- 1:38SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Doing great.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited to uh talk about this movie.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Did you just get off work?
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh literally like a minute ago.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I was sitting I'm working at home right now remotely, so I just closed out and I'm like, I'm ready.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Let's go, let's do this.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you were and yet you were still more prepared than I was going into listen.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: For the for listeners, I was just like rushing to get everything ready and like ran very late on time, and then Ellen was Ellen messaged me, like, are we still on?
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, again, I had such a fear that either I completely got the time wrong or I just messed it up completely.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I'll just assume I'm wrong immediately.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I'm usually really good with time, and like I don't know what just slipped away from me today.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Not to be honest, like time doesn't exist anymore.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I forgot it was a Thursday.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: I have no sense it is.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Well, I was just saying in the group chat that because Britt uh Brit put in about her show being tonight, and I was like, wait, that's tonight?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I thought it was tomorrow.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Oh god, a couple of weeks ago I went to go on a Zoom show that I paid like five dollars for a ticket for, and I was two hours late.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So I was just I didn't realize, and I was just hanging out in the Zoom, like of nothing.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Just like the Zoom was still open.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I was able to just get into the thing, and I was just like, Where is everyone?
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: What is happening?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I don't think I've ever been two hours late for something like that, and I'd shown up.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: It was bad.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: I just like read the the sign wrong or something.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: I just yeah, that's the other thing with the American stuff.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I've really got to keep an eye on like the timings of everything because it's so like sometimes it's east coast, sometimes it's west coast, sometimes it's central for like and then because there's so many comedians in central right now.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I I'm constantly thrown by that.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I've gotten somewhat used to like trying to remember different time zones.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: I I used to work with international students, so a lot of my friends are now back in their home countries, and I used to text them and it would be like 2 a.m.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, why aren't they answering me?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Why am I not answering?
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: What countries were you working with?
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, um, well, so it was through an organization called Education First, and they worked with I think about eight countries.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: So it was, I think Germany, I'm like remembering Germany, Spain, um Taiwan, oh wow uh the Netherlands, Sweden, like all over.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: So I was gonna say all European, but except for Taiwan, I guess.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, it's a it's a mix of things.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Uh this was specifically the exchange students coming in for their exchange year.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: So I was kind of my job was kind of giving them like the orientation into American culture.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was fun.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And you're you're in uh New York, aren't you?
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: So they were.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: So you'd like teaching showing them the all the like what were you doing, showing them all the sites and stuff.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we we actually did a day like that.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: So what it was, we the um the campus that they came into was a little bit upstate ish.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: It was like um people are gonna get mad at me that I called it upstate.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: It's Westchester.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Like West Chester, it's like right above New York.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: It's barely well barely above and anything not the city is like up.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Uh and they we would we would be there, we they would learn about American culture, they would become friends with other international students who were going to the same area as them.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: So a lot of them, like if they were going to California, they would all be in the same group.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So they knew a little bit more and maybe knew someone when they went to their school.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And then on one of the days, we took them down to the city and did a full like touristy day.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, nice.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's fun.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Um I'm guessing you don't do that anymore then.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I uh I work full-time in the fabric industry.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I'm uh Oh wow, that's a like a huge difference.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: There's like a long convoluted way I ended up in art, but I'm here now.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And I like it a lot.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But you also have um well, we can talk about it more at the end of the show, but like you also have a book and everything as well, don't you?
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh I basically work like four jobs.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: That's pretty much I have a full-time job as a graphic designer.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, I also do uh fabric design now, and then this I have a book out called A to Z of Cryptozoology.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So that's my own illustration and comedy and writing on my own stuff.
- 6:36unknown: Thank you.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's that's awesome.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so you have come on today to talk about the movie not another teen movie.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Um so okay, so it has uh let me check.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: It is rated 29% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, and the audience score is 55%.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: You know, I so not great either way.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I when I was looking at different movies, I was shocked to even see the name on the list because it's it's not necessarily a good movie.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start off with that.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: It's not necessarily a good movie, but it is very funny, and by parody standards, it's probably the best spoof movie besides the scary movie franchise.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Uh of the t I would say of the time, I would agree with you.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Of all time, uh possibly not.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: There are there are like many better parody movies.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, no, no, no.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: It does not hold up, but like for some reason in the 2000s, Hollywood was obsessed with spoof movies, just like Scary Movie.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: This was that's true, yeah.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Because that was such a huge deal.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: It became such a big thing, and then this is this is one year after that.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Um so I I'm guessing they kind of like rushed to push some kind of teen movie out, yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Uh around it.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Because there were a lot of teen movies at the time as well.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: There was like a huge it was a big thing.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Um and I I saw this when it came out.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I was too young.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: I would have been twelve.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: But but the weird thing is it's like I was too young, but at the same time, I'm I'm still technically the intended audience around that time.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Well, because it's stupid humor without any like thrills or anything, it's very basic parody where they're the the exact plot line is she's all that.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: That's the entire the movie is that the base plot line is she's all that.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And then they just sprinkle stereotypes throughout it.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, like typical 80s films, like the the sensitive guy, like the mean cheerleader, like stuff like that, and just like they're like bam, here it is, stick them in there.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Like they they follow a format, so it's perfect definitely for the younger audience.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Like I watched it when I was way too young, also.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: But did you say this?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Did you see it when it came out, or did you see it like a long time after?
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I there's a good chance I saw it on like I'm like picturing me sitting on the edge of my bed with like those tiny TVs that only played like a couple of channels.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Like that it was like playing on some channel that was like fizzy, you couldn't really see it fully.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Basically, what she's doing at the beginning of the movie, well not what she is doing, but like yeah, but like that kind of kind of environment where she's like not it's not clear, but but you can tell what's happening, and like yeah, I think you know what is I think the reason why again I thought I was shocked that it was so low was this was really like this movie was like an introduction to me of like parody films and dirty comedy.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: It was something I had never seen before.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: My parents would not let me watch American Pie.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Like that was not gonna happen.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: I think the only time I ever got a glimpse of American Pie was I I army crawled into the living room to like watch my parents were watching, I think, um oh bandcamp, and I just like I like barely saw I was like, I need I wanted to know why they were laughing.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: What is so funny?
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Oh this movie is like so you went into this movie with like no prior knowledge of the teen movie, like any of the teen movies that you are watching.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I know there was it was parodying.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: I don't think I saw even She's All That until maybe eight years after I saw this movie.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I understood like okay, this is funny, this is slapstick, there's like dirty humor, like, yeah, I get I get it's funny, but I didn't get the references.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Did you come to appreciate it more once you knew the references?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Or did you um did you find it different?
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: I I like it a lot more now that I know the references because she's all that is a great movie.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: It's a really it is, it's a really good movie.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: It's a movie.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: It's a really fun rom-com, and they really nail making fun of how ridiculous of a movie it is at the same time, and like the same thing.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I was also saying I have to sorry, I have to say it's very lowly rated low-rated as well.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: It's like 42, 43% or something.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: She's all that?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really, huh.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: I I'm very surprised by how low it is because it's like people love that movie.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: I feel like there's an issue also.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: This is more of a bigger topic, but there's an issue with rating movies if you're not going by subject.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Because like if you're going, like if you rate it just by parody movie, this would be on a high end when something like disaster movie or superhero movie, terrible, would be like at the bottom, or even um vampires suck.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Did you ever see that movie?
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: I never saw it, but the like funny enough, all of those kind of come from the same people.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: So like it's the same, like two guys that make in all of them.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Which makes sense.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but what's so weird about I feel like the problem with those movies is that they're like, oh, we thought the funniest parts of like okay, the the biggest part of not another team movie that I don't like is the bathroom humor.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: That's the I'm not I really I think it's gratuitous and just gross.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: It's unnecessary for this movie.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: It doesn't need it in this because it's like this, it has so much going for it, other than that.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: That it just to sprinkle that in, it's just kind of like tones it down.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if they cut just that one scene out, I think it would be like a perfect parody movie.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: That I skip it.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: I skip I skip that scene, and I also skip the scene where um they're they're making fun of never been kissed, and it's the old woman making out with the sister, and it's just too much.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: It is that those two were like a lot, especially like watching it at 10 a.m.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: this morning, it was like I wasn't prepared for saliva this early in the morning.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it without that, and I think that's the problem with those other movies, is that they're like they think that that's the funniest part of it is the sex and the the bathroom humor, but no, it's the parody part of it.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: That's the strong part, yeah, and they miss that in the other things.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Um, so like you said, it's this it's basically they go, they use the premise of she's all that for the the baseline plot of the movie.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So it's basically the the popular jock makes a bet that he can turn the ugliest, like the not even the ugliest girl in school, but like the the worst.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: The worst girl, yeah, the worst the the hardest choice in school into the prom queen.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: And then surrounding that they they sprinkle in loads of parodies of every other teen movie you can think of.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Uh so you got the American Pies, you've got the uh what they call Breakfast Club, um Ten Things I Hate Autou.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Ten Things I Hate About You to an Extent, yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, I gotta admit, that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie where he's singing Janie's Got a Gun.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's so great.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: And they tackle it on the ground, it's just so funny.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so like oh, and then there's Vosty Blue.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I'm looking, I'm literally looking at a picture of Chris Evans with like whipped cream on himself.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: So how could you not like a movie without that part in it?
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Having Chris Evans covered in whipped cream, like iconic.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: That's one scene that like has always stuck with me as well.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Well, once you see that, you can't forget it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And it's weird because he's a very big Hollywood star now, and you go back and watch this, and you're just like, I can't believe he did this.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Like, did you know this is his this is his debut movie?
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: This is his very first movie.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: They looked at this and went, that's Captain America, right then.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Well, no, they looked at this and went they looked at this and went, that's um the guy from uh Fantastic Four because he went on to do that after this.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Which also was a failure of a movie.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: He went on to do Fantastic Four after this, and then he managed to get Captain America.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Which is amazing.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: That he went from this to Fantastic Four to Captain America.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: He just skipped a bunch of steps, he just jumped right in.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And he looks like obviously he's in shape here, but he looks so tiny here compared to what I'm used to.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Well, he must be what like 10 years younger here or he's gotta be about 20.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Uh so wait, 2001, he would have been yeah, 20.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Exactly 20.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So maybe he's like 19 or something when they're finding it.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Um but there are so many parodies in this movie of like and the what I like about this movie as well is they bring in the a lot of the people from those parodies.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: They bring them back.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: So they bring back Molly Ringwald, they bring back the the principal from uh Breakfast Club, they bring back um they bring in Melissa Joan Hart at one point.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Uh it's great when those actors can laugh at themselves about it.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it's like a fun little cameo to do that.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Like Molly Ringwald's part at the end is the best because she she calls out all the bullshit that she literally dealt with in her movies.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: It's so funny.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Um, so how many times have you seen this?
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Do you think?
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Recently, I only saw it, re-watched it to talk about it now to get like a reminder of it, but I think when I was younger, probably a lot.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Like again, it was one of those like you just watch and watch and watch.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you just put it on for just to have in the background sometimes, even it's okay.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: So, like, I grew up with a lot of comedy in my house.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Like, my dad raised me on Three Stooges and Monty Python.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what I was watching very young, like and I started watching like adults swim at way too early, probably like eight.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I just so like I think by the time I was like 10, 12, I really did crave like whatever the next step of like this ridiculous side of comedy.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: So once I got a hold of this, I was like, this is it, like this.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I love this.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: So did you go on to watch a lot of other parody movies then?
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Uh well I I did finally get to when I got a little older.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: I think I watched I know um um American Pie isn't a parody movie, it's more of like a romp, I guess is the word for it.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Like a romp.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Um but I did try other uh parodies.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: I the only one that comes to mind that I think was somewhat good was uh date movie.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you ever saw that one.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: I thought it was okay because they make fun of the bachelorette on it, and I think that's like the main that's where they follow.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: But okay.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: I saw I must have seen it at the time where I didn't even know what the bachelorette was.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: So I yeah, it meant nothing.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: That movie means nothing to me.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Again, it's it that's the thing, is I can't really name ones that I went on to watch because this was this was it.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Like this was the uh the blueprint for me.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: So you didn't go back and watch like the older ones then even or so like the airplanes and blazing saddles and all those?
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: You know, you know what's funny.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: I don't in my mind, I don't think those as parodies.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: I think they're more like, I guess this is getting technical, but maybe like a spoof film, like but I grew up watching like Airplane, and yeah, I grew up watching Airplane, like there is a difference, there's definitely a difference between them.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because Airplane isn't really based on anything besides their own storyline that someone's going on a plane, and then there's i it is based on uh it's based on those disaster movies from the 50s, and it I think they actually take the same plot as a specific I think they take an the actual plot of one of them.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: And then they just turn it into a spoof.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: But uh Blazing Saddles is a little bit different where it's like obviously.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Well, you know what it is.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Blazing Saddles is a very specific type of movie where it's more one of the first times, I guess, making fun of real life things and historical people, yeah, and like pointing out the ridiculousness of racism and sexism and all of those different things, but throwing it in a western setting, yeah, and just making it like modern jokes in a historical setting, really.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: So that's why when when I think of the word like the parody movies, I think these ridiculous ridiculous um C-list movies like like this movie.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I know I do know what you're saying.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Um so I guess I guess what you were saying was that you didn't really grow up with uh watching these teen movies until late you didn't watch them until later on, a lot of them.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: So uh do you do you have a favorite now out of them?
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, um I I definitely love She's All That.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: I think that's like a comfort movie to like go back and watch.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Um I'm trying to think.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: No, I think She's All That is probably the one I really like the most.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: I do love Ten Things I Hate About You.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Um it's also like the actors in it are just it's so sweet.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And like the Heath Ledger and um Joseph Gordon Levitt is in it too.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And so cute in it.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: So young.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, but they're like, we just want to pinch this.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: Like a little baby.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Um and then there's American Pie as well, which is just like the complete opposite of that, which is I love I haven't seen American Pie in in a while, but I loved American Pie around this especially around this time when this came out.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I watched, I feel like I watched this stuff all in the wrong order, but like it didn't change my experience of it because like the first American Pie movie I ever watched was Beta House.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And oh no.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: It honestly okay, it wasn't that bad.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: It wasn't it's not that bad.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: It's not as bad as the newest one, Book of Love.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, terrible, terrible, terrible, yeah.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Really bad.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: But like, I don't know, it was a it's a great sequel to the um the naked mile.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Like it's a great, like, because it's the same people just in a new, like a new scenario.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: These are not the American Pie movies I'm talking about.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Are you talking about the classic classic ones?
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the original ones.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the original casting.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Is it bad that I've seen these?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Is that I do okay, so I do like the original American pies.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: I think they're very funny, and they also they were also kind of like a blueprint for these um rough, dirty movies, like because it also had like a solid storyline that they were following.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: I feel like a lot of romp movies miss out on having a core story, and they're just like, let's make it dirty, and that's comedy, right?
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but there's the the the whole thing around it, it has to it still has to have some kind of structure to it and some kind of purpose that they they're kind of going to try and attain at the end of it.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Uh something they're working towards.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Where so like that's why American Pie I think works a lot better.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: It has the heart behind it that they don't have in I don't think they necessarily have them in the in the spin, like the straight to DVD ones.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: You know what it is?
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Uh that sort of thing is I I think I just picked whatever, you know, when you're younger and you don't have this was also before like I had internet real access.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Of course, yeah.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: This was like to the library and being like, uh, do you guys have American pie?
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Like, they're not gonna give you we have one of them.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: You're a child, get out.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Like so, like you at the time you take what you can get, you see if it comes on TV, you watch it.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: So, like, I do agree those are more just funny because they're ridiculous and dirty movies.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: But yeah, the first two American Pies have a solid storyline that they're following.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Like, one is get it, what is it, great getting laid before graduating is the first one.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then the second one they incorporate into this movie as well.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah, that's true.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: You have like the the what is it, the stereotype of the desperate virgin, like that's yeah.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: But that's the that is the only one they incorporate because because this came out I guess the same year as the second one, they obviously didn't have anything to spoof off of the second one, so they literally just use the plot of the first first one.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: But interestingly enough, um there is the opening scene in this, it kind of mirrors the opening scene in American Pie 2 by accident.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Huh.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna try they didn't even they're kind of similar, but they're not like but that but they came out the same year, so like there's no way they would have had the time to like to do that, yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe they just guessed well.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: They knew that was like a typical joke.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Just it is kind of ridiculous.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Um but other than that, they they don't do a whole lot surrounding American Pie in this movie.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, no, they mostly just use the younger brother as the and the the two friends as kind of like literally they're just a replacement of the main characters from American Pie, like the sensitive guy who's in love with his girlfriend.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: And then you've got the then you've got the the guy that's like almost like a spitting image of Oz, Chris K Chris Klein character, yeah.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Um which is very weird how similar he is, and then and then you've got the problematic one, which is Sam Levine as a white guy who thinks he's Asian or wants to be Asian.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I think what they do well in that movie is that they don't appease him at all.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Anytime he tries to be it, someone like insults him or literally kicks him in the face, and he's like, that's not okay, like don't do that.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, although I wish they hadn't had a a Chinese man kick him in the face.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right, kick him in the face.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not again.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: This this movie does not hold up, and it definitely was not okay then.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't think that was okay.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: There's definitely team there's definitely problematic stuff in this movie, but it's stuff that you like kind of it was expected of the time.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like a th they didn't it's weird because like this this came up again on uh when we were recording with when I was recording with Brit on the previous episode, we were talking about how in Little Nikki how many like gay jokes there were in that movie, and how of like of the time you go through like 2000 to 2008, and it was like a very specific period of time where they had like gay joke, gay joke, gay joke, and it was all okay of the time like all okay in of like that was the norm, and then you look back now and you're like, how was that ever acceptable?
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: The thing is, I think that there are certain movies that deal with jokes like that with grace and do it in a way that it's not making fun of uh a race or a gender or a sexuality.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Like I'm thinking back to something like what I consider is the greatest comedy of all time, and a lot of people do, you know, Animal House.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: Like and they do talk about race and they talk about sex and stuff like that, but they do it in a way where they're more making fun of the racism rather than race itself.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: And I I think a lot of like specifically like this movie does not handle it with grace, it's not it's not necessarily well done.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: So I think what that comes down to with this one is that it's not there's no message in this movie, it just it's a parody for parody's sake.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: So like they they're literally just parodying what you get in other movies, so they don't kind of try and fixate on oh, we should actually say something with the what with what the joke is here, we're just making the joke.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're making fun that the the guy who's literally calls himself the token black guy, and that's his character, and like that's all he does aware of it, yeah.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um and oh, there is actually a funny scene where he shows up to the party and it's um the other black guy's there as well, and he's like, What are you doing here?
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: I'm supposed to be the other guy, and the other guy is um Sean Patrick Thomas, who is like from uh um Save the Last Dance and like a lot of other like teen movies as well.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And so they just like kind of trade off.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Like, this is my party, like I'm that's very funny.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Because around that time, these two were were also like I feel like they were probably competing for a lot of roles because they were all they were both in a lot of these movies.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, what's what's his name from oh god, I I should know his name.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: He's on um Psyche.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: He was in She's All That, I believe.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: The original Yes, yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: I know what you mean.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: I can't remember his name.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Um here it says Carmen Dual Hill.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh Carmen I think his name is Dual Hill.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Duole Hill or Duet?
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: I can't I've never been able to say that name.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't know.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Because I've never heard it I've never heard it pronounced either.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: But he he's literally that role that they're making fun of in the movie.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: So I feel like they were kind of like all around at the same time.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: They those people were probably like all auditioning for the same roles in these movies.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Because also like one one weird thing about Sean Patrick Thomas is like he is much older than the rest of them, but like even in Save the Last Dance, he's like a good ten years older than Julia Stiles.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Well you know all of these all of these people in these teen movies look ten years older than an actual teenager, and it's I think they also they make that very clear in appearance in this movie to make fun of like how old all these people look.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: Never more so than with the elderly woman from Never Been Kissed.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: That's Drew Barrymore just as an elderly woman.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Because she's supposed to be like I think like 30 and never been kissed or something like that.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: And in this they make her 80.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, honestly, that that movie itself is pretty problematic too.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Because like it is when you look back on it now, isn't it?
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: It makes me very uncomfortable when I rewatch it because like the teacher is into the student who he thinks is that age.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we were like, then people are like, he should be with her, and I'm like, no, no, not if she's a 16-year-old kid.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely not.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uncomfortable.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Um that is that is definitely one that does I haven't seen that in a long time, but I I don't think that's gonna hold up on a rewatch.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I don't think so either.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Um and then we have so who else we got?
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: We got Jane uh Janie and Jake, who are the two lead characters.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Um Chris Evans and Shylale Lee, Kylally, I don't know how to say her name, but she um I read that she was on so she's supposed to be like this very innocent girl in this movie, right?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: I read that she said that she was on cocaine the entire Oh my god Jesus what to get through this movie I don't know the entire time she was recording.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, and she also got engaged on the set of this.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Imagine that being your story.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I got engaged on the set of not another teen movie.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: How romantic.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: I think she's very religious now as well.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Um that was like whiplash.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the amount of info you just gave me.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: So I I just remember reading a lot of info on this.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Um then we've got um Catherine, who is his sister, who is playing the cruel intentions character uh Sarah Michelle Geller plays.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Um spoof of that character who is um in cruel intentions, it's a stepsister, but in this it's the literal blood sister.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Which I think obsessed.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: It's it's very gross, but I understand the joke that they're making with it's gross, but I think it's fun, it's a funny joke to make in this.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, and that the father he he hears that he broke up with his girlfriend and he goes, I found someone for you, and he's like, Beverly, get in here, and he's like, That's my mom.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Like, what are you doing?
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: It's just like both sides, but he's like, What is going on in this family?
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: I do I always love a joke as well about of like the father wanting the son to go off to like a his college, and it's always in these teen movies as well.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: And I do I do love this the the spoof of that in this.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: They did that, I think that's from She's All That, and they also did it years later in what is it, a Cinderella story?
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Cinderella story.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: Previously on this podcast, yeah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's so funny to me too, because I'm like, oh boo-hoo, your parents want to give you a full ride to a very to Princeton.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: This is one of the top five schools in the country, but zero loans afterward, and you're like, I don't want your life, Dad.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Like, what the funny thing is here, he never like says what he wants to do as well.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: He just doesn't want that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Um and then who else have we got?
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: We got yeah, Ricky, who is obsessed with Janie.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: He's basically the um Ducky character.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: It's Ducky, isn't it?
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: From Pretty and Pink.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: So to be uh, I we could talk about this now or later, but I hate Pretty and Pink.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: I tried once I'm not a fan.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: I'm not a fan.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, I don't understand why people love it so much.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I I do like a lot of 80s movies.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Like I loved uh Breakfast Club, I love um St.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Elmo's Fire, like those are all like really I really like those movies.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: But when I watch this, it is just unbearable.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Mostly there's no real plot.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: It's just like she has two men, one who's obsessed with her, but he's also an ass about it.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Like you just he's he's a um what's the term they use for like it's like he's just basically like a he's obsessed with her, he's being a creep and just like is not she's clearly not interested and has said no multiple times.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: And then you have the other guy who's like a rich ass who just like sleeps with her and then is super mean to her and then is like, why isn't she with me?
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: and we're like and then she goes back with the bad guy, like what yeah, nonsense.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: I don't like that.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: I think it's the one that holds up the least out of all of John Hugh's movies I over time.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: I don't I I saw it very late on, um, a long time after I'd seen like a lot of his other movies.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: So I saw a lot of his movies when I was like a teenager.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Um so Breakfast Club, uh Ferris Bueller, all of those ones.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Um and I I really enjoyed them, and then I saw this one like in my twenties, and I was kind of like, uh start.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: I I can see a lot of problematic stuff in this movie, and I don't really enjoy it.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it definitely doesn't.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, I have always found that character very annoying in in itself as well.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: So in in this movie, like I like what they do with him.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that they make him a crazy person who's clearly like what was he read the poem from Ten Things I Hate About You, but but to a point of stalker-ish.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: I think even when he's reading it, they'll uh like someone from the class ass that she's not interested.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: I love the last scene too, where he gets basically beaten up and like he's running through the airport, and they're like, Someone already did that! Like get out.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Um and then we've got um so those are the characters, and then the last one we oh no, we've got two more that I want to bring up.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: We got um Amanda Becker, played by Lacey Shabert, who is the Jennifer Love Hewitt type character that uh Sam is in love with.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, the the slow motion girl?
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the slow motion girl.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Uh that I believe is from um what is the name of the movie?
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Oh damn, I can't remember the name of the name.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Can't yes, thank you.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Can't hardly wait.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: It's from that one.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: That's what she's spoofing.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: But the funny thing is, like Lacey Chaver and Jennifer Love Hugh have worked together as well on stuff, and so like just making fun of her friend.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Um and then the last one is Ariola, who is the well it's that's a clear American pie reference.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Like it is, yeah, it's obviously American pie.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: It's the foreign exchange girl who doesn't understand American ways and is just like naked the entire time.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's just there to be a sex object.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, doesn't move the plot forward at all.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: So those are basically the characters we have in it, and then and then there's just like a lot of basically there's a lot of like random scenes where they kind of drive the plot forward through, she's all that, but then they sprinkle in everyone, all these characters in it, and so they like Jake originally.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Jake is getting left, he's getting dumped by uh his his girlfriend um Priscilla, who is the like the bring it on style girl, like sort of girl, I think.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: I love I love that line I was watching this morning, and she says she's making fun of the bring it on.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: She goes, This is not uh a chirocracy, and I will deal with the uh chira chirok senses or something like that.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: She keeps trying to shove it into words, it's it's very funny.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: Because I I also love bringing it on as well.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, like any that any kind of spoof of that is funny.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: Um, I would say I just thought of a spoof movie that actually I do like.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Have you ever seen Fired Up?
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: No, I've heard really good things.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: You if you like bring it on, you'll probably like Fire It Up.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Aaron Christian Olsen from this, isn't he in that?
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, the one who plays the um the like cocky blondes guy.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's one of the main characters in that.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: So I'll need to watch that then.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: I've heard I've heard good things about that.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: Um so yes, she's this she's the kind of she's like a mix of the bring it on world plus she's all that.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Um so he she dumps him for this the American American beauty cameraman and his bag.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: And so because of that, he's like on his own, and that's what kind of kicks off the bet essentially to um to find the prom quit so he can make anyone prompt queen, it doesn't matter.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Um and he makes that bet with Austin, and they decide they set so they like they they go through and they like they point out all the all these people they could pick, and it's like um there's someone with what is what's she got?
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: She's got like um I think a hunch.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: I think Oh, there's a hunch, yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: There's a girl with a hunch back.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: There's a girl with like what's the term when she's like she can't be in the sunlight.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, um uh the albino.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Albino, yeah.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And then there's the twins that are like con there's the conjoined twins as well.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: See, like, this is where it comes up like it this it the problems.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: We got some problems right there.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Like that's it's that's rough.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: That those three jokes are not really jokes, they're just people.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just like it's like that's awful.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: And then they're just like they settle on Janie because she's got paint cover overalls and glasses and a ponytail.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: But it's so accurate to she's all that.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: That's the funny thing about it.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: It's just like there's nothing wrong with the girl and she's all that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, in any of these movies, think about like Princess.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: I I feel like movies like that give complexes to people who wear glasses because you're telling us like okay, I literally have curly hair and glasses and watch me watching the princess diaries, and they're like, those are the two things that made her ugly.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay, fine.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Those are the things that made Anne Hathaway ugly.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm also done with movies that are trying to convince me that people like Anne Hathaway or Sandra Bullock are ugly.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Why do they keep trying to trick me?
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Miscongeniality.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: Um, oh god, the one with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, uh the heat.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: You're telling me Sandra Bullock is an ugly person?
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Lies.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Why do they keep doing that with her?
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Like we know.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: We all know.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: We don't we're not trying Stop putting glasses on her.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: That's even with glasses, not she's not ugly with glasses.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: Um But you so that they make fun of that and then he like um this is the point where he reads out that poem about about ten things I love about Janie.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Um and then we get that toilet humor because the boys go insert like those three boys, they like they're trying to be like sneak into the locker room.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: It's supposed to be like Porky's, it's like uh Which is a movie I always hated.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: I've never liked Porkies.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: Truly a disgusting film.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Like I like again, I love like these like very like old dirty movies, but there's nothing really Porky's is revolting.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's nothing really redeeming about that movie.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's really gross.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: A couple of them that really don't hold up is that and Revenge of the Nerds as well from the 80s.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: That I rewatched that recently, and there are some funny jokes in it, but there's too many problems with it, especially the whole um, you know, when he pretends to be the boyfriend scene.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: I don't even want to say it, it's just really fucked up.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: Ooh, excuse my language.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: It's fine as we I don't curse often, so when I do, I'm I shocked myself.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, no, it's that it definitely doesn't hold up.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot of like famous people in that film, too.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: Like, isn't um God, the main actor has been in a lot of different things.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: But that's besides the point.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: But and they made a lot of those movies too.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: A lot of Revenge of the Nerds and Yeah, yeah.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: And they tried to reboot it like about a decade ago, I want to say, and then it never ended up happening, but I remember like it being a thing that they were gonna like try and bring it back.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: But like, why would you even try?
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: It's not worth bringing that back.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: I also think we're kind of past a point where that's no longer an interesting storyline, like the docks versus the nerds.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it made sense like a thing now.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: It's not as much of a thing.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: There is hierarchies, I think, in high school.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's definitely hierarchies, but like there's a there's a blending of like what they like they kind of make fun of it in 21 Jump Street.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: I was about to say that.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: It's like 21 Jump Street makes fun of that.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: Sorry, girl.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: Where it's like it's not a thing anymore, it's like it's kind of surpassed that where it's like the the the nerds are considered like normal, cool people, yeah, and the jocks are like not necessarily the coolest people anymore.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and it's something like Just because you're a sporty doesn't mean that you're popular, yeah.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: And I think like the only movie that kind of has that theme that holds up again is something like Animal House, where it's not just nerds versus jocks, it's the industry, the government basically, or like the school versus the individuals, and it's more of like anarchy, like entering the realm and fighting against what's considered normal.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: So, like that I think works because it's it's making more it's more of against the concept rather than just a stereotype versus a stereotype.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: That makes sense, yeah.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Um so like yeah, again, like this like we were saying, this is the porky essentially the swoop of porkies, this scene.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Um which is just it's revolting.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: It's like they they go and they they're trying to like sneak into like look at the girls in the locker room, so they sneak into the vent and they end up watching a girl on the toilet, and the toilet everything they collapse and they the toilet collapses as well, and they fall through the whole thing into the room where he's doing the poem about 10 things I hate or ten things I love about Janie, and then just shit goes everywhere.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I skip again, I skip over that part.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: I don't watch it, it's just it's yeah, no.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, and then and then it immediately so it's two problematic things back to back.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: So it goes from that that scene, which is disgusting, and then it's cut straight to the cheerleading tryouts with the girl with Tourette's.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, also again, another ableist joke that's very uncomfortable.
- 48:11SPEAKER_00: But they again around that time they loved to do that joke because I remember it in Juice Bigelow as well.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: I was about to say that Yeah, Amy Polar.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Amy Polar plays.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: Amy, that was Amy Polar?
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: That's Amy Polar.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: No! I can double check, but I'm pretty sure.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: Amy, what are you doing?
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: Amy Polar.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: You're probably right.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's her and Deuce Bigelov.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I didn't even know she was an idiot.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she just plays that one character.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: And like the j it's the joke is is that he brings her to or the date to a baseball game because that's where everyone curses, and like in like it's just still not funny enough to do that.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: It's like it's not, yeah.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: No, it has to be smarter, yeah.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to show that he's got heart or whatever, but like no.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: No, you're just terrible.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: You're still putting this, you're still making her the butt of the joke in this movie.
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: Um and then we get the uh you get that weird like varsity blues thing for like the football scene where he's like having a flashback to thinking about Marty.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: Oh well, it's not even uh Varsity Blues, it's supposed to be um Rudy.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: Because it's Marty, this this young guy, and he's like um very skinny, and then he's like gets put he gets he gets to like gets the touchdown, but immediately gets like split in two by the by the other team.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: And so like Chris Chris Evans has got like PTSD for a bit.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Anyways, I love that one thing that's good is they make fun of the coach because in every football movie there's always this screaming crazy coach who doesn't really tell them what to do and just yells at them for being bad.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: Like um just says goddamn it the entire time.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, um there's another, I just remembered a s a parody movie that I actually like.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: Um they're called it's called the Oh my god.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: I will I will remember it.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: It's a football one.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: It's the outcast outcasts, the um God, I think.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: I think I know what you're talking about.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: I think I know what you mean, but I do not remember the title.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: The comebacks, they're called it's called the comebacks, yeah.
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: Um and they make fun of all of the different like typical movies like that.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: Like the longest yard is like a big one of it.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: Itself that's a weird movie itself.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: Um it's also a good movie.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Um but we get the Breakfast Club after this, which is just a fun scene of just the like the principal coming in, giving them detention one after the other, and they're just like for no reason, and but it's just a re- he's just rehashing his role from the Breakfast Club because literally him.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: Uh so it's just nice, it's just like a nice little uh little moment with that.
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: Um then Chris Evans goes and asks his sister for help, and we get the whole like uh cruel intentions thing of like her grinding on him, and and that's when we find out it's his sister, which is yeah, weird.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: It's so gross, but it does make me laugh.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: Um just the line, oh which uh we're we're related and she's like only by blood.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: There are some well-written lines throughout this, like very clever moments.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: One thing I have to bring up about that though is that he um apparently he found that like tough to film because because she kept grinding on him and he was like very turned on.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: I hate that.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: I could have lived a long life not knowing that information.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: It's in the trivia on IMDb.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: Um I I'm just laughing because like 260 out of 267 people found this interesting.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: They all clicked yes, thank you.
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: Um and we get the Janey's Got a Gun scene, which is very funny because he it's just a ru it's it's making fun of um Ten Things I Hate About You when Heath Ledger gets up and starts singing uh uh what's the song?
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: Um it's um I know the song, I just can't place the title.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: Um doesn't matter, you know it doesn't matter.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Um so he starts singing that, and and then they all everyone there's like she's got a gun, get out and they like run away, and then the police taser her.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: Um he does his like whip cream I don't know how it leads into it, but he's like doing his whipped cream thing here.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: I think she oh, because there's a scene, I think, before that, where he goes to protect the brother.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: That's from um she's all that, yeah, and he accidentally gets punched and then beats the crap out of the younger brother.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so she goes over to his place to be like, please leave me alone.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: She's like she goes over to say please leave me alone, yeah.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Oh yeah, because he goes, Do you want a snack?
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: And she's like, No, no, I'm gonna get us a snack.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: And then she says something about it, and he goes, No, it's a banana split.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: And she goes, Oh yeah, she says she's she doesn't like Sundays, and he goes, It's not a Sunday, it's a banana split, and she goes, I don't like them either, and leaves.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but when he turns around, there's a banana.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: Um but this is the point where they go to uh they set up Preston's party, which is just like the typical high school party of like some at someone's house, some rich kid's house.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that's definitely the Ferris Bueller parody, too.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because like you have the mute playing in the background, the um the theme music from Ferris Bueller.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: I kind of wish they'd done a little bit more with Ferris Bueller, actually, because it's so it's so iconic as well.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a lot to do there.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of different scenes that they could have done.
- 54:42SPEAKER_00: Um but they yeah, they all go to they're they're gonna go to Creston's party, and there's but they have the makeover she's all that scene where Catherine goes over to help and like does her makeup for her and then she comes out and reveals herself, but as she's doing that, she falls, like the stairs collapse because she's got she lives in like this really cheap house.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: Um they do the slow motion walk down the she does the slow motion walk and then the stairs just collapse on her and she just like falls through the floor.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: It's supposed to be like she's quirky, like because in the original one she just slips a little, and she just like headfirst into the floorboards.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I forgot she actually slips and she's all that, yeah.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: Um and then we get oh yeah, the first kiss scene, which is disgusting.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: Um and then Janie jumps in the water and sober, so yeah, sober because she's like he gave her he gave her a non-alcoholic beer, and then Pristina shows up and she like pours water on her, even though she's drenched in water and she starts crying, which is just really funny.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: I always love stupid stuff like that.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the the dramatics of the whole thing.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, every time Janie cries in this is very funny, actually.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: She does like the flailing arms kind of like ridiculous cry.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: Um and and the guy tries to do a slow clap, and then Melissa Joan Hart shows up.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that's I love this bit throughout the whole thing, the guy trying to do the slow clap, and that every time he does it, it just will not work.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just complete wrong timing.
- 56:31SPEAKER_00: And she's like, you'll know when you need to do it.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: Um but he's also he's from Ten Things I Hate About You.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 56:39SPEAKER_00: So in Ten Things I Hate About You, I believe he is the guy whose house party it is.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: Oh the one where she's dancing on the table at that point, right?
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: I believe it's his house party.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so they Jake eventually asks her to prom.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: She says yes.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: Um and there's a scene, this is really problematic, which is the uh the bring it on, like stolen cheers from the from the black women.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: It does not hold up.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: It does not hold up.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: It's a direct it's directly making fun of bring it on.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: I know you know that's the story, but it definitely might it goes too far, I think.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_00: And we'll leave it at that.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Um, and Mr.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: T is in this.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: For no reason whatsoever, Mr.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: T is in this.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: I don't remember this part while I'm the wise janitor.
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, isn't that supposed to be like um what's what movie is that from?
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: Or is it just like a temporary?
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe just like the karate kid, or I don't know.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 57:56unknown: Yeah.
- 57:57SPEAKER_00: Just the wise I I don't know.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: I don't know who it's supposed to be who he's supposed to be, but he's the wise janitor and he gives Jake advice.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: And even though he gives them advice, they still lose the game because he throws a terrible pitch.
- 58:10SPEAKER_00: Not pitch, but like throws a terrible pass.
- 58:12SPEAKER_00: Um and while all that's going on, Austin tells uh Janie a secret uh in front of Jake, and he's like uh he's like I'll tell I'm gonna tell Janie all about what everything and he whispers to her and then Jake confesses to everything, and then Austin was like, I didn't actually say anything, I said I was gonna tell I said I was gonna say a secret, but I was whispering, pretending to say a secret, but so long that Jake thought that you were gonna Jake's gonna think that's a good thing.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: Some of his lines throughout the whole thing are very funny.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: He'd be like, uh, how's it going?
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: Uh Mr.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: not first string anymore, who used to be first string.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: He's very funny in this.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Very convoluted sentences for no reason.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: He's he is the Paul Walker of this movie, though.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: Like he's he's playing, he's making fun of Paul Walker essentially in like those those movies, but it it works really well.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: Um then they cut to uh uh the prom tonight's song.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Just that is oh yeah, it's so ridiculous.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: But I read that that it's all like literally sung by the cast.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: Um they didn't have to like dub over anyone.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: They make a big deal out of saying that in this trivia.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: It's like it wasn't that great.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: It was like No, I think that's part of the bit is that it's not supposed to be good, yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: But uh what I mean is like they didn't have to say that in the trivia.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: Um and Good Charlotte, who were like huge at the time, are the the house band, like the the prom band.
- 59:59SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you remember them or not.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, I know Good Charlotte.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: I'm like think I was trying to think of there's a movie, uh different bands.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: It might have been, I don't know if it's before or after this movie, but it's the Scotty doesn't know song.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: Do you know that?
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: Euro Trip.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Euro Trip.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: And that's what I was thinking of because I can't remember if there's such weird stuff in that movie, too.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_01: Was it Matt Damon plays the front of that even though it's not here?
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know if Good Charlotte being there is like a reference to like having a weird pop punk band.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: Um it was just a very big thing to do it.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: I think they do it in American Pie as well at some point, and they like they they did it in a lot of those movies.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: Um I think she's all that Ush is the DJ and yeah, it's some weird stuff, but like they basically like they were very big at the time, and then Eurotrip was like three years later, I think.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: So like yeah.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's like there's just no correlation, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: Um but the kid goes to give I can't remember his name, but the the little brother goes to give uh Amanda the letter confessing his love.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: The slow-mo girl.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: He goes up to her to confess his love and she's like, Do you think you that's disgusting?
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Do you think I'd sleep with I'd sleep with every guy who gives writes me a note confessing their love?
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: No, I give them handshots.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: It's such a great quick line, and then just it it completes that storyline.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's their whole storyline.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: And then the other storyline that gets completed with those is the is the um the Oz character is um he he's like very nervous and everything, and he he gets approached by Catherine who tells him about uh how she's like, Oh, I just wish a guy would love me for who I am, and I wish a guy would shit on my chest.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I you know what is I feel like in these movies talking about bathroom humor can be funnier than actually seeing it.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: I agree, I agree.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that that joke in itself is just such a quick, stupid line.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Like he's like, he thinks it's romantic, like aw.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: But like, if they cut something that we saw something, I'd be like, this is horrible.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: I don't yeah, I would not want to see it.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: I'm glad they didn't show anything like that.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: Um Jake becomes oh no, there's a really great joke actually where they're all dancing and everything, everyone's dancing, and they're doing extravagant nuts, and then uh Josh Radner goes, Oh, well, it's amazing how uh they're all pro how everyone at the school is a professional dancer.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: He was a great um like breaking the fourth wall thing.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: Like he does it three times.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: He does it at the beginning where he splits the jocks and the nerds up, and the jocks are wearing shirts that say J-O-C-K-S.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah and um that he does it again with the slow-mo when he's like this she has to go in slow-mo.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then doing it again there is great.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I forgot he was in this movie as well, and he showed off.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh yeah, it's him.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: Completely forgot.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: It's funny when these people get like big roles, like really, really big roles.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_00: That was only like a few years after this as well, he would have got that.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's true.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_01: I didn't even think of that.
- 1:03:37unknown: Yeah.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_00: So he would have gone like, yeah.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: He's gone from basically like a a couple of lines in a movie to like the star of a two.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_01: Um a very successful show.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_00: Um but Jake becomes prom king, and they're worried that uh that uh what's her name's gonna become Prom Queen because he's made a bet with with his sister, basically, and it ends up being that there's a tie, and so you think oh, it's gonna go to like uh whoever like Janie and uh the other girl, but it actually goes to the uh third conjoined twins.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_01: Um bit.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_00: Um and Austin runs away to the hotel, and you think he's taking Janie with her with him, and so Jake goes running after her, and then her f her what's it what's the guy's friend yeah.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: Oh what's his name again?
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: We just had it.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, he makes is uh Ricky.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: Ricky runs after Ricky runs after it as well uh after them as well because he's like, oh no, but I've I've been in love with her longer.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_00: He's like, Yeah, but I'm the cool guy and I'll just apologise and it'll be fine.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: Um so they run after, and Austin's in the hotel, but he's with Priscilla.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: He's actually sleeping with Priscilla.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_01: And the uh the bad guy who's recording.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, the bad guy's recording.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_00: I forgot about that.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: They're just all really creepy.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: And my bag.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: And my bag, yeah.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_00: Um and so he goes running off to her house, and her dad is just like doing some kind of war thing.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_00: It tells him that I don't know what he's doing there, but he's just like pretending to be pretending to be in war or whatever.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: And he tells her tells him that Janie's uh going to Paris, I guess, to pursue art.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: And she so he go he runs off to the airport and he makes the big sp he he makes the big speech about like, oh I'm
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: I'm in love with a girl.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm in love with this girl, and if I don't get through there, I'm gonna lose her forever.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: And then all they're all like, go to her.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_00: Let him they let him run through security.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_01: And then Ricky, who I think had been hit by a bus at this point.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Ricky is like struggling.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: He's he's holding on to life.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: So it's the same thing and gets kicked out.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: Um and then Molly Ringmold shows up while he's trying to give the speech to to Janie.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: And she's like, I why would you ever fall for this?
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_00: This is just that's just the line from uh Pretty in Pink.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_00: This is just the line from it.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: She likes every time he names says something, it's just like another line from another like romantic movie.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: And then but then she likes she's like, Oh no, I actually like that one, uh, and end up kissing.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_00: Um because he says to her, like, oh you're right, I would end up leaving you.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_00: I'd end up leaving you for someone else, because when we get to college or whatever, and she's like, No, that's just the line from when Harry met Sally or something, just something like that.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_00: Um and then the then Ricky starts the slow clap, yeah, and then the guy gets furious who wanted to start it.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and just beats him up, and then it literally ends on that scene.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_00: So beautiful end, and then they do the um they do the nice like freeze frame of each character.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, like I always enjoy that in a movie.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: I always think it's great, like the to show where they are now kind of thing.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_00: So that's the movie.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: It's it's wild, uh, it's interesting.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_01: I that's why I wouldn't describe it as like a great movie, but it's definitely I guess it's more nostalgia for me at this point of watching it and being like that.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: I remember laughing at this.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_00: Like I remember I remember loving this movie when it came out.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: Um I also was like very into teen comedies at the time as well.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_00: So like I I'm it was like pure again, like watching this back today was like pure nostalgia, like you're saying.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: So it was very nice to watch it back.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_00: Um so like other than like do you still fight did you still find it funny when you've watched it recently?
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_01: Uh parts of it.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_01: I think that a lot of the dialogue was really funny, and I think stuff like with Chris Evans' character was very funny.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_01: Um and like like little bits, like I love the part where she's like dramatically painting, and then you pull back and it's just a stick figure, like such a clever funny bit, but I think there are a lot of issues, and I know we talked about it a lot, but uh a lot of racism, a lot of sexism, um, a lot of ableism, and I don't think that part of it holds up at all.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: It's not clever.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: A joke has to be funnier than it is offensive for it to work, and I don't think that a lot of these work if that makes sense.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: I also think that what's interesting is about about this is that the reviews, the bad reviews of this, don't point any of that out as being like the issue with it that they have with it.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: They they they mo they mainly take issue with like it not being funny.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: And I don't know I don't think you can say it's not funny.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not true.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_01: Like it's it over you know what it makes it funny is that there's two layers to it.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: You have the overarching story of parody, which works really well, and then you have a lot of throwaway jokes.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_01: So, like when you have a throwaway joke, they don't come back to it.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_01: So, like the the one that's really good is when he walks in and looks at a picture of himself, and then he moves to the next picture, and it's the picture of him looking at the picture of himself, and like yeah, it's such a quick gag, and you don't need to mention it again, or like the part where he's getting bras and underwear thrown at him, and then a jock strap comes and hits him in the face, and he's like, Thanks, man.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_00: That's back to back as well.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_00: Those are two back-to-back jokes.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_01: So like there's very funny gags throughout it.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: So I wouldn't call it I wouldn't be able to call it not funny.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_00: Like, no, I don't think I think it's still fun.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: Even now, I still think it was funny.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_00: Like, even when we're looking back at it now, just now thinking about it, it's it's still like lots of funny moments in it.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I think the stuff, like you said, I think the stuff that doesn't hold up is the stuff that that that's offensive, the stuff that's ableist and and racist and sexist.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_00: It's just like it's all those kinds of things.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_01: Because it's not making fun, again, it's like what I said before, it's not making fun of racism, it's just making fun of race.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: It's not making fun of sexism, it's making fun of gender.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: So that's exactly it.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_00: But other than that, I think it's it's a I think it's definitely one of the better spoof movies of the time.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_00: And I I kind of miss like this style.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_00: I wish they would kind of try this again, because there's so much ripe for parody at the moment that that hasn't been done in years.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_00: I don't think we had a good parody movie in a long time.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: We haven't, and I think we can we don't have to go fully into this, but I think we could attest that to the Trump era of comedy because I I know because was making this yeah, everyone is making the same joke over and over again.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_01: There was how many nighttime TV shows, not just SNL, that did spoofs of it.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_01: They had a show called My Cartoon President, like eight.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_00: It was truly one of the worst times for comedy.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: It was such a boring time.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_01: Parody also doesn't really work when you're in it.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: That's not the point of it.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_01: Like, you're you can't I don't like this is funny because we're not living in a rom com.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_01: Like we're not it's not currently happening to me.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, if it's like current events, it just doesn't work as a parody at all.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can believe it's funny, yeah.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_00: It really wasn't like those those that period of time was just so stressful for everyone.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it wasn't fun.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_00: There's nothing funny about it, and I d and to see everyone making the same jokes, trying to compete with each other to make those jokes, it's just oh I'm so darn.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: There's a great John Mullaney bit.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_01: He goes, uh, someone said to him around that time, he's like, Oh, this must be a great time for like comedy.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: You can't write this stuff, and he goes, You could write this stuff, but who would want to?
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: I that's what I think the issue is why we aren't making another movie like this, because I think that really soured parody.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: I think you're completely right there.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: I think you got it spot on with that.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so if we've um is there anything else that you want to talk about with this movie, or should we move on to the final segment if we've kind of discussed everything?
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: I I think we cover it.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: We talked about everyone, we talked about the problems.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: It's a very short movie as well.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_00: It's like it it's like an hour twenty with credits.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, very, very short movie.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think we covered everything.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, actually, one thing I do want to bring up um is the director of this.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: It's the only movie he's ever directed, and he only he directs a lot of like um like TV award shows and a lot of the um the stuff around like the parody, like the MTV movie award shows and stuff like that.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: So he does a lot of the parody stuff for that like he around that time as well, he was doing a lot of those things.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: Like you remember.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe he got the green light to do this, like while I I think that's how he got this, to be honest.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_00: Um and now he does a lot of like the the Comedy Central Roast stuff.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: That's very cool.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_00: No, it's just it's just I just found that really interesting.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's what he's only uh directed one movie and it was this.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so okay.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_00: So for the final segment then, do you have uh a reverse of this, which is a movie that is well loved and reviewed by critics and loved by people that you think is actually a bad movie?
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_01: So I I did bring it up before, that's why I was like, oh, should we talk about it later?
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: Uh definitely pretty in pink.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: I yeah, it's people always go, it's amazing, it's amazing.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_01: I just I watched the whole thing and every moment I wanted to turn it off.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_01: I just I hated it.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: And so it's just it's just a movie that you just never what so what other than like what we said already, like what what do you hate about about it most?
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: Well, besides like the characters not being great, like okay, so no, there's like there's there's a couple of things.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_01: One, um, the main female character, they like don't give her a personality at all.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_01: She just exists there as something to be one.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_01: She's just like, whatever.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like in a lot of other movies like these, the main female character has at least has some sort of a personality that you can feel close to or understand why someone's interested in them.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_01: But that was a problem.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_01: And I also thought there just wasn't a lot of plot, there wasn't anything really going on.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_01: There was no clarity of what she wanted and in herself, and she just like, I don't know.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_01: Again, it's it's that's really it, is there wasn't enough to hold on to in this movie.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: I will say, like, one thing about John Hughes, as much as he's well loved and everything, I don't think he writes female characters very well at all.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_00: Or I don't think he wrote female characters very well.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: Um they tend to lack a like you said, like, especially in this movie, they tend to they kind of they kind of lack a lot of uh purpose and like desire.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_00: Um they don't have their own personality as such, they're kind of there to like be gazed upon almost.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: Like it does it in the Breakfast Club as well, which I'd r yeah.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what's the uh you know the you know the Bechtel test?
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_01: So I it definitely it does like the opposite, it like super fails the Bechtel test.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: Like every moment there's only what one other female character really in it, the the the shop worker.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_01: And that's pretty yeah, that's what I remember, I think.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it in a long time though, but yeah, I I watched it for the first time maybe like a year or two ago, and that's I'm going based on that memory.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_01: But all she does is talk about men the entire time, and there's nothing really interesting when like you don't have a passion outside of that.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: Exactly, yeah.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like maybe it's because he's a grown man writing a teenage girl, but at the same time, at the same time, you can do better than that.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, hey, but then we could go back to that whole thing where like at the time this was what people wanted, and like people did, and yeah.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_01: Well, that's a bit like what's the movie?
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_01: Um St.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_01: Almost Fire isn't the greatest movie, but they do write women pretty well, except there's like one cra I will say there's like one crazy storyline where one of the main characters stalks the female doctor and like she she like lets him kiss him at the ends, and I'm thinking at the when I rewatched it, I was like, What?
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_01: Like that's bad, that's very bad.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's not great.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: Um it's hard for that.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the the 80s were weird time for a lot of movies.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: Again, like we had I think there's like the we there's the periods of time where we're like putting them into the putting them into these categories, but like the 80s was like super problematic, and then you got then you got the 90s the late 90s stuff with the like the teen movies there where they're like they're problematic but in a different way, and then the early 2000s the the the early to mid 2000s and then they're kind of like slowly getting better but still not there as we go along.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: I feel like Mean Girls was uh definitely like the divide of when it started to get better, yeah, because meme girls did point out all like the stereotypes in these movies and a lot of issues within these kinds of movies.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: So I think after that, I think people started to look at these this uh genre in a different light, yeah.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true, and that's like that's one that still holds up as well.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that one's you could watch all the time.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_00: I love main girls.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so this has been really fun.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: Uh thank you so much for doing this.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_00: Um how can we find you online and and what would you like to promote?
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: Uh so you can find my work on Instagram, uh Ellenliebenthal.art.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_01: And I also sell my book and my products on my website, ellenliebenthal.com.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: Um that's it.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: And you don't want to promote your your like Twitter or your no my Twitter is just stupid dots.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: Like there's nothing the main stuff I work on is like on Instagram and my website.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_00: But we are in competition.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, we're almost there.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_01: I'm hey, I'm almost about 100 to 2k.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_01: I'm coming for you.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're you're gonna beat me then.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_01: We never know.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: We never know.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_00: I'm like one 150, 160 away.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: I believe in you.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're in a dumb competition to get to 2k first, and Ellen start Ellen started off ahead.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_01: To be honest, we're all we're all losers here at this point.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: I think we're trying to get Twitter followers.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_00: So if you're listening, follow us both.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, please, please.
