31include any kind of age group criteria,
- 35:33right?
- 35:33It'll just be your level
- 35:35because then that would be crazy math.
- 35:36That's what I'm saying is
- 35:39that you have two different levels.
- 35:42Yeah,
- 35:42you would have one for your age group
- 35:45and one for the open overall.
- 35:48We already do.
- 35:49You do now.
- 35:51Oh, really?
- 35:52It'll have your level in the open.
- 35:55It'll have your level in your age group.
- 35:58They are tripping over
- 35:59themselves with this one, I think.
- 36:02Wow.
- 36:05Okay.
- 36:05Just to answer,
- 36:07my intent is to do the open, yes.
- 36:11I'm definitely going to sign up.
- 36:12I'm going to sign up.
- 36:13If you're going to sign up,
- 36:14you're going to do it.
- 36:16Yeah.
- 36:16I have to find an affiliate to do it with.
- 36:20I am supporting the open.
- 36:21I have decided that I am
- 36:22supporting the open.
- 36:24I'm going to come and live
- 36:26with Charlie for three
- 36:27weeks to do the open at
- 36:28okay you're a place okay
- 36:30okay you can that's my that
- 36:33may not be the quietest
- 36:34place to live um in
- 36:36columbus the the other two
- 36:38of us probably have quieter
- 36:39houses just to let you know
- 36:41that's why I picked it it
- 36:41was just you know rile it
- 36:44up jump into the fray I can
- 36:47take care of some kids and dogs and
- 36:50Oh, let's go.
- 36:50Well,
- 36:51Charlie needs help with his dog for sure.
- 36:52Yeah, there you go.
- 36:54David says his level is currently blank.
- 36:56I think that might be bad news.
- 37:01I pulled it up.
- 37:02I don't know if you can see it.
- 37:05Go dominate level zero, David.
- 37:07What do you got?
- 37:09I'm level six for the open,
- 37:11but level seven for age group.
- 37:15And then Charlie,
- 37:16you see that other level on there?
- 37:17Just want to make sure you
- 37:18see that other level.
- 37:19Three.
- 37:21How do you find that, Amy?
- 37:23It's on your login on CrossFit.com,
- 37:25and then you go to your
- 37:26competition dashboard.
- 37:28Okay.
- 37:32So Jody says she's on the fence.
- 37:34I usually can't do a movement,
- 37:35which takes me right out of it.
- 37:37Actually,
- 37:38you go to login and then do
- 37:40manage account, and then it shows you.
- 37:43So when I first did the open, Jodi,
- 37:45there was no scale division.
- 37:47When I first did the open,
- 37:48it was RX or nothing.
- 37:51And there were definitely
- 37:52movements that I could not do at the time,
- 37:54but I tried.
- 37:56I tried to do the movements for...
- 37:59For seven,
- 38:00eight minutes straight hanging
- 38:01from a pull-up bar.
- 38:03There are videos out on
- 38:04YouTube from back...
- 38:05Because we weren't an
- 38:06affiliate at the time,
- 38:07so we had to upload videos
- 38:09for every submission.
- 38:11And there are videos out
- 38:12there of me struggling to
- 38:13get a toes-to-bar for eight minutes.
- 38:16But I tried.
- 38:18And what's cool about it is
- 38:19sometimes you don't think
- 38:20you can do it and you...
- 38:22Back then it was like more
- 38:24prevalent that you got your
- 38:25first something because you
- 38:27were forced to go outside
- 38:28your box and try something
- 38:30that you may or may not be able to do.
- 38:33I had friends that snatched
- 38:35more weight than they've
- 38:35ever snatched in their life.
- 38:37It may have been ugly.
- 38:39I don't think it was a snatch.
- 38:40It looked like a snatch and press.
- 38:44The bar was overhead and
- 38:46then locked down it.
- 38:49So and I think that that
- 38:52when we went away from just
- 38:54being an RX open to what it is today,
- 38:58while I get it for the
- 38:59inclusivity and the
- 39:00approachable ness of it for
- 39:02the average Joe's,
- 39:04I think that's when the
- 39:05elite athletes suffered as
- 39:08a qualifier into the games.
- 39:12So because at that point,
- 39:16then the definition got
- 39:18lost as to what we were trying to do.
- 39:20When it was all RX,
- 39:22it was the first part of
- 39:23the qualification to get to
- 39:25the CrossFit Games.
- 39:28And then when it got watered
- 39:31down a little bit,
- 39:32it did all that kind of stuff.
- 39:35Jeff, you might be a two on there,
- 39:37but you might be a level
- 39:39ten in our hearts.
- 39:46so um so yeah so there's
- 39:49that and then oh my gosh we
- 39:54are running along yeah the
- 39:55lad the last little bit is
- 39:57just real quick news is
- 39:58along with this
- 39:59announcement the barbell
- 40:00spin also added that for
- 40:01the first time crossfit is
- 40:03doing something the same
- 40:04for two years in a row and
- 40:06that is they are doing the service cup
- 40:10So just like last year,
- 40:13the only thing is they
- 40:13removed one category from that,
- 40:17which is EMS.
- 40:20The categories are affiliate owner,
- 40:22CrossFit trainer, medical professional,
- 40:25educator, military veteran,
- 40:27active duty military, law enforcement,
- 40:29firefighter, and first responder.
- 40:32CrossFit trainer, that's new.
- 40:35Yeah.
- 40:35It was there last year.
- 40:36So your EMS could be under
- 40:38first responder.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:39Right, or medical professional.
- 40:41Yeah, yeah.
- 40:43I think that's probably what they did.
- 40:52Yeah.
- 40:53So yeah, so that is the same as last year.
- 40:56We'll finish with this comment.
- 40:58Clock says,
- 40:59but the real beef the games
- 41:01athletes have with the
- 41:01Opens is it should be easy for them.
- 41:03Is it that they don't like
- 41:05it interrupting their
- 41:06refined and delicate peaking process?
- 41:10I think they do not like it
- 41:11as a qualification to the
- 41:12games that it is too easy.
- 41:14It is just a cardio test and
- 41:17it should be more skill
- 41:19based as a qualifier to the
- 41:21CrossFit games.
- 41:25But every one of these elite
- 41:26athletes can make the top one percent.
- 41:30I mean, let's be real.
- 41:32Without much effort.
- 41:33Yeah.
- 41:37Sorry, Jay Burch,
- 41:38there is no retired educator.
- 41:40I think once an educator,
- 41:41always an educator.
- 41:45I know there are retired law
- 41:47enforcement that still
- 41:48compete as law enforcement.
- 41:50So I would assume the same
- 41:52would apply for the educator.
- 41:59Well, with that,
- 42:00I know a bunch of us have
- 42:02to get back to work at one o'clock.
- 42:03Yeah, I got to be up.
- 42:05So we are there with that, guys.
- 42:06Thank you so much for being with us.
- 42:08We will see you next time on
- 42:11the Clydesdale Media Roundtable.
- 42:13Bye.
- 42:14Bye.
