- 0:00Can a soul or the essence of an entity become trapped inside of
- 0:05an object? Could one, channeling enough
- 0:08energy, dedication, and care into something allow
- 0:12anotherworldly presence to possess?
- 0:15It attracting spirits like moths to a flame.
- 0:21We have covered. Haunted objects here before,
- 0:23such as a Kiku the doll, among others.
- 0:27But this story is too infamous to not be given the time of day,
- 0:31and although it has been told many times, perhaps you will
- 0:35learn a detail or two that you've never heard before.
- 0:38This is the untold story of Robert the Doll and the
- 0:42malevolent monstrosity that stares at the world from behind
- 0:47its beady little eyes. At first glance, most people
- 0:59tend to agree that although dolls of all sorts can be creepy
- 1:02to say the least, there's something particularly unnerving
- 1:06about the doll has become known to the world as Robert.
- 1:10But behind the initial feelings of unease at first glance lies
- 1:14many tales of accidents, tragedy and misfortune, all supposedly
- 1:20at Robert's hands. Far too many within his presence
- 1:24to just be a string of awful coincidences.
- 1:27But if an evil force supposedly lives within the confines of
- 1:31this century old child's toy, to come to recognize and understand
- 1:35just what it could be, we must first tell its story, and to
- 1:39tell. Robert's story properly we must
- 1:42first start at the very. Beginning as with many legends.
- 1:46There are multiple versions of the origin story and how Robert
- 1:49the Doll came to be. Having read through most if not
- 1:53all of them, I'll be sharing with you the most agreed upon
- 1:56origin for accuracy's sake in the beginning, and we will
- 2:00explore other theories and origin stories later in this
- 2:04video. The years 1904 and a man named
- 2:08Thomas Otto is on a trip in Germany.
- 2:11Whether it was for business or leisure, we can't say.
- 2:15But during his trip, he decided to pick up a gift for his young
- 2:18grandson's birthday to take back home with him to the States.
- 2:23As he perused various shops throughout his time there, he
- 2:27stumbled across a toy that he believed would be the perfect
- 2:30fit for the young boy. Perched on display behind a pale
- 2:34glass window sat a doll. The doll was about the size of a
- 2:38young child and was accompanied by a small dog doll as well.
- 2:43Knowing that his grandson was lonely on the large family
- 2:46estate and was very fond of dogs as well, Thomas believed he had
- 2:50found what he had been searching for and quickly purchased the
- 2:54toy. In due time, he would find his
- 2:56way back to the United States once his trip was over, bringing
- 3:00his precious cargo with him. Making his way back to the
- 3:04family estate located in Key West, FL to greet his family
- 3:09after months abroad. Thomas.
- 3:11And an act of innocence and excitement gifted the toy to his
- 3:15grandson Eugene for his 8th birthday.
- 3:18As soon as Eugene laid eyes on the gift he had received, he
- 3:22became ecstatic. With no other children his own
- 3:25age in the home or nearby, he now for once had his very own
- 3:29friend, his own best friend, and one that could accompany him
- 3:33wherever he went. Sitting at around 3 feet tall
- 3:37with his little dog, Eugene named his new friend.
- 3:41Robert But Robert, of course, needed close to fit for years of
- 3:45adventures to come. So Eugene's mother, Maria,
- 3:49quickly found just what he was missing, a small sailors outfit
- 3:53that had once belonged to her son but had long since been
- 3:56outgrown. After placing Robert and his new
- 3:59clothes, the two were off to play and soon became
- 4:03inseparable. Wherever Eugene Win, Robert
- 4:07accompanied him. From hours of play inside and
- 4:10outside of the house to the dinner table in bedtime, his new
- 4:15best friend was everything the young man wanted, and much more
- 4:20besides constant companionship. Eugene began to confide in the
- 4:24doll, often speaking to him as if he was a person and his own
- 4:28right. His parents, who were first just
- 4:31as elated as their young son, was at his excitement over his
- 4:35new toy. Began to grow.
- 4:37Concerned over how close their son was to the doll, but they
- 4:41would initially write off the behavior as most would, since
- 4:45lonely children, with their imagination still very much
- 4:48active, will typically invent imaginary friends or adventurous
- 4:53stories to fill the void or lack of friends and real adventures
- 4:59within their daily lives. But over the months since Robert
- 5:02had arrived. They noticed a bizarre shift in
- 5:06Eugene's personality. He began to grow extremely
- 5:09possessive and obsessive over Robert and would lash out at his
- 5:13parents, sometimes violently. If the doll was not in his sight
- 5:18at all times, it would. Soon appear that.
- 5:21Eugene's obsession with his cloth companion and shift in
- 5:25behavior wasn't the only strange activity that was taking place
- 5:30one night as she tucked her son into bed.
- 5:33Maria overheard Eugene whispering to Robert, something
- 5:37that at this point had become a daily occurrence, but as she
- 5:40closed the door to his room and began to walk away, she heard a
- 5:45deep, guttural voice respond to her son.
- 5:50Shocked and terrified, she rushed back into her son's room
- 5:54only to find him laying with the doll as per usual.
- 5:58When she asked him just who was speaking, he simply answered.
- 6:03Robert This scary happening wouldn't be the last.
- 6:08About a year into Robert the Doll and Happening, their Key
- 6:11West estate, the autos noticed yet another shift and their
- 6:16son's behavior. But this time it was almost the
- 6:19exact opposite of what the initial shift had been.
- 6:23Eugene had gone from a quiet and shy but charming young man to a
- 6:28belligerent, angry and possessive boy.
- 6:32But now he had become one that was meek, full of anxiety, and
- 6:37constantly seemed like he was walking on egg shells.
- 6:41He had now also taken to violent fits on occasion, as if
- 6:45something was trying to overtake his body and soul.
- 6:50The guttural voice that Maria had heard a year ago could be
- 6:54heard much more frequently now, and just as frequently almost
- 6:59nightly. It became commonplace to hear
- 7:02what sounded like glass breaking and constant commotion coming
- 7:06from Eugene's room. Upon hearing the turmoil, his
- 7:10parents would rush to discover the source.
- 7:13Upon opening their son's door, they would find his furniture
- 7:17dumped upside down. Other toys of his would be
- 7:21smashed or in pieces, and Eugene would almost always be in the
- 7:26corner of the room in his bed. Petrified while Robert the doll
- 7:32would be in his usual space nearby.
- 7:36Upon asking just what had happened, they would be met with
- 7:40an all too familiar answer. At this point they would ask
- 7:44just who did this Eugene and his answer would always be Robert
- 7:51noticing the activity becoming more and more intense and being
- 7:55a God fearing woman herself. Maria was deeply disturbed by
- 7:59what was taking place in her home and what was taking place
- 8:02to her family, particularly her son.
- 8:07Besides the nightly terror that now plagued them, she was very
- 8:10much disturbed by this guttural voice that she kept hearing,
- 8:14Knowing that her son had not yet matured, she knew that there was
- 8:18no way his voice could reach that deep level of tonality and
- 8:22malice that she often heard. At times the Voice would even
- 8:27shout and speak over Eugene, and unless he was exceptionally good
- 8:32of ventriloquism, something was horrifically wrong.
- 8:35It was if the devil himself now occupied the walls of their
- 8:39home. Like a stain or liquid, the
- 8:43presence had slowly seeped in and permeated throughout their
- 8:48lives. One night, as per usual, the
- 8:53family settles down to sleep. As the clouds spiral and the
- 8:57moon now haunts the sky above them gleaming down overhead, the
- 9:02family's peace is shattered by the horrific screams of their
- 9:06son and the echoes of the sounds of things being broken.
- 9:13Wideeyed and terrified, Eugene's parents rushed to their son's
- 9:17aid, Lantern in hand. The closer they get to his room,
- 9:21the louder the low and horrible voice becomes.
- 9:26And the louder the screams of Eugene become as well.
- 9:30The deep voice that have been growing louder suddenly was
- 9:34silent like the winter snow as hands touched the doorknob.
- 9:39Quickly overcoming their fear for the sake of their boy, the
- 9:43couple throw the door open to find their son huddled
- 9:46underneath his sheets. His room was almost completely
- 9:50destroyed. Most of his belongings were in
- 9:53pieces. Her tatters from what was left
- 9:57of his toys, to his furniture, to even his clothes.
- 10:02Poor Eugene was shaking in the corner of his room opposite his
- 10:06bed, and Robert, along with his beady eyed companion were in his
- 10:11bed staring at them all silently.
- 10:15By this point Maria knew that whatever Robert was or whatever
- 10:20inhabited him was truly evil. But unsure of how to handle the
- 10:24situation or what exactly they were dealing with and a fit of
- 10:29rage, she grabbed the doll and rushed to the attic, casting
- 10:34Robert and his canine companion into the darkness above.
- 10:38This would remain his home until a better idea presented itself
- 10:43as to what to do with him. The low groans and screams and
- 10:48breaking ceased in Eugene's room, but would frequently be
- 10:52heard. In the attic, with having such a
- 10:55large estate to care for, the family did have a team of
- 10:59servants to care for the property.
- 11:02But their loyal crew, having experienced the strangeness
- 11:05themselves up and quit the servants, soon became a
- 11:10revolving door with new faces almost always coming and going
- 11:15just as quickly as they started, despite his banishment to the
- 11:19attic. Alongside the occasional
- 11:21crashing sounds and yelling, the family said that they would also
- 11:26hear Robert walking around the pitter patter of his small feet
- 11:30often being. Heard.
- 11:32Echoing all throughout the house, especially at night when
- 11:37he seemed to truly come alive, so to speak, as the years
- 11:42passed, and despite all of the childhood trauma and fear
- 11:45inflicted on him by the demonic doll.
- 11:48Unbenounced to any rational mind after his parents passing,
- 11:53Eugene would choose to take Robert back into his possession
- 11:57as an adult. Perhaps he did this to ensure
- 12:00that Robert wouldn't inflict terror upon anyone else.
- 12:04Maybe he felt like he had the most experience dealing with him
- 12:08and therefore he was the most equipped to handle anything that
- 12:11could possibly. Happen as a result of his
- 12:13presence, Eugene and his adult years became an artist.
- 12:18And would later marry and have a family of his own.
- 12:21He kept Robert propped up in the window of his art studio, known
- 12:25as the Turret Room, which overlooked his front yard.
- 12:29Annette Eugene's wife was said to disapprove of Robert's
- 12:33presence in the house and demanded that he be gotten rid
- 12:37of or banished into the attic or basement.
- 12:40For a short time this took place, but naturally Robert
- 12:45didn't take kindly to this. And apparently began to make
- 12:48threats towards her by visiting her and her dreams and verbally
- 12:53telling Eugene that if he was not moved back, horrible things
- 12:58would happen to his family. So eventually Robert was placed
- 13:02back in the tour room. Aside from this, I couldn't find
- 13:06any additional information on the happenings that took place
- 13:10during those years inside the home.
- 13:12I would hope and imagine that perhaps Robert had gone dormant
- 13:15during this time. Especially since Eugene did
- 13:18eventually have children of his own and hopefully didn't allow
- 13:22them to be compromised by having such a thing in the house.
- 13:26There were, however, reports of passerbys, school children and
- 13:30neighbors feeling a strange presence when passing by the
- 13:34house on a daily basis. Others would say that they could
- 13:37see Robert. Move, but in the blink of an eye
- 13:41he'd be back to where he was sitting.
- 13:43Eugene Otto will continue to spend the rest of his life
- 13:46painting in the turret room with Robert the doll until his death
- 13:50in 1974. However, this bizarre legend
- 13:54does not stop with his death. Upon Eugene's passing, his
- 13:59family sold the house to a woman named Myrtle Reuter.
- 14:03Upon moving into the home, she noticed sitting in the window of
- 14:07the turret room was a small doll with a sailor's uniform.
- 14:13She thought this to be strange, since the auto family had not
- 14:16left any other belongings behind when they'd moved, but
- 14:20regardless, she decided to keep it.
- 14:24Myrtle soon began to realize that there was something
- 14:26different about this doll. Upon house cleaning, she would
- 14:30typically notice that he moved around the room, seemingly by
- 14:34himself. At night, she would hear what
- 14:38she described as small footsteps.
- 14:42All throughout the house, guess who would visit her claim to
- 14:46that Robert would move of his own volition and that his blank
- 14:50expression would change to one of rage if anyone discussed him
- 14:55in a negative way. Myrtle would eventually reach
- 14:58out and speak with the widowed Annette Otto, who would confirm
- 15:02her worst fears that something otherworldly inhabited Robert
- 15:06the Doll after dealing with his antics for years.
- 15:11She finally decided to reach out to a local museum and would
- 15:14donate Robert in 1994 to the Fort E Martello Museum in Key
- 15:20West, FL, where he remains today.
- 15:23But as with each previous relocation, his story does not
- 15:28end here either. Placed inside his own glass
- 15:31display for the public to see him each and every day, one
- 15:35would think that perhaps Robert's antics would cease.
- 15:38He was, of course a natural source of curiosity and would be
- 15:42seen and admired by many people daily, but you would be very
- 15:46wrong. Staff at the.
- 15:48Museum have claimed to find Robert in various positions
- 15:52within his case, as if he was attempting to break out of it or
- 15:56had been out of it prior and had just reentered it.
- 16:00The Phantom footsteps as previously claimed by all three
- 16:03families, has also been reported.
- 16:06As well as the dolls expression changing from neutral to nasty
- 16:11and an instant, the afflictions first started with the staff
- 16:16themselves. From horrible bouts of rare
- 16:19diseases to relationship breakdowns and marriage
- 16:24failures, as well as unique instances of psychosis over the
- 16:29years the curse of Robert the doll began to take shape and
- 16:34become a well known phenomena. But it would soon spread to many
- 16:38others besides the staff themselves.
- 16:41Many people, upon visiting Robert's exhibit, finding him
- 16:46strange to say the least, but often mock him, berate him, or
- 16:51just laugh at his appearance. Little did they know that they
- 16:55would be inviting the wrath of something otherworldly.
- 16:59Shortly after their visit, droves of people began to
- 17:03experience shockingly similar happenings.
- 17:06To that of the staff, varying in intensity, almost as if their
- 17:10punishment was being tapered to fit their crimes.
- 17:15From less serious experiences like paranormal activity
- 17:19beginning in their home, horrible luck and job loss, to
- 17:23name a few. To much more serious experiences
- 17:28like exotic disease diagnosis, rare cancers, relationship
- 17:33disintegration. And others, Car accidents,
- 17:38falls, and even untimely death. Eventually, a warning would be
- 17:44added to Robert's exhibit explaining the alleged curse and
- 17:48the proper etiquette to approach him with.
- 17:51Whether that's to observe or take a photo, is to not offend
- 17:56whoever or whatever inhabits the doll itself.
- 18:00Over the decades, an entire wall has been dedicated.
- 18:04To the letters, people have dropped off or sent the museum
- 18:08if they weren't able to come in person begging for Robert's
- 18:11forgiveness, hoping to end whatever horrible situation they
- 18:16found themselves in after their visit.
- 18:19To this day there are over 1000 letters, with more continuing to
- 18:23be added each and every year. But could there be more to this
- 18:27legend, as I mentioned in the beginning of the video?
- 18:31There is another origin story that could explain just what
- 18:35inhabits the doll and how it got there.
- 18:38I will also add several elements that I found interesting
- 18:41relating to the case itself. The alternative origin story
- 18:46says that a young woman of Bahamian descent gave Thomas
- 18:50Otter the doll as a retaliation for a misdeed.
- 18:54As to why this would have taken place is not known, but
- 18:58speculation has led many to believe.
- 19:01That the girl, or perhaps a relative, had been a member of
- 19:04staff at some point or another at the family's Key West estate.
- 19:09The retaliation was that the doll had been imbued with a
- 19:12spirit that had been conjured using voodoo and by trapping the
- 19:16entity within the doll, making it it's vessel, it became aware
- 19:21of its surroundings and knew what it was sent there to do,
- 19:26although with many details in this case.
- 19:29Lots of details can't be corroborated due to the age of
- 19:32the story itself, but there are a few details that I managed to
- 19:35dig up that are interesting. The doll itself appears to have
- 19:39been manufactured by the Stife Company, a German family company
- 19:43that was headed by German designer Richard Stife, the
- 19:47original designer of the beloved teddy bear, and the original
- 19:51design of the doll in particular, and others that were
- 19:54similar to it, were not designed as toys.
- 19:57To rather stage props for the time, so it's hard to say if
- 20:01Robert was ever intended as a toy in the 1st place.
- 20:05The family tree of the autos also has conflicting information
- 20:09in regards to birth and death dates as well as names, but I
- 20:13did my best to corroborate this information and I'll be linking
- 20:17the info of the description below Today.
- 20:20Robert continues to be on display and his antics continue
- 20:24to persist. He seems to be just as powerful
- 20:28as he was all those years ago. The museum keeps a catalog
- 20:32record of all ailments that have been reported as a result of
- 20:36offending him for future reference.
- 20:39His reach also continues to expand as his legend grows and
- 20:43becomes more and more well known across the world.
- 20:47Robert the Doll has been the inspiration behind many books,
- 20:51movies and podcasts, as well as a local legend in Florida.
- 20:56And this lesson truly applies to anyone and everyone.
- 21:01Have respect when you meet someone because you never truly
- 21:05know who or what you could be dealing with.
- 21:09And please, if you find yourself at the East Martello Museum in
- 21:14Key West, FL, and you happen to come into contact with the
- 21:18entity known as Robert the Doll, be respectful.
- 21:23Because if you're not. He may just pay the ultimate
- 21:26price. They say that one man's trash is
- 21:31another man's treasure, while many people accidentally
- 21:35purchase a haunted home without knowing it was haunted.
- 21:39This story partially is about a man who did the opposite.
- 21:43But the home in which he purchased was way more than he
- 21:46bargained for. Not for him, but for a family
- 21:50whose experiences made it infamous.
- 21:53With a one-of-a-kind strange past and a present day nasty and
- 21:58demonic reputation known as Pennsylvania's Amityville.
- 22:02Horror. This is the untold story of the
- 22:05Wells House and why it's considered one of the most
- 22:08haunted places in the state, let alone the country.
- 22:20To properly tell this story, we must first start at the
- 22:23beginning. The notorious home on Wells St.
- 22:27was built by industrialist Augustus C Laning, but despite
- 22:32his future success, Laning had not led such an easy life.
- 22:36After arriving in the Wilkes Barre area to work for his
- 22:40grandfather at age 14, he would soon experience tragedy.
- 22:45His younger nephew, shortly after his arrival, would pass
- 22:49away when the barn he was playing in was struck by
- 22:52lightning and caught fire. Trapping him inside.
- 22:56Shortly after this happening, one of his grandfather's
- 22:59factories would also mysteriously catch fire and burn
- 23:03to the ground as well. Despite a series of unfortunate
- 23:07events, the Lanings Enterprises would eventually thrive,
- 23:11allowing Augustus to inherit land from his mother on what is
- 23:15today Wells St. Eventually, he would build a
- 23:19home at 46 S Wells St. and 1861. And lived there until 1865, when
- 23:27he eventually sold his home and business.
- 23:31He would take his last breath in 1875.
- 23:36The land in which Laning built the home on, as many locals
- 23:39would say, was soaked in turmoil and blood, having been the site
- 23:45of numerous wars and conflicts between Native American tribes
- 23:50as well as European settlers and native tribes.
- 23:54From the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, the house
- 23:58went through a series of sheriff sales, which were a type of
- 24:02public auction and would eventually sell for just $1.00
- 24:06at auction in May of 1939, a little over $20 and today's
- 24:12money. Although tragedy befell the
- 24:14laning family, especially early on in Augustus's life, any
- 24:19happenings within the home weren't documented if they did
- 24:22occur. As far as we know, no death had
- 24:26taken place up until this time, but it certainly starts to
- 24:30snowball as the years progress. In 1940, the person who had
- 24:36purchased the home so cheaply at auction would breathe their last
- 24:40breath by their own hand, as would the next person who
- 24:43purchased the home via auction in 1950, almost exactly 10 years
- 24:49apart to the day after these mysterious deaths.
- 24:54There would be four more that would take place on the
- 24:56premises. The other three I was unable to
- 24:59dig up additional details on. However, the most notable was
- 25:03the 4th. A priest who was 54 years old
- 25:07and in relatively good health, have been walking past the home
- 25:11and passing when he glanced at the home.
- 25:14We don't know exactly what he saw or experienced.
- 25:18But he fell to the ground and died almost instantly.
- 25:22From a heart attack right in the front yard, the home would be a
- 25:26revolving door for quite some time, sometimes vacant,
- 25:31sometimes with occupants, but only.
- 25:33For a short. Time In March of 1975, a 27 year
- 25:38old radio DJ by the name of Walker Bennett and his wife Mary
- 25:43Ann purchased the home and then moved into the house from New
- 25:47Haven with their two daughters. Almost as soon as they moved
- 25:51into the house, bizarre activity began to manifest.
- 25:57The family began to hear banging and scratching sounds coming
- 26:00from inside the walls. Thinking at first they had some
- 26:04kind of a rodent problem, Walker followed the noise and traced it
- 26:08back to a particular bedroom wall.
- 26:11He then knocked the wall. Down but instead of being.
- 26:14Greeted by this supposed rodent problem, he instead saw a small.
- 26:20Glimmering 10 box instead. After removing the box, he felt
- 26:24a strange presence upon opening it.
- 26:28Its contents were very weird to say the least.
- 26:32It contained a red ribbon, a cross made of tied together
- 26:36chicken bones and a human molar. The first thing that struck him
- 26:41was that this looked like some kind of a hex or curse, but not
- 26:45wanting to alarm his family. He would dispose of the items.
- 26:50But the activity nonetheless would continue to persist.
- 26:55By 1976, the scratching and knocking had continued, but soon
- 27:01the family began to see otherworldly beings as well.
- 27:05On one particularly cold February morning, Bennett would
- 27:09hear a series of bangs and scratches on his front door.
- 27:14Upon slowly opening it to see just who was there, he would be
- 27:18shocked. Standing at the front door was
- 27:22the translucent figure of a man with a cane.
- 27:26With a vicious and crooked smile freaked out With his heart
- 27:31racing, he quickly slammed the door and tried to make sense of
- 27:35the interaction. Within seconds, he reopened the
- 27:38door, only to find that there was nothing there.
- 27:42As the days ticked by, the activity intensified.
- 27:47The scratches and banging noises now seem to be originating from
- 27:51the attic. They now were also joined by
- 27:55disembodied screams, some seeming to be male, others
- 28:00female, and some were a mix of both.
- 28:04In the months to come, the activity would be coupled with
- 28:07moaning and groaning sounds, whispering voices and the sounds
- 28:12of weeping coming from. Inside the walls.
- 28:16All still tracing back to the attic couple with these new
- 28:19developments were the sounds of heavy footsteps on the wooden
- 28:23floors. The entire family would also see
- 28:26several apparitions. Notably, they would experience
- 28:30the ghostly figure of a young woman in a night dress drifting
- 28:35throughout the house. Her dress seemed to be old, like
- 28:39those of the Victorian era, whenever she was seen following
- 28:44her. Would be drips or spots of blood
- 28:48either on the floor or on the walls.
- 28:52Once she began to be seen, there was a putrid, rotting type of
- 28:56stench that became present in the house, traveling from room
- 29:00to room. It was, however, usually the
- 29:03worst in the kitchen and living room.
- 29:07Not wanting to. Further frighten the girls, The
- 29:10Bennetts met with each other to discuss all of the bizarre
- 29:13happenings. And they finally had to admit
- 29:15that they had purchased a haunted house.
- 29:18Haunted by what, exactly? They couldn't be sure.
- 29:23Shortly after this revelation, the family began to suffer from
- 29:27an unexplainable physical illness, one that left them
- 29:31drained at all times, exhausted and aching.
- 29:36The doctors couldn't diagnose it, leaving the family only to
- 29:40continue to suffer with the symptoms.
- 29:43Alongside this, whether it was a result of the illness on an
- 29:47individual basis or the haunting itself, the whole family seemed
- 29:52to be thrown into a deep, dark well of depression submerged in
- 29:57its black waters, leaving them feeling hopeless.
- 30:02Things would begin to escalate further when, in January of
- 30:051977, Walker and his wife would witness one of their daughters
- 30:10be pushed down the stairs. But to their amazement, she
- 30:15didn't fall and crumple on the various steps.
- 30:18Instead, she floated, almost in slow motion, until she landed on
- 30:23her. Feet.
- 30:24At the bottom of them, unharmed, not knowing what to make of
- 30:29this, The adults in the house weren't getting much sleep, and
- 30:33their condition continued to get worse.
- 30:36They would soon reach out to the church for help and guidance.
- 30:40Soon a Catholic priest would come out and bless the home,
- 30:44trying to quell whatever supernatural forces that were
- 30:47wreaking havoc upon the Bennetts, but these efforts were
- 30:51to no avail. If anything, after he left, the
- 30:56activity seemed to get worse. Ultimately, in March of 1978,
- 31:03the family who had been sound asleep in the night, was woken
- 31:06up by the sound of Thunder crashing.
- 31:09Except. There wasn't a storm outside.
- 31:13What followed this massive sound was a deluge of paranormal
- 31:17manifestations. Footsteps were pounding across
- 31:21the floor and in the attic. Above them, the attic door was
- 31:25being pounded on from the other side.
- 31:29Their dishes in their kitchen were being removed from their
- 31:32cabinets as they opened and slammed by themselves and thrown
- 31:37onto the floor. Shattering them.
- 31:41Amongst the chaos was the scratching and banging on the
- 31:44front door. Couple with the sounds of a
- 31:47child weeping coming from inside of the walls, following them as
- 31:54they ran throughout the house. After enduring almost three
- 31:58years inside the home, the Bennetts finally fled this
- 32:01night. Leaving with just the clothes on
- 32:04their backs, they left all of their belongings behind.
- 32:09After the family found temporary arrangements, they immediately
- 32:13tried to sell the home as it was, but had no luck finding a
- 32:17buyer. After several months, Walker
- 32:21Bennett reached out to a local newspaper and hopes of sharing
- 32:25the family story anonymously to find help or a buyer to get them
- 32:30out of this haunted hell in the interview under the pseudonym of
- 32:34Bucky Johnson. He claimed that he was now
- 32:37$40,000 in debt as a result of the family fleeing and being
- 32:42unable to live in the house and then being unable to sell the
- 32:46house, and that he had developed a drinking problem and now chain
- 32:51smoked as a result of the trauma and stress that he had endured.
- 32:56He also stated that he and the rest of the family were on
- 32:59therapy in hopes of eventually putting the past behind them.
- 33:03Several neighbors near the home were also interviewed, with some
- 33:07saying that they had never seen or heard anything and others
- 33:11saying that they always had an odd feeling whenever passing by
- 33:14the house. The article was then published
- 33:18on Halloween of 1979. Perfect timing for a local and
- 33:23terrifying story. No doubt.
- 33:25Following the initial publicity, word eventually made its way to
- 33:29Ed and Lorraine Warren. Famed paranormal investigators
- 33:33and demonologists who had just covered another haunting known
- 33:37as The Amityville Horror just three years before.
- 33:41The couple made a visit to the Well Street house in March of
- 33:451980. But by this time, the bank had
- 33:48repossessed the home from the Bennetts due to their inability
- 33:51to make further mortgage payments on the home, so the
- 33:55Warrens were unable to enter the house due to it being entirely.
- 33:59Locked up for this reason. Lorraine, however, would say
- 34:02that she sensed a terrible despair emanating from the
- 34:05house, and that the effect it must have had on those who lived
- 34:09there must have been very negative.
- 34:13Several years later, the house would be purchased by a woman
- 34:16named Katherine Watkins from the bank for $20,000.
- 34:20In August of 1982, her purchase subsequentially prompted another
- 34:26newspaper article to be written. When asked, she told reporters
- 34:30that she was unafraid of the rumors surrounding the house and
- 34:34didn't fear any ghosts that could be there.
- 34:38She moved in with her two children shortly after her
- 34:40purchase and whether it was sheer determination, stubborn
- 34:45nature or something else, she lived in the house for the next
- 34:4930 years until her death on October 26th of 2012.
- 34:56Although shortly after moving in and over the decades to come,
- 35:00she and her family also experienced unexplained
- 35:03phenomena such as objects moving by themselves, their beds
- 35:08shaking, lights and appliances turning on and off by themselves
- 35:13and seeing those ghosts that Catherine insisted she wasn't
- 35:16afraid of, such as the woman and what looked like Victorian style
- 35:21clothing. Her daughter would inherit the
- 35:24home after Catherine's passing. And would place the home up for
- 35:28sale, where it was then purchased by a ghost hunter by
- 35:31the name of Tim Woods in December of 2013.
- 35:36Rather than repair, sell, or live in the property he had just
- 35:40purchased, Woods only wanted to investigate the paranormal
- 35:43activity that was taking place there with his team of fellow
- 35:47investigators, they would record hours of content in the home.
- 35:52And capture what they believed to be numerous supernatural
- 35:55manifestations. People who have joined him in
- 35:59the investigations have been known to have scratches manifest
- 36:03on their skin and have their clothing tugged on by unseen
- 36:07hands. Tim would later state that the
- 36:11Wells house is one of the scariest haunted locations that
- 36:14he had ever investigated due to the numerous ghost sightings
- 36:19that were caught on tape. And demonic attacks that
- 36:22occurred while he was there, he said.
- 36:25It is our conclusion, based upon our documented research, that
- 36:29the house is haunted by a demonic presence that cannot be
- 36:33removed, nor is it safe for anyone to live in.
- 36:38The strangeness of the house on Wells St. doesn't end here.
- 36:43In the early hours of Wednesday, July 25th of 2018, police were
- 36:49called to the home. To catch an intruder, Someone
- 36:52was outside of the house trying to get in when authorities
- 36:56arrived. They apprehended a man in his
- 36:5930s was caught in the act of prying the wooden boards off the
- 37:03back door of the property. He had a 24 inch sword tied to
- 37:07his back, had brass knuckles and a pocket knife in his pockets,
- 37:13and was carrying a Bible. The man seemed out of it to say
- 37:17the least. But claimed that he was trying
- 37:20to hunt for ghosts upon going through his rub sack.
- 37:24Police also found a loaded shotgun with 10 shells alongside
- 37:28of it. He would be arrested and charged
- 37:31with numerous offenses as a result of the episode, although
- 37:36we don't know who, it seems that the home was sold in 2020 to new
- 37:40owners and at half the price that Woods have paid.
- 37:43For it. There also doesn't appear to be
- 37:46any sort of a mention of it being haunted.
- 37:49It's listing reads like this, a home full of historical
- 37:53intrigue. With some TLC you can bring new
- 37:57life to this four bedroom beauty.
- 37:59As soon as you step over the threshold, you'll realize there
- 38:03is truly something out of this world with this home and it's
- 38:07craftsmanship. A very fitting spin if you ask
- 38:10me. I hope the new occupants are
- 38:13living peacefully, although given the home's infamous story
- 38:17and past seems highly unlikely. But the listing was right about
- 38:22one thing though. The home certainly has lots of
- 38:25historical intrigue and you can bring new life into this four
- 38:31bedroom beauty because as soon as you step over the threshold,
- 38:36you'll realize there's truly something out of this world with
- 38:39this home. Or should we say, in this home
- 38:43that's been watching and waiting for some new life to engorge
- 38:49itself? On.
- 38:52Could an item, if given enough energy, devotion and focus,
- 38:57begin to take on a life of its own?
- 39:00Could it begin to exhibit human like characteristics as if it
- 39:04has been imbued with or contains some kind of soul or entity
- 39:09inside of it? This act of magic has been
- 39:11practiced by multiple religions and cults throughout the ages.
- 39:16This is just one very strange example that it could indeed be
- 39:20possible after a gracious gift was placed into the arms of a
- 39:25little. Girl.
- 39:26Tragedy would strike and what follows would continue to haunt
- 39:30the family, the citizens of the village and would soon cross far
- 39:35beyond the barriers of land and sea.
- 39:38This is the untold story of a Kiku, the haunted Japanese doll
- 39:44and the bizarre paranormal force that possessed it.
- 39:56Japan is a very mystical and spiritual place, a place where
- 40:01the souls of the past seem to interact with the living.
- 40:06Such places where this spiritual energy seems to be most visible
- 40:11is throughout many of Japan's spiritual temples, home to many
- 40:15religions, the two main ones being Buddhism and Shintoism.
- 40:20Thousands of temples exist all over the country, but one in
- 40:25particular houses a spiritual artifact that has a tragic back
- 40:29story and an even more terrifying story that continues.
- 40:33To be written to this day. Located in Hokkaido, Japan at
- 40:38the Meninge Buddhist Temple is a doll with a bizarre and tragic
- 40:44back story. Indeed.
- 40:46Although there are several origin stories of how the doll
- 40:49came to be and how the temple became its final living space so
- 40:53to speak, all of them have most of the main details in common.
- 40:58Therefore, I'll be telling the most agreed upon origin story to
- 41:03try and be as true to the legend.
- 41:05As I can the year is 1918 in Hokkaido, Japan and a 17 year
- 41:11old boy by the name of Ikiki Suzuki is in search of a gift
- 41:17for his little sister's birthday.
- 41:19As he pursues the different vendors and small shops,
- 41:23something soon catches his attention and one of the store
- 41:27windows he spots a small childlike doll wearing a
- 41:32traditional Japanese kimono. Knowing that he had finally
- 41:35found something his sister will love, Akiki quickly purchases
- 41:40the doll and makes his way back home through the countryside.
- 41:45As the family celebrates their little girl's birthday, Okiku is
- 41:49presented with the doll, and almost immediately, as soon as
- 41:53her eyes meet hers, she falls in love with it.
- 41:57The two from this point become inseparable wherever Okiku is.
- 42:03Her doll is right by her side. She Combs her hair, bathes her,
- 42:08dresses her and treats her as if she was her little sister.
- 42:13That you even share meals and sleep side by side.
- 42:17The joy that the doll brought a kiku must have filled Akiki's
- 42:21heart with such happiness. But soon that happiness would
- 42:25change to tragedy 1 hot day as the little girl played outside
- 42:31with her doll. She was bitten by a mosquito.
- 42:34This benign insect by it, would soon manifest itself into a
- 42:38horrible case of malaria. Although the family did
- 42:42everything they could possibly do, Okiku would pass away scared
- 42:48and gasping for air as she clutched her special doll all
- 42:52the way until the moment she took her last breath,
- 42:56Devastated. The Suzuki's plan to have their
- 42:58little girl buried with the doll since she loved it so much, but
- 43:03unfortunately, due to either governmental or religious
- 43:06oversight at the time, this wasn't an option.
- 43:10Instead, after they had laid Akiku to rest, the doll would be
- 43:14placed on a small family shrine located within the living
- 43:18quarters of their home as a tribute of sorts.
- 43:21To their late daughter and their love for her.
- 43:24But shortly after the doll was placed on the shrine, very
- 43:28strange things began to happen. The Kiki, upon walking past the
- 43:33shrine one day, noticed that the doll's hair seemed significantly
- 43:37longer than what it had been when it was placed there.
- 43:41The hair, which was originally shoulders length on the doll
- 43:43itself and black, was now overgrown, with differing shades
- 43:49of brown hair also coming through and splitting at the
- 43:52ends. Finding this bizarre to say the
- 43:55least, he brought the discovery to his parents attention and
- 43:59unsure of what else to do, they trimmed the doll's hair as the
- 44:04days came and when the family began to have distressing dreams
- 44:08at night of their departed Okkiku.
- 44:10Sometimes she would be scared and alone in the darkness,
- 44:14calling out to them, only being recognized by her voice.
- 44:19Other times she would blame them for what happened.
- 44:22To her. Each member of the family, at
- 44:24differing times, had these dreams, and they would soon lead
- 44:28all of them to believe that Akiku's soul wasn't peacefully
- 44:32resting. These disturbing dreams soon
- 44:35became all the stranger when the doll, which they began to refer
- 44:39to as Akiku and their daughter's honor, would appear by their
- 44:44bedsides following these nightmares.
- 44:48One such incident involved the father of the family waking up
- 44:52in a cold sweat only to be met face to face with a blank and
- 44:58lifeless stare of the doll, unsure of what was taking place,
- 45:03the Suzuki's turn to their faith.
- 45:06After contacting a local Buddhist priest and having a
- 45:09cleansing ritual be performed on their home and the doll, the
- 45:14activity seemed to grow and become stronger.
- 45:18Accompanying their ever frequent nightmares and random movements
- 45:22of the doll, the chilling events grew into full blown spiritual
- 45:26manifestations. During their waking life.
- 45:29They soon began to hear banging noises all throughout the house
- 45:34and the whispers of a little girl.
- 45:37Strange disembodied voices varying from high pitched like
- 45:41those of a child to the low groans of something
- 45:45unexplainable. Began to be heard, their lights
- 45:49began to flicker on and off, and the paranormal activity seemed
- 45:53to happen more frequently as the calendar ticked closer to the
- 45:58birth and death dates of Akiku. These strange and terrifying
- 46:04happenings would continue over the course of the next 20 years,
- 46:08with multiple religious priests and shamans being contacted and
- 46:13all coming to the same conclusion.
- 46:15That after the cleansings failed time and time again, that the
- 46:19restless spirit of a Kiku now inhabited the doll she once
- 46:23loved so much. Finally needing a major change
- 46:28and unable to deal with the ever intensifying spiritual presence
- 46:32that seemed to haunt their home, the Suzuki's relocated to a
- 46:36different district. Believing the doll to be the
- 46:39source of their various ailments and emotional torture that they
- 46:43had endured over the last two decades, they had no desire to
- 46:47take it with them. The family had reached the
- 46:50conclusion that if their daughter's soul wasn't at peace,
- 46:53what could perhaps be helping to fuel Ukiku's power or magic was
- 46:58the close proximity of her grave to their home, where the doll
- 47:02resided. So in order to distance the doll
- 47:05from the grave. The family approached the
- 47:07Meninge Buddhist Temple in Hokkaido and over the years the
- 47:12dolls reputation for being haunted had spread throughout
- 47:15the community and indeed the majority of the country.
- 47:19This was more than likely due to the various interactions between
- 47:23the spiritual community and the Suzuki family finding the doll
- 47:27to be mesmerizing and possibly a unique opportunity to commute
- 47:32and interact with the dead if the stories were true.
- 47:36The leaders and priests of the Menaji Temple agreed to home
- 47:40Okiku permanently. As with many legends, we find
- 47:44lots of details to be exaggerated over time, and
- 47:47perhaps some of the details to not be true at all.
- 47:51And this is what the. Priests were originally.
- 47:52Thinking that perhaps due to grief, the family was dealing
- 47:57with other spiritual ailments, perhaps unrelated to the doll or
- 48:01causing the doll to be a vessel of swords.
- 48:05For restless spirits, however, as the years came, and when, as
- 48:09Akiku now called the temple her home, they began to slowly but
- 48:14surely experienced the same strangeness the Suzuki's had for
- 48:19all of those years. Akiku's hair continued to grow,
- 48:23and this baffled the priests. They would eventually have the
- 48:26hair trimmed and tested, and the hair.
- 48:29Was said to belong to a little girl.
- 48:33They found that the entity seemed to be appeased when her
- 48:35hair was trimmed and combed, and this led to less activity for a
- 48:40time. But the same activity, the
- 48:43knocking, banging, and disembodied voices, would soon
- 48:48plague the temple as well. No, Kiku's power only seemed to
- 48:53grow. Any priest who seemed skeptical
- 48:56of the doll or attempted to cleanse it themselves soon had
- 49:00their dreams haunted as well. Turning their sleep into
- 49:03restless fits, their homes and rooms soon also began to
- 49:08manifest the very same activity that the temple was now
- 49:12exhibiting. With no remedy seeming to work,
- 49:16the leaders turn to appeasement instead, hoping that gestures of
- 49:20goodwill would keep the entity at Bay as years turn to decades
- 49:25and as we've come into the 21st century.
- 49:28The priests of multiple generations now have overseen
- 49:32and cared for the doll known as a kiku, and those some of the
- 49:36more violent activity has faded. The general consensus is that
- 49:41she is now just as powerful as she was, or is perhaps more
- 49:44powerful as she's continued to age.
- 49:48It seems like as the more her fame and notoriety grows, the
- 49:52more visitors she has, the stronger she becomes.
- 49:57She continues to invade the dreams of those who come to
- 50:00visit her and her hair is growing faster and more afraid,
- 50:05she said, to drive tourists mad who doubt her, with many people
- 50:09even reporting that besides seeing her strange hair and
- 50:13feeling a malevolent presence when visiting.
- 50:16Her. They've also had her stock and
- 50:18appear in their dreams, some more disturbing, and recent
- 50:22reports have even suggested that her mouth is slowly opening.
- 50:27And that if you dare to appear inside of it, you may just catch
- 50:30a glimpse of baby like teeth sprouting from her porcelain
- 50:34gums, as if whoever or whatever she is is slowly turning to
- 50:41flesh and bone. The paranormal displays of her
- 50:45power continue to occur as well. Her permanent home, located
- 50:49within the managing temple is her own private shrine where she
- 50:53sits in a small wooden box on display.
- 50:57It is here that she watches and waits for anyone and everyone
- 51:02who dares to play with fire and invoke the power of the entity
- 51:07known as Okiku. But what are your thoughts?
- 51:12Was Akiku the girl trapped inside of the doll?
- 51:15In my opinion, although her spirit would be much older now,
- 51:19at the time of her death she was either close to or was three
- 51:23years. Old.
- 51:24And no person at that age is capable of true malice, to the
- 51:28point to where she would become aware enough to begin to blame
- 51:32her parents and then torment them for decades to come as
- 51:36children, our parents, or our family, our entire world.
- 51:41So I find it incredibly difficult to think that these
- 51:44bizarre happenings were the result of her soul being
- 51:47restless and imbuing the doll. What I find more likely and all
- 51:52the more interesting, really. Is the thought of invocation or
- 51:56the imbuing of the doll like a conduit or a vessel of sorts?
- 52:02Akiku the girl was, as they said, inseparable from the
- 52:05stall. She fed it, bathed it, took naps
- 52:09with it, and everything else a small child would do with that
- 52:13wonderful imagination that they have.
- 52:15But could all of this dedication and focus, accompanied with the
- 52:19tragedy that took place, allow for a portal to open?
- 52:23For an entity, whether non human or restless human spirit, to
- 52:28inhabit the doll, and by non human I mean a demon, This would
- 52:34make sense to me. Something that enjoys and grows
- 52:37more powerful off of pain and misfortune or the emotional
- 52:41torment of others as it causes the pain it feeds off of it and
- 52:46grows ever stronger. This would not only explain the
- 52:49malevolent manifestations of whatever entity is present.
- 52:53But would also explain the still present force and the alleged
- 52:57ever growing power of it. And depending on the entity
- 53:00strength, it could also explain why the cleansings thus far have
- 53:05failed. However, if you find yourself
- 53:08taking a trip to Japan anytime soon or you happen to call Japan
- 53:12home if you find yourself in Hokkaido, you may want to steer
- 53:17clear of the menaging temple. Because if you don't.
- 53:21The entity that inhabits the doll, known as a Kiku, may just
- 53:25use you as its next feeding source, where it'll begin to
- 53:29plague your dreams, making you twist and turn.
- 53:34Sweat and fear as it grows ever stronger and attempts to cross
- 53:40from its world into ours, making our plaintiff existence it's
- 53:47permanent residence. After a flood destroys their
- 53:51home, a family is forced to relocate to a new home which
- 53:56they believe is going to be a fresh start for them.
- 53:59However, it turns out to be a fresh new hell instead.
- 54:04From demonic attacks, nightmares, visuals, and
- 54:08terrifying manifestations, this is 1 haunting story you won't
- 54:13want to miss. This is the untold story of the
- 54:17smirl haunting. In Pennsylvania and the
- 54:20monstrous creature that stocked its walls, the timeline of
- 54:29events is rough at best, but I've done my best to make the
- 54:33most coherent retelling of the story, so please keep that in
- 54:38mind. Raging floods as a result of
- 54:42Hurricane Agnes have destroyed the homes of many families.
- 54:46And one such family was the SMURLS.
- 54:50The Smurl family consisted of Janet and Jack Smurl and their
- 54:55four young children, Heather, Shannon, Karen, and Don.
- 55:00With their home destroyed in the Wilkes Barre, PA area.
- 55:05Feeling as if they had been uprooted and tossed about like
- 55:08the rushing waters that took their house, the SMURLS decide
- 55:13to temporarily relocate to West Pittson.
- 55:17Where Jack's parents currently lived, after explaining the
- 55:21situation and staying with the couple for a short time, they
- 55:25were surprised and ultimately blessed when Jack's parents
- 55:29proposed an idea to them. They had found an old duplex, a
- 55:33bit of a fixer upper, also in West Pittson.
- 55:37The two of them could live on one side and Jack, Janet and the
- 55:41kids on the other. That way they could look out for
- 55:44one another. And of course, spend more time
- 55:47together. Not in a position to or wanting
- 55:50to say no, Jack and Janet humbly accepted their offer, but all
- 55:55too soon they would be confronted with the question,
- 55:59was this blessing truly a curse? With Jack's parents paying for
- 56:04them all to move into the new house, they soon find themselves
- 56:08rehomed and living in the newly purchased duplex.
- 56:12Located on Chase St. there in West Pittston.
- 56:16Although the home would need some work, the neighborhood
- 56:19seemed friendly and inviting. A good place to raise a family,
- 56:24The family collectively puts their efforts into repainting,
- 56:28retooling and other repairs, but in no time the slightly rundown
- 56:33home was feeling fresh, vibrant and modern, making the Smurls
- 56:38feel ever more at home. And hopeful for the future.
- 56:43However, this would not last forever, for it seemed that each
- 56:47time they banged a hammer, each time they drove a nail into a
- 56:51wall, and with every drop of paint, they woke something up
- 56:56within the house itself, something that perhaps had been
- 57:00slumbering there for quite some time.
- 57:03During this time, small episodes of strangeness began to
- 57:07manifest. Seeming rather benign at first,
- 57:12tools began to disappear, only to reappear hours later in
- 57:17different spots. Old stains that covered the
- 57:20walls began to seep through the fresh coats of pain, and several
- 57:25appliances in their kitchen had mysteriously caught fire even
- 57:30though they were unplugged. Along with these oddities, the
- 57:34family would also begin to smell awful odors that overwhelmed the
- 57:38entire house like an omnipresent floating cloud of rotting meat
- 57:44that hung over them, only to disperse mere moments later
- 57:48after being detected. But despite these weird events,
- 57:53the family didn't really think much of it.
- 57:55They were just thankful to have a roof over their heads.
- 57:58Jack and Janet continue to rebuild their lives.
- 58:02Jack fortunately had since gotten a better job than the one
- 58:06he had had previously and was promoted.
- 58:09During this time he was also able to coach his daughter's
- 58:12softball team. The children had re acclimated
- 58:15to a new school and we're getting good grades.
- 58:19And Jana had become pregnant with baby #5 and also helped
- 58:23organize an anti drunk driving group at the local high school.
- 58:27And Jack's parents were doing great as well.
- 58:31That all of this positivity, unfortunately, would not last.
- 58:36By 1974, things began to change for the smirls.
- 58:41It began when Mary Smirl, Jack's mother, suffered a heart attack.
- 58:46This led to the entire family struggling to make ends meet,
- 58:50and whether it was a result of the renovations or something
- 58:54else, something paranormal had began to manifest and make
- 58:59itself known. It began when Janet began to
- 59:02hear the voice of her motherinlaw.
- 59:05Who? Shortly after, her heart attack
- 59:07was now at home and recovering, doing what she could to help
- 59:11her. She would hear her name being
- 59:13called out from Mary and would rush to her aid to help her with
- 59:17anything and everything that she could possibly need.
- 59:20But the strange thing was, Mary at times would either be
- 59:24unconscious, sleeping, or wouldn't have had called for her
- 59:28at all. Attributing this bizarre
- 59:30phenomena distress at first, she writes it off.
- 59:34However, Mary soon starts experiencing her own
- 59:38strangeness. She too, as if the words had
- 59:42come from Janet's mouth herself, would hear her name being
- 59:45called. Only one confronted, Janet would
- 59:48have no idea what she was talking about.
- 59:51But that wasn't all, of course, the stains that had previously
- 59:56been painted over and were thought to be covered.
- 59:59Began to seep through yet again, and new stains began to appear
- 1:00:04as well, with several appearing on the hardwood floors of the
- 1:00:08home. As the days progressed, the
- 1:00:11oldest small child soon began to experience the presence as well.
- 1:00:16She would often be woken up in the dead of night, frozen with
- 1:00:19fear and unable to move. She would see translucent
- 1:00:24figures standing above her or at the edge of her bed, staring.
- 1:00:29And watching her. And although it wasn't exclusive
- 1:00:33to the midnight hour, the activity seemed to pick up at
- 1:00:36night. Often when Jack was at work or
- 1:00:40gone, Janet began to have violent and sickening encounters
- 1:00:44with the being that she couldn't see.
- 1:00:47She began to be molested by an unseen force.
- 1:00:52These interactions left her hysterical, feeling violated and
- 1:00:57unclean. Trying to come to terms with
- 1:01:00what was happening to them, the family's luck continued to
- 1:01:04worsen. Additional appliances, including
- 1:01:08a TV set, went up in flames, causing smoke and fire damage to
- 1:01:13the home on several occasions. And then, like the TV, the other
- 1:01:18appliances were not plugged in in order for the family to save
- 1:01:22money, which makes it all the more mysterious on top of this.
- 1:01:28Several water pipes, which are fairly new after the family had
- 1:01:31initially renovated the home, began to leak, not only causing
- 1:01:36water damage to the house, but adding to their financial.
- 1:01:40Woes as well. The string of bad luck will
- 1:01:43continue for the SMURLS, and by 1977 the activity in the home
- 1:01:49became much more aggressive. The family's radio began to turn
- 1:01:54itself on and. Off.
- 1:01:56Typically a strange hours. And almost always, when the
- 1:01:59family was trying to sleep, the sinks in their bathrooms began
- 1:02:04to turn themselves on, pouring what little money they had left
- 1:02:09literally down the drain, and their toilets began to flush by
- 1:02:13themselves. Along with this activity, the
- 1:02:16sounds of footsteps began to be heard all throughout the house,
- 1:02:20and even on the insides of the walls, drawers began to open and
- 1:02:26close by themselves. And coupled with these
- 1:02:29happenings was again the stench of rotting mean.
- 1:02:33But the family would begin to describe as the dead smell,
- 1:02:38Except instead of dissipating almost as soon as it was
- 1:02:41detected before or in one particular area of the house,
- 1:02:46the smell would permeate all throughout the house and would
- 1:02:50linger for minutes or sometimes even hours up until this point,
- 1:02:55besides seeing things being moved.
- 1:02:58Dealing with the stains, pipes and appliances, Jack hadn't been
- 1:03:03targeted, so to speak, by whatever paranormal force that
- 1:03:07was now fully awake within the Smurl residence.
- 1:03:11But one night, when he was trying to get some sleep after a
- 1:03:14long day's work, his side of the sheets were pulled from his body
- 1:03:20and the sensation of dozens of hands touching and grabbing him.
- 1:03:26Ensured that not only was he not going to get the rest that night
- 1:03:30due to sheer terror, but that perhaps his wife had been
- 1:03:34telling the truth. Janet, shortly after moving into
- 1:03:37the house had become pregnant and this time had given birth to
- 1:03:42two baby girls, expanding the Smurl family to six children
- 1:03:47shortly after the twins were brought home.
- 1:03:50It seemed like whatever presence that have been woken up was
- 1:03:53making itself known. It became more aggressive, more
- 1:03:57vindictive, as if it was jealous or hated the living.
- 1:04:02One morning, while the majority of the children were at school
- 1:04:06and napping and the rest of the adults were out, Janet was
- 1:04:10headed to the kitchen to pour herself a freshly brewed cup of
- 1:04:14coffee. As she turned around the corner,
- 1:04:18her blood ran cold, standing in the middle of the kitchen.
- 1:04:22With a stain seeming to materialize directly underneath
- 1:04:26it. It was a translucent figure with
- 1:04:30hollow eyes frozen in place. Upon seeing it was if she
- 1:04:34blinked, whatever this creature was was gone.
- 1:04:39Was this what was responsible for the multitude of paranormal
- 1:04:42happenings within their house? As time progressed, Janet again
- 1:04:48would continue to hear her name being called out.
- 1:04:51No one else was there over and over and over again, strangely
- 1:04:59as it was before. In the beginning, the voices
- 1:05:02would often sound like her motherinlaw, Mary, and even
- 1:05:06after double or triple checking sometimes to make sure she
- 1:05:10wasn't losing her mind, Mary would be nowhere to be found.
- 1:05:14Janet truly was alone, other strange things that were heard
- 1:05:19during this time. Would be heard from the other
- 1:05:21side of the duplex. Couples do argue, and some
- 1:05:26fight. That just tends to happen to
- 1:05:28most, unfortunately. But these fights were something
- 1:05:32else. Jack's parents began to hear
- 1:05:35yelling and screaming, sometimes even items breaking.
- 1:05:40Coming from the other side of the duplex where Jack and Janet
- 1:05:44lived, these fights became so violent.
- 1:05:47That not only did they think their marriage was collapsing,
- 1:05:50but they began to become concerned for Janet and the
- 1:05:53children's safety. One night, Jack's father
- 1:05:57couldn't take it anymore. He walked from their front door
- 1:06:01to the other side, and with the fight still raging, he threw the
- 1:06:05door open, only to be greeted with silence.
- 1:06:11The entire family was asleep. Not knowing what to make of this
- 1:06:17discovery, he simply left bewildered.
- 1:06:22But the supposed audio of the fights would continue shortly
- 1:06:27after the bizarre discovery. Mary would experience something
- 1:06:31that almost gave her another heart attack.
- 1:06:35One evening, while her husband was still at work and she was
- 1:06:38alone on their side of the duplex, She began to hear her
- 1:06:42name being whispered. And it sounded like Janet, but
- 1:06:46it was right within earshot, or several feet of where she had
- 1:06:50been weirded out, as most of us would be.
- 1:06:54She began to make her way towards the voice that was
- 1:06:56calling out to her, and that's when she saw it.
- 1:07:01Standing in her living room with a stain seeping underneath its
- 1:07:05feet was the same translucent being that Janet had claimed she
- 1:07:10had seen just a short while ago. And terrifyingly, its mouth was
- 1:07:16mimicking Janet's voice and calling out her name, Frozen and
- 1:07:22terror at first. With her heart.
- 1:07:24Racing, Mary ran to the door, exited, and immediately went
- 1:07:30into Jack and Janet's door, absolutely petrified with fear.
- 1:07:35The talks that followed. This event in particular is what
- 1:07:38led to most of the individual experiences being laid out in
- 1:07:41the open. For everyone to know, they would
- 1:07:45all come to the realization that whatever force that was in their
- 1:07:48house was not friendly. Shannon Smurl, who was only
- 1:07:53seven years old during this time, would be the next target.
- 1:07:58One day, as she casually walked through the kitchen and into the
- 1:08:02dining room, a large glass light fixture fell and crashed into
- 1:08:07her, cutting her and raising the alarm bells for the entire
- 1:08:11house. Again, it seemed like the
- 1:08:14paranormal being or force hated life and now was possibly trying
- 1:08:20to end it if the opportunity presented itself.
- 1:08:25Scared but strapped for cash, they were all seemingly stuck in
- 1:08:29what was supposed to be their fresh start, but instead at this
- 1:08:33point was becoming their fresh. Hell.
- 1:08:36Shannon will continue to experience strangeness of her
- 1:08:39own as well. And her diary.
- 1:08:42And later she would recount that often times she would wake up
- 1:08:46and find herself floating above her bed, literally levitating
- 1:08:51several feet above her bed. Some nights while floating, she
- 1:08:56would suddenly be thrown across the room and into a wall, so
- 1:09:01much force as she thought she would be crushed.
- 1:09:05The climax of these attacks on Shannon happened one night.
- 1:09:09When she woke up to find herself floating once again, but instead
- 1:09:14of being led back down or smacked into a nearby wall, her
- 1:09:18door was flung open and she was thrown out of her room and down
- 1:09:24the stairs. Her parents heard this happen
- 1:09:27and rushed towards the screams of their little girl to find her
- 1:09:31absolutely hysterical and in pain.
- 1:09:34Fortunately, however, she would be okay physically.
- 1:09:39After this event, in particular, another unfortunate sold out be
- 1:09:43targeted in the small duplex was the family's German shepherd,
- 1:09:47Simon. Simon would be found floating in
- 1:09:50the air, confused and concerned, and this new development and
- 1:09:55activity was not just exclusive to Shannon or their beloved dog.
- 1:10:01Alongside the intensified attacks on Janet, she too would
- 1:10:05begin finding herself woken up in the middle of the night.
- 1:10:09Floating in the air and sometimes horrifically without
- 1:10:14control of her body, she would then also be assaulted.
- 1:10:19However, Jack wasn't always gone at this time.
- 1:10:22Frequently at this point he would be home and sleeping
- 1:10:25beside her, but could never seem to wake up as if he was being
- 1:10:29kept asleep or in a state of paralysis.
- 1:10:33Why the events took place? Coupled along these intense and
- 1:10:37abhorrent manifestations came activity that was plain creepy.
- 1:10:43Not a day would go by without the family hearing scratching
- 1:10:46noises coming from within the. Walls or deep?
- 1:10:51Drawn out breaths coming from behind them, feeling the exhale
- 1:10:55upon their necks, making the hairs on their entire body stand
- 1:11:00on end. Jacket times after a hard day's
- 1:11:03work. Would like to unwind and
- 1:11:05decompress by watching some TV in the living room.
- 1:11:09On occasion he would fall asleep to whatever was on before
- 1:11:13eventually waking back up and making his way to bed.
- 1:11:18However, this night he found himself awake and coherent but
- 1:11:23unable to move, as if he was paralyzed or stuck in some kind
- 1:11:29of a glue trap like an insect. Unable to break free, he glanced
- 1:11:35around the room, trying to discover the source of his
- 1:11:38distress. It was here that he was met face
- 1:11:42to face with this being this demon that seemed to be plugging
- 1:11:47their lives. The creature grabbed him from
- 1:11:50the back and slammed him onto the floor, began repeatedly
- 1:11:55bashing his head into the hardwood below before
- 1:11:59disappearing. After.
- 1:12:01This. Jack didn't watch TV to unwind
- 1:12:04anymore. As a matter of fact, no one
- 1:12:08could unwind. They were petrified at whatever
- 1:12:11was taking place in the house, unable to afford to move between
- 1:12:16all the adults and seemingly stuck between a rock and a hard
- 1:12:20place. Scared and unable to figure out
- 1:12:23what to do, they began to seek help wherever they thought they
- 1:12:27could find it. It was now winter.
- 1:12:30And the family, besides their daily duties, spent most of
- 1:12:34their time indoors. While watching TV1 Afternoon,
- 1:12:39they saw an interview with Ed and Lorraine Warren, world
- 1:12:42renowned paranormal experts and demonologists.
- 1:12:46Not being particularly religious and unsure of where to turn,
- 1:12:51they decided to reach out to the couple and were surprised when
- 1:12:55they made contact after speaking with them for some time.
- 1:12:59The Warrens agreed to come to their house to meet in person
- 1:13:02with the SMURLS and to investigate, and within a week
- 1:13:06that's exactly what they did. After an initial meeting with
- 1:13:10the family, hearing their testimonies in person and after
- 1:13:14exploring the home, the Warrens decided seems genuine and it's
- 1:13:19worth investigating, and they begin their usual process of
- 1:13:23bringing in their team for an extended period of time to
- 1:13:27document. And Mull over potential
- 1:13:30solutions for the family. After several months of the
- 1:13:33documenting team, living with the family and experiencing
- 1:13:37strange activity themselves, such as furniture stacking on
- 1:13:41top of itself, along with several other previously
- 1:13:45mentioned happenings such as the stains and attacks on individual
- 1:13:50members of the home, the rain finally comes to the conclusion
- 1:13:54after having a vision within the house.
- 1:13:57That they were dealing with a total of 4 entities.
- 1:14:01One was that of an old woman who she believed was not a threat to
- 1:14:04the family but was simply being held against her will within the
- 1:14:08home. One was a younger woman who was
- 1:14:11angry and resentful and could be violent, and the other was a man
- 1:14:16who took the life of his wife and his lover and had been
- 1:14:20hanged in the same spot 100 years earlier by a vengeful
- 1:14:25crowd. The final entity was that of a
- 1:14:28demon. And this demon not only was
- 1:14:31strong and keeping the other three spirits under its heel of
- 1:14:35control, but would use them to strengthen itself and wreak
- 1:14:39havoc upon the family, to sow discord, anxiety and fear, all
- 1:14:46things to which it could feed on and continue to grow stronger
- 1:14:51after reaching this conclusion and having gathered sufficient
- 1:14:55information. The warrant spoke to Father
- 1:14:58McKenna, who was a Vatican sanctioned exorcist and had
- 1:15:02worked with them over 50 times on separate cases in the past,
- 1:15:07so he was no stranger to the demonic.
- 1:15:11But after his. Arrival and attempted exorcism.
- 1:15:14The activity only increased in aggression and hostility, and
- 1:15:20for whatever reason, it was not tied to the home anymore.
- 1:15:24But rather the family members themselves.
- 1:15:27Jack began to experience horrific visions of the creature
- 1:15:31at work, as did his father. And alongside the continued
- 1:15:36paranormal activity taking place at their home, their daughter
- 1:15:40Karen fell seriously ill with a fever that the doctors couldn't
- 1:15:44diagnose at the time and almost died.
- 1:15:48Several of the other girls were also visited by the sickening
- 1:15:52presence at night. As Janet also was and continued
- 1:15:57to be, the demon also began to physically attack the family
- 1:16:01more often, causing stinging, scratches and cuts on their
- 1:16:05bodies at random times. As well as.
- 1:16:08Deep and bruising bite marks. Still trying to help the family
- 1:16:13rid themselves of this creature, and fearing for the family's
- 1:16:17continued torment, the Warrens convinced the Smurls to allow a
- 1:16:21second exorcism to take place. And McKenna again would visit
- 1:16:25and conduct a second exorcism months later in the early
- 1:16:29spring. During this exorcism ritual, EV
- 1:16:33P's were recorded, which when played back after the fact,
- 1:16:38would reveal multiple entities laughing at and berating them
- 1:16:42for their efforts. Ed Warren would also be choked
- 1:16:46during this visit and would be incapacitated for multiple days
- 1:16:50after, unfortunately. The second exorcism also failed,
- 1:16:56leading to even more violent manifestations of evil trying to
- 1:17:01get away from it all for even just a few days.
- 1:17:04The family went on a camping trip to the Pocono mountains,
- 1:17:08but the demon would follow them there as well, tormenting them
- 1:17:12wherever they went, allowing for no rest, no decompression, and
- 1:17:18no. Peace.
- 1:17:20Upon returning to their home following this trip and getting
- 1:17:23even more desperate, they decided to reach out to a local
- 1:17:27TV show called People Are Talking to see if anyone could
- 1:17:31possibly help them. They did however remain
- 1:17:34anonymous during their interview and this call for help.
- 1:17:37However, when unanswered but the demons seemed to retaliate
- 1:17:42against them for it, Janet would once again be hurled against a
- 1:17:46wall. And Jack would experience
- 1:17:48something truly terrifying and new as he woke up in the early
- 1:17:53morning to get ready for work. Before the sun had come up, a
- 1:17:58light rain tapped the glass of the windows outside as he
- 1:18:02dressed himself and began to gather his things for his work
- 1:18:05day departure, he came down the stairs and was greeted by a
- 1:18:10disgusting and horrid creature. Standing in front of the door
- 1:18:15was a monstrous being. Whose head almost touched the
- 1:18:18ceiling. It resembled a horrible
- 1:18:21amalgamation of a man and a pig standing upright on 2 legs is
- 1:18:28screeched and rushed towards him.
- 1:18:31But as he fell backwards onto the stairs, hurting his back,
- 1:18:35the creature stood over him face to face, snarling before it
- 1:18:41disappeared. This manifestation disturbed and
- 1:18:45rattled Jack to his core. The same morning shortly after
- 1:18:49Jack had left for work because although terrified, he still had
- 1:18:53to provide for his family if they ever wanted to have a
- 1:18:56chance of escaping this hellscape of a home.
- 1:18:59Janet was woken up a short while later by a hand, reaching up
- 1:19:03through her mattress and grabbing the back of her neck
- 1:19:08and pulling her towards it and choking her.
- 1:19:11After these events, horrific snarling noises like that of a
- 1:19:15pig. Could be heard coming from
- 1:19:18inside the walls. The time was now August of 1986,
- 1:19:24and the Smurls felt that the risk of ridicule did not
- 1:19:27outweigh the need for their story to reach a wider audience,
- 1:19:31so that somehow, somewhere someone could possibly help them
- 1:19:36be freed from this torment. It would soon be granted an
- 1:19:39interview with the Wilkes Barre Sunday newspaper, but instead of
- 1:19:43someone reading. And immediately coming to their
- 1:19:46aid, their home quickly became a tourist attraction.
- 1:19:50Instead, the press, skeptics and curious onlookers alike began to
- 1:19:56visit the house and camp outside of it at all hours of the day
- 1:20:00and night, with some particularly weird people even
- 1:20:04coming up and staring into the home's windows themselves, some
- 1:20:09of their neighbors who had seen and heard strange things coming
- 1:20:12from the small residence. Began to turn on them.
- 1:20:16They believe that the family was concocting some kind of a story
- 1:20:20to try and make money. Eventually, however, despite the
- 1:20:23torment inside and outside of the home, now that they were
- 1:20:27experiencing, the SMURLS would be contacted by a medium by the
- 1:20:31name of Mary Alice Renkman, who offered to meet with them.
- 1:20:35Upon meeting the family and walking through the home, it was
- 1:20:39also Mary's conviction that there were four entities within
- 1:20:42the house. Three human spirits and one who
- 1:20:47had never been human, thus corroborating the Warren's
- 1:20:50beliefs about the situation as well.
- 1:20:52She would, however, take things a bit further.
- 1:20:55She identified the old woman by the name of Abigail, the
- 1:20:59murderous man as Patrick, and the violent and illtempered
- 1:21:03spirit as Patrick's wife. And the 4th entity of course
- 1:21:09could not be identified by name, but was indeed a very powerful
- 1:21:13demon. The press coverage, despite the
- 1:21:15ridicule and the positive acquaintance of Mary, also had
- 1:21:19pushed the Scranton Catholic Diocese into action as well.
- 1:21:23They offered to take over the investigation and the meantime
- 1:21:27the Warrens had not given up on the family, but rather had
- 1:21:31reached out to several more priests and had arranged for a
- 1:21:34Mass exorcism to be conducted, with four priests taking part as
- 1:21:39well as multiple prayer groups. Alongside this, now Bishop
- 1:21:44McKenna came in for a third and final time and conducted an
- 1:21:48exorcism on the House for the family.
- 1:21:51And fortunately the ritual, at least for a time, seemed to work
- 1:21:57because following it there were no disturbances for about 3
- 1:22:01months. But as winter set in that year,
- 1:22:05just before Christmas of 1986, Jack would again see the
- 1:22:10creature that had tormented him. For all of those years.
- 1:22:14This time, however, it beckoned him to allow it to take over,
- 1:22:19but clutching a rosary in his pocket that had been gifted to
- 1:22:22him by the church, he prayed as hard as he could, and thankfully
- 1:22:27this time the demon vanished, never to be seen again.
- 1:22:33However, the putrid smells and violent manifestations would
- 1:22:36return and continue day in and day out.
- 1:22:41Frustrated, hopeless and exhausted, the Smurls by this
- 1:22:47point had finally saved enough to be able to leave this dreaded
- 1:22:51duplex on Chase St. And decided they needed the
- 1:22:54closest. Thing to a fresh start as they
- 1:22:56could get. So when they finally did move,
- 1:23:00they moved to a completely new town, one where the ridicule
- 1:23:04would not find them, but like the terrible pattern shown
- 1:23:08before. The demon did not seem to be
- 1:23:11tied to the property, but rather the family.
- 1:23:15The activity started back up almost as soon as they had moved
- 1:23:19in and laid their heads to rest in their new home.
- 1:23:23It would take some time, but in 1988 the church finally
- 1:23:27sanctioned 1/4 exorcism, but this time at their new
- 1:23:31residence, and this finally seems to have given the family
- 1:23:35peace. A few things I would like to
- 1:23:38mention, however, are these. From my own personal experience
- 1:23:43and many other stories I've researched, it seems like
- 1:23:46renovations, particularly on older homes, can wake up dormant
- 1:23:50spirits or hauntings. Perhaps this is what happened to
- 1:23:54the SMURLS. It's hard to tell if the
- 1:23:56assaults were one or multiple demonic entities, but if they
- 1:24:00did truly exist, how did they get in the home to begin with?
- 1:24:05And my guess? Is that the collection of
- 1:24:07negative energy attracts them like moths to a flame.
- 1:24:11Perhaps they enjoy or feed off of human suffering.
- 1:24:15This would only make sense to me, considering that they hate
- 1:24:17humans, refuse to bow to them in the beginning.
- 1:24:21Perhaps once they're embedded in one's life, they continue to sow
- 1:24:24said suffering to exploit and grow stronger, ultimately trying
- 1:24:29to take the human's life and their soul back with them to
- 1:24:33hell. I would also like to mention
- 1:24:36that scratching on a person and inside the walls, as well as
- 1:24:40disembodied breathing are all signs of demonic infestation And
- 1:24:45for one reason or another, having actually experienced this
- 1:24:49personally, seeing the manifestation of a pig like
- 1:24:52demon or a creature, as well as hearing pigs snarling coming
- 1:24:56from within the walls is considered to be a serious or
- 1:25:00incredibly strong sign. Of a very strong demonic
- 1:25:04infestation as far as the initial activity, the seeping
- 1:25:08through of the stains, the sinks turning on, toilets flushing on
- 1:25:13their own and leaky pipes. Those initially could be written
- 1:25:17off as poor skill when the work was initially done, but it
- 1:25:20seemed like with this story, all of these things were working
- 1:25:23perfectly fine for months before they all of a sudden, almost at
- 1:25:27the same time, began to go wrong.
- 1:25:30While costing the family money that they didn't have and money
- 1:25:34at the time seemed to be their main issue as well as the
- 1:25:37paranormal. So perhaps the demon knew and
- 1:25:40exploited this to add to the misery it was feeding on.
- 1:25:44But truly at the end of the day the conclusion is yours to make.
- 1:25:48Was the small haunting legitimate or just another tale
- 1:25:52concocted for money or inside the broken minds of individuals
- 1:25:57who claim to have experienced it?
- 1:25:59Let me know down in the comments below.
- 1:26:02They would eventually release a book about all they had
- 1:26:04experienced called The Haunted in 1988, but financials, or how
- 1:26:09successful it was, was never released, at least not from what
- 1:26:13I could find. But what I do know is this.
- 1:26:16It's extremely important to examine a situation from all
- 1:26:20angles just before diving into it.
- 1:26:23Although a place might seem like a fresh new start, it could
- 1:26:26indeed be your fresh new hell. Those renovations that you think
- 1:26:31are going to improve your quality of life could awaken
- 1:26:34something that has been watching and waiting for a new host to
- 1:26:39attach itself to and feed upon until it can wear it down, rot,
- 1:26:45and eventually drag it back. To the depths.
- 1:26:48From where it came from when you think of the paranormal realm?
- 1:26:54What is the first thing that comes to your mind?
- 1:26:57Is it a haunted place? A person who's being tormented
- 1:27:01by unseen forces, or an object like a doll that is seemingly
- 1:27:06taken on a life of its own. Or perhaps a little of all three
- 1:27:11and more. But if you consider that a
- 1:27:14vehicle could be haunted, considering if objects could be
- 1:27:18haunted, it seems possible to me that this story may just
- 1:27:21convince you that something inhabits this vehicle, in
- 1:27:25particular, something malevolent.
- 1:27:29This strange tale over the decades has seemed to take on a
- 1:27:32life of its own, and not only has it been requested, but
- 1:27:35deserves its very own rendition here on mystery Archives.
- 1:27:39This is the haunting story of James Dean's cursed car and
- 1:27:43whether or not it continues to plague the lives of those who
- 1:27:47possess its parts. James Dean, both in the 50s, at
- 1:27:53the height of his fame, and even today, is widely considered a
- 1:27:57Hollywood icon. Born James Byron Dean in 1931,
- 1:28:02he was born into a humble background in Marion IN the only
- 1:28:07child of Mildred Wilson and Wynton Dean.
- 1:28:11Growing up, he excelled in school both academically and
- 1:28:14athletically, playing varsity baseball and basketball, as well
- 1:28:19as becoming an avid student of drama.
- 1:28:22His efforts would eventually land him at UCLA in 1949 after
- 1:28:27his high school graduation, where he began to truly pursue
- 1:28:31his passion for acting. He had first started out as a
- 1:28:35pre law major, but would soon switches major to drama.
- 1:28:39His first role in college that truly made him consider becoming
- 1:28:43an actor was when he was selected out of a group of 350
- 1:28:48other actors to portray Malcolm in the play Macbeth.
- 1:28:52Shortly after this, he also began acting in James Whitmore's
- 1:28:56workshop. Although he loved acting, his
- 1:29:00father didn't, and his choice of major would soon alienate the
- 1:29:04two from each other. But refusing to give up on his
- 1:29:07dreams, James would drop out of UCLA in January of 1951 to
- 1:29:13pursue a fulltime career as an actor.
- 1:29:16It was during this time that he began to pay his dues, so to
- 1:29:20speak. First starring in a Pepsi
- 1:29:22commercial, then landing a series of walk on roles in
- 1:29:26various movies such as Fixed Bayonets, Sailor Beware and Has
- 1:29:31Anybody Seen My Gal? While struggling to Pay the
- 1:29:34bills whilst chasing his dreams. James also worked as a parking
- 1:29:38lot attendant at CBS Studios where he would eventually meet
- 1:29:42Rogers Bracket, a radio director and agent who offered him
- 1:29:47professional advice and guidance.
- 1:29:49To assist him in furthering his career bracket would open a
- 1:29:53major door for James, a starring role in the Broadway play See
- 1:29:58the Jaguar, which would indeed continue to open many other
- 1:30:01opportunities for the aspiring actor.
- 1:30:05Moving from walk on roles in movies to several television
- 1:30:08appearances and soon a major role in a major film.
- 1:30:12He would finally receive his big break in 1953, where he starred
- 1:30:17in the movie East of Eden. It was here that his complexity
- 1:30:21as an actor and improv skills were finally able to shine
- 1:30:25almost immediately after East of Eden premiered.
- 1:30:29Dean would quickly pick up another and an even bigger role
- 1:30:32in Rebel Without a Cause, as well as another film called
- 1:30:36Giant Following soon after. Rebel Without a Cause is what
- 1:30:40seemed to make Dean a cultural icon, becoming not only an
- 1:30:44admired actor to many, but a heartthrob as well to thousands.
- 1:30:49In 1954, shortly after East of Eden had concluded being filmed,
- 1:30:54James began to take an interest in auto racing.
- 1:30:58He purchased several vehicles for the hobby, including a
- 1:31:01Triumph Tiger T110 and a Porsche 356.
- 1:31:06James competed in his first professional event at Palm
- 1:31:10Springs Rd. Races held in Palm Springs, CA,
- 1:31:14where he achieved first place in the Novice class.
- 1:31:17And 2nd place for the main event.
- 1:31:19He continued to race and would race at Bakersfield a month
- 1:31:23later where he would take first in his class and 3rd overall,
- 1:31:28really taking to the motorsport. He hoped to compete in the
- 1:31:31Indianapolis 500, but his busy filming schedule unfortunately
- 1:31:36made this impossible. His final race would occur in
- 1:31:40Santa Barbara on May 30th, 1955. During this race, he was
- 1:31:46unfortunately unable to finish due to a blown Piston.
- 1:31:50His racing career was then placed on hold by Warner
- 1:31:53Brothers, the studio in charge of the film Giant, until filming
- 1:31:57was finished. Dean would finish his scenes and
- 1:32:01while Giant was in post production with the band lifted,
- 1:32:05he decided that he would race again.
- 1:32:07However, this time he wanted something stronger and faster.
- 1:32:12On September 23rd, 1955, James purchased a new 1955 Porsche 550
- 1:32:20Spider and brought it to the legendary flimflammer George
- 1:32:24Barris to have it personalized before his next race.
- 1:32:29During the customization process, he chose Tartan Seeds,
- 1:32:33the number 130 emblazoned upon the hood, and the name Little
- 1:32:38Bastard painted on the back just underneath the Porsche emblem.
- 1:32:42On the engine cover, almost as soon as his car was done being
- 1:32:46customized and James began to drive it around, there was a
- 1:32:50series of omens that should have alerted him that something
- 1:32:54wasn't quite normal with Little Bastard.
- 1:32:57Later that day on September 23rd, James was driving his new
- 1:33:02car around Los Angeles, where he met up with British actor Alec
- 1:33:06Guinness to show him his new toy almost immediately.
- 1:33:10Alec became very wary of the car in his personal diary.
- 1:33:15He said this in regards to seeing it for the first time and
- 1:33:18this is also a summary. Of what he?
- 1:33:20Told James himself in person that day.
- 1:33:23The sports car looked sinister to me.
- 1:33:26Exhausted, hungry, feeling a little illtempered.
- 1:33:30In spite of Dean's kindness, I heard myself saying in a voice
- 1:33:34that I could hardly recognize as my own.
- 1:33:37Please, never get in it. If you get in that car, you'll
- 1:33:41be found dead in it by this time next week.
- 1:33:45After being told that his car seems sinister and that he would
- 1:33:48be found dead in it by this time next week, all James did was
- 1:33:53laugh. Exactly one week later, on
- 1:33:56September the 30th, James Dean and Rolf Lutherash, a former
- 1:34:01Luftwaffe pilot and factory trained Porsche mechanic, were
- 1:34:05at Competition Motors in Hollywood.
- 1:34:08Preparing little bastard for racing that week at the Salinas
- 1:34:12Rd. Races in Salinas, CA.
- 1:34:16The intent was for Dean to transport the car via trailer to
- 1:34:19Salinas behind his 1955 Ford Country Squire with his
- 1:34:24photographer Bill Hickman. But before it could be raced,
- 1:34:29the car needed some breakin miles on it to make sure
- 1:34:32everything was in working order. Rolf suggested driving the car
- 1:34:36to Salinas to break in the engine and familiarize himself
- 1:34:40with his new vehicle. He would also ride with him.
- 1:34:44After having a cup of coffee across the street from
- 1:34:47Competition Motors at 1:15 PM, the group departed for Salinas.
- 1:34:53At 3:30 PM, Patrolman OV Hunter said he stopped and wrote Dean a
- 1:34:58ticket just South of Bakersfield, CA, for driving 65
- 1:35:03mph. And a 55.
- 1:35:06Hickman, who was towing the trailer, would receive a ticket
- 1:35:09for 20 miles over the speed limit because he was towing a
- 1:35:12trailer in which the maximum speed allowed would have only
- 1:35:15been 45 mph. The crew would then stop at
- 1:35:19Blackwell's Corner on Route 466 for drinks.
- 1:35:23Here they also met up with Lance Ravendloe and Bruce Kessler, two
- 1:35:28other racers who would also be competing in the Salinas Rd.
- 1:35:31races. Once they had departed, at about
- 1:35:345:15 PM, Dean and Hickman drove W towards Paso Robles 1/2.
- 1:35:40An hour later, a black and white 1950 Ford Tutor coupe was headed
- 1:35:45E on 466. The vehicle was being driven by
- 1:35:49a 23 year old California polytechnical student, a man
- 1:35:53with a strange name of Donald Turnip seed.
- 1:35:57Donald made a left on Route 41 and as he crossed the center
- 1:36:01line. Dean, who was traveling around
- 1:36:0485 mph, tried to avoid him. However, despite his best
- 1:36:09efforts, the two vehicles collided head on.
- 1:36:14The Ford Coupe upon the collision, slid 39 feet down
- 1:36:17Route 466 and the westbound lane.
- 1:36:21Dean bore the brunt of the collision but stayed within the
- 1:36:24car. Vuteraj, however, was thrown
- 1:36:27from the Spider and was laying on the shoulder multiple feet
- 1:36:30away from the scene. Upon the arrival of emergency
- 1:36:34personnel, with little Bastard completely totaled, they would
- 1:36:38have to pry James from the mangled vehicle using a crowbar.
- 1:36:43An unconscious and dying James Dean was then placed into the
- 1:36:46ambulance along with a heavily injured roof.
- 1:36:50The closest hospital was 30 miles away and as the ambulance
- 1:36:55rushed towards Paso Robles War Memorial Hospital.
- 1:36:59They too, as if they had been stricken with the worst luck
- 1:37:02imaginable, would also be involved in a car accident.
- 1:37:06Despite the horrible circumstances surrounding the
- 1:37:09initial accident, the ambulance did eventually make its way to
- 1:37:12the hospital roughly 45 minutes later, and although it would
- 1:37:16take months of recovery, Rolf would live but despite the
- 1:37:21emergency crews best efforts. Dean, however, would be
- 1:37:25pronounced dead on arrival at 6:20 PM.
- 1:37:29His final cause of death upon autopsy would be determined to
- 1:37:33be a broken neck and internal hemorrhaging as a result of the
- 1:37:36crash. He also had sustained multiple
- 1:37:40broken bones, including his legs, arms and jaw, as well as
- 1:37:46multiple severe external lacerations.
- 1:37:49Donald turnipseed, however, despite his vehicle also being.
- 1:37:53Totaled walked away with barely a scratch.
- 1:37:57After his death, James Dean would be nominated for two
- 1:38:00Academy Awards in 1956 and 1957 for his roles in the East of
- 1:38:07Eden and Giant. He would also become the first
- 1:38:10actor to post humanistly win an Academy Award for one in 1956,
- 1:38:17seemingly being cut down in his prime at the young age of 24.
- 1:38:21Dean's death was an unprecedented tragedy, but the
- 1:38:25story of Little Bastard. Despite being crumpled in, the
- 1:38:28crash would be far from over. A man by the name of George
- 1:38:32Bears purchased the wrecked Porsche remnants for $2500 later
- 1:38:37that year, likely with the intent to host some sort of an
- 1:38:41exhibit with it and to sell tickets.
- 1:38:44But after he purchased it while transporting the remains, upon
- 1:38:48arriving at his shop, the car slipped off the trailer and
- 1:38:53broke the leg of his mechanic. Once it was secured in one of
- 1:38:56the shops garages, in approximately 1 month's time,
- 1:39:01while Bears was arranging for the first exhibit to open the
- 1:39:05garage housing, the car mysteriously caught fire and
- 1:39:09burned to the ground. Even more mysterious, upon
- 1:39:13surveying the damage, the Porsche had sustained no damage
- 1:39:18from the fire itself. Bears would eventually arrange
- 1:39:22for a second exhibit. Which was held at a local high
- 1:39:25school in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol.
- 1:39:29But this showing, too, was unexpectedly cut short.
- 1:39:33When the car was surrounded by onlookers and students, it
- 1:39:37suddenly fell off of its display and broke a young student's hip.
- 1:39:42Getting an eerie sense that something was off.
- 1:39:44With this car, Bears then began to sell its parts.
- 1:39:49He would sell the engine to a man named Troy McHenry.
- 1:39:52And the drivetrain to William Eskrid.
- 1:39:56The two used parts to build cars of their own and had even once
- 1:40:00raced one another and both would experience horrendous accidents.
- 1:40:05During a street race, Troy would lose control of his vehicle,
- 1:40:10veer off the street and slammed directly into a tree.
- 1:40:14The impact after Troy's tragedy, William, who was casually
- 1:40:25driving his vehicle containing the drivetrain of Little
- 1:40:29Bastard, suddenly had his wheels lock up for no reason, and upon
- 1:40:34turning while experiencing this, the car began to roll, leaving
- 1:40:40him critically injured in the crash.
- 1:40:42He, however, despite his injuries, would live while
- 1:40:47parting out what was left of the car.
- 1:40:50Bears would also sell two of the Porsche's tires, which had been
- 1:40:53untouched since the accident that claimed Dean's life.
- 1:40:57After selling the tires, he also installed them on the customer's
- 1:41:01vehicle at his shop. However, upon driving home, both
- 1:41:06of them, not one or the other, but both simultaneously
- 1:41:12exploded, causing the driver to lose control and drive off the
- 1:41:16road. They would fortunately regain
- 1:41:19control of their vehicle and despite being shaken up or
- 1:41:24unharmed, George Barris, after selling what parts he could,
- 1:41:28will continue trying to arrange exhibits for the remnants of the
- 1:41:32car to be shown. The 3rd and final exhibit that
- 1:41:36was set to happen was going to be held by the Los Angeles
- 1:41:39chapter of the National Safety Council as a traveling display.
- 1:41:44However, the truck driver who was hired to transport Little
- 1:41:48Bastard to the exhibit on a flatbed truck, a man named
- 1:41:52George Barcas, would be involved in an accident.
- 1:41:55While heading there. He would be ejected from his
- 1:41:58vehicle and would land to the side of the flatbed, and whether
- 1:42:02it was a failure of securing the remnants or something more
- 1:42:06sinister, he would be crushed and killed when the Porsche
- 1:42:11rolled off the flatbed and onto him.
- 1:42:14There would be other mishaps as the twisted Porsche would be
- 1:42:17loaned out to various exhibits across the country and the years
- 1:42:20to come. But when it was on loan to a
- 1:42:23safety exhibit Miami, FL in 1960, following the conclusion
- 1:42:28of the exhibit as it was being hauled back to Los Angeles, the
- 1:42:33truck that was carrying what was left of the vehicle would once
- 1:42:36again be involved in a fatal crash, killing the driver.
- 1:42:40But remained of the Porsche known as Little Bastard,
- 1:42:43vanished from the scene that day and to this day, all these years
- 1:42:47later, it has never been seen again, nor has any of its parts,
- 1:42:52despite collectors and enthusiasts alike willing to put
- 1:42:56up big money for even a genuine scrap of its remains.
- 1:43:00But before we speculate on what could have happened to it, I
- 1:43:03would first like to give my take on the bizarre activity that
- 1:43:06surrounds this now infamous legend to me.
- 1:43:10If there was ever something that could be considered cursed, this
- 1:43:14onceprized Porsche of James Dean very much fits the bill, given
- 1:43:18all that we've learned. But just why would it have been
- 1:43:21cursed and how? These are questions that I've
- 1:43:25pondered while researching this topic.
- 1:43:27There of course doesn't seem to be a proper answer, or even a
- 1:43:31real speculated one that would genuinely make sense that I
- 1:43:34could find. There doesn't seem to be any
- 1:43:37crazy occult ties to anyone he was involved with.
- 1:43:40The one theory that I did come across could possibly explain
- 1:43:44why, but of course this is just a theory.
- 1:43:47I don't want people getting mad at me.
- 1:43:49James Dean decides being an acclaimed actor by the young age
- 1:43:53of 24 was most definitely a heartthrob with the ladies.
- 1:43:57It's been rumored that among his various affairs with rich and
- 1:44:00powerful women, he also had multiple escapades per week.
- 1:44:04The theory I came across was this.
- 1:44:07Could it have been possible? That some starcrossed lover or
- 1:44:11fling of Deans could have placed a curse on him.
- 1:44:15Curses, of course, like anything paranormal in nature, are
- 1:44:18subject to a sense of belief in these kinds of things.
- 1:44:21Or so most think. Perhaps Dean broke the heart of
- 1:44:25the wrong person, with Dean hitting the big time and also
- 1:44:29taking up car racing in between films, or the filming of those
- 1:44:32films, perhaps one of his girlfriends rather jealous or
- 1:44:37heartbroken, or both. Placed a curse of sorts on him,
- 1:44:41either on him or something to do with his newfound love for
- 1:44:45Motorsports. How this would have exactly
- 1:44:48imprinted specifically upon the newly purchased Porsche of 1955
- 1:44:54goes far beyond my expertise, but it is the only explanation I
- 1:44:58could find that would remotely make sense aside from a horrible
- 1:45:02string of unfortunate coincidences.
- 1:45:05And strangely enough, the man who hit Dean, having the name of
- 1:45:09Donald turn up Seed. Turn up seed, in my opinion, is
- 1:45:13all too close to turn up speed. It's kind of weird, don't you
- 1:45:17think? With all of the darkness
- 1:45:19surrounding this car, Rolf had a very tragic ending as well.
- 1:45:24Upon his post rec recovery, he began to receive horrible
- 1:45:28letters from James Dean's fans blaming him for the actor's
- 1:45:32death. This eventually led to a
- 1:45:35terrible drinking problem, as he felt responsible for what had
- 1:45:38happened. He would eventually move back to
- 1:45:41Germany, where he experienced many lows, including multiple
- 1:45:45divorces and His final marriage, however, seemed to be at the
- 1:45:50lowest point in his life, having been depressed for years,
- 1:45:54coupled with other psychological problems stemming from the guilt
- 1:45:57of the accident with too much alcohol in his system in 1969.
- 1:46:03Rolf attempted to end his fourth wife.
- 1:46:06He stabbed her 14 times with a kitchen knife while she slept.
- 1:46:11Afterwards, he attempted to take his own but failed.
- 1:46:15He was however arrested and would spend a lengthy term in a
- 1:46:19mental institution instead of prison.
- 1:46:23This would also be his last and final divorce.
- 1:46:27He would, for a short time, bounce back as both a Porsche
- 1:46:30mechanic. And would also be a racer
- 1:46:32himself. Once again, but again as well,
- 1:46:36he succumbed to psychological issues, falling back on hard
- 1:46:40times. In July of 1981, he signed a
- 1:46:43contract for 20,000 Deutsche marks for a feature in a TV show
- 1:46:49discussing the accident and the death of James Dean.
- 1:46:52As he contemplated what he was going to discuss, he would
- 1:46:56become heavily intoxicated and later that night.
- 1:47:00He would crash his Honda Civic into the wall of a residence and
- 1:47:04coupe for sale. Ironically, like James, he too
- 1:47:08had to be cut from the wreck. It would be pronounced dead on
- 1:47:12arrival at the hospital. Now, where exactly could the
- 1:47:16remains of the Porsche have gone?
- 1:47:19The most likely explanation, in my opinion, had to have been
- 1:47:22bystanders who witnessed the crash, and my guess is that
- 1:47:27perhaps they didn't know exactly what they had.
- 1:47:30But rather saw dollar signs. This could perhaps explain why
- 1:47:33it didn't show back up. Perhaps people who owned the
- 1:47:36parts and or the vehicles with the parts didn't know what they
- 1:47:40indeed possessed. But what also makes this strange
- 1:47:44is that they've never shown back up at all.
- 1:47:48There is one transaxle that was rumored to be from James Dean's
- 1:47:52car that was found in a wooden box in rural Massachusetts, but
- 1:47:57from what I could find. It has yet to be confirmed as
- 1:48:00genuine. It was either that people didn't
- 1:48:03know what they had, or something terrible happened to them as
- 1:48:06well. And what remains they did
- 1:48:08possess or parts that they had put in their cars could have
- 1:48:12ended up scrapped somewhere never to be seen again.
- 1:48:16Although I don't want to persuade you one way or another
- 1:48:19with all the strange, dark and terrible events that surround
- 1:48:23the Porsche 550 Spider known as James Dean's Little Bastard.
- 1:48:28One certainly has to consider that there is something
- 1:48:31otherworldly or curse surrounding this case.
- 1:48:35But is it a curse? Is it something evil or is it
- 1:48:38just a horrible? String of coincidences?
- 1:48:41Let me know down in the comments below either way.
- 1:48:45This is 1 car I have. Absolutely no desire to see, let
- 1:48:49alone ride in one that contains any piece of it when a family
- 1:48:53moves into a new house. They discover its gruesome past
- 1:48:58and are met face to face with a grotesque horror.
- 1:49:02They must choose to fight or let their ever growing fear consume
- 1:49:06them. Will they make it out alive or
- 1:49:09will evil triumph? This is the untold story of the
- 1:49:13terrifying Snideacher family haunting, better known as a
- 1:49:17haunting in Connecticut. Evil entities, specters of
- 1:49:24another world. That create misery and sow
- 1:49:28discord to engorge and strengthen themselves?
- 1:49:32Are they simply figments of the human imagination, a byproduct
- 1:49:35of the human condition, if you will.
- 1:49:38This story, as well as many others that have been covered
- 1:49:40here on this channel, beg the question, Do evil beings from
- 1:49:44another world truly exist? I'm not here to.
- 1:49:46Convince you either way. All that I ask is that you draw
- 1:49:50your own conclusions because this story like others.
- 1:49:55Will make you truly wonder just what could be lurking in the
- 1:49:58shadows. The day is a cold one.
- 1:50:03Snow drifts down from the sky and covers everything in a layer
- 1:50:08of frozen powder. But colder still is the life
- 1:50:12altering news the Snydecker family has just received.
- 1:50:16Their son, Phillip has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's
- 1:50:19lymphoma at the age of 14. And unless something short of a
- 1:50:24miracle takes place to put the disease into remission, he will
- 1:50:28die in less than six months. He is already deteriorated from
- 1:50:33a strong and healthy boy to a ghost of his former self.
- 1:50:37For Phillip to undergo experimental treatments, he has
- 1:50:41to see a specialist located over 300 miles away from the family
- 1:50:45home and a hospital located in Connecticut as his treatments
- 1:50:50begin. The family soon realizes that
- 1:50:53the 8 hour daily round trips are unsustainable, not just for the
- 1:50:57family members taking Phillip, but more importantly to Phillip
- 1:51:02himself who is becoming weaker as a result of the cancer and
- 1:51:06the radiation. Wanting to do anything they can
- 1:51:10to lessen the burden and get their son closer to his doctors
- 1:51:14to give him a fighting chance, Allen and Carmen liquidate what
- 1:51:18is left of their assets. As Alan puts in a transfer to
- 1:51:21move to another site with his company and into the state of
- 1:51:25Connecticut. As Alan handles the children at
- 1:51:28home, Carmen heads to Connecticut to attempt to find a
- 1:51:32suitable place to live for her family.
- 1:51:34But with two adults and four children altogether, this isn't
- 1:51:38the easiest of task to accomplish given their budget.
- 1:51:42After dozens of appointments and dozens of refusals, the
- 1:51:46situation was becoming. Bleak.
- 1:51:49That wasn't until she happened to drive by another house as she
- 1:51:53contemplated what the future held.
- 1:51:55Carmen happened to drive by a large house with a four rent
- 1:51:59sign hanging in the front yard. Upon inquiring, she made her way
- 1:52:03inside to speak with the owner of the property, and although
- 1:52:06renovations were still taking place and it would be a short
- 1:52:10while before the home was ready to live in, she was allowed to
- 1:52:14take a tour. Almost immediately, she fell in
- 1:52:17love with the home. It's freshly laid hardwood
- 1:52:20flooring and inviting interiors seem to call out to her, and
- 1:52:24with four bedrooms, 2 upstairs and two downstairs, and plenty
- 1:52:29of room for everyone, it seemed like the perfect fit.
- 1:52:34And more importantly, it was just minutes away from the
- 1:52:37hospital which was the primary. Factor, of course.
- 1:52:41Fearing that the large size of the house would be far outside
- 1:52:44of their budget, Carmen decided to cut to the chase.
- 1:52:48And asked the property owner just how much the rent would be,
- 1:52:52and as if a gift from the universe itself, it just
- 1:52:55happened to fit their budget perfectly.
- 1:52:58After a handshake the first day, before too long the terms are
- 1:53:03inked and the family begins to move in.
- 1:53:06Finally, after all of these months of struggle and worry,
- 1:53:11they have now secured a fighting chance for some kind of normalcy
- 1:53:15for the entire family. And an even better chance for
- 1:53:18their son Phillip to beat his cancer.
- 1:53:21Several weeks later, as the children are staying with
- 1:53:24relatives, Carmen and Allen begin to move things into the
- 1:53:28house, just seeing the home for the first time.
- 1:53:31Allen agrees that his wife did a great job given the situation
- 1:53:35and that the house would be a good fit for the family.
- 1:53:38That was until the couple looked into the basement.
- 1:53:42The small room was now present that Carmen hadn't seen on her
- 1:53:45initial walkthrough, perhaps one that was being renovated at the
- 1:53:49time. As her and Alan opened the door
- 1:53:52and walked into it, they began to notice strange tools that
- 1:53:56they had never seen before, laid out on several tables, as well
- 1:54:01as the sink located in the back of the room as the snow falls
- 1:54:05outside and the whispers of the winter wind make themselves
- 1:54:09heard. The snidekkers unveil a hideous
- 1:54:12revelation tucked in the basement of their new rental
- 1:54:15home, A home that they've moved in in order to give their son a
- 1:54:19fighting chance against cancer appears to have previously been
- 1:54:23a Funeral Home 1, where the dead have been prepared for burial in
- 1:54:28an unbeknownst to anyone, some of the old tools and saws were
- 1:54:33still present now in the room as they come to this realization.
- 1:54:38Shocked and angry with herself, Carmen initially refuses to
- 1:54:42bring the children there, especially Phillip.
- 1:54:45But after being talked down by Allen, who told her to consider
- 1:54:49their situation, the fact that they had already signed an
- 1:54:52agreement that they had spent every last penny on Phillips
- 1:54:56treatments, the move and the rent that even if it was a
- 1:55:00Funeral Home, no one likely died there and Carmen finally
- 1:55:05relents. And agrees to continue with the
- 1:55:07move in process. The two vow to hide the morbid
- 1:55:11past of the home and its contents from their children.
- 1:55:16They contact the landlord, who removes the embalming and
- 1:55:19preparation equipment but leaves several tables and a deep freeze
- 1:55:23that might be useful to the family, and several weeks later
- 1:55:28the rest of the family moves in as Phillip and the other
- 1:55:31children wander. From room to room.
- 1:55:34Examining their new house. Carmen begins to mop the floors
- 1:55:38to prepare to bring in the furniture to complete their
- 1:55:41move. But as she fills the bucket with
- 1:55:44soap and hot water and begins to mop where the items will go, she
- 1:55:49experiences an omen of sorts. As she mops from side to side,
- 1:55:54the steamy and soapy water began to congeal and turn into a thick
- 1:55:59and dark red substance like that of dead blood.
- 1:56:03As the liquid smears all over the hardwood floor, within an
- 1:56:07instant as she blinks, things seem to be back to normal.
- 1:56:12Attributing the bizarre vision to intense stress and
- 1:56:14exhaustion, she tries to write the experience off and continues
- 1:56:19mopping. Meanwhile, Phillip has wandered
- 1:56:22into the basement stairwell and begins to descend the stairs,
- 1:56:27feeling an icy and cold presence overtake him the lower he gets
- 1:56:31into the basement. As his eyes scanned the room, he
- 1:56:35feels an ominous presence staring at him, when suddenly he
- 1:56:40hears a voice call out to him from a specific room and this
- 1:56:45voice knew his name. Scared and unnerved, he makes
- 1:56:50his way back upstairs and greets his mother in the kitchen.
- 1:56:54He tells her that they need to leave immediately because he
- 1:56:58doesn't feel like any of them are safe.
- 1:57:01Carmen initially wrote off the feelings of her son due to him
- 1:57:04having his illness, adjusting to a new environment, and believing
- 1:57:09that it was an inner voice, not a physical one, that he was
- 1:57:12hearing. But she would realize that she
- 1:57:15indeed was very, very wrong. As the days grow more difficult
- 1:57:21and long, the family began to turn to their faith for
- 1:57:24guidance, reaching out to the priest who had married the
- 1:57:27couple. Allen and Carmen have him pray,
- 1:57:30a prayer of healing over Philip, hoping to assist in his
- 1:57:33treatment, but despite their best efforts, he is only
- 1:57:37continuing to get worse. By this time, the entire family
- 1:57:42has moved into the former Funeral Home, including the
- 1:57:45other children, but no one has told the children that it was
- 1:57:48indeed a Funeral Home. Philip, unbeknownst to the rest
- 1:57:52of the family, had figured this out on his own.
- 1:57:56Carmen would eventually attribute his discovery to him
- 1:57:59being so close to death. At the time, she believed that
- 1:58:03the veil between life and death had become so thin for her boy
- 1:58:07that he could see what no one else could and know perhaps what
- 1:58:12others didn't. Working to provide as best as he
- 1:58:15could, Allen had long since gone back to work, leaving Carmen to
- 1:58:20run the strange and new house with their family and six son on
- 1:58:23her own. He would be home on the weekends
- 1:58:26until his transfer was finalized because despite the horrors of
- 1:58:30having a cancer ridden child, the bills unfortunately never
- 1:58:34stop. As the days progress, the
- 1:58:37strangeness within the home begins to reveal itself from the
- 1:58:41shadows. The youngest daughter of the
- 1:58:44Snyderkers is playing with her toys in her room as the wind
- 1:58:48whistles outside as she talks with the dolls and places them
- 1:58:52within their doll house. A figure grazes the background
- 1:58:57of her room. When the little girl looks up
- 1:58:59above her dollhouse, she sees the figure of a woman with pale
- 1:59:04skin and sunk in eyes screaming. She races to her mother as fast
- 1:59:10as possible. Carmen comforts the poor girl
- 1:59:14who is shaking. She grips her mother, wanting to
- 1:59:17comfort her. Carmen goes upstairs to try and
- 1:59:20dismiss her daughter's fears and despite her searching.
- 1:59:24Nothing seems out of the ordinary.
- 1:59:26Believing that Phillip and his brother were playing tricks on
- 1:59:29the poor child, Carmen angrily rushes to find and confront
- 1:59:34them. But despite her rage, the boys
- 1:59:37swear that they never told her the secret that Phillip had
- 1:59:40discovered, and that neither of them had played any tricks on
- 1:59:44her whatsoever. Bewildered, Carmen sets them
- 1:59:47straight and heads back to the kitchen to cook the family
- 1:59:51dinner. The only piece for her seems to
- 1:59:54come at night when the children are fast asleep in their beds
- 1:59:58with the crisp air holding an ever present moon above their
- 2:00:01home. Despite believing that all of
- 2:00:03her children were fast asleep and with the house being so
- 2:00:07calm, her boys in the basement room were not getting much sleep
- 2:00:11at all. The boys are often woken up by
- 2:00:14the sounds and then visuals of someone or something moving
- 2:00:20behind the closed door. At first they thought it was
- 2:00:23simply shadows, or their minds playing tricks on them when one
- 2:00:27or the other would be the only ones awake.
- 2:00:30But now that it was both of them, they were seeing the exact
- 2:00:34same thing and experiencing the same exact chill creeping up
- 2:00:39their spines. The two would then continue to
- 2:00:42confide in one another, as brothers often do about all the
- 2:00:46things they had experienced individually once the bizarre
- 2:00:50specter. Had dematerialized.
- 2:00:53The days grew longer and more stressful as time wore on.
- 2:00:57Phillip was knocking on death's door, and his lack of sleep was
- 2:01:01not helping. His treatment for the frigid
- 2:01:04nights brought the icy touch of death and the wandering
- 2:01:08apparitions of another world into theirs.
- 2:01:12Soon the boys can no longer take it.
- 2:01:15They approach Carmen to explain what they've been seeing.
- 2:01:19And that there's been a man and what they now call the lab room
- 2:01:22and their room in the basement. Carmen, as per usual, whether it
- 2:01:27was to cope with the mounting pressures and responsibilities
- 2:01:30of their daily lives, or to try and convince them to negate
- 2:01:34their fear, or both, Wrote off the boys as having nothing more
- 2:01:39than overactive imaginations, reminding Phillip that he was
- 2:01:42very sick and this could play a role in him seeing something
- 2:01:46that perhaps wasn't there. However, that would still not
- 2:01:50explain his brother experiencing the exact same thing at the
- 2:01:54exact same time. Another typical day in their new
- 2:01:58lives, Carmen begins cooking dinner for the family.
- 2:02:02Up until this point, she hasn't had an experience that she's
- 2:02:05recognized as anything truly paranormal that wasn't stress
- 2:02:10related, or something else that she could write off entirely.
- 2:02:14She had just set all the dishes out on the table for her family.
- 2:02:17And as she starts to make her way to the deep freeze to grab
- 2:02:20the protein she'd be cooking for the family's meal, she hears
- 2:02:24slight movement coming from the dining room.
- 2:02:26As she grabs and then sets the meat down in the kitchen.
- 2:02:29She goes to examine what the sound was.
- 2:02:32All of the dishes are gone without a trace, as if she never
- 2:02:37placed them down at all, feeling as if she was losing her mind.
- 2:02:42Carmen can't so easily dismiss this experience.
- 2:02:46Because she knows she set that table.
- 2:02:48Meanwhile, Phillips younger brother Bobby was down in their
- 2:02:52room. He knows something strange is
- 2:02:55happening in the house that they can't explain given the
- 2:02:58apparitions and the noises the two of them have heard and
- 2:03:02experienced together, along with whatever their younger.
- 2:03:05Sister had seen, but this experience seems more personal,
- 2:03:09he begins. To hear what first?
- 2:03:11Sounds like whispers coming from the lab room and sees the
- 2:03:14apparition of a man. Behind the closed window door,
- 2:03:19he can't make out any features other than a general outline and
- 2:03:22his size, but the closer he gets, the more audible the
- 2:03:27whispering becomes. And this man, this thing, slowly
- 2:03:32muttering the name Philip, feeling that sense of terror
- 2:03:37overtaken fight or flight, takes over the boy and he quickly runs
- 2:03:41upstairs where he bumps into his mother.
- 2:03:44Having just had her own experience, she's not sure what
- 2:03:48to say to him, so taking his hand, the two make their way to
- 2:03:52the basement and towards the lab room where the whispers have
- 2:03:56been coming from. After a tense couple seconds,
- 2:03:59Carmen opens the door, only to be met with silence.
- 2:04:05Although she believed in the spirit world, she up until this
- 2:04:09point did not believe that it could interact with the world of
- 2:04:12the living. But given what her kids have
- 2:04:15been telling her, and what she's just experienced that very
- 2:04:18night, she wasn't so sure anymore.
- 2:04:22She had to consider the prospect that her house may just be
- 2:04:26haunted. Alan would arrive.
- 2:04:28The following morning to spend the weekend with his family.
- 2:04:32At the same time, Winter Storm began to set in as he arrived
- 2:04:37after speaking with his wife. And knowing that Phillip has
- 2:04:40made the other children aware of the macabre past of the home, he
- 2:04:45finds it important to address the issue as a family, believing
- 2:04:49that the information could perhaps just be adding fuel to
- 2:04:52overactive imaginations. At the breakfast table, he does
- 2:04:56just that, finally addressing the family that they indeed were
- 2:05:00living in an old Funeral Home, but that there was no reason for
- 2:05:04the children to be scared, that there were no monsters lurking
- 2:05:08in the shadows. And no specters of otherworldly
- 2:05:11beings watching them. Although Phillip and his brother
- 2:05:15argue that they've seen and experienced the same things, and
- 2:05:19they have indeed been very real, they are once again dismissed.
- 2:05:24Alan would then pull Phillip aside to ask him that despite
- 2:05:28the entire situation with him being the oldest, if he could
- 2:05:32please set an example for the rest of the children and not
- 2:05:35scare them with ghost stories. Phillips cancer treatments
- 2:05:40continue day after day, slowly draining the remaining funds the
- 2:05:44family has left. Meanwhile, he continues to see
- 2:05:49and experience even more paranormal happenings within the
- 2:05:52home. His mother attributes this to
- 2:05:55his illness and the interactions between his body and medications
- 2:05:59he's been placed on, despite knowing that her other children
- 2:06:03and even herself have had their own experiences.
- 2:06:07Another bizarre development recently has been that most, if
- 2:06:11not all of the family's crucifixes that have been placed
- 2:06:15all throughout their home have started to go missing with no
- 2:06:19indication as to where they could have gone.
- 2:06:22The nightly disturbances have also become regular by this
- 2:06:26point, with Philip and his brother seeing the man in the
- 2:06:29lab room ever more frequently, as well as hearing and seeing
- 2:06:34other apparitions circling them. As they lay in their beds, this
- 2:06:39night is no different. The boys wake up, their parents
- 2:06:43screaming in terror that the man is back, but after sweeping the
- 2:06:48house and ensuring that everything is locked, that there
- 2:06:51was no way anyone could have possibly gotten in, Alan, being
- 2:06:55very wary of being woken up almost every night, forces the
- 2:06:58boys to go back to bed again, dismissing their experiences,
- 2:07:04tired of not being believed. The boys began to leave the
- 2:07:08lights on. In their room.
- 2:07:10And talk amongst themselves to comfort one another as they
- 2:07:13would slowly but surely begin to fall asleep.
- 2:07:16Convinced that Phillip was seeing things due to his
- 2:07:19medication and then influencing the younger children, his
- 2:07:23parents requested that he be examined for any possible
- 2:07:26interactions by his doctor, and after a series of tests, the
- 2:07:31doctor would conclude that nothing Phillip was on could be
- 2:07:34causing such things. The only other possible answer
- 2:07:38was a psychological problem. Alongside his cancer, Alan was
- 2:07:43now picking up every hour he possibly could, as well as any
- 2:07:47side work that presented itself to try and keep up with the
- 2:07:50mounting debt the family was being buried in.
- 2:07:53On any given day, A2 inch stack of bills either lay or
- 2:07:58termination notices could be found on the kitchen counter
- 2:08:02while sorting through them. He was shocked to find an
- 2:08:04electric bill almost twice its average.
- 2:08:08To him, the children sleeping with the lights on because of
- 2:08:11ghost stories was not only causing them to lose sleep, but
- 2:08:15now is costing the family money they simply didn't have.
- 2:08:19So to counteract this, and of course feeling as if he was
- 2:08:23justified in doing so, he goes to each one of their rooms and
- 2:08:27removes all of their light bulbs.
- 2:08:29Except. For one at night, however.
- 2:08:32The lights that used to make them feel protected and bring
- 2:08:36them relief would soon contribute to a new supernatural
- 2:08:40horror. Sleeping in their room in the
- 2:08:43basement, the snide Aker boys are suddenly woken up by the
- 2:08:47flashing of their overhead lights.
- 2:08:50Glancing to find the source, they see their little sister
- 2:08:54flicking the lights on and off, and despite there being no light
- 2:08:57bulbs in their sockets, they are still flashing on and off.
- 2:09:02Running towards her, the youngest brother chases her up
- 2:09:05the stairs, but she's just too quick for him to catch her.
- 2:09:10Instead, he runs into his parents when he exits the
- 2:09:13basement door. But strangely, his mother
- 2:09:16explains to him that she's been asleep in her room for hours now
- 2:09:21and she would know because she had tucked her in and had been
- 2:09:24near the basement ever since. Not.
- 2:09:27Believing her at. First, he rushes upstairs.
- 2:09:31To soon find her fast asleep in her bed.
- 2:09:34He is now even more freaked out because whatever this thing was
- 2:09:38could take the form of a family member.
- 2:09:41Meanwhile, as his brother comes to terms with this hideous
- 2:09:45revelation, a voice begins to call to Philip once again.
- 2:09:49From the lab room. Waking him up, getting sick of
- 2:09:54living in fear, Philip finally decides to confront whoever.
- 2:09:59Or whatever has been calling out to him and approaches the room.
- 2:10:03Upon opening the door and stepping inside, he has met face
- 2:10:07to face with the entity that has been calling his name.
- 2:10:12The apparition appeared to him as a man with dark red, almost
- 2:10:17blood filled eyes began to whisper to him things about the
- 2:10:21homes past after this freezing winter's night.
- 2:10:26Philip began to undergo a radical change in personality.
- 2:10:30He began to pull away and isolate himself from the rest of
- 2:10:34the family, insisting that he be left alone in the basement and
- 2:10:38that his brother Bobby move upstairs, making Bobby feel
- 2:10:42alienated from their once close and confiding relationship.
- 2:10:48Despite these personality changes, a miracle seemed to
- 2:10:52take place, one that the family had been praying for.
- 2:10:56Since the very beginning of their struggle, after months of
- 2:10:59daily treatments, Phillips Blood labs finally came back normal.
- 2:11:04His cancer was in remission, but surprisingly, he almost doesn't
- 2:11:10seem to. Care at all?
- 2:11:12Later that evening, as the family prepares to celebrate the
- 2:11:15good news, they also welcome a guest for the first time since
- 2:11:19they had moved, their niece, Teresa, would be temporarily
- 2:11:22living with them. And it just arrived from New
- 2:11:25York. Her parents had been separated
- 2:11:28and undergoing a messy divorce, so to help her make the best of
- 2:11:32the situation, they've allowed her to stay with them.
- 2:11:35Not having seen the family in quite some time, Teresa begins
- 2:11:39to get reacclimated with them, but soon notices that Phillip,
- 2:11:44who she had previously been very close to, was missing from the
- 2:11:47party. She would eventually find him in
- 2:11:50the basement. And also noticed that something
- 2:11:53was very different about him. He seemed darker, more angry,
- 2:11:58and not at all like the boy that she used to know.
- 2:12:01He would eventually confide in her all the paranormal activity
- 2:12:05he and the others had experienced in the house it's
- 2:12:08past and that his parents did not believe them.
- 2:12:12This made him feel extremely isolated and alone, and that the
- 2:12:17activity had not simply gone away but had continued to get
- 2:12:21worse. Each and every night his
- 2:12:24experiences as he explained them to Teresa ranged from scratching
- 2:12:28on his door and inside his walls to his name being called, to
- 2:12:34seeing the apparitions of figures surrounding him,
- 2:12:37hearing, whispering, and also seeing and hearing a man in the
- 2:12:42suit with blood red eyes call out to him that this man would
- 2:12:47also visit his bedside every single night.
- 2:12:50And tell him things that his parents had said about him.
- 2:12:54Negative and terrible things. He would then encourage Philip
- 2:12:58to take action and to hurt his own family.
- 2:13:02Shortly into her stay, Teresa began to observe that the hatred
- 2:13:06and malice that was dwelling within Philip that seemed to
- 2:13:09make itself a part of the family's daily routine.
- 2:13:13Fights and screaming matches soon became a daily occurrence,
- 2:13:18especially between Philip and Allen.
- 2:13:20With Alan seeming to resent Philip for the family's
- 2:13:23financial situation and for Philip feeling isolated and not
- 2:13:28being believed about what he was experiencing.
- 2:13:32According to Philip's diary, every night when he was trying
- 2:13:35to sleep, this creature, this demon, would visit him and push
- 2:13:40him harder and harder to commit unspeakable things.
- 2:13:46It got to the point to where Philip wouldn't even leave his
- 2:13:49room. He wouldn't argue back against
- 2:13:51this entity and day after day, night after night, it pushed for
- 2:13:56him to hurt his family. Philip will continue to confide
- 2:14:00in Teresa that alongside this he began to see other people within
- 2:14:05the basement who were dead and buried as if they were trapped
- 2:14:09there by the man in the suit with the blood red eyes.
- 2:14:13And this entity would continue to threaten to do things to
- 2:14:16Philip if he did not listen. And do as he was told while
- 2:14:21explaining these newer developments to her.
- 2:14:24Without warning, he suddenly attacked her, grabbing her arm,
- 2:14:29trying to harm. Her.
- 2:14:31Breaking free and rushing up the stairs and into the arms of her
- 2:14:34Uncle Allen, she watched Phillip essentially be exiled back into
- 2:14:39the basement, and with that, their relationship began to
- 2:14:42disintegrate, upset at not only what had happened between her
- 2:14:46and Phillip. That the strange behavior and
- 2:14:49dysfunction that was taking place within the house, Teresa
- 2:14:53wept in her bed. She would eventually be gifted A
- 2:14:56rosary by Carmen who believed that it would help comfort her,
- 2:15:00and she wore this to bed that night as a necklace of sorts.
- 2:15:04However, she would quickly discover that instead of
- 2:15:07comfort, this holy object made her a target instead, fast
- 2:15:12asleep. Teresa was suddenly woken up by
- 2:15:16the sensation of her blankets being pulled from her body.
- 2:15:20She opened her eyes to find Phillip staring at her with a
- 2:15:24crooked smile just before he attacked her, striking her
- 2:15:28several times in the face. Her screams thankfully quickly
- 2:15:32warrant to Carmen and Allen, who subdued Phillip immediately.
- 2:15:37Phillip, after this unpredictable series of
- 2:15:39incidents, was then removed from the house due to his violence.
- 2:15:44Upon the arrival of law enforcement and medical
- 2:15:46personnel, he seemed to have no recollection of what had taken
- 2:15:50place and was screaming and crying as he was being forcibly
- 2:15:54removed from the home and sent away for a mental evaluation.
- 2:15:59Allen and Carmen, after securing the rest of the children in the
- 2:16:02house, followed the ambulance to the hospital to sign the
- 2:16:06necessary paperwork to have Phillip committed for the
- 2:16:10evaluation. But just before he was led into
- 2:16:13the hospital, he issued an ominous warning to the both of
- 2:16:16them. He said.
- 2:16:18Mark my words, now that I'm out of the house, it'll be after you
- 2:16:23and it will get worse. Shattered by what had taken
- 2:16:27place, the snidecker's somber drive home turned into a long
- 2:16:31one. Given the distance and the
- 2:16:34weather that they were braving by the time they arrived back
- 2:16:37home, it's time for Alan to head to work.
- 2:16:40After dropping off Carmen, he departs for the day, wanting to
- 2:16:44sleep, but too stressed too. Carmen sits on the edge of her
- 2:16:48bed, crying and contemplating what her son had said.
- 2:16:53What if this all truly was real? What would they even do?
- 2:16:57Where does one begin to fight something they can't see?
- 2:17:01She decides to head down into the basement to Phillips Room to
- 2:17:05see if she can experience anything whatsoever.
- 2:17:09After several minutes, despite not seeing anything, she does
- 2:17:13begin to feel a massive drop in temperature, so low to the point
- 2:17:18to where she can see her breath. She also soon begins to shake
- 2:17:21with fear. She can't describe fighting
- 2:17:25these feelings. She issues a challenge to
- 2:17:27whatever could be lurking there, to show itself, to prove that it
- 2:17:32was indeed real, that it truly did exist, but despite her
- 2:17:37challenge. And waiting half an hour, she
- 2:17:40sees nothing, so she heads back upstairs to her room to take a
- 2:17:45shower to try and relax herself enough to sleep.
- 2:17:49Meanwhile, Alan had been driving in the dark, heading to work for
- 2:17:52the day. During his drive, he was worried
- 2:17:55about his son, his family, and leaving them behind for the day
- 2:18:00in such a raw emotional state. But he would have no way of
- 2:18:04knowing that these weren't the only problems.
- 2:18:06He had to worry about. After his long drive, he finally
- 2:18:11arrives at work for the day and begins.
- 2:18:14He hopes to be distracted from his lack of sleep and family
- 2:18:18problems. As Carmen runs her shower and
- 2:18:22the rest of the children sleep, a horrific presence begins to
- 2:18:26manifest within the house. As she's washing herself, the
- 2:18:31shower curtain suddenly covers Carmen's face, catching her off
- 2:18:35guard. Out of breath, it begins to
- 2:18:39smother her at the same time Teresa startled awake.
- 2:18:44She's being strangled by the rosary she's wearing.
- 2:18:47She screams, pulling out her neck, and eventually frees
- 2:18:52herself from a stranglehold. She then runs towards the
- 2:18:55muffled screams of her aunt coming from her bedroom,
- 2:18:59seemingly having no other choice after seeing her being strangled
- 2:19:02by the shower curtain. She pulls it off of.
- 2:19:04Her as fast. And as hard as she possibly can.
- 2:19:08The two then share a moment of sheer terror and trauma, both
- 2:19:12having experienced things that they can't explain.
- 2:19:16However, I've announced to the two of them at home.
- 2:19:19Alan is about to experience an attack of his own while working
- 2:19:23at his job site. He begins to hear his truck turn
- 2:19:26over despite his keys being in his pocket, glancing out to
- 2:19:31figure out just what this could be.
- 2:19:33He watches his truck begin to move towards his small work
- 2:19:36building and then, as if someone had their foot on the gas, it
- 2:19:41began to accelerate to a high rate of speed and before he
- 2:19:45could run out of the way, the truck smashes directly into the
- 2:19:48building and straight towards where he was standing.
- 2:19:52Back at the house, Carmen and Teresa are still in shock when
- 2:19:56suddenly the phone rings. However there is nothing but a
- 2:20:01muffled laugh coming through. From the other side, feeling a
- 2:20:05burning sensation on her ear, Carmen immediately drops the
- 2:20:09phone to find that it's partially melted.
- 2:20:13Starting to scream, she finds herself frozen as she glances
- 2:20:17towards the ceiling after she sees something out of the
- 2:20:20corner. Of her eye.
- 2:20:22Teresa then sees it as well, and begins to scream.
- 2:20:27A black cloud of some kind now floated above them.
- 2:20:30The two are absolutely mortified by the sudden and horrendous
- 2:20:34manifestations of supernatural evil that are taking place and
- 2:20:39realize that Phillip was right. This force, this demon, has
- 2:20:44taken over the entire house, running out of the room and
- 2:20:48frantically into another. They rushed to gather the rest
- 2:20:52of the children, but with a snowstorm raging outside and a
- 2:20:56demonic storm raging inside. They seemingly have no escape.
- 2:21:01Carmen is unsure of what to do. She then receives another phone
- 2:21:05call, this time picking up another landline in the home.
- 2:21:09It's Allen on the other end. He explains just what had taken
- 2:21:12place and that he was waiting for the authorities to arrive.
- 2:21:17Even more shocked and scared now that this entity has now
- 2:21:20attacked all members of the family and has left the home and
- 2:21:24attacked Allen as well. Since all the events seem to
- 2:21:27take place roughly during the same time frame, she's convinced
- 2:21:31that the demon will follow them wherever they go to try and
- 2:21:34escape it. So although it is the middle of
- 2:21:37the morning during a winter storm, she makes a phone call to
- 2:21:40the only person who she thinks can help her in this desperate
- 2:21:44situation. She calls the priest who had
- 2:21:47married her and Allen and had blessed Philip before his cancer
- 2:21:50was in remission, thankfully for their sake.
- 2:21:54The father picked up on the other end and promised to head
- 2:21:58to the home as soon as possible. Given the road conditions, it
- 2:22:02takes him several hours to arrive, but thankfully he does.
- 2:22:08First things first. The father wanted to speak with
- 2:22:11Carmen and figure out just what exactly was taking place, and
- 2:22:15after discussing anything and everything, they can think with
- 2:22:18him, hoping for an answer to fix their situation.
- 2:22:22Albeit it's never that easy. The father's response leaves
- 2:22:26them stunned. He tells them that he does
- 2:22:29believe them, but if that they simply ignore the presence, what
- 2:22:34it's been doing, it'll go away. This is the first time her faith
- 2:22:39has failed Carmen. She's bewildered by his answer.
- 2:22:43How can you just ignore something that's tried to take
- 2:22:46your life, your family members lives this very day?
- 2:22:51Alongside everything else that has been building up to this
- 2:22:54point, in her opinion, she couldn't.
- 2:22:58So once he left, she rushed to seek other, less conventional
- 2:23:03options to find the answers that she desperately needed.
- 2:23:07While digging through a phone book and multiple newspapers to
- 2:23:11try and find anything she could, she stumbled across an article
- 2:23:15about a husband and wife team of socalled demonologists.
- 2:23:19Were set to give a lecture at a nearby university.
- 2:23:22After several additional phone calls, she makes contact with
- 2:23:26Lorraine Warren, which, after discussing the prospect of the
- 2:23:29visit with her husband Ed, agreed to come and visit Carmen
- 2:23:33that day to evaluate her situation.
- 2:23:36After their arrival, in a brief interview, Lorraine starts to
- 2:23:40survey the house using her gift of discernment, the supposed
- 2:23:44extra sense that allows a person to discover the true nature of
- 2:23:48the situation. A person's character, or in this
- 2:23:51case, a spirit or haunting. Whether it was something good
- 2:23:55and godly or something grotesque and not of God, she's almost
- 2:24:01immediately drawn to the basement.
- 2:24:03With no knowledge of the home prior.
- 2:24:06She makes her way towards the notorious lab room and soon
- 2:24:10begins to sense a plethora of beings.
- 2:24:13A sense of horrible depression and doom began to fill her
- 2:24:17entire soul. Among the many human spirits she
- 2:24:20felt, she felt something else, something sinister and
- 2:24:26sickening. There was a demonic force
- 2:24:29dwelling within the basement. She would later describe the
- 2:24:33feeling as if there was a doorway to Hell itself located
- 2:24:37in that room. To remove any such spirits
- 2:24:40within the house, the Warrens informed Carmen that the
- 2:24:43Catholic Church would have to authorize an exorcism.
- 2:24:46And send the appropriate personnel to make this happen, a
- 2:24:50process that could take weeks or even months.
- 2:24:53To try and expedite the process, the warrants contact their lead
- 2:24:57researcher, a man named John Zafis, to come in and document
- 2:25:02anything and everything that could be found so that a proper
- 2:25:06report could be submitted to the church.
- 2:25:08John, along with his crew, temporarily move into the home
- 2:25:12to try and document anything that they can find.
- 2:25:15That'll help prove beyond a reasonable doubt that an
- 2:25:18exorcism is indeed needed to be performed to help this family.
- 2:25:22During their time there, they relied on video, audio and
- 2:25:26photographic evidence to document their findings at the
- 2:25:31Warren's advice, so that the demon could not isolate any one
- 2:25:34person in the family. The entire family moves their
- 2:25:37beds into the living room to sleep together at night and
- 2:25:41protect one another. Thankfully.
- 2:25:44But the researchers also temporarily living there.
- 2:25:47At any one given point in time, there was always an additional
- 2:25:50person with a member of the family.
- 2:25:53However, with Phillip gone, the entity begins to pursue the next
- 2:25:57most vulnerable person, having suffered intense stress in the
- 2:26:01entire situation given that her son was in the side.
- 2:26:05Ward. Her family dynamic.
- 2:26:07Was in tatters, and the bills were forever continuing to pile
- 2:26:11up that person. Was Carmen.
- 2:26:15Carmen was also stricken with an overwhelming sense of guilt for
- 2:26:18not believing any of her children, especially Phillip,
- 2:26:22about what they had experienced during the entire ordeal.
- 2:26:26And it seems like perhaps the entity exploited this within her
- 2:26:30for all that it was worth. As the family discussed
- 2:26:33potential findings with the Warrens as well as their
- 2:26:35researchers around their fireplace in the living room,
- 2:26:39Carmen was suddenly flung backwards.
- 2:26:42As everyone gathered around her, their faces switched from those
- 2:26:46of concern to horror as her throat began to bulge and swell,
- 2:26:52and her face began to contort and twist.
- 2:26:57She would later describe what she felt while experiencing
- 2:27:00this, she said. I felt as if I was in a dark
- 2:27:03hole like a well, surrounded by black figures who I couldn't
- 2:27:08make out their features. I felt pure despair.
- 2:27:11And hopelessness to the point where if I stopped breathing, I
- 2:27:16knew I deserved to. Rushing to her aid but not being
- 2:27:19qualified to perform an exorcism themselves, the demonologists
- 2:27:24and their crew asked for the rest of the family to bring
- 2:27:27anything sacred to her to be placed upon her.
- 2:27:30Teresa rushes to find the rosary that she was gifted by her hand.
- 2:27:34The same 1 Carmen believed, would protect her.
- 2:27:36This was placed upon her in an effort to combat whatever was
- 2:27:40attacking her. After hours of praying and
- 2:27:42pleading, the group's prayers, along with the rosary placement
- 2:27:46seemed to work, at least temporarily breaking whatever
- 2:27:50spell Carmen was under as she came back to waking life.
- 2:27:54She had no idea how long she'd been out of it and the rain.
- 2:27:58Warren told her that she had been under attack for the last 8
- 2:28:01hours, as they had. Prayed over her.
- 2:28:04The experience seemed to last mere minutes to Carmen.
- 2:28:08Yet they were the longest minutes she had ever
- 2:28:10experienced. It took several more weeks, but
- 2:28:14eventually the researchers alongside the Warrens were able
- 2:28:18to attain enough evidence and their view to provide the
- 2:28:21church. But they too, just as the family
- 2:28:24by this point were beyond worn down.
- 2:28:27At night they slept on mattresses alongside the family
- 2:28:31altogether. In the living room around the
- 2:28:33fireplace, their mattresses would breathe.
- 2:28:37An alternating breath to their own not only waking and scaring
- 2:28:42them, but behaving as if they themselves were living,
- 2:28:46breathing creatures being laid on.
- 2:28:49Although they had researched and dealt with dozens if not
- 2:28:52hundreds of paranormal cases, they believed what they
- 2:28:55experienced in the Snydecker home in Connecticut was by far
- 2:28:59the strongest demonic presence they had ever come into contact
- 2:29:03with, close to what was supposed to be the final night.
- 2:29:07Had researcher John Zaffis made the mistake of leaving the
- 2:29:11safety of the living room when he was suddenly woke up out of a
- 2:29:14sound sleep? He went and sat in the kitchen,
- 2:29:17unable to go back to sleep. Within minutes he felt as if he
- 2:29:22had been placed in a freezer. All the warmth quickly left his
- 2:29:26body and he began to see his own breath hang in the air.
- 2:29:30Having experienced this before, he knew he was being targeted as
- 2:29:35fear began to overtake him. He began to call out to anyone
- 2:29:39and everyone that was sleeping just feet away in the living
- 2:29:42room, but was met with no response.
- 2:29:45He rushed to the living room where he began to see the
- 2:29:47mattresses breathing, but everyone who laid upon them was
- 2:29:51completely unresponsive. He then hears the basement door
- 2:29:55creak open as he slowly walks to where he can see the entrance to
- 2:30:00the basement. He sees a man wearing a suit
- 2:30:05with a contorted face. In Blood Red Eyes, the
- 2:30:10experience terrifies John so much to the point where he runs
- 2:30:14into the living room shaking his crew awake and telling them that
- 2:30:18he has to get out. Having only spoken about the
- 2:30:21situation a handful of times since then, he would go on to
- 2:30:25say I have never, in the decades upon decades of investigating
- 2:30:30the paranormal experience something to that degree of evil
- 2:30:34since that night. And I pray I never do again.
- 2:30:38Days after John vacates the home, the Warrens finally
- 2:30:42managed to convince the Connecticut diocese to grant the
- 2:30:45family a priest to determine if an exorcism would be granted.
- 2:30:50Exorcism in the Catholic faith, especially these days, and Even
- 2:30:55so in the 20th century, are only conducted in absolute secrecy
- 2:30:59and are extremely rare. To be granted, evil must be
- 2:31:03proven to be present. Beyond a reasonable doubt
- 2:31:06through a variety of methods and rarer still is performing an
- 2:31:11exorcism on a building or place rather than a person, A priest
- 2:31:16by the name of Father Frank soon arrives to execute the church's
- 2:31:20orders and conduct an investigation on their behalf.
- 2:31:24Having viewed the evidence given to the church by the Warrens, he
- 2:31:28also listens to the snide actors about their experiences and
- 2:31:31tours the home. By the end of the interview, the
- 2:31:35family cannot tell if the father will be for or against advising
- 2:31:39the Church to grant them what they so desperately believed
- 2:31:42they needed. Several agonizing weeks would go
- 2:31:45by until word was received from the church, and to the family's
- 2:31:49relief, they decided to grant them an exorcism.
- 2:31:53Another priest by the name of Father Richard was sent to
- 2:31:57conduct the ritual upon arriving during an exceptionally bad
- 2:32:01snowstorm. Father Richard is almost
- 2:32:04immediately drawn to the basement.
- 2:32:06As he descends the steps. With Carmen behind him, he turns
- 2:32:10to her. His stone face, which has been
- 2:32:12relatively void of emotion, turns into a grimace, almost as
- 2:32:17if he sensed that there was something truly evil lurking
- 2:32:21within the shadows. Within seconds, he asked to step
- 2:32:25into the lab room and to close the doors behind him so that he
- 2:32:30may begin. As he starts to flick droplets
- 2:32:33of holy water into the space, the energy in the house seems to
- 2:32:38become darker and the air heavier.
- 2:32:42Despite feeling a malevolent presence surrounding him, Father
- 2:32:46Richard continued with the ritual.
- 2:32:48He went from room to room conducting the exorcism and
- 2:32:52exalting God's blessings, until finally he was in the living
- 2:32:57room in the presence of the Snydaker family.
- 2:33:00As well as Ed and Lorraine Warren, now several hours in as
- 2:33:05he was making his way towards the rituals conclusion, the
- 2:33:08demonic presence that had plagued the family all of these
- 2:33:11days since they had first arrived at the beginning of this
- 2:33:15harsh winter in Connecticut refused to be ignored and was
- 2:33:19ready for a fight. Seen by everyone present, all
- 2:33:24objects in the room that weren't nailed down or being sat in
- 2:33:28began to shake. And be thrown.
- 2:33:32Books, knickknacks, statues, and ornaments shattered as the snow
- 2:33:38and ice slapped the windows outside of the house.
- 2:33:41The more they prayed, the more they seemed to provoke the
- 2:33:44entity, and the more intense the activity became amidst the
- 2:33:50turmoil, And again witnessed by everyone, Teresa's lifted into
- 2:33:54the air by what she would later describe as massive, unseen
- 2:33:59hands. And is choked.
- 2:34:02It seems as if the entity is attempting to shock and break
- 2:34:06the prayers of those present, but Father Richard refuses to
- 2:34:10give in. Then within the blink of an eye,
- 2:34:13it was if whatever had been stocking the walls inside of the
- 2:34:17Snydecker home was gone, and despite the mess that now
- 2:34:22surrounded them, they could not be more relieved or thankful for
- 2:34:26their newfound freedom. Several days after the exorcism,
- 2:34:31they started the process of selling the house, not only to
- 2:34:34try and put their past experiences behind them to move
- 2:34:37forward, but to also not take a chance of the door that they
- 2:34:42believe they closed with the help of their faith being
- 2:34:45reopened and reigniting their own personal paranormal hell.
- 2:34:51Philip would be released from the mental hospital about a
- 2:34:54month later, after the exorcism had transpired.
- 2:34:58He not only seemed to be in stable condition, but appeared
- 2:35:01much healthier and was truly happy to see his family again.
- 2:35:05His cancer, thankfully, would never return.
- 2:35:09What happened in the Snydecker home is open to interpretation.
- 2:35:13Those who believe them believe the exorcism to be a resounding
- 2:35:17success, while those who don't believe see it as some kind of
- 2:35:21attention grabbing hoax. The warns themselves back then
- 2:35:25and even now, long after their own deaths.
- 2:35:28Continue to be polarizing figures, with some believing
- 2:35:31them to be legitimate demonologists and paranormal
- 2:35:34experts, with others believing that they were charlatans,
- 2:35:39nothing more than profiteers of people's fears, as stated in the
- 2:35:43beginning. I'm not here to convince you one
- 2:35:46way or the other. My job is to provide as many
- 2:35:49details as I can of what happened with the particular
- 2:35:52case, and the rest is up for you to decide.
- 2:35:56Some additional details I would like to add however, are these.
- 2:36:00After investigating the home, the warns did launch a large
- 2:36:04media campaign promoting the home is majorly possessed.
- 2:36:08Whether this was for good or bad intentions, I can't say because
- 2:36:12I simply don't know. Phillip, unfortunately would
- 2:36:16later develop a drug habit and would also later be diagnosed
- 2:36:19with schizophrenia, whether this was a result of drug use or
- 2:36:23something that was there all along.
- 2:36:25You'll never know, but it did not appear to be his condition
- 2:36:29prior or even after his stent in the mental hospital.
- 2:36:33The story would go on to inspire a dramatized documentary with
- 2:36:37altered names of the family and with hidden interviews of the
- 2:36:40family in 2002, known as A Haunting in Connecticut.
- 2:36:44It would then again be popularized in 2009 when the
- 2:36:48horror film The Haunting in Connecticut was released.
- 2:36:52Upon moving out in 1987, the Snydekkers did not experience
- 2:36:56any other paranormal activity in their lives, and subsequent
- 2:36:59owners of the home say they haven't experienced any activity
- 2:37:03either. This is perhaps due to the
- 2:37:05successful exorcism of the home, or the demons simply existing
- 2:37:10within the minds of those involved.
- 2:37:13Again, the interpretation is up to you.
- 2:37:17The part of me still wonders. Could hell still be locked away
- 2:37:21within the basement of that house, watching, lurking, and
- 2:37:25waiting for the right person to stumble upon its locked door and
- 2:37:29to pry it open again? Could the blood red eyes of the
- 2:37:32demonic man in the suit still be lusting for more souls?
- 2:37:37If so, this is 1. Door I pray, stays locked for
- 2:37:42good if the walls of certain homes could speak.
- 2:37:49Some of the stories they would tell would more than likely
- 2:37:52shock and amaze us, or perhaps repulse and terrify us instead.
- 2:37:59This is one such story that if a house could tell its own tale,
- 2:38:04it would certainly be one we would never forget.
- 2:38:07A family moves to the country in search of peace, but those
- 2:38:11dreams are soon shattered by supernatural terror.
- 2:38:16Something evil lurks within the woods outside of their home, and
- 2:38:20this evil begins to stalk and wreak havoc upon everyone that
- 2:38:24dwells within the home. Can they save themselves before
- 2:38:29it's too late? This is the untold story of the
- 2:38:32haunted Hinsdale House, also known as the Dandy House, and
- 2:38:37the entities that infested it. Hinsdale, NY A small town with a
- 2:38:49rustic and rural charm, tuck deep into the countryside and
- 2:38:54far away from the crime, concrete and smog of New York
- 2:38:59City. Instead of gazing at
- 2:39:01skyscrapers, they would rather gaze at the surrounding
- 2:39:04mountains covered in dense foliage.
- 2:39:08But these mountains and their surrounding woods harbor many
- 2:39:11secrets and have many stories to tell.
- 2:39:16This is just one of them, the years 1970 and the Dandy family
- 2:39:22is in pursuit of their American Dream.
- 2:39:26After years of vacationing to Hinsdale and the surrounding
- 2:39:29areas to catch a break from their fastpaced life in Buffalo,
- 2:39:34they finally reached a point where they can turn their
- 2:39:37vacation. Into their daily life, seeking
- 2:39:41their own rural paradise, they come across a listing for a home
- 2:39:45that seems idyllic for their family and its needs.
- 2:39:49Clara Dandy, the mother of the family, believed that they all
- 2:39:53got along so much better in the country, like it had some form
- 2:39:57of redemption qualities about it that seemed to rejuvenate their
- 2:40:01spirits and their relationships as they wind their way through
- 2:40:06the countryside. They lay eyes on the home for
- 2:40:09the first time. They are not only taken aback by
- 2:40:13the beauty and the sheer size of the house, but that it's sat
- 2:40:17upon 8 acres of land surrounded by dents, breathtaking woods.
- 2:40:22Clara would describe her feelings about first seeing the
- 2:40:25house as being overcome with a deep sense of peace.
- 2:40:30It's like I'd finally come home after years of being elsewhere.
- 2:40:34And the air. The air was like breathing
- 2:40:36champagne. It was wonderful.
- 2:40:39The home is over 100 years old and still had most of the
- 2:40:43original and ornate woodwork intact.
- 2:40:46It just seemed to emanate charm and elegance as the children
- 2:40:51explored the nearby woods. Mr. and Missus Dandy continued
- 2:40:56their tour, but when they were being shown the storage space
- 2:41:00underneath the stairs, the door was initially stuck but after
- 2:41:04some elbow grease from Mr. Dandy.
- 2:41:07They were finally able to get it open.
- 2:41:10It revealed A dusty space of sorts with a fireplace.
- 2:41:15The one that didn't seem to fit the feeling of the house at all.
- 2:41:18Clara would describe her feelings towards the space like
- 2:41:21this. I wasn't sure why, but I felt
- 2:41:25very uneasy when we opened up the storage space.
- 2:41:29I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was dark and desolate,
- 2:41:34not at all like the rest. Of the house.
- 2:41:37But she quickly would dismiss these feelings, attributing the
- 2:41:40creepy factor to her city upbringing and the fact that
- 2:41:44they didn't have storage rooms like that where she was from.
- 2:41:48After closing the space and continuing to evaluate their
- 2:41:51opportunity, the feelings of peace would return and the
- 2:41:55Dandies decide that they can't resist the charm of this rustic
- 2:42:00100 year old home, so they decide to purchase it.
- 2:42:04Once things are squared away several months later, they move
- 2:42:08in to start their new rural existence on Movein Day.
- 2:42:13Claire's brother decided to lend a helping hand and had begun to
- 2:42:16move things in hours before the family was able to arrive When
- 2:42:21loading in a box of belongings, as he opened the door, he was
- 2:42:26greeted by a flurry of insects. Both bees and flies pelted him
- 2:42:31in his face. Rushing past.
- 2:42:33Them. And then, unloading the box onto
- 2:42:35the floor in the main room, he was startled to see hundreds of
- 2:42:39dead bees scattered all over the floor, and even more startled to
- 2:42:45see hundreds still alive and coating the windows.
- 2:42:49It was still cold during this time of year, and although he
- 2:42:53too wasn't from the country, he found it rather odd that there
- 2:42:57would be any kind of infestation at this time when his sister and
- 2:43:01her family finally arrive. He greets her with the news and
- 2:43:06in order to continue with the move in, they have to call an
- 2:43:09exterminator. Upon his arrival, he too
- 2:43:12confirms the oddity of the situation.
- 2:43:16He said that he had never seen so many bees and flies in one
- 2:43:19spot in a home and given this time of year, it was not normal
- 2:43:24for them to swarm or infest anything during this time.
- 2:43:28It takes some time, but after he finishes clearing them out.
- 2:43:32The family is finally able to get moved in.
- 2:43:35As time progresses, things seem to fit the dreams they had for
- 2:43:40moving there in the 1st place. The family finally seems at
- 2:43:43peace. They were getting along better
- 2:43:46and enjoying each other's company, a far departure from
- 2:43:50their city. Life in Buffalo.
- 2:43:52But as the old adage goes, if it seems too good to be true, it
- 2:43:57is. A few weeks into living and what
- 2:44:01they believed was going to be their rural paradise, their son
- 2:44:05Mike has met and made friends with a nearby neighbor.
- 2:44:09Together, they begin to explore the woods surrounding the dandy
- 2:44:12property. As the two navigate the forest,
- 2:44:16they're startled when they hear the crunching of leaves directly
- 2:44:20in front of them, stopping frozen in their tracks and
- 2:44:24fearing that it could be a bear. They take refuge behind a large
- 2:44:28tree and sneak glimpses from rounded sides to figure out just
- 2:44:33what it could be. To their shock, they spot a boy
- 2:44:37not much older than them carrying a rifle and walking in
- 2:44:41the path ahead, yelling at the boy that this is private
- 2:44:45property and wanting to know what he was doing.
- 2:44:48There they run. Towards him and try to.
- 2:44:51Catch up to him, they again freeze in their tracks.
- 2:44:55When they noticed that not only is the boy transparent the
- 2:44:58closer they get, but half of his head is missing.
- 2:45:03As the figure continues to walk and taking deep breaths, they
- 2:45:08slowly continue to follow him. The three approach a small lake.
- 2:45:13Within the blink of an eye, the boy vanishes.
- 2:45:18Mike and his friend are at a loss for words and have no
- 2:45:21explanation for what they saw. They quickly rush back to the
- 2:45:25dandy house as fast as they can to tell anyone who will listen
- 2:45:30to them. They soon make contact with
- 2:45:32Clara and explain to her what took place, but she's quick to
- 2:45:36dismiss their experience as nothing more than overactive
- 2:45:40imaginations. Another several weeks passed by,
- 2:45:45and Clara has all but forgotten about what her son had told her.
- 2:45:49She's now walking the family dog, Madison, in the woods.
- 2:45:53Some fresh air. And exercise.
- 2:45:56As they get deeper into the forest, Clara starts to hear
- 2:46:00what can only be described as chanting.
- 2:46:04As she stops to listen, it sounds eerie and disembodied, as
- 2:46:09if the sound is all around her, but has no true origin.
- 2:46:15It's at this time that Madison begins growling and barking.
- 2:46:21The longer she seems to focus on the chanting, the louder it
- 2:46:25seems to become. Madison, by this point, is
- 2:46:28losing her mind and breaks free from a distracted Clara and
- 2:46:33bolts in the direction of their home.
- 2:46:35Clara chases her down and she finally stops running when she
- 2:46:39makes it to the front door of their estate.
- 2:46:42After taking a moment to collect herself, Clara then calls her
- 2:46:46husband, who like she was to her son.
- 2:46:50Is quick to dismiss her feelings, thinking that she just
- 2:46:53had to adjust to rural life and wasn't used to it being so
- 2:46:57different from their life in the city.
- 2:47:00Frustrated and worried now about what?
- 2:47:02The chanting. Could have been.
- 2:47:04Clara talks with her son about her experience while she
- 2:47:07prepares dinner for the family. Mike thinks that it could have
- 2:47:11been some campers at a nearby campground, not too far from
- 2:47:15where their property line ends. That could have been the cause
- 2:47:17of the strange sounds. To try and put his mother at
- 2:47:21ease, he and his friend Matt once again take to the woods to
- 2:47:24explore this possibility. As they venture further into the
- 2:47:28woods to lookout point towards the campsite, they see nothing.
- 2:47:33There are no signs of any campers that could be nearby
- 2:47:36enough to have caused such a noise.
- 2:47:40Even more perplexed, now that there was no explanation, the
- 2:47:44boys start to make their way back to the house when suddenly.
- 2:47:49They hear what sounds like an axe studying into a tree right
- 2:47:53next to them, unsure of what that noise could have been.
- 2:47:57Before they could even begin to ponder or investigate, they hear
- 2:48:01a woman screaming to their left. This frightens them so bad, but
- 2:48:07the two young men run as fast as they can all the way back to the
- 2:48:10Dandys home when they arrive. Mike is truly scared this time.
- 2:48:16He has no way of explaining his mother's experience or any of
- 2:48:21his own either. Upon relaying this information
- 2:48:24to Clara, both of them are left beside themselves now with a
- 2:48:29chill up both of their spines. But these weird events thus far
- 2:48:34would only intensify as the sands of time continue to
- 2:48:38trickle into the outer class. It has now been months since the
- 2:48:44initial experiences. Besides the oddities they were,
- 2:48:49the family's life continues to be great.
- 2:48:52This distance from the experiences only makes them ever
- 2:48:55easier to dismiss in the minds of Clara and M1 Day.
- 2:49:01Phil or Mr. Dandy decides to take the children, Mike and
- 2:49:05Tina, into Buffalo for the day to get some errands done.
- 2:49:10Mostly being a homebody, Clara decides to forgo the trip with
- 2:49:14her family. And relax at home, reading her
- 2:49:17latest book instead. When her family departs, Clara
- 2:49:21finds herself curled up on the couch and immersed in her latest
- 2:49:25story as a warm breeze drifts to the open windows of the house.
- 2:49:31As she reads page to page, she is suddenly startled when the
- 2:49:35window closest to her slams shut upon investigating.
- 2:49:41Makes no sense to her because the breeze was light.
- 2:49:45Not forceful at all, and their windows were fairly new, which
- 2:49:50made it all the stranger. But as she always does, she
- 2:49:54dismisses the happening. There's nothing more than a
- 2:49:57weird coincidence, and heads back to her book.
- 2:50:01Several nights later, as Mike lay asleep in his bed, he's
- 2:50:06suddenly woken up when a nearby box of a chess game.
- 2:50:10Drops onto his chest. The storage shelf is directly
- 2:50:14above his head, so opening his eyes he glances up to see if
- 2:50:19perhaps it could have been hanging too far off the edge,
- 2:50:22causing it to fall, and to his shock he begins to see several
- 2:50:28more boxes slowly shifting towards the edge by themselves.
- 2:50:34The lowest one then suddenly flies out from the rest and
- 2:50:38smacks him in the chest, terrified.
- 2:50:42He sits up trying to catch his breath.
- 2:50:45He has no way of explaining how the lowest box could be pulled
- 2:50:49and thrown with such force without bringing the rest of the
- 2:50:53boxes with him, as if someone or something had grabbed and thrown
- 2:50:59it by a will of its own. Calling out to his mom in the
- 2:51:03darkness, she soon arrives in the doorway of his room, being a
- 2:51:08very science and logicminded person.
- 2:51:11Like has no way to explain what has happened.
- 2:51:15Examining the pile, Clara too is perplexed and becomes just as
- 2:51:19scared when another box from a different pile flies across the
- 2:51:24room, causing both of them to scream and terror and run out as
- 2:51:29fast as possible, trying to make sense of what was taking place.
- 2:51:35Clara fears that whatever could be lurking in the woods has been
- 2:51:39stalking her family. And has slowly but surely, like
- 2:51:44a malignant stain, invaded her home.
- 2:51:48As her fears turned into a revelation, Claire decides to
- 2:51:52reach out to a local priest for help, hoping her faith will help
- 2:51:56her come up with some answers and better yet, some solutions.
- 2:52:02She speaks with a priest named Father Alphonsus at the
- 2:52:06University of Saint Bonaventure. He believes that the activity
- 2:52:10could be a poltergeist, but given the intelligent nature of
- 2:52:14how it seemed to be behaving, Clara has her doubts but
- 2:52:18nonetheless wants an expert's opinion and assistance.
- 2:52:23So arrangements are made for the father to come out and bless the
- 2:52:27home, and after several days he arrives on April 13th. 1975, the
- 2:52:36cleansing begins. As the family and the priest
- 2:52:40were all gathered together, and as he began to speak, a series
- 2:52:45of horrible wailing and moaning voices began to fill the home,
- 2:52:51as if the house itself was crying.
- 2:52:55The scent of burning matter also quickly enveloped the house.
- 2:53:00The activity reached a fever pitch when the priest opened.
- 2:53:04And began to pray over the crawl space that was underneath the
- 2:53:07stairs. But after this, a blissful
- 2:53:11silence overtook them all. It was if whatever entities that
- 2:53:16dwelled within the walls of the dandies home had finally been
- 2:53:20evicted. Within time, the father gathered
- 2:53:24his things, exchanged pleasantries, and departed for
- 2:53:29the evening. The family now believed that
- 2:53:32their darkest days were behind them.
- 2:53:34And for all intents and purposes, that seemed to be the
- 2:53:38case. But as if to mock the Holy
- 2:53:41Trinity itself, three months later to the day, all hell would
- 2:53:46break loose once again. That night, while her husband is
- 2:53:51away on a business trip, Clara finds herself woken up out of
- 2:53:56the dead sleep by a series of knocks coming from inside the
- 2:54:00walls. The knocks themselves are soon
- 2:54:03accompanied with whispers from someone that she can't see As
- 2:54:09she apprehensively makes her way from her room and slowly down
- 2:54:13the stairs headed towards the main level, the apparition of a
- 2:54:17young girl begins to walk by the stairs.
- 2:54:21She slowly makes her way to the crawl space, opens the door and
- 2:54:27closes it behind her. Clara is baffled at the site.
- 2:54:32After gathering up her courage, she too makes her way fully down
- 2:54:37the stairs into the crawl space, and after a moment of bracing
- 2:54:41herself, she opens the door to be met with nothing.
- 2:54:49Clara then makes her way to her daughter Tina's room to make
- 2:54:52sure it somehow wasn't her, and perhaps her nerves were just on
- 2:54:56edge, but after opening her door.
- 2:54:59She finds her fast asleep in her bed with no signs that she had
- 2:55:04been awake for some time. The following morning, while the
- 2:55:08rest of her family is still asleep, Tina wakes up to begin
- 2:55:12her day. As she feeds her pet bird in its
- 2:55:16cage and begins to brush her hair in her Oval mirror, she
- 2:55:20notices that her bird isn't doing its usual whistles.
- 2:55:25As she glances over at them, she finds it staring into the corner
- 2:55:28of the room. As Tina glances back up at the
- 2:55:32mirror, she's met with the apparition of a young girl.
- 2:55:36Her face sunk in and her eyes were gone.
- 2:55:42She. Screams in terror, and just as
- 2:55:45quickly as it appeared, the apparition disappears.
- 2:55:50The screams of her daughter startles and quickly summons
- 2:55:53Claire at her daughter's room. As she consoles Tina, she
- 2:55:57realizes that the priest's blessings were ineffective.
- 2:56:02She quickly calls Father Al back and explains what had taken
- 2:56:06place the previous night and that morning.
- 2:56:10And although he is busy, he promises to come back as soon as
- 2:56:13possible, and this time to bring a paranormal expert with him as
- 2:56:18well to help him determine the cause and hopefully find a
- 2:56:22working solution. She's able to come back the
- 2:56:25following week. In the meantime, Claire is
- 2:56:29determined to keep her family calm.
- 2:56:32If she can control her own emotions, she knows that
- 2:56:35everything else will be okay as they wait for the priest to
- 2:56:39return. Claire tries her best to keep
- 2:56:42her family calm and live some sort of a normal existence.
- 2:56:47That weekend, her and Phil are watching a movie while Mike and
- 2:56:51Tina are out with friends. As they enjoy their time
- 2:56:55together, their happiness is quickly shattered by a huge
- 2:56:59crashing noise coming from outside of their house.
- 2:57:04Quickly grabbing a flashlight and running outside to
- 2:57:06investigate together, they quietly stepped towards where
- 2:57:10they believed the noise to be originating from, and suddenly
- 2:57:15they hear it again. But this time, thankfully for
- 2:57:19them, the origin is not paranormal.
- 2:57:24This time with several raccoons who happened to be foraging
- 2:57:28through their metal trash cans for something to eat.
- 2:57:32Relieved for that moment, they start to make their way back to
- 2:57:35the house when they suddenly see the figure of a young girl in
- 2:57:40their living room window staring at them.
- 2:57:44As they rush inside, they run up into Tina's room where they find
- 2:57:49her incoherent. And staring into her Oval
- 2:57:52mirror, they try to get her attention, but she's entirely
- 2:57:57unresponsive. Her pale blue eyes are black.
- 2:58:03Panicking, they shake her and yell her name, not knowing what
- 2:58:07else to do when she eventually comes back In that moment, and
- 2:58:13later, Tina will not recall how she got home or what exactly
- 2:58:18happened. As the family tries to gather
- 2:58:21themselves from the shock of what had just taken place, they
- 2:58:26hear movement coming from Mike's room.
- 2:58:29Phil tells his family not to leave Tina's room.
- 2:58:32As he rushes to investigate, however, the home phone begins
- 2:58:38to ring. It's Mike.
- 2:58:41He's asking if he can stay the night at his friend Randy's
- 2:58:44house, however, when told what was going on.
- 2:58:48He quickly tells her that he's coming home to help in any way
- 2:58:51that he can. Rushing to his car, Randy offers
- 2:58:55to come with him, to which Mike agrees.
- 2:58:58Randy would later recount that Mike's hands were sweating and
- 2:59:03he was shaking, gripping the steering wheel.
- 2:59:06He was pale. I asked him what was wrong, and
- 2:59:09he said that things were happening at the house that he
- 2:59:12couldn't explain. The boys quickly arrived to find
- 2:59:16the family in chaos. Phil is prepared to do battle
- 2:59:20with whatever forces within the house and the girls are staying
- 2:59:24close to one another, attempting to comfort each other as they
- 2:59:28try to determine a course of action.
- 2:59:31All the lights in the house go out.
- 2:59:35They then begin to hear banging and scratching coming from the
- 2:59:39crawl space, flashlight still in hand, Fill with the backup of
- 2:59:44his family shines the light towards it.
- 2:59:47And begins to make his way towards whatever this thing is.
- 2:59:52It seems like with each step he takes, the sounds become louder,
- 2:59:57and after a tense several seconds, he opens the door to
- 3:00:01the crawl space. Inside, they find that the
- 3:00:04fireplace that was once there has been completely
- 3:00:07disassembled. Its bricks have now been stacked
- 3:00:11in an elaborate pile directly in the middle of the small room.
- 3:00:16The amount of effort and strength required to perform
- 3:00:19such a task convinces all of them that whatever they're
- 3:00:23dealing with is strong, persistent, and perhaps
- 3:00:28uncleansable. Nonetheless, with their spirits
- 3:00:32waning, Claire makes a desperate call to Father Al, who agrees to
- 3:00:36come earlier than originally planned, and makes emergency
- 3:00:40arrangements for himself and his paranormal expert of a friend to
- 3:00:44come out that night. They arrive as soon as possible.
- 3:00:49The paranormal expert is a man by the name of Alex Tennis, a
- 3:00:54well respected paranormal researcher and psychic whose
- 3:00:58abilities were studied at the American Society of Psychic
- 3:01:02Research. Together they make their way to
- 3:01:05the door of the Dandy house, hoping to help rid this family
- 3:01:09of whatever seems to be stalking them after being let in.
- 3:01:14The family quickly leads the pair to the crawl space to show
- 3:01:17them just what they were talking about.
- 3:01:20Although he was aware that some sort of activity was taking
- 3:01:23place, Alex had not been given any additional details or
- 3:01:27information in regards to the home, its history or happenings.
- 3:01:33As he steps into the crawl space room, he begins to have a vision
- 3:01:38and his vision he sees. Multiple dead bodies stacked
- 3:01:42within the crawl space itself. After the vision subsides, Alex
- 3:01:47begins to explain to the family what he saw.
- 3:01:50He believed that many had passed away within the home itself,
- 3:01:54some of natural causes and some of murder.
- 3:01:59It was his conviction that, based on what he saw, that the
- 3:02:02house used to be a stopping point for a Stagecoach or
- 3:02:06perhaps some kind of inn where people would stay the night
- 3:02:09before departing the following morning.
- 3:02:12It was also his belief. That there was a nearby criminal
- 3:02:15or gang of criminals that would often rob and kill nearby
- 3:02:19travelers, and that perhaps these souls somehow became
- 3:02:23trapped. Here.
- 3:02:25When someone passed or was found dead nearby, being the only
- 3:02:29stopping point in the area, their bodies would be placed in
- 3:02:32the crawl space until they could receive a proper burial.
- 3:02:36It was also his belief that there were seven different
- 3:02:39spirits that were trapped within the home altogether.
- 3:02:43With this revelation, the family, Alex and the Father pray
- 3:02:48that the trapped spirits within the home find peace and be
- 3:02:52released so that they may go on to their final destination.
- 3:02:56Upon the pair's departure, Clara once again has renewed hope.
- 3:03:01The home, as it did the first time around, seemed to be
- 3:03:04cleansed and to be more peaceful meanwhile.
- 3:03:08Mike and his friend Randy were skeptical of Alex's conclusions.
- 3:03:13After he left, they used an old map of the area to trace where
- 3:03:17he had said the old Stagecoach route was.
- 3:03:21They did indeed find what they believed to be an old trail.
- 3:03:24That could have been. Used for such a thing and the
- 3:03:27trail passed. Right by the.
- 3:03:28Dandy home, but during their search, as they were following
- 3:03:32the trail out and headed back to the house, they experienced
- 3:03:36strangeness of their own as they began to trace the trail.
- 3:03:40They began to see what they described as orbs of light in
- 3:03:43the nearby trees, and these orbs began to come at them.
- 3:03:48Randy, having never seen or experienced anything
- 3:03:52supernatural before, began to have a panic attack upon
- 3:03:56arriving at the house. They were fortunately able to
- 3:03:59get him calmed down by this point.
- 3:04:02It was late in the night and the entire family needed to try and
- 3:04:06get some form of sleep in order to function the following day.
- 3:04:11Randy ended up staying the night since he had rode with Mike.
- 3:04:15Once everyone else was settled down for the night and fast
- 3:04:18asleep, Claire sat by herself, weeping.
- 3:04:23She felt that her and her family were helpless in the situation,
- 3:04:26and that all efforts have been exhausted and that they needed
- 3:04:30to move. The only problem was that all
- 3:04:33their money, every last dime, had been sunk into the house.
- 3:04:38Leaving them stranded. She would continue to
- 3:04:41contemplate the future and would cry herself to sleep that night.
- 3:04:46The following morning, as the family began to wake up and
- 3:04:50start to try and resume some form of normalcy, Mike went
- 3:04:54ahead and departed with Randy to take him home.
- 3:04:57Several hours would go by and Mike hadn't returned.
- 3:05:01Finally, there was a knock on the door.
- 3:05:04It was a police officer. He informed the family that
- 3:05:08there had been an accident. That they needed to head to the
- 3:05:11hospital as soon as possible. Rushing into the car, into the
- 3:05:15hospital, the Dandy family wondered just what had happened.
- 3:05:20There had been no mention of Randy by the officer at the
- 3:05:22time. Upon arriving, they were briefed
- 3:05:26that Mike had lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a
- 3:05:30nearby ditch. He was now undergoing emergency
- 3:05:33surgery. He had extensive head injuries,
- 3:05:37A ruptured spleen that may have to be removed.
- 3:05:40And that he had lost a very significant amount of blood.
- 3:05:44As they waited for the outcome of their son's surgery, the
- 3:05:47Dandies were once again greeted by the officer who had knocked
- 3:05:51on their door. He explained to them that Randy
- 3:05:53had indeed been dropped off and that Mike had wrecked on his way
- 3:05:57back to the Dandy residence. But as he was being loaded into
- 3:06:01the ambulance, he kept saying that there was another person in
- 3:06:05the car with him. Although they believed him to be
- 3:06:08confused on account of his injuries, they went ahead and
- 3:06:11searched the area nonetheless, but another person was never
- 3:06:15found. After two weeks of being in a
- 3:06:18coma, Mike finally wakes up, but unfortunately has no
- 3:06:23recollection as to what exactly happened to him to cause the
- 3:06:27accident. Clara, however, believes that
- 3:06:31whatever presence that's been plugging their lives.
- 3:06:34Had to have been responsible for what happened to her son.
- 3:06:38After months of recovery for Mike and continued paranormal
- 3:06:42activity within the home, Father Alfonsus would return with Alex
- 3:06:47one last and final time at Claire's request to try and rid
- 3:06:51the home of the evil and persistent force that had
- 3:06:54drained the life out of all of them for years now.
- 3:06:59However, this time. Just the father and Alex would
- 3:07:02perform the cleansing inside the home themselves.
- 3:07:07As they moved from room to room, Alex would once again experience
- 3:07:11multiple visions of the past. His visions would tell him that
- 3:07:15of the seven spirits who he believed to be within the house,
- 3:07:20one was that of a young man who had been in some kind of a war
- 3:07:24or battle near where the property sits now.
- 3:07:27Another was that of a young girl.
- 3:07:29Who had passed from some sort of very painful illness and what
- 3:07:33was now Tina's room. And there was another spirit
- 3:07:37that seemed to be keeping herself and others trapped
- 3:07:41within the house. It was the spirit of a woman who
- 3:07:44was incredibly angry and resentful.
- 3:07:47She continued to be possessive depressive and just as angry and
- 3:07:52death as she was in life, refusing to pass on.
- 3:07:58Believing what they had identified to be the source of
- 3:08:00the paranormal activity, Father Al decided to take a different
- 3:08:04approach to the cleansing itself.
- 3:08:07Although an exorcism cannot be performed on a place, but rather
- 3:08:11has to be performed on an individual, the rights
- 3:08:14themselves could in theory be performed or added to a series
- 3:08:18of prayers to try and use their strong cleansing powers to clear
- 3:08:23out a home such as this one. So that's exactly what the
- 3:08:27father did. He began to perform the rights
- 3:08:30of exorcism within the house itself.
- 3:08:33As the prayers began to exit, his lips varying with intensity
- 3:08:38as the rights often do, the home began to literally shake, and
- 3:08:43the horrific moaning and wailing that had made itself present in
- 3:08:47the very first cleansing seemed to return with a vengeance,
- 3:08:52every horrible feeling banging. Knocking and scratching noise
- 3:08:57that the family had experienced thus far was present and seemed
- 3:09:02to be magnified. It takes hours, but eventually
- 3:09:06the rides are finished as the dust settles, so to speak.
- 3:09:11The home seems peaceful and blissful, like it did when the
- 3:09:15family had first visited and decided to buy the home.
- 3:09:19And again, for three more months, The family lives in
- 3:09:23peace. They like the persistent force
- 3:09:26that has manifested itself to be.
- 3:09:29The haunting begins again. The Dandy family, despite their
- 3:09:33best efforts, simply cannot take it anymore, decide to cut their
- 3:09:38losses and move. Unable to find a buyer for their
- 3:09:42house, they eventually declare bankruptcy.
- 3:09:46Shortly after this, Phil and Clara would also divorce.
- 3:09:51Bringing a sad and bitter end to what was supposed to be a rural
- 3:09:55redemption for the Dandy family. However, this wouldn't be the
- 3:10:01end of the story of the Hinsdale house.
- 3:10:05Eventually, the home would come into the possession of Daniel
- 3:10:09Klaus, who currently owns it. Daniel's a renowned paranormal
- 3:10:13investigator and has been involved with the likes of Nick
- 3:10:17Groff and has made appearances. On tons of national TV programs
- 3:10:22centered around the paranormal over the years.
- 3:10:25Having been raised in a haunted house, this led to a lifelong
- 3:10:29fascination with the paranormal forum.
- 3:10:32After years of restoration, it is now available for both
- 3:10:36investigations and tours and is still considered a very active
- 3:10:41paranormal portal and is kept open as a paranormal research
- 3:10:45location. It's even staged in the 1970s
- 3:10:49period to maintain the integrity of when the hauntings were
- 3:10:53initially known to have began. But now that we know the back
- 3:10:57story of the 20th and into the 21st century of the Hinsdale
- 3:11:01House, just who owned it, what happened to them, and who owns
- 3:11:05it now, I would like to shift your attention to some of the
- 3:11:09plausible theories as to what could have caused the haunting.
- 3:11:13Many theories of what could have caused the haunting have been
- 3:11:16formed over the years by the many people who have researched
- 3:11:20and have been interested in the case.
- 3:11:22One theory is that the home was built on top of an Indian burial
- 3:11:26mount. This, of course, could have
- 3:11:28disturbed the spirits of the natives that rested within the
- 3:11:31land, and although tribes who use this method of burial were
- 3:11:35present in the area back in history, there's little to no
- 3:11:39evidence to support this claim. But perhaps any evidence by this
- 3:11:43point could have long since been lost to the sands of time, or
- 3:11:47could have been removed when the home was initially built.
- 3:11:51Another theory is that the home was at one point used as a
- 3:11:55Stagecoach in and passerbys were murdered either near or within
- 3:11:59the home itself, leading to their spirits being trapped
- 3:12:03within the home or on its land, although there is evidence that
- 3:12:07a Stagecoach route did run very close to the home.
- 3:12:11There isn't direct evidence that the house itself was used as an
- 3:12:14end, but it is possible murders also did take place in or around
- 3:12:19the area in which the home is now located, which could lend
- 3:12:23credence to the theories of criminals robbing and murdering
- 3:12:27people along the Stagecoach route.
- 3:12:30An old family from the area that used to own the home with the
- 3:12:33last name of McMahon also lends credence to the home being used
- 3:12:38as an end at some point. The now past grandfather of the
- 3:12:41family used to tell stories of a road that passed by the house or
- 3:12:46stagecoaches traveled. Another theory is that one or
- 3:12:51several of the spirits were trapped as a result of hangings
- 3:12:55that took place there. The now famous hanging tree that
- 3:12:59sits near the residence was indeed used for executions for a
- 3:13:03time. Most famously, it seems, was the
- 3:13:06execution of a woman named Elizabeth.
- 3:13:10Elizabeth was pregnant. Could this perhaps be the spirit
- 3:13:14of the woman who was angry and refusing to leave?
- 3:13:19Other events, such as a homicide that took place in the year 2000
- 3:13:23near the house, as well as a buzz saw incident that led to a
- 3:13:27boy's death, have led many to believe that whatever haunts,
- 3:13:31the area could indeed still be there and influencing our world.
- 3:13:37It's important in my opinion. To try and get the story and the
- 3:13:41facts as straight as possible, not only for the current owners
- 3:13:44benefit, but for the Dandies who have suffered greatly as a
- 3:13:48result of their story becoming public, especially towards the
- 3:13:52end of their time at the property.
- 3:13:54As word got out that something strange was taking place at the
- 3:13:57house, a local paper ended up reaching out to the Dandies for
- 3:14:01a statement. Thinking that they were
- 3:14:03accepting an opportunity for additional outside help, they
- 3:14:07gave their story. Only to be met with ridicule
- 3:14:10from the paper, which in turn led to ridicule from the public
- 3:14:14and nearby residents. Which this combined with the
- 3:14:18paranormal torment they were experiencing along with then
- 3:14:21having to file bankruptcy and then later divorce.
- 3:14:25In my opinion, they suffered greatly and did not benefit from
- 3:14:30the story, especially during that time.
- 3:14:33The only benefit I've seen could be from Clara Miller, formerly
- 3:14:37Clara Dandy. Who would eventually write a
- 3:14:40book known as Echoes of a Haunting?
- 3:14:43But to be fair, if I experienced even a portion of what she did,
- 3:14:47I would eventually write a book to catalog what happened as
- 3:14:50well. Not only for some monetary
- 3:14:52benefit, of course, but for my own sanity, really.
- 3:14:57So, as I've began to mention, and will continue to mention
- 3:15:00again in the future, if you ever encounter anyone mentioned in
- 3:15:04this video or any of my other videos, whether it be in person.
- 3:15:08Or online. Please be respectful of them and
- 3:15:12their experiences and do not ever harass anyone.
- 3:15:17And if you find yourself seemingly handed an opportunity
- 3:15:20that seems too good to be true, the answer to your prayers, it's
- 3:15:25more than likely not the case. It could be a nightmare waiting
- 3:15:29to happen. It could be a haunted home
- 3:15:32infested with entities sitting and waiting for the perfect
- 3:15:37victim. Don't let it be you.
